In ancient times, when people could not accurately tell the time by ordinary means, they used sunlight and natural phenomena to determine the time of the寅 (Yin) hour. In January and September, the second watch (around 3:00 AM) is the寅 hour; in February and August, the third watch (around 3:30 AM) is the寅 hour; in March and July, when the sky begins to brighten, it is the寅 hour; in April and June, when the sun rises, it is the寅 hour; in May, one must wait until the sun is three zhang high; in October and December, the second watch (around 2:30 AM) is the寅 hour; in November, it is even earlier, as soon as the fourth watch begins, it is the寅 hour. Remember these lines, and you will never be mistaken about the寅 hour. Another method is to observe the cat's pupils: during the子 (Zi), 午 (Wu), 卯 (Mao), and 酉 (You) hours, the cat's pupils are narrow like a line; during the寅 (Yin), 申 (Shen), 巳 (Si), and 亥 (Hai) hours, the pupils are round like a mirror; and during the辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu), 丑 (Chou), and 未 (Wei) hours, the pupils are shaped like a date seed tip. This is a mnemonic for telling the time without using water clocks. The author warned those who know this not to spread it carelessly.
Where the seasonal divisions and their corresponding natural phenomena come from has various explanations from earlier scholars. The "Inner Affairs of the Spring and Autumn Annals" states that Fuxi established the eight seasonal divisions, using symbolic representations to correspond with natural phenomena. The "Book of Jin · Records of Laws and Calendars" says that the Yellow Emperor divided the eight seasonal divisions, serving as the beginning of agricultural activities. Yebaba's argument suggests that Fuxi drew the Eight Trigrams, with each trigram consisting of three lines, used to symbolize the twenty-four solar terms. The "Record of the Method of the Month" states that the Duke of Zhou established the four seasons and defined the twenty-four solar terms and seventy-two seasonal divisions. In summary, the concept of seasonal divisions originated with Fuxi, but was finally standardized by the Duke of Zhou. Bao Jingxiang further explains the calculation: five days constitute one seasonal division, so a month has six divisions, and six sets of five days make up thirty days; three divisions make up one solar term, so each solar term lasts fifteen days. The star divination charts require the seasonal divisions to determine the month and the position of the sun, so it is necessary to first clarify the origin and calculation method of the seasonal divisions and solar terms.

The hierarchical structure of time is: five days make a period (候), three periods make a season (气), six seasons make a season (时, which is a quarter of a year), and four seasons make a year. The principle of intercalation is as follows: The Book of Documents (尚书·尧典) states, "A year consists of three hundred and sixty-six days." Here, "a year" refers to a full year, indicating that a year actually has three hundred and sixty-six days. However, the calendar only counts three hundred and sixty days in a year, which is six days less. In a year, there are also six small months, each missing one day, which accounts for another six days. Thus, a year has a total of twelve days left over. After three years, the accumulated surplus is thirty-six days, so an intercalary month is added to correct the seasons. After adding the intercalary month, six days remain. After another two years, the accumulated surplus reaches twenty-four days, which, when added to the remaining six days from before, totals thirty days, sufficient to add another intercalary month. This is the origin of the system of intercalation every three years and again every five years.
The Twenty-Eight Mansions are divided into four groups according to the four cardinal directions, with each group containing seven mansions. Each group corresponds to an animal spirit. The seven mansions in the East are Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, and Ji, which when connected resemble a dragon, so they are associated with the Azure Dragon. The seven mansions in the North are Dou, Niu, Nu, Xu, Wei, Shi, and Bi, which resemble a turtle and snake entwined, so they are associated with the Black Tortoise. The seven mansions in the West are Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, and Can, which resemble a crouching tiger, so they are associated with the White Tiger. The seven mansions in the South are Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, Yi, and Zhen, which resemble a flying bird, so they are associated with the Vermilion Bird. In star divination, when determining a person's fate or predicting events, it is essential to first identify which mansion belongs to which direction and which animal spirit, so that it can correspond correctly with the twelve earthly branches' directions and the Five Phases.

The "Xuan Ji Yu Heng" was an ancient instrument used for observing celestial phenomena: the circular part is called "Ji," used to simulate the rotation of celestial bodies; the straight part is called "Heng," used to aim at stars. The illustration cites the "Sui Shu · Tianwen Zhi" which says: the term "Ji Heng" originally referred to the Big Dipper. The four stars in front of the dipper's body are called "Xuan Ji," and the three stars behind the dipper's handle are called "Yu Heng." It also cites the "Zhen Yi" which says: "Ji" is a circular ring with a diameter of eight chi and a circumference of twenty-five chi, decorated with fine jade, mounted so that it can rotate; "Heng" is a horizontal tube, eight chi long, with a one-inch diameter, also decorated with jade. Looking through the lower end, one can observe the movement of stars, which is called "Kui Heng." Since the Han dynasty, this instrument has been known as the "Hun Tian Yi." The star charts used by astronomers were originally measured using such instruments.

This song teaches people to determine the time when the moon appears based on the day. On the third day, the moon rises at the hour of Chen; on the fifth day, at Si; on the eighth day, at Wu; on the tenth day, at Wei; on the thirteenth day, at Shen; on the fifteenth day, at You; on the eighteenth day, at Xu; on the twentieth day, at Hai. On the twenty-third day, it appears at Zi; on the twenty-sixth day, at Chou; on the twenty-eighth day, at Yin; and on the thirtieth day, at Mao. Each month starts from Mao and proceeds by adding the hours. On yin days, subtract two hours; on yang days, add three hours. Proceeding in this way, when the mountain tea flower is in full bloom and the moon's shadow tilts westward and sets, using this method accurately determines the time of the moon's rising and setting. The star school must distinguish between the moon's rising after the new moon and its rising after the full moon, so it is essential first to learn how to calculate the moon's rising and setting.
The diagram explains the principles of new moon, full moon, first quarter, and last quarter. The sun belongs to yang, and the moon belongs to yin. Yin's light is always diminished by yang. Starting from the beginning of the month, the moon moves to the right, gradually moving away from the sun. The illuminated side turns more towards the earth, and light increases day by day. By the seventh and eighth days of the month, only half of the moon is visible, shaped like a bow string, so it is called the first quarter. By the fifteenth day, the moon is farthest from the sun, with the entire illuminated side facing the earth, and the light is complete. The sun and moon are opposite each other, so it is called the full moon. After the full moon, the moon gradually approaches the left side of the sun, and the light decreases day by day. By the twenty-second and twenty-third days, only half of the moon is visible again, shaped like a bow string, so it is called the last quarter. By the thirtieth day, the sun and moon are together, and the moon's light is completely hidden by the sun, so it is called the new moon.

This diagram is the general outline of the Five Phases. It categorizes various things according to wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The headings of each section in the diagram are as follows: "Star" refers to the five stars representing wood, fire, earth, metal, and water; "Trigram" refers to the Eight Trigrams; "Person" refers to the five virtues: benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness; "Organ" refers to the five internal organs: liver, heart, spleen, lung, and kidney; "Taste" refers to the five tastes: sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty; "Direction" refers to the five cardinal directions: east, south, center, west, and north; "Color" refers to the five colors: green, red, yellow, white, and black; "Climate" refers to the five climatic conditions: wind, heat, dampness, dryness, and cold; "Season" refers to the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter; "Spirit" refers to the six spirits: Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, Gou Chen, Teng She, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise; "Number" refers to the numbers associated with each of the Five Phases; "Sound" refers to the five tones: Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu. When interpreting the chart, the nature, diseases, directions, and colors associated with the star influences are all derived from this reference table.

The diagram explains the allocation of the twelve palaces to the four seasons. The sun and moon are situated between heaven and earth, and their energy originates from the north, so the sun's original palace is determined to be Wu, and the moon's original palace is determined to be Wei. The remaining palaces Zi and Chou are assigned to earth. The heavenly path moves from left to right, starting from the Yin palace: Yin corresponds to spring and belongs to wood, Mao corresponds to summer and belongs to fire, Chen corresponds to autumn and belongs to metal, and Si corresponds to winter and belongs to water. The earthly path moves from right to left, starting from the Hai palace: Hai corresponds to spring and belongs to wood, Xu corresponds to summer and belongs to fire, You corresponds to autumn and belongs to metal, and Shen corresponds to winter and belongs to water. In the reversal and the order, each has its own sequence. The two lines run simultaneously between heaven and earth, which is called "Earlier Heaven's essence"—the fundamental nature of the five phases of the twelve palaces is derived from this.

The explanation of the Over Palace Diagram states that the entire celestial circle consists of 365 and 1/4 degrees, which is distributed among the twelve palaces. The degrees each palace covers, as well as the exact minutes and seconds when they change, are marked on the diagram. The conversion is done as follows: 100 seconds make a minute, and 100 minutes make a degree. The explanation of the Biased and Correct Enclosures Diagram states that "correct enclosure" refers to the palace positions, while "biased enclosure" refers to the mansion degrees. Whether setting the命宫 (life palace) or calculating the progress limits, this system is followed. For example, if the命度 (life degree) falls in the mansion of Xū (Emptiness), since Xū belongs to the Sun, the degree ruler is the Sun; and since Xū is in the Zi (Rat) mansion, which belongs to Earth, the palace ruler is the Earth star. Similarly, if the progress limit reaches Xū, the Sun is the ruler of the degree, and the Earth star is the ruler of the palace. These two stars are both my useful gods; how can I choose only one and ignore the other?

These six figures represent the six states of celestial stars being in a favorable or unfavorable position. Their usage is exactly the same, differing only in their auspicious or inauspicious nature. Any star that is "in its native mansion" means the star is in its own palace. If it governs important positions such as the native palace, destiny palace, official position, fortune virtue, property, wife, and children, it is considered qualified. Any star that is "ascending the hall" means the star is in the palace corresponding to its own constellation. If it governs the aforementioned important positions, it is also considered qualified. Any star in a "temple and prosperity" position, governing the aforementioned important positions, is also considered qualified. Any star in its "favorite palace," when used as the useful god, is also considered qualified. Any star forming a "noble pattern," governing the aforementioned important positions, is still considered qualified. However, if a star forms a "lowly pattern" and governs the important positions such as native palace, destiny palace, official position, fortune virtue, property, wife, and children, it becomes a forbidden pattern, indicating a life of low status, which is the opposite of the first five figures.
Zhang Guo's School of Astral Destiny Two
All the stars have their own rules for rising, and the changing bright stars are considered.
The method of calculating the stars for each of the following examples is based on the heavenly stem of the birth year. First, we explain "changing stars": those born in the year of Jia start with the star of Mars, those born in the year of Yi start with the star of Moon孛, those born in the year of Bing start with the star of Wood, those born in the year of Ding start with the star of Metal, those born in the year of Wu start with the star of Earth, those born in the year of Ji start with the star of Taiyin, those born in the year of Geng start with the star of Water, those born in the year of Xin start with the star of Zi Qi, those born in the year of Ren start with the star of Ji Du, and those born in the year of Gui start with the star of Luo Hui. Then remember two lines of mnemonic verses. The first line lists ten categories:禄 (Lü), 暗 (An), 福 (Fu), 耗 (Hao), 荫 (Yin), 贵 (Gui), 刑 (Xing), 印 (Yin), 囚 (Qiu), 权 (Quan). The second line lists the ten stars in order: 火 (Huǒ, Fire),孛 (Bo), 木 (Mu, Wood), 金 (Jin, Metal), 土 (Tu, Earth), 月 (Yue, Moon), 水 (Shui, Water), 气 (Qi, Qi), 计 (Ji, Ji), 罗 (Luo, Luo). Aligning the two lines vertically forms a table of changing stars. For example, if someone born in the year of Jia wants to know which star becomes "Heavenly Wealth (天贵)", first count from "Lü" to "Gui" in the category line, which is the sixth character. Then count from "Fire" to the sixth character in the star line, which is "Moon", thus knowing that someone born in the year of Jia has Taiyin as the Heavenly Wealth. The rest of the stems can be calculated in the same way.
There are ten changing stars, each governing one palace. By identifying which star transforms into which changing star, we determine which palace that star governs. Any star that transforms into "Heavenly禄" governs the official position palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly暗" governs the appearance palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly福" governs wealth, fortune virtue, and movement; any star that transforms into "Heavenly耗" governs the siblings palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly荫" governs the spouse palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly贵" governs the children palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly刑" governs the servant palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly印" governs the property palace; any star that transforms into "Heavenly囚" governs the illness palace; and any star that transforms into "Heavenly权" governs the life palace. This is the assignment of each changing star. Since each star governs one palace and one warehouse, they are also called "warehouse governing stars."
The celestial body "Tian Lu" signifies official rank andofficial stipend. When encountered by someone in official position, it indicates receiving salary and benefits; when encountered by a common person, it signifies a life of happiness and prosperity. A mnemonic says: if the Lu is located in the birth chart's命宫, then fields, property, and wealth will be abundant, and all affairs will go smoothly. If the official star is also in the seven strong position, then one will achieve fame and reputation at a young age, with recognition even reaching the emperor's ears. When examining the Lu, one should also consider the official and禄宫 together, and there are five criteria: first, it should be in the seven strong position; second, it should illuminate the命宫; third, it prefers to move in the correct direction rather than reverse; fourth, it prefers to be in its temple and prosperous position; fifth, it should be in the growth, officialdom, or prosperity positions of the five elements of the birth year's nayin sound. If all five criteria are met, the Lu is beneficial, indicating great wealth and honor. Conversely, if it is in the five weak positions, or enters the four evil positions, and encounters留守 orretrograde in its movement, the fortune is impure, leading to a life of obstacles and many unfulfilled affairs.
"The Heaven Dark Star" is a benevolent star that has turned into a malevolent one, appearing as if it should bring good fortune but failing to do so. The rhyme says: Clearly possessing the form of wealth and honor, why is prosperity always lacking? It is because the destiny contains this hidden injurious star. It sits in a strong position like the seventh strength, yet it causes harm everywhere; however, when it falls into a pit or a lonely, isolated position, its harm is naturally less severe—this is exactly the opposite of other stars which are favorable when strong and unfavorable when weak. When analyzing the Heaven Dark Star, one must consider it together with the appearance palace. This star is most忌 (to be avoided) when it falls in the official position palace, and it is also to be avoided when it shares the same palace with official stars, the leader star, or the literary star. It is especially to be avoided when it appears in the body palace or the destiny palace. Anyone who commits these errors will have difficulty achieving success throughout their life.
The star "Heavenly Fortune" is based on virtue as its foundation. A person can truly gain fortune and longevity only if they possess moral character. A mnemonic says: if the Fortune Star is present in the body palace or the destiny palace, and it is located in a strong and flourishing position, then one will enjoy deep fortune throughout their life. However, if the Fortune Star falls into a weak or declining palace and is accompanied by malevolent stars, the original prosperity will gradually diminish, and misfortunes will be unavoidable. When interpreting the Heavenly Fortune Star, it should be considered together with the Fortune Virtue, Wealth, and Migration palaces: the best situation is when it illuminates the Fortune Virtue palace, followed by its presence in the body or destiny palace; its presence in the male and female palace is also favorable, because the male and female palace is opposite to the Fortune Virtue palace and they are connected by energy flow, making it particularly auspicious. When the Fortune Star is in a flourishing and strong palace and moves in a favorable direction, the fortune will be thick; if it is in a weak or declining palace, or if it is in a period of concealment, reversal, or stagnation, the fortune will be thin. When making a judgment, one should also consider the foundation of the body and destiny palaces to reach a conclusion.
The origin of the star "Tian Hao" is said to date back to the Tang Xuanzong era, when Tian Hao star stole Yang Guifei's jade ring and sachet. Xuanzong scolded it in a dream, and it replied, "I am Tian Hao." A rhyme says: encountering Tian Hao star is not good, for when it appears, all wealth one is born with will be lost. Even if it falls in a noble position and is accompanied by the stars of authority and official rank, it can only barely sustain itself, and one can only wait for the turning of the life cycle to find hope. When calculating Tian Hao star, one should also refer to the brother's palace. This star is a god of expenditure and loss of wealth, and brothers dividing the family usually consume a lot of money, so the brother's palace is used to match it. It is most忌 to fall in the fields and wealth palace, but falling in other palaces does not cause much harm.
The star "Tian Yin" signifies the prosperity and honor of one's parents, and the individual benefits from their influence and protection. A mnemonic says: those who encounter the Tian Yin star possess a certain ability to manage affairs, but its effectiveness depends on it being in a strong and flourishing position. If it combines with the Fu Star, Lu Star, Yin Star, Quan Star, and Tian Gui, one may attain the highest official rank and shine in the court. When determining the position of the Tian Yin star, one should consider its conjunction with the wife's palace: if it is in the Longsheng (Growth) or Diwang (Prosperity) palace, it indicates wealth gained through the wife; if it is in the Dead or Absolute palace, it suggests the wife may suffer from frequent illness. Favorable progression is auspicious, while reverse progression is inauspicious. If the star is in the Seven Strong palace, it is suitable; if in the Five Weak palace, it is unfavorable. If this star is located in the Migration palace, it indicates marrying into another family as a son-in-law; if in the Servant palace, it is not suitable for a formal marriage. If it is in the four cardinal palaces of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, it indicates having a wife and wealth. As long as no evil stars interfere, it signifies a long and harmonious marriage.
The star "Heavenly Nobleman" (天贵) is auspicious when it is embraced by good stars, but inauspicious when it is flanked by evil stars, which indicates a lower status. A rhyme says: If the person's native palace is in a strong position, and is accompanied by the seal star and authority star, and if the native palace is also in triple harmony with it, then as long as there is more noble energy and less conflicting energy, and if the Heavenly Nobleman is located in the official position palace, then the person will have a high official position and continuous promotion in rank. When calculating the Heavenly Nobleman star, it should be considered together with the male and female palace. If it is located in a strong palace, or enters its flourishing position in a forward direction, or is located in the nobleman, fortune, or post-horse position of the birth chart, it indicates the birth of a noble son. If it is located in the migration, servant, or brother palace, it indicates that the child is adopted. If it is located in a weak palace and is harmed by evil stars, it often indicates harm to children. Also, examine the male and female palace itself: if the stars in the palace are in a fallen position, it indicates no descendants; if the main star of the male and female palace is strong, there will still be children.
The star "Heavenly Punishment" governs crimes such as imprisonment, exile, theft, and incidents involving tattoos on the face or arms. A mnemonic says: if "Heavenly Punishment" is also fallen, it indicates extreme misfortune; the body宫, life宫, and property宫 should avoid encountering it. When the limit of life reaches this star, it will surely lead to physical disability, unless there are tattoos or floral patterns on the body to offset this calamity. When calculating "Heavenly Punishment," one should also consider the servant宫. If this star falls into a leisurely palace without malevolent stars, servants will be helpful; if it falls into a strong palace and is well-placed, servants will be cunning and deceitful; if凶stars are also present in the same palace, there will be unnecessary harassment and humiliation from petty people. This star is preferable to be weak rather than strong, and it is better to move forward rather than backward. However, if this star is the main star of the命, there is no problem, because one cannot punish oneself.
The star "Heavenly Seal" is pleased to meet with stars related to official rank. A rhyme says: born with the favor of imperial decree and appointment, the strength of official rank depends entirely on this star; if it also meets with stars of academic achievement and examination success, then one can enjoy salary and have a reputation throughout the court. When calculating the Heavenly Seal star, one must consider it together with the field and residence palace. It is favorable if it falls in the field and residence palace, or in the seven strong palace's place of residence, growth, and prosperity, indicating abundant land and property. If it moves in a留守 (stationary) or逆行 (retrograde) manner without vitality, and falls in a desolate and depressed place, then one cannot inherit ancestral property. However, if there are auspicious stars in the field and residence palace, one can still establish one's own estate; conversely, if there are inauspicious stars in the field and residence palace and the命宫 (destiny palace) is weak and depressed, then one definitely has no land or property.
The star "Tian Qiu" signifies imprisonment. If it appears together with the stars Lan Gan and Guan Suo, it indicates a disaster involving imprisonment. A mnemonic states that if Tian Qiu falls in the palace of the Four Punishments, it leads to diseases involving pus and blood, physical injuries, or even premature death. However, if the star Shou Xing (Longevity Star) is present, it can transform from a凶 (adverse) to a福 (favorable) star. When calculating Tian Qiu, one must consider it in conjunction with the Health and Illness Palace. This star is unfavorable when it appears in the seven strong and flourishing places (the original text has the four characters "qi qiong sen wang" which may be a mistake), or when it shines on the命宫 (life palace) or 身宫 (body palace) during a retrograde period. These situations are not suitable. However, if the star acting as a prisoner is Ziqi (Purple Qi) or the Wood Star, these two stars are inherently benevolent, so one should not automatically regard the presence of "Qiu" (imprisonment) as an adverse factor. Nevertheless, those born in the year of Wu or Gui may experience a reduction in its power, but it will not lead to major calamities.
The star Tianquan signifies authority and is responsible for matters of life and death. A mnemonic states: if Tianquan meets TianGui, and occupies a high and strong position, even if there are other凶stars like Tianxing and Tianqiu, they will not cause harm; if the palace position is harmonious and the structure is strong, then one will certainly attain a prestigious official position such as that of Ziwu Lang. When analyzing Tianquan star, it should be considered together with the native's命宫. If this star is present in the命宫 or accompanies the身宫, and is in its庙 position and moving in the correct direction, it indicates that one will receive support and assistance from noble people throughout their life. If it is further combined with the Sun, Fu Xing, and Lu Xing in the same palace, the structure becomes exceptionally unique, indicating a destiny of power.
The star "Ke Ming" is used by scholars, indicating high reputation and important status; even common people with this star are respected in their local communities. It is determined based on the heavenly stem of the year of birth: those born in the years of Jia and Yi use the wood star as their Ke Ming; those born in the years of Bing and Ding use the fire star; those born in the years of Geng and Xin use the metal star; those born in the years of Wu and Ji use the earth star; and those born in the years of Ren and Gui use the water star. This is called the "Ten Heavenly Stems Ke Ming Stars." After determining the star, one must also consider its position: if it is in a strong palace, moving in the correct direction, and located in a flourishing position, then the person's status will be high; if it is in a weak palace and occurs during a period of stagnation or retrograde movement, then even if one passes the imperial examination, the rank will certainly be low.
The star "Kejia" signifies success in the imperial examinations. It must be in a strong and favorable position to achieve success. A rhyme says: The Kejia star is taken from the opposite palace of the命宫 (life palace). The ruler star of that opposite palace must be strong and prosperous. If it is in a favorable and powerful position, the person will rank high in the examination; if it is in a weak and unfavorable position, even passing the examination will be difficult. The method is as follows: Suppose the命宫 is in the寅 palace, then the opposite palace is the申 palace, which belongs to the water element. Therefore, the water star is taken as the Kejia star. Once determined, it must be in a strong palace, move in a favorable direction, and be in a favorable position to achieve a high rank. If it is in a weak or unfavorable position, and moves backward, stays in place, or is hidden, then even if the person becomes prominent, their rank in the examination will certainly be low.
"The Wen Star" discusses the balance between literary talent and the body's strength. When the Wen Star is strong and the body's ruler is weak, it is like Confucius, who was learned but never appointed to official positions. When the body's ruler is strong and the Wen Star is weak, it is like Lian Po, who abandoned literary pursuits for military service. When the Wen Star and the body's ruler are evenly matched, one is destined for high status and prominence. The selection is based on the heavenly stem of the year: for Jia years, take Luo Hou; for Yi years, take Ji Du; for Bing and Wu years, take the Golden Star; for Ding years, take the Fire Star; for Ji years, take Zi Qi; for Geng years, take the Wood Star; for Xin years, take the Earth Star; for Ren years, take the Sun Star; and for Gui years, take the Moon Star, all indicating literary fame. Thus, this combination is to balance the Five Phases and generate literary brilliance: Jia with Luo Hou brings clarity and brightness, Yi with Ji Du and Ji with Zi Qi bring orderly coherence, Bing with the Golden Star is like melting gold to cast vessels, Ding with the Fire Star radiates brilliance, Wu with the Golden Star and Xin with the Earth Star naturally produce refined elegance, Ren with the Sun Star and Gui with the Moon Star radiate splendor, and Geng with the Wood Star is like a carpenter shaping objects with axes and chisels. The Water Star and Yue Bo are not used as Wen Stars, because these two celestial bodies are flowing and lack fixed form.
The "Kui Star" is associated with taking the top position or leading rank. It is determined based on the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia take Taiyin, those born in the year of Yi take Taiyang (the text here is missing an "Yi"), those born in the year of Bing take Luohou, those born in the year of Ding take Jidu, those born in the year of Wu take the Mars star, those born in the year of Ji take the Venus star, those born in the year of Geng take the Jupiter star, those born in the year of Xin take the Yuebo star, those born in the year of Ren take the Zi Qi star, and those born in the year of Gui take the Water star; these are called the Kui Guang stars. This pairing is based on the concept of mutual generation between yin and yang energies, which combine to form the image of the leading rank. Among the eleven luminaries, the Earth star is uniquely excluded as the Kui Star, because the Earth's nature is dull and heavy, lacking the sharpness and prominence needed to achieve the leading position.
"The official star" is a star that assists the sovereign, and the sovereign relies on it to entrust government affairs. It is determined based on the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia use Zi Qi as their official star, those born in the year of Yi use the water star, those born in the year of Bing use Luo Hou, those born in the year of Ding use Ji Du, those born in the year of Wu use Yue Bo, those born in the year of Ji use the fire star, those born in the year of Geng use the metal star, those born in the year of Xin use the wood star, those born in the year of Ren use Tai Yin, and those born in the year of Gui use the earth star, all of which relate to official positions and fame. The method of determining it is actually the "official star's禄 star" of the ten heavenly stems. The book "Qin Tang" refers to this as "opposite禄." For example, Jia uses Xin metal as its official star, and the禄 star of Xin metal is Zi Qi, so those born in the year of Jia use Zi Qi as their official star. All ten heavenly stems are determined in this way. The sun is excluded because the sun represents the sovereign, and official positions are granted by the sovereign, not by the sovereign granting himself an official position.
The "Imprint Star" is like the imperial seal, held by the sovereign, used to gain the trust of the people; it is not given to anyone who is not suitable. To determine the Imprint Star according to the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia use the Wood Star as their Imprint, those born in the year of Yi use the Sun Star, those born in the year of Bing use the Fire Star (Flame Star), those born in the year of Ding use the Moon Star, those born in the year of Wu use the Earth Star, those born in the year of Ji use the Rahu Star, those born in the year of Geng use the Metal Star, those born in the year of Xin use the Ketu Star, those born in the year of Ren use the Water Star, and those born in the year of Gui use the Moon孛 Star. This matching is based on the principle of mutual generation and compatibility among the Five Phases: the five yang stems directly take their own element stars, Jia takes Wood, Bing takes Fire, Wu takes Earth, Geng takes Metal, and Ren takes Water; the five yin stems instead take the Sun, Moon, Rahu, Ketu, and Moon孛 stars, also following the principle of mutual generation and similarity. Among the eleven celestial bodies, the Purple Qi is not included, because Purple Qi is gentle and kind, unlike Rahu, Ketu, and Moon孛, which carry a sharp and commanding nature.
The star "Cui Guan" signifies promotion and appointment in officialdom. Those who hold office rely on it for recommendation and advancement. It is determined by the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia use the planet Jin Xing (Metal Star) as Cui Guan, those born in the year of Yi use Shui Xing (Water Star), those born in the year of Bing use Tai Yang (Sun Star), those born in the year of Ding use Luo Hou (Luo Hou Star), those born in the year of Wu use Mu Xing (Wood Star), those born in the year of Ji use Zi Qi (Purple Qi Star), those born in the year of Geng use Yue Bo (Moon孛 Star), those born in the year of Xin use Tu Xing (Earth Star), those born in the year of Ren use Tai Yin (Tai Yin Star), and those born in the year of Gui use Ji Du (Ji Du Star). The Cui Guan star governs promotion, transfer of posts, and advancement in rank. Its relationship with the禄 (L禄, which refers to the official's position or fortune) is such that it is through overcoming (克) that it promotes the禄. The禄 will only move if it is overcome. For example, those born in the year of Jia have the planet Huo Xing (Fire Star) as their禄, and since fire fears metal, the presence of Jin Xing (Metal Star) is considered Cui Guan. Those born in the year of Yi have Yue Bo as their禄, and since Yue Bo belongs to water and fears earth, the presence of Shui Xing (Water Star) is considered Cui Guan. Those born in the year of Bing have Mu Xing as their禄, and the presence of Tai Yang is considered Cui Guan. Those born in the year of Ding have Jin Xing as their禄, and since Jin fears fire, the presence of Luo Hou is considered Cui Guan. Among the eleven celestial bodies, only Huo Xing (Fire Star) does not serve as Cui Guan, because the position of fire is already occupied by Tai Yang (Sun Star).
The star known as the Lu Spirit governs one's lifetime salary. It is determined based on the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia take the star of Wood and the star of Yuebo; those born in the year of Yi take the star of Water; those born in the year of Bing take the star of Jidu; those born in the year of Ding take the star of Luohou; those born in the year of Wu take the star of Earth; those born in the year of Ji take the star of Fire; those born in the year of Geng take the star of Metal; those born in the year of Xin take the star of Zi Qi; those born in the year of Ren take the star of Taiyang; and those born in the year of Gui take the star of Taiyin. The Lu Spirit mentioned here refers to the "proper Lu Spirit." When it appears in a person's chart, it indicates receiving official salary. The eleven stars are distributed according to each of the ten heavenly stems, with the exception of Jia, which is assigned two stars, Wood and Yuebo, because Jia is the first and most honored of the ten heavenly stems, thus receiving an additional star.
The star "Xishi" (Joy Star) governs matters such as marriage and weddings, gaining wealth, and experiencing joy. To determine which star is used, refer to the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the year of Jia (甲) use Luo Hou, those born in the year of Yi (乙) use Ji Du, those born in the year of Bing (丙) use Zi Qi, those born in the year of Ding (丁) use Shui Xing, those born in the year of Wu (戊) use Tai Yin, those born in the year of Ji (己) use Tu Xing, those born in the year of Geng (庚) use Jin Xing, those born in the year of Xin (辛) use Mu Xing, those born in the year of Ren (壬) use Yue Bo, and those born in the year of Gui (癸) use Huo Xing. The arrangement of the Joy Star is exactly opposite to that of the Lu Spirit. In a person's chart, the moon moves in a retrograde direction, so the Joy Star also follows this retrograde movement. The ten celestial bodies are arranged in a forward direction for the Lu Spirit, but the Joy Star follows the moon's retrograde path. Therefore, the order of the Lu Spirit is Fire, Yue Bo, Wood, Metal, Earth, Moon, Water, Qi, Ji Du, and Luo Hou, while the order of the Joy Star is exactly reversed: Luo Hou, Ji Du, Qi, Water, Moon, Earth, Metal, Wood, Yue Bo, and Fire. Remembering this forward and backward sequence ensures that both charts are arranged correctly.
The "Jue Star" signifies promotion and advancement in rank, and appointments by the court. It is determined by the earthly branch rather than the heavenly stem of the birth year: those born in the Year of the Rat (Zi) or Monkey (Shen) have the Earth Star as their Jue Star, those born in the Year of the Pig (Hai) or Sheep (Wei) have the Fire Star, those born in the Year of the Horse (Wu) or Ox (Chou) have the Water Star, those born in the Year of the Rabbit (Mao) have the Purple Qi, those born in the Year of the Tiger (Yin) or Snake (Si) have the Wood Star, those born in the Year of the Rooster (You) or Dog (Xu) have the Metal Star, and those born in the Year of the Dragon (Chen) have the Moon孛. This star is called "Di Yuan Jue," derived from the earthly branch of the birth year. When this star appears in a person's chart, it indicates promotion and official appointment. Most importantly, it should appear in the official position, fortune virtue, body palace, or life palace, and it is preferable if it is located in a strong position such as the seventh strength, so that its power is sufficient.
The stars "Heavenly Horse" and "Post-horse" indicate matters related to promotion, transfer, and traveling along official routes. The song诀 determines them based on the triple harmony formation of the year's branch. For those born in the years of Shen-Zi-Chen (Water triad), the Heavenly Horse is the fire star and the Post-horse is the wood star; for those born in the years of Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad), the Heavenly Horse is the water star and the Post-horse is the metal star; for those born in the years of Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad), the Heavenly Horse is the fire star and the Post-horse is the wood star; for those born in the years of Si-You-Chou (Metal triad), the Heavenly Horse is the water star and the Post-horse is Ji Du. The method involves first finding the position of the Post-horse, then using the method of concealment to determine the禄干 of that position. The element of this heavenly stem is the Post-horse, and the star transformed by this heavenly stem is the Heavenly Horse. For example, those born in the years of Shen-Zi-Chen, if the Post-horse is in寅, the禄干 of寅 is Jia, which belongs to wood, so the wood star is the Post-horse; Jia transforms into fire, so the fire star is the Heavenly Horse. Similarly, for those born in the years of Yin-Wu-Xu, if the Post-horse is in申, the禄干 of申 is Geng, which belongs to metal, so the metal star is the Post-horse; Geng transforms into water, so the water star is the Heavenly Horse. The rest follows the same pattern. Additionally, the school of Guo Lao also has Heavenly Horse and Post-horse, but their method differs; they use the Five Tiger遁 to find the official禄宫 to determine them. Both methods are presented here, but the method of Guo Lao is considered most essential.
"The卦气" is the remaining portion of the heavenly energy beyond the heavenly mandate, and when it appears in the person's body palace or life palace, as long as it is not disturbed by miscellaneous stars, it indicates a life filled with blessings and official rank. It is associated with the eight trigrams according to the heavenly stem of the birth year: the years of Ren and Jia are associated with the Qian trigram, the years of Yi and Gui with the Kun trigram, the year of Wu with the Kan trigram, the year of Bing with the Gen trigram, the year of Geng with the Zhen trigram, the year of Xin with the Xun trigram, the year of Ji with the Li trigram, and the year of Ding with the Dui trigram. This defines the eight palaces of the卦气. The method uses the heavenly stem of the birth year as the main reference: for example, a person born in the year of Ren, since the Qian trigram is located in the戌 and亥 palaces, one starts from the亥 palace with the year of Ren, and this position is the卦气 position. Similarly, a person born in the year of Jia, who also belongs to the Qian trigram, starts from the亥 palace, making the亥 palace his卦气 palace. The other stems are calculated in the same way.
"The term 'Heavenly Origin Wealth' (天元禄) refers to 'full use' (满用), which means a star assumes three roles simultaneously, thereby doubling its power. A mnemonic states: among the ten luminaries, the Heavenly Origin Wealth comes from the transformed wealth (化禄). Using the Five Tiger遁 method, count forward from the year's heavenly stem to the destiny palace (命宫), and determine which heavenly stem is present there. The luminary transformed by this stem is the Heavenly Origin Wealth. This star is best when it forms a full use and is located within its own domain. The specific method is: start from the year's heavenly stem using the Five Tiger遁 method, count forward to the destiny palace, and determine which heavenly stem is present there. Take the luminary transformed by this stem. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) with the destiny palace in the寅 (Yin) palace, both the year of Jia and the year of Ji (己) start with Bingyin (丙寅) in the Five Tiger遁 method. If the destiny palace is in the寅 (Yin) palace, it is exactly the Bingyin palace. The Bing stem transforms into wealth, which is wood, so the wood star is his Heavenly Origin Wealth. The rest can be deduced in the same way. The 'transformed wealth' (化禄) mentioned here refers to the system described in the previous section on transformed luminaries, such as Jia transforming into fire, Yi transforming into孛 (Bo), and Bing transforming into wood."
The method of determining "地元禄" (earthly origin of fortune) involves counting backward from the position of the hexagram's energy to the position of the命宫 (life palace), identifying which heavenly stem is encountered, and then taking the five elements associated with that stem. A mnemonic states: To find the earth's origin of fortune, first determine the hexagram's position, then count backward from there to the life palace, and the heavenly stem encountered is the one used. If there is also a favorable star accompanying it, forming a complete and harmonious configuration, this person is certain to ascend to the golden hall, walk on the jade steps, and hold a position in the court. The specific method is: starting from the hexagram associated with the heavenly stem of the birth year, count backward to the life palace position, and determine which heavenly stem is encountered. Take the five elements of that stem. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) has their life palace in the寅 (Yin) position. Jia belongs to the Qian hexagram, so start from the亥 (Hai) position with Jia and count backward to the寅 position, arriving at the stem Gui (癸). Gui belongs to water, so water is his earth origin of fortune. The rest are calculated in the same way.
The method of determining "person's original fortune" (人元禄) involves using the Five Tiger遁 (Wu Hu Dun) to count forward to the official fortune palace, identifying which heavenly stem is there, and then selecting the element that can overcome that stem. A mnemonic says: to determine the person's original fortune, use the Five Tiger遁 to count forward to the official fortune palace; the star that can overcome the heavenly stem obtained is the true person's original fortune. If there are irrelevant spirits mixed in between, they should be considered carefully and distinguished. The specific method is: start with the heavenly stem of the year, use the Five Tiger遁 to count forward to the official fortune palace, identify which heavenly stem is there, and select the element that overcomes that heavenly stem as the person's original fortune. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) with the destiny palace in the寅 (Yin) position, uses the Five Tiger遁 starting from Bingyin (丙寅), starting from寅 and counting forward, arriving at the official fortune palace in巳 (Si) to get the heavenly stem Ji (己); Ji belongs to earth, and wood can overcome earth, so wood is taken as the person's original fortune. The rest can be inferred similarly. The combination of heavenly origin, earthly origin, and person's original fortune, known as the three origins, is what the Star School refers to as the "three yuan" (三元).
The stars "Heavenly Meridian" and "Earthly Meridian" are based on the stars themselves, regardless of their positions in the palace. Using the Five Tiger Method, count in order to the person's命宫 (life palace). The heavenly stem of the命宫 determines the Heavenly Meridian, and the earthly branch of the命宫 determines the Earthly Meridian. A mnemonic says: among the stars, there are two deities called Heavenly Meridian and Earthly Meridian. Using the Five Tiger Method, count sequentially to the命宫 to find them. The earthly branch's Five Phases is called the Earthly Meridian, and the heavenly stem's Five Phases is called the Heavenly Meridian. If the person's身宫 (body palace) and命宫 are supported and flanked by these two stars, it indicates that the person has great ability to govern the heavens and earth. However, if these stars are attacked and broken by the斗标 (a star indicating conflict), then the person's fame and fortune in life will be as light as dust. The specific method is: start with the heavenly stem of the year and use the Five Tiger Method to count sequentially to the命宫, to determine what heavenly stem and earthly branch it is. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) with the命宫 in寅 (Bingyin), in the year of Jia or Ji, the Five Tiger Method starts from Bingyin. The命宫 is Bingyin, Bing belongs to fire, so the fire star is the Heavenly Meridian;寅 belongs to wood, so the wood star is the Earthly Meridian. The rest can be inferred in the same way. It is important to calculate the Five Phases of the earthly branches according to their true nature:寅 and卯 belong to wood,巳 and午 belong to fire,申 and酉 belong to metal,亥 and子 belong to water, and辰,戌,丑,未 belong to earth. Do not use the rulers of the twelve palaces to consider寅 and亥 both as wood.
This method is from the Guolao school, concerning the Heavenly Horse and Earthly Post-horse. The calculation differs from previous schools. The rhyme says: To find the Heavenly Horse, use the Five Tiger遁 (Five Tiger Hidden Method), count sequentially from the natal year's stem through the命宫 (life palace) to the official fortune palace. Look at the stem of the resulting branch and determine the Heavenly Horse based on the branch where that stem's luck falls. For the Earthly Post-horse, start from the official fortune palace and move to the Post-horse palace; the Post-horse is always among the four palaces of巳, 亥, 寅, and 申. Regardless of the palace's ruler, only consider the earthly branch. The star corresponding to that branch is the Earthly Post-horse. The specific method is: start with the natal year's stem, use the Five Tiger遁 to count sequentially to the official fortune palace, determine the stem and branch obtained. Take the branch where the stem's luck falls as the Heavenly Horse. Take the earthly branch of the official fortune palace to determine the Post-horse. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) with the命宫 (life palace) in寅, in the year of Jia or Ji (甲己), start from Bingyin (丙寅) and count sequentially from寅 to the official fortune palace at巳, obtaining Jisi (己巳). The luck of Ji (己) is in午 (the branch of午), which is associated with fire, so the Fire Star is the Heavenly Horse. The Triple Harmony of巳, 酉, and 丑 (巳酉丑) leads to the Post-horse in亥, which is associated with water, so the Water Star is the Earthly Post-horse. The rest follows the same pattern. If the Post-horse branch belongs to two stars, take the two stars flanking it and use them together.
The "Zhi Yuan" star indicates a person's level of position or status. A mnemonic says: starting from the卦气 position, count sequentially to the命宫, and the heavenly stem that emerges from this count is the Zhi Yuan star. If the身宫 or命宫 encounters this star, it indicates holding an important position; even for ordinary people, encountering it suggests having capable abilities. The specific method is: starting from the卦气 of the year's heavenly stem, count sequentially to the命宫, and determine which heavenly stem is reached. Take the celestial stem that is transformed into a star. For example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲) with the命宫 in the寅 position, since Jia belongs to the乾卦, start from the亥 position with Jia and count sequentially to the寅 position, arriving at Ding. Ding transforms into fire, so the Mars star is his Zhi Yuan.
The "juzhu" is the main star of a particular chart, derived from the zhiyuan. The rhyme says: take the heavenly stem of the zhiyuan, find the stem that is in the Six Harmony with it, then take the celestial body generated by that harmonious stem, which becomes the main star of the chart. If the natal chart's命宫 (life palace) and 身宫 (body palace) encounter this main star without being affected by Kongwang or broken conditions, then whether one is a scholar or a commoner, they will be respected by others. The specific method is: first determine the stem of the zhiyuan, then find which stem it harmonizes with, take the celestial body generated by that harmonized stem. For example, if the previously determined zhiyuan is the stem Ding, Ding harmonizes with Ren, and Ren generates Jidu, so Jidu is the juzhu of this chart.
This method is also called "guāqì" (trigram atmosphere), but it is called "tiān lù guāqì" (heavenly禄 trigram atmosphere), and the way it is calculated differs from the previous one. A mnemonic says: start with the heavenly stem of the year and count backwards in a cycle; stop at the palace where the sun or moon resides, depending on whether the person was born during the day or night. For those born during the day, count until the palace where the sun resides; for those born at night, count until the palace where the moon resides. Then look at the stem obtained and take the palace where its "lù" (favorable position) is located. The specific method is as follows: for example, a person born in the year of Jia (甲), if the sun is in the You palace (酉), Jia belongs to the Qian trigram (乾), so start from the Hai palace (亥) with Jia and count backwards to the You palace, arriving at Bing (丙). Bing and Wu (戊) both have their "lù" in Si (巳), so the Si palace is his "guāqì." This is called "tiān lù guāqì." The classic says: "A person destined for officialdom and prestige, if he does not have a 'guāqì,' how can he enjoy the state's salary?" This refers exactly to this method. Another example: a person born in the year of Yi (乙), if the moon is in the Mao palace (卯), Yi belongs to the Kun trigram (坤), which resides in Wei (未) and Shen (申), so start from the Shen palace (申) with Yi and count backwards to the Mao palace, arriving at Geng (庚). Geng's "lù" is in Shen, so the Shen palace is his "guāqì."
"The 'Dǒu Biāo' refers to the handle of the Big Dipper. Those whose destiny does not include the Dǒu Biāo are not respected by others. A rhyme says: starting from the position of the Month Builder, count from the hour of Xu to the hour of Hai, moving to the next palace each time; the Dǒu Biāo is most favorable when it falls in the official position. However, it is disliked if the stars Tian Jing and Di Wei appear there. Another rhyme says: if the ruler star of the person and the ruler star of the body fall in the palace of the Dǒu Biāo, it is disliked if they are in the evil position, and it is also feared if they meet the Kongwang. It is best if they are in the palace of official position, noble position, or the palace of Growth and Prosperity. Such people will eventually correct the government and achieve great achievements. The method is: place the hour of Xu on the palace of the Month Builder, and count forward to the person's birth hour. For example, someone born at the hour of Mao in the first month, the Month Builder is in the palace of Yin. Place the hour of Xu on the Yin palace, and count forward. The hour of Mao falls in the palace of Wei, so the palace of Wei is his Dǒu Biāo. The rest can be calculated in the same way."
"Zhu Shou" is also called "Yin Zhu Yang Shou." A mnemonic says: in January and July, the Zhu Shou is in the Zi palace; in February and June, it is in the Hai palace; in March and May, it is in the Xu palace; in August and December, it is in the Chou palace; in September and November, it is in the Yin palace; in April, it is in the You palace, and in October, it is in the Mao palace, these two months are considered separate and start anew. If the Sheng Palace and Ming Palace encounter Zhu Shou, it indicates a life of wealth and honor. The method of calculation is: starting from January in the Zi palace, count backwards to the You palace in April; in May, it turns to the Xu palace and counts forwards to the Mao palace in October; in November, it turns again to the Yin palace and counts backwards, arriving at the Chou palace in December. Alternating between forward and backward counting, with two intermediate turns, this is exactly what is referred to as "Jie Fa."
The "Tianyi Nobleman" is determined by the heavenly stem of the birth year: Jia year is in the You宫, Wu year and Geng year are in the Chou宫, Yi year is in the Shen宫, Ji year is in the Zi宫, Bing year is in the Mao宫, Xin year is in the Yin宫, Ding year is in the Hai宫, Ren year is in the Mao宫 (Rabbit), and Gui year is in the Si宫. The Tianyi Nobleman is referred to as the "Day Nobleman," used for those born during the day. The "Yutang Nobleman" is also determined by the heavenly stem of the birth year: Jia year is in the Chou宫, Wu year and Geng year are in the Wei宫, Ding year is in the You宫, Bing year is in the Hai宫, Yi year is in the Zi宫, Ji year is in the Shen宫, Ren year and Gui year are in the Mao宫 (Rabbit), and Xin year is in the Wu宫. The Yutang Nobleman is referred to as the "Night Nobleman," used for those born at night. These two Noblemen represent day and night respectively, each governing their own time. When using them, one should first determine whether the birth time is during the day or night and should not use them interchangeably.
The star Wen Chang (literally, "Literary Star") brings great fortune when it is in its proper position. To determine its position, refer to the heavenly stem of the year: Jia (甲) is in the Si (Snake) palace, Yi (乙) is in the Wu (Horse) palace, Bing (丙) and Wu (戊) are in the Shen (Monkey) palace, Ding (丁) and Ji (己) are in the You (Rooster) palace, Geng (庚) is in the Hai (Pig) palace, Xin (辛) is in the Xu (Dog) palace, Ren (壬) is in the Yin (Tiger) palace, and Gui (癸) is in the Mao (Rabbit) palace. When this star is present, it is as if one has climbed onto a cloud ladder. The reasoning is that the heavenly stem which is generated by the heavenly stem of the year is hidden in the earthly branch, and Wen Chang is located in that same earthly branch. Jia generates Bing, and Bing is hidden in Si, so Wen Chang for Jia is in Si. Yi generates Ding, and Ding is hidden in Wu. Bing generates Wu and Wu generates Geng, and both Wu and Geng are hidden in Shen. Ding generates Ji and Ji generates Xin, and both Ji and Xin are hidden in You. Geng generates Ren, and Ren is hidden in Hai. Ren generates Jia, and Jia is hidden in Yin. Gui generates Yi, and Yi is hidden in Mao. However, Xin does not follow the mutual generation rule, but instead has Wen Chang in the Xu (Dog) palace, because Xu is in the direction of Xin, and is flanked by Cong Gui (Helper) and He Kuai (River Chief). As for why the palaces of Zi (Rat), Chou (Ox), Chen (Dragon), and Wei (Goat) are not used, it is because Wen Chang's energy should be visible, not hidden. Zi and Chou are underground, and Chen and Wei are storage areas, all of which are concealed places, so they are not chosen.
The "Heavenly Kitchen" (天厨) is determined by the Heavenly Stem of the year. For Jia (甲) years, it is in the Si (巳) branch; for Yi (乙) years, it is in the Wu (午) branch; for Bing (丙) years, it is in the Zi (子) branch; for Ding (丁) years, it is in the Si (巳) branch; for Wu (戊) years, it is in the Wu (午) branch; for Ji (己) years, it is in the Shen (申) branch; for Geng (庚) years, it is in the Yin (寅) branch; for Xin (辛) years, it is in the Wu (午) branch; for Ren (壬) years, it is in the You (酉) branch; and for Gui (癸) years, it is in the Hai (亥) branch (Pig). The Heavenly Kitchen is also called "the禄 of the Food God" (食神之禄), indicating abundance in food and clothing. The reasoning is as follows: first, determine the Food God (食神) generated by the Heavenly Stem, then find the禄 of that Food God, which is where the Heavenly Kitchen lies. For example, for someone born in a Jia (甲) year, the Heavenly Kitchen is in the Si (巳) branch because the Food God generated by Jia is Bing (丙), and the禄 of Bing is in the Si (巳) branch. For someone born in a Yi (乙) year, the Heavenly Kitchen is in the Wu (午) branch because the Food God generated by Yi is Ding (丁), and the禄 of Ding is in the Wu (午) branch. The same method applies to the other Heavenly Stems.
The position of "Sui Dian" is such that if a beneficial star is present, it brings good fortune; if a malevolent star is there, it brings misfortune. A rhyme says: if the main star of one's birth year enters Sui Dian, extraordinary blessings will come; but if an external star arrives along with the atmosphere of Tian Qiong, disaster is certain. If the stars of fortune, official rank, authority, and the leading star are not fallen, then one will wear the green silk sash and the purple silk sash, and hold an official position in the court. The method is: starting from the palace of Sui Jia, count forward according to the heavenly stem of the birth year, and the palace reached is the Sui Dian.
The "Sui Jia" (Annual Palace) is also a star that brings good fortune if a beneficial star occupies it and brings misfortune if a harmful star occupies it. A rhyme says: foreign celestial influences entering this position are most harmful, and those miscellaneous stars that destroy official luck are also unfavorable; if there are also the heavenly prison and harmful stars added to the natal palace, then even if a person holds an official position, it is merely a title inherited from ancestors, not an achievement earned through one's own efforts. The method of calculation is very simple: the zodiac branch of the birth year determines the Sui Jia palace. Those born in the Year of the Rat have the Palace of the Rat as their Sui Jia, those born in the Year of the Ox have the Palace of the Ox as their Sui Jia, and so on for the other years.
This passage discusses the positions of禄勋 (Luxun), The Yang Blade (Yang Ren), 唐符 (Tangfu), and 国印 (Guoyin). Among these, Tangfu is also known as Feiren (Feiren). The mnemonic says: the position before the禄位 (Luxiu) is called 「刃」 (Ren), which has the nature of weapons. If the body palace or命宫 (Mingong) encounters this position, the person tends to be strong-willed and self-reliant. It is most dangerous whenInauspicious Sha (Xiongsha) such as 天雄 (Tianxiong) also appear together. If it also collides with 五鬼 (Wugui), the person may frequently suffer from punishment or exile. The position eight places ahead of禄位 is called 唐符 (Tangfu), and the ninth is called 国印 (Guoyin). If the body palace or命宫 encounters these two positions, it indicates receiving prominent titles and honors. However, if these positions fall into Kongwang (Kongwang), it instead leads to poverty. This shows that the same position can lead to vastly different outcomes depending on whether it is favorable or not.
This is a summary of the禄 (favorable position), 刃 (Yang Blade), 唐符 (Tang Symbol), and 国印 (National Seal) for the Ten Heavenly Stems. For Jia, the禄 is in the寅 (Yin) palace, the palace before the禄 (卯, Mao) is the Yang Blade, the opposite palace of卯 (酉, You) is Feiren Tang Fu, and the戌 (Xu) palace is the National Seal. For Yi, the禄 is in the卯 (Mao) palace, the辰 (Chen) palace is the Yin Blade, the戌 (Xu) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the亥 (Hai) palace is the National Seal. For Bing and Wu, the禄 is in the巳 (Si) palace, the午 (Wu) palace is the Yang Blade, the子 (Zi) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the丑 (Chou) palace is the National Seal. For Ding and Ji, the禄 is in the午 (Wu) palace, the未 (Wei) palace is the Yin Blade, the丑 (Chou) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the寅 (Yin) palace is the National Seal. For Geng, the禄 is in the申 (Shen) palace, the酉 (You) palace is the Yang Blade, the卯 (Mao) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the辰 (Chen) palace is the National Seal. For Xin, the禄 is in the酉 (You) palace, the戌 (Xu) palace is the Yin Blade, the辰 (Chen) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the巳 (Si) palace is the National Seal. For Ren, the禄 is in the亥 (Hai) palace, the子 (Zi) palace is the Yang Blade, the午 (Wu) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the未 (Wei) palace is the National Seal. For Gui, the禄 is in the子 (Zi) palace, the丑 (Chou) palace is the Yin Blade, the未 (Wei) palace is Feiren Tang Fu, and the申 (Shen) palace is the National Seal. It can be seen that the general rule is: the palace before the禄 is the刃, the opposite palace of the刃 is Feiren Tang Fu, and the palace after that is the National Seal.
"Tiānxióng" refers to the White Tiger, and "Dìcí" refers to the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit. They are one yang and one yin, each governing their own path of good and bad fortune. A mnemonic says: Tiānxióng and Dìcí reside in the third and ninth positions respectively, ahead of the year's ruler. It is most undesirable for them to fall into the official luck宫 and the body and destiny宫. If they also conjoin with凶煞 such as Jianfeng, Yang Blade, and Fei Lian, it indicates a bad end. The method of calculation is: count three positions forward from the year's ruler's宫 to find Tiānxióng, and the ninth position is Dìcí. Another view is to first determine Dìcí, and its opposite宫 is Tiānxióng. Originally, they are a pair that are six positions apart and opposite. These two are most忌 to meet the master of fortune. Once they meet the fortune's energy, it will be dispersed.
"The year symbol" refers to the annual official symbol, also known as the five ghosts flying symbol. The rhyme says: starting from the year branch, count forward five positions, the deity of that palace is called the official symbol ghost; if it coincides with the Yang Blade evil, sitting in the命宫 or approaching the身宫, one will suffer unexpected misfortunes and regrets. "The month symbol" refers to the official symbol of the current month. The rhyme says: starting from theWu Palace as the first, proceed through each palace in order, until reaching the birth month, the official symbol falls on that palace, indicating frequent disputes and quarrels. In summary: counting forward five positions from the current year's position gives the official symbol, also known as the flying symbol, year symbol, or five ghosts; the month symbol starts from the正月'sWu Palace, proceeding through each palace until reaching the birth month. Both are most feared when they fall on the身宫, 命宫, or the path of the current life span.
"Great Loss" and "Minor Loss" are a pair of calamities related to financial loss. A rhyme says: these two are most disliked, they are positioned as the sixth and seventh in the sequence before the year's ruler; if they appear in the body palace, destiny palace, or fields and property, even if one becomes prosperous temporarily, the family fortune will eventually scatter. The method of calculation is: starting from the year ruler, the sixth position is Minor Loss, and the seventh is Great Loss. They are most feared when they fall in the body palace, destiny palace, or the fields and property sectors; whenever these positions are encountered, it indicates that one gains much but also loses much throughout life, ultimately leading to inauspicious outcomes.
The "Heavenly Loss" is calculated based on the birth month: January and July are in the Zi palace, February and August in the Yin palace, March and September in the Chen palace, April and October in the Wu palace, May and November in the Shen palace, and June and December in the Xu palace. A mnemonic says that those who encounter it are likely to be struck by lightning or injured by a tiger and die, so it is also called "Thunder and Lightning Death." The "Earthly Loss" is also calculated based on the birth month: January and July are in the You palace, February and August in the Hai palace, March and September in the Chou palace, April and October in the Mao palace, May and November in the Si palace, and June and December in the Wei palace. Heavenly Loss and Earthly Loss together are called the Two Losses. Their interpretation is the same as the previous Great Loss and Minor Loss, both indicating financial loss and misfortune, and encountering them leads to difficulty in accumulating family wealth.
The method of calculating "Month廉" starts from the Shen palace for the first month, and counts sequentially until the birth month. A mnemonic says that if this star comes to harm the命, it leads to a sudden and violent death, which needs no further explanation. The "Month廉" star is rarely used by people: considering only the palace where Month廉 is located, the harm is relatively light; but if the main star of Month廉 comes to harm the命 palace or the current period, the danger is extremely severe and cannot be avoided. For example, someone born in the first month has Month廉 in the Shen palace, which belongs to water, so the water star is his main star of Month廉. The method of calculating "Month煞" is the same as Month廉. The starting points are: the first month in Xu palace, the second month in Si palace, the third month in Wu palace, the fourth month in Wei palace, the fifth month in Yin palace, the sixth month in Mao palace, the seventh month in Chen palace, the eighth month in Hai palace, the ninth month in Zi palace, the tenth month in Chou palace, the eleventh month in Shen palace, and the twelfth month in You palace. Committing this煞 leads to the most severe injuries.
The "value of difficulty" is determined by matching the birth month with a star: those born in January and February have the Sun as their value of difficulty star, those born in March and April have the Moon, those born in May and June have the Mars and Rahu, those born in July and August have the Water star and the Moon孛, those born in September and October have the Jupiter and the Purple Qi, and those born in November and December have the Venus. The author says this is a true secret passed down by immortals. For example, those born in January and February have the Sun as their value of difficulty star; if they also encounter otherInauspicious Sha, the danger is especially severe. "The killer" is also called "fragmentation." A rhyme says: if a person's destiny meets the fragmentation evil star, their wealth will be broken down as quickly as snow melted by boiling water, becoming empty in an instant; if the year's destiny and limits also come into play, lawsuits and disputes will follow one after another. It determines the position based on the triple harmony of the year's branch: those born in the years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are in the Si (Snake) palace, those born in the years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are in the You (Rooster) palace, and those born in the years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are in the Chou (Ox) palace. Encountering these is considered a major忌.
The "Xianchi" (Sensual Pool) is determined by the Triple Harmony Formation based on the year branch. Those born in the years of Shen, Zi, and Chen are in the You (Rooster) palace, which indicates disorder in human relationships. Those born in the years of Yin, Wu, and Xu are in the Mao (Rabbit) palace. Those born in the years of Si, You, and Chou are in the Wu (Horse) palace, moving about in the south. Those born in the years of Hai, Mao, and Wei are in the Zi (Rat) palace, which is considered unfavorable. If the body palace or destiny palace is directly positioned at the Xianchi location, or if stars belonging to Xianchi fall into the body or destiny palace, and these are combined with the planets of Jin (Metal), Shui (Water), and Yuebo (Moon孛), men are likely to suffer from tuberculosis and physical decline, while women may end up in the entertainment industry. Xianchi is also called "Taohua" (Plum Blossom), and it specifically governs matters related to sexual desire.
The Great Sha is determined by the year's earthly branch: those born in the Year of the Rat are in the Monkey (申) palace, those in the Year of the Ox are in the Rooster (酉) palace, those in the Year of the Tiger are in the Dog (戌) palace, those in the Year of the Rabbit are in the Snake (巳) palace, those in the Year of the Dragon are in the Horse (午) palace, those in the Year of the Snake are in the Goat (未) palace, those in the Year of the Horse are in the Tiger (寅) palace, those in the Year of the Goat are in the Rabbit (卯) palace, those in the Year of the Sheep are in the Dragon (辰) palace, those in the Year of the Dog are in the Pig (亥) palace, those in the Year of the Pig are in the Rat (子) palace, and the cycle continues with the Year of the Pig being in the Ox (丑) palace. The Great Sha is also known as Fei Lian. It is inauspicious for the body palace, destiny palace, and the degrees of the life span; once encountered, misfortune comes quickly. The Kongwang is determined by the six-jia cycle: in the Jiazi cycle, Kongwang is in the Dog (戌) and Pig (亥) palaces; in the Jiaxu cycle, it is in the Monkey (申) and Rooster (酉) palaces; in the Jiashen cycle, it is in the Horse (午) and Goat (未) palaces; in the Jiawu cycle, it is in the Dragon (辰) and Snake (巳) palaces; in the Jiachen cycle, it is in the Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯) palaces; in the Jiayin cycle, it is in the Rat (子) and Ox (丑) palaces. The rule for distinguishing is: for yang years, the empty palace is yang; for yin years, the empty palace is yin; for yang years, the empty is called "kong"; for yin years, the empty is called "wang".
