Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

On days of the Palace tone (宫音), if the wind comes from the Palace position (宫位), it indicates the monarch will travel; if the wind comes from the Shang tone position (徵位), it signifies the commencement of construction projects, the appearance of stored treasures, and military affairs. On the day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Zi position or the Wu position, and it comes from the Zi position or the Wu position, it is called "Palace moves Palace" (宫动宫). If the wind comes from the Zi position, it indicates the collapse of mountains and hills, and the monarch's travel, which is called "Special Wind" (专风). If the wind comes from the Wu position, it indicates an earthquake or the earth cracking, or the queen's travel. If the hour also falls on Zi or Wu, it is called "Double Palace" (重宫), indicating the monarch will travel, ministers will be busy, or the queen will go out. On days of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Chou position or the Wei position, or from the Yin position or the Shen position, it is called "Palace moves Shang" (宫动徵), indicating construction projects, the appearance of stored treasures, and military affairs. If the hour also falls on the Shang position, it is called "Double Shang" (重徵), indicating the raising of righteous armies, large-scale construction projects, the state issuing decrees, and imperial edicts being issued, which is called "Righteous Wind" (义风).

On the day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Feather position, there will be continuous heavy rain, indicating that high officials may flee or escape, or alternatively, it may turn into a drought. (The Palace belongs to Earth, and the Feather belongs to Water. When Earth energy is strong, Water energy weakens, and when Water weakens, Fire energy rises, hence it may turn into drought. The Palace symbolizes the sovereign, and the Feather symbolizes the people, hence indicating officials fleeing.) If the hour also falls in the Feather position, it is called "double Feather," indicating continuous heavy rain and overcast weather, which is called "controlling the wind." On the day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Shang position, there will be military movements and foreign troops arriving; if the hour falls in Chen or Xu, it is called "double Shang," indicating military calamity, which is called "protecting the wind."

On the day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Horn position, there will certainly be military conflicts, the king will face danger, guest troops will be injured, and there will be urgent military affairs, or there may be deaths and injuries. If the wind comes from the Horn position, it also indicates a great battle among the border garrisons. (The Palace tone belongs to earth and symbolizes the king; the Horn tone belongs to wood and signifies misfortune, and wood is also associated with crying. When earth moves, it is overcome by wood, and earth cannot withstand wood, so it indicates the king's army suffering damage and great loss.) If the hour falls in the Snake or Pig positions, it is called 'double Horn', indicating the king's decline and great mourning within the palace. On the day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the Heaven position (northwest), it indicates flooding and sudden heavy rain. On the day of the Palace tone, if the hour also falls in the Palace position, and there is a furious wind from the Earth position (northeast), it indicates mountain collapses, the king's journey, and water surging and ground cracking. On the day of the Palace tone, if the hour also falls in the Palace position, and there is a furious wind from the Wind position (southeast), it indicates locusts proliferating and harming the five grains. On the day of the Palace tone, if the hour also falls in the Palace position, and there is a furious wind from the Earth position (southwest), it indicates wild animals causing harm and construction projects involving earth and wood.

On the day of the徵 tone, if the wind comes from the yang palace position, there will be fires, construction projects will start, there will be a great drought, frequent fire incidents, and many fires in palaces and government offices, with frequent disasters; if the wind comes from the yin palace position, the crown prince will be ill. If the time also falls on the徵 position, it is called "double徵," indicating fires and construction projects. On the day of the徵 tone, if the wind comes from the yang徵 position, there will be fires, the king will suffer misfortune and fear, wild animals will cause disasters, and many fires will occur in palaces and government offices. If the wind comes from the yang palace position that is in the "king" or "minister" phase of strength, the country will have a year of joy, but there will still be fires and drought. If the wind comes from the yin徵 position, the king will be anxious, and wild animals will cause great disasters. If the time falls on寅, 申, 丑, or 未, it is called "double徵," indicating that the country's four gates are closed.

On the day of the musical note "Zheng" (徵), if the wind comes from the Yang Yu position, it indicates that there will be affairs among neighboring states, treasures will appear, Yin energy will overpower Yang energy, and there may be thunder and lightning, frost and hail. At this time, the princes and ministers will often lose their historians and advisors. If the wind comes from the Yin Yu position, it indicates that there will be affairs among the four directions and the barbarian tribes, treasures will appear, and there will be frequent thunder and lightning. On the day of the musical note "Zheng", if the wind comes from the Shang position, it indicates there will be urgent military affairs, the king will have people accompanying and protecting him when going out or coming in, and it is necessary to rely on strong military forces for self-defense. Within seven days or seventy days, the border garrisons will have battles. On the day of the musical note "Zheng", if the wind comes from the Yang Jiao position, it indicates that there will be military affairs arising, rapid military movements causing people's anxiety, and there will be mourning in spring. (Since metal can overcome wood, and water is placed on fire, fire is restrained and cannot overcome metal, thus allowing metal energy to gain strength, which is why there will be military action and major disturbances at the borders.)

On days of the羽音 (Feather tone), if the wind comes from the阳宫 (Yang Palace) position, people will gather with their possessions, the sovereign and officials will issue orders, there will be worries about military actions, generals will be appointed, there will be assemblies, construction projects, and severe frost or heavy snow. If the wind comes from the阴宫 (Yin Palace) position, there will be waterworks and construction projects, sudden cold weather that harms all things, and military forces will gather. On days of the羽音, if the wind comes from the阳徵 (Yang徵) position, there will be military actions, the state will issue decrees, there will be worries and troubles, ministers will face urgent difficulties and sorrow, and passageways and bridges will be blocked. On days of the羽音, if the wind comes from the阳羽 (Yang羽) position, rain is expected, people in plain clothes will gather, or there may be a great mourning, and there will be heavy snow, frost, and hail; this should occur at sunrise or sunset, or within five or fifty days, when people in plain clothes will meet. If it is on the day of the five palaces, there will immediately be mourning and cold weather. If the rain comes with the wind from the south, the country will have troubles and many diseases; if the rain comes with the wind from the north, there will be hail and frost, or people will gather by the water or in the water.

On a day of the羽音 (Yu Yin) tone, if the wind comes from the阳商 (Yang Shang) position, it indicates that there are armies engaged in a battle surrounding the city but not fighting, there are troops at the borders, and the passes and bridges are blocked. Although there may be mourning, there will be no military action. (Metal can generate water, and metal and water are a mother-son relationship, which is a harmonious relationship, so it can affect the角 (Jiao) position. The border troops surrounding the city and their defeat is because the羽 (Yu) tone replaces the角 (Jiao) tone to remove calamity, just like a minister replacing the king to attack bandits; since there is movement, it will certainly rain heavily, so they do not fight outside the city.) On a day of the羽音 (Yu Yin) tone, if the wind comes from the阳角 (Yang Jiao) position, it indicates that border troops are surrounding the city, and the city is attacked and breached; (another interpretation: there are troops surrounding the city and the siege continues without resolution.) If the hour falls on巳 (Si) or亥 (Hai), it is called '重角' (Chong Jiao), indicating there may be a siege or a major mourning event.

On a day of the Shang tone, if the wind comes from the Yang Palace position, one should be cautious about the crown prince and beware of grievances, the king may be ill, there may be an epidemic in the army, and there will be urgent military affairs; (the Palace belongs to earth, earth produces metal, at this time it is one metal facing two earths, the mother worries about her son, hence it concerns the crown prince.) If the wind comes from the Yin Palace position, it indicates an urgent military disturbance involving a庶son, and military affairs occur in the north. On a day of the Shang tone, if the wind comes from the Yang Zheng position, it signifies that the capital receives orders, the army is about to move out, the generals are outside, but the army returns without fighting, subordinates are ordered to lead troops; (Zheng governs commands, Shang governs weapons, hence the order to mobilize the army is revoked.) If the hour also falls on the Zheng position, it is called 'repeated Zheng,' indicating a large army is about to move out.

On days of the Shang tone, if the wind blows from the Yang Yu position, it indicates a great famine, national calamity and disorder, along with heavy rain. Military affairs occur in the east. On days of the Shang tone, if the wind blows from the Yang Shang position, there are signs of people in plain clothes gathering, indicating a premonition of the enthronement of a new king; it also indicates heavy rain, blockage of passes and bridges, and generals sending troops to repel foreign enemies. Foreign enemies invade the city, there will be minor emergencies and urgent military movements. The sovereign has worries, the country's four gates are closed, and military affairs occur in the west. If the wind blows from the Yin Shang position, it is a sign of great calamity, high grain prices, and military conflict within the country. If the wind howls for seven or seventy days, an urgent decree is issued, and military affairs greatly increase. (Yu belongs to water, which is generated by metal, so it indicates heavy rain. Two layers of metal qi reversing and transforming into water indicate the sovereign's worry and great military conflict, as well as blockage of the country's passes and bridges.)

On the day of the Shang tone, if the wind comes from the Yang Jiao position, it indicates an urgent order to mobilize troops. If the wind comes from the Yang Gong position, it suggests the king faces troubles, military actions start from the Shen direction, and the country's four gates are closed. If the wind comes from the Yin Jiao position, it indicates a great mourning, many noblemen fall ill, and there will be construction projects involving earth and wood. (Gong symbolizes the king, Jiao signifies death, hence indicating a great mourning.)

On the day of the Jiao tone, if the wind blows from the Yang Yu position, it indicates that officials will collect money from the people, or there will be military mobilization gathering the people, grain prices in the granary will be high, treasures in the treasury will appear, and there will be a locust plague. (Jiao belongs to wood, Yu belongs to fire, and fire governs silk, cloth, and silk products, so this is reflected in officials collecting money from the people.) On the day of the Jiao tone, if the wind blows from the Yang Yu position, there will be earth and wood construction projects, and heavy rain, military activity on the borders, and many officials and scholars will suffer from diseases related to mouth and speech disputes. First, there will be a hot wind, followed by rain.

On the day of the horn tone (Jiao), if the wind blows from the yang Shang position, it indicates sudden military conflicts and worries; if the wind is strong enough to make branches and twigs resonate, the prediction will be fulfilled. On the day of the horn tone, if the wind comes from the yang Jiao position, it signifies military actions at the borders, danger for the ruler, deaths, and the arrival of bandits that cannot be defeated. If the wind comes from the south, it indicates military conflict and news of death from afar, due to the movement from an uncontrollable direction. If the hour also falls on the Jiao position, it is called "double Jiao," indicating distant funerals, border conflicts, bandits emerging everywhere, high grain prices, and hungry people in the fields. (The horn tone is associated with crying because wood is overcome by metal.)

Li Chunfeng's commentary: The various versions of wind divination texts from different schools differ in the number of entries and in their methods of divination. Now I have compiled them all, removing redundancies and eliminating miscellaneous content. Whenever the position of the hour coincides with the direction from which the wind comes, it is called "chong" (repetition). This refers to the sound of the hour matching the direction of the wind, hence called "chong." In my opinion, the cases where the sound of the day coincides with "chong" and those where the wind direction coincides with "chong" should be treated separately. As for the matters governed by yin sound and yang sound, they are also different and must be interpreted separately according to yin and yang.

The fifth tone, Shang, is heard in the Miao area, and the troops rise up from the palace and the residence. This is the seventy-sixth divination.

On days of the Palace tone, if the wind is strong enough to blow branches and leaves, it indicates the ruler will travel. If the wind comes from the 'De' position, it signifies good events in accordance with virtue. (所谓德, refers to the annual virtue, monthly virtue, daily virtue, and hourly virtue, as well as the gentle and clear spring-like energy. Another version states: it refers to the virtues of the year, month, day, and hour in relation to the Five Phases, which is a favorable situation.) If the wind comes from the 'Xing' position, it indicates the occurrence of punishments or legal matters. (所谓刑, refers to the five types of penal positions of the Five Phases in the year, month, day, and hour, as well as the cold, dark, and turbid air.) If the wind suddenly rises within a palace or courtyard, it indicates the commencement of construction projects or the occurrence of disturbances and gatherings of people.

On the day of the徵 tone, if the wind is strong enough to make the branches of trees resonate, and if the origin and the end of the wind both fall within the徵 position, or if the wind suddenly arises in a palace or courtyard, it indicates a fire incident or troubles from verbal disputes. If the wind comes from the徵 position, the hour also falls in the徵 position, and the wind finally stops in the徵 position, then it foretells a fire in a palace or government building.

On days of the feather tone, if the wind is strong enough to make the branches of trees resonate, or if a sudden gust blows through palaces and courtyards, it indicates the gathering of people and the accumulation of wealth, with valuable items entering or leaving. It also signifies changes in water-related matters and events involving boats crossing water.

On days of the 商 (Harmonic) tone, if the wind is strong enough to make the branches of trees shake, or if a sudden gust blows through the palace or courtyard, or if the hour falls on the 商 position and the wind comes from or goes to the 商 position, it indicates that there will be people within the courtyard who will harm each other, disputes, and injuries from weapons. If the energy of the day branch is stronger than the energy of the hour, it suggests that outsiders will come to harm the owner.

On days of the musical note "Jiao," if the wind is strong enough to make the branches of trees resonate, or if a sudden gust of wind arises in the palace or courtyard, it indicates illness. If the hour falls in the "Jiao" position, and the direction from which the wind comes and goes is also in the "Jiao" position, then it should be interpreted according to the method for external funerals. The time of occurrence is within nine days, possibly extending to ninety days. If the hour is in the "Wang" (sovereign) or "Xiang" (minister) strong phase, the effect will be on the ruler. If it is in the "Xiang" phase, it will affect the minister's wife or concubine. If it is in the "Si" (death), "Qiu" (captivity), or "Xiu" (rest) weak phases, it will affect a lowly person.

On days of the Jue tone, if the hour falls on Shen or Zi, or if the wind blows from or towards the Jue position, it indicates that people within the house will harm each other. If the day branch's energy is stronger than the hour's, it indicates that outsiders will harm the owner. Determine the direction of the person affected by observing where the wind originates and where it stops. If the Jue tone is mixed with Yu tone, it indicates drowning; if mixed with Zheng tone, it indicates burning to death; if mixed with Shang tone, it indicates death by weapon; if mixed with Gong tone, it indicates death from illness or imprisonment.

Method of Calculating the Heavenly Stems of Years, Months, Days, and Hours, Their Virtues, Crimes, and Harmful Influences, Section Seventy-Seven

The method of determining the virtue of the heavenly stems for years, days, months, and hours: Jia's virtue is in Jia itself, Yi's virtue is in Geng, Bing's virtue is in Bing itself, Ding's virtue is in Ren, Wu's virtue is in Wu itself, Ji's virtue is in Jia, Geng's virtue is in Geng itself, Xin's virtue is in Bing, Ren's virtue is in Ren itself, and Gui's virtue is in Wu. For example, if the heavenly stem of the year is Jia, then the year's virtue is in Jia; if the heavenly stem of the year is Yi, then the year's virtue is in Geng. (The rest of the stems follow the same pattern.)

The method of determining the virtue of the earthly branches for years, months, days, and hours: if the year, month, day, or hour is the branch of Zi, its virtue is in Si; if it is Chou, its virtue is in Wu. (This means starting from the original branch and counting forward five positions in the sequence. The same method applies to the other branches.)

The method of determining the Star of Virtue and Charity for the month: if the month's branch belongs to the Triple Harmony of fire (寅, 午, 戌), the Star of Virtue and Charity is 丙; if it belongs to the Triple Harmony of wood (亥, 卯, 未), the Star of Virtue and Charity is 甲; if it belongs to the Triple Harmony of water (申, 子, 辰), the Star of Virtue and Charity is 壬; if it belongs to the Triple Harmony of metal (巳, 酉, 丑), the Star of Virtue and Charity is 庚.

The method of determining the annual killer (sui sha): if the sovereign year (tai sui) is in寅, 午, or 戌, the annual killer is in 丑; if it is in 巳, 酉, or 丑, the annual killer is in 辰; if it is in 申, 子, or 辰, the annual killer is in 未; if it is in 亥, 卯, or 未, the annual killer is in 戌. There is also the "metal god killer" (jin shen sha): in the first months (zhong yue, 正月, 四月, 七月, 十月), the killer is in 酉; in the middle months (zhong yue, 二月, 五月, 八月, 十一月), the killer is in 巳; in the last months (si yue, 三月, 六月, 九月, 十二月), the killer is in 丑.

The method of determining the positions of mutual刑 (mutual punishment) for years, months, days, and hours: if the year, month, day, or hour is 子, the position of刑 is 卯, where 卯 is the「刑下」(lower position of刑) and 子 is the「刑上」(upper position of刑); if it is 丑, the position of刑 is 戌, where 戌 is the「刑下」and 未 is the「刑上」; if it is 寅, the position of刑 is 巳, where 巳 is the「刑下」and 申 is the「刑上」; if it is 卯, the position of刑 is 子, where 子 is the「刑下」and 卯 is the「刑上」; if it is 巳, the position of刑 is 申, where 申 is the「刑下」and 寅 is the「刑上」; if it is 未, the position of刑 is 丑, where 丑 is the「刑下」and 戌 is the「刑上」; if it is 申, the position of刑 is 寅, where 寅 is the「刑下」and 巳 is the「刑上」; if it is 戌, the position of刑 is 未, where 未 is the「刑下」and 丑 is the「刑上」. When predicting wind direction, first use this table to determine the「刑上」and「刑下」positions, then check from which position the wind is coming.

Li Chunfeng remarked: Wind coming from the position of "刑下" brings relatively minor calamities; wind coming from the position of "刑上" brings severe misfortunes. There is a saying that the three punishments refer to punishments of the year, month, day, and hour. However, when counted this way, there are actually four punishments: year punishment, month punishment, day punishment, and hour punishment. The three punishments I, Li Chunfeng, refer to are "刑上," "刑下," and "自刑." Among the four punishments, these three are included. The four punishments are used to distinguish the rank of the objects affected, while the three punishments are used to differentiate the depth of the calamities.

The method to distinguish between gentle winds and destructive winds: when destructive winds come, they are mostly accompanied by evil qi, cold and severe, with the sky pale and turbid, dust swirling heavily. As for auspicious winds, they carry virtue, and the sun shines clearly and brightly, the weather is mild, the wind is light and soft, the branches it moves are not far from the ground, do not raise dust, and pass gently. Now, all the divination texts mention terms like "cold and turbid white" and so on. Now we simplify them into general categories: whatever is called "cold and turbid white" is called "destructive qi"; whatever is called "clear and mild" is called "gentle qi"; (whatever is thus clear and bright is called "clear and gentle.") Whatever is called "great wind with cold and darkness," "dim and dark sunlight," or "heavy mist covering" is called "dim qi."

On the Seventh十八th Method of the Six Emotions

The so-called "six emotions" refer to the six kinds of human dispositions: like, dislike, joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness. In terms of the nature of the Five Phases: water is intelligent and cautious, wood is calm and benevolent, fire is impetuous and prone to chaos, earth is solid and powerful, and metal is strong and values righteousness.

The first is called 「Tān láng」, which is paired with the branches Shen, Zi, and Chen. These are the sources of water, and its nature is to erode and spread out, being greedy and quarrelsome. When water moves, it overflows downward, continuously flowing toward the Zhen direction day and night. Therefore, Shen and Zi branches are associated with Tān láng, while Chen and Wei branches are associated with奸邪. Water is characterized by wisdom, so it can flow downward and reach the Wei direction. In winter, when things are closed and stored, there is a tendency to accumulate greedily without satisfaction, which is why it is called 「Tān láng」.

The second type is called "Yin Zei," which is associated with the three branches Hai, Mao, and Wei, all belonging to the category of wood. Its nature is twisted and not straight, its disposition is perverse and concealed, dark and obstructive, and it is skilled at hiding. Wood is born from water, yet it consumes the water that nourishes it, so when it conflicts with Hai, it becomes Yin Zei, and when it conflicts with Wei, it becomes cunning and deceitful. Wood grows from water, and after its leaves fall, it returns to its root, which is at Hai. Since Hai governs thieves, it is responsible for Yin Zei matters. Wood sprouts in spring and grows secretly, hence it is called "Yin Zei."

The third one is called 「Lianzhen」, which is associated with the branches Yin, Wu, and Xu, representing the direction of fire. Its nature is sincere and upright, its disposition hot and vigorous. Its brilliance rises upward, while its turbid and stagnant aspects descend downward. It upholds propriety to complete itself, does not accept filth and evil, and is similar to the 「Li」 trigram. Its way corresponds to the image of 「Chongming」, which means repeated brightness. Therefore, the branches Yin and Wu are associated with Lianzhen, while Xu is associated with uprightness. Fire thrives in summer, hence it is considered correct. Although its fiery power is strong, it can restrain itself, and its energy does not overflow to other directions, hence it is called 「uprightness」.

The fourth type is called "Broad and Generous," which is associated with the branches Si, You, and Chou, representing the direction of metal. Its nature is decisive and upright, with a broad and magnanimous disposition, similar to the Qian hexagram's strength and vigor, and corresponding to the Dui hexagram, symbolizing giving to others. Therefore, the branches Si and You are associated with Broad and Generous, while Chou and Xu are associated with Justice. Metal is strong and acts with righteousness and straightness, ultimately returning to its original position. Autumn is the season of harvest, so it is called "Broad"; it follows the heavens in covering all things, hence it is called "Generous."

The fifth type is called "Jianxie" (Deceit), governed by the branches Chen and Wei. Chen is the final stage of water, and Wei is the end of wood; water represents wisdom, and when wisdom reaches its limit, it gives rise to cunning and deceit. Wood growing sideways becomes crooked, hence Chen and Wei are in charge of Jianxie. The sixth type is called "Gongzheng" (Impartiality), governed by the branches Chou and Xu. Chou belongs to metal, which is strong and capable of fairness; Xu belongs to fire, which is bright and able to maintain correctness, so Chou and Xu are in charge of Gongzheng.

Shen and Zi indicate 'Tan Lang', which governs deception, broken trust, loss of property, and encountering thieves, as well as matters involving someone carrying out attacks, seizures, and plunder. (Jing Fang says: This indicates demanding property from others and forcefully seizing it.) Si, You, and Chou indicate 'Kuan Da', which governs blessings, rewards, and gatherings of wine and food for feasting, and should be associated with noblemen and virtuous persons. (Jing Fang says: This indicates feasting and celebration with wine and food.)

The branches Hai, Mao, and Wei indicate "Yin Zhe," which governs matters of combat and injury, plots of rebellion and disorder. (Jing Fang said: This indicates robbery, violence, and forced seizure.) The branches Yin and Wu indicate "Lian Zhen," which governs the etiquette of host and guest, marriage and state ceremonies, and should be found in honest and trustworthy, humble and cautious people. (Jing Fang said: This indicates the arrival of a superior guest and promotion in official rank.)

Chou and Xu govern 'justice', overseeing matters of revenge and retribution, as well as warfare. (Jing Fang said: They govern the formation of enmity and disputes, and direct open argumentation.) Chen and Wei govern 'deceit', overseeing matters of deception and disrespect towards others. (Jing Fang said: They govern licentiousness, illness, and fraud.)

The Heavenly Stems are paired with five types of relationships: The first is "original relationship" (governed by Jia and Yi). The second is "harmonious relationship" (governed by Bing and Ding). The third is "punishment relationship" (governed by Wu and Ji). The fourth is "clash relationship" (governed by Geng and Xin). The fifth is "hook relationship" (governed by Ren and Gui).
