On the day of Ji Mao (乙未) in the third lunar month of the Bing Zi (丙子) year, the eunuch Feng Yunsheng of the Imperial Stables was arrested, and the Ministry of Punishment had already sentenced him to death. A divination was sought to determine the fortune. This case is taken from the "Six Rats Guide." On this day, the Wu General was added to the卯 (卯) hour, and the branches on the Heaven Plate were seven positions ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The卯 hour belonged to the daytime, and on an Yi day, the nobleman was located at Zi during the day. The nobleman rode on the Heaven Plate's Zi, which was located on the Earth Plate's Si, belonging to the Yin side. The heavenly generals were arranged in reverse order: the nobleman rode on the Heaven Plate's Zi, which was located on the Earth Plate's Si; the Heavenly Empress rode on the Heaven Plate's Chou, which was located on the Earth Plate's Wu; Tai Yin rode on the Heaven Plate's Yin, which was located on the Earth Plate's Wei; Xuan Wu rode on the Heaven Plate's Mao, which was located on the Earth Plate's Shen; Tai Chang rode on the Heaven Plate's Chen, which was located on the Earth Plate's You; Bai Hu rode on the Heaven Plate's Si, which was located on the Earth Plate's Xu; Tian Kong rode on the Heaven Plate's Wu, which was located on the Earth Plate's Hai; Qing Long rode on the Heaven Plate's Wei, which was located on the Earth Plate's Zi; Gou Chen rode on the Heaven Plate's Shen, which was located on the Earth Plate's Chou; Liu He rode on the Heaven Plate's You, which was located on the Earth Plate's Yin; Zhu Que rode on the Heaven Plate's Xu, which was located on the Earth Plate's Mao; and Teng Snake rode on the Heaven Plate's Hai, which was located on the Earth Plate's Chen. The four lessons were arranged from right to left: the wood of Yi was located in Chen, with the branch of Hai on Chen, which was the first lesson; the branch of Wu was on Hai, which was the second lesson; the branch of Yin was on Wei, which was the third lesson; and the branch of You was on Yin, which was the fourth lesson. The upper spirits successively rode on Teng Snake, Tian Kong, Tai Yin, and Liu He. The three transmissions were Wu, Chou, and Shen: the first transmission was Wu fire riding Tian Kong, with the hidden dry branch Ji, which was "son and daughter"; the middle transmission was Chou earth riding Heavenly Empress, with the hidden dry branch Xin, which was "wife and wealth"; and the final transmission was Shen metal riding Gou Chen, with the hidden dry branch Bing, which was "official and ghost."

Chen Gongxian said: This person is certainly going to encounter a heavenly pardon and show signs of being reinstated and reappointed. Because the day stem carries the "Imperial Grace" deity, and the day branch, which is寅, also carries the "Heavenly Pardon" deity (the Heavenly Pardon in spring's third month is in寅, but here it is not necessary to strictly use the year's寅 as the Heavenly Pardon). Moreover, the Tai Su of the Bingzi year, which is子, is riding on the Nobleman and generates and supports the day stem. Although the crime is extremely severe, it can turn from bad to good. The three transmissions have the fire of午 generating the earth of丑, and the earth of丑 generating the metal of申; the Heavenly General also follows in sequence and generates each other. The first transmission午 and the final transmission申 are one before and one after, enclosing the person's original destiny子's upper deity未 in the middle (the original destiny子 has the deity未, and the first and final transmissions午 and申 exactly enclose it), forming the "leading and following" pattern. It is certain that a high-ranking official will recommend him. Later, in May, he was ordered to undergo a hot review, and his serious crime was pardoned and changed to a sentence of exile to the capital garrison, where he was to establish merit. Afterwards, he supervised the generals Hong and He, and fought alongside me to suppress the rebels, and was reinstated due to his meritorious service.

On Yiwei day, Qi Si Zong divined that the opportunity was lost and the punishment was severe (Six Rats Guide).

Heavenly Empress is on the Earth Plate at午 and is also on the Heaven Plate at丑. Tai Yin is on the Earth Plate at未 and on the Heaven Plate at寅. Black Tortoise is on the Earth Plate at申 and on the Heaven Plate at卯. Tai Chang is on the Earth Plate at酉 and on the Heaven Plate at辰. White Tiger is on the Earth Plate at戌 and on the Heaven Plate at巳. Tian Kong is on the Earth Plate at亥 and on the Heaven Plate at午. Azure Dragon is on the Earth Plate at子 and on the Heaven Plate at未. Gou Chen is on the Earth Plate at丑 and on the Heaven Plate at申. Liu He is on the Earth Plate at寅 and on the Heaven Plate at酉. Vermilion Bird is on the Earth Plate at卯 and on the Heaven Plate at戌. Teng Snake is on the Earth Plate at辰 and on the Heaven Plate at巳. The Four Lessons are arranged from right to left as亥 with乙 (乙 is in the Lodging Palace at辰),午 with亥,寅 with未, and酉 with寅. The upper gods are successively乘 Teng Snake, Tian Kong, Tai Yin, and Liu He. The Three Transmissions are午,丑, and申. The first Transmission is午 with Fire and Tian Kong, with the hidden heavenly stem 甲, representing 'Son'. The second Transmission is丑 with Earth and Heavenly Empress, with the hidden heavenly stem 辛, representing 'Wife and Wealth'. The third Transmission is申 with Metal and Gou Chen, with the hidden heavenly stem 丙, representing 'Official Ghost'.

Chen Gongxian said: In June, there would be a pardon, turning misfortune into good fortune. This is because the god of growth is present on the day stem (the亥 is the growth of wood, and it is directly above the day stem, here not considering the layer of "growth sitting in the tomb"), and the god of heavenly pardon is added to the day branch. Moreover, the year stem and nobleman both serve as benevolent stars, so even if the crime is serious, it would be mitigated. Especially pleasing is that the three transmissions and heavenly general are successively mutually generated, the first transmission at午 and the final transmission at申 secretly supporting his true birth sign of未 (here not considering the theory of supporting the upper god). There is still a recommendation from officials and ministers, indicating a sign of re-entering officialdom later. Later, indeed, in June he was ordered to conduct a hot review, his crime was pardoned and he was reprimanded and sent to serve in the capital military camp to atone for his crime; later, in the year of Xinsi, he was promoted to the position of参将 in the military command of Gansu.

Bingshen day

On Bingshen day, Liu Taishi interpreted the divination for the imperial selection (Liulín Zhuan Nan)

In the year Dingchou of the Chongzhen era, on the day of Bingshen in the eighth lunar month, a divination was cast using the time of巳 (snake) and the general of巳 (snake) added to the hour of巳 (snake). Liu Taishi of the Han clan asked whether Yuan Fuying, a deputy inspector of Huguang, and his fellow townsman Zheng Dashikong (Ministry of Works Minister), as well as the two gentlemen Xuan Yue, would be recommended for the cabinet and whether their appointment would succeed. This example is taken from the "Six壬 Guide." The month general and the hour are in the same position, and the heaven plate and earth plate are completely identical, forming a "Hidden Chant" lesson. The hour of巳 (snake) belongs to the day time, and on a day of丙 (bing), the nobleman (day's nobleman) is at亥 (pig). The nobleman is on the earth plate at亥 (pig), which belongs to the yang side. The heavenly generals are arranged in order: the nobleman rides亥 (pig), the Teng Snake rides子 (rat), the Vermilion Bird rides丑 (ox), the Liu He rides寅 (tiger), the Gou Chen rides卯 (rabbit), the Azure Dragon rides辰 (dragon), the Tian Kong rides巳 (snake), the White Tiger rides午 (horse), the Tai Chang rides未 (goat), the Black Tortoise rides申 (monkey), the Tai Yin rides酉 (rooster), and the Heavenly Empress rides戌 (dog). Since the heaven plate and earth plate are the same, each general is on its own branch. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the fire of丙 (bing) is lodged in the palace of巳 (snake), and the palace of巳 (snake) is still巳 (snake), which is the first lesson; the palace of巳 (snake) is still巳 (snake), which is the second lesson; the day branch is申 (monkey), and the palace of申 (monkey) is still申 (monkey), which is the third lesson; the palace of申 (monkey) is still申 (monkey), which is the fourth lesson. The upper gods ride in order: Tian Kong, Tian Kong, Xuan Wu, Xuan Wu. The three transmissions are巳 (snake),申 (monkey), and寅 (tiger). The transmission is formed by the Hidden Chant and self-punishment. The first transmission is the fire of巳 (snake) riding Tian Kong, which is the "companion" of丙 (bing) and also the禄神 (lucky god) of the day of丙 (bing). It falls in the empty space (the day of丙申 belongs to the旬 of Jiawu, and the empty space is in辰 (dragon) and巳 (snake)). The middle transmission is the metal of申 (monkey) riding Xuan Wu, with the hidden character丙 (bing), which is the "wife's wealth." The final transmission is the wood of寅 (tiger) riding Liu He, with the hidden character壬 (ren), which is the "parents," and寅 (tiger) is also theThe Post-horse (post-horse) of the day of申 (monkey).

Chen Gongxian said: Both of you will not be appointed to the cabinet, and you will be impeached by the censors and officials of the imperial council and then dismissed. How do you know this? The three transmissions show that the snake is in conflict with the monkey, and the monkey is in conflict with the tiger, with each one attacking the other in succession, showing no harmonious energy. The propitious day is a strong day and also meets the hidden chant, and the lesson also shows the post-horse, indicating the sign of returning home. What else could this be but the imperial council having something to say? Later, both of you indeed failed to be recommended for office. Yuan was impeached and dismissed from office, and Zheng was arrested on account of the imperial case, and was sentenced and then returned home. Because Zheng's native star shows both the earth net and the day tomb, the calamity he suffered was especially severe.

In divination regarding official career prospects, if the three transmissions mutually control and attack each other, it is a very ominous omen. Although this lesson's initiating transmission is based on the day's virtue and the day's fortune combined with the month's general, the巳 is already in the旬空, and it is also occupied by Tian Kong. This is extremely empty. At this time, the sun is not in the night direction, yet it has no effect at all. This clearly shows that the saying "the month's general does not fall into emptiness" is completely wrong. Remember this, remember this! Further analyzing the lesson's imagery: Zheng Ruyue (i.e., the previously mentioned Xuan Yue Master) was born in the year of Xu. His personal destiny's yin spirit on Xu is occupied by Tian Hou. Xu is the position of hell and also the spirit of darkness and stagnation. The darkness can be imagined.

On Bingshen day, Yi the scholar divined about his father's illness (from Fang Ben Zhan An · Kou Jian).

In the year Jiyou of the Jianyan era, on the day Bingshen of the tenth month, the classmate Yi used the hour of Yin to cast a divination lesson. He was consulting about his father's illness. His father was born in the year Bingchen and is sixty-four years old. This example is taken from "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian." The month general and the hour are in the same position, and the heaven plate and earth plate overlap, forming a "Fu Yin" lesson. The hour of Yin belongs to the night. On the day of Bing, the night nobleman is in You. The nobleman is on the earth plate in You, which is a yin position. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order: the nobleman rides You, the Teng Snake rides Shen, the Vermilion Bird rides Wei, the Liu He rides Wu, the Gou Chen rides Si, the Azure Dragon rides Chen, the Tian Kong rides Mao, the White Tiger rides Yin, the Tai Chang rides Chou, the Black Tortoise rides Zi, the Tai Yin rides Hai, and the Heavenly Empress rides Xu. Each general is on its own branch. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: Bing is lodged in Si, and Si remains Si, which is the first lesson; Si is on Si, which is the second lesson; the day branch is Shen, and Shen remains Shen, which is the third lesson; Shen is on Shen, which is the fourth lesson. The upper spirits ride Gou Chen, Gou Chen, Teng Snake, and Teng Snake in sequence. The three transmissions are Si, Shen, and Yin: the first transmission is Si fire riding Gou Chen, which falls into the empty旬, representing "brother"; the middle transmission is Shen metal riding Teng Snake, with the hidden heavenly stem being Bing, representing "wife's wealth"; the final transmission is Yin wood riding the White Tiger, with the hidden heavenly stem being Ren, representing "parents."

Shao Yanhe said: This reading starts from the day stem and transmits to the wife's palace, then returns to the parents'爻. For people over sixty years old who are seeking a divination about illness, it is most undesirable to see the parents'爻 -- since the parents have already passed away, encountering the parents'爻 again signifies going to the afterlife to meet the parents again. His age also coincides with his own stem (the age of Si, which is the lodging palace of Bing, and Bing is his own stem, so his age coincides with his own stem; from this we can determine that he is indeed sixty-four years old).

The root of the illness lies in matters of wealth and old affairs not being fulfilled: in the year of You, the wealth in the middle of Shen is considered the "Bingfu" (Disease Symbol), and the Bingfu signifies entanglements with past matters. This clearly indicates the year Jiyou. His father's birth year must be the year Bingwu. These matters have caused emotional distress. In the divination, the wealth element has entered the lesson, indicating financial difficulties and discord with the wife, which has led to illness. The final transmission is the wood of Yin, which is the life qi of the fire of Bing. This lesson would not have led to death; however, the father's grave is located in the Gen direction (mountain), with wind from the left blowing the bones around and white ants entering the coffin from the right. If the grave is moved quickly, longevity can be extended; otherwise, the person will pass away.

The illness of Master Yi's father began because he had spent all his money on marrying his son, leading to many troubles and a troubled mind. As a result, his heart fire rose, he became thirsty, and his condition worsened day by day. Moreover, his son had no place to study, adding more worries. Master Shao told him to move the grave, so he moved it to a favorable direction, and the idea of relocating the burial was decided. When the coffin was opened, indeed, the wind from the earth had blown the bones inside upside down, and there were white ants all over the coffin, with soil blocking the way. They then replaced the coffin and changed the burial place, and the illness gradually improved, and he eventually recovered. The next year, his son obtained a good study room, and their life became more comfortable. The old man lived happily until he reached the age of eighty.

Cheng Shuxun remarked: On a day of Bing fire, the寅 (Yin) is considered the parent's yao. The Yin also has the White Tiger, so it is determined that the parents' grave is unstable. For people over sixty, seeing the parent's yao is generally unfavorable, but since the Yin is the long life of the Bing fire, it is not fatal. Therefore, the divination is interpreted from the parents' grave. The ominous sign of ants comes from the White Tiger riding on the Yin. This divination is a hidden chant, with both upper and lower parts being parent's yao, unlike other divination methods which can take one part alone. I add: The Yin wood represents wind, so the wind from the earth moves the bones around. Divining illness leads to the discussion of an unfavorable grave, both explaining the root of the illness and the disaster of the grave.

On Bingshen day, Zhubi presented a divination concerning state affairs, border affairs, and annual matters (direct and to the point).

In the year of Renyin of the Chunyu era, during the first lunar month on the day of Bingshen, by imperial decree, a divination was performed to predict the state affairs, border matters, and harvest conditions of the year. This example is taken from "Yizhen Jianxue." The divination pattern is the same as the previous example, still a "Fuyin" lesson with the Heaven and Earth plates overlapping. The Nobleman is riding the酉 (You), the Teng Snake is riding the申 (Shen), the Vermilion Bird is riding the未 (Wei), the Liu He is riding the午 (Wu), the Gou Chen is riding the巳 (Si), the Azure Dragon is riding the辰 (Chen), the Tian Kong is riding the卯 (Mao), the White Tiger is riding the寅 (Yin), the Tai Chang is riding the丑 (Chou), the Black Tortoise is riding the子 (Zi), the Tai Yin is riding the亥 (Hai), and the Heavenly Empress is riding the戌 (Xu), each general is stationed on their own branch. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are Si adding Jia (Jia's lodging palace is Si), Si adding Si, Shen adding Shen, Shen adding Shen. The upper gods are successively riding Gou Chen, Gou Chen, Teng Snake, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions are Si, Shen, and Yin: the first transmission is Si fire riding Gou Chen, falling into the empty term, representing "brother"; the middle transmission is Shen metal riding Teng Snake, with the hidden dry branch Jia, representing "spouse wealth"; the final transmission is Yin wood riding White Tiger, with the hidden dry branch Ren, representing "parents."

Zhu Bi submitted a memorial stating: The divination of a hidden chant indicates a state of quiet with movement, similar to last year, which involved the appointment and dismissal of high officials and disturbances in border regions. The first transmission is巳, which in the twelve spirits is called 'Taiyi', and it is both the monthly virtue and the daily virtue. The position of巳 is at the extreme of the six yang, which is naturally a place of change, yet two virtuous spirits are precisely located here, resembling the image of a well-governed state. The middle transmission is today's day branch申, which is accompanied by 'Teng Snake'; Teng Snake pairs with丁, which is the heavenly virtue of the first month. Now, when I cast the divination for the state, the day branch represents the residence, which points exactly to the imperial palace. The heavenly virtue has not yet revealed its blessings, making it an auspicious time for joyous events. The final transmission is寅, which in the twelve spirits is called 'Gongcao', and it is the ruler of this year's Renyin Tai sui. Its position is also precisely the root and place of birth of today's propitious fire, indicating a presage of affairs.

The White Tiger presides over military strife and disturbances; the alarm caused by the coming of troops mentioned by the minister is consistent with this. However, the metal associated with the White Tiger is unable to withstand the fire of Bingwu; it should be able to overcome the fire and not cause harm. The rat (Zi) and the snake (Si) are associated with grains and rice, and they are under the protection of virtuous deities, so there should be a good harvest this year. The tiger (Yin) is associated with beans, but it is inevitably affected by the White Tiger's calamity, so the harvest is likely to be poor and insufficient.

On Bingshen day, Ruan Shifu sought a divination in Yanjing from the Six壬 Guide.

In the fourth month of the Dingchou year of the Chongzhen era, on the Bingshen day, a divination was cast using the You general and the You hour. Ruan Shifu in Beijing sought divination, but did not state the question. This example is taken from the "Six壬 Guide." The month general and the hour are in the same position, and the heaven plate and earth plate overlap, forming a "Hidden Chant" lesson. The You hour belongs to the night, and the night nobleman for the Bing day is in You. The nobleman is on the earth plate in You, which is the yin position. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order: the nobleman rides You, the Teng Snake rides Shen, the Vermilion Bird rides Wei, the Liu He rides Wu, the Gou Chen rides Si, the Azure Dragon rides Chen, the Tian Kong rides Mao, the White Tiger rides Yin, the Tai Chang rides Chou, the Black Tortoise rides Zi, the Tai Yin rides Hai, and the Heavenly Empress rides Xu, each general riding their own branch. The four lessons, from right to left, are Si added to Bing (Bing's lodging palace is Si), Si added to Si, Shen added to Shen, and Shen added to Shen. The upper gods in sequence ride Gou Chen, Gou Chen, Teng Snake, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions are Si, Shen, and Yin. The first transmission is Si fire riding Gou Chen, which is the "brother" of Bing and also the禄神 of the Bing day, but it falls in the旬空 (the empty position of the Bingshen day, which belongs to the Jia Wu decade, with the empty position in Chen and Si). The middle transmission is Shen metal riding Teng Snake, with the hidden dry branch being Bing, which is the "wife's wealth." The final transmission is Yin wood riding the White Tiger, with the hidden dry branch being Ren, which is the "parents," and Yin is also theThe Post-horse of the Shen day.

Chen Gongxian said: A person in official position receiving this lesson indicates he will be impeached by officials of the examination and advisory departments and the provincial government, and will be dismissed in autumn. He was then asked about his birth year. The answer was Guiyou. This man must be in a position of prime minister, but will not hold the post for long. Because the sun, the month general, and the nobleman all fall on his birth year (the month general is You, which is called 'Congkui' in the twelve spirits, and is riding the nobleman, which is in the You destiny). Is this not the prime minister? The only drawback is that the three transmissions are mutually controlling, and there is also a hidden chant, along with the Ding spirit and the post-horse, which certainly indicates impeachment and action. Moreover, the sun has already set westward, how many can reverse the sun's course like Lu Yang waving his spear? Later it was found out that this was about Wen Tiren, the chief minister of Wucheng, and indeed he was impeached afterwards, and was allowed to return home by post in autumn. (Whenever the Ding spirit and the post-horse appear, one must interpret it as movement. The three transmissions mutually controlling indicate that people are deceiving each other, so it is interpreted as impeachment and action.)

On a Wu day, the Hidden Chant occurs, and the three transmissions successively control and attack each other, with the final transmission also controlling the day stem. On a Bing day, the Hidden Chant occurs, and although the three transmissions successively control each other, they do not control the day stem. However, on a Bingshen day, the transmission starts from the day stem's lodging palace, and successively controls through each transmission to the final transmission Yin, and Yin exactly conflicts with the day branch Shen. The stem represents oneself, and the branch represents others. This ten-day cycle indicates a situation where oneself is about to accuse others, which corresponds to the incident where Wen Tiren and Zhang Hanru conspired to exclude Qian Qianyi and Qu Shisi. The character "Qian" has a metal radical, and "Si" is also a metal farming tool, both relating to the day branch Shen metal. Wen Tiren proposed an imperial edict to arrest and punish Qian Qianyi, and Qian Qianyi sought help from the chief eunuch Cao Huachun of the Imperial Attendant Office. When Wen Tiren found out, he also charged Cao Huachun, which corresponds to Yin representing the surname Cao.

But he did not realize that the寅 position was occupied by the White Tiger, and the hidden壬 water returned to attack the day stem. This should indicate that Cao Huachun reversed himself and voluntarily requested an investigation into the case, uncovering the secret plot of Wen and Zhang, and reporting it to the emperor. The emperor then ordered Zhang Hanru to be publicly executed in a wooden cage. In June, Wen Tiren claimed illness and returned to his hometown. After a year, when the Tai Sui reached寅, Wen Tiren also died. This is an example of the White Tiger multiplying the hidden stem ghost causing great harm. Moreover, since the day's禄巳 has fallen into Kongwang, and the position of the Azure Dragon, which is on辰, also falls into Kongwang, how could he not be dismissed from office? Intending to harm others, they ended up harming themselves. By observing the patterns of this lesson, both success and failure can be foreseen. The Six Rats school is so subtle and comprehensive, possessing such miraculous insights.

On Bingshen day, the patron consulted about future prospects (Oral Mirror · Fang Ben Divination Case)

In the year of the Earth Ox, fifth month, fifteenth day of the ninth month, the day is the year of the Fire Monkey, and the time is the hour of the Earth Dragon. The divination is started with the hour of the Earth Dragon added to the hour of the Ox. The client, born on the seventh day of the seventh month of the year of the Water Rat at the hour of the Pig, is thirty-four years old, is asking about his future. This case is taken from the "Oral Insights" and "Case Book of Divination." The branches on the Heaven Plate are three positions ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The hour of the Ox is night, and the nobleman of the day of the Fire Monkey is in the West. The nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at the West and on the Earth Plate at the午, which is the Yin side. The Heavenly Generals are arranged in reverse order: the nobleman is on the West at the午, the Teng Snake is on the申 at the巳, the Vermilion Bird is on the未 at the辰, the Liu He is on the午 at the卯, the Gou Chen is on the巳 at the寅, the Azure Dragon is on the辰 at the丑, the Tian Kong is on the卯 at the子, the White Tiger is on the寅 at the亥, the Tai Chang is on the丑 at the戌, the Black Tortoise is on the子 at the酉, the Tai Yin is on the亥 at the申, and the Heavenly Empress is on the戌 at the未. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Fire element is in the巳, and the巳 has the申, which is the first lesson; the申 has the亥, which is the second lesson; the day branch 申 has the亥, which is the third lesson; the亥 has the寅, which is the fourth lesson. The upper spirits are successively the Teng Snake, Tai Yin, Tai Yin, and White Tiger. The three transmissions are 申,亥,寅: the first transmission is the Metal 申, which is the Teng Snake, and the hidden stem is the Fire 丙, which is "wealth"; the middle transmission is the Water 亥, which is the Tai Yin, and the hidden stem is the Earth 己, which overcomes the Fire 丙 and is "official ghost"; the final transmission is the Wood 寅, which is the White Tiger, and the hidden stem is the Water 壬, which is "parents." The day branch 申 is placed on the day stem's lodging palace at the巳, which is "branch approaching the stem," and the lesson name is "bridegroom."

Shao Yanhe said: When the day branch approaches the day stem and is overcome by it, this person does not have a proper home, and is mostly staying in temples or monasteries or living in another town, or living with his wife's family. Because the name of the divination is "Zhuixu" (a赘婿), he does not have a fixed residence. The three transmissions contain Teng Snake and White Tiger, which certainly indicates many funerals; in the end, his official position will only be a subordinate official such as a Cao Yuan. The final transmission has寅wood riding on White Tiger, so in the end he can only hold a position in a state with water nearby. Later, he indeed experienced four funerals for his parents, and indeed in the Jiazi year he was appointed as the chief recorder of Jiangyin Military, but in the Jisi year something happened.

Cheng Shuxun says: The dwelling爻 (day branch) is placed above the day stem and is overcome by the day stem. The dwelling is seen as亥 water, with申 metal generating亥 in reverse. Where is there any proper dwelling? The final transmission寅 wood has its growth in亥, and丙 fire also has its growth in寅, so it is said to be a state by the water.寅 in the category of spirits is associated with the position of a clerk, and the position of a recorder also belongs to this category. Generally, when divining about officials,寅 and申 are the spirits indicating transfer. Here, however, it is disturbed by Teng Snake and White Tiger, so the official position only reaches the level of a recorder.

Dingyou day

On Dingyou day, Liu Jingli examined the case of Liang Dashima, who consulted the Six壬 Guide, regarding the position of the Grand Minister (Zongzai).

In the year Xinwei of the Chongzhen era, on the day Dingyou of the third lunar month at the hour of Mao, Liu Jingli asked about whether General Liang, who was recommended for the position of Zhongzai (Ministry of Personnel), would be approved. This example is taken from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nan." For the third month, the general is set as Xu, added to the hour of Mao. The branches on the Heaven Plate are seven positions ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The hour of Mao is during the day, and on a Ding day, the nobleman (day's nobleman) is at Hai. The nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at Hai and on the Earth Plate at Chen, which belongs to the Yang side. The heavenly generals are arranged in order: the nobleman is at Hai over Chen, the Teng Snake is at Zi over Si, the Vermilion Bird is at Chou over Wu, the Liu He is at Yin over Wei, the Gou Chen is at Mao over Shen, the Azure Dragon is at Chen over You, the Tian Kong is at Si over Xu, the White Tiger is at Wu over Hai, the Tai Chang is at Wei over Zi, the Tai Yin is at Shen over Chou, the Black Tortoise is at You over Yin, and the Heavenly Empress is at Xu over Mao. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the fire of Ding is in the lodging palace of Wei, with the branch of Yin on Wei, which is the first lesson; the branch of You is on Yin, which is the second lesson; the branch of Chen is on You, which is the third lesson; and the branch of Hai is on Chen, which is the fourth lesson. The upper spirits are successively mounted on Liu He, Tai Yin, Azure Dragon, and Nobleman. The three transmissions are Hai, Wu, and Chou, moving backward step by step: the first transmission is water at Hai, mounted on the nobleman, with the hidden dry branch Ji, which is the official ghost, and it overcomes the fire of Ding; the middle transmission is fire at Wu, mounted on the White Tiger, with the hidden dry branch Ji, which is the same as Ding, thus being a companion, and Wu is also the禄神 (lucky god) of Ding; the final transmission is earth at Chou, mounted on the Vermilion Bird, with the hidden dry branch Xin, which is the son.

Chen Gongxian said: Not only is there no promotion, but one will even have to resign without cause. This is because the post-horse in the day branch,亥, is sitting on the storage branch,辰, the禄神,午, is located on the绝地,亥, and the three transmissions and the heavenly general are all moving in reverse. Moreover, the official star and nobleman on the native's chart are stepping on the "Heavenly Net" area, and the year branch is riding on the Teng Snake, which also serves as the day ghost. Once summer comes, there will be some disturbance. Fortunately, the official and ghost divination elements are all falling on the Kongwang, so although the official position is lost, there is no great disaster. Later, he was impeached by a major official from Zhejiang and had to resign. Wan Gong, named Yingshou from Shandong, also got this divination at the辰 hour on Renshen. He was also arrested and charged with a crime, and then returned home.

On Dingyou day, Zeng Yelin divined whether there would be snow the next day (Six Rats Guide).

On the day of Dingyou in the twelfth lunar month, during the hour of Mao, Mr. Zeng Leng asked whether it would snow again the next day after a snowfall, with the sky being dark and cloudy. This example is taken from the "Six壬 Guide." In the twelfth month, the month general is Chou, added to the hour of Mao. The branches on the heaven plate are two positions behind those on the earth plate. The hour of Mao is daytime, and for a Ding day, the daytime nobleman is in Hai. The nobleman is on the heaven plate in Hai and on the earth plate in Chou, which belongs to the yang side. The heavenly generals are arranged in order: the nobleman is on Hai over Chou, the teng snake is on Zi over Yin, the vermilion bird is on Chou over Mao, the liu he is on Yin over Chen, the gou chen is on Mao over Si, the azure dragon is on Chen over Wu, the tian kong is on Si over Wei, the white tiger is on Wu over Shen, the tai chang is on Wei over You, the tai yin is on You over Xu, the black tortoise is on Xu over Hai, and the heavenly empress is on Hai over Zi. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the fire of Ding is lodged in Wei, and Wei has巳, which is the first lesson;巳 has Mao, which is the second lesson; the day branch You has Wei, which is the third lesson; and Wei has巳, which is the fourth lesson. The upper gods are successively mounted on tian kong, gou chen, tai chang, and tian kong. The first and fourth lessons are repeated, so only three lessons are formed. Therefore, the method of "bie zhe" is used to establish the transmissions: the first transmission is the earth of Chou mounted on the vermilion bird, hidden dry branch Xin, which is "son and daughter," and Chou is also the sun of this month; the middle and final transmissions both take the dry branch on the god巳, mounted on tian kong, which is "companion."

The divination says: It will not snow tomorrow, and the sun will appear. The initial transmission (初传) is Chou, which is the month general (月将) of the sun. Above it is the Vermilion Bird (朱雀), which represents the essence of southern fire. Moreover, the three transmissions and four lessons are all yin spirits. When yin reaches its extreme, it transforms into yang, so the sun will definitely appear. On the day of Geng, at the hour of Wei, there will be a sudden strong wind, because You is the wind killer and Wei is the wind god, and You and Wei meet. Also, on the day of Ding, the禄神 (lucky spirit) of午 is riding on the White Tiger (白虎), which is placed on Shen (the position of Geng metal). The upper and lower elements mutually control and clash, hence this prediction comes true.

On Dingyou day, Guo Yuqing divined about children (Guo's Divination Case).

On a Dingyou day in a Renshen year, a divination was performed to determine the fortune of descendants. The example is taken from the "Guo's Divination Cases." The structure of the lesson is the same as the previous example: the Nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at亥 and on the Earth Plate at丑, the Teng Snake is on子 at寅, the Vermilion Bird is on丑 at卯, the Liu He is on寅 at辰, the Gou Chen is on卯 at巳, the Azure Dragon is on辰 at午, the Tian Kong is on巳 at未, the White Tiger is on午 at申, the Tai Chang is on未 at酉, the Black Tortoise is on申 at戌, and the Tai Yin is on酉 at亥, the Heavenly Empress is on戌 at子. The four lessons, read from right to left, are巳 added to丁 (丁's lodging palace is未),卯 added to巳,未 added to酉, and巳 added to未. The upper gods in sequence are Tian Kong, Gou Chen, Tai Chang, and Tian Kong. Although the four lessons are incomplete, the method of "bie zhe" is still used. The first transmission is丑 earth riding the Vermilion Bird, concealed dry branch is辛, which is "sons and daughters." The middle and final transmissions both use the dry branch巳 riding Tian Kong, which is "co-equal."

Guo Yuqing said: In the Renshen year, Li Wangchuan of Donglu replaced me in divining about my son. That year I lost a son, who had been born in the Jisi year. Li Wangchuan interpreted this divination, pointing out that the巳 fell into Kongwang, which exactly corresponded to the lost son. On the Heaven Plate, the Day Stem's Lodging Palace was located on the Wei, which was in the position of You on the Earth Plate. Earth and Metal mutually generated, and Wei concealed the Ding Stem, which in turn generated with the巳 fire and earth, forming a true image of father and son meeting. Therefore, the You year would surely bring a son. Later, I indeed had a son in the Guiyou year, in November. Li Wangchuan's interpretation was truly remarkable, so I recorded it here. Moreover, the name of the divination is "Bie Ze," which also implies abandoning the previous and placing hope on the later. Cheng Shuxun remarked: Both the Middle Transmission and the Final Transmission fell into Kongwang, indicating that the child would not live long. This point was not previously mentioned by predecessors, and I have tested it many times, so I specially recorded it here.

On a Dingyou day, a person born on Jiashen day seeks to gain wealth. (Case Records of Divination · Oral Insights)

In the year of Bingchen, fifth lunar month, eighteenth day, on the day of Dingyou, using the hour of Shen as the starting point, a person born in the year of Jiashen, thirty-three years old, seeks fortune. This example is taken from "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian." The branches on the Heaven Plate are one step ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The hour of Shen belongs to the daytime, and on a Ding day, the nobleman is located at Hai. The nobleman rides on the Heaven Plate at Hai and comes to the Earth Plate at Xu. Xu belongs to the yin side, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The nobleman rides on Hai and comes to Xu, the Heavenly Empress rides on Zi and comes to Hai, Tai Yin rides on Chou and comes to Zi, Xuanwu rides on Yin and comes to Chou, Tai Chang rides on Mao and comes to Yin, Baihu rides on Chen and comes to Mao, Tiankong rides on Si and comes to Chen, Qinglong rides on Wu and comes to Si, Gouchen rides on Wei and comes to Wu, Liuhe rides on Shen and comes to Wei, Zhuque rides on You and comes to Shen, and Tengshe rides on Xu and comes to You. The heavenly generals noted in the four lessons and three transmissions are exactly this sequence. Although the order of the heavenly generals on the plate diagram is reversed, the four lessons and three transmissions and the interpretation should be taken as the standard. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: Ding is located in the lodging palace of Wei, and Wei has Shen, which is the first lesson; Shen has You, which is the second lesson; the day branch You has Xu, which is the third lesson; and Xu has Hai, which is the fourth lesson. The heavenly generals in sequence are Liuhe, Zhuque, Tengshe, and Nobleman. The three transmissions are Hai, Zi, and Chou in order, which is called "Jin Ru." The first transmission is Hai water riding the Nobleman, with the hidden dry branch Ji, which is "official ghost" because it overcomes Ding. The second transmission is Zi water riding the Heavenly Empress, with the hidden dry branch Geng, which is also "official ghost." The third transmission is Chou earth riding Tai Yin, with the hidden dry branch Xin, which is "son and daughter," and Chou is also the tomb and storage of the wealth god Shen metal.

Shao Yanhe said: Three transmissions of Hai, Zi, and Chou are called "Jin Lian Ru" (progressive connection). The three transmissions are also all considered official ghosts. Fortunately, the day stem's heavenly stem is a wealth hexagram, and the day branch forms the six harms. The metal of Shen, located on the day stem, is placed on Ding and is accompanied by "Liu He" (six harmony). On the day branch You, the Xu is accompanied by "Teng Snake." "Liu He" belongs to Mao in the earthly branches, and "Teng Snake" belongs to Si in the earthly branches. Mao and Xu are in harmony, and Si and Shen are in harmony. The final transmission, Chou, is also the storage of the wealth hexagram Shen. Therefore, although the three transmissions are ghosts, they only cause slight obstruction and do not affect the overall situation. This is an old matter of mutual contact that requires repeated efforts to obtain. His native hexagram Shen and his year hexagram Xu are both within the transmission structure. The native hexagram Shen is also the wealth hexagram, which is certainly a good omen rather than a ghost omen.

On Dingyou day, Jiang Wenlao divined the family dwelling (Case File: Oral Insights).

In the year of Wushen, seventh month fifteenth day, Dingyou, using the hour of Wu as the starting point for the divination, Jiang Wenlao divined for his family residence. This example is taken from "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian." The branches on the Heaven Plate are two positions ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The hour of Chen belongs to the day time, and on a Ding day, the nobleman (guiping) is located at Hai. The nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at Hai and comes down to the Earth Plate at You. You belongs to the yin direction, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order: the nobleman is on Hai and comes down to You, the Teng Snake is on Xu and comes down to Shen, the Vermilion Bird is on You and comes down to Wei, the Liu He is on Shen and comes down to Wu, the Gou Chen is on Wei and comes down to Si, the Azure Dragon is on Wu and comes down to Chen, the Tian Kong is on Si and comes down to Mao, the White Tiger is on Chen and comes down to Yin, the Tai Chang is on Mao and comes down to Chou, the Black Tortoise is on Yin and comes down to Zi, the Tai Yin is on Chou and comes down to Hai, and the Heavenly Empress is on Zi and comes down to Xu. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the fire branch Ding is located in Wei, and Wei has You, which is the first lesson; You has Hai, which is the second lesson; the day branch You has Hai, which is the third lesson; Hai has Chou, which is the fourth lesson. The upper deities in sequence are the Vermilion Bird, the nobleman, the nobleman, and the Tai Yin. The three transmissions are You, Hai, and Chou: the first transmission is You metal with the Vermilion Bird, hidden dry branch Ding, which is "wife's wealth"; the middle transmission is Hai water with the nobleman, hidden dry branch Ji, which overcomes Ding fire as "official ghost"; the final transmission is Chou earth with the Tai Yin, hidden dry branch Xin, which is "son and daughter."

Shao Yanhe said: The gods you worship at home are not proper deities, but evil spirits, belonging to the category of the single-legged "Wutong." It is opposite to the proper deities; the single-legged itself will cause calamity. It has already disturbed the young women in your family, ruined a jar of fermented soy paste, and even had a snake enter your house. At that time, the Jiang family indeed worshipped a statue of a Wutong deity, which had broken off one of its legs, leaving only one foot.

Because the Earthly Branch You is associated with the five senses in the category of divine spirits, the character Ding has only one foot. The Vermilion Bird is paired with the Earthly Branch Wu. In the seventh month, Wu is used as the general, and under Wu, You appears. You govern sauce. The spirit Ding governs strange occurrences and destruction of objects. In the divination, You and Chou meet, triggering Si, which is located at the entrance and door, thus indicating a snake entering the house. You belongs to the Eight Trigrams as Dui, which represents a young girl, so it signifies disturbance of young girls. Ding takes You as its wife, and since Ding has only one foot, it indicates that the wife will give birth to a child with one foot.

On Dingyou day, Tong Xiaocai divined about an official dispute (from Fang Ben's Divination Cases · Oral Insights).

A man named Tong Xiaocai, born in the year Renxu, aged forty-seven, divined about legal matters and received this same lesson. This example is taken from "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian." The lesson format is the same as the previous example: the Nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at亥 and on the Earth Plate at酉, the Teng Snake is on the Heaven Plate at戌 and on the Earth Plate at申, the Vermilion Bird is on the Heaven Plate at酉 and on the Earth Plate at未, the Liu He is on the Heaven Plate at申 and on the Earth Plate at午, the Gou Chen is on the Heaven Plate at未 and on the Earth Plate at巳, the Azure Dragon is on the Heaven Plate at午 and on the Earth Plate at辰, the Tian Kong is on the Heaven Plate at巳 and on the Earth Plate at卯, the White Tiger is on the Heaven Plate at辰 and on the Earth Plate at寅, the Tai Chang is on the Heaven Plate at卯 and on the Earth Plate at丑, the Tai Yin is on the Heaven Plate at丑 and on the Earth Plate at亥, the Heavenly Empress is on the Heaven Plate at子 and on the Earth Plate at戌. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are酉 added to丁 (丁's lodging palace is未),亥 added to酉,亥 added to酉, and丑 added to亥. The upper gods are successively riding the Vermilion Bird, Nobleman, Nobleman, and Tai Yin. The three transmissions are酉,亥, and丑: the first transmission is酉 metal riding the Vermilion Bird, with the hidden dry branch 丁, representing "wife's wealth"; the middle transmission is亥 water riding the Nobleman, with the hidden dry branch 己, representing "official ghost"; the final transmission is丑 earth riding the Tai Yin, with the hidden dry branch 辛, representing "son and daughter."

Shao Yanhe said: The nobleman appears at night during the day and during the day at night, which is called "the nobleman losing his position," and it is not suitable to initiate litigation, for the case will certainly be decided unclearly. Now the nobleman is confused, indicating the use of money to bribe and secretly communicate with the nobleman. The Vermilion Bird is on You, resulting in a futile attempt at bribery, and it is certain that the case will have to be transferred to another office. The year stem is in Yin, and Yin is also the parent's trigram of today, indicating that the officials and superiors have become ghosts - because Yin should not be reversed to the ghost's territory. The case is decided unclearly due to the final transmission being Tai Yin. Later, his family will certainly bury an old woman in that land, because the Tai Yin is on Chou, which is the storage. The Tong family has a house that needs to be sold along with the land and mountains. His elder brother was supposed to redeem the property, but the younger brother raised the price, so they filed a lawsuit. The buyer was the aunt of Tong Xiucai. From the year Wushen to Xinhai, in June the aunt died, and indeed the family took the aunt and buried her there, and the property could not be redeemed.

On Dingyou day, divination for matters (Treatise on the Spiritual Meaning of Divination)

On the day of Dingyou in the fifth month, using the hour of午 (horse) and starting the divination with the time of辰 (dragon), the question is about the purpose of the person who has come. This example is taken from the "Zhi Gui Ling Wen Lun." The structure of the divination is the same as the previous two examples: the Nobleman is on the Heaven Plate at亥 (pig) and on the Earth Plate at酉 (rooster); the Teng Snake is on the Heaven Plate at戌 (dog) and on the Earth Plate at申 (monkey); the Vermilion Bird is on the Heaven Plate at酉 (rooster) and on the Earth Plate at未 (sheep); the Liu He is on the Heaven Plate at申 (monkey) and on the Earth Plate at午 (horse); the Gou Chen is on the Heaven Plate at未 (sheep) and on the Earth Plate at巳 (snake); the Azure Dragon is on the Heaven Plate at午 (horse) and on the Earth Plate at辰 (tiger); the Tian Kong is on the Heaven Plate at巳 (snake) and on the Earth Plate at卯 (rabbit); the White Tiger is on the Heaven Plate at辰 (tiger) and on the Earth Plate at寅 (ox); the Tai Chang is on the Heaven Plate at卯 (rabbit) and on the Earth Plate at丑 (ox); the Tai Yin is on the Heaven Plate at寅 (ox) and on the Earth Plate at子 (rat); the Heavenly Empress is on the Heaven Plate at子 (rat) and on the Earth Plate at戌 (dog). The four lessons, from right to left, are酉 (rooster) added to丁 (jia),亥 (pig) added to酉 (rooster),亥 (pig) added to酉 (rooster), and丑 (ox) added to亥 (pig). The upper gods in sequence are the Vermilion Bird, the Nobleman, the Nobleman, and the Tai Yin. The three transmissions are酉 (rooster),亥 (pig), and丑 (ox): the first transmission is酉 (rooster) metal with the Vermilion Bird, representing 'wife's wealth'; the middle transmission is亥 (pig) water with the Nobleman, representing 'official ghost'; the final transmission is丑 (ox) earth with the Tai Yin, representing 'son and daughter'. Taking the Nobleman's position as the boundary, the first transmission酉 (rooster) is before the Nobleman, and the final transmission丑 (ox) is after the Nobleman.

The interpretation says: if the first transmission comes before the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman, and the final transmission comes after the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman, this is called "Transmission of Yang entering Yin," which indicates that there will certainly be a servant bringing a letter in the morning or evening. Why? The hour of You is associated with servants before the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman, and with servants' attendants after the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman (Cheng Shuxun notes: this view is not found in any other school). Now, the hour of You is before the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman and is combined with the Vermilion Bird, the deity in charge of documents, hence the result. When the Heavenly Stem Yi Nobleman falls in the hour of You, it indicates instability in the household; combined with the Transmission of Yang entering Yin, it indicates that letters from outside will arrive immediately.

On Dingyou day, Guo Yanhe divined about the stepson.

In the year Ji You, tenth month, twenty-second day, Ding You, using the寅 (Yin) general added to the Zi (Zi) hour to cast the divination, Guo Yanhe, born in the year Ren Wu, aged twenty-eight, consulted about adopting a son. The branches on the Heaven Plate are two positions ahead of those on the Earth Plate. The Zi hour belongs to night, and the nobleman (guì rén) of the Ding day is in You. The nobleman rides on the Heaven Plate You and comes to the Earth Plate Wei, which belongs to the Yin direction. The Heavenly Generals are arranged in reverse order: the nobleman rides on You and comes to Wei, the Heavenly Empress rides on Xu and comes to Shen, Tai Yin rides on Hai and comes to You, Xuan Wu rides on Zi and comes to Xu, Tai Chang rides on Chou and comes to Hai, Bai Hu rides on Yin and comes to Zi, Tian Kong rides on Mao and comes to Chou, Qing Long rides on Chen and comes to Yin, Gou Chen rides on Si and comes to Mao, Liu He rides on Wu and comes to Chen, Zhu Què rides on Wei and comes to Si, and Teng Snake rides on Shen and comes to Wu. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: Ding is lodged in Wei, with You on Wei, which is the first lesson; You has Hai on it, which is the second lesson; the day branch You has Hai on it, which is the third lesson; Hai has Chou on it, which is the fourth lesson. The upper gods in sequence ride the nobleman, Tai Yin, Tai Yin, and Tai Chang. (The Heavenly General at the first lesson in the original text is written as 'Dragon', which does not match the diagram, the three transmissions, and the interpretation that 'You is the nobleman'; it should be the nobleman instead.) The three transmissions are You, Hai, and Chou: the first transmission is You metal riding the nobleman, with the hidden dry branch Ding, which is 'wife's wealth'; the middle transmission is Hai water riding Tai Yin, with the hidden dry branch Ji, which overcomes Ding fire as 'official ghost'; the final transmission is Chou earth riding Tai Chang, with the hidden dry branch Xin, which is 'son'.

Shao Yanhe said: The three transmissions and the day stem and day branch are all occupied by noblemen, so this adopted son is likely to become unruly in the future and secretly think of returning to his original family. On You, there is a nobleman riding on it, and there is also a Ding spirit hidden within, which will eventually take the initiative. The spirit on the day branch's residence also serves as the middle transmission. The Ding fire is extinct at Hai, but only manages to stand firm at Chou. It seems that the main mother of the family is unwilling to take care of him, and only an old woman is taking care of him. When this old woman dies, he will certainly leave. However, this child will not become prominent. Your elder brother will naturally have a biological son at the age of thirty-two. The noblemen in the three transmissions are too many, and being too noble is not really noble, so both ends will be empty.

The son comes to the father and becomes the nobleman, and when the day branch is directed towards the day stem, it also becomes the nobleman. This shows that this son should not be kept. The heavenly stem Ding takes You as its wife; the wife will later give birth to a son, so he does not need to be taken care of, and thus he leaves. You is the wife of Ding, Hai is the son born from You, and Hai is placed above You, so it is said that the wife will have a son. When the year stem reaches You at the age of thirty-two, it is the time when this happens.

However, the house has a shrine for the heavenly deities, which should not be defiled or disturbed, hence the lack of a son. Moreover, constructing a pigpen on the main mountain is disrespectful to the main energy, so a son could not be obtained. Later examination confirmed that the mountain in the direction of Qian and Hai was too close and conflicting, directly facing the right side below, which indicates a woman's miscarriage, hence no son.

Because there is a nobleman in the酉 position: first, the day branch approaches the day stem, indicating the son will be prominent and the parents will be honored; second, all over the chart there are noblemen, but now the亥 represents heaven, which is being defiled; third, the ghost enters the house, meaning the mountain ridge should not have a pigpen with filth, which is exactly the Tai Yin acting as a ghost. The丑 is a storage place, added on top of the亥 and also on top of the day stem. The丑 is originally the son trigram of the丁, belonging to earth and conflicting with the亥 water, so it is unfavorable for the tomb. As long as the pigpen is moved away and the heavenly deity is properly worshipped, there will naturally be a son. Later, it turned out exactly as predicted.
