On Dingsi day, First Arrangement: Heaven above Wei.

Qing (清) · anonymous (佚名) · Volume 75 / 85

Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

The three aspects of the lesson pattern are: 'Hidden Chant' where the heavens and earth discs overlap and all deities remain in their original positions; 'Original Vitality' where theFetal Spirit initiates the transmission; and 'Inspiring Virtue' where the hidden yin deity of the day stem initiates the transmission. The lesson meaning states: the day stem is on the position of Wei and the day branch is on the position of Si, with the central position of Wu, the禄, included in between; the Black Tortoise holds the wealth爻 while the Ding deity drives from behind; in a night divination, the White Tiger is also on the position of Yin wood; two Ding deities initiate simultaneously, indicating that the matter will come about very quickly.

Dingsi fire's strength is in Wu. The day stem is Wei and the day branch is Si, so Wu, the position of fire's strength, is sandwiched between them. Therefore, it is suitable for divination regarding salary and food. The first transmission is Si fire, and during the ten-day cycle, the hidden stem is exactly Dingsi. The middle transmission is Shen metal, which is the wealth hexagram for Dingsi day. In daytime divination, it is accompanied by Yuanwu, meaning the wealth is in front being chased by Dingsi spirit and in the back being supported by Yuanwu, so any movement will surely lead to some mishap. The final transmission is Yin wood, which is the life qi for Dingsi fire. In night divination, it is accompanied by Baihu, which is fierce and fierce. The Si in Dingsi falls on the day branch and serves as the initiating transmission. Two Dingsi spirits are simultaneously activated, so the matter will naturally come quickly.

Fuyin is essentially about remaining still and guarding, but if the initiating transmission is occupied by Ding, it instead indicates instability and restlessness. There is mutual punishment and mutual control among the three transmissions, meaning that the parents' generation will surely face difficulties. The day stem is not able to generate the upper god, leading to continuous unnecessary expenses. The Ding god is seated in the house position, causing the house to be in disorder. The wife and wealth hexagram is occupied by Teng Snake and Black Tortoise. If this is divined in March, there is concern for illness. The only favorable aspect is the official position.

Heavenly conditions: The Vermilion Bird flies into the sky, indicating clear weather. Home: The house is filled with the presence of the Ding deity, indicating turmoil within the household. Achievements: The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches enclose the禄 deity, which is most auspicious. Seeking wealth: It is favorable to gain hidden wealth. Marriage: There is a lack of mutual benefit. Pregnancy and childbirth: The fetus is female, and the delivery will be difficult. Travel: Be cautious of illness on the way. Travelers: The traveler will arrive soon. Capture: To find a man, go to the southeast; to find a woman, go to the southwest; thieves will not escape abroad. Warfare: Be cautious of the enemy using deception.

The "Bifa Fu" says: When encountering the god Ding and the Post-horse, it should be interpreted as an indication of movement. The "Duanyan" records a case: A person born in the year Renshen, at the age of thirty-seven, consulted about his future in the sixth month of the year Wuxu, with the month general being Wei and the time being Wei. The interpreter said: On the day Dingsi, with the trigram Yin as the academy, since the person's age is now at Yin, he will certainly pass the local examination. This is because the first transmission falls on the position of officialdom, and Tian Kong indicates reputation. The middle transmission is the wife's palace, with the superior element being the Black Tortoise, which signifies strange and confusing influences. Since Shen belongs to the monkey, the wife will be deceived by spirits of the monkey kind. Four years later, he will move to live with his wife, because there is only one Ding god but two Sis, and Si represents the residence, so two Sis together indicate two residences. He will achieve success in his later years, attaining an official position at the level of the state's ceremonial office, due to the final transmission of Yin wood overcoming Tai Chang. At the time of his death, he will not have children to attend him, because there is no son's element in the three transmissions. All these predictions were later fulfilled.

On the Dingsi day, second arrangement, the stem is in the morning.

The three elements of the lesson pattern: the 'Yuan Shou' which is the only instance in the four lessons where the upper god overcomes the lower god and is used as the initiating transmission; the 'Tui Ru' which refers to the three transmissions each following the previous one in a backward sequence; and the 'Zhan Guan' which involves the presence of a horse and a conflict with the gate. The lesson meaning states: prosperity and longevity along with growth are inherently good things, but in both day and night divinations they are suppressed by the White Tiger, resulting in the exhaustion of both body and mind and achieving nothing.

The fire of the hour Wu is the strong and prosperous stem for the day stem Ding. The wood of the hour Yin is the place of growth for the fire of Ding. During the day, the White Tiger is on the禄神 (prosperous stem), and at night, the White Tiger is on theGrowth (growth). Both auspicious spirits are suppressed by malevolent generals. The final transmission, the earth branch Chou, is both in the旬空 (empty period) and is a spirit that drains the energy of the day stem. Thus, there is both alarm and danger, followed by loss and depletion. If there are any plans or aspirations, they will be in vain, with no clear direction or understanding.

The textbook suggests that the situation indicates gradual retreat, but the final transmission coincides with the旬空, meaning there is no further retreat possible, and it is actually favorable to advance. However, since the旺禄 is present on one's own, one should still be cautious and maintain the current state, as any reckless action may lead to misfortune. Although the final transmission is both empty and detached, it fortunately falls in the long life position, meaning that although things may be troublesome, they will eventually succeed. The only drawback is that it is not perfect.

Heavenly conditions: Fire is above and water is below, and the three transmissions all nourish the day stem. This indicates a wind but no rain. For the household: The house is occupied by the Azure Dragon both day and night. The Azure Dragon both drains the day stem and the day branch, indicating expenses due to celebrations. For official rank: There is only the禄神 (favorable official) but no官星 (official star), so the fortune for fame is not entirely auspicious. For seeking wealth: The wealth element does not appear in the course or transmission, so it cannot be obtained. For marriage: It is favorable for the man if the woman divines. For pregnancy and childbirth: The fetus is male and delivery is easy, but the stem and branch mutually harm each other, leading to some minor misfortune.

Disease: The spleen earth is injured; when the month of May arrives, when fire is strong and generates earth, the illness will be cured. Loss: Hurry to search for it and it can still be recovered. Travel: Travel by water route day and night is possible, but it will cost more, and it is still better to stay at home. Traveler: Has not yet started the journey. Capture: If divined during the day, search for people in the southwest direction where they eat; if divined at night, search in the northern direction at the nobleman's house. Military conflict: If divined at night, it is slightly favorable; if divined during the day, it is unfavorable.

The "Bi Fa Fu" says: When a person's day stem's禄 is strong and present, yet they act recklessly, it is just in vain; if the final transmission of the divination is empty and the day stem's禄 is in retreat, it is actually favorable to move forward. The "Ke Jing" explains: When the day stem's禄 is also its旺, and it is present on the day stem, one should be cautious and stay still. If one abandons this present advantage to take action, then the first transmission is Gou Chen in empty, the middle transmission is寅 wood with long life riding White Tiger, and the final transmission is a loss of energy again meeting empty, which is exactly the image of "running everywhere is worse than staying here." The "Shen Ding Jing" says: Gongcao, which is寅 wood riding White Tiger, is at the gate, indicating there will be a cat causing trouble at home, disturbing the household. The "Kuo Nang Fu" says: When wood meets Gou Chen and White Tiger, it is certain that due to the three punishments, the main beam will break. The "Yu Cheng Ge" says: When Tian Kong is used as the initiating transmission, the matter being divined lacks evidence.

On the Dingsi day, third arrangement: stem on Si

The six elements of the lesson pattern are: 'Chong Shen' (re-examination); 'Bu Bei' (incomplete four lessons); 'Jian Chuan' (intermediate transmission where the three transmissions progress by intervals); 'Ji Yin' (extreme yin where the three transmissions retreat continuously into the yin domain); 'Guasu' (the god of loneliness and destitution in power); and 'Zhu Xu' (the赘婿, the stepson). The meaning of the lesson states: the god of the day and the post-horse both appear in the transmissions; the day branch adds to the day stem, indicating mutual attachment between person and dwelling; the water of亥 is entirely depleted and powerless; and the last two noblemen meet.

The day stem is in the巳旬 and the hidden god is丁. The middle transmission is亥 water, which is theThe Post-horse for丁 day. Both丁 and itsThe Post-horse are revealed in the transmission, so movement is not possible even if one wishes to avoid it. The day branch巳 comes to join the day stem and carries the life qi, so it indicates that person and home are attached to each other. The initiating transmission god is both empty and detached, and the亥 water nobleman also falls intoKongwang. Both upper and lower are subject to defeat, with no life qi present. Although the final transmission is the combination of two nobles, there are five consecutive阴 gods coming in succession, which benefits private matters but not public ones. Even if there is a sign of movement, it cannot be expressed openly.

The divination is extremely阴 (yin), and all predictions are obscure and unclear; it is also called the intermittent transmission. The progress is very difficult. The pattern of a赘婿 (zhuexu, a dependent husband) cannot make independent decisions, and the pattern of aGuasu (guasu, a lonely host) does not reach a concrete result. Among the three transmissions, two are empty, leaving only one酉 (you, metal) that has a clear connection. Only when the divination is done at night, taking酉 as wealth and as a superior, is it considered appropriate.

Heavenly conditions: All six positions of the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions are yin, indicating dense clouds. Family residence: The atmosphere of decline and exhaustion is present, indicating a gradual decline of the family. Achievements: The Nobleman is seated on Kongwang and approaches the place of exhaustion, which is not auspicious for fame. Seeking wealth: Wealth should be obtained from the yin Nobleman. Marriage: The lesson indicates a stepson; if the woman moves to the man's side, it will be favorable. Pregnancy: When yin reaches its extreme, it turns to yang, indicating a male fetus, but with difficulty in childbirth.

Disease: The illness is in the liver and gallbladder, or perhaps in the large or small intestines. Travel: The person and the house mutually cling to each other, making it impossible to go. Traveler: Has not yet arrived. Capture: Difficult to capture. Military conflict: The situation is fearsome if it comes at night, and mobilizing troops will bring no benefit.

The *Bifa Fu* says: The daytime nobleman and the nighttime nobleman should be combined, and it is appropriate to seek the presence of both noblemen at the same time. The *Gujian* records a case: A person born in the year Dingsi, aged fifty-two, consulted about the family residence in the sixth month of the year Wushen, with the month general being Wei and the time being You. The interpreter said: The fire of Dingsi follows its own strong direction and proceeds in reverse, eventually reaching a dead and exhausted place. The卯 (Mao) on the residence and the酉 (You) in the final transmission both have the number six, indicating that the family's property will be completely lost within six years, and the population will also decrease. There is a large rotten tree in front of the house, which should be removed as soon as possible, otherwise something bad will happen—because the wood in Mao contains the wood of Yi, and there is also Tian Kong above it, indicating decay. It also said that a pigpen was built behind the building, and many pigs would harm people, causing the family's business to collapse within four years and completely ruined within six years—Si represents the back building, and Hai represents pigs (the character 'five' should be 'Si'). You is a servant, and also the death deity of the day, indicating that a servant will die in the toilet in the tenth month of the year—because Hai is the dead deity of the day Dingsi, and it is also a place of filth. All these predictions later came true.

On the fourth division of the day Dingsi, the stem is on the hour Chen.

The four categories of lesson patterns include: "Remote克制" (Yao Ke), where there is no mutualrestrain between the four lessons above and below, and the initiating transmission is determined by the day stem and a distant god mutuallyrestrain, with the other godrestrain the day stem called "Hao Shi"; "Yuan Tai", which uses the fetal god as the initiating transmission; and "Bi Kou", which uses the end of the ten-day period added to the beginning of the ten-day period as the initiating transmission. The meaning of the lesson states: daytime divination is the real cutting through the gate; a person who flees will not return; the post-horse is like an arrow on the string, the arrowhead is already in place, and once shot, it will certainly injure someone.

The Tiangang (Chen) is on top of the day stem, and the day stem belongs to Ding. During the day, the Tiangang is on the Chen earth branch and overcomes the day branch, so it is called true cutting the gate. The Ding spirit is hidden in Si, and Hai is also the post-horse. The person who has run away must have gone very far. The lesson of Hao Shi has Hai, meaning there is a horse to ride; the middle transmission also meets Shen metal, which is like equipping the arrow with an iron tip. If the arrow has a tip, how can it not end in injury?

The亥 is the last position of the current ten-day period, and寅 is the first position of the same period. The initiating transmission is formed by adding the end of the period to its beginning, forming the pattern known as "closed mouth," which symbolizes an enclosed mechanism that cannot be opened. The Azure Dragon is on the day stem, the Liu He is on the day branch, the Black Tortoise is in the middle transmission, the Ding spirit and the post-horse are both in action. When divining about fleeing, the person can go in any direction—east, west, south, or north. The overall situation indicates that going out is favorable, but staying at home is unfavorable.

Heavenly conditions: The Nobleman is present at Hai and attacks the Day Stem, while the Azure Dragon rises to the sky top, indicating a sign of heavy rain. Family affairs: The Azure Dragon and Liu He are present on the house and support the Day Branch, indicating there will be joyful events in the family. Career: The Nobleman serves as the Initiating Transmission, and the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branches together embrace the禄神, making it most auspicious for official positions. Seeking wealth: It is favorable to gain wealth from private and secret sources. Marriage: It is favorable for the male partner during the day and for the female partner during the night.

Childbirth: Conceiving a male child is considered auspicious, but the position of the fetus is not favorable and the delivery will be reversed. Disease: If divined during the day, it indicates illness of the lung meridian; if divined at night, it indicates illness of the kidney meridian, and neither will recover quickly. Travel: One can travel by water or land. Traveler: The traveler will arrive immediately. Capture: If divined during the day, the person is hidden in a ruined kiln in the southeast direction; if divined at night, the person is hidden in an empty temple to the due east. Warfare: The enemy will gain an advantage.

The *Bi Fa Fu* says that a lesson with a closed mouth should be analyzed in two different situations. The *Liu Ren Zhi Nan* records a case where the month general is taken as the rat (zi), and the time is the hour of the rabbit (mao), predicting a promotion. The interpreter said that both the heavenly stem and the month general came to be born with the day stem, so promotion was certain, and the place of appointment was likely surrounded by mountains and water. The day branch represents the place of appointment, with the tiger (yin) representing mountains and the pig (hai) representing water. It was also said that the nobleman, heavenly virtue, and the post-horse all entered the three transmissions, and the wealth hexagram, official star, and the officials of the heavenly city were all present, indicating a rapid promotion. However, the yin and yang spirits on the day stem were said to restrain the official star, so one should beware of interference from people of the Chen, Tian, and Wang families. Later, he was indeed appointed as the military commander, but soon a general of the Tian family, known as the "added note deputy general," dismissed him.

On the Dingsi day, fifth arrangement: the stem is on the卯 (Mao) position.

The four aspects of the lesson pattern include: "Remote克制" where the day stem and the remote spirit mutuallyrestrain, and when another spiritrestrain the day stem, it is called "Hao Shi"; "Qu Zhi" when the three transmissions form a wood triad with Hai, Mao, and Wei; "Li De" when the four lessons are incomplete and the yin stem of the day stem is used to initiate the transmission. The lesson meaning states: the heavenly general during the day is all earth, completely draining the energy of the day stem, yet the three transmissions are all wood, which nourish the day stem; the arrow of Hao Shi is sufficient to alarm; the final transmission returns to the position of the first transmission, with each step successivelyrestrain, injuring oneself.

The Heavenly Generals in the daytime are all of earth nature, completely dispersing the fire energy of the day stem; the three transmissions are all wood, which in turn nourish the day stem. Therefore, there is both cause for worry and cause for joy. The divination with the arrow of蒿矢 carries the post-horse, which can disturb others. Moreover, the three transmissions, from bottom to top, are successively mutually controlling:卯 controls 未, 未 controls 亥, and 亥 controls 丁. One must beware of the dangers of words undermining metal and the accumulation of feathers causing a boat to sink.

This divination lesson begins with straightness and then turns to curves. Six layers of yin spirits follow consecutively, causing all matters to become confused and unclear. It is only favorable for private affairs done in secret, and not suitable for public actions. The nobleman and the Vermilion Bird are both in a state of decline, indicating a proper time to decisively settle legal disputes. The day stem is assisted by the heavenly stem above, suggesting help from someone outside. The three transmissions all mutually generate, meaning internal plans will all go smoothly. Divination in spring is most auspicious, with nothing unfavorable. (The character '鹹' is the same as '咸', meaning all or entirely.)

Heavenly Time: The Nobleman rides the亥 water and initiates transmission, indicating that there will certainly be rain in the early morning; 亥 also transforms into the wood element, so after the wind starts, the weather will turn clear. Family Residence: The Vermilion Bird is seated at the residence position, and it steals the energy of the day stem, leading to financial loss due to verbal disputes. Achievements: The Nobleman and the official star initiate transmission together, with strong and prosperous official energy, which is an extremely auspicious sign, indicating potential for success in official matters. Seeking Wealth: The wealth energy is average, with no noticeable improvement.

Marriage: The deity on the day branch falls into an empty position, indicating an unfavorable omen for marriage. Pregnancy: The fetus is the eldest son, but has not yet reached term. Illness: A sickness in the abdomen or spleen meridian will soon be cured. Travel: Traveling by water is unfavorable, and one should beware of disputes. Travelers: They have not yet arrived. Capture: If divined during the day, the animal can be caught; if divined at night, it is difficult to capture. Warfare: If divined in spring, it is highly advantageous; if divined in autumn, it is unfavorable.

The "Bifa Fu" says: If the three transmissions mutually control each other in sequence, it indicates that one is being oppressed by many people. The "Ke Jing" explains: When亥 is placed on卯, and the three transmissions successively control each other, a government official should restrain himself and beware of a collective petition against him by ministers in the court. The "Zhipang Fu" says: When亥, 未, and卯 form the three transmissions, it is called "Zhuannlun" (turning wheel), indicating a setback and returning to the original position. The "Yucheng Ge" says: When the two noblemen巳 and亥 are present, affairs tend to be fluctuating and changeable. The "Zuanyi" says: If all three transmissions are born from the day stem, all matters will succeed, with the help of many people and natural accumulation of good fortune. The "Zhonghuang Jing" says: When the post-horse meets巳 and亥, the person is on the road traveling.

On the Dingsi day, sixth arrangement: the stem is on the寅 (Yin) position.

The three types of lesson patterns are: 'Involvement in Harm' which compares the depth of harm caused by the four lessons, where both upper and lower lessons have arestrain relationship; 'Degree of Misfortune' which refers to the elder god bullying the younger god; and 'Four Absolute Destinations' where all four lessons are in a state of绝地. The lesson meaning states: In the night, the nobleman of酉 metal overcomes the long life of寅 wood; although亥 water can nourish寅, its strength is extremely weak; if the divination is done in autumn during the day, one should beware of fire calamities; the three transmissions mutually self-punish.

The wood of寅 is the place of growth for the fire of丁. Now the metal of酉 is sitting on top of寅 and is restraining it, thus the growth is ruined by the nobleman at night. The nobleman during the day is the water of亥, which is the official ghost of丁 fire. Although it can nourish寅, it is situated on the prison of辰, and there is no life qi. The water of子 in the day branch is riding on the Teng Snake, and it is both harming the house and the day stem. In autumn, the water of子 also acts as the official ghost of fire, so one must be careful of disturbances from fire and candles. Each of the three transmissions carries a punishment, and the person divining is prone to arrogance. It is most suitable to be humble and yield, in order to preserve one's good reputation in the end.

The divination indicates that the elder will oppress the younger, and the one in a lower position will find it difficult to settle. However, the night noble is both restrained and requires to generate the寅 wood, suggesting that the elders may also face illness or disputes. The day stem and day branch interact in a way that forms the six harms, indicating mutual suspicion. The day stem is solid while the day branch is empty, leading to inharmonious human relations, which is an omen of people being strong but the dwelling place weak.

Wealth: Divining in autumn indicates a strong prosperity in wealth, and one can gain wealth from the Nobleman. Marriage: Divining at night is favorable for the male party.

Travel: Traveling by land is auspicious, but traveling by water is not good. Travelers: They have not yet set out. Capture: Be cautious of the police letting go of suspects secretly. Warfare: It is advisable to stop in the middle of the battle.

The "Bifa Fu" states: When the Azure Dragon is over the Life Qi, auspicious events come slowly (referring to divination at night in the third month). The "Taiyi Jing" says: On the second month Dingsi day, the Heavenly General Wu is placed on the卯 (Mao), and Shenhou Zi is placed on the巳 (Si). The巳 belongs to fire, and Shenhou belongs to water; water harms fire. The Dingsi day also enhances the water, indicating the death of a woman. The "Yucheng Ge" states: If the day's Nobleman and night's Nobleman both appear in the Three Transmissions, or if they appear together with the Day's Virtue, it indicates disturbance of the noble or respected person. The "Zhaochan Miaoji" states: If the Three Transmissions sandwich two Noblemen and also include Heavenly Virtue, it is favorable for meeting the king, seeking favor from the noble, and traveling either south or north.

On the Dingsi day, seventh arrangement, the stem is on the Chou branch.

The three categories of the lesson pattern are: 'Reverse Chant' which refers to the conflict between the Heaven and Earth disks; 'Original Fetus' which is based on the fetal god initiating the transmission; and 'Inspiring Virtue' which is derived from the Yin spirit of the day stem initiating the transmission. The meaning of the lesson states: the earthy branch 'Chou' is both dispersing its energy and falling into emptiness, so it can only be abandoned and not held onto; the spirit 'Ding' and the post-horse alternate in arrival; if the divination is done at night, the movement comes from documents, while if done during the day, the movement comes from the nobleman.

The earth dog is a spirit that drains the energy of the fire spirit ding, and it is also in the empty position of the ten-day cycle, so it can only be abandoned and cannot be held onto. The fire spirit ding is hidden within the snake, and the horse is in the亥 position, which alternately appears in the three transmissions, so one cannot remain still even if they wish to. The middle transmission's water in the亥 position, when divined at night, is accompanied by the Vermilion Bird, and when divined during the day, it is accompanied by the Nobleman. Therefore, the reason for the movement is either due to official documents being summoned or due to the Nobleman having some ulterior motives.

Reverse Chant divination already presents a dynamic image; when combined with the Ding God and the Post-horse, movement is swift and sudden, causing no moment of peace. During the day, the Nobleman also serves as the Virtuous God, sitting at the dwelling position but simultaneously overcoming the Day Stem and Day Branch; ordinary people should worry about illness and litigation, but for officials, this becomes favorable. At night, when the亥 water is multiplied by the Vermilion Bird to attack the dwelling, one should also be cautious of fire-related disturbances.

Heavenly conditions: The heavens and earth discs are in opposition yet connected, causing unstable weather, with sudden changes from clear to rainy within a short time. Family home: Divining at night shows the Vermilion Bird approaching and attacking the house, indicating unavoidable lawsuits and misfortunes. Career: Divining during the day shows a Nobleman approaching the house, with the day stem and branch enclosing the禄神, which is an extremely auspicious sign, though it is regrettable that the term of office may not be fulfilled. Seeking wealth: Repeated efforts will ultimately be of no benefit. Marriage: Although the woman comes from a noble and distinguished family, the heavenly stem on the day is empty and detached, which still indicates an inauspicious situation.

Childbirth: It is likely a twin girl, with the mother's side solid and the fetus's side empty, indicating an unfavorable omen for childbirth. Disease: The illness affects the kidney meridian and the head and face, and there is a risk of recurring episodes. Travel: Traveling by water is favorable, but also beware of disputes over words. Travelers: They will arrive immediately. Capture: One is in the west and one is in the north, both involved in matters of adultery and theft. Warfare: Another strategy should be sought in order to achieve a favorable outcome.

The *Bifa Fu* says: If the official ghost is riding on the Heavenly General and Nobleman, it indicates that supernatural forces are causing trouble; if a god is separated from another god, one should beware of false and fraudulent matters. The *Ke Jing* explains: When the day stem goes to generate the upper god, and the upper god of the earth branch also goes to generate the Heavenly General Tai Yin, this is called "double separation." In all divinations, things are gradually leaked and become hollow and not genuine. It also says: If the official ghost rides on the Heavenly General and Nobleman and is located on the house, it must be that the family's deity image is not clean and orderly, thus causing illness. One should cultivate virtue and comfort the household deity to avoid misfortune. The *Yucheng Ge* says: If the Nobleman is on the巳 or亥, matters often change; it also says that if the Vermilion Bird harms the day branch and day stem, the family will be unsettled. The *Sancai Fu* says: When巳 or亥 and the Post-horse are together, a person is constantly traveling.
