Divination by the Day: Fourth Method
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The Sun is set by Heaven to illuminate the lower world and establish principles. The Sun is formed from the essence of the Sun, and in human terms, it is likened to the sovereign. Looking up to it, its light radiates outward, while its dark essence is preserved internally. It gathers its vital energy and spreads its brilliance, maintaining a full and round form, which is precisely the dignity that a ruler should possess. It moves through day and night in a regulated manner, following a fixed path with regularity. In spring it promotes growth, in summer it nurtures, in autumn it gathers in, and in winter it stores away, which is exactly the governance a ruler should enact.
Stars and the moon receive its light, the myriad star mansions proclaim its energy, all living beings rely on its illumination, and plants like hibiscus and sunflowers turn towards it with devotion. This is precisely the virtue that a sovereign should possess. Therefore, the Sun generates morality, nurtures life, grants blessings and benevolence. If a sovereign has flaws, the Sun will reveal his hidden faults to inform the world. As for the numerical measurements of the Sun's circumference and diameter, I have another examination recorded in the "Chronology and Celestial Phenomena Chapter," which is not needed here, so I will not include them.
The Sun moves across the sky, covering one degree in a day and night. When the Sun appears above the earth, it is called day; when it disappears below the earth, it is called night. One day and one night together make up one day. "Day" refers to being full and substantial, meaning it is bright, grand, and full. The radiance of the Sun continues without interruption, and it is impossible to name each part individually, so we use the heavenly stems and earthly branches such as Jiazi and Yichou to distinguish each day.
The Star of brightness and prestige moves across the sky. When it is near the North Pole, days are long and the weather is hot; when it is far from the North Pole, days are short and the weather is cold; when it is exactly in the middle between the North and South Poles, the temperature is moderate and day and night are equal. Therefore, sages created calendars to track the movement of the sun: they arranged the four seasons in order, assigned the Eight Trigrams to directions, used "middle qi" for correction, and used seasonal changes to indicate transitions, thus establishing the twenty-four solar terms.
The beginning of the cycle "Upper Origin" occurred in the year Yisi, on the first day of the eleventh lunar month, which was the Jiazi day of the winter solstice. On that night, the sun and moon moved together like two jade disks joining, and the five stars aligned like a string of pearls, all emerging from the Emptiness mansion in the north. Since that conjunction and winter solstice, up to the present year, TaiTong ZhenGuan third year Jichou, a total of seven thousand nine hundred and twenty-five years have passed, including this year. The sun moves one degree per day, which is the degree defined by the day count of one thousand three hundred and forty. In a year, it moves three hundred and sixty-five degrees and one thousand three hundred and forty degrees, totaling three hundred and twenty-eight degrees, so each year it falls thirteen degrees short of the full circle.
To determine the degree of the Sun at the winter solstice in a given year: first list the number of years accumulated since the beginning of the upper cycle, Yisi, and subtract one to reach the desired year. Multiply this number by 489,428 to get the accumulated daily movement. Subtract this from 4,894,441, the total circumference of the sky, and the remainder is the number of degrees and minutes less than a full circle. Divide this by the degree measure to get the degrees and minutes. Starting from the fourth degree of the mansion of Emptiness, subtract sequentially according to the order of the 28 mansions. When reaching the mansion of Emptiness, subtract 341 degrees and minutes. If the remaining number is less than one mansion, then the degree and minute of the Sun at the winter solstice is determined.
The next solar term's position is calculated by adding fifteen degrees to the winter solstice position, plus two hundred ninety-two parts and five fractions. If the fractions reach six, subtract them and carry one to the parts; if the parts reach one day degree unit, subtract them and carry one degree. If the degrees reach one host, carry over to the next host in sequence. This gives the position of the sun for the next solar term. To find the position for the next day, add one degree, and the carrying over and assignment to the host follows the same method as before.
If one wishes to determine the stem-branch name of the winter solstice on a given year, one should first list the accumulated numbers of the year and the day. Divide the accumulated numbers by the day count method to obtain the "accumulated days." The remainder from the division is the small remainder of the winter solstice. Then subtract the accumulated days from sixty; the remainder is the large remainder of the winter solstice. Starting from Jiazi, count up to the number of the large remainder, which gives the stem-branch of the winter solstice for that year. To determine the name of the next solar term using both the small and large remainders, one should follow the method of calculating the next day's degree. If the total reaches the full count, advance one day. If it reaches sixty, subtract accordingly. The method for determining the stem-branch remains the same as before, resulting in the name of the next solar term. The position of the Star of brightness and prestige cannot be directly observed to determine which constellation and degree it is located in. Therefore, it must be calculated. Once the corresponding division is determined, it can be used to distinguish between calamities and auspicious signs.
In addition, the length of shadows on the days of the twenty-four solar terms, as well as whether the tuning pipes respond to the qi of each term, each have their corresponding verification. Now I list them below, with the shadow lengths of the twenty-four solar terms attached, and the rules for whether the laws and qi correspond or not. Using this method, it is roughly the general principle of observing the sun. The following list of shadow lengths for the twenty-four solar terms takes the names of the corresponding laws from the "Yi Wei"; the numerical values of the shadow lengths at noon are based on Zu Chongzhi's calendar.
On the day of Winter Solstice, the shadow at noon is thirteen feet long, which is the longest of the year; during this phase, the Huangzhong pitch pipe is nine inches long (with a diameter of three inches). On the day of Minor Cold, the shadow is twelve feet four inches and three thirds of an inch. On the day of Major Cold, the shadow is eleven feet two inches; during this phase, the Dalü pitch pipe is eight inches and one hundred and three hundred and forty-three parts of an inch. On the day of Start of Spring, the shadow is nine feet eight inches. On the day of Rain Water, the shadow is eight feet one inch and seven thirds of an inch; during this phase, the TaCu pitch pipe is eight inches long. The phrase "the pitch is in a certain tone" means that during this solar term, the earth's energy corresponds to this particular pitch pipe. At the appointed time, the reed fluff inside the pipe will fly out.
Jingzhe, the shadow at noon was six feet six inches and seven parts. At Chunfen, the shadow was five feet three inches and seven parts. The length of the tuning pipe for the musical note Jiazhong was seven inches and two thousand one hundred eighty-seven parts of a thousand seven hundred and five. At Qingming, the shadow was four feet two inches and five parts. At Guyu, the shadow was three feet two inches and six parts; the length of the tuning pipe for Guaxi was seven inches and nine parts of a inch. The gradual shortening of the shadows shows that the sun is moving north day by day. The way of writing such as "seven inches two thousand one hundred eighty-seven parts of a thousand seven hundred and five" indicates that the whole inch is first mentioned, followed by the fraction, with the denominator before the numerator, meaning seven and two thousand one hundred eighty-seven parts of a thousand seven hundred and five inches.
At the beginning of summer, at noon, the shadow is two feet five inches and three parts of an inch. At the time of Minor Fullness, the shadow is one foot nine inches and nine parts of an inch; the pitch pipe of Zhonglü is six inches plus two thousand nine hundred and sixty-three parts of an inch over twelve thousand nine hundred and four. At the time of Grain in Ear, the shadow is one foot six inches and nine parts of an inch. At the summer solstice, the shadow is one foot five inches, which is the shortest of the year; after this, the shadow begins to grow longer again; the pitch pipe of Ruibin is six inches plus twenty-six parts of an inch over eighty-one. Among the twelve pitch pipes, Huangzhong, Ta cucuo, Guxiashui, Ruibin, Yizhe, and Wuyue are the six yang pitch pipes, while Dalü, Jiazhong, Zhonglü, Linzhong, Nanlü, and Yingzhong are the six yin pitch pipes. The yin and yang are alternately arranged and assigned to the twelve months in order.
On the day of Xiaoshu, the shadow at noon is one foot six inches and nine parts, the same as on Mangzhong. On Dashu, the shadow is one foot nine inches and nine parts. The pitch of Linzhong is six inches in the tuning pipe. On Liqiu, the shadow is three feet five inches and three parts. On Chushu, the shadow is three feet two inches and six parts, the same as on Guyu. The pitch of Yizhe is five inches and four hundred and fifty-one parts of seven hundred and twenty-nine. The Linzhong pipe is six inches, exactly two-thirds of Huangzhong's nine inches. This is precisely the method of "three parts reduction and addition" for generating the pitches: Huangzhong reduces one-third to get Linzhong, Linzhong adds one-third to get DaCu, and so on, generating the twelve pitches in sequence through mutual generation.
White Dew, the shadow at noon is four feet two inches and five parts. On the Autumn Equinox, the shadow is five feet three inches and seven parts, equal to that of the Spring Equinox; the pitch pipe of Nanlü is five inches and one third of an inch. On Cold Dew, the shadow is six feet six inches and seven parts. On Frost Descent, the shadow is eight feet one inch and seven parts; the pitch pipe of Wushu is four inches and six thousand five hundred sixty-three parts of an inch, six thousand five hundred twenty-four parts. The shadow on the Autumn Equinox is equal to that on the Spring Equinox, and the shadow on Cold Dew is equal to that on Start of Thunder, while the shadow on Frost Descent is equal to that on Start of Rain. This shows that the shadows at noon before and after the two equinoxes are symmetrically paired.
On the day of the Beginning of Winter, the shadow at noon is nine feet eight inches long. On the day of Minor Snow, the shadow is eleven feet one foot two inches. The pitch pipe of the Lu (律) corresponds to Zhongzhong (应钟), and the length of the Lu tube is four inches and twenty parts of twenty-seven inches. On the day of Major Snow, the shadow is twelve feet four inches and three parts. Then it goes back to the Winter Solstice, when the shadow is thirteen feet long again. Thus, the length of the shadow goes through this cycle throughout the year.
The method of measuring the length of shadows to determine the seasons: first determine the north-south direction, then erect a vertical gnomon of eight chi in height as the 'gou', and place a horizontal measuring stick of fourteen chi as the 'gu'. According to the length of shadows recorded in the calendar for each solar term, observe the shadow at noon. If it matches the calendar, it is auspicious; if not, it is inauspicious. If the shadow at noon is shorter than the length recorded in the calendar for that year, the Sun is said to be traveling on the 'upper path'; if it matches the recorded length, it is on the 'middle path'; and if it is longer, it is on the 'lower path'. When the Sun travels on the upper path, it indicates a time of peace and stability throughout the world; on the middle path, it signifies a period of prosperity; and on the lower path, it indicates the era of a hegemon ruling.
The method of waiting for the qi: Take twelve bamboo and copper tubes, cutting them to the lengths specified earlier, with an inner diameter of three fen. They are buried in a sealed room, arranged according to the twelve earthly branches in the open ground, with their openings level with the ground. Each tube is filled with the ash made from the inner membrane of reed, covered with a thin layer of gauze. When the qi of a particular law corresponds to a solar term arrives, it will move the ash and cause the gauze to vibrate. A slight movement of the ash indicates harmony; a large movement signifies the ruler is weak and the ministers are strong; complete stillness indicates the ruler is harsh and tyrannical.
Each branch of the musical pipes produces sounds that are either clear or dull. By playing them and listening to the tones, one can discern whether the times are harmonious or not. Therefore, even the Western Rong people understood the use of the musical pipes to judge the situation within the Central States. If there is a sage in the country, then the east wind will harmonize with the pipes.
In addition, the "Mao Shi Xu" says: when sounds are combined to form literary style, it is called "yin." In times of peace or disorder, the tones of music will be sorrowful or joyful. The king and his ministers must deeply observe these changes. The timely and harmonious correspondence between the laws of music and the seasons is the main responsibility of the historians; these matters depend on the movement of the Sun, so they are included here to illustrate the rest. The current historians Fu Renjun and Xue Yi and others altogether neglect the measurement of shadow length and the tuning pipes, and are all idle officials.
Jing Fang said: The sun and moon pass through the Room Mansion and the twenty-eight constellations, each traveling along one of the upper, middle, or lower paths. When the world is at peace, the sun and moon travel along the upper path; when the era is peaceful and prosperous, they travel along the middle path; and when a hegemon rules the world, they travel along the lower path. The sun cannot be viewed directly, but by using the degree of the constellation where the sun is located and the length of the shadow, one can determine the path. A short shadow indicates the upper path. Among the twenty-eight constellations, the one facing a country with virtue will have the sun and moon pass through it with exceptional brightness, bringing good fortune to the sovereign, prosperity, and peace to the people. The sun sometimes appears black, sometimes red, and sometimes yellow. If there are armies abroad, it signifies the defeat of the army; if there are no armies abroad, it signifies the death of a prince or king. If the sovereign does not listen to moral teachings, and ministers disrupt the state affairs and betray the sovereign, the sun will appear red.
Liu Xiang's "Hong Fan Wu Xing Zhuan" says: In the ninth year of Han Chengdi's reign, on the second day of the first lunar month, in the early morning when the sun rose, it appeared red like blood and had no light; until four and five measures of the water clock had passed, it began to emit light repeatedly, casting a reddish-yellow glow on the ground. It returned to normal only after breakfast. At that time, Chengdi lacked virtue, the Zhao sisters in the harem were causing internal chaos, and the Wang clan, the maternal relatives, held power externally, eventually leading to the country's downfall.
If ministers violate the sovereign's laws, the sun will appear red like fire, signifying the country's decline and eventual downfall. Another interpretation says that if ministers violate the sovereign's laws, the sun will appear red like fire, indicating internal disorder in the country. If the sky is overcast, with no light from the sun or moon, the sun cannot be seen during the day and the stars cannot be seen at night, all obscured by clouds without rain, this signifies that the sovereign and ministers each have secret plots. If this occurs during a battle between two armies, it indicates that both sides are secretly scheming against each other.
If it is cloudy during the day but the moon appears at night, it indicates that the ruler is plotting against his ministers. If it is cloudy at night but the sun appears during the day, it indicates that the ministers are plotting against the ruler. If the sun is dim and lacks brightness, it indicates internal disorder among the soldiers. If the sun rises about one pole-high without any light, it indicates there will be three deaths in the month or some calamity. If the sovereign and his prime minister do not follow the four seasons in issuing decrees, and punishments are applied inappropriately, and if ministers conspire secretly, distancing the virtuous and suppressing the capable, then the sun and moon will lose their brightness and show spots. If this continues without change, the country will have poor harvests of the five grains, the six domestic animals will not thrive, the people will act disorderly, and bandits will rise up together.
When the Sun appears but lacks brightness, it indicates the ruler is ill; another interpretation suggests the ruler has wronged his ministers, causing the people to harbor resentment. When the Sun loses its true color, the country it illuminates will not flourish. If daylight is dim and people's shadows do not appear until evening, it signifies harsh punishments from above and urgent pressure from below, making life difficult for the people. This situation will not last more than a year, and a great flood will surely occur, resulting in no harvest from low-lying fields.
The day is dark, with crows gathering and crying, indicating the loss of state authority and ministers seizing control. The sky is clear but the sun does not shine, continuing for three days, which foretells a great mourning and certain national destruction. A shape resembling a crow appears in the sun's center, indicating an unclear ruler and chaotic governance, and the country corresponding to this area will experience mourning and a severe drought. "White Robe Assembly" refers to a gathering for mourning. A three-legged crow appearing outside the sun's disk indicates great calamity for a major country, with people wearing coarse cloth, a somber atmosphere, and continuous wailing cries.
The Star of brightness and prestige is radiant and grand, such that all things cannot directly behold its form. Just as a sovereign possesses dignity, his authority should not be scrutinized or trespassed upon. Now, the Star of brightness and prestige has lost its radiance, and everyone can clearly see its appearance. This is a sign that someone will secretly covet the supreme power, symbolizing the loss of the sovereign's authority. Therefore, it is especially important to cultivate virtue and govern wisely to avert this omen.
In the middle of the sun, if there appears a fiery light, it indicates that the ministers close to the ruler of the country are plotting rebellion; this is caused by the improper order in the heavenly worship, called 'reverse sacrifice'. If there appear black spots or black clouds, or of green, yellow, or red color, sometimes two, sometimes three, it indicates the death of the emperor. According to the "Book of the Middle Reign of Jin", in the third year of Shengping, the tenth month, on the day of Bingwu, a black spot as big as an egg appeared in the middle of the sun, and soon the emperor Xiaozong died. In the fourth year of Tahe, the tenth month, on the day of Yiwei, a black spot as big as a lychee appeared in the middle of the sun; by the eleventh month of the eighth year, the emperor was deposed and became the Marquess of Haixi.
If the "foot" of the Sun appears white, it indicates that the army is defeated, generals are defeated, and the feudal princes retreat. The term "day foot white" refers to the sunlight hanging down and connecting to the ground in a pure white color. If there is a yellow halo above the Sun, it indicates warfare throughout the realm. If the Sun's form diminishes and becomes smaller, it indicates the death of the king corresponding to it. If the Sun splits into two halves in the middle, it indicates the downfall of that country.
The Star of brightness and prestige appearing in the middle of the night indicates turmoil throughout the realm, known as "yin ming," which signifies great warfare and widespread flooding. When the Star of brightness and prestige rises twice and sets twice, it portends the fall of the state, the death of the sovereign, the outbreak of military conflicts, and the subjugation of the ruler by his ministers, leading to the collapse of the world. If the Star of brightness and prestige rises from an inappropriate direction, it foretells the loss of the empire by the Son of Heaven and the failure of governmental orders.
Two suns appearing together indicate that the feudal lords are plotting against the central authority, which is called the omen of destruction: the whole world will be in turmoil, with armies in motion, and the unrighteous party will be destroyed. When two suns shine together, it is called "Yang Ming," indicating the presence of a false ruler and a true ruler opposing each other, with two kings standing side by side in conflict. When many suns appear together, it signifies the fragmentation of the realm, with officials being set up in various places, and laws not being unified; what is meant by "many kings rising" is that there are many who claim the title of Son of Heaven. The "Ji Zhong Shu" says: "Jia resides in the bend of the river, and there is an ominous omen in the heavens."
The saying of ten suns rising together are merely illusions that appear like the sun but are not the real sun. When two armies face each other and several suns appear at the same time, they should be treated as separate entities and camps should be set up to deal with them. The term "solar conflict" refers to the appearance of a three-legged crow within the sun's disk, usually observed between sunrise and breakfast time. Sometimes two suns separate and then come together again, with the bright sun and dark sun clashing, indicating that two countries will attack each other, leading to warfare across the land, and famine will occur within three years. During a solar conflict, sometimes clouds shaped like five-colored ear-like formations appear, arranged in lines and chasing and colliding with each other, which signify the loss of the Son of Heaven's sovereignty and the widespread deployment of troops across the fields.
The Star of brightness and prestige is sick, indicating the ruler is ill, which is shown by the sun appearing red and yellow. The moon being obscured and dying indicates death and mourning, which is shown by the sun appearing red and purple. When two moons appear together, it signifies two rulers standing side by side in the central kingdom. When the sun and moon appear together in the sky, this is called the sign of destruction, indicating warfare across the land and the state nearing its end.
The sun and moon appear together but are only a few inches apart, indicating rebellion by ministers against the sovereign, leading to the death of the king. When the sun, moon, and a large star all appear in the day, this is called "struggle for brightness," indicating that a great state will weaken while a small state will grow stronger, and there will be a newly established prince or king. When the sun, moon, and star all appear together, it signifies that the Son of Heaven cannot control his ministers, and the government's orders will not be carried out, leading to the downfall of a great state.
The Star of brightness and prestige enters the Moon, and within ninety days, there will be a great outbreak of warfare and a change in laws. The price of metal and iron will rise threefold. If it returns to normal within twenty days, the sovereign will fall ill; otherwise, the general will lose his position and later die. When the Star of brightness and prestige appears within the Moon, it indicates the death of the sovereign, which is the situation when the sun is red on the first day of the month. When the Moon and the Sun shine together, but the light at noon is not strong, it indicates that the consort will dominate the court.
Divination by the Atmosphere Around the Sun and Moon, Fifth Section
Li Chunfeng explains: The term "qi" refers to the manifestations of all things in the sky, visible only due to the illumination of the sun and moon. Among all things born of heaven and earth, humans are the most esteemed, thus the qi they respond to is the greatest. Various emotional states such as worry, joy, anger, sincerity, and deceit within the human mind cause qi to manifest accordingly. When illuminated by the sun and moon, these qi take on various forms. Sometimes, this qi arises naturally according to the principles of fate and numbers, and thus it attracts corresponding human affairs, with the relationship between them resembling a cycle.
If the qi of wind and rain appears near the sun or moon, there will be a great wind within three days, and distant rain within seven days. If there is prolonged rain causing disaster, it is merely the sign indicated by the wind and rain itself, without any other corresponding omens. One should wait until within seven days there is no wind or rain, then use these signs to judge whether there will be calamity or auspiciousness.
The first type is called "Guangqi." It is a green and red qi rising above the sun and moon, symbolizing a crowned figure with a sash. It indicates that the Son of Heaven is about to appoint princes, enfeoff his relatives, and grant them land as a barrier. In ancient times, when enfeoffing, they took soil of five colors according to the directions, wrapped it in white reeds, and presented it to the recipient, hence called "granting the soil wrapped in reeds." If the qi appears white, it signifies mourning; if red, it signifies military affairs.
The second type is called 'Dai Qi'. It has a color that is green with a reddish tinge, lying horizontally above the sun and moon, slightly raised in the middle. When this phenomenon appears in the corresponding region, it indicates the granting of more land, promotion of rank, and the support of the people, and is also a sign of heavenly blessings and protection. If the color is black, it signifies illness; if it is green, it indicates many troubles. (Clouds with bright colors and a yellowish sheen are all auspicious signs; the pure red, black, white, and green colors mentioned here are all ominous.) The third type is called 'Er Qi'. It is green with a reddish tinge, small in shape, appearing on both sides of the sun and moon, like the ear ornaments hanging from a crown. If the color is yellow or white, it indicates good news for the empress or female ruler. If the sun has 'Er Qi' in the morning, it signifies the king's appointment and favoring of a person; if this is not appropriate, the female ruler should be cautious. Pure white indicates mourning; mixed with red indicates warfare; mixed with green indicates disease; mixed with black indicates flooding; mixed with yellow indicates joy; other colors follow the same pattern. If 'Er Qi' appears when there are armies in the field, it is a good omen; if it appears when two armies are facing each other, it suggests a desire for reconciliation within the army, and the side closer to the 'Er Qi' will have good fortune. If 'Er Qi' is on the west side of the sun, the western army will win; if it is on the east side, the eastern army will win; the same applies to the north and south. Which side loses can be determined accordingly. If there is no military action and 'Er Qi' appears, it indicates the appointment of a general. If the sun has four 'Er Qi', it signifies the emperor's appointment of a prince or king and the birth of sons and daughters, and this will happen within three years. If the sun has six 'Er Qi', it indicates mourning in the corresponding region. If there is also a red cloud covering the sun, there will be the downfall of a state.
The fourth type is called "Bao Qi" (Embracing Qi). It is a greenish-red color and curved in shape, with the curve opening towards the sun and moon, resembling the arms embracing and supporting. The term "Bao" refers to a sign of approaching and submitting. When Bao Qi appears near the sun or moon, it indicates that vassals from neighboring states will come to submit, and it also signifies the birth of sons and children. It symbolizes loyal ministers assisting the sovereign. The fifth type is called "Bei Qi" (Backward Qi). It is also greenish-red and curved, but when the curve opens outward, it is called "Bei," indicating betrayal, discord, and rebellion. In the region corresponding to this sign, there may be generals who rebel and take control of their cities, and border commanders may have thoughts of leaving. One should be vigilant and prepared. The sixth type is called "Jue Qi" (Ring Qi). It is greenish-red, curved, and faces away from the sun and moon, with a branch extending across the middle, forming the shape of the character "山" (mountain). This signifies a broken jade ring and mutual harm. It indicates discord between sovereign and ministers, and mutual destruction between superiors and subordinates. When two armies face each other, the side near Jue Qi will suffer defeat. If there are armies stationed outside, battle is certain. The seventh type is called "Zhi Qi" (Straight Qi). It is greenish-red, long over a zhang, and stands straight beside the sun or moon, symbolizing self-reliance and independence. In the region corresponding to this sign, someone will declare himself king.
The eighth type is called 「交气」. It appears as a greenish-red color, shaped like two straight lines crossing each other, indicating signs of disorder and rebellion. When there is disorder and rebellion on earth, such a phenomenon appears in the sky. Usually, two days are chosen in the first ten days of the ninth lunar month for observation. If red clouds cross in front of the sun and moon, there will be military conflict beneath that area. The ninth type is called 「提气」. Red clouds surrounding the sun and moon curve towards each other, known as 「四提」. 「提气」 resembles 「珥气」 but with a curved shape. Once it appears, military conflict will arise and the king will die within the same year; the red color indicates loss of territory and the emergence of self-proclaimed kings. Another interpretation says that this phenomenon appears as a triangle shape around the four directions of the sun, which is called 「提」.
The tenth category is called 「缨、纽、承、履」. This category of qi appears in a bluish-red color beneath the Sun. The one with a curved top is called 「缨」, the one with a straight bottom is called 「履」; those that are interwoven and hanging down on both sides beneath the Sun are called 「纽」. All of these belong to auspicious qi, indicating that the ruler will take a concubine. Qi that appears like half a halo, located beneath the Sun, is called 「承」. 「承」 means that ministers serve the sovereign, and the sovereign and ministers connect with each other, resulting in joy. Bluish-red qi that stretches horizontally or vertically above and below the Sun is called 「格」. 「格」 signifies the sign of conflict and struggle. If there is a crown-like qi on the Sun and an ear-like qi beside it, it indicates that the sovereign has private matters, and the matter will occur in the direction where the ear-like qi is located— if the ear-like qi is in the east, the matter will occur in the east, and similarly for other directions. If there is a head-like qi on the Sun and an ear-like qi beside it, it indicates that the Son of Heaven will have joyous events concerning his descendants. Qi that embraces the Sun indicates friendly relations and reconciliation. If there are many embracing qi and ear-like qi around the Sun, the country will be joyful and harmonious. If there is one embracing qi, two back qi, and a ring-shaped qi, this is called 「大疫」; if there are armies outside, there will be rebels. If the Sun has back qi and ring-shaped qi, and four straight qi lines cross through them, it indicates that ministers will commit wicked deeds. If there are芒刺 (spines) on the qi and it is dark inside and red outside, it indicates rebellion; if it is dark outside without spines, it indicates secret plots. If this type of qi appears repeatedly, the country will suffer misfortune. If there is both embracing qi and back qi, it indicates discord between superiors and inferiors. When auspicious embracing qi and inauspicious back qi appear together, the side that is brighter will prevail. If the embracing qi is bright and lasts long, the favorable side will win, and the rest can be inferred similarly. Whenever there is embracing qi, attacking in the direction of the embracing qi during battle will result in victory. If the spines are facing outward, the side within the qi will win; if the spines are facing inward, the side outside the qi will win—these are all methods of divination based on the forms of the qi.
The eleventh type is called "Yun Qi" (Halo). A halo circles the sun or moon completely, forming a closed loop, with a red inner circle and a blue outer circle. This is a sign of military protection. When an enemy is opposing, if a solar halo appears thick, bright, and lasts long, the side with the stronger halo will win. If the halo appears in the east, the eastern side will win; the same applies to other directions. If there is no army outside but this halo appears, it indicates the emperor loses control, and the people are likely to rebel. If both the sun and moon have halos, it means that although they are in the same place, they do not fight, and military affairs will cease. If a solar halo appears on a Gengzi day, it indicates the general will issue an amnesty. If the sun has a blue halo, there will be strong winds within ten days, grain prices will rise sharply, and many people will fall ill, indicating misfortune. If the sun has a black halo, disaster will fall upon the minister in power. If there is no rain or wind within seven days after a solar halo, it indicates a large military movement; at this time, it is not advisable to launch an attack, for if an attack is made, the army will suffer a great defeat. If a solar halo is accompanied by an ear-like cloud, it indicates many disturbances in the palace, with conflicts among the concubines. If there is no rain within seven days, the court should carefully investigate palace affairs. If a solar halo is accompanied by an ear-like cloud, it indicates the appointment of a marquis or king, and also indicates someone plotting against the state; if there are armies outside, the army outside will face regret. If a solar halo is accompanied by two ear-like clouds, one cloud indicates a country will go to war, two clouds indicate two countries will go to war, and the number of countries is determined by the number of clouds. If the sun has a halo with an ear-like cloud, it indicates the nobleman will be dismissed, there will be rebellion within the country, and also indicates the appointment of generals.
The twelfth type is called 「negative qi」.the so-called negative qi refers to a bluish-red cloud-like appearance, shaped like a small half halo, located above the sun. This is called 「negative」. The appearance of negative qi indicates the expansion of territory, which is a favorable omen. If the sun has two layers of halo and four negative qi, it indicates major calamities, resembling signs of internal strife; if it rains within three days, no prediction is made.the so-called 「spear qi」 refers to a bluish-red cloud that extends long and leans diagonally beside the sun, indicating the mutual injury of spears and halberds in battle. If there are both crown qi and head qi above the solar halo, it indicates that the empire will appoint princes and kings; if someone declares himself king, the region corresponding to his territory will certainly expand its borders. If there is head qi above the solar halo, it indicates the occurrence of court audiences, the appointment of feudal lords, and also the issuance of benevolent decrees and policies.
A halo around the sun indicates obedience and submission. If it appears near the sun or moon, it signifies joy for the sovereign, prosperity for descendants, and smooth implementation of government orders. When two armies face each other, the side with the halo will prevail. If the sun is surrounded by both a halo and ear-like formations, it indicates a change in leadership. If the sun has a back-like formation, it suggests military action in the region corresponding to that direction, with the possibility of losing cities and abandoning the court. Rebellion may include both surrender and rebellion from within cities. If the back-like formation is in the east, there will be rebellion in the east; if in the west, rebellion in the west, and so on for other directions. Generally, when two armies face each other, the side with the back-like formation will lose, while the side without it will win—because 'back' signifies rebellion. If the sun has a pearl-like formation, it indicates disobedience, with the same interpretation as the back-like formation: ministers are disloyal, their thoughts are elsewhere, the sovereign and ministers are estranged, the country will face military conflict, or a minister may flee.
When the sun is surrounded by a halo and there is a玦 (jue) aura, the side where the玦 aura appears will suffer defeat when two armies are facing each other. Whether the halo is inside or outside, if there is a玦 aura, the army must engage in battle. When the sun is surrounded by a halo and there are straight (zhi) auras on both sides, it indicates that there will be someone within the country who establishes himself as a king or lord, and he will reward his close ministers with official positions. When two armies are facing each other, the side with the straight aura will win. When the sun is surrounded by a halo and there are four straight auras around it, a major general will certainly flee. When the sun is surrounded by a halo and there is a back (bei) aura, along with embracing (bao), ear (er), and straight auras, and it is pierced by a rainbow, it is advisable to attack in the direction indicated by the rainbow. When a back aura appears in the halo, it indicates that there are armies outside the country that do not engage in battle, and among the generals, there will be traitors. Whether the halo is inside or outside, if the back aura is within the halo, the effect will be internal; if it is outside, the effect will be external.
When two armies face each other, if a halo, ear-like cloud, and ribbon-like cloud appear above the sun's halo, it indicates that the two armies will reconcile. If there are embracing clouds or wearing clouds, it signifies good news. If the sun or moon loses its brightness, showing a green or red halo, and if there are rainbows, back clouds, and ring-like clouds gathering in the degree of the Heart Mansion, this is called "Great Turmoil," indicating that military disasters and funerals will occur together, and a great amnesty should be used to eliminate this calamity. If the sun's halo has an ear-like cloud and clouds pass through the middle of it, it indicates the death of a renowned scholar. If the sun's halo has two ear-like clouds leaning to the right outside, with clouds accumulating both inside and outside the halo, the city will be besieged and the army will have to go out to fight within three days.
When the sun or moon has a halo, if clouds enter the halo from the side within a short time, one should quickly attack in the direction from which the clouds are coming, and can achieve a great victory. If clouds gather inside the solar halo and do not disperse, it indicates that military actions will arise within three days, and the inner city will be surrounded. When there is a solar halo and white clouds appear like a carriage canopy covering the sun, it signifies that the enemy city will surrender and our side will gain territory. If there are two layers of solar halo, it indicates that a virtuous ruler will take the world, and there will be warfare in the corresponding region.
A solar halo appearing green with two layers indicates that relatives of the emperor and royal family will cause turmoil within the court, the monarch will face troubles, and the country will lose territory. A solar halo with three layers indicates that the feudal princes will rebel, the whole country will suffer from warfare, and there will be battles within three years. A solar halo with four layers indicates a sign of destruction: there will be rebellious ministers in the outskirts, the country will fall, and the monarch will die. A solar halo with five layers is called "secret plots," indicating the death of the female ruler, famine in the same year, warfare across the country, and the land being conquered and destroyed. A solar halo with six layers indicates that the state affairs will be disordered, warfare will arise, and there will be national mourning.
A solar halo appearing seven times indicates the decline of the Central Plains and the strength of the Hu and Di tribes, with an urgent messenger arriving. A solar halo appearing eight times indicates disorder among scholars and harm to the emperor. A solar halo appearing nine times indicates the peril and collapse of the world. A solar halo appearing ten times indicates great chaos and peril for the world. All these should be interpreted according to the zodiac sign, star mansion, and corresponding country of the day when the solar halo appears.
A double solar halo with two streams of bright light crossing through it indicates the sovereign will face troubles and there will be great warfare with bloodshed and corpses scattered everywhere. A triple solar halo with two streams of bright light indicates the country will suffer military calamity, losing cities and towns, and ministers will rebel. When two halos cross and connect, it signifies promoting a scholar to the rank of general. If the two halos are of equal thickness, the two opposing forces are evenly matched; the side with thicker halo will win. If the halos are accompanied by bright streams, there will be war across the land. Those already involved in warfare will cease hostilities. The side whose halo does not form a complete circle will be defeated. If the halo appears in the east, the eastern army will win. If two half halos face each other, there will be a great wind destroying the five grains. If the halos cross and span across the bright star, there will be the collapse of armies and the death of generals.
Above the solar halo there are two kinds of qi: one embracing and one opposing. When two armies face each other, the side with the embracing qi will attack the opposing side and win. If the halo qi cannot encircle and leaves a gap in the center, it indicates the defeat of the army. If there is a red qi like a curtain covering the sun, it signifies a great battle. If there are cloud formations resembling a hanging bell beside the sun or moon, and someone appears to be lying beneath the bell, it indicates the death of a general. If there is black qi beside the sun, shaped like a dragon's mouth holding the sun or like a person facing away from the sun, it indicates that a general will rebel.
There are clouds resembling a crouching tiger guarding the Star of brightness and prestige, indicating a general's rebellion. Four rainbows spanning the Star of brightness and prestige signify plots against the state, with particularly severe consequences if the color is bright red. Red clouds shaped like human heads with mirrors hanging are omens of military conflicts and bloodshed. A white rainbow crossing the Star of brightness and prestige, connected to a rainbow, repeatedly piercing the sun's surface, indicates the complete disgrace of the royal family, the emperor launching military campaigns, or the loss of military authority within the court.
A red halo around the sun with an arching rainbow indicates that the general in the direction where the rainbow appears will die. When the sun or moon is just rising, if dark clouds cross across them, one, two, or three in number, there will certainly be heavy rain within three days. If there is a red cloud shaped like a wooden mallet, about seven or eight feet long, colliding into the sun or moon, it indicates that the king of the country corresponding to the star mansion where the sun or moon resides will die. If a human shape appears within the sun or moon, it signifies that a minister will plot against the king, and two kings will fight each other.
