On the Dingmao day, the fourth arrangement: the stem is on the Chen position.
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Remote Control" — among the four lessons, neither the upper nor the lower sections are mutually controlling, so we have to take the distant controlling god for the initiating transmission; it is also combined with "Double Disturbance," indicating two layers of disturbance; and "Sky Net," as if a sky net is overhead covering everything; and "Triple Interaction," meaning mutual punishment and harm occurring in three places. The "Lesson Meaning" states in four characters: the禄神 is riding on the White Tiger and Black Tortoise, twoInauspicious General, repeatedly suffering from the hardships of the ghost爻; the middle transmission is again the god of closed mouth, and it also worries about matters concerning the household.
The first transmission is a ghost hexagram, which is further entangled by the Teng Snake; the middle transmission is a wealth hexagram, but it has become a sealed spirit; the final transmission is a禄神, yet it is riding on the White Tiger and the Black Tortoise, which are associated with thieves, darkness, and deception. None of the three transmissions are favorable. Fortunately, although the first transmission's water hexagram is mutually controlling the day stem, it is a remote mutual control like a bow and arrow, which is weak, and the earth hexagram on the day stem can reverse control the water. What is truly worrying is the mutual punishment between the water and the卯, which may bring some unfavorable events in the household.
The person who drew this reading is mostly concerned with family matters or someone from outside causing trouble. Although the current situation seems threatening, it will soon calm down, and neither worry nor joy will be realized. The matter is distant and cannot be achieved at the moment; it is better to take action later. Fortunately, the divine power of the ten-day period is initiating the transmission, and the day and night noble forces are moving in the right direction. Even if there are evil spirits, they will not harm anyone. Over time, good fortune will gradually emerge, the family will be harmonious and peaceful, and the harmful influences will naturally disappear.
Weather: The sky is overcast with changing clouds, and rain falls but does not reach the ground. Residence: There is disharmony among family members of different generations and ranks; be cautious about the safety of the household. Marriage: Not suitable; forcing a union may cause harm. Pregnancy: There will be a false alarm. Career: Some progress is made, but the salary is still not generous. Seeking wealth: It is difficult to obtain, or there may be help from a nobleman secretly.
Disease: Indicates illness in the internal organs, belonging to the category of deficiency, fatigue, fear and shock. With a good doctor, it can be cured quickly. Lost items: Can be found again. Travel: Not favorable for long journeys, also avoid traveling in the first and second months. Waiting for a traveler: The person will return soon, but there will be a frightening experience on the way. Lawsuits: It is advisable to settle matters amicably, otherwise there is a risk of being punished. Military action: It is favorable to launch an attack in winter.
The "Bifa Fu" says: mutual suspicion arises because the six harms follow closely. The "Xiu Zhong Jin" states: "Hao Shi" (Arrow of Grass) remotely affects the third lesson's initiating transmission, which indicates the yang spirit of the day branch fighting against itself; two yang spirits mutually attacking each other have greater strength and force, so one should not act first. The "Zhi Qiao" says: "Sanjiao" (Three Intersections) lessons indicate there are outsiders secretly involved in private affairs at home, either fleeing or avoiding calamity. According to Zeng's view, in "Sanjiao" lessons, the virtue is within and the punishment is outside, thus it is favorable to stay at home and not suitable for traveling far; any action that was originally joyful may turn into anger, and reconciliation may lead to renewed enmity. The "Ke Jing Ding'uo" says: taking the initiating transmission of the third and fourth lessons is called "Yuanshe" (Long-range Shooting), and the凶 (evil) trend gradually weakens.
On the Dingmao day, fifth arrangement: the stem is on the卯.
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Original Head" — a pattern where the upper deity overcomes the lower deity and initiates the transmission, indicating a proper hierarchy; it also includes "Curved and Straight," as the three transmissions form the wood triad of Hai-Mao-Wei, reflecting the meaning of "Wood is curved and straight" from the "Hongfan" (Classic of Documents); it also includes "Four Tombs" and "Rebirth," with continuous generation; and it includes "Incompleteness," as the four lessons are not fully present. The "Lesson Meaning" is expressed in four characters: the three transmissions and four lessons cycle back and forth, with the matter blocked by obstacles; although the wood triad is favorable, it cannot be relied upon, and one must also consider how the heavenly general of the day influences the situation.
The four lessons and three transmissions keep coming back to the three characters: Hai, Mao, and Wei, indicating an unending cycle. Although the matter seems complicated, it remains within a confined circle. The wood of Mao is able to nourish the day stem, appearing to be a reliable support; however, the heavenly general on the day is entirely of earth (the original text says 'pure shang,' which is likely a mistake for 'earth'), and earth is generated by fire, which in turn drains the day stem. Thus, gains and losses are equally divided, and perfection is not achieved. Although Mao wood can nourish Ding fire, it is also the place where Ding fire is weakened. Although Hai water can nourish the day branch Mao wood, it is itself sitting on an empty period. Overall, this is favorable for the house but not for people, favorable for the other party but not for oneself.
This lesson has only one instance where the upper god overcomes the lower god. The three transmissions will form a wooden structure, called "curved and straight." Now the卯 is placed on the未, which is first straight then curved. It is like a good piece of timber meeting spring, with branches and leaves flourishing, but gradually there is a hidden danger of rot and insect damage. Only by cultivating virtue can it grow into a towering shade, avoiding the problem of starting strong and ending in withering. The phrase "丁日枝枯" refers to fire draining the energy of wood, which is speaking about the wooden structure itself; but from the perspective of the day stem, the wooden structure nourishes fire, which becomes the parent爻 for the day stem of丁. In general, a gentleman who draws this divination will have good fortune, while a petty person will have bad fortune.
Weather: There is much wind and little rain. Residence: It is suitable to add or build more structures. Marriage: Both families of the man and woman are wealthy and well-mannered, and they are already old relatives; however, it is not favorable to cast the divination in autumn, winter, or at night. Pregnancy and childbirth: A boy is born, and if the divination is cast at night, mother and child will be uneasy. Official rank: One can achieve prominence, and being posted outside the capital is favorable if heading east; for academic examinations, those in spring are advantageous. Seeking wealth: It is easy to obtain, but if the divination is cast during the day, it is unfavorable due to the Heavenly General losing its strength.
Disease: This indicates wind illness and symptoms related to the liver qi. If the illness is recent, it is easy to cure, but if it has lasted a long time, it becomes difficult to treat. Lost items: They are in the southwest direction, hidden in dense woods or among wooden objects. Travel: Going east is favorable. Waiting for a traveler: The person will return immediately, but the message he brings is not reliable. Litigation: It is advisable to have the nobleman mediate, thus preventing disaster. Military action: It is favorable for the leading side to take the initiative, and the first to act will win; at the same time, there is an indication of ceasing hostilities.
The "Bi Fa Fu" says: When the heavenly stems and earthly branches mutually generate, and the three transmissions also mutually generate, everything is beneficial; if the ghost爻 is riding on the heavenly yi nobleman, the mischief comes from the gods. The "Guan Jing Xiang" says: This divination is suitable for building boats and carts, starting construction projects, and searching for timber, all things go smoothly, and it is especially good in spring. The "Zhi Zhang Fu" says: If the three transmissions are all parents爻, there is no need to seek security, and security comes naturally. It also says: Even if one clearly sees a god that generates me but cannot actually generate me, it is better not to have that generation at all.
On the Dingmao day, sixth division: the stem is on the寅 (Yin) position.
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Re-examination," combined with "Earth Net," "Heavenly Prison," and "Transmission Grave." It is as if one is trapped in Heavenly Prison, with difficulty entering or exiting; also combined with "Transmission Grave," meaning the three transmissions fall into the grave. The "Lesson Meaning" states in four-character phrases: The Day Stem is riding on the God of Growth, and if one holds onto it, benefits will be endless; but once it moves, it meets the Ghost Trigram and the Grave God; those whose destiny is in the Si hexagram should especially be cautious.
Yin wood is the place of growth for Ding fire, and if it can be held firmly, it will bring continuous benefits throughout one's life; but if it is abandoned and not held, a single movement will meet the ghost爻 and the tomb deity. Suppose a person's birth chart falls in the Si palace, which contains hidden Bing and Ding fire (the original text suggests both characters should be read as 'Bing'), it is both captured by the Xu earth tomb and attacked by Zi water, making longevity difficult to maintain. The "Bi Fa Fu" says, "The dragon added to the life qi brings good fortune gradually," meaning the Azure Dragon rides upon the heavenly stem of the day, and this heavenly stem is exactly the life qi of the month. Although there is no visible sign of success at present, it can gradually lead to prosperity. If this lesson is obtained by casting a night lesson in the third month, it refers to this situation.
This lesson is like a furnace where the charcoal is all ready and they are about to cast a seal (the original text "谋孟" has "孟" as a misprint for "欲"), but the卯wood used as the seal mold is not included in the three transmissions, so the mold is broken and the seal cannot be cast, so it has to be put aside. The diviner should consider changing his approach or settle down to maintain his old business, and there will still be some chance. If he acts rashly again, even though he spends a lot of effort, he will inevitably melt the gold into waste iron.
Weather: When casting a divination during the day, there will be rain at first, then it clears up; when casting during the night, there will be rain after a long period of clear weather, accompanied by lightning. House: Indicates that the house is in disrepair or has been rented out and suffered damage. Marriage: Indicates harmony in marriage, as well as secret unions between men and women without the need for a matchmaker. Pregnancy: Indicates unstable fetal condition; when casting during the night, it suggests difficulty in childbirth. Official Rank: When the Nobleman moves in a favorable direction, one may obtain official rank, but it does not indicate great success or prominence. Seeking Wealth: Wealth is extremely difficult to obtain, and much money is likely spent on women.
Disease: Indicates a condition of madness. A newly acquired illness can be cured quickly, but a long-standing illness is dangerous. It is advisable to use符水 (symbolic water) and medicine, as well as to perform rituals and prayers for relief. Lost items: The lost item was stolen by a servant, and the item has not yet left the house. Travel: One should only move nearby and keep changing locations; long-distance travel should be avoided. Waiting for a traveler: The day stem'sTomb Spirit (burial deity) is present in the day branch, so the person will arrive soon. Litigation: The matter has already been resolved, but it will resurface again. Military action: Indicates the loss of troops and is unfavorable.
The *Bi Fa Fu* says: When the Heavenly Empress and Liu He both come to indicate marriage, there is no need for a matchmaker; if the Day Stem's墓神 also serves as the 关神, it indicates a decaying house and declining people. When the Heavenly General and the god it is over contend with each other, the matter in question will be dangerous. The *Ke Jing* says: In spring, the 关神 is Chou; in summer, Chen; in autumn, Wei; and in winter, Xu. If the Day Stem's Tomb Spirit coincides with the 关神 and is also Initiating Transmission over the Day Stem, it indicates a ruined house and a declining population. For example, if the day is Dingmao and the lesson is cast in winter, with Xu over Mao and Initiating Transmission, this is exactly such a situation.
On the Dingmao day, seventh arrangement, the stem is on Chou.
This lesson pattern is called "Reverse Chant" — the Heaven Plate and Earth Plate combine to form six clashes, causing disturbances and unrest among the deities; it also includes "Three Intersections" and "Two Troubles," as well as "Chopping the Wheel," which is like cutting wood to make a wheel, requiring repeated consideration and refinement. The four-character "Lesson Meaning" states: all are active Ding deities, never stopping for a moment; if the lesson is cast during the day in summer, there is a risk of fire, but if cast at night, one will meet a nobleman who brings wealth.
In the four lessons and three transmissions, all four instances of the卯 position carry the Ding spirit; once activated, it is not a minor matter. Moreover, with the occurrence of 'reverse chant', the spirits clash with each other, leaving no room for rest. In summer, the fire energy is at its peak. When casting a divination during the day, the酉 metal is the dominant fire ghost, riding on the Vermilion Bird (which governs documents, speech, and fire), to attack the day branch's dwelling, indicating a fire disaster. If casting at night, the酉 position is occupied by the heavenly virtue nobleman, which means one can certainly gain wealth from the nobleman. Furthermore, the spirit on the day branch and the spirit on the day stem mutually attack the day stem and day branch, which is called 'wuyin'. Now, the day stem is attacking the spirit on the day branch, which is a true separation hexagram. If both spouses' birth years also encounter this hexagram, the prediction will be particularly accurate. The day branch isGuiyou, which belongs to the 'wealth hiding ghost' pattern—where the heavenly stem that hides the wealth becomes a ghost that attacks the body; at the same time, it is also the 'closed mouth' pattern of the wealth爻.
This is a lesson without support, also called "Zhuan Lun." In the Three Transmissions, the branches of Mao and You are in conflict, appearing as harmony but actually not harmonious, leading to repeated back-and-forth and wasting time. A gentleman who maintains righteousness will have good fortune. If one forces the matter to completion, the loss will be greater than the gain. Therefore, when things are in harmony, it is like a wheel that has already been cut, capable of bearing heavy loads and traveling far, indicating good news of promotion or transfer. When things are not in harmony, even if there is movement, there is no benefit, only confusion and indecision. This lesson is only favorable for revisiting old matters or changing one's circumstances, thus fulfilling its omen.
Weather: Sudden changes between cloudy and sunny, mostly indicating drought. House: Indicates damage to the entrance, beware of fire in summer, also indicates arguments between husband and wife and discomfort among female family members. Marriage: There is conflict, not suitable. Pregnancy: Be careful of miscarriage, or the fetus may be ill, or the child may be born mute. Career: Very beneficial, if the lesson is cast in the daytime, it indicates being appointed as an examiner; if cast at night, it indicates being summoned by the court. However, it is better to delay than to act early. Seeking wealth: Wealth comes from the Nobleman, but it is difficult to ask for it directly.
Disease: Suffering from recurring illness, unable to rest in peace, or possibly having a condition like dysentery with closed mouth, or throat swelling and blockage, or phlegm causing confusion and fainting, with loss of appetite. Lost items: Already far away, difficult to find. Travel: Favorable to travel by land, beneficial to go west. Waiting for a traveler: The person is still on the way, but has changed direction to another place. Lawsuits: Fighting within closed doors, each side seeking support from powerful individuals. Military conflict: Both sides suffer casualties, it is best to adopt a defensive strategy.
The "Bifa Fu" says: Between husband and wife, there is disorder and licentiousness, each having their own private affairs. The "Ke Jing" says: The fire ghost rides on the Teng Snake and Vermilion Bird to attack the day branch's house, indicating a fire accident in the family. The so-called fire ghost refers to the Wu of spring, the You of summer, the Zi of autumn, and the Mao of winter. For example, if this lesson is taken in summer, the You is placed on the Mao with a daytime general, riding the Vermilion Bird to attack the house, then one should take mud from the bottom of a well and apply it to the stove to appease the situation.
On the Dingmao day, the eighth arrangement: the heavenly stem is on the child branch.
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Re-examination," combined with "Casting the Seal" —巳 represents the furnace, 戌 represents the seal, and 卯 represents the seal mold, forming an image of casting a seal into a finished object; it is also combined with "Taking the Carriage" — an image of taking a carriage and receiving a title. The "Lesson Meaning" in four-character phrases says: both the other party and oneself face misfortune; the empty void and the tomb god both fall into the middle transmission; the final transmission is the active Ding god, and the first transmission is the post-horse, indicating that the matter is uncertain and fluctuating.
The day stem is overcome by the water of the branch, and the day branch is overcome by the metal of the hour, indicating that both the self and the other party are not auspicious. The earth dog (戌) is both empty and a tomb deity, and it falls in the middle transmission, indicating that the matter will be obstructed halfway, with unclear truths. Three transmissions entering a tomb is not a good omen, and when it meets the tomb of the day stem, the matter should be stopped. However, the initial transmission's post-horse and the final transmission's ding deity are both unstable, leading to constant toil and restlessness with no moment of peace. If a person in official position draws this divination, he will certainly receive a respectable post.
This is a "Chongshen" divination, also called "Zhu Yin": the fire of Si is the furnace, the earth of Xu is the seal, and the wood of Mao is the seal mold. If Xu and Mao fall into Kongwang, it becomes broken seal and ruined mold, making it difficult to advance in official rank. Both people and dwellings are restrained; the child (zi) placed on Wei indicates incomplete affairs. The monkey (shen) placed on Mao signifies competition and striving for advancement, mainly suffering from encroachment and damage. Fortunately, this case falls into the pattern "Zhu Yin Cheng Xuan," which allows one to avoid calamity and approach good fortune.
Heavenly weather: Either thunder or a rainbow may appear, but there will be little rain. Residence: There will be minor losses in the household, the house may be in disrepair, and the master will have to travel far. Marriage: It is auspicious to marry into a prominent family through adoption or alliance, but if one marries a wife oneself, she will not be the main wife. Pregnancy: The final transmission harms the fetal deity, so one should beware of miscarriage. Official rank: One may pass the imperial examinations and be summoned by a high official, especially benefiting from acting as a temporary official. However, it is unfavorable for the family. Seeking wealth: It is advisable to seek support from someone far away; the effort required is great, but the reward is easy to obtain.
Disease: There are ghosts causing trouble, and the condition is very dangerous during the day. Lost items: The things will return on their own. Travel: It is most auspicious for officials to travel, while others going out are to avoid calamity. Waiting for a traveler: The person will certainly return, but not on time. Litigation: This belongs to matters of hardship, doubt and worry, and it will end with reconciliation. Military action: Cease fighting, put down weapons, envoys come and go, indicating a peaceful resolution.
The *Bifa Fu* says: If both the day stem and day branch are harmed, one should beware of damage to both the person and their home; if the Heavenly Empress and Liu He are present to indicate marriage, there is no need for a matchmaker. The *Ke Jing* says: On a Dingmao day, the hour stem Shen is placed on the Mao position, with the Heavenly General riding on theLiu He in the daytime, which is called the "Six Pieces of Board" pattern. Because theLiu He is riding on Shen, which is placed on the Mao, it symbolizes a corpse placed in a coffin: Shen represents the body, and Mao represents the coffin. When divining about illness, this is an unfavorable omen, and further judgment must be made based on the specific class god related to the matter. If it is about the illness of the wife, death is certain, because the wife's wealth has entered the coffin.
On the Dingmao day, ninth division: Heaven above Hai.
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Re-examination," combined with "Curved and Straight" (three transmissions form the Wood triad of Hai-Mao-Wei), "Incompleteness," and "Reciprocal Circulation" — the four lessons and three transmissions cycle back and forth. The "Lesson Meaning" is expressed in four-character phrases: the heavenly general riding during the day disperses and drains the fire energy of Ding, but the three transmissions then turn back to nourish me; both good and bad aspects are equally present; following the hidden stem sequence further, it will provoke the nobleman's anger.
The heavenly generals used during the day are all of earth type, which drains the energy of the fire element (ding). The three transmissions are all of wood type, which nourishes the fire element. On one hand, they nourish me, on the other hand, they drain me, so the outcome is balanced between good and bad. The four lessons and three transmissions do not go beyond the characters Hai, Mao, and Wei, indicating a repetitive and confused situation. Both day and night dignitaries are attacked by the lower spirits, so going to see them will certainly provoke anger. According to the 'circle' pattern, this divination belongs to 're-examination' rather than 'involvement of harm'. If it is about an evil matter, the evil will come true; if it is about a good matter, the good will be achieved, so it is also called 'pearl beads'.
This lesson shows the dwelling place as dark and obscure, with the generated spirit falling into vacancy. Overall, it indicates a state of confusion and blockage, with affairs hindered and not proceeding smoothly. The middle transmission,亥 water, is exactly vacant for the current ten-day period. 亥 is originally a strong and capable material, but inside it has already rotted, unable to bear heavy responsibilities. Even a good craftsman can only remain idle and unused. If one is willing to abandon this aspect and seek another path, success may be achieved. It is auspicious to cast the lesson in spring or at night. If this is a divination about illness: although亥 water is the ghost of the day stem丁, because it is vacant, it is not to be feared. The final transmission,未 earth, is capable of restraining the亥 ghost, but it is itself restrained by the day branch卯 wood, so it cannot save the person. This indicates that although the doctor understands the illness, he is actually unable to cure it.

The "Bifa Fu" says: If both the day and night noblemen are overcome, it is difficult to rely on a nobleman; the position that can control the ghost爻 is where the good doctor is located; if the ghost爻 is riding on the heavenly virtue nobleman, then the trouble comes from a deity. The "Xiu Zhong Jin" says: Trees rely on water as their root, and on a day of Ding (which represents fire), the fire is strong and drains the wood, so the branches become withered. The "Ke Jing Ding'E" says: Going from top to bottom is called "qu" (bend), and if亥 is placed on 未, it is "qu"; if卯 is placed on 亥, then it first bends and then straightens, meaning it is difficult at first but easy later, and news spread by word of mouth is often not reliable.
On the Dingmao day, the tenth arrangement: the stem is on the戌 position.
This lesson's "Lesson Pattern" is "Re-examination," combined with "Three Mutuals," "Six Instruments" (the hidden god attains the Six Instruments), and "Earthly Disturbance." The four-character "Lesson Meaning" states: the heavenly stem and earthly branch above and below meet and combine, mutually attached, one after another recommending each other; yet the mind remains confused and unclear; being able to obtain a position to act on one's behalf is indeed enviable.
The combination of Wu and Wei, and of Mao and Xu, are mutual pairings, showing mutual affection. Starting from the first transmission, they generate one after another, continuing until they reach the day stem. This indicates a sign of someone recommending and supporting the person. Xu earth is the墓 of the day stem, which is now covering over the day stem, causing the person to be confused and unclear. The strong禄神 is present on the day branch, indicating the possibility of obtaining a position as a temporary official, which is quite desirable. On the fifth, sixth, and seventh days of the first lunar month, the third, fourth, and fifth days of the second lunar month, the first, second, and third days of the third lunar month, and the first day of the fourth lunar month, if these days are encountered, they are considered as the 'earthly disturbance' hexagram.
This lesson involves the three transmissions interacting through mutual generation, indicating smoothness in affairs and favorable opportunities. Unfortunately, the day stem is covered by the tomb god, leading to confusion and lack of clarity; both people and the dwelling are drained, resulting in emptiness and lack of tangible results. Moreover, the "three intersections" suggest entanglement in matters, while the "two troubles" indicate encountering obstacles everywhere, so caution is needed for good fortune. Fortunately, the middle and final transmissions are positioned over the term and branch indicators, suggesting that gradually, good fortune will be obtained in the future.
Weather: There has been a long period of cloudy weather, with occasional rain, and it only cleared up after thunder. Residence: There are hidden private matters at home, and there is also a need to guard against theft of money. Women in the household may suffer misfortune. Marriage: It is easy to form a relationship, but it is not suitable. Pregnancy: Childbirth is easy, but there is a need to guard against postpartum hemorrhage and weakness. Official rank: Although someone recommends you, you yourself miss the opportunity; if you take on a position as an agent or inherit a post, it will be auspicious. Seeking wealth: The wealth obtained is immediately spent, mostly on things like repairing tombs and building houses.
Disease: It may be a blood condition or a postpartum illness, both belonging to the category of deficiency and exhaustion, and treatment should focus on tonification. Lost items: Do not search thoroughly, as the more you search, the greater the loss. Travel: It is favorable to visit relatives or attend a recommendation appointment, but be cautious of forgetting personal belongings. Waiting for a traveler: The person will arrive on the day of Chou or Yin. Lawsuits: Those with a favorable divination will have someone secretly helping them, while those with an unfavorable divination should beware of being sentenced to imprisonment or exile. Military affairs: There will be envoys coming, mostly with more words than substance, and inconsistent statements from before and after.
The *Bi Fa Fu* says: When the official of fortune is located on the day branch, it indicates acting as a deputy, with unclear status; if the three transmissions generate each other in sequence, it suggests someone will recommend a person; if both the person and the dwelling are weakened and drained, both ends will suffer from theft. The *Ke Jing* says: When the hour of Wu is placed on the hour of You, it is called "dead meeting"; when the hour of You is placed on the hour of Wu, it is called "broken meeting"; when reverse chanting and opposition occur, it is called "turning back meeting," all of which indicate a situation that cannot be reconciled. If there are no yin combinations among the four lessons, it is called "three meetings not meeting"; if the sovereign year, month builder, day branch, and hour are all the four central hours of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, it is called "three meetings not resolving"; these two situations are more harmful than ordinary three meetings. Conversely, if the energy is strong and the heavenly general is favorable, it is called "riding in a carriage," which indicates a high official position and great fortune.
