Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

When the moon and the star of wood (the year star) are in the same mansion and an eclipse occurs, it indicates that the people will eat each other due to famine, grain prices will rise sharply, and the officials in charge of agriculture will be anxious. When the moon and the star of fire (Flame Star) are in the same mansion and an eclipse occurs, it signifies the collapse and destruction of the country, with worries and troubles. When the moon and the star of earth (Steadfast Star) are in the same mansion and an eclipse occurs, it indicates the country will perish due to famine. When the moon and the star of metal (Bright Star) are in the same mansion and an eclipse occurs, it suggests that although a strong country wins a battle, it will lose its cities, and the general will have two minds. When the moon and the star of water (Morning Star) are in the same mansion and an eclipse occurs, it indicates the country will be destroyed by rebellion led by women.

A lunar eclipse occurring in the two constellations of Jiao and Kang indicates that officials in charge of legal affairs will be demoted, military officers and officials will have worries, and the country's four gates will be closed. The region corresponding to these constellations will suffer misfortune. If the moon is eclipsed in the middle of the Kang constellation, the sovereign will have worries. If the moon is eclipsed in the middle of the Di constellation, which is the palace where the emperor rests, it indicates the emperor will be seriously ill and die, ministers will die, the empress will be troubled by this omen, and officials of all ranks will have worries. (The same interpretation applies to a solar eclipse in the Di constellation.) If the moon is eclipsed in the Fang constellation, which is the bright hall where the emperor governs, it indicates the sovereign will have worries, the government will be confused, ministers will seize control of the court, and there will be illness. (The same interpretation applies to a solar eclipse in the Fang constellation.) If the moon is eclipsed in the Xin constellation, which contains the stars representing the heavenly king, the crown prince, and the younger sons, it indicates the sovereign will be troubled by this omen, the crown prince, the younger sons, and the three dukes will have worries.

When the moon is eclipsed in the Tail mansion and the Winnowing Basket mansion, the Tail mansion has nine stars and presides over the imperial harem and concubines, so it indicates that someone from the king's family will be punished. Alternatively, the palace attendants' concubines may be guilty, the empress will have worries, and the person in charge of the chariots will be demoted. When the moon is eclipsed in the Winnowing Basket mansion, the mansion is associated with wind and speech, so it indicates the mobilization of chariots and cavalry. When the moon is eclipsed in the Southern Dipper, the Dipper governs rank and honor, so it indicates that ministers and generals will have worries, or there may be famine and deaths. If the sun is eclipsed in the Dipper, the interpretation is of military unrest, and the rest are similar. When the moon is eclipsed in the Ox mansion, it indicates that there will be rebellion in the country. If the sun is eclipsed in the Ox mansion, the interpretation is the same. When the moon is eclipsed in the Female Mansion, the Female Mansion governs silk and textile work, so it indicates that the female ruler of the state will have worries, and the textile industry across the land will decline. When the moon is eclipsed in the Emptiness mansion, the Emptiness mansion presides over mourning in the court, so it indicates that the state will have the death of its ruler and a change in mourning attire throughout the land.

When the moon is eclipsed in the constellation Wēi Sù, which governs matters of tombs and building houses, if it is not a mourning event due to the death of the sovereign, there must be the death of a high official, leading to a change in mourning attire, and officials who handle swords and weapons will have worries, while those who manage clothing, shoes, gold, and jade may be demoted. When the moon is eclipsed in Yíng Shì, which governs palaces and military provisions, it indicates a shortage of food for soldiers. When the moon is eclipsed in Dōng Bì, which governs literature and documents, it suggests damage to the principle of yīn and yáng, leading to failure in nurturing and growth, with accusations of blame, the killing of high officials, and the arrest of those who manage documents and records. When the moon is eclipsed in Kuí Sù, which governs the collection of wealth, it indicates that officials responsible for gathering and managing finances will be dismissed. When the moon is eclipsed in Lóu Sù, which governs the imperial gardens and the harem, it suggests that the empress will have rebellious actions.

When the moon is eclipsed in the stomach mansion, since the stomach mansion represents the granary of heaven, it indicates that the royal court's food supply is greatly cut off. Another interpretation suggests that it signifies the loss of a general's army and the punishment of a minister responsible for transportation, as well as worries for the empress. When the moon is eclipsed in the hairy head mansion, which is called '旄头', it relates to punishments and northern troops, indicating the execution of high officials and the decline of noble women. (This is the same method of divination as when the moon is eclipsed in the twenty-eight mansions.) When the moon is eclipsed in the net mansion, which governs border troops, it indicates danger for envoys sent to the border regions or the execution of officials from the border regions. When the moon is eclipsed in zī and cān, it signifies a drought and the execution of high ministers; it also indicates that ministers in charge of military power will be demoted. When the moon is eclipsed in the well mansion, which governs water affairs, it indicates worries for officials in charge of water control and those in charge of the five ancestral temples, the execution of high officials, unease for the empress, and failure in the harvest of five grains.

When the moon is eclipsed in the Ghost mansion, the Ghost mansion governs sacrifices and funerals, so it indicates the nobleman loses power, ministers have worries, and the country is not at peace. When the moon is eclipsed in the Willow mansion, the Willow mansion governs grasses, woods, and food, so it indicates ministers have worries and are demoted. When the moon is eclipsed in the Seven Stars, the Seven Stars are located in the southern direction, the position of pure yang, but the moon is the Taiyin, so when the position of pure yang is weakened by Taiyin, it indicates the empress and important ministers are suddenly executed, and there is great famine in the country. When the moon is eclipsed in the Extended Net mansion, it indicates the nobleman loses power and the empress has worries, which is the same as the divination for the moon being eclipsed in the Ghost mansion. When the moon is eclipsed in the Wings mansion, the Wings mansion governs the music bureau and distant travelers, so it indicates loyal ministers are slandered and virtuous people perish. (This is the same as the divination for the moon being eclipsed in the twenty-eight mansions.) When the moon is eclipsed in the Chariot mansion, the Chariot mansion governs chariots and cavalry, so it indicates important ministers die and the empress is uneasy. (This is the same as the divination for a solar eclipse in the Chariot mansion, and also the same as the divination for the moon being eclipsed in the twenty-eight mansions.)

The divination text explains that when the moon invades the stars and causes an eclipse, it signifies certain events. The six stars of Jian are located north of the Southern Dipper, which is the gate of heaven. If the moon is eclipsed among the Jian stars, it indicates that among the queen consorts and their maidens, there will be someone who should be demoted. The Taiwei Enclosure is the court of the Son of Heaven. If the moon enters the Taiwei Enclosure or if there are shooting stars crossing through the Taiwei Enclosure, it indicates the ruler is weak and the ministers are powerful, the princes and the armies of the four barbarian tribes are not properly controlled, acting improperly and with improper intentions. Improper intentions lead to evil thoughts and desires, unwillingness to accept the imperial orders, and there are villains within the court. The four barbarian tribes are hard to trust. If the moon repeatedly enters the Taiwei Enclosure, it indicates a death. According to the "Book of the Later Han, Astronomical Records," in the fifth month of the fifth year of Emperor Mu of Jin, on the day of Renyin, the moon invaded the Taiwei Enclosure, and the emperor died that month. In the fourteenth year of Emperor An of Jin, in the fifth month of the year, on the day of Gengzi, the moon again invaded the Taiwei Enclosure, and on the day of Dingsi in the ninth month, the moon entered the Taiwei Enclosure again. In the twelfth month of that year, Emperor An died.

The Taiwei Enclosure has eastern and western gates. When the moon emerges from the eastern gate, it signifies that the prime minister receives a mandate; when it emerges from the southeast, it indicates the ruler will show virtue. When the moon emerges from the western gate, it signifies that generals receive a mandate; when it emerges from the southwest, it indicates there will be punishments and executions. The "Zhi" in the Yu Gui mansion refers to the Accumulated Corpse Qi, which specifically governs death and mourning. If the moon invades the Ghost Mansion, it indicates the ruler of a state will have worries, and high officials will be executed. (In the second year of Wei Jiaping, the month of October, the moon invaded the Yu Gui mansion; in the third year of Wei Jiaping, the fifth month, Wang Ling and Prince Chu Cao Biao were executed.) Whenever the moon invades the钺 star or attacks the锧 star, it indicates the use of axes and swords will be imminent. If the moon attacks the Heavenly Corpse (which refers to the Accumulated Corpse Qi in the Yu Gui mansion, or alternatively the Hairy Head mansion), it indicates there will be a traitor within the court. (In the second year of Jin Yixing, the second month on the Jiazi day, the moon invaded the Hairy Head mansion; in the ninth month on the Renyin day, the Xianbei were destroyed.)

The starHairy Head mansion is called 「旄头」, and it is the star of the Hu people, governing punishment, military campaigns on the borders. If the moon moves and invadesHairy Head mansion, and if there is red and white cloud around the northern part of the moon, it indicates that the Chinese army will go into the land of the Hu people and gain territory. If the moon attacksHairy Head mansion, it signifies severe punishments throughout the land, great floods covering the fields, and failure to harvest grain. If the moon touchesHairy Head mansion, it indicates that the Hu people will suffer from military calamities. If the moon invadesHairy Head mansion, it signifies that the princes will be demoted, and there will be disturbances within the palace. If the moon entersHairy Head mansion, it indicates the issuance of an amnesty.

The Yisi Divination Treatise, Volume Third

Divination by Celestial and Terrestrial Elements, Fifteenth Section

Carefully examined: In the heavens, the twenty-eight constellations are divided into twelve star sections; on earth, the twelve earthly branches correspond to twelve feudal states. As for the divisions of the nine provinces, each has its own associated regions. The heavens and the earth correspond with each other, so one can use this to predict and discern auspicious and inauspicious events. The names of states, commanderies, countries, and towns mentioned in the text are all based on the divisions established by Liu Xiang, recorded in the "Book of Han: Geography Section." These boundaries overlap with each other, and the terrain varies in width and narrowness, and there are often places where they do not fully align. This is mostly because after the Spring and Autumn period, the Warring States each ruled independently, and they used the names of places and states at that time to assign them. The degrees of the star sections also vary, entering and exiting. The accounts in various schools of classic texts differ, making it impossible to determine their origins. Investigating the names of the states of the Warring States, the names used by the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties were the same, and the terrain did not change, but the people and their affairs frequently moved. From ancient times to the present, the titles of feudal lords have been passed down through generations, and they are connected upwards to the celestial regions, and this has remained unchanged. Since the Qin dynasty burned the bamboo slips and scrolls, the historical records were incomplete, and although there are occasional fragments left, there is no complete basis for the reasoning. Even if one wished to determine them, how could one not leave doubts and gaps?

Only the "Classic of the Twenty-Eight Star Mansions and Mountains" records the locations of each star mansion and the corresponding mountains, assigning them to the territories of different states. If a star mansion changes, its effect is manifested in the corresponding mountain; since the territories differ, the mountain also responds to the celestial phenomena. Moreover, the stars of a particular mansion usually reside above the mountain, observing human affairs from above. There is an interaction between heaven and earth, thus forming the principle of heavenly warnings to mankind. Some people doubt this view, thinking it not accurate, and therefore use the old story of Zhang Hua obtaining a sword as an example. Once Zhang Hua saw an unusual aura between the stars Dou and Niu, and he knew it was the spirit of a divine sword. He then searched the earth according to the territory corresponding to that star mansion and indeed found the treasure sword. A sword is merely a weapon, yet it can correspond to the heavens and manifest celestial phenomena. How much more so then the spirits of people and the accumulated energies of mountains and rivers, whose nature and principles are far more significant than a sword? Now I will list the ancient twelve star mansions' state names and their star positions below, as a summary of the concept of territories. As for the differences in the records of star mansions and their degrees by various schools, they will be discussed separately and recorded in the "Chronicle of Calendars and Celestial Phenomena."

The constellations Jiao and Kang are the celestial regions corresponding to the State of Zheng. From the twelve degrees of ChChariot mansion to the fourth degree of Root mansion, this corresponds to the position of the celestial stem Chen in the twelve earthly branches, and the name of this star division is called "Shou Xing" (Longevity Star). In the third month, when all things begin to take shape on the earth, the spring energy spreads and nurtures them, allowing each to fulfill its nature without premature death, hence it is called Shou Xing. ("Shou Xing" refers to Jiao and Kang, according to the "Erya." The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" states that Jiao, Kang, and Di correspond to Yanzhou.) This celestial region corresponds to the modern Nanyang Commandery (established during the Qin dynasty), as well as Dingle, Xiangcheng, Yingshang, Yingsheng, Changshe, Yinze, Jia, and Yun (a total of eight counties. Yingshui Commandery was established during the Qin dynasty). To the east it borders Ruzhuan, to the west it borders Hongnong, and it also includes Xin'an and Yiyin (two counties belonging to Hongnong Commandery, established during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han). These are all the celestial regions corresponding to the State of Han.

The Records of the Grand Historian: The Han Family states that the Han family is a descendant of the royal house of the Zhou dynasty, bearing the surname Ji. Han Wuzi served in the state of Jin and was granted the territory of Han. His great-great-grandson, Han Xianzi, took the surname Han and resided in Pingyang. Xianzi's son, Han Xuanzi, moved his residence to the state of Zhou. Xuanzi's great-great-grandson, Han Kangzi, together with the House of Zhao and the House of Wei, destroyed Zhibi and divided his territory. Kangzi's fifth-generation descendant, Han Ai Hou, conquered the state of Zheng and established his capital in Zheng, continuing for a total of twenty-one generations. The Odes of the Book of Songs, in its folk songs, mention the states of Chen and Zheng, which share the same constellation as Han. The Records of the Grand Historian: The Chen Family states that the state of Chen was originally the ancient capital of the Taihao Fuxi. When King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang dynasty, he also sought out the descendants of Yu the Great, finding Gui Man, and granted him the territory of Chen to preserve the worship of Yu the Great, who was known as Hu Gong. From Hu Gong to Wei Hou, there were twenty-three generations, until the state was destroyed by the state of Chu. The Odes say, "Kan its drumbeats," referring to the area around Huaiyang, which is the region of Chen County.

The state of Zheng, which is now Xinzheng in Henan Province (Xinzheng is a county belonging to the former Henan Commandery; during the Qin dynasty it was part of the Sanchuan Commandery, and during the reign of Han Gaozu it was renamed the Henan Commandery), was originally the ancient capital of Zhurong, the fire official of the Xia dynasty's Gaoxin emperor. Chongli also once served as the fire official under Emperor Kusu. This area had two counties. Adding Chenggao and Xingyang, as well as Songyang and Yangcheng in Yingshui, all these places were within the territory associated with Zheng. The "Records of the Grand Historian: The Annals of Zheng" states that in the twenty-second year of King Xuan of Zhou's reign, the younger brother You was enfeoffed in Zheng, who became the Duke Huan of Zheng, and he resided in Chenggao of the Guo state. Later, after the Qianrong tribe assassinated King Xuan, Duke Wu of Zheng moved to between Zhen and Wei rivers, and after twenty-two generations, the state was eventually destroyed by the state of Han. The territory of Zheng belonged to the Yan Commandery. ("The Book of Documents: Yu Gong" states that between the Ji River and the Yellow River lies the Yan Commandery. "The Rites of Zhou" says that east of the Yellow River is called the Yan Commandery. "Erya" says that between the Ji River and the Yellow River is called the Yan Commandery, extending from the east of the Yellow River to the Ji River. "Weiyang's Celestial Regions" says that starting from Yingshui, Zheng's territory extends south to Liangshan and east to Longshan, all belonging to Yingshui.)

The three mansions of Di, Fang, and Xin are the celestial regions corresponding to the State of Song. From the fifth degree of Di mansion to the ninth degree of Wei mansion, this corresponds to the position of the卯 (Mao) in the twelve earthly branches, and the star sequence is called "Big Fire." The Mao position belongs to the Wood of the East, and the Heart Star is located at the Mao position. Fire resides in the center of Wood, hence it is called Big Fire. (The Er Ya says: Big Fire is also called Chen; the term "Big Chen" refers to the three mansions of Fang, Xin, and Wei. The Shi Ji Tian Gao Shu says: Fang and Xin correspond to Yu State. The Shi Yu says: Participating with Chen is also called Can Shang, referring to Can mansion and Xin star. This has already been explained in the annotations on the stars of the Wei dynasty.)

The regions corresponding to the three stars of the constellation Dou, Fang, and Xin are associated with the state of Song. Geographically, these areas include present-day Pei and Liang (this area was known as the Dang State during the Qin dynasty and was renamed Liang State by Han Gaozu), the territory of Chu (the state of Chu was established by Han Gaozu and later changed to Pengcheng State during the reign of Han Xuan帝), Shanyang State (established by Han Jingdi by dividing the territory of Liang State), Dongping (established by Han Jingdi by dividing the territory of Liang State as Qi Dong State, later renamed Dongping State by Han Xuan帝), Jiyang (established by Han Jingdi by dividing the territory of Liang State as Jiyang State), and the two counties of Xuchang and Shouzhang in Dongjun (Shouzhang was originally named Shoulang, but was renamed Shouzhang by Han Guangwu帝 to avoid the taboo of his uncle's name). These areas all belong to the territory of the state of Song. King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed Weizi at Song, which is today's Suyang (Suyang County belongs to Liang State. King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed Weizi, the younger brother of King Zhou of Shang, at the state of Song, to continue the worship of the Shang dynasty). This area was originally the homeland of Yenbo, the fire official of the Taoyang clan (Yenbo was the eldest son of Gaoxin). Jiyin and Dingtao (Dingtao is a county belonging to Jiyin State. The state of Cao mentioned in the "Book of Songs" is located here; King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed his younger brother Zhenduo at Cao, which is now Dingtao County), all belong to the state of Yu. ("The Book of Documents: Yu Gong" says: between Jing Mountain and the Yellow River is Yu State. "The Rites of Zhou" says: south of the Yellow River is Yu State. "Erya" says: south of the Yellow River is Yu State; the commentary says: from Henan to the Han River. "Weiyang Fenyi" says: the state of Song was located in Xiacai and Huayin, from the southern mountain range of Heng to the area of Puli Water in Qi, Pei State, Jiyang, and Taixing, and the eastern sea; today this corresponds to the territory of Liang State.)

The two mansions of Wei and Ji are the celestial regions corresponding to Yan State. From the tenth degree of Wei to the eleventh degree of Dou, this corresponds to the position of Yin in the twelve earthly branches, and the star sequence is called "Ximi." Wei is the end of the eastern Wood mansion, while Dou is the beginning of the northern Water mansion. This star sequence lies between these two, separating Water and Wood, hence its name Ximi. ("Ximi" is also called "Jin" according to the "Erya," and the area between Ji and Dou is the crossing point of the Milky Way. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" states that Ji corresponds to Youzhou.) King Wu of Zhou, having defeated the Shang dynasty, granted Zhao Gong the territory of Yan. This lineage continued for thirty-six generations, ruling alongside the six dominant states of the Warring States period. (The king of Yan controlled the area around Yishui River.)

The territory of Yan State extended eastward to seven commanderies: Yuyang, Youbeiping, Liao Dong, Liao Xi, Shanggu, Daijun, and Yamen (all established during the Qin dynasty). To the south, it included eight counties: Yi, Rongcheng, Fanyang, Beixincheng, Guxian, Zhuo County, Liangxiang, and Xinchang (all under the commandery of Zhuo, also established during the Qin dynasty). Additionally, it encompassed the county of Anci in the commandery of Bohai (established by Emperor Gao of Han), and three commanderies in the northeast: Lelang, Xuantu, and Choson (all established during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han). All these areas were considered the territory of Yan, belonging to the region of Youzhou in the Nine Provinces. (The "Records of the Grand Historian: The Annals of Yan" states that during the Zhou dynasty, Youzhou was separated from Jiuzhou. The "Rites of Zhou" mentions that the northeastern region is called Youzhou. The "Erya" also refers to this area as Youzhou; the commentary explains that it extends from the Yi River to the northern lands of the Di people. "Fen Yi" states that Yan was governed from Jiuzhou, extending south to Jishi, east to the sea, and west to Hengshan; today it includes Shanggu, Yuyang, Youbeiping, Liao Dong, and further west to Zhuo commandery.)

The constellations Dou and Niu are the celestial regions corresponding to the states of Wu and Yue. From the 12th degree of Dou to the 7th degree of Nu, this spans the position of Chou in the twelve earthly branches, and the star sequence is called "Xing Ji" (Star Record). The term "Xing Ji" refers to its role in recording all things: Chou is the position of the twelfth month, where all things conclude and begin anew, hence it is called Xing Ji. (The "Er Ya" says: Xing Ji refers to the constellations Dou and Niu. The "Shi Ji · Tian Gao Shu" says: Dou corresponds to the areas of rivers and lakes, while Niu and Wu Nu correspond to Yang Zhou. Gao You's commentary on the "Lüshi Chunqiu" says: Dou corresponds to Wu, and Niu corresponds to Zhao.) This celestial region corresponds to the modern areas of Kuaiji, Jiangjiu (two commanderies established by the Qin dynasty), Danyang (originally Zhang commandery in the Qin dynasty, renamed Danyang by Emperor Wu of Han), Yu Zhang (established by Emperor Gao of Han), Lujiang (established by Emperor Wu of Han), Guangling and Liuan (Guangling was established from Jiangdu state by Emperor Wu of Han, and Liuan was established by dividing Hengshan territory), Linhuai (established by Emperor Wu of Han), all of which are the celestial regions of Wu.

The Records of the Grand Historian: The House of Wu says: Wu Tai Bo was the eldest son of King Tai Wang of the Zhou dynasty. He and his younger brother Zhong Yong gave up the throne to Ji Li, and fled to the region of Jingman. They cut their hair and tattooed their bodies, and the people of Jingman considered him virtuous, so they followed him and submitted to him. He called himself "Gouwu." When King Wu of Zhou conquered the Shang dynasty, he sought the descendants of Tai Bo and Zhong Yong, and found Zhong Yong's great-great-grandson Zhou Zhang, and enfeoffed him as the ruler of Wu. The present-day regions of Cangwu, Yulin, Hepu, Jiaozhi, Jiuzhen, Rizhan, and Nanhai are all within the territory of the Yue state. The Records of the Grand Historian: The House of Yue says: The ancestors of Yue were a庶son of Xia Hou Di Shao Kang, who was granted the territory of Huiji and was called Wuyu, to guard the worship of the great Yu. After passing through several generations, the state declined and became common people, and the worship of Yu was interrupted. More than a thousand years later, a child was born who could speak from birth, saying: I am the descendant of Wuyu. The people of Yue then revered him as their king, called him Wuyu Wang. Later, it passed down to Yunchang, and the state of Yue became prosperous again. Both Wu and Yue belonged to the region of Yangzhong. (The Book of Documents: Yu Gong says: The area between the Huai River and the East Sea is Yangzhong. The Rites of Zhou says: The southeast is called Yangzhong. The Er Ya says: The area south of the Yangtze River is called Yangzhong; the annotation says: from the Yangtze River to the South Sea. The Weiyang Division says: The land of Wu and Yue extends north to the Yangtze River, south to the Heng Mountains, east to the sea, and west to Dongting Lake.)

The female and empty mansions are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Qi. From the eighth degree of the female mansion to the fifteenth degree of the dangerous mansion, this corresponds to the position of the zodiac sign zi in the twelve earthly branches. The name of the star position is "Xuanxiao." Xuan means black, which is the color of the north; xiao means emptiness and depletion. In November, yang energy is hidden below, while yin energy rises above. All things are closed and dying, with no growth, and the heavens and earth appear empty, hence it is called Xuanxiao. (Xuanxiao is the eldest son of the Yellow Emperor. This place is the former capital of Zhuanxu. Zhuanxu is the grandson of the Yellow Emperor and the son of Changpu. The Er Ya says: Xuanxiao is the empty mansion, which is the former capital of Zhuanxu. The Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials says: the empty and dangerous mansions correspond to the state of Qingzhou.)

The territory of the state of Qi included the commanderies of Donglai (established by Han Gaozu), Langya (established by the Qin dynasty), GaoMi (formerly Jiaxi Kingdom, changed to GaoMi Kingdom by Han Wen帝), and Jiaodong; to the south were Zichuan (established by Han Gaozu) and Chengyang (established by Han Wen帝 by dividing the territory of Qi); to the north was Qiansheng (established as a fiefdom by Han Gaozu); and it also included areas south of Qinghe such as Bohai, Lecheng, Chonghe, and Yangxin; to the west were Jinan (established by Han Wen帝 by dividing the territory of Qi) and Pingyuan (established by Han Gaozu). All these commanderies and kingdoms were within the territory of Qi's domain. The Records of the Grand Historian: Annals of Qi states that Qi Taigong Lv Wang assisted King Wu of Zhou in defeating the Shang King Zhou. After the fall of Shang, King Wu granted Qi Taigong the territory of Qi. After King Wu's death and King Cheng's ascension to the throne, the Zhou dynasty set the borders of Qi to the east reaching the sea, to the west reaching the Yellow River, to the south reaching Muling, and to the north reaching Wudi, with Yingqiu as the capital. The territory of Qi belonged to the state of Qingzhou among the nine provinces. (The Book of Documents: Yu Gong states that between the East Sea and Mount Tai is Qingzhou. The Rites of Zhou states that the area to the 正东 is called Qingzhou. The Erya states that the area around the Ji River is called Yingshou; the commentary says that from Mount Tai to the East Sea is Qingzhou. The Weiyang Division of the Celestial Regions states that Qi was governed from Yingqiu, extending north to Yan territory, west to Jihe, south to Zisi, and east to the sea.)

The three stars of Wei, Shi, and Bi are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Wei. From the sixteen degrees of Wei to the four degrees of Kui, this corresponds to the亥 position in the twelve earthly branches, and the name of this star division is "Juzi." Juzi refers to the appearance of sighing. In the tenth lunar month, the yin energy begins to grow strong, while the yang energy retreats and is stored away, and all things lose the nurturing energy, hence it is said to be sorrowful and sighing, grieving for the absence of yang energy. (The "Er Ya" says: "Juzi" refers to the mouth of the star division, which is the constellation of Ying Shi and the eastern wall of Bi. Juzi was an ancient feudal lord, and Emperor Ku married a daughter of the Juzi clan, who gave birth to Zhi; Zhi was the elder brother of Emperor Yao. This star division is also called "Shiwei." Shiwei was the country of the Yu Long clan of the Xia dynasty, and also the place where the Duke of Tsai was granted his fief during the Spring and Autumn period. The "Zuo Zhuan" records that Changhong answered King Jing of Zhou, saying that in the year when the Duke of Tsai killed his own king, the planet Jupiter was in Shiwei. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" says: Ying Shi and the eastern wall of Bi correspond to the Bingzhou region.)

This division of territory corresponds to the present-day Dongjun (a commandery established during the Qin dynasty), Liyang, Henan (a commandery established by Han Gaozu. This area was originally the old state of the Shang dynasty. After the Zhou dynasty conquered the Shang, it divided the royal domain into three states, which were the states of Bei, Song, and Wei mentioned in the "Book of Songs" as the Guofeng. ) as well as Yiwang and Chaogeo, all belonging to the territory of the state of Wei. After the original territory of Wei was destroyed by the Di people, the Duke Wen of Wei was relocated to Chqu. Thirty years later, his son Chenggong moved to Diqu, which is today's Puyang. The territory of Wei belongs to the Bingzhou region. (The Zhou dynasty divided Jizhou into Bingzhou. The "Zhou Li" states: the northern direction is called Bingzhou. Bingzhou includes nine commanderies, yet all of them fall within the constellations of Yan, Zhao, and Qin. The reason for this is not fully understood. The "Weiyang Fenye" states: the state of Wei was located in Puyang, and its territory spanned three regions; it extended east to Pei, which is today's Dongjun.)

The two constellations of Kui and Lou correspond to the state of Lu. From the fifth degree of Kui to the sixth degree of Wei, this spans the戌 position among the twelve earthly branches, and the star division is called "Jiang Lou." "Jiang" means descending, and "Lou" means curling. Yin energy begins in the month of Wu, moving together with Yang energy; by the eighth month, Yang energy descends; by the ninth month, Yang energy wanes, and the hexagram "Bo" becomes dominant. Yang energy is about to be exhausted, Yin energy takes command, and all things wither and die, curling up and dying, hence it is called Jiang Lou. (The "Er Ya" says: Jiang Lou refers to Lou and Kui. The "Shi Ji·Tian Gao Shu" says: Kui, Lou, and Wei correspond to Xuzhou. The "Weiyang Fen Yi" says: The star division of Lu corresponds to the two constellations of Kui and Lou.)

The territory of Lu extended east to the East Sea (a commandery established by Han Gaozu), west to the Si River (i.e., the State of Si, established by Han Wudi by dividing the Eastern Commandery), south to the Huai River, and also included the areas of Xia Su, Ling, Tong, and Qu Lu in Lower Suili of Linhuai, all of which belonged to Lu's territory. King Cheng of Zhou granted the former capital of Shao Hao, Qu Fu, to the son of Duke Zhou, Bo Qin, establishing him as the Duke of Lu and making him the principal heir to continue the worship of Duke Zhou. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Annals of Lu" states: After King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang dynasty, he granted his younger brother Duke Zhou Dan the former capital of Shao Hao. However, Duke Zhou remained in the capital to assist King Wu. After King Wu's death, King Cheng ordered Duke Zhou's son Bo Qin to take his father's place and reside in Lu, thus becoming the Duke of Lu. Lu belonged to the Xuzhou region. ("The Book of Yu: Yu's Tribute" states: The area east of the East Sea, Mount Tai, and the Huai River region belonged to Xuzhou. "Er Ya" states: The area east of the Ji River is called Xuzhou; the commentary says: From the Ji River eastward to the East Sea. The Zhou dynasty inherited the Shang dynasty and abolished Xuzhou, incorporating it into Qingzhou; Han Wudi later reestablished Xuzhou. "Weiyang Divination of the Celestial Regions" states: Lu extended east to the East Sea, west to Yingqiu, north to Dai territory, and south to the Huai River.)

The two mansions of Wei and Mao correspond to the state of Zhao. From the seventh degree of Wei mansion to the eleventh degree of Bi mansion, this spans the You position among the twelve earthly branches, and the star rank is called "Da Liang." Liang means strength. In August, the white dew begins to fall, and all things become firm, mature, and strong, hence it is called Da Liang. (The Er Ya says: Da Liang is the Mao mansion. The Shiji Tian Gao Shu says: Mao and Bi correspond to the Ji Zhou. The Huainanzi Tian Wen Xun says: Wei, Mao, and Bi correspond to the state of Wei. The Weiyang Fen Yi says: The star division of Zhao includes Zi and Shen mansions.)

The territory of the state of Zhao originally belonged to the state of Jin. Later, when Han, Zhao, and Wei divided Jin, the Zhao family established the state of Zhao. The Han dynasty's Emperor Gao established the state of Zhao with the commandery of Handan. The territory of Zhao extended to the north, including Xindu (a vassal state established by Emperor Gao), Zhen Ding (a vassal state established by Emperor Wu), Changshan (a commandery established by Emperor Gao, originally named Hengshan, but renamed Changshan to avoid the name of Emperor Wen), and Zhongshan (originally a commandery, later changed to a vassal state by Emperor Jing). It also included three counties of Gaoyang, Jinxiang, and others in Zhuo commandery (established by Emperor Gao). To the east, it included Guangping (a vassal state established by Emperor Wu), Jilu (a commandery established by the Qin dynasty), Qinghe (a commandery established by Emperor Gao), and Hejian (a vassal state established by Emperor Wen by dividing Zhao). It also included six counties of Dongpingshu, Zhongwuyi, Wengan, Lai Zhou, Cheng, and Zhangwu in the commandery of Bohai (all established by Emperor Gao), all of which were located north of the Yellow River. To the south, it reached the river called Fu Shui (which is the Zhang River), and included Fanyang, Neihuang, and Xichu (three counties belonging to Wei Jun, established by Emperor Gao). To the west, it included Taiyuan (a commandery established by the Qin dynasty), Dinxia (a commandery established by Emperor Gao), Yunzhong (a commandery established by the Qin dynasty), Wuyuan (originally named Jiuyuan during the Qin dynasty, renamed Wuyuan by Emperor Wu), Shuofang (established by Emperor Wu), and Shangtang (a commandery established by the Qin dynasty). All these commanderies and counties were within the territory corresponding to the constellations Wei and Mao, which were the regions associated with the state of Zhao.

Shangdang was originally a separate commandery of the State of Han. Because it was far from Han and close to Zhao, it eventually submitted to Zhao, which then took possession of the entire area. After the establishment of the Zhao state, it passed through nine generations before becoming a marquisate. The fourth generation, Jing Hou, moved the capital to Handan. After that, three generations produced King Wuling. Then, after five more generations, it was destroyed by the State of Qin. The "Records of the Grand Historian: The House of Zhao" says that the ancestors of the Zhao family were descendants of the Emperor Zhuanxu and descendants of Boyi. Emperor Yu Shun once married two daughters of the Yao clan to his family and bestowed upon them the surname Ying. Through the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, they were always marquises. Later, Zao Fu drove the chariot for King Mu of Zhou, who went west for a tour of inspection, met the Western Queen Mother, and became so delighted that he forgot to return. At this time, Xu Yanshou rebelled, and King Mu of Zhou rode a thousand miles in one day, returned to attack Xu Yanshou, defeated his army, and then granted the city of Zhao to Zao Fu. Thus the name Zhao came into being. The state of Zhao belonged to the commandery of Ji Zhou. ("The Book of Documents: Yu Gong" says that Ji Zhou began from the Hukou and worked on the governance of Liang Mountain and Qishan. "The Rites of Zhou" says that the area within the Yellow River is called Ji Zhou. "Erya" says that the area between the two rivers is called Ji Zhou; the commentary says that it is from the eastern river to the western river. "Weiyang Fenye" says that the state of Zhao was governed from Handan, extending north to Changshan, Dajun, and Hejian.)

The three constellations of Bi, Zi, and Shen are the celestial regions corresponding to the states of Jin and Wei. From the twelve degrees of Bi to the fifteen degrees of Jing, this corresponds to the position of Shen in the twelve earthly branches, and the name of this star division is "Shi Shen." This refers to the time of July when all things reach their peak of growth, and the heavy yin energy descends, causing things to bear fruit, hence the name Shi Shen. (There were two sons of the Emperor Gaoxin, the elder named Yanbo and the younger named Shi Shen, who were not harmonious. Later, Emperor Kuo thought they were not virtuous and moved Yanbo to Shangqiu, where he became the chief worshipper of the star Xinxiu (Heart Mansion), and the Shang people continued this tradition, so Xinxiu came to be called the Shang star. Shi Shen was moved to Daxia, where he became the chief worshipper of Shen, and the people of the state of Tang continued this tradition, so Shen came to be called the Tang star. Later, King Wu of Zhou was inspired by a divine dream and had his son Shuyu. During King Cheng's reign, the state of Tang rebelled, and King Wu of Zhou destroyed it. King Cheng, in a joking manner, granted Shuyu the territory of Tang, which was a region east of the Yellow River and Fen River, covering an area of a hundred li in all directions, which is now the Jinyang County of the Taiyuan Prefecture. After Shuyu's death, his son Xie succeeded him, becoming the Duke of Jin, so Shen became the celestial region corresponding to Jin. Shi Shen is the deity of Shen, and thus the star division is named Shi Shen. Later, when King Wu of Wei rose to power, the states of Zhao and Han destroyed Jin and divided its territory, so Shen became the celestial region corresponding to Wei. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials" states: "Zi and Shen correspond to Yizhou." The "Huainanzi: Astronomical Discourse" states: "Zi and Shen correspond to Zhao." Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Bao Zhangshi" section of the "Rites of Zhou" says: "Shi Shen corresponds to Jin." The "Weiyang Celestial Regions" states: "The celestial regions of Jin and Wei correspond to the constellations of Wei, Mao, and Bi.")

From the county of Gao Ling (a county under the jurisdiction of Zuo Fengyi), heading east all the way to Hedong (a commandery established during the Qin dynasty) and Hen内 (a commandery established by Han Gaozu), to the south there are Chenliu (a commandery established during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han), Junnan's Junling and Xinji (established during the Qin dynasty), as well as Xihua and Changping, and in Yingshui's Wuyang, Yan, Xu, and Yancheng, and in Henan's Kaifeng, Zhongmu, Yangwu, Suanzhao, and Juan (the county of Suanzhao originally belonged to Chen State, but it is repeated here), plus two more places that are missing in the original text: all these places are within the territory corresponding to the state of Wei.

The Records of the Grand Historian: The Wei Family says: The ancestors of the state of Wei were descendants of Bi Gao, and shared the same surname as the royal family of the Zhou dynasty. After King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang king Zhou, he granted Bi Gao the territory of Bi, so the family took the surname Bi. The territory was located in the northwest of Chang'an county. Later, the family's title was abolished, and its descendants became commoners, some staying in the Central Plains and others migrating to the regions of the barbarians. Later, the descendants of Bi were again granted the title of Bi Wan, who served Duke Jin Xian Gong. In the sixteenth year of Duke Jin Xian Gong's reign, Zhao Su drove the chariot for Duke Jin Xian Gong, and Bi Wan was the charioteer on the right, attacking the three states of Huo, Geng, and Wei, and defeating them. Duke Jin Xian Gong then granted the territory of Wei to Bi Wan. The territory of Wei was today's He Dong Jun, that is, He Bei County. Bi Wan's grandson, Dao Zi, moved the capital to Huo, which is today's Yong An County of Ping Yang Jun; Dao Zi's son, Zhao Zi, moved the capital to An Yi, which is today's An Yi County of He Dong Jun. Zhao Zi's grandson, Xian Zi, together with the families of Zhao and Han, destroyed the Qi family and the Yang She family, and took over their territories. Xian Zi's great-grandson, Huan Zi, together with Zhao Xiang Zi and Han Kang Zi, destroyed the Zhi Bo family, and divided its territories. Huan Zi's grandson, Chen Wen Hou, was the time when the state of Wei was the most powerful. In the twenty-second year of King Wei Lie Wang's reign, the state of Wei was granted the status of a feudal state. His son, Wu Hou, ruled for eleven years, and together with the families of Zhao and Han, destroyed the state of Jin, and divided its territories. Therefore, the star region of Wei is the region of Shen, which belongs to Yizhou. (Han Wu Di changed Liangzhou to Yizhou, which was not the territory of Wei. The territory of Yizhou was entirely within the star regions of Qin and Chu, so assigning Wei to Yizhou, the intention is not clear. The "Weiyang Star Regions" says: The state of Jin was located in Taiyuan, and later Wei extended from Bazhou to Dingxiang Qinghe River, which today is the area of He Nei, Shangdang, and Yunzhong.)

The constellations of Jing and Gui are the territories corresponding to the state of Qin. From the 16th degree of Jing to the 8th degree of Liu, this corresponds to the position of Wei in the twelve earthly branches, and the name of this star division is "Chunshou." The seven constellations of the Vermilion Bird in the south resemble a bird, with Dongjing as its head and Liu as its mouth. This is exactly the head of the chun bird, hence it is called Chunshou. (Chunshou is the name of the star division; Jing, Gui, and Liu are the constellations in the head of the Vermilion Bird, hence called Chunshou. The Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials says that Dongjing corresponds to Yugu, which is the state of Yongzhou, that is, the area west of Hongnong old pass. The old pass refers to Hangu Pass; Hongnong commandery was established by Emperor Wu of Han.) The territory under this division includes Jingzhao, Fufeng, and Fengyi (originally all belonged to Qin's Inner Administration, divided into three auxiliary regions by Emperor Wu of Han), Beidi and Shangjun (these two commanderies were established by the Qin dynasty), Xihexi, An Ding, and Tianshui (these three commanderies were established by Emperor Wu of Han); to the south there are Bajun and Shujun (both established by the Qin dynasty), Guanghan (established by Han Gaozu), Jianwei (established by Emperor Wu of Han), and Wudu; to the west there are Jincheng and Wudi (originally established on the site of the former Xutu King's territory), Jiushui, and Dunhuang (Dunhuang originally belonged to Jiushui, and was separated and established by Emperor Wu of Han); further southwest there are Yanghe (established by Emperor Wu of Han), Yuexi, and Yizhou, all of which belong to this division (these three commanderies were established by Emperor Wu of Han through expansion): all these commanderies and states are within the territory corresponding to the state of Qin.

The Records of the Grand Historian: The Qin Family says that the ancestor of the Qin state was named Fizi, who shared the same surname as the Zhao family. He was the sixteenth descendant of Boyi. He raised horses for King Zhao of the Zhou dynasty, and the horses multiplied greatly. King Zhao granted him the status of a minor feudal lord and gave him the territory of Qin as his fiefdom, and he was called Qin Ying. This was the place of Qinting in today's Tianshui Longxi County, which is exactly that area. The great-grandson of Qin Ying was named Qin Zhong. King Xuan of the Zhou dynasty sent him to attack the Western Rong tribes, but he was killed by them. Later, King Xuan ordered Qin Zhong's son, Zhenggong, and his four younger brothers to attack the Western Rong tribes. They defeated the Western Rong tribes and were given the land of Datuo. They then settled in Qianqiu, which is today's Huaili County in Bofeng Prefecture. The state of Qin belonged to the Yongzhou region. (The Classic of Yao: Between the Black Water and the Western River lies Yongzhou. The Book of Rites says: The western part is called Yongzhou, and during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty, it was renamed Liangzhou. The Classic of Mountains and Seas says: The area west of the Yellow River is called Yongzhou; the commentary says: from the western river to the Black Water. The Unfinished Divisions say: The state of Qin originally ruled over Yongzhou, then over Yiyang, then over Xianyang, and today it is Chang'an. This area extends from Mount Hua to the western desert, which today includes the Three Auxiliary Regions, as well as Ba, Shu, Hanzhong, Longxi, Beidi, and Shangjun.)

Willow, the Seven Stars, and Zhang are the three constellations of the southern region. From the ninth degree of the Willow mansion to the sixteenth degree of the Zhang mansion, this corresponds to the position of the hour Yang in the twelve earthly branches, and the star sequence is called "Chun Fire." The south is associated with fire, meaning that in May the yang energy begins to grow strong, and the red star appears in the southern sky at dusk, located in the area of the Seven Stars and the Vermilion Bird, hence it is called Chun Fire. (The Er Ya says: Willow is the same as Chun Fire. Willow, the Seven Stars, and Zhang are the central constellations of the south, hence they are called Fire. The Zhou Li says: banners with birds painted on them and seven streamers hanging from them are used to symbolize Chun Fire. The Shi Ji Tian Gao Shu says: Willow, the Seven Stars, and Zhang correspond to the three rivers.) These are today's seven counties in Henan province: Luoyang, Gucheng, Pingyin, Yanshi, Gongxian, and Goushi (all belonging to the Henan commandery), which are the territories corresponding to the Zhou dynasty.

The Records of the Grand Historian, the Annals of the Zhou Dynasty, says: The ancestors of the Zhou dynasty were named Qi. When Qi was born, there were miraculous signs. As he grew up, he loved agriculture and cultivated various grains for the emperor Yu and Shun. Shun enfeoffed him in the area of Bin, which is now the Li County of Fu Feng, and he was called Hou Ji, bearing the surname Ji. His great-great-grandson Gong Liu and Gong Liu's son Qingjie established a state in Bin, which is now the Qi County of Fu Feng. Later, the tenth-generation descendant was called Tai Wang. He was disturbed by the Di people, so he moved away from Bin, crossed the Pi Water and Ju Water, and climbed the Liang Mountain, establishing a city in the area of Qi Mountain, which is now the Meiyang of Fu Feng. Tai Wang's grandson, King Wen, had a sage-like virtue, and the Zhou dynasty was about to flourish. He moved the capital to Feng, which is in the Du County of Jingzhao. King Wen's son, King Wu, destroyed the Shang dynasty and moved the capital to Hao, which is in the Chang'an County of Jingzhao. King Wu's son, King Cheng, built Luoyi and established the capital in Henan. Some people say King Cheng lived in Luoyi, and his sixth-generation descendant, King Yi, moved to Qianqiu. The territory of the Zhou dynasty included three rivers. (The three rivers refer to the three commanderies of Henan, Heinni, and Hedong. According to the Zhou dynasty's territory, only Henan was included, so it was called the state of Zhou. The territory of Zhou is called three rivers, which refers to this. The "Unyuan Division of the Sky" says: Luoyang extends west to the Hua Mountains, east to Xingze and Shaoshi Mountains, north to Henan, and south to the Han River. Today, this area is Henan and Chenliu.)

The constellations Yi and Zhen are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Chu. From the seventeen degrees of Zhang Xu to the eleven degrees of Zhen Xu, this spans the position of the fourth earthly branch, which is Si. The star sequence is called "Chun Wei." Among the seven constellations of the Vermilion Bird in the southern quadrant, Zhen Xu is regarded as the bird's tail, hence this star sequence is named "Chun Wei." ("Chun Wei" is also called "Nan Tu" according to the "Rites of Zhou: Monthly Orders," and "Winged and Chariot" correspond to Jingzhou according to the "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials.") This celestial region corresponds to the modern regions of Nanjun (established by the Qin dynasty), Jiangling, Jiangxia (established by Han Gaozu), Lingling (a commandery established by Han Wudi), Guiyang, Wuling (two commanderies established by Han Gaozu), Changsha (originally a commandery of the Qin dynasty, later changed to a feudal state by Han Gaozu), Ji, Hanzhong (established by the Qin dynasty), and Ruzhou (established by Han Gaozu). All these areas are the celestial regions of the state of Chu.

During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, the former teacher of King Wen, Yu Xiong, was enfeoffed with his grandson Xiong Yi in the area of Jingman, and he was granted the title of Chu Zi. He resided in Danyang. After more than ten generations, it came to Xiong Tong, who proclaimed himself King Wu, and the state of Chu gradually became powerful. Five generations later, it reached King Zhuang, who led the feudal lords, stationed his troops at the border of the Zhou royal court to show strength, and annexed the land between the rivers Jiang and Han. Internally, he destroyed the states of Chen and Lu. After more than ten generations, Xiang Wang emerged. He moved the capital eastward to Chen. The "Records of the Grand Historian: The Family History of Chu" states that Yu Xiong was a descendant of Zhurong, of the Mi surname, living in Danyang, which is now Zhijiang County in southern Jun. King Wu's son, King Wen, began to build the capital at Ying, which is Jiangling. King Zhuang's grandson, King Zhao, was defeated by Wu, and Wu's troops attacked Ying. King Zhao fled to the state of Su, and sent the Chu official Shen Baoxu to seek help from the state of Qin. Qin then sent troops to rescue Chu, and defeated the Wu army in a great battle. Wu King Helu's younger brother Fu Ga returned to Wu and proclaimed himself king. Upon hearing this, Helu withdrew his troops, and King Zhao was able to return, and moved the capital to Ruo, which is now Ruo County in southern Jun. Chu belonged to Jingzhou. ("The Book of Documents: Yu Gong" states that from Jing Mountain to the south of Heng Mountain is Jingzhou. "The Rites of Zhou" states that the southern direction is called Jingzhou. "Erya" states that south of the Han River is called Jingzhou, from the south of the Han River to the north of Heng Mountain. "Weiyang Fenyi" states that Chu was ruled from Ying, extending south to the nine rivers, north to the accumulated waters, east to the sea, and west to Yu Fu Mountain; today this corresponds to Ruzhuan, Ruyang, Lujiang, Yuzhang, Changsha, and Nanhai, which were the former territories of Chu in southern Ying.")

The duties of the Great Master of the People in the Book of Rites state: using the method of measuring shadows with a gnomon to determine the names of the twelve soils, in order to examine the dwellings of the people and understand their benefits and harms. (Zheng Xuan said: the twelve soils are the territories of the twelve states, connected above to the twelve star divisions.) The Book of Preserving the Celestial Signs says: using the celestial phenomena to distinguish the nine provinces, each territory that is granted has its own assigned star, to observe omens of calamity or auspicious signs. (Ma Rong said: the so-called stars are the soils, that is, the regions under the jurisdiction of the stars. The Book of Land says: the Dipper mansion governs the land of Jin, and the Star of Shang governs the division of the Great Fire. '辩' means to distinguish, '封' means boundary, and '封域' refers to the territory of a state. The assigned stars start from the twelve degrees of the Dipper mansion, called the division of the Star Chronicle and the territory of Wu-Yue, and this is the kind of thing.) The person in charge of the Reckoning of the Celestial Officials manages the twelve years, twelve months, twelve earthly branches, and the positions of the twenty-eight mansions, distinguishing and arranging these matters, to coordinate with the heavenly position. (The so-called position refers to the position of the Master of the Year, that is, the month when the planet of the year and the sun and moon are together, as well as the position indicated by the handle of the Big Dipper.)

The "Poetic Prophecy: Push and Measure of Calamity" records the celestial regions of the various states as follows: The state of Bei, belongs to the mansion of Jieyu (Song Jun explains: referring to Yingshi star). The state of Yong, belongs to the mansion of Tianhan (i.e., Tianjin star). The state of Wei, the celestial mansion is in Dou and Heng (this refers to the suitable celestial mansion for each state). The state of Wangji, the celestial mansion is in Ji and Dou. The state of Zheng, the celestial mansion is in Dou and Heng. The state of Wei, the celestial mansion is in QianNiu. The state of Tang, the celestial mansion is in Kui and Lou. The state of Qin, the celestial mansion belongs to the White Tiger, its energy originates from the Black Tortoise. The state of Chen, the celestial mansion is in DaJiao. The state of Hui, the celestial mansion is in Zhaoyao. The state of Cao, the celestial mansion is in Zhang Xu mansion and Hu star. The above is the celestial regions of the various states recorded in the "Poetic Prophecy," which differs from the accounts in works such as the "Huainanzi."

The Tian Gao Shu also says that the twenty-eight mansions govern the twelve states, while the Big Dipper presides over them and oversees all the states. This idea has existed for a long time. The state of Qin had its guiding star as Tai Bai, verified by the star of the Wolf and the Bow and Arrow; the states of Wu and Chu had their guiding star as the planet of Mars, verified by the star of the Balance; the states of Yan and Qi had their guiding star as the planet of Jupiter, verified by the mansions of Emptiness and Tail; the states of Song and Zheng had their guiding star as the planet of Saturn, verified by the mansions of Room and Heart; and the state of Jin had its guiding star as the planet of Saturn, verified by the mansion of Three Stars. After Qin conquered the three Jin states, the method of divination changed: the area south of Hua Mountain and the Yellow River was considered China, verified by the southern part of the celestial street, governed by the mansion of Net; the northwest region, including the Hu, Mo, and Yuezhi, was verified by the northern part of the celestial street, governed by the mansion of Hairy Head.

The Huainanzi and the Shanhaijing both state: what the earth carries is everything within the six heavens and within the four seas; the sun and moon illuminate it, the stars mark its order, and the Tai sui controls it. (The twelve states divided by the Huainanzi correspond to the Shi school's star classic.) The Chunqiu Neishi says: in the heavens there are twelve star divisions, which are the paths traversed by the sun and moon; on the earth there are twelve regions, which are the places where kings and princes established their states.

The diagrams and prophecies in the谶纬 texts explain the correspondence between celestial phenomena and earthly features. The Yellow River Chart says that at the center of heaven there is the Pole Star, which is connected to the central part of the earth, the Kunlun Mountains. Yang energy is strong at the Si position, and in the east, the Five Deities of the Taiwei Celestial Court are established, with the harmonious jade also located at the Si position. Five thousand li southeast of Kunlun is called Shenzhou, where there is a map of the five mountains and earth spirits, separated by dangerous passes and strategic points, which is the place where emperors reside. Mount Taishan in the east is the root of the constellations Jiao, Kang, and Fang, corresponding to the heavenly gate and the Bright Hall. The narrow pass of Bin is connected to Fusu, the place where the Sun is arranged; the dangerous pass of Xuanlu is connected to Wuquan (or Yuquan), the place where the Moon rises. The narrow pass of A Ruán is connected to Yanggu, where the five stars are arranged; the strategic point of Fangyu is connected to Xianchi. The dangerous passes of Sihao are connected to Nüji. The pass of Jinxi is connected to Gouxing; the dangerous pass of Jingxing is connected to Kuishou. The dangerous pass of Gouju is connected to the Five Harmonies and Five Knots, forming the star of the capital; the narrow pass of Juyong is connected to the gate of the Purple Micro Palace. These are the nine important passes whose celestial spirits are clearly visible in the heavens.

The "Hanshu · Lüli Zhì" says: The so-called six things refer to years, seasons, days, months, stars, and constellations. "Chen" refers to the place where the sun and moon meet, and also the position pointed to by the handle of the Big Dipper. The Yu Heng and the Dipper's spoon are the key elements in establishing the celestial framework, and also the initial path of the sun and moon's movement in the star order. Therefore, the constellations Dou and Niu are located in the second position of the "Chou" (ox) branch, and are called "Ji" (record). They are connected downward to the earth, and their corresponding regions are in Wu and Yue. Fei Zhi, whose name was Changweng, was a person from Donglai, and served as the magistrate of Danfu during the Former Han dynasty. He was proficient in the "Zhou Yi" (I Ching), wrote a commentary called "Zhangju," and also authored a book on divination. However, his discussions on the principles of heaven and earth were often superficial. When it comes to the division of regions and counties, his views were largely similar to Liu Xiang (whose name was Zizheng). When discussing the star orders and their degrees, he said that the "Shou Xing" (Star of Longevity) order covered forty-two degrees, the "Da Huo" (Great Fire) order covered thirty-two degrees, and the other orders each covered thirty degrees. The reason for this uneven distribution was not fully understood.

Cai Yong's "Chapter on the Monthly Ordinances" says: The entire sky consists of 365 and 1/4 degrees, divided into twelve star divisions, which are the paths along which the sun and moon travel. On earth there are twelve regions corresponding to these divisions, which are the locations where kings and princes establish their states. Each star division covers thirty degrees and fourteen parts of thirty-two. When the sun reaches the beginning of a star division, it is called a "jié" (limit), and when it reaches the middle, it is called a "qì" (climate). Weiyang, whose origin is unknown, served as the military governor of Qiansheng during the reign of Emperor Huan of Han. He was skilled in the yin and yang principles and numerical calculations. In the second year of Yuanchusheng, he submitted a memorial discussing the affairs of the Taiyi Nine Palaces. The emperor issued an edict questioning him, but Weiyang could answer according to reason. The emperor ordered his responses to be presented to the Astronomer Royal and the memorial to be stored in the LanTai stone chamber. He was awarded one hundred jin of gold and promoted two ranks, being appointed as the governor of Hongnong. However, the regions he described were too brief to be fully understood, and the stars assigned to the states were largely consistent with the Shi school's star chronicle.

The "Book of Song · Records of Calendars" records that Dai Faxing, the Prince's Officer of the Traveling Banner, remarked: "Zu Chongzhi's calendar, which advocates the gradual accumulation of the precession of the equinoxes, would mean that the current position of the longevity star is now the position of the chunwei star from the Zhou dynasty. This is deceiving heaven and contradicting the earth, to such an extent." Zu Chongzhi replied: "The star positions are named according to their directions, and their meanings correspond with the constellations. Although the positions of the solstices and equinoxes have shifted, the positions of the star constellations remain unchanged. How could the constellation of the Blue Dragon or the Big Dipper move to the positions of the metal and water elements, causing a disorder in their names? This kind of absurd claim must be due to a lack of thorough investigation."

The "Tianwen Lu" says: dividing the sky into twelve star divisions is to identify the places of auspicious and inauspicious signs, and to clarify where omens are manifested. The "Zhou Li" used the method of the soil gnomon to determine the twelve regions, so the Fengxiang official was in charge of the positions of the four directions and the seven star constellations, to align with the heavenly positions; the Baozhang official distinguished the fields of the nine provinces, to differentiate between portents of calamity and auspiciousness. Therefore, wise kings observed celestial phenomena to establish teachings and regulations, and saw changes to cultivate virtue, so they could act before the time and the heavens would not contradict them, or act after the time and still follow the heavenly way. Since Chongli, there should have been writings on this subject, but the records were cut off, and later generations had no way to know about it. The current commonly accepted twelve divisions are written by the Han official Liang Xu, and Ban Gu included them in the "Han Shi," and all schools have regarded them as the fundamental source.

But Liu Xiang's words are brief, and scholars have many doubts. Therefore, they simply recorded his original text and added annotations, checking against the geography of the Han dynasty to compare differences and similarities. Basically, this is explaining the origin of the names of the star positions, the rise and fall of the feudal states, the relocation of capitals, and why certain commanderies and counties were inherited by particular families. As for the statement that heaven moves with yang energy and earth gathers with yin energy, changes occur above, and auspicious responses manifest below: the northern star is actually in charge of the lands of Wu and Yue, while the hour of Wu, which belongs to fire, is located in the territory of the Zhou dynasty. Moreover, the degrees in the sky are evenly arranged, yet the territories on earth differ greatly. A single star position may cover a distance of ten thousand li, spanning several states, or it may be confined within the royal domain, not exceeding a single commandery. However, the spiritual energy is connected from afar, like a shadow following its form or an echo responding to its sound. Therefore, this is not something that the unlearned can explain in detail.
