Month General
The "Month General" (月将) refers to the palace where the sun is located in the current month, placed at the time of divination to form the Heaven Plate. It is individually called the deity of fortune and virtue, capable of eliminating calamities and preventing misfortunes from intruding. When it is in charge, good things often take time to materialize, while worries tend to be resolved more easily. If it falls on one's birth palace, the effects are particularly evident. If the preceding or succeeding earthly branch of the Month General, along with the Month General itself, coincides with the time of divination, there will be much uncertainty. Retreating to the succeeding branch ensures no disaster, while advancing to the preceding branch brings good news. For example, if the Month General is Zi, then Chou is the preceding branch and Hai is the succeeding branch; encountering these is auspicious. Encountering the preceding branch brings joy, while encountering the succeeding branch brings peace.
Supreme Sovereign of the Year
The current year's star affects the person's destiny, and the matters involved should be carefully examined; if the current year's star falls on the day branch, the head of the family will have health problems. Ordinary people encountering this situation often face difficulties and obstacles; however, those in official positions may instead experience good fortune. When the current year's star is on the day branch, it signifies moving into a new home, indicating instability within the family. Similarly, if the current year's star affects one's own destiny, common people may face troubles from the authorities, while those of higher status will benefit from meeting noblemen.
The god that conflicts with the Tai Su is called the Su Po god, which is most feared when it appears together with Tian Kong and Xuan Wu; in such a case, things will be lost or scattered, and strange events will occur frequently. If this god falls on the day stem and day branch, the prediction will be especially accurate. The god ahead of Tai Su by five positions is called the Su Zhai Jun, and the one behind by five positions is called the Su Mu Shen; if the Teng Snake and Bai Hu bring misfortune to these two positions, there will be calamities and difficulties, the family will suffer, and women and children will not be at peace. For example, in the year of Yin, Wei is the Su Zhai Jun, and You is the Su Mu Shen.
When the Supreme Sovereign and one's destiny meet and are harmonious, the year brings joy; if they mutually suffer the Three Punishments, mutual control, or mutual harm, it indicates misfortune. If the God of Blessing is seen near the Month Builder, the month is safe; if auspicious signs are encountered above the Day Stem, current affairs are orderly. Specifically, if the heavenly spirits above the Supreme Sovereign and one's destiny are mutually generating or form a harmonious relationship, it signifies good fortune for the year; if they mutually harm and control each other, it indicates misfortune for the year. The same method applies to judging the Month Builder.
The year breaker is added upon the month breaker, and when the upper and lower breakers meet, all matters concerning money and property will be lost. At this time, if a favorable general is present, the worries and troubles can still be endured; but if anotherInauspicious Spirit is encountered, it will be even more disastrous. When the month breaker is in effect, relationships between people become discordant, and losses, illness, and disturbances follow one after another. All endeavors will be obstructed and nothing can be accomplished, leaving one helpless. However, only matters concerning resolving grievances can be naturally resolved and settled. The term month breaker refers to the branch that is in opposition to the month builder.
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
The spirits on the day stem and those on the birth stem, if they mutually generate or harmonize, will bring joy and good fortune. If they form the six harms, quarrels and anger will naturally arise. If they form the three punishments, mutual conflict or control, it indicates difficulties. When the day stem and birth stem harmonize, it is a sign of auspiciousness; if the day stem overcomes the birth stem, it indicates favorable events. Conversely, if the birth stem overcomes the day stem, misfortune is expected—this point requires careful examination, as it is deeply profound. If the spirit on the day stem overcomes the spirit on the birth stem, it is a sign of gaining wealth and happiness. However, if the spirit on the birth stem overcomes the spirit on the day stem, it is unfavorable, and all matters will not proceed smoothly.
When theTomb Spirit (mù shén) appears over the day stem and day branch, the patient is unlikely to recover, and misfortune is great. Those who go out will not return on time, and their journey will be long, unless they return home on the day of the divination. For example, if a lesson is cast starting on Gengyin (庚寅) in the first month, the "Daji" (大吉), which is another name for the month general of the twelfth month (丑), is placed directly on Yin (寅), then it is predicted that the person going out will die from illness. If the initiating transmission comes from a distant position that overcomes the day stem, as long as a saving deity controls the official ghost, the situation will turn from worry to joy. The day of Ding (丁) is most afraid of the initiating transmission starting from Zi (子), but if the deity above Ding is Chen (辰), it will turn into a favorable and stable situation. For example, on Dingmao (丁卯) day, when Zi is placed on Mao (卯) forming the "Hao Shi" (蒿矢) pattern, which overcomes Ding from a distance, if Tian Gang (天罡) (Chen) appears on Ding, there is no need to worry.
The Triple Harmony deities are all placed above the Day Stem, and the Day Branch is also examined in the same way. This configuration may indicate harmony and good fortune, or it may relate to marriage, and is most favorable for expecting news. For example, if巳 is added to申, 辰 to酉, or 卯 to戌, these three combinations are all in the position of Liu He; they are auspicious signs for discussing marriage or waiting for news.
The day branch meeting the triple harmony deity indicates matters concerning relatives. For example, if on a Zi day the day branch meets Shen and Chen, it forms the Water triple harmony of Shen-Zi-Chen. However, in the case of the Metal triple harmony of Si-You-Chou, within a year there will certainly be separation from female relatives. Whenever the day branch forms a triple harmony, it signifies the presence of relatives and also indicates the addition of new members to the family. Only the Si-You-Chou triple harmony indicates the departure of a woman.
The trigram of the day branch's triple harmony is used as the first transmission. If it is further afflicted by punishment and harm or restrained, there will be misfortune among close family members. When the Heavenly Empress is in charge, matters concerning female relatives will occupy the mind, indicating that within a year there will be discord. The day branch's triple harmony trigram originally signifies close relatives; if mutual punishment and harm occur, it is a sign that family members will fall ill or suffer misfortune. The Heavenly Empress and Tai Yin indicate matters concerning female relatives and water-related calamities, while the Black Tortoise and Tian Kong signify fleeing or loss.
The day stem, day branch, and the three transmissions all meet the breaking god, leading to financial loss, loss of property, and everything falling through; benefactors cut off contact, relatives become distant, and all affairs go wrong with people not getting along. This is the type of situation seen in a return echo lesson on a Jiashen day. When the breaking god is applied to the day branch and serves as the first transmission, it is mostly because the wife or concubine is not behaving properly at home. The appearance of Tiankong and Xuanwu indicates losses and setbacks, while the appearance of Tengsnake indicates loss and uncertainty. The term "branch breaking" refers to the god that conflicts with the day branch, and it must be the god of the day branch that initiates the transmission. If it is mounted on Taiyin or Tianhou, it indicates misfortune for female relatives and children; if mounted on Tiankong or Xuanwu, it indicates losses and setbacks; if mounted on Tengsnake, it indicates disasters and uncertainty, frequent strange dreams, and signs of servants running away and wealth dispersing.
Divination by Time
When the Nobleman's deity is present, the Initiating Transmission begins from the time of divination. Seeking the Nobleman's dry stem, planning and striving for all matters will succeed. If an ordinary person encounters this, the government will have many joyful events, and seeking wealth or promotion will bring honor and distinction. If the time of divination meets the Vermilion Bird, it symbolizes documents, or seeking to cancel messages, or having someone accompany; if the Vermilion Bird is also in the same palace as Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu (fire positions), then this secret method is indeed valid. When the time of divination meets the Vermilion Bird and is also in the same palace as Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu, it indicates matters related to documents. Within the time of divination, both calamity and auspiciousness are already present. AllInauspicious Sha (malevolent forces) and noble deities must be carefully examined: those that attack the day stem are evil deities, inevitably causing harm; if the day stem's wealth element is accompanied by a favorable general, joy and prosperity will flourish.
Zi
The trigram Zi falls on the earthly branches Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, which are the four earthly positions. If the White Tiger also appears together, the children in the family will suffer from serious illnesses one after another. If the Tai Su is Chou, Wei, or Xu and falls on Chen, the younger generation will face difficulties during this year. Zi represents children, and it is restrained by the four earthly branches of soil. Soil overcoming water, combined with the White Tiger, indicates misfortune for the descendants. If the four earthly branches of soil are exactly the Tai Su and fall on Zi, it indicates that the child will die young during this year.
The trigram Zi is added to Si, indicating the arrival of yang energy at its peak. The water in Zi, which is癸, combines with the earth in Si, which is戊, forming a harmonious relationship between water and earth. If this is accompanied by a favorable general, it will lead to prosperity. However, if it encounters Teng Snake or White Tiger, there will be no auspicious outcomes, even though there is a combination, the wishes will not be fulfilled, and things will become chaotic. Zi represents the beginning of yang, and by the time it reaches Si, it has become six yang, hence called extreme yang. The hidden癸 water in Zi combines with the hidden戊 earth in Si, forming a harmonious relationship between water and earth. If this is accompanied by a favorable general and the Five Phases are in a prosperous state, it will lead to prosperity. If it is accompanied by an unfavorable general, it will turn into misfortune. When Zi combines with Chou, the matter will certainly succeed, and if it meets a favorable general, it will bring even more joy. When a prosperous and strong deity is added and combines with the harmonious deity, both seeking advancement and discussing marriage will succeed. The combination of Zi and Chou is called Liu He, and this harmonious combination is used to initiate the transmission.
Chou
The trigram Chou added to Si with the influence of Liu He and Azure Dragon indicates that a nobleman will recommend someone, bringing benefits from both sides. However, when the yang path reaches its peak, it will decline, and yin will take over. If the useful god aligns with this principle, it may indicate misfortune for the father. Chou is the position of two yangs, and when it arrives at Si, it becomes extreme yang. When yang reaches its peak, yin arises, so the yang path declines and the yin path prevails. If at this time Azure Dragon and Liu He are also present, it suggests secret requests and private prayers. Otherwise, it indicates misfortune for the father.
Yin
The trigram Yin is placed over You and serves as the first transmission. The middle transmission falls on Wei, and the final transmission falls on Zi. This indicates that a traveler from afar is coming, or there will be news or documents arriving. However, if the three transmissions pass through a tomb, although the person may arrive, something will be lost in the process.
Mao Chen
On days of Yi and Geng, when the initiating transmission meets Tiangang (Chen), the Earth Plate also falls on Chen. The hexagram indicates conflict and competition, requiring prior caution or unusual occurrences regarding lost items. On days of Yi and Geng, the hidden stem results in Gengchen, with Chen falling on Yi, indicating loss and contention. The pairing of卯 and子 forms Liu He, transforming into the official ghost of the day stem, suggesting hidden matters both inside and outside.
If the stems Geng, You, and Xin are combined with Yin and Yin is then added to the day stem, illness will come; but if Mao is added to these three, wood will overcome metal, leading to both fame and fortune, and mutual satisfaction. Here, Geng, You, and Xin refer to Shen, You, and Xu. If Yin is added to these three and is accompanied by a malevolent general, it indicates a divination made while illness is present. Both Yin and Mao belong to wood, so why does Yin added to these three indicate illness, while Mao added to them brings benefit? The answer is: Yin is like a large beam of heaven's timber, and when it meets metal, it signifies being cut and broken, hence indicating illness; while Taichong, which is the alternate name for Mao among the Twelve Month Generals, is soft wood, and when it meets metal, it signifies being shaped into a useful object, hence achieving both fame and fortune.
Yin, Mao, and Chen are associated with Hekui (Xu). When Xu is placed on these three, it indicates the image of wine and food. At this time, old matters can bring wealth, but new matters may bring sorrow. If White Tiger is present, it is either a servant fleeing or an illness in the foot. Yin is the original position of Azure Dragon, Mao is the original position of Liu He, and Chen contains hidden Yi wood. Xu contains hidden Xin metal. When Xu is placed on Yin, Mao, and Chen, it signifies wine and food. White Tiger governs illness and roads; Hekui (Xu) governs servants and the foot of the person. Therefore, it is either a servant fleeing or an illness in the foot.
What is the image of Tiangang (Chen) initiating transmission? Revisiting old matters will lead to the gradual elimination of misfortune; the one before You (metal) represents a leader guiding many, with all affairs harmonious. Seeking favors from elders will bring much fortune. When Tiangang initiates transmission, it is favorable for consulting about existing matters; when Tiangang is in charge, it is also favorable to meet important persons. The term "official leader" should be clearly understood whether it carries the image of servants: if someone in official position meets it, it indicates promotion and a flourishing atmosphere; if an ordinary person meets it, it may indicate illness or legal troubles. Do not casually let common people know this. When Tiangang (Chen) overcomes the day stem, it is called "official leader."
Si
Taiyi (an alternate name for Si in the Twelve Month Generals) is placed over Zi and initiates the first transmission. Xu is like the mold for casting seals, and Si is like the furnace for melting metal: those with official positions may be promoted or receive official documents, while ordinary people may face worries or suspicions from authorities. When Si is placed over Zi, it is called the "Seal Casting Lesson," which is favorable for officials but brings worries about official matters for common people. If Si is the first transmission and the person's destiny is governed by the Metal element—since Metal is the thing that Si fire conquers, which represents wealth—this configuration of wealth over destiny is deeply significant: seeking wealth will be successful, and good fortune will follow, with wealth coming to hand without needing further effort. When the first transmission conquers the destiny's governing element, it indicates favorable outcomes for seeking wealth.
Heavenly Stem Geng (庚) and the Nobleman (贵人) with "Dengming" (登明), which is an alternate name for Hai in the Twelve Month Generals (十二月将), form the first transmission (初传). Even if the lesson pattern (课体) belongs to the category of yin and yang not being complete (阴阳不备), the principle remains the same: the upper and lower elements mutually attack each other, and this initiates the transmission (发用), with the divine meaning remaining unchanged, indicating that matters initially lack sufficiency but later become abundant. The position of Si (巳) in the star sequence (星次) belongs to the Double Female Palace (双女宫), while Hai (亥) belongs to the Double Fish Palace (双鱼宫). When these two positions initiate the transmission, there are two things happening simultaneously: whether seeking plans or moving about, they are related to messages and correspondence, and assistance can be received from others in distant places. When Si and Hai initiate the transmission, it indicates two matters starting at the same time, or a longing for messages from intermediaries, with favorable outcomes for matters happening elsewhere—this is essentially a reverse repetition lesson (返吟课).
Wu
"Shengguang" (another name for the noon position of the Twelve Month Generals) overcomes the day stem and rides upon Teng Snake, indicating the scattering of female relatives and matters that are regrettable: either a divorce, or immoral affairs, or else a pregnant woman in the household. The position of Wu represents the beginning of Yin, which signifies the dispersion of women; if divorce does not occur, there must be immoral behavior, or else the pregnant woman lacks propriety.
Shengguang (Wu) initiating the transmission with the Nobleman placed on the Day Branch indicates that the family may make vows and repay deities; on a Xin day, the presence of Wu on Hai is especially close, and this set of teachings passed down by the master is more genuine. Although Shengguang on Hai is a place of virtue harmony, when it comes to marriage, it has an image but not the reality, and the couple cannot be matched. This pattern is called Four Extremes. When predicting illness, it indicates death; however, it can be used to interpret matters of separation and resolution. Wu on Hai is a virtue harmony, although it symbolizes marriage, it indicates failure because Hai is the extreme of Wu. If the initiating transmission falls on the Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, or Start of Winter, and it then overcomes the Day Stem, the patient will die. This pattern is favorable for predicting the resolution of past matters, precisely because it is an extreme.
When the Wu stem is placed on the Hai branch, it reaches the extreme of yin: Shengguang belongs to fire, which corresponds to the heart in the human body. The heart spirit is disturbed by the planet Fluorescent Mars, causing genuine doubts and constant suspicion of calamity, leading to a lack of closeness with others. The Wu branch is originally the place where the first yin begins, but when it reaches Hai, it becomes the extreme of yin. Shengguang, being fire, corresponds to the heart, and when it is placed on Hai, it is overcome by water, causing the heart to generate doubts.
Wei
Shengguang (Wu) and Taiyi (Si) both govern documents and writings: if they initiate transmission or are placed over the native's destiny, and if they meet the Nobleman or Vermilion Bird, there is no need to hesitate. If they meet the Azure Dragon or Tai Chang, the matter can be planned. When Wu is placed over You, auspicious spirits support, so seeking advancement or promotion is hopeful. However, if encountering malevolent generals, there may be strange worries and doubts, with the situation being difficult at first but smooth later. Wu is fire, placed over You metal, fire reaches You which is its dead place, so it must be matters of doubt and fear, but the outcome is ultimately favorable. This pattern is called "Gao Gai Cheng Xuan," indicating that even amidst obstacles, success can be achieved.
Shen (Monkey)
The Moon General is Shen, placed over Si, and it is accompanied by Liu He. This is a situation of Xuantai (a hidden and developing state) combined with Growth, which is a very authentic omen. If Liu He encounters an internal conflict, there will be misfortune and hardship for children and grandchildren, or else someone may propose marriage. Shen over Si indicates Xuantai and Growth, which signifies a favorable omen for marriage. Liu He represents children, and when it is on the position of metal (Shen or You), it indicates internal conflict, which suggests misfortune and illness for descendants. If the person's birth year and destiny encounter "Chuansong" (a term for the Month General Shen in the Twelve Month Generals), or if Chuansong falls in the time of divination, illness will come. If combined withInauspicious General (malevolent generals), the person will become confused and listless. Geng, Shen, and White Tiger all belong to metal, and their position is You.
You (Metal)
The trigram You is placed over Si with Vermilion Bird as the initiating transmission, and also with Azure Dragon and Nobleman accompanying it. In this case, divination concerning seeking the favor of a nobleman, acquiring wealth, and waiting for news will all be favorable. The trigram You over Si with Vermilion Bird is suitable for divining about messages; with Azure Dragon, it is suitable for divining about wealth; and with Nobleman, it is suitable for seeking the favor of a nobleman.
The first transmission or the person's birth year stem if it is on the position of Congkui (You) will cause inner discomfort and much worry and doubt; whether divining about wealth or messages, there may be ominous signs, but as long as it is accompanied by a favorable general, everything will still be appropriate. You is the month builder of the eighth month, with the afflicted position inside and the beneficial position outside. When You is in command, it is the time of severity and killing, with all things withering and insects and birds crying, thus indicating worry, doubt and unhappiness. It is most undesirable if it is accompanied by a harmful general; if it is accompanied by a favorable general, then there will be initial worry followed by joy. The Congkui on the heaven plate belongs to You, which in the zodiac is the rooster. The rooster can announce the dawn and convey messages, so this method of interpretation can be relied upon. When Congkui is on the person's birth year, all matters will be appropriate, and messages will eventually be heard. If the day stem and day branch, the person's birth year, the three transmissions, and the heavenly stem of the year all show You and are accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, it indicates that messages will arrive.
Xu
The person being divined's birth chart shows Hekui (Xu) and Tiangang (Chen). This indicates that the person is definitely going to move to another place. If both Tianma and Yimai (post-horse) are used in the divination, it becomes even more certain. This method can be considered reliable. Tianma starts at Wu from the first lunar month and proceeds in order through the six Yang branches. Hekui, Tiangang, Tianma, and Yimai all indicate movement when they appear in the birth chart. They also indicate movement when they are used as the first transmission.
Hai (Water)
Dengming (Hai) suddenly appearing in the three transmissions indicates that seeking favor from the powerful will surely result in honor and official rank. If Mao and Wei also appear in the three transmissions to form the triple harmony of Hai-Mao-Wei, the matter will not fail, and prayers to deities or relying on others will bring additional blessings. However, if Dengming is harmed or punished, and rides on White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, or Gou Chen, there will be litigation and disputes. At this time, all affairs are like newly sprouted shoots being crushed, plans are difficult to complete thoroughly, and any attempt to act or rely on others will leave the mind uncertain. Hai is a position of self-punishment and also an extremely yin place. If it rides on White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, or Gou Chen, there will certainly be signs of lawsuits. Hai corresponds to the tenth month, which symbolizes the gathering and storing of all things. One can only advance or retreat according to circumstances, but the mind remains unsettled.
The Supreme Deity
The Nobleman is over the native's destiny, bringing extraordinary joy and celebration, with happiness without worry, and all affairs flourishing; even if in a dangerous situation, calamity can be avoided. When seeking the Nobleman, first look at the deity that the Nobleman is riding upon, then compare the deity of the Nobleman with the deity of the native's destiny: if they form the Three Punishments, mutual control, or mutual harm, the matter will not succeed; if they are harmonious, mutually generating, harmonious, or beneficial, then they can be close. If the deity that the Nobleman is riding upon and the deity of the native's destiny mutually generate, harmonize, are beneficial, or harmonious, it is auspicious; if they mutually punish, conflict, break, harm, or control each other, it is inauspicious, and one should not go seeking.
When the Nobleman of Day and the Nobleman of Night are in the native's palace, if one divines at night and the Nobleman of Day is used, it has the same effect. On days of Ren and Gui, using the Trigram Taichong (Mao) as the Initiating Transmission is most favorable, greatly benefiting those seeking the Nobleman. All affairs will proceed smoothly. The position conflicting with the Nobleman is Tian Kong. For ordinary people, encountering Tian Kong means fraud and falsehood cannot take root; for officials, it signifies that official documents will have a beginning and an end, and it is favorable for making recommendations and giving advice, ensuring favorable results. Tian Kong is the god of direct command and official documents: for gentlemen, it signifies benefits in official matters; for petty people, it indicates that they cannot be trusted with others, and is a sign of deceit.
The Five Phases connect from a distance or fall into the place of the moral god, and where the nobleman's affinity meets, they are exactly in harmony. On a癸 day, the shooting arrow pattern uses the Taiyi (Si) direction. Any action or hope can be known as auspicious. When the nobleman is involved, it is generally favorable. On a癸 day, the shooting arrow pattern uses Si as the day's moral god; on a辛 day, the grass arrow pattern uses Si as the day's affinity. Both patterns involve the Taiyi (Si). This configuration brings auspicious results when traveling far and handling affairs.
Teng Snake
The matters governed by Teng Snake are clearly explained here: if it falls on the person's birth stem, the person will be greatly confused; for matters that are very important, there is only a 90% chance of success, and the mind is often uncertain, delaying decisions. If Teng Snake or Black Tortoise is used as the first transmission, there will be daily troubles, which is the same meaning. When Wu is added to Hai, it also conveys the same idea, both referring to the concept of the Five Phases generating and nurturing life. Teng Snake's original position is Dingsi, and Black Tortoise's original position is Guihai; when Si and Hai encounter theFetal Spirit (fetus deity), if a woman divines, it specifically indicates pregnancy. The patterns of Wu added to Hai, You added to Yin, Zi residing in Si, and Mao arriving at Shen all have the same reasoning.
If Teng Snake serves as the first transmission and Black Tortoise as the middle transmission, then we need to check if the final transmission is Azure Dragon. If the initiating transmission falls upon the day branch, the outcome of the matter is determined, often indicating loss of wealth, loss of objects, or misfortune. However, if Teng Snake, Black Tortoise, and Azure Dragon appear together in the three transmissions, it is not considered ominous. Black Tortoise symbolizes a turtle, and along with Dragon and Snake, they belong to the category of scales and shells. The gathering of Dragon and Snake signifies abundant joy. These three generals are essentially one, but they only form a favorable omen when the divination is cast on a Jia day, Wu day, or Geng day, and the course is started in autumn or winter.
Vermilion Bird
The Vermilion Bird conquers the day stem, indicating that matters will be chaotic and unsettled, with difficulties in pursuing affairs or seeking wealth. There may also be interference from women and conflicts that go against reason—this is most clearly described in the Hundred Chapters Manual. If the deity associated with the Vermilion Bird conquers the nobleman, one should not seek help from authority or handle official documents. If the deity associated with the Vermilion Bird conquers the day branch, it can be determined that there will be continuous misfortunes at home, or there will be lawsuits between family members. This method is subtle and profound. When the Vermilion Bird is on卯 and over 申, it often indicates that information is still on the way. If the three transmissions are harmonious, there will be a chance of success, and someone will come to inquire at the door, confirming that the message has arrived. The Vermilion Bird governs messages, and卯 also governs messages; when卯 is placed over 申, which is a dead position, it paradoxically indicates that the information will arrive.
The person being divined sees the Vermilion Bird in their native stem. This symbolizes documents and messages. If the Vermilion Bird is prosperous and strong and also generates the native stem, then wherever it meets, things will go smoothly. The Vermilion Bird over the native stem indicates documents and messages. However, if it conflicts, is harmed, clashes, breaks, or harms the native stem, then the news will be bad, and nothing will succeed. If it generates, harmonizes, forms virtue, or is like and harmonious with the native stem, then it will be auspicious.
Gou Chen
When the Gou Chen appears in the initiating transmission or in the native's chart, all matters will be delayed and obstructed, with grievances difficult to express. Alternatively, it may indicate indecision and divided intentions in matters. All secret manuals agree on this. If Gou Chen appears in both the initiating transmission and the native's chart, it suggests that the person involved is hindered and delayed, with matters concerning two sides and worries on both ends. It also indicates that when seeking advice or assistance, there are hidden intentions in the mind.
Azure Dragon
Divination for wealth is most important when considering the Azure Dragon. If the Azure Dragon initiates the transmission or is placed in the native's palace, and if it is prosperous and strong at that location, it indicates abundant wealth and good fortune. The Azure Dragon represents the god of wealth. If it appears in the day stem, day branch, three transmissions, the year's native, or the time of divination, it signifies wealth. If it is even more prosperous, it is even more auspicious. When the Azure Dragon appears at the place of growth in the Five Phases, wealth will be smooth and all matters will be harmonious. For example, on a壬 or癸 day, encountering申, which is the water's growth, is favorable. For丙 or丁 days, which belong to fire, encountering 'Gongcao' (another name for寅 in the Twelve Month Generals, which is the fire's growth) is also favorable. However, if the Azure Dragon acts as an official ghost or is in a tomb, it may instead indicate illness and suffering.
