Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

Whenever the heavenly stem of the year, the month builder, the day branch, the time of divination, and the three transmissions all appear within the four lessons, it is called "Pan Zhu Ke." For example, if the divination is done on the day of Yi Si in the seventh lunar month of the year Jia Zi, at the You hour, using the巳 general, then the heavenly stem of the year, the month builder, the day branch, and the time of divination all fall within the four lessons. This is called "Tian Xin Ge," indicating that the matter being inquired about is of great importance, even reaching the imperial court, and will be successful. Another example is when the divination is done on the day of Xin Hai, with the three transmissions being Xu, You, and Shen, all of which also fall within the four lessons. This is called "Hui Huan Ge," indicating that plans will be realized, and both good and bad events will come to fruition. These two patterns combined resemble pearls rolling in a tray, never going beyond the tray, hence the name "Pan Zhu." It belongs to the body of the Dazhuang hexagram from the Zhou Yi, and is considered a divination pattern where the phoenix soars over the red mountain.

The interpretation says: "Three Transmissions" (the first, middle, and final transmissions, representing the beginning, middle, and end of an event) and "Four Lessons" (the day stem and day branch each combined with the heavenly plate deities they ride, forming four pairs of upper and lower deities) come together in this lesson. This coincidence itself is unusual. If the situation is favorable, blessings will come in double; if the situation is unfavorable, calamities will also come in double. When predicting about thieves, the thieves will not escape the local area; when predicting about distant people, the people will return to their hometown. However, when predicting about private matters or trying to resolve disputes, it tends to be unfavorable. If the deity used on the day branch is strong and timely, and the heavenly general is auspicious, the outcome of the matter will be very favorable. Even if the four lessons are incomplete, as long as one maintains the existing situation and then takes action, it will still be auspicious. If the lesson pattern itself is favorable, all matters will proceed smoothly, which corresponds to the "Zhen Ji" (upright auspiciousness) in the "Zhou Yi" (I Ching) hexagram Dazhuang (Great Strength), reflecting the atmosphere of obtaining auspiciousness by maintaining righteousness.

In addition, there are several variations. The 'Reverse Chant' lesson originally indicates distant travel or matters, but if the first transmission is the Tai Su, and the middle and final transmissions fall on the Month Builder and Day Branch respectively, then distant matters are brought closer, and things that should be delayed are handled quickly. Another example is the 'Cutting the Gate' lesson, where the Day Branch is occupied by the Azure Dragon (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing wealth, honor, and joy) and Liu He (governing harmony, marriage, and trade), and the Initiating Transmission is based on the deity of the time of day, yet the middle and final transmissions both fall on Kongwang, indicating apparent movement without actual change, again showing a preference for near over distant. Only the '昴星 lesson' on an yin day (乙, 丁, 己, 辛, or 癸) represents a pattern of concealment and stillness.

Now consider the overlapping of the year and month builders with the deities of Chen and Xu. If the sovereign year is pressing on the Hekui (the alternative name for the earth branch Xu), or if Xu is pressing on the sovereign year, this is called double yin, and the misfortune concerns women. If the month builder is pressing on the Tiangang (the alternative name for the earth branch Chen), or if Chen is pressing on the month builder, this is called double yang, and the misfortune concerns men. If both Xu and the sovereign year press on the month builder, it is yin covering yang, and the matter occurs within the family. If both the month builder and Chen press on the sovereign year, it is yang covering yin, and the matter occurs outside the family. When encountering these overlapping situations, even if the divine time, the three transmissions, and the person's own birth year and destiny appear favorable on the surface, they should still be judged as ominous.

If the pearl-bead divination is used to predict illness, legal disputes, childbirth, inner doubts, or mediating conflicts, the results are often unfavorable. If the day branch's deity is in a state of captivity or death, and the heavenly general is fierce, then any action will invite misfortune, the mind remains anxious, and calamities become more severe. This corresponds exactly to the hexagram "Da Zhuang" (Great Strength) in the "Zhou Yi" (I Ching), specifically the line "Nine in the Second," which describes a situation where petty people insist on their own strength, and continuing to hold on is dangerous, like a male sheep ramming against a fence, getting its horn stuck and unable to move.

Take an example: In the year Gengxu, the twelfth month (with the month builder being Chou), on the day Jiazi at the hour Chou, the lesson is started with the use of Zi as the initiating transmission. The Zi on the heaven plate is placed on the Chou of the earth plate, and this is taken as the initiating transmission. In this way, the sovereign, the month builder, the day branch, the time of divination, and the three transmissions all appear within the four lessons, each like a pearl in a string, closely arranged. Therefore, this type of lesson is called the pearl lesson.

The layout above is the form of this lesson. The vertical line at the top, from top to bottom, represents the three transmissions: the first transmission is Zi, the middle transmission is Hai, and the final transmission is Xu. The horizontal line below, written as "Xuan Chang Bai Kong," indicates the four heavenly generals governing the four lessons, in order: "Xuan Wu" (governs theft, concealment, darkness), "Tai Chang" (governs clothing, food, banquets, documents), "Bai Hu" (governs roads, illness, death, warfare), and "Tian Kong" (governs falsehood, deception, and emptiness). Below the heavenly generals, the two lines represent the upper and lower deities of the four lessons. The upper line, Wu Hai Zi Chou, are the upper deities, and the lower line, Hai Zi Chou Jia, are the lower deities, with the last character Jia being the day stem. Below that, the twelve characters arranged in a circle represent the fixed positions of the twelve earthly branches on the earth plate, used to determine where the heavenly plate falls. The year, month, day, hour, and the three transmissions are all concentrated within the four lessons, forming the appearance of a pearl disk lesson.

Another example: On the day of Wuzi and the hour of Zi, using the method of Wei Jiang to start the divination, all three transmissions fall within the four lessons. This is called the Huihuan pattern, where the three transmissions go around in a circle and return to the four lessons, indicating that the matter goes through various changes but ultimately returns to its original state.

"Ordering Errors" · Heaven's Heart Pattern

The "Heavenly Heart" pattern occurs when the Reigning Sovereign, Month Builder, Day Branch, and the time of divination all appear together in the four lessons, or all appear together in the three transmissions. This is considered the Heavenly Heart pattern. The three transmissions consist of only three positions, while the four lessons have four. Therefore, the four can all fit into the three transmissions because two of the builders happen to share the same position. For the four lessons to be gathered together is rare, as if Heaven intentionally brings them together, with the intention of fulfilling human affairs. Hence, it is called the Heavenly Heart.

The divination shows a pattern of the Heavenly Heart, indicating that the matters being questioned are of great importance and unusual. If the matter involves serving the court or seeking favor from superiors, it can be accomplished immediately. The three transmissions follow the order of the sovereign, the month builder, the day, and the hour in a progressive sequence, which brings distant matters closer and turns slow matters into quick ones. If the deity used on the day branch is strong and powerful, and the heavenly general is favorable, all things will proceed smoothly: pursuing thieves will result in the thieves not escaping the country; waiting for distant people will result in their return. If the sky void and the Vermilion Bird (which governs documents, messages, and verbal disputes) are present on the sovereign's position, court news will act immediately and the response will be especially accurate. This pattern brings good fortune for auspicious matters, and can be used to divinate illness, lawsuits, private affairs, childbirth, worries, or mediation, turning misfortune into good fortune. However, if the deity used on the day branch is in a state of captivity or death, and the heavenly general is unfavorable, the misfortune will be even more difficult to resolve.

A general divination session.

Whenever all three characters of a Triple Harmony Formation fall into the three transmissions, it is called a complete lesson. If the three transmissions are Shen, Zi, and Chen, forming a water formation, it is called the Moistening Down Pattern. Questions under this pattern often relate to ditches, fish nets, and other water-related matters, and when predicting weather, it indicates rain. If the three transmissions are Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming a fire formation, it is called the Rising Flame Pattern. Questions under this pattern often concern stoves, metalworking, and academic achievements, and when predicting weather, it indicates clear and dry weather. The season should also be considered: in spring and summer, fire is strong and water is weak; in autumn and winter, water is strong and fire is weak. If the formation is in its prosperous and strong state, it is unfavorable for the elderly but favorable for the young; if it is in a state of captivity or death, it is unfavorable for the young but favorable for the elderly. If the initiating transmission has vitality, it indicates the birth of a male child.

The combination of亥, 卯, 未 forms a wood pattern known as Qu Zhi Ge, which is associated with matters concerning boats, vehicles, planting, and construction, and is favorable for initiating new projects. The combination of巳, 酉, 丑 forms a metal pattern known as Cong Ge Ge, which is associated with weapons and metal, and is favorable for making changes. In spring and winter, wood is strong and metal is weak, while in late autumn, metal is strong and wood is weak. When the elements are in their prosperous and strong state, it is suitable to go out and seek opportunities; when they are in a weak state, it is better to stay and maintain existing conditions. If the initiating transmission lacks vitality, it indicates the birth of a female child. If the three transmissions consist of the four earth elements 辰, 戌, 丑, 未, it is called Jia Se Ge. When the earth is strong in late summer, starting a project will be successful, but in autumn and winter when the earth is weak, there may be worries about land and graves. These are all cases where the three divine elements are neatly arranged in the three transmissions, forming a single pattern, hence called a complete pattern. In terms of the hexagram, it corresponds to the Great Accumulation hexagram of the Zhou Changes, representing a lesson pattern where similar elements gather together in harmony.

The interpretation says: The three divine spirits combine to form a pattern,凝聚ing a clear and refined energy; good things will certainly succeed, and even bad things cannot be avoided. Those of high status will receive favor and honor, while ordinary people will gain wealth and joy. This pattern is most suitable for marriage and is highly beneficial for planning and taking action. When seeking wealth, if the three transmissions contain the wealth element, wealth will be easily obtained; when seeking an official position, if the three transmissions contain the official star, the position will be easily achieved. The divine spirits used on the day branch are strong and mutually generating, and the heavenly general is auspicious, which is a great blessing. This precisely corresponds to the upper ninth line of the Great Accumulation hexagram in the Zhou Changes, "What is the heavenly thoroughfare?" — a situation where the path is suddenly open and things are smoothly accomplished.

In reverse, if the day branch's governing deity is weak and the water phase is transmitting in reverse, affairs will be delayed and unsmooth; if the fire phase meets a fire ghost爻, one must beware of fire disasters; if the metal phase encounters blood branches and other凶煞, one should avoid military actions; if the wood phase carries wood怪 deity, one must guard against collapses of earth and wood causing injuries. On days of Wu and Ji, if the initiating transmission falls on the earth branches Chou and Wei, the questions usually relate to land property and houses. If the branches Chou, Xu, and Wei are occupied by the White Tiger, divination on illness indicates death, and on lawsuits indicates imprisonment. This corresponds to the line Nine in the Second of the Great Accumulation hexagram, "the carriage loses its spokes"—a situation where the carriage loses its spokes and cannot move forward.

"Observing the Menstrual Cycle" · Lower Trigram of Moistening and Descending

"The *Observation of the Menstrual Cycle* discusses the *Rùn Xià* trigram, which indicates disputes within the family and cases that cannot be resolved in legal matters. A mnemonic states that if all three transmissions are water, then the *Rùn Xià* trigram is formed. The combination of *Shēn*, *Zǐ*, and *Chén* forms a water pattern, corresponding exactly to the three stages of water: *Chángshēng* (growth) in *Shēn*, *Dìwàng* (prosperity) in *Zǐ*, and *Mùsǐ* (burial/death) in *Chén*. These three branches also carry the ten miscellaneous energies, and outside the main palace there are additional residual energies. When these three combine to form the three transmissions, the *Rùn Xià* trigram is established."

The song continues to say: "Heavenly Empress" (one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, governing women, marriage and love, and private matters) appearing together with Liu He, indicates the arising of private affairs between men and women; when "Yuan Wu" (i.e., Xuan Wu) is in charge, troubles of theft will come. When Heavenly Empress and Liu He are both present, private matters will bring worries; if theft suddenly occurs, the presence of Xuan Wu will add more sorrow. At this time, all kinds of matters are to be avoided, but the path of Ren water flows freely without hindrance. However, even if there are private matters, as long as the lesson contains a saving deity, it can be resolved immediately. The so-called saving deity refers to auspicious deities such as the Three Marvels and the Six Instruments in the lesson; possessing them will turn misfortune into good fortune. For divination concerning rain, this lesson is especially appropriate.

The "Heart Mirror" · Moistening Down

The "Heart Mirror" verse says: If the Initiating Transmission and the Three Transmissions include the elements of Shen, Zi, and Chen, the hexagram is called Runxia, and the reason lies entirely in water. Those seeking divination are mostly about matters concerning ditches and waterways, or else new boats and fishing nets. When divining pregnancy, it can be interpreted as a female fetus; when divining illness, it indicates the interference of water spirits, and one should offer sacrifices and prayers to the water spirits for relief.

The "Golden Treasure in the Sleeve" · Moistening and Descending

The "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: The Shen-Zi-Chen water triple harmony formation indicates that matters are obstructed and one has to submit and accept lower positions. Although water is by nature still, it cannot settle down, so things become complicated. For any triple harmony formation, if either the day stem or day branch combines with a character in the three transmissions to form a Liu He (six harmony), the matter will certainly succeed without any obstacles. Master Shao said: If the three transmissions form a complete triple harmony, and if a god on any of the branches combines with the middle transmission character to form a harmony, then whatever one plans to do will succeed, with no obstacles, and someone will help to facilitate it. However, if one is seeking to conclude or dissolve something, it will not dissolve. If the lesson contains a Heavenly General combined with a harmony, it is also favorable. But if any of the transmissions combines with the stem or branch gods to form a crime, conflict, destruction, or harm, it is called a triple harmony being violated by a killer. In such cases, the harmony is as if it did not exist. Human relationships are good but with hidden harm, which is like the saying that there is a knife hidden in a smile.

In general, this is the case where the righteous energy of the Five Phases falls into a mixed and tangled pattern. Triple Harmony refers to the spirits representing the stages of birth, prosperity, and burial in different directions, so the situation is complex and not pure: it often involves collaboration among many people, or actions taking place simultaneously in three places, or seeking favors through connections and partnerships.

Correcting Errors" · Moistening Down

The "Ding'E" explains the concept of "Run Xia" (moistening and descending): the three transmissions are申, 子, and 辰. Water is born in申, reaches its peak in子, and is buried in辰. Since water is moist and tends to flow downward, it is called "Run Xia." When this pattern appears in a divination, the matter is prolonged and not urgent, indicating hesitation, stagnation, and submission. However, water continues to flow endlessly and cannot be still. If the day stem is wood, water nourishes it, which is considered life qi. If the day stem is metal, metal generates water, which is considered leaking qi. Matters involved are often related to boats, canals, fishing nets, and fish or turtles. Since water flows downward, good or bad fortune usually affects those of low status. In cases of legal disputes, it may involve lower-ranking individuals. For weather, it indicates rain; for pregnancy, it suggests giving birth to a daughter; for illness, it is ominous. This is because辰 is the storage place for water, and it is advisable to pray to the water deity for relief.

Divining a residence, although not entirely凶, indicates that the family's prosperity will be difficult to achieve. Divining documents is unfavorable, as water overcomes fire, which is the element associated with the Vermilion Bird, the ruler of documents. In ordinary divination, when there are many water generals and water spirits, it is also lacking in auspiciousness. The three transmissions should proceed in a forward direction; if they go backward, it violates the natural tendency of water flowing downward, leading to affairs that are reversed and slow. Generally, the moistening and descending nature indicates a person who is unstable and restless in mind. When the Heavenly Empress and Liu He appear together, there will certainly be matters of immorality; when the Black Tortoise appears together, there will certainly be theft. However, water also has its positive aspect: wise people enjoy water, and this chart also shows the image of nourishing all things. It is suitable to take advantage of this opportunity to benefit others.

"Observing the Menstrual Cycle" · The Flame Ascending Hexagram

The "Observing the Menstrual Cycle" (Guan Jing Xue) says that when the three transmissions all belong to fire, the fiery trend is so intense that it reaches the sky. It is suitable for things like kiln firing and metal smelting, where literary achievements and the furnace flame are both vigorous. One should check according to the five family names - Gong, Shang, Jiao, Zhong, Yu - to find where each person's dwelling spirit is located. It is most dangerous when the dwelling spirit collides with the person's current age. If it falls into the fiery trend, it will cause a fire that burns the fields. This refers to damage to documents, and the matters concerned are related to furnace fires, candle flames, and disputes. The dwelling spirit refers to the dwelling position corresponding to each of the five family names: Gong corresponds to Chen, Shang to You, Jiao to Mao, and Yu to Zi. If someone's current age exactly falls on their own dwelling position, a big fire will occur. Moreover, it is not limited to their own home; those of the Yu family will also experience a fire on their current age.

The "Heart Mirror" · "Inflaming Ascending"

The Xin Jing says: Yin, Wu, and Xu form a pattern of the upward fire trigram, and the three transmissions are all names of fire. The day stem deity represents the person in question, and fire is impetuous, so the person's temperament is quick-tempered. The matter concerned relates to the sound of boiling pots and the smelting of metal, and when predicting the weather, it indicates clear skies. If predicting a person's travel, one should beware of disputes and gossip. If predicting a woman's pregnancy, it indicates a male fetus.

The Golden Manual in the Sleeve · Inflammation and Ascension

The *Xiu Zhong Jin* says: The combination of Yin, Wu, and Xu (Fire triad) has more emptiness than substance; things that are clearly evident become obscure. If this combination is used to divinate matters related to smelting or forging, it is highly inauspicious. When Xu is placed over Yin, it signifies that the storage (mùkù) suppresses the growth (chángshēng), which is the worst situation. Fire relies on brightness as its essence; only when there is emptiness in the middle can it burn brightly. Once filled, it becomes dark, losing its original nature. Thus, clear matters turn into obscurity. On a Ren day, fire is originally the wealth hexagram that I overcome, but in reality, it acts as a ghost: fire generates earth, and earth turns back to overcome water, which is called the mother-son ghost. This indicates disputes among family members, which can only be resolved by breaking up. Another view states that fire has an upward nature, so endeavors are mostly unsuccessful.

"Correction of Errors" · "Inflammation and Ascension"

"The Ding'e text says that fire is inflammatory because the three transmissions are 寅, 午, 戌. Fire is born in 寅, prosperous in 午, and buried in 戌. Fire's qi rises upward, so it's called inflammatory. Divination concerns mostly documents. If metal qi is also present in the chart, it indicates forge and metalworking. If the day stem is earth, fire nourishes me, which is life qi. If the day stem is wood, wood nourishes fire, which is leakage qi. Fire like the sun is the image of the sovereign. It is favorable for presenting petitions directly to the sovereign. If the post-horse falls in the virtuous position, it is as if the emperor himself holds power, and officials are appointed with ease. The phrase 'post-horse in the virtuous position' means placing the hour of 辰 on the day stem, and seeing which god the post-horse falls on; that god is the virtuous god. If the personal birth year also meets this, it is even more favorable. For ordinary people, if they divine this, it often indicates oral disputes and unrest at home."

Fire represents the ghost爻 and warns of fire disasters; the Vermilion Bird appearing together warns of legal disputes; the Tian Kong appearing together indicates that the house may collapse. The sick person often has a fever, and the illness is usually in the heart. Seeing the Heavenly Empress and Liu He indicates illness related to the blood in women. When predicting the weather, it is very clear; when predicting a visitor, the person is impetuous and has literary talent; when predicting a traveler, the person will arrive, because fire is active. Lost items are hidden near the stove or furnace. Matters will come quickly, but mostly result in wasted effort, with many empty things and few real results. Some things are started by a group of people who act recklessly and encourage each other, first happy then turning angry, first gathering then dispersing—no matter how fierce the fire burns, it will soon turn to ashes.

The most unfavorable situation is when Wu is placed on Yin, as the Storage (墓库) suppresses the Growth (长生). Fire needs to be in the middle and empty to shine brightly; if it is filled, it becomes dark. When a matter is originally clear, it will turn vague. When Wu is placed on Wu, it indicates losing a horse, because the horse (午) enters the Storage. Wu is also the god of prison, and if the Three Transmissions include Storage, there will be legal troubles and imprisonment. On Ren and Gui days, fire appears as what I overcome (财), but actually it acts as a ghost. Fire generates earth, and earth turns around to overcome water, which is called mother and child ghosts. In divination, this often indicates a split within the family, and the outcome is usually a breakup.

In general, the fire element is suitable for seeing an official in court, as it can clearly distinguish between black and white. If this divination is done in autumn or summer, it indicates that things will be accomplished by relying on a strong momentum. If the divination is done on a day of Geng or Xin, this pattern is called 'carrying a killing,' and the person's intention is mostly about illness or legal matters; if the person's birth year and age are also under the fire deity, then divining about illness indicates death, and divining about litigation indicates a bad outcome. On Xin You day, with寅 placed on Xin and initiating the transmission, it indicates a grudge caused by money.

"Observing the Menstrual Cycle" · Curve and Straight Hexagram

The "Qu Zhí" hexagram song from "Guan Jingxue" says: When all three transmissions belong to wood, this pattern is called Qu Zhí. It is suitable for matters involving ships and vehicles, construction and development, and searching for timber and seedlings. Although some disturbances are inevitable, seeking wealth is not obstructed. All kinds of worries can be resolved, and this is especially favorable in spring, because in spring wood is at its peak strength.

The "Heart Mirror" · Straight and Curved

The Xin Jing says: Curved and straight lines point to the east, taking the image of wood. The three transmissions are formed by the three characters Hai, Mao, and Wei. In divination concerning human affairs, it often relates to wooden rafts, boats, and planting trees; in divination concerning illness, it indicates being afflicted by wind pathogens. When the three characters Hai, Mao, and Wei appear together in the three transmissions, they signify matters related to wind.

The "Golden Treasure in the Sleeve" · Straight and Flexible

The *Xiu Zhong Jin* says: The Wood triad of Hai, Mao, and Wei forms a complete Wood structure. Wood relies on water to have a root. In human affairs, this indicates that one will first suffer委屈 (humiliation or hardship) and later achieve success and expansion. It also suggests encountering situations involving cutting down trees or planting timber. In autumn and winter, when the energy is contracting, the Wood structure is externally cut and internally solid. In spring and summer, when the energy is expanding, the inside is damaged and the outside becomes soft and compliant. The same applies to days of壬, 癸, and 乙. On a day of己, the earth supports the root, making the foundation strong. On a day of丁, fire drains the Wood's energy, causing the branches to wither. On a day of辛, metal cuts and shapes the Wood, turning it into tools. The order of action is first to bend and then to straighten. However, on days of甲, 戊, 丙, and 庚, the curve-straight structure cannot be formed in the divination.

"Curved and Straight" from "Correcting Errors"

The "Disputes and Corrections" text explains the nature of wood as "curved and straight." The three transmissions are亥, 卯, and 未. Wood is born in亥, reaches its peak in卯, and is buried in未. Since wood can both bend and straighten, it is called "curved and straight." When this pattern appears in divination, people often hesitate between advancing and retreating. Once they take action, they feel satisfied, but if they remain inactive, they feel uneasy. This is because wood corresponds to the trigram Zhen, which represents movement. If the day stem is fire, wood nourishes me, which is beneficial energy. If the day stem is water, water nourishes wood, which is leaking energy. The favorable direction is in building boats and carts, repairing and constructing, and planting. Wood relies on water as its root. In autumn and winter, the energy is gathered inward, so although the outside is cut, the inside is full. In spring and summer, the energy is spread out, so the outside is firm while the inside is soft. This applies to days of壬, 癸, and乙. On days of己, the root is strong; on days of丁, the branches are dry and withered; on days of辛, it is considered as wood being shaped into tools.

Divination is most suitable in spring. When the transmission is from below to above, it is straight, such as when Wei is added to Hai. When the transmission is from above to below, it is curved, such as when Hai is added to Wei. When Mao is added to Hai, it is first curved then straight; when Mao is added to Wei, it is first straight then curved. First curved then straight indicates difficulty at the beginning but smoothness later. First straight then curved indicates a beginning but an inability to conclude.

Wood represents wind, and rumors like wind are mostly untrue. When divining illness, it refers to ailments caused by wind pathogen and the liver meridian. It is advisable to seek help from others, ask for the favor of a nobleman, and secretly pray. If亥 is added to卯 and the upper trigram is Vermilion Bird, the expected news will not come, as fire and water are in conflict. If亥 is added to未 and the upper trigram is Teng Snake (indicating fear and strange occurrences), it also signifies internal conflict, leading to loss of wealth. 未 represents silk, mulberry, and textiles. If卯 is added to未 and the upper trigram is White Tiger, it indicates disaster on the body; if it also harms the person's destiny, the prediction is more accurate. If未 is added to卯 and the upper trigram is Heavenly Empress, it indicates disaster for female relatives, signs of separation and crying in the family; lost items are hidden in dense forests or wooden objects. If the curve and straight structure acts as a ghost trigram, it indicates imprisonment in legal matters.

It is said that on a Ji day the foundation is firm because wood is supported by earth and thus becomes rooted. It is also said that on a Ding day the branches and twigs wither because fire drains the vitality of wood. These statements are based on the overall structure of the formation. If instead we consider the relationship between the day stem and the three transmissions in terms of the six relations, then on a Ji day wood becomes the official ghost, and on a Ding day wood becomes the parents. Generally, the straight and flexible formation is favorable to the virtuous and unfavorable to the petty person; the moist and downward formation is the opposite, being unfavorable to the virtuous and favorable to the petty person.

"Observing the Menstrual Cycle" · From the Metal Transforming Hexagram

The divination for the "Observation of the Menstrual Cycle" using the卦 of From-Revolution indicates that the matter in question has many threads, initially encountering obstacles but eventually succeeding. When divining about the family home, it suggests renovation or change, and that female family members may experience separation. When divining about legal matters, it indicates that the officials handling the case will change, and the matter should be handled by female family members to smooth things over. The rhyme says: if all three transmissions belong to metal, the spirit of From-Revolution is generated; this situation is most unfavorable for military affairs, as it is feared that there will be bloodshed. Seeking wealth can result in obtaining treasures, and long journeys are suitable for mutual searching. Seeking wealth repeatedly brings prosperity, and various misfortunes are difficult to affect.

The "Heart Mirror" · From Reform

The Xin Jing says: Si, You, and Chou form a trinity associated with the革卦 (Revolution trigram), symbolizing a situation of weapons clashing, and belonging to the metal element. This configuration often indicates the need to discard the old and establish new, such as setting up a new household or buying property. In matters of illness, it suggests injuries to bones and joints or lung ailments. This trinity also indicates separation from female relatives. In matters of official positions, it suggests the removal of old regulations and the establishment of new ones.

The "Golden Treasure in the Sleeve" · From Reform

The Xiu Zhong Jin says: The Si-You-Chou metal triad signifies a situation where one is ahead and one is behind, with some following and some changing. When predicting human affairs, it indicates matters related to weapons and metal objects, which have already been decided and cannot be changed. The four categories of affairs—curved and straight, ascending fire, descending moisture, and changing metal—collectively are called "tui mo," meaning they turn like a grinding stone, with one matter going away and another coming in continuously, never ceasing. One must have a favorable general in charge, and someone must act as an intermediary to facilitate the matter.

All cases of Triple Harmony Formation, Linked Grains Pattern, and the four central directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You forming a complete pattern require the efforts of a group of people to accomplish, needing repeated attempts ten times or more. The characteristics of each pattern are: the curved and straight type first bends then straightens, the from-reform type first complies then changes, the fiery type has a shadow but no form, the moist type once gone never returns, and the farming type is full of difficulties everywhere, with no clear direction in doing things.

The "Pointer to the Essentials" · From Reform

The Classic of Essential Points cites a passage stating: Discussing the卦 of From-Revolution, if the metal energy is prosperous and strong and is accompanied by auspicious deities, it indicates a significant transformation, leading to blessings of wealth and honor; but if it conflicts with the year's ruler and the month builder, and is joined by the Teng Snake and White Tiger, it foretells misfortune such as death and warfare. If the day stem falls in a state of captivity or death, there is an indication of moving westward, and going in that direction will be beneficial. When the From-Revolution is arranged in the order of You, Chou, and Si, if the metal energy is strong, it will undergo transformation while advancing; if the metal energy is weak, it will deteriorate further. Matters that have already shown signs and seem about to succeed will certainly encounter obstacles in the middle, resulting in unsmoothness.
