Three Punishments Law

歲刑，月刑，日刑。亦云：刑上，刑下，自刑。

The Three Punishments refer to year punishment, month punishment, and day punishment. There is another说法 that refers to the Three Punishments as punishment above, punishment below, and self-punishment.

子刑卯，卯刑子；寅刑巳，巳刑申，申刑寅；未刑丑，丑刑戌；辰午酉亥自刑。

The order of Earthly Branches mutual punishment is: Zi punishes Mao, and Mao also punishes Zi; Yin punishes Si, Si punishes Shen, and Shen also punishes Yin; Wei punishes Chou, and Chou punishes Xu; Chen, Wu, You, and Hai each punish themselves, which is called self-punishment.

假如子年，及十一月，並子日，從卯上來是；卯年，及二月，並卯日，從子上來是；寅年，及正月，並寅日，從巳上來是；巳年，及四月，並巳日，從申上來是；申年，及七月，並申日，從寅上來是；未年，及六月，並未日，從丑上來是；丑年，及十二月，並丑日，從未上來是；其辰午酉亥年，並三月、五月、八月、十月，及辰午酉亥日，皆從本位上來是也。

The method of calculation is as follows: for example, if in the year of Zi, the month of the eleventh, or the day of Zi, the wind comes from the Mao direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Mao, the month of the second, or the day of Mao, the wind comes from the Zi direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Yin, the month of the first, or the day of Yin, the wind comes from the Si direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Si, the month of the fourth, or the day of Si, the wind comes from the Shen direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Shen, the month of the seventh, or the day of Shen, the wind comes from the Yin direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Wei, the month of the sixth, or the day of Wei, the wind comes from the Chou direction, it is considered a violation. If in the year of Chou, the month of the twelfth, or the day of Chou, the wind comes from the Wei direction, it is considered a violation. As for the years of Chen, Wu, You, and Hai, as well as the months of the third, fifth, eighth, and tenth, and the days of Chen, Wu, You, and Hai, if the wind comes from their respective directions, it is considered a violation.

金墓於丑，木墓於未，水土墓於辰，火墓於戌。假如是金日，從丑上來是；木日，從未上來是；水土日，辰上來是；火日，戌上來是。

TheStorage of metal is in Chou, theStorage of wood is in Wei, theStorage of water and earth is in Chen, and theStorage of fire is in Xu. For example, if the day is of metal and the wind comes from the Chou position, it is considered to be in theStorage; if the day is of wood and the wind comes from the Wei position, it is considered to be in theStorage; if the day is of water or earth and the wind comes from the Chen position, it is considered to be in theStorage; if the day is of fire and the wind comes from the Xu position, it is considered to be in theStorage.

甲日德在甲，乙日德在庚，丙日德在丙，丁日德在壬，戊日德在戊，己日德在甲，庚日德在庚，辛日德在丙，壬日德在壬，癸日德在戊。

On the day of Jia, the virtuous deity is at the Jia position; on the day of Yi, the virtuous deity is at the Geng position; on the day of Bing, the virtuous deity is at the Bing position; on the day of Ding, the virtuous deity is at the Ren position; on the day of Wu, the virtuous deity is at the Wu position; on the day of Ji, the virtuous deity is at the Jia position; on the day of Geng, the virtuous deity is at the Geng position; on the day of Xin, the virtuous deity is at the Bing position; on the day of Ren, the virtuous deity is at the Ren position; on the day of Gui, the virtuous deity is at the Wu position.

初起之時候之，若天氣溫和，不動塵埃，條風來者，皆為祥風，如更從日德上來者，必有大喜。若飛沙揚石，折木揭屋，東西不定，旗旛繞槍，皆為災風。若風來颯颯，人盡森悚，皆為賊風；若更自三刑五墓上來，即須倍加隄備，勿與戰，吉；賊風若從當軍德上來，戰之必勝。凡風定後有雨者，不為災，不占；若雨晴後風起者，占之。

When the wind first begins to rise, one should observe it. If the weather is mild and the wind passes without stirring up dust, and it comes from the northeast direction as the 'Tiao Feng' (a gentle wind), these are signs of auspicious winds. If the wind also comes from the direction of the day's virtue god, there will certainly be great joy. However, if the wind carries sand and stones, breaks trees, and lifts roofs, and changes direction frequently between east and west, with banners and flags entangled on spears, these are signs of calamitous winds. If the wind is loud and causes people to feel a chill, it is considered a thief wind. If this thief wind comes from the direction of the Three Punishments or the Five Tombs, one must be doubly cautious and avoid battle for good fortune. If the thief wind comes from the direction of the army's virtue god, then engaging in battle will surely result in victory. If the wind stops and rain follows, it is not considered an omen and does not require divination. However, if the wind arises after the rain has cleared, then it should be divined.
