In the year Jisi of the Qianlong era, on the 12th day of the third lunar month, someone consulted about fengshui (Pastoral Divination Verification).

In the sixth month of the fourth year of Qianlong, on the second day of the third lunar month, which was the Yichou day, the divination was cast by taking the You zodiac as the starting point and using the Wu hour. A person consulted about the good fortune or bad fortune of a piece of burial land. This example is taken from "Mu Fu Zhan Yan."

The divination board. The general is酉 (You), and the time is午 (Wu). The Heaven Plate advances three positions ahead of the Earth Plate: 申 (Shen) is added to the Earth Plate's巳 (Si), 酉 (You) to 午 (Wu), 戌 (Xu) to 未 (Wei), 亥 (Hai) to 申 (Shen), 子 (Zi) to 酉 (You), 丑 (Chou) to 戌 (Xu), 寅 (Yin) to 亥 (Hai), 卯 (Mao) to 子 (Zi), 辰 (Chen) to 丑 (Chou), 巳 (Si) to 寅 (Yin), 午 (Wu) to 卯 (Mao), 未 (Wei) to 辰 (Chen). The Heavenly General starts from 申 (Shen) with the Nobleman, moving in reverse because 申 (Shen) is on the Earth Plate's巳 (Si) position, which is yin. Thus, Teng Snake is on 未 (Wei), Vermilion Bird on 午 (Wu), Liu He on 巳 (Si), Gou Chen on 辰 (Chen), Azure Dragon on 卯 (Mao), Tian Kong on 寅 (Yin), White Tiger on 丑 (Chou), Tai Chang on 子 (Zi), Tai Yin on 戌 (Xu), Heavenly Empress on 酉 (You). The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem 乙 (Yi) is in the Lodging Palace 辰 (Chen), the first lesson has 未 (Wei) on 辰 (Chen), with Teng Snake; the second lesson has 戌 (Xu) on 未 (Wei), with Tai Yin; the third lesson has 辰 (Chen) on 丑 (Chou), with Gou Chen; the fourth lesson has 未 (Wei) on 辰 (Chen), with Teng Snake. The three transmissions on the right: the first transmission is 未 (Wei), which is a wealth yao, hidden stem 辛 (Xin), with Teng Snake; the middle transmission is 戌 (Xu), which is a wealth yao, with Tai Yin, and is empty; the final transmission is 丑 (Chou), which is a wealth yao, hidden stem 乙 (Yi), with White Tiger. 未 (Wei) is the tomb of 乙 (Yi) wood, and 丑 (Chou) is the Day Branch. Both the Day Stem and Day Branch are under the tomb god, which is the key point for the following interpretation.
Wang Mufu said: This piece of land has no good fengshui, it is all rough stone and cannot be bought. When judging fengshui, the day branch is the main consideration. Now the day branch is wearing theTomb Spirit (grave spirit), and the day stem is also wearing theTomb Spirit, indicating that there was previously a grave here, and it was located on flat land, because the earth energy was insufficient, and now it has declined. This time, the grave has not yet been buried, but fengshui has already been selected, so the Teng Snake is used to discuss the underground energy: "Wei" is riding on the Teng Snake, sitting on Chen; Chen is a bad mountain, when Chen and Xu appear together, they become stone; Wei is also not strong, how can one expect completeness? If one insists on burying a grave, the person will also decline, how can one buy it? Later, that person did not believe and still bought it, dug several graves, but all were stones, and then gave up.
In the year Jiyou of the Jianyan era, on the ninth month, on the day Yichou, Shen Baozheng divined about being released from service (case file and oral reference).

In the Jiyou year of the Southern Song dynasty, during the ninth month of the Jiyou year, on the Yichou day, the divination was cast by placing the卯 trigram on the戌 hour. The person named Shen, born in the Renxu year, aged forty-eight, consulted about whether he could be relieved of his duty as a local official. This case is recorded in the "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian."

The lesson board. The hour is戌, with the general (将) on卯. The heaven plate advances five positions ahead of the earth plate:戌 is added to巳,亥 to午,子 to未,丑 to申,寅 to酉,卯 to戌,辰 to亥,巳 to子,午 to丑,未 to寅,申 to卯,酉 to辰. The heavenly general starts from the nobleman (贵人) on申 and proceeds in a clockwise direction: the Teng Snake is on酉, the Vermilion Bird on戌, Liu He on亥, Gou Chen on子, Azure Dragon on丑, Tian Kong on寅, White Tiger on卯, Tai Chang on辰, Black Tortoise on巳, Tai Yin on午, Heavenly Empress on未. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem 乙 is lodged in辰, the first lesson is on辰 with酉, riding the Teng Snake; the second lesson is on酉 with寅, riding Tian Kong; the third lesson is on the day branch丑 with午, riding Tai Yin; the fourth lesson is on午 with亥, riding Liu He. The three transmissions on the right: the first transmission is寅, representing a brother's yao, with the hidden stem丙, riding Tian Kong; the middle transmission is未, representing wealth yao, with the hidden stem辛, riding Heavenly Empress; the final transmission is子, representing parents yao, with the hidden stem甲, riding Gou Chen. In the Six Rats system,寅 is called 'Gongcao', representing officials;酉 is the official ghost for the day of乙, and it is currently placed on the day stem.
Shao Yanhe interpreted that this position of the village head cannot be avoided, and by reason it should be held by him. The酉 (you) is placed on the day stem 乙 (yi) and is multiplied by Teng Snake, indicating that the official ghost is like a snake coiling around himself. The first transmission is 'Gongcao' (寅 yin), meaning the person is already trapped in the official system. Zheng Tigong said that Gongcao governs officials and clerks, and the village head also belongs to the category of clerks. After taking on the position of village head, one would be safe and free from such troubles; if one refuses to accept this duty, he would be detained and must accept it to be released.

Now looking at the year pillar and the house position with the horse (午) riding Tai Yin: there is a person who is a relative of your family's female member, who comes to help you get things done. Tai Yin governs secret matters and is also probing your intentions. The horse (午) in terms of class deity governs speech. However, he turns around and betrays you, becoming an inside informant. The hidden stem of the horse (午) is Geng, which is the dark ghost, and when it is placed on the day branch, it signifies 'internal'. The Yi (乙) is restrained by the metal of You (酉), which represents an official, and when restrained by Teng Snake, it indicates being imprisoned and detained. The first transmission is寅 riding Tian Kong, which governs officials and subordinates. If you do not acknowledge this duty, you will certainly be imprisoned. The Chen (辰) added to the day branch's position forms 'heavenly prison'. The middle transmission is Heavenly Empress, which indicates acknowledging the matter, and it is controlled by寅, which represents an official, and Tian Kong represents the subordinate, so after being appointed as a guardian, you will not be imprisoned and can be at ease. The final transmission is Zi (子) and Wei (未) forming a conflict, and riding Gou Chen. This duty cannot be removed, and even if it is removed, you will have to take it again. Shen Baozheng's later experience indeed matched the prediction: after resigning, he served again nine years later.
In the sixth month of the Jisi year of the Qianlong era, on the Yichou day, a merchant from Yangzhou divined about a monk returning to his post. This is from the "Mu Fu Zhan Yan" (Observations on Divination by the Herdsman).

The lesson disk. The month general is at You, and the time is Chou. The month general and the time are in opposition. The heaven plate moves six places ahead of the earth plate, forming a 'returning echo' lesson. The heaven plate is added to the earth plate as follows: Hai on Si, Zi on Wu, Chou on Wei, Yin on Shen, Mao on You, Chen on Xu, Si on Hai, Wu on Zi, Wei on Chou, Shen on Yin, You on Mao, Xu on Chen. The heavenly general starts from Sheng, riding the nobleman, and moves in a clockwise direction: Teng Snake on You, Vermilion Bird on Xu, Liu He on Hai, Gou Chen on Zi, Azure Dragon on Chou, Tian Kong on Yin, White Tiger on Mao, Tai Chang on Chen, Black Tortoise on Si, Tai Yin on Wu, Heavenly Empress on Wei. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Yi is lodged in Chen, the first lesson has Wu on Chen, riding Vermilion Bird; the second lesson has Chen on Wu, riding Tai Chang; the third lesson has Wei on Chou, riding Heavenly Empress; the fourth lesson has Chou on Wei, riding Azure Dragon. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is Wu, which is a wealth yao, riding Vermilion Bird, and is in the empty period; the middle transmission is Chen, which is a wealth yao, hidden dry branch Wu, riding Tai Chang; the final transmission is again Wu, still riding Vermilion Bird and in the empty period. Wu is the fire tomb, representing the old, while Chen is Tiangang, representing the new. One new and one old opposing each other, this is exactly the key to determining the retention or removal of new and old officials in this lesson.
Wang Mufu explained: In this divination, both the new official and the old official are officials, so how can we determine which one it is? It seems the numbers of the divination will not be confused. Now the three transmissions are戌, 辰, and戌. 辰 represents the new, and戌 represents the old. Since戌 occupies both the beginning and the end, it is actually the old official returning to take office. Since this is a summer divination, the fire墓戌 is the initiating transmission. Although it is in the empty position, it still receives the flourishing energy of the season. Moreover, the repeated movements still return to the day stem, which governs the outside, so he will still take office in an external position. The nobleman is in the position of申, indicating worries about legal matters and also indicating movement. It is also the day's virtue. 丑 corresponds to Yangzhou, 未 is the sun, and 丑 has the azure dragon. The dragon and the yang meet, so there is no disaster. Moreover, the丁 spirit is the day stem's luck, and it is in harmony with the post-horse. In the future, when the energy of戌 becomes stronger and the energy of辰 weakens, the old official will arrive. The day he arrives is probably around the middle of summer and the beginning of autumn. Later, it indeed happened on the last days of June, the day before the beginning of autumn.
Here is a supplementary explanation of the general principles for divining official positions: when divining about official posts, the official star is the main focus, and the post-horse serves as an auxiliary. The day stem represents an external position, while the day branch represents an internal position. To distinguish between new and old: life qi indicates new, death qi indicates old; the tiangang (Chen) being in its旺 period indicates new, and the hekui (Xu) in its weak and confined state indicates old; growth indicates new, and death and墓 indicate old. Extending this, the day stem indicates new, and the day branch indicates old. According to the duties: Shen governs military affairs, and Hai and Zi govern legal matters (the missing character in 「亥子为?法」 is lost in the original text). According to the nobleman: the daytime nobleman in a daytime divination indicates the current position; the nighttime nobleman in a nighttime divination indicates retirement. According to movement and stillness: cutting-off-the-gate lessons indicate activity, returning-echo lessons indicate activity, the post-horse riding growth indicates activity, and the nobleman approaching the chuansong (Shen) indicates activity.
If the divination is about an imperial envoy, then the Post-horse is the main focus, followed by the禄神. Following this approach, there is no case that will not come true.

The divination plate. The general of the day, Shēn, is placed on Chǒu at the time of You. The Heaven Plate advances seven positions ahead of the Earth Plate: Zi is placed on Si of the Earth Plate, Chǒu on Wu, Yin on Wei, Mao on Shen, Chen on You, Si on Xu, Wu on Hai, Wei on Zi, Shēn on Chǒu, You on Yin, Xu on Mao, Hai on Chen. The Heavenly General starts from the Nobleman at You, moving in a clockwise direction: Téng Snake is on Xu, Vermilion Bird on Hai, Liu He on Zi, Gōu Chén on Chǒu, Qing Long on Yin, Tian Kong on Mao, Bai Hu on Chen, Tai Chang on Si, Xuan Wu on Wu, Tai Yin on Wei, Tian Hou on Shēn. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem, Bing, is located in Si, the first lesson is on Si with Zi, riding Liu He; the second lesson is on Zi with Wei, riding Tai Yin; the third lesson is on Yin with You, riding the Nobleman; the fourth lesson is on You with Chen, riding Bai Hu. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is Zi, representing the official ghost of the Day Stem, Bing, hidden stem Jiā, riding Liu He; the middle transmission is Wei, representing the son, hidden stem Xin, riding Tai Yin; the final transmission is Yin, representing the parents, hidden stem Bing, riding Qing Long. Hekui, Xu, rides Téng Snake at the position of Mao on the Earth Plate, and Tiangang, Chen, rides Bai Hu at the position of You on the Earth Plate. The positions of Mao and You are the gate and the door, and the following analysis begins with the instability of these gate and door positions.
Miao Gongda interpreted the divination: This reading indicates that the household is not peaceful, the younger relative is oppressed by the elders, and a lawsuit ensues, leading to imprisonment. However, within twenty days, a nobleman will clear his name. The person will be taken to court and imprisoned on the next day, which is the Dingmao day. Later, it turned out that the older brother accused the younger brother, and finally the county magistrate mediated and resolved the matter.
The reasoning is as follows: Hekui (Xu) and Tiangang (Chen) are respectively occupied by Teng Snake and White Tiger, and are positioned at the卯 and酉 gate positions, indicating instability at the gates. Among the four lessons, three instances show the upper god overcoming the lower god, which indicates that the younger is suffering hardship, hence the elder is oppressing the younger. The Shenhou (Zi) water is the initiating transmission, and water is in a state of captivity in May, while Bing fire is strong and refuses to be controlled by the upper god, thus leading to disputes. The year pillar shows Xu, which is the墓 of Bing fire, indicating imprisonment. The initiating transmission Shenhou (Zi) is the first day of the Jiazi ten-day period, and the year pillar Hekui (Xu) is the first day of the Jiaxu ten-day period, so the period is determined to be twenty days between the two ten-day periods. In the three transmissions, Liu He, Tai Yin, and Qinglong are all auspicious generals, and the lesson pattern is a comparison lesson, hence indicating reconciliation. You is occupied by a nobleman and is located on the day branch, with the nobleman moving in order, and the useful god being metal and water, which are in harmony with the nobleman, thus enabling the nobleman to exonerate the person. The卯 position has Xu, which is the墓 of fire, hence the judgment is that on the Dingmao day, the person will face official charges and imprisonment.
In the year Jia Xu of the Qianlong era, on the 6th month, on the day Bing Yin, Yang Shang divined about a scattered wheel (from the Book of Divination for the Herdsman).
A salt merchant of the Yang surname divined about the "Scattering Wheel" — whether the order of salt sales by the various banners in the Huainan salt monopoly would be disrupted. The divination was performed on the day of Bingyin in the month of Jiaxu of the Qianlong era. The class was set with the hour of Wu added to the hour of You. This example is taken from "Pastoral Divination Verification."

The heavenly general starts from 亥 (hai) with the nobleman. 亥 (hai) is placed on the earth plate's 寅 (yin) position, which is yang, so it proceeds in order: Teng Snake is on 子 (zi), Vermilion Bird on 丑 (chou), Liu He on 寅 (yin), Gou Chen on 卯 (mao), Azure Dragon on 辰 (chen), Tian Kong on 巳 (si), White Tiger on 午 (wu), Tai Chang on 未 (wei), Black Tortoise on 申 (shen), Tai Yin on 酉 (you), Heavenly Empress on 戌 (xu). The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem 丙 (bing) is placed in the 寅 (yin) position, the first lesson has 寅 (yin) with 亥 (hai), riding Liu He; the second lesson has 亥 (hai) with 申 (shen), riding Black Tortoise; the third lesson has the day branch 寅 (yin) with 亥 (hai), riding Black Tortoise; the fourth lesson has 亥 (hai) with 申 (shen), riding Black Tortoise. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is 亥 (hai), which is the official ghost of the day stem, riding the nobleman, marked with '◎' for empty; the middle transmission is 申 (shen), which is the wealth爻, hidden stem 壬 (ren), riding Black Tortoise, and 申 (shen) is also the post-horse of the day; the final transmission is 巳 (si), which is the brother爻, hidden stem 己 (ji), riding Tian Kong. The first transmission 亥 (hai) and the final transmission 巳 (si) are in opposition, which is the basis for the conclusion that this lesson indicates 'eventually dispersing'.
Wang Mufu said: This type of divination inquiry only occurs in the Huainan Salt Office, and it is not found in ancient texts, so there is no ready-made interpretation to follow. The image of "wheel" is that of sequential movement and continuous cycle, which matches perfectly with the "Chuansong" (Transmission) in the middle transmission. On top of that, the position of Shen is also occupied by the Post-horse, making the image even more accurate. The Nobleman is on亥 and initiates the transmission; since the Nobleman represents an official, and亥 is the official office in charge of salt, its position at the beginning of the transmission with the Useful God not being effective indicates insufficient salt supplies, leading to the official's hesitation. Shen falls in the middle transmission, and the final transmission's Si combines with it; the combination of metal and fire indicates hesitation and indecision. However, the first and final transmissions are in opposition, indicating that eventually it will scatter. Once scattered, it will not last long, and later it will reunite again. The period of scattering is in the autumn. Later, it indeed came true. The salt at the various ports in Huainan is sold in turn by each banner in sequence; the so-called "scattering of the wheel" refers to someone selling out of turn and grabbing the sale (the original text ends here, with the following text missing).

The divination plate shows the time of卯 (Mao) with the general at卯 (Mao). The Heaven Plate and Earth Plate are completely aligned, with each of the twelve branches returning to their original positions, forming a Hidden Chant lesson. The Heavenly General starts from亥 (Hai) with the Nobleman:亥 (Hai) is on the Earth Plate at its own position and is yang, so it proceeds in order: Teng Snake is on子 (Zi), Vermilion Bird on丑 (Chou), Liu He on寅 (Yin), Gou Chen on卯 (Mao), Azure Dragon on辰 (Chen), Tian Kong on巳 (Si), White Tiger on午 (Wu), Tai Chang on未 (Wei), Tai Yin on申 (Shen), Heavenly Empress on酉 (You). The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem 丙 (Bing) is in the Lodging Palace at巳 (Si), the first lesson is at巳 (Si) with巳 (Si) again, riding Tian Kong; the second lesson is also at巳 (Si) with巳 (Si) again, riding Tian Kong; the third lesson is at寅 (Yin) with寅 (Yin) again, riding Liu He; the fourth lesson is also at寅 (Yin) with寅 (Yin) again, riding Liu He. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is at巳 (Si), representing a brother's yao, with the hidden stem 己 (Ji), riding Tian Kong; the middle transmission is at申 (Shen), representing wealth yao, with the hidden stem 壬 (Ren), riding Xuan Wu; the final transmission is at寅 (Yin), representing parents yao, with the hidden stem 丙 (Bing), riding Liu He. In a Hidden Chant lesson, the four lessons are paired and identical, so the transmission is initiated by the crime, resulting in the three transmissions of巳 (Si), 申 (Shen), and 寅 (Yin), which correspond to the four Meng positions of寅 (Yin), 申 (Shen), 巳 (Si), and 亥 (Hai).
Liu Rixin interpreted the divination: this is about whether the attendant will arrive, and it should be specifically attributed to the Tian Kong. The person has already started on the way: Si is the "earth foot," also the initiating transmission, and it is located above the day stem, so it is predicted that the person will arrive on the day of Hai. The final transmission Yin is riding on Liu He, which is the image of a boat or vehicle in motion; moreover, Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are the end of the three transmissions. Whenever the Heavenly Horse and the Post-horse are added to the day branch and serve as the initiating transmission, it certainly indicates that the traveler will arrive; then look at the end of the three transmissions to determine the arrival date. If Shen, the Chuansong, falls after the day branch, and the yin spirit also falls after the day branch, then the person has not yet arrived (the question mark in "天?二马" is a missing character in the original text).

The time of the divination is in the fifth year of the Jianyan era of the Southern Song dynasty, on the day of Bingyin in the sixth lunar month. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is辰, representing a son, with the hidden stem 戊, riding White Tiger; the middle transmission is午, representing a brother, with the hidden stem 庚, riding Azure Dragon; the final transmission is申, representing a wealth yao, with the hidden stem 壬, riding Liu He. The three transmissions, moving from辰 to午 to申, ascend step by step, forming the 'ascending three heavens' lesson.
Shao Yanhe interpreted the divination: Chen, Wu, and Shen are called "Deng San Tian" or "ascending to three heavens" divination, because they move forward continuously to higher positions, eventually leading to danger. This type of divination indicates that if used for a traveler, the traveler will not return; if used for illness, the patient will not recover. Now Xu Jinggan obtained this divination for taking office, and it is absolutely forbidden for him to go. He might not return at all. His birth year is exactly on Yin, which is precisely the position of "Deng San Tian," making it especially dangerous for him to go. Xu Jinggan did not believe it, and he left in July of Jiyou year, arriving in western capital in August. He died of illness in May of Gengxu year. After that, his family and relatives could not return either, because the spirit of Feilian rode upon the White Tiger.

The above is from "Kou Jian." Cheng Shuxun notes: The flying crane (Fei Lian) in June is in the Mao position, not the Chen position. The original text's statement here is inconsistent with the example of Fei Lian.
In the year Wushen of the Jianyan era, on the day Bingyin of the second month, Professor Xu divined about his future prospects (from Oral Insights).
In the fifth year of the Jianyan era of the Southern Song dynasty, on the second day of the second lunar month, which was the Bingyin day, the divination was cast with the亥 (Hai) hour as the starting point. Xu Professor was born on the 21st day of the 11th lunar month of the Bingzi year, at the Chou (Chou) hour, his birth sign is Zi (Boar), he is thirty-three years old, and he is consulting about his official career prospects. This example is found in the book "Koujian."

The divination board. The month general is亥, and the time is申. The Heaven Plate advances three positions ahead of the Earth Plate: 申 is placed on the Earth Plate's巳, 酉 on午, 戌 on未, 亥 on申, 子 on酉, 丑 on戌, 寅 on亥, 卯 on子, 辰 on丑, 巳 on寅, 午 on卯, 未 on辰. The Heavenly General starts from亥 and moves with the Nobleman: 亥 is placed on the Earth Plate's申 position, which is yin, so it moves in reverse. Teng Snake is on戌, Vermilion Bird on酉, Liu He on申, Gou Chen on未, Azure Dragon on午, Tian Kong on巳, Bai Hu on辰, Tai Chang on卯, Xuan Wu on寅, Tai Yin on丑, and Tian Hou on子. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem is 丙, which is placed in the Lodging Palace of巳. The first lesson has 申 on巳, riding Liu He; the second lesson has亥 on申, riding the Nobleman; the third lesson has巳 on寅, riding Tian Kong; the fourth lesson has申 on巳, riding Liu He. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is申, which is a wealth yao, with the hidden stem Ren, riding Liu He; the middle transmission is亥, which is the official ghost of the day stem, riding the Nobleman, marked with '◎' for旬空; the final transmission is寅, which is the parent yao, with the hidden stem 丙, riding Xuan Wu. 亥 is both the month general of the second month and the position of the heavenly gate. The following interpretation repeatedly draws its imagery from this position.
Shao Yanhe interpreted the divination: Shen is originally the god of time, but it is placed upon the day stem and is thus overcome by the day stem. Bing represents the husband, Shen the wife, and since it initiates from the day stem, and the empty void falls in the wife's position, it certainly indicates the wife will be harmed. The number of Hai is four, which indicates harm to four wives; in middle age, there will also be damage to descendants, because theLiu He is not in the right place. Shen is the metal of the southwest, falling upon Si, the furnace, and thus being refined, so in the northwest there will be fame. Shen also rides the post-horse of the current day, and the day stem sits upon its own post-horse and gains growth, indicating a career in government that continues until old age. The fire in the residence is supported by the wood of Yin, and this cannot be divided into internal and external. At the age of forty, one will certainly meet a person surnamed Cao and achieve success, and the official position will ultimately be within the six departments. Hai is the month general of this month, so regardless of the empty void, the timing is just slightly delayed.
The Moon General and the Nobleman enter the Three Transmissions; after four years, he will achieve success. He will start from a position of teaching, and then rise to serve in the imperial court. Then looking at寅 which comes to assist the Day Stem, the Heavenly Horse of the eleventh month is located at寅, and寅 is also at the Heaven Gate position亥. The Black Tortoise returns to its original position and becomes the Black Evil; the Black Evil is associated with the position of judicial affairs. The Middle Transmission is the Heaven Gate亥, and寅 is above the Heaven Gate; heaven meets heaven, so this person will certainly first be sent to govern an outer province and meet the feudal lords, then enter the court to serve the Son of Heaven, and hold a position in the six ministries involving judicial affairs.寅, 申, 巳, and亥 are the four cardinal positions, which are responsible for guarding the four directions on behalf of the Son of Heaven, so he must certainly serve four posts as an official outside the capital.
Later events proved that after completing his mourning period, Professor Xu was appointed as the county magistrate of Dehua in Jiangzhou. In the second month of the following year, he took up his post, but his wife Yang died in May. In the first month of the Gengxu year, he married again, this time Li. In the Xinhai year, he was recommended by the supervisor of pacification affairs Liu Dazhong and appointed as a professor in various王府s. Li died again, and he married Mao. This exactly matched the Middle Transmission's亥, moving from a teaching position to another teaching position, and from then on he reached the imperial court. Indeed, four years later, he was transferred from the professorship in the王府s to the position of assistant governor in Raozhou. He then observed mourning for his mother, and upon completing the mourning period, he was appointed as the assistant governor of Xuanchou. At that time, the prefect of the state, Cao Yong, was a close associate of Qin Hui. When Cao went to the capital, he recommended Xu, and Xu was soon summoned. Mao died again, and he married Jiang. He was then transferred to the position of prefect of Jiangyin military state, and was summoned to serve as a supervisory censor. He was later promoted to the position of imperial court censor, and in July he was appointed as the deputy minister of personnel. He was then sent on an official mission and also served as an assistant to the secretariat. He lived to be eighty-six years old.
Cheng Shuxun remarked: The statement says "In November, the Heavenly Horse is in Yin," but this divination was made in February. How can the Heavenly Horse from November be used as the Useful God? This is inconsistent with the method of establishing the example.
In the year of Wushen, sixth lunar month, on the day of Bingyin, what did the three grand ministers divinate about the position of the body (as recorded in the oral commentary and the case records of Fang Ben)?
He Zigan was born in the year of Bingwu, and is now sixty-three years old. He consulted about his own safety. The time of the divination was in the year of Wushen, sixth month, day of Bingyin. The divination was started with the hour of Yin, using the method of adding Wei to Yin. This example is found in the "Koujian" and "Fangben Zhan'an."

The divination plate shows that the Heavenly General is added to the寅 (Yin) hour. The Heaven Plate advances five positions ahead of the Earth Plate:戌 (Xu) is added to the巳 (Si) position,亥 (Hai) to午 (Wu),子 (Zi) to未 (Wei),丑 (Chou) to申 (Shen),寅 (Yin) to酉 (You),卯 (Mao) to戌 (Xu),辰 (Chen) to亥 (Hai),巳 (Si) to子 (Zi),午 (Wu) to丑 (Chou),未 (Wei) to寅 (Yin),申 (Shen) to卯 (Mao), and酉 (You) to辰 (Chen). The Heavenly General starts from酉 (You) with the Nobleman, moving in a clockwise direction: Teng Snake is on戌 (Xu), Vermilion Bird on亥 (Hai), Liu He on子 (Zi), Gou Chen on丑 (Chou), Azure Dragon on寅 (Yin), Tian Kong on卯 (Mao), White Tiger on辰 (Chen), Tai Chang on巳 (Si), Tai Yin on午 (Wu), Heavenly Empress on未 (Wei), and Tian Hou on申 (Shen). The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem 丙 (Bing) is in the巳 (Si) position, the first lesson has戌 (Xu) on巳 (Si), riding Teng Snake; the second lesson has卯 (Mao) on戌 (Xu), riding Tian Kong; the third lesson has未 (Wei) on寅 (Yin), riding Tai Yin; and the fourth lesson has子 (Zi) on未 (Wei), riding Liu He. The three transmissions on the right side are: the first transmission is子 (Zi), representing the official ghost of the Day Stem, with the hidden stem 甲 (Jia), riding Liu He; the middle transmission is巳 (Si), representing the brother, with the hidden stem 己 (Ji), riding Tai Chang; and the final transmission is戌 (Xu), representing the son, riding Teng Snake, marked with the term '◎' for the empty term. Both the Day Stem and Day Branch are accompanied by the tomb god. The ghost in the fourth lesson,子 (Zi), is activated, and the three transmissions return to the Day Stem, which serves as the basis for the subsequent judgment of a ghostly presence causing disturbances.
Shao Yanhe interpreted that the day stem and day branch both carry theTomb Spirit, and the fourth lesson has the子鬼 activated, yet it returns to the day stem. In June, the death deity is in戌 and is乘 by the Teng Snake, indicating there are buried bones beneath the house, along with a confusing evil spirit, which will affect the living. The reason is that the house is built on old graves, with corpses in front and behind. The ghost entering the fourth lesson indicates ghosts within the house; when it returns to the day stem, it gradually harms the body. The main issue is that within eight years, the family will suffer from chronic illness, and five people will die. Although the middle transmission carries life qi, it is overcome and transforms into a ghost, thus being unfavorable; it will be even more difficult to save in the year and month of戌. Upon investigation, it was found that the house of He San Gong was originally on an old graveyard. After hearing this, he went to dig, and fourteen graves were found, all without masters. On the sixth day of September in the year Gengxu, He San Gong died; within seven years, indeed five people died.
The *Bi Fa Fu* says, "Two snakes enclosing the tomb, misfortune is inevitable," and this lesson indeed presents ainauspicious sign. The following passage is damaged, with the words in parentheses all missing. The meaning can be roughly understood as: Further examine the origin of the mountain's momentum, the initiating transmission shows the water of Zi as a ghost, and the ghostly energy spreads continuously to the day stem. The hexagram *Wei* is the heavenly killer, added to the dwelling position, thus indicating the invasion of corpses harming the living. The missing text is not conjectured, and is preserved as it originally was.
In the year Dingmao, during the month of Wei, on the day Bingyin, someone consulted about ghost cries within the house (from the book Pu Fu Zhan Xian).
A person divined about a ghostly cry heard at night in his home; the time was in the year Dingmao, month Wei (June), day Bingyin. The divination was cast using the time of the hour starting with Wei as the starting point. This example is taken from "Pastoral Divination Verification."
The lesson board. At the time of寅 (rat), the heavenly and earthly plates are the same as the previous example, with the heavenly plate advancing five positions ahead of the earthly plate:戌 (dog) adds to巳 (snake),亥 (pig) adds to午 (horse),子 (rat) adds to未 (sheep),丑 (ox) adds to申 (monkey),寅 (rat) adds to酉 (rooster),卯 (rabbit) adds to戌 (dog),辰 (dragon) adds to亥 (pig),巳 (snake) adds to子 (rat),午 (horse) adds to丑 (ox),未 (sheep) adds to寅 (rat),申 (monkey) adds to卯 (rabbit),酉 (rooster) adds to辰 (dragon). The difference here is that this lesson uses the night nobleman. The heavenly general starts from亥 (pig) with the nobleman:亥 (pig) is located at the earthly plate's午 (horse) position, which is yin, so it moves in reverse: Teng Snake is on戌 (dog), Vermilion Bird on酉 (rooster), Liu He on申 (monkey), Gou Chen on未 (sheep), Azure Dragon on午 (horse), Tian Kong on巳 (snake), White Tiger on辰 (dragon), Tai Chang on卯 (rabbit), Tai Yin on寅 (rat), Heavenly Empress on子 (rat). The four middle lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem 丙 (bing) is located in the巳 (snake) palace. The first lesson has戌 (dog) on巳 (snake), with Teng Snake; the second lesson has卯 (rabbit) on戌 (dog), with Tai Chang; the third lesson has未 (sheep) on寅 (rat), with Gou Chen; the fourth lesson has子 (rat) on未 (sheep), with Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions on the right side: the first transmission is子 (rat), representing official ghost, with hidden stem 甲 (jia), riding Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is巳 (snake), representing brother, with hidden stem 己 (ji), riding Tian Kong; the final transmission is戌 (dog), representing son and daughter, riding Teng Snake, with a旬空 (decade void). Heavenly Empress represents crying and women, and子 (rat) corresponds to the middle of the night, so the conclusion is that it is a female ghost crying at midnight.
Wang Mufu explained: The ghost arises from among the four lessons, indicating it is a ghost within the house. The Heavenly Empress governs crying, and the hour of Zi is midnight, so the Heavenly Empress also represents a female ghost. The ritual god represents a superior elder. This ghost comes from the northeast and departs toward the northwest, indicating there is an ill omen of month aversion in the family. It comes only to warn, not to harm. The middle transmission is accompanied by Tian Kong, which is a deity responsible for reporting matters, also the month aversion evil spirit, and also life qi. Therefore, the family may have unclear matters; otherwise, why would the three transmissions originate from within the house and reach the Xu place? Xu is the grave of Bing day, and it also belongs to the day stem. The grave suppresses the Bing fire, and the day branch also carries a grave. Both people and the house are attracting bad luck, and matters are unclear, so one should be cautious. Whenever encountering matters, as long as one understands the principles clearly, upholds righteousness, has a kind heart, considers the whole situation, is willing to give up small matters to maintain order both inside and outside, and is willing to yield a step, calamities will naturally be far away.
On the 17th day of the 6th lunar month, at the hour of the snake (午) and the time of the dog (未), divination was performed to determine the intention of the coming event (One Character Linked Ring).

On the 17th day of the sixth month, using the hour of午 (horse) as the starting point for the time of未 (sheep), the divination was cast to determine the matter the visitor is inquiring about. This example is taken from the "One-Character Jade Linked Ring."

The lesson board. The general is placed on the hour of Wei, and the Heaven Plate is one position behind the Earth Plate: Chen is placed on the Earth Plate's Si, Si on Wu, Wu on Wei, Wei on Shen, Shen on You, You on Xu, Xu on Hai, Hai on Zi, Zi on Chou, Chou on Yin, Yin on Mao, Mao on Chen. The Heavenly General starts from the Nobleman riding Hai, moving in a clockwise direction: Teng Snake rides Zi, Vermilion Bird rides Chou, Liu He rides Yin, Gou Chen rides Mao, Azure Dragon rides Chen, Tian Kong rides Si, White Tiger rides Wu, Tai Chang rides Wei, Black Tortoise rides Shen, Tai Yin rides You, Heavenly Empress rides Xu. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem, Ji, is located in Si, the first lesson has Chen on Si, riding Azure Dragon; the second lesson has Mao on Chen, riding Gou Chen; the third lesson has Yin on Mao, riding Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson has Chou on Yin, riding Teng Snake. The three transmissions on the right: the first transmission is Zi, representing the official ghost of the Day Stem, hidden stem Ji, riding Teng Snake; the second transmission is Hai, also an official ghost, riding Nobleman, in the empty period; the third transmission is Xu, representing the son, riding Heavenly Empress, also in the empty period. In the Six Rats system, Zi is called 'Shenhou', Hai is called 'Dengming', Xu is called 'Tiankui', and Chen is called 'Tiangang', these divine names are used in the following interpretations.
Xu Cibin explained: The person's matter is about attending a banquet near water in the north, where he got into an argument with someone who has a sharp forehead and small eyes. Then a nobleman helped the other side, so he suppressed his anger and wanted to go to the authorities to complain. Later, a man named Wang mediated and prevented any incident. The reasoning is: The door of the matter shows Tai Chang, which governs wine and food. The initiating transmission is亥 and子, which are in the north and near water. The 'Shenhou' Zi is the ghost of the day stem Jia, and it is above Teng Snake, which represents the person with a sharp forehead and small eyes. The middle transmission 'Dengming' Hai is also the ghost of the day stem, and it is above a nobleman, so there is a nobleman helping the other side. The day stem sees 'Tiangang' Chen, which is earth and can control the water of Hai and Zi, and it also governs anger, so it is said he suppressed his anger. When anger is extreme, he wants to go to the authorities, but the lesson pattern is the 'ratio' pattern, which governs reconciliation. The final transmission 'Tiankui' Xu is on top of Hai, and the shape of Hai relates to the character 'Wang', so it is said a man named Wang mediated.
