In the year Wuchen of the Chongzhen era (the original text says "Chongzheng"), in the twelfth lunar month on the day Gengyin and the hour Gengchen, Wang Xianmin and Shao Wuqi from Huizhou were in the capital and divined whether Li Bu Shilang Ma Kangzhuang could enter the cabinet and become a prime minister. The lesson pattern is "Shehai" with the addition of "Guzu": among the four lessons, there are two instances of upper elements overcoming lower ones, and the deeper "Shehai" is taken as the initial transmission, which is "Shehai". The final transmission is寅 wood, which gives back birth to the initial transmission of午 fire, which is "Guzu". The branches午 and未 are exactly in the void of the Jiashen decade. (The original note also says "Yin and Mao fall into void", which does not match the attached lesson disk, so it is retained as it was.) This example is from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nan".

The Heaven Plate is two places behind the Earth Plate. The time of the morning hour belongs to the day, so using the day stem Geng, the nobleman of the day is at the Chou position. The nobleman is on the Earth Plate's Mao position and moves in the order of the branches. Therefore, the Heavenly Generals on each branch of the Heaven Plate are: Chou is accompanied by the nobleman, Yin is accompanied by the Teng Snake, Mao is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, Chen is accompanied by Liu He, Si is accompanied by Gou Chen, Wu is accompanied by the Azure Dragon (written as 'Qing' in the chart), Wei is accompanied by Tian Kong, Shen is accompanied by the White Tiger, You is accompanied by Tai Chang, Xu is accompanied by the Black Tortoise, Hai is accompanied by Tai Yin, and Zi is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson is the day stem Geng, which is in the Xu position, and Xu is accompanied by Wu, which is accompanied by the Azure Dragon; the second lesson is Wu accompanied by Chen, which is accompanied by Liu He; the third lesson is the day branch Yin accompanied by Zi, which is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress; the fourth lesson is Zi accompanied by Xu, which is accompanied by the Black Tortoise. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu, accompanied by the Azure Dragon, Wu fire conquers Geng metal, which is the official ghost (the hidden stem is 'Jia Wu', but Wu is in the Jiashen cycle and is in the empty position, and the title of this section clearly states 'Wu and Wei are empty', so it should be considered as empty); the middle transmission is Chen, with the hidden stem Renchen, accompanied by Liu He, Chen earth generates Geng metal, which is the official seal; the final transmission is Yin, with the hidden stem Gengyin, accompanied by the Teng Snake, which is the wife's wealth. Wu, Chen, and Yin each move backward in sequence, each separated by one branch, which is a retreating interval transmission.

The interpretation states: Not only will he not be appointed to the cabinet, but he will have to return to his hometown within a few days. Anyone who holds an official post and draws the "Gu Zu" divination chart is likely to not complete their term. Moreover, the first transmission falls into an empty position, and the middle transmission also lies in an empty place. The Azure Dragon of the first transmission transforms into the Teng Snake in the final transmission; the transformation of dragon into snake indicates a decline in momentum. He should suddenly realize and withdraw early. Moreover, the Azure Dragon deity turns to attack the lower position; if he insists on striving upward, he will certainly face setbacks. Later, indeed, he failed to be recommended for the cabinet, and in the second year he was dismissed due to an investigation and returned to his hometown. Soon after, he abandoned worldly affairs and followed Zhang Liang in pursuing Chiguangzi.

Gengyin day · Yu Benzhong divined the metropolitan examination

On Dingchou year, second month, Gengyin day, the lesson was cast with You month general placed on Chou hour. This case was divined by Yu Benzhong, a juren from Jintan, as recorded in the Guo氏 Divination Cases. You general is placed on Chou, and the Heaven Plate is two places behind the Earth Plate, so the plate is the same as the previous lesson. The previous lesson asked about entering the cabinet and becoming prime minister, while this lesson asks about passing the imperial examination.

The divination plate is the same as the previous example: the Heaven Plate has Chou multiplied by the Nobleman, Yin multiplied by Teng Snake, Mao multiplied by Vermilion Bird, Chen multiplied by Liu He, Si multiplied by Gou Chen, Wu multiplied by Azure Dragon, Wei multiplied by Tian Kong, Shen multiplied by White Tiger, You multiplied by Tai Chang, Xu multiplied by Black Tortoise, Hai multiplied by Tai Yin, and Zi multiplied by Heavenly Empress. The four lessons are arranged from right to left as Wu added to Geng (Geng is located in Shen), Chen added to Wu, Zi added to Yin, and Xu added to Zi. The Heavenly Generals are in sequence: Azure Dragon, Liu He, Heavenly Empress, and Black Tortoise. The three transmissions are as follows: the first transmission is Wu multiplied by Azure Dragon, representing official ghost and falling into the旬空, the middle transmission is Chen multiplied by Liu He, representing official seal, and the final transmission is Yin multiplied by Teng Snake, representing wife's wealth. The Wu on the day stem is a place of defeat and decline for Geng metal, and the Zi on the day branch is the place of bathing for Yin wood. Both the stem and branch are in a state of decline, which serves as the basis for the conclusion that he will not succeed.

Guo Yüqing said: The day stem and day branch are both in a state of decline and exhaustion; the divination and its transmissions neither have the post-horse nor the nobleman; the first transmission falls into emptiness, and the middle transmission is also trapped in emptiness - this is an inauspicious sign. His relative Jing Jun Ting has asked me several times, but I refused to give any advice. Later, it indeed did not come true.

Wu Jiayun said: When both the day stem and day branch are in a state of decline, this indicates the image of a civil servant's fate being in decline, how can it be successful?

On the Gengyin day and Zi hour, Wang Youzhan predicted the imperial examination (Guo's case).

This lesson is the same as the previous example, occurring on a Gengyin day in the second lunar month of the Dingchou year, but the divination starts at the Zi hour. It is used to predict for Wang You, whether he will pass the imperial examination. The "Chen" is taken as his personal destiny. The imperial examination is a major examination held in the capital by the Ministry of Rites, where candidates from all provinces gather, and passing it allows one to proceed to the palace examination. Therefore, this divination falls under the category of predicting official rank. "Chen destiny" refers to his personal destiny being in the Chen position. When interpreting the divination, one should look at which branch deity and which heavenly general are added to the Chen position on the Heaven Plate, and use this to determine the success or failure of his official rank. This entry is taken from the "Guo's Divination Cases."

This is the arranged divination board. The original text compressed the celestial and earthly plates, four lessons, and three transmissions into a few lines. Here they are read sequentially. At the beginning, "He Ji Long Kong" corresponds to "Chen Si Wu Wei," which is the arrangement of heavenly generals with the branches: Liu He (六合) occupies Chen, Gou Chen (勾陈) occupies Si, Qing Long (青龙) occupies Wu, and Tian Kong (天空) occupies Wei. Here, "Wei" refers to the earthly branch Wei, indicating the position on the board and not to be interpreted otherwise. On the left, "Zhu Mao" and "She Yin" mean Zhu Que (朱雀) occupies Mao and Teng She (螣蛇) occupies Yin. On the right, "Shen Hu" and "You Chang" mean Bai Hu (白虎) occupies Shen and Tai Chang (太常) occupies You. Below, "Chou Zi Hai Xu" corresponds to "Gui Hou Yin Xuan," meaning Nobleman (贵人) occupies Chou, Heavenly Empress (天后) occupies Zi, Tai Yin (太阴) occupies Hai, and Xuan Wu (玄武) occupies Xu. Nobleman is on Chou, and the twelve generals proceed in order, using the daytime nobleman. In the middle is the four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem Geng is in the lodging palace at Shen, with Shen having Wei, which is the first lesson; Wei having Wu, which is the second lesson; the day branch Yin having Chou, which is the third lesson; and Chou having Zi, which is the fourth lesson. Thus, it is written as "Chou Yin Wei Geng" corresponding to "Zi Chou Wu Wei," and the upper row "Hou Gui Long Kong" refers to the four heavenly generals corresponding to these lessons. The rightmost column is the three transmissions: the first transmission is Wu Zi, which is the son爻, occupying Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is Ding Hai, which is the son爻, occupying Tai Yin; and the final transmission is Bing Xu, which is the parent爻, occupying Xuan Wu. The day stem Geng Yin falls in the Jiashen (甲申) decade, with Wu and Wei branches being empty, so the Wei on the day stem is the empty god of the decade.

Guo Yuqing said: At first, when I cast this divination, I only saw the Vermilion Bird of the Curtain and the Nobleman's position in the position of Wei pressing upon the Day Stem, and it was falling into the旬空, while the Post-horse was also lacking, so I did not look favorably upon it. That day, there were dozens of people seeking divination, and although I spoke to each of them in front of everyone, I actually did not sincerely believe he would pass. Later, after Wang Jun passed the examination, I re-examined the situation and found other meanings: the god riding over the Heaven Gate at the亥 position crossed over the Heaven Gate, and it was exactly on his year of birth. The Black Tortoise at亥 is in its temple, and a god in its temple cannot do evil. In the second month, the Month Builder at卯 became the Vermilion Bird, and it was placed on his birth year at辰, which is the god of documents, and it is the main aspect of the examination paper. The Tai sui of the Dingchou year at丑 is the Life Qi, and it is riding on the Nobleman, and it is placed on the Day Branch at寅. The Day Branch represents the house, so this is the Tai sui and Nobleman coming to the house, and the Nobleman is also the symbol of the examiner. Although the Curtain and Vermilion Bird fell into the旬空, it was relieved by the Tai sui at丑 in the Day Branch, which冲 the empty position, so it is not considered empty. The Tian Kong general, if it does not face the Nobleman, should be considered empty. Now, the Tian Kong at未 is on the Day Stem, facing the Tai sui at丑 on the Day Branch, which is the Nobleman, thus transforming into the god of submitting documents, which signifies presenting documents and achieving honor and success. In this way, it is natural for him to pass. Falling down, gaining wisdom, I realized the infinite subtleties of Liu Ren.

Cheng Shuxun remarked: The explanations provided by Guo's later additions seem forced. I still include them to commend Guo's honesty in admitting his misjudgment. Considering this lesson, only the fact that the Vermilion Bird is riding on the卯 wood, which is strong in February, and is located on the native's hour stem, is worth noting. Also, the middle transmission亥 water generates卯 wood, and the final transmission戌 combines with卯. Based on these points, one might still hope for success. However, there are too many aspects in the lesson that indicate failure, and it would be inappropriate to rely on a single factor to predict success. Perhaps Guo cast this divination for many people on that day, and the divine beings did not clearly reveal the outcome? Or is there a subtle principle beyond the grasp of those with limited knowledge?

On the Gengyin day, during the Chou hour, divination was performed regarding pregnancy and childbirth (from the Farmer's Divination Manual).

In the year of Wuchen of the Qianlong era, during the twelfth lunar month (with the month builder in Chou), on the day of Gengyin, the divination was cast using the hour of Zi as the month general added to the hour of Chou, to inquire about the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of a pregnancy. The mother, Lady Ding, was twenty-two years old. For the twelfth month, the month general used was Shenhou Zi, which was added to the hour of Chou. The heavenly and earthly disks were then arranged accordingly. This entry is taken from "Mu Fu Zhan Xian," divined by Wang Mu Fu.

This case starts on the same day as the previous example, with the four lessons and three transmissions having identical branch spirits. The only difference is that the heavenly generals have changed in a cycle. On the heaven plate, "Chen Si Wu Wei" are paired with "He Zhu She Gui," meaning theLiu He is riding on Chen, the Vermilion Bird on Si, the Teng Snake on Wu, and the Nobleman on Wei. On the left side, the Gou Chen is riding on Mao, and the Azure Dragon on Yin. On the right side, the Heavenly Empress is riding on Shen, and the Tai Yin on You. Below, "Chou Zi Hai Xu" are paired with "Kong Hu Chang Xuan," meaning the Tian Kong on Chou, the White Tiger on Zi, the Tai Chang on Hai, and the Black Tortoise on Xu. The Nobleman is on Wei, and the twelve generals are in reverse order, using the night nobleman. The four lessons remain as the day stem Geng, which is in the lodging palace Shen and gets Wei, Wei gets Wu, the day branch Yin gets Chou, and Chou gets Zi. The first lesson is Wei on Geng, riding the Nobleman; the second lesson is Wu on Wei, riding the Teng Snake; the third lesson is Chou on Yin, riding the Tian Kong; the fourth lesson is Zi on Chou, riding the White Tiger. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu Zi, a son's爻, riding the White Tiger; the second transmission is Ding Hai, a son's爻, riding the Tai Chang; the third transmission is Bing Xu, a parent's爻, riding the Black Tortoise.

Wang Mufu said: This divination concerns childbirth and indicates a smooth delivery, with the mother remaining unharmed, but the child is difficult to keep. Divination regarding pregnancy differs from divination regarding childbirth: during pregnancy, it is unfavorable to see Teng Snake and White Tiger, but during labor, it is favorable to see Teng Snake and White Tiger, because both are "blood gods" associated with blood, which corresponds to the image of childbirth. In divination regarding childbirth, the day stem represents the child and the day branch represents the mother, following a fixed system. Now, the day stem is occupied by Wei and the day branch is occupied by Chou, both beingTomb Spirit (mound spirits). Wei is the墓 of the day branch's寅 wood, and Chou is the墓 of the day stem's庚 metal. They mutually restrain each other, indicating that the mother and child will not be at peace during this pregnancy. It is said that delivery will be easy because Teng Snake and White Tiger are located on theYin Spirit (yin spirits) of the day stem and day branch, namely the second lesson's午 with Teng Snake and the fourth lesson's子 with White Tiger, which are assisting nearby. It is said that the mother will remain unharmed because the day branch's寅 is spring wood, which is in a strong state at the time of divination. It is said that the child is difficult to keep because the three transmissions return to the night time spirit, and the hidden stem produces丙 and丁, which are fire and both are ghosts that harm the day stem's庚 metal. Why is it determined that the child is female? Because the day stem's未 and the day branch's丑 both belong to earth and are compared with each other, and both are yin. Moreover, the divination takes place at the time of Chou, and the earth branch's Chou earth is in a position that harms the heaven branch's Zi water, indicating a case of lower harming the upper.

Now considering it more broadly: Xu is the foot of Teng Snake, and now it is placed on Hai. Hai represents the heavenly gate and is the head; the foot is above and the head is below, which corresponds to the proper position of the fetus with the head down and feet up, indicating an easy childbirth. The three transmissions, Zi, Hai, and Xu, retreat step by step, forming a retreating transmission, which also indicates a smooth delivery. The three transmissions also form the auspicious pattern of the Three Marvels, so neither the mother nor the child will suffer great harm. However, the day stem's Wei is in the empty旬, which is unfavorable for the child. The mother's position, which is Chou, is originally the tomb of Geng day, and it also brings the god Ding to attack the day stem, which is also unfavorable for the child. Although the Wei on the day stem is the tomb of the day branch Yin wood, it also carries the癸 water, which nourishes the day stem, so the mother remains unharmed. Zi and Wu represent the image of roads, while Teng Snake and Bai Hu are blood gods, so it is determined that a daughter will be born but later unable to be raised. The outcome indeed verified all these predictions.

On Gengyin day, a hidden chant divination for seeking official position (direct and to the point)

Jiangfu's left mansion, aged twenty-five, still without official rank, wanted to seek an official position through an unorthodox method called "yin授" instead of taking the imperial examination. However, he had no scholarly ability or talent. One day he consulted the divination at Miao Shufang's house, and the result was the Gengyin day with a hidden chant lesson. A hidden chant is when the month general and the day of divination are in the same position, and the heaven plate is placed over the earth plate without moving, indicating a state of stillness, stagnation, and internal affairs. This passage is taken from "One Needle Sees the Essence."

The Heaven Plate is arranged with 「巳午未申」 paired with 「朱蛇贵后」, meaning the Vermilion Bird is on巳, the Teng Snake on午, the Nobleman on未, and the Heavenly Empress on申. On the left, the Liu He is on辰 and the Gou Chen on卯. On the right, the Tai Yin is on酉 and the Black Tortoise on戌. Below, 「寅丑子亥」 is paired with 「龙空虎常」, meaning the Azure Dragon is on寅, the Tian Kong on丑, the White Tiger on子, and the Tai Chang on亥. The Nobleman is on未, and since the twelve generals are in reverse order, it refers to the night nobleman. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem is庚, and its lodging palace is on申, so申 remains on申; the same applies again, with申 on申. The day branch is寅, and its lodging palace is on寅, so寅 remains on寅; the same applies again, with寅 on寅. This results in the upper and lower positions remaining unchanged, forming aHidden Chant lesson. The upper gods of the four lessons are sequentially the Heavenly Empress, Heavenly Empress, Azure Dragon, and Azure Dragon. The three transmissions begin with申 as the brother爻, with the hidden stem being甲, riding the Heavenly Empress. The middle transmission is寅 as the wife wealth爻, riding the Azure Dragon. The final transmission is巳 as the official ghost爻, with the hidden stem being癸, riding the Vermilion Bird. The three characters申,寅, and巳 mutually punish and harm each other, forming a three punishment transmission.

Miao Shufang said: In this lesson, the three transmissions are respectively occupied by the Heavenly Empress, Azure Dragon, and Vermilion Bird, all auspicious generals. The final transmission, which is Si, combines with the first transmission, which is Shen, forming a harmonious relationship, indicating a favorable sign for obtaining an official position. Moreover, both the beginning and the end have the virtue god in harmony. The two gods associated with official positions, "Heavenly City" and "Heavenly Official," have entered the three transmissions, and with their support, the matter is certain to be accomplished. The first transmission is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, which is the useful god. Since the Heavenly Empress is yin, it is necessary to rely on the power of a yin nobleman, or night nobleman. The sought official position is suitable in the criminal law category, because the three transmissions, Shen, Yin, and Si, form a triple punishment; however, triple punishment indicates hardship and effort. Later, he was indeed appointed as the official in Quanzhou School of Law, which is exactly the "criminal official" mentioned by Miao. And this matter was ultimately accomplished through the power of the yin nobleman.

On the Gengyin day, with the Xu zodiac as the general and the Shen hour, divination of the intention (Five Essentials and Weighing)

On the Gengyin day of the Dingsi year in the third lunar month, the divination was cast using the Xu general added to the Shen hour. The question asked was about the purpose of the person who came. "Divining the intention" is a specialized branch of the Six Rats (Liu Shen) divination: it does not wait for the guest to speak, but instead infers what is in their mind based on the lesson pattern. This passage is taken from "Wu Yao Quan Ping."

On the Heaven Plate, the positions 「未申酉戌」 are paired with 「空虎常玄」, meaning the Sky Void is on 未, the White Tiger on 申, the Tai Chang on 酉, and the Black Tortoise on 戌. On the left side, the Azure Dragon is on 午 and the Gou Chen on 巳. On the right side, the Tai Yin is on 亥 and the Heavenly Empress on 子. Below, the positions 「辰卯寅丑」 are paired with 「合朱蛇贵」, meaning the Liu He is on 辰, the Vermilion Bird on 卯, the Teng Snake on 寅, and the Nobleman on 丑. The Nobleman is on 丑, and the twelve generals proceed in order, using the daytime Nobleman. The general 戌 is added to the time 申, so the Heaven Plate advances two positions relative to the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem 庚 is in the lodging palace 申 and gets 戌, which is the first lesson; 戌 gets 子, which is the second lesson; the Day Branch 寅 gets 辰, which is the third lesson; and 辰 gets 午, which is the fourth lesson. The four upper spirits 戌, 子, 辰, and 午 are respectively occupied by the Black Tortoise, the Heavenly Empress, the Liu He, and the Azure Dragon. The three transmissions are as follows: the first transmission is 辰, which is the parent's yao, and the hidden stem is 壬, occupying the Liu He; the middle transmission is 午, which is the official ghost yao, occupying the Azure Dragon, and the mark 「◎」 on 午 indicates the旬空 (empty period) — on a day of Gengyin, 午 and 未 are empty; the final transmission is 申, which is the brother's yao, and the hidden stem is 甲, occupying the White Tiger.

Zhu Shi Heng said: The person's mind is troubled by losing two hundred pieces of money. According to the classics, the door of Xing Feng belongs to internal movement, and it also meets the Post-horse. The current door is occupied by the White Tiger, which signifies alarm and worry, indicating that the lost item is within the house and the mind is frightened. The Middle Transmission meets the Wu door with the Azure Dragon, which signifies wealth, but since Wu falls in the旬空, it is not yet certain that the loss is due to theft. Although the Black Tortoise is on the戌 door, the Black Tortoise is the god of theft, but the戌 earth can generate the庚 metal, which is the official of the庚 day, so it is still not certain that it is theft. If we consider the initial establishment, the戌 hides the丙, and the丙 fire is the ghost of the庚 metal; if we consider the repeated establishment, the symbol's Jia matches with the戌, which is the repeated establishment generating the initial one, thus the ghost energy of the initial establishment becomes strong; moreover, the Black Tortoise naturally signifies theft and loss.

If the戌 is considered as a servant, then the sun is now moving to the戌 position, and the time is during the day, which indicates a thief entering the house during the day. The戌 and酉 positions meet, showing that the thief is of the same status, or a relative of the house owner. The thief comes from the southwest and hides the stolen goods in the due south. Why does the person live in the northwest? Because they are very close to each other; the戌 is only one zodiac sign away from the申. The characters亥,戌, and申 are all yang branches, indicating males; they are also in the first positions of the four seasons, indicating young age. From the申 to the戌, there are only two zodiac signs, meaning there are only two people involved. Later, half of the money was indeed recovered.

It can recover half of the lost amount, and the key lies in the position of巳: the metal of 庚 is born in巳, so in the end,巳 can generate and support the day stem. The middle and final transmissions fall into emptiness, which actually benefits the thief, hence only half is recovered. According to the method of entanglement and degree from the classic texts, the god seen on the day branch represents the lost item; now, on the day branch寅, we see 辰, which is the month builder of the third month. The month builder governs valuable things, thus we know the lost money is current currency of the present age. The initiating transmission god comes to support the day stem, so our side gains strength. Thus, it can be seen that within mutual generation there is a ghost, and within the wealth爻 there is arestrain. The key lies in the change of the month builder. This is precisely the profound insight of Ningshenzi Guo Pu. If only taking the situation of the person, one should discuss according to the principles of gathering and dispersing and the rescue by the ghost; if judging fortune and misfortune, one should take the day stem as the main focus, looking at the generation andrestrain of the three transmissions and the correct time of the divination, to determine whether it will end safely. There is no need to seek change or be overly ingenious. The ancients said: seeking the extraordinary often results in something not extraordinary.

On Gengyin day, at the hour of Si, divination was made about a relative who has left home (as recorded in Guo's case).

In the year Wuyin, fifth lunar month, twenty-eighth day, on the day Gengyin, using the hour Si with the method of adding Wei as the general, Fu Taizun divined the time when his family members who were away would return. "Taizun" was a respectful term for the prefect, and "jiaxia xingren" referred to family members who had left home and had not yet returned. This entry is taken from the "Guo Shi Zhan An."

This lesson is identical in structure to the previous one: on the Heaven Plate, the positions are Wei, Shen, You, Xu, occupied by Tian Kong, Bai Hu, Tai Chang, and Xuan Wu respectively. On the left, Qing Long occupies Wu and Gou Chen occupies Si. On the right, Tai Yin occupies Hai and Tian Hou occupies Zi. On the lower plate, the positions are Chen, Mao, Yin, Chou, occupied by Liu He, Zhu Qu, Teng Sha, and Gui Ren respectively. The position Wei is occupied by the general, adding Si at the time. The Heaven Plate is again two positions ahead of the Earth Plate, so the day stem Geng is lodged in Shen, resulting in the first lesson as Xu adding Geng. The four upper deities of the four lessons, Wu, Zi, Chen, and Wu, are successively occupied by Xuan Wu, Tian Hou, Liu He, and Qing Long. The three transmissions are as follows: the first transmission is Chen, representing the parent's yao, Dun Ren, occupied by Liu He; the middle transmission is Wu, representing the official ghost yao, occupied by Qing Long, and marked with 「◎」 indicating an empty period; the final transmission is Shen, representing the brother's yao, Dun Jia, occupied by Bai Hu. The key point of this lesson is that the position Hai on the Earth Plate is the Heaven Gate, and directly above it is the position Chou, occupied by the nobleman, which is what is referred to later as 'the nobleman ascends the Heaven Gate'.

Guo Yuqing said: This lesson is called "Zhang Guan," also known as "Deng San Tian." With the Nobleman approaching Hai and being in the right position, it is called "Gu Deng Tian Men," which originally represents the image of starting a journey and heading north. The first transmission carries the Heavenly Horse, indicating that the traveler will arrive soon. However, the middle and final transmissions both fall into empty and trapped positions, so the traveler must wait until after the sixth day of the sixth month, after entering the Jiawu decade, to arrive. At that time, the character "Wu" becomes filled, allowing the traveler to ascend the "San Tian." However, once entering the Jiawu decade, the character "Chen" again becomes empty. The Heavenly Horse is originally a creature that travels in the air, so falling into an empty position is not a problem. TheJiesha on the grandson's line is approaching You, so the traveler should arrive on the You day. This lesson is also called "She Hai," indicating obstacles on the journey. Later, the traveler indeed arrived home on the sixth day of the sixth month, on the Dingyou day. On the way, the family had several accidents involving the donkey, nearly causing injury.

On the day branch Gengyin, at the hour of Chou, the nine elders are circled around the shop business (case of divination).

In the year Wushen, on the ninth day of the first lunar month, on the day Gengyin, the divination was cast at the hour of Chen with the general Chen added to Chou. The person seeking divination is the Ròu Jiǔ Gōng, born in the year Guimao on the fourth day of the tenth lunar month at the hour of Hai. He is currently sixty-six years old. He is consulting about the prosperity and decline of his shop. This entry is also found in the "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian."

This set of lesson plates is slightly different from the previous examples, with the heavenly generals directly written next to the branches on the heaven plate. The top row "Shen-You-Xu-Hai": Teng Snake rides Shen, Vermilion Bird rides You, Liu He rides Xu, and Gou Chen rides Hai. The characters "Zhu Liu" are marked above You and Xu, and the character "Chen" is attached to the side of Hai. On the left, Nobleman rides Wei, Heavenly Empress rides Wu, and Tai Yin rides Si. On the right, Azure Dragon rides Zi, Tian Kong rides Chou, and White Tiger rides Yin. Below, the branches Mao and Chen are paired with Tai Chang and Black Tortoise. Nobleman rides Wei, and the twelve generals proceed in order. Chou hour belongs to night, so the night nobleman is used. Chen general rides Chou hour, and the heaven plate is three positions ahead of the earth plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Geng is in the lodging palace of Shen and rides Hai, which is the first lesson; Hai rides寅, which is the second lesson; the day branch Yin is on寅 and rides Si, which is the third lesson; Si rides申, which is the fourth lesson; the four upper deities Hai,寅, Si, and申 ride Gou Chen, White Tiger, Tai Yin, and Teng Snake respectively. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Shen, which is a brother's yao, and the hidden stem is Jia, riding Teng Snake; the middle transmission is Hai, which is a son's yao, and it is recorded as riding Liu He here, while in the four lessons it is recorded as riding Gou Chen, and the original text has conflicting records in these two places; the final transmission is寅, which is a wife's wealth yao, riding White Tiger.

Shao Yanhe said: When the day stem is亥 and the day branch is巳, the庚 metal generates亥 water and寅 wood generates巳 fire, both are draining my energy, which is called "stealing energy." His family has been in the business of shops, and now they have lost five or six tenths of their fortune. The first transmission is申 placed on the earth plate at巳, the禄 of庚 metal is originally in申, but the禄 god is placed on the position of Teng Snake, which is associated with disturbance, indicating debt and being troubled by others. The middle transmission is亥 placed on the day stem, which drains energy too much. The final transmission is寅, which is the wealth trigram, but it is placed in a position of losing energy and is further attacked by the White Tiger, so their entire fortune is completely lost.

It was determined that within forty-eight years the family's business would first lose half, and then after seven more years it would all be lost, with the wife also falling ill and dying. At the time of the divination, the family was already struggling greatly, and by the Xinhai year both shops had closed down. The亥 is the spirit that drains the metal of the庚, and the巳 represents shops. The亥 water also overcomes the巳 fire, so when the flow year repeats on亥, the shop closes. By the Jiayin year, debts accumulated and the situation became desperate, leading to being sued by others. The寅爻 also represents shops, and since the寅 wood is drained by the巳 fire, when the year reaches寅, the business fails. The wife then dies from swelling disease.

On the day branch Gengyin, at the hour of Chou, Zhang Yishi divined about illness (from the Oral Mirror).

He was born in the year of Gengxu. At the age of fifty-nine, on the ninth month of the year Wushen, on the day of Gengyin, at the time when the hour of Chen begins to add to Chou, Zhang Yishi came to consult about his illness. The case is also recorded in the "Koujian" and "Fangben Zhan'an."

The divination board is the same as the previous example: Teng Snake is on Shen, Vermilion Bird on You, Liu He on Xu, Gou Chen on Hai, Azure Dragon on Zi, Tian Kong on Chou, White Tiger on Yin, Tai Chang on Mao, Black Tortoise on Chen, Tai Yin on Si, Heavenly Empress on Wu, and Nobleman on Wei, with Nobleman moving in the order of the sequence. The four lessons are: the Day Stem, Geng, is in the Lodging Palace of Shen and gets Hai, Hai gets Yin, the Day Branch, Yin, gets Si, and Si gets Shen. The four heavenly stems above are successively multiplied by Gou Chen, White Tiger, Tai Yin, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions are: the first transmission, Shen, is a brother's yao with Teng Snake, the middle transmission, Hai, is a son's yao with Gou Chen, and the final transmission, Yin, is a wife's wealth yao with White Tiger. When divining illness, the Day Stem represents the person's body. Today, the Day Stem is on Hai and the Day Branch is on Si, both positions are draining energy, which is exactly the focus for diagnosing illness.

Shao Yanhe said: This reading is extremely ominous, with both upper and lower aspects being depleted. The root of the illness is likely from diarrhea. In the future, there will be alternating chills and fever, inevitably leading to five wasting and seven injuries, and also adding the problem of vomiting and regurgitation. Moreover, the day stem is亥, with庚 metal generating亥 water, the metal energy is drained into the water, often indicating cold phlegm rising. The day branch is巳, with寅 wood generating巳 fire, which is a false fire, inevitably causing discomfort below the heart, leading to this illness. Adding the symptom of white discharge, the person will die within twenty-eight days; if they survive, they will surely suffer within another twenty-eight days. This reading begins and ends withInauspicious Spirit, and both upper and lower aspects are stealing energy. The numbers of巳 and亥 are both four, and the number of申 is seven, four times seven is twenty-eight, and both places are present, totaling fifty-six days. When diagnosing illness, the day stem governs the upper body, and the day branch governs the lower body.

On the Gengyin day, when the hour is You, it is predicted to rain or snow (from the Farmer's Divination).

On the day of Gengyin in the year of Wuyin, during the first lunar month, using the Zi General added to the You hour to cast the divination, the question was about whether it would rain or snow on that day. Divination for weather is a common practice in the Six壬 system, focusing mainly on the gods of water, fire, wind, and snow represented in the three transmissions, and the heavenly generals they ride. This passage is taken from "The Farmer's Divination Verification."

The course plate is the same as the previous two examples. The day master is added to the酉 hour. The heaven plate is three positions ahead of the earth plate. Teng Snake is on the申, Vermilion Bird on the酉, Liu He on the戌, Gou Chen on the亥, Azure Dragon on the子, Tian Kong on the丑, White Tiger on the寅, Tai Chang on the卯, Black Tortoise on the辰, Tai Yin on the巳, Heavenly Empress on the午, and Nobleman on the未. The four lessons are: the庚 is stationed on the申, the申 has the亥, the亥 has the寅, and the day branch寅 has the巳, which has the申. The three transmissions are:申,亥,寅. The first transmission is申, which is the brother's yao riding on Teng Snake. The middle transmission is亥, which is the son's yao riding on Gou Chen. The final transmission is寅, which is the wife's wealth yao riding on White Tiger. When predicting rain or snow, the申 is the place of growth for water, called the mother of water. The亥 is water, and the寅 is wind. These three characters are the key to determining snow in this course.

Wang Mufu said: The first transmission's Shen is the place where water is born, that is, the so-called "water mother," from which the transmission begins; the Teng Snake is also riding on the Shen of the day stem's lodging palace; the middle transmission shows Hai water; the final transmission's Yin is the wind god, and Yin is exactly the day branch of this day, so the three transmissions return to the day branch. Based on this, it is determined that snow will fall on the day, and heavy snow on the next day. Because Teng Snake is the symbol of snow, and the middle transmission also shows Hai, which is extremely yin water; Yin is in the northeast, and wind comes from the northeast, so snow is expected. Moreover, the three transmissions Shen generates Hai, Hai generates Yin, and they generate one after another. The reason for light snow on the day is that Yin and Hai combine, and combination leads to convergence; the reason for heavy snow on the next day is that the moon general Zi, which the sun rides, is in conflict with Mao, and the conflict between Zi and Mao mainly causes thunder in spring and summer, but in winter it causes snow. It is the same conflict, but it is discussed separately according to the seasons.

On Xinmao day

On the Xinmao day, at the Wu hour of the Chen period, Lin Chengwu divined about his whole life (case record of Fang Ben).

In the summer of the Jiyou year of the Southern Song Dynasty, on the Xinmao day, the divination was cast using the Wu general at the Chen hour. The person seeking the divination, Lin Chengwu, was born in the Bingchen year, and was fifty-four years old at the time. He was asking about his life's fortunes and misfortunes. "Chengwu" was his official title. This entry is also found in the "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian."

Above the upper row 「Wei Shen You Xu」: Teng Snake occupies Wei, Vermilion Bird occupies Shen, Liu He occupies You, and Gou Chen occupies Xu; on the left, Nobleman occupies Wu, Heavenly Empress occupies Si, and Tai Yin occupies Chen; on the right, Azure Dragon occupies Hai, Tian Kong occupies Zi, and White Tiger occupies Chou; below, the positions of Yin and Mao are paired with Tai Chang and Xuan Wu. Nobleman occupies Wu and the twelve generals proceed in order, with Chen hour belonging to the day, using the day nobleman. Wu general added to Chen hour, the Heaven Plate advances two positions compared to the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Xin is in the lodging palace at Xu, with Zi on Xu, which is the first lesson; Zi has寅, which is the second lesson; the day branch Mao has巳, which is the third lesson; and巳 has未, which is the fourth lesson; the four upper spirits Zi, Yin, Si, and Wei are successively occupied by Tian Kong, Tai Chang, Heavenly Empress, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions: the first transmission is巳, which is the official ghost爻, with the hidden stem being Ji, occupying Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is未, which is the parent爻, occupying Teng Snake, with the word 「empty」 in 「parent empty at Wei」 indicating that Wei falls in the empty period — Xin Mao day belongs to the Jiashen period, with Wu and Wei being the empty periods; the final transmission is酉, which is the brother爻, with the hidden stem being Yi, occupying Gou Chen, and酉 is exactly the禄神 of the Xin day.

Shao Yanhe said: When the day stem has the Zi branch, the Xin metal generates Zi water, which is a leakage of my hidden energy. The Zi branch also has Tian Kong, indicating a disease of the lower body involving leakage. Furthermore, the day branch is afflicted by the Broken Branch evil star. In addition, the initiating transmission and the middle transmission both meet Kongwang, and the final transmission also falls on the position of Kongwang. The final transmission's You branch is actually the stem's禄神. When the禄神 falls into Kongwang, the future will not be long. The family's property is afflicted by the Broken Branch, and the sons' divination signs also indicate leakage. This means that several sons are wasting the family's wealth, taking it for themselves, and thus the family's resources are empty. Unless they separate and start anew, it can only be delayed slightly. Otherwise, the family will break down and lose all its wealth. Lin Chengwu has four sons, born from two wives, and the family's affairs were never well-ordered. The things in the hall have been completely stolen by the sons. He himself often suffers from淋病, and the family's fortune is gradually declining.

Original Jia metal meets a spirit that disperses its energy, and the family position also encounters a breaking-up evil omen. Zi is the beginning of the first yang, while Si is the end of the sixth yang; one end starts from the self, and the other ends at the family residence, so initially it should be a leakage from the lower part of the self, and finally it ends at breaking the family. Zi is also the god of offspring, so the one who destroys the family is the son. The first transmission originates from the family position, but the middle and final transmissions both fall into Kongwang, which is called 'not proceeding'. It can only be interpreted by separating the day stem and day branch. Since the middle and final transmissions are both empty, and the first transmission still falls on the family position, it is as if there are no three transmissions, so it can only be interpreted by separating the stem and branch.

If the first transmission is not derived from the house position and the day stem, then a more detailed examination is needed, and it cannot be generally judged as 'not favorable'. However, in this case, the first transmission also carries an additional element of fragmentation. The zi branch is both losing its strength and falling into emptiness, and with six yang elements reaching their end here; the fragmentation serves as the first transmission, with the Heavenly Empress riding upon it. According to numerical calculation, this is called the 'Excessive Woman' hexagram, indicating that his wife is extremely promiscuous. Among the four sons, the fourth, who is the most foolish, is her son, and there are two other sons who are particularly adept at acting secretly. If this hexagram is used to divinate illness, it is a death sentence; if used to divinate prospects, it indicates the complete loss of vital energy and death.
