Divination on Entering a Military Camp, Number 87
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
When facing an enemy army in a standoff, if a whirlwind enters the camp, breaking weapons and damaging tents, it certainly indicates that thieves have infiltrated the military camp, and the commander will die. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches each have fixed numbers: the numbers for Zi, Wu, Jia, and Si are nine. If the day branch is in the "Wang" or "Xiang" (strong and prosperous) phase, multiply this number by ten; if it is in the "Xiu" or "Fei" (resting and declining) phase, use the number as is; if it is in the "Qiong" or "Si" (captured and dying) phase, halve the number. (The method of divination through bird calls is the same.) The numbers for directions are: East corresponds to three and eight, South to two and seven, West to four and nine, North to one and six, and Center to five and ten. These are the numbers of the Five Phases, which can be used to calculate distances or the number of thieves.
To determine the direction from which the wind originates, the method is: on days of the Shang tone or the Jue tone, observe from which direction the wind arises; on days of the Gong tone, Yu tone, or Zhi tone, observe whether the wind is on the 'punished' side or the 'punished' side. Determine the time of occurrence based on the direction of the wind, for example, if the wind comes from the east, the occurrence will be on days of Jia or Yi, or寅 or卯. (The same applies to other directions.) Then observe the qi that the wind carries: if it carries the 'king' qi, it indicates the ruler; if it carries the 'minister' qi, it indicates the minister; if it carries the 'discarded' qi, it indicates the officials and common people; if it carries the 'captured' qi, it indicates the common people of low status. If it carries the Tai Su, there will certainly be an imperial decree for transfer within three months. If it carries the annual punishment, monthly punishment, daily punishment, or hourly punishment, it indicates misfortune. If it carries the 'king's tomb' qi, there will be mourning within three days. If it carries the 'captured' qi and coincides with the day branch, there will certainly be a major disaster. Take the five tones of the day as the guest and the five tones of the land as the host, and observe which one is stronger, also considering the direction from which the wind comes. On days of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, if the wind comes from the four cardinal directions, observe the path it takes. If the day has qi, use the day's tone for judgment; if the day does not have qi, use the day branch's tone for judgment.
Wind coming from the east should occur on the days of Jiayin and Yimao; if it changes direction to come from the west, the occurrence should be on Jiashen and Yiyou. If it changes to come from the north, the occurrence should be on Jiazi and Yichou. If it changes to come from the south, the occurrence should be on Jiawu and Yiwei. Suppose today is Gengshen, and the wind originally comes from the west, but shortly afterwards changes to come from the east, the occurrence should be on Gengyin and Xinmao. If it changes to come from the north, the occurrence should be on the Zi and Chou of Geng and Xin. If it changes to come from the south, the occurrence should be on the Chen and Si of Geng and Xin. If the current hour falls on Xu, the occurrence should be on Jia and Yi. If the hour falls on Yin or Mao, it will occur immediately. If the hour falls on Wu, it will also occur immediately. If the hour falls on Mao, it will occur within the nine heavens, together with Yin and Shen, because Mao is of the same type as them. If today is Gengchen, and the hour falls on Shen, You, or Geng and Xin, it will occur immediately. If the hour falls on the seasonal positions, it is said that it cannot occur immediately, but must wait for the addition of three days of the same type.
Whenever there is a sudden wind within a palace or courtyard, one should examine whether the energy of the day branch is stronger than the energy of the hour. If both are the same, then the hour determines the time of occurrence. For example, today is the Xinyou day, and the hour extends from Wu to You, so the time of occurrence is set in the fourth month, which is a case where the day and hour are in harmony. (Therefore, when there is mutual control and similarity, whether a decree is issued or not will result in different outcomes.) On days of the Shang tone, the verification will be found in the lower part of the wind. The signs of mutual control, movement, and conflict between Shang and Jue tones become more evident. One should first verify using the elements of metal, wood, fire, water, and earth associated with the earthly branches, and then use the six emotions to determine what kind of event it is. First, examine the emotion of the day, then combine it with the emotion of the hour. For example, today is the Jiazi day, which belongs to the Shang tone, and the hour falls on Shen and Zi, which belong to the Star of Romance and Desire, while Chen belongs to deceit and is also the Shang tone, indicating mutual harm, fighting, and injury. (The rest can be inferred in the same way.) Whenever there is a sudden wind within a palace or courtyard, if the energy of the day branch is stronger than the energy of the hour, it indicates that outsiders are causing harm from within. If Shang tone and Jue tone are present along with the Star of Romance and Desire and the emotion of hidden malice, there will be mutual killing and injury, with no auspiciousness. Because the energy of the day is stronger than that of the hour, the hour has no power to counteract it. However, this evil situation can only manifest if there is 'energy' present.
The Eighth十八 Method of the Five Tones for Guest and Master
The five tones of the day branch are used as the "guest," while the five tones of the hour when the wind begins are used as the "host." On days of the Six Jia, the day stem is the guest, and the fixed direction of the stem's own position is the host. All twelve earthly branches can serve as the host. For example, if today's day branch belongs to "Shang" (metal), then the guest is metal. If the wind begins at the hour of Hai, which belongs to the wood triple combination of Hai-Mao-Wei and is associated with "Jue" (wood), then Jue wood is the host. The guest is Shang metal, which can control wood, showing that the outcome between host and guest depends on whether their five elements are mutually supportive or mutually controlling. Another example: today is Jiazi day, and the nayin sound element of Jiazi belongs to "Shang" (metal), so the guest is metal. If the wind begins at the hour of Yin, which belongs to the fire triple combination of Yin-Wu-Xu and is associated with "Zhi" (fire), then Zhi fire is the host. Fire can control metal, so the host defeats the guest. (All other situations are handled in the same way.) If the wind also comes from the Yin position, then there is a double layer of fire energy, and the host achieves a decisive victory. Following this standard step by step is the method.
Wind coming from the direction that is in conflict with the time of the wind's rise indicates a great victory for the attacking army; wind coming from the direction conflicting with the day branch indicates a great victory for the defending army. When two armies face each other, the one that initiates the attack is considered the guest army, and the one that responds later is considered the host army. In a confrontation between two people, the one who moves first is the guest, and the one who remains still is the host. Those coming from outside are considered the guest, and those defending within are considered the host. The side whose Five Phases are in command and have strength will win, while the side that is declining or weak will lose.
The eighth十九th chapter on wind omens concerning the invasion of the four directions and the barbarians:
壬辰是主東方,水裡,從貪狼來,從北方,七日至九日,此東方海賊動,期五十日。乙未主南方夷,此日從未來,七日,南夷反叛,內侵郡國,期七十日。壬戌主西羌,此日從戌來,大怒折木,七日已上,西羌叛,期五十日。癸丑主北方夷,此日從丑來,七日、九日,北方大兵攻人,近八日,遠二十日。
On Renchen day, the affairs of the east are in charge, and this will be verified in water; if the wind blows from the direction of the "Star of Romance and Desire" and comes from the north, blowing continuously for seven to nine days, this indicates that pirates on the eastern sea will rise up, and the event will occur within fifty days. On Yiwei day, the affairs of the south are in charge, and if the wind blows from the position of Wei for seven consecutive days, the southern夷 people will rebel and invade the internal counties and states, and the event will occur within seventy days. On Renxu day, the affairs of the west are in charge, and if the wind blows from the position of Xu, with a fierce wind strong enough to break trees, blowing for more than seven days, the western Qiang people will rebel, and the event will occur within fifty days. On Guichou day, the affairs of the north are in charge, and if the wind blows from the position of Chou for seven to nine days, there will be a large army coming from the north to attack; the event will occur within eight days if it is near, or within twenty days if it is far.
Usually observe on the days of Renshen, Renzi, and Renchen: if there is wind blowing from the Zi direction, continuing for more than three days with clear skies, this indicates a large group of water-based bandits intending to attack the marquises' states. If it rains within three days, there will be no incident. However, if on the fourth day there is a sudden wind blowing from the Shen, Zi, Hai, or Mao directions, continuing for seven days, then certainly there will be a group of bandits from outside the territory joining the barbarians to invade the commanderies and states.
This is the day branch to which the king, marquises, and officials below belong. In spring, the day of寅belongs to the empress. On this day, if there is a strong wind at noon that overturns houses and breaks trees, and the wind comes from the午and未directions, continuing for more than five days, the empress will be executed. If the wind is mild, the empress will only have disputes and discord. The nine heavens will confirm this within a short time, or within ninety days. If after the wind stops it rains heavily, this divination does not hold, and no inference should be made.
On the Chou day in spring, the Grand General is in charge. If there is a strong wind and heavy rain on that day, overturning houses and breaking trees, and the wind comes from the Chou direction, continuing for more than four days, then Chou is in charge and the Grand General will be celebrated and rewarded. If Chou is weak, declining, and without strength, the Grand General will be punished. If the wind is sudden and fierce with an unusually cold temperature, the commander will face troubles. The effects will be seen within eight days or up to eighty days. If the wind stops and rain follows, with the weather becoming mild, it is a good omen.
On a Dingsi day in spring, the Three Dukes are assigned to the trigram of Wind. The wind comes from the position of Chou and stops at the position corresponding to the Three Dukes. If the sky is clear and bright, the Three Dukes will be promoted and celebrated. If the wind is cold and sudden, and the sunlight is dim and unclear, the Three Dukes will be dismissed from office and punished.

In spring, the heavenly stem Jia is considered the heavenly sovereign; in summer, Bing is the heavenly sovereign; in autumn, Geng is the heavenly sovereign; and in winter, Ren is the heavenly sovereign. Whenever the wind blows from the direction of the heavenly sovereign, the official position corresponding to where the wind stops is where an imperial edict will be issued. If the wind comes from the direction of the current season's sovereign and the wind is clear and smooth, it is a sign of promotion. However, if the wind is cold and sudden, the sky is gloomy and the wind carries dampness, it is a sign of trouble and punishment. Rain indicates that matters will be resolved; if after the rain, a cold wind arises, it means the matter has not been resolved. If the wind merely passes by without stopping, it also indicates that the matter will not be resolved.
Winds that blow only for half a day or a day should be calculated according to the near term. Winds that blow continuously for more than three days should be calculated according to the distant term. If the wind comes suddenly and strongly, calculate according to the near term. If the wind arises slowly and gradually becomes fierce, calculate according to the distant term. On the days of Wuzi, Wuwu, Jiachen, and Jiaxu, winds from the corresponding directions indicate the arrival of imperial envoys, as well as official documents from governors, magistrates, and assistants. If the wind comes from the appropriate direction on these days and the day branch is strong and vigorous, it signifies promotion. If the day branch is weak and declining, it signifies dismissal from office.
Divination method for official promotions, dismissals, and criminal cases, number ninety.
Suppose it is the day of Jiachen in spring, and the wind comes from the Chen position and blows for three days, then stops at the Jia position, this indicates that an imperial envoy will be summoned and appointed as a Minister of State. Suppose the wind comes from the Jia position and blows for three days, then stops at the Chen position, this indicates that the envoy will be promoted to a county governor with an annual salary of two thousand stones; the near effect will be realized within three days, while the distant effect will be realized within twenty days.
On the day when each official takes charge, if the wind comes from the Xun direction and stops at the Chen position, it indicates that the official will be promoted to the rank of governor with an annual salary of two thousand stones. If it stops at the Chou position, the good fortune will befall the county magistrate, county chief, and the chancellor of a feudal state. If it stops at the position of the ministers of state, the official will have good fortune, and the good fortune will be attributed to the ministers. If the wind is clear and mild in these situations, they are all auspicious signs of promotion and celebration. However, if the wind is unusually cold and sudden, it indicates that the official will report to impeach the Three Excellencies, the officials with an annual salary of two thousand stones, and the county magistrates and county chiefs, who will be dismissed and punished. The consequences will occur within three days at the earliest and up to thirty days at the latest. If there is worry and rain occurs, the worry will be resolved. If there is celebration and rain occurs, the celebration will be doubled with rewards.
On the Bingchen day, the corresponding official is the governor of the commandery, that is, the commandery governor. If there is a wind blowing from the Chen position on this day, and it lasts for two days before stopping at the Jun position, it indicates that the commandery governor will be summoned to the capital to take up a new appointment. If on the Bingchen day there is a wind blowing from the Chen position and it stops at the Wu position, and the wind is clear and pleasant, it signifies that the commandery governor will recommend an imperial envoy to the court. If the wind is cold and sudden, it means the commandery governor will report the governor of the commandery's inspector, and both will accuse each other. The side that is strong and has energy on the day branch will prevail, while the side that is weak and lacks energy will suffer misfortune. If the wind stops at the Chen position, the matter will be reported successfully; if it does not stop at the Chen position, it will instead result in the person being punished. The effect will be verified within nine days, or within forty-five days.
On the five days of Yichou, Dingchou, Jichou, Xinchou, and Guichou, county magistrates, county governors, and ministers of the feudal states present their memorials. On the day of the five Chous, there is a wind with a commanding presence coming from the Chou direction, which is unusually cold. If this wind stops at the Chen position, it indicates that the county magistrate, county governor, or feudal minister is reporting the governor. If it stops at the Wu position, it indicates reporting the imperial envoy. If it stops at the position of the Three Dukes, it indicates reporting the ministers of state. These all belong to cases where subordinates report superiors and vice versa, with the outcome determined by whether the wind is cold or mild.
Five days of the亥 (Hai) are in charge of the officials known as "Cheng" in various government offices. On the day of Hai, the wind comes from the Hai position. When Hai is strong and active, the Cheng will be promoted and celebrated; when Hai is weak and inactive, the Cheng will be dismissed. To determine which level of Cheng is affected, observe how long the wind lasts: if the wind stops after half a day, it refers to the Cheng of the commandery; if it stops after two days, it refers to the Cheng of the prefecture; if it stops after three days, it refers to the Cheng of the state; if it stops after four days, it refers to the chief official of a marquis or duke; if it stops after five days, it refers to the Cheng of the Ministry. If it is the day of Dinghai, then the affected official will be among those holding rank above two thousand stones. Thus, by observing the wind, one can determine which level of Cheng will be involved.
Five days of Wu correspond to the position of the military commander. On the day of Bingxu, the wind comes from the Wu direction. When Wu is in its prime, the military commander is promoted; when Wu is declining and weak, the military commander is dismissed. For county-level offices, they correspond to the position of the county commander: if the wind only blows for half a day or even for a short while and then stops, it indicates the county commander is affected; if the wind is cold and sudden, it signifies dismissal; if the wind is mild, it indicates promotion and celebration. (Other situations follow the same pattern.)
The Ninth十一 Edict on Waiting for the Imperial Decree
On days belonging to the Yang Palace, if the wind blows from the direction of the Yang Trigram, it indicates an imperial decree is coming. To determine the type of decree, observe the hour when the wind arrives and judge accordingly. If the hour is寅 or 午, it signifies a decree concerning promotion or appointment. If the hour is 己 or 酉, it indicates a decree of pardon or postponement of punishment. If the hour is 丑 or 戌, it refers to a decree summoning someone to the imperial court for consultation. If the hour is 申 or 子, it relates to the collection of taxes. If the hour is 亥 or 卯, it indicates a decree accepting memorials and showing respect to the elderly. If the hour is 辰 or 未, it refers to a decree concerning the marriage of a daughter or the transmission of orders via relay stations. All these are expected to take effect within nine days or forty-five days.
On days belonging to the Yang Palace, the wind comes from the 'Crime' direction and stops at the 'Merit' direction, with an extremely fierce wind. This signifies that higher officials will arrest lower officials. Such wind also indicates that superiors will question subordinates, and the subordinates will be questioned and provide evidence but are not guilty. If the wind comes from the direction of the Emperor's position or from the Zi or Chou directions, it is a sign of an imperial edict. If the time of the wind also falls on the Zi or Chou directions, the omen becomes even clearer. Then observe the metal, wood, water, fire, and earth elements of the day's stem and branch, and see whether they are in a position of mutual generation (favorable) or mutual control (unfavorable). Based on this, we can determine the intention above and know what the edict is about. If the wind comes from the 'Affiliation' direction, it is a sign of documents from ministers and high officials.
In spring, the position of Jia is considered the Son of Heaven; in summer, Bing; in autumn, Geng; and in winter, Ren. One should watch these positions. If the wind comes from there, it signifies the Son of Heaven's will has arrived. If the time of the wind is combined with 'justness,' it is the true command of the Son of Heaven. If the time is combined with 'wrongdoing,' then someone is falsely claiming the imperial decree, and it should not be trusted lightly.

On the day of Jiayin in spring, the time of wind is added to Shen. The wind comes from the Jia position, blows for three days and stops at Shen. (Another interpretation says the wind must blow from the Ren direction to indicate a great amnesty.) If the wind starts at申 or子, it indicates official documents allowing redemption and reduction of punishment, with the effect expected within sixty days. On aRenzi day in winter, if the wind starts at巳, blowing from the丙 direction, there will be a great amnesty.
Wait for the great army to rise, the ninety-third sign.
Whenever the day is a Shang day or a Jue day, if the wind blows from the directions of 'Jianxie', 'Yinzei', and 'Tanlang', the sky becomes pale and murky, dark and obscure, and continues for more than three days. This indicates that a large army is about to rise, with the effect appearing within thirty-five days at the nearest, or seventy days at the furthest. Whenever the day is a Gong day, if a strong wind blows from the Jue direction, it is cold and fierce. This signifies that a large army is about to surround the city. If by noon the wind is so strong that it overturns houses and breaks trees, the city will certainly be captured, no later than nine days or eighteen days.
Whenever the feather day occurs, a strong wind suddenly arises and the sky becomes dark, the sun loses its brightness, thick fog covers everything, and this indicates that the city will be surrounded by troops. Whenever the horn day occurs, the time of wind is added to the hour of noon, and the wind blows from the horn direction at noon or midnight, breaking trees, indicating that military actions will be launched. The enemy army will definitely encamp around the city, and the defending forces should go out to avoid danger. The appointed time is nine heavens, and at that time it will certainly arrive.
Whenever a day of the Metal element occurs, a strong wind breaks trees, blowing from the Zi or Wu directions during the night or noon, causing the sunlight to be dim and unclear. This situation is unfavorable for the army, leading to internal collapse and the inability to hold cities. It will come to pass within seven days, or up to seventy days if it takes longer. (Another account says ninety days, or thirty days, all of which are considered signs of military uprising.) Whenever the day is in the seasons of the Earthly Branches Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, and the Nayin sound element belongs to Metal, a strong wind breaks trees, blowing from the directions of the four seasons. The wind occurs at the hour of Zi or Wu. This indicates that rebels and bandits from outside will gather, uniting with foreign forces to attack. Passes, bridges, and roads will be cut off, and this will come to pass within seventy days.
When the great army is about to disperse, it is the ninety-fourth sign.
When the day is "wide and generous," and the wind comes from the "wide and generous" direction, and the time of the wind also falls on "wide and generous," according to the rules, this omen indicates that a large army will disband. Whenever a day of commerce occurs, the large army is surrounding a city, and the wind comes from the direction of Chou. Chou is precisely the storage place of the metal of commerce. The wind coming from the storage place signifies that the wind is coming from the storage. If this wind continues for three days or more up to seven days, the guest army surrounding the city will withdraw and certainly suffer defeat. The fulfillment of this omen will occur on the seventh or seventeenth day.
When troops have already begun to mobilize and battle is about to take place, one should consult whether the two sides can reconcile. The method is: on that day, the "broad and generous" (宽大) is the main element. The hour of wind (起风的时辰) belongs to "commerce" (商). If the wind comes from the "broad and generous" direction and stops in the "broad and generous" direction, this indicates that a large group of bandits will disperse.
Whenever a day of the Metal element occurs, a strong wind breaks the trees. If the wind blows from the子 position or午 position during the night or at noon, and the sunlight is dim and unclear, this is unfavorable for the army. The army will collapse from within and be unable to hold the city. The near ones will disperse within seven days, while the distant ones within seventy days. After this, one should again observe to see if the troops will disperse. If today is Jiyou day and the Nayin sound element belongs to Metal, and the wind blows from the酉 position for three days or more up to five days, with clear and bright weather, this indicates that the people's gathered troops will disperse. The near ones will disperse within forty days, while the distant ones within seventy days.
Whenever the day belongs to a yin stem, if the wind comes from the Zheng direction, it indicates that foreign troops will withdraw, and the guest army will retreat on its own, not exceeding seventy days. (Another version says seven days.) In general, when predicting the cessation of warfare through wind direction, if the wind is mild and the sky is clear and bright, it signifies that the army will disband. However, if the wind is cold and carries a harsh, oppressive quality, and the sunlight is dim and dark, it indicates that the conflict cannot be resolved, and a battle is certain to occur, with the expected time being seven days. (Another version says seventy days.)
If on a "broad and generous" day, the wind comes from the "broad and generous" and "just" directions, and blows at night but stops during the day, it indicates that the soldiers are leaving on their own, while the general does not wish to cease fighting. If the wind blows during the day and stops at night, it signifies unity between superiors and subordinates. If the sky is gloomy and cold, and the wind is also cold, then even though the day is favorable, it does not count as reconciliation. Only when the wind is warm, gentle, and smooth can true resolution be achieved.
Whenever a day of the commercial (metal) element occurs, a strong wind blows down trees, coming from the Chou and Yin positions, continuing for three days or more up to seven days. This indicates a large army of tens of thousands within a thousand li, facing each other in pairs and then retreating and dispersing on their own. This happens because the commercial element belongs to metal, and the wind is the metal wind. The Yin position belongs to the fire trinity of Yin, Wu, and Xu, and the wind comes from the fire position. Thus, when metal moves, it meets fire, causing the opposing army to disperse on its own, indicating the main army's victory and the guest army's great defeat, with the guest general surely dying. The effect can be seen within seven days, in the middle case within twenty-one days, and in distant cases within seventy days.
Ninety-Fifth: Divination on Fire Blight
Whenever the angle day occurs, there is a strong wind that breaks the trees, blowing from the directions of寅, 申, 丑, and 未, coming and going in sudden bursts. The time when the wind starts is at子, and it happens exactly at midnight, indicating that a fire will break out in palaces and government offices. The days of辰, 午, 酉, and 亥 are days of self-punishment, with the punishment falling on the same position.
On a day of the Earthly Branch Chen, if the time of day also falls on Chen, there will be a fire at the lodging place of a county magistrate of rank two thousand stones in the left area. On a day of the Earthly Branch Wu, if the time of day also falls on Wu, there will be a fire at the office of the commander of the garrison. On a day of the Earthly Branch You, there will be a fire at the main lodging place of a prominent official's residence. On a day of the Earthly Branch Hai, if the time of day also falls on Hai, there will be a fire at the home of a mourning family and the prison. If the wind is unusually cold and fierce, the fire will result in deaths; if the wind is mild, it will only be a flood of water. The fire will occur within three days. If the wind stops and rain follows, the fire will not start. If it does not rain within the three days, the fire will definitely break out.
If the day is one of the four seasonal days, namely辰, 戌, 丑, or 未, and the nayin sound element belongs to the angle (角), with the wind blowing from the directions of the four seasons and stopping at the position of 午, this indicates that the pavilions and inns below and the towns and markets above will catch fire, and disaster reports will arrive together, with the event expected to occur within three days. If it rains, the disaster will not happen. If the day is Bingyin or Dingmao, and the wind blows from the positions of 寅 or 卯, then fire will break out in the city. This is because 丙 and 丁 belong to fire, while 寅 and 卯 belong to wood, and fire will ignite the wood, resulting in two fires burning the same piece of wood, where the wood represents the city. If the wind is cold and sudden, people will be burned to death in the fire, with the event expected to occur within three days. If it rains within the expected period, the disaster will not occur.
On days of亥 or卯, if the nayin sound element belongs to the scale, wind coming from the directions of申,亥, or未 will blow, and the time of the wind is added to申 or子. This indicates thieves setting fires to attack the main house. If the wind is cold and sudden, people may be burned to death, and property will be lost. If the time of the wind is added to「Lianzhen」or「Gongzheng」, it means enemies will have mutual conflicts and killings, which will occur within three days. On days of徵, if the time of the wind also belongs to徵, and the wind comes from the direction of徵, with clear and bright weather, this indicates the arrival of official documents or military orders. If a fire starts accidentally by the people, it is not considered a man-made disaster. The effect will be seen within three days if it is near, and within thirty days if it is far.
The method of divining a fire outbreak is as follows: if it occurs on a day of a Yang stem, and the wind comes from the direction of the Yang trigram, and the wind arises at midnight, these are signs that a fire will break out in the official government buildings in the city. If the wind comes from the direction of the Yin trigram, then the fire will occur in the lower areas such as pavilions, inns, villages, marketplaces, towns, and among the people.
When divining about fire, if the time is Jiyou, it indicates a fire caused by mistake; if the time is "Fairness," it signifies enemies harboring resentment and setting fires against each other; if the time is "Lianzhen," it indicates fires set due to disputes over documents and verbal conflicts; if the time is "Tanlang," it means thieves attacking and burning the main house; if the time is "Yinze," it means thieves attacking each other and setting fires; if the time is "Haoshe," meaning wickedness, it indicates small thieves setting fires due to private matters. If the day branch is in a position of authority or dignity and has strength, it belongs to human-caused fires; if the day branch is in a state of imprisonment or death without strength, and the wind time is added to酉 or Jiao, then it is a fire caused by supernatural forces.
If there is wind on this day and it continues to blow for more than three days, causing the sky to turn yellow and red, this indicates the wind is causing the phenomenon. The wind does not dissipate throughout the night. By the seventh day, this becomes Heavenly Fire. The calamity originates from mountains and spirits, with bright flames burning the palaces of the emperor and the ancestral temples, which catch fire without cause. The fire's glow can be seen for thousands of miles. The effect will manifest within three days if it is nearby, or within thirty days if it is farther away. If the wind stops and heavy rain follows, this prediction does not hold. The method used for predicting fire is the same as that used for predicting messengers and official documents.
