On the Guisi day of the Dingchou year, second month, with the Hai (Dengming) as the Month General, the class is started on the Mao hour. The person seeking the divination is Li Guangzhuo from Jiangyou (Jiangxi), asking about the examination hall for the imperial examination. This case is from Guo's "Divination Cases."

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the heavenly generals:寅 (Yin) with Gou Chen, 卯 (Mao) with Liu He, 辰 (Chen) with Zhu Que, 巳 (Si) with Teng Snake, 午 (Wu) with Guiren, 未 (Wei) with Tianhou, 申 (Shen) with Taiyin, 酉 (You) with Xuanwu, 戌 (Xu) with Taichang, 亥 (Hai) with Baihu, 子 (Zi) with Tiankong, 丑 (Chou) with Qinglong. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, day stem Gui (located on Chou) has You; the second lesson, You has Si; the third lesson, day branch Si has Chou; the fourth lesson, Chou has You. The heaven plate moves forward eight positions from the earth plate. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Si, representing the wife's wealth hexagram, riding on Guiren; the middle transmission is Chou, representing the official ghost hexagram, riding on Gou Chen; the final transmission is You, representing the parents' hexagram, riding on Taichang; Si, Chou, and You are in reverse order of the Si-You-Chou metal triad. It should be noted that the heavenly generals marked in the four lessons and three transmissions are exactly one position ahead of those on the outer circle. The four lessons and three transmissions are arranged according to Guiren riding on Si - on a癸 day, Guiren is on Si during the day, and at卯 time, which is also daytime, this is appropriate; however, the outer circle places Guiren on Wu, which seems to be an error of displacement. If Guiren is arranged in reverse from Si, then Mao rides Zhu Que, Chou rides Gou Chen, and You rides Taichang, which would align with what Guo Yucheng mentioned later: "the day stem's You hexagram clashes and controls the curtain Zhu Que."

Guo Yuqing said: In this lesson, the year stem has both the old age horse and the day horse, two kinds of post-horse, and the initiating transmission is also the month horse. There is also the day virtue and the nobleman, which originally form a favorable omen. Unfortunately, within the triple harmony, there is a bad influence, and it cannot form a golden formation to nourish the day stem. The酉 on the day stem also clashes and controls the curtain god Zhuque. The four lessons only have three positions and are not complete, forming an incomplete image. How can one expect to pass the examination?

Volume Four · Jiawu Day

On Jiawu day, a guest requested a divination (from the Guide).

In theRenwu year of the Chongzheng era (i.e., Chongzhen), on theJiawu day of the seventh month, the lesson was cast with「巳」(Taiyi) as the Month General, placed on the午 hour. At that time, a guest happened to arrive at the guesthouse on Gengzi Street. After seating himself, he asked Chen Gongxian to cast a divination. This case is recorded in the《Liu Ren Zhi Nan》.

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Chou is accompanied by the Nobleman, Yin by the Teng Snake, Mao by the Vermilion Bird, Chen by Liu He, Si by Gou Chen, Wu by the Azure Dragon, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by the White Tiger, You by Tai Chang, Xu by the Black Tortoise, Hai by Tai Yin, and Zi by the Heavenly Empress. On a day with the stem Jia, the Nobleman is at Chou during the day, and at the fifth hour, which is daytime, it matches, so the heavenly generals are arranged in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Jia (with its lodging palace at Yin) with Chou, which is accompanied by the Nobleman; the second lesson has Chou with Zi, which is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress; the third lesson has the day branch Wu with Si, which is accompanied by Gou Chen; the fourth lesson has Si with Chen, which is accompanied by Liu He. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Geng Zi, representing the parents' yao accompanied by the Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is Ji Hai, representing the parents' yao accompanied by Tai Yin; the final transmission is Wu Xu, representing the wife's wealth yao accompanied by the Black Tortoise. In the year of Ren Wu, the year's stem is at Wu, and the year's breaking is at Zi. However, Zi is exactly the first transmission that initiates the sequence. The three transmissions, Zi, Hai, and Xu, each step backward, which is referred to as 'the lesson transmission retreats'.

Chen Gongxian said: You are a person who has passed the imperial examination, either surnamed Tian or Wang; however, there is a matter involving the court. Because the nobleman is present in the chart, it must be a person who has passed the examination; yet the nobleman is overcome by the day stem, the year's broken star is the initiating transmission, and the course of the transmissions is continuously retreating and consuming, so there will be an offense against the court. Fortunately, the Heavenly Empress and Tai Yin in the first and middle transmissions act as gods of mercy and pardon, so there will not be a great calamity. Later it was known that this guest was Wang Chengzeng, a Jiaxu graduate, who was arrested for losing the city, and was only released after the bandits broke into Yanjing.

Divination for a day of Jiawu regarding a traveler (Middle Yellow Meridian)

In the year of Dinghai, during the 11th lunar month, on the day of Jiawu, using 'Chou' (Daji) as the Month General, the course is started at the hour of Yin. The divination is for a person who is away from home. The person was born in the year of Jiayin and is thirty-four years old this year. This case is from the Zhonghuang Jing.

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Wei is accompanied by the Nobleman, Shen by the Heavenly Empress, You by Tai Yin, Xu by the Black Tortoise, Hai by Tai Chang, Zi by the White Tiger, Chou by Tian Kong, Yin by the Azure Dragon, Mao by Gou Chen, Chen by Liu He, Si by the Vermilion Bird, and Wu by the Teng Snake. On the first day, the Nobleman is on Wei, and at the寅 hour, which is night, it matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Jia (located in寅) with Chou on top, Chou accompanied by Tian Kong; the second lesson has Chou with Zi on top, Zi accompanied by the White Tiger; the third lesson has the day branch Wu with Si on top, Si accompanied by the Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson has Si with Chen on top, Chen accompanied by Liu He. The earthly spirits of the four lessons are the same as in the previous case, but with a different set of heavenly generals. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Geng Zi, representing the parent's yao accompanied by the White Tiger; the middle transmission is Ji Hai, representing the parent's yao accompanied by Tai Chang; the final transmission is Wu Xu, representing the wife's wealth yao accompanied by the Black Tortoise. The person being consulted is thirty-four years old, with the year of birth on Hai, which is located on Zi. The following calculations of direction, return time, and distance all start from this position.

The statement says: The person's age of thirty-four falls on the亥 (Hai) position, which is located on the子 (Zi) position. Therefore, it is known that this person is traveling to the north, but must return from the northwest. Why? According to the text: use the position of the Earth Plate where the year stem is located as the direction of departure, and use the spirit associated with the year stem as the direction of return. Therefore, the person goes from the north (Zi) and returns from the northwest. If asking about wealth, this person has no money: the wealth hexagram is sitting on Tian Kong, and the wealth in the final transmission and the year stem is taken by Xuan Wu. Therefore, there is no wealth. If asking if there is illness while away, the person is not sick, because the White Tiger is not present to harm the position where the year stem is located. If asking about the distance of the journey, the person will return after traveling two thousand and twenty li. The calculation is to multiply the upper and lower positions of the year stem: the number for Hai is four, the number for Zi is nine, four times nine is thirty-six; then add the hidden stem 乙 (Yi) which is transformed into 丙 (Bing), whose number is seven, making a total of fifty-one. For a long journey, one 'ten' is counted as 'hundred', resulting in five hundred and eleven li. Since Hai and Zi belong to water and are strong in winter, they should be doubled, resulting in one thousand and twenty li, and then add one thousand, resulting in two thousand and twenty li (this calculation seems to have some missing parts). If asking if there are obstacles on the way, the answer is no; because neither the year stem nor the day stem show signs of obstruction, so there are no obstacles.

If the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the gate show the presence of the Black Tortoise, it indicates obstruction from thieves or flooding rivers; if they show the presence of Liu He, Tai Yin, or Heavenly Empress, it indicates obstruction from women; if they show the presence of the Azure Dragon, it indicates obstruction from wealth; if they show the presence of the Nobleman, it indicates obstruction from officials; if they show the presence of Tai Chang, it indicates delay due to drinking and feasting. When asked which month and day to return home, the answer is to return home in the second month of the Wuzi year; if not in the second month, then certainly in the fourth month. This is because the Heavenly Horse of the eleventh month is located on the卯 (Mao) position, which is the gate, so the second month, whose month builder is Mao, will have news; the reason for saying the fourth month is because the game god of the eleventh month is located on the巳 (Si) position, which is active, so it indicates returning home in the fourth month—the month builder of the fourth month is Si.

On the Jiawu day in the tenth month, using 'Yin' (Gongcao) as the Month General, the calculation starts at the 'Chou' hour. The divination is to determine who is knocking at the door. This case is from Zhang Ben's "Divination Cases."

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Wei (丑) is occupied by the Nobleman, Shen (申) by the Heavenly Empress, You (酉) by Tai Yin, Xu (戌) by Black Tortoise, Hai (亥) by Tai Chang, Zi (子) by White Tiger, Chou (丑) by Tian Kong, Yin (寅) by Azure Dragon, Mao (卯) by Gou Chen, Chen (辰) by Liu He, Si (巳) by Vermilion Bird, and Wu (午) by Teng Snake. On the day of Jiawu, the Nobleman is at Wei, which belongs to the hour of Chou, which is night, thus it matches. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jiā (with its lodging palace at Yin) has Mao, which is occupied by Gou Chen; the second lesson, Mao has Chen, which is occupied by Liu He; the third lesson, the day branch Wu has Wei, which is occupied by the Nobleman; the fourth lesson, Wei has Shen, which is occupied by the Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Chen, representing the wife's wealth爻, occupied by Liu He; the middle transmission is Si, representing the son's fortune爻, occupied by Vermilion Bird; the final transmission is Jiawu, representing the son's fortune爻, occupied by Teng Snake. The symbols '◎' on Chen and Si indicate the empty period. The day is Jiawu, which belongs to the Jiawu decade, and the empty period is on Chen and Si. The Mao on the day stem is accompanied by Yangren and occupied by Gou Chen, which serves as the basis for the conclusion that the person coming is a monk and that someone will arrest him.

Master Liu Rixin pointed at a monk and said: This is the one coming to catch you. Because the stem Jia has the branch Mao, which is joined by Yangren and is too strong. The branch Mao represents a monk, and Gou Chen is also present above it. However, Gou Chen belongs to earth, which is overcome by wood, so there is no harm. The branch Wei has the branch Shen, and Shen is riding on the Heavenly Empress. Jia and Ji are not a proper match, and it is accompanied by the door of deceit, indicating that this monk had committed rape. The hidden spirit of the house, Shen, comes to overcome Jia, showing that the people in the house cannot tolerate him, and they reject him back, thus exposing him. Mao overcomes Chen, and Chen is wealth. Jia also overcomes Chen, indicating that he stole silver from his master and ran away. Chen is numbered five, and Wu is numbered nine, together making a total of one hundred and forty taels of silver. A man named Wang hid him in his house. At that time, indeed, people came to search for him. Master Liu advised him to go south, where he could escape by following a young woman, and to go to the northern river to survive — because the Middle Transmission's Si is riding on the Vermilion Bird, which is a sign of rising up. Indeed, he ran to the stream and met a young woman washing vegetables. The young woman ran away when she saw the monk approaching. The monk followed her, and indeed escaped south. The young woman is Si; the advantage of going to the northern river is because water can nourish Jia wood.

On Jiawu day, the official in charge of education divined about seeking favor from the superior (as recorded in the case files and oral interpretations).

In the year Jiyou of the Jianyan era, on the day Jiawu of the tenth lunar month, the class of the day is Jiawu. The month general is Xinyou (Gongcao, Yin), placed on the hour Wu. The person consulting the divination is a school official born in the year Xinyou, aged forty-nine that year, asking about visiting a nobleman. This case is found in the Fang Ben's "Zhan An" and the "Kou Jian."

On the first day of the Jiawu month, the Nobleman is in Wei, and at the Wu hour, which is night time, it matches, so the heavenly generals are arranged in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jia (with its lodging palace in Yin) has Wu, which is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress; the second lesson, Wu has Xu, which is accompanied by Liu He; the third lesson, the day branch Wu has Xu, which is accompanied by Liu He; the fourth lesson, Xu has Yin, which is accompanied by the White Tiger. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Renyin, a brother's yao accompanied by the White Tiger; the middle transmission is Jiawu, a son's yao accompanied by the Heavenly Empress; the final transmission is Wuxu, a wife's wealth yao accompanied by Liu He. Yin, Wu, and Xu form a triple harmony fire formation, fire is generated by Jia wood, forming a complete image of stealing energy. The lesson is named "Inflaming Ascending."

Shao Yanhe said: If your elder brother wants to follow the right path, he should not go see him; if he is willing to take the wrong path, going to see him is not a problem. Ai Han said: These four sentences should have errors. Yin, Wu, and Xu form a fire triad, gathering together to form a reckless group. Heavenly Empress and Liu He are not upright deities, but represent harmful friends, leading to eventual mutual complaints and accusations. On a Jia day, forming a fire trigram brings twelve parts of stolen energy. The day branch also consumes me, resulting in great expenses. Your elder brother may gain something, but he will take money with his left hand and give it to a prostitute with his right. If the authorities find out, they will look down on him and no longer give him favors. Guan Xuezheng laughed and said: Yang Fu Yin has sent a letter, how could there be no benefits? So he went. Yang Fu Yin was very happy and gave him generous gifts. However, Guan Xuezheng eventually ended up in a brothel. When Yang Fu Yin found out, he said: I have taken care of you in many ways, hoping you would use it to support your family. You behaving like this, my kindness has been in vain. From then on, he no longer trusted him and only gave him some money to send him back.

I consider that this is the class of the fire lesson, falling on Jia day, which is inherently unfavorable; there is also the fire of Wu to consume and drain the Jia wood. The Heavenly Empress and Liu He are not proper deities, indicating being led astray by wine, women, and deceit. The four lessons are incomplete and insufficient, so even with substantial capital there will be loss, and how much more so if one goes with nothing at all?

Divination for Jiawu Day: Bear General's Achievements (Guide)

In the Renwu year of the Chongzheng era, on the Jiawu day of the twelfth lunar month, the lesson was cast with 'Zi' (Shenhou) as the Month General, placed on the 'Wei' hour, to inquire about the official rank of Xiong Sima. This case is from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nuan".

On a Jiawu day, the Nobleman is at Chou in the daytime divination, and the time of Wei is part of the daytime, so it matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jiā (with its lodging palace at Yin) has Wu, which is accompanied by Tian Kong; the second lesson, Wu has Zi, which is accompanied by Teng Snake; the third lesson, the day branch Wu has Hai, which is accompanied by Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson, Hai has Chen, which is accompanied by Black Tortoise. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Gengzi, representing the parents' yao accompanied by Teng Snake, the middle transmission is Si, representing the sons' yao accompanied by Tai Chang, and the final transmission is Wuxu, representing the wife's wealth yao accompanied by Liu He. In the Renwu year, the heavenly stem is at Wu, and the year's breaking point is at Zi. Therefore, the first transmission Gengzi is the year's breaking point. The middle transmission Si is in the Jiawu decade and should be empty, but it is still marked as Yisi in the diagram, which does not conform to the example of an empty transmission. Therefore, it is retained as it is.

Chen Gongxian said: A general named Xiong Tan Shi from Nanchang in Jiangxi, because of urgent military news from Hebei, urgently hired me to go to Jinling to cast a divination for him. Xiong's official position is not a long-term one; he must definitely resign in the early autumn of next year. Because the first transmission is the year's destruction and it fights against the day stem internally, and his own dragon and post-horse are also in conflict with the lower, he will certainly cause trouble because of the prime minister's governance, and the upper authorities are dissatisfied with him. There will be a memorial from Yanjing, and he himself will also request to resign. Moreover, the Dipper mansion is in the position of the day, and the nobleman is above the day stem, forming the image of 'looking up to a hill and looking down on an enemy'. The day stem is in the grave and the day branch is in the extreme, all of which are unfavorable. Fortunately, the odd instruments and the heavenly pardon are initiating the transmission, and the Vermilion Bird is also acting as the benevolent deity of imperial edicts, so there will certainly be a good imperial decree allowing him to return home. Later events indeed confirmed the prediction.

On Jiawu day, Feng Ganban divined about his future prospects (Zhang Ben divination case)

In the year Jiyou, first lunar month, on the day Jiawu, using 'Zi' (Shenhou) as the Month General, the lesson is cast starting from the hour Wu. The person seeking the divination is Feng Ganban, born on the 17th day of the eighth lunar month in the year Dingmao at the hour Chen. The case is from Zhang Ben's "Divination Cases."

The flattened lesson pattern diagram. The outer circle shows the earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Chou is occupied by the Nobleman, Yin by the Heavenly Empress, Mao by Tai Yin, Chen by Black Tortoise, Si by Tai Chang, Wu by White Tiger, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by Azure Dragon, You by Gou Chen, Xu by Liu He, Hai by Vermilion Bird, and Zi by Teng Snake. On a day with the day stem Jia, the Nobleman is at Chou in the daytime divination, and the time of Wu is during the day, which matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jia (with its lodging palace at Yin) has Shen, which is occupied by Azure Dragon; the second lesson, Shen has Yin, which is occupied by the Heavenly Empress; the third lesson, the day branch Wu has Zi, which is occupied by Teng Snake; the fourth lesson, Zi has Wu, which is occupied by White Tiger. The positions of the heaven plate and the earth plate are all in opposition, making it a reverse lesson. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Renyin, a brother's yao occupied by the Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is Bingshen, an official ghost yao occupied by Azure Dragon; the final transmission is again Renyin, a brother's yao occupied by the Heavenly Empress. Shen is the place where Jia wood is exhausted, and the opposition between Yin and Shen leads to the explanation later that 'virtue is cut off and fortune is lost' and 'the post-horse is running rapidly on the day'.

Shao Yanhe said: In this case, the virtue god is in the state of being cut off, and the禄 god is lost. The family is ruled by a woman, and both the day stem and day branch are injured. The disease symbol is also present on the self, so there will be worries of paralysis and illness soon. The life qi god is riding the Teng Snake and entering the house position, indicating a son will be born. After seeing this son, the illness will come, so one must take care and avoid indulgence in lust. In the year of Jiazi, the illness will be especially severe. The house will become a stream after eighteen years. Later events were as follows: Feng Mou took up the position of official in the Transport Department for three years. After one year in office, he suffered a stroke and became paralyzed and unable to move. The cause was that in the year of Renzi, he had a son and celebrated excessively by drinking, which led to the stroke. After being relieved of his post and returning home, the cost of food alone reached more than two thousand taels. Although he was bedridden, his appetite doubled. In the year of Jiazi, a great flood occurred, and the house was destroyed by water, indeed turning into a stream.

On Jiawu day, a person consulted about travel (Song edition Shao case).

Another person born in the year of Dingsi, who is now fifty years old, also asked about travel and received the same divination. This case is recorded in the Song edition of the Shao Case.

The lesson pattern is exactly the same as the previous case. Outer circle: Chou is occupied by the Nobleman, Yin is occupied by the Heavenly Empress, Mao is occupied by Tai Yin, Chen is occupied by Black Tortoise, Si is occupied by Tai Chang, Wu is occupied by White Tiger, Wei is occupied by Tian Kong, Shen is occupied by Azure Dragon, You is occupied by Gou Chen, Xu is occupied by Liu He, Hai is occupied by Vermilion Bird, and Zi is occupied by Teng Snake. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the Day Stem Jia (located in Yin) has Shen occupying it with Azure Dragon; Shen has Yin occupying it with Heavenly Empress; the Day Branch Wu has Zi occupying it with Teng Snake; and Zi has Wu occupying it with White Tiger. The heavens and earth discs are in constant opposition, which is still a case of reverse repetition. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Renyin, a brother's yao occupied by Heavenly Empress; the middle transmission is Bingshen, an official ghost yao occupied by Azure Dragon; and the final transmission is again Renyin, a brother's yao occupied by Heavenly Empress. Both Yin and Shen are places of the post-horse and they oppose each other. Since the divination is about travel, this aspect is particularly relevant, so the following statement about movement indicates that the person will travel a long distance.

Shao Yanhe said that the person would have a journey of three thousand li and would not return for seven or eight years. Later, in the seventh month, he indeed followed an official to Guangnan, a distance of two thousand three hundred li, and did not return until the eighth year. Because the day stem combined with the post-horse showed mutual movement, with寅 and申 each having seven numbers, the seven-year prediction was made. The year of travel had亥 added to巳, with one end being the heavenly gate and the other the earthly foot, indicating that any movement would result in a long journey.

On Jiawu day, asking about taking office (Tuo's case)

In the year Wuyin, fourth month, on the day Jiawu (with the character Jia repeated, as written originally as "Jia Jia Wu Ri"), using "You" (Congkui) as the Month General, the calculation starts at the hour Yin. The divination is for taking office. This case is from Guo's "Divination Cases."

The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Wei is occupied by the Nobleman, Shen by the Teng Snake, You by the Vermilion Bird, Xu by Liu He, Hai by Gou Chen, Zi by the Azure Dragon, Chou by Tian Kong, Yin by the White Tiger, Mao by Tai Chang, Chen by the Black Tortoise, Si by Tai Yin, and Wu by the Heavenly Empress. On the first day of the Jiawu cycle, the Nobleman is in Wei, which corresponds to the寅 hour of the night, thus matching perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Jia (with its lodging palace in Yin) with You, which is occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the second lesson has You with Chen, which is occupied by the Black Tortoise; the third lesson has the day branch Wu with Chou, which is occupied by Tian Kong; the fourth lesson has Chou with Shen, which is occupied by the Teng Snake. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Dingyou, representing the official ghost爻, occupied by the Vermilion Bird; the middle transmission is Chen, representing the wife's wealth爻, occupied by the Black Tortoise, marked with「◎」to indicate that Chen is in the empty period (on the Jiawu day, which belongs to the Jiawu period, the empty period is in Chen and Si); the final transmission is Jihai, representing the parents爻, occupied by Gou Chen. The official ghost爻, occupied by the Vermilion Bird, initiating from the day stem, serves as the basis for the following section about precautions against accusations and impeachment; the final transmission Hai, representing the parents' seal, can resolve the official ghost爻.

Guo Yuqing said: In the year of Wuyin, I used the Qi Men to calculate, planning to take up my post on the first day of the fourth lunar month, on the day of Jiawu at the hour of Yin. By chance, on the previous day, I used Liu Ren to recheck and obtained this lesson. The official ghost is in the Vermilion Bird, and it is initiating from the day stem, indicating the presence of official news, and one should be cautious of accusations. Fortunately, the middle transmission and final transmission both fall into empty and fallen positions, but the year stem is on Chen, forming a filling of the empty. It is also good that the first transmission official ghost generates the final transmission, and the final transmission generates the day stem, with the seal and support able to resolve theInauspicious Sha. The month general is acting as the Vermilion Bird official ghost, which is also an image of the emperor's side. Having obtained this lesson, I felt very doubtful and fearful, but it was already inconvenient to change the date. When I took up my post, I indeed heard news from the official邸报, which was truly a strange event.

On Jiawu day, Fu Dalu divined about his whole life (from the Song edition of Shao's case records and Oral Insights).

On the day Jiawu of the year Jiyou, which is the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the person asking the question, Fu Dalu, was born in the year Jisi and is forty years old this year. He is asking about his life's fortune and misfortune. The month general is 'Zi' (Shenhou), placed on the 'Mao' hour to cast the divination. This case is recorded in the Song edition of the 'Shao Case' and the 'Kou Jian'.

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve branches with their respective heavenly generals: Chou is accompanied by the Nobleman, Yin by the Teng Snake, Mao by the Vermilion Bird, Chen by Liu He, Si by Gou Chen, Wu by the Azure Dragon, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by the White Tiger, You by Tai Chang, Xu by the Black Tortoise, Hai by Tai Yin, and Zi by the Heavenly Empress. On a day with the stem Jia, during the day, the Nobleman is on Chou. At the Mao hour, which is during the day, it matches, and the heavenly generals are arranged in order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Jia (with its lodging palace in Yin) has Hai, which is accompanied by Tai Yin; the second lesson, Hai has Shen, which is accompanied by the White Tiger; the third lesson, the day branch Wu has Mao, which is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson, Mao has Zi, which is accompanied by the Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Bing Shen, representing the official ghost爻, accompanied by the White Tiger; the middle transmission is Si, representing the son爻, accompanied by Gou Chen and falling into the旬空, since the day is Jiawu, belonging to the Jiawu旬, the empty position is in Chen and Si, so it is marked as 'empty Si'; the final transmission is Ren Yin, representing the brother爻, accompanied by the Teng Snake. Mao is the Yangren of Jia wood, accompanied by the Vermilion Bird and located on the house position Wu, which serves as the basis for the subsequent judgment about events occurring within the family.

Shao Yanhe said: In this case, the water of Hai comes to birth the day stem, indicating the appearance of official stars and the protection of the Tai Yin deity. However, the Yangren at卯 enters the residence position with the Vermilion Bird, which is the family's own Vermilion Bird. This suggests that there will be troubles within the family soon. The first transmission is White Tiger acting as official ghost, indicating the haunting of a deceased person, but actually it is the family members themselves causing the trouble, and thus he himself brings about the problem. The final transmission is寅 placed on巳, meaning that in the long term it will be four years, and in the short term four months, he will be involved in matters. If he encounters a year of metal that brings punishment, he will certainly not be able to escape legal trouble. Later, Fu Dalu had a conflict with his younger brother, who harbored resentment and reported his son's illegal activities—巳 represents the son—four years later in August, he was exiled to Yingzhou and died.

The basis for the deduction is that in the fourth year, the supreme ruler is in Zi, and Zi is connected to You, which is exactly the supreme ruler Jiyou receiving support, thus causing many troubles. It should occur in August because August also supports You metal.

On the Jiawu day, He Zichong divined about the person's life (same divination case).

He Zizhong was born in the year Renxu, which is 48 years ago. When he divined about his entire life's fortune and misfortune, he received the same hexagram.

The lesson pattern is exactly the same as the previous case. Outer circle: Chou is multiplied by the Nobleman, Yin is multiplied by the Teng Snake, Mao by the Vermilion Bird, Chen by Liu He, Si by Gou Chen, Wu by the Azure Dragon, Wei by Tian Kong, Shen by the White Tiger, You by Tai Chang, Xu by the Black Tortoise, Hai by Tai Yin, and Zi by the Heavenly Empress. The four lessons, read from right to left: the Day Stem Jia (located in Yin) has Hai multiplied by Tai Yin; Hai has Shen multiplied by the White Tiger; the Day Branch Wu has Mao multiplied by the Vermilion Bird; Mao has Zi multiplied by the Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Bingshen, representing the official ghost爻 multiplied by the White Tiger; the middle transmission is Si, representing the son爻 multiplied by Gou Chen and falling into the旬空; the final transmission is Rennyin, representing the brother爻 multiplied by the Teng Snake. The White Tiger multiplying the official ghost Shen initiates the transmission, which serves as the basis for the subsequent judgment that he will be punished. Si is counted as four and Hai as seven, adding up to eleven, which is the basis for the calculation of "eleven years of leniency" mentioned later.

Shao Yanhe said: Next year, the person's year pillar will arrive at the Yin position, and due to someone's death, he will find something by the water, having a period of eleven years of ease; afterwards, he will still be in financial difficulty and will commit a crime; after being punished, he will become a furnace worker, eventually being ruined by a man surnamed Chen. The next year, indeed, a monk drowned while crossing the river, carrying four silver ingots, which were picked up by He Zizhong, and he started a small business, indeed having eleven years of ease. By the twelfth year, again at this stream, he would injure someone and be punished; later he became a miner, but less than four years later, he was accused by a man surnamed Chen of robbery and murder, and was exiled to Chizhou. The number of Si is four and the number of Hai is seven, which makes exactly eleven years. The White Tiger is used as the Post-horse and also represents the ghost, so it is ominous.

Yiwei day

On Yiwei day, Wu Yishan divined about a night disturbance at Tianning Temple (指南).

In the Jichou year of Shunzhi, on the Yiwei day of the sixth lunar month, the lesson was cast with "Wei" (Xiaoji) as the Month General, placed on the You hour. At that time, in the middle of the night at Tianning Temple in Yangzhou, both inside and outside were startled. Wu Yishan came to inquire about the meaning of this. This case is recorded in the "Lunin Zhi Nan."

The flat layout of the lesson pattern. The outer circle shows the twelve earthly branches with their respective heavenly generals: Shen (Hour of the Monkey) is accompanied by the Nobleman, You (Hour of the Rooster) by the Teng Snake, Xu (Hour of the Dog) by the Vermilion Bird, Hai (Hour of the Pig) by Liu He, Zi (Hour of the Rat) by Gou Chen, Chou (Hour of the Ox) by the Azure Dragon, Yin (Hour of the Tiger) by Tian Kong, Mao (Hour of the Rabbit) by the White Tiger, Chen (Hour of the Dragon) by Tai Chang, Si (Hour of the Snake) by the Black Tortoise, Wu (Hour of the Horse) by Tai Yin, and Wei (Hour of the Goat) by the Heavenly Empress. On the night of the second day, the Nobleman is in Shen, and the亥 hour belongs to the night, which matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson, the day stem Yi (with its lodging palace in Chen) has Zi, which is accompanied by Gou Chen; the second lesson, Zi has Shen, which is accompanied by the Nobleman; the third lesson, the day branch Wei has Mao, which is accompanied by the White Tiger; the fourth lesson, Mao has Hai, which is accompanied by Liu He. There are two points to clarify: first, the character originally carved as 'Si' in the bottom row on the far right should actually be the day stem 'Yi' according to the lesson pattern, as the two characters are similar in shape and may have been mistakenly carved; second, the initial transmission originally marked as 'Gui' is actually 'Mao', but since Mao wood shares the same energy as Yi wood, it should be considered a brother爻 to the day stem, suggesting a possible carving error. The three transmissions are: the initial transmission is Gui Mao accompanied by the White Tiger, the middle transmission is Ji Hai as the parent爻 accompanied by Liu He, and the final transmission is Yi Wei as the wife and wealth爻 accompanied by the Heavenly Empress.

Chen Gongxian said: The main point is that there is a band of thieves coming from the east by boat, but there is no harm to the city or its districts. This is because the twoInauspicious Spirit, You Du and Ze Fu, are present on the day stem and day branch, and the transmission starts from the day branch, indicating that the thieves are coming from the east. The first and middle transmissions are weak and confined, but the final transmission is where the sun and month builder are located, so there is no harm to the city or its districts. Later, on the Jihai day, it was indeed reported that the thieves came from the east, advancing by both water and land, causing the people to panic and flee. I also divined again at the hour of Shen, and the three transmissions were Xu, You, and Shen, which is a sign of returning and turning back. The first transmission was strong and generated the final transmission. Although there were traitors inside inciting them, they would retreat without fighting. When the official troops came out, the thieves scattered and fled in all directions.

On the Yiwei day, Tong Xiaocai divined the dwelling (the original case file and oral commentary).

On the 11th day of the third lunar month in the 5th year of the Jianyan era, on the Yiwei day, the 'Xu' (Hekui) is taken as the Month General, placed on the 'Chou' hour to cast the divination. The person seeking the divination is Tong Xiaocai, born in the Wushen year, aged 29 that year, asking about his family home. This case is found in the Fang Ben's "Zhan An" and "Kou Jian."

On the night of Yi, the Nobleman is in Shen, and the time of Chou belongs to the night, which matches perfectly. The heavenly generals are arranged in a clockwise order. The four lessons are arranged from right to left: the first lesson has the day stem Yi (with its lodging palace in Chen) with Chou, which is accompanied by the Azure Dragon; the second lesson has Chou with Xu, which is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird; the third lesson has the day branch Wei with Chen, which is accompanied by Tai Chang; the fourth lesson has Chen with Chou, which is accompanied by the Azure Dragon. The upper gods of the four lessons, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, are all earthy elements, which is referred to as 'four earths are complete' in the text. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Xin Chou, the middle transmission is Wu Xu, and the final transmission is Yi Wei, all of which are wife wealth hexagrams, each accompanied by the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, and Heavenly Empress respectively. The three transmissions being all wealth hexagrams is the reason for the subsequent interpretation of entering a farmstead and the phrase 'full wealth transforms into a ghost'.

Shao Yanhe said: This lesson indicates a person coming to the house, which is exactly the case for seeking to purchase a new residence. A house cannot do without earth, and now the four earth branches, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, are all present, indicating that there are mountains on all sides. The main mountain is too high, pressing down on the house. There is a new grave on the mountain that is about to be broken ground, which will certainly lead to a dispute with the grave owner. The Azure Dragon on the left side of the house also brings the broken ruin evil omen. (Here, the phrase 'the Azure Dragon on the left of the house' refers to the yin spirit of the day branch, not the Heaven Plate. Only when judging graves do we use the Heaven Plate to examine the sitting mountain and facing mountain; when discussing the house, we only refer to the four lessons. Shao Gong's various divination cases are all like this.)

It is necessary to use earth to fill in, and there will certainly be wealth in the future. The Azure Dragon is placed on Chou, although it carries the meaning of fragmentation, it is not complete, so there must be a gap on the left, which should be filled with earth. However, there will not be any outstanding scholars coming from the family. The first transmission is the Azure Dragon, indicating that the wife will be the one managing the household. The middle transmission is Xu with the Vermilion Bird, indicating that the western north part of the house is not properly built, leading to disputes over boundaries with others. The final transmission is the wealth hexagram riding on the Heavenly Empress, indicating that the women in the family will be widows. Someone asks: why do we say the women in the family will be widows when the wealth hexagram is on Wei with the Heavenly Empress? Because wealth represents the wife, the Heavenly Empress represents women, and Wei also represents the wife. Wei is also the storage of the current day, which is Yiwei, but it instead harms the day stem on Chou. Harm means to overcome, so it indicates that all the women in the family will be widows.

The year's寡宿煞 is again on 未, so Zhao Gong dared to make such a judgment. He also said that the western-north part of the family's property was not properly constructed and needed to dispute the boundary — the term 「western-north」 should be 「northeast」; Ai Han saw several versions that all said 「western-north」. Considering the two words 「dispute boundary」, it seems to refer to 戌 riding the Vermilion Bird: 戌 is located in the western-north, and the Vermilion Bird governs conflict. Unfortunately, there are no water flows around to discharge, indicating that the people of this family have heavy and turbid temperaments. The wood of 乙 is considered to have earth as its wealth, and earth is in a strong position, with noInauspicious Spirit in the heavenly generals it rides, so this family is destined for great fortune. Also, since the first transmission is the wealth hexagram, and it is accompanied by the Qinglong, which is the wealth star, the fortune is further enhanced. Twenty years after building the house, the prediction will be fulfilled: 未 is the eighth, 戌 is the fifth, and five multiplied by eight gives forty. In spring, wood is strong and earth is weak, so it should be halved, thus the fulfillment occurs in twenty years.
