Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

On days that belong to the "Broad and Generous" category, if a strong wind blows from the direction of the Son of Heaven and stops at the position of the Three Grand Ministers, it indicates that the Three Grand Ministers will soon enter the court to offer congratulations, and this will happen either on the same day or within nine days. Whenever the days are of "Broad and Generous," "Upright Justice," or "Honest Integrity," if the wind blows from the Chou direction and stops at a certain position, that position signifies where the royal favor is directed, and the official corresponding to that position will be promoted or rewarded. The specific level of the official should be determined according to the seasonal directional chart. If the wind stops at the position of the Three Grand Ministers, then it indicates that the Three Grand Ministers will be honored, and the determination should be made based on the position where the wind stops.

If a strong wind comes from the Chou position, cold and fierce, it indicates that the sovereign will issue severe orders; one simply needs to observe where the wind stops, and the person corresponding to that position will bear the command. If a strong wind breaks trees and comes from the position of the minister, stopping at the sovereign's position, this signifies the minister presenting a memorial to the sovereign. If the wind is gentle and mild, it indicates a congratulatory event. If it is the day of 'Lianzhen', 'Kuanda', and 'Gongzheng', and the day is clear and the weather is warm, with the wind coming from the minister's position and stopping at the sovereign's position, this indicates the minister's loyalty and integrity, and he will certainly receive rewards and commendations.

If the day is a palace day and it is also of the "broad and lenient" type, and the time of wind is added to the palace, it indicates that there is a distinguished guest coming from nearby, within forty li; if the wind blows for half a day and then stops, the guest comes from fifty li away; if the wind blows for a whole day and stops at the king's position, the guest comes from within a hundred li; if the wind blows for two days and stops at the king's position, the guest comes from a thousand li away; if the wind blows for three days and stops at the king's position, it is a messenger sent by the outer court; if the wind blows for four days and stops at the king's position, it is a messenger sent by an outer province; if the wind blows for five days and stops at the king's position, it is a messenger sent by a border general; if the wind blows for seven days and stops at the king's position, it is an envoy coming from forty thousand li away, from the barbarian lands.

If the wind is dark, cold, and fierce, though it may indicate the arrival of a distant messenger, the atmosphere is not harmonious, and the messenger must surely harbor rebellious intentions. When the wind blows, if the day branch falls on巳, 酉, 丑, 戌, or 午, it indicates that loyal ministers will present tribute to the central court. Divination by wind is auspicious if the wind is from a distant place, arrives slowly and steadily, and has a clear, warm, and gentle character; it is ominous if the wind is cold and fierce. If the wind comes from the palace direction and is cold and fierce, it indicates that the sovereign will carry out punishment. If the wind is warm and accompanied by rain, it indicates that the sovereign will bestow a position or reward. Divination regarding important guests applies from the Son of Heaven down to common people, and the method is the same as for divining about subordinate or important guests, but it is differentiated according to the ranks of great states, small states, and families. On the days of the four seasons, if the nayin sound element belongs to the palace tone and the wind comes from the directions of the four seasons, stopping at the sovereign's position or the son's position, it signifies that a guest will visit the master, and the fulfillment will be within one day or nine days. If the nature of the palace tone coincides with that of the wind, it indicates the meeting of sovereign and minister.

Divination on the Outcome of a Siege: Ninth十七th Divination on the Fate of the Enemy

If it is a day of the Horn (Jiao), a strong wind breaks the trees, blowing from the directions of Shen, Zi, Hai, and Mao, with an unusually cold temperature. By noon and midnight, the wind becomes even more fierce, continuing for three to seven days. This indicates that the enemy army will take advantage of this situation to attack the city, and the city will surely fall. The defending army should then retreat outside the city.

Therefore, this situation arises because midnight and noon correspond to the Zi and Wu earthly branches, which are purely宫音 (gong yin). Gong yin belongs to earth. Jue belongs to wood, which can overcome earth. Moreover, it is precisely the time of spring and summer when wood is strong and overcomes earth, so an attack will certainly succeed. On such days, it is favorable for the attacking army to launch an offensive, but unfavorable for the defending army to hold the city. Earth fears wood, and the defending army will certainly weaken and perish. The effect of the nine heavens will be evident soon, within the middle twenty-seven days, or even up to seventy days.

If on the day of the Heavenly Stem 商 (Sang) or 羽 (Yu), a strong wind breaks the trees and blows from the 商 position, it indicates that the enemy army is about to surround the city. If the wind becomes even more fierce at noon and midnight, then the attacking army will not be able to capture the city, and the guest army will surely be defeated. This is because 商 belongs to metal and 羽 belongs to water; metal generates water, and mother and child support each other, thus creating a strong momentum. However, water fears earth, so its power cannot spread. Earth will surely restrain water. At noon and midnight, the city's strength is at its peak, allowing for defense, and the guest army will inevitably collapse.

On the day of "Gongzheng" (Fairness), if the wind comes from the "Gongzheng" direction and stops at the "Kuanda" (Generous) direction, it indicates that the local official will defeat the bandits. On the day of "Yinze" (Secret Malevolence), if the wind's time is added to "Gongzheng," and the wind comes from the "Yinze" direction and stops at the "Jianxie" (Wicked) direction, it signifies that the bandits will win and the officials will suffer defeat.

Divination for thieves on water usually takes the days of Renshen, Renchen, Renzi, and Renxu: if the wind comes from the Zi position and blows continuously for three days or more with dim and unclear sunlight, this indicates a large group of thieves on water will attack the marquises and their states. If the wind is unusually cold, the thieves will arrive at night, and they will not come within seven days, but within twenty-one days at the earliest, and up to thirty-five days at the furthest. The marquises and their states should prepare for defense in advance. If after the wind stops, warm rain falls, the matter will be resolved; if it does not rain, it means the thieves' plan has not been abandoned, and one should set a trap to wait for them.

Whenever there is a day of the heavenly stem Ji (甲), the wind is accompanied by thick, dark fog, blowing in from the Shen and Zi directions at midnight. Although it is supposed to rain, it does not, and the sky remains gloomy with a cold, sudden wind. This indicates a large group of thieves attacking from the water, cutting off the passes and bridges. This will come to pass within five days, or up to fifty days if it is further away. If on days of Renshen, Renzi, Renchen, Renxu, Jiashen, or Dingwei, the wind blows from the Chen, Shen, Zi, or Hai directions, there will be military clashes on the water. This will occur within five days, or up to fifty days if it is further away. If the wind stops and then heavy rain follows, such events will not happen. Additionally, on days of Renshen, Renzi, Renchen, and Renxu, if a cold wind invades the skin and a sad atmosphere lingers for a long time, then when the wind comes during the time of the Five Phases' dominant energy, the thieves will act quickly; but when the wind comes during the time of imprisonment or death in the Five Phases, the thieves will act slowly. As for a great flood about to drown people, it is indicated by continuous strong winds and a gloomy sky for several days, with all ten thousand people feeling sorrowful. This signifies an imminent flood that will drown people.

Ninety-Eighth: Divination for the Death of a Superior and Illness

On the days of Renzi and Renchen, if the wind starts blowing at midnight and stops at midnight, it indicates the queen and the consort of a feudal lord; if the wind starts and stops at noon, it signifies that an incident will involve the sovereign and the queen. (Other situations follow the same pattern.) On the day of Gengzi, which is a yang palace day, if a strong wind breaks trees at noon or midnight, and the wind comes from the Zi position, blowing for five days and stopping at the Chen position, this is called the 'palace' being disturbed. The palace tone stops at Chen, and Chen is the storage of the palace tone, equivalent to a person entering a tomb, indicating the emperor will face mourning, and officials should change into mourning clothes. This should be expected within nine days, or up to ninety days.

On the day of Gengwu, which belongs to the Yin palace, if there is a strong wind in the middle of the day or at midnight that breaks trees, and the wind comes from the Zi position, blows for five days, and stops at the Wu position or the Chen position, this indicates that the queen will suffer a sudden change. If the wind comes from the Zi position, it signifies being executed; if it comes from the Wu position, it signifies being deposed; if it stops at the Chen position, it signifies death by burial. The event will occur within nine days, or up to ninety days. On the day of Gengzi, which belongs to the Yang palace, if there is a strong wind at midnight coming from the Si position or the You position, blowing for five days or more, stopping at the Wu position, and the sky is clear and the wind is mild, this indicates the appointment of a queen, with ministers and feudal lords celebrating greatly, and the emperor experiencing joy. The event will occur within nine days, or up to twenty-seven days.

Whenever an angle day occurs, a strong wind blows from the亥 position, lasts for two days, then stops at the未 position—which is the storage place for wood—this is called entering the storage. It indicates that the governor of a commandery with a rank of two thousand stones will face mourning, and the period is nine days, which is the middle of twenty-seven days. On the Renwu angle day, the wind blows from the未 position and stops at the午 position, lasting three consecutive days, indicating that officials of the imperial court and the governors of the states will face mourning. On the Guichou day, the wind blows from the未 position and stops at the丑 position, lasting one full day before stopping, indicating that county magistrates and county heads will face mourning.

On the day of Si and Hai, if the wind comes from the Hai position and blows for half a day before stopping at the Wei position, it indicates that officials of the deputy level below the chief in various government offices will face mourning events. On the day of Bingxu, if the wind comes from the Wei position and stops at the Xu position, it indicates that officials of the rank of county military commander will face mourning events. Whenever the day is one of the four seasonal days and the Nayin sound element belongs to Jue, if the wind comes from the Wei position and blows continuously for three days until Jiu Tian, the common people will suffer from serious illness. If the wind comes from the Ji position or the Hai position, and the wind is unusually cold, stopping at the Wei position, there will be deaths and mourning, which will occur exactly twenty-seven days later.

On a Jihai day with the Nayin sound element belonging to the Jue tone, if the wind comes from the Jia position or the Hai position and stops there, it indicates that a local official will die away from home. If there are continuous visitors staying at roadside inns, the effect will be seen within three days or up to nine days. Beforehand, there will be messages about their well-being. On a Five Tombs day, if the wind comes from the Five Tombs direction or stops within the Storage area, it signifies death or misfortune. For example, the tomb of the Gong tone is at Chen, so on a Gong day, if the wind comes from Chen and stops there, this is the sign. When the Gong tone is dominant, the effect falls on the local official. The tomb of the Shang tone is at Chou, so on a Shang day, if the wind comes from Chou or Wei or stops at Chou, this is the sign, indicating illness or death. The Jue tone belongs to wood, and the tomb of wood is at Wei, so this sign also indicates illness.

The ruler wishes to help the people afflicted by plague, and the method is as follows: In spring, select a day of Ji (己) belonging to the Horn (角), send the household official on a journey, and before the plague spreads, build an altar to appease and eliminate the plague. Use a white sheep and a large white chicken as sacrifices to purify the evil qi. Then the plague qi in heaven and earth will dissipate, and the people who get sick will not suffer serious harm. In summer, send the legal official instead; in autumn, send the metal official; and in winter, send the water official. In the months of the Earthly Branches Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, send the merit official instead. In this way, the city and town will regain peace. If this is not done, the local area will not be at peace, and the time of effect will be in the month that is opposite to the current month.

Observing the entry of the four barbarians into the Central Kingdom, number ninety-nine.

On the days of Bingchen, Xinwei, Bingxu, and Xinchou, these are days of the four seasons with the Nayin sound element belonging to the palace. The wind comes from the directions of the four seasons, blows down trees, and continues to blow for more than five days until it reaches Jiu Tian. Finally, it stops at the Zi position or the Wu position. This indicates that a ruler from the distant夷狄 will come from ten thousand miles away to present tribute. The effect will be verified within ten days, fifty days in the middle, and up to ninety or one hundred and fifty days for the farthest.

If the days are Renchen, Yiwei, Renxu, or Yichou, these are also days of the four seasons. Wind blows from the directions of Shen, Zi, Hai, and Mao, coming suddenly and fiercely, continuing for three days up to seven days. This indicates a gathering of bandits from outside, uniting with the barbarians, attacking the commanderies and states. They remain hidden during the day and move at night, attacking the central plains. This will come to pass within seventy days. (Another interpretation says within seven or fourteen days.)

On the Renchen day, the夷人 in the east are in charge. Robbers appear on the water. Wind blows from the Chen position and the 「Tanan」 direction, continuing for seven days until above the Jiu Tian, indicating the outbreak of pirates in the eastern sea, expected to occur in fifty days. On the Yiwei day, the夷人 in the south are in charge. If there is a strong wind blowing from the Wei position, continuing for more than seven days, it indicates the rebellion of the southern夷狄; if the wind comes from the Jia or Zi positions, the expected time is seventy days. On the Renxu day, the Qiang Hu夷人 in the west are in charge. Wind blows from the Xu position, at noon the wind is fierce and breaks trees, continuing for more than seven days, indicating a large-scale rebellion of the western夷人, expected to occur in fifty days. On the Yichou day, the夷人 in the north are in charge. On this day, a strong wind breaks trees, blowing from the Zi position, continuing for seven to nine days, indicating a large military attack on the marquises' states in the north, not exceeding seventy days, and up to one hundred forty days.

On days of the four seasons when the nayin sound element belongs to Shang, if a strong wind breaks trees and blows from the directions of the four seasons, this indicates that foreign bandits will gather in groups, attack each other everywhere, and block the passes and bridges, cutting off the roads. This will come true within seventy days. Similarly, on days of the four seasons when the nayin sound element belongs to Shang, and the wind blows from the directions of the four seasons, if the wind arises at the time of Zi or Wu, this signifies that foreign troops will invade the territory, fighting each other. This will come true within forty-five days.

On the days of Geng Chen, Yi Wei, Geng Xu, and Yi Chou, these are days of the four seasons with the Nayin sound element belonging to Shang. The time when the wind arises also belongs to Shang, blowing from the directions of Hai, Mao, Chen, and Xu, stopping at the positions of Si and Wu. If the wind continues for more than five days up to Jiu Tian, it will be fierce and unceasing, indicating that barbarian forces will rise, remaining hidden during the day and moving at night. If the wind stops before five days, changing to blow from the positions of Si and You, then the rebels will definitely retreat and disperse. The effect will be realized within seventy days for the near case, ninety days for the middle case, and one hundred days for the far case.

The divination text explains that when the wind first comes from the four seasonal directions and lasts less than a day, then changes to blow from the four central directions (子, 午, 卯, 酉), and further shifts to the "阴贼" direction, with the weather becoming colder and the sunlight dim, this indicates that the enemy forces are dispersing on their way and will not reach the central plains. If on the days of the four seasons, a sudden storm arises or a fleeting wind blows for only half a day or even a short moment before stopping, this suggests that the nearby border-dwelling Qiang and Hu tribes may cause disturbances, while the actual invading forces are from a thousand miles away.

A small wind indicates a small matter, a large wind indicates a large matter; when the wind covers the nine heavens, the event will occur within ten thousand miles. The range from ten thousand miles, a thousand miles, a hundred miles, ten miles, down to a single family also follows this principle in divination. Someone may ask: If a wind pattern belonging to the夷狄 (barbarian) appears within the Central Plains cities, should we still use the method of divining from ten thousand miles away? The answer is: A wind arising within the city can also indicate matters related to the Qiang, Hu, and Yi (barbarian groups), not necessarily requiring the event to occur ten thousand miles away. Nearby events will manifest among the people of the Central Plains, while distant events will correspond to disturbances among the Qiang and Hu. This is the general principle.

To predict whether the Central Plains will soon send troops to attack the four barbarian tribes, observe the days of the four seasons and the days of the Nayin sound element belonging to the 'Jue' (角) category. The wind arises at midnight, blows strongly enough to break trees, and comes from the direction of the four seasons. It continues to blow for five days and remains in the direction of the four seasons. At this time, it indicates that the Central Plains will attack the four barbarian tribes. This is because the days of the four seasons correspond to the Earthly Branches of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, which belong to the Earth element. Earth fears Wood, and when the 'Jue' day (which belongs to Wood) arrives, Wood will overcome Earth, thus indicating the need for military action against the four barbarian tribes. If the wind stops at the Chen direction, it indicates an attack on the eastern barbarians; if it stops at the Wei direction, it indicates an attack on the southern barbarians; if it stops at the Xu direction, it indicates an attack on the western barbarians; and if it stops at the Chou direction, it indicates an attack on the northern barbarians. The predicted time is ninety days. If rain follows the stopping of the wind, this prediction is invalid.

The outline for divining wind is as follows. The years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei govern passageways, bridges, ferry crossings, roads, and gate keys. These are all related to the outside world. The four seasons belong to the 'outer' category. For minor matters, they should be considered within the nearby gates. This can be used to divinate about the outer city, borders, neighboring states, and foreign tribes. Each case is judged according to the number of days the wind blows to determine the distance. The coldness or warmth of the wind indicates victory or defeat. The slow or rapid arrival of the wind shows whether the enemy advances or halts. (Other situations follow the same pattern.) If a strong wind comes from the directions of the four seasons and stops at the Zi or Wu positions, this indicates that the four directions' forces wish to come forward for peace talks. The exact time is determined by the number of days the wind blows.

Divination on the movements of marquises, dukes, and officials of high rank, including those holding positions equivalent to two thousand stones, is as follows:

諸陽主長吏,諸陰主人間。假令天子、侯王、公卿、二千石、令長、出入郡臣不知,以風知之。假令天子在甲,二千石、使者、令長同占之。

All day branches that are yang in nature oversee matters concerning officials at various levels, while those that are yin in nature oversee matters of the common people. If the emperor, marquises, ministers, governors of commanderies, and county magistrates go out or return to their offices, and the officials in the commandery have no way of knowing, they use the wind to determine it. For example, if the position of the emperor is at Jia, then the governors of commanderies, imperial envoys, and county magistrates also use the same method to determine their positions.

If the Son of Heaven is positioned at Jia, and the wind comes from the Jia position with the hour of onset also at Jia: if the wind stops at Yin, it signifies the Son of Heaven entering the Queen's palace; if it stops at Chou, it signifies the Son of Heaven entering the General's residence; if it stops at Mao, it signifies the Son of Heaven entering the Crown Prince's residence; if it stops at You, it signifies the Son of Heaven receiving common scholars; if it stops at Xu, it signifies the Son of Heaven personally visiting the city; if it stops at the missing position (originally missing in the text), it signifies the Son of Heaven arriving at a commoner's home; if it stops at the positions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei (the four seasonal positions), it signifies the Son of Heaven traveling a thousand li away; if it stops at the positions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You (the four central positions), it signifies the Son of Heaven traveling a hundred li; if it stops at the positions of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai (the four initial positions), it signifies the Son of Heaven traveling only within the city walls.

The heavenly sovereign and the feudal princes use this method for divination. The governors of commanderies, county magistrates, and the rulers of states also employ the same method when determining the auspiciousness of their entries and exits. As for the case where the wind stops at the Jia position, if the wind blows for half a day and then stops, or for a whole day and then stops, or for five days and then stops, these indicate that a minister has something to report. To divinate the appointment of local officials, one takes the courtyard of each official's office as the subject, and determines the auspiciousness based on the direction from which the wind blows.

TheStorage of宫音 and羽音 are both in辰, theStorage of角音 is in未, theStorage of商音 is in丑, and theStorage of徵音 is in戌. When wind blows from the direction of theStorage of the five tones and then stops in theStorage, it indicates death, calamity, danger, and tyranny. The duration of the event is calculated according to the numbers of each tone. If the wind originates from theStorage and starts at the hour ofJiyou, and finally stops at the position of the king and prime minister, then it signifies a reversal from death to survival. Although having entered theStorage, one can still escape punishment, and if it coincides withHeavenly Pardon, one will certainly survive. (Other situations follow the same pattern.)

How do you know that a wind is a sign of a large army advancing first? According to established rules: if the wind is in the Shang tone or the Jue tone, military action begins in the direction the wind comes from; if the wind is in the Gong tone, Yu tone, or Zhi tone, military action begins in the direction the wind goes to. If it is a yang Jue day and the wind is blowing from the Jue position, then this wind is a sign that the general is leading the army to take action. To determine who will win or lose, also follow the rules: whenever the wind arises, if it harmonizes with the Five Phases of the day branch, it is favorable; if it conflicts, it is definitely ominous. Now, on a Jue day, if the wind comes from the Yu position, Jue wood generates Yu water, so the general's army will surely win.

During the Han dynasty, Jing Fang was skilled in using "de" (virtue) for divination, Zhang Heng was skilled in using the Day Branch for divination, Fu氏 was skilled in using "xing" (punishment) for divination, and Yi氏 was skilled in using cold and warmth for divination. Xie Lintai compiled the strengths of these four schools of Fengjiao divination, and they were all very effective. He cut out redundant details and extracted the essential points. Regarding the relationship between punishment and virtue, the king and the minister, the response of calamities and anomalies to auspicious and inauspicious events, there were a total of fifteen points. The wording was cautious and the meaning profound, enabling one to infer distant things from near ones, to examine and observe the actual circumstances of events. The ruler could use it to understand his ministers, and the ministers could use it to understand the ruler.

Its marvelous nature connects with the principles of the sages; orders have not yet been issued, yet responses are felt ten thousand miles away. The intentions of emperors are premonstrated by heaven and earth, the principles of the heavens and earth. This body of knowledge is passed down to future virtuous men, solely to preserve their official positions and achieve good fortune. Below is the Wind Divination Chart. Generally, the methods of wind divination are numerous, some of which are difficult to discern and master, and these are not included here. I have seen that winds coming from the directions of the Eight Trigrams often prove accurate. Now I will list the chart below.

Divination of the Eight Winds to Determine Host and Guest Victory and Defeat

The wind coming from the Qian position is called "Zhe Feng," blowing from the Northwest, indicating the commander will die and the guest army will win. The wind coming from the Kan position is called "Da Gang Feng," blowing from the North, indicating the guest army will win and the main army will lose. The wind coming from the Gen position is called "Xiao Gang Feng," blowing from the Northeast, indicating the guest army will win and the main army will be unfavorable. The wind coming from the Zhen position is called "Gui Feng," blowing from the East, indicating the main army will win and the guest army will be unfavorable.

The wind coming from the Xun direction is called "Small Weak Wind," blowing from the Southeast, indicating the host army will win and the guest army will suffer defeat. The wind coming from the Li direction is called "Great Weak Wind," blowing from the South, indicating the host army will win and the guest army will suffer defeat. The wind coming from the Kun direction is called "Advice Wind," blowing from the Southwest, indicating the host army will win and the guest army will suffer defeat. The wind coming from the Dui direction is called "Impact Wind," blowing from the West, indicating the guest army will win and the host army will suffer defeat.

Divination by Wind for Military Strategy

Whenever an army is about to march, if the wind blows against the army face to face, it is not advisable to proceed. If the wind carries the aura of punishment, it is extremely凶. If the wind blows in the direction the army is moving and encounters an enemy, victory is certain. If sudden winds arise on both sides during the march, it indicates the enemy has hidden troops. If a wind suddenly rises from the northwest and then turns to the southeast, swirling back and forth unpredictably, it signifies the general is greedy and cruel, and the soldiers are discontented. If the wind also carries the aura of month punishment, one must be cautious and avoid battle; if battle is engaged, it will surely result in defeat, which is a凶 omen. If the wind comes from the enemy's direction and coincides with the three punishments, it means the enemy is about to attack. If it coincides with annual punishment or daily punishment, it is凶; if it coincides with monthly punishment, the attack will be delayed somewhat.

Divination by Whirlwind Method

If a whirlwind suddenly rises above the enemy's troops, attack immediately and you will surely win. If the whirlwind blows from the enemy's side into our camp, it indicates the enemy wishes to surrender. If the whirlwind comes with the energy of the Three Punishments, it means the enemy is scheming against us. If the whirlwind suddenly arises and coincides with the Three Punishments, and also carries the energy of the Five Tombs, it signifies the enemy has hidden troops. If the whirlwind keeps rising continuously and immediately meets the enemy upon leaving the camp, it means we will suffer defeat; we should quickly relocate our camp for good fortune.

A whirlwind carrying the qi of a time-related punishment indicates the need for quick battle and decisive action; if it carries the qi of a day-related punishment, the enemy army will be defeated. If the whirlwind rises straight upward into the sky, it is advisable to fight immediately and defeat the enemy, achieving a great victory. If the wind causes the flags to rotate in all directions, east, south, west, and north, it signifies the death of the general and the complete destruction of the army. If the wind rolls the flags around the flagpole and lets them hang straight down without spreading out, and the military drums cannot be sounded, it indicates the general will die in the fields, which is a sign of great defeat.
