Divination for solar eclipse, sixth section.
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The Sun moves along a fixed path. The phenomenon known as "solar eclipse" occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, blocking the Sun's light. This is a symbolic representation of a minister obstructing the sovereign. The Sun moves slowly, advancing one degree per day and about twenty-nine degrees in a month. The Moon, however, moves much faster, completing a full orbit around the Earth in about twenty-seven and a half days, and catches up to the Sun after about twenty-nine days. When the Moon catches up to the Sun, they are aligned along the same path, with the Moon positioned between the Sun and the Earth, thus causing an eclipse. This is analogous to a minister traveling alongside the sovereign and forcing the sovereign into a position where the minister's influence obscures the sovereign's radiance. A solar eclipse also symbolizes a minister concealing the sovereign's authority, so the sovereign should be cautious and vigilant against powerful ministers and relatives who hold authority close to the court.
Solar eclipses occur according to fixed measurements, yet calamities are manifested upon the sovereign and ministers. Some doubt this, arguing that the eclipses of sun and moon can be calculated and predicted in advance, before the new moon. The extent of the eclipse, the time it occurs, and the timing of its onset all match perfectly, like a contract. How can this be considered a sign of heaven's punishment? In fact, when the moon wanes in the sky, the fish brain diminishes in the water. Does the moon destroy itself to cause calamity for clams and oysters? It is merely the natural interaction of yin and yang, happening naturally. When the east wind blows, wine overflows from the jar. The east wind does not blow specifically to cause the wine to overflow; it is only when the wind approaches that the wine naturally overflows. Is this not an example of mutualsympathetic response? If this is considered accidental, then oil and water, like wine, are all liquids. When the east wind blows, oil and water do not overflow, but wine does. This is similar to when natural disasters occur: a virtuous sovereign cultivates virtue and thus avoids calamity, while a tyrannical ruler imposes harsh rule and thus incurs disaster. Is this not exactly the same principle? Using a yang sui to obtain fire from the sun and a fang zhu to obtain water from the moon are both based on the principle ofsympathetic response between things. Yang sui and fang zhu are both types of copper蛤-like objects. If a common mirror is used to obtain fire or water but fails, it is because there is no correspondingsympathetic response, so it cannot be used for divination.
Disasters begin in places of confusion; when there is no obvious celestial anomaly, but an eclipse occurs on a non-new moon day, it is called "thin eating." All instances of thin eating indicate that the ruler's punishment is unjust, and wicked ministers gradually rise up in rebellion. The northern yin energy becomes strong and approaches, obscuring the sunlight. When yin energy is strong and invades yang energy, it signifies that ministers oppress the ruler. The ruler of the region corresponding to this phenomenon will face danger, and this will come to pass within three years. In a country without virtue, when the sun and moon pass through its region, an eclipse will occur. Where military conflict attacks, the country will suffer defeat and destruction, and there will certainly be calamity. Pei Zi said: The sun symbolizes the ruler, and the moon symbolizes the ministers. In a year, the sun and moon meet twelve times, which symbolizes the meeting of the ruler and ministers. When the ruler has lost virtue, the ministers seize power, hence there is an eclipse as a calamity. Therefore, when an eclipse occurs, drums should be beaten, offerings of jade and silk presented, and the senior ministers questioned, using these rituals to restrain the ministers' power.
From this one can discern whether the sovereign and ministers are loyal and upright. In times of universal peace, the sun and moon may meet but will not result in an eclipse; once an eclipse occurs, there will be ominous events. This is a presage of ministers indulging in power, usurping the throne, rebellion, and calamities such as war, floods, droughts, and famine. The sun is the precious essence of yang energy, the treasure of the radiant and luminous spirit. Its energy spreads benevolence and nurtures all things. This nurturing function on earth is called "de" (virtue), which refers to acts of nurturing. When virtue is harmed, vitality is lost, hence an eclipse occurs, inevitably accompanied by the downfall of a nation and the death of the sovereign. When an eclipse happens, a nation lacking virtue will perish. When an eclipse occurs, the sovereign should cultivate virtue, and the most important aspect of cultivating virtue is self-reproach. Therefore, the great Yu and the sage King Tang both blamed themselves, and their flourishing became especially swift.
When the sunlight is obscured and the sun appears pale and yellow, there will be mourning within three years in the country corresponding to the eclipse. Another interpretation says that if an eclipse occurs as the sun is just rising, it is called "wu ming" (no brightness), and the states of Qi and Yue will suffer military calamities and lose territory. Whenever there is a solar eclipse, there will be military conflict and mourning. Whether there is loss of territory or even the fall of a state depends on the time of day the eclipse occurs, the star mansion it corresponds to, and the day's stem-branch. If the eclipse occurs after midday, it indicates military conflict, but the conflict will cease. If the eclipse begins at the upper part of the sun, it signifies the ruler losing virtue and the country's downfall. If it begins at the side, it indicates internal strife and a great rise in military conflict, leading to the enthronement of another king. If it begins at the lower part of the sun, it indicates a female ruler being unrestrained and indulgent, with ministers mobilizing troops in violation of military discipline, which will be manifested in the general.
When the sun is partially obscured but not more than half, it indicates the death of princes and high officials, loss of territory, and mutual expulsions. When the sun is half obscured, it signifies a great mourning and the danger of a country's downfall. When the sun is more than half obscured, the calamity is severe and will affect the ruler of the entire realm. If the sun is completely covered, it indicates the loss of the realm, the loss of power, and the assassination of the sovereign by his ministers or the son by his father, which will come to pass within three years. When the sun is eclipsed and stars appear in the sky, it indicates the assassination of the sovereign by his ministers and the fragmentation of the realm. When the sun is eclipsed and there is a halo around it, along with bright clouds moving to cover the sun, it indicates great chaos throughout the realm, the outbreak of large-scale military conflicts, the assassination of the sovereign by his ministers, and the loss of the sovereign's position. A solar eclipse represents the invasion of yin by yang, indicating danger to the sovereign's position, the unrest of armies, and at this time, it is advisable to widely bestow favors to support yang and restrain yin.
When an eclipse occurs and there are clouds resembling white rabbits or white deer surrounding it, it indicates that the people will rebel and ministers will defy the sovereign. This omen will manifest within the same year. If during an eclipse, clouds, strong winds, darkened skies, or halos and comets appear, forming the shape of a flock of flying birds surrounding the sun, this is called "Tian Ji" (Heavenly Rooster). It signifies that the concubines will plot to replace the ruler and seize power, constantly observing the political situation to achieve their ambitions. If during an eclipse, strong winds blow, the ground produces sounds, and clouds rise from all directions, it indicates that the prime minister is seizing power and plotting rebellion. If there is a severe earthquake, darkened skies, and cold weather followed by an eclipse, it signifies that the regional governors will act independently, committing unjust and rebellious acts.
When the sun is eclipsed and the weather is unusually cold, especially at dawn, it indicates great famine in the Central Plains, the rise of bandits, disturbances by barbarian tribes, and rebellion among the feudal lords. If during a solar eclipse a star falls but then rises again, it signifies that the ruler will be killed, and the people's resources will be completely exhausted. This is a fulfillment of heavy and frequent taxation. When both the sun and moon are eclipsed at the same time, it foretells the downfall of the state. The sun symbolizes the sovereign, so if the ruler does not practice virtue, the sun will undergo abnormal changes.
The sun's light is obscured and its brilliance is lost. If the sun is eclipsed in spring, it is a great calamity, indicating a major loss and the death of the female ruler. If the sun is eclipsed in summer, it signifies the death of the feudal lords. If the sun is eclipsed in autumn, it indicates warfare and the death of the ruler's side. If the sun is eclipsed in winter, it signifies mourning and the prevalence of disease and plague. If an eclipse occurs during the four seasons on a day when the Five Phases are in the "king" position, the ruler will die. If it occurs on a day when the Five Phases are in the "minister" position, the prime minister will die. If it occurs on a day when the Five Phases are in the "captivity" or "death" position, a minister will kill the ruler. If it occurs on a day when the Five Phases are in the "rest" or "abandonment" position, there will be an outbreak of disease and plague.
When the Sun is eclipsed in the first lunar month, it indicates that the common people will suffer from many diseases; in the second month, there will be frequent funerals; in the third month, there will be great floods; in the fourth and fifth months, there will be severe droughts and widespread famine; in the sixth month, there will be the death of livestock; in the seventh month, the harvest will be poor, and the state of Qin will suffer; in the eighth month, military conflicts will arise; in the ninth month, the price of silk and textiles will rise; in the tenth month, the price of livestock will increase; in the eleventh and twelfth months, grain prices will soar, and cattle in the state of Yan will die. As for how to interpret the eclipse on the day of a particular day branch such as Jia or Yi, it should be determined according to the rules outlined in the chapter "Lü Li" of this book.
According to the divination based on the position of the eclipse: if the Sun is eclipsed in the Horn mansion, it indicates that generals and officials will be sent to till the fields, and the minister in charge of agriculture will have worries; the capital's four gates will be closed, and the country will suffer misfortune. (If the Moon is eclipsed in the Horn mansion, the interpretation is the same.) If the Sun is eclipsed in the Neck mansion, it indicates that court officials have intentions of rebellion. If the Sun is eclipsed in the Root mansion, it indicates that the emperor will fall ill and die, ministers and chancellors will slander and flatter, the sovereign will wrongly execute the innocent, and the queen consort will suffer misfortune. If the Sun is eclipsed in the Room mansion, it indicates that the king will be anxious about illness, the country will be in chaos, and also that ministers will seize power. (If the Moon is eclipsed in the Room mansion, the interpretation is the same.) If the Sun is eclipsed in the Heart mansion, it indicates that the sovereign and ministers will not trust each other, orders and decrees will lose their proper standards and regulations, and the measures of law and justice will become disorderly and inappropriate.
The Star of brightness and prestige in the Tail mansion causing an eclipse indicates an outbreak of plague and minor calamities within the palace. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Winnowing Basket mansion causing an eclipse indicates strong winds and sandstorms, which may overturn roofs and break trees; precautions should be taken for all movements and activities. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Dipper mansion causing an eclipse indicates anxiety among officials and a famine in the country with military conflicts arising. (If the moon is eclipsed in the Dipper mansion, the interpretation is the same.) The Star of brightness and prestige in the Ox mansion causing an eclipse indicates rebellion within the country and military conflicts, and precautions should be taken regarding faults caused by the queen and concubines in their worship and prayers. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Girl mansion causing an eclipse indicates precautions should be taken regarding the activities of shamans and the queen and concubines in their worship and prayers. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Emptiness mansion causing an eclipse indicates the country may suffer from collapse and destruction, and the whole world will change its clothing colors. (If the moon is eclipsed in the Emptiness mansion, the interpretation is the same.) The Star of brightness and prestige in the Rooftop mansion causing an eclipse indicates a great mourning, and both the sovereign and ministers will change their mourning clothes. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Encampment mansion causing an eclipse indicates the sovereign has no restrictions on entering and exiting, indulges in women, and the maternal relatives dominate the court. The Star of brightness and prestige in the Wall mansion causing an eclipse indicates the loss of yang energy, the decline of yin energy, and many violations of human relationships in the realm of men and women. The sovereign fails in filial piety, bows down to follow teachers and friends, the classics and regulations are neglected, moral education is damaged, and the schools and rituals are abandoned.
The Star of brightness and prestige is eclipsed in the Legs mansion, indicating misfortune in the state of Lu, with the country in disorder and instability. One should be cautious about the ruler himself and matters concerning the borders, stables, and granaries. When the Star of brightness and prestige is eclipsed in the Bond mansion, one should be on guard against officials who hoard wealth. When it is eclipsed in the Stomach mansion, there will be worries about the shortage of grain in the state responsible for transporting grain. When it is eclipsed in the Hairy Head mansion, ministers will face difficulties and imprisonment, and the king will fall ill. One should be cautious about officials in charge of criminal justice who may offend the sovereign or wrongly accuse the emperor. When the Star of brightness and prestige is eclipsed in the Net mansion, there will be the defeat of a general on the border, and the sovereign will be blamed for hunting and leisure activities. When it is eclipsed in the Three Stars mansion, one should be cautious about the generals.

The Sun's eclipse in the Well mansion indicates that the state of Qin will not submit, and the plans made will not succeed, there will be a great drought and people will flee. The Sun's eclipse in the Ghost mansion indicates that the ruler of the country will be restless. The Sun's eclipse in the Willow mansion indicates that officials responsible for food, gates, bridges, and roads will have worries. The Sun's eclipse in the Star mansion indicates that officials in charge of bridges and gates will be concerned about being demoted. The Sun's eclipse in the Extended Net mansion indicates that officials managing mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes will have worries. The Sun's eclipse in the Wings mansion indicates that the king will dismiss the Minister of Rites and replace him with a judicial official; if the king issues benevolent decrees and commands, the solar eclipse will not cause disaster. There will be drought this year, and it also indicates that the king has neglected worship and has not personally attended the ancestral temple, so the officials in charge of chariots should be cautious. The Sun's eclipse in the Chariot mansion indicates the death of a high minister and the queen's unrest. (If the Moon is eclipsed in the Chariot mansion, the interpretation is the same.)
Whenever an eclipse occurs, all officials wear red headscarves to assist the yang energy. The Son of Heaven wears plain garments, avoids the main hall, and the palace is strictly guarded. The Grand Astrologers wait on the spirit platform to observe the sun. If any change is observed on the sun's surface, they immediately beat the drum. Upon hearing the drum, attendants wear red headscarves and carry swords to assist the yang energy. This is the ritual in accordance with celestial phenomena.

The moon is the essence of the Taiyin, formed by the accumulation of yin energy, its body containing shadow substance, which receives the light from the Sun to illuminate the night and assist in the cultivation of yin energy. When paired with the Sun, it symbolizes the female ruler; when compared to virtue, it carries the meaning of punishment. When placed in the court's order, it corresponds to the rank of ministers and great officials. Therefore, when the moon is near the Sun, its brightness diminishes, like a minister approaching the sovereign and thus becoming humble and submissive; when it is far from the Sun, its brightness is full, because it follows the Dao and laws, receiving the sovereign's honor and thus its position is expanded. When it is exactly aligned with the Sun, it becomes eclipsed, like a minister overstepping the sovereign's path, leading to calamity and destruction. When fullness reaches its peak, it inevitably wanes, showing that fullness cannot last. The character 'moon' means 'deficiency,' so yin energy, ministerial conduct, and marital conduct should not be allowed to reach fullness; by nature, they should always remain deficient. Its movement is swift, corresponding to the way ministers rush to attend to duties. Its movement has distinctions of waxing, full moon, new moon, and the beginning of the month, as well as differences in speed and yin and yang, which correspond to the hierarchy of decrees and punishments.
The sun moves one degree each day; the moon moves thirteen degrees and four hundred ninety-four parts of a thousand three hundred forty parts each day—this is an approximate average rate of motion for the sun and moon. In the year of Yisi (乙巳) of the Upper Origin, on the night of the winter solstice on the first day of the eleventh month, the sun and moon combined as if two jade disks joined together, and the five stars aligned like a string of pearls, all starting from the mansion of Emptiness in the north. This moment was both a conjunction of the moon and sun and the winter solstice. The moon and sun began their motion together, each following their own path. From the Upper Origin to the present era of the Zhen Guan third year (贞观三年) in the year of Jichou (己丑), the total accumulated value is seventy-nine thousand three hundred forty-five. The method for calculating the new moon day of each month is as follows: list the accumulated values of the new moons since the Upper Origin year of Yisi (乙巳), which have already been calculated in the previous chapter on calculating solar and lunar positions. Divide this value by the "month method" of thirty-nine thousand five hundred seventy-one. If it divides evenly, the remainder is used to divide by the "day method" to obtain the "leap large remainder" as an integer, and the leftover part is the "leap small remainder." Then subtract this from the small remainder of the winter solstice. If the small remainder is insufficient for subtraction, borrow one day from the large remainder, add the "day method" value, and then subtract. If the large remainder is also insufficient, add sixty and then subtract. (The large and small remainders of the winter solstice are also calculated together in the previous chapter on calculating solar and lunar positions.) The remaining value is the result sought, which is the large and small remainders of the first month of the year. Starting from Jiazi (甲子) without counting it as part of the number gives the stem-branch of the new moon day of the first month.
To find the new moon day of the next month: add twenty-nine to the large remainder and seven hundred and eleven to the small remainder of the current month. If the small remainder exceeds the day cycle, subtract the day cycle and add one to the large remainder. If the large remainder exceeds sixty, subtract sixty. Use the same method for determining the stem and branch as before, and you will obtain the new moon day and its remainder for the next month. To find the day of the first quarter moon: add seven to the large remainder and five hundred and twelve to the small remainder of the new moon day. If the large remainder exceeds sixty, subtract sixty. Use the same method as before to determine the day, which is the usual day for the first quarter moon. Add again to get the full moon day, add again to get the last quarter moon day, and add again to get the new moon day of the next month. The time between one new moon and the next is twenty-nine days and seven hundred and eleven parts, which is called a "month." Within this month, the moon travels around the sky once and goes beyond twenty-nine degrees and seven hundred and eleven parts, and thus meets the sun again. To find the degree of the moon at midnight on the new moon day: take the degree of the sun at the time of the new moon, subtract the small remainder, and this gives the degree of the moon at midnight on the new moon day. To find the degree of the moon at midnight on the following day: add thirteen degrees and four hundred and ninety-four parts of one thousand three hundred and forty to the previous day's degree. If the parts exceed the day cycle, carry over one degree. If the degrees exceed the length of a constellation, subtract the length of that constellation and start counting from the next constellation without including the current one. This gives the degree and the parts of the moon at midnight on the following day.
The above discusses the average movement of the moon. In reality, the moon's movement varies in speed: at its slowest, it moves more than twelve degrees per day, and at its fastest, more than fourteen degrees per day. The general pattern is that after the new moon, the moon moves fastest, then gradually slows down, reaching its slowest point after about thirteen and a half days. Then it gradually speeds up again, reaching its fastest point after another thirteen and a half days. Combined, one slow and one fast movement take about twenty-nine and a half days. The moon also moves along two paths, the yin and yang paths. At the beginning of the first period, after the new moon, the moon moves outside the sun's path, along the yang path. After about thirteen and a half days, it enters the sun's path, crosses the Yellow Path and moves along the yin path. After another thirteen and a half days, it moves outside the Yellow Path again. The place where the moon crosses the Yellow Path is called the "intersection path." Approximately twenty-seven and a half days, the moon enters and exits the Yellow Path twice, crossing it. The Yellow Path is the path of the sun. The moon does not travel along the same path as the sun, just as a minister should not share the same title and objects with the sovereign. When the moon is farthest from the sun, it is about six degrees away on either side. On the new moon day, when the moon is at the same degree as the sun, if it is exactly at the intersection point, an eclipse occurs; if not, there is no eclipse. This is like a minister meeting the sovereign on the same path and misusing power, thus obscuring the sovereign. On the full moon day, if the moon passes through the intersection path, there will be an eclipse; if not, there will be none. These calculation methods are written in the "Historical Records of Calendars and Celestial Phenomena" and the "Yisi Fundamental Classic," because the details are complex and cannot be fully listed here, so only the main points are briefly mentioned.
The moon's movement, whenever it is new, first receives the light from the sun, then gradually spreads its own brightness, becoming brighter the farther it moves from the sun. It travels among the twenty-eight mansions, not following the path of the sun's light. When it reaches its fullest, it begins to contract again, shrinking its form and concealing its radiance. Though it is full, it does not exceed its proper bounds, until it becomes dark again, following the natural order. This is like ministers and feudal lords who carry out the commands of the sovereign, following the laws and regulations to govern the entire realm, examining the affairs of officials, yet without thoughts of overstepping their authority. When they have achieved success, they attribute it to the sovereign, not boasting about their own merits, and upon completion of their tasks, they return to report to the sovereign. However, once the sun and moon are evenly matched, opposing each other, the moon's light reaches its peak and its power increases. When its fullness is complete and its momentum reaches its peak, disaster will suddenly arrive in an instant. Then the sun takes away its brightness, and the dark energy weakens its form. A slight overstep leads to a slight loss, a great arrogance leads to a great loss—this is an inevitable outcome according to the principles of nature.
Therefore, an enlightened sovereign in power ensures the moon follows its regular course; when the sovereign is incompetent, ministers dominate, and the moon deviates from its path. When ministers wield power unjustly, abandoning righteousness and pursuing private gain, military affairs and legal punishments become disorderly, and the moon moves erratically, sometimes to the south and sometimes to the north. When female rulers or maternal relatives dominate, the moon advances and retreats irregularly, producing phenomena such as 'fei' (early brightening of the new moon) and 'na' (retreating moon not reaching its full extent), which are signs of disorder. These are all consequences of the sovereign and ministers failing to uphold virtue, education, punishment, and governance properly. Whenever the moon's movement deviates from its normal course, it should be interpreted according to the corresponding events to determine auspiciousness or inauspiciousness. If the moon moves quickly, it indicates the sovereign applies lenient punishment; if it moves slowly, it suggests the sovereign enforces strict punishment. The moon and sun differ in their speed, and thus correspond to different situations. Liu Xiang said: 'Therefore, when a sovereign encounters a lunar anomaly, he should reduce punishments and levies to cultivate virtue, widely extend grace and pardon offenders. Hence, the Spring and Autumn Annals contain examples of leniency in response to calamitous phenomena.'
If the moon changes its color, calamity will follow: a green moon indicates famine and distress, a red moon signifies conflict and warfare, a yellow moon suggests virtue and celebration, a white moon portends drought and mourning, and a black moon foretells floods, illness, and even death among the people. If the moon shines brightly during the day: the moon symbolizes ministers, while the sun represents the sovereign. Ministers should continue the sovereign's brightness, each fulfilling their proper time, and must not contend with the sovereign. When the moon shines brightly during the day, it indicates that wicked people are rising together. If not corrected, the moon will lose its normal course and inevitably become obscured. The remedy is to dismiss arrogant ministers, eliminate cunning villains, approach loyal and upright men, and appoint capable talents. In this way, the moon will return to its normal path and cease to rival the sun. Therefore, if a sovereign and his ministers do not govern according to the four seasons, apply punishments improperly, and ministers harbor deceitful schemes, demote the virtuous and suppress the capable, then the sun and moon will lose their brightness and show blemishes. If this wrongdoing is not corrected, the five grains will not mature, the six domestic animals will not multiply, the people will be divided and disunited, and bandits will rise together.
The moon rising from an inappropriate direction and not following its proper path indicates that the female ruler behaves improperly, engaging in secret affairs and conspiracies. Small states have strong military forces, while the people in the central region suffer from famine. Those in lower positions desire to usurp power. When the new moon appears with a body lying horizontally and two horns pointing upward, it signifies military conflicts across the land. If the two horns are closed together, there will be no military conflicts, but the sovereign will face misfortune. If the moon moves too quickly, reaching the zenith before it should or becoming full before the full moon, this is called 'urgency,' leading to large-scale battles, military defeats, the death of generals, ministers taking control and forcing the sovereign, or the emergence of a female ruler seizing power, resulting in chaos throughout the land and the change of the ancestral temples' rulers. If the moon should not be waning but is already waning, it indicates the execution of ministers, the demotion of the female ruler, and the extinction of the feudal families. If the moon appears twice in the sky in one night, it signifies the exhaustion of the sovereign's destiny.
When the moon should appear but does not, it indicates plots and the death of a ruler, leading to chaos throughout the land. If the moon appears before the waxing phase but already shows a crescent shape, it signifies the outbreak of military conflicts within the country. If it appears before the waning phase but already shows a crescent shape, it indicates that ministers are acting deceitfully. If the moon should be full but is not, it suggests that the ruler encroaches upon the positions of his ministers, leading to a great drought. If the moon should not be full but is full, it indicates that ministers deceive the ruler, and there will be military conflicts. If the moon appears bright and strong at the beginning of the month, it suggests that a female ruler dominates the court. On the eighth day of a large month or the seventh day of a small month, if the moon has already passed the meridian by dusk, it indicates military conflict; if it has not yet reached the meridian, it indicates mourning. On the fifth day of the moon's appearance, if the moon is exceptionally bright after dusk, it indicates that the ruler lacks virtue, wicked ministers hold power, and the people turn away from the ruler to support the ministers.
The moon wanes westward before the full moon and wanes eastward after the full moon; this is called "reverse moon," indicating that ministers and subjects do not abide by laws and regulations, and encroach upon the authority of the sovereign. If not corrected, there will be sudden floods and military conflicts. The remedy is to cease the excessive use of punishments, eliminate wicked and cunning people, and appoint virtuous talents to consult on difficult matters. Once plans are settled and affairs are completed, the moon's anomaly will not result in casualties. When the moon has not fully disappeared on the new moon day, it indicates that the country corresponding to the star mansion where the moon resides will lose territory. If the new moon appears small but looks broad and expansive, it foretells water disasters. If the moon appears large but seems small, it indicates drought. If the moon's color is abnormal, it suggests that the queen consort is plotting something.
When the moon is newly born and black clouds cross its body, this is called "jī yún"; whether one, two, three, or four streaks appear, heavy rain with thunder and lightning will occur within three days. If there is a yellow light above the moon, it indicates the monarch will have great prosperity and the queen will be joyful. If the moon develops spikes, this signifies a wicked minister will be born in the Central Plains. If the moon shows a tooth-like缺口, it indicates the female ruler or concubine will cause chaos and warfare will break out across the land. If the moon shows claw-like shapes, it indicates the monarch's rewards and punishments will not be carried out; another method of divination says that there should be vigilance among the monarch's attendants for an assassin.
On the day of the full moon, although the moon appears round, the shadow of the moon goddess is not visible, indicating that the country corresponding to the star mansion where the moon resides will experience flooding of mountains and rivers, the collapse of cities, and the dispersion of the people. It also signifies that the female ruler will not find peace within the palace. When the moon rises and then disappears again, it foretells great chaos throughout the realm. If the moon splits into two parts, it indicates that an unjust ruler will lose the mandate of heaven. If the moon falls from the sky, it signifies the death of a virtuous minister. If the moon rises from the underground at the Zi position in the north, it indicates that a common person will rise to become a king.
When two moons appear together and overlap, it indicates an imminent military disaster. When three moons appear simultaneously, it suggests that a person will be appointed as a feudal lord in the region corresponding to the moon's position, and there will be rivalry among female rulers. When two moons appear together, it signifies that the whole country will prepare for military defense, and powerful ministers of different families will compete for power in the court, leading to calamity. The king should appoint capable people to important positions. When the moon appears twice, it indicates severe military disasters that will harm the people, and the cause of great turmoil will arise, which is a sign that the天下 (the world or realm) is about to be lost.
I was living in Jiangdu in the ninth year of the Great Peace era of the Sui Dynasty, at the age of thirteen, staying there for study and travel. In the first lunar month, I went to the eastern part of the city to attend a funeral in order to show filial piety. That day was the twenty-seventh day of the first month, and in the early morning, I saw two moons appearing in the east, about two feet apart, clearly hanging between the Winnowing Basket mansion and the Dipper mansion. Everyone was greatly frightened. Soon after, Yang Xiangan raised rebellion in Liyang, and Zhu Xie and Guan Chong caused harm to the people in the Jiangnan region. From then on, the country was plagued by war and bandits, until the fall of the Sui Dynasty. This was a great fulfillment of the prophecy.
In the east, a small moon supports a large moon, indicating that a small country will be destroyed, and a great country will attack it and become the leader, with calamity occurring in the west. When a small moon supports a large moon, it signifies that a small town will prevail; when a large moon supports a small moon, it signifies that a large town will prevail. Between the first and last quarters, the moonlight is bright and the moon appears numerous, sometimes two, three, four, five, or even ten moons appearing together, all indicating the division of the world, and the authority of the Son of Heaven falling into the hands of the feudal lords, who then establish themselves independently. As for the signs associated with the feudal lords, their divination methods are largely the same as those for the signs accompanying the sun.
The moon and the five planets are related and may cause omens, as described in the eighth section.
Whenever the five planets and the twenty-eight constellations together with the moon mutually eclipse each other or approach closely, it indicates misfortune. If the star of wood (Jupiter) eclipses the moon, it signifies a great calamity, the death of a female ruler, and a minister killing the king to replace the ruler. If the malefic of violence (Mars) eclipses the moon, it indicates that a minister who spreads false words will gain power, and there will be a woman in the palace who plots against the king. If the star of earth (Saturn) eclipses the moon, it indicates misfortune for the female ruler, with someone being deposed and mourning. If the star of metal (Venus) eclipses the moon, it signifies a change of a great general and the death of a general. If the star of water (Mercury) eclipses the moon, it indicates a great flood. If the five planets enter the moon's body, it indicates that in the region corresponding to the planet, there will be an act of expelling the king and ministers plotting against the king.
When the moon eclipses the five planets, if the planet it is eclipsing is in the area of the sky corresponding to that star, there will be calamity. If the moon attacks the planet of Jupiter, it indicates many thieves and frequent legal cases in the current year. If the moon and the planet of Jupiter have the same color and brightness, there will be famine and death. (If the moon and the planet of Saturn have the same color and brightness, the interpretation is the same.) If the moon and the planet of Jupiter are in the same mansion, there will be an epidemic in the current year. If the moon and the planet of Mars conflict with each other, it indicates the death of a general of a victorious country and worries brought about by a female ruler. If the moon and the planet of Mars have the same color and brightness, there will be internal disorder and famine. If the moon swallows the planet of Mars, the country will collapse. If the moon attacks the planet of Saturn, the female ruler will lose power and there will be mourning. (In the second year of Qinglong in the Wei dynasty, October Yichou, the moon attacked the planet of Saturn; in the third year of Qinglong, January, the Empress Dowger Guo died. In the fourth year of Long'an during the reign of Emperor Jian of Jin, January Yihai, the planet of Saturn was in the mansion of the Ox; the moon repeatedly attacked it; in July Renzi of that year, the Empress Dowager Li died.) If the planet of Saturn enters the moon's body, there will be construction projects within forty days; if it merely conflicts with the moon, it indicates the extinction of a noble family.
When the bright star enters the moon and the starlight disappears, it indicates that a minister will kill the sovereign. If the moon covers the bright star, it signifies the death of the sovereign and the killing of the sovereign by a minister. If the moon approaches the bright star, it indicates that the general has a double mind. If the bright star is above the moon, it indicates sudden military conflict. On the third day of the moon's birth, if the moon's light points to the southern yang position of the bright star, it indicates that a large city in the southern country will win, while small towns will suffer damage. If the moon's light points to the northern yin position of the bright star, it indicates that the army outside will not have time to return, and the army inside will not have time to move. If the moon and the bright star share the same host, it indicates the death of the crown prince.
When the bright star (Tai Bai) appears in the west and is located north of the moon, it is called "getting the right path," and if it is south of the moon, it is called "losing the right path"; at this time, the side that initiates the military action in the west will suffer defeat. If the bright star is three feet away from the moon, it indicates military worries; two feet away, it indicates worries about defending the city; one foot away, it indicates the city being attacked and captured. If the bright star enters the moon's body without emerging, it signifies the death of both the guest and the host generals; if it emerges, it signifies the death of the host's general. If there is no military action, the omen will be fulfilled in the person of the great general.
Venus appears in the east, south of the moon, indicating victory for the Central Plains; if it is north of the moon, it indicates defeat for the Central Plains. Venus appears in the west, north of the moon, indicating victory for the country with its back to the mountains and front to the sea; if it is south of the moon, it indicates defeat for that country. When Venus, Mars, and the moon are close to each other, with a distance of six inches between them, it indicates warfare across the land; if they are separated by one foot, it indicates worry across the land; if they are separated by more than one foot and a half, there will be no harm.
The star Tai Bai appears in the west, appearing in shape like the moon. If it is observed for three consecutive days, noting its appearance together with the moon: if the space between them can accommodate the width of one finger, and there are armies outside, the time limit is ten days, there will be the defeat of armies and the death of generals, with the guest army winning. If the space can accommodate the width of two fingers, the time limit is fifteen days, there will be the defeat of armies and the death of generals, with the main army achieving a small victory. If the space can accommodate the width of three fingers, the time limit is twenty days, there will be the defeat of armies and the death of generals, with the guest army achieving a great victory and the main army losing territory. If the space can accommodate the width of four fingers, the time limit is twenty-five days, the guest army will invade the territory of the main army, and the main army will not be able to win. If the space can accommodate the width of five fingers, the time limit is thirty days, the two armies will form lines but not engage in battle.
When the planet Tai Bai (Venus) appears in the last day of the first month, rising in the east in the morning along with the moon, one should use a finger to measure the distance between them: if the gap can accommodate one finger, within ten days there will be military defeats and the death of generals, indicating the main army will not win. If the gap can accommodate two fingers, within fifteen days the guest army will suffer a great defeat and the main army will gain territory. If the gap can accommodate three fingers, within twenty days there will be military defeats and the death of generals, indicating the main army will lose territory. If the gap can accommodate four fingers, within twenty-five days the guest army will suffer a great defeat. If the gap can accommodate five fingers, within thirty days both armies will form lines but not engage in battle. (Tai Bai refers to the planet Venus, and the method of divination is the same as for other stars.)
The moon is eclipsed by the planet Jupiter, or Jupiter enters the moon's body, indicating the emergence of water-related construction projects, which will occur within thirty days. Within the court, there will be secret plots. Heavy rains will occur in spring and summer, leading to floods. In the thirteenth year of Emperor Xiaowu of the Jin Dynasty, during the eleventh month on the fifth day of the Wuzi cycle, Jupiter entered the moon, positioned at the Rooftop mansion. At that time, the river tide surged into the city of Shitou, spring rains did not cease, cattle and horses contracted diseases, and grain prices soared. All these events were fulfilled within a hundred days.

In the second month of the third year of Emperor Xiaowu of Jin's Taoyuan era, on theGuihai day, the moon entered Di Xu; General Wei Ke led troops to attack Runan, Fu Jian and his son, along with more than ten thousand troops, invaded Xiangyang. That year there was great military activity. If the moon passes through the middle of Tian Si (the four stars of the House Mansion), it indicates the whole year will be peaceful and the five grains will be abundant. If the moon travels along the sun's path to the north of the House Mansion, it indicates great chaos throughout the country, neglect of civil affairs, people weeping, and people dying before the number of yang paths is exhausted; if the moon travels along the yin path to the south of the House Mansion, it indicates there will be new events in the country, and the number of yin paths is not yet exhausted but the events have already occurred. If the moon exits from the middle path between the two robes, it indicates peace throughout the country and is favorable for military campaigns. If there is an anomaly in the House Mansion, it is called "Name Treasure Emerges," indicating that carriages and horses will be seen everywhere, generals will be restless, and government orders will be inappropriate.
