Saturn and the Moon孛 are mixed together, while Venus and Mercury move in opposite directions: Saturn and孛 fight each other, causing chaos among the stars; Venus and Mercury retreat and stop, appearing useful but actually not, seeming to come but not arriving. The sun and moon sink and are covered by darkness, with the ruling star of destiny and the mother star falling into weakness and losing their original positions: the sun and moon either meet darkness or encounter an eclipse, or are obscured by Jupiter or Purple Qi, or are afflicted by Saturn or Ji Du. Combined with the ruling star and the mother star being weak and in decline, this is called 'unclear'. Or, someone born during the day is placed under stars that belong to the night, or someone with a yin destiny encounters yang stars: the sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Purple Qi, Ji Du, and Mercury are yang stars, while the moon, Mars, Venus, Luo Hui, and Moon孛 are yin stars. For example, someone born during the day but with the sun in the hexagram of Wei, yet the destiny palace and the limits are placed in寅 or卯; or someone born at night but with the moon in the hexagram of Wu, yet the destiny palace and the limits are placed in Wei or Shen.
The slave star andInauspicious Sha (evil killing stars) attack each other, completely ignoring the sovereign star: the four additional slave stars and killing stars fight directly, without regard for the sun, the sovereign. The person's destiny and the mother star are in a weakened position, so the mother cannot help the son: when the mother star is weak, it naturally cannot support the child it generates. The body palace and destiny palace fall into the slave servant palace and the post-horse palace, and are further controlled by the four additional slave stars: the person's destiny and the too-yin star are both in the sixth palace, well mansion, post-horse, and yang blade positions, which is even more dangerous when the slave star attacks the main star and evil killing stars appear. The difficult star disrupts the main path, and instead blocks the auspicious mansion: the eight killing stars and the difficult star fight along the path of the life span, and instead hinder the auspicious stars that were originally meant to protect. If this is further compounded by the star that generates me being in a weak and declining position, this person will certainly be stubborn and unwilling to change: when the generating star is in a weak and declining position, the person lacks trust and respect, is ignorant and self-opinionated, lowly and domineering, and refuses to correct mistakes.

Such a situation where the auspicious star and the auspicious palace are overshadowed by malevolent stars, even if one neglects self-cultivation and reflection, it will be of no help: when the auspicious star and the position of virtue are harmed by malevolent stars, the person will certainly abandon the practice of self-cultivation and virtue; once the fortune is damaged, nothing one does will be effective. The eight categories mentioned above emphasize the principle of moderation: wealth, status, poverty, lowliness, longevity, short life, wisdom, and foolishness all ultimately depend on the principle of moderation. The five luminaries and four additional stars should be discerned through the principles of generation, control, restriction, and transformation: the following are general interpretations of all the stars. The five luminaries are metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, while the four additional stars are Purple Qi, Moon孛, RuoHou, and JiDu, and all should be understood according to the principles of generation, control, restriction, and transformation. The three directions and four cardinal points should be examined in terms of their hooking, shooting, adding, and approaching: the three directions such as Shen-Zi-Chen, and the four cardinal points such as Zi-Wu-Mao-You, as well as opposing directions, added plates, hooking combinations, and supporting gates, etc.

The height or lowliness of a configuration depends on carefully examining the stars and determining where each prefers to be comfortable. Once the stars form a configuration, one should also investigate whether their preferences and comforts are suitable. The sun is the supreme among the stars, and the moon is the master of the body. The sun represents a ruler, so it should be elevated and in its proper position. The moon represents a minister, and it is the main controller of the body. Just as a person's fate, if the time of birth is inaccurate and the positions of all stars are wrong, only the moon follows the path of waxing and waning, often finding a suitable position.
The sun directly shines upon, causing all hostile forces to withdraw their sharp edges: when various stars are fighting each other, if the sun shines upon them, they will certainly stop attacking each other. A solitary moon shining alone brings a lifetime of health and peace: if the moon is alone and its palace and destiny palace can turn into good fortune, and it is located in the constellations of Angle, Bucket, Well, and Kui, or rises into the palace of the moon, then it will bring a lifetime of health and peace. The sun and moon most prefer to be flanked by auspicious stars; the water star and gold star must be clearly positioned: the sun and moon are most suitable to be flanked by auspicious stars; the water and gold stars should be clearly separated, with water in front and gold behind, and it is not good if they are confused or reversed.
When the metal and water elements meet in the same palace, the water star is disliked when it retreats behind the metal star; during the conjunction of the sun and moon, the moon is favorable when it appears before the sun: water preceding metal indicates that water is generated by metal; the moon preceding the sun means the moon can borrow the sun's light. The stars Ji Du and Luo Hui are most disliked during new and full moons. The fire star and earth star each have their own dislikes during day and night: the sun is disliked when it meets Luo Hui on a new moon day, and the moon is disliked when it meets Ji Du on a full moon day; during the day, the presence of fire and Luo Hui is unfavorable, and during the night, the presence of earth and Ji Du is unfavorable. When fire and Luo Hui meet in summer, they often bring sorrow and crying; when gold and water stars are born in winter, they inevitably lead to loneliness and hardship: those born in summer encountering fire and Luo Hui suffer from injuries and sorrow; those born in winter face coldness and hardship due to the coldness of metal and water.

Water star and Metal star are favorable when close to the body palace and destiny palace, while the Sun and Moon stars prefer to be in a conjunction with the fortune virtue and official position palaces: Metal and Water stars should be near the body and destiny palaces, while the Sun and Moon stars are most auspicious when they form a conjunction with the official position and fortune virtue palaces. The Sun and Moon stars residing separately in the Star Mansion and Extended Net Mansion, with a supporting star, are indeed signs of a distinguished guest: when the Sun is in the Star Mansion and the Moon is in the Extended Net Mansion, each rising into their respective noble positions, and there is a supporting star that leads and follows without any conflict, this is a sign of a distinguished guest. If the Metal and Water stars are in the Qiu and Bi Mansions without any mixed stars, they are certain to attain official positions.

The stars of metal and water are located in the constellations of Qui and Bi: Qui and Bi are the stars of noblemen and the sources of literary talent, hence the sayings "five stars in line" and "five stars gathering in Qiu" indicate places where literary fortune is concentrated. When the star of metal is in the constellation of Can or Bi, it is called "metal generates water"; when the star of water is in the constellation of Qiu or Dou, it is called "water generates wood": the virtue of mutual generation without confusion is the mark of literati and noble persons. When the sun and moon lose their proper positions, one will achieve nothing in old age: when the sun and moon fall into evil or weak places, and the stars Ji Du and Luo Hui invade their positions, this is the case. When the stars of metal and water exchange their native constellations, there will be continuous good fortune throughout life: when the star of water is in the native constellation of metal, and the star of metal is in the native constellation of water, it is a great blessing.

If they are stationed in Guchen and Guasu, they indicate longevity but with isolation and mutual control. The Golden Star and Moon孛 riding on the Post-horse and sitting on Taohua indicate a person who is disrespectful and licentious: when the Golden Star and Moon孛 enter the Post-horse and Taohua sectors, the person is definitely licentious and immoral. Ji Du and Luo Hui should not invade the palace position, and the Fire Star and Golden Star should not exchange their original domains: Ji Du and Luo Hui should not occupy the palace position of the main domain or enter the degrees of the sun and moon; the Fire Star should not enter the original domain of the Golden Star, and the Golden Star should not enter the original domain of the Fire Star, because they fear mutual attack and mutual control.

The combination of metal and water in the命宫 along with the official position indicates success in fame and achievement: metal and water support the命宫 and assist the official position, thus fame and success naturally come about. The moon and the rooster star (罗睺) are harmful and injure the life span, and they transform into criminal and captive stars, leading to death and loss of wealth: the moon and rooster star are originally evil stars; if they further transform into criminal and captive stars, their malevolence becomes even greater. The fire star is unfavorable when it appears in the daytime and conflicts with the sun star; the earth star is disliked when it appears at night and obstructs the single moon: the fire star transforms into a dark star, and its appearance at daytime is unfavorable when it is in the same position as the sun; the earth star transforms into a criminal star, and its appearance at night is unfavorable when it is in the same position as the moon. The sun star sinking into the servant宫 is ultimately disadvantageous, while the moon star falling into the idle宫 brings good fortune: the sun star is unfavorable when it enters the servant宫, causing harm to the destiny. The classic text of Yelü氏 states that although the brother宫 is a place of evil and weakness, the moon star residing there is actually auspicious.

Those with Jupiter and Purple Star passing through their命宫 tend to live freely in mountains and forests: When two wood stars pass through the命宫, the person is mostly suited for retirement in the mountains and springs. Those whose destiny is in the Turtle Beak mansion tend to migrate and wander; if they encounter a favorable and vigorous position, they will engage in commerce: people with the Turtle Beak star as their destiny are unsettled and tend to move around; if they encounter a favorable and vigorous place, they like to travel and do business. Those whose destiny is in the Ghost mansion are cunning and scheming; if they are also strong and powerful, they will certainly be leaders in military affairs: those whose destiny is in the Ghost mansion and the Moon is in the Turtle Beak mansion are shallow people, who are cunning and scheming, and their lives will always be difficult and uneven.

However, it may also lead to loneliness and conflicts, making it difficult to get along with family. The person's body palace falls in the position of the Yang Blade, and the fire star and Luo Hui are seated in the appearance palace. This indicates a fate of hanging oneself: the Yang Blade is the leader of all destructive forces. The star of the body palace and the main destiny star are located above it, and since the fire and Luo Hui stars are fierce and impetuous, sitting in the appearance palace, this person will certainly end his life by hanging himself or cutting his throat. The fortune star and official star control the post-horse and face the sun, making them a noble guest of the Jade Hall: the master of fortune and virtue, along with the official star, control the Heavenly Horse and Earthly Post, and are close to the sun, thus occupying a favorable position and time. The sun and moon are in a harmonious relationship with the official position and face the命宫, which is particularly unusual: the sun and moon each have their own positions, either supporting the official position or the official stars, and if they also face and point towards the命宫, it is even more remarkable; if they are opposite and fall into a bad position, their influence is naturally weaker. The most prosperous situation is when the sun and moon are both supporting the wealth宫, and the wealth star is in a strong position, leading to enjoyment of blessings: if the wealth宫 is supported by the sun and moon, or the sun and moon support the wealth star, and the wealth宫 and wealth star are in a favorable and strong position, it indicates enjoying wealth and blessings; if they are affected by the Four Losses, they will suffer financial loss and reduced blessings.

A person who is lonely and suffers from mutual punishment is when the Jupiter, Purple Star, and Rahu are stationed at their body and life positions, and they are located in the regions of Guchen and Guasu. Jupiter, Purple Star, and Rahu are all solitary stars, and it is not suitable for them to guard the destiny; the Moon also should avoid being stationed in Guchen and Guasu regions, as such a person would be refined and solitary. A person who is licentious and of low morality is when the Venus, Mercury, and Moon孛 are stationed at their body and life positions, and they are located in the regions of Capping and Xianchi. Venus and Mercury are inherently licentious stars, and when they are stationed in Capping and Xianchi, the person is certainly licentious. If not suffering themselves, they will certainly injure their close relatives.
Female destiny patterns
For a female's destiny, one should not only consider the structure and pattern but also focus specifically on the spirit of the stars used: unlike male destiny which relies on structure and pattern, female destiny should seek the flourishing and proper position of the useful god. If the body palace and life palace are clear and upright, and wealth and fortune virtue are not broken, then the woman's body and life are seated in auspicious positions, and the wealth and fortune palaces are not broken, naturally she can support her husband and enjoy happiness. If the husband's star transforms into a noble deity and ascends to its own palace, there will certainly be a title or honor: the husband's star is the ruler of the seventh palace. If it enters its proper position and ascends to its palace, transforming into fortune,禄, nobility, and authority, and is supported by the season, not falling into Kongwang, the husband will certainly be considered noble. For example, if the husband's ruler is the fire star, sitting in the Wings mansion or in the palace of fire, and encountering summer season, being born at night, and without the presence of the water star or moon孛, this is considered excellent.
The person's main star enters the Fortune Virtue palace and sits in the Wealth palace, indicating marriage into a wealthy family: For a woman's fate, the main star is the key support, determining all good or bad fortune. For example, if she is born in autumn or during a bright night when the moon is not waning or new, and the main star transforms into a beneficial deity residing in the Wealth or Fortune Virtue palace, she will marry into a wealthy family. Her husband and son will both be prominent and esteemed, and she may receive two official commendations: For instance, if the husband's star and the son's star are located in the Jade Hall Nobleman position, transforming into禄 (favorable official rank), 贵 (noble status), 权 (authority), or 印 (seal of office), or if they themselves are official stars and fortune stars entering the Official Rank and Fortune Virtue palaces, then both husband and son will be esteemed, and she may receive two official commendations. However, if there is a clash or disruption, this prediction will not hold.
The sun and moon shining together indicate that this woman will have great authority in her lifetime: as long as the sun and moon are in the same palace, she will certainly be born on the morning of the first day of the month; if the moon is before the sun, she will certainly diminish her husband's authority and take it for herself. Such a woman can establish her own career and is knowledgeable in literature, arithmetic, and numerology; she should not be generally considered as evil. The ruler of the fifth palace entering official position and fortune virtue indicates that the son will certainly be a talented person: the fifth palace is the position of children, and the star of the child transforms into official position, fortune virtue, authority, and status, and with the right timing enters official position and fortune virtue, without falling into kongwang or being broken by conflict, the son will certainly be virtuous.
The seventh palace's star mansion reaches the fields, property, wealth, and husband: The seventh palace represents the husband's position. If the ruler of this palace is in season and not in Kongwang, not conflicting or broken, and not transformed into a criminal or imprisoned star, but enters the fields, property, wealth, then the husband certainly has flourishing wealth and property. The husband's star fears encountering凶杀 (malevolent killing), and the son's star fears being touched or conflicted. It is also disliked to have the difficult star to injure. For example, if the fire star is the husband's star, it fears encountering the water star and the moon孛 (moon孛) to suppress and control; if the water star is the son's star, it dislikes encountering the earth star and the counter star 计都 (Ji Du) to contradict and resist.
The Moon is rising into its native palace and falls into the position of Fortune and Virtue, which can lead to gaining status through a son: When the Moon is at its full phase, transforms into a beneficial star without any defects, or falls into theHai Palace (Hai Palace) Heaven Gate or the constellations of Qiu, Bi, Jiao, Lou, Zhang, Bi, it is certain that the son born will be intelligent and noble. The Sun is in its proper position and appears in the opposite palace, which indicates the wife will respect her husband: The opposite palace is the husband's position, the Sun represents the king's image and appears in theWu Palace (Wu Palace) orZi Palace (Xu Palace), or the命宫 (Destiny Palace) is located there. Also, if the Moon is in the Zhang constellation and the person is born at night, they will also respect their husband; however, it is forbidden for the planet Saturn, Ji Du, the planet Mercury, and Zi Qi to be in the same position.
If the destiny ruler is the official star and the body ruler is the fortune virtue star, this woman will certainly be respectful and virtuous. If the husband star transforms into a nobleman and the son star transforms into a禄 star, she can receive imperial honors. If the destiny ruler is the official star and the body ruler is the fortune virtue star, she will surely attain the title of a virtuous wife. If the husband star transforms into a noble god and enters the Jade Hall position with favorable timing, and the son star transforms into a禄 star and enters the official salary and fortune virtue position or the nobleman's position, this woman will certainly be the wife of a nobleman.
The stars of Venus and Moon孛 should not be near the body's palace, and the Post-horse and Yang Blade should not interfere with the命宫: if Venus and孛 both enter the命宫, the person tends to be licentious and fond of pleasures; the Post-horse and Yang Blade, when combined with凶杀 stars, should not transform into criminal stars. If the body and命宫 lack support, misfortune and calamity will arise. For both male and female destinies, the stars that are essential should not be joined by difficult stars: the essential stars in a person's destiny fear the joining of difficult stars with variousInauspicious Sha stars, which will attack the命宫 and the life limits. The Yin and Yang palaces and degrees prefer mutual harmony and generation: Yin palaces and Yang palaces, Yin degrees and Yang degrees, should be harmonious and mutually generating to bring good fortune, which is most valuable. When observing stars, one should understand their nature, and when discussing life periods, one should clarify the palaces and degrees.
The following are general interpretations of the stars. Mars, Rahu, Kedou, and Yuebo are fierce and violent in nature, while Venus, Mercury, Zi Qi, and Jupiter are gentle and benevolent. If these stars afflict a particular star degree or limit, their effects should be judged according to their inherent nature, whether good or bad, and the gains and losses will become clear. When discussing the limits, one must determine which palace and degree the star is passing through, whether it is harmonious or conflicting, and whether it is beneficial or harmful. Therefore, even if two stars are in the same palace, they may differ greatly, and one must discern the losses and gains at the boundaries.
The palace enclosures have both biased and central ones, and they should be determined based on the zodiac animals of each palace: among the territories and stars governed by each palace, those that match the zodiac animal of the palace are considered central enclosures. For example, the palace of Chen is associated with the dragon and has 'Kang Jin Long' (the Dragon of the Celestial Pole), and the palace of Zi is associated with the rat and has 'Xu Ri Shi' (the Rat of the Void Star). All twelve palaces are judged in this way. Those that do not match the zodiac animal of the palace are considered biased enclosures. For example, the palace of Chen has 'Jiao Mu Jiao' (the Serpent of the Angle) and the palace of Zi has 'Wei Yue Yan' (the Swallow of the Waning Moon). The rest are judged similarly.
The stars follow the calendar in their movement, each remaining in their own mansions, all relying on the prevailing energy of the time. As for their rise and fall, one must distinguish the transformation and depth of the mansions, and also clarify the boundaries, always taking the position where the sun stops as the standard. Mansions have varying depths: for example, the Tail Mansion enters the寅 (Yin) palace at three degrees, which is a shallow degree; while at seventeen degrees, it enters the寅 palace, which is a deep degree. Another example is the Stomach Mansion: at three degrees, it is still in the戌 (Xu) palace, but at four degrees, it has already entered the酉 (You) palace, which is the boundary, and both are shallow degrees. Carefully examining the degrees of the mansions and deeply investigating the origin of destiny: one should carefully observe the degrees, determining which stars are auspicious, which are inauspicious, which are strong, and which are weakened. Investigating the origin of destiny involves seeing whether the degree ruler can achieve success, whether the pattern is real or empty, and then examining the gains and losses in the life span. Even if they are in the same palace, one must distinguish whether they are at the boundary, and also observe the four cardinal positions.
When the four cardinal positions are empty and lack stars, one should consider the native ruler of the native's palace; if there are already stars in the native's palace degree, there is no need to look for them in the added chart. Stars may be in the same palace or separated by the boundary, but the four cardinal positions are always the priority. If the four cardinal positions have no stars, then look at the native's palace, and determine based on the ruler of the palace. If there are already stars in the native's degree, there is no need to look further in the added chart; only if there are truly no stars should one search outside the chart. If the native's palace is in the central position of the palace, then consult the palace deity; if it is at the boundary, then consider the ruler of the degree: whenever discussing the position of the native's palace, it is divided into two aspects: the ruler of the palace and the ruler of the degree. For example, if the native is in the Si palace, the Si palace belongs to water, and the degree it occupies, the ChChariot mansion, also belongs to water, so both the palace ruler and the degree ruler are water. But if it is in the Yi host, the palace belongs to water while the degree belongs to fire, resulting in two different rulers. If there is no degree ruler, then only the palace ruler is considered. Therefore, if the native's palace is in the central position and the degree it occupies is deep, it is based on the palace ruler; if the degree is shallow, then it is based on the degree ruler.
The ruler of the palace and the ruler of the degree should be bright and strong, and the difficult stars should be pleased when they are subdued: the rulers of the palace and degree must both be in season and strong, clear and not mixed, which is auspicious; as for difficult stars and killing stars, it is best if they fall in Kongwang or weak positions, or if they restrain each other, so that they are subdued and cause no harm. To know the length of one's life qi, one must first examine the strength of one's root: to investigate the origin of one's birth star, one should see whether the star used is in season or against the season. A person with a strong body and a firm foundation does not need to fearInauspicious Sha: if the body palace and life palace are strong and in season, then one is not too afraid ofInauspicious Sha and difficult stars.
When the slave star and the killing star are strong and flourishing while the main body is weak and declining, the master of the limit is unlikely to be successful: if the slave star and the killing star are in command and powerful, but the main body and the life star are weak and out of season, then even if the limit master is prosperous and strong, it will be of no help. If there are凶 stars that meet and send off at the boundary of two limits, the body will certainly suffer a fatal end: when the limit enters the area of the boundary, and is attacked by凶 stars, it will certainly be dangerous. If there are auspicious stars present at the destination of the limit, longevity is assured: the path traveled is clear and orderly, and it is pleasing that there is no obstruction or attack by killing stars, but rather auspicious stars that welcome, thus allowing for a long and peaceful life.
The sun illuminating a difficult position can dispel all evils: The sun represents a noble ruler. When it appears in a place of misfortune, all evils naturally disperse, and the harmful stars can no longer cause harm. If evil forces are located in the palace of the current limit, one should know this is not a blessing: When numerous evils gather in the palace of the current limit, and they do not meet kongwang or are not restrained, the resulting calamity will be extremely severe.
The text says, "The Sun as a difficult star, when eclipsed, brings no great misfortune; comets and strange stars, when encountering the metal star Geng, turn into auspicious stars for official positions": "The Sun" if it functions as a harmful star that injures the native in the chart, is usually considered inauspicious, but if it coincides with an eclipse when the sun's light is obscured, its harmful nature cannot manifest, and thus there is no great harm. "The Moon孛" refers to comets, which are inherently fierce and harmful, but when they meet the position of the metal star Geng, they instead become stars that promote official success. If the native's main star or the star of official position meets this, officials may be promoted and receive additional benefits, while common people may also gain fortune. The commentary then elaborates: harmful stars should not form alliances, and the main stars of the palace should not deviate from their proper positions. If harmful stars are in a flourishing and strong position and are exactly at the great limit, and if the harmful stars in the current year are also strong, the resulting misfortune will be great; but if the harmful stars are restrained, or fall into empty or weak positions, the resulting misfortune will be less. Whenever a star that controls the limit ruler appears, it is the day when misfortune is triggered. For example, if the limit ruler is of the wood element, the metal star that harms it is feared; other stars are similarly considered in this way.
The text says: One must be most cautious of the flow year's Tai Sui pressing directly, and also beware of the four remaining stars gaining power and acting strongly — these four remaining stars are called "Purple Qi", "Moon孛", "Ruo Hou", and "Ji Du", which are subordinate to the seven governing stars, hence called "remaining slaves". The annotation explains: If the Tai Sui conflicts with the current limit, or if the four remaining stars invade the destiny degree, it indicates danger and hardship, family dispersion, and loss of wealth. What is called "Yellow Spring Road" and "Ghost Gate" are not just dangerous places? The four palaces of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are called "Yellow Spring Road", and the four palaces of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are called "Ghost Gate". If one's true destiny or current limit falls into these palaces, and if many killing stars gather there, disaster is certain. The beginning of "Jie Sha" and the end of "Yang Ren" are also battlefields of weapons. When the current limit enters the boundary between the beginning of Jie Sha and the end of Yang Ren, if it just reaches there, one must also be cautious of calamity.
The text says: When many stars gather to attack theInauspicious Sha (kill star), there is no need to worry; but when a singleInauspicious Sha star alone guards the gate, it is most concerning. The commentary explains: When many stars gather at the position of theInauspicious Sha star, they fight and restrain it, working together to suppress its harmful nature, so there is no need to worry about being harmed. For example, a木 (wood)Inauspicious Sha star encountering a金 (metal) star to subdue it. Conversely, if a singleInauspicious Sha star alone takes charge of the destiny and is in a strong position, with no stars to support it, then the difficulties are unavoidable. At this time, if four auxiliary stars come forward to resist theInauspicious Sha star, the main star of the destiny can remain safe and worry-free. For example, if the destiny is placed in the亥 (Hai) palace, and the紫气 (Purple Qi) star and the troublesome金 (metal) star are in the same palace, this is the four auxiliary stars defending the main star against theInauspicious Sha; or if they come from the triple harmony direction to jointly resist it, the main star of the destiny will also have no worries.
The text further states: one must also examine whether the current year's Tai Sui (sovereign star) is chasing the凶杀 (malevolent killing star) and coming to meet it, and must carefully assess the good or evil of the current year and the current limit. The commentary explains: when the Tai Sui follows the killing star to fill the destiny palace, and combines with the limit, it often indicates a 'reversed limit', meaning the current limit turns back, and calamities suddenly occur. One should distinguish between light and heavy to make a judgment. All these are refined discussions by those who study stars, truly deserving to be called an extraordinary book among diviners: rise and fall, success and failure, gain and loss, and achievements and setbacks all cannot escape its scope. The path of the current limit, the measure of gain and loss, and the distinction of good and bad fortune, when combined with the current year's circumstances, should be integrated and taken in the middle way to make a decision. All of this can be summarized into one sentence as a principle.
Zhang Guo's School of Astral Destiny, third volume
The Five Stars Ode and the Assignment of Celestial Positions Ode
The text begins by saying: the clear and turbid energies first divided and each took its place—the clear and light rose to become Heaven, while the turbid and heavy sank to become Earth; high and low were thus clearly defined—the upper is called high, the lower is called low. Heaven does not withhold the great way, so the Luo Writing emerged, said to have appeared during the time of King Wen of Zhou, when a divine turtle carried the writing on its back from the Luo River; Earth does not withhold treasures, so the Yellow River Chart appeared, said to have emerged during the time of Fuxi, when a dragon horse carried the diagram on its back from the Yellow River. The stars are distributed across twelve directions, circling around the four and seven constellations—the twelve directions are the twelve palaces, and the four times seven constellations are the twenty-eight constellations.
This is entirely dependent on the two major luminaries, the "Sun" and the "Moon," rising from the east and proceeding in order of longitude, like ants circling around a grinding wheel. All the stars revolve around the North Pole without ceasing. The commentary says: celestial bodies rotate to the left, but the sun, moon, and stars move to the right. When the stars move in their proper order along their paths, auspicious winds become smooth and harmonious energy arrives; when the stars moveretrograde (retrograde) and lose their proper course, malevolent energies are summoned and calamities occur. The great aspect relates to the country, the relationship between sovereign and minister, and the rise and fall of order and chaos. In the subtle aspect, it also concerns the prosperity or decline of a region and the people living there. Therefore, when a country is about to flourish, there must first be auspicious signs; when a country is about to decline, there must first be ominous portents.
All things covered by heaven and carried by earth—heaven above covering, earth below bearing—are places where stars shine and the seven luminaries move. Stars shine like candles upon the human world, and the luminaries are arranged in order along the meridians and parallels. There has never been a blessing that comes without a cause, nor a calamity that occurs without a name: all good and bad fortune, auspicious and ominous events, originate from the stars in the heavens. Now, the planet known as 'Saturn' or the Fixed Star, when it is located in the regions of Qi and Wu, even if a person is born at night, his fortune will be especially prosperous—Qi and Wu correspond to the Zi and Chou mansions, which are the native mansions of Earth. The planet known as 'Mars' or the Wanderer, when it is located in the regions of Song and Lu, even if a person is born during the day, his official rank and wealth will naturally be abundant—Song and Lu correspond to the Mao and Xu mansions, which are the native mansions of Fire. The planet known as 'Jupiter' or the Year Star, when it is located in the mansions of Yin and Hai, is truly in its native domain, and it brings a hundredfold increase in vitality. The planet known as 'Water Star' or the Morning Star, when it moves to the mansions of Si and Shen, is truly in its native domain, and the atmosphere is renewed—water's native mansions are precisely Si and Shen.

The sun is the sovereign among all celestial bodies and leads the way, moving to the Leo mansion, illuminating all things without partiality — the commentary says the sun resides in the午 (Wu) mansion, and Leo corresponds to午. The moon is the follower among all celestial bodies and comes after the sun, retreating to the Cancer mansion, guarding its own position without overflowing — the commentary says the moon resides in the未 (Wei) mansion, and Cancer corresponds to未. Why does it obtain a continuous flow of blessings like a spring's source? Because the planet Venus, also known as Tai Bai, moves along the辰 (Chen) and酉 (You) mansions — the native mansion of metal is precisely at辰 and酉. Why does knowledge become as vast as the mountains and seas? It is because the planet Ji Du enters the regions of Jing and Bin — the commentary says Ji Du resides in巳 (Si) and亥 (Hai). Achieving fame by entering the雁塔 (Yan Ta, a metaphor for the imperial examination hall) and having one's name known throughout the realm is due to the planet Luo Hou, also called Tian Shou, residing in the午 (Wu) mansion. Stepping onto the Moon Palace and corresponding to the region of Lu is due to the sun being in the戌 (Xu) mansion, which belongs to theBond mansion (Lou Xu, Bond mansion), precisely the region of Lu.
The planet Water and the Sun congregate in the Star and Extended Net mansions, enabling the person to stand in the court and assist the sovereign in rectifying errors and promoting virtue—since Star and Extended Net belong to the午 (horse) palace, the commentary notes that Water appears on the day of午. The planet Moon孛 and the planet罗睺 gather in the Winnowing Basket and Tail mansions, allowing the person to bring relief to millions of people like timely rain—since Winnowing Basket and Tail belong to the寅 (tiger) palace, the commentary notes that孛 and罗睺 appear on the day of寅. The planets Gold and Water converge in the snake's nest, which is not only longevity with white hair but also more—since Gold and Water meet in the巳 (snake) palace. The planets Fire and Earth gather in the Ox palace, which is not only the longevity of turtles and cranes but also more—since Fire and Earth meet in the丑 (ox) palace. Inviting many unexpected misfortunes is when the planet Fire and罗睺 invade the person's palace and destiny palace—Fire and罗睺 are the Vermilion Bird stars, governing fire and blood-related calamities. Widespread and unusual auspicious signs occur when the planets Gold and Wood shine upon the native's native star—Gold and Wood are the Dragon and Tiger stars, governing benevolence and decisiveness. When the four cardinal positions are empty and lack stars, and the person's destiny is seated there, the person will be all his life dull and ignorant.
The concept of "four emptiness" refers to the absence of any stars in the triple harmony and opposite palace positions. If a person has a beneficial star accompanying their birth palace, they will achieve success and progress early in life—this is because one star serves multiple functions and receives support from the triple harmony. When the "water star" reaches the Chen position, the person is resourceful and skilled in various strategies—note that the water star is located in the巳 position. When the "moon孛" star is in the Zi position, the person is adept at cunning and change—note that the孛 star is located in the子 position. Stealing from others for personal gain is due to the conjunction of the water star and the "counting star"—the water star represents intelligence and strategy, while the counting star is associated with cunning. On the other hand, if someone is willing to donate their own money to help others, it must be because the "wood star" and the "purple qi" star are in the same palace—wood represents integrity and determination, while purple qi represents kindness and generosity.

Why is there constant need to seek medical treatment? Because the planet Mars is in the Eighth House, which is the House of Diseases and Illness — Mars signifies blood-related calamities. Why are there frequent lawsuits and disputes? Because the planet Rahu is in the Tenth House, which is the House of Official Positions — Rahu is impetuous and prone to quarrels. Being constantly troubled and obstructed is due to Mars' fear of meeting with the planet Water — because of the conflict between fire and water. A lifetime of prosperity and wealth is due to the planet of Fortune and Virtue preferring to be in the same house as the planet of Official Favor — because of the conjunction of fortune and official favor. The brow is often furrowed and things are never sufficient, only because the planet Water has reached the region of Yangzhou — the note says that Water is in the Ox House. A relaxed and easygoing nature, and a tendency to be unconstrained, is because Mars is in the region of Yan — the note says that Mars is in the Tiger House.
In early years, one left parents behind because the Sun should not meet with "Luohou" — the Sun symbolizes the father, and it is most feared to meet Luohou which causes an eclipse. In middle age, losing wife and children is like a comet and a meteor appearing together, and one must avoid encountering "Jidu", also known as Tianwei — "Yuebo" is the star representing a concubine, and it is most inauspicious for Jidu to invade and harm it. A woman suffering from difficulties in childbirth is due to dark stars harming her body palace — because the ruler of the body is afflicted by the killing star. A man encountering sudden misfortune is due to a forbidden star harming his life palace — because there is a forbidden star above his life origin that comes to invade.
The planet Venus shining over the territory of Wei indicates longevity — the commentary says that Venus is in the亥 (Hai) palace, and亥 (Hai) is the territory of Wei; but once it meets the planet Mars, it will shorten one's lifespan — because Mars necessarily overcomes metal. The planet Mars arriving at the territory of Song brings honor and prominence — the commentary says that Mars is in the卯 (Mao) position, and卯 (Mao) is the territory of Song; but when it meets the planet Taiyi, which is also called the Moon孛 (Bo), it will soon return to the Yellow Spring — because the Moon孛 (Bo) necessarily overcomes fire. A person whose official star is hidden and weak will not wear the official robe until old age — this is because the official star is overcome by the ruler star. A person whose Kui star is full and bright will have purple sashes before his hair turns white — this is because the Kui star is in a favorable position. When the Moon孛 (Bo) is in the seventh palace, which is the position of wife and concubine, and meets the Moon, he can marry — because the Moon and the Moon孛 (Bo) are in the wife's position together. When the planet Mars is in the fifth palace, which is the position of children, and meets the planet Jupiter, the descendants will be prosperous — because fire and wood mutually generate and are in the children's palace.
The initial period of one's life is marked by a mixture of difficulties, and it is only in middle age that one begins to achieve success and prominence; this indicates that the early years were blocked while the middle years became favorable. If a凶星 (malefic star) falls in the appearance palace, one will enter a period of sorrow before the age of thirty—since the appearance palace governs the early years. If a囚曜 (captured star) falls in the illness palace, one will face death around the age of fifty—since the illness palace governs the middle years. When calculating the yearly limits, first examine the current limit, then add the influences of the flowing stars of the year. Next, assess the fortune or misfortune of the flowing stars. Determine whether the stars are moving forward or backward, and use this to judge fortune or misfortune—stars passing through certain degrees may move forward or backward. Investigate the order in which stars enter a palace, and use this to understand the fortune or misfortune—stars entering a certain palace may arrive earlier or later. All these various methods ultimately follow one principle, precise and error-free.
