Tai Yin in the heavens is the Grand Censor and the Deputy Grand Censor, and some say she is the concubine Cai Nü of Tian Yi. In the Thunder Department, she serves as the deity of frost, snow, and ice. She is ranked second after the Nobleman. Her native branch is Xinyou, belonging to the Metal element. She is strong in the third month of autumn, and is a favorable general. When Tai Yin is in the Metal element, she is the younger daughter of the Western White Emperor, assisting in the imperial harem, occupying the position of a minister, and holding the power of severity and punishment. She appears dignified and imposing. When she is in a favorable position, she is upright and impartial, overseeing the institutions of remonstrance and law, and judging right and wrong throughout the world, thus representing integrity in human affairs. She embodies the energy of the Lesser Yin, and holds the position of concubine and secondary wife. When she is in an unfavorable position, she becomes a servant or concubine, becoming the master of thirty-six kinds of strange phenomena. Tai Yin prefers to be accompanied by Qinglong, Tai Chang, and Tianhou, and fears Zhuque, Teng Snake, and Tian Kong. She should not be placed in the positions of Mao, Wu, or Zi.

Tai Yin governs women, wealth, silver and gold, and also private matters, joy, and marriage. When Tai Yin acts abnormally and does evil, it indicates loss due to private matters, delays and failure in affairs, no news from afar, and prolonged illness. If Tai Yin is in a prosperous and strong state and is mutually generated by the day stem, it signifies joy and wealth related to women, or pregnancy and childbirth. If Tai Yin falls in death qi or imprisoned qi and is subjected to punishment and conflict, it indicates illness in women and children, disputes arising from private matters, and dishonesty among servants and attendants. In divination regarding legal cases, if Tai Yin enters the hexagram and is mutually generated by the day stem, it is favorable to voluntarily report oneself. In divination regarding guilt, if Tai Yin enters the hexagram and is subjected to punishment and conflict, it indicates that a vow made to gods and buddhas was not fulfilled previously.

When divining about thieves, it is most undesirable for Tai Yin to enter the hexagram or to be present on the day or the hour stem. In such cases, the thieves are difficult to catch, because Tai Yin, like Liu He, is a private gate between heaven and earth. Xu's statement says: When Tai Yin and Liu He both rest on the day stem, there is hidden fortune virtue assisting, allowing one to travel far. When divining about tombs or houses, if Tai Yin enters the hexagram, then according to the direction where it rests, there will be a temple or something with a unique and beautiful name.

Divination for marriage, if Tai Yin is seen along with You, Hai, and Wei in the first transmission, and also present on the day and the heavenly stem, then the woman's character is certainly improper; otherwise, it indicates interference by deities or women obstructing. If Tai Yin is on the day stem and reversely overcomes the day stem, it indicates promiscuity. If it is on Bingwu day, there is fortune in wealth. Tai Yin falling on Shen or You is called 'drawing the sword', indicating matters concerning the woman. Further, according to the four seasonal energies: Tai Yin in a strong position indicates marriage and private matters between men and women; in a growing position, indicates hidden wealth; in a dead position, indicates death due to private affairs; in a captive position, indicates being imprisoned due to private affairs; in a resting position, relates to witches and concealment.

Tai Yin · Assignment

Tai Yin's actions are always concealed and obscured, bringing about unstable fortune and misfortune. When it falls in Zi, it is called 'Chui Lian', indicating strife among concubines and wives. When it falls in Chou, it is called 'Shou Ju', indicating mutual concealment between superiors and inferiors. When it falls in Xu, it is called 'Bei Cha', indicating worry about strange occurrences and false accusations from small people. When it falls in Chen, it is called 'Zao Yin', indicating disputes and legal entanglements. When it falls in Yin, it is called 'Die Zu', and when it falls in Wu, it is called 'Tuo Jin', both indicating hidden changes in property and documents. When it falls in Hai, it is called 'Luo Xing', and when it falls in Si, it is called 'Fu Zhen', both indicating disputes, theft, and sudden worries. When it falls in You, it is called 'Bi Hu', and when it falls in Wei, it is called 'Kan Shu', both conforming to the refined conduct of scholars. When it falls in Mao, it is called 'Wei Xing', and when it falls in Shen, it is called 'Zhi Zheng', both suitable for the integrity and steadfastness of gentlemen.

All matters governed by Tai Yin tend to involve some degree of concealment, even when they bring good fortune. Zi represents the inner chamber, and Tai Yin is the concubine, hence it is called "Chui Lian," indicating mutual harassment between wives and concubines. Chou represents the residence of the noble, and Tai Yin overlying it signifies mutual obscuring between superiors and inferiors; in matters of marriage, it often indicates that a nobleman will be involved in the arrangement. Another interpretation suggests it may relate to vows made to monks or Taoists. Xu represents the native house of Tian Kong, symbolizing small people, so one should beware of slander. Chen signifies discord and disputes, and also represents imprisonment, thus indicating legal disputes; another interpretation says that Xu is called "Xiu Yi," which relates to marriage matters, while Chen is called "Li Guan," indicating that affairs can be successfully completed, and also suggests miscarriage, injury to women, falls, and changes in property.

Tai Yin in the寅 position is called "Tuo Jin," indicating the initiation of official documents. Whether it brings worry or joy depends on the time of day when the divination is cast. Another interpretation suggests that on the午 day, Tai Yin with disheveled hair signifies a state of sorrow, while in the寅 position it indicates promotion, transfer, and receiving favors. Metal generates water, and since Tai Yin belongs to metal and is placed on the亥 water position, it loses its strength and becomes "Lu Ti" (naked). The亥 position is also the position of Xuan Wu, and the酉 gold is like jewels, so this indicates matters related to women, such as theft, or illness in pregnant women. Another interpretation suggests it may instead indicate the joy of pregnancy. The巳 position belongs to fire, which can overcome the酉 metal, so it is called "Fu Zhen," indicating disputes involving women's speech.

You is the native place of Tai Yin, so it is called 'closed door'. Wei is at the end of summer, about to welcome the autumn season, with the arrival of metal energy, so it is called 'reading books'. Mao is the gate, from which Tai Yin departs, indicating a person's integrity. Shen is the official place of metal, so it is called 'governing'. These four positions, if a gentleman draws them, they are auspicious; if a petty person draws them, they are inauspicious. Another interpretation says: Tai Yin in You governs servants, illness, going out and coming in, and one should beware of worries and troubles; in Wei it governs conveying messages, deceit, and loss or damage, and also matters of marriage.

Tai Yin · Poetry

The Nobleman is followed by the Tai Yin, who holds the position of Inner Historian and Chief Assistant, governing matters of private affairs between men and women, concealment and secrecy. Such matters continue to occur repeatedly. If a gentleman divines this, the charge may be either confirmed or dismissed, remaining uncertain. If a petty person divines this, he may be involved in embezzlement and deceit, leading to anxiety and alarm. If Tai Yin is in a strong position and is mutually generated by the Day Stem, then matters concerning marriage will be verified. However, if Tai Yin is weak and suffers from punishment or suppression, then offerings to deities must be made to see results. In divination regarding illness, it indicates a foot ailment and injury to the waist. If there is supernatural interference, one must pray to the Kitchen God for effectiveness.

Tai Yin · Class of Deities

The class deity of Tai Yin: in terms of people, it is the same as the Heavenly Empress, though some say it represents a low-ranking concubine. In terms of ghosts and spirits, it represents female demons, the kitchen god, and the ghost of a family without descendants. In terms of diseases, it represents injuries to the heart, abdomen, waist, and feet. In terms of grains, it represents wheat. In terms of animals, it represents chickens, pheasants, and various flying birds. In terms of objects, it represents metal and needles. When strange phenomena appear, they are things found in the wild or in water. Its color is yellow with a white tinge, and its number is six.

Heavenly Empress Discourse

The Heavenly Empress serves in heaven attending to the Heavenly Emperor, acting as a queen consort. She is the deity in charge of overcast weather and rain in the Thunder Bureau. The original text states she is positioned at 'before one', but according to the arrangement of the twelve generals, she is actually the first after the Nobleman. Her native branch is Renzi, belonging to the Water element, which is strong in the third month of winter, making her a favorable general. The Heavenly Empress represents the extreme of the six yin, being the fifth daughter of the Northern Black Emperor. She holds the position of a minister, overseeing the expenditure of wealth and managing internal affairs. She governs the inner court, pairs with the Nobleman, and is generally gentle and slow in her actions. She perceives the highest position in the universe, acting as a kind mother to all princes. When she is in a favorable position, she is pure, upright, noble, and esteemed; when she is in an unfavorable position, she becomes licentious and corrupt, causing disturbances in human relationships. The Heavenly Empress prefers to be accompanied by the Azure Dragon, Tai Chang, Nobleman, and Liu He, but fears Gou Chen and Tian Kong, the earth deities. She is not suitable to be placed in the seasons of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei.

The Heavenly Empress oversees palace affairs, private matters, celebrations, women, property, marriage and childbirth, as well as rewards, pardons, festivities and grace. When she behaves abnormally and does evil, it indicates disorder within the inner chambers, unclear private relationships, deceit, falsehood, disputes over words, and the loss of people. When divining, if the Heavenly Empress is positioned over the year stem and approaches the day stem, and is located at the portal position, it signifies an imminent sign of grace and pardon. If this is further combined with auspicious patterns such as the Three Yangs or the Three Lights, the prediction becomes even more accurate. For matters concerning the government, encountering this pattern is most favorable. If she does not occupy the portal position but only enters the four lessons and three transmissions, it indicates that matters will be delayed and sluggish.

The deity riding on the Heavenly Empress is most disliked when the Earth Plate below reverses to overcome the Heaven Plate above, which indicates there will be matters of being humiliated by small people. Since the Heavenly Empress is the Queen Star, representing a woman's gentle and weak nature, it should not be subdued by those in lower positions. In matters of marriage, it is favorable if the Heavenly Empress and the Day Stem mutually generate, or if they form a Triple Harmony or Liu He. In such cases, the marriage will succeed. Conversely, if it does not, the marriage will not. If the Heavenly Empress overcomes the Day Stem, it indicates the woman is willing but the man is not. If the Day Stem overcomes the Heavenly Empress, it indicates the man is willing but the woman is not. If the entire divination shows Daji, it suggests initial obstacles but eventual success.

By observing the deity that the Heavenly Empress rides, one can determine the nature and appearance of a woman. If the Heavenly Empress rides the Post-horse and there is also the Relief Deity in the native's chart, it indicates separation. If the阴神 of the Heavenly Empress transforms into the Black Tortoise, the matter is obscure and unclear; if it transforms into the White Tiger, it indicates the wife is ill and the situation is dangerous. If the Tiangang (Chen) transforms into the Heavenly Empress and is added to the woman's age, it indicates a miscarriage. If theYin Spirit of the Heavenly Empress falls in Shen and the阳神 falls in You, it indicates that matters of immorality are not yet clear. There is another saying that divination involving the Heavenly Empress is mostly about women. If suddenly the earth element is strong and the earth overcomes water, it indicates disaster and loss. If the Heavenly Empress is in Wu or Wei and the day stem is Ren or Gui, then out of ten plans nothing will be true. According to the four seasons' energies: if the Heavenly Empress rides a strong energy, it indicates marriage and feasting; if it rides a supportive energy, it indicates private matters of the wife; if it rides a dead energy, it indicates death and wealth; if it rides a captive energy, it indicates being imprisoned due to immorality; if it rides a resting energy, it indicates private affairs and illness.

Heavenly Empress · Assignment

The Heavenly Empress governs matters concerning women, where affairs often occur in secrecy or concealment. If it falls on the Hour of the Rat, it is called 'Guarding the Chamber'; if it falls on the Hour of the Pig, it is called 'Managing Affairs', which is suitable whether there is movement or stillness. If it falls on the Hour of the Rabbit, it is called 'Approaching the Gate'; if it falls on the Hour of the Ox, it is called 'Leaning on the Door', indicating suspicion of adultery and damage to reputation. If it falls on the Hour of the Dog, it is called 'Lifting the Curtain'; if it falls on the Hour of the Horse, it is called 'Lying on the Pillow', suggesting either sighing heavily or lying sick and moaning. If it falls on the Hour of the Snake, it is called 'Bare Body'; if it falls on the Hour of the Dragon, it is called 'Destroying Makeup', indicating either sorrow and grief or suffering disgrace. The reason for ease and comfort is that if it falls on the Hour of the Tiger, it is called 'Haircut'; if it falls on the Hour of the Monkey, it is called 'Improving Appearance'. The reason for anxiety and alarm is that if it falls on the Hour of the Ox, it is called 'Secret Observation'; if it falls on the Hour of the Sheep, it is called 'Bathing'.

The Heavenly Empress is favorable for stillness when in the Zi position and for action when in the Hai position. There is another view that in Zi it signifies the Nobleman, weddings, messages from afar, and thieves, while in Hai it signifies a woman's illness and involvement in legal cases leading to imprisonment. The卯 and酉 positions are considered gate positions, thus associated with illicit relationships and household unrest. The Wu position is the fetal position of water, hence called "伏枕," indicating illness in pregnant women. The Xu position is associated with imprisonment, as water is subdued by earth here, hence called "褰衣," indicating loss of property and legal disputes. When water reaches the Si position, it becomes excessive and loses its restraint, hence called "裸体," signifying disgrace from immoral behavior. The Chen position is also associated with imprisonment, hence called "毁妆," indicating loss of clothing and legal cases; another view suggests that the魁 (Xu) and罡 (Chen) transform into the Heavenly Empress, indicating a woman suffering from a severe illness hidden within the household; yet another view states that the Heavenly Empress in Chen signifies marriage and childbirth.

The trigram Yin represents hair and fur, and since water nourishes wood, it is called "haircut"; another interpretation says it relates to pending official documents. The trigram Shen is the place where water is born, and since it can hold water, it is called "refinement of appearance"; another interpretation says it relates to secret affairs and private matters. Yin combines with Hai, and Chou is adjacent, so it is called "sneaking a look," relating to private matters; another interpretation says it relates to marriage. There is also an interpretation that when the Heavenly Empress is on Chou and added to the day branch, initiating the first transmission occurs at night, indicating a dream of intercourse with a ghost. The trigram Wei represents clothing, and since water is restrained by earth in Wei, it is called "bathing," indicating worry for women. Another interpretation says when Tai Yin and the Heavenly Empress are together at Xiaoji (Wei), it indicates women getting married; another interpretation says it indicates the male acquiring land and property.

Heavenly Empress · Poem

The Heavenly Empress, who comes immediately after the Nobleman, represents a palace lady of beauty and grace. In all matters, one should only restrain and gather in, not allow things to run freely. If a gentleman draws this, it indicates promotion and hosting banquets; if a petty person draws it, it signifies preparing ceremonies and discussing marriage. When the Heavenly Empress is in a prosperous and strong position, she can protect her wife, concubines, and property; but if she falls into a weak and confined state, there will be harm, and it indicates secret affairs and disorder. If this is drawn for illness, it suggests dysentery and ailments of the waist and limbs; the spirits causing trouble are the river god and the ghosts of those drowned.

Heavenly Empress · Category of Deities

Day Branch

This verse explains the relationships of generation and overcoming between the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the day. If the heavenly stem of the day is generated by the heavenly stem riding on it, all matters will be auspicious, with help from people during the day and protection from spirits at night. If the heavenly stem of the day is overcome by the heavenly stem riding on it, all matters will be unfavorable, with harm from people during the day and disturbances from ghosts at night. Conversely, if the heavenly stem of the day generates the heavenly stem riding on it, wealth will be spent without benefit; if the heavenly stem of the day overcomes the heavenly stem riding on it, affairs will be hindered and progress will be blocked. If the heavenly stem of the day generates the earthly branch, and the heavenly stem of the earthly branch also generates the heavenly stem of the day, then both the day and the earthly branch are supported by the heavenly stems above, resulting in smoothness for both person and dwelling, with vitality everywhere. If the heavenly stem of the day overcomes the earthly branch, and the heavenly stem of the earthly branch also overcomes the heavenly stem of the day, then both the day and the earthly branch are overcome by the heavenly stems above, leading to mutual harm and overall misfortune.

The heavenly stem on the day stem drains the day branch, meaning I am leaking and consuming him; the heavenly stem on the day branch drains the day stem, meaning he is leaking and consuming me; if both the day stem and day branch are drained by their respective heavenly stems, then both sides must be cautious of being drained, leading to delays and difficulties in achieving things. If the heavenly stem on the day stem is strong in the day branch, and the heavenly stem on the day branch is strong in the day stem, and both the day stem and day branch have strong heavenly stems that are calm and unmoving, this is considered a禄 (favorable status). However, if they move, they will fall into a trap. If the day stem moves to the day branch and is overcome by the lower element, this indicates that the person is being bullied by younger family members; if the day branch moves to the day stem and overcomes it, this means younger family members are coming to bully the person. These two patterns are called 「乱首」, indicating that father and son, brothers, and siblings will all scatter apart.

The day stem is above the day branch and receives its generation, indicating that the superior person is obedient to the inferior, and is instead tolerated by the other. When the day branch is above the day stem and generates it, it signifies that the other party actively comes to support. If the day stem is above the day branch and generates the day branch, it indicates a prosperous household but declining people, with frequent losses. If the day branch is above the day stem and drains the day stem, it also indicates loss of wealth. If the day stem is above the day branch and overcomes the day branch, although the matter requires effort, it ultimately brings wealth. If the day branch is above the day stem and is overcome by the day stem, it indicates benefit to the superior and sorrow for the inferior. These two situations are both called '赘婿'. If the day and the heavenly stem share the same earthly branch and are accompanied by a favorable general, then it is auspicious.

The day stem sees the禄神 andThe Post-horse, indicating promotion and transfer of position; if the day stem meets theThe Post-horse in the day branch, it signifies changes in the family residence — the virtuous should expect promotion, while the petty should consider moving. If the禄神 of the day stem is located in the day branch, it indicates being oppressed by others, holding power on behalf of someone else but without proper recognition, and this is the meaning of such a chart. If both the day and the hour contain the德神 and are accompanied by auspicious generals, genuine advancement is assured. If theLiu He is present, it indicates harmonious matters, and at this time, it is not advisable to break apart, otherwise there will be worries and illness. If both the day and the hour are in the墓, it indicates confusion and lack of clarity, as if in a fog; if these patterns are accompanied by the墓 of ghostly influences, it becomes a hidden ghost, which should be especially guarded against.

The host and guest sides are not in harmony and are suspicious of each other because the day and the day branch are mutually harmful and conflicting. When the day and day branch meet a weak and declining energy, the people and the household will decline. If they meet the spirit of termination, old matters will be concluded, which is actually favorable. If they meet death qi and the death deity, it is only suitable for rest and recuperation. If it is exactly the kongwang, then everything is empty and not substantial. If the day lacks a lesson, the host will be anxious. If the day branch lacks a lesson, the household will be disturbed. If there are the卯 and酉 positions, it indicates obstruction. If there are the魁 (戌) and罡 (辰) along with the Teng Snake and White Tiger, there will be harm and loss.

Initiating Transmission

The day stem governs external matters, while the day branch governs internal matters. The four lessons (four transmissions), which are the foundation of the Six Dynasties divination method, are derived from the day stem and day branch, each contributing two lessons, making a total of four. These four lessons must be analyzed in relation to the day and the heavenly stem. The first and second lessons belong to the day stem, and the initiating transmission (the first transmission of the three transmissions, which is the starting point of the entire lesson) derived from them governs external matters. The third and fourth lessons belong to the day branch, and the initiating transmission from them governs internal matters. When the first and second lessons produce the initiating transmission, the celestial nobleman moves in the forward direction, and the useful god appears before the nobleman, indicating that the outcome will be quick. When the third and fourth lessons produce the initiating transmission, the celestial nobleman moves in the reverse direction, and the useful god appears after the nobleman, meaning that good or bad outcomes will come slowly. If the initiating transmission is obtained outside the four lessons without following the usual method, it is called a sudden encounter, and the outcome of the divination is often accidental or occurs suddenly.

The initiating transmission indicates that if the upper spirit overcomes the lower spirit, the matter originates from outside, benefiting the man or the one who acts first, while the younger or the child suffers. If the lower spirit overcomes the upper spirit, the matter originates from within, benefiting the woman or the one who acts later, while the elder or superior suffers. When the lower overcomes the upper, it is called 'stealing' or 'thief'; when the upper overcomes the lower, it is called 'overcoming'. In Six Rats divination, the first priority in determining the three transmissions is the method of 'stealing and overcoming'. First check for 'stealing' from below to above; if there is none, then consider 'overcoming' from above to below. If the heavenly general and the riding spirit mutually overcome each other at the initiating transmission, it is called internal conflict, indicating that the matter was already about to be completed but is now disturbed. If the initiating transmission is restrained by both upper and lower spirits, it is called being forced, indicating that the person is not in control and is constantly driven by others. If the initiating transmission overcomes both upper and lower spirits, it is called 'separating the general', meaning the middle is cut off, making it difficult to unite, and the matter will not flourish.

The Initiating Transmission is seated in the position of Growth, and any plans will be fulfilled smoothly. If Growth also falls in the position of the墓地 (grave), then the matter involves old matters. If the Initiating Transmission falls in the position of failure or death, the matter will be ruined. If it falls in the position of绝地 (end), the matter will be concluded, waiting for someone to convey the message. If the Initiating Transmission falls in the position of墓地, the matter will be delayed, and the sick person is worried; however, the object is still present and the person can return, so the凶事 (adverse events) are old matters, and since the adverse events do not arise, the injuries and harm will be minor. If the Initiating Transmission meets刑 (punishment), 冲 (clash), 破 (break), or 害 (harm), the matter will face obstacles everywhere. If the Initiating Transmission falls in the position ofKongwang, both worries and joys are empty, and the truth cannot be concealed.

The initiating transmission (发用) that overcomes the day stem (日干) indicates worry about oneself and also suggests disputes with superiors; if it overcomes the day branch (日支), the family will not be at peace; if it overcomes the time of the matter (占时), the mind becomes unsettled and anxiety arises suddenly; if it overcomes the final transmission (末传), the matter will have a beginning but no end. If the initiating transmission overcomes the heavenly general (天将) on the person's own destiny, it indicates gaining wealth; if it overcomes the heavenly general on the year of birth (行年), the matter will certainly go wrong. If the initiating transmission is accompanied by the mourning-and-condolence spirit (丧门) or the visitor (吊客), the matter will involve people in mourning; if accompanied by the resting energy (休气), it indicates illness; if accompanied by the imprisoned energy (囚气), it indicates punishment. If the heavenly general enters its own temple position (本庙之位), it is a double blessing; if a凶将 returns to its own position, there is no need to worry, because the凶将 returning home will no longer cause trouble. If the initiating transmission is the year's master (太岁), and the middle and final transmissions are the month builder (月建) or the day branch (日辰), then the matter will come from a distance to near, and the matter will arrive quickly.

True Three Radiance

The so-called three lights refer to the sun, moon, and stars. When the sun, moon, and stars enter the four lessons and three transmissions and are taken as the useful god, their power of fortune or misfortune is doubled. Therefore, in the Six壬 system there is a special lesson pattern called "three lights." Now, those who practice the Six壬 system refer to the sun as Tian Fan and the moon as Di Fan, which refers to the sun and Tai Yin as the two month generals. As for the stars, which one should be taken? Generally, on days of Jia and Yi, the star of wood is taken; on days of Bing and Ding, the star of fire is taken, and so on accordingly. Some people advocate taking the star of water on days of Jia and Yi and the star of wood on days of Bing and Ding, which is determined by considering the generation and overcoming relationships of the six relations. If the sun, moon, and stars all appear in the four lessons and three transmissions, it is called true three lights. As for determining fortune or misfortune, it depends on the entire lesson pattern, and its effectiveness is twice as strong as ordinary lessons.

True Five Phases Elements

The five wandering stars in the sky should also be considered in relation to each other as the Heaven Plate and Earth Plate, which is the true meaning of the Five Phases. According to this calculation, if a favorable omen is obtained, even if aInauspicious General (malevolent general) appears among the Twelve Heavenly Generals, it will not bring disaster. For example, on the third day of the first lunar month at the second hour and a half, the celestial position is at six degrees of the Ji mansion. At the time of the divination, the sun is at three degrees of the Wei mansion. Then, the three degrees of Wei are added to the six degrees of Ji. If the planet Venus moving on the Heaven Plate comes to the Earth Plate's Wei fire or Shi fire degrees, which belong to fire, then gold is overcome by fire. On a Bing day, gold represents wife and wealth; encountering this situation indicates that seeking wealth will certainly succeed, but the wife will be ill and may not be retained. Conversely, if the planet Venus on the Heaven Plate comes to the Earth Plate's Di earth or Wei earth degrees, which belong to earth, then earth generates gold, which is a favorable situation. Divination regarding wealth and marriage will both be auspicious.

The above discusses the five phases generated when the five stars in the Heaven Plate operate over the native stars on the Earth Plate. Similarly, there are also stars in motion on the Earth Plate that should be considered as well. However, within a single divination lesson, there are already the five phases inherent to each deity, plus the hidden heavenly stems. Now adding the five stars as another layer, the complexity becomes too great. Therefore, this method is merely recorded here for reference, without being discarded.

Explanation of the Twelve Generals

The Nobleman (i.e., Tianyi Guiren, the first among the Twelve Heavenly Generals, who presides over elders, official rank, and the removal of misfortune) if it conflicts with the deity it rides upon, indicates that matters concerning official position should not be expected. When the Nobleman overcomes the Day Stem, it is called "Four Closures," which is immediately recognizable; anything that overcomes the Day Stem signifies loss in career. If the Nobleman is mutually generated with the Day Stem or Day Branch, the situation is favorable: if it is generated by the Day Branch, all affairs will be auspicious, bringing blessings, honor, and peace in all matters.

The "Teng Snake" (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing fear, strange dreams, and firelight) is favorable when it is in mutual generation with the day stem, bringing auspicious energy. The Twelve Heavenly Generals generally favor the day stem as their birth element, but they must also be in mutual generation with the deity they ride upon. The most unfavorable situation is when they are in conflict. For example, if Teng Snake rides upon a wood deity, wood can generate the fire of Teng Snake, which is favorable; if it rides upon a water deity, water will overcome the fire of Teng Snake, which is a conflict. The same principle applies to the other generals. If Teng Snake is in conflict with the day stem, worries and disturbances will affect the child.

The Teng Snake falling in the first transmission indicates frequent strange dreams and restlessness of mind; if it falls in the final transmission, one should calculate from the divination to determine fire-related disasters. If the Teng Snake is accompanied by both fire and wood in the upper and lower positions, and is also riding on the Heavenly Fire Evil and Earth Fire Evil, it can be judged as a fire calamity. If such a situation appears on the day stem or the house stem and there is no salvation, it definitely indicates a fire disaster. The house refers to the fifth position of the earthly branches before one's birth stem. The method of calculating the fire light evil is to start from the戌 in the first month and proceed in reverse order of the twelve earthly branches; the fire candle evil starts from the巳 in the first month and proceeds in the forward order of the twelve earthly branches. These two evils do not need to be considered if they do not overcome the day stem; once they do overcome the day stem, the light case may injure people, and the severe case may destroy houses and buildings.

The Vermilion Bird, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governs documents, speech, and messages. When the Vermilion Bird is in harmony with the day stem, it indicates official seals and authority. If the deity accompanying the Vermilion Bird is wood, fire, or earth, and is supported by the heavenly stem and nobleman, it signifies gaining power and receiving documents. However, if the Vermilion Bird overcomes the day stem, it is unfavorable, as it leads to disputes and lack of peace. If the Vermilion Bird is in the first transmission, troubles arise quickly, and lawsuits come urgently, because the first transmission overcoming the day stem causes sudden disputes. If the Vermilion Bird is in the final transmission, one should look further ahead: the Vermilion Bird flying over distant places indicates messages from afar; if it also rides the post-horse, the distant message will surely arrive. Additionally, the Vermilion Bird governs matters of trade and documents.

Liu He, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, is traditionally a god of fortune, and prayers to him are usually fulfilled. If Liu He does not overcome the day stem, all matters concerning harmony and transactions can be successfully completed. However, if Liu He overcomes the day stem, it is inauspicious to discuss matters of harmony, and the affairs will not succeed, with losses occurring along the way. The nature of the loss depends on the specific matter being consulted. If wealth is present in the chart, it indicates financial loss within the process of harmony. If Liu He overcomes the禄神 (L禄神, the official of fortune), it suggests legal troubles. When Liu He overcomes the day stem, there will be discord between husband and wife. If Liu He overcomes the day stem, there will be constant quarrels between spouses. If further complicated by the绝神 (绝神, the god of exhaustion) or离神 (离神, the god of separation), it indicates the separation of husband and wife. If Liu He also carries the heavenly stem of the current day as its combining partner, leading to mutual conflict, a definite breakup is expected.

Liu He (Hexagram of Harmony) initiating transmission and falling in the position of the gate, indicates there will be matters of deceit and wickedness: the so-called gates refer to the positions of Mao (卯) and You (酉). When Liu He is located at Mao or You, this is the case. When Liu He is on Si (巳) or Hai (亥), it indicates a long journey to the farthest reaches. If Liu He is on Si or Hai, and also the Heavenly Post-horse (Tian Yimashu) is present, or if the first transmission is exactly Dao Shen (the God of the Path), then it indicates a long journey. The method for determining Dao Shen is as follows: in the first month, it is Geng; in the second month, it is Xin; in the third month, it is Jia; in the fourth month, it is Gui; in the fifth month, it is Ren; in the sixth month, it is Yi; in the seventh month, it is Bing; in the eighth month, it is Ding; in the ninth month, it is Wu; in the tenth month, it is Ji; in the eleventh month, it is Geng; in the twelfth month, it is Xin.

Gou Chen (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing disputes, land, and lawsuits) once involved in a conflict, will dissipate all good fortune; when it contradicts the day stem, enmity will arise even on the road. If Gou Chen is located in the lodging palace of the day stem or overcomes the day stem, lawsuits will follow continuously, and there will be no good events; if it does not overcome the day stem, there will be no misfortune. If Gou Chen is simultaneously accompanied by both the post-horse and the heavenly horse, someone from afar will come to harm the person at home; even if the person is away, the road will be unfavorable.

When both the middle transmission and the final transmission are favorable, one should still be cautious of worries related to imprisonment. It is important to distinguish clearly: even though the middle and final transmissions are favorable, if they instead restrain Gou Chen, the outcome is merely average. If Gou Chen restrains the day stem, but does not fall on the day branch, and only appears as the first transmission, while the middle and final transmissions instead nourish the day stem and restrain Gou Chen, it is not considered凶. However, if Gou Chen appears in the first transmission and also serves as a ghost爻 on the day branch, then even if the middle and final transmissions have favorable generals, the outcome will still be凶.

The Azure Dragon (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing wealth and joy) harmonizing with the day stem brings smoothness in all affairs; if further supported by prosperous and strong energy, blessings will be more abundant. If the Azure Dragon conflicts with the day stem, it may lead to illness and loss of wealth, causing misfortunes to worsen. When the Azure Dragon harmonizes with the day stem without conflict, all endeavors will be auspicious; if additionally supported by strong energy, not falling into Kongwang, or sitting in the Fortune Virtue position with no internal conflict, it is most favorable for seeking wealth and handling affairs. If the Azure Dragon overcomes the day stem, it indicates financial loss; if it acts as the hidden spirit of the White Tiger and overcomes the day stem, it inevitably signifies death; but if it falls into Kongwang, the outcome will not be ominous.

"Sky Void" (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing deception, falsehood, and emptiness) causes disputes between above and below. Although it can help people escape from prison, it worsens illness. If the heavenly stem on the day branch conflicts with the day stem, it indicates death, loss of servants and livestock, and fright to children. Although "Sky Void" can resolve misfortune and bring peace to lawsuits and imprisonment, when it appears in a divination about illness, it indicates bad fortune. This is because falling into "Kongwang" (void) means something is merely named but not real, leading to loss of people.

The White Tiger (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing disease, bloodshed, and roads) is generally ominous. One must examine the details carefully. For a male divining, if the White Tiger indicates death, it refers to the female; for a female divining, it refers to the male. If the White Tiger's yang spirit overcomes the day stem, the woman will die; if the White Tiger's yin spirit overcomes the day stem, the man will die. Those who are originally healthy will become ill, and those already ill will die. If the White Tiger is placed on the卯 or酉 positions, which are the gate positions, even if death can be avoided, the event will occur near the road. Since the White Tiger inherently governs roads, if the divination does not show other ominous signs, it indicates matters related to going out and coming in.

The Tai Chang (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing clothing, food, feasting, and seals) failing to overcome the day stem indicates stability in joyful matters. If Tai Chang does not appear with Xiaoji (Wei), it suggests guests will come to visit. However, if Gou Chen and the day branch are together, matters will escalate to the authorities due to feasting and drinking. When Tai Chang fails to overcome the day stem, it signifies feasting, guests, and joy. But if Tai Chang overcomes the day stem, although there may be gatherings, one should beware of legal troubles and financial loss caused by banquets. If both Tai Chang and Gou Chen overcome the day stem, it is the most dangerous situation.

The Heavenly General Yuanwu (also known as Xuanwu, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing thieves, loss, and darkness) if in conflict with the day stem, indicates the need to beware of thieves causing harm, leading to financial loss, legal disputes, and people fleeing. If Yuanwu does not overcome the day stem, there is no harm; but once it does overcome the day stem, it signifies that people may flee, property may be lost, or one may be harmed by a one-eyed person or a dishonest thief. If there is no conflict or confrontation between Yuanwu and the day branch, it is a turn from bad to good, and there is no need for worry. Even if Yuanwu is riding on a malevolent star, as long as it does not overcome the day stem, there is nothing to fear. If Yuanwu generates the day stem, it is favorable to seek unexpected wealth in secret.

The Tai Yin (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing secret matters, concealment, and women) overcoming the day stem indicates the occurrence of immoral affairs, eventually leading to disturbances in lawsuits caused by women. Tai Yin overcoming the day stem signifies immorality; if it is accompanied by寅 or申, disputes will naturally subside. If Tai Yin appears together with Yuan Wu, it indicates hidden financial loss. If Tai Yin is only in the final transmission without overcoming the day stem, it does not need to be considered. The emergence of the奸神 (immoral deity) is in寅 in spring,亥 in summer,申 in autumn, and巳 in winter. The邪神 (evil deity) is in未 in the first lunar month, and follows the twelve earthly branches in reverse order. If Tai Yin appears together with these two deities, immoral and evil affairs will certainly arise. If Tai Yin combines with卯 or酉 to form a class, or appears with malevolent deities, the evil consequences are certain.

The Heavenly Empress, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governs women, marriage, and private matters. If she conflicts with the day stem, obscure matters will arise. If there is no conflict or overcoming, the marriage will surely succeed. If the Heavenly Empress overcomes the day stem, it indicates disputes involving women or matters that are unclear. If she is in the position of bathing or falls in the hours of亥, 子, 卯, or 酉, it suggests licentiousness and disputes. When there is no conflict, it is suitable to discuss marriage or seek a spouse, and also appropriate to seek wealth from women. If the hours of子, 亥, 卯, and 酉 all appear in the three transmissions, there will certainly be immoral affairs leading to public disputes. If the Heavenly Empress is in亥, 子, 卯, or 酉, and the first transmission is in the position of bathing, there is evidence of infidelity. If further the Gou Chen overcomes the day stem, legal disputes will arise, and imprisonment will follow.
