Prosperous Conception Pattern
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
Whenever both the husband and wife's natal years fall into the Triple Harmony position during a prosperous and strong period, it is called the Prosperous Conception Pattern. Triple Harmony refers to three branches that belong to the same category but are located in different directions, looking at each other from a distance. When they coincide with a prosperous season, it naturally indicates conception, hence the term Prosperous Conception Pattern. To determine the time of conception: for example, if the wife's natal year is巳 (originally written as '己', which should be '巳'), it indicates conception on the first day of the first lunar month at the hour of Shen. The method is to take the heavenly stem of the wife's natal year and count back three positions to determine the month of conception. The day of conception is determined by the heavenly stem paired with the position opposite to that of the natal year. The same sequence of ten heavenly stems is used for this. For the months of Chen and Xu, use Wu; for the months of Chou and Wei, use Ji. To determine the hour of conception, count back three positions from the natal year to find the Officialdom position. If the wife's natal year is Wu, it indicates conception on the second day of the second lunar month at the hour of You. The rest follows the same pattern.
The song of "Observing the Monthly Cycle" says: From the heavenly stems and earthly branches of both husband and wife, calculate according to the旺 and 相 paths. The wife's birth stem is metal, and she is thirty-four years old; the husband's birth stem is water, and he is thirty-seven years old. For the wife's current year, look for her stem in the亥 position; for the husband's current year, push forward in the寅 position. Starting the divination at the seventh month and the hour of 未, the matter of pregnancy will not change. The Congkui (You) is located at 酉 and is in the亥 position, indicating the strength of the metal element is evident. This means the wife's birth stem is metal, and her current year is at亥, where 酉 is found, indicating the metal is strong; furthermore, the divination is started in the seventh month when the metal element is in command.
The song says: Shenhou (Zi) is on the寅 (Yin) position, and the husband's fortune can be known through the Five Phases. If the husband's birth stem belongs to water, and his age stem is on the寅 (Yin) with Zi (Zi) appearing, then water is strong. If both are strong, they should conceive. The divination pattern is in harmony, so there is a proper outcome. This means that when both husband and wife have strong positions in their age stems, they should conceive a child. The offspring born from the meeting of yin and yang is a son. The calculation of the fetal destiny is like this; other years are also calculated in the same way. The same method applies to other couples' age stems. This pattern of a prosperous conception continues. It does not involve the Three Transmissions, so few people know about this lesson. It is not part of the system of Four Lessons and Three Transmissions.
The song of the "Heart Mirror" says: the years of the husband and wife should fall on the prosperous and strong deities. When branches of the same category are grouped together despite different directions, they form a group. When divining in spring, where is the response of pregnancy? It is when the wife's year is in午 and the husband's year is in寅. This means that when divining in spring, wood is strong and fire is prosperous; the husband is thirty-seven years old with his year in寅, and the wife is twenty-seven years old with her year in午. Therefore, both the husband's and wife's years are on the prosperous and strong deities.寅 is in the east,午 is in the south, and寅 and午 both belong to the fire trinity harmony, so it is called triple harmony in different directions.
The song says: How to determine when autumn comes? When the wife's age is in the position of Zi and the husband's age is in the position of Shen, this refers to divination in autumn when metal is prosperous and water is strong, and Shen and Zi are also part of the triple harmony. All such cases are considered as harmonious types. To determine other years, simply follow this principle. The "Zeng Men" says: When the age position is in a prosperous and strong place, there will be signs of descendants. This means when the husband's and wife's age positions are in prosperous and strong places, they are separated by three or five positions, belonging to the same category but occupying different positions, and the season is also in the time of prosperity and strength, then during that year, conception and the birth of a noble son will certainly occur.
"The *Ding Zhang* says:所谓 'couple's years are of the same type but in different positions' refers to the four groups of triple harmony: Yin-Wu-Xu, Hai-Mao-Wei, Si-You-Chou, and Shen-Zi-Chen. For example, Yin, Wu, and Xu all belong to the fire element, but Yin is originally in the east, Wu in the south, and Xu in the west. Though they are of the same type, they are located in different directions, which is called 'different positions but same type'. The three earthly branches are separated by five positions, which is called 'three and five facing each other', meaning they are in harmony with each other."
For example, if one is divining in spring and the husband's age is on Wu while the wife's age is on Yin: in spring, wood is prosperous and fire is strong, which is exactly when both the husband's and wife's ages are in their prosperous and strong positions. Therefore, they will surely have a noble son during this year. If the wife's age is on Zi, then they should conceive on the eighth month on the day of Dingchou at the hour of Mao, which is very auspicious. If the wife's age is on Yin, then they should give birth on the fourth month on the day of Geng at the hour of Hai. The method of calculation is as follows: take the heavenly stem on the wife's age and count three positions forward to determine the month of conception, then continue counting three positions forward to determine the day and hour of conception. Take the heavenly stem on the wife's age and count three positions backward to determine the month of childbirth, then continue counting three positions backward to determine the day and hour of childbirth.
Prosperous Splendor Chart
Whenever the禄神, The Post-horse, and Nobleman are added upon the heavenly stem and earthly branch or the person's birth year, and they carry the气 of prosperous and strong, and are used in the transmission with auspicious generals, it is called the 荣华 lesson. For example, on a Bingyin day, the day stem has the 申 and the day branch has the 巳, which means both the stem and branch have the禄 and The Post-horse. The 申 is used as the first transmission, and the middle transmission is Nobleman, indicating that officials will get promotions and increased salary, ordinary people will gain wealth through their endeavors, and building houses will be favorable. Similarly, on a Renshen day, if the day stem has the 寅, it is the same situation. This is when 禄 and The Post-horse meet with Nobleman, indicating that the person will achieve honor and success, and further encounter brilliance, hence called 荣华. It corresponds to the body of the Shī hexagram from the Yi Jing, representing a lesson where a group of people follow closely.
The interpretation states: All heavenly stems and earthly branches are auspicious deities; moving into a house brings benefits in all affairs, business and trade will be prosperous, and both movement and stillness will be satisfactory. There will be the birth of a qilin child, and marriages will be harmonious. In military campaigns, territory can be expanded by thousands of miles. For example, on aGuichou day with巳 added to癸, the day's nobleman is also the wealth sign; on a丙寅 day with申 added to丙, the day's horse is also the wealth sign. Such cases are highly favorable for seeking wealth. Another example is on anJiashen day when丑 is on the day's stem, indicating the presence of both day and night noblemen, which suggests that affairs will be fully supported by two noblemen. On an乙酉 day with子 added to申, the day's nobleman is seated above the night's nobleman; on a丁卯 day with酉 added to亥, the night's nobleman follows the day's nobleman. In such cases, it is advisable to seek help from noblemen, and the affairs will certainly be completed through the hands of two noblemen.
But when seeking an audience, one might not be able to meet the nobleman, because the nobleman is out visiting another nobleman and is unlikely to be at home; if an official goes to visit another official, however, one might be able to meet. On the days of Jia, Wu, and Geng, when the day stem shows Chou, it indicates the nobleman is present, which is favorable for seeking the nobleman's help to accomplish matters. On the days of Yi and Xin, when the day stem shows the nobleman at Chen or Xu, it is not considered being in a prison-like situation, and it is also suitable to seek an audience. For other days, if the nobleman is at Chen or Xu, it is considered being in a prison-like situation, implying the possibility of accepting bribes; in such cases, one should pray secretly and make private vows. If the entire divination lacks a retrograde nobleman, then all matters of advancement, seeking help, and urging matters will proceed smoothly. If the nobleman is also the month general, it is even more favorable, corresponding to the auspicious sign in the I Ching's Army (Shi) hexagram's Nine in the Second line, 'Being in the army is auspicious, receiving the favor of Heaven.'
If there are no progressive noblemen in the entire calculation, or if the nobleman is in a prison position, then appeals to authority will not be granted, and it is advisable to retreat rather than advance; forcing forward will lead to trouble. On Jiazi day, the daytime nobleman Chou is seated on You, and the nighttime nobleman Wei is seated on Mao, indicating a nobleman's stumble, and appeals or matters will have many conflicting threads. On Dingyou day, the day stem is You and the day branch is Hai, with all four lessons containing both daytime and nighttime noblemen, resulting in noblemen everywhere. However, having too many noblemen makes them ineffective, and appeals will not succeed, with matters lacking support. Those in office will have complicated duties, or those entrusted with authority will lack exclusivity. This is especially dangerous for lawsuits. If a daytime divination uses the nighttime nobleman, it is like walking into darkness with open eyes; if a nighttime divination uses the daytime nobleman, it is like moving from darkness to light.
If the nobleman is before the day stem, one should not hurry matters, as forcing them may anger the nobleman. If the nobleman is after the day stem, one should hurry and not delay. In the case where on the third day and fourth day, the亥 is placed on the未 and the酉 is placed on the巳, both noblemen are seated in positions that are being overcome, which is called sharp pole with both ends loose, and one should not seek help from officials. Or if the white tiger is on the丑 and the white tiger is also on the丑, in a divination about litigation, the nobleman will also be angry. If the vermilion bird's god overcomes the nobleman, then when seeking documents, the nobleman will be hesitant. In this case, whether the nobleman appears in the three transmissions or in the heavenly stem and earthly branch, the same interpretation applies.
On a Dingchou day, when You is placed on Wei and Hai is placed on You, both noblemen fall into Kongwang. In such cases, matters that were initially agreed upon are preempted by others, or someone falsely reports good news, leading to complications. The matter can only be settled by changing to another ten-day period. In the case of six Ding days with Hai placed on Wei, the nobleman transforms into a day ghost, which is added to the day stem. This is favorable for official affairs but ominous for illness, indicating divine interference. If the ghost is placed on the day branch, it indicates illness caused by the household deity, and it is advisable to set up worship to appease the household deity. If it becomes a tomb ghost, the situation becomes even more dangerous. The nobleman also acts as the sixth harm, and in lawsuits, even if one is right, the judgment may be unjust. Major matters can only be handled on a small scale, and clever plans must be carried out in a clumsy manner. Only by recognizing the situation and making temporary concessions can things be avoided. All other situations are unfavorable, reflecting the ominous image of the sixth line of the Qian hexagram, "Disciple with corpse, firmness brings misfortune."
For example, on the day of Bingshen (丙申) at the hour of Mao (卯), using Zi (子) as the month general: the Zi on the heaven plate is added to the Mao on the earth plate, with the heaven plate retreating three positions from the earth plate. The lodging palace of Bingshen is in Si (巳), so Si gets Yin (寅), which is the first lesson; Yin gets Hai (亥), which is the second lesson; the day branch Shen (申) gets Si, which is the third lesson; and Si gets Yin again, which is the fourth lesson. The禄 (lu) of Bingshen is in Si, and theThe Post-horse (yimǎ) is in Yin, so the Yin on the day stem is exactly theThe Post-horse, and the Si on the day branch is exactly the禄. The third lesson, Si fire, conquers the Shen metal below it, so the initiating transmission is taken from Si, which is in command and thus the相气 (xiang qi). The middle transmission is Yin on Si, and the final transmission is Hai on Yin. Hai is the daytime nobleman for the day of Bingshen. The person's true birth sign is Yin, and Hai on Yin is also the nobleman. The year of the person's age is in Si, which is the禄, and Si also has Yin, theThe Post-horse. Thus, the禄, The Post-horse, and Nobleman (guiren) are all gathered, each riding a favorable general. Therefore, it is judged as a prosperous lesson. The initial transmission is Si with Tian Kong, the middle transmission is Yin with Liu He, and the final transmission is Hai with Guiren. The diagram marks out 「year」 and 「birth」, which are the positions of the year of the person's age and their true birth sign.
For example, on a Gengchen day with亥 placed on寅, if one is asking about their own birth sign which is寅, they are certain to pass the imperial examination. This is because, when divining during the day, the night noble is used, and when divining at night, the day noble is used as the 'curtain official', which refers to the examiner inside the curtain. The birth sign寅 has亥 on it, and亥 is the month general, indicating official status and prestige. The year pillar is on辰, which has丑, and丑 is the day noble of a Geng day, which is the curtain official. The brilliant star and the noble god are both present, the Vermilion Bird is flying high, and巳 fire is present on the self. Therefore, it is concluded that one will definitely succeed. In this divination, the lodgment palace is in申. With亥 placed on寅, the heaven plate advances nine positions compared to the earth plate: the first lesson is on申 with巳, the second lesson is on巳 with寅, the third lesson is on辰 with丑, and the fourth lesson is on丑 with戌. The fire巳 overcomes the metal申, so the initial transmission is巳, the middle transmission is寅, and the final transmission is亥. The initial transmission is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, the middle transmission by the Azure Dragon, and the final transmission by the Tai Chang.
Deqing Lesson
Any divination lesson where the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the day are accompanied by their respective Deity Spirits, as well as the Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue, and these appear in the person's birth year and are riding on auspicious generals, is called a De-Qing lesson. The term "De" refers to harmonious energy, which is a favorable deity that brings blessings and protection to the family and home. The method of determining the Deity Spirit of the day's Heavenly Stem: for Jia and Ji days, the Deity is at寅; for Yi and Geng days, it is at申; for Bing and Xin days, and for Wu and Gui days, the Deity is at巳; for Ding and Ren days, the Deity is at亥. When these positions are encountered, all things appear renewed. The method of determining the Deity Spirit of the day's Earthly Branch: starting from子, the Deity moves to巳, and proceeds in order through the twelve earthly branches.
The method of calculating Heavenly Virtue is: in the first month, it is at Ding; in the second month, at the Kun position; in the third month, at Ren; in the fourth month, at Xin; in the fifth month, at the Qian position; in the sixth month, at Jia; in the seventh month, at Gui; in the eighth month, at Gen; in the ninth month, at Bing; in the tenth month, at Yi; in the eleventh month, at Xun; in the twelfth month, at Geng. The method of calculating Monthly Virtue is: in the first, fifth, and ninth months, it is at Bing; in the second, sixth, and tenth months, it is at Jia; in the third, seventh, and eleventh months, it is at Ren; in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth months, it is at Geng. With these two deities supporting, manyInauspicious Spirit will dissipate. Virtue has no greater good than this, so having virtue brings celebration. Virtue can benefit things, remove evil, and accomplish good deeds, transforming misfortune into fortune, thus bringing joy. Therefore, it is called the De-Qing lesson. It is associated with the Need hexagram of the I Ching, and is the lesson for the gathering of the virtuous.
The interpretation states: The virtuous deity is in position, and all kinds of harmful influences are concealed; those who are imprisoned are released, and those in critical illness are not harmed; marriages result in harmonious partnerships, and pregnancies lead to the birth of virtuous sons; any plans or aspirations will be prosperous and auspicious. If the virtuous deity transforms into a ghostly trigram, it is favorable for official positions and not harmful for illness. If it is further accompanied by the Azure Dragon, it is especially auspicious. If the four harmful influences of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are all submerged in the four cardinal directions of Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun, then it is extremely auspicious, with no obstacles, and even if there are harmful generals, they will not cause disaster, corresponding to the image of the Need卦's ninth line five, "Zhen Ji" (upright auspiciousness). If the virtuous deity is accompanied by harmful influences and the White Tiger, or if the virtuous deity is in an empty position, or if the Heavenly General and the accompanying deity engage in external conflict and are subjected to punishment, it is inauspicious. For example, on a day of Zi, the巳 virtue is placed on Hai, accompanied by the Black Tortoise and subjected to a double conflict, this is called reduced virtue, and the matter is like the two stars Can and Shen, which cannot meet. Another example is on a day of Yi, the申 virtue is placed on You and initiates the transmission, where You metal returns to attack Yi wood, and申 transforms into a ghost, indicating a gentleman being controlled by a petty person, with the four harmful influences not submerged, corresponding to the ominous image of the Need卦's ninth line three, "Zhi Kou Zhi" (inviting bandits).
For example, on a Wuzi day at the hour of Xu (the original text writes 'Wu hour', but since there is no Wu hour in the twelve hours, it should be a mistake for Xu hour), using Mao as the month general: the Heaven Plate's Mao is added to the Earth Plate's Xu. The Heaven Plate advances five positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The lodgment palace of Wu is in Si, so Si receives Xu, which is the first lesson; Xu receives Mao, which is the second lesson; the day branch Zi receives Si, which is the third lesson; and Si receives Xu, which is the fourth lesson. The third lesson Si is added to Zi, and the water below Zi overcomes the fire above Si, so the lower overcomes the upper, and Si is the initial transmission. The middle transmission is the Xu on Si, and the final transmission is the Mao on Xu. The virtuous god of Wu day is in Si, and the virtuous god is added to Zi to initiate the transmission, so it is called the Deqing lesson. The initial transmission is Si with Tai Yin, the middle transmission is Xu with Liu He, and the final transmission is Mao with Tai Chang. The book "Ding'e" states this in the same way.
Harmonious Divination Session
Whenever the day branch in the divination lesson coincides with a heavenly stem that is harmonious, or when the earthly branches form a triple harmony, aLiu He, or initiate a transmission, and the person's birth year also aligns with a favorable general, it is called a Harmonious Lesson. The harmonious combinations of heavenly stems are five types: Jia and Ji form a just and upright harmony, Yi and Geng form a benevolent and righteous harmony, Bing and Xin form a commanding and authoritative harmony, Ding and Ren form a licentious and misleading harmony, and Wu and Gui form an emotionless harmony. TheLiu He of earthly branches each have their own meanings: Zi harmonizes with Chou as reality, Chou harmonizes with Zi as emptiness; Hai harmonizes with Yin as approaching, Yin harmonizes with Hai as breaking; Xu harmonizes with Mao as old, Mao harmonizes with Xu as new; Chen harmonizes with You as union, You harmonizes with Chen as separation; Si harmonizes with Shen as following, Shen harmonizes with Si as opposing; Wei harmonizes with Wu as obscured, Wu harmonizes with Wei as empty.
Triple Harmony each has its own nature and characteristics: the Wood Triple Harmony of Hai-Mao-Wei signifies a situation of multiplicity and disorder; the Metal Triple Harmony of Si-You-Chou indicates correction and change, as well as separation and discord; the Fire Triple Harmony of Yin-Wu-Xu suggests forming groups but not necessarily being upright; the Water Triple Harmony of Shen-Zi-Chen implies fluidity without clarity and stagnation without dryness, making it suitable for movement rather than stillness. Whenever the Day Branch combines with the year or the destiny, it indicates harmony. A single combination brings a new atmosphere, leading to harmonious human relations and successful affairs, hence it is called the Harmonious Lesson. It corresponds to the structure of the Well hexagram from the Book of Changes, and is a lesson associated with marital union.
The interpretation states: Heaven and Earth are in harmony, odd and even numbers intermingle; predicting pregnancy and childbirth will be delayed, people going out will return with good fortune; in terms of fame and wealth, moving to a higher place is favorable, and wealth and joy will be as desired; marriage is a heaven-sent match, and all matters will bring good fortune. Triple Harmony indicates that matters involve many people, and the fulfillment will be after more than a month. Liu He signifies yin and yang in harmony, indicating harmony between husband and wife. If the day stem, day branch, hidden god, manifest god, and year destiny are in these six places, and the three transmissions meet auspicious generals, and the four killing positions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are involved, then the more harmonies, the more auspiciousness, and all matters will be smoothly accomplished, with no misfortune. Even if following evil killing positions, it will still bring harmony amidst misfortune; or if harmony includes punishment and harm, but the virtue god is in the final transmission and has strength, then entering misfortune will meet auspiciousness, and there can be some flexibility. If two hidden gods are in harmony, then proposing marriage is extremely auspicious, corresponding to the image of the sixth line of the Well hexagram in the I Ching: "The well is filled, do not cover it, with sincerity, the beginning is most auspicious."
If the divination concerns an ominous matter, the existing situation should be maintained, and the problem becomes more difficult to resolve. When seeking documents or handling affairs, if there is an aspect of harmony but it lacks strength, the outcome will be obstructed, appearing as indecision, and it is better not to have such harmony. If illness is divined and an ominous general is involved, the condition becomes particularly severe, and if the three transmissions reinforce this, the illness will be hard to recover from. If the divination concerns loss or escape, the item will be hidden and difficult to find. If harmony is accompanied by punishments, conflicts, destruction, or harm, it indicates hidden dangers within the apparent good, leading to actual misfortune. If harmony falls into emptiness, the matter will require great effort and fail to succeed; if the three transmissions retreat, it is like uprooting grass from the ground. If harmony also involves hidden ghosts that harm the day stem, and if this is combined with the Teng Snake, White Tiger, or Vermilion Bird, there will be calamity. One should not entertain unrealistic hopes or entrust others to handle affairs. This corresponds to the ominous image of the well in the second line of the Well hexagram, "Shooting Frogs in the Well."
For example, when divining at the Zi hour on a Wu-Shen day, use Shen as the month general. The Heaven Plate's Shen is placed on the Earth Plate's Zi, with the Heaven Plate advancing eight positions ahead of the Earth Plate. Wu's lodging palace is in Si, so Si receives Chou, forming the first lesson; Chou receives You, forming the second lesson; the day branch Shen receives Chen, forming the third lesson; and Chen receives Zi, forming the fourth lesson. Zi and the day stem's Chou form aLiu He (Liu He). Zi is placed on Chen, and Chen earth controls Zi water, resulting in an upper control of the lower, so Zi initiates the transmission. The middle transmission is Shen on Zi, and the final transmission is Chen on Shen. The three transmissions, Shen, Zi, and Chen, form a water triad and achieve the triple harmony. According to the five rats' hidden method, at the Chou hour, the癸 (Gui) Chou is derived, and Gui Chou is paired with Wu. The day branch Shen also forms a triple harmony with the three transmissions. The person's true birth sign is Hai, and Hai receives Wei, which is the night honor of Wu day. The year of the person is Chen, and Chen receives Zi, which is occupied by the Azure Dragon. The day stem, day branch, and both yin and yang spirits form the triple harmony. The four killing stars, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, are hidden in the four directions. All the heavenly generals are favorable, so it is a harmonious joy lesson. The initial transmission is Zi with the Azure Dragon, the middle transmission is Shen with the Teng Snake, and the final transmission is Chen with the Black Tortoise.
The "Disputes" says: When this divination is obtained, the master is happy, and both sides help each other to accomplish things. It is suitable to seek fame and fortune, to petition noblemen, and trade and marriage are especially auspicious. However, pregnancy is delayed and illness takes longer to recover. In conflicts and lawsuits, reconciliation is best. Triple Harmony indicates that the matter involves many people, and the time should be over a month. Liu He indicates harmony between husband and wife, and it is especially effective for marriage. If the heavenly stems and earthly branches, yin and yang, and the year, month, and day of birth all meet auspicious generals, and the four evils are hidden, then the more combinations there are, the more auspicious outcomes there will be, and all matters can be accomplished. Even if encounteringInauspicious Sha (evil killing), it still indicates that the evil is accompanied by harmony. If the combination includes punishment and harm, and the virtue god is in the final transmission with vitality, it is entering a凶 (evil) situation but encountering auspiciousness, and some flexibility can be allowed. If two yin gods combine, it is only beneficial for marriage proposals.
On a Bingshen day, the reverse chant is formed when the day stem and day branch combine with the yin and yang spirits, creating triple harmony and Liu He. On a Xinmao day, the Mao is placed on top of Xin; on a RENYIN day, the Hai is placed on top of Yin, both forming Liu He through the combination of the stem and branch. On a Jiashen day, the亥 (Hai) combines with Jiā (Jia) on the day stem, and the巳 (Si) combines with Shen on the day branch. On a Dingchou day and Jichou day, the Wu (Wu) is placed on the day stem, forming Liu He between the stem and branch. On a Wuchen day, the Chou (Chou) is placed on the day stem and the Zi (Zi) is on the day branch, also forming this type. On a Xinyou day, the Wu (Wu) is placed on the day stem, and the stem and branch are interwoven to form both triple harmony and Liu He.
For example, on an Yiyou day, if the three transmissions are Shen, Zi, and Chen forming a water trinity that supports the day stem, and the day branch You forms a Liu He (六合) and also participates in a Triple Harmony (三合), it is a complete good omen. Furthermore, if the heavenly generals are all of earth type and function as the day stem's wealth element, it is especially favorable for seeking wealth. On Bingshen, Bingchen, and Bingzi days, if the three transmissions meet a water trinity that harms the day stem, but the earth element You on the day stem can block the water, it is not considered bad. If the upper and lower elements are interlocked and form a harmonious relationship, it is very beneficial for trade and seeking wealth. If they mutually generate, it is suitable for partnership in one's own business. If there are two or three layers of mutual connection, it indicates dealing with two or three matters. If the three transmissions meet a Triple Harmony but all lose their strength, it is originally unfavorable, but if they generate the wealth element on the day stem or the wealth element on the day branch, it indicates recovering old debts, which is actually favorable for obtaining wealth.
This lesson is generally auspicious, but if it is used for predicting illness or lawsuits, there will be lingering worries and doubts that are hard to dispel. If it is about losing something or someone escaping, it will be difficult to recover what was lost or to find the person. If it is about documents or matters requiring careful planning, then the affairs will certainly be completed. However, if the combination includes刑 (imprisonment), 冲 (conflict), 破 (ruin), or 害 (harm), it is like sweet honey containing arsenic; although it seems good, there is hidden danger. If the combination falls empty, the matter will ultimately fail. If the combination includes 暗鬼 (hidden ghost) that harms the day stem, and if it is accompanied by Teng Snake, White Tiger, or Vermilion Bird, there will be misfortune. One should not have unrealistic expectations, nor should one entrust others to handle one's affairs.
He Mei Ke
Whenever the heavenly stem and earthly branch in the divination chart meet the Triple Harmony or Liu He, and they mutually harmonize with each other, it is considered a harmonious chart. For example, if the three transmissions form a Triple Harmony, and the heavenly stem and earthly branch also form Liu He, or if the day's heavenly stem transforms into a wealth element, and the Triple Harmony and Liu He correspond with each other, then any plan can be carried out smoothly without obstacles. There will also be someone helping from the side to facilitate matters. Even those who are away will return happily. Even if there are malevolent elements or凶杀, the matter will still succeed without hindrance. For instance, in cases of伏吟 on Yiyou day or Bingshen day, the hidden spirits of the day's heavenly stem and earthly branch both form Liu He.
It is also like the case of Xinmao day, where the Mao is added to Xin, or Renyin day, where the Hai is added to Yin, which are instances of the heavenly stem and earthly branch combining to form the Six Harmonies. Similarly, on Jiashen day, the Heavenly Stem receives Hai and the Earthly Branch receives Si; on Dingchou day and Jichou day, the Heavenly Stem receives Wu; these also form harmonies. On Wuchen day, the Heavenly Stem receives Chou and the Earthly Branch receives Zi; on Xinyou day, the Heavenly Stem receives Wei and the Earthly Branch receives Wu, which are instances of the heavenly and earthly branches combining to form the Six Harmonies. On Yichou day, the Heavenly Stem receives Zi; on Bingyin day, the Heavenly Stem receives Hai, which are instances of the heavenly and earthly branches forming both the Triple Harmony and the Six Harmonies. All these situations represent harmonious and pleasant human relationships, truly complete and beautiful, hence called "He Mei Ke" (Harmonious Beauty). When used for divination, they indicate that host and guest are harmonious and things are smoothly accomplished. This type of divination belongs to the structure of the "Feng" hexagram from the "Yijing" (Book of Changes), representing a lesson where both the spiritual and the Dao are harmonized.
The interpretation states: Triple Harmony andLiu He are both complete, resulting in a harmonious situation above and below; trade is very smooth, and wealth flows continuously; marriages are auspicious and matters are successfully completed, but those who are seriously ill find themselves in a difficult situation; seeking help from noblemen is appropriate, and in matters of enemy relations, reconciliation is the outcome. The more combinations there are, the more auspicious outcomes there will be, and even if matters come quickly they can be accomplished; the fewer combinations there are, the fewer auspicious outcomes there will be, and matters will take some time to be completed. On the Yiyou day, the three transmissions of Shen, Zi, and Chen form a water trinity that supports the day stem, and the day branch Chou forms aLiu He, along with Triple Harmony, making it a completely auspicious situation. Furthermore, the heavenly generals are all of earth type and act as the wealth trigram for the day stem, which is favorable for seeking wealth, but not favorable for respecting elders and managing livelihoods—because the earth generals overcome the life qi.
On the days of Bing Shen, Bing Zi, and Bing Chen, the three transmissions meet the water element and injure the day stem. However, the earthy branch Chou (ox) on the day stem can resist the influence of the triple harmony and liu he. Therefore, scolding and cursing cannot ignite fire. Nearby plans can succeed, but over time there is fear of being interfered with by others. If the upper and lower elements interconnect and harmonize, trade and seeking wealth will be very beneficial. If they mutually generate, it is suitable for joint business in one's own profession. If there are two or three layers of connection, it indicates dealing with two or three matters. If the three transmissions meet the triple harmony and all lose their strength, it is originally unfavorable, but if they generate the wealth god on the day stem, it indicates collecting old debts; if they generate the wealth god on the day branch, it indicates recovering old debts. Both are favorable for gaining wealth, especially gaining wealth at home and giving it to others. These situations correspond to the image of the sixth line of the Fēng hexagram in the Yijing, which says, "Coming with a chapter, there is celebration and praise, auspicious."
If using Triple Harmony and Liu He to interpret matters of worry, doubt, or illness, which are generally ominous, and if there is aInauspicious General on top, then the evil influence is hard to dissipate and can only be resolved by encountering a冲. Alternatively, if the harmony is also considered as six harms or falls into Kongwang, this indicates good with a dullness, suggesting that plans involving collaboration may change midway. If the three transmissions meet the fire trinity of Yin-Wu-Xu, and the heavenly stem and earthly branch show Wu (午) as self-punishment, Chou (丑) as six harms, and Zi (子) as a direct conflict, this is called Triple Harmony committing a killing, which is like sweet honey containing arsenic. It signifies that although there is kindness, there is also resentment, and although the matter is completed, there will be obstacles.
Or when the meeting occurs in an empty position, the initial union is harmonious and pleasant, but later becomes an illusion. When both sides steal each other's vital energy, they both secretly intend to withdraw. When there is mutual harm, the host and guest each harbor jealousy. When there is mutual punishment, they come together but then quarrel. When there is mutual conflict, they first unite but then face difficulties. When there is mutual overcoming, they unite but eventually end up in legal disputes, with hidden hostility. For example, on a Renshen day, if the day stem has寅 and the day branch has亥, the heavenly stem and earthly branch form a六合, but the earth stem壬 and earth branch申 on the earth plate are in a harmful relationship. This is called an outwardly pleasing but inwardly sharp situation, indicating a superficial harmony with hidden slander. It corresponds to the ominous image of the sixth line of the Feng hexagram, "His house is adorned, but for three years he does not see his face."
For example, on the day of Renwu with the time of Si, using Chou as the month general: the Chou on the heaven plate is placed on the Si on the earth plate, with the heaven plate lagging four positions behind the earth plate. The Ren day stem lodges in Hai, so Hai gets Wei, which is the first lesson; Wei gets Mao, which is the second lesson; the day branch Wu gets Yin, which is the third lesson; Yin gets Xu, which is the fourth lesson. The fourth lesson Xu is placed on Yin, with the lower Yin wood overcoming the upper Xu earth, so Xu initiates the transmission; the middle transmission is the Wu on Xu, and the final transmission is the Yin on Wu. The three transmissions form the fire triple harmony. The day stem's Wei also forms a六合 with the middle transmission's Wu, and the day stem and day branch also form a triple harmony, with the day branch being in its旺 position. Fire is the wealth element for the Ren water day stem, and wealth is initiated and meets harmony, so it is judged as a harmonious lesson. The first transmission is Xu with the White Tiger, the middle transmission is Wu with the Heavenly Empress, and the final transmission is Yin with theLiu He.
Cutting the Gate Divination
Whenever the魁 or 羁 is placed on the day stem or day branch and initiates the transmission, it is called a斩关 lesson. Chen is theTiangang (Chen) and Xu is the天魁; the day branch represents a person, while the魁 and 羿 represent the heavenly gate. When the魁 and 羿 are placed on the day branch, it is as if a person meets aInauspicious Spirit, with heavy earth energy blocking the path ahead, like the heavenly gate being difficult to pass. To open the path, one must cut through the gate, hence the name 斩关. Yin is the天梁 and Mao is the天关; wood overcomes earth, and when three heavenly deities are activated together, it is favorable for fleeing or traveling.
The hexagram 未 represents the Jade Maiden, capable of protecting; the hexagram 子 represents Huagai, capable of concealing form; 「Tai Yin」 (the Heavenly General governing darkness and protection) is the gate of the earth, governing concealment; 「Liu He」 (the Heavenly General governing marriage and secrecy) is the private door, governing hidden concealment; Tianyi possesses divine light, capable of protection; the Azure Dragon is like a thousand-mile fine horse, suitable for long journeys. When these divine generals appear in the Three Transmissions, the diviner is favorable for private matters, concealed movements, and evasion, never encountering obstacles. This lesson belongs to the DUN hexagram of the I Ching, classified as the lesson of the leopard hiding in the southern mountains.
The interpretation states: crossing barriers and bridges is possible, and it is most favorable for fleeing; capturing thieves is difficult, but traveling is vigorous and self-renewing; divination regarding illness and lawsuits indicates misfortune, but performing rituals, prayers, and offerings brings good fortune and thoroughness; drawing talismans and preparing medicine are the most effective methods at this time. If the official ghost serves as the direct symbol, the Tiangang (Chen) blocks the ghost's entrance (Yin), the Tiankui (Xu) passes through the heavenly gate (Hai), and it coincides with aInauspicious General (malevolent general), then it forms a network of魁罡 (Tiankui and Tiangang). If this is further combined with the four central directions (子, 午, 卯, 酉), it indicates a separation between heaven and earth, leading to blocked roads and barriers, which is unfavorable for concealment, illness, lawsuits, and travel.
The hour of Zi is the heavenly gate, and the hour of Mao is the heavenly grid; matters are obstructed by heavenly timing. The hour of Wu is the earthly gate, and the hour of You is the earthly grid; matters are obstructed by geographical factors. One must also consider the five phases in detail. The three transmissions conflict with each other, and internal and external aspects do not meet, resulting in obstruction. The middle transmission conflicts with both the first and the final transmissions, leading to a lack of coordination at the beginning and end, thus causing obstruction. On a yang day, if the昴 star lesson is obtained, it indicates obstruction from roadblocks. On a yin day, if the昴 star lesson or the hidden chant lesson is obtained, it indicates obstruction from hidden and unwilling encounters. The reverse chant lesson indicates obstruction due to lack of mutual correspondence. In addition, the lessons of three intersections, net, and transformation all indicate obstruction, corresponding to the ominous sign of the retreat hexagram "not advantageous to go anywhere" (the original text under "six" may be missing a yao position).
If the three transmissions meet the branches of寅, 卯, 未, or 子, and are accompanied by auspicious generals such as 天乙, Azure Dragon, Tai Yin, or Liu He, and on days of 甲, 戊, or 庚, the hour animal 丑 is elevated to the heavenly gate, while the 辰罡 blocks the ghost gate, the six spirits are hidden, and the four evils are submerged, then these are the four auspicious times. The term "six spirits hidden" refers to Teng Snake being below 子, which is called falling into water; Vermilion Bird being below 癸 water, which is called drowning in the river; Gou Chen being below 卯, which is called imprisonment; Tian Kong being below 巽, which is called initial decay; White Tiger being below 午, which is called burning the body; and Black Tortoise being below 坤, which is called breaking the foot. The term "four evils submerged" refers to the four墓 branches of 辰, 戌, 丑, and 未 being located at 乾, 坤, 艮, and 巽, and sinking into the four cardinal directions. At this time, it is favorable for traveling, escaping, avoiding punishment, and hiding; activities such as preparing medicine, drawing talismans, and making prayers are also auspicious, corresponding to the image of the Duan hexagram's ninth line, "excellent retreat, firm and auspicious."
For example, on the day of Jiayin (甲寅) at the hour of Hai (亥), using Wei (未) as the month general: the Heaven Plate's Wei is added to the Earth Plate's Hai, with the Heaven Plate lagging four positions behind the Earth Plate. The lodgment palace of Ji (甲) is in Yin (寅), so Yin gets Xu (戌), which is the first lesson; Xu gets Wu (午), which is the second lesson; the day branch Yin also gets Xu, which is the third lesson; and Xu gets Wu again, which is the fourth lesson. The third lesson Xu is added to Yin, with the wood below Yin overcoming the earth above Xu, resulting in the lower overcoming the upper, so Xu initiates the transmission. The middle transmission is Wu on Xu, and the final transmission is Yin on Wu. The Heaven魁 (Tian Gui) Xu is the Heaven Gate (天关), added to Yin, which is also the Heaven Beam (天梁). Wood overcomes earth, cutting through the gate, so it is favorable for travel. Additionally, the night noble (夜贵) Wei is properly ascending the Heaven Gate Hai, with Teng Snake, Vermilion Bird, Gou Chen, Tian Kong, Bai Hu, and Yuan Wu six spirits each hidden. The four killing stars (辰戌丑未) are also hidden in the four directions, making it one of the four great auspicious times, with everything going smoothly. The initial transmission is Xu with Liu He, the middle transmission is Wu with Tian Hou, and the final transmission is Yin with Bai Hu.
The "订讹" says: When this divination is obtained, it is favorable for travel and escape, and thieves are difficult to catch. It is unfavorable for illness and lawsuits. Drawing symbols, preparing medicine, and performing rituals for appeasement are most appropriate. If the three transmissions meet the hours of寅, 卯, 未, or 子 and are accompanied by Tianyi, Qinglong, Taiyin, or Liuhex, it is called "Heaven and Earth are in perfect communication." There is also a saying about the hour's heavenly and earthly coverings: 寅 is Tianliang, 卯 is Tianmen, and together with Kuigang, they are all considered Tiankuan, with wood overcoming earth, and the three heavenly deities working together. 未 is Yünu, and six Ding are also called Yünu, both capable of protecting. 子 is Huagai, which can conceal the form. Tianyi has divine light, which can provide protection. Qinglong is like a thousand-mile fine horse, capable of long-distance travel. Taiyin is the earthly gate, governing concealment. Liuhex is the private door, governing concealment. When the three transmissions meet these deities, escape and travel are as if aided by deities.
If on the days of Jia, Wu, or Geng, the noble official of Chou rises to the heavenly gate, and the fierce star of Chen blocks the ghost's entrance, with the six spirits hidden and the four evils concealed, it becomes even more auspicious. Furthermore, if the three transmissions contain Shen and You accompanied by the White Tiger and Tai Yin, this is called cutting off the passage, and a person who has fled will never be recovered. If further accompanied by blood branches, blood taboo, Yangren, and other great evils, it indicates that someone has been injured and then fled. Generally, this lesson is most suitable for reforming old things and starting new ones; when going out, it is favorable to see the spirit of Ding and the post-horse. However, if one remains in the old situation at home, it indicates obstruction and the occurrence of obscure and unclear events.
This lesson is suitable for going out, but if the Qiu Gang transforms into the official ghost and serves as the direct symbol, or if it forms a net with the surrounding forces and is accompanied by aInauspicious General, or if the Tiangang blocks the ghost gate and the Tiankui passes through the heavenly gate, these are all called cutting the gate and encountering the official. If it is added to the four central directions of Zi, Wei, Mao, and You, it indicates a separation between heaven and earth. If it is added to Zi (heaven gate) and Mao (heaven grid), the matter is obstructed by heavenly conditions; if it is added to Wu (earth gate) and You (earth grid), the matter is obstructed by earthly conditions. When the heavenly general conflicts with the god it is riding on, the internal and external forces do not meet, causing obstruction; when the middle transmission conflicts with the first and last transmissions, the beginning and end do not connect, causing obstruction; on a yang day with the昴 star lesson, there is obstruction from roadblocks; on a yin day with the昴 star lesson or hidden chanting, there is obstruction from unwillingness to meet people; and with reverse chanting, there is obstruction from lack of mutual understanding among people. In addition, lessons such as Sanjiao, Luwang, and Congge, as well as those where the three transmissions do not include Shen, You, or Baihu and Taiyin, are all called cutting the gate without connection, leading to obstruction and difficulty in proceeding, making it easy for someone who has run away to be captured.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" refers to this pattern as "Fish Losing Its Water." The mnemonic says: When the Qiu Gang falls on the day branch, the initiating transmission will stir up a cutting-off wind. Whenever the day stem and day branch are overlaid by Chen or Xu and the initiating transmission occurs, it is called a cutting-off hexagram, and it certainly indicates someone will flee. It also says: Traveling should be auspicious, but staying home implies secret communication. If the three transmissions form a hexagram of Liu He, then the Tai Yin gate is within it. The Liu He in the three transmissions is the private gate of heaven, while Tai Yin is the gate of earth.
The song says: Gongcao and Xiaoji correspond to Tianliang and Yünu. In the Three Transmissions, if Gongcao is in Yin, it is Tianliang; if Xiaoji is in Wei, it is Yünu. Both protect and assist in escaping. It also says: Qinglong represents a vast wing, Huagai belongs to the Purple Micro Palace. When avoiding blame and fleeing, one should go out and return safely. On the Wushen day in the first lunar month, at the You hour, this hexagram is perfectly matched. A person fleeing hides under Huagai, which is the path of heaven's blessing. This means it is heaven's will, the future is smooth, the person fleeing can go far away, and there are no obstacles on the way.
The song says: "At the end, it returns to Liu He, both gates open and communication reaches ten thousand miles" — this means that the Final Transmission combined with Tiangang at Chen leads to both gates being open, allowing passage for ten thousand miles. It also says: "If one does not flee, confusion and chaos will occur at home" — meaning that if one does not escape, the household will suffer decline, and there may be incidents such as theft and disorder.
The Xiu Zhong Jin says: If the Qiu Gang is present on the day stem and day branch, and the three transmissions also contain the White Tiger, Tai Yin, and the years of Shen and You, it is called cutting the gate and breaking the barrier, and the person who has run away will never be captured again; if it also includes the Blood Branch, Blood Taboo, Yang Ren, and Shenyin, these threeInauspicious Sha, it must be that the person injured himself in order to escape. The Tong Shen Ji says: The divine light of Tian Yi is leading the way in front, the Liudin Yu Nu comes to assist, the Azure Dragon soars for thousands of miles, and the heavenly gate and earthly gate are both in place; if this is the result of a divination concerning a missing person, it is indeed a blessing for the person who has run away.
The song of the "Heart Mirror" says: When the day branch shows the Qiu Gang (魁罡) standing upright, this hexagram is called cutting the gate. The previous one has the Tian Yi (天乙) with divine light and Yu Nu (玉女) accompanying it, with Tian Liang (天梁) and Di Hu (地户) Tai Yin (太阴) between them; also, Qing Long (青龙) acts as a thousand-mile wing, and Zi Wei Tian Ren (紫微天人) serves as a barrier. Those who flee are difficult to capture, they vanish and disappear, never to return, with no news at all. The "Zeng Men" says: When the day branch passes over Qiu Gang, it is called cutting the gate. Or, if in the initiating transmission and the three transmissions, Gong Cao (功曹) Yin is with Tian Liang, Qing Long is the thousand-mile wing, Xiao Ji (小吉) Wei is Yu Nu, Shen Hou (神后) Zi is Huagai (华盖), Qiu Gang is Tian Guan (天关), Tai Yin is Di Hu (地户), and Liu He (六合) can conceal; encountering these deities is favorable for fleeing.
The "Ding Zhang" says: If one wishes to hide, one must walk the correct path both day and night. One should head towards the third position ahead, which is Liu He, and the second position behind, which is Tai Yin. These two places are the Heaven Gate and Earth Gate. The person fleeing should depart when Liu He is over the Day Stem and Tai Yin is over the Day Branch, thus traveling through the Heaven Gate and Earth Gate. One must not be harmed by the spirits of the person's age. When examining, one should focus on the fourth and fifth positions, specifically Tai Chang, Qing Long, Liu He, and Tai Yin. Qing Long over the Day Stem is good, as is Tai Chang over the Day Stem. Liu He and Tai Yin belong to the heavenly path; by riding upon them, the person fleeing will be safe. If further combined with Jiutan and Jiudi, one can travel thousands of miles safely, each having upper and lower positions.
The method of determining the Nine Heavens and Nine Earths: in spring, take the寅 (Yin) as the Nine Heavens and the Shengguang (Wu) at the午 (Wu) as the Nine Earths; in summer, take the Shengguang (Wu) at the午 (Wu) as the Nine Heavens and the子 (Zi) as the Nine Earths; in autumn, take the申 (Shen) as the Nine Heavens and the Shengguang (Wu) at the午 (Wu) as the Nine Earths; in winter, take the Shenhou (Zi) at the子 (Zi) as the Nine Heavens and the午 (Wu) as the Nine Earths. Always ensure that the Liu He and Tai Yin are in charge of the upper and lower positions respectively, over the地户 (earth gate). The earth gate refers to the除 (Chu), 定 (Ding), 开 (Kai), and 危 (Wei) days among the twelve construction gods. For example, in the second month, 辰 (Chen) is 除 (Chu), 未 (Wei) is 定 (Ding), 戌 (Xu) is 危 (Wei), and 丑 (Chou) is 开 (Kai).
It is also said that on the days of Wu and Ji, the position of Chen can be used for escape, and if it is combined with the four heavenly stems, it is even better. If further the Three Marvels Yi, Bing, and Ding are present in the sky, then the pursuer cannot catch up and the observer cannot see clearly. The method of determining isolation and vacancy, for example, in the first ten days of Jiazi, isolation falls on Xu and Hai, while vacancy falls on Chen and Si.
It is also said that the earthly branches corresponding to Wu and Ji should not be able to harm the heavenly stem of today. For example, if the earthly branch of Wu or Ji falls on Si or Wu, and today's heavenly stem is Geng or Xin, then the earthly branch of Wu or Ji would harm today's heavenly stem. The four heavenly stems should also not harm today's earthly branch; those who insist on leaving despite this will surely suffer misfortune. The heavenly gate should not harm the spirit associated with the year of the person who has fled. The isolated and empty spirit should not harm the day when the person first started to flee. The term "exiting the heavenly gate" refers to Liu He. When departing, one must also follow the steps of Yu, which involves first stepping with the left foot.
The "Zhaodan" text says: On the days of Chú, Dìng, Kāi, and Wēi, if the directions of Mǎo and Wèi are combined, and if the auspicious generals Qinglong, Tai Chang, Tai Yin, and Liu He are present, one may escape and hide.
