A return echo divination lesson.
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
Whenever the twelve heavenly spirits fall in positions opposite to their respective mansions during the casting of a divination, the first transmission is chosen as the one that is mutually controlling with the other. This is called "returning echo lesson." Its cause is that the month general and the time of divination are in opposition six positions, causing all spirits to flip to the opposite side: the northern Kan position exchanges with the southern Li position, the eastern Zhen position exchanges with the western Dui position, and the yin and yang of the day stem and day branch mutually control each other, repeatedly echoing and sighing. Therefore, it is called "returning echo." When this lesson is obtained, those who want to leave are reluctant to go, and those who want to leave are eager to return, and neither gain nor loss is determined. Only returning to old matters and resuming old occupations is beneficial. It corresponds to the Zhen hexagram of the Zhou Changes, representing a lesson pattern of being startled repeatedly one after another.
The imagery and words from the "Book of Poetry" are used in the interpretation: a high embankment becomes a deep valley, and the deep valley becomes a mountain range; something you have in hand is lost, and something you thought would fail turns out to succeed; the camp that is set up will scatter, and the army that is arrayed will face a false alarm; vitality comes from outside, but calamity must be borne oneself. Specifically, the three transmittances (三传) of巳,亥, and巳 are repeated in a returning manner, often indicating matters of change, demands, and documents related to property; the three transmittances of卯,酉, and卯 relate to matters concerning the family residence, doors, and roads; the three transmittances of寅,申, and寅 relate to matters of long journeys, relocation, and disputes. If aInauspicious Spirit (malevolent deity) andInauspicious General (malevolent general) are encountered, there will be losses, and although action is taken, it will bring no benefit, and there will be continuous disturbances and troubles, corresponding to the ominous image of the sixth line of the Zhen hexagram, "Zhen comes and goes with danger." If a吉神 (benevolent deity) and吉将 (benevolent general) are encountered, it indicates a favorable situation, such as seeking favor in the capital, or a promotion in official position, corresponding to the auspicious image of the first line of the Zhen hexagram, "The ruler laughs joyfully."
On Gengxu day, at the hour of Yin, the month general is Shen. Shen and Yin are directly opposing each other. Furthermore, after placing the heavenly plate, each god is positioned in the palace that is opposite to its own. This forms the pattern of reverse repetition. Geng is lodged in Shen, and Shen has Yin on top, so the first transmission is Yin with Geng on top. Yin has Shen on top, so the second transmission is Shen with Yin on top. The day branch is Xu, and Xu has Chen on top, so the third transmission is Chen with Xu on top. Chen has Xu on top, so the fourth transmission is Xu with Chen on top. Among the four lessons, the first lesson has Yin wood on top and Geng metal below, with the lower element overcoming the upper one, which is called 'thief'. This is taken as the first transmission, so the first transmission is Yin. Yin has Shen on top, which is the second transmission. Shen has Yin on top, which is the third transmission. The three transmissions are Yin, Shen, and Yin, repeating back and forth, clearly showing the pattern of reverse repetition. The first and third transmissions, Yin, both ride on 'White Tiger', the second transmission, Shen, rides on 'Teng Snake'. The four lessons also contain 'Liu He' and 'Black Tortoise'.
Well rim shooting pattern
In a reverse echo chart, if none of the four lessons are mutually controlling, the first transmission is determined by the day branch's opposite god, using the upper god of that opposite position. This is called "Well Frame Pattern." Reverse echo charts usually involve mutual control, but when there is no mutual control, it only occurs on the days of Jichou, Dingchou, Xinwei, and Xinchou. On days with Chou, since there is no mutual control, the癸water hidden in the Chou palace is used to remotely shoot at the丙fire in the Si palace; on days with Wei, since there is no mutual control, the己earth hidden in the Wei palace is used to remotely shoot at the壬water in the Hai palace. Therefore, on Chou days, the initial transmission is taken from the亥god at the Si position on the earth plate, and on Wei days, the initial transmission is taken from the巳god at the Hai position on the earth plate. This situation is like a person leaning against the well frame, shooting at the well from the side, but the arrow cannot exit the well mouth, hence it is called "Well Frame Shooting." Since the well frame has no incoming or outgoing, the middle transmission must fall on the upper god of the day branch, and the final transmission must fall on the upper god of the day stem. This is the fixed method for determining the transmissions. When this chart is drawn, it is like having no support, and one body has to serve two purposes.
The image text says: The person going out meets obstacles and cannot proceed; thieves come to attack each other; strange events occur both inside and outside the home, and there is no harmony between superiors and inferiors; one can still accomplish things by taking a roundabout approach, but going straight ahead leads to no way out; among the three transmissions, if there is a deity of protection, it is most pleasing to see the Azure Dragon. In summary, if the divine general is auspicious, auspicious signs appear; if it is inauspicious, inauspicious signs appear.
For example, on the day of Xinchou in the first lunar month, starting a divination at the hour of Si, the month general is Hai. Hai and Si are in opposition, so all the heavenly palace deities are reversed to their opposite palaces, which is called reverse chanting. The Azure Dragon (青龙) is located in Xu, and Xu has Chen, so the first transmission is Chen with Jia; Chen has Xu, so the second transmission is Xu with Chen; the day branch is Chou, and Chou has Wei, so the third transmission is Wei with Chou; Wei has Chou, so the fourth transmission is Chou with Wei. The four lessons are mutually generating and not in conflict, so the method of well-lan shooting is used: the day branch Chou is remotely directed to the opposite Si palace, taking the earth palace Si position's Hai as the first transmission. The middle transmission is directed to the day branch deity Wei, and the final transmission is directed to the day stem deity Chen. The three transmissions are Hai, Wei, and Chen, forming the well-lan shooting pattern. The first transmission Hai is accompanied by the Azure Dragon, the middle transmission Wei is accompanied by the Teng Snake, and the final transmission Chen is accompanied by Tai Yin.
"The Ding'e says: Reverse recitation is also called 'wu yi' (no reliance). It is when the twelve heavenly kings exchange positions. If there is mutual control, the first transmission is still determined according to the usual rules of zhe ke, bi yong, and she hai. The upper and lower mutually conflict, coming and going, so one can only lament and sigh, unable to attain peace, hence called 'reverse recitation'; moreover, all the twelve kings have left their original positions, thus having no reliance and no place to depend on, so it is also called 'wu yi'."
In divination, if an affair involves two paths, both distant and near, and the mind is constantly wavering, unable to decide, then misfortune comes from outside and disputes arise from below. People part ways, yet doubts remain unresolved. Those who are settled may scatter, and those who go out may flee. Those who come wish to leave, while those who leave return. Gain and loss remain uncertain, residence changes, family relationships are incomplete, and illness involves two conflicting conditions. Travel is repeated and uncertain. Only restoring old matters brings benefit. Generally, all actions lack support, and one should seek stillness after prolonged movement. If the three transmissions are巳,亥,巳, it concerns movement, debt, property, and documents. If they are卯,酉,卯, it concerns home, gates, and roads. If they are寅,申,寅, it concerns long journeys, relocation, and disputes. If the spirits and generals are凶, then movement brings disaster, and troubles follow one after another. This lesson is mostly about action, but if both directions fall into Kongwang, then it cannot be judged by movement alone.
The term "Well Bracket Shooting" is also called "No Kinship." In a reverse transmission lesson, when the four lessons are not being overcome, the first transmission is obtained by taking the day branch diagonally, the middle transmission is taken from the god above the day branch, and the final transmission is taken from the god above the day stem. Only six days qualify for this condition: Dingwei, Jiwei, Xinwei, Dingchou, Jichou, and Xinchou. When there is no overcoming on Chou, the癸water in the Chou palace is used to shoot remotely at the丙fire in the Si palace; when there is no overcoming on Wei, the己earth in the Wei palace is used to shoot remotely at the壬water in the Hai palace. Therefore, on Chou days, the initial transmission is taken from the Hai position on the earth plate's Si position, and on Wei days, the initial transmission is taken from the Si position on the earth plate's Hai position. This is like leaning against the well bracket and shooting diagonally inward, where the arrow cannot leave the well mouth, hence it is called "Well Bracket Shooting." The entire lesson pattern is completely dispersed, scattered, and not connected, hence it is also called "No Kinship."
Divination interpretation: Strange events occur both inside and outside the family, with people at odds and separated; it is like several pieces of wood placed on top of a well, which tilt easily when pressed or touched, indicating an unstable situation. This reading favors action rather than inaction, as remaining still may lead to disturbance. Matters lack support, and one person must take on the role of two. It is easier to achieve goals by taking an indirect approach rather than a direct one. Things may develop quickly but also collapse quickly. If fortunate deities or capable generals are involved, about half of the matter may be accomplished, especially if the Azure Dragon appears to provide protection.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" text discusses the reverse transmission without support in the hexagram. On the days of Jiwei and Dingwei, the reverse transmission is taken differently from other reverse transmissions, and can be viewed in two ways—both days belong to the category of no support. For example, using the亥 general (Heavenly Stem) added to the巳 hour to cast the divination, when encountering the day of Dingwei, the Ding is lodged in the Wei palace, and the Wei position has the Chou, so the first transmission is Chou added to Ding. The Chou position has the Wei, so the second transmission is Wei added to Chou. According to the well frame method, the Wei is directly opposite the亥 palace, so the亥 position on the earth plate, which has the巳 (the name of the month general is "Taiyi"), is taken as the first transmission. However, these two divinations also meet the conditions of the eight special transmissions. According to the method of reversing three trines for yin days, the first transmission falls on the day stem's god Chou, and the day branch's god is also Chou, so it is used as the middle and final transmissions. The situation on the day of Jiwei is the same. The rhyme says: the intention of ministers abandoning a wise sovereign, sons deceiving and resenting their fathers; there will be worries of no descendants without cause, and those who already have guilt will fall into a trap; if further encountering凶 generals, rebellious and cunning, misfortunes will be especially severe. This refers to the reverse transmissions on these two days encountering凶 generals, hence indicating calamity.
In the case of a reversed transmission, all twelve heavenly stems are changed in position, with the gate of the northern Kan palace moving into the southern Li palace. Reversed transmissions can also be without mutual control; in such cases, on Yin days, the day branch is used to directly oppose and determine the initial transmission. Days without mutual control are: Dingchou, Xinchou, Dingwei, Jiwei, Xinwei, and Jichou. On these days, the initial transmission is determined by the day branch directly opposing its opposite. The heavenly stem on the opposing position becomes the initial transmission, the heavenly stem on the day branch becomes the middle transmission, and then the heavenly stem on the day stem is observed to determine the final transmission. For example, in the first month with the Hai general (Dengming) at the hour of Si, on the day of Xinchou, the four lessons are: Chen added to Xin, Xu added to Chen, Wei added to Chou, and Chou added to Wei. None of the four lessons are in mutual control, so the day branch Chou directly opposes its opposite. On the earth plate at the position of Si, we find Hai (the name of the month general, Dengming) as the initial transmission. On the day branch, we find Wei (the name of Xiaoji) as the middle transmission. On the day stem, we find Chen (the name of Tiangang) as the final transmission. This is the established method of the壬课 school. Learners should not arbitrarily fabricate interpretations. The key point is to observe which heavenly stem is opposed by the day branch and use that as the initial transmission. Then, the heavenly stem on the day branch is used for the middle transmission, and the heavenly stem on the day stem is used for the final transmission. This is the method of the lesson.
The song says, "A凶卦 indicates thieves arise," meaning that if the lesson pattern is凶, it leads to injury, and the matter of thieves will be fulfilled. "Those who have left find the road difficult to travel" means that those who have departed encounter obstacles on their way. "Father and son are not harmonious" indicates separation between father and son, difficulty in travel, and lack of harmony between them. "Family affection has no beginning or end" means that the relationship with relatives is difficult to conclude well. "If the three transmissions have a rescue, misfortune turns into the Azure Dragon" means that the Azure Dragon is the auspicious deity in this lesson. For details, refer to the annotations of "重审课"; as long as it appears, it will certainly turn misfortune into good fortune.
The "Heart Mirror" says: "No reliance indicates a reverse repetition." When predicting a person's escape, the person has run far away, so one must search far; originally partners should be separated; a built nest must be moved to another forest. Officials must be transferred to different posts; friends will part ways; both ministers and sons harbor resentment; husbands and wives have outside attachments. Matters done repeatedly indicate that the same thing happens again and again; when predicting illness, it means two diseases interfere with each other.
The "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: A reverse lesson involves yin and yang swapping positions, with punishment, clash, destruction, and harm all present, and matters always involving two sides. Heaven and earth are separated and disconnected, with north and south opposing each other; talent is discordant yet comes together, and then turns back yet moves forward; thoughts cannot be settled, yet are disturbed instead. It also says: Being without support is reverse, with punishment, clash, destruction, and harm all present, one matter splitting into two paths, distant and near both troubling the heart, and mutual resentment arising. Turning over and over in lamentation, it is as if no one takes anything away, yet one sighs alone. Separated yet reunited, turning back yet moving forward, wanting to act yet unable to, the heart hesitating between two options; troubles arise from outside, ministers neglecting the sovereign, sons rebelling against fathers, couples separating and abandoning each other, friends losing their loyalty; any action brings nothing, so what can one cling to? Only after prolonged movement, turning to stillness is the way.
On an odd day, when the divination shows a reversed pattern, there are often not just one but two matters involved, and even if the matters are resolved, there will still be a breakdown. If the '子' and '午' branches are accompanied by 'Teng Snake', it indicates disputes, illness, and misfortune. If the '卯' and '酉' branches are accompanied by 'Liu He', it suggests discord among people and loss of wealth. If the '寅' and '申' branches are accompanied by 'Azure Dragon', it indicates misfortune even if there is a wall between. The '巳' and '亥' branches, when appearing on days with 'Xin', will weaken the power of the moral spirits. The '辰' and '戌' branches are generally ominous, and even if they fall into 'Kongwang', they are unavoidable. The '丑' and '未' branches are also not auspicious. Only on a 'Gui' day, the agreed-upon time will not be missed. As for the reversed patterns on the six odd days, they are called 'Well Frame Lesson', like a wooden frame on a well's mouth, which tilts easily when pressed or touched, indicating an unstable situation that cannot last long.
The "Zhi Yao" says: Reverse transmission indicates a situation where heaven and earth are separated and the north and south are in conflict. When divining, it is favorable to movement rather than stillness; once stillness occurs, it will be disturbed, and one divination will bring about two matters. If all three transmissions are yin, it indicates delay; only when the first transmission is prosperous and strong is it considered appropriate. The matters it indicates usually come quickly. If the first transmission occurs on卯 or酉, it indicates instability in the household. If the method of taking transmission is well-barrel shooting, the divination indicates difficulty in achieving success and ease in failure, even if a good deity is encountered, only half of the matter can be fulfilled. Another view is: this lesson is unstable, and when divining about illness, it indicates the occurrence of two diseases at the same time.
Three Radiant Divination Method
When casting a divination, if the first transmission, the day stem, and the day branch all receive the qi of prosperity and strength, and there are also auspicious deities in between, it is called the "Three Radiance" lesson. The day stem represents the person; if the person receives the qi of prosperity and strength, not only can various ghosts and malevolent forces not overpower him, but the family members can also rise to prominence, which is the first radiance. The day branch represents the dwelling; if the dwelling receives the qi of prosperity and strength, not only is the living space spacious, but all kinds of evil spirits cannot enter, which is the second radiance. The first transmission represents the current actions and deeds; if the actions and deeds receive the qi of prosperity and strength, not only are the desired things unimpeded, but the affairs are also carried out with dignity and brilliance, which is the third radiance. If the deities in these three areas are further accompanied by auspicious generals, then the person has radiance, the dwelling has radiance, and the current actions and deeds also have radiance. The three together shine brightly, hence the name "Three Radiance." When this lesson is drawn, all matters can be pursued without difficulty and will succeed smoothly, and it brings auspiciousness. It corresponds to the "Zhen" hexagram in the Zhou Yi, representing a lesson of brightness and smoothness.
The image text says: The divination falls into the category of the Three Lights, so all matters will be auspicious and prosperous; those who were imprisoned or in trouble will be released, the sick will recover; those engaged in trade will gain profit, and all endeavors will be smooth; blessings will naturally come, and misfortunes will naturally disappear. If both the god and the general are harmonious and mutually generating, and the day stem is in a prosperous and strong state with the first transmission, it indicates promotion and honor in official positions, with joy throughout the entire process, and certainly there will be something to celebrate, with all things auspicious. Even if the personal destiny and the year's stem carry凶煞, it should not be considered as凶, corresponding to the image of the sixth line of the Zhen卦 (the卦 of贲), which says, "Bundles of silk are meager, there is a lack, but ultimately it is auspicious." This represents an initial state of frugality and lack, but ultimately leading to auspiciousness. Conversely, if the day stem and day branch fall after the "Tianyi" nobleman, and the middle and final transmissions are in a state of captivity or death, it indicates the loss of the Three Lights' brightness: although there may be some merit at the beginning, it is only a hollow joy, and later there will be blockage and difficulty; this corresponds to the image of the fourth line of the Zhen卦 (the卦 of贲), which originally intended to form a marriage with the first line, but was blocked by the third line, ultimately failing to mutually enhance each other.
For example, if the day stem is Jia and the time is Wei, the lesson is cast. The month general is You, and it is spring. The lodging palace of Jia is Yin. The You general is added to the Wei time. The heaven plate advances two positions relative to the earth plate, so Yin shows Chen. The first transmission is Chen with Jia. Chen shows Wu, so the second transmission is Wu with Chen (this example only shows two lessons from the day stem side). Jia wood overcomes Chen earth, meaning the upper god is overcome by the day stem, so Chen is taken as the first transmission. Wu on Chen is the middle transmission, and Shen on Wu is the final transmission. The three transmissions are Chen, Wu, and Shen, progressing in order. In spring, the wood energy is strong, and the day stem Jia wood is timely. The first transmission Chen is accompanied by 'Liu He', the middle transmission Wu by 'Azure Dragon', and the final transmission Shen by 'White Tiger'. Therefore, the lesson is judged as a 'Three Lights' lesson, indicating brightness in people, homes, and affairs.
The "Ding'E" says: "Three Lights" refer to the day stem, day branch, and first transmission all being prosperous and strong, and all riding on auspicious generals. The day stem represents the person, the day branch represents the dwelling, and the first transmission represents the action taken. When all three are prosperous and strong and ride on auspicious generals, they are called "Three Lights." In divination, this indicates clarity and smoothness, with all affairs being prosperous and flourishing, with nothing requiring great effort to achieve: officials will gain honor and distinction, the sick will recover safely, those in prison will be released, and merchants will gain profit. If the divine generals are harmonious and mutually generating, and both the first and final transmissions meet auspicious generals, then officials will have promotions and continuous good fortune, even if the native's birth year carries malevolent stars, it will not be considered ominous. This textbook focuses on auspiciousness, but the final transmission is most critical: if the day stem and day branch fall after Tianyi Nobleman, and the final transmission is in a state of captivity or death and rides on malevolent generals, it forms the "Three Lights losing their light" image. The previous good fortune is just empty joy, and the future remains blocked and difficult to pass.
The lesson "Observing the Menstrual Cycle" is called "Opening the Clouds to See the Sun." The mnemonic says, "If the Useful God is prosperous and strong, it is considered one light." This refers to situations like spring when wood is strong and fire is prosperous, and if the first transmission receives the energy of prosperity and strength, it is considered the first light. "When a good general is above, it is considered two lights," meaning if the first transmission is occupied by a favorable general such as Nobleman, Azure Dragon, Tai Chang, or Liu He, and it is also during a time of prosperity and strength, it is considered the second light. "If the day stem and day branch also have energy, the three lights remain unchanged," meaning if the day stem and day branch themselves also have energy, such as encountering Jia or Yi days in spring, or Bing or Ding days in summer, and both the day and time are appropriate, then the three lights will firmly stand without change.
The song continues, "When seeking something, it comes quickly, and when seeking official position, it will not be delayed." As long as there are no three punishments or six harms in the chart, it indicates good news and success in official matters. "The final transmission without punishments and harms, chariots and horses accompany constantly." This means if the final transmission does not carry punishments or harms, then there will be constant companionship and support. "When triple harmony and six harmonies meet, the period of ease and comfort comes." This refers to when the final transmission meets triple harmony or six harmonies, indicating good fortune and a carefree life. "Suddenly, punishments and harms break through, and the凶将 all frown." This means that once triple punishments, six harms, or a broken aspect combined withInauspicious General occur, it indicates that although ancestors had wealth, the descendants will gradually face difficulties and lack of resources.
The Xinjing says: If the first transmission, along with the day stem and day branch, are all prosperous and strong, and among the three transmissions there are auspicious deities in harmony, with all three lights standing together without mutual control, then doing anything brings joy. Even those who are sick can turn from danger to safety. Even if a malevolent general appears, it does not become a worry. Those who are imprisoned or involved in legal matters will have their affairs resolved without further trouble. It gives an example of a lesson cast at the time of寅 in the day ofWuyin in June, where all three transmissions are in a prosperous state, and there is a nobleman present, thus bringing exceptional honor and distinction.
The book "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: If the first transmission is prosperous and strong, and auspicious deities are present on the day stem and day branch, each having their own strength, and the final transmission also meets auspicious deities and auspicious generals or carries the harmonizing deity, then this is when three lights shine together, blessings naturally descend, and misfortunes naturally dissipate, there is no failure in prosperity. But if the first transmission is prosperous and strong, auspicious generals are present on the day stem and day branch with their own strength, yet the final transmission encounters malevolent generals, with mutual punishments and harms, then it is like having light but being obscured, and the original brightness turning into darkness: the ancestors originally had wealth, but later the family declined and became desolate. Whenever such a situation occurs, it is called "San Guang Mai Ying" (three lights buried in shadow), and one must carefully examine the final transmission, and not generally regard it as a favorable divination.
This is a divination lesson cast on the day of Wu Yin (戊寅) in the sixth lunar month. The sixth month uses the general of Wu (午将), and the time of divination is in the hour of Yin (寅时). The original text says "午时寅将" which is actually a reversed phrase and should be "寅时午将," as both the lesson format and the records in the book "Xin Jing" confirm. When the general of Wu is placed on the hour of Yin, the Heaven Plate is five positions ahead of the Earth Plate. The lodgment palace of Wu is in Si, and on Si there is You, so the first transmission is You over Wu. On You there is Chou, so the second transmission is Chou over You. On the day branch of Yin there is Wu, so the third transmission is Wu over Yin. On Wu there is Xu, so the fourth transmission is Xu over Wu. The four lessons do not have mutual control between upper and lower, nor do they have remote control. Therefore, the method of "Mao Star" is used to determine the transmissions. On a yang day, the god is taken from the Earth Plate's position of You, resulting in Chou as the first transmission. Then the god on the day branch, Wu, is taken as the middle transmission, and the god on the day stem, You, is taken as the final transmission. The three transmissions are Chou, Wu, and You. The first transmission, Chou, is occupied by the Nobleman; the middle transmission, Wu, is occupied by the White Tiger; the final transmission, You, is occupied by the Gou Chen. The Nobleman is currently on Chou and is moving backward, so the Heaven Plate counts backward from Chou: Teng Snake, Vermilion Bird, Liu He, Gou Chen. On the other side, the sequence is Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin, Yuan Wu, Tai Chang, White Tiger, Tian Kong, Qing Long. The original commentary says: although this lesson belongs to the "Hu Shi" pattern within the "Mao Star" lesson, it is still interpreted as the "San Guang" pattern. In summer, the three transmissions are Chou, which is the position of Wu, and there is the Nobleman on top of it. The lodgment palace of Wu is in Si, which means the day stem has strength. The day branch of Yin transmits to Wu, which also means the day branch has strength.
Three Yang Divination Lesson
When casting a divination, the "Heavenly Nobleman" moves in a clockwise direction. If the Day Stem and Day Branch are strong and their positions are before the Heavenly Nobleman, and the initial transmission is generated by the vigorous and strong energy, this is called the "Three Yang Lesson." The Heavenly Nobleman moves leftward in a clockwise direction, indicating that affairs follow the proper way, which is the first Yang. The Day Stem and Day Branch being ahead of the Heavenly Nobleman indicates that the Yang energy can be expressed freely, which is the second Yang. The Day Stem and Day Branch themselves being in a prosperous and strong position indicates that the Yang energy progresses step by step, which is the third Yang. When these three conditions are combined, the Yang energy becomes open and prosperous, and all things shine brightly. If further aided by auspicious generals, it is called the "Three Yang." When this lesson is cast, all matters are auspicious and the desires of the seeker can be fulfilled. It corresponds to the "Progress" hexagram in the Zhou Yi, symbolizing a fortunate omen of a precious sword from Longquan.
The image text says: The divination falls into the Three Yang, indicating officials and titles rise high like flying birds; disputes and imprisonment are resolved, illness brings no hindrance; seeking wealth is auspicious and fulfilling, travelers return home; bandits come but no battle is needed, and pregnant women give birth to capable sons. If the divine generals are in mutual generation, all endeavors and plans proceed smoothly: officials receive promotion, the sick even if near death in the coffin can recover, prisoners even with a knife at their neck are safe; even if encountering punishment and harm, good fortune will not be delayed, which corresponds to the image of the sixth line of the Hexagram of Progress, "Going is auspicious, no disadvantage." Conversely, if the celestial master and nobleman fall on the hour of Chen or Xu, it is called "the nobleman sitting in prison"—prison is inherently a place of darkness, where can there be any yang energy? Moreover, if the first transmission becomes a ghostly evil that harms the day stem, and the middle and final transmissions lack a saving deity, then the Three Yang are blocked: affairs are unclear and difficult to achieve, inevitably leading to initial good fortune followed by misfortune, which corresponds to the image of the ninth line of the Hexagram of Progress, "Progressing like a shi mouse, firmness brings danger."
For example, if the class is cast on the day of Yi Chou with the hour of You, and the month general is Xu. Yi is located in the lodging palace of Chen, and Xu adds to You. The heaven plate advances one position ahead of the earth plate: Chen has Si, the first lesson is Si added to Yi; Si has Wu, the second lesson is Wu added to Si; the day branch Chou has Yin, the third lesson is Yin added to Chou; Yin has Mao, the fourth lesson is Mao added to Yin. Among the four lessons, only the mutual control between Yin wood and Chou earth occurs. Therefore, Yin is chosen as the first transmission, Mao on Yin as the middle transmission, and Chen on Mao as the final transmission. The three transmissions are Yin, Mao, and Chen, connected in order. At this time, the heavenly nobleman is Zi, located on the earth plate position Hai, and moves forward. The day stem and day branch are both before the nobleman. The first transmission Yin is the strong wood of spring added to Chou, thus fulfilling the three conditions. Therefore, it is judged as a San Yang lesson. The first transmission Yin is ridden by the Vermilion Bird, the middle transmission Mao is ridden by Liu He, and the final transmission Chen is ridden by Gou Chen.
The "Ding'uo" says: "San Yang" refers to three things: the Heavenly Nobleman moving in a clockwise direction, the Day Stem and Day Branch being ahead of the Nobleman, and the First Transmission being prosperous and strong. The Nobleman moving to the left signifies smooth Yang energy, which is the first point; the Day Stem and Day Branch preceding the Nobleman indicate extended Yang energy, which is the second point; and the First Transmission being prosperous and strong represents advancing Yang energy, which is the third point. When these three conditions are met, Yang energy becomes flourishing, hence called "San Yang." In divination, this portends good fortune; whatever one seeks will be fulfilled: officials will receive promotion, those in legal trouble will be released, the sick will recover, those seeking wealth will obtain it, travelers will return, thieves will retreat, and pregnant women will give birth to noble children. If the spirits and generals are favorable and the elements generate each other, it certainly indicates a high promotion in official rank, even if there are punishments or harms, they will not cause any trouble.
This lesson is generally auspicious, but if the Tianyi Nobleman falls on the辰 or 戌, it is called "Nobleman in Prison." Prison belongs to the yin, where yang cannot exist. If further, the first transmission transforms into a ghost or evil spirit that attacks the day stem, and the middle and final transmissions lack a protective deity, then the three yangs will no longer be smooth. Matters will become confused and difficult to achieve, starting auspicious but later turning adverse. Another pattern: if the lesson and transmissions contain the six yang branches 子, 寅, 辰, 午, 申, 戌, it is called "Six Yang Lesson," which is suitable for official matters and not for personal gain.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" says: The first yang is the nobleman, who moves in a favorable direction and the first transmission receives strong energy; the second yang is knowing that a good heavenly general is present above the first transmission; the third yang proceeds in order and so on. Those who consult about illness will not die, and even if death seems certain, they can recover. Prisoners will escape calamity, those facing execution will be innocent and escape danger. Any action will be auspicious, and seeking wealth will bring benefit. Even if there are conflicts or harm, good fortune will not be delayed.
The Xin Jing says: When Tian Yi Guiren moves in the order of the heavenly stems, it is considered the first yang; if the day stem and day branch have vitality and are located before Guiren, it is considered the second yang; and if the first transmission is also prosperous and strong, then the three yangs are complete, resulting in good fortune and safety. If the upper and lower elements mutually generate and the deities and generals are auspicious, then traveling is beneficial, and there will be promotion in official rank; illness will be cured, lawsuits will be cleared, and everything will be favorable. Even if there is punishment or harm, there will be no mistakes. It also says: Although a knife is placed at the neck, there will ultimately be no misfortune.
The book "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: The nobleman, Heaven's Ethereal, proceeds in order to handle affairs, with the Azure Dragon and Liu He positioned before the day stem. The final transmission is prosperous and strong, giving birth to the first transmission, and the time of divination gives birth to the person's destiny year. The so-called three yangs are: the nobleman proceeds in order to handle affairs, which is the first; the first transmission is prosperous and strong, which is the second; and the auspicious general manifests in the first transmission, which is the third. Whenever one divines about all matters, it is great auspiciousness, symbolizing brightness and smoothness, growth and nourishment. Any action will be prosperous and flourishing. The sick can recover, and prisoners can be innocent.
The "Four Smooth" category is established in "Ding E": although the spirit general of the first transmission is凶, the spirit of the final transmission is吉, this is the first smooth; although the first transmission is in a dead or imprisoned position, the final transmission is in a prosperous and strong position, this is the second smooth; the heavenly master nobleman moves in the correct direction, this is the third smooth; all three transmissions are arranged before the heavenly master nobleman, this is the fourth smooth. All four aspects are favorable, hence the name "Four Smooth". In divination, it indicates that although the matter starts with obstacles and stagnation, it will ultimately be smooth and successful.
Three Marvels Divination
When casting a divination, if the initial transmission comes from the旬奇 or the day's奇, or if it falls within the three transmissions, it is called a "Three Marvels Lesson." The旬奇 are divided according to the six Jia (Heavenly Stems) decades: in the Jiazi and Jiaxu decades, the branch Chou is taken; in the Jiashen and Jiawu decades, the branch Zi is taken; in the Jiachen and Jiayin decades, the branch Hai is taken. These three branches are called "Three Marvels of the Decade." The日奇 are divided according to the day's stem: on a Jia day, the branch Wu is taken; on a Yi day, the branch Si is taken; on a Bing day, the branch Chen is taken; on a Ding day, the branch Mao is taken; on a Wu day, the branch Yin is taken; on a Ji day, the branch Chou is taken; on a Geng day, the branch Wei is taken; on a Xin day, the branch Shen is taken; on a Ren day, the branch You is taken; on a Gui day, the branch Xu is taken. This is called "Daily Marvel." Why are the branches Chou, Zi, and Hai chosen? Chickens crow at the hour of Chou, and by then the sun's vital energy is complete; cranes cry at the hour of Zi in the middle of the night, and by then the moon's vital energy is complete; the handle of the Big Dipper points to the branch Hai, and by then the stars' vital energy is complete. Moreover, Chou is the Jade Hall, Zi is the Bright Hall, and Hai is the Red Palace. These three places represent the essence of the sun, moon, and stars, and are used as extraordinary spirits in the six decades. Therefore, they are called "Three Marvels." When this lesson is cast, all kinds of troubles disappear, and all matters are auspicious. It corresponds to the Yu hexagram in the Zhou Changes, which represents a lesson of harmony and joy between above and below.
The image and words say: All things harmonize, and all kinds of calamities are removed; when seeking a wife, one can find a virtuous and gentle woman, and when pregnant, one will give birth to a noble child; scholars may have extraordinary encounters, and the sick may meet a good physician. Even if one rides on an evil general, misfortune will retreat and good fortune will come. If both the旬奇 and日奇 are present in the calculation, it is the best among auspicious calculations; even if only旬奇 is present without日奇, it is still acceptable. If the three transmissions include亥, 子, and 丑, it is called "three marvels in a line," which is very auspicious. If this is further combined with the heavenly three marvels 乙, 丙, and 丁, or the earthly three marvels 甲, 戊, and 庚 hidden in the three transmissions, it is especially favorable: officials may be promoted beyond normal ranks due to outstanding achievements, armies may win by using unexpected tactics, and all affairs can turn danger into safety. This corresponds to the image of the Yu hexagram's six in the second, "Zhen Ji" (upright auspiciousness). Conversely, if only the day stem's marvel is present without the旬奇, and the divine general is凶, it corresponds to the image of the Yu hexagram's six at the beginning, "Ming Yu, Xiong" (loud joy, calamity).
For example, on the day of Yi You with the hour of Wei, the lesson is cast with the Month General being Shen. Yi's Lodging Palace is in Chen. Shen is placed on Wei hour, and the Heaven Plate advances one position ahead of the Earth Plate: Chen has Si, the first lesson is Si added to Yi; Si has Wu, the second lesson is Wu added to Si; the Day Branch You has Xu, the third lesson is Xu added to You; Xu has Hai, the fourth lesson is Hai added to Xu. Among the four lessons, only the fourth lesson, Xu Earth, is below and thus inversely controls Hai Water, which is considered 'thief', so Hai is taken as the first transmission. The child of Hai, Zi, is the second transmission; the child of Zi, Chou, is the third transmission. The three transmissions, Hai, Zi, and Chou, form a continuous sequence. On the day of Yi You, which belongs to the Jiashen decade, the original odd is Zi. Now Zi is in the second transmission, and the three characters Hai, Zi, and Chou are all present, forming the 'Three Marvels in a Row'. The first transmission, Hai, is accompanied by 'Heavenly Empress'; the second transmission, Zi, is accompanied by 'Nobleman'; the third transmission, Chou, is accompanied by 'Teng Snake'. Additionally, 'Tai Yin', 'Tian Kong', and 'Azure Dragon' are seen among the four lessons.
"The Book of Rectifying Errors" says: The so-called "Three Marvels" refer to the "Tens Day Marvels" appearing in the first transmission or falling into the third transmission. There are also three other types of marvels: "Linked Pearl Marvels," "Hidden Marvels," and "Celestial Marvels." The method of selecting the "Tens Day Marvels" is as follows: for the Jiazi and Jiaxu tens, use Chou; for the Jiashen and Jiawu tens, use Zi; for the Jiachen and Jiayin tens, use Hai. This is called "Tens Day Marvels." Chou is the Jade Hall, where the chicken crows at Chou time and the sun's essence is complete; Zi is the Bright Hall, where the crane caws at Zi time and the moon's essence is complete; Hai is the Crimson Palace, where the handle of the Big Dipper points to Hai and the star's essence is complete. The essences of the sun, moon, and stars form six marvels in the sixty-day cycle, hence they are called the "Three Marvels." If the three transmissions are exactly Hai, Zi, and Chou, it is called "Linked Pearl Marvels." If the three celestial marvels Yi, Bing, and Ding and the three earthly marvels Jia, Wu, and Geng are hidden within the transmission of the lesson, it is called "Hidden Marvels." As for the "Celestial Marvels," they are when on a Jia day the transmission is Wu, on a Yi day it is Si, on a Bing day it is Chen, on a Ding day it is Mao, on a Wu day it is Yin, on a Ji day it is Chou, on a Geng day it is Wei, on a Xin day it is Shen, on a Ren day it is You, and on a Gui day it is Xu. This sequence is called "Celestial Marvels." When both the "Tens Day Marvels" and the "Celestial Marvels" appear in the lesson, it is the best. If only the "Tens Day Marvels" are present without the "Celestial Marvels," it is still acceptable. However, if only the "Celestial Marvels" are present without the "Tens Day Marvels," it cannot be called the "Three Marvels."
In the interpretation of this divination, all matters can turn from misfortune to good fortune, and one need not fear legal troubles or conflicts. Scholars may encounter unexpected opportunities, officials may be promoted beyond regular ranks due to outstanding achievements, and military campaigns may succeed through the use of unconventional strategies. Marriages will be harmonious, pregnancies will result in noble children, and illnesses or legal disputes can be resolved. However, if the special deity (奇神) happens to be in the position of Kongwang, the vital energy of the deity will be weakened, and the fortune will be reduced by half, resulting in an initial clarity followed by darkness. Whether good or bad, nothing will come to fruition.
The "Observing the Monthly Cycle" refers to the Three Marvels as "Withered Wood Regaining Life." The mnemonic says, "Jiazi and Jiaxu, Daji and the two weeks are marvelous": within these two weeks, if the month general "Daji" (Chou) is the first transmission, it is considered the Three Marvels. Even if it is accompanied by a malevolent general, it still results in good fortune; even if "Daji" appears only in the third transmission, it is still good and not bad. "Jiashen and Jiawu, Shenhou follows closely": within these two weeks, if the "Shenhou" (Zi) is the first transmission, it is considered the Three Marvels. "Jiachen and Jiayin, Dengming is the healer": within these two weeks, if the "Dengming" (Hai) is the initiating transmission, it is also considered the Three Marvels. In divination for illness, recovery is quick; in legal matters, disputes are resolved immediately. In summary, all matters are harmonious, and all kinds of misfortunes are quickly dispelled. Once the characters Hai, Zi, and Chou appear consecutively, all kinds of troubles will be removed. This pattern, starting from the "Yuan Dao Gu" (Original Dao Hexagram), serves as the foundation.
There are nine formulas using the亥 general for divination: Guiyou, Yiyou, Bingxu, Dingyou, Wuxu, Jiyou, Gengxu, Xinyou, and Renxu. On these nine days, when divination is done at the戌 hour with the亥 general, the three transmissions exactly form亥, 子, and 丑. The three transmissions of these nine formulas are connected in sequence, like pulling up mugwort roots that are linked together, so they are called "Three Marvels Chart." If the heavenly general and heavenly deity involved are also in a prosperous and strong condition, then it is a very auspicious formula.
On the same day of Jiazi with the hour of Xu, the three transmissions are Chen, Si, and Wu, which also count as the Three Marvels. On the day of Yichou, the three transmissions are Yin, Mao, and Chen; on the day of Bingyin, they are Chen, Si, and Wu; on the day of Dingmao, they are also Chen, Si, and Wu. These patterns are all derived using the method of comparison or the method of involving harm. On the day of Renshen, the three transmissions are Chou, Yin, and Mao; on the day of Jiaxu, they are Chen, Si, and Wu; on the day of Dingchou, they are Shen, You, and Xu; on the day of Wuyin and Jimao, they are Chen, Si, and Wu. On the day of Gengchen, the three transmissions are Wu, Wei, and Shen, which are cases of the heavenly spirit remotely attacking the day stem. On the day of Xinsi, the three transmissions are Wu, Wei, and Shen, which are also cases of the heavenly spirit remotely attacking the day stem. On the day of Renwu, the three transmissions are Chou, Yin, and Mao, with the three characters in consecutive positions. Whenever the three transmissions are arranged in order from the first to the last, it is called "Shun Lian Ru"; when arranged in reverse order from the last to the first, it is called "Nie Lian Ru." There are too many examples to list them all. The first part before the time of divination is called "Shun Lian Ru," and the part after the time of divination is called "Nie Lian Ru." Both should be interpreted according to the prosperity, strength, decline, and decay of the heavenly spirit and the general at that time. The nine previous lessons are mostly auspicious. The Three Marvels hexagram is a divine helper within the lesson, and it can be used to establish the foundation.
The Xin Jing says: The Three Marvels should be determined according to the sixty jing cycles. Two origins are clearly distinguished, yet they share the same name. The hexagram has two kinds, and the marvel spirits also have two kinds. In the Jia Shen and Jia Wu cycles, the Zi (name 'Shenhou') is taken. In the Jia Yin and Jia Chen cycles, the Hai (name 'Dengming') is taken. In the Jia Zi and Jia Xu cycles, the Chou (name 'Da Ji') is taken. With these, one does not fear malevolent influences or the Three Punishments. It also mentions another path for the daily marvel: On a Jia day, the Wu (name 'Shengguang') is taken; on a Yi day, the Si is taken. Starting from Wu on Jia, Wu is its marvel. Yi retreats to Si, and proceeds in reverse until Chou. This is called 'Branches go in reverse, Stems go in order until Ji Chou stops': the reverse counting stops at Chou on Ji day, then turns back to start from Wei on Wu day for Geng as the marvel. 'Geng proceeds in order, the marvel is at Wei': on Geng day, the marvel is at Wei. Then proceeding in order, by the time it reaches the癸 day, it lands at Xu (name 'Tian Kuai'). Thus, the marvel spirits of all ten stems have their proper positions, and none fail to be effective. When both marvels are encountered in divination, there is naturally joy. Even if only one of the two marvels is obtained, it is considered auspicious.
The "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: The Three Marvels are not outside the three characters of亥, 子, and 丑, which are distributed according to the sixty cycles for their initiating transmission; each lesson pattern has its own standard form, and one should not be overly rigid about the marvel deities. In the Jiazi and Jiaxu cycles, 丑 is taken; in the Jiashen and Jiawu cycles, 子 is taken; in the Jiachen and Jiayin cycles, 亥 is taken, indicating the dispersal of calamities and the arrival of blessings. Generally speaking, when the three heavenly stems are connected in sequence, things often tend to be neither fully achieved nor fully stopped, leading to complications. A smooth connection (shun lian ru) is when the sequence advances first and then retreats, which is auspicious and orderly; an inverse connection (ni lian ru) is when the sequence retreats first and then advances, indicating that in divination, there will be signs of discord among people, with brothers and friends experiencing strained relations. As for the "dead Three Marvels hexagram," the section on "dead marvel hexagram" in the following text explains it clearly.
