Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

The "Disputations" lists the eight obstacles again: the death qi of the season is taken as the initiating transmission, which is the first; the initiating transmission is suppressed by the flourishing qi on the earth plate, which is the second; in the interaction between upper and lower, there is a hill tomb and a hostile relationship, which is the third; riding on aInauspicious General, which is the fourth; accompanied by punishment, which is the fifth; the lower element attacks the upper, which is the sixth; encountering spirits associated with graves and mourning, which is the seventh;Inauspicious Spirit appear on the day stem and day branch, which is the eighth. These eight are all signs of obstruction and trouble, hence called the eight obstacles. If one encounters the eight obstacles, all affairs are ominous: the illness is severe, legal troubles may lead to imprisonment or death, and all endeavors will fail.

This divination lesson uses Xiaoji (another name for Wei) placed on Yin as the initiating transmission to count eight misfortunes. In spring, the earth element is in a dead position, and the initiating transmission is exactly the death qi, which is one misfortune. The earth of Wei sits on Yin, where the wood qi in Yin is strong and overcomes the earth, which is two misfortunes. The burial place of wood is in Wei, looking up sees one's own grave, and the earth on the grave fears being overcome by wood, looking down sees enemies, which is three misfortunes. The first transmission is occupied by the Vermilion Bird, which is four misfortunes. The Vermilion Bird is combined with a crime, which is five misfortunes. The middle transmission has Zi placed on Wei, with the lower element overcoming the upper, which is six misfortunes. Zi is in the Emptiness mansion and shares the position with the White Tiger, which is seven misfortunes. Wu is placed on Gui with aInauspicious General (malevolent general) Teng Snake, and the lower element again overcomes the upper, which is eight misfortunes. Whenever eight misfortunes occur, there must be a prosperous and strong element and a good omen to generate and support it in order to be saved. If the good fortune is strong enough to match the misfortunes, the calamity will gradually disappear, the illness will recover, and the legal case will be resolved properly.

The Mind Mirror

The Xin Jing says: The eight misfortunes and five blessings should be considered together to determine good or bad fortune; it entirely depends on the diviner's careful inquiry, as there are no fixed rules. What needs to be distinguished is whether the evil aspects are weak and the good aspects are strong; if not viewed this way, then the "eight misfortunes and five blessings" are merely empty phrases. The specific method is: count each unfavorable factor, such as conflict, destruction, weakness and confinement, punishment, tomb, and killing, along with the evil generals they are riding upon, to determine how many misfortunes there are in total. Then check whether there is prosperous and strong energy, mutual generation, and auspicious spirits to rescue the situation, and weigh whether the blessings are sufficient to counterbalance the misfortunes. When the power of blessings and the difficulties are balanced, calamities will gradually subside, illness will recover, and legal disputes can be resolved properly.

Invasion lesson.

Whenever the day stem and day branch form the Six Harm relationships with each other, and both are taken as the initiating transmission along with the year stem, it is called an injurious lesson. "Six" refers to the six relations: father, mother, elder brother, younger brother, wife, and son. "Harm" means injury. Taking the example of the zodiac sign zi (rat): zi is most afraid of wu (horse) which directly confronts it, causing a direct conflict in the heart and chest. Wei (earth dog) combines with wu, which is like helping the enemy, so when zi meets wei, it becomes harmful. The image of being harmed is like a blocked water channel or blocked blood circulation, causing obstacles everywhere. The pairing of zi and wei is called a powerful harm: when zi is placed on wei, things start well but end badly, and there may be legal troubles and disputes. When wei is placed on zi, plans are obstructed and there may be disasters. The pairings of chou (ox) and wu (horse), and mao (rabbit) and chen (dragon) are called lesser harm to the elder: when chou is placed on wu, there may be official matters, illness, worry, and marital discord. When wu is placed on chou, things are unclear and cannot be completed. When mao is placed on chen or chen is on mao, there is usually false rumors and obstacles in financial matters.

The pair of寅 and巳, and the pair of申 and亥, belong to the category of competing and striving, which causes harm. When寅 is placed above巳, it indicates that going out or changing travel plans will be disadvantageous, and returning is more favorable, while moving forward meets obstacles. When巳 is placed above寅, it suggests difficulties and obstacles in affairs, disputes, and uncertainty in mind. When申 is placed above亥, the matter starts off favorable but later doubts arise and obstacles occur, resulting in something begun but not completed. When亥 is placed above申, the plan fails to succeed, also resulting in something begun but not completed. The pair of酉 and戌 belongs to the category of ghostly harm. When酉 is placed above戌, it indicates that a female relative may suffer from a sudden illness or escape, with a dangerous condition. When戌 is placed above酉, there will be continuous obstacles and also incidents of illness or misfortune. This type of harmful deity specializes in mutual damage, hence it is called harmful. This lesson belongs to the卦体 of《损》, indicating a situation where one should be cautious of others scheming behind the scenes.

The interpretation states: among the Six Relations there is a lack of support, and family members injure each other; seeking wealth and profit should beware of slander and harm; besides illness, there is also the injury of being beaten; when seeking marriage, it will be disrupted by others, and when going to battle, the army will suffer misfortune; if pregnant, there is a risk of miscarriage, and seeking an audience with a superior will not be smooth. If the Six Harmful Spirits are present on the Day Stem and Day Branch and are taken as the Initiating Transmission, and are accompanied byInauspicious General (malevolent generals) and恶杀 (evil killings), it indicates serious loss and misfortune, corresponding to the image of the 9th line in the second position of the《Loss》hexagram, which warns of danger from rash action. If the lesson contains combinations, virtues, and benevolent deities along with auspicious generals, then although the lesson pattern may have obstacles, the matter will eventually succeed, corresponding to the image of the 9th line at the top of the《Loss》hexagram, which suggests that going forward is appropriate.

On the day of Bingzi with the hour of Shen, using the general of Mao, the day branch Zi forms a six harm with Wei, and Wei is placed on Zi and taken as the initiating transmission, so it is determined as an injury lesson. The four lessons, from right to left, are: Zi over Bing (the lodging palace of Bing is Si), Wei over Zi, Wei over Zi, and Yin over Wei, successively multiplied by Teng Snake, Tai Chang, Tai Chang, and Liu He. On the earth plate at the position of Chen, the heaven plate亥 is noted with a 'Gu' character, indicating that the nobleman is directly present there. The three transmissions, from top to bottom, are Zi, Wei, and Yin. The day branch is directly overlaid by the harmful deity, so it is judged as a lesson of mutual damage and hidden injury.

"The Rectification of Errors"

"The Ding'e says that in the case of injurious divination: the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the day, when their injurious forces are added together above and below, are taken as the initiating transmission. If this is also present on the year pillar, the prediction will be more accurate. The six injurious pairs are divided into four categories: Zi and Wei are the dominant injury; Chou and Wu, as well as Mao and Chen, are the minor overpowering injury; Yin and Si, as well as Shen and Hai, are the competitive strength injury; You and Xu are the ghostly injury. These six pairs of injurious forces can each cause injury and damage, so they are called injurious."

The "Crime and Injury" divination lesson.

Whenever the three punishments are involved in a divination and the initiating transmission is taken from the punishing god, and this god also coincides with the year of birth, it is called a lesson of injury. Among all the evil omens, none is more severe than the punishment. Punishment signifies injury. Let us first discuss the group of寅,巳,申:寅 contains wood and fire,巳 contains earth and metal, and申 contains metal and water. These are originally in a relationship of mutual generation as father and son, yet they are placed together to mutually harm each other, hence called the ungrateful punishment. When寅 punishes巳, it indicates obstacles in movement and troubles with official matters; if the other party punishes me, there will be disputes and old matters will resurface. When巳 punishes申, it indicates disorder in the relationship between elders and juniors, with initial offenses followed by success; if the other party punishes me, it may instead help me resolve difficulties, and enemies may show kindness. When申 punishes寅, it indicates that the person and the ghost both cause harm, with men and women restraining each other; if the other party punishes me, I will have to take action.

Now discussing the group of Chou, Xu, and Wei: all three are earth elements, like brothers fighting with strength, so it is called恃势刑. Chou harms Xu, indicating interference by officials or spirits, imprisonment, and the powerful oppressing the weak, causing confusion and disorder. Xu harms Wei, indicating the inferior harming the superior, leading to misfortune in marriage and finances. Wei harms Chou, indicating discord among family members, possibly even death and mourning. The group of Zi and Mao consists of water and wood, which should be mother and child in mutual generation, but they harm each other against the natural order, so it is called无礼刑. Zi harms Mao, indicating family disorder, decline, death, and lack of harmony between superiors and inferiors. Mao harms Zi, indicating a shift from the open to the hidden, blocked waterways, and improper behavior by children.

The branches Chen, Wu, You, and Hai are considered self-punishment. The reasoning is as follows: The group of branches Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are mutually opposing, but Hai has nothing to punish; the group of branches Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are opposing, but Chen has nothing to punish; the group of branches Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are opposing, but You and Wu also have nothing to punish, leaving only Zi and Mao to mutually punish each other. Since these four branches have nothing to punish, they must punish themselves, hence the term self-punishment. This type of divination indicates a person who is self-conceited, trying to elevate their status, and constantly changing their mind, ultimately harming themselves. These branches suffer from the influence of opposition and lack a complete element, making them incomplete, crooked, and unbalanced. The three branches are unable to align properly, so they use punishment as a substitute for punishment, leading to self-inflicted punishment. Since there is punishment, there must be injury, so this divination is called injury. If one is looking for a runaway servant, simply observe where the punishment branch falls in relation to the day branch; pursuing in that direction will surely lead to capturing the person. This divination corresponds to the hexagram "Strife," indicating a situation where there is discord between superiors and inferiors, and between sizes and ranks.

The interpretation says: If the divination chart is crooked and the deities lose their proper positions, the family will not flourish; there is a risk of miscarriage in pregnancy, and marriages will not result in good relationships. Going on military campaigns downward may be smooth, but fighting upward will lead to injuries. All endeavors will be awkward, and everything will bring misfortune. If the刑神 (injurious deity) is taken as the initiating transmission, or if the刑神 are mutually involved, and aInauspicious General (malevolent general) is present on the day stem or day branch, the person will suffer injuries and have discord among people. If the刑 falls on the day stem, it harms the male and is unfavorable for the person; if it falls on the day branch, it affects the female and causes instability in the household. If the刑 is on the day stem during the time of divination, there will be worries about children and servants, and current affairs will not go smoothly. If a benevolent deity injures an evil deity, there is no need to worry, but if an evil deity injures a benevolent deity, misfortune is certain. If the刑 is on the month builder, one should not engage in lawsuits. If the刑 is on the day branch, one should not travel far. The刑 on the day stem will have a quick effect, while the刑 on the day branch will have a slower effect. If there is mutual刑 between upper and lower positions and the day stem's official ghost is involved, both public and private matters will be chaotic, with confusion between hierarchy, everything will be awkward, and efforts in planning will be wasted, especially needing to be cautious of small people.

If the Teng Snake appears, along with the Blood Branch and Blood Taboo, pregnant women will certainly miscarry and suffer from blood-related calamities. If the辰 (Chen) is involved in self-punishment and is also occupied by a malevolent general, the person will be easily angered, and may cut themselves with a knife. If among the four lessons and three transmissions there is a god that forms self-punishment on the day branch, and at the same time it is the official ghost of the day stem, and it connects into the three transmissions, this is called the ghost assisting punishment. If this is further combined with the defeat of the virtue god, the situation will be extremely dangerous, corresponding to the ominous image of the upper ninth line of the "Strife" hexagram, which describes receiving a royal robe but being stripped of it three times within a single day. Conversely, if a virtuous god and a favorable general are encountered and there is strength, although there may be obstacles, the matter will eventually succeed.

On a Gengwu day at the寅 hour, using the子 general, the day branch 午 is the trampling god of the day stem Geng, and it is located above the day stem, thus being selected as the initiating transmission. The four lessons are arranged from right to left as: 午 added to Geng (the lodging palace of Geng is 申), 辰 added to 午, 辰 added to 午, and 寅 added to 辰, each successively multiplied by Teng Snake, Liu He, Liu He, and Azure Dragon. The three transmissions are arranged from top to bottom as 午, 辰, and 寅, each transmission noting the hidden stem and the celestial general it is multiplied by: 午 pairs with Geng and is multiplied by Teng Snake, 辰 pairs with Ren and is multiplied by Liu He, and 寅 pairs with Bing and is multiplied by Azure Dragon.

When divining about theft or the disappearance of men or women, only the concepts of punishment (刑) and virtue (德) are considered. For persons of high status, virtue is used to determine the matter, while for those of low status, punishment is used. Therefore, the method of punishment and virtue (刑德格) was established. The location of punishment is as follows: on days of寅, 午, and 戌, punishment is located in the direction of巳, 午, and 未; on days of申, 子, and 辰, punishment is located in the direction of寅, 卯, and 辰; on days of巳, 酉, and 丑, punishment is located in the direction of申, 酉, and 戌; on days of亥, 卯, and 未, punishment is located in the direction of亥, 子, and 丑. The location of virtue is as follows: on 甲 day and 己 day, virtue is located in 寅; on 乙 day and 庚 day, virtue is located in 申; on 丙 and 辛 day, and 戊 and 癸 day, virtue is located in 巳; on 丁 day and 壬 day, virtue is located in 亥. For yang stems, virtue is located at their own position; for yin stems, virtue follows the yang stem. When divining about servants or subordinates, look for punishment. If virtue is stronger than punishment, the person is more likely to be found; if punishment is stronger than virtue, the person is less likely to be found. If virtue and punishment do not mutually control each other, refer to the method described in the section on closed-mouth lessons (闭口课). For ordinary people, only take the virtue god and punishment god from the Heaven Plate and determine where they fall on the Earth Plate, thereby distinguishing whether the person is of high or low status and in which direction they have gone.

For example, on a Gengzi day at the hour of Xu, using the hour animal Hai, asking about a runaway servant. The trampling god of the day branch Zi is Mao. The Heaven Plate Mao is placed on the Earth Plate Yin. Yin belongs to the Northeast, so it is predicted that he went to the Northeast. Pursuing him can lead to his capture; the key to the prediction lies in the trampling god being restrained — Geng belongs to metal, and Mao belongs to wood, metal can control wood, so the trampling god is subdued. If the subject is a nobleman or a gentleman, then we look at the virtue god instead: the virtue of Geng is Shen. The Heaven Plate Shen is placed on the Earth Plate Wei. Wei belongs to the Southwest, so it is predicted that he went to the Southwest. Going to look for him can lead to his discovery; the time of verification is on the day or hour when the virtue god is nourished. Combining these two lines together forms what is known as the virtue and trampling pattern.

For example, on a Gengzi day at the hour of Xu, using the hour animal Hai, the question is about a runaway servant. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are: Wei added to Geng (the lodging palace of Geng is Shen), Wu added to Wei, Hai added to Zi, and Xu added to Hai, in sequence multiplied by Nobleman, Teng Snake, Tai Chang, and Black Tortoise. The three transmissions, arranged from top to bottom, are Xu, You, and Shen: the first transmission is Xu multiplied by Black Tortoise, the middle transmission is You multiplied by Tai Yin, and the final transmission is Shen multiplied by Heavenly Empress. It should be noted that the Heaven Plate in this chart is one position behind what is mentioned in the text, actually equivalent to Xu as the hour animal added to Hai as the hour, slightly differing from the previous statement of 'Xu hour with Hai as the hour animal,' but it is retained as per the original engraving without alteration.

The explanation of the Xingde grid in the essay "Ding'e" is the same as the previous discussion and does not introduce any new meaning.

The second type of divination lesson.

Any divination using the four central branches, namely Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, along with the four cardinal days or four balanced days, and if the day mansion or month mansion falls on the position of the four central branches, and the Tiangang falls on Chou or Wei, it is called the lesson of two disturbances. The four central branches refer to the four branches Zi, Wu, Mao, and You. The day mansion refers to the palace deity where the sun's path lies. It starts at Hai in the first month and counts backward through the twelve earthly branches. The month mansion refers to the palace deity where the Tai Yin star's path lies. In the first month, it starts at Shixu, then in the second month at Kui, third month at Wei, fourth month at Bi, fifth month at Can, sixth month at Gui, seventh month at Zhang, eighth month at Jiao, ninth month at Di, tenth month at Wei, eleventh month at Dou, and twelfth month at Xu. On the first day of each month, it moves to the next mansion, then counts forward through the twenty-eight mansions day by day. When encountering Kui, Zhang, Jing, Yi, Di, or Dou, an extra day is added, and the count continues until the day of divination. The mansion where it stops is the palace deity where Tai Yin is located. For greater accuracy, one should refer to the detailed degrees in the Seven Planets Calendar.

The so-called "斗罡" refers to the branch "Chen," also known as "Tiangang." The so-called "four cardinal points" refer to the days of new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter: the first day of the month is the new moon, the eighth day is the first quarter, the fifteenth day is the full moon, and the twenty-third day is the last quarter, with the end of the month being the "hui" day. The so-called "four pings" are actually the four central branches: Zi Ping Mao, Mao Ping Wu, Wu Ping You, and You Ping Zi. If the sun and moon pass through the central branches and accumulate a great amount of degrees, staying there, and if theInauspicious Spirit "Tiangang" is connected to the branches "Chou" and "Wei," making the nobleman unable to manage affairs, then the three luminaries, sun, moon, and stars, become obscured, and the virtue energy is closed within, while the penal energy is revealed outside. When both "heavenly turmoil" and "earthly turmoil" occur together, it is called "two turmoils." This results in calamity for the person consulting the divination. This lesson belongs to the hexagram "Mingyi," which represents a path full of thorns and difficulty in moving forward.

The interpretation states: A man encountering Heavenly Distress will face punishment and death; a woman encountering Earthly Distress will suffer from hidden venomous afflictions. When going to war and encountering the White Tiger, there will be casualties; when illness arises, crying and lamentation are inevitable. Legal cases and imprisonment will result in exile or military service, and a pregnant woman will not be able to carry her child to term. In interpreting this, one must also examine the accompanying Heavenly General: riding the Teng Snake indicates worry and fear, riding Gou Chen indicates disputes and legal troubles, riding Heavenly Empress, Liu He, or Tai Yin indicates hidden matters and unclear affairs, while riding the White Tiger indicates death or loss. When both Heavenly and Earthly Distress occur together, both men and women will suffer. Only during spring and summer can lives be preserved, but in autumn and winter death is certain. In such times, it is advisable to stay at home and avoid travel or seeking help from others; any plans or actions will surely bring misfortune. The hexagram Mingyi represents a situation where light is harmed, and the sixth line moves from light to darkness to the extreme, corresponding to this divination's image of rising first to the heavens, then falling to the earth, and finally losing the established order, which is ainauspicious sign.

On the 3rd day of the 9th lunar month, on the day of Bingwu, at the hour of午, a divination is made using the hour stem of卯. The person asking the question is of the zodiac sign寅, and their current age is in the sign午. The month general for this month is exactly the same as the day's mansion. The sun is at the second degree of the root mansion, and the moon is at the fifth degree of the root mansion. Both the sun and the moon are in the mansion of卯, with卯 placed on午, which is the central position. The star辰, representing the斗罡, is located on未. Both the heavenly and earthly disturbances are present, hence this is called a two disturbance lesson. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are:寅 placed on丙 (the lodging palace of丙 is巳),亥 placed on寅,卯 placed on午, and子 placed on卯, each successively multiplied byLiu He, nobleman, Gou Chen, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions, from top to bottom, are子,酉, and午: the first transmission is子 with Teng Snake, the middle transmission is酉 with Tai Yin, and the final transmission is午 with White Tiger.

Whenever the solar term is located at the four central positions, and the Tiangang is also on Chou or Wei, it is called the Tianfan pattern, which indicates a man will break the law. Men should avoid Tianfan, especially when it coincides with the new moon, full moon, upper and lower crescents, or the last day of the month. If this occurs in spring or summer, and the man's age and the solar term are aligned at the same position, and it is on Mao or Wu, he will be arrested by the authorities, subjected to interrogation, suffer injuries, or face imprisonment or exile. If it occurs in autumn or winter and is on You or Hai, he may suffer from weapons, die violently, and be buried hastily. Whenever the lunar term is located at the four central positions, and the Tiangang is also on Chou or Wei, it is called the Difan pattern, which indicates a woman will suffer misfortune. Women should avoid Difan, especially when it conflicts with Zi, Wu, Mao, or You. If this occurs in spring or summer, and the woman's age and the lunar term are aligned at the same position, and it is on Mao or Wu, she will face difficulties in childbirth, blood loss, or disputes. If it occurs in autumn or winter and is on You or Hai, she may suffer injuries, experience mourning, commit crimes, or even die.

Another example: On the fifteenth day of the third month, at the Zi hour of the Jimao day, using the You general. For a male's age, the year pillar is in Zi, and the day's host You combines with the age pillar and falls on Zi, which is the central position, with the Tiangang under it connected to Wei, thus forming the Heaven Troubled pattern. For a female's age, the year pillar is in Wu, and the month's host Mao combines with the age pillar and falls on Wu, also the central position, with the Tiangang under it connected to Wei, thus forming the Earth Troubled pattern. The four lessons, from right to left, are: Chen added to Ji (Ji's lodging palace is Wei), Chou added to Chen, Zi added to Mao, and You added to Zi, successively multiplied by Tai Chang, Azure Dragon, Gou Chen, and Teng Snake. The three transmissions, from top to bottom, are Zi, You, Wu: the first transmission Zi is occupied by Gou Chen, the middle transmission You is occupied by Teng Snake, and the final transmission Wu is occupied by Tai Yin. Outside the board, there are two annotations, "female year" and "male year," indicating the positions of the female's age in Wu and the male's age in Zi. The special aspect of this lesson is that both male and female are affected simultaneously: the day's host and the month's host each fall on the central position, and the Tiangang is also connected to Wei, thus both Heaven Troubled and Earth Troubled patterns appear, and both male and female will face calamities. In the square diagram of the heaven and earth plates, the earth plate's Si position is occupied by the heaven plate's Yin, followed in order by Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, and Chou, which is exactly the pattern formed by the You general added to the Zi hour. In terms of interpretation, the male side should be cautious of troubles involving government interrogation and imprisonment, while the female side should be cautious of difficult childbirth and bloodshed from disputes and lawsuits.

"The Rectification of Errors"

The "Order of Errors" defines the two troubles as follows: when the sun's position is in the central position and the Tiangang is attached to Chou or Wei, it is called the heavenly trouble; when the moon's position is in the central position and the Tiangang is attached to Chou or Wei, it is called the earthly trouble; when both the sun and moon are in the central position and the Tiangang is attached to Chou or Wei, it is called the heavenly and earthly double trouble. The sun's position refers to the movement of the sun, which starts from Hai in the first month and moves backward through the twelve earthly branches. The moon's position refers to the movement of the moon, which starts from Shixu on the first day of the first month, then moves to Kuixu on the first day of the second month, Wei on the third, Bi on the fourth, Can on the fifth, Shen on the sixth, Zhang on the seventh, Jiao on the eighth, Di on the ninth, Xin on the tenth, Dou on the eleventh, and Xu on the twelfth. After that, it moves to one mansion each day. If it encounters the mansions Kuixu, Jing, Zhang, Yi, Di, or Dou, it should stay an extra day and recalculate, continuing until the day of the divination, thus determining where the moon's position stops.

The Zi, Wu, Mao, and You hours are the gateways between heaven and earth, the extreme borders of the four directions. The sun and the Tai Yin are most忌 to be at these four places. The Chou and Wei are the first two positions where the Nobleman begins. Once the Tiangang, aInauspicious Spirit, is on top, the Nobleman cannot act. Thus, all the gates are closed, the three lights of sun, moon, and stars become obscured and unclear. The virtue energy is trapped inside and cannot come out, while the punishment energy is outside and cannot be blocked. Heaven and earth are overturned, and worries and troubles are at their worst, hence it is called the two troubles.

The divination shows two troubles, indicating extreme misfortune: during spring and summer people may still survive, but during autumn and winter death is certain; all kinds of troubles and calamities just disperse and come again, and will even involve descendants; what was originally joyful turns into anger, and what was already resolved rekindles enmity; even with auspicious deities, it cannot be saved. If the day star is located on卯 or 午, it is the heavenly trouble of spring and summer, and men will suffer from corporal punishment, imprisonment, or exile; if located on 酉 or 子, it is the heavenly trouble of autumn and winter, and men will commit crimes involving weapons or legal punishment, and after death will not be buried. If the moon star is located on卯 or 午, it is the earthly trouble of spring and summer, and women will suffer from difficult childbirth and may bleed to death due to disputes and lawsuits; if located on 酉 or 子, it is the earthly trouble of autumn and winter, and women will commit serious crimes or be killed by men. If the years of the man or woman coincide exactly with these positions, the prediction will be especially accurate. If the moon star also coincides with the several stars that require a day of heavy retention, the danger becomes even greater. In general, on the four key days of the lunar cycle—new moon, full moon, last quarter, and old moon—if the man's year coincides with the day star, he will be arrested by officials; on the four middle days of the lunar cycle—子, 午, 卯, 酉—if the woman's year coincides with the moon star, she will be attacked by thieves.

On the day of Renzi, using the hour of Wu as the month general and the time of Mao to cast the divination, the four lessons are寅 added to Ren,巳 added to Yin, Mao added to Zi, and Wu added to Mao. The three transmissions are Wu, You, and Zi. If this divination is cast on the fourteenth day of the first lunar month, it is called ground trouble. This is because the first day of the first lunar month begins with the mansion of Encampment, and counting sequentially to the fourteenth day lands on the mansion of Willow. Willow belongs to the Wu palace, which exactly matches the month general being in the middle position. If the same divination is cast on the second day of the sixth lunar month, it is called heaven and earth double trouble. This is because the month general of the sixth lunar month is Wu, and now Wu is on the Mao position, which is the middle position of the day mansion; looking further, the first day of the sixth lunar month begins with the mansion of Ghost, and the second day is the mansion of Willow, which still belongs to the Wu palace, which is the middle position of the month mansion. Both conditions are met, so it is called double trouble. In both of these examples, the Tiangang is tied to the position of Chou.

This lesson is most accurate when cast on the fourth middle month, fourth middle day, and the four key days of new moon, full moon, and the two intermediate phases. However, if the solar and lunar mansions are not taken as the initiating transmission, they cannot be considered true dual transmissions. Another point: even if the solar and lunar mansions are located in the middle position, if the Tiangang is not attached to the earthly branch Chou or Wei, it is called Du Zhuan, indicating that the three transmissions are blocked.

The Mind Mirror

The song of the "Heart Mirror" says: When the sun and moon are at the four central positions, this hexagram is called heaven and earth being troubled; if the Tiangang is also added to the positions of Chou or Wei, it will also be associated with the name Du Zhuan. For men, if their age year collides with the sun's position, and for women, if their age year collides with the moon's position, any action will bring calamity. This is to explain it clearly to you. Misfortune just dissipates and new trouble arises, joy turns into anger in an instant, and after reconciling with an enemy, a new grudge is formed. The days of弦, 望, 晦, and 朔 are exactly the days when heaven and earth are troubled; men will suffer from injuries and be detained by officials. The annotation says that弦, 望, 晦, and 朔 are the four cardinal days; if a man's age year collides with the sun's position, he will be arrested and harassed by officials. The last line of the song says: Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are the positions where earth is troubled; this indicates women will suffer from bleeding, one difficulty follows another.

In the spring season, the You (Metal) branch is the general, and there are eight classes of divination.

In the spring, when using the酉 general, there are eight days with two troubles, which are Yimao, Dingmao, Jimao, Xinmao, Guimao, Gengwu, Wuwu, and Renwu. The common condition for these eight days is that the Heaven Plate酉 is placed on the Earth Plate午, falling exactly on the central position and being taken as the Initiating Transmission, while the Tiangang is attached to the position of Chou and Wei.

In the summer of the Wu Earthly Branch, there are twelve lessons.

In summer, when using the hour of Wu, there are days with two disturbances. This is titled as the twelve lessons. Below are actually eight days: Jiazi, Bingzi, Dingyou, Jiyou, Gengzi, Renzi, Guiyou, and Xinyou. Their common condition is that the Heaven Plate Wu is placed on the Earth Plate You, exactly falling on the middle position and being taken as the Initiating Transmission, while the Tiangang is attached to Chou and Wei.

In the autumn month, the branch of Mao is the third lesson.

In the autumn season, when using the卯 (Mao) general, there are three days with two troubles: Wuzi, Xinyou, and Jiyou. Their common condition is that the Heaven Plate Mao is placed on the Earth Plate Zi and is taken as the Initiating Transmission, while the Tiangang is attached to Chou and Wei.

In the winter month, the first lesson is the Zi branch.

In winter, when the hour of Zi is used as the starting point, there are days of two troubles. The title is called Seven Lessons, and below are the six days listed: Dingmao, Dingchou, Dingyou, Xinmao, Bingwu, and Jimao. Their common condition is that the Heaven Plate Zi is placed on the Earth Plate Mao and is taken as the Initiating Transmission, while the Tiangang is attached to Chou and Wei.

The twenty-eight star mansions mentioned here include the names of stars such as Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, and so on. The counting begins with the Encampment mansion on the first day of the first lunar month, as previously explained. Continuing from there: the first day of the month corresponds to the Encampment mansion, the second day to the Wall mansion, the third and fourth days both correspond to the Legs mansion, the fifth day to the Stomach mansion, the sixth day to the昴 mansion, the seventh day to the Bi mansion, the eighth day to the Zi mansion, the ninth day to the Shen mansion, the tenth and eleventh days both correspond to the Well mansion, the twelfth day to the Ghost mansion, the thirteenth day to the Willow mansion, the fourteenth day to the Star mansion, and the fifteenth day to the Zhang mansion. When the star mansion calculated for a particular day is combined with one of the four central positions and is taken as the Initiating Transmission, that day conforms to the pattern of dual complexity.

Method of Determining the Lunar Mansion

The mnemonic for determining the monthly mansion is: the first month starts with Encampment mansion, the second with Legs mansion, the third with Stomach, the fourth with Completion, the fifth with Three Stars, the sixth with Ghost, the seventh with Zhang, the eighth with Angle, the ninth with Di, the tenth with Heart, the eleventh with Dipper, and the twelfth with Void. The explanatory note states: after determining the mansion for the first day of each month, each subsequent day is counted by moving forward one mansion. If the mansions of Qi, Zhang, Jing, Yi, Di, and Dou are encountered, an extra day is added for recalculation. If the mansion corresponding to the day in question is used as the initiating transmission, it is called ground annoyance. However, ground annoyance must be combined with the Tiangang associated with Chou and Wei, and the monthly mansion must be placed on the four cardinal positions before it can be considered valid.

The twelve earthly branches to which the moon's position belongs.

The chart showing the twenty-eight constellations corresponding to the twelve earthly branches is as follows: the Chen palace governs the Jiao and Kang constellations, the Mao palace governs the Di, Fang, and Xin constellations, the Yin palace governs the Wei and Ji constellations, the Chou palace governs the Dou and Niu constellations, the Zi palace governs the Nu, Xu, and Wei constellations, the Hai palace governs the Shi and Bi constellations, the Xu palace governs the Kui and Lou constellations, the You palace governs the Wei, Mao, and Bi constellations, the Shen palace governs the Zi and Shen constellations, the Wei palace governs the Jing and Gui constellations, the Wu palace governs the Liu, Xing, and Zhang constellations, and the Si palace governs the Yi and Zhen constellations. By determining which constellation the moon resides in, one can identify which earthly branch it falls under.

Below are the days in each month when the lunar mansion falls in theWu Palace: in the first month, take the 14th to 16th; in the second month, the 12th to 14th; in the third month, the 9th to 11th; in the fourth month, the 7th to 9th; in the fifth month, the 5th to 7th; in the sixth month, the 2nd to 4th; in the seventh month, only the first two days; in the eighth month, the 26th to 28th; in the ninth month, the 25th to 27th; in the tenth month, the 22nd to 24th; in the eleventh month, the 19th to 21st; in the twelfth month, the 15th to 17th. The corresponding day branches are Dingchou (belonging to the昴星 lesson), Dinghai, Jimao, Jiazi, Guiyou, Bingzi (belonging to the昴星 lesson), as well as Jichou, Dingyou, Gengzi, Jiyou, Renzi, Xinyou. All of these are taken with 午 added to 酉 for the initiating transmission. Whenever these day branches appear on the listed days, they match this pattern. In other words, as long as the lunar mansion falls in the Wu Palace for that month and the day branch is among the listed ones, the calculation should be made according to the earth branch.

Another set: In the first month, take the first to third days; in the second month, the fourth to sixth days; in the third month, the first three days; in the fourth month, only the new moon day; in the fifth month, the last two days of the month; in the sixth month, the twenty-sixth to twenty-eighth days; in the seventh month, the twenty-third to twenty-fifth days; in the eighth month, the eighteenth to twentieth days; in the ninth month, the twenty-sixth to twenty-eighth days; in the tenth month, the fourteenth to sixteenth days; in the eleventh month, the eleventh to thirteenth days; in the twelfth month, the first to third days. The corresponding day branches are Yimao, Gengwu, Jimao, Renwu, Xinmao, Guimao, Wuwu, and Dingmao. All of these are taken with You added to Wu as the initiating transmission. Whenever these day branches appear on the listed dates, they match this pattern. The usage is the same as the previous set: first determine the position of the monthly star, then check if the day branch falls within the listed ones. Only when both conditions are met does it truly constitute the pattern of Di Fan.

The third group: In the first month, only the thirtieth day is taken; in the second month, the twenty-eighth to thirtieth days; in the third month, the twenty-sixth to twenty-eighth days; in the fourth month, the twenty-fourth to twenty-sixth days; in the fifth month, the nineteenth to twenty-first days; in the sixth month, the twenty-third and twenty-fourth days; in the seventh month, the twenty-sixth to twenty-eighth days; in the eighth month, the eleventh to thirteenth days; in the ninth month, the ninth and tenth days; in the tenth month, the sixth to eighth days; in the eleventh month, the third to fifth days; in the twelfth month, the first two days. The corresponding day branches are Ji Maomao, Ding Maomao, Ding Chou, Ji Chou, Xin Maomao, Ding You. These are all taken as initiating transmission by adding Zi to Mao or Zi to You. Whenever these day branches appear on the listed dates, they match this pattern. Among the listed day branches, adding Zi to Mao and adding Zi to You are two different ways of overlaying. If either of these two methods is matched, and the date also corresponds to the listed month and day, it counts as belonging to this pattern.

The fourth group: In January, take the twenty-second to the twenty-fourth; in February, the twenty-first to the twenty-third; in March, the eighteenth to the twenty-first; in April, the sixteenth to the eighteenth; in May, the fourteenth to the seventeenth; in June, the eleventh to the fourteenth; in July, the eighth to the eleventh; in August, the third to the sixth; in September, the first four days; in October, the new moon day and the thirtieth; in November, the twenty-seventh to the twenty-ninth; in December, the twenty-fourth to the twenty-seventh. The corresponding day branches are Wuzi, Jiyou, Xinyou, Guiyou, Yiyou, and Dingyou. All of these are taken with the transmission initiated by the combination of the卯 (Mao) and酉 (You). Whenever these day branches occur on the listed dates, they match this pattern. For the above four groups of month, day, and day branch, only when the month, day, and day branch all match can it be considered as two troubles; if only one matches, it does not count.

The four terms zi, wu, maou, and you, when combined, result in a total of thirty-seven types of divination lessons. These lessons are only valid when they occur on the exact month and day specified above. For example, on the twenty-second day of the first lunar month, which is the Jiyou day, if the lesson is cast at the shen hour, the moon's position for that day is maou, and the day branch is also Jiyou. Maou is placed on top of zi, and the central position overlaps with itself, making it the initiating transmission. This is known as a lesson called di fan.

If the Tiangang is not attached to Chou or Wei, this lesson is renamed Du Zhuan: all four directions and gates are closed, the three lights are dim, virtue is confined within and punishment is revealed outside, it is suitable to stay at home and not to travel far. For example, on Jimao day using Wu general and starting the lesson at卯 time, on April Bingwu day using Shen general and starting the lesson at午 time, on June Guiyou day using Wei general and starting the lesson at You time, all belong to Tian Fan combined with Du Zhuan. Another example is in the ninth month, when Chen is placed on You, the initial day of the month starts at the Root Mansion, and counting sequentially until the fourteenth day, the moon's mansion is at Xu. This day is Gengxu day, with Xu placed on Mao, taken as the Initiating Transmission, which is Di Fan combined with Du Zhuan.
