Whenever the class of days begins on the four central days, namely Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, and the heavenly stems and earthly branches of the day are occupied by the four central deities, and all three transmissions are also occupied by central deities, and the heavenly general is riding on Tai Yin and Liu He, it is called a Sanjiao lesson. The four central days refer to the four days of decline, that is, the position of bathing. In detail: when the day of the four central days is occupied by the four central deities on the day branch, whether it is a yang deity or a yin deity, it counts as the first level of intersection; when the central deity initiates the transmission and the three transmissions are also all central deities, it counts as the second level of intersection; when the central deity is accompanied by Tai Yin and Liu He generals, it counts as the third level of intersection. The three levels overlap, hence it is called Sanjiao. When this lesson is obtained, the matter is entangled and complicated. In terms of the hexagram, it belongs to Gu, which is a lesson of changing winds and clouds, unpredictable.

The interpretation states: there is hidden misconduct within the household, or the person is currently trying to hide. Matters under consideration are unclear, seeking wealth brings no benefit; lawsuits will involve criminal charges, and military actions will face an enemy. If further combined with a malevolent general, illness will be particularly severe. When encountering malevolent spirits, men commit serious crimes, while women are involved in secret relationships. If accompanied by Tai Yin or Liu He, it indicates misfortune for the household and hidden matters concerning female members. If accompanied by Tian Kong, it signifies deceit and fraud; if accompanied by Black Tortoise, it indicates loss of property; if accompanied by Teng Snake, it indicates fear and strange occurrences; if accompanied by Vermilion Bird, it indicates disputes over words; if accompanied by Gou Chen, it indicates conflicts; if accompanied by White Tiger, it indicates injury or death.

If the day stem falls on a yang stem such as Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, or Ren, it is called 'Jiao Luo,' indicating that private matters will come to light; if accompanied byInauspicious General (malevolent generals) or恶煞 (evil spirits), there may be injuries or harm. If the day stem falls on a yin stem such as Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, or Gui, it is called 'Jiao Lu,' indicating that one may take advantage of official salary for personal gain; if further accompanied by Yuan Wu (Black Tortoise), it signifies losing one's position due to private matters, matching the ominous image of the ninth line in the fourth position of the Gou hexagram, 'Bao Wu Yu' (enclosing without fish). Conversely, if the person's birth year has auspicious deities and generals, the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a prosperous and strong state, the three transmissions exactly correspond to Wu, Mao, and Zi, and the divination is made in the first or seventh lunar month, it is called 'Gao Gai Cheng Xuan,' which is extremely auspicious and does not follow the three intersections for ominous interpretations, matching the auspicious image of the ninth line in the fifth position of the Gou hexagram, 'Huan Zhang, You Yun Zi Tian' (keeping virtue, with falling stars from heaven).

For example, on a Wuzi day at noon, using the酉 general added to the noon hour, with卯 added to the Zi hour as the initiating transmission, the three transmissions are obtained as卯, 午, and 酉. The initial transmission, 卯, also carries Tai Yin, forming a triple intersection lesson. When setting up the lesson, the酉 general is placed on the noon hour. The heavenly plate deities are three positions ahead of the earthly plate. The lodging palace of Wu is in巳, and the earthly plate at巳 has 申, which is the first lesson 申 added to Wu. The 申 has 亥, which is the second lesson. The day branch Zi has卯, which is the third lesson卯 added to Zi. The卯 has 午, which is the fourth lesson. None of the four lessons have mutual control between upper and lower, except the third lesson where卯 wood controls the day stem Wu earth from a distance, which is considered a remote control initiating transmission. Therefore, the initial transmission is卯, the middle transmission is午, and the final transmission is酉, making the four cardinal directions complete. On a Wu day, the nobleman is in Chou during the day, but in this lesson, the nobleman falls on the earthly plate's Xu position. The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. Thus,卯 carries Tai Yin, 午 carries Bai Hu, and 酉 carries Gou Chen. The deities on the four lessons are successively carried by Qing Long, Zhu Que, Tai Yin, and Bai Hu.

"The 'Three Intersections' are distinguished in 'Ding E'. The first intersection occurs when both the day and the time of divination fall within the four central terms. The second intersection occurs when all four lessons and three transmissions are occupied by central deities. The third intersection occurs when the deity riding the heavenly general meets the heavenly empress, vermilion bird, tai yin, or liu he. Zi and Wu are the starting points of yin and yang energies, while Mao and You are the paths through which the sun and moon rise and set. These four defeated deities represent the gates of heaven and earth. When the day and time of divination, the lessons and transmissions, and the deity riding the heavenly general all coincide in the four central terms, it is called the 'Three Intersections'."

In terms of divination, this reading indicates that matters are entangled and complicated, with unclear connections and difficulties in making progress. It may suggest that there are hidden secrets within the family or that someone, perhaps oneself, wishes to hide. When planning affairs, they are obstructed by others, making success difficult. This reading is unfavorable for illness or legal disputes. Because the four central deities are pure and unmixed, there is no relationship of mutual generation or support between them, and the diviner refers to this as 'four directions and four levels'. There is only mutual punishment and destruction among them. There is no position of the four young months (寅, 申, 巳, 亥) in front to hide in, and no position of the four seasonal months (辰, 戌, 丑, 未) behind to flee to. Once encountering military disaster or bandits, even if one wishes to escape, it will be too late.

If aInauspicious General is present, a man's offense is considered a serious crime, while a woman's offense is regarded as adultery. If the heavens are occupied by Tai Yin or Liu He, it indicates that the family's gate is unfavorable, and female members or young children may be hiding private affairs. If the heavens are occupied by 天空, it signifies false words and fraud. If occupied by 元武, it indicates loss of property. If occupied by 螣蛇, it signifies fire-related disturbances. If occupied by 朱雀, it indicates disputes over words. If occupied by 勾陈, it indicates conflicts and quarrels. If occupied by 白虎, it indicates injuries and deaths, as well as mourning. On days of 阳干, it is called 交罗, indicating that private matters will come to light, and if accompanied by凶煞, it may lead to tragic consequences. On days of 阴干, it is called 交禄, indicating using the benefits of official rank for private gain. If occupied by 元武, it indicates losing one's official rank due to private affairs. When 午 is added to 酉, it is called 「死交」; when 酉 is added to 午, it is called 「破交」. When the heavens and earth plates are in opposition, it is called 「反目交」, and these situations do not lead to harmonious outcomes.

If the lesson does not include the Tai Yin and Liu He generals, it is called "San Jiao Bu Jiao"; if the Tai Su, Month Builder, day, and hour are all Zhong deities, it is called "San Jiao Bu Jie." One is insufficient, the other is excessive, and the calamities of these two are heavier than those of the standard San Jiao pattern. Conversely, if the year and month are in a prosperous and strong state along with the day stem and the initiating transmission, and the generals are auspicious, and the three transmissions are precisely Wu, Mao, and Zi, it is called "Xu Gai," which indicates great honor and high official rank when consulted about official positions.

This is also an example of a Sanjiao lesson. "Huagai" is formed in the same way as the four middle divinities, but there is a favorable deity present in the lesson. On the sixth month, Dingmao day, with the general at Wu and the time of the divination at Mao, the heavenly general, the day branch, and the time all fall on the middle divinities: Wu added to Mao, You added to Wu, Mao added to Zi, and Zi added to You, all four instances are middle divinities added together. The lodging palace of Ding is at Wei, and on the earth plate at Wei, we get Xu, which is the first lesson; on Xu, we get Chou, which is the second lesson; on the day branch Mao, we get Wu, which is the third lesson; on Wu, we get You, which is the fourth lesson. In the fourth lesson, the fire of Wu overcomes the metal of You, with the lower deity attacking the upper deity, so We take You as the initiating transmission, the middle transmission as Zi, and the final transmission as Mao. On a Ding day, the nobleman is at Hai in the daytime, but in this lesson, the nobleman falls on the earth plate at Shen. The heavenly general is arranged in reverse order, so You is multiplied by Zhuque, Zi by Tianhou, and Mao by Taichang. The deities on the four lessons are successively multiplied by Tengsnake, Taiyin, Qinglong, and Zhuque.

Whenever the four cardinal deities add to each other, and the four generals, namely Vermilion Bird, Heavenly Empress, Liu He, and Tai Yin, also appear in the four cardinal positions, it is also considered three intersections. Additionally, one should examine the riding general to determine the nature of the matter: encountering Teng Snake indicates fire disaster, encountering Gou Chen indicates disputes and lawsuits, encountering Black Tortoise indicates theft, and encountering White Tiger indicates injury.

"The *Observation of the Monthly Cycle* says: The deities of the four central directions are added upon the four central directions; first determine which one initiates the transmission. If there is a conflict among them, it is classified under the section of the Three Intersections. That is, when the directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are added in reverse order and the initiating transmission has a conflict, it is called the Three Intersections hexagram. If Zi is added to Mao, or You is added to Zi, and the initiating transmission occurs, and the three transmissions include the Black Tortoise, Liu He, and the Nobleman, it indicates a case of sexual misconduct. The Black Tortoise signifies secret theft, Liu He represents private matters; if the transmissions include Gou Chen and White Tiger, it indicates violence and escape. Adding the directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You in reverse order is called 'Breaking Addition,' which signifies that all matters are obstructed and ruined. The Heavenly Empress and Liu He are associated with immoral affairs leading to ruin. If the transmission starts with You added to Wu, it indicates that someone is acting as a matchmaker."

The song says, "A man's crime is against his father, a woman's crime is outside and involves a secret connection." This means that if the person being divined is in the sixth month, one should look at the lesson on Dingmao day at the卯 hour. "Zhongqiu added Zhongxia" refers to酉 added to午 ——酉 belongs to Zhongqiu, and午 belongs to Zhongxia, with the fire of午 overcoming the metal of酉, and the place being overcome is the origin of the matter. "There is a saving god or the formation of Huagai" means that unless there is another saving deity or the case exactly forms the Huagai pattern, the crime will cause great confusion. Huagai refers to the three transmissions being午,卯, and子, and if the transmission again meets the Heavenly Horse or the Three Marvels and Six Instruments entering the hexagram, it will be even more favorable.

The Xin Jing says: When the mansion of Maomu, located in You, and the mansion of Fangsu, located in Mao, are added to the day stem and day branch, the two generals Tai Yin and Liu He also arrive together; on this day, it is exactly the time of Zi and Wu deities, and the three transmissions are all in the four central directions, with similar elements attracting each other. This is called Sanjiao, indicating that there is a secret person staying in the family; it is either the person himself who wants to flee, or he wants to avoid a disaster. If the riding general is Teng Snake, it indicates a need to beware of fire; if it is Gou Chen, it indicates disputes; if it is Yuanwu or Baihu, it indicates trouble arising from murder.

The "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: If all three transmissions are of the middle deities, it is called three intersections. On days of the four middle stems, when the four middle deities are added together and enter the transmissions and initiating transmission, this is the first level of intersection; if the time of divination also coincides with the four middle stems, this is the second level of intersection; and if the superior general is one of the Vermilion Bird, Black Tortoise, Tai Yin, or Liu He, this is the third level of intersection. This divination indicates that matters are hidden and unclear, people lose their principles, affairs are obstructed, and whatever one does is hindered by others. To form three intersections, the three transmissions must all meet the above three conditions. If any of the three is missing, it is called three intersections not intersecting. If the sovereign, month builder, day, and hour are all middle deities, it is called three intersections not resolving. One is insufficient, the other is excessive; the calamities of these two situations are heavier than those of the standard three intersections.

Furthermore, the four central deities are pure and unadulterated, with no support from outside. They also lack the support of father and son mutual generation. The diviners call them "four levels and four directions," and they only mutually harm and destroy each other. They cannot advance forward, nor can they retreat backward: there is no position of the four young months (寅, 申, 巳, 亥) ahead to take refuge in, and no position of the four seasonal months (辰, 戌, 丑, 未) behind to flee to. They intersect and form an image, which is exactly when one cannot escape. Therefore, the master loses his conduct, matters are obstructed, and plans are ruined. If Heavenly Empress and Liu He enter the transmission, it indicates secret and obscure affairs. If Gou Chen and White Tiger enter the transmission, it indicates disputes, injuries, and calamities related to mourning and filial piety.

When the Wu trigram is added to You, it is called a 'dead meeting', and when You is added to Wu, it is called a 'broken meeting'. In general, such situations indicate that affairs will not succeed and relationships will not be harmonious. When the four central deities are reversed, meaning the Heaven and Earth plates are in opposition, it is called a 'mutual glare meeting', which is also inauspicious. In all three meeting patterns, if the Wu, Mao, and Zi deities appear along with the Heavenly Horse, Azure Dragon, and Tai Chang, it forms the 'Huagai Chéng Xuán' pattern, which is favorable for official matters. However, if these positions fall into Kongwang, it becomes 'Chéng Xuán Luò Mǎ'. If they also occur in the star mansions traversed by the sun and moon, it is called 'Tian Di Fan', and these situations should be carefully distinguished.

The "Zhi Qiao" says: The four central trigrams follow the order of Zi, Wu, Mao, You, corresponding to spring, summer, autumn, and winter. If one divines in spring, it is called "Guan Ge," like a male sheep colliding with a fence and unable to advance or retreat; if one divines in summer, it is called "Guan Lan," like a fish biting the hook; if one divines in autumn, it is called "Si Ping," and if the day coincides with the waxing and waning moon and the full moon, it is called "San Guang Bu Ren"; if one divines in winter, it is called "Li Yang," and if the time coincides with the sun, moon, and Chen and Xu, it is called "Si Men Jie Bi." When the four central trigrams reverse the order, following Zi, You, Wu, Mao: if one divines in spring, it is called "Xiang Jing," like a bird flying into a cage; if one divines in summer, it is called "Zheng Fan," like an ox stretching its neck to be slaughtered; if one divines in autumn, it is called "Shi You," resembling scattered things reuniting; if one divines in winter, it is called "Chu Jie," named for the arrival of yin's end and yang's beginning.

In the Sanjiao lesson, if the Heavenly Horse appears, it is called Huagai Cheng Xuan, also known as the Four Directions. If the person's true fortune aligns with the main fortune, it is called the Four Directions; if not, it is called the Four Dispersals. The Sanjiao indicates that there are three or four people involved in mutual dealings. The Heavenly Horse signifies travel. If the Four Directions pattern is accompanied by auspicious deities such as Qinglong or Zhuque, it indicates that a scholar will pass the examination, achieve success, and receive official salary. The Four Dispersals represent a situation where all five elements are without vitality, indicating problems such as miscarriage in women, like when You is added to Wu or Wu is added to Mao. If a woman's illness is divined and the Dead Qi deity appears, such as when Wu is added to You, it also indicates this condition.

In general, the branches Wu and You both belong to the category of self-punishment. Wu is a minor yin, while You is pure yin, which represents old yin. If You is in a state of birth or strength, it indicates the wife of the main house; but if it lacks birth or strength, it may represent a servant, a nun, or a wife who is a servant or nun. If You is combined with Zi and the Black Tortoise appears, and it is in a state of birth or strength, it often indicates that a servant gives birth. Both Wu and You are associated with blood disorders and impure pus and blood. One should refer to the official ghost of the day for a judgment. Those accompanied by ghosts are mostly indicative of lingering illnesses or disgraceful matters. If blood is seen and the Azure Dragon carries a fortune or a horse, it turns into wealth and joy: You represents wine, and the Azure Dragon represents wine and beauty, hence this interpretation.

Zi and Wu are the deities of roads; if a divination is made on Zi day or Wu day, the interpretation will definitely concern matters related to roads. Mao and You represent the dividing energy; when energy is divided, differences arise, and with differences comes disputes. If a divination is made on Mao day or You day, the interpretation will definitely concern disputes over division. Mao represents the outer gate, and the energy of the spring equinox is associated with Mao. Those who divinate on Mao day are influenced by the energy of spring growth and development. You represents the inner gate, and the energy of the autumn equinox is associated with You. Those who divinate on You day are influenced by the energy of autumn, which brings decline and withering. The energy of growth and development is auspicious, while the energy of decline and withering is inauspicious.

The "Zeng Men" says: The cause of the Sanjiao lesson is that there is a criminal hidden in the family of the person involved.the so-called Sanjiao refers to "Congkui" You, "Taichong" Mao, and Liuhe and Taiyin all approaching the day stem and day branch to initiate the transmission; in addition, if the four zhong deities are added to the four zhong, and the three transmissions are all in the four zhong, it is also considered Sanjiao. The "Dingzhang" says: Taichong Mao, Congkui You, Liuhe, and Taiyin are all deities of the gate, capable of concealing and hiding things. Liuhe is the private gate of heaven, and Taiyin specializes in concealment. If Mao and You, along with Taiyin and Liuhe, all approach the day stem and day branch and become the useful god, it is called Sanjiao hexagram. Using it for divination indicates that there is a criminal hidden in the family of the person involved.

For example, on a Yisi day, the酉 is placed over the巳, and the month general is established, with the lesson also containing Liu He. This is called a Sanjiao lesson. Another example is on a Dingyou day, where the午 is placed over the酉, and the upper god conquers the lower god in the initiating transmission. The middle transmission shows Taichong (Mao), and the final transmission falls on Shenhou (Zi). All three transmissions are at the four central points, which indicate hiding criminals. The door is where people enter and exit, and both public and private matters pass through it. Taiyin governs hidden private affairs, and Liu He is the private gate in the sky. Both can conceal and hide criminals.

The positions of卯 and酉 are where the sun and moon rise and set; the positions of子 and午 are where the yin and yang energies begin. These four positions may be bright or dark, public or private. The three transmissions all fall on the four central positions. Their entry and exit are subtle and concealed, and they also indicate the hiding of criminals. To determine who is hidden, refer to the final transmission: if the final transmission shows the White Tiger, it indicates murder; if it shows the Black Tortoise, it indicates theft; if it shows Gou Chen, it indicates assault and injury; if it shows the Vermilion Bird, it indicates litigation; if it shows the Heavenly Empress, it indicates a woman running away with another man; if it shows Tai Yin, it indicates secret and improper actions. All are judged in this manner.

The chaotic first hexagram (White Rainbow Piercing the Sun)

The "Observing the Menstrual Cycle" divination text discusses the "Disordered Beginning" hexagram, also known as "White Rainbow Piercing the Sun." The Day Stem represents elders and ancestors, while the Day Branch represents younger generations. The elders are placed above the younger ones, yet the younger ones turn around and overcome the elders, hence the name "Disordered Beginning." The elders will inevitably feel humiliated and unable to hold their heads high. The proper respect and propriety within the family are absent, and in legal disputes, one fears the other party has valid reasons and evidence. This hexagram also indicates that the ancestors were originally from another surname, and the previous lineage was actually a son from another family. All instances of the "Disordered Beginning" hexagram indicate a mixture of surnames, with the ancestors definitely having used a false surname. Even if the family is harmonious and peaceful, they will suffer losses and be treated unfairly in legal matters. If the ancestors indeed belong to the current surname, the whole family may still face a lawsuit.

The "Heart Mirror" says: The day stem is placed in the Lodging Palace and added to the day branch, and is then reversed and overcome by the day branch. This situation is called "Disordered Beginning." The day stem represents the superior, and the day branch represents the inferior; when the superior yields to the inferior and is overcome by it, it is called "Disordered Beginning." The image of this divination is: a minister rebels against the king, a son plots against his father, a wife betrays her husband, a younger brother oppresses his elder brother; servants disobey their masters, and a general departs on a campaign but destroys his own horses. The day stem represents the superior, and the day branch represents the inferior. Any act of rebellion is most dangerous in this kind of penal relationship. For example, on a Gengwu day in the month of the Rat at the You hour, Geng is lodged in Shen. The Shen of the Heaven Plate is placed directly on the day branch Wu. The first transmission is thus taken as "Chuansong" (Shen). The reason for this initiation is that the fire of Wu overcomes the metal of Geng. Only this example is given, but other divination methods follow the same principle, and the meaning is clear. In summary, this indicates disorder within the family and is unfavorable. When applied to ancestors, it suggests that the current generation is not the legitimate descendant of the previous one.

Disorder at the beginning refers to the day stem being placed in the lodging palace and then being overcome by the day branch; a赘婿 refers to the day branch being placed on the day stem and then overcoming it. Disorder at the beginning represents a subordinate deceiving a superior, while a赘婿 represents a superior overpowering a subordinate. Both situations are rebellious and chaotic, breaking the established order of hierarchy. If in the chart the heavenly general is also in the positions of卯 or酉, and the riding god is the heavenly empress or liu he, it indicates confusion and disorder in matters of men and women. If further combined with the river魁戌, the heavenly gang辰, and gou chen, there may be indecent and unspeakable events.

Take for example the day Jiashen (甲申): the trigram Yin (寅) is added to Shen (申), on the day Yiyou (乙酉): the trigram Chen (辰) is added to You (酉), on the day Bingzi (丙子): the trigram Si (巳) is added to Zi (子), on the day Dinghai (丁亥): the trigram Wei (未) is added to Hai (亥), on the day Wuyin (戊寅): the trigram Si (巳) is added to Yin (寅), on the day Jimao (己卯): the trigram Wei (未) is added to Mao (卯), on the day Gengwu (庚午): the trigram Shen (申) is added to Wu (午), on the day Xinsi (辛巳): the trigram Xu (戌) is added to Si (巳). There are countless such examples, all following the method of the Day Stem (日干) lodging in the Palace (寄宫) and pressing down on the Day Branch (日支). Another type is called 'Upward Gate Disarray' (上门乱首): the Day Branch is added to the Day Stem instead, and then it overcomes the Day Stem, which is the most disrespectful pattern. For example, on the day Wuyin (戊寅): the trigram Yin (寅) is added to Xu (戌), on the day Jimao (己卯): the trigram Mao (卯) is added to Wei (未), and so on.

The "Disputing Errors" clarifies that when the day stem is in the lodging palace and approaches the day branch, yet is overcome by the branch, it is called "self-induced disorder." When the day branch approaches the day stem and overcomes it, it is called "upper disorder." If this situation also coincides with the initiating transmission, the interpretation becomes more accurate. The day stem is considered superior, like a person's head; the day branch is considered inferior, like a person's feet. The inferior does not follow propriety and causes disorder, hence the term "disorder." If the upper disorder also coincides with the initiating transmission, this lesson is also known as "abnormal lesson."

In terms of divination, this reading indicates that a younger person may harm an elder, subordinates may rebel against superiors, the family may experience disorder and rebellion, and it is not advisable to take any action. The disorder originates from the superior, who has first violated proper conduct, leading to being offended by the inferior; this situation is still relatively mild. However, if the disorder originates from the superior, meaning the superior has not provoked the inferior, yet the inferior dares to rebel, then the situation is more serious.

The calamity originates internally but is triggered externally; military operations are unfavorable for the enemy forces, and it is not advisable to launch an attack; one should only hold firm and defend to resolve the encirclement. If the calamity originates externally but is caused internally, military operations are unfavorable for the main force, and the enemy coming to fight will be slow, with many injuries occurring within the camp. If the lesson includes卯 (Mao) and酉 (You) along with the Heavenly Empress and Liu He, it indicates mixed genders and disorder between elders and juniors. If self-induced calamity is accompanied by all four lessons being lower spirits overpowering higher spirits, it is inevitable that there will be hidden misconduct within the family, causing bad reputation, with misfortunes arising from within.

This lesson may also indicate that the ancestors originally belonged to a different surname. If the riding Heavenly General is the Azure Dragon, it often suggests that the person's intention is about the younger generation being disrespectful and wanting to divide the family and establish a separate household. If the Three Transmissions or the year's destiny contains a deity capable of overcoming the disruptive deity, it is called "suffering door salvation," meaning the calamity can be resolved. There are also three other variations: when the Day Stem's lodging palace is added to the Day Branch and generates the Day Branch, it is called "Yanjian," indicating severe loss of energy and depletion; conversely, when the Day Branch generates the Day Stem, it is called "Fujiu," indicating initial difficulties followed by happiness; when the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch are of the same type and harmonious, it is called "Peiben," indicating mutual support between them.

There is another pattern called "Ling Fan" (Ling Fan): when the day stem overcomes the day branch, but the initiating transmission takes the lesson where the lower deity overcomes the upper deity; or when the day branch overcomes the day stem, but the initiating transmission takes the lesson where the upper deity overcomes the lower deity. When the day stem overcomes the day branch, it is normally upper overcoming lower, yet the initiating transmission takes the lesson where the lower overcomes the upper. When the day branch overcomes the day stem, it is normally lower committing an offense against the upper, yet the initiating transmission takes the lesson where the upper overcomes the lower. Thus, the upper and lower mutually insult and offend each other, hence the term "Ling Fan." In divination, this indicates disorder in hierarchy, with the ruler being arrogant and the subject rebellious, even leading to cases of the ruler usurping the throne or killing the superior. If the first transmission is the official ghost, the misfortune comes particularly quickly. If the overcoming occurs at the lower position, the matter originates from outside; if the overcoming occurs at the upper position, the matter originates from within.

The lesson of the dependent son-in-law.

In a single lesson, if the day stem overcomes the day branch, and the god of the day stem's lodging palace also comes to rest on the day branch and initiates the transmission, it is called the赘婿 lesson. The day stem is like a husband, and the day branch is like a wife. The one overcome by the day stem is the wife's wealth. When the day stem comes to rest on the day branch, it is active approaching the passive, like a man entering the wife's household as a赘婿. When the day branch comes to rest on the day stem, it is passive approaching the active, like a woman following the husband to marry. Both situations involve abandoning one's own place to rely on another, with oneself becoming a赘婿. When this lesson is encountered, all matters are not smooth, living under someone else's roof, with one's body not under one's own control. In terms of the overall hexagram, it belongs to《旅》, which is a lesson about seeking wealth while living in a foreign place.

The interpretation says: one must submit oneself to others and be controlled by others in all matters. Pregnancy is delayed, and those who go out do not return. Seeking wealth and fame may be successful, but illness and legal disputes cannot be resolved. In military matters, it is advantageous to be the guest force; the party that acts first will gain the upper hand. If the day stem is in the lodging palace and added to the day branch, and the day stem overcomes the day branch, this indicates taking the upper position and the man yielding to the woman's side. It is favorable for the elders but not for the younger ones; it is better to take action than to remain inactive. In military matters, it is advantageous to be the guest force, and the party that initiates the battle will win.

If the day branch is added to the day stem and the day stem still overcomes the day branch, this indicates a situation where the smaller overpowers the greater, with the woman moving to the man's household, representing a subordinate defying a superior, and the superior being unable to tolerate it. In military terms, this suggests the guest army turning into the host army, and victory can only be achieved when the enemy attacks us. If this is further combined with the White Tiger, it indicates injury or casualties; if combined with Gou Chen, it indicates disputes and lawsuits; if combined with the Vermilion Bird, it indicates verbal disputes; if combined with Teng Snake, it indicates fear and anxiety. If both the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a state of weakness and decline, the patient's illness will persist without resolution, matching the ominous image of the third line of the Traveler hexagram, "Losing his servant, he remains in danger." Conversely, if the Heavenly Empress is encountered, it signifies receiving grace and favor; if the Nobleman is encountered, it signifies receiving support from superiors; if Liu He is encountered, it signifies private matters; if Tai Chang is encountered, it signifies food and drink. If both the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a state of prosperity and strength, all endeavors will succeed, matching the auspicious image of the second line of the Traveler hexagram, "Obtaining a servant, he remains steadfast."

For example, on the day of Jiaxu with the time of Mao, the method is to use the general Hai (亥) added to the time of Mao. The Heaven Plate gods are each eight positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The lodging palace of Jia (甲) is Yin (寅), and the Earth Plate at Yin is Wu (戌), so Wu is added to Jia. Jia wood overcomes Wu earth, which is the lower god overcoming the upper god, so Wu is taken as the initiating transmission. This is precisely the case where the day stem overcomes the day branch, and the god on the stem is added to the branch, forming the lesson of the赘婿 (赘婿 lesson). The middle transmission is taken from Wu's position at Wu (午), and the final transmission is taken from Wu's position at Yin (寅). The four lessons are Wu added to Jia, Wu added to Wu, Wu added to Wu, and Yin added to Wu. The nobleman is taken as the night nobleman Chou (丑), which falls on the Earth Plate at Si (巳). The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. Therefore, the first transmission is Wu multiplied by Liu He, the middle transmission is Wu multiplied by Baihu, and the final transmission is Yin multiplied by Tianhou. The gods riding on the four lessons are Liu He, Baihu, Baihu, and Tianhou respectively.

For example, on a day with the stem Bingshen, when divining at the hour of Chen, the hour is taken as the general. The Heaven Plate advances nine positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The stem Bing is lodged in Si, and on the Earth Plate, Si is occupied by Yin, making the first lesson Yin added to Bing. On Yin, Hai is found, making the second lesson. On the day branch Shen, Si is found, making the third lesson Si added to Shen. On Si, Yin is found, making the fourth lesson. The third lesson Si fire overcomes Shen metal, with the upper god overcoming the lower god, so Si initiates the transmission. The day stem overcomes the day branch, and the god on the stem also adds itself to the branch, forming the same lesson as the赘婿 lesson. The middle transmission is Yin, and the final transmission is Hai. In this lesson, the nobleman is in Hai, which falls on the Earth Plate's Yin position. The heavenly generals are arranged in order, so Si is riding the sky void, Yin is riding the six harmonies, and Hai is riding the nobleman.

The "Disputations" clarifies that there are two methods of arranging the赘婿: one is when the day stem is in the lodging palace and approaches the day branch, thus overcoming the day branch; the other is when the day branch approaches the day stem and is overcome by the day stem. If this situation also coincides with the initiating transmission, the interpretation becomes more accurate. The day stem represents the husband, and the day branch represents the wife. When the day stem approaches the day branch, it is active approaching the passive, like a man entering the wife's family as a赘婿, commonly called "sitting-in-the-hall赘婿." When the day branch approaches the day stem, it is passive approaching the active, like a woman with her child remarrying, commonly called "following-the-wife-and-child赘婿." Both situations involve giving up one's own position to follow another, with oneself entering as a赘婿, hence called赘婿.

In divination, this chart indicates that all matters will not proceed smoothly, one is living under someone else's roof, and unable to act freely, making it a chart for seeking wealth while being a guest. One must endure hardship and submit to others, being constantly restricted in all affairs. Pregnancy is delayed, illness and legal disputes are prolonged, and those who have left will remain stranded and not return. When the day stem is added to the day branch and overcomes the branch, it is favorable for elders but not for the younger generation; it is better to be active than to be still, and it is favorable for the guest army in military matters. When the day branch is added to the day stem and is overcome by the day stem, it indicates the lower rank offending the higher rank, and the higher rank cannot tolerate it; in military matters, it is also favorable for the guest army. If the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a weak and confined state and are accompanied byInauspicious General, the illness will persist without recovery. If the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a prosperous and strong state and are accompanied by吉将, the desired fame and fortune can be achieved. If the heavenly general is joined withLiu He, it certainly indicates matters related to marrying a son-in-law or entering into marriage.

Ten examples are all cases where the day branch is added to the day stem, each indicating a particular type of matter: On Jiaxu day, when Xu is added to Jia, it indicates matters concerning a woman's clothing; on Jiachen day, when Chen is added to Jia, it indicates disputes and lawsuits; on Yiwei day, when Wei is added to Yi, it indicates disputes over food and verbal conflicts; on Guisi day, when Si is added to Gui, it indicates disputes over clothing and being startled; on Jihai day, when Hai is added to Ji, it indicates a woman being startled and fleeing; on Dingyou day, when You is added to Ding, it indicates separation matters; on Renwu day, when Wu is added to Ren, it indicates disputes concerning property and land; on Wuzi day, when Zi is added to Wu, it indicates a woman falling ill or seeking wealth from others; on Bingshen day, when Shen is added to Bing, it indicates gossip about others; on Xinmao day, when Mao is added to Xin, it indicates damage to wooden objects and financial loss.

If the day stem is combined with the day branch and overcomes the branch, it is called "赘婿" only when the controlling element is in a state of captivity or death, and the heavenly general is Liu He. If the controlling element is prosperous and strong, and the heavenly general is Gou Chen or White Tiger, it is called "残下," which is very unfavorable to the younger and inferior generations. Both situations rely mainly on others' power to accomplish things.

If the day branch is added to the day stem, one must examine the situation of the day branch itself: if the day branch was originally in a difficult and troubled state, then it is forced to go out and suffer along with others; but if the day branch originally had a secure place, how could it lightly abandon itself to rely on others? A gentleman should carefully consider whether it is appropriate to avoid the blame of losing one's integrity. If the day branch is riding on a spirit that is losing its strength, it will certainly not have even a single proper room to live in, and ultimately lacks the appearance of self-reliance. In the above two situations, if the middle transmission shows a saving god that can restrain the day stem, or if the native's year of birth receives auspicious gods and generals, it is then called 'the赘婿 takes power', and can then act freely.

Three additional variations are provided: when the day branch generates the day stem and approaches it, it is called 'Zizai', indicating a state of ease and enjoyment of blessings; when the day stem generates the day branch, it is called 'QiuShou', indicating that the other party seeks from us, and we end up expending our strength; when the heavenly stem and earthly branch are of the same type and harmonious, it is called 'ZhuangJi', similar to two countries cooperating and supporting each other, thus strengthening the foundation.

"The Observing the Monthly Cycle" says: To recognize the赘婿卦 (赘婿 hexagram), one must look at the situation where a person sends themselves to the wife's family. The day branch moves over to add to the day stem, and is then reversed and overcome by the day stem, meaning the concubine will be spoken of as cunning and sly. This refers specifically to the situation where the day branch adds to the day stem and is overcome by it. The upper and lower parts are interconnected, and the person's year of birth acts as an assistant. For example, in the first lunar month, on a Jia Xu day at the卯 hour, the day branch is added to the day stem and is overcome by the day stem, matching exactly. This means on a Jia Xu day with the亥 general adding to the卯 hour, the first lesson is戌 added to甲, with戌 approaching甲 and being overcome, so it is taken as the initiating transmission. This is the case of the day branch approaching the day stem and being overcome. Another example is on a Yi Chou day with the亥 general adding to the寅 hour. The丑 adds to the乙, which is the lower god deceiving the upper god, and this is also the赘婿 hexagram."

This is called the赘婿 hexagram. When someone divines it, upon careful thought, they can only sigh in sorrow. A woman, accompanied by her child, remarries, and from then on, there is no more prosperity or honor. This hexagram signifies either oneself marrying into another family as a male member, or a child who follows his mother to remarry.

The Xin Jing says: A lesson on a赘婿 (a husband who is not the head of the household) may be either the day stem acting on the day branch and overcoming it, or the day branch acting on the day stem and being restrained. This means that the day stem, which is in the lodging palace, acts upon the day branch and overcomes it, or the day branch acts upon the day stem and is overcome by it. The inferior is restrained by the superior, and the superior is in turn restrained by the inferior, so the person loses freedom. This is like a man living in his wife's house, or a woman taking her child to remarry someone else: whatever he wants to do is not under his own control, and he is unwilling yet forced by others. Good fortune or misfortune arises within the family, so we must rely on the heavenly general to determine the cause. For example, on the day of Jiachen in the first lunar month at the hour of You, the branch Chen is added to the stem Jia, which fits this pattern.

The Xiu Zhong Jin text presents both the "Disordered Head" and "Attached Son-in-law" divination lessons: when the day stem is placed in the Lodging Palace and then added to the day branch, and is subsequently overcome by the day branch, it is called the "Disordered Head"; when the day branch is placed on the day stem and is overcome by the day stem, it is called the "Attached Son-in-law." When the upper overpowers the lower, it indicates disorder; when the lower overpowers the upper, it indicates rebellion. The order of respect and hierarchy is thus disrupted.
