The sixth十一 chapter on divination concerning the appearance of military formations and arrays.
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The qi color is blue with a white tinge, with the white qi located above, indicating a commanding general who is brave and fierce, and there will be a major battle. The qi appears as if without a head, or like a dead person lying horizontally; the enemy's qi above their camp resembles a red snake, followed by red qi, which certainly indicates a major battle resulting in the loss of generals. If there are no clouds in all directions, but only red qi resembling a dog darting into the camp, there will be bloodshed below the camp. If there are no clouds in all directions, but only red clouds resembling an upright snake, there will be an engagement and bloodshed below. If there are no clouds in all directions, but only red clouds resembling an overturned boat, there will be battle below. On the day of the initial deployment, if the sky is dark and misty, with clouds that are gloomy and carry a chilling coldness, a battle is certain. If the sky is clear and bright, warm and pleasant, with no wind or dust, then even the enemy will not be encountered, and there will be no battle.
If a green mist appears in the direction of the king's position and the minister's position, there will be a battle at the hour of戌; if this mist does not appear, there will be no battle. If a white rainbow or a red curved rainbow appears over the city, there will certainly be a great battle with bloodshed below. If red mist coils and remains still, there will also be military conflict and bloodshed below. If white mist enters the middle of the Big Dipper like a carriage and moves, there will be bloodshed below, and the general will die. If clouds are arranged like furrows in a field, there will certainly be a great battle and chaos. If mist appears beside the Sun, either crossing over it or moving away from it, it indicates discord among the generals. If white mist like a rainbow appears above the Sun, the side attacking downward will win; if this phenomenon occurs without any army, there will certainly be bloodshed below. When two armies are facing each other, a battle is certain; if white rainbows are arranged continuously in four, five, or six lines, it also indicates a great battle.
The Star of brightness and prestige has a defect beside it, indicating that over ten thousand people will die beneath it; when two armies face each other, it is not favorable to strike first. If a lunar eclipse occurs shortly after the moon is full, there must be a battle involving troops stationed outside. If the sun and moon are blocked by red clouds in the middle, appearing like a large wooden mallet, then if troops are stationed outside, over ten thousand people will die beneath it; when two armies are in a stalemate, it is also not favorable to strike first.
Diagram of the Sixth Twelfth Weather Forecast
White clouds gathering in groups, moving about and forming an array, indicate that people from another country are coming to plot against us; we must not rashly engage in battle. Observe their direction and follow them to attack and succeed. When the sun and moon are dim and lack brightness, soldiers may rebel internally, so the general should abide by laws and examine those who have merited rewards to demonstrate fairness. If there is a rebellion within the army, immediate strict rewards and punishments should be enforced to stop the disturbance, and secretly investigate traitors to prevent them from conspiring. If the sky is gloomy but no rain falls, the sun is not visible during the day, and the stars and moon are not visible at night, and this lasts for more than three days, it indicates someone is plotting secretly. The general should be cautious of his attendants and enemy envoys. If it lasts five to seven days, there is a hidden plot, and the general may lose his command, which is an act of treason and murder. If the gloom continues for ten days, with winds rising everywhere and rain expected but not coming, this weather phenomenon is called "Meng," indicating subordinates plotting against the sovereign. Therefore, prolonged gloom without rain signifies that ministers are scheming against the sovereign.
The sky is dark and gloomy, the sun and moon lose their brightness, the sun cannot be seen during the day and the stars and moon cannot be seen at night, all covered by clouds without rain. This indicates that both the sovereign and his ministers are harboring secret schemes. Two opposing forces are holding each other in check, also secretly plotting against each other. If the sky is dark during the day but the moon appears at night, it means the sovereign is scheming against his ministers. If the sky is dark at night but the sun appears during the day, it means the ministers are scheming against the sovereign. Black clouds resembling ceremonial banners rise from the enemy's camp, dark at the top and yellow at the bottom. This indicates the enemy wants to fight but has no real intention, their words contradict their oaths, and they intend to conspire with our internal traitors. Their plot targets our generals. Once the news spreads, they will be discovered within nine days. If we prepare early, it will be auspicious. Black clouds press down upon our army, rolling like a chariot. This indicates the enemy is plotting rebellion, and our ministers are colluding with them, also enticing the lower officials. If the sovereign enforces punishment, it will be auspicious. Black clouds move about, containing five colors, pressing over our army. The enemy will certainly seek to unite the feudal lords to attack us. However, the feudal lords will have their own schemes, and the enemy army will eventually collapse on its own.
The Sixthty-Third Chapter on Auspicious and Inauspicious Signs
"Qingyun" appears in a red and purple color, resembling smoke but not smoke, resembling clouds but not clouds. It is dense and flowing, spreading and curling in a spiral manner. This is called "Qingyun," also known as "Jingyun." When a country sees it, it signifies joy and celebration. Clouds containing five colors, moist and slow-moving, appearing above a city, are called "Jingyun," which is also referred to as "Qingyun." Not being smoke or vapor, and with five colors blending and spreading, it is also called "Qingyun." "Jingyun" is an omen of the world being at peace. Clouds with all five colors are called "Qingyun," while those with only three colors are called "Yuyun." Another account says that "Yuyun" is when the outer part is red and the inner part is blue.
A red cloud resembling a dragon is called "Changguang," and it appears when a king rises to power. It is like a star but not a star, like a cloud but not a cloud. Some say it is a star accompanied by rain vapor. A red comet-like appearance, with a top like an umbrella and a lower part connected to a star, is called "Guixie." When "Guixie" appears, it indicates that people will certainly pledge allegiance to the country. A yellow halo around the sun, as well as various types of halos such as "bao," "er," "zhi," and "lv" that also appear yellow, all signify auspicious events. Jing Fang's "Yi Fei Hou" states: observe the four directions, and if there are often large clouds with five colors but no rain, there must be a virtuous person living in seclusion below. A blue cloud that moistens and covers the sun, appearing in the northwest, indicates that the court will appoint virtuous and capable officials.
Black clouds appear like a wide road, several to five pieces of cloth wide, bright but with neither beginning nor end visible. There will be a great amnesty in the country within three months. Red clouds cover the army like an open umbrella. If fighting within a thousand li, there will be good news; if marching beyond a thousand li, there will be disaster. Yellow clouds pressing over the camp, extending west or east, indicate a bad battle; if extending north, it is auspicious. Red clouds rising with the sun indicate military worries; if setting with the sun, there will be urgent news from the outside, some say the country will issue an edict to attack the enemy. If already on campaign but unable to advance, it is ominous. Red clouds spreading in a blood-red color indicate bloodshed. Red clouds appearing like the shadow of fire indicate betrayal by ministers to the sovereign, within three months. Red clouds like dragons and snakes resting on mountain peaks, or glowing at night, indicate ministers turning against the sovereign, the sovereign's unrest, injury from an external ruler, and people migrating away from their homeland.
A red cloud covers the Sun but the Sun still shines, indicating a great drought and famine within a thousand li. How can we know if bandits can be captured? If the red cloud moves forward and the black cloud follows, when the red cloud is eliminated, the bandits can be captured. If the red cloud moves alone without the black cloud following, the bandits cannot be captured. If the black cloud resembles a dead person's head hovering over the enemy camp, the enemy will offer tribute and request surrender; if we do not agree, there will certainly be a battle, the achievements may be achieved, but many soldiers will die. If the black cloud resembles a bull's head, a dragon, a horse, or a snake, it indicates an epidemic, people fleeing, and it is unfavorable for pregnant women. All the barbarian forces will want to attack the Central Plains. We should send scouts and be cautious of slanderous influences.
Recently, if the army goes out to march eastward for a campaign, and there is white cloud coming from the west following along, then follow it and attack, and you will win. If there is red cloud coming from the east to meet the army, the enemy will win and our army will lose; we should quickly set up camp and hold our position. Other directions can be judged in the same way. Black clouds resembling piled-up earth pressing over our army indicate that the enemy will attack us; we must hold our position for a month. When the enemy's morale disperses, then we can fight again and surely win. If the enemy is facing us in the east, and white clouds go eastward, with clouds also coming from the east to meet them, the two clouds meet and pass each other in a short time, and after the clouds have gone, wind follows, and the visible vapor resembles dragons and tigers, then as long as these signs appear on our side, they indicate a great victory. However, even if the clouds move in the right direction but the wind blows against it, we should not engage in battle. If there is cloud moving horizontally, the two armies will not fight; we should quickly hide and hold back, otherwise there will be the escape of generals. If black clouds move with yellow clouds in the middle appearing over our army, we should quickly order the army to advance; if we do not fight quickly, the soldiers will become fearful and everyone will have the intention to flee, and then we should retreat and return as a good omen.
Two armies are facing each other, and the aura above the enemy's troops is red. The upper part resembles a piece of cloth, wide and long for dozens of zhang, while the lower part is yellow and white. The side with such an aura must have a unit that is about to defect. If this is seen at dusk, the defecting force is among the officials and assistants; if seen at night, it is the soldiers who will defect. One should be on guard. Whenever a besieged force looks up at the sky above the city, if the aura is thick like fire and the light converges and gathers with a strong presence, then troops coming to rescue will arrive from that direction. If there is no such aura, there will be no rescue force. If a white vapor like a rainbow appears during the march, the army will suffer great disturbance and should be on alert. If black clouds form an array in the north-south direction, the country will face calamity; otherwise, there will be a great flood causing disaster.
White clouds and white vapor stretching across the sky in a north-south formation indicate calamity; black clouds forming an east-west formation indicate trouble for the sovereign. If the sky is hazy and a vapor stretches from east to west across the sky without moving for several days, the calamity will be more severe. If this vapor appears on the Wu or Ji days, it will lead to disaster. If there is a green vapor stretching from east to west at sunset, and there is no rain or wind within the period calculated by the heavenly stems and earthly branches, there will be a major mourning event within three years. If red clouds cover a besieged city and form an east-west formation, the country will be defeated in battle. The third type of mist appears on the days of Geng, Xin, Shen, and You in autumn, with a white color moving eastward, which is favorable for a military expedition. The one who attacks first will win, while the one who attacks later will lose.
The second type of mist appears on days of Bing and Ding in summer, with a reddish-yellow color, moving toward the west, benefiting the guest army, while the defending side's ruler suffers misfortune. The fourth type of mist appears on days of Ren and Gui in winter, with a dark blue-black color, moving toward the south, indicating the mobilization of troops. The fifth type of mist appears on days of Wu and Ji in the last months of the four seasons, with a yellow color, moving toward the north, benefiting the guest army, while the defending side's ruler faces internal disorder. The first type of mist appears on days of Jia and Yi in spring, with a green color, originating from the east and pointing toward the four cardinal directions, indicating victory for the guest army. If mist rises in the mountains in winter and does not dissipate for ten days, it is a sign that the mountain is about to collapse. If clouds move like a piece of silk and point toward the southwest or toward a particular city or county, the ruler of that place will face troubles. If clouds are chaotic and seem to scatter, a strong wind is about to arrive, so one should observe the direction from which it comes and take measures to block it. If clouds are very moist and thick, heavy rain is certain to come suddenly.
At the beginning of each year, month, day, and hour, if black clouds appear arranged like an army formation, thick and heavy with much rain-like vapor, neither fog nor clear, moistening people's hats and clothes, then the soldiers of that city will put on armor and flee. When the sun rises or sets, if clouds block the sun's middle, white clouds indicate mourning, black clouds indicate disturbance; if it rains within three days, the calamity will be resolved. If clouds resemble a male rabbit, appearing over a military camp, soldiers will die. If blue clouds appear in the sky and enter the camp, the army will be weak and full of fear; if red clouds enter the camp, there will be sudden chaos; if yellow clouds enter the camp, military affairs will be resolved; if white clouds enter the camp, the army will be strong; if black clouds enter the camp, soldiers will get sick, or alternatively, soldiers will fight among themselves, so the camp should be moved quickly. If clouds resemble a dragon, appearing over a general's position, the general will be confused and disoriented. If clouds look like a swan's tail, drifting over a besieged city, the city will fall and its people will perish within three days.
There is a saying that if clouds appear like a solar halo or lunar halo and are red in color, the country will have calamities; if they are green and white, there will be great floods. If clouds appear in the shape of a dragon moving, the country will suffer great floods and the people will flee. If clouds appear red-yellow and block all directions, shining all day and all night over the land, it indicates that ministers will be arrogant and tyrannical. If the cloud vapor is dark and turbid, it signifies the departure of virtuous people and the rise of petty men.
When encountering the flourishing energies of the four directions, do not attack in that direction. On days of Jia and Yi, the green energy is in the east; on days of Bing and Ding, the red energy is in the south; on days of Geng and Xin, the white energy is in the west; on days of Ren and Gui, the black energy is in the north; and on days of Wu and Ji, the yellow energy is in the center. When fighting on the days of the four seasons, following the prevailing energy of that day brings good fortune, while going against it leads to defeat. On days of Jia and Yi, if there is white cloud in the direction you are facing in the morning, do not attack; on days of Bing and Ding, if there is black cloud in the direction you are facing, it indicates strong fortifications, so do not attack; the rest follow the same pattern. Red energy that is as red as fire indicates betrayal by subordinates to their superiors. If red energy is present in the west, the guest army will win; if it is in the north, the guest army will lose; if it is in the east, both sides will reconcile and not fight; if it is in the south, the army will return, the world will be at peace, and there will be no military action; the rest follow the same pattern.
Whenever five-colored clouds appear in the sky, looking toward the east, west, south, and north, they extend straight to the four cardinal directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You. Their length may be hundreds or thousands of paces, or a few zhangs, or just a few chi, or hundreds of zhangs, as long as a carriage road. If the day branch is in mutual control with the cloud, it indicates a great battle; if not in mutual control, the worries of those living away from home will be removed. The direction where the royal aura is present receives the mandate of heaven and has strong military power; the direction where the auspicious aura is present leads to victory in battle and officials achieve great deeds; the direction where the death aura is present indicates death, illness, famine, and defeat; the direction where the imprisonment aura is present indicates being surrounded and surrendering; the direction where the rest aura is present indicates withdrawing troops without success and soldiers fleeing and dispersing. If there is black cloud in the sun's face, it indicates the ruler has minor faults. Ministers neither conceal the ruler's faults nor promote the ruler's virtues, so black clouds appear in the sun, and the sunlight becomes dim for this reason.
All occurrences of white rainbows signify the beginning of chaos and the root of all calamities. Mist represents various evil and perverse energies, where the yin energy rises to offend the yang energy, symbolizing ministers plotting against the sovereign and usurping authority. This kind of energy in the sky is called "meng," and on the ground it is called "mist." When both the sun and moon are obscured, it is called "meng," and when people in front and behind cannot see each other, it is called "mist." Mist symbolizes the intentions of ministers: if fog appears in the day and clears at night, the ministers' intentions can be expressed; if fog appears at night and clears in the day, the ministers' intentions are restrained. Another interpretation is that when the sovereign's decrees are perverse, the subjects rise above the sovereign, and ministers plot to defy the sovereign, which is the energy of suppression. The ministers use improper governance to disrupt the sovereign's decrees.
Mist rises from the middle of the night and does not dissipate until noon, finally lingering as 'meng', indicating the ruler is unable to perceive his ministers, and the ministers will then carry out corrupt policies towards the people. If after noon it seems as if rain is about to come, it signifies the ministers are domineering and have no one to avoid. If the 'meng' mist shows the sun, it means a wicked person is deceiving the ruler, but there is still a remedy. As long as the government orders are clearly proclaimed and cautious appointment of respectful and trustworthy ministers is made, there will be no harm. If the mist does not dissipate all day, the ruler will have worries. If the mist is yellow, it indicates light rain; if white, it indicates military affairs and funerals; if green, it indicates an epidemic; if black, it indicates a great flood; if red, it indicates military defeat and drought. Yellow also indicates earth and wood construction or a great wind. If mist arises at night and a white rainbow appears, the ministers will have worries; if mist arises during the day and a white rainbow appears, the ruler will have worries. If the head of the rainbow curves down to the ground, it is a sign of bloodshed; if the white rainbow's energy appears, there will be military conflict that year.
Whenever the mist does not follow the four seasons and instead appears abnormally mixed, along with light winds and small rains, this is a sign of disorder in the yin and yang energies. From the hour of Yin to the hour of Chen, this phenomenon recurs cyclically, and those who act against the natural order will not achieve success. If this continues for several days without dispersing, with darkness throughout day and night, the country will be on the verge of collapse. If the mist gathers from all sides and there is also a rainbow appearing in a particular direction, a rainbow that follows the seasons is auspicious, while one that does not conform to the season is ominous. If the mist appears day or night, with alternating green and yellow colors, overlapping and obscuring each other, and fluctuating between gathering and dispersing, this indicates that ministers intend to plot against the sovereign. Those who conspire will not succeed and will ultimately perish. If the mist rises simultaneously from all four directions, and people cannot be seen even from a hundred paces away, this is called "daytime darkness." It will not result in the country's destruction, but there will certainly be a family's ruin. If the heavens and earth, as well as all four directions, become dark and hazy, as if dust is falling, and this lasts for more than ten days, or a month, or even just an hour, without wetting clothes but with a layer of dust falling, this is called "haze." Therefore, the old saying goes: when the sky and earth produce haze, the sovereign and ministers become estranged. If there is no great drought, there will certainly be an invasion from outside.
The sixth and fortyth chapter on the divination of different weather conditions in the nine lands.
The Records of the Grand Historian: The Book of Celestial Officials says: Those skilled in divining the prosperity and decline of things, when entering a country or a town, first observe whether its borders and fields are orderly and neat, and whether its city walls, houses, and gates are bright and prosperous. Then they look at the quality of carriages, horses, clothes, livestock, and local products. If they are rich and increasing, it is auspicious; if they are poor and decreasing, it is inauspicious. Thus, there is no thing in the world that does not have a certain appearance or aura. Therefore, accumulated wealth and goods, ancient ruins and wastelands, markets, prisons, and ancient battlefields all have their own auras. Now I will describe them in order. The mirage on the seaside forms the shape of towers and pavilions, and the mist over open plains condenses into the shape of palaces and buildings.

All methods of observing the clouds and their appearance: when the qi first appears, it is like clouds but not clouds, like mist but not mist, faint and indistinct, as if barely visible. When it first arises, it stands solemnly, floating above the tops of mulberry and elm trees, reaching a height of five or six feet, indicating events happening more than a thousand five hundred li away. When viewed straight ahead, it covers a distance of one thousand li; when looking upward, it reaches five hundred li; when looking straight up to the middle of the sky, it covers a distance of one hundred li. When looking along the area between mulberry and elm trees, the distance covered is two thousand li. When climbing a high mountain and looking in all directions until the horizon is reached, the distance covered is three thousand li. If one wishes to observe the qi of one's own army, it is usually done on the days of Jia, Ji, Gengzi, Wuwu, Wei, Hai, or on the eighteenth day of the eighth lunar month. One should walk ten li away from the military camp, ascend a high place, and look far away to see it. Then, one should follow the rules recorded in another book to make a divination. Any group of more than a hundred people will have qi. When divining disasters and anomalies, one must first calculate the nine palaces, their corresponding regions, and the days of the Six壬 (Rén) and the moon. If the phenomenon does not appear in the sky as clouds, mist, wind, or rain, then one may proceed with the divination.
When facing an enemy in battle, if there is a cloud very low in the sky drifting over, covering the ditches and covering the roads, this indicates a large force of enemies is definitely coming, with no time to eat even a meal, so one must quickly rise and be on high alert. If the enemy is in the east, observe at sunrise; if in the south, observe at noon; if in the west, observe at sunset; if in the north, observe at midnight. Any qi that appears in the colors of royal qi or ministerial qi is auspicious; any that appears in the colors of imprisoned qi or death qi is inauspicious. For qi above an army, the higher it is, the more superior; the thicker it is, the more superior; the more substantial it is, the more superior; the longer it is, the more superior; the more moist and nourishing it is, the more superior. Qi should rise vigorously like steam from a steamer, gathering into mist. Mist belongs to yin, and yin qi further condenses into phenomena such as rainbows, halos, and ear rings. If qi does not gather or condense, but merely disperses in one area, it cannot cause disaster; it must be mixed with a sharp, killing qi, appearing solemn and urgent, before it can be used for divination.
The atmosphere above the army is stable, so the army is stable; if the atmosphere is unstable, the army is also unstable. If the atmosphere moves south, the army moves south; if it moves north, the army moves north; if it moves east, the army moves east; if it moves west, the army moves west; if the atmosphere disperses, the army will scatter. Observing the cloud atmosphere is usually done in the early morning, evening, and at sunrise and sunset, by examining where the atmosphere appears. Within the predicted time of the event, if there is strong wind, heavy rain, or prolonged overcast weather, misfortune will not occur: because the wind disperses it, the clouds conceal it, and the rain dissipates it.

If the red and yellow qi in the shape of a箕 and broom emerge from the Taimei Palace, the Son of Heaven will reward beautiful women with money and goods. If the red and yellow qi enter the Taimei Palace, the Son of Heaven will reward the feudal princes with money. If red qi emerges from the Taimei Palace, there will be military affairs; another interpretation is that a new king will be established. If the red qi is round like a cup or bowl and flies out of the Taimei Palace, the Son of Heaven will reward the feudal princes with jade plates. If the red qi is straight and points to the left and right of the throne of the Son of Heaven in the Taimei Palace, the feudal lords will rebel. If yellow and white qi emerge from the Taimei Palace, a new king will be established. If yellow and white qi are mixed with red and black qi, forming shapes like a dragon, a snake, or a jiao, and appear on the gates and palaces of the Taimei Palace, there will be mourning ceremonies. If the qi forms a continuous ring around the Taimei Palace, it indicates warfare and death. All these qi are the qi of corrupt ministers and slanderers.
Yellow and white clouds arise from above the palace walls, shining like banners, indicating the sovereign will have joy and gain longevity. If there is a blue and white cloud emerging from the five emperors' seats and flying directly out from the southern star gate, the sovereign will lose his position within ninety days, and the world will become unstable. If red clouds emerge from the five emperors' seats and descend into the star of favored ministers, within sixty days there will be a plot by a close minister against the sovereign; if the cloud is not formed clearly, it indicates death and great chaos in the realm. If blue and white clouds emerge from the star of favored ministers and enter the five emperors' seats, it signifies a righteous official among the ministers will speak out and take military action (the same interpretation applies to the method of observing accumulated soldiers' stars). If the cloud is red above and white below, large as a well mouth, coming from outside and pressing upon the court of Taiwei, it indicates the qi of a wicked minister; if the shape of the cloud is straight, it indicates the qi of a high-ranking minister. If there are clouds in the Taiwei region shaped like flying birds, it signifies rebellious princes, someone coming to attack the Son of Heaven, and secret plots within the court.
Yellow qi rising from the star of the Crown Prince and entering the Five Emperors' Seat will result in the Crown Prince ascending the throne within no more than sixty days. Black qi reaching directly the Imperial Seat of the Taiwei Enclosure will cause the death of the ministers around the Imperial Seat. Pale and white qi entering the star of the officials will lead to a military revolt within the palace. Red qi emerging from the star of the officials indicates the use of many troops and distant military campaigns. Yellow and white qi moistening the earth and entering the star of the officials will result in the middle officials receiving rewards. Black qi entering the star of the officials will result in many deaths among the officials.
