On theGuichou day of the seventh month of theBingzi year in the Ming Chongzhen period, the month general was午 and the hour was酉. The divination was about military affairs. This case is recorded in the《Guo Shi Zhan An》, which is a record of divinations by Guo Yüqing. The month general午 was placed over酉 hour. The heaven plate advanced nine positions ahead of the earth plate. In this lesson, the three transmissions were戌, 未, and 辰, all of which were official ghosts, which was extremely dangerous. However, because the Teng Snake and the White Tiger clashed with each other, the凶 spirits restrained each other, and thus did not cause great harm.

The twelve palaces of the lesson disk have their earthly branches and the celestial generals riding them: Yin is occupied by Liu He, Mao by Vermilion Bird, Chen by Teng Snake, Si by Nobleman, Chou by Gou Chen, Wu by Heavenly Empress, Zi by Azure Dragon, Wei by Tai Yin, Hai by Tian Kong, Xu by White Tiger, You by Tai Chang, and Shen by Black Tortoise. The Nobleman is located on Si, and the generals proceed from Si in reverse order. The four lessons are read from right to left: the day stem is癸, which is lodged in Chou; on Chou there is Xu; on Xu there is Wei; the day branch Chou has Xu; on Xu there is Wei. The celestial generals riding the four lessons in sequence are White Tiger, Tai Yin, White Tiger, and Tai Yin. The three transmissions are arranged from top to bottom: the first transmission is Xu, with the ten-day cycle遁 of Geng Xu, where Xu earth overcomes癸 water as official ghost, riding White Tiger; the middle transmission is Wei, with the ten-day cycle遁 of Ding Wei, also official ghost, riding Tai Yin; the final transmission is Chen, with the ten-day cycle遁 of Jiachen, also official ghost, riding Teng Snake. The first lesson "Chou has Xu" is where the upper god Xu earth overcomes the lower god, which is upper overcoming lower, taking Xu as the initiating transmission to form the original head lesson. All three transmissions are earth, forming ghosts, which exactly matches the saying "official ghosts everywhere"; and the first transmission White Tiger on Xu and the final transmission Teng Snake on Chen, with the conflict between Chen and Xu, two evils fighting each other, so the evil is not extreme. Shen is the god of wandering capital, riding the month builder of July and being prosperous and strong, indicating the military force is at its peak.

Guo Yuqing said: On the eleventh day of the seventh month (the text here is missing a character), news came that a large army had stationed itself in a camp. Receiving this divination, the entire chart was filled with official ghosts, fortunately it was a case of using a凶 to control another凶 -- the Teng Snake and White Tiger, riding on the branches of Chen and Xu, clashed with each other, thus causing no major harm. The branch of Shen is the "You Du" deity representing military forces, riding on the month builder of the seventh month and being prosperous and strong, indicating that the large army was at its peak. By the ninth month, Shen would fall into the storage, and its strength would naturally decline. At that time, a friend from Sheji named Tao Zhansheng asked whether the examination in August would be postponed. I had cast another divination for that, but now I cannot recall the exact chart, only remembering the interpretation that the Zhu Que riding on Xu would indicate September. Later, the army indeed withdrew eastward on the third day of the ninth month, and the examination was moved to the twenty-ninth day of the ninth month. (Below "July eleventh is a leap month," there is a missing character, and the original text is incomplete.)

Book Six

Jiayin day

On the Jiayin day, Chen Long divined in the capital that Qian Shisheng would be appointed to the government.

In the sixth year of the Chongzhen era (Guiyou year, 1633 CE), on the seventh month, the first day of the Jiayin, at the hour of Shen, a divination was cast. "Chongzheng" is another name for "Chongzhen," changed due to taboo. The person casting the divination was Mr. Chen Longzheng, a famous scholar from Jiaxiang in Zhejiang Province. He was a renowned Confucian scholar of the late Ming dynasty and had studied under the leader of the Eastern Forest faction, Gao Pianlong. He became an imperial examiner in the Jiaxu year of the seventh year of Chongzhen. At that time, he was in the capital preparing for the imperial examination and cast a divination for his fellow townsman Qian Shisheng, asking whether Qian could be appointed to the cabinet and become a prime minister. "Shao Zongbo" is a term for the Minister of Rites, and "Tai Shi" is a term for a historian in the Hanlin Academy. Qian Shisheng was also from Jiaxiang, and he had been the top scholar in the Bingchen year of the forty-fourth year of the Wanli era, and was then serving in the Ministry of Rites. This passage is from Chen Gongxian's "Lunin Zhinan" of the Ming dynasty.

This is a flattened version of the circular layout of the divination chart. The outer circle consists of the twelve earthly branches of the Heaven Plate and the Heavenly Generals associated with each branch: the Vermilion Bird is on卯, the Liu He on辰, the Gou Chen on巳, the Azure Dragon on午, the Tian Kong on未, the White Tiger on申, the Tai Chang on酉, the Black Tortoise on戌, the Tai Yin on亥, the Heavenly Empress on子, the Nobleman on丑, and the Teng Snake on寅. Since the time is申, which belongs to the daytime, and on a Jia day the daytime nobleman is on丑, the generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The middle three rows represent the four lessons, read from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jia is lodged in寅, and on寅 there is子, with the Heavenly Empress as its general; the second lesson, on子 there is戌, with the Black Tortoise as its general; the third lesson, the day branch寅 has子 on it, with the Heavenly Empress as its general; the fourth lesson, on子 there is戌, with the Black Tortoise as its general. The last column is the three transmissions, read from top to bottom as initial, middle, and final: the initial transmission is戌, with the hidden stem Ren, representing the wife's wealth in the wood element, with the Black Tortoise as its general; the middle transmission is申, with the hidden stem Geng, representing the official ghost, with the White Tiger as its general; the final transmission is午, with the hidden stem Wu, representing the son, with the Azure Dragon as its general.

Chen Gongxian said: In this divination, the initiating transmission falls on the heavenly stem and earthly branch. The heavenly stem and earthly branch of the day both have the god of the branch as zi. Zi is located in the void of the Jiayin decade, and it is also the place where the wood of Jia is weakened. Normally, one should not be allowed to become a prime minister. However, I still concluded that he would become a prime minister. There are three reasons: the middle transmission, shen, is both the post-horse of yin day and indicates royal orders; the final transmission, wu, is exactly the month general of the current month, and it is also occupied by the azure dragon; furthermore, the heavenly stem of the year, you, is riding on Tai Chang, and you metal is the official star for jia wood, and it is also placed on the person's year. The REN Jing says: "When Tai Chang enters the official's territory, it is the current prime minister; when the month general rides the azure dragon, one can become a prime minister with a single statement." With such a divination pattern, what else can one do but be a prime minister? The only concern is that the azure dragon, which is the general, is actually attacking the heavenly stem of the year. The azure dragon is riding on wu fire, and wu fire attacks the heavenly stem of the year, you metal. In the future, he might inevitably face disappointment at court and have to step down. Later events indeed matched exactly what was predicted.

The editor's note for verification: Qian Shisheng entered the cabinet in the Guiyou year (the sixth year of Chongzhen), and was dismissed back to his hometown in the Bingzi year (the ninth year of Chongzhen). The reason was that he had previously presented the four maxims "broad, simple, humble, and impartial" to the emperor, and later submitted a memorial opposing the search for civilian wealth and resisting the forced collection of money from wealthy families in Jiangnan to contribute to military funds. The emperor was displeased with both matters, so he resigned and left. The divination text's statement "perhaps not being pleased by the sovereign and thus resigning" precisely applies here.

On Jiayin day, Wang Mufu divined about a child contracting smallpox.

In the clear reign of Qianlong during the Wuchen year (the thirteenth year of Qianlong, 1748), in the戌 month, on the Jiayin day, the Month General was Mao (Taichong). The divination was cast at the辰 hour. The subject of the divination was a child contracting smallpox, also known as measles. This entry is from Wang Mufu's "Divination Records."

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate has twelve Earthly Branches each multiplied by a Heavenly General: Chen is multiplied by Liu He, Si by Gou Chen, Wu by Qing Long, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by Bai Hu, You by Tai Chang, Xu by Xuan Wu, Hai by Tai Yin, Zi by Tian Hou, Chou by Guiren, Yin by Teng Snake, and Mao by Zhu Que. The hour of Chen belongs to the daytime, and on a Jiayi day, the daytime nobleman is used, with the generals proceeding in order. The Mao general is placed on the Chen hour, and the Heaven Plate is one position behind the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jiayin's lodging palace is on Yin, with the Zi branch on Yin, multiplied by Guiren; the second lesson, the Zi branch on Chou, multiplied by Tian Hou; the third lesson, the day branch on Yin has the Zi branch, multiplied by Guiren; the fourth lesson, the Zi branch on Chou, multiplied by Tian Hou. The three transmissions proceed from first to last: the first transmission is Zi, representing parents, multiplied by Tian Hou, with the mark 「◎」 indicating it falls in the旬空 (the Zi and Chou branches are empty in the Jiayin decade); the middle transmission is Hai, with the hidden heavenly stem Gui, representing parents, multiplied by Tai Yin; the final transmission is Xu, with the hidden heavenly stem Ren, representing wife and wealth, multiplied by Xuan Wu.

Wang Mufu said: This divination is about a son developing a rash, and there is no harm. In the chart, there is no official ghost coming to afflict the day stem. The son's line is positioned in the southern direction, which is bright. The "Heavenly Joy" deity is also located in the life qi area. In the three transmissions, the water elements of zi and hai both nourish the day stem jia wood. The nobleman and heavenly empress are combined above the day stem and day branch. Moreover, the jia wood's禄 is in yin, which is the day branch itself. Since this is a father asking about his son, the day branch represents the younger generation, and since the day branch is in a strong position, the son will not be harmed. Looking further, the branch you, which is the nobleman's riding branch, is in front, and the branch xu is behind, enclosing the water elements zi and hai that could afflict the son. These are all auspicious signs. The three transmissions, zi, hai, and xu, retreat step by step, moving towards night, and the first two transmissions are water, while the final transmission is earth. The final transmission xu is occupied by xuanwu, and also carries the凶神 "blood厌"—water retreating and earth coming to close it off, which is exactly the appearance of a rash that has formed a scab. Later, it indeed came true.

In general, when divining about smallpox or measles, one should avoid the "Sun" (i.e., the deity presiding over the Sun) being too strong, especially when accompanied by mutual destruction. Because smallpox is originally a toxic combination ofEarlier Heaven fire and dampness carried from the womb, if the fire energy becomes strong, the disease will erupt. Therefore, this type of divination pattern is most feared.

On Jiayin day, Guo De Yin divined the family dwelling.

In the third year of the Jianyan era (1129 CE), during the sixth month, on the day Jiayin, the Month General was Wei (Xiaoji), and the divination was cast at the hour Wu. The person seeking the divination was Guo Deyin, born in the year Renshen, aged thirty-eight that year, asking about his family home. This entry appears in both the "Fang Ben Zhan An" and "Kou Jian" texts, with the interpretation provided by Shao Yanhe, a renowned master of the Six壬 school during the Song dynasty.

The outer circle consists of the twelve Earthly Branches of the Heaven Plate and the corresponding Heavenly Generals: Chou is accompanied by 'Nobleman', Yin by 'Teng Snake', Mao by 'Vermilion Bird', Chen by 'Liu He', Si by 'Gou Chen', Wu by 'Azure Dragon', Wei by 'Tian Kong', Shen by 'White Tiger', You by 'Tai Chang', Xu by 'Black Tortoise', Hai by 'Tai Yin', and Zi by 'Heavenly Empress'. The time of Wu is daytime, and on a Jia day, the daytime nobleman is Chou, with all generals proceeding in order. The general Wei is placed on the time of Wu, and the Heaven Plate advances one position ahead of the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is Yin, with Yin having Mao, accompanied by 'Vermilion Bird'; the second lesson, Mao has Chen, accompanied by 'Liu He'; the third lesson, the day branch Yin has Mao, accompanied by 'Vermilion Bird'; the fourth lesson, Mao has Chen, accompanied by 'Liu He'. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Chen, with the hidden stem Ding, representing wife wealth in the Wood element, accompanied by 'Liu He'; the middle transmission is Si, with the hidden stem Ding, representing son, accompanied by 'Gou Chen' (the 'Chen' in the column of the three transmissions refers to 'Gou Chen'); the final transmission is Wu, with the hidden stem Wu, representing son, accompanied by 'Azure Dragon'.

Shao Yanhe said: The heavenly stem and earthly branch of the person and the house both meet the current strong god. Now the lesson is cast in June, this strong energy does not belong to the five phases of his surname, but only stays with the strong energy of eastern wood. Therefore, he should only keep to his proper role and not engage in any business. If he remains content with his proper role, he will naturally enjoy happiness, but if he starts to engage in business, he will suffer. The heaven plate has chen added to mao, mao and chen are in conflict, and chen is also occupied by Liu He, which is like adding another lock. The heaven plate has si added to chen, chen is the position of the earth net, and si is also occupied by Gou Chen, which is like adding another lock. The three transmissions proceed in this way, passing on to descendants - fire is the son of jia wood, which indicates spending money, leading to the decline of the family. The children are also many and sickly, money is exhausted but people still die, these are children coming to collect debts. In the coming years, the places where the year of birth arrives, the children's debts will be even more severe.

On Jiayin day, divination was performed at a house in Yangzhou to investigate strange occurrences.

In the year Jisi, fifth month, on the day Jiayin, the Month General is Shen (Shen), and the divination is started at the hour Wei. The subject is to inquire about a strange occurrence that suddenly happened in the family. This passage is from Wang Mufu's "Zhanyan."

Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai Trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Kun (Earth) Heavenly Plate and Earthly Plate both advance by one position at the hour of Shen, so the resulting Heaven and Earth Plates and the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions are identical to the previous example of Guo De Yin's divination of a residence. Outer circle: Chou is occupied by 'Nobleman', Yin is occupied by 'Teng Snake', Mao is occupied by 'Vermilion Bird', Chen is occupied by 'Liu He', Si is occupied by 'Gou Chen', Wu is occupied by 'Azure Dragon', Wei is occupied by 'Tian Kong', Shen is occupied by 'White Tiger', You is occupied by 'Tai Chang', Xu is occupied by 'Black Tortoise', Hai is occupied by 'Tai Yin', Zi is occupied by 'Heavenly Empress'. Four Lessons, moving from right to left: Jia's Lodging Palace is on Yin, Yin is occupied by Mao, which is occupied by Vermilion Bird; Mao is occupied by Chen, which is occupied by Liu He; the Day Branch on Yin is occupied by Mao, which is occupied by Vermilion Bird; Mao is occupied by Chen, which is occupied by Liu He. Three Transmissions: First Transmission is Chen, hidden stem is Bing, representing wife's wealth, occupied by Liu He; Middle Transmission is Si, hidden stem is Ding, representing son, occupied by Gou Chen; Final Transmission is Wu, hidden stem is Wu, representing son, occupied by Azure Dragon.

Wang Mufu said: This person lives in the old city of Yangzhou, and his family suddenly experienced strange occurrences, with dust everywhere in the house, and the whole family could not rest day or night. I said: This is an omen of discord among the household. The卯 (Mao) is the yang blade of the Jia wood, and it is occupied by the Vermilion Bird, which governs disputes, indicating that the problem is caused by lack of harmony among people. The "Heavenly Eye" spirit is in the Wei position. The Heaven Plate Wei is placed on the Earth Plate Wu, and Wu represents the hall, so the strange occurrence should be within the hall. The壬 Jing says: Mao is associated with foxes; Mao also corresponds to the second mansion of the Twenty-Eight Mansions, the Heart Mansion. Fire, in the Five Constants, governs propriety, and when propriety is lost, it loses its regular course, so supernatural beings can harass people. However, this is not a serious matter and will soon disappear. Because the initiating transmission is the Chen, which is the "Heavenly Pole," and it is occupied by the Liu He, while Chen is derived from Mao. The middle transmission shows the Si, which is occupied by the Gou Chen, which governs entanglement and delay, so it will disappear after forty days. Whenever the "Heavenly Eye" appears together with the "Month Aversion" and the "Ding Spirit," it indicates strange occurrences, and this lesson exactly includes all these elements. As for the initiating transmission of this lesson being the wife's wealth, and the final transmission being the Azure Dragon responding to it, along with wealth appearing in the household, the other elements of the lesson do not match, so I did not comment on them. The Si and Wu belong to fire, which is the image of dust, perfectly matching the situation in his family.

Jiayin day, the official's servant girl was stolen from the temple.

In September, on the day of Jiayin, the Month General is Mao (Taichong). The divination is cast at the hour of Chou. There was a gentleman staying in a temple who lost a servant girl, so he sought a divination. This case is from the "Fang Ben Zhan An," and the interpretation was provided by Shao Yanhe.

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate, with its twelve earthly branches, each carries a Heavenly General: Wei carries 'Nobleman', Wu carries 'Teng Snake', Si carries 'Vermilion Bird', Chen carries 'Liu He', Mao carries 'Gou Chen' (written as 'Chen'), Yin carries 'Azure Dragon', Chou carries 'Tian Kong', Zi carries 'White Tiger', Hai carries 'Tai Chang', Xu carries 'Black Tortoise', You carries 'Tai Yin', and Shen carries 'Heavenly Empress'. Chou hour belongs to night, and on a Jia day, the night Nobleman is at Wei. Therefore, the generals move in reverse. The Mao general is added to the Chou hour. The Heaven Plate advances two positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is at Yin, with Yin carrying Chen, which carries Liu He; the second lesson, Chen carries Wu, which carries Teng Snake; the third lesson, the day branch at Yin carries Chen, which carries Liu He; the fourth lesson, Chen carries Wu, which carries Teng Snake. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Chen, with the hidden stem Bing, representing wife and wealth, carrying Liu He; the middle transmission is Wu, with the hidden stem Wu, representing son and grandson, carrying Teng Snake; the final transmission is Shen, with the hidden stem Geng, representing official and ghost, carrying Heavenly Empress.

Shao Yanhe said: This servant girl has not gone far; she is hidden by a violent man in the southwest attic. It is about to be revealed today. The Heaven Plate's Chen is placed on the Earth Plate's Yin, and Chen and Yin form Liu He; the Nayin sound element of Jiayin day belongs to water, and the storage of water is in Chen, so everyone calls this the "Cutting the Gate" divination. Also, seeing Chen as the "Kui Gang" initiating transmission, it is certain that the master has already left, and those nearby will also go far. But they do not know: the water of Jiayin's Nayin is in its storage in Chen, and since Chen is the first transmission, the middle transmission's Wu is the image of a gentle woman, Wu placed on Chen is called "Blocking the Gate," so the person cannot actually go out. The final transmission's Shen rides the Heavenly Empress, which is the image of a female ghost, and Shen is placed on Wu, which is the image of roads, meaning she is blocked by a ghost on the road and cannot proceed; the Heavenly Empress naturally governs concealment and hiding. Also, Gou Chen is riding on Mao, and Wu on Wu is seen, with Wu being the image of a building, so it is determined that she is hidden in an attic above. As for why it will be revealed today, it is because the divination shows an "internal conflict" image. (The original text briefly mentions "Wu riding Wu" without detailed explanation; the "southwest" refers to the direction of the place where Wu is placed on the Earth Plate.) Later, she was indeed caught the next day in an attic in the southwest of a house near a temple.

On the Jiayin day, the ruler of the day, Zhen, was summoned to predict the time of rain in the capital city.

In theGuiyou year of Mingdao during the reign of Emperor Renzong (the second year of Mingdao, 1033 CE), the capital city had not rained since March and remained dry until June. Emperor Renzong summoned the diviner Yuan Zhen to cast a horary chart to inquire about the situation. The day on which the chart was cast was theJiayin day, with the month general being 未 (small auspicious), and the time was in the辰 hour. This passage is from the last volume of the book titled "Yu Lianhuan."

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate, with its twelve earthly branches, each carries a Heavenly General: Chou carries 'Nobleman', Zi carries 'Teng Snake', Hai carries 'Vermilion Bird', Xu carries 'Liu He', You carries 'Gou Chen', Shen carries 'Azure Dragon', Wei carries 'Tian Kong', Wu carries 'White Tiger', Si carries 'Tai Chang', Chen carries 'Black Tortoise', Mao carries 'Tai Yin', and Yin carries 'Heavenly Empress'. The hour of Chen belongs to the daytime, and on a Jia day, the daytime nobleman is used, which is Chou. The general Wei is placed on the hour of Chen, and the Heaven Plate is three positions ahead of the Earth Plate, so the nobleman on Chou falls on the Earth Plate's position of Xu, causing the generals to move in reverse. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is Yin, and Yin is occupied by Si, which carries Tai Chang; the second lesson, Si is occupied by Shen, which carries Azure Dragon; the third lesson, the day branch Yin is occupied by Si, which carries Tai Chang; the fourth lesson, Si is occupied by Shen, which carries Azure Dragon. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Shen, hidden heavenly stem Geng, representing official ghost, carrying Azure Dragon; the middle transmission is Hai, hidden heavenly stem Gui, representing parents, carrying Vermilion Bird; the final transmission is Yin, hidden heavenly stem Jia, representing brother, carrying Heavenly Empress.

Yuan Zhen reported that today by the hour of Shen the sky would become stormy with clouds and thunder would burst forth, and by the hour of You the storm would subside. Then on the day of Gengshen at the hour of Wu, there would be a great storm with strong winds and heavy rain, although the onset would be sudden, the heavy rain would only last for an hour. From then on, the storms would continue without ceasing, and on the day of Jiazi there would certainly be thunder and lightning, with torrential rains. Later, all these predictions came true one by one.

The interpretation is as follows: The initiating transmission is on the branch of Shen, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon. Shen is also placed on the Earth Plate at Si, and since Shen belongs to the White Tiger's own branch, this is called "Dragon over Tiger," indicating there will be rain and wind. The middle transmission is on the branch of Hai, which is occupied by the Vermilion Bird. Hai is also placed on the Earth Plate at Shen, and since the Vermilion Bird belongs to fire and Hai belongs to water, this is called "fire and water fighting," indicating thunder. The day stem's heavenly stem is Si fire, but it is occupied by Tai Chang, the earth god. Fire generates earth and consumes fire, so there will be thunder but no rain. "Dengming" is Hai, the water god, which is placed on Shen. Therefore, it corresponds to the day of Geng Shen. Wu is the position where yin begins, so it should occur at the hour of Wu. The middle transmission's Hai is also the yin god of Shen (Shen being the White Tiger's own branch), so the effect comes quickly. Hai is occupied by the Vermilion Bird, indicating heavy rain. The final transmission's Yin is placed on Hai, and Yin is also occupied by the Heavenly Empress, the cloud god. Hai is located in the Northwest, so clouds rise from the Northwest. On the day of Jia Zi, the Heaven Plate's Mao is placed on the Earth Plate's Zi, and clouds and thunder overlap, forming thunderstorms in summer. Mao is also occupied by Tai Yin, the metal god, which generates water, so there is heavy rain. The rain lasts for one fu period (one day and night) because Tai Yin has returned to its own branch You, and the Earth Plate's You is occupied by Shenhou Zi water.

On Jiayin day, Wang Mufu divined about pregnancy and childbirth.

In the year of Jimao, seventh month, on the day of Jiayin, the Month General is Si (Taiyi). The divination is cast at the hour of Yin. The subject of the divination is about pregnancy and childbirth. The man's birth year is Xinhai, aged twenty-nine; the woman's birth year is Wuwu, aged twenty-two. This entry is from Wang Mufu's "Zhanyan."

At the time of巳 (Snake) adding to寅 (Rat), the Heaven Plate moves three places ahead of the Earth Plate, so the arrangement of Heaven and Earth Plates and the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions is exactly the same as in the previous case of Yuan Zhen's rain divination lesson. Outer circle: Chou (Ox) is occupied by 'Nobleman', Zi (Rat) by 'Teng Snake', Hai (Pig) by 'Vermilion Bird', Xu (Dog) by 'Liu He', You (Rooster) by 'Gou Chen', Shen (Monkey) by 'Azure Dragon', Wei (Sheep) by 'Tian Kong', Wu (Horse) by 'White Tiger', Si (Snake) by 'Tai Chang', Chen (Dragon) by 'Black Tortoise', Mao (Rabbit) by 'Tai Yin', and Yin (Tiger) by 'Heavenly Empress'. The Four Lessons, moving from right to left: Jia (Jia) is lodged in Yin (Tiger), with Si (Snake) on Yin, occupied by Tai Chang; Si (Snake) has Shen (Monkey) on it, occupied by Azure Dragon; the Day Branch Yin (Tiger) has Si (Snake) on it, occupied by Tai Chang; Si (Snake) has Shen (Monkey) on it, occupied by Azure Dragon — only two lessons are formed, and the heavenly stem above the Day Stem and the Day Branch are indistinct from each other, which is exactly the case of 'Ba Zhuang' (Eight Special). The Three Transmissions: the first transmission is Shen (Monkey), with the hidden stem Geng (Geng), representing official ghost, occupied by Azure Dragon; the middle transmission is Hai (Pig), with the hidden stem Gui (Gui), representing parents, occupied by Vermilion Bird; the final transmission is Yin (Tiger), with the hidden stem Jia (Jia), representing brother, occupied by Heavenly Empress.

Wang Mufu said: Divining pregnancy resulted in the 'Closed Mouth' pattern, which also belongs to the 'Eight Special' category. The fetal god transforms into an official ghost, indicating a private pregnancy. All miscellaneous and licentious patterns usually indicate disorder and licentiousness, because the day stem and day branch are not distinct, and there is no clear boundary between internal and external. Moreover, the ages of the two people are intermingled: the man at twenty-nine has his age at Wu, which is exactly the woman's birth year Wuwu; the woman at twenty-two has her age at Hai, which is exactly the man's birth year Xinhai. Each person's age falls on the other's birth year, how can this still be considered a proper marital relationship? Furthermore, tomorrow is the Qixi Festival, which is close to the time of the乞巧 (Qiqiao) festival;卯 and酉 are also 'private doors', and the two have unrestricted interactions. Fortunately, the divination showed an elder woman appearing to save the situation. Later it was found out that this was indeed a pregnancy from an illicit relationship, and the man with the Xinhai birth year was not her husband. Divine wisdom cannot be deceived, and it has reached such a point.

On Jiayin day, Wang Xiancheng divined about illness.

In the year Wushen, sixth lunar month, on the day Jiayin, the Month General is Wei (Xiaoji). The divination is cast at the hour Mao. The person seeking the divination is Wang Xiancheng, born in the year Jiaxu, who is thirty-five years old this year. He is asking about an illness. This case is found in the "Koujian" and "Fangben Zhan'an," and the interpretation is from Shao Yanhe.

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate, with its twelve earthly branches, each carries a Heavenly General: Chou carries 'Nobleman', Zi carries 'Teng Snake', Hai carries 'Vermilion Bird', Xu carries 'Liu He', You carries 'Gou Chen' (written as 'Chen'), Shen carries 'Azure Dragon', Wei carries 'Tian Kong', Wu carries 'White Tiger', Si carries 'Tai Chang', Chen carries 'Black Tortoise', Mao carries 'Tai Yin', and Yin carries 'Heavenly Empress'. The卯 hour belongs to the day, and on a Jia day, the day's nobleman is used at the daytime hour Chou. The general Wei is added to the卯 hour. The Heaven Plate moves ahead four positions relative to the Earth Plate, so the Nobleman, who is on Chou, falls on the Earth Plate's You position, causing the generals to move in reverse. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is on Yin, and Yin is occupied by Wu, which carries the White Tiger; the second lesson, Wu is occupied by Xu, which carries Liu He; the third lesson, the day's branch Yin is occupied by Wu, which carries the White Tiger; the fourth lesson, Wu is occupied by Xu, which carries Liu He. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Shen, with the hidden stem Geng, representing official ghost, carrying the Azure Dragon; the middle transmission is Wu, with the hidden stem Wu, representing son, carrying the White Tiger; the final transmission is Wu, with the hidden stem Wu, representing son, carrying the White Tiger. The middle and final transmissions are the same Wu, together with the heavenly stem on the branch, making four Wus in the entire lesson.

Shao Yanhe said: In this case, both the day stem and the day branch are connected to the god of the hour, which is Wu. Jia and Yin, both wood, die at Wu. How can they withstand the middle transmission and final transmission both being Wu? The initial transmission is Shen, which is the绝神 of Jia wood. In June, Wu is the "month bingfu," the strong fire consumes the weak and confined wood. Also, this palace is attacking the parents' yao, so it cannot protect the parents, nor can it protect the children, and even the self is in danger. Fortunately, his year of birth is on Zi water, so it cannot be completely burned. When he reaches the age of thirty-seven and his year of birth moves to Yin, it becomes difficult. At thirty-nine, his year of birth moves to Chen, and Chen also has Shen, which is even worse. He will certainly first kill his children, then suffer from heart disease, and eventually become a cripple. Later, Wang Xiancheng was assigned to take office in Shao Wu Jun, and that year he lost four children. He indeed suffered from heart disease and did not go to take office, but became crazy and wandered around. At thirty-seven, he became痴呆 and did not recognize people, nor did he eat or drink, and it took nearly two months to recover. At thirty-nine, it happened again, but he did not die. At forty, the heavenly stem reached Yin, and he died.

this is because there are four wus on the day stem, day branch, middle transmission, and final transmission, which together devour the wood of jiayin. these four wus are four 'month bingfu' and four 'heavenly ghosts'. the heavenly ghost is a divine evil that only moves on the four central branches: zi, wu, mao, and you. the song says 'jian yin resides in you and moves in reverse order', meaning that when the first month is jian yin, the heavenly ghost is in you, and then it moves in reverse order on the four central branches each month. it also says 'if the year's branch is on the day's stem, it brings calamity, punishment, and illness'. this lesson is in the sixth month, which is jian wei, so the heavenly ghost falls on wu. these four wus are also four 'heaven and earth turning killings' (spring in mao, summer in wu, autumn in you, winter in zi), and combined with four white tigers, so four children will be lost. wu on the human body represents the heart, and wu meets the white tiger, so it indicates madness. wood dies in wu, so he will become a useless person. (the original text has a missing character at the beginning of the sentence 'gai shang wu', which refers to the wu on the day stem.)

Heavenly ghosts mostly arise from epidemic diseases, so the number of deaths is usually two, four, five, or six. As for the method of calculating deities and ominous influences, "Lucky Post" is calculated according to the fifth month, while other deities and ominous influences are calculated according to the sixth month. This is determined based on whether the solar term has already passed (the original text is very brief, and this is the general meaning). Here we further discuss life and death: when the year stem arrives at寅 (Yin), and午 (Wu) appears on寅, Wu is the death deity for the day stem. The four instances of Wu also serve as death deity, heavenly ghost, and disease deity, and on top of that, the White Tiger is added. This completely drains the weak and confined energy of the day stem Jia Wood. Wu represents the heart in the human body and is considered the "confusion and delirium deity." The White Tiger is also the deity of roads, so this person becomes insane and runs about.

On a Jiayin day, if the dove calls, it is an omen of rain.

In the year of Gengyin, fifth lunar month, on the day of Jiayin, the Month General was Shen (Chuansong). The divination was cast at the hour of Mao. Because of a severe drought, a sudden sound of the sparrow-hawk (a bird) was heard, and there is a folk belief that the call of the sparrow-hawk is a sign of rain. Therefore, a divination was made to see if rain would come. This passage is from the Six壬 Guide. The interpretation was given by Chen Gongxian.

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate, with its twelve Earthly Branches, each carries a Heavenly General: Chou carries 'Nobleman', Zi carries 'Teng Snake', Hai carries 'Vermilion Bird', Xu carries 'Liu He', You carries 'Gou Chen', Shen carries 'Azure Dragon', Wei carries 'Tian Kong', Wu carries 'White Tiger', Si carries 'Tai Chang', Chen carries 'Black Tortoise', Mao carries 'Tai Yin', and Yin carries 'Heavenly Empress'. The hour of Mao belongs to the day, and on a Jia day, the day's nobleman is at Chou. The general Shen is added to the hour of Mao, and the Heaven Plate is five positions ahead of the Earth Plate, so the nobleman, who is at Chou, falls on the Earth Plate's position of Shen, thus the generals move in reverse. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is at Yin, and Yin is occupied by Wei, which carries Tian Kong; the second lesson, Wei is occupied by Zi, which carries Teng Snake; the third lesson, the day's branch Yin is occupied by Wei, which carries Tian Kong; the fourth lesson, Wei is occupied by Zi, which carries Teng Snake. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Zi, hidden stem Jia, representing parents, carrying Teng Snake; the middle transmission is Si, hidden stem Ding, representing children; the final transmission is Xu, hidden stem Ren, representing wife and wealth, carrying Liu He. It should be noted that the Heavenly General carried by the middle transmission Si, according to the original text, is marked as 'Tiger' (White Tiger) in the column of the three transmissions, but the outer circle places White Tiger at Wu and Tai Chang at Si, which are inconsistent. In the following commentary by Chen Gongxian, it says 'the middle transmission White Tiger is a wind killer', which is based on the White Tiger marked in the column of the three transmissions.

Chen Gongxian said: Although the sparrow is known for calling rain, this divination shows the image of strong wind and light rain. Because the initiating transmission "Shenhou" Zi falls into the旬空; the middle transmission is riding the White Tiger, which is the wind killer, and Si is also the "Ding Si" of the Jiayin decade; furthermore, the "Fengbo" is present on the day stem and day branch, and meets with Yin, and the Yin palace originally has the good wind mansion of Jiuxu. So how can there be no wind today? By the night of Zi hour, the旬空 fills up, yet there is still no rain at all. This is only because the course god is resting and meets with the empty place, so only a little rain falls, just to suppress the dust. Saying that it is not "Fengbo" is also the image of the day stem and day branch themselves. As for the divine omens, in the fifth month, the Fengbo is in Chen, and the wind killer is in Xu.

On the day branch Jiayin, the person's fate is determined by the initial and final positions.

In the year Bingzi, the tenth month (Hai), on the day Jiayin, the Month General is Mao (Taichong). The divination is cast at the hour Xu. The person seeking the divination belongs to the sign Chen. They are asking about the beginning, middle, and end of a particular matter. This passage is from Wang Mufu's "Zhanyan."

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate's twelve branches are occupied by the Heavenly Generals: Xu is occupied by Liu He, Hai by Vermilion Bird, Zi by Teng Snake, Chou by Nobleman, Yin by Heavenly Empress, Mao by Tai Yin, Chen by Black Tortoise, Si by Tai Chang, Wu by White Tiger, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by Azure Dragon, You by Gou Chen. When the general of Mao is added to Xu hour, the Heaven Plate is five positions ahead of the Earth Plate, and the Heaven and Earth Plates are the same as the previous lesson of Wen Jiao Zhan Yu. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is in Yin, with Wei on Yin, occupied by Tian Kong; the second lesson, Wei has Zi on it, occupied by Teng Snake; the third lesson, the day branch Yin has Wei on it, occupied by Tian Kong; the fourth lesson, Wei has Zi on it, occupied by Teng Snake—the heavenly stem and heavenly branch above the day stem are both Wei, which is still the lesson of 'Ba Zuan'. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Zi, representing parents, occupied by Teng Snake, '◎' indicates it is in the旬空; the middle transmission is Si, with hidden stem Ding, representing children, occupied by Tai Chang; the final transmission is Xu, with hidden stem Ren, representing wife and wealth, occupied by Liu He.

Wang Mufu said: This divination is really absurd - your money is his money, and his money is your money; both of you have wrong calculations, and in the end you deceive each other, so the matter becomes entangled. Is it like this? The person replied: Exactly so. This is because the "Bazhuan" chart has no distinction between the two sides, and both sides are each bearing theTomb Spirit (mù shén, tomb god). The hidden spirits are interfering with each other, and this is the situation. His birth year is in the辰 (chén) which is ruled by酉 (yǒu), and酉 is occupied byGou Chen (gòu chén). His year of movement is丑 (chǒu) which is occupied byNobleman (guì rén), almost leading to a lawsuit. Fortunately, the final transmission (末传) on戌 (xū) hasLiu He (liú hé), leaving a bit of order, so it can bewith difficulty (miǎn qiǎng) concluded. The year god is also an auspicious star, able to resolve the situation. TheVermilion Bird (zhū què) also comes to birth the day stem, otherwise it would be entangled. It will be resolved in the spring of next year in the second month, because the wood is cut off in申 (shēn), and申 is added to卯 (mǎo). Later it came true.

On Jiayin day, Guo Zhongqi divined the dwelling.

In the year Jiyou, sixth lunar month, on the day Jiayin, the Month General is Wei (Xiaoji). The divination is cast at the hour of Yin. The person asking the question is Guo Zhongqi, born in the year Xinwei, who is thirty-nine years old this year. He is asking about his residence. This entry appears in the "Song Edition Shao Case" and "Kou Jian," with the interpretation coming from Shao Yanhe.

The outer circle of the Heaven Plate, with its twelve earthly branches, each carries a Heavenly General: Wei carries the Nobleman, Shen carries the Teng Snake, You carries the Vermilion Bird, Xu carries Liu He, Hai carries Gou Chen (written as Chen), Yin carries the Azure Dragon, Chou carries Tian Kong, Yin carries the White Tiger, Mao carries Tai Chang, Chen carries the Black Tortoise, Si carries Tai Yin, and Wu carries the Heavenly Empress. The hour of Yin belongs to night, and on a Jia day, the night nobleman is used at Wei. The Wei general is placed on the Yin hour, and the Heaven Plate advances five positions relative to the Earth Plate, so the Nobleman, riding on Wei, falls on the Earth Plate's Yin position, thus the generals proceed in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, Jia's lodging palace is on Yin, with Wei on Yin, riding the Nobleman; the second lesson, Wei has Zi on it, riding the Azure Dragon; the third lesson, the day branch on Yin has Wei on it, riding the Nobleman; the fourth lesson, Wei has Zi on it, riding the Azure Dragon. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Zi, representing parents, riding the Azure Dragon, with the character 'Kong' beside it indicating it falls in the旬空; the middle transmission is Si, with the hidden heavenly stem Ding, representing children, riding Tai Yin; the final transmission is Xu, with the hidden heavenly stem Ren, representing wife's wealth, riding Liu He.

Shao Yanhe said: His destiny is Xinwei. Wei is the tomb of Jia wood, and the tomb covers the body, which is called "the heavenly net envelops itself." The first transmission is Zi, which is also Kongwang, and it is taken from the upper god Wei of the day stem and day branch. The middle transmission is Si, which also falls in Kongwang, equivalent to seeing descendants again on top of descendants, both falling into emptiness, indicating the loss of children and retreat of children, and the destiny's stars and fortune are certainly unfavorable. Since Qinglong falls into emptiness, even if he enters officialdom, he will not make any progress. The final transmission meets wife wealth, which certainly means he will need to remarry again, and only in his later years will it become smooth. Wei is also the tomb image of the well, and both the day stem and day branch's upper gods are Wei, indicating there is a well in the house, which is not auspicious. If he does not move, he will certainly die after sixteen years. Wei belongs to the number eight in the Ren system, and two eights multiplied together make sixteen. In the second year, Guo Zhongqi indeed moved to a new residence, and this ominous disaster was thus avoided.
