On Dingsi day, someone divined about an illness (the original divination case).

On the Dingsi day in the fifth month, using the month general "Wei" of the fifth month, add it to the time of Yin to set up the Heaven Plate. A person comes to inquire about illness. Here, "Wei" refers to the month general Xiaoji Wei, indicating the palace where the sun is located in that month, while "Yin time" is the actual time for casting the divination. Together, they determine the position of the Heaven Plate. This case is recorded in "Fang Ben Zhan An."

The distribution of the Twelve Heavenly Generals on the Heaven Plate is: Teng Snake occupies Xu, Vermilion Bird occupies Hai, Liu He occupies Zi, Gou Chen occupies Chou, Azure Dragon occupies Yin, Tian Kong occupies Mao, White Tiger occupies Chen, Tai Chang occupies Si, Black Tortoise occupies Wu, Tai Yin occupies Wei, Heavenly Empress occupies Shen, and Nobleman occupies You. In the lesson format, the abbreviations are used as follows: "Zhu" refers to Vermilion Bird, "Liu" refers to Liu He, "She" refers to Teng Snake, "Chen" refers to Gou Chen, and "Gui" refers to Nobleman. In this lesson, they are located on the branches Hai, Zi, Xu, Chou, and You respectively. The general usage of other abbreviations is: "Chang" refers to Tai Chang, "Hou" refers to Heavenly Empress, "Xuan" refers to Black Tortoise, "Kong" refers to Tian Kong, "Yin" refers to Tai Yin, "Hu" refers to White Tiger, and "Long" refers to Azure Dragon. The four lessons are counted from right to left: the day stem Ding is in the lodging palace Wei, with Zi occupying Wei and Liu He on Zi, which is the first lesson; Si occupying Zi and Tai Chang on Si, which is the second lesson; the day branch Si has Xu occupying Si and Teng Snake on Xu, which is the third lesson; and Mao occupying Xu and Tian Kong on Mao, which is the fourth lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Si with Tai Chang, and the ten-day cycle reveals Ding Si, which corresponds to the brother in the fire element; the middle transmission is Xu with Teng Snake, and the ten-day cycle reveals Ren Xu, which corresponds to the son; the final transmission is Mao with Tian Kong, and the ten-day cycle reveals Yi Mao, which corresponds to the father.

Shao Yanhe said: This divination indicates that the patient will speak incoherently and die from shortness of breath. The first transmission is the巳 (Si) trigram riding on Tai Chang, which initiates the transmission. Tai Chang governs speech and sound, so the symptoms of the illness first manifest in the mouth and tongue. The day stem is Ding, which belongs to fire, and the initiating transmission is also Si, which belongs to fire. The middle transmission is Teng Snake riding on Xu and added to Si. Teng Snake is originally a fire deity, and Xu is the burial ground of fire. Now it is added to the position of Si, which is the peak of fire, equivalent to adding fire to fire, intensifying the fire energy and pushing it to its peak. Therefore, it indicates the patient will speak in a frenzied and confused manner. The burial ground of fire is Xu; when fire enters the burial ground, it signifies the complete withdrawal of yin energy. The human body relies on internal yin energy as its foundation, which gradually nurtures yang energy. Now that yin energy has been completely cut off, yang energy has nowhere to be restrained and can only surge upward, unable to return to generate yin energy. Since yin has been cut off and yang is weak, it further indicates the patient will have difficulty breathing. Later, the patient indeed spoke incoherently and died from shortness of breath.

On Dingsi day, Tu Songting divined for Peng Nanming's promotion (guidance).

In the Dingmao year of the Chongzheng era (i.e., Chongzhen), during the first lunar month, on the Dingsi day, the class was cast by placing the Month General 'Zi' on the Mao hour. Since the middle solar term of Rainwater had not yet begun, the Zi General and Shenhou (Zi) were still used as per the period after the Great Cold. General Tu Songting of the Beijing military camp divined for Peng Nanming regarding his promotion. This case is recorded in the "Six Rats Guide."

The Heavenly Generals on the Heaven Plate are: Teng Snake on Zi, Vermilion Bird on Chou, Liu He on Yin, Gou Chen on Mao, Azure Dragon on Chen, Tian Kong on Si, White Tiger on Wu, Tai Chang on Wei, Black Tortoise on Shen, Tai Yin on You, Heavenly Empress on Xu, and Nobleman on Hai. For a day stem of Dingsi, the Nobleman is in Hai during the day and in You at night. Since Mao hour belongs to the day, the day Nobleman is taken from Hai. The Nobleman is on the Earth Plate at Yin, which is a position of progression, and the other generals are arranged in sequence accordingly. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Dingsi is located at Wei, and at Wei there is Chen with Azure Dragon; at Chen there is Chou, which is marked as Tai Chang in the source text, conflicting with the Aligned General at Chou which is Vermilion Bird, suggesting a possible error in the text; at Si there is Yin with Liu He; at Yin there is Hai with Nobleman. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Hai with Nobleman, hidden stem Guihai, where Hai water overcomes Dingsi fire, representing official ghost for the day stem; the middle transmission is Shen with Black Tortoise, hidden stem Gengshen, representing wife wealth; the final transmission is Si with Tian Kong, hidden stem Dingsi, representing brother. In divination for promotion, the official star is most important, and in this case, the official ghost is at the initiating transmission, which is the key point.

Chen Gongxian said: The sovereign and the month builder both come to generate and support the day stem, indicating that promotion is certain at present, and the new post is mostly in a place surrounded by mountains and water. Because the day branch represents the place of appointment, and the branch has yin, yin belongs to the eight trigrams as gen, which means mountain; yin also combines with the water of hai, so mountain and water meet, thus the place should be like this. The pattern of this divination belongs to "hao shi", originally an arrow without a tip, but now encountering the metal energy, it is like the arrow has a tip, and the power becomes effective; in addition, the nobleman, heavenly virtue, and the post-horse all enter the three transmissions, the wife's wealth, official stars, and the deities governing cities and officials are all gathered, which are signs of rapid promotion and strong official promotion. The thing to be cautious about is that the yin and yang spirits of the day stem reverse to control the official star, so one should be careful of people surnamed Chen, Wang, and Tian who may interfere. Later, on the guihai day, Peng Nanming was immediately appointed as the commander of the Nanjing patrol camp; not long after, Tian Dashima dismissed him under the name of "tian zhu canjiang".

On Dingsi day, Tong Baoyi divined the dwelling (Oral Mirror, Fang Ben's divination case).

In the year Wushen of the Jianyan era, which was the second year of the Southern Song Emperor Gaozong's Jianyan reign, on the Dingsi day of the sixth month, the divination was cast with the Month General 'Wei' placed on the You hour. Since the summer solstice had not yet passed and the middle solar term of Gushu had not arrived, the Wei General was still used as per the period after the summer solstice. The diviner, Tong Baoyi, was born in the Dingsi year and was fifty-two years old that year. He came to inquire about the auspiciousness of his own residence. This case is recorded in both "Koujian" and "Fangben Zhan An."

The Heaven Plate generals are: Tian Kong on Mao, Bai Hu on Chen, Tai Chang on Si, Xuan Wu on Wu, Nobleman on You, Teng Snake on Xu, Zhu Que on Hai, Liu He on Zi, Gou Chen on Chou, and Qing Long on Yin. The characters marked for Wei and Shen are incorrect. Following the order of Nobleman's progression, they should be Tai Yin on Wei and Heavenly Empress on Shen. The hour of You is night, and for a Ding day, the night nobleman is on You, so the Nobleman is on You. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Ding is in Wei, and Wei has Si with Tai Chang; Si has Mao with Tian Kong; the day branch Si also has Mao with Tian Kong; Mao has Chou, where the source text marks Tai Yin, but this conflicts with the Gou Chen on Chou in the three transmissions, so it is left as is. The three transmissions are: first transmission Chou with Gou Chen - Ding Si day in Jiayin shen, Zi and Chou branches are empty in the shen, so only "empty Chou" is written without the hidden stem; Chou earth is the son of Ding fire; middle transmission Hai with Zhu Que, hidden stem Gui Hai, which is official ghost; final transmission You with Nobleman, hidden stem Xin You, which is wife wealth.

Shao Yanhe said: In this divination, there is a single yin spirit following one after another, with six positions connected in a row, and not a single yang spirit in between; it also coincides with the sixth month, when the Month Builder is in Wei. Wei month is inherently a yin month, and the day branch Dingsi also consists of Dingsi, both of which are yin. The yin energy has accumulated to such an extent that the family's fortune will henceforth decline and become weak. It also indicates that a servant girl will meet with an accident and die in the toilet. The two fire elements, Dingsi, each descend from their strongest position to the dead and exhausted place, indicating that there is a withered old tree in front of the house. If this tree is not cut down, miscellaneous disputes will keep coming. It also suggests that one son will suffer from a disease in the abdomen. It is even worse to convert the upper floor behind the house into a pigpen; the more vigorous the pigs are raised, the more they will harm the family members. According to this divination, the decline will begin in the fourth year and be completely ruined by the sixth year.

Tong Baoyi early in his life gained a position through military merit due to local bandit activities, then bought property and established a family, which became prosperous. However, when Zhao Master cast this divination for him, he predicted that he would fail within four years and be completely ruined by the sixth year. Tong did not believe it very much. That same year in October, a servant girl slipped and fell into the toilet, drowning in it. In front of the house stood a large maple tree that was two hundred years old, which had long been half-decayed. The tree was right over the ancestral graves of the family. Seeing this, he felt the divination was very precise. The yin spirit of the卯 (Mao) was supported by丑 (Chou), and Chou is the storage place for wood. This person, when casting the divination in the daytime, rode the Vermilion Bird, and at night rode Gou Chen. The Vermilion Bird governs speech and documents, while Gou Chen governs disputes and legal matters. Yet it was also the initiating transmission, so it was predicted that there would be continuous disturbances from miscellaneous matters. By the twelfth month, someone from outside the village hanged himself under the tree. His second son had long suffered from hernia. His family's house was spacious, and after the brothers divided the property and moved out, the empty house was left unoccupied, so they used the back wing to raise pigs. In the fourth year, they dismantled the houses on all four sides and sold them. By the sixth year, they indeed fell into complete ruin, with only five people left in the family, who moved to live in a shop on the street.

In general, the earthly branches Chou, Hai, You, and Mao are all considered extremely yin by Master Shao; on a Dingsi day, the three transmissions also follow the path of the yin's terminal position. If the house's position is Mao and the final transmission is You, counting from Mao to You is exactly six positions, so it is judged that the house will be ruined in six years. This divination concerns a house, so the spirit of the house is taken into account; You is also called "Guijimmen," which signifies conclusion and completion, so the decision is made based on the house's position and the final transmission. Adding these two positions separately to Si and Hai results in a calculation of four years. On a Dingsi day, it belongs to the Jiayin decade; within the decade, Yimao is true wood (some editions say that Mao added to Si is true wood), so there is a large tree in front of the gate; the spirit of Tian Kong signifies decay, so the tree is rotten. Chou represents a pavilion, and Hai added to Chou indicates that the rear pavilion is used for raising pigs. You added to Hai is the death deity of that day; You represents a servant girl, and Hai represents a toilet, so it indicates that a servant girl dies in the toilet. In summary, Chou represents a tomb, Mao represents a tree in front of the gate, and Hai represents a pavilion, each having a clear meaning.

On Dingsi day, divination about a candle in the wind (one strike, one insight).

On the fifth day of the second lunar month, which is the Dingsi day, the divination is started by placing the Month General "Hai" on the Zi hour. Since the vernal equinox has not yet occurred, the Hai General is still used as Dengming following the Rain Water solar term. The divination concerns wind and fire calamities. This case is from "One Needle Sees the Essence."

The Heaven Plate generals are: Azure Dragon rides the辰, Gou Chen rides the巳, Liu He rides the午, Vermilion Bird rides the未, Teng Snake rides the申, Nobleman rides the酉, Tian Kong rides the卯, White Tiger rides the寅, Tai Chang rides the丑, Black Tortoise rides the子, Tai Yin rides the亥, Heavenly Empress rides the戌. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem is Ding, which is located on未, and on未 there is午 riding Liu He; on午 there is巳 riding Gou Chen; the day branch is巳, which has辰 riding Azure Dragon; on辰 there is卯 riding Tian Kong. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is卯 riding Tian Kong, with the hidden stem Yi卯; the middle transmission is寅 riding White Tiger, with the hidden stem Jia寅; both transmissions belong to the fire element Ding, which is considered parents; the final transmission is丑 riding Tai Chang, on the day of Ding巳, which belongs to the Jia寅 decade, and since Zi and Chou are empty in this decade, a mark 「◎」 is placed on Chou to indicate it is empty; the earth element Chou is considered the son of the fire element Ding. The positions of卯,寅, and丑 move backward, forming the image of "retreating and consuming." The following text states that the new energy is not different from the old energy, which is exactly seen from here.

Zhu Bi submitted a report stating: The three transmissions are卯, 寅, and 丑, which follow the path of prosperity and decline, transferring the life qi that has already passed to the new incoming qi. Thus, the new incoming qi is the same as before. The numbers contained in this divination only extend up to the end of the third month of spring, and do not include the three months of summer. This means that the three transmissions retreat to the month builder Chen in the third month, and then return to the position of the sovereign. There are no earthly branches for the months after April in the divination. The initial transmission of the initiating transmission is the Tian Kong deity, which belongs to the tomb position, indicating that there will be no disturbances in the capital area. None of the three transmissions belong to fire, and neither the heavenly deities nor the earthly generals carry fire, indicating that there will be no wind or fire disasters. The only concern is the White Tiger occupying the position of the city gate. The White Tiger signifies disturbance, and today's day stem is Ding fire, which is born in寅. However, the White Tiger is exactly on寅, so there will be gradual disturbances, but they will not spread into a disaster, nor will they injure people. Moreover, this will only occur within this month. The losses will affect only one or two families.

On Dingsi day, a child with seven talents divined his future (from Oral Mirror, Fang Ben's divination case).

In the year Wushen, sixth month, on the day Dingsi, the course was cast with the Month General 'Wei' placed on the hour Wei. Since the Month General and the time of divination are in the same position, this is a course of 'Hidden Chant'. The person seeking divination is a young scholar named Tong Qixiu, born in the year Renshen, with a birth date of the fourteenth day of the ninth month at the hour Si. He is thirty-seven years old this year and is consulting about his future in officialdom. This case is recorded in both 'Koujian' and 'Fangben Zhan An'.

The heavenly generals on the heaven plate are: Tian Kong on Si, Bai Hu on Wu, Tai Chang on Wei, Xuan Wu on Shen, Tai Yin on You, Tian Hou on Xu, Gui Ren on Hai, Teng Snake on Zi, Zhu Que on Chou, Liu He on Yin, Gou Chen on Mao, and Qing Long on Chen. The unmarked hour is on Wei, so the heaven plate and earth plate completely coincide, with each of the twelve branches returning to its original position, hence called "Hidden Chant." The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Ding is in Wei, and Wei still has Wei with Tai Chang; Wei again has Wei with Tai Chang; the day branch Si has Si with Tian Kong; Si again has Si with Tian Kong—so the four lessons form only two groups, exactly the appearance of a Hidden Chant lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Si with Tian Kong, hidden stem Ding Si, representing brothers; the middle transmission is Shen with Xuan Wu, hidden stem Geng Shen, representing wife and wealth; the final transmission is Yin with Liu He, hidden stem Jiayin, representing parents. The Hidden Chant lesson itself remains still, relying entirely on punishment and clash to initiate the transmissions. Si clashes with Shen, and Shen clashes with Yin, thus the three transmissions are generated in sequence.

Shao Yanhe said: This lesson indicates that the person will have a child at seven, and will pass the local examination next year, obtaining the qualification to take the provincial examination. However, he will not pass the metropolitan examination. It also indicates that his wife will be bewitched by a monkey. Four years later, he will move to live with his wife's family, because his wife's only son has died, and the two families will live together as one. Afterwards, he will still have success in the imperial examinations, and after being appointed as a county official, when his term is about to end, his wife will die. Then he will be appointed to an official position in charge of finance and revenue, but he will die within seven months of taking office, dying in the hands of a servant, without seeing his son by his side. While the family is mourning, the son's good news will arrive.

Tong Qi indeed passed the examination in the second year and then went to the provincial capital to take the exam. His home was near the mountain, and his wife was bewitched by monkeys, singing and laughing all day without stopping. A neighbor remembered that Master Shao had said something about this, and followed his advice to treat her, and her illness was cured. Four years later, he moved to live with his wife's family for seven years. The wife's parents had only one son, who had died, so the in-laws lived together with the Tong family. In the Wuchen examination, Tong Qi passed and was appointed as the official of Nan'an County. When his term ended, his wife Ye Shi died. He was then appointed as the official of Lin'an's dock office, and when he took up his post, only seven months had passed. His two sons returned to their hometown to take the autumn examination. At that time, Tong Qi died, and only five or six servants were left to arrange his funeral. When his sons returned to escort his coffin and hold the mourning ceremony, the second son just happened to pass the local examination in seventh place, obtaining a recommendation for further examination.

The principle of deduction is: the丁 fire takes the寅 in the final transmission as the "school," and the寅 in the final transmission is supported by the卯 in the current year's age branch. Therefore, he passed the examination the next year. Looking at the day stem, it is乘 by Tai Chang, which signifies official position and clothing and food; the initial transmission is巳, which is the official position of丁 fire, and it is乘 by Tian Kong, which signifies empty fame. Together, this indicates the qualification to be admitted. The middle transmission is申, which is the wife's house, withBlack Tortoise on top, and also combined with the strange and strange killing. Since申 belongs to the monkey andBlack Tortoise represents thieves and spirits, it indicates the wife being fascinated by monkeys. As for the reason of returning to the wife's house: the day stem is only丁, but there are two丁 in the巳 position - one on the day branch and one in the initial transmission - both丁 fires are born in寅. The house belongs to the wife, so it indicates moving into the wife's house;丁 is also born in寅, so both houses are combined. Passing the examination and being admitted also occur in the final transmission's寅. The reason for not seeing a son at the time of death is that there is no son's element among the three transmissions.

On Dingsi day, Zhang Jiang village divined about the pavilion (agreement).

In the year Jiayin of the Qianlong era, on the first day of the fourth lunar month, which fell on the day Dingsi, the divination was cast using the Month General 'You' placed on the Shen hour. Since the middle solar term Xiaoman had not yet begun, the 'You' general was still used as the Month General following the start of Lixia. The question was about entering a private office, meaning whether one could serve as a counselor in someone's household and secure a place to reside. This case is from the text "Shuyue."

The Heaven Plate generals are: Azure Dragon rides the horse (午), Gou Chen rides the goat (未), Liu He rides the monkey (申), Vermilion Bird rides the rooster (酉), Teng Snake rides the dog (戌), Nobleman rides the pig (亥), Heavenly Empress rides the rat (子), Tai Yin rides the ox (丑), Black Tortoise rides the tiger (寅), Tai Chang rides the rabbit (卯), White Tiger rides the dragon (辰), Tian Kong rides the snake (巳). The hour of Shen belongs to the day, and on a Ding day, the daytime nobleman is at Hai, so the nobleman is at Hai. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Ding is in the lodging palace of Wei, and on Wei there is Shen riding Liu He; on Shen there is You riding Vermilion Bird; on the day branch Si there is Wu riding Azure Dragon; on Wu there is Wei riding Gou Chen. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Shen riding Liu He, with the hidden stem Geng Shen; the middle transmission is You riding Vermilion Bird, with the hidden stem Xin You; Shen metal and You metal are both wife wealth for Ding fire; the final transmission is Xu riding Teng Snake, with the hidden stem Ren Xu, which represents descendants. Shen, You, and Xu proceed in order, indicating a progressive development, suggesting that matters will move forward step by step.

Zhang Jiangcun said: The divination was originally about one matter, but the course of the divination revealed another matter; sometimes it was for someone else, yet it involved the person himself. Such situations often occur in the壬课 system, and the changes are so extreme that only those with sharp insight can perceive them. I divined for myself on the day of Dingsi, the fourth day of the fourth lunar month in the Jiayin year, at the hour of Shen, using You as the month general. The three transmissions were Shen, You, and Xu. Shen is the god of roads, indicating travel or movement; You is the month general of that month, and also the place of birth for Ding fire, with the Vermilion Bird above it. The Vermilion Bird governs documents and recommendations, so I concluded that someone of influence would recommend me on the way. You also connects with the nobleman at Hai, indicating that the recommendation would be accepted. This is referring to the original matter. If we look at it another way: Shen is also the wife's palace, with六合 and internal conflict, indicating the wife would fall ill; Shen's ten-day cycle shows庚, with庚 metal on top of申 metal, indicating a heavy metal situation, suggesting an illness in the abdomen; fortunately, the hidden god is Tai Yin, which governs softness and protection, so the illness would not endanger her life. Later, in the seventh and eighth lunar months, the wife indeed fell seriously ill, first with malaria, then turning into dysentery, almost leading to her death.

Later, his wife became seriously ill, and he divined whether she would live or die. The divination was cast on the day of Renzi (July 27th) at the You hour, using the Wu animal as the starting point. The three transmissions were Wu, Mao, and Zi. Wu represents the wife's position, with the Heavenly Empress riding on top, and there was a conflict with an external deity. Fortunately, Wu is the Sun, and the yang energy was sufficient to protect, so although her illness was severe, there was no serious danger—this refers to the specific case being divined. Looking at it another way: the day stem represents myself. Shen is the long life of Ren water, and it is directly above the day stem, indicating that someone will recommend me. The nobleman is located at Si, which is in the position that combines with Shen, showing that I will also have a position. Soon after, on the day of Guihai (August 9th), indeed, Shen Xiangkui recommended me, and Xiong Niantai sent people to invite me. These are examples of the divination for this matter revealing other events within the same chart.

On Dingsi day, someone consulted about their entire life (from the Secret Manual of Blue Coins).

In the Xuanhe Xinchou year, which is the third year of Emperor Huizong of Song's Xuanhe era, on the Dingsi day of the twelfth month, the class was cast by placing the Month General 'Zi' on the Shen hour. The person consulting the divination was born in the Xinchou year and was twenty-five years old that year, asking about the fortune and misfortune of his whole life. This case is from the book "Qingqian Miaoji."

The Heaven Plate generals are: Vermilion Bird occupies You, Teng Snake occupies Xu, Nobleman occupies Hai, Heavenly Empress occupies Zi, Tai Yin occupies Chou, Black Tortoise occupies Yin, Tai Chang occupies Mao, White Tiger occupies Chen, Tian Kong occupies Si, Azure Dragon occupies Wu, Gou Chen occupies Wei, and Liu He occupies Shen. The hour of Shen belongs to the day, and on a Ding day, the daytime nobleman is at Hai, so the Nobleman is at Hai. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Ding is in Wei, and at Wei, Hai is occupied by the Nobleman; at Hai, Mao is occupied by Tai Chang; the day branch Si has You at it, occupied by Vermilion Bird; and at You, Chou is occupied by Tai Yin. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You, occupied by Vermilion Bird, with the hidden stem Xinyou, representing wife and wealth; the middle transmission is Chou, occupied by Tai Yin, and on a Ding Si day, which belongs to the Jiayin cycle, Zi and Chou are in the empty position of the cycle, so a mark 「◎」 is placed to indicate it is empty, and Chou earth represents children; the final transmission is Si, occupied by Tian Kong, with the hidden stem Dingsi, representing brothers. You, Chou, and Si form the triple harmony of Si-You-Chou, which is a metal triad, but this metal triad falls on the empty position and the broken position, which explains why in the following text, it is concluded that the family's wealth and property will ultimately belong to others.

Shao Yanhe said: On a day with the stem Ding, the nobleman is stationed on亥. The water of亥 is the official ghost of the fire of Ding, so this person must never be close to the nobleman, for eventually he will be harmed by the nobleman. Moreover, the fire of Ding is at its decline in亥. The day branch represents the house, and the house is afflicted by the killing power of 'broken pieces', and also acts as a阴 nobleman riding the Vermilion Bird. Both the fire of Ding and the fire of巳 take the metal of酉 as their wife's wealth. Since the wealth position is accompanied by broken pieces and is under the authority of the阴 nobleman, it is most dangerous to have dealings with the nobleman regarding money. In the future, the property and assets will all belong to others, and the harm will come from women. The middle transmission,丑, is Tai Yin added to酉, and丑 is also at the empty position of the term. This clearly indicates that the family property will be completely lost, and there is an old widow in the family who is a widow, and all the fields will be lost. The final transmission,巳, is the house god, stationed below the empty position of丑. How can the fields and houses be preserved? It is feared that he will not live past thirty. Later, all these events came true, and none of the predictions missed.

Someone asked him why his predictions were so accurate. Master Shao replied: I cast the divination for this person on the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month in the third year of Xuanhe. Since the beginning of spring had already occurred on the 21st day of the twelfth lunar month of that year, I used the cycle of the year Renyin to make the prediction. The person was twenty-five years old, and his current year was in the branch of Yin. Yin had the branch of Wu, which was the禄神 of the day stem. Also, both the stem and branch were in a prosperous and strong position, so at that time he was safe and untroubled. However, in the year he turned twenty-eight, he was completely stripped of his property and land by Xu Canyi of the local area. That year his current year was in the branch of Si. Si had the branch of You, which carried the destructive power of the killer, and the Vermilion Bird governs documents, so it was clear that a secret nobleman used a piece of written evidence to take away all his property. At the age of thirty, he died, which was the first year of Jingkang, the year Bingwu. As for predicting that his mother would become a widow, his house would fall into disrepair, and he would have to sell it soon, how did I come to that conclusion? The day stem was Ding, which saw the branch of Hai. Hai was the绝气 of the stem and branch. The day branch was Si, which saw the branch of You. You was the death deity of the stem and branch, so it indicated that his lifespan was short. Moreover, at the age of thirty, his current year was in the branch of Wei. Wei had the branch of Hai water. Both his stem and current year fell into the绝 position, so he was destined to die. In general, when predicting the lifespan of a person, if the divination does not show death, tomb, or绝, one should not lightly predict death. Once these positions appear, and the current year is exactly on these positions, very few people can escape their fate.

On the day of Dingsi, Huang Xiucai divined the fate of a person born on Gengwu. (Oral Mirror, Fang's Case Book)

In the year of Wushen, second month, on the day of Dingsi, the class of the month was set as Hai, placed on the hour of Wei. Huang Xiucai cast a divination for a person born in the year of Gengwu who was asking when a traveler away from home would return. This case is recorded in both "Koujian" and "Fangben Zhan'an."

This case has the same structure as the previous one: the hour of Wei is added to the hour of Hai, and the hour of Shen is added to the hour of Zi, with the same number of positions moved in the Heaven Plate. Therefore, the Heaven Plate, Four Lessons, and Three Transmissions are identical. The generals are: Vermilion Bird on You, Teng Snake on Xu, Nobleman on Hai, Heavenly Empress on Zi, Tai Yin on Chou, Black Tortoise on Yin, Tai Chang on Mao, White Tiger on Chen, Tian Kong on Si, Azure Dragon on Wu, Gou Chen on Wei, and Liu He on Shen. The hour of Wei is still during the day, so the daytime nobleman for the day stem Ding is still Hai. The Four Lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Ding is located on Wei, and Wei has Hai with the Nobleman; Hai has Mao with Tai Chang; the day branch Si is on You, and You has You with Vermilion Bird; You has Chou with Tai Yin. The Three Transmissions are: the first transmission is You with Vermilion Bird, hidden stem Xinyou, representing wife and wealth; the middle transmission is Chou with Tai Yin, which is empty for the current ten days and marked as '◎', representing son and daughter; the final transmission is Si with Tian Kong, hidden stem Dingsi, representing brother and sister. In divination about a person traveling, the emphasis is on the day stem and the person's birth year. In this case, the Nobleman, which is water, is added to the day stem, forming the foundation for the following discussion.

Shao Yanhe said: In this case, the nobleman is on the亥 position and is added to the day stem Ding. The亥 water is exactly the absolute god of the Ding fire; the亥 water also comes to overcome the day stem, which according to the usual rule indicates that a traveler is coming. Unfortunately, the matters he is handling outside have not yet been completed; in addition, the wealth爻 of the house is represented by documents and is riding on the broken killing, indicating that the document procedures are not yet complete, and there is a meaning of change in the middle. The traveler's year is on the辰, and on the辰 there is the申. The亥 water also has its growth in the申. The absolute god carries the life qi, so he cannot return at present and will not arrive home until the子 day of the third month.

The divination was about a friend traveling to the Jiangnan region to handle affairs. The traveler was born in the year Gengwu. The hour of Wu was placed on the stem of Yin, and Yin is the place where Wu fire is born, meaning the traveler carries life qi with him, his movements are unpredictable, and he is heading northeast. The hour of Hai is the place of death, and it is located on the day stem, which also attacks the day stem. Therefore, the traveler is destined to return. However, the year stem shows Shen, which in turn generates Hai water, so the life qi has not yet been exhausted, and thus he has not returned yet. Moreover, the first transmission started from the house and returned to the day branch, which fell in the northeast as the final transmission. The house spirit has moved to the northeast, which is another reason for not returning. The water on the day stem is in the disease place in the northeast, and the day branch has gone to the place of death, so the person is detained there. This is the third reason for not returning. Later, the traveler indeed returned home on the ninth day of the third lunar month, which was the day Wuzi.

The method of calculating the time of an event in divination is the same regardless of the subject. It involves examining how the Triple Harmony aligns with the year of movement. The position of亥 is occupied by the Nobleman, but it is also the place where the fire of丁 reaches its decline. When亥 is placed on未, 未 is the Lodging Palace of丁, so placing亥 on未 is equivalent to placing it on the day stem丁. This decline god comes to attack me. Normally, if something attacks the day stem, it indicates that the person will return to me. However, the matter he is handling is not yet completed. Here, the day stem丁 represents me, and the day branch巳 represents the other party, or someone else. The matter in question is someone else's affair. The巳 is located on丑, which is a fallen position, indicating that the matter will not be completed. Additionally, the house is occupied by酉, which is associated with the Vermilion Bird, indicating a document or written matter. In the early part of the month,酉 carries the destructive force of fragmentation, showing that the documents are incomplete. Furthermore,酉 is attacked by卯, the hidden yin god of the day stem, indicating further changes. The year of movement is on辰, and on辰 there is申, which generates亥 water. The decline god has now turned into life energy, so the person will not return at present. Since申 and辰 form a half harmony, only one more element, 子, is needed to complete the Triple Harmony. Therefore, it is concluded that the person will return on the day of子 in the month of辰. Further, taking申 as the year ruler, it indicates that the event will occur when the Triple Harmony is fully aligned within a year.

Wuwu day

On Wuwu day, King Mu Fu shot a hidden object (a game of guessing an object based on hints). (Mu Fu's Divination Verification)

On the day of Wuwu in the month of You of the year Jiaxu, the divination was started at the hour of Si (according to the source, it is called "taking the Si hour by force," meaning the diviner determines the hour on the spot). This case is about a game called "shooting the cover," where the object hidden under a cover is guessed. For the month of You, the Month General is Tiangang (Chen). The general Chen is placed over the hour Si, and the following lesson is arranged. This case is from "The Farmer's Divination Verification."

The Heaven Plate generals are: Liu He on Chen, Gou Chen on Si, Azure Dragon on Wu, Tian Kong on Wei, White Tiger on Shen, Tai Chang on You, Black Tortoise on Xu, Tai Yin on Hai, Heavenly Empress on Zi, Nobleman on Chou, Teng Snake on Yin, and Vermilion Bird on Mao. The time of Si belongs to the day, and on Wu day the daytime nobleman is on Chou, so the nobleman is on Chou. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Wu is in the lodging palace on Si, with Chen on Si and Liu He; Chen on Si with Si and Gou Chen; the day branch Wu has Si on Wu and Gou Chen; and Si on Wu with Chen and Liu He. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Mao with Vermilion Bird and the hidden stem Yi Mao; the middle transmission is Yin with Teng Snake and the hidden stem Jiayin; the wood of Mao and Yin both overcome the earth of Wu, and are both official ghosts; the final transmission is Chou with Nobleman, and on Wu Wu day, which belongs to the Jiayin decade, the Zi Chou decade is empty, so it is marked as 「◎」, and the earth of Chou is a brother. In determining the covered object, the entire process is based on the shape of this continuous chain.

Wang Mufu said: On a yang day, when performing the covering divination, one should first look at the day stem. If the stem is connected to Chen, Chen is called Tiangang, symbolizing something hard and strong; above it is Liu He, which has the shape of something that can be opened or closed, and Liu He also represents the hand. Then looking at the first transmission, the卯 (Mao) is riding on the Vermilion Bird. Mao, Yin, and Chou are connected in sequence to form Ru, which is an image of a long and entirely hard metal object. In the three transmissions, there is again Yin, which belongs to the Gen trigram, representing stop, implying the ability to close and stop. When examined, it turned out to be a folding knife used for cutting ropes.

On Wuwu day, a proclamation was made regarding the decision to either hold or attack Taizhou. (Direct and to the point)

On the 9th day of the tenth lunar month, the divination was cast with the Month General 'Mao' placed on the Mao hour. Since the General and the hour are in the same position, it is a Hidden Chant lesson. The emperor issued an edict to consult on whether to defend or attack the matter concerning Taizhou. The original text refers to the day as 'Ten Thousand Days,' which is an error. According to the Day Stem 'Wu' and the Day Branch 'Wu' in the lesson, it should be Wuwu day. This case is from 'One Needle Sees the Essence.'

The Heaven Plate generals are: Gou Chen on Si, Azure Dragon on Wu, Tian Kong on Wei, White Tiger on Shen, Tai Chang on You, Black Tortoise on Xu, Tai Yin on Hai, Heavenly Empress on Zi, Nobleman on Chou, Teng Snake on Yin, Vermilion Bird on Mao, and Liu He on Chen. When Mao general is placed on Mao time, each of the twelve branches returns to its original position, so it is called "Hidden Chant." The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the day stem Wu is placed on Si, and Si still has Si with Gou Chen; Si again has Si with Gou Chen; the day branch Wu has Wu with Azure Dragon; Wu still has Wu with Azure Dragon. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Si with Gou Chen, hidden stem Dingsi, representing parents; the middle transmission is Shen with White Tiger, hidden stem Gengshen, representing children; the final transmission is Yin with Teng Snake, hidden stem Jiayin, representing officials and spirits. Si is in a three punishment relationship with Shen, and Shen is in a three punishment relationship with Yin. The Hidden Chant lesson itself does not move, relying entirely on this layer of three punishments to initiate action. The distinction between defense and attack in military operations also originates from here.

Zhu Bi submitted a report saying: This divination result is a Hidden Chant. The three punishments of巳, 申, and 寅 are successively triggered. There is movement hidden within stillness, and battle hidden within defense. Although surrounded, there is an opportunity for attack. The "Gou Chen Ode" says: Counting forward four positions from Gou Chen, we reach the Grand General, which governs military calamities and continuous litigation. In this divination, Gou Chen is the initiating transmission. Although it suggests warfare, today's day stem is Wu. On a Wu day, Gou Chen is considered a virtuous deity, not conflicting with the day stem or day branch. This indicates that the enemy is advancing towards us but has not yet reached the point of actual combat. 申 is "You Du," governing the movement of troops and horses. Although it enters the three transmissions, it cannot control the day stem or day branch. This position also rides the White Tiger and returns to its own house, unwilling to take action. This suggests that although the enemy has gathered, they have not yet reached the city gates. Moreover, Taizhou's defensive side is governed by Tai Yin, which is a deity of concealment and cover. It is not easy to mobilize troops easily. The divination contains self-punishment in the position, indicating that the people may experience some alarm and minor injuries, but not serious harm. The final transmission is ridden by Teng Snake, suggesting a period of unease and uncertainty, but nothing more than worry and hesitation.

On a Wuwu day, can the elder predict how long the prolonged rain will last and on which day it will clear? (Fragmentary text)

In the 12th year of the Yongzheng era, on the 16th day of the sixth month, at the official residence in Fushan, Hai Ning, Ke翁 ordered a divination to inquire about when the continuous rain would clear. This day was Wuwu day. The divination was cast with the Month General 'Mao' added to the Mao hour, resulting in the hour and the time being in the same position, forming a Hidden Chant lesson. This case is recorded in The Fragmentary Compilation.

The lesson is the same as the previous one: Gou Chen is on Si, Qing Long on Wu, Tian Kong on Wei, Bai Hu on Shen, Tai Chang on You, Xuan Wu on Xu, Tai Yin on Hai, Tian Hou on Zi, Gui Ren on Chou, Teng Snake on Yin, Zhu Que on Mao, and Liu He on Chen. Mao is the hour, and the Heaven Plate and Earth Plate coincide, indicating a Hidden Chant. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem Wu is on Si, with Si occupied by Gou Chen, making the first and second lessons the same; the Day Branch Wu is on Wu, with Wu occupied by Qing Long, making the third and fourth lessons the same. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Si with Gou Chen, hidden stem Dingsi, representing parents; the second transmission is Shen with Bai Hu, hidden stem Gengshen, representing children; the third transmission is Yin with Teng Snake, hidden stem Jiayin, representing officials and ghosts. The rules for predicting weather are that the Day Stem governs the day and the Day Branch governs the night. In this lesson, the Day Stem is occupied by Gou Chen and the Day Branch by Qing Long, so all the subsequent interpretations focus on these two.

The interpretation says: This rain started on the 12th, the day of Jiayin, and for several days, it was clear during the day and rainy at night. The reason is that the day stem governs the day and the day branch governs the night. The day stem is covered by Gou Chen, which belongs to earth, so the day is suitable for clear weather; the day branch is covered by Azure Dragon, which belongs to wood and governs rain, so the night is suitable for rain, and it keeps raining continuously. Moreover, Azure Dragon rises to the sky and the sea floods the land, so the rain naturally lasts long and is heavy. As for the days when it clears up: Although the rain started on the day of Jiayin, it only poured heavily on the day of Yimao. It would probably clear up on the 19th, the day of Xinyou. Later, it indeed turned clear on the 19th. Someone asked me directly: Why did you determine that the 19th would be clear? I said: Yimao is the beginning of this rain, and both the heavenly stem and earthly branch belong to wood. On the 19th, Xinyou, both the heavenly stem and earthly branch belong to metal, and metal controls wood, so the rain naturally cannot continue strongly. This is the first reason. Furthermore,卯 and酉 are the gates of the sun and moon's rising and setting. Now the sun is moving to the卯 position and has been blocked by clouds and rain; when it reaches酉, it will be opposed, and the clouds will be dispersed. The moon belongs to water, and water enters the酉 gate; the sun belongs to fire, and fire rises through the卯 gate. A bright red sun shines out, so how could it not be clear?
