When encountering a day marked as "Jianxie" (evil and deceitful), if the hour falls on Chen or Wei and there is a bird calling on the roof, those with the auspicious energies of "Wang" (kingly) and "Xiang" (prosperous) should be interpreted as the arrival of officials to arrest deceitful people; those with the declining energies of "Xiu" (rest), "Fei" (decline), "Qiu" (captivity), and "Si" (death) indicate the rise of disputes and gossip. If the hour falls on Yin or Wu and there is a bird calling on the roof, it signifies that a modest gentleman is discussing immoral matters. If the hour falls on a broad and open position, it indicates matters of drinking and eating along with private and secretive affairs. If the hour falls on Chou or Xu, it indicates the arrival of officials to investigate private conspiracies. If the hour falls on Shen or Zi, it indicates schemes, conflicts, and theft. If the hour falls on Hai or Mao, it indicates private matters and conflicts involving thieves and weapons.

On the day of "Tanlang" (Star of Romance and Desire), if the time falls in Shen or Zi and a bird calls from the roof, those with the "Wang" (Dominance) or "Xiang" (Prosperity) strong energy should be interpreted as a group of thieves attacking. Those with "Xiu" (Rest), "Fei" (Decline), "Qiu" (Captivity), or "Si" (Death) weak energy should indicate a theft incident. If the time falls in Yin or Wu and a bird calls from the roof, it indicates that a virtuous person is discussing an attack. If the time falls in Si or You and a bird calls from the roof, it indicates a dispute over food and drink. If the time falls in Chou, Xu, Chen, or Wei and a bird calls from the roof, it indicates disputes among women and theft by a group of thieves. If the time falls in Hai or Mao and a bird calls from the roof, and it is accompanied by "Wang" or "Xiang" strong energy, it indicates a conflict among thieves fighting over property.

On days of "Yin Zei" (shadowy villains), if the time falls on亥 or 卯 and a bird calls from the roof, those in the "Wang" (kingly) or "Xiang" (prosperous) phase will experience a major battle among villains; those in the "Xiu" (resting), "Fei" (declining), "Qiu" (captured), or "Si" (dead) phases will face large-scale fights and injuries. If the time falls on巳 or 酉 and a bird calls from the roof, there will be incidents of violence due to drinking and eating. If the time falls on丑 or 戌 and a bird calls from the roof, there will be conflicts between officials and thieves. If the time falls on寅, 午, 辰, or 未 and a bird calls from the roof, there will be cases of women's private affairs leading to injuries. If the time falls on申 or 子 and a bird calls from the roof, there will be conflicts among thieves involving robbery and plunder.

Whenever there is a day of hidden malevolence, if a group of birds flies by or a whirlwind, typhoon comes from the directions of the four seasons (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei), and the hour falls also in the directions of the four seasons, there must be an act of search and capture. This should be judged according to the opening and closing of the city gates; if it is a 'prison' day, the event occurs on nearby roads. Suppose today the wind arises from the market or birds fly in from the directions of the four seasons, immediately there will be a search and capture. To determine who is being captured: if the hour falls on Chou or Xu, it is the capture of an enemy; if it falls on Chen or Wei, it is the capture of a thief or murderer. This type of divination indicates that the event will happen immediately, differing from the timing method of Fengjiao divination.

Divination on the Eighth Twenty-second: Eight Directions and Violent Winds

The north belongs to the trigram Kan, which represents water. The wind that arises from the north is called Guangmo Wind, and it governs the forty-five days following the winter solstice. Jing Fang said: If a violent wind arises from the north during any of the four seasons, it indicates the emergence of bandits and the mobilization of troops throughout the country. It also causes people to suffer from damp diseases, phlegm accumulation, and vaginal discharges, making their daily lives inconvenient. (Since the north is associated with the trigram Kan, which signifies bandits, military actions are likely to arise; as Kan represents water dampness, it is connected to disorders of the lower body involving dampness.)

The Northeast direction belongs to the trigram Gen (Mountain), and the wind coming from there is called Tiaofeng (also known as Yanfeng). It governs the forty-five days following the Beginning of Spring. There is a saying: when this wind arises, ghosts and spirits walk upon the path of human beings, often causing droughts and epidemics, and it presages flooding throughout the land, causing people to suffer from diarrhea and changes in their appearance. (At the transition between winter and spring, all things undergo transformation and change.) The East direction belongs to the trigram Zhen (Thunder), and the wind coming from there is called Mingshu Feng (also known as Gou Feng). It governs the forty-five days following the Vernal Equinox. Jingfang said: this wind presages the migration of people, the outbreak of bandits who fight and seize each other, the wind spreading throughout the land, drought and darkness in the sky, frost and cold descending, leading to a great famine, causing people to suffer from joint diseases and inability to bend or stretch their limbs. (This is because thunder begins to stir and the energy of wood begins to grow strong.)

The southeast direction belongs to the trigram Xun (Wind), known as the "Clear and Bright Wind" (also called the "Scenic Wind"). It governs the forty-five days following the beginning of summer. Jing Fang said: this wind indicates that the people will suffer from diarrhea and dysentery, and women in childbirth may suddenly fall ill, leading to death and funerals. The southern direction belongs to the trigram Li (Fire), known as the "Scenic Wind" (also called the "Minister Wind"), which governs the forty-five days following the summer solstice. If this wind arises during this period, it signifies fire disasters, drought in the following year, and people experiencing sudden heat, skin sores, and blindness in the eyes. (Since the trigram Li belongs to fire, the blindness is due to heat affecting the eyes.)

The southwest direction belongs to the trigram "Kun" (Earth), and the wind is called "Liang Feng" (Cool Wind), also referred to as "Jian Feng" (Advice Wind) or "Zhen Feng" (Gale). It governs the forty-five days following the beginning of autumn. When this wind arises, armies throughout the land are mobilized, the sun and moon lose their brightness, and people cannot swallow food. The waist, spine, shoulders, back, thighs, and knees all swell and ache. (The trigram "Kun" represents the people, hence it governs military movements; the waning of yang energy causes the sun and moon to lose their light; the wood energy has aged, thus causing these kinds of illnesses.) The western direction belongs to the trigram "Dui" (Lake), and the wind is called "Chang He Feng" (Gate Wind), also known as "Piao Feng" (Drifting Wind). It governs the forty-five days following the autumn equinox. Jing Fang said: This wind presages autumn drought and frost, military movements throughout the land, solar and lunar eclipses, and people suffering from sores and skin diseases. (The trigram "Dui" signifies destruction, hence the sun and moon are eclipsed and people suffer from malignant sores.)

The northwest belongs to the Trigram Qian (Heaven), and the wind is called "Bu Zhou Feng" (the Wind that Does Not Reach). It governs the forty-five days following the Beginning of Winter, and it presages great famine throughout the land. Jing Fang said: there will be bandits attacking each other, many people suffering from boils and sores, many people fleeing, epidemics spreading, and many deaths. Prayers to ghosts and spirits will not be answered, the earth's energy will tremble, the sun and moon will lose their color, and people will suffer from scabies, leprosy, and other malignant sores. (Since the Qian direction corresponds to the Encampment Mansion and the Wall Mansion, it is associated with epidemic diseases.)

Ancient methods used the eight seasonal divisions to predict events, and if a violent wind arose from a particular direction, they would immediately use that direction to make a prediction. Jing Fang said: the signs of violent winds from the eight directions and the alternative names of the winds associated with the eight trigrams are as follows. In spring, the wind appears white; in summer, it appears black; in autumn, it appears red; in winter, it appears yellow. All of these are ominous signs, indicating rebellion from the lower ranks against the upper, and warfare breaking out everywhere. Each should be predicted according to the day branch corresponding to the direction. The wind from the Qian direction is called "Gaozhe Feng" (also known as "Chong Feng"). The wind from the Kan direction is called "Dagang Feng." The wind from the Gen direction is called "Xiong Feng." The wind from the Zhen direction is called "Yinger Feng." The wind from the Xun direction is called "Daweir Feng" (sometimes referred to as "Xiaoweir Feng"). The wind from the Li direction is called "Daweir Feng." The wind from the Kun direction is called "Jian Feng" (also known as "Miyou Feng"). The wind from the Dui direction is called "Xiaoweir Feng."

The ancient method of "eight winds" refers to strong winds that upturn roofs, snap trees, and cause flying sand and stones, with no rain falling for three days. This is called an inversion of the four seasons' energy, and it can be used for divination. Wind belongs to yang, and rain belongs to yin. When yang energy becomes angry, it is harmonized by yin energy, so wind disasters are naturally resolved by rain. As for the method of divining the eight winds after the first day of the first lunar month, this is a key technique of the farmers in the state of Qi, used to determine which of the five grains should be planted.

Another passage comes from the "Celestial Officials" section of the "Book of Han": if the wind comes from the Qian direction (Northwest), it indicates concern about military affairs; if it comes from the Kan direction (Due North), it signifies great flooding and water surges, leading to floods; if it comes from the Gen direction (Northeast), it indicates the spread of epidemics among people and locust plagues that year; if it comes from the Zhen direction (Due East), it suggests excessive yang energy and dryness, resulting in a severe drought throughout the year and funerals; if it comes from the Xun direction (Southeast), it indicates a year with frequent winds that damage the five grains; if it comes from the Li direction (Due South), it indicates a year of drought and extreme heat, with many fires; if it comes from the Kun direction (Southwest), it indicates many diseases among people and many deaths on the roads; if it comes from the Dui direction (Due West), it indicates military conflicts and warfare that year.

The "Three Harmonies and Eight Angles Wind" chart: the eight angles are successively named as辱, 杀, 反, 吉, 抵, 诬诞, 忿, 争 (in the following explanations they are referred to as 辱, 杀, 反, 吉, 抵, 诞, 忿, 争). On days of 申, 子, 辰, the eight angles are successively paired with 艮, 震, 巽, 离, 坤, 兑, 乾, 坎; on days of 巳, 酉, 丑, they are successively paired with 巽, 离, 坤, 兑, 乾, 坎, 艮, 震; on days of 亥, 卯, 未, they are successively paired with 乾, 坎, 艮, 震, 巽, 离, 坤, 兑; on days of 寅, 午, 戌, they are successively paired with 坤, 兑, 乾, 坎, 艮, 震, 巽, 离. When predicting the wind, first determine which group of Three Harmonies the day belongs to, then refer to the chart to find which angle corresponds to the direction the wind comes from.

A wind coming from the "Good" direction indicates that an imperial decree of grace will be issued, removing misfortunes from the people and bringing joy; if encountered on the way, one will meet a virtuous gentleman who prepares food and wine to offer. This refers to a wind that comes directly and rotates back, and the method of divination is the same when it enters a household. A wind coming from the "Opposition" direction indicates disputes and violations of reason: on a "King" day, the influence falls on the Nobleman; on a "Minister" day, it falls on an average person; on a "Rest" day, it falls on a commoner; on a "Captivity" day or a "Death" day, it affects the entire clan.

When the wind comes from the directions of Zhen, Xun, and Li, the defending side will win. If the wind comes from the directions of Qian, Kan, Gen, Dui, and Kun, the attacking side will win, and both armies are evenly matched. If the wind comes from the position of 'Zhechong' (which refers to the position opposite to the main direction), it indicates that the enemy's supplies and equipment will be captured. If the wind comes from the Kun direction, the planned affair will not succeed.

The eight winds divination on the first day of the first lunar month: The "Book of Han · Records of Astronomy" says: In order to predict the good or bad harvest of the year, one must carefully observe the beginning of the year. The first is on the day of the winter solstice, when the vital energy of growth begins to stir. The second is the day after the sacrificial rites of the twelfth lunar month, when people bid farewell to the old year, gather together for meals, and thus stimulate the yang energy, so it is called "the beginning of the year." The third is the morning of the first day of the first lunar month. The fourth is the beginning of the year established by the emperor, which is the start of the four seasons. These four days are the days for observation and divination.

On the first day of the first lunar month and the day of Start of Spring, if the wind comes from the south, it indicates a severe drought; from the southwest, a minor drought; from the west, there will be military conflicts; from the northwest, there will be a good harvest of millet; if there is also light rain at the same time, it indicates the outbreak of military actions. If the wind comes from the north, it indicates a moderate harvest; from the northeast, a good harvest; from the east, there will be a great flood; from the southeast, there will be many diseases among the people and a poor harvest. The winds from the eight directions should be compared with their opposing directions. The direction with more wind will prevail over the one with less wind, and the direction with stronger wind will prevail over the one with weaker wind. Also, according to the time of day, the five grains are assigned as follows: from dawn to breakfast time, the wind should be from wheat; from breakfast to noon, from millet; from midday to the time of the tiger (申), from millet; from the time of the tiger to sunset, from beans; from sunset to dusk, from hemp.

There are also specific names for the winds from the four directions: the east wind is called 「Gu Feng」, the south wind is called 「Kai Feng」, the west wind is called 「Tai Feng」 (another version says 「Liang Feng」), and the north wind is called 「Liang Feng」. Wind coming from the north is favorable for the guest side; wind coming from the south is auspicious for the host side; wind coming from the west is favorable for the guest side; wind coming from the east is favorable for the host side; wind coming from the northwest is favorable for the guest side; wind coming from the southeast is favorable for the host side; wind coming from the southwest will cause matters to fail; wind coming from the northeast is unfavorable for both the host and the guest sides.

The wind comes from the Qian direction, which is the northwest, indicating light rain and military conflicts arising from the Rongdi, meaning the Hu people. If the wind comes from the north Kan direction, it indicates much water and heavy rain. If the wind comes from the northeast Gen direction, it indicates a bountiful harvest. If the wind comes from the Qian direction, it indicates a cold winter for the whole year, with the prices of metal and iron doubling; if the wind comes from the Kan direction, it indicates that beans will not bear fruit, and there will be famine and epidemic diseases; if the wind comes from the Gen direction, it indicates that summer crops will not mature, and rice prices will rise by half; if the wind comes from the Zhen direction, it indicates that all five grains will be abundant, and there will be no thieves; if the wind comes from the Xun direction, it indicates that pests will proliferate, and there will be frequent cold waves in April; if the wind comes from the Li direction, it indicates that in May there will be first flooding and then drought; if the wind comes from the Kun direction, it indicates that there will be small water disasters, and many people will suffer from malaria and plague; if the wind comes from the Dui direction, it indicates that there will be military conflicts, a cold spring, and the country will have troubles in August.

If the wind comes from the Xun direction, it indicates that in September, strong winds will cause various fruits to fall. If the wind comes from the Li direction, it indicates that the five grains will mature. If the wind comes from the Kun direction, it indicates that there will be much rain and flooding in June. On the day of the Beginning of Autumn, if white clouds appear and light rain falls, it is a good omen; however, if it remains clear and sunny, it indicates that crops will not mature properly. Wind coming from the Qian direction indicates extreme cold and frequent rain; wind from the Kan direction suggests many fogs, snow, and severe cold in winter; wind from the Gen direction indicates that the autumn climate is unbalanced; wind from the Zhen direction suggests frequent rain and hail in autumn, with unexpected flowering of plants; wind from the Xun direction indicates sudden military disturbances within the territory; wind from the Li direction suggests military operations are unfavorable and there will be drought; wind from the Kun direction indicates that the five grains will mature; wind from the Dui direction suggests the initiation of military campaigns and generals going to war.
