Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
A strange star appeared during the day. The Gan school said: such a star appearing together with the Sun is called "women competing with the Sun for brightness," indicating weakness in military power and strength in cultural education. If it appears over a city, it relates to civil affairs; if it appears over the fields, it relates to military affairs. The fixed stars are not visible. Yang Quan's "Treatise on Things" says: all stars without a name are sometimes visible and sometimes not; only the twenty-eight mansions have fixed positions and degrees, so they are called "fixed stars." The "Zuo Zhuan" records: during the time of Lu Zhuanggong, the fixed stars were not visible, and at midnight, meteors fell like rain. The commentary explains that the fixed stars were not visible because the night sky was too bright. The "Gulang Zhuan" says: the fixed stars that are always in their positions are the symbol of the ruler; when the fixed stars are not visible, it signifies the absence of a ruler. In the fourth year of Taishi during the Western Jin dynasty's Emperor Wu, meteors fell like rain, and the stars flowed westward, which was a sign of the people rebelling against the Eastern Wu and submitting to the Jin dynasty.
Divination of the movement of stars. The "Lüshi Chunqiu" states that in times of extreme chaos, stars and the Big Dipper will waver and move unpredictably. In the first year of Emperor Wen of Han, all the stars in the central sky moved erratically. The emperor consulted the officials who observed the stars, who replied that the movement of stars is a sign of the people's hardship. Later, the court waged wars against the four surrounding tribes, and the people indeed suffered greatly from military conflicts. Jing Fang's "Yi Zhuan" says: stars are the essence of yin and yang, the forms of all things, and the images of the Five Phases. Their forms are in the lower world, while their luminous essence shines in the heavens. The fates of officials are each connected to their respective star mansions. When stars move or deviate from their normal paths, the people will suffer unrest. The falling of a large star signifies the loss of yang energy from its proper place, which is a precursor to calamity. The remedy is: the ruler should repent, reflect on his governance, and take responsibility for his actions. He should reduce labor service, stabilize the state, and bestow fiefs upon meritorious officials. He should prioritize the well-being of the people, and thus the stars of the mansions will return to their proper positions. Jing Fang's "Yi Zhuan" also says: if the ruler does not employ the virtuous, the corresponding celestial omen will be a shower of falling stars.
Divination of strange celestial phenomena. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says:所谓 "妖" refers to transformations caused by the Five Phases' energies and abnormal changes of the Five Stars, each appearing in their respective directions to indicate calamities. By distinguishing them according to the five colors—green, red, yellow, white, and black—one can determine the fortune or misfortune of a particular state, and it is certain to be able to judge. The appearance of an evil star indicates a country without virtue and a state that has lost propriety, bringing famine, warfare, and signs of drought and death. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: whenever an evil star appears, its shape varies, but the resulting calamities are the same. After its appearance, within a year or three years, there will certainly be the disaster of a country's destruction and cities being razed. The ruler of that country will die, rebellion will arise throughout the land, soldiers will die in the wilderness, and corpses will pile up everywhere. The remaining calamities will not dissipate, but will transform into droughts, floods, warfare, famine, and epidemics.
Heavenly Stem: Tian Bang. The Yellow River Chart says: When the spirit of the star of wood (Jupiter) spreads out, it becomes Tian Bang. Ban Gu's Records of Astronomy says: When the star of wood moves beyond its normal path and leans toward the southeast, it becomes Tian Bang. The Shi school says: When Tian Bang appears, the country corresponding to that region will suffer misfortune; great undertakings and military actions should not be carried out. It also says: The effect will be verified within three months, and certainly there will be the defeat of an army and the capture of a city. The Gan school says: When Tian Bang appears, it indicates that a female ruler will take charge of governance.
Divination on the Heavenly Spear. The "Spring Annals Commentary" states: When the planet Jupiter moves retrograde and deviates to the south, after three months, the "Heavenly Spear" appears. This is an omen of excessive yang energy and abnormal occurrences, indicating the collapse of righteousness, the rise of turmoil, military movements, and the extreme brutality of the feudal lords. The country corresponding to the area where the Heavenly Spear appears should not engage in warfare. The "Book of Han, Records of the Heavenly Phenomena" mentions: During the time of Emperor Wen of Han, the Heavenly Spear appeared in the southwest in the evening. The divination text says: This portends military affairs, deaths, and disturbances. In the sixth year of Emperor Wen's reign, in the eleventh month, the Xiongnu invaded Shangjun and Yunzhong, and the Han court mobilized troops to defend the capital. Liu Xiang believed that this celestial phenomenon indicated the rebellion of the seven states of Wu and Chu.
The state emperor. Wu Xian said: The star of the state emperor has a large form and a red color, similar to the Southern Pole Star. The "Spring and Autumn Examination of Mail" said: When the star of the state emperor appears in the southeast, it indicates the rise of military affairs and alarm throughout the country. Sima Biao's "Astronomical Records" said: During the Guanghe period of Emperor Ling of Han, the star of the state emperor appeared in the southeast corner, about one or two zhang high from the ground, resembling a torch. It disappeared after about ten days. The divination text says: The star of the state emperor indicates turmoil, with military actions and funerals both inside and outside the court. Later, Zhang Jiao of the Yellow Turban rebels burned the prefectures and states, and the court sent generals to suppress and pacify them, cutting off more than ten thousand heads.
The Chi You Qi. The Yellow River Chart says that the essence of the Malefic of violence (Mars) disperses and transforms into the Chi You Qi, which resembles a comet but with a curved tail, like a banner. The Sayings of the States says that the Chi You Qi arises from the irregular movement of the five stars. Xia said that if there is no cloud visible in all directions, but only a red cloud appears, that is the Chi You Qi. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says that the Chi You Qi itself resembles a comet but with a curved tail, like a banner, and is about two or three zhang long. When it appears, it indicates that the sovereign will raise great banners and drums, and launch military campaigns in all directions, with great warfare; if not, it indicates great mourning in the state, with the fulfillment period being three years, middle five years, and distant seven years. In the first year of Cao Wei's High Prince Gaoxiang, white vapor rose from the north and south sides, spanning several zhang and spanning the sky. Wang Su said that this was the Chi You Qi, and there would be disorder in the east. Later, Wu Qiuan Jian indeed rebelled in Huainan. The Spring and Autumn Movement of the Stars says that the Chi You Qi invades the Taimei Enclosure, indicating the destruction of laws and order, and the emperor dying in the wild.
Divination on heavenly slander. The Gan school says: The star of heavenly slander appears in the southwest, extending several zhang in length, with sharp ends on both sides, and after its appearance, it moves to different positions. Jing Fang says: Wherever the star of heavenly slander appears overhead, people in that area will slander each other, leading to military calamity, vast areas of scorched land, and widespread bones scattered everywhere. The "Book of Han: Astronomical Records" says: The star of heavenly slander signifies heavenly calamity and loss. (Another interpretation says it signifies military affairs and funerals.)
Xunshi. The Sayuan says: Xunshi arises from the abnormal movement and contraction of the five stars. Wu Xian says: Xunshi appears beside the Big Dipper, resembling a male chicken; when it becomes angry, it has a dark blue color and looks like a turtle lying on the ground. The Chongchun Hetengtu says: a yellow comet splits into Xunshi, which is a sign of establishing a new king, governing chaos and causing violence; once it appears, there will be rebellion among ministers, warfare, and tyranny by the feudal lords, with an expected period of ten years, during which a sage will rise up to wage war, while a group of wicked people will act recklessly. The Chongchun Kaoyi You says: wherever Xunshi shines, there must be a king being destroyed. The Han Tianwen Zhi says: Xunshi resembles a turtle, and once it appears, wicked people will act recklessly. The Xuanming Zhan says: there is a star shaped like a male chicken, with a red-yellow color, called Xunshi; its appearance indicates warfare in the world, and the country will not be at peace, with an expected period of three years.
Heavenly Dog. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Heavenly Dog is formed from the qi of the five stars, appearing in the southwest, formed by the combination of metal and fire qi, and is called Heavenly Dog. Meng Kang says: Heavenly Dog has a tail, with a short comet-like tail beside it, and its lower end resembles a dog crouching to lick blood; when it appears, the army that encounters it will surely suffer defeat. The Shi school says: in the northwest there is a star, three zhang long, appearing as a result of the combination of water and metal qi, called Heavenly Dog; its appearance indicates the outbreak of large-scale warfare, great famine, and people eating people. The Shi school also says: wherever Heavenly Dog falls, there will certainly be a great battle, the army being defeated, generals killed, corpses scattered and blood flowing everywhere, as if eaten by Heavenly Dog. These all verify within one year, some within two years, some within three years, each according to the country corresponding to where Heavenly Dog falls. Xie Meng says: when it appears, it has a red and white color and light; its lower end is small and has no feet; wherever it falls, there will certainly be bloodshed, and the country will change its ruling power.
The Han Astronomical Records state that during the reign of Emperor Ai of Han, a white vapor appeared in the sky, as wide as a piece of cloth and as long as more than ten zhang, with a sound like thunder, moving toward the southwest and then stopping, called the Heavenly Dog. The transmitted text says: if words are not in accordance with reason, there will be calamities of dog demons and demon songs. In that year, people were disturbed, shouting and running about. The Spring Annals says: the Heavenly Dog runs like a dog and produces sound, appearing as a mass of fire; its appearance signifies warfare between the four directions. The Han History says: in the northwest, there was a long object of about three zhang, shaped like fire, called the Heavenly Dog, and its appearance signifies people eating people. The Book of Celestial Officials says: the Heavenly Dog is shaped like a dog. The Mirror Star says: there was a large meteor, producing sound, falling to the ground, appearing as a dog falling down, with firelight illuminating half the sky; the place where it fell was wide at the bottom, about several hundred mu in size, and sharp at the top, appearing yellow, signifying the defeat of armies and the death of generals within a thousand li. The Han History also says: the bright star Zhao Ming fell down and became the Heavenly Dog, signifying the rise of military affairs and rivers of blood, according to the interpretation of Zhao Ming. The Luo Writing says: the appearance of Zhao Ming signifies the rise of a dominant figure. The Yunsou says: the bright star Zhao Ming with apointed rays is its sign. The Yellow River Chart says: the brilliance of the planet Tai Bai (Venus) disperses to become the Heavenly Dog. It also says: if a star appears, red and white in color with light, it is the Heavenly Dog; its lower part is small and without feet, and the country where it falls will replace its ruler. In the thirteenth year of the Zhengguan era of the Tang dynasty, on the third day of the first lunar month at noon, there was a sound like thunder in the southeast, lasting for a long time before stopping. Referring to these signs, it is mostly the Heavenly Dog falling; however, different schools of thought have different accounts, and it is still unclear which one is correct. If we infer according to the trend of chaos and downfall, this is probably the Heavenly Dog.
Wrong arrow. The "Sayuan" says: wrong arrow is produced when the five stars move beyond their normal course and deviate. Wu Xian says: wrong arrow resembles a large meteor, with a dark blue color, moving in a snake-like curve, appearing to have hairy tufts (another account says it looks as if it has eyes), and is several pieces of cloth long, closely attached to the sky. The "Hai Zhong Zhan" says: wrong arrow resembles a meteor, appearing to have hairy tufts and spots, about one piece of cloth long, shining brightly attached to the sky; its appearance foretells great warfare across the land. When it is about to appear, bows and arrows will be used, and the fulfillment period is three years. The "Han Tianwen Zhi" says: the place where the wrong arrow touches is the place that will be attacked and killed by the whole world, a symbol of destruction. It also says: the flow of the wrong arrow is used to attack rebels. It also says that when Xiang Yu rescued Julu, the wrong arrow flowed westward. The divination text says: the place where the wrong arrow touches is the place that will be attacked by the whole world, a symbol of destruction. Among all things, there is nothing more straight than an arrow; now this "arrow" snakes and cannot be straight. An arrow that is curved indicates that the person holding the arrow is not upright, which exactly symbolizes Xiang Yu, who held the power to restore order with an unjust character.
Heavenly Point. Song Jun said: Heavenly Point is a comet that looks like the tip of a spear. The "Hongan Wuxing Zhuan" said: During the time of Emperor Zhao of Han, Heavenly Point appeared in the western Tianshi Enclosure, moved eastward passing through the star "He Gu," and entered the constellation "Ying Shi." The interpretation was that there would be a rebellious minister who would be executed. Later, General Left Officer Shangguang Jie and Prince Liu Dan of Yan conspired against the court and were indeed executed.
Peng Star. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: Peng Star is also called Wang Star. It looks like the light of fire at night. It often appears in numbers of four or five, but sometimes only two or three. Another account says: Peng Star appears in the Southwest, several zhang long, with light on both sides. After appearing, it moves to different positions. The "Han Book Astronomical Records" says: In the third year of Zhongyuan of Emperor Jing of Han, on the sixth month, on the day of Renshen, Peng Star appeared in the Southwest, located south of Fang Su, about two zhang away from Fang Su, with a size like a vessel holding two dou of grain, white in color; on the day of Guihai, it moved to the northeast of Xin Su, about one zhang away; on the day of Jiazi, it was north of Wei Su, about six chi away; on the day of Dingmao, it was north of Ji Su, close to the Milky Way, slightly smaller, and when it was about to disappear, its size was like a peach. On the day of Renshen, it disappeared, lasting for ten days in total. The divination text says: The appearance of Peng Star indicates the presence of a rebellious minister. Between Fang Su and Xin Su is the palace of the Son of Heaven. At that time, Prince Liang Wang wanted to be the successor to the Han throne, sent people to kill the Han official Yuan Wang who dared to give direct advice; the court intended to punish the officials of Liang Kingdom, and the punishment of axes and halberds was about to be used, Liang Wang was afraid, drove his carriage into the pass, and knelt on the axe platform to apologize, and thus escaped disaster.

The term "mengwu" refers to the rising of evil Yin qi that attacks the Yang qi, symbolizing ministers plotting against their sovereign. The Yisi Divination Treatise, Volume Nine
The Great Treatise of the Zhou Changes says: Heaven reveals heavenly phenomena, showing auspicious and ominous signs, and the sage takes it as a model. The Commentary on the Judgment of the Qian hexagram also says: Observing the heavenly phenomena is used to examine the changes of the four seasons; observing human affairs is used to educate the people and establish customs. Therefore, Fuxi drew the Eight Trigrams to determine signs of disorder and order; the Yellow Emperor established star charts, indeed making clear the principles of yin and yang. The great sages used these to connect the ultimate truths of heaven and earth, exhaust the workings of creation, link subtle observations to the subtle pivot, and compare the establishment of laws to the images of the hexagrams. It is because it is subtle that the profound and difficult principles can be sought; it is because it has a pivot that the mysterious and distant matters can be verified. As for looking up to observe heavenly phenomena and looking down to examine geographical features, assisting the state and benefiting the people, observing minute details and investigating subtle matters, preserving oneself and protecting one's life, seeking the roots of fortune and misfortune, and verifying the fixed destiny of success and failure, these have been highly esteemed by the virtuous and wise for a long time. I, Li Chunfeng, without measuring my own inadequacy, studied this path from a young age. Although I have written more than ten works, they often lacked clarity and were too complicated. Therefore, taking advantage of the spare time during my work of gathering firewood, I compiled the writings of various schools, examined and evaluated the doctrines of different schools, combined the teachings of the Yellow Emperor and Wu Xian, widely collected the words of Gan De and Shi Shen, as well as those of San Du, Gui Gu, Wang Ba, and Gao Zong. I extracted the essential points, selected the secret and effective items, classified the auspicious, ominous, victory, and defeat according to categories, and compiled a book. It is merely intended to prevent forgetting, and I added a schematic outline, giving a few examples. Those who love this path and revere the mandate of heaven may occasionally refer to it. If one truly studies it thoroughly, one can achieve certainty without error.
The fifth十三 chapter on the Auspicious Signs of Emperors and Kings
All the aura of the Son of Heaven emits a red color inside and a yellow color outside, facing the four directions properly. The place where this aura appears should have a person who becomes a king. If the Son of Heaven is about to go on a tour to a certain place, that place will also emit this kind of aura in advance, covering several miles in range, and it can be calculated according to the rules. Whether it is auspicious or ominous is determined by the mutual generation and mutual control of the day's stem and branch, and the method of calculating the number of stems and branches is the same. The aura of the Son of Heaven is shaped like a city gate, hidden in the mist, and often carries a chilling killing atmosphere.
The aura of the Son of Heaven takes the form of Huagai, which is the canopy on the imperial carriage, appearing in the mist, sometimes displaying five colors, and often appearing in the morning or evening. The aura of the Son of Heaven also resembles a granary capable of holding a thousand stones, appearing in the mist. Whenever the aura of a ruler manifests, it often occurs on days when the Five Phases are strong or flourishing, and it harmonizes with the current hour and the Day Branch, as explained in detail in the section titled "Brief Examples" of this book. The aura of the Son of Heaven encompasses all five colors, resembling a great mountain guarding a region. The aura of the Son of Heaven also takes the form of a high building, hidden within the mist.
The Luo Writing says: When the Blue Emperor rises, there is a blue cloud supporting the Star of brightness and prestige; when the Red Emperor rises, there is a red cloud supporting the Star of brightness and prestige; when the Yellow Emperor rises, there is a yellow cloud supporting the Star of brightness and prestige; when the White Emperor rises, there is a white cloud supporting the Star of brightness and prestige; when the Black Emperor rises, there is a black cloud supporting the Star of brightness and prestige. It also says: Clouds shaped like a person wearing blue clothes and with hands hanging down appear to the west of the Star of brightness and prestige, which is the aura of the Son of Heaven. If enemy forces have clouds shaped like dragons and horses, colorful and dense, rising directly to the Star of emptiness, these are the auras of emperors and should not be attacked. If such an aura appears over our army, we will surely achieve a great victory in battle.
Fan Zeng said: The clouds above Han Gaozu Liu Bang's head took the forms of dragons and tigers, or showed five colors, which is the aura of a king. He also said: I sent someone to observe the clouds above Pei Gong's head, and they rose straight up to the sky, with mixed colors, sometimes forming human shapes. This is not the aura of a minister. He further said: Clouds shaped like turtles, phoenixes, or tall humans, with five colors and appearing according to the time when a king would rise, are all the auras of a king, mostly rising straight up to the sky.
The fifth十四 chapter on divining the appearance of a general's aura
The aura of a general resembles a dragon. When two armies face each other, if this aura arises from the sky above one side, the general on that side will be brave and sharp like a tiger, surrounded by a fierce atmosphere of battle. When a powerful general is about to take action, this aura will appear beforehand; if there is no action, it indicates the rise of rebellious troops, and whether it is auspicious or ominous is determined by the heavenly stem and earthly branch of that day. The aura of a powerful general resembles the smoke rising from a burning flame. The aura of a powerful general is white, with red clouds surrounding it. The aura of a powerful general resembles bamboo in a mountain forest.
The qi of a fierce general appears purple-black, resembling a gatehouse, or has the upper part black and the lower part red, like a black banner. The qi of a fierce general resembles a drawn crossbow, or like dust rising, with a sharp top and low hanging, and a thick, tall base. When two armies face each other, if the enemy's clouds above appear like round granaries and are pure white, and the sunlight becomes brighter and brighter, this is the qi of a fierce general, and one should not attack.
The clouds above the enemy are yellowish-white and becoming increasingly moist, indicating that the enemy commander has great virtue and prestige, and it is not advisable to attack. If the clouds are bluish-white and high, it suggests the commander is brave and there will be a major battle. If the front is white and the back is blue with high clouds, it indicates the commander is timid but the soldiers are brave. If the front is large and the back is small, it suggests the commander is cowardly and lacks understanding. If the clouds above the enemy turn black with red clouds in front, it indicates the enemy commander is intelligent and strong, and cannot be resisted.
The clouds above the enemy are green and sparse, indicating the enemy commander is timid and weak. If clouds rise above the army and gradually spread like clouds, then take the shape of a mountain, this indicates the commander has deep strategy and cannot be attacked; if such clouds appear above our army, we can achieve a great victory through quick battle. If the clouds above the enemy resemble two snakes entwining and rushing towards people, this signifies the presence of a fierce general, which cannot be resisted; if such clouds appear above our army, we will surely win a great victory in battle. If red clouds rise upward and connect with the sky, this indicates there is a famous general within the army; another interpretation suggests there is a capable and virtuous general.
