Casting the Seal Lesson
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
Whenever the戌 (Xu) is placed over the巳 (Si) in the divination chart and enters the Middle Transmission, it is called the Casting Seal Lesson. The戌 represents Tian Gui, which symbolizes a seal, and the巳 represents Taiyi, which symbolizes a furnace. The辛 (Xin) metal hidden within the戌 combines with the丙 (Bing) fire hidden within the巳, and through the fire's forging, valuable objects are cast, which are referred to as symbols or seals. Therefore, this lesson is named Casting Seal. Those who receive this lesson will obtain official documents and imperial edicts, and their official rank and authority will increase. This lesson is associated with the Dǐng (Ding) hexagram from the Yi Jing, and it belongs to the category of lessons related to alchemy and the creation of elixirs.
The interpretation states: stubborn metal must be cast into seal script, relying entirely on the power of the furnace to achieve success; official rank thus rises, and imperial edicts are repeatedly announced; childbirth and pregnancy are highly auspicious, and meeting noblemen brings good opportunities; common people, however, face inauspiciousness, and there may be illness and official mistakes. If the divination is made on a Wu or Ji day, and the戌 earth is the birth day's seal, and the 'Tai Chang' (a heavenly general associated with ceremonial attire, banquets, seals, and appointments) serves as the sash, then both the seal and the official appointment are complete. In the three transmissions, if the Taichong (Mao) appears as a chariot wheel, it forms the image of casting the seal and riding in a carriage; for matters concerning the imperial examination, seeking official rank, meeting the sovereign, or submitting memorials, it indicates a high rise in official rank, fulfilling one's desires, and receiving the seal, joy, and imperial favor. If further aided by auspicious generals such as the Nobleman, Azure Dragon, Tai Chang, Tai Yin, and Liu He, and if the day stem and initiating transmission are prosperous and strong, it is highly favorable, corresponding to the image of the 'Zhuang' hexagram's upper nine, 'Jade Handle Great Auspiciousness.'
If it is in the spring or summer season, and the day is either巳 or午, or the time is either巳 or午, the fire energy is too strong. If the戌 earth falls into kongwang, or if it is during the month breaker, and both the day stem and day branch have no life qi, it forms an image of a seal being broken or a mold being damaged. If further confronted by a malevolent heavenly general, the matter will first succeed but then fail, with great effort wasted and the outcome unclear. For such a divination, if a common person receives it, it indicates lawsuits, misfortune, and injuries from harm. It corresponds to the ominous image of the ninth line of the fourth hexagram, "The Cauldron's Foot is Broken, The Sovereign's Food is Spilled, Its Form is Soiled."
For example, on a Bingzi day at the hour of Wei, using Zi as the month general: the Zi on the Heaven Plate is added to the Wei on the Earth Plate, making the Heaven Plate five positions ahead of the Earth Plate. Bing's lodging palace is in Si, so Si gets Wu as the first lesson; Wu gets Mao as the second lesson; the day branch Zi gets Si as the third lesson; and Si gets Wu again as the fourth lesson. The third lesson Si is added to Zi, and the Zi water below is overcome by the Si fire above, which is called lower stealing upper, so Si is taken as the first transmission. The middle transmission is Wu, which is the Tian Gui seal; the final transmission is Mao, which is Tai Chang and carries the ribbon, so it is called the casting seal lesson. The first transmission Si carries Tian Kong, the middle transmission Wu carries Teng Snake, and the final transmission Mao carries Tai Chang. Si represents the furnace, Wu represents the seal, and Mao represents the chariot, with the furnace forging the seal and the seal being carried on the chariot, thus forming the pattern, indicating receiving a mandate and promotion in official rank.
The "Ding'E" says: The term "casting seal" refers to the three transmissions being巳, 戌, and 卯. 巳 represents the melting furnace, 戌 represents the seal, and 卯 represents the mold for casting the seal. The metal Xin hidden in 戌 combines with the fire Bing hidden in 巳 to form a harmonious relationship, and after being refined and cast, it becomes a symbol seal, hence called "casting seal." 卯 also represents a carriage, so it is also called "casting seal and riding in a carriage." If this divination is obtained, it indicates that a decree or imperial edict will arrive, and one will achieve high academic success, official rank, and noble titles. It is auspicious to go and seek an audience. If the day is either 戊 or 己, then 戌 earth is the birth day's seal, and if Tai Chang also appears as a sash, it indicates that both the seal and the sash are complete, which certainly foretells a promotion and rapid advancement in official position.
This lesson mostly indicates that matters will succeed slowly, and it is beneficial only for officials. Commoners who divinate this will find it inauspicious, especially regarding illness, lawsuits, worries, and childbirth. For example, in summer, if it falls on a day or time of巳 or午, or if it encounters Teng Snake or Vermilion Bird, the fire energy becomes too strong. If戌 and卯 fall into Kongwang, it results in the destruction of the seal and the damage of the pattern, making promotion in official position impossible. If further encountering a malevolent Heavenly General, it indicates success followed by failure, with efforts in vain. Generally, to achieve a true pattern, the seal and carriage must be supported byThe Post-horse, Sun, and Liu He.
In addition, if on a Bingzi day, the Xu is placed above the day stem and rides on a favorable general, it is also called casting a seal. However, this does not apply to the days of Bing and Ding in spring and summer, as the fire energy is excessive. Nevertheless, it is essential to have generals of metal or fire such as Baihu, Taiyin, Tengshe, or Zhuque in the transmission; if there is insufficient metal and excessive fire, or insufficient fire and excessive metal, the five elements are not complete, and there will be some damage. If the final transmission receives 'Heavenly Empress' (a general associated with private matters and women) or 'Yuanwu' (a general associated with thieves and darkness), and it is located in the亥 and 子 water regions, conflicting with the day stem, it is called an incomplete seal. The person originally hopes for official rank and good fortune, but will encounter obstacles at the critical moment. If the seal lesson also rides on the day's墓, it indicates losing position or the resurfacing of old matters.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" refers to it as "Peng Yi Chong Tian." The rhyme says: Hekui Xu is originally the seal, and when the fire timing arrives, it naturally forms. If Hekui Xu appears in the three transmissions with Xu on the upper position, it is called the Casting Seal Hexagram. The rhyme also says: On Bingzi day in the first lunar month, when casting the divination at the hour of Wu, there is no need to adjust, and if the seal appears in the three transmissions, this is the true meaning of the primary hexagram. When Hekui Xu moves to the position of Si, it becomes the Casting Seal with Seal Hexagram. The following days: Dingmao, Jimao, Jisi, Bingzi, Dingchou, Guiwei, Dinghai, Wuzi, Jichou, Jiwei, Yiwei, Jihai, Gengzi, Dingwei, Renzi, Dingsi, Jiwei, all these days can produce the three transmissions of Si, Xu, and Mao.
The song says: Those in official positions will regain their posts, officials will gain even more honor, and an imperial decree is about to arrive, with heavenly edicts coming along with the post-horse. This indicates that a mission is about to be assigned, with promotion and advancement surely coming to pass. The song also says: For common people encountering this hexagram, legal troubles will naturally come their way. Since commoners cannot bear such an official seal, it instead indicates they will be involved in legal matters.
The book "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: When Wu is placed on Si, and the three transmissions include Mao, Wu is the seal, Si is the furnace, and Mao is the carriage, the three together form the transmission of casting the seal and riding the carriage. If further aided by auspicious generals, it indicates a person in office receiving promotion and advancement; for common people, it signifies involvement with officials and disputes. It also says: Casting the seal refers to Wu placed on Si, that is, placed on the lodging palace of Bing. The three transmissions include Taichong Mao. Wu is the seal, Si is the furnace, and Mao is the carriage, indicating the prospect of official rank and promotion. If Tai Yin and Heavenly Horse are not present, it is not a true pattern; common people who obtain this instead suffer misfortune and are slow in affairs. On days of Bing and Ding in the summer months, if they also have Teng Snake and Vermilion Bird, it is called the seal pattern being damaged, indicating excessive fire energy which becomes an ominous sign.
Divination for Wheel Carving
If the trigram卯 is placed on top of庚 or辛 and initiates the transmission, it is called the Chuo Lun lesson. The trigram卯 represents wood, specifically a wheel, while庚 and辛 belong to metal, representing axes and saws. Wood becomes shaped into objects through the cutting and shaping by axes and saws, hence the name Chuo Lun. Those who receive this lesson will attain high official positions and generous salaries. This lesson corresponds to the body of the Yijing's Yi hexagram, representing the renewal of old things and the creation of new ones.
The interpretation states: Wood must be shaped into objects by the aid of heavy metals; when divining on matters of pregnancy and illness, if the outcome is favorable, there will be joy regarding wealth and happiness, with an increase in official rank and promotion in position. If there is also the presence of the戌 (Xu) as the seal and the Tai Chang as the sash, the result is even more auspicious. The Taichong (Mao) added to the庚 (Geng) is the best, while that added to the辛 (Xin) is next. This is because the hidden 乙 (Yi) wood in the卯 (Mao) combines with the hidden 庚 (Geng) metal in the申 (Shen), thus enabling the creation of valuable objects. If further aided by auspicious generals such as Tianyi, Qinglong, Tai Chang, Tai Yin, Liu He, and by favorable deities such as Yimai and Dehe entering the transmission, one is destined to attain high official rank and reach the level of marquess. If on a壬 (Ren) or癸 (Gui) day, the water deity appears, it signifies a boat or vessel; if the initial and final transmissions contain Tianma, it indicates a carriage capable of carrying heavy loads and traveling far, which brings joy in receiving official appointments. This corresponds to the auspicious image of the "Beneficial to cross great rivers" in the Yijing's Yihou hexagram.
If the Wood of卯 is in a weak and confined position and is combined with the White Tiger, it becomes like a coffin; if it falls into Kongwang, it is like rotten wood that cannot be carved. On the first day of the Jiā stem in spring, when the time is寅 or卯, the Wood is too strong and harms the axe. On the day of Gēng or Xīn stem in autumn, when the time is申 or酉, the Metal is too strong and harms the wheel. These situations are all ominous. For example, on a Xinmao day, if the day stem has a卯, it indicates that wealth comes to the person naturally, and it should be taken quickly; otherwise, the卯 Wood will harm the Wu Earth, causing harm. Similarly, on a Yiwei day, when the Wei is placed on the Yi, it is the same situation, indicating the ominous sign of the initial nine in the Yǐ hexagram, "Observing My Delightful Meal."
For example, on the day of Xinchou with the time of Hai, using Hai as the month general: the Heaven Plate's Hai is added to the Earth Plate's Chen, with the Heaven Plate advancing seven positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The lodgment palace of Xin is in Xu, so Xu receives Si, which is the first lesson; Si receives Zi, which is the second lesson; the day branch Chou receives Shen, which is the third lesson; Shen receives Mao, which is the fourth lesson. Among the four lessons, only the fourth lesson Mao is added to Shen. The metal Shen below overcomes the wood Mao above, which is a case of lower element overcoming upper element. Therefore, the upper god Mao is taken as the first transmission; the middle transmission is the Xu on Mao, and the final transmission is the Si on Xu. The wood Mao is added upon the metal Shen, which exactly matches the meaning of wood being cut by metal, so it is called the Chuo Lun lesson. The first transmission is Mao riding the Black Tortoise, the middle transmission is Xu riding Gou Chen, and the final transmission is Si riding Heavenly Empress. The gods on the four lessons, Si, Zi, Shen, and Mao, ride Heavenly Empress, Tian Kong, Zhu Que, and Yuan Wu respectively.
"The Ding'e says: Zhuo lun, is when Mao is placed over Geng, Xin, Shen, and You, and the transmission begins. Mao represents a cart wheel, and metal is the axe, wood is cut by metal, so it is called zhuo lun. When this lesson is drawn, it indicates a high promotion in office, a symbol of discarding the old and establishing the new; if there is also Xu as the seal and Tai Chang as the sash in the three transmissions, it is even better. Mao placed over Geng and Shen is the best, and over Xin and You is next. This is because the wood in Mao and the metal in Shen combine to form an object. If on a Ren day or Gui day, the water spirit appears, it represents a boat; if the first and last transmissions have the Heavenly Horse guiding, it represents a chariot, both of which can carry heavy loads and travel far, and an appointment is certain. When zhuo lun is drawn, the person's intention is mostly to seek an official position. First, they will undergo some difficulty, but later there will be success—wood fears metal, so it indicates difficulty first, then success. The Heavenly General should have the Azure Dragon, Tai Chang, Tai Yin, or Liu He to complete its essence, and seeking wealth will be greatly rewarded. Someone asked: Why is Yin not counted as zhuo lun? Because Yin is the Heavenly Beam, which is already a finished material, so it does not need to be cut."
This lesson mostly indicates that matters will be accomplished slowly, and it is unfavorable for pregnancy, illness, and lawsuits. If the卯 wood is weak and confined, and also rides the White Tiger, it becomes like a coffin. If it falls into Kongwang, it is like rotten wood that cannot be carved, and one must change occupations. In spring, if the Jia or Yi day meets the寅 or卯 hour, the wood becomes too heavy and harms the axe; in autumn, if the Geng or Xin day meets the申 or酉 hour, the metal becomes too heavy and harms the wheel, both leading to misfortune.
For example, on a Xinmao day, if the day stem is paired with Mao, it indicates that wealth comes to you from yourself, and you should take it quickly, or else the Mao wood will harm the Xu earth, causing you harm. On a Yiwei day, when Wei is added to Yi, the principle is the same. If the three transmissions include the day's墓神 (mound spirit), it is called re-cutting the wheel, indicating that the person's intention is to lose an official position and seek to regain it. Generally speaking, when the wheel-cutting divination is encountered on a wood day, it is difficult; on a fire day, there is illness; on a metal day, one can achieve success and gain blessings; on a water day, the mind is unsettled, and one must go through change and hardship to be satisfied; on a earth day, one will be in constant movement and relocation.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" text refers to this pattern as "Flying Dragon Entering the Deep," and notes that it is to be avoided when divining illness. The verse says: "Cutting the wheel takes the image of completeness, originally arising from Taichong (Mao); Taichong originally belongs to wood, and the wheel is made relying on it—Taichong belongs to the category of boats and carts." It also says: "Forming something requires reliance on tools, and when axes arrive, things become clear. Gengshen and Xinyou are the axes. If Shen is placed on Taichong (Mao), it becomes the Cutting the Wheel hexagram." The verse continues: "At the positions of Shen and You with Geng and Xin, Taichong (Mao) is exactly at the top of the head, cut and injured by the axes, hence the name Cutting the Wheel. On Xinchou day in the first lunar month, at the hour of Chen, no changes are needed, Taichong (Mao) falls on Chuansong (Shen), and the initiating transmission reveals its true nature."
On the day of Xin Chou, the卯 (Mao), 申 (Shen), and 丑 (Chou) refer to the situation where on Xin Chou day, the month general is Hai (Hai), and the class is started at Chen time. The Taichong (Mao) is placed on Shen metal, Shen metal cuts Mao wood, with the lower element attacking the upper one, initiating the transmission. This forms the Zhuolun hexagram, with the three transmissions being Mao, Xu, and Si. On the day of Xin You, the arrangement forms a reverse chant, with the three transmissions being Mao, You, and Zi. Reverse chant refers to the Heaven Plate and Earth Plate's twelve branches each conflicting with each other. According to Weishanren's method, the final transmission is taken as the branch that breaks the other. For the following nine days: Yi Chou, Gui You, Ding Chou, Gui Wei, Ji Chou, Gui Si, Xin Si, Gui Chou, Gui Hai, the third class can form the three transmissions of Mao, Xu, and Si. For the following nine days: Ding Mao, Ji Mao, Yi You, Xin Mao, Ding You, Gui Mao, Yi Mao, Ji You, Xin You, they all form reverse chant hexagrams, with the three transmissions being Mao, You, and Zi, which also belong to the Zhuolun hexagram.
The song says: seeking official position will surely bring salary, and when encountering matters, they can all be handled justly. When doing things, one must first go through some hardship and refinement, and then achieve honor and prominence. What is meant by hardship is that one must first be shaped and refined before becoming a useful person. It also says: do not despise a small position, for those in court will have good brothers to support them. This means that official positions are naturally promoted step by step in the court, and also that one must first exert effort before achieving success. Commoners who cast their divination can also attain official positions; if the Three Transmissions include Tai Yin, Azure Dragon, and Liu He, it is even more favorable.
The book "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: When the trigram of卯 (Mao) is placed on申 (Shen) or酉 (You) and initiates the transmission, it is called the Zhuo Lun hexagram. Gengshen and Xinyou both belong to metal, and are both considered as axes. As long as Taichong (Mao) is placed on top of them, it is considered complete. The trigram of卯 represents a cart wheel, and when it is placed on top of Shen or You, it symbolizes the image of being cut and shaped. If the Heavenly General is accompanied by Qinglong, Tai Chang, Tai Yin, or Liu He, it completes the nature of the trigram. Those who consult this divination often involve matters of being appointed to official positions or engaging in business. On days of wood, there will be difficulties; on days of fire, there will be illness or misfortune; on days of metal, there will be cutting and shaping into useful objects; on days of water, the mind will be unsettled and success will only come after hardship and change; on days of earth, there will be wandering and displacement. If this is consulted during the three months of autumn on Geng or Xin days, and the Heavenly General is accompanied by Tai Yin and Baihu, it is called Zhuo Lun Shang Fu, indicating excessive metal energy. If the trigram of卯 is seated on Kongwang, it is called Xiu Mu Nan Diao, meaning that the wood is rotten and difficult to carve, and it is advisable to abandon the current profession and pursue other livelihoods.
Draw the lesson from the source
Any divination where the two heavenly stems preceding and following the day stem and day branch are used as the initial and final transmissions, respectively, is called an "introduction and following" lesson. For example, on a Gengchen day, if the day stem is on the Chou position, that is the daytime nobleman; the initial transmission is寅 placed on the You position, which is before the day stem, and the final transmission is Zi placed on the Wei position, which is after the day stem. The day stem is thus guided in front and followed behind, called "supporting the heavenly stem," also known as "supporting the nobleman," indicating promotion in official position and the best fortune for all matters. Another example is on a Renzi day, if the day stem is on the Chen position, the initial transmission is Si and the final transmission is Mao, with two noblemen before and after, called "two noblemen guiding and following," indicating support from superiors or joint recommendations from many noblemen to accomplish matters, which is extremely favorable. Another example is on a Jiawu day, where the initial transmission is Zi before the day branch and the final transmission is Xu after the day branch, with both before and after guiding and following, called "supporting the day branch," indicating relocation and construction of the family residence being highly beneficial.
For example, on a Dingyou day, the酉 (You) is the night nobleman who is placed on theLodging Palace (lodging palace) of Ding, while the亥 (Hai) is the day nobleman who is placed on the day branch酉 (You). If the person's year destiny is in申 (Shen), this is when the nobleman is present at both the heavenly stem and earthly branch, with the year destiny in between. This is favorable for seeking help from powerful people, and it is certain that both noblemen will support the matter. The伏吟 (hidden chant) lessons on Ding巳 (Dingsi), Ji巳 (Jisi), and Gui亥 (Guihai) days involve the heavenly stem and earthly branch surrounding the day's禄神 (lucky god), which is suitable for matters concerning salary and food. TheHidden Chant on Gengwu (Gengwu) and Jiyou (Jiyou) days involve the night nobleman being surrounded, while theHidden Chant on Jiazi (Jiazi) day involves the day nobleman being surrounded. All these belong to the category of heavenly stem and earthly branch surrounding the nobleman, which is suitable for seeking help from noble people and making official reports. This is like a nobleman traveling with someone leading the way in front and someone following behind, hence called 引从 (leading and following). It corresponds to the body of the《易经》 (Book of Changes) 涣卦 (Huan hexagram), which represents a carriage and horses with people calling out in front and behind, forming a grand procession.
The interpretation states: When the day stem and day branch are flanked by preceding and succeeding elements, it is a favorable omen for someone in official position, indicating promotion in rank and fame, wealth and honor; when pregnant, giving birth to a handsome child, and marriage bringing a beautiful spouse (the text below "婚招玉" may be missing a character); going out can lead to gaining wealth, and seeking help from the nobleman brings joy. If the day stem and day branch are occupied by the墓鬼 (mound ghost), yet there is a leading and following element, and if there are conflicts and clashes among the stem, branch, and the three transmissions, the凶气 (evil influence) is dispersed, which is most auspicious. Alternatively, if the stem and branch together with the initial, middle, and final transmissions enclose the earth's nobleman, then seeking help from the nobleman and planning matters are also favorable, corresponding to the image of the hexagram "Huan" (Dispersion) hexagram six four "Yuan Ji" (Original Goodness).
For example, on the day of Renzi with the hour of Si, using Xu as the month general: the Xu on the heaven plate is placed on the Si on the earth plate, with the heaven plate advancing five positions ahead of the earth plate. The lodging palace of Ren is in Hai, so Hai gets Chen, which is the first lesson; Chen gets You, which is the second lesson; the day branch Zi gets Si, which is the third lesson; and Si gets Xu, which is the fourth lesson. The third lesson Si is placed on Zi, and the water below Zi overcomes the fire above Si, so the Si is taken as the first transmission. The middle transmission is the Xu on Si, and the final transmission is the卯 on Xu. The night nobleman is on Si and the day nobleman is on Mao. The first transmission Si is ahead of the god Chen on the day stem, leading the way, and the final transmission卯 follows Chen, thus enclosing the god on the day stem in the middle, which is called the two noblemen leading the heavenly stem pattern. The first transmission Si is accompanied by the nobleman, the middle transmission Xu is accompanied by the azure dragon, and the final transmission卯 is accompanied by the tai yin.
"The Distinguished Errors" says: "Yin Cong" refers to something being preceded by a leading element and followed by a following element. If the first and last transmissions enclose the day stem, it indicates receiving assistance and facilitation from others, which is highly advantageous. If two noblemen enclose the day stem, it signifies promotion in official position. If the first and last transmissions enclose the day branch, or two noblemen enclose the day branch, it indicates good fortune for the family and home. If a nobleman is present on the stem or branch and encloses the person's birth year, it indicates receiving assistance from two noblemen. If the stem and branch enclose the day's luck god, it is favorable for matters concerning salary and food. If the stem and branch enclose a nobleman, it is favorable for seeking help from noblemen. Additionally, if the stem and branch together with the first and last transmissions or the middle and last transmissions enclose the earthly noble, it is also considered Yin Cong. All these cases involve a preceding leading element and a following element, hence the term Yin Cong. When this divination is obtained, it is favorable for seeking official position, wealth, travel, marriage, and pregnancy."
The Favorable and Smooth Divination Class
Any divination lesson where the initiating transmission god is born on the day stem, or where the three transmissions successively generate each other until reaching the day stem, or where the day stem and day branch mutually generate and flourish, is called a smooth course. For example, on a Bingshen day, the three transmissions are Shen, Hai, Yin, with the first transmission generating the middle transmission, the middle transmission generating the final transmission, and the final transmission generating the day stem Jia fire; on a Guichou day, the three transmissions are You, Chou, Si, with the final transmission generating the middle transmission, the middle transmission generating the first transmission, and the first transmission generating the day stem: these are called successive generation. This indicates that there will be recommendations from superiors, or nominations by officials, and matters related to documents and petitions can be completed from beginning to end.
On a Xin Mao day, the day stem receives Hai and the day branch receives Chen, which is mutual generation. On a Bing Yin day, the day stem's Yin generates Bing fire, and the day branch's Hai also generates Yin wood, which is mutual generation, indicating harmony and mutual benefit. If there is life qi, both parties can gain profit. On a Jia Shen day, the day stem's You is the strong god of the day branch, and the day branch's Mao is the strong god of the day stem, called mutual strength, indicating mutual support between host and guest, both thriving. On a Ren Yin day, the day stem receives Zi and the day branch receives Mao, which is mutual strength. Sitting calmly brings benefit, and efforts are saved. If something has been lost and one wishes to restore it, or if there is a change of position, it is very satisfactory. Sitting and waiting brings success, and one may receive help unintentionally, leading to prosperity. These are all cases of three transmissions generating each other and the day branch being strong and flourishing, indicating smooth affairs and favorable fortune, hence called smooth and prosperous. It belongs to the body of the "Gradual Progress" hexagram from the Book of Changes, and is a lesson of blessings and honors.
The interpretation says: The three transmissions mutually generate each other, and the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in harmony with each other. Officials receive recommendations and promotions, scholars attain academic ranks and achievements; marriages are harmonious, wealth is generated; in all kinds of undertakings, the nobleman is pleased to accept them. When the three transmissions successively generate the day stem, it is essential that they are in harmony with the day stem, which indicates that even if there are three or four layers of separation, someone above is still recommending you. Alternatively, if the final transmission helps the initial transmission to generate the day stem, it signifies that someone else is secretly helping and praising you. Or if the final transmission helps the initial transmission to transform into the day stem's wealth element, it indicates that someone is secretly providing financial assistance. If the day branch joins the day stem and generates it, this is called the 'Self-Relief Pattern,' indicating that others actively provide support. All cases where the three transmissions generate the day stem are considered very auspicious, corresponding to the auspicious image in the Book of Changes, the second line of the Gradual Progression hexagram: 'The wild goose gradually reaches the stone, with joyous meals.'
If the beneficial influence is passed on but meets with kongwang, month breaker, punishment, control, or harm, and there is no remedy, it becomes a凶 situation, and all affairs will find it hard to succeed. Or if the first transmission benefits the middle transmission, the middle transmission benefits the final transmission, but the final transmission turns back to control the day stem, this is called abundant kindness but deep resentment, and affairs that seem perfect will bring resentment. Or if both the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in a strong position, the禄神 is near the person, but the wealth element in the three transmissions falls into emptiness, then one should not abandon the current situation to seek other actions; if one has unexpected thoughts and plans to travel far, then the yangren becomes a net that binds, leading to disaster. If there are conflicts among the heavenly stems, earthly branches, and the three transmissions, it can be resolved by breaking the net, but if there are no conflicts or controls, it is truly dangerous. This corresponds to the ominous image of the gradual hexagram nine three, "favorable to repel the enemy."
For example, on the day of Bingxu with the hour of Shen, using Hai as the month general: the Heaven Plate's Hai is placed on the Earth Plate's Shen, with the Heaven Plate advancing three positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The lodging palace of Bing is in Si, so Si receives Shen as the first lesson; Shen receives Hai as the second lesson; the day branch Wu receives Chou as the third lesson; Chou receives Chen as the fourth lesson. The first lesson Shen is placed on the lodging palace of Bing, Si. The fire below Si is overcome by the metal above Shen, so the lower element steals from the upper, and Shen is taken as the first transmission. The middle transmission is Hai on Shen, and the final transmission is寅 on Hai. The first transmission, metal Shen, generates the middle transmission, water Hai, which in turn generates the final transmission, wood寅. The wood寅 then turns back to generate the day stem, fire Bing, and this cycle continues until it reaches itself, hence called a smooth transmission. The first transmission, Shen, is accompanied by Liu He, the middle transmission, Hai, is accompanied by Nobleman, and the final transmission,寅, is accompanied by Black Tortoise.
"The Ding'e says: 'Smoothness' means that the heavenly stem and earthly branch are in a flourishing state. This can be when the first transmission generates the middle transmission, the middle transmission generates the final transmission, and the final transmission generates the day stem; or when the final transmission generates the middle transmission, the middle transmission generates the first transmission, and the first transmission generates the day stem. This is called the successive generation pattern. Or when the god above the day stem generates the day stem, and the god above the day branch generates the day branch, this is called the mutual generation pattern. Or when the god above the day stem generates the day branch, and the god above the day branch generates the day stem, this is called the reciprocal generation pattern. Or when the god above the day stem is the flourishing god of the day stem, and the god above the day branch is the flourishing god of the day branch, this is called the mutual flourishing pattern. Or when the god above the day stem is the flourishing god of the day branch, and the god above the day branch is the flourishing god of the day stem, this is called the reciprocal flourishing pattern. All these are signs of smoothness and prosperity, so it is called 'smoothness'. If this divination is obtained, it indicates great good fortune. In the successive generation pattern, one can receive recommendations from people at every level, and the matter will be completed from beginning to end. If the final transmission helps the first transmission to generate the day stem, it indicates that others are secretly helping and praising. If the final transmission helps the first transmission to transform into the day's wealth, it indicates that someone is secretly helping with money. In the mutual generation pattern, people and the house are each peaceful. In the reciprocal generation pattern, they help each other and are harmonious. In the mutual flourishing pattern, affairs are accomplished with ease. In the reciprocal flourishing pattern, both sides mutually seek each other and flourish together."
Fanchang Lesson
Whenever both spouses' annual stems fall in the direction of the moral deity and initiate transmission, it is called the Flourishing Prosperity Lesson. This is because the spouses' 'annual stems' (the annual palace positions calculated according to their respective ages) ride upon the prosperous and strong energy of their own birth stems, and also coincide with the harmonious combination of heavenly stems and earthly branches. Alternatively, their annual stems may be positioned in the currentprosperous and strong earthly branch. In this way, both yin and yang sides gain strength, the qi flows smoothly, and the couple becomes harmonious and affectionate. Their feelings naturally stir, leading to abundant and flourishing offspring. Hence, it is called the Flourishing Prosperity Lesson. Those who receive this lesson will have a thriving population, and their pregnancies will result in the birth of noble children. It belongs to the structure of the Qian (Heaven) hexagram from the Book of Changes, representing the lesson of the union between male and female.
Divination interpretation states: Yin and yang harmonize, thus generating all things; the native's destiny attracts a prosperous son, and the child conceived is certainly male; plans made will bring great benefit, and the family naturally prospers; if there is mutual control, it indicates separation and loneliness. For example, if the husband's native is water and his age is Jiayin, there is water in the Yin position, with water and wood mutually generating; if the wife's native is metal and her age is Jihai, there is metal in the Hai position, with metal and water being suitable. Ji combines with Xi, and Yin combines with Hai, each also riding on the strength of their native destiny. This is called the De Pregnancy Pattern.
If using the birth years of these two people to predict, the wife will surely become pregnant and will give birth to a noble child within a year. If she is already pregnant, and her year pillar is You, according to the method, she will give birth on an Ethylene day in November at some time. A child born from the combination of Jia and Ji will have a yellowish complexion, a strong and solid body, and a love for reading which will lead to officialdom. This corresponds to the auspicious sign of the Qian卦 (Hexagram) in the I Ching: "Smooth, advantageous to be sincere, taking a wife is auspicious." The method to determine the due date: take the heavenly stem at the wife's year pillar and count forward three positions to find the position of Officialdom, which determines the birth month. Then take the heavenly stem that is opposite to this position to determine the birth day, and proceed in order according to the sequence of the ten heavenly stems. For the months of Chen and Xu, use Wu; for the months of Chou and Wei, use Ji (the original text says "Xu" and "Si," but according to the context of the "Prosperous Pregnancy" pattern, it should be "Wu" and "Ji"). Count forward three positions from the Officialdom position to find the position of the end, which determines the birth time. For example, if the wife's year pillar is Shen, she will give birth on the Jia day of the tenth month at the Si hour. The rest follows the same pattern.
As for judging the nature and character of a child: if the couple's ages form the combination of Bing and Xin, the child will have dark skin, a robust and strong body, be fierce and fierce-minded, love military affairs, and thus attain official rank. If their ages form the combination of Ding and Ren, the child will have a bluish complexion, deep and clear eyes, be talented in literature and arts, and thus attain official rank. If their ages form the combination of Yi and Geng, the child will have a pale complexion, be handsome and refined, love music and melody, be skilled in military strategy, and thus attain official rank. If their ages form the combination of Wu and Gui, the child will have a reddish complexion, be broad at the bottom and narrow at the top, love hunting and leisure, and be skilled in techniques and esoteric arts, thus attaining official rank. If the ages fall in a failed position, a dead position, or encounter punishment and harm, it indicates a virtuous pregnancy but no actual birth, corresponding to the hexagram line of the upper sixth in the hexagram Xian, which is "Xian its auxiliary, cheek, and tongue," indicating empty words without substance.
For example, on the day of Renshen with the hour of Wei, using Si as the month general: the Si of the heaven plate is placed on the Wei of the earth plate, with the heaven plate retreating two positions from the earth plate. The壬 (Ren) lodges in Hai, so Hai gets You, which is the first lesson; You gets Wei, which is the second lesson; the day branch Shen gets Wu, which is the third lesson; Wu gets Chen, which is the fourth lesson. The third lesson Wu fire conquers the Shen metal below, so the first transmission is Wu. The middle transmission is Chen on Wu, and the final transmission is寅 on Chen. The husband's age is Jiayin, so寅 gets Zi water, which waters wood; the wife's age is Jihai, so Hai gets You metal, which waters water; Ji and Xi combine, and寅 and Hai combine, and both are in their own birth旺气 (prosperous energy), so it is judged as the Fan Chang lesson, which is also the De Yun lesson. The first transmission is Wu with the Heavenly Empress, the middle transmission is Chen with the Teng Snake, and the final transmission is寅 with the Liu He. The labels 'husband's age' and 'wife's age' on the earth plate diagram are exactly the palace positions where their ages fall.
The song of "Observing the Monthly Cycle" says: To determine the De-Yun hexagram, one should look at the age cycles of both husband and wife. The husband is forty-nine years old, with his age cycle falling on Jiayin; the wife is thirty-four years old, with her age cycle falling on Jihai. This is the method of arranging the Five Phases. The method is: For men, starting from the first year at Bingyin, the full decades are reversed and the remaining years are advanced. At forty-nine, it falls on Jiayin. For women, starting from the first year at Renshen, the full decades are advanced and the remaining years are reversed. At thirty-four, it falls on Jihai.
The song says: The wife's year of Ji combines with the husband's year in theHai Palace (Hai) with Jia, and having a son will have no mistakes — this is because Jia and Ji are harmonious, and寅 (Yin) and亥 (Hai) are harmonious. It also says: This year definitely has a son, and according to reason, there will be no error, which is the hexagram of pregnancy. One only needs to check whether the couple's years are in harmony, meaning the male and female years are compatible. The song concludes by saying: This pattern does not involve the Three Transmissions, so learners need not think about them separately; other examples can be handled in the same way, and one may sing freely.
The song of the "Heart Mirror" says: To determine the fate of a child's conception, one must look at the ten heavenly stems of the person's age. It is still necessary to match the heavenly stems according to the category of Jia and Ji. If the husband's age stem is Jia and the wife's age stem is Ji, then the child is a spiritual embryo, both noble and secure. If Yi combines with Geng, or Bing combines with Xin, it is the same principle.the so-called heavenly stem combination refers to the category of Jia and Ji, for example, if the husband's age stem is Geng and the wife's age stem is Yi, it indicates a conception of fortune and virtue. The month when the child receives its vital breath should be calculated from the god of the wife's age stem. If there is a god on the Wu stem, it should be sought out. The day, month, and hour should all be cross-referenced. The "Zeng Men" says: If the husband and wife's age stems form a Jia and Ji combination, and they are located in the land of virtue gods, their descendants will certainly be prosperous and flourishing.
