Star Chart

The twenty-eight mansions of the constellations are the same in ancient and modern times.

The Azure Dragon constellation consists of seven stars.

The Horn mansion has two stars, covering the Yellow Path's twelve degrees. When measuring, the star to the left of the northernmost star is taken as the reference star for the measurement. This reference star is located ninety-one degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to the state of Zheng. Old maps recorded the southern star as being one degree within the equator, but actual measurements show that this southern star is exactly on the equator. The Neck mansion has four stars, with the second star from the west serving as the reference star, located eighty degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to the state of Zheng. Old maps recorded the second southern star as being outside the equator, but actual measurements show it is two degrees inside the equator. The Root mansion has four stars, covering fifteen degrees, with the southern-western star serving as the reference star, located ninety-four degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to the state of Song; the star configuration and degrees of this mansion are the same as recorded in ancient times.

The constellation Room Mansion has four stars, with two additional stars called Hook and Key, covering a total of five degrees. The star used as the reference point is the second star in the southwest direction, located 180 degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Song. This has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern sources. The constellation Heart Mansion has three stars, which have been recorded the same way in ancient and modern sources, covering five degrees. The reference star is the first one, located 180.5 degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Song. The constellation Tail Mansion has nine stars, with one additional star called God's Palace, covering eighteen degrees. The reference star is the second star in the constellation, located 124 degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Yan. Old maps recorded it as 120 degrees from the north celestial pole, and also mentioned three stars in the Milky Way. However, according to current measurements, it is 124 degrees from the north celestial pole, with six stars in the Milky Way. There is also another star near the reference star, which was not recorded in old maps. The ancient text "Classic Commentary" says: "One star called God's Palace is located near the second star of the Tail Mansion, governing the inner chamber where clothes are removed." Since the ancient commentary mentions this, it is now included. As for the section of the Milky Way, upon careful examination, its curved and broken parts differ from the old maps. All of these are corrected according to current observations. The constellation Winnowing Basket Mansion has four stars, covering eleven degrees. The reference star is the one in the northwest, located 124 degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Yan. Old maps said all four stars were within the Milky Way. However, upon examining the actual celestial phenomena, the two southern stars are outside the Milky Way, and the section of the Milky Way also differs from the old maps. All of these are corrected according to current observations.

The Northern Black Tortoise consists of seven stars.

The Southern Dipper has six stars, covering twenty-six and a quarter degrees. The fourth star in the southern part of the Dipper's handle is used as the reference star, located one hundred and sixteen degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to Wu. Old maps stated that the second star of the Dipper's handle was within the Yellow Path, and that two stars of the Dipper's handle were outside the Milky Way; however, actual measurements show that star is outside the Yellow Path, and there are four stars of the Dipper's handle outside the Milky Way. The Bull has six stars, covering eight degrees. The central star is used as the reference star, located one hundred and ten degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to Wu. Old maps said that two stars on the southern side had already entered the degrees of the Southern Dipper, and another star was within the degree of the Bull; but when observing the sky, these three stars are all within the degree of the Bull, and they have never entered the degree of the Southern Dipper. Old maps also recorded that it was one hundred and sixty degrees from the north celestial pole, but actual measurements show it is one hundred and ten degrees.

The constellation Su Nu consists of four stars, covering twelve degrees, and this has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times. It is located 160 degrees away from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Zhao. The constellation Xu Su consists of two stars, covering ten degrees, and this has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times. The southern star is used as the reference star, and it is located 140 degrees away from the north celestial pole, with its territory corresponding to the state of Qi. The constellation Wei Su consists of three stars, with an additional four stars representing tombs, covering seventeen degrees, and this has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times. The southern star is used as the reference star, and it is located 99 degrees away from the north celestial pole, with its territory corresponding to the state of Qi. The constellation Ying Shi consists of two stars, with an additional six stars representing a palace, covering sixteen degrees, and this has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times. The southern star is used as the reference star, and it is located 85 degrees away from the north celestial pole, with its territory corresponding to the state of Wei. The constellation Dong Bi consists of two stars, covering nine degrees, with the southern star used as the reference star, located 86 degrees away from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the state of Wei. This has also been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times.

The White Tiger is associated with the seven stars of the western sector.

The constellation Kuí has sixteen stars, with the largest star in the southwest serving as the reference star. It is located seventy degrees from the north celestial pole and corresponds to the region of Lu. Old star charts recorded it as seventy-seven degrees from the north celestial pole, but modern measurements show it to be seventy degrees. Old charts depicted the stars evenly spaced, but when observing the sky today, the stars are unevenly distributed, and their sizes and brightness vary. The constellation Lóu is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of three stars, covering twelve degrees, with the central largest star as the reference star, located eighty degrees from the north celestial pole, corresponding to the region of Lu. The constellation Mǎo is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of seven stars, covering eleven degrees, with the first star in the southwest as the reference star, located seventy-four degrees from the north celestial pole, corresponding to the region of Zhao. The constellation Bì is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of eight stars plus one star representing the ear, covering sixteen degrees, with the first star of the left leg as the reference star, located seventy-eight degrees from the north celestial pole, corresponding to the region of Zhao. The constellation Zī is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of three stars, covering two degrees, with the star in the southwest as the reference star, located eighty-four degrees from the north celestial pole, corresponding to the regions of Jin and Wei. The seven western constellations should include the constellation Wèi, making a total of seven, but this text is missing the entry for Wèi, which is likely due to a transmission error.

The Southern Cardinal Direction, Vermilion Bird, consists of seven stars.

The East Well mansion has eight stars, with an additional star called Yu, covering a total of thirty-three degrees. The star used as the reference star is located at the southern end of the western side, and it is seventy degrees away from the north celestial pole, with its territory belonging to the state of Qin. The Star Classic says, "It is seventy degrees away from the north celestial pole." Its reference star was previously recorded within one degree of the Yellow Path in old star charts, and it was also said that all eight stars are within the Milky Way. However, when measured with the gnomon, the reference star is found to be one degree outside the Yellow Path, and there are two more stars outside the Milky Way on the western side. The Ghost mansion has four stars, covering four degrees, with the star at the southwest being the reference star, which is sixty-eight degrees away from the north celestial pole, and its territory also belongs to the state of Qin. Old star charts stated that the stars Ji Shi, Ji Bing Bo, Ji Jin Yu, which are four in total, point to the four cardinal directions of east, south, west, and north. However, in reality, the stars Ji Shi and others are all within the Yellow Path, while the four outer stars point to the four corners of northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest.

Willow Mansion has eight stars, covering fifteen degrees, with the third star from the western end serving as the reference star. This reference star is seventy-seven degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to the Zhou dynasty. The old map slightly omitted one star near the southwest mouth, but added an extra star after the eastern end tail to make up eight stars. Now, when observing the sky, there is no star after the tail; that star was originally near the mouth, and it has now been corrected. Star Mansion has seven stars, covering seven degrees, with the central bright star serving as the reference star. This reference star is ninety-one degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory belongs to the Zhou dynasty. The old map recorded it as ninety-seven degrees from the pole, and the reference star should be six degrees outside the equator, but the old map placed it one degree inside the equator. Now, actual measurements show it is ninety degrees from the pole, and this star is exactly on the equator.

The Zhang Xu mansion has been recorded the same way in ancient and modern times, consisting of six stars that cover eighteen degrees. The leading star is taken as the reference star, located ninety-seven degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the Zhou state. The Yi Xu mansion has twenty-two stars covering eighteen degrees, with the central western star taken as the reference star, located ninety-nine degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the Chu state. In old maps, the leading star was taken as the reference star, but according to the Star Classic, the central western star should be used now; actual measurements confirm this, so the central western star is taken as the reference. Among the stars, there are differences in distance and direction, either slanting or curved, slightly differing from old maps. The Chen Xu mansion has four stars, plus an additional star from Changsha and two stars from Xie, covering seventeen degrees. The western northern star is taken as the reference star, located ninety-eight degrees from the north celestial pole, and its territory corresponds to the Chu state. Old maps took the southern western star as the reference, which contradicts the original intent of the Star Classic; actual measurements show that the western northern star must be used to obtain the accurately transmitted degree measurement. As for the central reference stars, they all fall outside the equator.

The Heavenly Mandate, consisting of nine stars, lies east of the chain of stars known as Guansuo. Previously, it was mapped to be within the degrees of the Tail Mansion and the Winnowing Basket Mansion. However, recent observations show that the three eastern stars have entered the degrees of the Dipper Mansion, close to the Weaving Woman. The Weaving Woman, as recorded both anciently and modernly, is the three stars located at the eastern end of the Heavenly Mandate stars. The Heavenly Market Enclosure consists of twenty-two stars, located at the northeastern end of the Room Mansion and the Heart Mansion. Previously, the eastern section of the enclosure was said to extend from the first to the fifth star of the Southern Gate, all lying outside the equator. However, recent observations show that only the stars from the Gate Head to the third star lie outside the equator, while the rest are within the equator. Additionally, the second and sixth stars of the eastern section are actually located within the Milky Way. Previously, these were not included in the Heavenly Market Enclosure. Upon further examination of the course of the Milky Way, it differs by one position from the old map, and now it is properly included within the Heavenly Market Enclosure.

The position of Dou consists of five stars, located to the southwest of Huan Zhe; in old illustrations, the mouth of the Dipper is drawn facing upwards, with its back facing the Hu Xing, but when observing the heavens today, the mouth of the Dipper is facing downwards, covering the Hu Xing. The position of Zong Zheng is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of two stars located to the southeast of Di Zuo. The position of Zong Ren was originally depicted outside the Milky Way in old illustrations, but in reality it is within the Milky Way, consisting of four stars located to the east of Zong Zheng. The position of Zong Xing was originally drawn with two stars far apart in old illustrations, but actual measurements show the two stars are close together, consisting of two stars located to the north of Zong Ren. The position of Dong Xian is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of four stars located to the northeast of Fang Su.

In total, four stars are located northwest of the Room mansion. The Heavenly River, as recorded both in ancient and modern times, consists of four stars located north of the Tail mansion. The Construction Stars, according to old maps, five stars were within the Yellow Path, and another star was said to be outside the Yellow Path; now actual measurements show six stars are all within the Yellow Path, and they have never entered the Milky Way. In total, six stars are located north of the Southern Dipper.

In the old maps, the stars were all drawn uniformly in size and distance, and depicted as bowing downward. However, actual measurements show that the stars are scattered with varying sizes and distances, and their bowing posture is actually facing upward. Also, the section of the Milky Way differs from the old maps. There are nine stars located north of the Jian Star. The River Drum (Heavenly River Drum) was previously depicted as three stars of the Drum and six stars of the Flag all within the Milky Way, and the four stars south of the Flag were said to be outside the equator. However, actual observations show that only the northern star of the Drum and the three stars of the Flag are within the Milky Way, and only three stars south of the Flag are outside the equator. Observing the direction of the Milky Way, it differs by one position from the old map. The Drum and the Flag together consist of twelve stars, located north of the Cow Star.

The star cluster Li Zhu was previously mapped within the Girl Mansion, and depicted as arranged horizontally to the north of it. However, current observations show it located within the Ox Mansion, and arranged vertically to the northwest of the Girl Mansion. It consists of five stars, positioned to the northwest of the Girl Mansion. The star cluster Pao Gua was previously said to be entirely within the Milky Way, and also near Tianjin. However, current observations show it located outside the river, far from Tianjin. Looking at that section of the Milky Way, it is also different from the old map. It consists of five stars, positioned north of Li Zhu. Tianjin was previously mapped entirely within the Emptiness Mansion, still arranged vertically, with only two stars outside the river. However, current observations show it pointing from northwest to southeast, crossing into the degrees of the Ox Mansion, the Girl Mansion, and the Emptiness Mansion, with six stars outside the river. Looking at the Milky Way, there are breaks and bends, all different from the old map. It consists of nine stars, located to the north of the Emptiness Mansion, right in the middle of the Milky Way.

Fu lu, the records from ancient and modern times are the same, one star, located beside ge dao. Tian da jiangjun, according to old diagrams, the stars were drawn evenly and round, curving upwards; but now actual measurements show the stars are uneven and not uniform. In total, there are eleven stars, located to the north of Loushu. Daliang, the records from ancient and modern times are the same, eight stars, located to the north of Weishu. Tian chuan, according to old diagrams, there were four stars outside the river, but now they are actually within the river. In total, there are nine stars, located to the north of Daliang, within the Milky Way.

The Southern River and Northern River consist of two groups: the Southern River was previously located within the Milky Way, with two stars said to be in the section of Shicheng (one of the twelve divisions of the sky), which is adjacent to Chenshen. However, current observations show that they are not within the Milky Way nor in the section of Shicheng, but rather outside the Milky Way and in the section of Chenshen that follows. The Northern River was previously located in the section of Chenshen, but current observations show that two stars are in the section of Shicheng that precedes it. Together, the two rivers have six stars, arranged on both sides of the East Well. The Five Lords, previously depicted with the first star on the eastern end located outside the Yellow Path, are now observed to be within the Yellow Path by four degrees. Additionally, the second star on the eastern end was previously drawn bending southward, but now it bends northward and is close to the third star. Together, these five stars are located north of the East Well, near the Northern River.

There are two stars, Accumulated Water and Accumulated Firewood, each consisting of one star. Previously, they were located in the position of the鹑首 (Hare's Head), but now they are both in the position of 实沉 (Real Stillness). Accumulated Water is one star located to the northwest of the Northern River; Accumulated Firewood is one star located to the southeast of Accumulated Water. For the water position, previously it was said that two stars were located within the Milky Way to the south, but now four stars are all located outside the Milky Way. In total, there are four stars, positioned east of the East Well mansion, aligned in a north-south line. The轩辕 (Venus) constellation, previously depicted with its tail gradually pointing upward, and the right angle within the Yellow Path; now actual measurements show the tail trends westward, with the left angle located half a degree outside the Yellow Path, and not within the Yellow Path. In total, there are seventeen stars, positioned to the north of the large star of the Star Mansion. The 少微 (Little Delicate) constellation is the same as the old description, with four stars, located to the west of the Taiwei Enclosure, aligned in a north-south line.

The Taiwei Enclosure, as recorded both in ancient and modern times, consists of ten stars located to the north of the Wing and Chariot Mansions. The Yellow Emperor's Seat: in old illustrations, the four stars representing the Four Emperors were depicted at equal distances from the Yellow Emperor's Seat, but in actual measurements, they vary in distance and are not uniform. The Yellow Emperor's Seat is a single star located within the Taiwei Enclosure; the Four Emperors are four stars arranged on either side of the Yellow Emperor's Seat. The Inner Screen, as recorded both in ancient and modern times, consists of four stars located to the south of the Yellow Emperor's Seat. The Officer's Position, in old illustrations, was drawn with a neat and symmetrical arrangement, but in reality, the positions of the stars are slanted and not evenly distributed. These fifteen stars are located to the northeast of the Emperor's Seat.
