In the Guiyou year of the Chongzhen era, in the seventh lunar month, on the Xinmao day, Zhang Xiang came together with Mingjing Zong Kaixian from Yangzhou to inquire about the matter of the examination. From the divination by Chen's family mentioned below, it is clear that the question was actually about whether he would pass the imperial examination. The person reported the time as the寅 hour, so the diviner placed the Wu general at the top of the寅 to cast the horoscope. "Mingjing" is another term for a candidate for the imperial examination; "Chongzhen" is the era name of the Ming dynasty, and the Qing dynasty editions altered the character to avoid taboo. This entry is taken from the "Lunin Zhinan," divined by Chen Gongxian.

Above the arrangement of 'You Xu Hai Zi': Liu He occupies You, Gou Chen occupies Xu, Qing Long occupies Hai, and Tian Kong occupies Zi. The words 'Gou Long' are marked above Xu and Hai. On the left, Zhu Que occupies Shen, Teng Snake occupies Wei, and Nobleman occupies Wu. On the right, Bai Hu occupies Chou, Tai Chang occupies Yin. Below, the positions of Si and Chen are paired with Heavenly Empress and Tai Yin, and Mao is occupied by Xuan Wu. Nobleman occupies Wu, and the twelve generals proceed in order. When Wu general is placed on Yin at the time of Yin, the Heaven Plate advances four positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem Xin is lodged in Xu, and Xu is occupied by Yin, which is the first lesson; Yin is occupied by Wu, which is the second lesson; the Day Branch Mao is occupied by Wei, which is the third lesson; and Wei is occupied by Hai, which is the fourth lesson. The four upper deities Yin, Wu, Wei, and Hai are successively occupied by Tai Chang, Nobleman, Teng Snake, and Qing Long. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Wei, representing the parent's yao, with the hidden stem being Yi, occupying Teng Snake, and Wei is vacant on the day of Xin Mao; the second transmission is Hai, representing the son's yao, occupying Qing Long; the third transmission is Mao, representing the wife's wealth yao, occupying Xuan Wu.
Chen Gongxian said: He will certainly pass this examination. Someone asked: How can one know he will pass just by stating a single time? He replied: This is because the first class is supported by the Nobleman of the Curtain. Although the reported time is寅 (Yin) hour, this divination takes the daytime Nobleman, which is午 (Wu). Therefore,寅 becomes the position of the Nobleman of the Curtain. Moreover, it is directly above the Day Stem. That is,寅 is placed on the position of辛 (Xin), which is戌 (Xu). In addition, the Month General午 (Wu) is multiplied by the noble god and added to his birth time寅. Thus, his birth time is寅, and午 is the Month General of this divination, with the Nobleman added upon it. Therefore, he is certain to pass. However, the initiating transmission is未 (Wei), which falls in the旬空 (decade void). He must wait until the year of未 (Wei) to fill it, then he will pass with the first rank.
On Xinmao day, at the Yin hour, a person with the sound of a horn asks about their family home (direct and to the point).
In the sixth year of Yuanyou during the Northern Song dynasty, which was the year Xinwei, on the ninth month, on the day Xinmao, a person with the 'Jue Yin' sound element came to consult about his family dwelling. He reported that the time was the first watch, which is the寅 hour. He was born in the year Wuzi and was forty-four years old at that time. In ancient times, the surname was assigned according to the five tones of the Nayin system. Since Jue belongs to wood, he was called a 'Jue Yin person'. For this type of person, the household deity is located at the卯 position, which will be used in the following divination. This passage is also found in the final volume of both the 'Yizhen Jianxue' and the 'Yulianhuan'.

On the Heaven Plate, the arrangement of "You Xu Hai Zi" is paired with "Long Gou He Zhu," meaning the Azure Dragon is on You, the Gou Chen on Xu, the Liu He on Hai, and the Vermilion Bird on Zi. On the left, the Tian Kong is on Shen, and the White Tiger is on Wei. On the right, the Teng Snake is on Chou, and the Nobleman is on Yin. Below, the arrangement of "Wu Si Chen Mao" is paired with "Chang Xuan Yin Hou," meaning the Tai Chang is on Wu, the Black Tortoise on Si, the Tai Yin on Chen, and the Heavenly Empress on Mao. The Nobleman is on Yin, and since the twelve generals are in reverse order, Yin corresponds to night, using the night Nobleman. The four lessons and the previous example are the same, "Wei Mao Yin Xin" paired with "Hai Wei Wu Yin": the Day Stem Xin is lodged in Xu, Xu has Yin, Yin has Wu, the Day Branch Mao has Wei, and Wei has Hai; the four upper deities Yin, Wu, Wei, and Hai are successively occupied by the Nobleman, Tai Chang, White Tiger, and Liu He. The first transmission is Wei, representing the parents'爻, occupied by the White Tiger, marked with "◎" to indicate it is in the empty period. The middle transmission is Hai, representing the children's爻, occupied by Liu He. The final transmission is Mao, representing the wife's wealth爻, occupied by the Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions Hai, Mao, and Wei form a wood trinity, making it a "Qu Zhi" lesson.
Liu Rixin said: Your family's construction of houses and buildings does not follow the appropriate directions, and also misused the day branch and time, without understanding the prohibitions and taboos, so strange occurrences have continued to happen, with frequent funerals and mourning, and the matters have been delayed for a long time without resolution. The person seeking divination said: Indeed, there have been these calamities and sicknesses for a long time, and he is willing to seek a method to appease and resolve them. Liu Rixin said: This must be due to the violation of the Six Spirits and the Black Path. Since the time has already been long, there is no need to perform further appeasement rituals. All you need to do is remove this peach tree near the toilet, and move the toilet further away from the well, and the calamities will naturally disappear.
It is said that the three transmissions are initiated with the unmarked 'wei' placed on the 'mao' position. The 'wei' is riding on the White Tiger, so 'mao' is the dwelling place where the White Tiger resides. 'Mao' also governs the gate and door, and the spirit of the dwelling of a person with a horn tone is originally located at 'mao'. The middle transmission's 'hai' is the 'ding' spirit, riding on the六合, placed on the 'wei' which is the year's ruler. The person's age position is 'chou' riding on the腾蛇, so there is an occurrence of strange phenomena in the dwelling. The final transmission's Heavenly Empress is riding on 'mao' and placed on 'hai'. 'Hai' is the palace of twin fish, belonging to yin, which is exactly the place of yinvolent spirits. The two evils of flying soul and lost soul in September both fall on 'wei', and 'wei' is also riding on the White Tiger, so there are incidents of illness, mourning, and crying. In September, 'yin' is the month's aversion and 'xu' is the heavenly eye. 'Yin' is placed on 'xu', which is the month's aversion placed on the heavenly eye, so the strange occurrences last for days and months. According to the method, 'hai' is the toilet and 'wei' is the well. Now 'wei' is placed on 'hai', meaning the well and toilet are close to each other. 'Yin' is the peach and 'mao' is the tree, the course forms a curved and straight wood pattern. Wood in autumn sheds its leaves. Also, theLiu He is placed on the well and toilet, so the peach leaves fall into the well and toilet.
On the Xinmao day, at the hour of You, Master Ye, the tutor, divined the family dwelling (as recorded in the case file).

In the year of Wu Shen, during the first lunar month, on the day of Xin Mao, the divination was cast starting with the hour of Zi added to Wei. The person seeking divination, Ye the Assistant Teacher, was born in the year of Wu Wu, on the thirteenth day of the second lunar month at the hour of Yin. He is now fifty-one years old, and he is consulting about his family residence. "Assistant Teacher" refers to an official in the National University. Above the upper row 「Xu Hai Zi Chou」: Gou Chen occupies Xu, Qing Long occupies Hai, Tian Kong occupies Zi, and Bai Hu occupies Chou. The characters 「Long Kong」 are marked above Hai and Zi. On the left, Liu He occupies You, Zhu Que occupies Shen, and Teng Snake occupies Wei. On the right, Tai Chang occupies Yin, and Xuan Wu occupies Mao. Below, the positions Wu and Si are paired with Nobleman and Heavenly Empress, and Chen is occupied by Tai Yin. Nobleman occupies Wu, and the twelve generals proceed in order. At Wei time, which is daytime, the daytime Nobleman is used. Zi general is added to Wei time, and the Heaven Plate advances five positions relative to the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem Xin is in the lodging palace at Xu, with Wu on Xu, which is the first lesson; Wu on Wu is the second lesson; Mao on Wu is the third lesson; and Chou on Wu is the fourth lesson. The four upper deities, Mao, Shen, Shen, and Chou, are successively occupied by Xuan Wu, Zhu Que, Zhu Que, and Bai Hu. The three transmissions: the first transmission, Mao, is the wife's wealth爻, occupied by Xuan Wu; the middle transmission, Shen, is the brother's爻, with the hidden stem being Ji, occupied by Zhu Que; the final transmission, Chou, is the parent's爻, with the hidden stem being Ji, occupied by Bai Hu, and Chou is exactly the tomb deity of the day stem Xin.
Shao Yanhe said: In this lesson, the spirit of the day branch comes to the day stem and is instead controlled by the day stem, which is called the "赘婿" lesson. The year stem enters the house position and controls the house, and the house then comes to the person and is controlled by the person. Based on this, it is determined that within six years the family will have the house demolished and the place will finally become a graveyard, with a respected elder buried there. If it does not happen within six years, the family will split apart, the household will scatter, and there will be disturbances from outsiders or a person who has returned to secular life, thus causing the family to break down.
The final transmission's Chou is theTomb Spirit of Xin day, and it is located on the Tai Su (sovereign year) Shen. The Tai Su is buried by it, thus turning to attack the dwelling. The dwelling is attacked and then returns to attack the day stem, which in turn attacks it. The dwelling cannot be retained, so how can the house stand? Furthermore, from the self, three transmissions are issued and enter the dwelling. The dwelling again meets the Tai Su, and on the Tai Su there is also theTomb Spirit Chou of the current day. The Chou earth can generate Shen metal, which is the respected elder of Shen metal. The庚 and 辛 metals are also buried in Chou, so this is the place where the respected elder is buried. The number of Mao is six, so it is determined that it will not last for six years. Shen governs monks, and both Xin and Shen belong to the metal category, so this indicates a monk who has left the religious life. Whether it is Yiyou meeting Xinmao or Xinyou meeting Yiyou, both indicate the image of a monk who has left the religious life. Yi represents a monk, and Xin represents a monastery. The presence of Xuanwu on Mao indicates that the family will split apart.
Later in the year Guichou, his uncle died, and they buried him on this piece of land. The uncle had three sons, one of whom became a monk and has now returned to secular life, coming back to divide the family property. The teacher Ye refused to comply, and the matter escalated to the authorities. The court ruled that all the sons should share the property, including the uncle's branch, making a total of five sons, and the property was divided into six parts, with the teacher Ye receiving only one part. From Wushen to Guichou was exactly six years. Without the arrival of the year's master (too shi) causing a conflict within the house, such a ruling could not have happened. That year, one son and one daughter in the family also died, which was also due to the year's master (too shi) causing a conflict within the house. As for the dispute reaching the authorities, it was also caused by the year's master (too shi) causing a conflict within the house. The卯 (mao) sign represents monks, and the申 (shen) sign also represents monks. The申 (shen) and辛 (xin) are of the same type. Now, someone returning from outside to the house signifies a monk returning to secular life. The乙 (yi) sign also represents monks, and辛 (xin) represents a monastery. The申 (shen) is the elder brother of辛 (xin).
On the Xinmao day, with the You zodiac as the general and the Chen hour, a monk used divination to find a lost degree certificate (case of Fang Ben's divination).

On the Xinmao day of the third month, the class was started by adding You as the general and using the Chen hour. A monk came to consult about a lost degree certificate. The degree certificate is an official document issued to monks and Taoists, which is necessary for them to become ordained and to be exempt from taxes and corvée labor. Losing it is a very serious matter. This entry is also found in both the "Fang Ben Zhan An" and the "Zhang Ben Zhan An."

The lesson pattern is the same as the previous example. The hour is Chen (Dragon) with You (Rooster) as the general. The Heaven Plate is five positions ahead of the Earth Plate: Gou Chen (Hook Star) is on Xu (Dog), Qing Long (Azure Dragon) is on Hai (Pig), Tian Kong (Heavenly Void) is on Zi (Rat), Bai Hu (White Tiger) is on Chou (Ox), Tai Chang (Divine Official) is on Yin (Tiger), Xuan Wu (Black Tortoise) is on Mao (Rabbit), Tai Yin (Divine Yin) is on Chen (Dragon), Tian Hou (Heavenly Empress) is on Si (Snake), Gui Ren (Nobleman) is on Wu (Horse), Teng Snake is on Wei (Goat), Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird) is on Shen (Monkey), and Liu He (Six Harmonies) is on You (Rooster). The four lessons are Xin (Metal) residing on Xu (Dog), Xu (Dog) has Mao (Rabbit), Mao (Rabbit) has Shen (Monkey), and the day branch Mao (Rabbit) has Shen (Monkey), which in turn has Chou (Ox). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Mao (Rabbit), representing the wife's wealth爻, borne by Xuan Wu (Black Tortoise); the middle transmission is Shen (Monkey), representing the brother's wealth爻, borne by Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird); and the final transmission is Chou (Ox), representing the parent's wealth爻, borne by Bai Hu (White Tiger). When divining about lost items, Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird) is the class god associated with documents and evidence, while Xuan Wu (Black Tortoise) is theInauspicious General associated with theft. Both are present in this lesson, which is the key point for the following interpretation.
Shao Yanhe said: The degree certificate was stolen by a relative and then burned; the thief had a limp and missing fingers. Since the degree certificate is associated with the Vermilion Bird, and the monkey (申) is the master of monks, which refers to the owner himself; the Black Tortoise is associated with the rabbit (卯), and the rabbit combines with the dog (戌) which is the day of辛, so it is determined to be a relative; the metal of辛 overcomes the wood of卯, so the rabbit stole the thing. Therefore, it is known that the cousin stole it, and saying he has problems with his hands and feet is not wrong.
On the Xinmao day, with the亥 (Hai) hour and the辰 (Chen) time, Zhang Jinian divined about official rank (Tuo's divination case).

In the year Wuyin of the Chongzhen era, second lunar month (with the month builder in Mao), on the day Xinmao, the class of the hour was set with Hai general added to Chen hour. Zhang Tan Gong, who had newly been promoted to a high official position, whose name was Jinyan and Tan Gong was his courtesy name, came to consult about his official career. "Chongzheng" refers to Chongzhen, a term used in Qing editions to avoid direct mention. This entry is taken from the "Guo Shi Zhan An."

The Heaven Plate is arranged with "Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao" paired with "Kong, Baihu, Tai Chang, Xuanwu," meaning Tian Kong is on Zi, Baihu on Chou, Tai Chang on Yin, and Xuanwu on Mao. On the left, Qinglong is on Hai and Gou Chen on Xu; on the right, Tai Yin is on Chen and Tianhou on Si. Below, "You, Shen, Wei, Wu" are paired with "He, Zhuqiao, Tengshe, Guiren," meaning Liuhe is on You, Zhuqiao on Shen, Tengshe on Wei, and Guiren on Wu. Since Guiren is on Wu and the twelve generals proceed in order, Chen hour belongs to the day, so the day Guiren is used. Hai general is added to Chen hour, and the Heaven Plate is seven positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem Xin is in the lodging palace on Xu, and Xu is on Si, making the first lesson; Si is on Zi, making the second lesson; the Day Branch Mao is on Xu, making the third lesson; and Xu is on Si again, making the fourth lesson. The four upper deities are Si, Zi, Xu, and Si, which are respectively occupied by Tianhou, Tiankong, Gouchen, and Tianhou. The three transmissions are as follows: the first transmission is Xu, representing the parents' yao, with the hidden stem being Bing, occupying Gouchen; the middle transmission is Si, representing the official ghost yao, with the hidden stem being Ji, occupying Tianhou; the final transmission is Zi, representing the son yao, with the hidden stem being Wu, occupying Tiankong. On Xin Mao day, Wu and Wei are empty, so the Wu that is occupied by Guiren is the empty deity of the ten days. The Earth Plate's Hai position is the heaven gate, and directly above it is the Wu that is occupied by Guiren, which is what is referred to as "Guiren ascends the heaven gate."
Guo Yuqing said: His natal chart shows "Nobleman Ascends the Heavenly Gate" — the Earth Plate position at Hai is the Heavenly Gate, and on top of it is the Nobleman at Wu; his year of movement also has the Azure Dragon riding the Month General at Hai. Based on these two factors, I concluded he would certainly obtain a position in the Han Yuan Qinghua (Imperial Academy). Zhang Gong was modest and did not believe it himself, but later he ended up in the Ministry of Household. I carefully examined the Lesson Pattern, and the only thing I was concerned about was the Nobleman at Wu falling into the旬空 (decade void). However, the Month General acting as the Azure Dragon in the year of movement is an excellent omen. How could such a rare and favorable chart ultimately fail? In April, I heard that the court had issued an order for general appointments, and I was very happy, saying: As long as it reaches May, the character Wu will be filled, and Tan Gong entering the Hanlin Academy will have no doubts. Later, it indeed came true as predicted.
It's truly amazing! I have studied the Six壬 system for a long time, yet I never expected its profound mysteries to be so intricate. There has never been such an extraordinary opportunity in previous examinations, and this can truly be called "the nobleman ascending to the heavenly gate." This matter will surely come to fruition in May, because we have to wait until the character "wu" (午) is fully established, allowing the nobleman at the heavenly gate to be realized in reality. Otherwise, that nobleman would remain merely a hollow existence. The first transmission is戌, which is the heavenly joy deity, but it also carries Gou Chen, indicating an image of stagnation and delay. Only when it meets the character "yin" (寅) of the heavenly stem in May to form a triple harmony will it transform into the official star. At the time I was divining the lesson, I was not aware of this profound mystery.
Cheng Shuxun remarks: In this lesson, the three transmissions form a circular pattern from beginning to end. The official ghost star is also located on the day stem, which itself is a favorable omen. This is not only due to the "noble ascending the heavenly gate" combined with the native's star and the month general's star riding the azure dragon and affecting the year's star, but also because in May when fire is strong, the official star is in command, so the effect should manifest at that time.
On the Xinmao day, with Chou as the general and Si as the hour, Ye Baling divined about practicing medicine (捷要).

In the year of Wushen, during the twelfth lunar month, on the day of Xinmao, the class was cast by adding Chou to the time of Si. The person seeking divination is Ye Baling, born in the year of Guihai, aged forty-six, consulting about his livelihood as a physician. This entry appears in both the "Jieyao" and "Koujian." The divination chart and interpretation are as follows.
On Xinmao day, Ye Balang divined about practicing medicine (Quick Essentials, Oral Mirror).

This is a lesson pattern diagram written out as a flat circle. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches each associated with a heavenly general: Chou is accompanied by the Azure Dragon, Yin by Gou Chen, Mao by Liu He, Chen by Vermilion Bird, Si by Teng Snake, Wu by Nobleman, Wei by Heavenly Empress, Shen by Tai Yin, You by Black Tortoise, Xu by Tai Chang, Hai by White Tiger, and Zi by Tian Kong. The Nobleman is located on Wu, and the twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order from there. The middle section shows the four lessons, counted from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Xin (with its lodging palace in Xu) with Wu, which is accompanied by Nobleman; the second lesson has Wu with Yin, which is accompanied by Gou Chen; the third lesson has the day branch Mao with Hai, which is accompanied by White Tiger; the fourth lesson has Hai with Wei, which is accompanied by Heavenly Empress. The right section shows the three transmissions: the first transmission is Wei, representing the parents' yao, accompanied by Heavenly Empress, with the character 'kong' indicating it falls in the旬空; the middle transmission is Xin Mao, representing the wife's wealth yao, accompanied by Liu He; the final transmission is Ding Hai, representing the children's yao, accompanied by White Tiger. The day stem Xin belongs to the Jiashen decade, with the旬空 on Wu and Wei. The three transmissions, Hai, Mao, and Wei, form a triple harmony of wood, and since wood is the wealth of metal, the text says 'full circle of wealth'.
Shao Yanhe said: When the day stem is Xin metal and the three transmissions form a wood pattern, the whole chart is full of wealth signs, but unfortunately the wu fire comes in and turns these wealth signs into a bad atmosphere. Wood in the twelve growths is exactly "dead" at wu; and since wu is occupied by the nobleman, this makes it unsuitable for treating patients who are of nobleman's class. Fortunately, the heavenly physician is in the middle transmission and the earthly physician is in the final transmission, which can control the wu fire. Plus the nobleman is in charge, so those who come to consult him are people in critical condition. For example, a woman suffering from vomiting after eating should be treated by addressing her liver rather than her stomach; a child who has caught a wind illness should be treated by unblocking the water organs and promoting urination, rather than treating the wind directly. Following this method of treatment will be effective. Your house happens to have a beast's head facing east, and the house opposite also has a beast's head facing it, which is in opposition. The meaning of the phrase "when they touch each other, many people pass through" is unclear, and it is suspected that there is an error in the text. Therefore, money cannot enter the house. Ye Bala's medical practice has never been very prosperous; he is effective in treating children, but not when treating wealthy families. His ancestors, because there was a broken hill opposite, installed a beast's head on the roof to suppress it. The family in the northwest also did the same, facing directly opposite Ye's house.
The basis for determining the head of the beast is: the White Tiger is riding on亥 and is added on the day branch卯 (third lesson), which is the head of the beast on his own house; and on the original position of亥's palace, there is also未 (fourth lesson), the White Tiger in night divination is here, which is the head of the beast on the neighbor's house to the northwest. Hearing Mr. Shao's words, Ye Baling removed the head of the beast. On the seventh day of the first lunar month the next year, Yang family's seventh little daughter suffered from vomiting, having previously consulted dozens of doctors for a whole year without any effect. On that day, they invited Ye to see her. Ye recalled Mr. Shao's words and treated her according to the liver meridian, and it immediately showed effect, earning him more than twenty strings of cash as consultation fee. On the eighteenth day of the third lunar month, Xu Canyi's grandson, who was six years old, had a stroke for four or five days, closed his eyes and did not move at all. They invited Ye to see him. Ye again recalled Mr. Shao's words and used purgative medicine to relieve his water organs. After six or seven days, the child could move around and completely recovered from the danger.
This time he gained over three hundred strings of money, and from then on his medical practice became widely known. The reasoning is as follows: the Heavenly Empress is on the亥 branch, and the卯 branch overcomes the未 branch, which in turn overcomes the亥 branch, thus indicating a case of regurgitation. The root of the problem lies in the overcoming by卯, which belongs to the liver meridian, so the treatment should focus on the liver. The亥 branch represents a young son; although the water of亥 nourishes wood, it does not form a complete cycle, leading to wind. Therefore, by promoting the flow of water, the wind will naturally subside. The未 branch is the stomach of the亥 branch, which is overturned and located below, hence the condition is called regurgitation. Another interpretation suggests that the亥 is covered by the卯 below, thus causing regurgitation. Ai Han notes: the未 is not being born from the亥, so the explanation that the亥 is covered by the卯 is correct. The three transmissions form a wood cycle, and wood overcomes earth, so treating the wood rather than the earth is appropriate. On a辛 day, the亥 represents a young son, and the亥 is placed on the卯. The number of the卯 is six, so the child is six years old. The water of the亥 nourishes wood, and wood represents wind, so the treatment should focus on the water organ rather than the wind wood. The White Tiger is on the亥, so it is better to let it flow smoothly, hence the use of a purging method is recommended.
The method for calculating Tianyi and Diyi is: take the second branch before the Tai sui, the month builder, the day branch, and the time branch to determine Tianyi. The branch that is opposite to Tianyi is called Diyi. For the Diyi on the day, start from the Zi position and count twelve branches in order. In this case: the fire of Wu is overcoming the metal of Xin day stem, and the wood of Yin and Mao, which are the wealth for the day stem, are consumed by the fire of Wu. The亥 branch is occupied by the White Tiger, and since亥 and亥 are self-punishing, it also injures the nobleman on the Wu branch. The Wei branch is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, representing a woman, and Wei also represents the stomach. The wood of Mao is overcoming Wei, which suppresses the wood pattern, thus indicating a disorder of the stomach. Mao represents the liver, so treating the liver can prevent injury to the stomach. Liu He represents a child.
On Xinmao day, Mr. Lin consulted about official litigation (from "Oral Mirror" and "Fang Ben Case Records").
In the year of Wushen, seventh lunar month, on the day of Xinmao, the month general is Wu (Shengguang), placed on the hour of Xu to cast the divination. The questioner is a man named Lin, born in the year of Bingchen, who is fifty-three years old this year. He is asking about a legal case. This case is recorded in the book "Koujian" and the version of "Zhan'an" by Fang.
The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Chou is accompanied by Teng Snake, Yin by Nobleman, Mao by Heavenly Empress, Chen by Tai Yin, Si by Black Tortoise, Wu by Tai Chang, Wei by White Tiger, Shen by Tian Kong, You by Azure Dragon, Xu by Gou Chen, Hai by Liu He, and Zi by Vermilion Bird. The Nobleman is located on Yin, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order from there. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, on the day stem Xin (which is in Xu), shows Wu accompanied by Tai Chang; the second lesson, on Wu, shows Yin accompanied by Nobleman; the third lesson, on the day branch Mao, shows Hai accompanied by Liu He; the fourth lesson, on Hai, shows Wei (the heavenly general for this position is originally written as 'Chen' meaning Gou Chen, which conflicts with the heavenly generals marked as White Tiger in the outer circle and the three transmissions, so it is likely an error in the printed text). The three transmissions: the first transmission is Wei, representing the parent爻, accompanied by White Tiger, and Wei is in the旬空; the second transmission is Xin Mao, representing the wife and wealth爻, accompanied by Heavenly Empress; the third transmission is Ding Hai, representing the son and grandson爻, accompanied by Liu He. The day Xin Mao belongs to the Jiashen decade, and both Wu and Wei are in the旬空, so there is a later statement saying 'Wu is empty and has no blade'. The three transmissions, Hai, Mao, and Wei, still form the Triple Harmony of wood.
Shao Yanhe said: This lawsuit indicates that someone in mourning will take the lead in the dispute and involve the younger members of the family, thus causing a large group to be involved. The night nobleman is placed on the position of the day nobleman, so it is suitable to privately seek help and make arrangements to resolve the matter. The three transmissions of wealth divination are too strong, turning into officials that harm me; to conclude this matter, one must compensate the younger ones with some money, and the dispute will then naturally stop. Although the other side has many people, they will not be able to achieve anything. Later it indeed turned out to be the case: Lin family had three brothers and four uncles and cousins. When they divided the property, the younger brothers were still young and the division was unequal. Later the eldest brother died, and his wife along with the younger brothers claimed that the division was unfair, and the uncles and cousins also supported them.
The reasoning is that the three transmissions form a wood situation that generates the fire of the day stem's wu (午), which then turns back torestrain the xin (辛) metal day stem. The person being divined also has a yin (寅) wood in their age, which is the year they are going through. Although wu fire is the nobleman (贵人) for xin day stem and is closely related to the person, it is also the official ghost thatrestrain the person. The yin wood further nourishes this ghost, thus causing trouble. It is said that supplementing the young can stop the matter because the house (day branch side) has hai (亥) water, which can control the wu fire. Moreover, all the wood in the three transmissions are born in hai. Whether the matter stops or not depends entirely on the position of hai. Therefore, supplementing the young side is necessary to resolve the matter. Later, they indeed gave财物 to the younger brother, and everyone dispersed.
There is another interpretation which says: the day stem is joined by Tai Chang, which signifies mourning for parents, so the case involves someone in mourning. Wu also represents a woman, so this disturbance was initiated by the sister-in-law. The three transmissions produce official spirits, indicating a disturbance that affects many people. Yin is placed over Wu, with two noblemen crossing each other, suggesting it is appropriate to go to the official or nobleman's place to report. The statement 'carrying a minor' is because亥 water is joined by Liu He, which directly refers to the younger generation. Wu falls in the empty term, lacking the fierce aspect of Yangren, so there is no need to compensate the woman; the one that can control Wu is亥, so compensating the young son is sufficient.
On Xinmao day, Su Xiaolian divined about the imperial examination (Tuo's divination case).
In the Dingchou year, second month, twenty-seventh day, Xinmao day, the "Hai" (Dengming) was used as the Month General, placed on the Xinmao day to cast the divination. The person seeking the divination was Su Zuyin, a juren (candidate for the imperial examination) from Chongshu. He was asking whether he would pass the current imperial examination. This case is from Guo's "Divination Cases."
The lesson pattern is exactly the same as the previous case. The outer circle: Chou is multiplied by Teng Snake, Yin is multiplied by Nobleman, Mao is multiplied by Heavenly Empress, Chen is multiplied by Tai Yin, Si is multiplied by Black Tortoise, Wu is multiplied by Tai Chang, Wei is multiplied by White Tiger, Shen is multiplied by Tian Kong, You is multiplied by Azure Dragon, Xu is multiplied by Gou Chen, Hai is multiplied by Liu He, Zi is multiplied by Vermilion Bird. The four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem Xin has Wu multiplied by Tai Chang; Wu has Yin multiplied by Nobleman; the day branch Mao has Hai multiplied by Liu He; Hai has Wei (the position of Heavenly General in the original diagram is marked as 'Chen', which does not match the White Tiger indicated in the outer circle and the three transmissions, so this is likely a carving error). The three transmissions: the first transmission Wei is the parent爻 multiplied by White Tiger and is in the旬空; the middle transmission Xin Mao is the wife and wealth爻 multiplied by Heavenly Empress; the final transmission Ding Hai is the son and grandson爻 multiplied by Liu He. The following statement by Guo Yuqing, "the ruler of the year is on the 太岁," refers to the 太岁 of Dingchou year, with Chou being exactly multiplied by Teng Snake.
Guo Yüqing said: The Nobleman is covering and pressing upon the Day Stem, and also approaching the year's position, which originally is a favorable omen; unfortunately it turns to attack the Day Stem, and falls in the empty period, with few Post-horse signs. The final transmission is the Ding spirit, a fickle deity. The main destiny also has the Tai Suai riding upon the Teng Snake. All these signs are very unfavorable. Later, he indeed did not pass the examination.
On Xinmao day, Li Si, an official, divined the loss of money and grain (case record).
On the Xinmao day in the tenth month, using 'Yin' (Gongcao) as the Month General, the calculation starts at the 'Si' hour. The person asking the question, Li Si, is seeking to determine the loss of money and grain. This case is from Fang Ben's 'Divination Cases'.

Flat lesson pattern chart. Outer circle twelve branches with their respective heavenly generals:寅 (Yin) is accompanied by Gou Chen, 卯 (Mao) by Liu He, 辰 (Chen) by Zhu Qu, 巳 (Si) by Teng She, 午 (Wu) by Guiren, 未 (Wei) by Tianhou, 申 (Shen) by Taiyin, 酉 (You) by Xuanwu, 戌 (Xu) by Taichang, 亥 (Hai) by Baishi, 子 (Zi) by Tiankong, 丑 (Chou) by Qinglong. Guiren is located on 午 (Wu), and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. Four lessons from right to left: first lesson, day stem Xin (with its root in Xu) has 未 (Wei) on it, 未 (Wei) is accompanied by Tianhou; second lesson, 未 (Wei) has 辰 (Chen) on it, 辰 (Chen) is accompanied by Zhu Qu; third lesson, day branch Mao has Zi on it, Zi is accompanied by Tiankong; fourth lesson, Zi has You on it, You is accompanied by Xuanwu. There is no instance of mutual control among the four lessons, which belongs to the "Mangxing Lesson". Three transmissions: first transmission is Wu Zi, a son爻 (yao) accompanied by Tiankong; second transmission is Wei, a parent爻 (yao) accompanied by Tianhou and marked as旬空 (xun kong); third transmission is again Wu Zi, a son爻 (yao) accompanied by Tiankong. The day Xin Mao is in the Jiashen decade, with xun kong on Wu and Wei, so the character 未 (Wei) is marked with "空" (kong).
Shao Yanhe said: On the day of Xinmao, the three transmissions do not go outward, but only circulate between the day stem and the day branch. The first transmission is the Zi of the day branch, the middle transmission is the Wei of the day stem, and the final transmission returns to the Zi of the day branch. Zi and Wei are mutually harmful, and it was originally favorable that the Wei earth could control the Zi water. However, since the Wei falls in the旬空, it cannot control, and the empty Kongwang is placed on the day stem, which itself indicates loss. Since the Wei is empty, it cannot generate the Xin metal, and the Xin metal instead goes to generate the Zi water of the day branch, forming a sign of depletion, so the thief could not be caught. However, the first transmission originates from the residence and the final transmission returns to the residence, indicating that the thief did not leave, and it was likely done by a family member as an inside accomplice. Later, it was indeed found out that it was the son of the eldest and second eldest brothers who stole and hid the items in the house, and they took them out three days later to use. This time, Li Si lost both money and grain.
In general, when divining about theft, if the three transmissions start from the day stem and return to the day stem, or start from the day branch and return to the day branch, it is not the work of outsiders. Moreover, in this Xinmao lesson, all three transmissions fall within the day stem and day branch. Only if the final transmission goes outside can one look for the thief outside. The diviner's age also falls on the卯 (day branch), which clearly indicates the thief is a family member.
On Xinmao day, Zhang Yigong divined about the date when the official document would arrive (case record of divination).
On the Xinmao day in the second lunar month, using 'Hai' (Dengming) as the Month General, the divination starts at the寅 hour. The person asking the question is Zhang Yigong, inquiring about the day on which the official document decided upon by the county office can be delivered. This case is from Fang Ben's 'Zhan An'.

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals:寅 is occupied by the Nobleman, 卯 by the Heavenly Empress, 辰 by Tai Yin, 巳 by the Black Tortoise, 午 by Tai Chang, 未 by the White Tiger, 申 by Tian Kong, 酉 by the Azure Dragon, 戌 by Gou Chen, 亥 by Liu He, 子 by the Vermilion Bird, and 丑 by Teng Snake. The Nobleman is located on 寅, and the heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, on the day stem 辛 (which is in 戌), shows 未, which is occupied by the White Tiger; the second lesson, on 未, shows 辰, which is occupied by Tai Yin; the third lesson, on the day branch 卯, shows 子, which is occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson, on 子, shows 酉, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon. There is no conflict between the upper and lower lessons, so it remains an昴星 lesson. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Wuzi, which is the grandson爻 occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the middle transmission is 未, which is the parent爻 occupied by the White Tiger and is in the旬空; the final transmission is again Wuzi, the grandson爻 occupied by the Vermilion Bird. The Vermilion Bird is on 子, which is also on the day branch 卯. This is the basis for the later statement that "documents will be established."
Shao Yanhe said: That official document will certainly arrive today -- and later it indeed came true. Because this is the昴 star lesson, on a卯 day with子 placed on卯, the Vermilion Bird is exactly at the position of the day branch, indicating that official documents will arrive immediately;子 and卯 also mutually accuse each other, indicating that it will come quickly; furthermore, all three transmissions fall on the day stem and day branch, naturally indicating that it will be delivered right away. The result was indeed as predicted.
