Crossing the river through mud, number forty-six.
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
Crossing the river is most dangerous when the day branch is harmed by the divine. For water routes, the day branch is considered, and for land routes, the day stem is considered, with each evaluated separately. If the sovereign year is occupied by Shenhou Zi, it indicates a shipwreck. If the day stem and day branch are attacked by the upper and lower divine forces, vehicles and boats will be damaged. If the day stem meets Tiangang or Taichong, it indicates strong winds and big waves. If the divine on the day branch attacks the day branch itself, it indicates being trapped in mud and suffering misfortune. When an army moves through foreign lands, to avoid the dangers of crossing water and getting stuck in mud, the day branch represents the water route and the day stem represents the land route. For those crossing the river, the most dangerous situation is when the divine on the day branch attacks the day branch or when the day branch attacks the divine on the day branch, both indicating the danger of drowning. If Shenhou Zi is placed on the sovereign year, it indicates a shipwreck. If the day branch is water and the day stem is land, Taichong卯 placed on the day stem represents a vehicle, and placed on the day branch represents boats and oars, which are the tools for traveling and sailing. If卯 is placed on both the day stem and day branch and is attacked by the divine on the earth plate, vehicles and boats will be damaged. If Tiangang and Taichong are placed on the day stem and day branch, it indicates a great storm that will capsize the boat. The "Weapons and Armaments Assignment" says, "The day is afraid of Tiangang and Taichong; if the sovereign year is affected by the void, disaster will arise." This refers to Shenhou being placed on the sovereign year. If the divine on the day branch harms or attacks the day branch and the year's birth star, and is accompanied by evil Heavenly Generals, it is unfavorable for crossing water or getting stuck in mud.
The heavenly river and earthly well are adjacent, which is an ill omen for boat travel; encountering the earth demon and the Touch Water Dragon indicates worry about crossing the river. If the day branch has a beneficial deity, even if the day stem is harmed, the boat can still cross safely. As for muddy areas and water pits, just follow the direction indicated by the Tiangang, and there is no need to worry. The heavenly three rivers are壬, 癸, and 子; the earthly three wells are 卯, 酉, and 辰. When the month general is placed on the correct hour to form the heaven plate, if any of the three rivers fall onto the three wells, the boat cannot be crossed. The formula for the earth demon and the Jade Emperor demon says: in the year of Zi and Chou, the earth demon is in the Xun palace; in the year of Wei, it is also there; in the years of Yin and Mao, it is in the Kun palace; in the years of Chen and Si, it is in the Qian palace; in the year of Wu, it is in the Kan palace; in the year of Wei, it is in the Zhen palace; in the years of Shen and You, it is in the Li palace; in the years of Xu and Hai, it is in the Gen palace. The opposite palace of the earth demon is where the Jade Emperor demon roams. Another version says: the positions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the earth demons. The days of Bingzi, Guiwei, and Guichou are called the Touch Water Dragon days. The book says: on the day of the earth demon, it is not advisable to walk on muddy ground; on the day of the Touch Water Dragon, it is not advisable to cross rivers. The day branch represents the waterway; if the deity on the day branch is beneficial, then even if the day stem is harmed, crossing the river is still possible. When encountering muddy and difficult terrain, just follow the direction where the Tiangang is located, and you will find a dry path.
Water Warfare and Observing the Wind, Fourth十七th
Water battles rely heavily on favorable wind and current directions, so one must carefully examine the Day Stem for the presence of Xiaoji (Wei) and Taiyi (Si). The White Tiger is the heavenly general governing wind; when it encounters劫杀 (sudden attack), 飞廉 (Flying廉), or 大杀 (great destruction), it indicates the onset of wind. If the Day Stem is prosperous and strong and is accompanied by theseInauspicious Sha (malevolent forces), wind will quickly arise. However, if the Day Stem is weak and confined and not accompanied by theseInauspicious Sha, wind is unlikely to occur, and one cannot rely on it for power. Although sailing is generally unfavorable when encountering wind, water battles must utilize wind to enhance their strength. Si is the gate of wind, and Wei is the wind deity; the presence of these two deities in the Day Stem and Day Branch indicates the presence of wind. The White Tiger, as the wind deity, when encountering劫杀, 飞廉, or 大杀, signifies a sudden and fierce wind. If the Day Stem is prosperous and strong and is accompanied by these wind-relatedInauspicious Sha, wind will quickly arise. If the Day Stem is weak and confined and not accompanied by theseInauspicious Sha, there will be no wind. The arrangement of 飞廉 is as follows: in the first lunar month it is in Xu, in the second in Si, in the third in Wu, in the fourth in Wei, in the fifth in Shen, in the sixth in You, in the seventh in Chen, in the eighth in Hai, in the ninth in Zi, in the tenth in Chou, in the eleventh in Yin, and in the twelfth in Mao.
The term "Ban Shen" refers to the White Tiger. When the White Tiger moves to the eastern positions of Yin and Mao, which are wood, the wind is set in motion. Then, when it meets Xiao Ji at Wei, the wind rises quickly and strongly. However, if these deities suddenly fall into the Kongwang position, which is the empty host, and the upper deity overcomes the lower deity, then the wind should stop. The term "Ban Shen" is the White Tiger. "East movement" means the White Tiger enters the ground positions of Yin and Mao. When the tiger roars, the wind arises. Wei is also the Wind God, so when the White Tiger rides on Wei, there must be a great wind. The three deities mentioned in the verse refer to the White Tiger and the two deities at Wei and Si. "Qian Kong Su" means that if these deities ride into Kongwang, and the upper deity overcomes the lower deity, then the wind cannot rise.
The fire positions of Si and Wu have the Vermilion Bird, and the lesson pattern forms a curved and straight wood structure, so wind has its root. Then, according to the month, we calculate the wind killer, and see if it falls on the day stem, day branch, or the initiating transmission. If it also meets the wood of Yin, then a fierce typhoon will arise in a moment. Si and Wu belong to the fire god, and the Vermilion Bird is also a fire god. When heat reaches its peak, wind arises, and the Vermilion Bird falling into Si and Wu is like returning to its nest. The classic says, "穴居的动物知道要下雨,巢居的鸟知道要起风" which means "animals living in holes know when it will rain, and birds living in nests know when wind will arise." This is exactly the principle. The wind god, calculated by the month, starts at Shen in the first month and moves backward through the twelve earthly branches. The wind killer, also calculated by the month, starts at Yin in the first month and moves backward through the twelve earthly branches. If these two evils appear on the initiating transmission and the day stem and day branch, and meet the Vermilion Bird, it indicates a strong wind. Shen is the wind god, and Yin contains Ji Xu mansion which is favorable for wind, so when these two deities meet, it also indicates a strong wind. However, if they fall on Kongwang, the wind will be weak.
Appendix on Divination of Wind, Rain, and Miscellaneous Phenomena
The Earthly Branch Si is the gate of wind, Wei is the wind god, and Baihu is the wind deity. If they initiate the transmission and have strength, they indicate wind; if they also involve punishment, the wind becomes fierce and swift. If Baihu falls in the East, it is called "Chu Lin," indicating wind. If it is combined with Xiaoji (Wei), the wind becomes even stronger. If Yin and Shen are added to the Day Stem and are placed before Tianyi Guiren, they also indicate wind, and wind will arise at the position of Wei. If the Three Transmissions contain Baihu, and it is combined with a strong deity and falls on a strong ground, and the lower deity overcomes the upper deity, it certainly indicates a great wind. If one wants to know from which direction the wind comes, look at which deity Baihu is riding upon. For example, if Baihu is riding on Hai and falls on You, it indicates a wind from the Due West; if it falls on Mao, it indicates a wind from the Due East; other cases follow the same pattern. Even if Baihu is riding on Xiaoji, but it is overcome and falls on Kongwang, and the upper deity overcomes the lower deity, then the wind will be very weak.
The trigram Kan represents rain, with the stems Ren and Gui, the branches Hai and Zi, and the spirits Xuanwu and Tianhou belonging to the category of Kan. The trigram Li represents clear weather, with the stems Bing and Ding, the branches Si and Wu, and the spirits Teng Snake and Zhu Que belonging to the category of Li. If spirits of the Kan category appear on the day stem, day branch, and initiating transmission, it indicates rain. If spirits of the Li category appear on the day stem, day branch, and initiating transmission, it indicates clear weather. The trigram Xun represents wind, with the branches Chen and Si, and the spirits Gou Chen and Teng Snake belonging to the category of Xun. The trigram Zhen represents thunder, with the stems Jia and Yi, the branch Mao, and the spirit Liu He belonging to the category of Zhen. If spirits of the Xun category appear on the day stem, day branch, and initiating transmission, it indicates wind. If spirits of the Zhen category appear on the day stem, day branch, and initiating transmission, it indicates thunder.
If the deities of Hai and Zi, along with the Azure Dragon, are in the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions and they刑克 the Day Stem or the deity on the Day Stem, it indicates rain. If they are not in the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions, there will be no rain. When Hai and Zi are placed upon Si, Wu, Wei, or Shen, it indicates the rising of water and the descending of fire, suggesting continuous rain for several days. If Hai and Zi are in their旺气 (strong position), it indicates heavy rain; if they are placed upon Shen or You, it also indicates heavy rain. If they are accompanied by Gou Chen, it indicates prolonged and continuous rain; in winter, it indicates thick accumulation of snow. There will be no rain if they fall into Kongwang or if they are placed upon a earth position and are controlled by earth. If they retreat to the north, it indicates returning to rivers and lakes, also resulting in no rain.
Azure Dragon riding on Shen and You indicates rain, and this is not discussed in terms of generating and overcoming. Because Shen is the source of water, and You is the marsh of the Dui trigram. If they are also in a prosperous and strong state, the rain will be heavier. Azure Dragon riding in prosperity and rising up indicates heavy rain — so called rising up means it is present over Si, Wu, Wei, and Shen. Azure Dragon riding on Hai, Zi, and Chou is considered to be playing in rivers and lakes, unable to summon clouds and change weather, indicating no rain, and the same applies when it is in the墓 (burial) state. Teng Snake entering Hai, Zi, and Chou and causing changes indicates rain. White Tiger appearing on Hai and Zi also indicates heavy rain and storms.
In general, both the White Tiger and the Azure Dragon should be considered together with the Heavenly Stems they are associated with: the White Tiger with Jia and Yi, which first brings wind and then rain; the Azure Dragon with Geng, Xin, Wu, and Ji, which first brings rain and then wind. To determine the day of rain, take the Earthly Branch that can control it, use the Five Elements Method to deduce the Heavenly Stem, and the day when the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch clash is the day of rain. The first transmission indicates the direction from which the rain comes and where the clouds originate, while the final transmission indicates the day the rain stops. When Zi and Mao are added together, there is rain; if the Black Tortoise on Zi is added to Hai and Zi, it is called entering the cave, indicating rain, which is said to mean 'the cave knows when it rains.' When the Net Mansion combines with the Rain God, it indicates heavy rain; when the moon reaches the Net Mansion, it indicates continuous rainy weather.
The Fourth十八th Case: Border Tribes Invade the Borders
Using the hierarchy of the day stem and day branch to distinguish between the Central Plains and the barbarians: if the god on the day stem harms the god on the day branch, our side will overcome the barbarians; if the god on the day branch harms the god on the day stem, the strong enemy will be arrogant and rebellious. If the day stem receives a prosperous and strong god that generates it, while the day branch receives a dead or trapped god, the barbarians will scatter and retreat on their own. Also, using the day's conflicts and virtues to determine the strength of both sides; if the first transmission belongs to the barbarians and the middle transmission belongs to our side, and our side can control the other side, we can subdue the barbarians. The day stem is superior, and the day branch is inferior, so the day stem represents the Central Plains and the day branch represents the barbarians, which is a fixed principle. If the god on the day stem harms the god on the day branch, it is a sign that our side will overcome the barbarians; if the god on the day branch harms the god on the day stem, it indicates the strong enemy is arrogant and rebellious. If the day stem overcomes the god on the day branch or directly overcomes the day branch, the Central Plains will win; if the day branch overcomes the god on the day stem or directly overcomes the day stem, the barbarians will become rampant. If the day stem receives a mutually generating and prosperous god, while the day branch receives a dead, trapped, or empty god, the barbarians will scatter and retreat, unable to continue the fight and will return.
This passage discusses the distinction of superiority and inferiority between the day stem and day branch. Only the books "Ling Xia Jing" and "Bing Ji Jing Yue Fang" use the concepts of punishment (刑) and virtue (德) to differentiate between the Central Plains and the nomadic tribes. Punishment refers to the day punishment, and virtue refers to the day virtue. Virtue can overcome punishment, indicating victory for the Central Plains; punishment can overcome virtue, indicating victory for the nomadic tribes. One must also examine whether the positions of virtue and punishment fall on the earth plate in a generating or overcoming relationship. If both are subject to punishment and overcoming, it is not a good omen.
Then can the three transmissions be dispensed with? Of course not. In the three transmissions, the first transmission represents foreign tribes, and the final transmission represents the country itself. If the first and second transmissions are prosperous and strong, and they generate the final transmission, it indicates that there are traitors within the country colluding with foreign tribes. If the second and final transmissions are prosperous and strong, and they overcome the first transmission, it suggests that the enemy has reached the border but will retreat on their own. If the final transmission lacks strength but generates the first transmission, then the army should withdraw and remain vigilant, as there may be people digging through walls to steal property. In summary, both the divine and the general are considered auspicious if they can control the day's criminal influence and the day's branch.
However, the nature of the夷狄 is hard to predict, and the customs and geography vary in different regions. Therefore, one should determine their nature based on the divine spirits associated with the initiating transmission. If the initiating transmission is亥 or 子, it indicates the northern狄; if it is巳 or 午, it indicates the southern蛮; if it is申 or 酉, it indicates the western戎; if it is寅 or 卯, it indicates the eastern虏; if it falls on辰, 戌, 丑, or 未, they are mixed groups of the苗 people. Regarding their nature: seeing 子 indicates greed, as it is associated with 贪狼;亥 and 卯 are阴贼, indicating secret plundering; 寅 and 午 indicate bravery; 丑 and 戌 indicate fairness; 巳 and 酉 indicate tolerance; 辰 and 未 indicate deceit, indicating capturing people. As for the heavenly generals, Teng Snake indicates cruelty; Vermilion Bird and Tian Kong indicate deceit and smooth talk; Gou Chen indicates a fondness for killing; Tai Yin and Heavenly Empress indicate secretive and weak natures. Therefore, the direction is divided into north and south along the line of 子 and 午, and the nature is determined by the divine spirits associated with the transmission. Once one knows their nature and their location, it is possible to prepare in advance and conquer them, which is not difficult at all.
Eliminate all bandits and rebels, number forty-nine.
To determine the outcome of a battle against bandits, the result depends entirely on the general commanding the first transmission. If the day virtue controls the day crime, or if the crime generates the virtue, and the heavenly general rides the sovereign year to control the black tortoise, while the soul of the person's birth year controls the white tiger, and the qian trigram is positioned at the enemy's location to subdue the earth's spirits, then the enemy will surrender. Heaven intends to destroy these bandits, and when the army departs, the three transmissions will assist, ensuring great achievements. For a divination about quelling bandits, use the heavenly general commanded by the initiating transmission to determine the outcome: if it is a favorable general, victory is assured; if it is an unfavorable general, defeat is certain. If the day virtue controls the day crime, and the crime generates the virtue, the enemy will submit without fighting. If the heavenly general rides the sovereign year and is positioned in a strong direction, this indicates the emperor is in a favorable position, leading to the complete pacification of the land. The black tortoise represents the bandits, and the sovereign year controlling it signifies the central region's victory over foreign invaders. If the general's birth year and destiny can control the white tiger, the qian trigram is positioned at the enemy's location, and it controls the upper spirits, then the bandits will surrender and be destroyed, ensuring great achievements. Regarding the qian trigram being positioned at the enemy's location, there are three interpretations: one says there must be a spirit controlling the qian trigram, another says the heavenly general controls the spirits below the qian trigram, and now it is said that the qian trigram itself controls the spirits below. Whenever the heavenly general can control the qian trigram, it only occurs when the day stem is either xin, ren, or gui.
After returning victorious, he received an imperial decree on the fifth day of the tenth month.
When a general returns victorious to the court, one must assess whether the ministers are loyal and supportive. If the Tai Su (Year God) generates the general's natal stem, the emperor will surely be pleased. If the Tai Su and Tai Yin are prosperous and strong, generating the general's natal year, then the imperial harem and close ministers will secretly support him. If the god following the Tai Su supports the natal year, it indicates that the prime ministers will assist the general. If the Month Builder (Month God) is born on the day stem, it means the marquises and dukes will support him. However, if the day stem is in a weak and confined state, misfortune will come. If the Tai Su and Month Builder also conflict and harm, it means the ministers and officials will obstruct him, and no one will speak well of him. If the day stem and day branch are prosperous and strong, and the divination includes auspicious patterns such as three yangs, three lights, and casting a seal, along with the Month General and Long De (Dragon Virtue) generating the natal year and day stem, then great achievements will be recorded in bronze bells and tripods, and the emperor's favor will be abundant.
The border tribes have already been subdued, and it is the proper time to return to the capital and commemorate the achievement. However, it is still uncertain whether the ministers in court are genuinely convinced. If the divination shows that the heavenly stem of the current year supports the general's natal stem, the wise emperor will be very pleased. If the heavenly stem and Tai Yin are prosperous and strong, supporting the general's natal stem, it indicates that the empress, concubines, and trusted ministers are secretly assisting. The so-called trusted ministers are those the emperor has always been close to and trusted. If the god following the heavenly stem supports the natal stem, the prime ministers will also support from the side. If the month builder is the same as the day stem, the marquises and dukes will constantly assist. Thus, the sentiments of the court officials can be clearly seen.
If the day stem falls in a weak and confined position, misfortune is likely to come; if the heavenly stem of the year and the month builder also conflict and overcome it, then ministers and officials will conspire against you, reluctant even to grant titles, how dare you hope for a marquisate? Only when the day stem and day branch are prosperous and strong, and are accompanied by spirits with vitality, and the lesson contains auspicious patterns such as three yang, three brightness, casting the seal, and dragon virtue, and the month general again generates the day stem, then the favor is profound and extreme.

The Complete Liuren, Volume Six: Host Degree and Regional Divisions
The twelve palaces (or mansions) in the system of divination, each associated with a specific area or domain.

Therefore, there are twenty-seven initial degrees. Adding these twenty-seven initial degrees to the previous three hundred and thirty-eight degrees results in a total of three hundred and sixty-five degrees, which completes the full circle of the sky.
Regarding the concept of "chudu" or "initial degree," different historical calendars have varying interpretations. Generally, it should be considered as one degree. Ancient calendar texts state that each degree is divided into thirty-two parts. The "chudu" refers to the completion of these thirty-two parts, and the first degree begins at the thirty-third part. The second and third degrees are calculated in the same way. The calendar text says that the entire celestial sphere consists of three hundred sixty-five degrees and one fourth of a degree. This means each degree is divided into thirty-two parts, and each degree is further divided into four equal parts, with each part being eight smaller parts. The term "one fourth of a degree" refers to the fact that a degree consists of thirty-three parts, and one fourth of that is eight parts. When combined, the total is three hundred sixty-five degrees plus eight parts. The sun moves through one degree and a little more each day, so in a year it completes exactly three hundred sixty-five degrees plus the remaining eight parts.

This is a mnemonic that assigns the twenty-eight constellations to the twelve earthly branches. The twenty-eight constellations are the star regions divided by ancient people along the Yellow Path and the celestial equator; "fengye" refers to associating these star regions with the states and provinces on earth, and with the twelve palaces represented by the twelve earthly branches. The following is the meaning of each line of the mnemonic: the entire constellations of Jiao Xu and Kang Xu, plus the first degree of Di Xu, belong to the branch of Chen; from the second degree of Di Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Fang Xu, Xin Xu, and Wei Xu, belong to the branch of Mao; from the third degree of Wei Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Ji Xu and Dou Xu, belong to the branch of Yin; from the fourth degree of Dou Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Niu Xu and Nu Xu, belong to the branch of Chou; from the second degree of Nu Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Xu Xu and Wei Xu, belong to the branch of Zi; from the thirteenth degree of Wei Xu onwards, belong to the branch of Hai; the constellations of Shi Xu, Bi Xu, and the first degree of Kui Xu also belong to the branch of Hai; from the second degree of Kui Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Lou Xu and Wei Xu, belong to the branch of Xu; from the fourth degree of Wei Xu onwards until the sixth degree of Bi Xu, all belong to the branch of You (the term "chan" refers to the path of the sun, moon, and stars); from the seventh degree of Bi Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Zi Xu, Can Xu, and Jing Xu, belong to the branch of Shen; from the ninth degree of Jing Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Gui Xu and Liu Xu, belong to the branch of Wei; from the fourth degree of Liu Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Xing Xu and Zhang Xu, belong to the branch of Wu; from the fifteenth degree of Zhang Xu onwards, along with the beginning of Yi Xu (written as "Yi" in the song) and Zhen Xu, belong to the branch of Si; from the tenth degree of Zhen Xu onwards, it returns to the branch of Chen, and the twelve branches thus cycle repeatedly.

"Wei" and "Shouyu Qianhu Su" were both military garrisons of the Ming dynasty, with one Wei consisting of approximately five thousand six hundred people and one Qianhu Su consisting of approximately one thousand one hundred twenty people. In this context, all were assigned to the celestial regions based on their location.

The provincial administration of Shanxi includes five prefectures, one of which belongs to the celestial regions of Weisu, Maomao, and Bishu, while the remaining four prefectures belong to Zizhu and Censhu. Among the nineteen states under its jurisdiction, four belong to Weisu, Maomao, and Bishu, while fifteen belong to Zizhu and Censhu. Of the seventy-eight counties, seven belong to Weisu, Maomao, and Bishu, while seventy-one belong to Zizhu and Censhu. There are nine border garrisons, all belonging to Weisu, Maomao, and Bishu, and four defense commanderies, all belonging to Zizhu and Censhu. It is evident that the whole province of Shanxi mainly falls under the celestial regions of Zizhu and Censhu, with only the northern area of Datong belonging to Weisu, Maomao, and Bishu. This aligns with the old saying that Censhu was regarded as the celestial sign of the state of Jin.
The provincial administration of Henan oversees eight prefectures, two of which belong to the territories of Jiao Xu and Kang Xu, one belongs to Di Xu, Fang Xu, and Xin Xu, three belong to Shi Xu and Bi Xu, and two belong to Liu Xu, Xing Xu, and Zhang Xu. Among the twelve states under its jurisdiction, three belong to Jiao and Kang, one belongs to Di, Fang, and Xin, one belongs to Wei, Mao, and Bi, and seven belong to Liu, Xing, and Zhang. Among the ninety-six counties, thirty-four belong to Jiao and Kang, twelve belong to Di, Fang, and Xin, thirteen belong to Shi and Bi, two belong to Wei, Mao, and Bi, and thirty-five belong to Liu, Xing, and Zhang. Henan is located at the center of the world, where all four directions converge, so within this province, the territories span five groups of star mansions, more than any other province.

The eight prefectures under the jurisdiction of the Shaanxi Department of Civil Administration all belong to the territories of the Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion. Among the twenty-one states under its jurisdiction, twenty states belong to the territories of the Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion, while one state belongs to the territories of the Willow Mansion, the Star Mansion, and the Extended Net Mansion. Among the ninety-six counties under its jurisdiction, ninety-five counties belong to the territories of the Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion, while one county belongs to the territories of the Willow Mansion, the Star Mansion, and the Extended Net Mansion—the original text's "桞" is an alternate character for "柳." The single military command office of the Border Commandery also belongs to the territories of the Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion. The twenty-two garrison towns, three military and civilian garrisons, ten garrison towns for defense, two garrison towns for defense, and thirty-five garrisons for defense all belong to the territories of the Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion. The Well Mansion and the Ghost Mansion govern the region of Qín, and Shaanxi is the ancient homeland of the State of Qin, so the entire province is almost entirely within the territory of these two mansions.
The Lake Region and Guangdong Provincial Administration Office governs fifteen prefectures, all of which belong to the celestial regions of Yi Xu and Zhen Xu. Among the nineteen states under its jurisdiction, two states belong to the celestial regions of Liu Xu, Xing Xu, and Zhang Xu, while seventeen states belong to Yi Xu and Zhen Xu. Among the one hundred and seven counties, two counties belong to Liu Xu, Xing Xu, and Zhang Xu, while one hundred and five counties belong to Yi Xu and Zhen Xu. In addition, two military and civilian commissioners' offices, four pacification offices, nine安抚 offices, and twenty-four long official offices that govern the southern-western native officials are all included in the celestial regions of Yi Xu and Zhen Xu. The celestial regions of Yi Xu and Zhen Xu are the ones that govern the state of Chu, and the Lake Region and Guangdong area is the ancient territory of the state of Chu, so the entire province belongs to the same celestial region.
The governor-general's office of Sichuan Province administers nine prefectures, four military and civilian prefectures, twenty-one states, and one hundred and twelve counties, all falling under the celestial regions of Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion. The term "military and civilian prefecture" refers to administrative units that oversee both civil affairs and military affairs of the garrisons, mostly established in border areas. The single headquarters of the vice-commandery of the military command, nine garrisons, six military and civilian garrisons, and eighteen garrisons for defense and protection are also all within the regions of Well and Ghost Mansions. In addition, the single office of the commissioner for pacification, three offices of the commissioner for pacification and guidance, six offices of the commissioner for安抚, and forty offices of the commissioner for local affairs, which oversee the ethnic minorities, are also included within the regions of Well and Ghost Mansions. Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces were both former territories of the ancient state of Qin, so their celestial regions are entirely the same, with no exceptions anywhere in the province.
The Zhejiang Provincial Administration's jurisdiction included eleven prefectures, one state, and seventy-five counties, as well as six border towns' guards and twenty-three garrisons for defense, all falling under the territories of the Dipper and Ox mansions. The Jiangxi Provincial Administration's jurisdiction included thirteen prefectures, one state, and seventy-seven counties, also entirely within the territories of the Dipper and Ox mansions. The Fujian Provincial Administration's jurisdiction included eight prefectures, one state, and fifty-eight counties, plus two border towns' guards, also entirely within the territories of the Dipper and Ox mansions. The Dipper and Ox mansions were traditionally associated with the lands of Wu and Yue, and since Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian all fall within this area, there is no part of these three provinces that belongs to any other mansion. It is also notable that Zhejiang's coastal areas suffered frequent倭患 (Japanese pirates), resulting in as many as twenty-three garrisons for defense, far exceeding the number in inland Jiangxi.
The Guangdong Department of Civil Administration governs ten prefectures, of which eight belong to the celestial regions of Dipper and Ox, and two belong to Wings and Chariot. Among the eight subordinate states, six belong to Dipper and Ox, and two belong to Wings and Chariot. Of the seventy-five counties, sixty-four belong to Dipper and Ox, and eleven belong to Wings and Chariot. The four military commands of the border towns all belong to Dipper and Ox; among the twenty-one garrisons of defense, nineteen belong to Dipper and Ox, and one belongs to Wings and Chariot. The eastern part of Guangdong was formerly part of the Baiyue, thus following the celestial regions of Dipper and Ox from Wu-Yue; the western part borders Guangxi and is geographically close to ancient Chu, thus shifting to the celestial regions of Wings and Chariot.

All fifty states under its jurisdiction belong to the regions of Wings and Chariot mansions. Among the forty-nine counties, five counties belong to the regions of Dipper and Ox mansions, and forty-four counties belong to the regions of Wings and Chariot mansions. The one garrison town and four native chieftaincies in the border towns also belong to the regions of Wings and Chariot mansions. The entire territory of Guangxi is almost entirely within the celestial region of Chu, except for a few states and counties in the eastern part, which are adjacent to Guangdong and still belong to the celestial regions of Wu-Yue, namely Dipper and Ox mansions.

The three border garrisons, two military and civilian garrisons, and four defending and governing thousand-household offices in the border towns also belonged to the regions of Well and Ghost Mansions. The nine military and civilian pacification commissioners' offices, three pacification commissioner's offices, two pacification offices, and twenty-four chief offices responsible for local officials were also all assigned to the regions of Well and Ghost Mansions. The offices of pacification commissioner's office, pacification office, pacification office, and chief office were the four levels of local officials in the Ming Dynasty, arranged in a hierarchical system from highest to lowest. Here, all these offices were classified according to the location of their headquarters under the Star Mansion region. Although Yunnan was located far to the southwest in the Ming Dynasty, star diviners still included it together with Sichuan and Shaanxi in the region of Qin. Therefore, the entire province had no other affiliated regions.
The Guizhou Department of Civil Administration governs ten prefectures, one of which belongs to the celestial regions of Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion, another belongs to Willow Mansion, Star Mansion, and Extended Net Mansion, and eight belong to Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion. It also governs eight states, all of which belong to the regions of Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion. Among the fourteen counties, two belong to the regions of Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion, one belongs to Willow Mansion, Star Mansion, and Extended Net Mansion, and eleven belong to Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion. The twelve border garrisons, three military and civilian garrisons, and twelve guard and defense thousand households all belong to the regions of Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion. Regarding native officials, one office of the Commissioner of Pacification belongs to the regions of Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion; two offices of the Commissioner of Pacification, one belongs to Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion, and the other belongs to Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion; among the eighty-two offices of the Chief Office, twenty-six belong to Well Mansion and Ghost Mansion, six belong to Willow Mansion, Star Mansion, and Extended Net Mansion, and fifty belong to Wings Mansion and Chariot Mansion. Guizhou is located at the junction of Sichuan, Hubei, and Guangxi, so its regions are divided among these three areas. The number of Chief Offices is the highest among all provinces.
The Differences and Similarities Between the Qintianjian and the Tang and Jin Chronicles in Divination
The current division of states and prefectures by the Imperial Astronomical Bureau is largely consistent with that recorded in the "Tang Shu · Tianwen Zhi." However, the division for the State of Zheng requires clarification: originally, the territory of Zheng was within the royal domain of the Zhou dynasty, overlapping with the administrative divisions of the Zhou state. Therefore, when determining the astrological jurisdiction for prefectures and counties located at the boundary between the Zhou and Zheng divisions, both Zhou and Zheng jurisdictions should be considered. Now, places such as Meng, Ying, Guang, Huang, Zhou, and Meng are included in the Zheng division. Among these, Meng originally belonged to the Zhou division, but it was granted to the State of Zheng by the Zhou king in ancient times, so this assignment has some basis. However, it is important to note that the "Huang" mentioned here refers to the ancient State of Huang, which is now part of Guangzhou, not the Huangzhou in Huguang, and these two should not be confused. Additionally, the boundary between the Zhou and Zheng divisions does not extend south to the Yangtze River; the Yangtze River region belongs to the State of Chu. This distinction must be clearly understood today.
The "Book of Jin · Records of Astronomy" states that the Bingzhou region corresponds to the territory of the State of Wei, Yizhou to that of the State of Jin, Yanzhou to that of the State of Zheng, Yuzhou to that of the State of Song, and Xuzhou to that of the State of Lu. If we re-examine the assignments of the various commanderies according to the accounts in the "Book of Tang" and the "Book of Jin," then Bingzhou should belong to the territory of the State of Jin, Yizhou originally belonged to the State of Qin's Liangzhou, Yanzhou should be regarded as the former territory of Lu, and the State of Zheng should be associated with the territory of the Zhou dynasty in Yuzhou. Since the Zhou dynasty's territory is now fixed in the area of the three rivers—Hein, Hedong, and Henan—the assignment of Zheng to Yuzhou becomes clear. Although the State of Song extended over both Xuzhou and Yuzhou, it controlled more land in Xuzhou, so it should be associated with Xuzhou. The assignments of Bingzhou, Yizhou, Yanzhou, Yuzhou, and Xuzhou are based on the "Book of Tang"; the assignments of the other regions follow the "Book of Jin · Records of Astronomy."

The region governed by theZi Palace (Zi) is associated with the female mansion (女宿), the emptiness mansion (虚宿), and the rooftop mansion (危宿), which belong to the territory of the state of Qi. These three mansions are positioned in the Zi position, starting from the second degree of the female mansion up to the eleventh degree of the rooftop mansion, corresponding to the land of Qi on earth, which is the ancient Qingzhou among the Nine Provinces.
