On days with the stem Wu or Ji, the branch Zi is considered the "fetus wealth," meaning the fetal deity also serves as the wife wealth of the day stem. Meanwhile, the death qi of the seventh month is exactly at Zi. On days with the stem Geng or Xin, the branch Mao is considered the "fetus wealth," and the death qi of the tenth month is exactly at Mao. On days with the stem Ren or Gui, the branch Wu is considered the "fetus wealth," and the death qi of the first month is exactly at Wu. On days with the stem Jia or Yi, the branch You is considered the "fetus wealth," and the death qi of the fourth month is exactly at You. For example, in the Jiaxu decade, the fetal deity coincides with Kongwang. The same principle applies to other decades. The general rule is: if the fetal deity also serves as the death qi of the current month, a woman who is pregnant will not be able to carry the child to term.
When two vehicles meet and their elements harmonize, it is beneficial for the second and first.
In times of military engagement, one must be ready to adapt, choosing to fight, defend, retreat, or seek peace according to the pattern of the lesson. "Crossing the Vehicle and Longevity": When the heavenly stem and the earthly branch exchange positions and each attains longevity, it is most suitable for joint investment and business ventures. For example, on a Gengyin day, the heavenly stem is亥 and the earthly branch is巳; on a Jiashen day, the heavenly stem is巳 and the earthly branch is亥. On a Wushen day, the "Hidden Chant" lesson occurs (heavenly and earthly plates remain still, twelve spirits each occupy their original positions), and on a Wuyin day, the "Reversed Chant" lesson occurs (heavenly plate opposes the earthly plate, twelve spirits each occupy opposite positions). "Crossing the Vehicle and Wealth": This is suitable only for trade and profit-making, especially for transactions involving money. For example, on a Xinchou day, the heavenly stem is Zi and the earthly branch is Mao; on a Xinsi day, the heavenly stem is Shen and the earthly branch is Mao. The reversed chant lesson on a Renshen day and the hidden chant lesson on a Xinmao day, as well as on a Guiwei day when Wu is added to Gui and Zi is added to Wei, all fit this pattern.
"Interchange and Escape": Although both parties are involved in communication and affairs, they each secretly have the idea of "escape," meaning they both want to take advantage from the other.the so-called escape means that I generate the other but my energy is lost externally. For example, on a day with the stem Renwu, the branch is Wei and the branch Yin is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Yihai, the branch Yin is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Wuchen, the branch You is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Dingmao, the stem Wu is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Jiashen, the branch Si is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Gengyin, the branch Hai is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Renchen, the branch You is added to the stem; on a day with the stem Yiwei, the branch Mao is added to the stem; these are all cases of self-escape. "Interchange and Harm": Both sides are scheming to harm each other, and any dealings or affairs are not suitable, with mutual discord and damage. For example, on the day of Xinyou with a hidden chant lesson, on the day of Yimao with a hidden chant lesson, on the day of Dingchou with the branch Wu added to the stem, on the day of Jichou with the branch Wu added to the stem.
"Intersecting Vehicles Empty": When this divination result is obtained, the initial interaction between both parties is extremely harmonious and fulfilling, but in the end, it all turns out to be nothing but an illusion. This corresponds to the saying in the "Book of Songs · Da Ya": everything has a beginning, but few things have a good ending."Intersecting Vehicles with Punishment": When making friends, while the relationship is harmonious, conflict inevitably arises, and both parties lose proper decorum. This pattern applies to the hidden chant divination on Bingyin day, Wuyin day, Xinwei day, and Xinchou day."Intersecting Vehicles in Opposition": Regardless of the closeness of the relationship, it is always characterized by initial harmony followed by separation. This applies to husband and wife, father and son, brothers, and host and guest alike. This pattern is found in the hidden chant divination on Dingchou day, Guiwei day, Jiashen day, and Gengyin day.
"The 'Intersecting Vehicle Conquest'": This is a metaphor meaning poison hidden in honey or a knife concealed in a smile. It is also similar to what is said in the Analects, where resentment is kept hidden within but one still maintains friendly relations with the person. Once there is interaction and negotiation, disputes will inevitably arise. On Gengzi day, Chou is placed on Geng; on Gengxu day, Mao is placed on Geng; on Xinwei day, Wu is placed on Xin, and the person is thus attacked by the same. These all fall under this pattern. "Intersecting Vehicle Three Intersections": The three transmission elements are filled with the three intersection spirits. Whenever there are dealings involving trade, there will inevitably be hidden deceit or multiple matters entangled in a single transaction. On Jiyou day, Chen is placed on Ji; on Dingmao day, Wu is placed on Ding; on Dingyou day, Chen is placed on Ding; on Jimao day, Chen is placed on Ji. The original text mentions "Jimo Wuji" which is actually incorrect, as this would prevent the three transmissions from forming a three intersection pattern. This pattern does not occur on Zi day or Wu day.
"Triple Harmony in Trade": Using the Triple Harmony structure as the three transmissions, the day stem and day branch also cross to form a harmonious relationship, also known as the Triple Harmony. Whenever this pattern occurs, the family is harmonious and aligned with benevolence and righteousness, while outsiders also come to assist and promote cooperation. However, it is particularly unfavorable if the situation falls under the void. For example, on Yichou day, the three transmissions are Si, Chou, and You; on Xinwei day, the three transmissions are Mao, Hai, and Wei, all of which fall into this category. In the above examples, the day stem and the heavenly stem on the branch form the "Liu He" (Six Harmonies), where the twelve branches are paired to form harmonious relationships, such as Zi with Chou and Yin with Hai. The day branch also forms a Liu He with the heavenly stem on the stem, creating a cross-harmony, hence called the "Triple Harmony in Trade." Whenever this pattern appears, it indicates that cooperation is facilitated through connections, trade, interaction, and exchange. However, it is not favorable for divinations concerning breaking up or terminating agreements.
This pattern occurs within the sixty days, excluding five days—Jiayin, Gengshen, Dingwei, Jiwei, and Guichou—which are classified as 'eight exclusive' days (where the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in the same position, and the lodging palace is combined, making it impossible to distinguish between them), as they have no matching in the trade. The remaining fifty-five days each have a separate lesson, and further examination is needed to determine the fortune of the combined elements before making a judgment. Among these, if a hidden chant occurs and the heavenly stem and earthly branch form a harmonious combination, the interpretation remains the same. Particularly on Xinwei day, the heavenly stem is Wu and the earthly branch is Mao, with the three transmissions being Mao, Hai, and Wei. If this is used for a trade divination, the matter will succeed but will inevitably lead to disputes later. There are also cases where disputes occur first and then harmony follows, which is due to the initial transmission (the first transmission) being influenced by the 'Ding spirit' (the earthly branch where the Ding stem is located in the current ten-day cycle, which actively causes change and disturbance). The reverse chant lesson on Bingyin day is also interpreted in the same way.
The upper and lower parts are both in harmony, with both hearts aligned, second and second.
This lesson indicates that the upper and lower parts are united in purpose and the entire army exerts united effort. It refers to the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the day forming aLiu He (Liu He) relationship with each other, and also the day stem's lodgment palace and the day branch on the earth plate (the fixed lower layer of the twelve branches) forming a六合. The five days of伏吟 (Hidden Chant) lessons are 乙酉 (Yiyou), 丙申 (Bingshen), 戊申 (Wushen), 辛卯 (Xinmao), and 壬寅 (Renyin). The "Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch Meeting Pattern" is as follows: on Yiyou day, the酉 (You) is placed on the 乙 (Yi), or the 乙 is placed on the 酉; on Bingshen day, the 申 (Shen) is placed on the 丙 (Bing), or the 巳 (Si) is placed on the 申; on Wushen day, the 申 is placed on the 戊 (Wu), or the 巳 is placed on the 申; on Xinmao day, the 卯 (Mao) is placed on the 辛 (Xin), or the 戌 (Xu) is placed on the 卯; on Renyin day, the 寅 (Yin) is placed on the 亥 (Hai), or the 壬 is placed on the 寅. The reason for establishing this pattern is that both the upper and lower layers form aLiu He relationship.
"Both upper and lower parts are in harmony": The day stem combines with the heavenly stem above it to form aLiu He (Liu He), and the day branch also combines with the heavenly stem above it to form aLiu He. For example, on a Jiashen day, the亥 (Hai) above the stem combines with the Jiashen's lodgment palace, and the巳 (Si) above the branch combines with the申 (Shen) branch. Similarly, on a Dingchou day, the stem above is午 (Wu) and the branch above is子 (Zi); the same applies to Jichou day. On a Guiwei day, the stem above is子 (Zi) and the branch above is午 (Wu); on a Gengyin day, the stem above is巳 (Si) and the branch above is亥 (Hai). These examples all show that both upper and lower parts form harmonies, hence the term "both upper and lower parts are in harmony."
"The六合 is formed only between the heavenly stems and earthly branches on the upper layer," meaning the combination occurs only between the heavenly stem and the earthly branch above, and the earth plate below does not form a combination. For example, on a Wuchen day, the heavenly stem above is Chou and the earthly branch above is Zi, and Chou and Zi combine; on a Xinwei day, the heavenly stem above is Yin and the earthly branch above is Wu, and Wu and Yin combine. Similarly, on a Yihai day, the heavenly stem above is You and the earthly branch above is Mao; on a Bingzi day, the heavenly stem above is Mao and the earthly branch above is You; on a Wuzi day, the heavenly stem above is Mao and the earthly branch above is You. All these cases fall into this category.
"The Interlocking Six Harmonies" refers to the Heaven Stem above the day's Heaven Stem combining with the day's Earthly Branch, and the Heaven Stem above the day's Earthly Branch combining with the day's Heaven Stem, forming a crosswise harmony. For example, on Yichou day, the Heaven Stem above is Zi and the Heaven Stem above the Earthly Branch is You; on Bingyin day, the Heaven Stem above is Hai and the Heaven Stem above the Earthly Branch is Shen; on Wuchen day, the Heaven Stem above is You; on Xinwei day, the Heaven Stem above is Wu; on Yihai day, the Heaven Stem above is Yin; on Bingzi day, the Heaven Stem above is Chou; on Wuyin day, the Heaven Stem above is Hai. Each day can produce such a divination. If any of these characters fall into Kongwang, it turns into a凶咎 (adverse outcome). All these forms of harmony indicate that both host and guest are in harmony, representing a situation where human and divine forces align and the matter and its logic are in harmony.
"The Outer Harmony and Inner Obstruction Pattern": "Chā yá" refers to a situation where branches are twisted and tangled, causing inconvenience and disorder. Whenever this pattern appears in a divination, it corresponds to the meaning—external harmony but internal obstruction. The reason lies in the fact that although the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in a harmonious relationship (Liu He), the day stem's lodging palace and the day branch on the earth plate form a "Six Harm" (a mutual hindrance among the twelve earthly branches, such as Zi and Wei being harmful, Chou and Wu being harmful). For example, on a Renshen day, if the heavenly stem is寅 and the earthly branch is亥, then寅 and亥 form a harmonious relationship, but the lodging palace of REN and the branch SHEN actually form a Six Harm. Another example is on a Yimao day (the original text says "Yi Ji Mao day," with an extra character), where the heavenly stem's Chou and the earthly branch's Zi form a harmonious relationship, but the earth plate's Chen and the branch Mao form a Six Harm. Moreover, the harmonious relationship falls into Kongwang (void), while the harm is real, leading to empty joy and actual harm in all matters.
On the day stem Xinyou, the Earthly Branch Chou on the day stem combines with Zi on the branch, forming a harmonious relationship, but both are in Kongwang. Only the six harmful relationship between the Earth Plate You and Xu remains actual. On the day stem Xinyou, the Earthly Branch Wei on the day stem combines with Wu on the branch, forming a harmonious relationship, while the Earth Plate You and Xu still form the six harmful relationship. On the day stem Yimao, the Earthly Branch Wei on the day stem combines with Wu on the branch, forming a harmonious relationship, while the Earth Plate Mao and Chen form the six harmful relationship. On the day stem Bingyin, the Earthly Branch Yin on the day stem combines with Hai on the branch, forming a harmonious relationship, but Bing is lodged in Si, and Si and Yin form the six harmful relationship. On the day stem Wuyin, the Earthly Branch Yin on the day stem combines with Hai on the branch, forming a harmonious relationship, but Wu is lodged in Si, and Si and Yin form the six harmful relationship. All these examples show that harmonies are apparent while harms are hidden.
The "Day Branch Nearby Pattern": When the day stem and day branch meet, the spirits above them form aLiu He. In any divination, this indicates that matters will undergo changes, and both parties will seek cooperation. For example, on a Renzi day, the branch Zi is placed on the亥, forming aLiu He with the丑 on the branch; this is a case where the branch is placed on the stem, and the亥, which is the lodgment of the壬 on the earth plate, is adjacent to the day branch Zi. On a Wuwu day, the stem is Wu and the branch is Wei, but Wu and Wei do not form a union, yet the branch is placed on the stem, and the stem and branch are adjacent. The same applies to a Bingwu day. When this pattern occurs, the host and guest will be harmonious, the people and spirits will be in accord, and the matter will be in line with reason. The "Stem and Branch Meeting Pattern": This is a case where the upper spirits are in union, but the stem and branch are not adjacent. It is still possible to seek cooperation and achieve success. For example, on a Bingyin day, the branch Yin is placed on the巳, and the亥 is placed on the Yin; on a Bingxu day, the branch Xu is placed on the巳, and the卯 is placed on the Xu; on a Wuxu day, the branch Xu is placed on the巳, and the卯 is placed on the Xu; on a Renchen day, the branch Chen is placed on the亥, and the酉 is placed on the Chen.
He asked about the matter, and the branch transmitted the stem, second and third.
This lesson indicates that the other party has something to deal with and will certainly seek my help. It states that the first transmission starts from the branch, and the final transmission returns to the stem. Whenever this lesson is used for divination, it always indicates that someone else will entrust me to act on their behalf in handling matters, and regardless of whether the matter is auspicious or inauspicious, it will succeed. If the divination indicates auspiciousness, then the auspicious matter will proceed smoothly; if it indicates inauspiciousness, the inauspicious matter will still come to pass. Divination regarding a traveler shows that the traveler will arrive, and divination regarding a request shows that the requested item can be obtained. For example, on a Guiyou day, the first transmission starts from the branch's Si, and the final transmission ends at the stem's You. The three transmissions are therefore Si, You, and Chou.
I inquire about an affair concerning the second and fourth branches.
The first transmission starts from the Heaven stem, and the final transmission ends at the Earthly branch. In all matters, one must strive hard, inevitably needing to beg others, and being controlled and suppressed by others, unable to express oneself freely. If the deity governing the matter is "prosperous and strong," meaning it is in its season and has vital energy, it is still favorable. However, if it is "dead or imprisoned," meaning it is out of season and lacks energy, then there will be no peace. This also indicates being oppressed by those of low status, and implies humbling oneself and seeking others with propriety. One should only lower one's posture and avoid being arrogant. When divining, all affairs will fail, the household will be discordant, the traveler has not yet arrived, the sick person will find it hard to recover, and there may even be the risk of death. For example, on a Dinghai day, the first transmission starts from the酉 (You) stem on the Heaven side, and the final transmission ends at the丑 (Chou) branch on the Earthly side.
When the day of Metal meets the day of Ding, calamity arises.
This chapter's imagery is: the country is at peace, but suddenly bandits rise in numbers. If someone with an official position divines this, it indicates a very quick appointment, and such a person does not want the god of the sixth transmission, which is mounted on the heavenly general, to be overcome by the heavenly general of the year. If a common person divines this, it is better to control the god mounted on the god of the sixth transmission. This pattern refers to days with the heavenly stems of Geng and Xin, and if the god of the sixth transmission in the current ten-day period is found in the three transmissions, the year's stem, and the day's stem, it indicates the occurrence of misfortune. If the god of the sixth transmission is mounted on Gou Chen (a heavenly general associated with conflict and connection), it indicates being pursued by official documents; if it is mounted on the monthly death qi, it indicates a death message from relatives in another county or city, requiring travel; if it is mounted on the nobleman (the first of the twelve heavenly generals, representing superiors and authority), it indicates being sent by the nobleman; if it is mounted on Yuan Wu, it indicates fleeing or a blood disaster for the wife. If it is mounted on Teng Snake or Zhu Què, the outcome will be especially clear.
On Gengwu and Xinwei days, if the卯 (Mao) is considered the Ding spirit, misfortune arises from the wife or due to seeking wealth which brings calamity, or one may first gain wealth and then suffer misfortune. On Gengchen and Xinsi days, if the丑 (Chou) is considered the Ding spirit, misfortune originates from the parents' burial ground or property. It is necessary to distinguish further: if Chou is prosperous and strong, the misfortune relates to property; if Chou is weak and dying, it relates to the burial ground. Especially on Xinsi day, when using the 'day general' (the heavenly general used in divination after sunrise, arranged in order), if Chou is occupied by the White Tiger (a凶将 indicating disease and death), acting as the Ding spirit, it remotely injures the day stem, leading to misfortune that occurs particularly quickly.
On Gengyin and Xinmao days, when亥 is considered the Ding Shen, calamities arise due to children; on Xinmao day, the daytime general is arranged in reverse order, with White Tiger sitting on亥, making the calamity particularly swift. On Gengzi and Xinchou days, when酉 is considered the Ding Shen, calamities arise due to brothers or oneself; further distinction is needed: on Geng days, the calamity relates to the elder brother, on Xin days, it relates to the younger brother, or oneself, as well as the remote movement of the Day Stem's禄 position. On Xinchou day, the night general is used, arranged in normal order, with White Tiger sitting on酉, making the calamity especially swift. On Gengxu and Xinhai days, when未 is considered the Ding Shen, calamities arise due to parents and elders; on Xinhai day, the night general is arranged in reverse order, with White Tiger sitting on未, making the calamity quick. On Gengshen and Xinyou days, when巳 is considered the Ding Shen, calamities arise due to officials and elders; further distinction is needed: on Geng days, the calamity relates to ghosts and spirits, while on Xin days, it relates to official affairs. The above classification of the branches where Ding Shen falls, according to different human affairs, is based on the relationship between Geng and Xin metal and the Five Phases of the respective branches: metal generates water, so亥 relates to children;酉 shares the same type as Geng and Xin, so it relates to brothers and oneself; earth generates metal, so未 relates to parents and elders; fire overcomes metal, so巳 relates to officials and elders.
The "Heavenly Fire Ghost Snake Bird Torture House Pattern" occurs when the fire official ghost is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird and attacks the "house god" (i.e., the day branch, representing the residence). The final transmission also attacks the day stem from a distance, forming this pattern. Only on Gengchen day, with the卯 (ox) added to the辰 (dragon), and during winter using the daytime general, does this pattern occur. When this pattern appears, the family will suffer from a fire disaster and resentment. There are also examples where the fire official ghost is accompanied by the Teng Snake or Vermilion Bird and attacks the house. In spring, when the fire official ghost is at午 (horse), on Jiashen day, Wushen day, and Gengshen day, the午 is placed on the申 (monkey) with the night general. The午 is accompanied by the Teng Snake (a general associated with fright and false alarms) and attacks the house god. To counteract this, one should take mud from the bottom of a well and apply it to the stove. The same method applies to the following examples.
In summer divination, the fire ghost is in You. On the days of Jiayin, Gengyin, and Wuyin, You is placed over Yin. At night, when the Heavenly General is on You, Vermilion Bird is on top, which harms the spirit of the house. On the days of Yimao and Jimao, You is placed over Mao. At night, when the Heavenly General is on You, Teng Snake is on top, which harms the house. On the day of Dingsi, You is placed over Mao. At day time, when the Heavenly General is on You, Vermilion Bird is on top, which harms the house. In autumn divination, the fire ghost is in Zi. On the days of Jiawu, Gengwu, and Wuwu, Zi is placed over Wu. At day time, when the Heavenly General is on Zi, Teng Snake is on top, which harms the house. On the day of Dingsi, Zi is placed over Si. At day time, when the Heavenly General is on Zi, Teng Snake is on top, which harms the house. On the day of Xinsi, Zi is placed over Si. At night, when the Heavenly General is on Zi, Vermilion Bird is on top, which harms the house. All these examples show that the official ghost of fire, which belongs to the season, is pressing down from above, and with Vermilion Bird or Teng Snake, the two heavenly generals associated with fire and its strange lights, it harms the day branch representing the house. Therefore, all are judged as there being a worry of fire and candles in the house. For exorcism, the same method is used as previously mentioned, taking mud from the bottom of a well to apply to the stove.
In winter divination, the fire ghost is at卯. On the days of Jiachen, Wuchen, and Gengchen, the卯 is placed over the辰, and during the day's hour, the卯 is multiplied by the Vermilion Bird, which injures the dwelling spirit. On the day of Guiwei, the卯 is placed over the未, and during the day's hour, the Vermilion Bird multiplies on the卯, injuring the dwelling. On the day of Xinchou, the卯 is placed over the丑, and during the night's hour, the Teng Snake multiplies on the卯, injuring the dwelling. On the day of Renchen, the卯 is placed over the辰, and during the day's hour, the Vermilion Bird multiplies on the卯, injuring the dwelling. Whenever such a situation occurs, it indicates that the dwelling is at risk of fire or candlelight disaster, and one should take precautions and perform rituals to appease it early.
The "Person and House Suffering Misfortune Pattern" indicates that the god above the day stem harms the day stem, and the god above the day branch further attacks the day stem by riding on the Ding god. This results in both the person and the house being in a dangerous situation, with the person suffering misfortune and the house becoming unstable. However, for those holding official positions, this pattern suggests a very quick appointment to office, and it is advisable to use the day of the noon hour. Whenever on a Geng day, the巳 (Si) is placed on the Geng, or on an Xin day, the午 (Wu) is placed on the Xin, it is considered an example of the Ding god affecting the house.
"The Snake and Tiger Hidden Ghost Pattern" focuses specifically on the two heavenly generals, Teng Snake and White Tiger. On any day with Jia as the stem, the庚 stem (hidden stem) that appears in the current ten-stem cycle is mounted by White Tiger and appears in six places: the stem, the branch, the three transmissions, and the year and destiny. Similarly, on any day with Xin as the stem, the丁 stem that appears in the current ten-stem cycle is mounted by Teng Snake and appears in these same six places. When these situations occur, the outcome is extremely凶, extremely dangerous, extremely strange, and extremely turbulent. Even if the position falls into Kongwang, it cannot be saved. For example, on Jiazi day, the Gengwu stem is placed on Wu, with the three transmissions being Wu, Yin, and Chen; or Gengwu is placed on Zi, forming a reverse transmission; or Gengwu is placed on Chou, with the three transmissions being Chen, Shen, and Zi. All of these use the day general and represent examples of the hidden Geng stem mounted by White Tiger, remotely harming the day stem. Another example is on Xinsi day, where the Dingchou stem is mounted by Teng Snake and placed on Si, with the three transmissions being Wu, Yin, and Chen; or Dingchou is placed on Shen, with the three transmissions being Mao, Shen, and Chou, and Ding falls in the final transmission; or Dingchou is placed on You, with the three transmissions being You, Chou, and Si, and Ding falls in the middle transmission. All of these use the night general and represent examples of the hidden Ding stem mounted by Teng Snake, remotely disturbing the day stem.
The "Strange and Harmful Pattern" indicates that the Month Aversion, Great Sha, Heaven's Eye, "Ancestral Spirit" (the position where the Day Stem's Five Phases are buried), and the Divine Spirit all signify strange and calamitous events. If any of these appear together on the year or day branch, the prediction is more accurate. For example, if the day stem is Yisi and the day branch is Wei in the fourth month, or if the day stem is Wuchen and the day branch is Chou in the tenth month, both indicate extremely strange and dangerous situations. The "Horse Carrying Tiger Ghost Pattern" refers to the Post-horse carrying an official ghost riding the White Tiger. For instance, if on Jiayin day, the transmission ends with Shen on Wu, and during the daytime, Shen is on top with the White Tiger; or in its hidden chant pattern, or if Shen is on Xu or Hai, also using the daytime as the main element; or on Wuwu day, with Yin on Wei using the daytime; or on Wuchen day, with Yin on Wei, Yin on You, and Yin on Hai, all using the night time—these all indicate the White Tiger harming the day stem. Although days like Jiaxu and Wushen also have similar patterns, fortunately the ghost element falls into Kongwang, so the harm does not occur. There are many other days that fit this pattern, but they cannot all be listed. Whenever this pattern appears, it indicates that harmful events will come quickly.
"The Snake and Tiger Multiplying on Ding Pattern": For example, if on a Yihai day the Chou is placed over the Hai, or on a Xinhai day the Wei is placed over the Hai, in both cases the Ding god is attacked by the White Tiger, causing damage to the day branch. This indicates that there will be disturbances related to the family home; otherwise, it may lead to the collapse of a building, resulting in injury to people or contracting a calamity that is hard to avoid. If on other days the official ghost is on Ding and also rides the Teng Snake, the danger and strangeness will be even greater. On a Yiwei day, the酉 is on the day stem, and if during the night the酉 is ridden by the Teng Snake, it also indicates a凶 (dangerous) situation. Additionally, if the Ding god acts as the day ghost and rides the White Tiger, directly attacking the day stem, then it is unavoidable that there will be misfortune involving oneself. This pattern only occurs on a Jisi day when the卯 is placed over the巳, and during the night, the卯 rides the White Tiger to attack the day stem.
Water day meets Ding, causing wealth to move, the second sixth.
This chapter's imagery is: seizing the enemy's supplies will certainly succeed. The only fear is if the heavenly general associated with the sixth transmission (sixth heavenly stem) is overcome by the divine spirit above the person's birth year, then the wealth will not move. This pattern refers to days of Jia and Gui. If in the three transmissions, the year's stem, and the day's branch, any of these six positions encounter the divine spirit of this month's Ding, it indicates the movement of wealth and also suggests receiving gifts from a distant person. If the person has not yet married, it signifies the joy of marriage; if already married, it indicates worry of separation from the wife.
On Renshen day and Guiyou day, seeing Mao is considered the Ding God, indicating that wealth is obtained due to matters concerning children. On Guiyou day, the wealth movement is mainly due to matters concerning the family home or property, or due to children. On Renwu day and Guiwei day, seeing Chou is considered the Ding God, indicating that wealth is obtained due to matters concerning officials or spirits. On Guiwei day, it is a Fu Yin lesson, and the interpretation is the same as on Guichou day. On Renchen day and Guisi day, seeing Hai is considered the Ding God, indicating that wealth is obtained due to matters concerning oneself or one's siblings. On Guisi day, seeing Hai with the Ding God and the Yimashi (Post-horse) together is called "Ding Ma Jiao Jia," and the movement of wealth is particularly rapid.
On Renyin and Guimao days, when酉 appears as the Ding spirit, it indicates that wealth moves due to parents and elders. On Guimao day, it also indicates that wealth moves due to family matters and property. On Renzi and Guichou days, when Wei appears as the Ding spirit, it indicates that wealth moves due to official or ghostly matters. On Guichou day, the day stem is Wei and the first transmission is also the Ding spirit, but all three transmissions are ghosts, so this kind of wealth should not be pursued. On Renxu and Guihai days, when Si appears as the Ding spirit, it indicates that wealth moves due to the wife. On Guihai day, the Si is combined with the Ding horse, so the movement of wealth is especially rapid, and it is more accurate to indicate either leaving the wife or marrying one.
The "Wealth Riding on Ding Horse Pattern" refers to a situation where the wealth爻 is accompanied by the Ding deity, or the wealth爻 itself is the Post-horse (驿马), which is the deity associated with travel and movement. Such a chart indicates that the matter will involve seeking wealth through travel and movement, or through the wife's affairs involving the use of money. If the Ding deity and the Post-horse coincide, it signifies a significant change related to wealth and the wife. For example, on a Jichou day, the亥 is the wealth and it is accompanied by the Ding horse; on Jiachen and Yisi days, the wealth is at Wei; on Bingshen and Dingyou days, the wealth is at You; on Wuzi day, the wealth is at Hai; on Jiaxu and Yihai days, the wealth is at Chou. All these cases fall under this pattern.
The Heavenly General Tai Chang, who governs clothing, food, feasting, and the granting of wealth, rides upon the Day Stem's long life position and appears on the dry branch. This indicates that the person is asking about marriage or matters involving the receiving of clothing and wealth. For example, on a Jia day, if亥 is placed on寅 with night general,亥 is riding Tai Chang; on a Ji day, if申 is placed on未 with day general,申 is riding Tai Chang; on a Gui Hai day,亥 is on the day stem and with night general, riding Tai Chang, with 未,巳, and卯 all being wealth signs. When Tai Chang rides the long life position of the day stem and appears on the branch, it indicates there will be a wedding in the family or that it is suitable to open a silk and brocade shop or a restaurant, with future prosperity. For instance, on Jia Zi day, if亥 is placed on Zi with night general and riding Tai Chang, it is exactly the long life position of Jia Wood, and also forms a mutual reinforcement with the vehicle sign. On Jia Xu day, if亥 is placed on Xu with night general, it also forms a mutual reinforcement with the vehicle sign and rides Tai Chang, which is the long life position of the day stem—these two examples are especially accurate for predicting marriage. Additionally, on Jiayin day, if亥 is placed on寅 with night general, and on Jiwei day, if申 is placed on未 with day general, they are also accurate.
"The 'Ox and Girl Meet' pattern: Among the twenty-eight mansions, the Ox mansion is in the position of Chou, and the Girl mansion is in the position of Zi. Zi and Chou are also in a harmonious relationship. If the Tai Chang is the initiating transmission, it takes the image of Niulang and Zhinu meeting. For example, on Yichou day, if the Chou position is added to Chou, or on Jichou day, if the Chou position is added to Zi, or on Bingzi day and Renzi day, if the Zi position is added to Chou with Tai Chang, it is very favorable for marriage. However, on Renzi day, it belongs to the 'Wuyin' lesson pattern, which represents improper and licentious relationships between men and women, and the marriage will certainly not succeed in the end."
The transmission of wealth transforms into ghostly wealth; seek it not in the second and seventh positions.
This chapter illustrates the principle that one should not seize the enemy's grain supplies nor accept bribes from the enemy. It refers to a situation where all three transmissions are considered as the wealth爻 of the day stem, but this wealth actually nourishes and strengthens the ghost爻 on the day stem, which then turns back to harm the day stem. Such a situation inevitably leads to misfortune caused by seeking wealth. One should also be cautious of a wife conspiring with outsiders, leading to loss. If the three transmissions are all generating the ghost on the branch, it indicates the destruction of the family. For example, on a Xinhai day, the day stem is Wu (午). The three transmissions are Wei (未), Mao (卯), and Hai (亥), forming a wood trinity, all considered as wealth for the metal Xinhai. This wealth should not be taken. One might hesitate, but the wealth is right there, and it is hard to resist. Once taken, the wood wealth will strengthen the fire on the day stem, which then turns to attack the metal Xinhai, inevitably leading to misfortune.
This kind of wealth is like putting it in the mouth of a tiger, or spreading honey on a knife edge; how can one safely take it? A person with even a little sense would realize that this wealth comes from misfortune and would certainly not take it, thus preserving himself and avoiding calamity. Although this pattern is not favorable for acquiring wealth, it is suitable to use one's own money to attend to noblemen and accomplish matters—meaning, when using the day's nobleman, using wealth to generate the nobleman. Any matter involving seeking connections or taking shortcuts can be successfully handled. For the days of Xin-Mao and Xin-Wei, when the day stem is Wu, the interpretation is the same. For the days of Ding-Si and Ding-Chou, when the day stem is Hai; as for the day of Ding-You, with the day stem being Hai, the three transmissions follow the path of Hai, Mao, and Wei, mutually generating, but the day stem is accompanied by a ghost. Fortunately, this ghost also acts as a nobleman and a virtuous deity. It is suitable to report to the nobleman and gain benefits, as well as to consult on matters concerning elders.
For example, on a Renxu day, the day stem is on Wei. When divining at night, Wei is occupied by Tai Chang. All three transmissions are draining the energy of the day stem. If this is about a sickness, the cause is due to dietary injury leading to the entanglement of evil spirits. The patient is likely to die unless the ghost on the day stem can be removed by the diviner's year and destiny. On a Dingchou day, the day stem is on Hai. The three transmissions are You, Chou, and Si. The metal wealth cannot generate the water of Hai, because the first and second transmissions fall into Kongwang, and the third transmission is occupied by Tian Kong (a heavenly general representing falsehood and unreliability). When divining at night, all three transmissions are occupied by heavenly generals of earth, which can eliminate the Hai ghost. In this case, although wealth cannot be obtained, the person is not harmed, but they will have to go through a lot of trouble and effort. In the end, neither obtaining wealth nor avoiding misfortune is achieved. The situations on Ding si and Ding you days should also be analyzed based on the heavenly generals.
"The transmission of wealth transforming into a ghost pattern": The three transmissions originally represent the wealth of the day stem, but instead they reverse to nourish the strong branch deity. That deity then turns back to attack the day stem. This kind of calamity must originate from within the family. Only by relying on the deity of the year and the birth deity to restrain this ghost can the deep harm be avoided. For example, on a Yisi day with the branch of Wei added to the Yisi, the three transmissions are Wei, Xu, and Xu, and the branch is Shen. Another example is when the branch of Hai is added to the branch of Chou, the three transmissions are Chou, Xu, and Wei, and the branch is Shen. On a Dinghai day with the branch of Shen added to Ding, the three transmissions are Shen, You, and Xu, and the branch is Zi. In such cases, it is most advisable to seek an official position through the method of "nourishing grain" (donating grain to obtain an official post), or to use wealth to inform the nobleman and gain favor to obtain a position through recommendation. If someone who already holds an official position consults this, it is a favorable omen, indicating certain promotion. Another example is on the four days of Ji Mao, Ji Hai, Ji You, and Ji Wei, where the day stem is Hai. Although it is considered the wealth of the day stem, the three transmissions form a curved and straight wood pattern, all attacking the day stem. In such cases, it is also advisable to seek an official position through the method of "nourishing grain."
The "Causing Misfortune Through Wealth Pattern" indicates either fear of one's wife, or the wealth爻 being accompanied by a凶将, or being harmed by the wife. The cause lies in the wealth爻 turning around to harm the day stem. For example, on a Gengchen day, the day stem is Chou. The first transmission is Yin wood, which represents wealth. The Yin wood is乘 by White Tiger, which harms the day stem's Chou earth. This inevitably leads to harm from the wife, possibly even death. Additionally, Chou is both the丁神 of this旬 and the墓 of Geng metal, pressing down upon the day stem. This is also a time when fate is in a period of disaster and decline, leading to such misfortune. Otherwise, it may indicate marrying a fierce wife and being disrespectful to one's parents.
"The Wealth Evasion Ghost Pattern": The heavenly stem above the day stem is originally the wealth stem, but the stem that emerges in the ten-day cycle is actually a ghost that overcomes the day stem. This pattern inevitably brings misfortune due to wealth, or leads to loss of life for the sake of food and drink, or causes legal troubles due to the wife. For example, if the day stem is Jia Xu and the emerging stem is Geng Chen, or if the day stem is Jia Chen and the emerging stem is Geng Xu, or if the day stem is Yi Chou and the emerging stem is Xin Wei, or if the day stem is Yi Wei and the emerging stem is Xin Chou, or if the day stem is Bing Yin and the emerging stem is Ren Shen, or if the day stem is Ren Xu and the emerging stem is Wu Wu, or if the day stem is Gui You and the emerging stem is Ji Si, or if the day stem is Ding Mao and the emerging stem is Gui You. "The Borrowing Money to Repay Debt Pattern": For example, if the day stem is Xin You and the heavenly stem is Mao, while the earthly branch is Yin, or if the day stem is Ren Zi and the heavenly stem is Si, or if the day stem is Bing Wu and the heavenly stem is Shen, or if there is a hidden chant pattern on Yi Wei. In all cases where the heavenly stem and earthly branch are the same, one should not seek wealth. This is called borrowing money to repay debt, resulting in a confusing and unclear account in the end.
Transmission: Ghosts Transforming Wealth and Money in Peril, Second Eight
The method of using the day stem for divination is the same as in the previous chapter. It refers to the case where all three transmissions are ghosts, which can overcome the "twin" (a yao of the same type as the day stem, which comes to take away wealth). If there is no element that takes away wealth, and a wealth yao appears in the three transmissions, then the wealth is secure and will not be destroyed. It also says that in a lesson where the three trigrams form a triple harmony, although all the trigrams are ghosts of the day stem, two of them are empty, leaving only one character, which is in the middle and acts as wealth. This is called complete ghosts turning into wealth. Such wealth is ultimately obtained from danger, and even though it is obtained, it is not secure. A wise gentleman would certainly not take it. If the person's birth year and current year also have the day ghost, misfortunes will still occur, and it cannot be considered real wealth. For example, on the day stems of Bing Shen, Bing Zi, and Bing Chen, the earth ox is on the day stem, which can resist the water trigram in the three transmissions, leaving only the metal shen as wealth. However, if the day is a daytime general, one should be slightly cautious about the azure dragon, teng snake, and black tortoise, which are all water animals, and fear that they may instead cause trouble.
The "Taking Back the Soul of a Debt" pattern: all three transmissions are things that drain or weaken the day stem, yet they turn around to nourish the prosperous wealth god on the day stem, as if a dead debt has returned its soul. For example, on a day with Jisi as the day stem, the day stem is亥, and the three transmissions are酉, 丑, and巳, which all drain the earth energy of Jisi, but unexpectedly the metal group turns to nourish the亥 water on the day stem, which is the wealth of Jisi. On a day with Jisi as the day stem, the day stem is亥 but falls into Kongwang, the effect is especially clear. Additionally, the reverse transmission lesson on Renyin day, and the five days Jiashen, Jiawu, Jiachou, Jiachen, and Jiayin where the day stem is戌, all fall into this category. Another example is on Dingchou day, where酉 is placed on巳 to initiate the transmission, and the buried earth in the tomb nourishes the fallen wealth, which is explained the same as before. There are also cases where the three transmissions drain energy but generate the wealth god on the branch. For instance, on Renyin and Renxu days, the branches are both午, and on Jiawu day, the branch is戌, which is similarly called taking back the soul of a debt.
The "Urgent Wealth Acquisition Pattern" refers to situations where the day stem is in a favorable position for wealth. For example, on an Yiwei day, if the Wei earth is placed above the Yi wood, it is considered the "Wealth Approaching the Person" pattern, meaning wealth comes to the person naturally. However, one should act quickly to seize the opportunity. If delayed, the Wei earth may become the tomb of the Yi wood, burying the day stem and potentially causing misfortune. Similarly, on a Xinmao day, if the Mao wood is placed above the Xin metal, it is also considered the "Wealth Approaching the Person" pattern, and the wealth should be seized promptly. Any delay may result in the Mao wood harming the戌 earth, leading to adverse effects.
The "Empty Wealth Pattern" refers to a situation where the wealth is considered empty or illusory. For example, if on a Bingzi day, the酉 (Metal) is placed on the巳 (Fire) position, the wealth falls into the empty, making it a phantom wealth. However, if the night general is used and the heavenly general turns to generate the wealth in the three transmissions, it is still favorable for seeking debts. The "Taking Wealth from Danger Pattern" occurs when the day stem overcomes the day branch, and the day branch represents wealth. However, the spirit on the branch is a ghost that overcomes the day stem, so obtaining this wealth inevitably involves some risk. It is like taking wealth from a dangerous situation. For example, on a Jiachen day, the Jia wood overcomes the Chen earth, which represents wealth, and the Shen metal is on the Chen position. On a Jiaxu day, the Shen metal on the Xu position falls into the empty, seemingly not to be feared. Similarly, on Yichou and Yiwei days, the branch has You (Metal), on Bingshen day the branch has Hai (Water), on Dingyou day the branch has Zi (Water), on Wuzi day the branch has Yin (Wood), on Jihai day the branch has Mao (Wood), on Gengyin day the branch has Si (Fire), on Xinmao day the branch has Wu (Fire) and falls into the empty, none of these should be feared.
