Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

On the 23rd day of the seventh month in the year of Wushen, using the hour of Hai (Water Hour) with the general of Wu (午将) placed upon it, a divination was cast for Shen Sigu, born in the year of Gengxu, aged fifty-nine, concerning a matter of contesting the position of "Baozheng," which is the head of a local official duty. This case is cited in the "Koujian" and Fang's case records. The divination chart shows: on Zi (Rat) is Gou Chen (Hook Star), on Chou (Ox) is Qinglong (Azure Dragon), on Yin (Tiger) is Tiankong (Heavenly Void), on Mao (Rabbit) is Baihu (White Tiger), on Chen (Dragon) is Taichang (Great Constable), on Si (Snake) is Xuanwu (Black Tortoise), on Wu (Horse) is Taiyin (Great Yin), on Wei (Goat) is Tianhou (Heavenly Empress), on Shen (Monkey) is Guiren (Nobleman), on You (Rooster) is Tengshe (Teng Snake), on Xu (Dog) is Zhuque (Vermilion Bird), and on Hai (Pig) is Liuhe (Six Harmonies). This lesson uses the night nobleman, with Guiren located on Shen. The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. Wu is placed on Hai, with the heaven plate advancing seven positions ahead of the earth plate. The four lessons are read from right to left: the day is Yi (Ethylene), with the lodging palace on Chen (Dragon), which has Hai (Water) and is occupied by Liuhe (Six Harmonies); the second lesson on Hai (Water) has Wu (Horse) and is occupied by Taiyin (Great Yin); the third lesson on the day branch Si (Snake) has Zi (Rat) and is occupied by Gou Chen (Hook Star); the fourth lesson on Zi (Rat) has Wei (Goat) and is occupied by Tianhou (Heavenly Empress). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu (Horse), with the ten thousand changes resulting in Bingwu (Bing Wu), occupied by Taiyin (Great Yin), which is the son; the second transmission is Chou (Ox), with the ten thousand changes resulting in Guichou (Gui Chou), occupied by Qinglong (Azure Dragon), which is the wife's wealth; the third transmission is Shen (Monkey), with the ten thousand changes resulting in Wushen (Wu Shen), occupied by Guiren (Nobleman), with Shen metal being both the official ghost of Yi wood and its absolute position.

Shao Yanhe said: This lesson is called "Re-examination." The final transmission is originally a dead god, but the water of亥 and子 comes to nourish the day stem, so even in a dead situation, an opportunity arises. However, your mother advised you not to compete, your daughter also advised you, but you did not listen, and in the end, you did it yourself; although you gained wealth, the source is improper and causes people's dislike, and later you will certainly regret it. The property you obtained can be used to move your father-in-law's coffin into it, and later it will surely produce a noble son who becomes a great monk. You yourself will be buried next to the ancestral tomb. ("必陋贵子" the character "陋" is difficult to understand, according to the meaning, it should be a miswriting of a character like "荫," and this is recorded as per the original text.)

Shen Sigu's mother was from the Tong family, and his daughter also married into the Tong family. When the Tong family's mourning period was over, Shen Sigu wanted to apply for the position of head of the neighborhood committee, but his mother and daughter both advised him against it. He did not listen and still went ahead to complete the application himself. Later, when the Tong family divided their property, they invited Shen Sigu to preside over the division. However, Shen Sigu took a piece of the common property and set it aside as a burial ground for the living. Four years later, a son was born to him, and this child later became a great monk at Guangjiao Temple.

Cheng Shuxun remarks: In this divination, the Yi wood takes Zi water as its mother, Wu fire as its daughter, Hai water as its father, Shen metal as its grandfather, and Chou earth as its tomb. Shen is located over Chou, which is the image of the grandfather's tomb. Shen Sigu's birth year is Gengxu, and the tomb of Geng metal is also Chou, indicating that he himself will eventually be buried there. Shen represents a monk, and Chou represents virtue. The presence of a nobleman over Chou suggests that a great monk will emerge.

Bingwu day

In the year Jiyou of the Jianyan era, on the day Bingwu, Yi Boting divined the dwelling (case file for divination of the dwelling's direction).

In the year Jiayou of the Jianyan era, on the day Bingwu, using the卯 general added on the Shen hour, the person seeking the divination is Yi Boting, born in the year Jiaxu, aged thirty-six, asking about his residence. This case is found in the Fang Ben divination records. The divination chart shows: on Zi, 「Teng Snake」; on Chou, 「Vermilion Bird」; on Yin, 「Liu He」; on Mao, 「Gou Chen」; on Chen, 「Azure Dragon」; on Si, 「Tian Kong」; on Wu, 「White Tiger」; on Wei, 「Tai Chang」; on Shen, 「Black Tortoise」; on You, 「Tai Yin」; on Xu, 「Heavenly Empress」; on Hai, 「Nobleman」. This lesson uses the night nobleman, with the nobleman located on Hai. The twelve heavenly generals proceed in order. The Mao general is added on Shen, with the heaven plate advancing seven positions ahead of the earth plate. The four lessons are read from right to left: the day is Bing, so the day's lodging palace is on Si, with Zi on Si, riding Teng Snake; the second lesson has Zi with Wei, riding Tai Chang; the third lesson has the day's branch Wu with Chou, riding Vermilion Bird; the fourth lesson has Chou with Shen, riding Black Tortoise. The three transmissions: the first transmission is Zi, with the ten thousand hidden getting Renzi, riding Teng Snake, with Zi water being the official ghost of Bing fire; the middle transmission is Wei, with the ten thousand hidden getting Dingwei, riding Tai Chang, which is the son; the final transmission is Yin, riding Liu He, which is the parent and official seal, Yin being in the Jiachen ten thousand hidden and falling into Kongwang, so it is marked as 「Kong」.

Shao Yanhe said: Zi and Chou are in a harmonious relationship, and the final transmission is Yin, which is the place of growth for Bing fire. Although Zi water may overcome Bing fire, the presence of Chou earth and Yin wood leads the official ghost to transform into life qi. Although the first and middle transmissions form a harmful relationship, it is still possible to expect initial misfortune followed by good fortune. Unfortunately, Yin falls exactly on Kongwang, so the transformation does not take place. Although it seems there is growth, it does not actually occur, and instead becomes a misfortune. There will certainly be a great disaster in the year of Jiayin. The years of Zi and Chou will be eventful. One must move house to avoid disaster. Yi Boting was arrogant and self-willed. In the year of Jiayin, he had financial dealings with a person who had already been sentenced to death, getting involved in a murder case, and was imprisoned for over a hundred days, almost losing his life. Indeed, the years of Zi and Chou were eventful. In the year of Jiwei, his wife and mother both died, and in the year of Gengshen, his son also died. Later, after moving house, he was able to avoid disaster.

Cheng Shuxun remarks: Generally, when heavenly stems and earthly branches combine, they need assistance and support to form a good divination. Now this is the Jiachen decade, and the final transmission falls precisely on Yin. Moving forward leads to Kongwang, and moving backward is attacked by Zi water. Therefore, calamity begins in the year of Zi or Chou, and people die in the year of Jiayin. Since it is at the end of the decade and leads into Kongwang, it is directly determined by these years to predict the timing.

Divination on Bingwu day: invasion of enemies (from "One Needle Sees the Essence")

On the day of Bingwu, divining about an invasion by foreign tribes, this example is from "One Needle Sees the Essence." The divination chart shows: on寅 (Yin) is "Liu He," on卯 (Mao) is "Gou Chen," on辰 (Chen) is "Qinglong," on巳 (Si) is "Tian Kong," on午 (Wu) is "Baihu," on未 (Wei) is "Tai Chang," on申 (Shen) is "Xuanwu," on酉 (You) is "Tai Yin," on戌 (Xu) is "Tianhou," on亥 (Hai) is "Guiren," on子 (Zi) is "Teng Snake," and on丑 (Chou) is "Zhuqiao." The Nobleman is on亥 (Hai). The Twelve Heavenly Generals are in order. The lesson does not mention the Month General and the time of divination, so it is inferred from the Four Lessons. The Heaven Plate is nine positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The Four Lessons are read from right to left: the Bing day's Lodging Palace is on巳 (Si), and on巳 (Si) is寅 (Yin), riding "Liu He"; the second lesson on寅 (Yin) is亥 (Hai), riding "Guiren"; the third lesson on the Day Branch午 (Wu) is卯 (Mao), riding "Gou Chen"; the fourth lesson on卯 (Mao) is子 (Zi), riding "Teng Snake." The Three Transmissions: the first is Zi, with the ten-thousand-year cycle indicating Renzi, riding "Teng Snake," and Zi water is the official ghost of Bing fire; the second is You, with the ten-thousand-year cycle indicating Jiyou, riding "Tai Yin," which is wife wealth; the third is Wu, with the ten-thousand-year cycle indicating Bingwu, riding "Baihu," which is brother. The three transmissions, Zi, You, and Wu, combined with the third lesson's Mao, form the "four cardinal points" of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, showing an interwoven pattern.

Zhu Bi submitted a memorial stating that the four lessons neither form a mutual control above nor below, so he took the yin spirit Zi Water from the day branch to control the day stem in the initiating transmission. The day stem, Bing Fire, represents the internal side, while the day branch represents the external side; an external control over the internal signifies the image of foreign tribes invading. This kind of mutual control at a distance is called 'no punishment.' Fortunately, the spirit煞 'You Du,' which governs military incursions, and the nobleman are both located outside the three transmissions, indicating that the enemy forces are currently at the border.

In this divination, the Teng Snake and White Tiger both appear in the Three Transmissions, and the four central branches are intermingled. The verse says: "If today's day branch is Zi or Wu, and the Three Transmissions contain the four central branches, then the three intersecting divination indicates that there is a hidden secret guest in the household; either someone has fled or someone is taking refuge." Based on this, the current situation at the border is inferred to have already experienced an attack (the original text mistakenly writes 'Si' instead of 'Yi'), and the enemy failed to gain advantage and retreated. However, throughout this divination, the auspicious energy is minimal while the ominous energy is abundant, so寇患 cannot be avoided. The reason why it is currently considered auspicious is that the initiating transmission falls in Kongwang, and the wandering palace is outside the three heavens. The reason why寇患 cannot be avoided is that the four central branches follow each other, and the Teng Snake and White Tiger occupy the first and final transmissions respectively. The reason why it does not lead to great harm is that Tai Yin is in the Three Transmissions, and the nobleman moves in a favorable direction and overlays the day stem position.

Bingwu day · Divination about border bandits and alarms (continuing the previous case, with the chart partially completed)

This line represents the arrangement of heavenly generals remaining after the previous divination example's lesson disk was compressed into a single line. The four characters are all abbreviated names of heavenly generals: "Guì" refers to the Nobleman, "Hòu" refers to the Heavenly Empress, "Yīn" refers to Tai Yin, and "Xuán" refers to the Black Tortoise. Originally, each of these was positioned over a specific earthly branch position on the earth plate, indicating the heavenly general accompanying the heavenly god at that position. Now, the corresponding earthly branches, four lessons, and three transmissions have all been dispersed outside this line, so the four generals alone cannot restore the complete lesson structure. Therefore, it is preserved exactly as in the original text without any supplementation. The following commentary by Zhu Bi is based precisely on this lesson.

Zhu Bi submitted a report stating: In this lesson, the upper and lower spirits of the four lessons do not mutually control each other. Only the Yin spirit Zi water at the day branch position controls the day stem. Therefore, it is taken as the 'initiating transmission' (first transmission). The day stem is Bing fire, representing oneself; Chen is the position of external affairs, representing the outside. When the external position controls the internal position, it indicates the image of foreign tribes invading and border disturbances. Since there is no mutual control among the four lessons, but the Yin spirit controls from a distance, the diviners call this 'no punishment'. Fortunately, the 'You Du' spirit and the 'Tian Yi Gu Ren' which represent thieves and invaders are located outside the three transmissions, indicating that the enemy is currently only active along the border. In this lesson, the two凶 spirits Teng Snake and Bai Hu have entered the three transmissions. The four central spirits Zi, Wu, Mao, and You intersect with each other. The verse says: 'Today's Chen corresponds to Zi and Wu, the four central spirits in the transmission are interrelated. The three intersections indicate hidden private outsiders, either escape or avoidance of misfortune.' Therefore, the four central spirits intersecting to form the 'three intersections lesson' indicates that there are hidden outsiders in the family, either escape or avoidance of misfortune. Based on this, it can be inferred that the current border has been disturbed by the invaders for a while, but since they could not gain an advantage, they retreated. However, looking at the entire lesson from beginning to end, there is little auspicious energy and much inauspicious energy, so the border trouble has not yet been removed. The current situation is considered auspicious because the initiating transmission spirit is in the旬空, and You Du is outside the three chens. The reason for the border trouble not being avoided is because the four central spirits are connected with Teng Snake and Bai Hu, forming the first and final transmissions. However, it is said that it will not lead to great harm because the hidden Tai Yin is in the three transmissions, and the Gu Ren is added in a forward direction at the day stem's original position.

On the day of Bingwu, divining the weather for a ten-day period (from the year Jisi of the Qianlong era, second month, by the shepherd's verification)

In the year Jisi of the Qianlong era, on the second month, on the day Bingwu, the divination was cast using the month general Xu placed on the Zi hour. The question was about the weather for this ten-day period. This entry is from the "Pastoral Divination Verification." The following is the compressed layout of the divination board. The Heaven and Earth plates form a circle: the top row is "Mao Chen Si Wu," with the following in order "Kong, Hu, Chang, Xuan" (Heavenly Void, White Tiger, Tai Chang, Black Tortoise). On the left side are "Long (Azure Dragon) Yin" and "Gou (Gou Chen) Chou." On the right side are "Wei, Yin (Tai Yin)" and "Shen, Hou (Heavenly Empress)." The bottom row is "Zi Hai Xu You," with the following in order "He, Zhu, She, Gui" (Liu He, Zhu Que, Teng Snake, Tian Yi Gui Ren). The twelve Heavenly Generals are arranged in order from the Nobleman, with the Nobleman falling exactly on the Heaven Plate You. The four lessons' lower deities are arranged from right to left as "Chen Wu Mao Bing," and the upper deities are "Yin Chen Chou Mao," each accompanied by "Long, Hu, Gou, Kong," that is, the first lesson Mao added to Bing, the second lesson Chou added to Mao, the third lesson Chen added to Wu (the day branch Wu has Chen on it), and the fourth lesson Yin added to Chen. The three transmissions are Chou, Hai, You: the first transmission Chou is the son grandson yao, hidden dry癸, accompanied by Gou Chen; the second transmission Hai is the official ghost yao, hidden dry辛, accompanied by Zhu Que; the third transmission You is the wife wealth yao, hidden dry己, accompanied by the Nobleman.

Wang Mufu said: This lesson is called "Extreme Yin Lesson." The first transmission is the earth of Chou, which falls within the旬空, and the middle transmission is riding on the Vermilion Bird and is located at the position of Hai. Chou is the "Rain Master" in the divine omens, Hai is the water god, You belongs to the卦 of兑 (Lake) and is water, and the water's storage position Chen is also pressing on the day branch Wu. These are all signs of rain. However, today the day stem Bing has the wood of Mao riding on Tian Kong, which turns back to nourish the fire of Bing, so the day will be clear and not rain. On the days of Dingwei, Wushen, and Jiyou: On the day of Wei, the earth of Wei has the fire of Si, which governs wind, and the hidden spirit of Wei, the wood of Mao, also governs wind, so these three days will be windy and clear. On the day of Shen, the fire of Wu is restrained, the Black Tortoise presses on the hidden spirit of the White Tiger riding on Tiangang Chen, indicating cloudy weather. On the day of You, the earth of Wei has the Tai Yin, also indicating cloudy weather. On the day of Gengxu, the earth of Xu has the metal of Shen, which can generate water, and Shen is the mother of water, and it also rides on the Heavenly Empress, which generates it, so it will rain. On the day of You, the Nobleman is on Hai, which governs heavy rain. It will not be clear until the day of Renzi, but the clarity is not bright, because the Teng Snake is pressing on the Sun (Month General). It is only on the day of Chou that the weather will finally clear. This is Wang Mufu's entire conclusion about the changes of clear and rainy weather within this ten-day period.

Bingwu day · Divination on illness (twelfth month, Fang Ben's divination case)

On the 12th month, Bingwu day, using the month general Zi placed on the Hai hour to cast the divination, someone comes to inquire about illness. This passage is from "Fang Ben Zhan An." The course of the divination is arranged as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle, starting with "Zhu, She" (Zhu Que, Teng Snake); the next row is "Liu He (Six Harmonies), Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Gui (Nobleman)"; on the left side "Chen (Gou Chen, in this book, both 'Gou' and 'Chen' are used interchangeably, both referring to Gou Chen) Si" faces the right side "Xu, Hou (Heavenly Empress)"; "Long (Qing Long) Chen" faces "Hai, Yin (Tai Yin)"; the lower row is "Kong (Tian Kong) Mao, Yin, Chou, Zi, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; ending with "Hu, Chang" (Bai Hu, Tai Chang). The four lessons have the deities from right to left as "Wei, Wu, Wu, Bing," and the upper deities are "Shen, Wei, Wei, Wu," each riding "She, Zhu, Zhu, Liu," meaning the first lesson is Wu with Bing, the second is Wei with Wu, the third is Wei with Wu (the day branch is Wu, so Wei is on Wu), and the fourth is Shen with Wei. The three transmissions are Shen, You, Xu: the first transmission Shen is the wife's wealth, hidden dry branch Wu, riding Teng Snake; the middle transmission You is the wife's wealth, hidden dry branch Ji, riding Nobleman; the final transmission Xu is the son's son, hidden dry branch Geng, riding Heavenly Empress.

Shao Yanhe said: This illness must certainly involve coughing and talking incoherently, appearing as if seeing ghosts and spirits. Because the three transmissions are Shen, You, and Xu, which belong to metal, and metal corresponds to the lungs in the human body, thus causing coughing; and the first lesson is Wu fire added to the day stem Bing fire, making the fire too strong, thus scattering the mind and causing restlessness and madness, and speaking nonsense. It is said he sees ghosts and spirits because the fourth lesson has Shen added to Wei, and the heavenly stem Wei is located in the dwelling position; Wei branch in Six Rats corresponds to ghostly and strange phenomena. The prediction of his death is because the three transmissions finally end at Xu, which is the dead place for Bing fire. Moreover, within the territory of Wei, there is also the 'Ghost Mansion' among the twenty-eight constellations, further confirming the ghostly and spiritual phenomena.

On Bingwu day, divination about the childbirth of Chen Guifei (in the third year of Huangyou, third month, final volume of Yu Lianhuan).

On the day of the third month of the third year of Huangyou, which was the Xinmao year and the Bingwu day, Emperor Renzong of the Song dynasty summoned Chu Yan and ordered him to cast a divination for the coming of summer. After Chu Yan completed his divination, the emperor asked him to predict the childbirth of Consort Chen. Consort Chen was twenty-two years old and had been pregnant for ten months but had not yet given birth. The divination was cast at the hour of Wei (the sixth hour). The month general was "Congkui" (You), which was placed on Wei to start the divination. This entry is from "Yizhen Jianxue" and also appears in the last volume of "Yulianhuan." The course of the divination is presented as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle: the upper row is "Wei, Shen, You, Xu" (autumn quarter), with "Gou Chen, Liu He, Zhu Que, Teng Snake" (Gou Chen, Liu He, Zhu Que, Teng Snake) above them; on the left side are "Qinglong (Azure Dragon) Wu" and "Tian Kong (Heavenly Void) Si"; on the right side are "Hai, Guiren (Nobleman)" and "Zi, Tianhou (Heavenly Empress)"; the lower row is "Chen, Mao, Yin, Chou," with "Baihu (White Tiger), Tai Chang, Xuanwu (Black Tortoise), Tai Yin" (Baihu, Tai Chang, Xuanwu, Tai Yin) below them. The four lessons have the heavenly spirits arranged from right to left as "Shen, Wu, Wei, Bing," and the upper spirits are "Xu, Shen, You, Wei," each riding "Teng Snake, Liu He, Zhu Que, Gou Chen," meaning the first lesson is Wei with Bing, the second lesson is You with Wei, the third lesson is Shen with Wu (the day branch is Wu, and Shen is on Wu), and the fourth lesson is Xu with Shen. The three transmissions are Shen, Xu, Zi: the first transmission is Shen, representing the wife's wealth, with the hidden heavenly stem Wu and riding Liu He; the second transmission is Xu, representing the son's fortune, with the hidden heavenly stem Geng and riding Teng Snake; the third transmission is Zi, representing the official ghost, with the hidden heavenly stem Ren and riding Tianhou.

Chu Yan presented a report stating: This divination concerns childbirth, and the minister dares not speak plainly. Renzong said: Just tell the meaning of the divination truthfully. Chu Yan then reported: On the 23rd day of this month, Gengxu, at the hour of Chen, a princess will be born. This girl will certainly lose her left eye; within five days of her birth, she may even face the risk of death. Although childbirth is dangerous, the mother will not be harmed. Preparations should be made in advance. The emperor asked: Is there any way to avert this? Chu Yan replied: There is no way to ward it off; the minister deserves to die a thousand deaths. On that day, Renzong's expression gradually turned angry and said: Go outside and wait for the imperial decree. He immediately sent people to guard Chu Yan. On the 23rd day of the month, at the hour of Chen, a princess was indeed born. The imperial consort experienced a very difficult childbirth, and by that night, the princess suddenly convulsed, losing her left eye. On the 27th day, the princess died. Renzong immediately bestowed on Chu Yan imperial wine and aromatic medicine. The next day, he summoned Chu Yan to court, and Chu Yan knelt and thanked him for his pardon. Renzong said: Your divination proved accurate as if by divine power.

The commentary states: The mother's age falls on the亥 (Hai) position, and the丑 (Chou) branch is added upon it. Since丑 (Chou) combines with子 (Zi), the child is born on庚戌 (Gengxu) day. At that time,午火 (Wu Fire) is strong and申金 (Shen Metal) is in a dead position, so the lower god overpowers the upper god, indicating the birth of a girl. The申金 (Shen Metal) is riding on六合 (Liu He), creating a situation of internal conflict and external injury, which harms the wood associated with六合 (Liu He). Wood in the human body corresponds to the eyes. Since申 is yang, yang governs the left side, so the left eye is damaged. On the fifth day after birth, it is寅 (Yin) day, which is the绝 (Jue) position for metal. Taking the day stem as the child, Gengxu is cut off by寅. On寅, there is also Tiangang (Chen) and White Tiger, so the child will surely die within five days. The entire chart transforms into the "Disorder of the Head" pattern, so the mother faces the danger of difficult childbirth. However, the day branch represents the mother, and午火 (Wu Fire) is prosperous in the fourth month. Additionally, the month builder has Tianyi (a good god) riding on Qinglong (Azure Dragon), so the mother will have a safe delivery.

Bingwu day. Divination on fengshui (fourth month, Zhang's case)

In the fourth month on a Bingwu day, the lesson is cast using the Month General Shen placed on the Wu hour. The divination is about the风水 of a tomb or residence. This passage is from the "Zhang Ben Zhan An." The lesson disk is arranged as follows. The Heaven and Earth disk is arranged in a circle: the top row is "Wei Shen You Xu," with "Gou, He, Zhu, Sha" (Gou Chen, Liu He, Zhu Que, Teng Sha) above it; on the left side are "Long (Qinglong) Wu" and "Kong (Tian Kong) Si"; on the right side are "Hai, Gui (Guiren)" and "Zi, Hou (Tianhou)"; the bottom row is "Chen Mao Yin Chou," with "Hu, Chang, Xuan, Yin" (Baihu, Tai Chang, Xuanwu, Tai Yin) below it. The four lessons have the spirits arranged from right to left as "Shen Wu Wei Bing," and the upper spirits are "Xu Shen You Wei," each riding "Sha, He, Zhu, Gou," that is, the first lesson Wei with Bing, the second lesson You with Wei, the third lesson Shen with Wu, and the fourth lesson Xu with Shen. The three transmissions are Shen, Xu, Zi: the first transmission Shen is the wife's wealth爻, hidden dry branch Wu, riding Liu He; the middle transmission Xu is the son's wealth爻, hidden dry branch Geng, riding Teng Sha; the final transmission Zi is the official ghost爻, hidden dry branch Ren, riding Tianhou. This lesson is exactly the same as the previous one used by Chu Yan to divinate the birth of the favored concubine, except that the subject being divined is different.

Liu Rixin says: When divining风水, the day stem represents the coming dragon, and the god on the stem is Wei, which is earth and slopes out, so this coming dragon has red and yellow earth that is slanted and not upright. The day branch represents the site, and the god on the branch is Shen, which belongs to high and elevated, so the site is located on high ground. The Vermilion Bird is present at You, which is the night nobleman of this day, indicating that the case sand in front of the site is round and upright. The Azure Dragon rides the Heaven Plate Wu and is placed on the Earth Plate Chen, indicating that the left sand hand is sharp and excessive. The White Tiger rides the Heaven Plate Chen and is placed on the Earth Plate Yin, where the Chen earth generates the Yin wood and releases energy, and is further weakened by the Yin wood, so the right sand hand is insufficient. The Vermilion Bird's energy is strong, so it is suitable to set the direction as Dingwei. If the direction is set as Xu, which is the burial place of fire, it should not be used. The three transmissions are Shen, Xu, and Zi, with water energy progressing, forming the lesson pattern of "entering three depths," which indicates misfortune: the first transmission indicates loss of wealth in business and injury to the family's young members; the middle transmission is Xu riding the Teng Snake, which is the burial god, indicating the loss of the wife; the final transmission is Zi placed on Xu, which indicates failure due to women, causing damage to the head of the family.

Bingwu day · Divination on the safety and danger of the Zhending city (Shunzhi Jiashen year, third month, eighteenth day, pointing south)

In the year Jiashen of the Shunzhi era, on the eighteenth day of the third lunar month, at the hour of Wu, the method of casting a divination was initiated by placing the Month General You on the Wu hour. Bian Meng Jing heard that Zhending was under siege and consulted about the safety of the city. This passage is from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nan." The course of the divination is arranged as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle: beginning with "Zhu, She" (Zhu Que, Teng She); then "Liuxi (Liu He) Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Gui (Nobleman)"; on the left side "Gou (Gou Chen) Wei" facing the right side "Zi, Hou (Heavenly Empress)"; "Qing (Qing Long) Wu" facing "Chou, Yin (Tai Yin)"; the lower row is "Kong (Tian Kong) Si, Chen, Mao, Yin, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; ending with "Hu, Chang" (Bai Hu, Tai Chang). The four lessons are arranged from right to left as "You Wu Shen Bing," and the upper gods are "Zi You Hai Shen," each accompanied by "Hou, Zhu, Gui, Liuxi," meaning the first lesson is Shen with Bing, the second is Hai with Shen, the third is You with Wu (on the day branch Wu), and the fourth is Zi with You. The three transmissions are Shen, Hai, Yin: the first transmission Shen represents the wife's wealth, with the hidden stem Wu, riding on Liu He; the middle transmission Hai represents the official ghost, with the hidden stem Xin, riding on Nobleman; the final transmission Yin represents the parents, with the hidden stem Ji, riding on Xuan Wu.

Chen Gongxian said: Not only will Zhending be captured due to internal strife, but Yanjing will also suffer other calamities. Because the first transmission is Shen, which is the wife's wealth hexagram, forming an internal conflict situation, and it is riding on the current phase energy to clash and control the final transmission which is in the旬空; the day stem and day branch are both being attacked by their respective yin spirits, and the day branch even attacks the spirit on the branch - all of these indicate that the people within the city are disunited, the troops are causing internal disturbances over food and supplies, and there are ominous signs of subordinates surrendering the city and killing their commanders. Moreover, the final transmission Yin, which is in the territory corresponding to Youyan, is being attacked by the first transmission Shen, which is the post-horse spirit. How can Yanjing remain unscathed? On that very day, the capital was also captured by bandits. More than a month later, the news came, and all my words were fulfilled.

On Bingwu day, divination on the fortune of Suizhou being surrounded (from the first month of the Yiyou year in the Shunzhi era, with the compass direction pointing south).

In the year of Yiyou of the Shunzhi era, on the first day of the first lunar month, on the day of Bingwu and the hour of Bingshen, the Grand Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, Bai Boyuan, heard that Gao Zhen was surrounded by Xu Dingguo in Suizhou, and he consulted the fortune to determine the outcome. This entry is from the "Six Rats Guide." The lesson disk is arranged as follows. The Heaven and Earth disk is arranged in a circle: starting with "Snake, Nobleman" (Teng Snake, Nobleman); then "Zhu (Al雀) You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Hou (Heavenly Empress)"; on the left "Liu (Liu He) Shen" facing the right "Chou, Yin (Tai Yin)"; "Gou (Gou Chen) Wei" facing "Yin, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; the lower row is "Qing (Qing Long) Wu, Si, Chen, Mao, Chang (Tai Chang)"; ending with "Kong, Hu" (Tian Kong, Bai Hu). The four lessons' spirits are arranged from right to left as "Xu Wu You Bing," and the upper spirits are "Yin Xu Chou You," each riding on "Xuan, Snake, Yin, Zhu," that is, the first lesson You added to Bing, the second lesson Chou added to You, the third lesson Xu added to Wu (with Wu on the day branch), and the fourth lesson Yin added to Xu. The three transmissions are You, Chou, Si, forming the metal triad of Si You Chou: the first transmission You is the wife's wealth, hidden dry Jia, riding Zhu; the second transmission Chou is the son's son, hidden dry Ji, riding Tai Yin; the third transmission Si is the companion, hidden dry Yi, riding Tian Kong.

Chen Gongxian said: Xingping Marquis Gao Jie is certainly going to be killed. The three transmissions are巳, 酉, and 丑, forming a metal trinity, which is a "from revolution" divination lesson. Within the triple harmony, there is also a hidden凶 mechanism that harms the day stem and harms the day branch. In spring, obtaining a metal trinity, the metal qi comes against the current wood qi of the season, which is a returning cutting and killing qi. The long life place of the native's戌 is completely overcome by this metal qi, with no way to resolve it. Moreover, the day stem is riding on death qi, and the day branch is riding on the tomb god of the day stem and day branch, which not only indicates that he has fallen into the other party's trap, but also that the general himself has been deceived. Now looking at the gods and generals above the day stem, day branch, native's destiny, and the year, they are all subjected to punishment, overcome, buried, and harmed. How can death be questionable? Three days later, it indeed came true.

On Bingwu day, divination on whether General Wu Song can be appointed to office (in the year Wuyin of Chongzheng, second month, pointing south)

In the year Wuyin of the Chongzheng era, on the second month, on the day Bingwu, using the month general Xu placed on the time of Si, a divination was cast. At that time, Cai Xiyang, a person from Huai'an, held the position of Northern Middle Governor and was asking whether he could obtain the position of Commander of Wusong. This entry is from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nan." The course of the divination is arranged as follows. The celestial and terrestrial plates form a circle: starting with "Guì, Hou" (Nobleman, Heavenly Empress); then "Shé (Teng Snake) Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin (Tai Yin)"; on the left side "Zhu (Zhu Qiao) You" faces the right side "Yin, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; "Liu (Liu He) Shen" faces "Mao, Chang (Tai Chang)"; the lower row is "Gou (Gou Chen) Wei, Wu, Si, Chen, Hu (Bai Hu)", ending with "Long, Kong" (Qing Long, Tian Kong). The four lessons' deities are arranged from right to left as "Hai, Wu, Xu, Bing," and the upper deities are "Chen, Hai, Mao, Xu," each accompanied by "Bai, Guì, Chang, She," meaning the first lesson is Xu added to Bing, the second is Mao added to Xu, the third is Hai added to Wu (with the day branch Wu having Hai), and the fourth is Chen added to Hai. The three transmissions are Chen, You, and Yin: the first transmission Chen is the son's爻, with the hidden stem Jia, riding on Bai Hu; the middle transmission You is the wife's wealth爻, with the hidden stem Ji, riding on Zhu Qiao; the final transmission Yin is the father's爻, with the hidden stem Jia, riding on Xuan Wu.

Chen Gongxian said: This case will first be assigned to my elder brother, and then to you. Why do you think so? Because the nobleman is riding on the亥 branch and functioning as an official star, which is directly on the day branch. The亥 branch is exactly the birth year of my elder brother; the辰 branch is your birth year. Now the辰 branch is issuing from its own branch's hidden spirit, so the亥 branch is first recommended. Moreover, the three transmissions of the辰 branch originate from the亥 position, and the word '辰' sounds the same as 'Chen', which is my surname, so we know the result. Later, within less than ten days, my elder brother was appointed as the commander of Wusong. Two months later, Cai Xiyang was recommended as the commander of Langshan.

On Bingwu day, divining when the old crane on the palace terrace will fly away (from the Classic of Divination, interpreted by Miao Gongda in the third month of the fourth year of Jiayou).

In the fourth year of the Jiayou era, on the thirteenth day of the third lunar month of the Jihai year, an old crane perched on the palace roof. The emperor summoned Master Miao Gongda to court and asked when the crane would fly away, where it would go afterwards, and when and where it would die. That day was Bingwu, and the divination was cast at the hour of Chen. The month general used was You. This entry is from the "Miao Gongda Divination Classic." The course of the divination is arranged as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle, starting with "Guì, Hou" (Nobleman, Heavenly Empress); the next row is "Shé (Teng Snake) Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin (Tai Yin)"; on the left, "Zhu (Zhu Qiao) You" faces the right side "Yin, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; "Liu (Liu He) Shen" faces "Mao, Chang (Tai Chang)"; the lower row is "Gou (Gou Chen) Wei, Wu, Si, Chen, Hu (Bai Hu)"; ending with "Long, Kong" (Qing Long, Tian Kong). The four lessons have the spirits arranged from right to left as "Hai Wu Xu Bing," and the upper spirits are "Chen Hai Mao Xu," each accompanied by "Bai, Guì, Chang, Shé." The three transmissions are Chen, You, and Yin: the first transmission, Chen, is the son爻, hidden dry branch Jia, accompanied by Bai Hu; the middle transmission, You, is the wife wealth爻, hidden dry branch Ji, accompanied by Zhu Qiao; the final transmission, Yin, is the parent爻, hidden dry branch Jia, accompanied by Xuan Wu. This course is the same as the one used by Cai Xiyang in his divination for the general.

Miao Gongda reported: This divination is called "Cutting the Gate." This crane will take off at the hour of You (13-15) today, first flying toward Due South, but will not fly more than one li before turning back toward Due West. On the day of Renyin in September of this year at the hour of Chen (9-11), this crane will be caught by soldiers near the water with bait of dark blue color, and will die when it bleeds. The Emperor asked: On what basis do you make this judgment? Miao Gongda reported: The correct hour of the divination is placed on the Tai Su, and it coincides with the White Tiger, so the crane takes off at this hour. On the day of Bingwu, both the day and the hour fall within the "Heavenly Net," so the crane must fly toward the direction of prosperity, hence first flying south. The reason it turns back to Due West within one li is because the Heavenly Ethical Nobleman and the Tai Su are both in the same position, so it returns to the position of Dui (West); You is the Vermilion Bird, whose hidden spirit is Congkui (You), and it also coincides with Life Qi. The judgment that it will be caught by soldiers near the water on the day of Renyin in September at the hour of Chen is because the Vermilion Bird is restrained by the day branch, the hour has Wu, which corresponds to September; the three transmissions end at寅, and寅 is occupied by the Black Tortoise, so the event is fixed on the day of Renyin. The hour Chen is placed on Hai, and Hai is placed on the day branch, so the event occurs near water. The Black Tortoise represents black color, which corresponds to the dark blue bait; the Tiangang Chen represents soldiers, and it is also "Great Killing" (the Great Killing God starts at Wu in January and moves according to the four seasons' branches), coinciding with Death Qi, and also the White Tiger; the year's position also coincides with Tiangang, and the day has Teng Snake. Therefore, at that time, this crane will certainly die with bleeding.

Dingwei day

Dingwei day · Divination on the enemy (Xinchou year ninth month twenty-third, one needle sees the blood)

In the year Xinchou, on the 23rd day of the ninth month, on the day Dingwei, using the month general of the hour of You, the divination was cast for an inquiry about bandits. This passage is from "Yizhen Jianxue." The course is arranged as follows. The celestial and terrestrial plates are arranged in a circle: the top row is "Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou," with the superimposed spirits "Teng Snake, Nobleman, Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin"; the left side is "Zhu (Zhuqiao), You" and "He (Liuhe), Shen"; the right side is "Yin, Xuan (Xuanwu)" and "Mao, Chang (Tai Chang)"; the bottom row is "Wei, Wu, Si, Chen," with the subordinated spirits "Gou Chen, Qinglong, Tiankong, Baihu." The four lessons have the spirits descending from right to left as "Zi Wei Zi Ding," and the upper spirits are "Si Zi Si Zi," each riding "Kong, Hou, Kong, Hou." Dingwei is an eighth-special day, where the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in the same palace, so the four lessons are repeated above and below. The first lesson is Zi added to Ding, the second is Si added to Zi, the third is Zi added to Wei, and the fourth is Si added to Zi. The three transmissions are Si, Xu, and Mao: the first transmission Si is the brother's yao, hidden stem Yi, riding Tiankong; the middle transmission Xu is the son's yao, hidden stem Geng, riding Teng Snake; the final transmission Mao is the parent's yao, riding Tai Chang. The preceding "◎" is a mark from the original text indicating the旬空 (ten-day emptiness), showing that Mao falls into Kongwang.

Zhu Bi submitted a memorial stating: Carefully analyzing this divination, it is the "Eight Special Class." Among the four lessons, if there is a剋 (overcoming), then the one that is剋 is used as the initiating transmission. The position of the initiating transmission starts from "You Du," which is the god governing military campaigns and bandits. On a Ding day, the Tian Kong (Heavenly Void) falls on Si, and the fire god is located on Zi water, being harmed by the lower god. Moreover, with the arrival of autumn and winter, the fire has already lost its strength. The "Heart Mirror" says: "The wandering god, when prosperous and strong, causes damage to the branches and stems; the thief's power rises and it is hard to hold on." Now, You Du has no strength, and the three transmissions end at Ji earth. Also, Xu is the burial place of fire, so You Du can only remain in place and be obstructed. The Teng Snake god has also returned to its original position. Teng Snake is also a thief god; when it returns to its home, it indicates that the thieves are doubtful and retreat. This divination is initiated by the monthly general placed on Xu, and Xu is precisely the monthly builder of this month. The monthly builder represents the city and government offices; on top of it is Tian Kong, which governs the position of soldiers. Now Tian Kong has also returned to its original position, indicating that the soldiers defending the city have all retreated behind the walls. This is the divination for the hour of Xu. The above is all based on the three transmissions. My divination technique previously mentioned that there would be small bands of bandits around the middle of September and October. The Zhou Yi says: "I invite the enemy, but if I am cautious, I will not fail." - Inviting the enemy is due to one's own actions, but if one is cautious, one will not fail. Considering all these together, this divination indicates a small enemy of the type of Chou, who will attack temporarily and then retreat. You Du is located at the fifth position of the day branch, and the nobleman is at the third position of the day branch, indicating that the enemy has already retreated. Tai Chang initiates the transmission, which is the omen of repairing or demolishing the city and the area around Wei Feng (this sentence is suspected to have errors or omissions, and its meaning cannot be clearly understood; I have preserved it as written). However, looking at the current situation, it is likely that the enemy will return again in deep winter, and it is still necessary to warn the border officials not to relax their vigilance.

Dingwei day, Tong Xunjian divines his future (Jianyan Jiyou year August, Fang Ben's case)

In the year Ji You of the Jianyan era, in the eighth month, on the day Ding Wei, using the month general Wu placed on the Zi hour to cast the divination. Tong, the patrol inspector, was born in the year Ding Mao, aged forty-three, and consulted about his future prospects. This entry is from the "Fang Ben Zhan An." The course disk is arranged as follows. The celestial and terrestrial plates form a circle: starting with "Liu He" (Six Harmonies), "Gou Chen" (Hooked Earth); then "Zhu (Zhu Que) Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Long (Qing Long)"; on the left side "She (Teng She) Xu" faces the right side "Mao, Kong (Tian Kong)"; "Gui (Gui Ren) You" faces "Chen, Hu (Bai Hu)"; the lower row is "Hou (Tian Hou) Shen, Wei, Wu, Si, Chang (Tai Chang)"; ending with "Yin, Xuan" (Tai Yin, Xuan Wu). The four lessons have the spirits arranged from right to left as "Chou Wei Chou Ding," and the upper spirits are "Wei Chou Wei Chou," each riding "Yin, Chen, Yin, Chen." This forms the pattern of eight special days where the day stem and branch are in the same palace, and the upper and lower spirits repeat. The three transmissions are Si, Chou, Chou: the first transmission Si is the brother's yao, with the hidden stem Yi, riding Tai Chang, and Si is also the post-horse for the day Wei; the middle transmission Chou is the son's yao, with the hidden stem Ji, riding Gou Chen; the final transmission is still Chou, with the hidden stem Ji, riding Gou Chen.

Shao Yanhe said: A fire god is going to give birth to four layers of earth. Although there is wood on the year stem to save the day stem, the wood does not have a proper position, so how can it save the day stem? According to the order, there must first be old matters that entangle the person. When the first transmission of the post-horse moves, he should start his journey, the distance is not sixty li but one hundred and twenty li. Afterwards, there will be worries of demotion and failure in his post, and there will not be only one, but certainly two. If there is only one, then there must certainly be a great disaster - only hoping to preserve his life, which is already considered a great fortune, and he must not seek promotion again. The multiple layers of earth are all Gou Chen, so how can one matter be settled? Later, Tong Xunjian left in October, passed through Xingzhou, indeed traveled over one hundred and twenty li, but suddenly was chased back, because he had unfinished official matters from his previous post, so he could not take office and was detained for four months before being released. Just when he wanted to go again, he was assigned as a guardian of the village; after the assignments were completed, he was disputed by his nephew over the division of family property, which involved him for half a year, and he finally lost this official position. He also passed by his mother's tomb, and was deceived by a fortune teller to dig the grave, which disturbed the land pulse, and he died in June of the next year.

Investigating the underlying principle: A fire deity must generate four layers of earth and four layers of Gou Chen, so how could the energy of the day stem not be drained away? In this lesson, the character Chou represents old matters and is also the son爻 of the current day, riding on Gou Chen. Therefore, it is determined that he will inevitably be burdened by various miscellaneous affairs, gradually depleting his wealth completely.

On Dingwei day, divination about Duke Dong Jin's illness (Xinmao second month, pointing south)

In the year Xinmao, second month, day Dingwei, and hour Guimao, a divination was made about the illness of Dong Jinhou. This passage is from the "Six Yin Guide." The lesson disk is arranged as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle, starting with "Zhu, Liu" (Vermilion Bird, Liu He); the next row is "Snake (Teng Snake), Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Gou (Gou Chen)"; on the left side "Gu (Nobleman) Hai" faces the right side "Chen, Long (Azure Dragon)"; "Hou (Heavenly Empress) Xu" faces "Si, Kong (Tian Kong)"; the lower row is "Yin (Tai Yin) You, Shen, Wei, Wu, Hu (White Tiger)"; ending with "Xuan, Chang" (Black Tortoise, Tai Chang). The four lessons have the spirits arranged from right to left as "Yin Wei Yin Ding," and the upper spirits are "You Yin You Yin," each accompanied by "Yin, Liu, Yin, Liu," forming the pattern of an eight-special day with the upper and lower spirits repeating. The three transmissions are You, Chen, and Hai: the first transmission You is the wife's wealth爻, hidden dry branch Ji, accompanied by Tai Yin; the middle transmission Chen is the son's fortune爻, hidden dry branch Ji, accompanied by Azure Dragon; the final transmission Hai is the official ghost爻, hidden dry branch Xin, accompanied by Nobleman.

Chen Gongxian said: This illness indicates the patient is unable to move his hands and feet, and has no life qi at all. Because the day stem's luck is in the place of death (for a day stem of Ding, its luck is in Wu, and Wu is placed on Hai, which is the place of death for fire), the post-horse also enters the storage (for a day stem of Wei, its post-horse is in Si, which is placed on Xu and enters the storage). Moreover, the year stem falls in the position of wandering souls, with Zi and Si combining, forming exactly the character 'death'. Among the three transmissions, death, storage, and place of death are all present; how can it be saved? Also, because Mao is placed on Shen and Xu is placed on Mao, it is known to be a type of illness involving wind, mania, and convulsions. When is the day it should happen? Since it is a long-term illness, it should happen on the day of Shen, at the hour of Shen, when Mao is placed on Shen.

On Dingwei day, Shengshun Bai was arrested and sent to Beijing for divination (Cengzheng Guiwei July, pointing south)

In the year Guiwei of the Chongzheng era, on the day Dingwei of the seventh lunar month, at the hour of Wu, Shen Shun from Danyang Qicun was arrested and taken to Beijing by boat, which was moored at Bangguan. A person asked for a divination. This passage is from the "Liu Ren Zhi Nan." The course of the divination is arranged as follows. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle, starting with "Gou, Long" (Gou Chen, Azure Dragon); then "Liuxi (Liu He) Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Kong (Tian Kong)"; on the left side "Zhu (Zhu Que) Chou" faces the right side "Wu, Hu (Bai Hu)"; "She (Teng She) Zi" faces "Wei, Chang (Tai Chang)"; the lower row is "Gui (Gui Ren) Hai, Xu, You, Shen, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; ending with "Hou, Yin" (Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin). The four lessons have the spirits arranged from right to left as "Chen Wei Chen Ding," and the upper spirits are "Chou Chen Chou Chen," each riding "Zhu, Long, Zhu, Long," making it an Eight Special course. The three transmissions are Hai, Chen, Chen: the first transmission Hai is the official ghost hexagram, hidden dry branch Xin, riding the nobleman; the middle transmission Chen is the son hexagram, hidden dry branch Ji, riding the Azure Dragon; the final transmission is still Chen, hidden dry branch Ji, riding the Azure Dragon.

Chen Gongxian said: This case can certainly be cleared up and resolved. When it reaches the capital, the case will be settled before the trial begins. Because the Month General is riding on the Azure Dragon and is placed over the Day Stem and Day Branch (this is the Eight Special Lesson, where the Month General in the辰 position rides the Azure Dragon and is placed over the stem and branch). The Gou Chen also generates the Day Stem (the Gou Chen is riding on the卯, and the卯 wood generates the丁 fire). The official ghost falls into an empty and hidden position (the亥 and子 official ghosts are placed over the寅 and卯, but they fall into the旬空). Therefore, the case can be clarified and resolved.

He again cast a divination for Zhou Xianggong to see what would happen. He casually took thirty-two pieces of chess, divided them by twelve, and there remained eight. The ones he drew were exactly this divination. He then said: The day stem falls on Jichou, which is the墓 of the day stem (the墓 of Ding fire is in Xu, and Xu is directly on Chou). The year stem is also involved in the Three Punishments (the birth stem is Xu, the heavenly stem is Wei, and Xu and Wei are in mutual punishment). Moreover, the birth stem is Yin, which is far from the day stem. How could there be no guilt? Later, Zhou Xianggong was executed. When Li Zicheng captured Beijing, Shengshun Bai managed to escape and returned home himself.

On Dingwei day, divination for the local examination (in the year Jimao of the Qianlong era, August, by the herdsman's verification)

In the year Jia Mao of the Qianlong era, on the 8th month, 4th day of Ding Wei, the divination was cast using the Month General Chen placed on the hour of Wei. The person consulted was born in the year Guimao, aged thirty-seven, and was asking about the provincial examination. This entry is from the "Pastoral Divination Verification." The used lesson is exactly the same as the previous one, where Sheng Shun Bai consulted. The celestial and earthly plates form a circle starting with "Gou, Long" (Gou Chen, Azure Dragon); the next is "Liuxi (Liu He) Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Tian Kong"; on the left side "Zhu (Zhu Que) Chou" faces the right side "Wu, Hu (Bai Hu)"; "She (Teng She) Zi" faces "Wei, Chang (Tai Chang)"; the lower row is "Gui (Gui Ren) Hai, Xu, You, Shen, Xuan (Xuan Wu)"; ending with "Hou, Yin" (Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin). The lower gods of the four lessons are arranged from right to left as "Chen Wei Chen Ding," and the upper gods are "Chou Chen Chou Chen," each accompanied by "Zhu, Long, Zhu, Long." The three transmissions are Hai, Chen, Chen: the first transmission Hai is the official ghost爻, hidden dry branch Xin, accompanied by the nobleman; the middle and final transmissions are both Chen, which are the son and grandson爻, hidden dry branch Ji, accompanied by Azure Dragon.

Wang Mufu said: The nobleman, the day's virtue and the official star all entered the three transmissions, while the azure dragon, heavenly joy and the sun fell into the final transmission. Although their energy is insufficient, they are all auspicious deities related to official rank. However, this examination still indicates failure to pass. Why? Because the year's stem and the native's stem both fell into the empty period, so even if the official rank arrives, who will receive it? Therefore, when divining matters, the year's stem and the native's stem should not fall into the empty period. On the seventh day, the list was published, and indeed he did not pass.
