The hour stem Wu belongs to the fire deity. After the beginning of the Dog Days of Summer, the sun moves into the region of the sparrow's fire, so Wu is the "Month General" for the sixth month. It is called Shengguang because Wu is yang fire, occupying the position of the Li trigram, which radiates light in all directions. Just as the "Zhuangzi · Youyao" says, "The sun and moon rise, yet the torches do not cease"—when the great light of the sun is in the sky, the small torches can no longer be called light. The light of Wu surpasses all others, hence it is called Shengguang.

It is called Gongcao because in the tenth month, all things gather together, and the achievements of the year are completed, requiring accounting and settlement at the official office, and Gongcao is precisely the subordinate official responsible for this task.

The surnames associated with the earthly branch Yin include Han, Su, Zeng, Qiao, Lin (when Yin and Mao combine), Huo (when Zi and Yin combine), Du (when Xu and Yin combine), Cheng, and Zhu (when Tai Yin is present). Generally, surnames containing the radical for wood, the radical for grass, or the radical for walking, as well as surnames like Gao, Zhao, and Du, are governed by Yin. This is because Yin belongs to wood and signifies movement and travel, so these characters are derived from the imagery of wood, grass, and walking.
