The Sixth Line of the Hexagram of Cultivation: The tiger watches intently, its desire follows closely, no blame. Xiang Yu faced the army at Gaixia, Han Xin entered the Weiyang Palace.

The "Tiger Watching" divination method arises on a yin day, while the "Bright Star" method arises on a yang day. The imagery is that when a rooster crows, it lifts its head, and when a tiger stares at someone, it lowers its head. One lifts and one lowers, corresponding to the two methods of taking a divination based on yin and yang. If the "Tiger Watching" method is used on a yin day and the Heavenly General is riding the White Tiger, it is like having tigers crouching both in front and behind. Even a brave person would find it impossible to exert strength. In such a case, any divination would inevitably lead to extreme fear and danger.
Examples include: On a Dinghai day, using the night general,寅 is placed on亥 and rides the White Tiger, falling in the final transmission; on a Dingchou day, the day branch is placed on未 using the night general, and there is also辰 placed on丑 using the day general; on a Xinmao day,子 is placed on卯 using the night general; on a Xinwei day,亥 is placed on戌 using the day general. In the last case, although the White Tiger is present on戌 and亥, which are in the position of Kongwang, it still counts as the White Tiger being on the day stem because it is on top of the day stem; the middle transmission and the stem also have two White Tigers; the day branch is occupied by申, and the initial and final transmissions also have申, which are the original positions of the White Tiger. Thus, there are five instances of the White Tiger's presence on the stem, branch, and three transmissions. Whenever such a situation occurs, events will be shocking and disastrous, and misfortune is difficult to avoid.
There is also the case of a Wuyin day with Chou added to You in the morning. Although it is a strong day, it should still be interpreted as explained before. As the saying goes, two fists cannot overcome four hands, and何况 it is encountering a fierce tiger. The sixth line of the third hexagram in The Zhou Changes, the Fulfillment Hexagram, says that when a tiger bites, it is ominous. The ninth line of the fourth hexagram says that if one remains cautious, it will eventually lead to good fortune. This is exactly what is meant. Additionally, on a Jisi day, the day stem is Shen, the first transmission is Shen, the middle transmission is also Shen, and it coincides with the Tiger Watching lesson. When divining matters, it is as if passing through four tiger dens in succession, how could it not be extremely dangerous? On a Jiyou day, the fourth transmission has the White Tiger riding Wei added to Shen, and the final transmission is also Shen. This is the form of the Tiger Watching lesson, and when divining matters, it is as if encountering three tigers. On a Guiwei day, it is already the Tiger Watching lesson. The first transmission is Shen, the middle transmission is Yin, both of which are tiger positions, and the final transmission is also Shen, which is the same as passing through four tigers. On a Yiwei day, Yin is added to Chen, which is also a tiger, and it coincides with the Tiger Watching lesson. The Wei position is occupied by the White Tiger above You. If You is the birth year of the person being divined, it would be even more ominous.
The plans you devise are often clumsy and fall into a web, fifth five. It is like a blind man being placed into a trap.
The stem on the day stem is the previous earthly branch, and the branch on the day branch is also the previous earthly branch. This is called Tian Luo Di Wang. Whenever such a situation occurs, the Luo and Wang trap both the person and their home, making it impossible for any divination to be smooth or clear. This pattern is common in classes like Jin Ru and Lian Ru, so there is no need to list them all. For example, on Jiashen day, the stem is卯 and the branch is酉, and the same applies to other days.
Whenever this divination is cast, it is only favorable for maintaining one's current position and adhering to one's proper role. At that time, the heavenly stem and earthly branch spirits are still strong and effective. However, once there is a thought of action or endeavor, those two spirits turn into a net that entangles both the person and their dwelling, transforming into Yangren, aInauspicious Sha, which harms the person's body and destroys their home. If further compounded by凶将, the misfortune becomes even more severe. Only when the spirits associated with the person's birth year and destiny can break through this net of heavenly stem and earthly branch, will disaster be avoided. Alternatively, if the spirits on the heavenly stem and earthly branch exactly meet Kongwang, it is also called breaking the net and breaking the web.
There is another type of intersecting pattern: the day stem is covered by the net of the day branch, and the day branch is covered by the net of the day stem. When predicting events, if I am trying to entangle the other party, the other party has already entangled me. Both sides are secretly scheming. For example, on a Gengyin day, the stem is卯 and the branch is酉, and this type of lesson is common in the Four Extremes structure. If the net appears on the day stem side, it indicates the official will suffer the loss of his father. If the net appears on the day branch side, it indicates the loss of the mother. In addition, on a Dingchou day, if the stem shows寅 it is mutual net, if it shows申 it is common net; on a Guiwei day, the stem shows寅 or申; on a Jichou day, the stem shows寅 or申; on a Gengyin day, the stem shows卯 or酉; on a Bingshen day, the stem shows午; on a Gengshen day, the stem shows酉; on a Wushen day, the stem shows午; on a Renshen day, the stem shows子.
Heaven's net envelops itself, bringing about its own misfortune, fifth and sixth. Ho Guang had meritorious deeds in establishing and removing a ruler, but eventually he brought about the calamity of his own clan.
For example, on a Jiashen day, if the hexagram is placed on the寅 (Yin) position, the未 (Wei) is theTomb Spirit (mound spirit) of Jia wood and covers the day stem. If the person's birth hour is also未, this is called 天网自裹 (heavenly net enclosing oneself). Whenever such a divination occurs, misfortune is surely self-inflicted, unrelated to others' secret schemes. The person's actions are unclear and confused, as if in a fog, and they often face mockery and ridicule. This is mostly due to a decline in fate and unfavorable stars. It is advisable to perform a ritual offering and pray to one's own birth star to avoid impending calamity. Other day stems should be treated similarly. If the initiating transmission and the time of divination both attack the day stem, and the person's birth hour is exactly theTomb Spirit of the day stem, the situation becomes even more dangerous.
The divination pattern called "Ding Shen Yan Mu" is as follows: For example, if the day is Yisi (乙巳) and the hour is Wu (未) added to Yi (乙), then Wu is the tomb of Yi wood, which covers the day stem. When casting the horoscope at night, this position is occupied by Teng Snake. If the course is cast in the fourth month, then Wu is the month's Aversion, and also serves as Fei Lian Da Sha and Tian Mu Sha. Additionally, Wu is the hidden Ding Shen of this week. If the person's birth day is exactly Wu, then at night they will have many strange dreams, leading to a decline in their fortune. They should pray to heaven and perform rituals to remove these stars and evils, to avoid extreme misfortune. In the Jiachen week, if the course is cast in the fourth month and Wu is added to the day branch, then the same interpretation applies. The family home will often experience strange phenomena, because Wu is both the hidden Ding Shen and is accompanied by the month's Aversion and other evil stars like Tian Mu.
There is an abundance of resources but a lack of sufficient gains, with the fifth and seventh elements being involved. Although the four barbarian regions are subdued, the realm within the seas is left empty and depleted.
For example, on a Bingwu day, the stem is寅 and the branch is卯. Both寅 and卯 are wood that nourish the Bing fire. Normally, both the stem and branch would be nourished, but these two are both in the empty position. Meanwhile, the second and fourth lessons both show official ghosts and thieves. Another example is on a Renwu day, the stem is申. Normally,申 is the place of growth for Ren water, but it is in the empty position of the ten-day cycle. Although it appears to nourish, it fails to actually nourish, so it is worse than having no nourishment at all. Therefore, one has to turn to the first transmission's巳 fire for wealth, but the巳 fire is also in the empty position and carries the broken-up evil sign, resulting in a loss of money. Moreover, the middle transmission shows寅, which drains the energy of the Ren water, and the day branch's卯 wood also drains the day stem. Continuing this reasoning, the gains are insufficient while the losses are excessive, resulting in the amount received being less than the amount spent.
For example, on a Guiwei day, the metal Shen in the heavenly stem is the growth of the water Gui, but it falls into emptiness; the wood Yin in the earthly branch specifically drains the energy of the water Gui, yet it is solid and not empty. One side is empty and the other is solid, resulting only in loss and no gain. Another example is on a Wuzi day, the fire Wu in the heavenly stem is originally the life qi of the earth Wu, but it also falls into the旬空. The beneficial element is already empty, yet the three transmissions are arranged with寅,卯,辰, all of which are officials that harm the earth Wu, and they also trigger the fire Wu in the heavenly stem, turning it into Yangren, making misfortune unavoidable. If the person's birth day is Hai or Zi, the凶势 can be slightly eased.
For example, on a Guiwei day, the Chou is placed on Si, and the three transmissions form a metal formation which could support the day stem. Unfortunately, both the first and final transmissions fall into empty positions, leaving only the middle transmission's Chou soil not empty. Meanwhile, the nobleman, Gou Chen, and Tai Chang in the daytime general all belong to soil, and together they all attack the day stem. Another example is on a Yisi day, where the卯 on the stem falls into Kongwang. In this case, it is better to place the day stem on the day branch, even if it means a slight loss of energy. All these examples illustrate the same principle: what nourishes me falls into emptiness, while what drains or attacks me is fully present.
This pattern is called "gaining little but losing much." For example, on a Jiayin day, the stem is卯, which is the Prosperity position for Jia wood. It should be strong. However, the three transmissions are arranged as Chen, Si, and Wu, which gradually pull the day stem away. The first transmission Chen forms the sixth harmful relationship with the stem卯, and the middle and final transmissions Si and Wu, being fire, further steal the strength of the wood. This is like wanting to gain a single grain of rice but ending up losing half a year's food supply.
Using the broken body and mind with nowhere to return, fifth eight. Determined will and hidden body, the three armies are diligently laboring.
For example, on a Wushen day, the heavenly stem is Wei. The three transmissions are Zi, Yin, and Chen. Although the first transmission Zi water is the wealth of the Wutu stem, it is seated on Xu earth and thus suffers from being overcome, and it is also accompanied by the White Tiger. Just because of this dangerous wealth, it leads the person into the realm of official ghosts in the middle and final transmissions. Fortunately, the official ghosts themselves fall into Kongwang, so the danger does not actually affect the person. Anyone who receives this divination should understand the old saying: it is better not to come or go at all, rather than come and go in vain. There will be neither joy nor sorrow.
There are several other similar cases. On a Bingyin day, when the hour is Shen and it is placed over Si, during the night divination, the upper and lower trigrams are both Teng Snake, enclosing the wealth god in the middle and thus defeating it. The middle and final transmissions also fall into Kongwang. On a Dingmao day, when the hour is You and it is placed over Ding, during the day divination, it is accompanied by Vermilion Bird, enclosing and defeating the wealth god. The official ghosts in the middle and final transmissions fall into Kongwang. On a Guiwei day, when the hour is Si and it is placed over Zi, taking the wealth, it is a case of entering the grave from the grave. Although the middle and final transmissions are official ghosts of the day stem, since the fire of Si is attached and enters the grave, it cannot become a ghost. On a RENYIN day, when the hour is Hai and it is placed over Ji, the wealth god is defeated. Although the three transmissions come to defeat the day stem, it is fortunate that the middle and final transmissions fall into Kongwang. In the case of the RENYIN day's return chant, we have to abandon the empty wealth on the day stem, turning instead to the leakage in the initial and final transmissions. Fortunately, the final transmission of Shen can still nourish the day stem. In the case of the RENYIN day's hidden chant, although the day stem meets the禄神 (favorable god) of the day stem, during the day divination it is accompanied by Tian Kong, the middle transmission meets leakage, and the final transmission's wealth falls into Kongwang. In all these cases, wealth and禄神 are either falling into Kongwang or being defeated, and in the end, there is no real attainment.
Huagai covers the sun, people are confused and dim-minded, fifth ninth. The ruler has orders of entanglement, the general will have useless achievements.
The concept of Huagai covering the sun refers to the situation where the hour stem that serves as Huagai is also theTomb Spirit (mound spirit) of the day stem, and it is placed above the day stem, serving as the initiating transmission. When divining one's own situation, it often indicates confusion and obscurity, making it difficult to explain clearly; or it may indicate being wronged without any resolution. For those who are away, they are unwilling to return because they find things unsatisfactory in their current location. For example, on days of Renshen and Renchen, the hour of Chen is placed over the day stem Ren and serves as the initiating transmission; on days of Yihai and Yiwei, the hour of Wei is placed over the day stem Yi and serves as the initiating transmission.
The sun shines brightly upon the house, sixth ten-thousand. Do not invite the banner of correct and upright forces, do not attack the array of grand and majestic formations.
For example, on a Bingwu day, if Wu is placed on the Wu branch, Wu is the墓 of the day's branch, which indicates that the house is dull and stagnant. However, if Wu is the month general, then Wu represents the sun, and the sun shines upon the house, making it bright and sunny. Even if not, there are often people above who bring it more light and brilliance, which is even better. If the year's master and the nobleman also enter the house position, it is even more favorable. However, when divining matters between me and others, this situation is unfavorable for me but favorable for the other party, since the day's branch originally belongs to the other side.
For example, on a Yimao day, if the month general is determined as Zi and the divination is started at the Mao hour, the sun is exactly acting as the nobleman to generate and assist the house position. When divining about the family residence, there must be buried treasure beneath the house. If the divination is done in the Zi year, there will certainly be a noble son born in that year. Although Zi falls within the旬空, the sun itself is an image of something high in the sky and is not afraid of kongwang. In general, when discussing the sun, it is only disliked when it is located in the direction of night, at which time it is not suitable to use. If the sun is in the same position as the subject, it is most suitable to take the opportunity to clear up grievances and wash away old hatreds.
Heavenly Stem乘Earthly Branch墓and Tiger without disease, sixth one, not favorable for fighting and cutting weapons.
On six days beginning with Xin, the Chou branch is placed on the Xu branch, and using the daytime general hour, the Chou branch rides on the White Tiger and is also theTomb Spirit of Xin metal. On Xin You day, the Chou branch exactly falls on Kongwang, which is especially ominous; on Xin Si day it is even worse, because at that time the Chou branch is not only the spirit of the current ten-day period's Ding, but also rides on the White Tiger and serves as theTomb Spirit. If this is used for divination about illness, it indicates certain death; for other matters, it suggests confusion and ominous outcomes, and one should also be cautious of false accusations, being arrested, and receiving corporal punishment. If the divination is cast in winter, the ominous effect is somewhat less severe, because Chou is strong in winter and can be considered as the treasury of wealth.
The other six Yi days, when the day's merit moves in the daytime in a favorable direction, the Wei hexagram is also riding on the White Tiger. However, it only appears on the person's age year and birth year, not on the day stem. In this situation, if the divination starts in summer, the凶 (malevolent) influence is slightly lighter, because Wei is strong in summer and can still be considered as a repository. This case does not apply to other heavenly stems.
The term "Hǔ Guǐ Jiā Gān" refers to a situation where the White Tiger deity is combined with the Day Stem, and this deity happens to be the official ghost that overcomes the Day Stem, directly pressing upon it. For example, on the sixth day of Jǐ (己), the branch Mǎo (卯) is added to Jǐ; this applies both during the day and night. On the sixth day of Rén (壬), the branch Xū (戌) is added to Rén, and this applies both day and night. On the sixth day of Guǐ (癸), the branch Xū (戌) is added to Guǐ, and this applies during the day. Except for the days of Yǐ (乙) and Xīn (辛), which have special cases, the eight days of Jiā (甲), Bīng (丙), Wù (戊), Gēng (庚), Rén (壬), Dīng (丁), Jǐ (己), and Guǐ (癸) do not all possess this pattern.
Branches bearing the corpse tiger have a hidden corpse, sixth six two. Great Excess nine three, the beam is bent and causes misfortune, not advantageous to dig deep ditches and build high fortifications.
This pattern divides into two categories: one is when the day stem's墓 (burial) is located on the day branch, and the other is when the day branch itself has its墓 on the day branch. In both cases, when predicting the household, there must be buried bones causing disturbances or constant sounds and shadows seen. If theTomb Spirit (burial deity) further attacks the house, the prediction becomes more accurate. For example, on a Yihai day, Wei is the burial of Yi wood, which is located on the day branch Hai and attacks the water of Hai. During the day, it also takes the White Tiger. Other examples include theHidden Chant (hidden chant) lesson on Yiwei day and the case of Wei added to You on Yiyou day, which although also involve theTomb Spirit with the White Tiger on the branch, do not attack the branch. Similarly, on Xinwei and Xinyou days, although Chou is added to the day branch, since it does not attack the branch, the凶 (evil) aspect is slightly lighter. However, cases where theTomb Spirit itself is the month general are not included in this category.
The second type of example: On a day with the day branch Bingzi, the branch Zi is the墓 of the stem Bing. When the branch Zi is placed on top of the day branch and it is able to overcome the day branch, and it is also accompanied by the White Tiger, if this is used for divination about the family, there will certainly be mourning events in the family, or there will be visits for funerals, and there will certainly be a case of a body being kept in the house during the same year. One should also carefully examine which of the Six Relations the墓 god belongs to, in order to determine who will die. There is also the case of a day with the day branch Dinghai, with the branch Hai placed on top of it, and this is also of this type.
The concept of "White Tiger Ghost Conquering the Branch" refers to the official ghost that conquers the day branch riding on the White Tiger, and then turning back to conquer the branch. For example, on a Renzi day, the戌 is added to the子, and it is a daytime divination; on a Dingchou day, the寅 is added to the丑, and it is a nighttime divination; on a Renyin day, it is a reverse lesson, and it is a nighttime divination; on a Guimao day, the申 is added to the卯, and it is a nighttime divination; on a Renwu day, it is a reverse lesson, and it is a daytime divination; on a Yiwei day and Jiwei day, the卯 is added to the未, and it is a nighttime divination; on a Bingshen day, the午 is added to the申, and it is a daytime divination; on a Guihai day, the戌 is added to the亥, regardless of day or night, and this position is always riding the White Tiger.
The divination pattern called "Mù Mén Kāi" (Mourning Gate Opens) occurs on days of the Earthly Branches卯 (Mao) and酉 (You). If the Day Stem's墓 (burial) is combined with the Teng Snake or White Tiger and placed on the Day Branch, it indicates consecutive deaths. The pattern called "Shé Mù Kè Zhī" (Snake Burial Overcomes the Branch) happens when the Day Stem's墓 is combined with the Teng Snake and placed on the Day Branch, and this then overcomes the Day Branch. This indicates frequent strange occurrences within the family home. For example, on Bingzi day, the戌 (Xu) is placed on the Zi (子) branch at night; on Renzi day, the辰 (Chen) is placed on the Zi branch at night. Other instances where the墓 is present on the branch but does not overcome it result in slightly less severe misfortune, yet strange events are still unavoidable. There are also thirty-three other examples, which are not listed here. Whenever these patterns occur, it is advisable to consult a spiritualist to perform rituals for protection or to stabilize the home. This is known as "Mù Mén Kāi," which when related to illness indicates that two or three family members will die. If the White Tiger is also present, the prediction is more accurate.
Both sides are injured and both suffer losses, Sixth in the Third. The clam and the oyster struggle, while the fisherman sits and gains the benefit.
The day stem and day branch are each attacked by their respective superior gods, so they are called mutually injured. When predicting legal disputes, both parties will suffer; when predicting other matters, both sides will also suffer losses: if predicting about oneself, the body will be injured; if predicting about the family residence, the house will be damaged. For example, on a Dinghai day, the water of the heavenly stem (the water of the son) overcomes the day stem Ding fire, and the earth of the earthly branch (the earth of the辰) overcomes the day branch Hai water, which is exactly this kind of situation. The method to resolve this is to find a way to remove the one that overcomes me. For example, on a Xinwei day, the day stem is overcome by Wu (the fire of the午), and the day branch is overcome by Mao (the wood of the卯). When predicting matters related to trade and commerce, after a transaction is completed, there will certainly be disputes; if there were disputes beforehand, they will instead be resolved.
The sixth and fourth: In the case of a husband and wife engaging in improper relations, each has their own private affairs. Two opposing yin forces are involved, and their situation is discussed.
The day stem is overcome by the heavenly stem on the day branch, and the day branch is overcome by the heavenly stem on the day stem. This is called the Wuyin lesson. Although it is called Wuyin, why is it said that husband and wife each have private feelings? Because husband and wife are the most important relationship in human society. Now, if the stem and branch mutually overcome each other, there is no harmony between husband and wife, so there must be mutual infidelity and lack of agreement. As for which side the private feelings lie, it depends on where there is affection in the lesson, so we can determine who is having an affair outside.
In the "Six Yin Mirror," an example is given of a lesson with the day stem Jiazi, where the heavenly stem is Wu and the earthly branch is Shen. It says that the Jia wood is accommodating to the Zi water, but is instead attacked by the Shen metal. Since Zi is adjacent to Jia, the Wu魁 must come to invade; the wife's heart has another joy, concealing private feelings, because Shen and Zi mutually generate, and water and metal combine. There are also examples such as when the day stem is Guisi with the Zi branch, or Renwu with the Zi branch, or Gengzi with the Chou branch, or Yihai with the Chou branch. Whenever this pattern appears, one should not rigidly assume it refers only to marital infidelity. It is not exclusively about marital affairs: it could also mean that someone previously promised something, but later there was no further communication or care between them. This is not just lack of affection, but rather mutual ill will.
The true interpretation of the divination lesson involves the day stem overcoming the day branch's spirit, and the day branch overcoming the day stem's spirit. If both partners' ages fall exactly on these two positions, the prediction becomes especially accurate. For example, on a Jiazi day, the stem is Wu and the branch is Chen: the day stem Jia wood overcomes the branch's Chen earth, and the day branch Zi water overcomes the day stem's Wu fire. If the man's age falls on the day branch and the woman's age falls on the day stem, then the person seeking the divination is certainly concerned with a divorce. In the following examples, we only need to check the Kongwang to make the judgment. The third line of the "Xiao Xu" hexagram in the Zhou Changes describes a broken wheel and a couple turning against each other, which is exactly the image here.
Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branches: The sixth in the fifth position, the gate is closed and the person's dwelling is ruined. "Gate" means寡 (few or sparse).
The deceased's stem also serves as the guardian deity of the four seasons and is used as the initiating transmission. This is the pattern of this particular divination. When making a judgment, one must determine from which side the initiating transmission comes: if it comes from the day stem's two lessons, it indicates decline in the family's population; if it comes from the day branch's two lessons, it indicates the family residence being abandoned.
The method of determining the "Guan Shen" (Gate God) is as follows: in spring it is Chou, in summer it is Chen, in autumn it is Wei, and in winter it is Xu. For example, on the days of Yi Chou, Yi Wei, Yi You, and Yi Hai, if a divination is cast in autumn, Wei is both the tomb of Yi Wood and the Gate God of autumn. Therefore, it is taken as the initiating transmission and placed upon the day stem, indicating illness and weakness among family members and people. Among the other six days of Ji (甲), only Jiachen (甲辰) in autumn has Xu also acting as Ding Shen (丁神), making the凶 (misfortune) even more severe. The other days should be interpreted according to the previous explanation. Another example is on Dingmao (丁卯) day, when Xu is placed upon Mao and serves as the initiating transmission. If a divination is cast in winter, Xu is both the tomb of Ding and the Gate God, placed upon the day branch, indicating the collapse and abandonment of the house. The same logic applies to other similar cases. There is also a pattern called "Mù Shén Fù Rì Zuò Shēng Qì" (Mound God Covering the Day as Life Qi): if one is seeking a position related to warehouses or treasuries, they will certainly succeed. In such cases, one should not treat it as a Mound God.
Section 66: Branches, Graves, Wealth, and Journeys - Zhong and Deng perished in Shu.
The spirit of the Day Branch's burial is also the wealth star for the Day Stem, indicating losses in business and trade, obstacles on the way, and blockages in all endeavors. For example, on a Jiazi day, the Day Branch is placed on Zi, and since Chen is the burial of Zi and also the wealth for Jia Wood, it is taken as the initiating transmission. On a Jiawu day, when Xu is placed on寅 and initiates, or when Xu is placed on Zi and initiates, and on a Yiyou day, when Chou is placed on Chen and initiates, all belong to this pattern.
This section refers to a situation where, on a day of卯 (Mao) or酉 (You), if the person's age (行年) also falls on卯 or酉, someone who is away from home will certainly be in a dilemma, uncertain and indecisive. This is elaborately explained in the "Six壬 Heart Mirror" (六壬心镜) under the category of dragon battle (龙战) lessons. It is especially unfavorable if the person also encounters the Tian Che (天车)煞. The method to determine Tian Che煞 is: in spring it is丑 (Chou), in summer it is辰 (Chen), in autumn it is未 (Wei), and in winter it is戌 (Xu).
The sixth and seventh chapters discuss disease symptoms caused by the Hukou deity. The people of Hukou suffer from military campaigns, floods, and epidemics.
The divine being of the metal element rides the White Tiger, and the illness must be in the liver meridian, because metal controls wood; treatment should focus on the lung, which belongs to metal, to relieve the controlling force, rather than directly treating the liver. The divine being of the wood element rides the White Tiger, and the illness must be in the spleen meridian, because wood controls earth; treatment should focus on the liver, which belongs to wood, rather than directly treating the spleen. The divine being of the water element rides the White Tiger, and the illness must be in the heart meridian, because water controls fire; treatment should focus on the kidney, which belongs to water, rather than directly treating the heart. The divine being of the fire element rides the White Tiger, and the illness must be in the lung meridian, because fire controls metal; treatment should focus on the heart, which belongs to fire, rather than directly treating the lung. The divine being of the earth element rides the White Tiger, and the illness must be in the kidney meridian, because earth controls water; treatment should focus on the spleen, which belongs to earth, rather than directly treating the kidney. All these methods have been repeatedly tested and proven effective; however, if the White Tiger itself is being controlled or if the household it resides in has already declined, there is no need for further treatment.
The "Yun Liang Shen" (Grain Transport God) pattern: When predicting illness, one should focus on the day stem's food god. If this food god is directly on the day stem or on the year pillar, it is most favorable, and this position is called "Yun Liang Shen." However, it is most忌 (to be avoided) if it falls in "Kongwang" (void). The "Lu Liang Shen" (Grain of Fortune God) pattern: This also involves the day stem's fortune god, also called "Lu Liang Shen." However, it must not fall in "Kongwang," must not be a "Bi Kou" (closed mouth) god, and must not be overcome. If a long-term sick person encounters these situations, they will certainly not eat any grain and die of starvation. For example, on a Xinwei day, if you have You (Metal) on寅 (Tiger), the original fortune of Xin is on You. Now, You is sitting in the "Jue" (decline) position, and becomes a "Bi Kou" (closed mouth), which is called "Wu Lu Ke" (no fortune chart). When predicting illness, it indicates death; when predicting salary and food matters, it is also very inauspicious.
The lesson pattern of Ju Ti is when the禄神 of a yin and soft heavenly stem is in a state of绝; the lesson pattern of Fan Yin is when the禄神 of a yang and strong heavenly stem is in a state of绝. If the lesson pattern also indicates绝嗣, it is mostly due to the deceased ancestors causing trouble. The pattern of Sheng Si is to observe the Life Qi and Death Qi of the current month, which is most effective. For example, in the first lunar month, the Life Qi is in Zi and the Death Qi is in Wu. Zi water exactly overcomes Wu fire, so the Life Qi can control the Death Qi. However, if the lesson is cast within the Jiayin decade, Zi falls into Kongwang, making the Life Qi weak and the Death Qi strong, which is ominous for illness. At this time, if the person's year pillar is亥 water, there is still a chance of recovery, because亥 water can also overcome the Death Qi in Wu. But if the Death Qi overcomes the Life Qi, and the Life Qi falls into Kongwang, or if the person's year pillar god supports the Death Qi, then death is certain. If the Life Qi and Death Qi do not overcome each other, although the illness is not serious, it will only be prolonged and not cured quickly.
The White Tiger is riding on the Day Stem's official ghost and is falling into Kongwang, indicating that the person has been ill for a long time but has not recovered. This is called the White Tiger in the tomb position: when the Day Stem's tomb god is riding the White Tiger and appears in six positions such as the Day Stem, Branch, and Three Transmissions, the illness is definitely a mass in the abdomen, and treatment should involve medicine to eliminate accumulation and break up the mass. For example, on the six days of Yi, when the White Tiger is riding on the position of Wei in the daytime sequence, on Yiyou day, the Wei position falls into Kongwang, which is not dangerous, and the illness is easy to treat, not an old mass. Similarly, on the six days of Xin, when the White Tiger is riding on the position of Chou in the daytime sequence, on Xinyou day, the Chou position falls into Kongwang, which is also easy to treat.
The pattern of White Tiger riding on Ding Ghost: On six days of Xin, if the White Tiger is riding on the Ding spirit of the current ten-day period, then in divination about illness, one can determine the exact location of the pain. For example, on a Xinmao day, if亥 is placed on丑 and taken as the Middle Transmission, and during the daytime when the lesson is cast,亥 is riding the White Tiger and also serves as the Ding spirit, it indicates a headache that may be fatal. Other examples should be interpreted according to the nature of the branches where the White Tiger and Ding spirit fall.
When the White Tiger is in the position of Chou, it indicates spleen pain or abdominal pain; if it is in Mao, it indicates hand pain or eye pain; if it is in Si, it indicates tooth pain or throat pain; if it is in Wei, it indicates stomach pain or pain from a mass; if it is in You, it indicates large intestine disease. If Hai is in the positions of Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, or Mao, it indicates head problems; if Hai is in the positions of Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, or You, it indicates kidney problems. The other branches should be analyzed similarly. If the official ghost (官鬼) of the day stem falls in six positions but does not ride the White Tiger, the disease can still be determined by the official ghost alone: if fire is the ghost, it indicates lung disease; if water is the ghost, it indicates heart disease; if metal is the ghost, it indicates liver disease; if earth is the ghost, it indicates kidney disease; if wood is the ghost, it indicates spleen disease. If the official ghost is both attacked and falls in Kongwang, the illness will naturally recover without treatment.
The蒿矢 lesson can also indicate physical pain in the body: when metal is placed on fire, it indicates pain in the bones and joints. This is most accurate when庚 day and 申 or 酉 are placed on巳 or 午. In the连茹 lesson, if the connected god is the wealth god of the day stem, the illness is caused by excessive eating; if the god of the person's year and life can control that wealth god, there is a chance of recovery; but if the god of the person's year and life instead supports the wealth god, it will certainly lead to death.
The "Zhuo Lun" pattern: When the branch of Mao is placed on Shen, or Xu is placed on Mao, it indicates illness with the inability to move the hands and feet, or injury to the body. The "Kong Wang" pattern: When the day stem's禄神 falls into Kongwang and is seated in the direction that克制 it, the illness will certainly lead to starvation and death. For example, on Jiachen day, when寅 is placed on You, and it is night divination, and寅 is also riding the White Tiger, the same applies to the reverse pattern at night. On Yisi day, when Mao is placed on Shen, and it is night divination, the same applies to the reverse pattern at night. On Dinghai day, when Wu is placed on Hai, and it is night divination, the day stem's food god is trapped in a forbidden place, and the method of interpretation is the same as the previous case.
The pattern of the禄神 closed mouth: the禄神 of the day stem acts as the closed mouth god, meaning it falls on the last branch of its旬 and is accompanied by the White Tiger. For example, on Yiwei day, the卯 is placed on the申, and this applies to night divination in a reverse repetition pattern. On Bingxu day and Wuzi day, the巳 serves as the closed mouth禄神. On Xinwei day, the酉 is placed on the戌 for night divination. On Renxu day, the亥 is the closed mouth禄神.
The hexagram of six boards: "Liu He" (六合) is riding on Shen and is placed on Mao, forming an image of a corpse entering the coffin. Shen represents the human body, and starting the calculation in the third month is most accurate, for at that time Shen is the dead body, that is, the corpse; above it is Liu He covering it, and below is Mao wood, which is the coffin board. Six pieces of wood make a coffin. Once the corpse is in the coffin, if the illness is divined, it is certain to be fatal. One should also carefully check which of the Six Relations it belongs to, in order to determine which person is affected. If Shen is placed on Mao without riding on Liu He, and the calculation starts in the ninth month, then it is only a person lying in bed, not yet recovered, because in the ninth month Shen is the Life Qi, and Mao wood is just a wooden bed. On Guimao day, when Shen is placed on Mao, the death of parents is especially quick, because the parents'爻 (line) has entered the coffin. Another example is on Bingxu and Dingmao days, when Shen is placed on Mao with Liu He on top in the daytime, the death of the wife is certain, because the wife's wealth line has entered the coffin. All these examples are most accurate when the calculation starts in the third month.
The pattern "White Tiger Enters the Funeral Car" indicates that when the hour stem is placed on the day stem and the initiating transmission is taken from the combination of Shen and Si, it is most accurate, and the divination regarding illness is very ominous. The pattern "Entering the Gate of Ghosts" suggests that on a Geng day, if Shen is the person's destiny stem and the lesson is a reverse repetition, the illness is certain to be fatal. The method of capturing the soul spirit is when on a Wu day, the Chen stem is occupied by the Black Tortoise. This appears during the night when the hour progresses in the normal order and during the day when it regresses. This is most accurate starting from the eleventh month, because at that time the Chen stem is exactly the Death Qi.
The Bath Tub Death: The taboo is having water in the bath tub. The determination of the bath tub position is: in spring it is the辰 (Chen) position, in summer the未 (Wei) position, in autumn the戌 (Xu) position, and in winter the丑 (Chou) position. On the earth plate, the bath tub position should not have the water branches亥 (Hai) and子 (Zi). On the heaven plate, the bath tub position should not have the water generals Heavenly Empress (Heavenly Empress) andBlack Tortoise (Black Tortoise). When predicting illness in children, encountering these situations leads to a particularly quick death, because亥 (Hai) governs children and子 (Zi) governs descendants, so water is most feared. Moreover, Heavenly Empress (Heavenly Empress) naturally belongs to子 (Zi), andBlack Tortoise (Black Tortoise) naturally belongs to亥 (Hai). The pattern of cold and heat: when巳 (Si) and午 (Wu) are placed over亥 (Hai) and子 (Zi), and if they also overcome the day stem, it indicates consumption disease. In the case of a returning heavenly stem lesson, it indicates a fever with alternating chills and heat, commonly known as malaria.
This pattern, "Yanxi Zhi Bing" (Disease from Celebration and Joy), applies to the three days: Guiyou, Guihai, and Guichou. On these days, the hexagram of Wei (Earth) on the day branch is occupied by Tai Chang and is taken as the initiating transmission, which occurs during the night general hour. Similarly, for the three days: Renxu, Renzi, and Rennyin, the hexagram of Wei on the day branch is also occupied by Tai Chang, which is taken as the initiating transmission during the night noble hour. These six days form a pattern because the Wei earth, which is occupied by Tai Chang, is able to overcome the day stem and occupies the position of the house, or directly becomes the initiating transmission. When this pattern is used to divinate illness, it indicates that the illness was caused by celebration, drinking, and feasting, or by visiting relatives and returning home with illness. If a person in official position encounters this pattern, it suggests that they became ill due to excessive drinking during a banquet. For other matters, this pattern indicates that the outcome is not favorable due to such events.
This pattern, "disease caused by wife," applies to the days of Renzi and Guichou. When the hidden stem of the ten-day cycle matches the heavenly stem of the day, it indicates that the person will fall ill upon visiting his wife's family, and this prediction is very accurate. However, if the person's birth year or birth stem contains the wood of Mao, it can alleviate the situation. If instead, it contains the wood of Yin, divine protection may still be obtained, so it is best to urgently consult a priest for a ritual to ward off the ill effects. If there is any delay, the wood of Yin may be absorbed by the earth of Wei, making it difficult to save.
This pattern is called "Blood Aversion, Disease Tiger Becomes Ghost": When the White Tiger is riding on the Bingfu deity to attack the day stem, it is particularly ominous; if the person's birth year also carries both the Blood Branch and Blood Taboo evils, they are certain to suffer from blood-related illnesses. If a woman is consulting about illness and her birth year already includes the Month Aversion, along with the Blood Branch and Blood Taboo, her illness is definitely either blood discharge or miscarriage, and the prediction is especially accurate.
