The mansion ofBond mansion indicates two.
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
Shi Shen said: TheBond mansion consists of three stars and spans twelve degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measure was fifteen degrees. The measurement takes the central star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, and it is located eighty degrees north of the northern celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located twelve degrees north of the Yellow Path. TheBond mansion corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to fire in autumn and winter; the original commentary notes cite Wu Xian's view that娄belongs to water. Nine chi to the south of the娄宿 is the central path where the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes: the territory of the娄宿 is in the state of Lu. TheZuo Zhu Qi says: the娄宿 governs parks and livestock breeding, and the star god is named Ji Fang, with the surname Tai Wei. TheHuangdi Zhan says: the娄宿 governs ancestral temples and the five regular sacrifices; it is also known as 'Tian Fu', which oversees the great sacrificial offerings used in the suburban sacrifices.
The Western Palace Observations state:Bond mansion is also called "Mimilitary," "National Market," and "Heavenly Temple." The group of stars known as Kulu is a celestial chariot that carries grain, and it governs matters of gathering people. The wood associated with it is pillar wood, and the products associated are lead, tin, silver, gold, and jade. The Sacred Harmony Symbol says: The meaning of娄 is to gather people. The Chapter Commentary on the Filial Classic says:娄 is the market. Wu Xian says:娄 is the heavenly prison. Xi Meng says: Whenever there are matters of gathering people, one should consult the娄 star. The Sea Divination says: When the Son of Heaven practices filial piety earnestly, the娄 star becomes bright and large, and the world is at peace.
Xi Meng said: If the stars of Lou Xu are arranged in a straight line, it indicates that someone holding the king's mandate is gathering together to form a faction, causing great unrest in the state; another interpretation says that if the stars are bright and large, the collection of taxes will be in accordance with the proper season. The "Xuan Ming Zhuan" says: When the stars of Lou are bright, the king will perform the sacrificial rites at the outskirts of the capital, and the heavens will accept the offerings; the Son of Heaven is wise and virtuous, ministers are numerous and loyal, the king's descendants are numerous, and the world is peaceful. If the stars of Lou are not bright and large, but small and lose their original color, it indicates that the five sacrificial rites have been neglected. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The star of Lou governs the royal parks and livestock, providing the necessities for sacrifices, so the stars called "Heavenly Granary" are set beside it to raise livestock. The star of Lou governs the royal parks and livestock, implying the meaning of gathering and storing, and this is carried out in the spring season.
The Stomach mansion is associated with the number three.
Shi Shen said: The Stomach Mansion consists of three stars and spans fourteen degrees. The original commentary notes that in ancient times the measure was eleven degrees. The measurement takes the star in the southwest as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian. It is located eighty-two degrees south of the north celestial pole, twelve degrees north of the Yellow Path. The Stomach Mansion corresponds to wood in spring and summer, and to water in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the Stomach Mansion belongs to metal. Nine chi to the south of the Stomach Mansion is the central path of the sun and moon and the five planets. The original commentary notes that the territory of the Stomach Mansion is in the State of Zhao. The Huainanzi and Hongfan Zhuan say it belongs to the State of Wei. The Zuo Zhu Qi says: The Stomach Mansion governs the granary, and the star god is named Ji Lan, with the surname Yan Gu Bai. The Xi Guan Hou says: The Stomach Mansion is also called "Tianzhongfu" and "Miguan," governing military affairs and funeral matters. The original commentary notes that it belongs to metal.
The Shengqie Fu says: The stomach is the granary. The Xiaojing Zhangju says: The stomach is the treasury. The Records of the Grand Historian, Tian Guan Shu says: The stomach is the celestial treasury. The Bai'er Shi Zhan says: The stomach is the Treasury Star and Command Star, which is a place of storage. Xi Meng says: Whenever there is a plan to build granaries, one should consult the mansion of the stomach. The Twenty-Eight Mansions Mountains Jing says: The mountain corresponding to the mansion of the stomach, the Gaishi Mountain, and the mountain corresponding to the mansion of the Hairy Head, the Maoshan, extend eastward to connect with the mountain corresponding to the mansion of the Net, the Bishan, all located in the central part of the state of Zhao and Changshan. This area has the highest and most towering mountains. The celestial spirits of the mansions of the stomach, the Hairy Head, and the Net reside on these mountains year-round.
Gan De said: When the star of the Stomach mansion moves, there will be changes in transportation and conveyance. When the star of the Stomach is bright, the king will perform worship at the outskirts of the capital and gain blessings, and the whole world will be peaceful; if the star is dim, all other stars will be disordered, and lose their proper positions. The Sea Divination says: When the star of the Stomach is bright and large, the king only needs to follow proper rituals in worship, and will live long and have prosperous descendants. Xi Meng said: When the star of the Stomach is bright and large, granaries will be full; when the star departs from its proper position and moves, the grain in the granaries will not be distributed; when other stars gather inward, the price of grain will rise sharply, and the people will flee along the roads. The Jingzhou Divination says: When there are many stars in the Stomach mansion, grain will be stored in abundance; when there are few stars, grain will be lost. The Shi school praised: The Stomach mansion governs granaries, being the foundation of the five grains, so stars such as 'Heavenly Granary' are set around it to store grain. It also said: The three stars in the Stomach mansion govern granaries, being of yin nature and responsible for gathering and storing—note in the original text: one version says 'the accumulation of all things'—they manage the storage and preservation of grain.
The Hairy Head mansion governs four.
Shi Shen said: The mansion of Maomu consists of seven stars and spans eleven degrees. The original commentary notes that the ancient measurement was fifteen degrees. The measurement takes the southwest first star as the reference star; it reaches the meridian first, and is located seventy-four degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is located four degrees north of the Yellow Path. The mansion of Maomu corresponds to fire in spring and summer, and to metal in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's saying that Maomu belongs to fire. Nine chi to the south of Maomu is the middle path of the sun and the five planets. The original commentary notes that the territory of Maomu belongs to the state of Zhao; the Huainanzi says it belongs to the state of Wei. The Zuo Zhu Qi says: Maomu governs judicial punishment, and the star god is named Ao, surnamed Jin, also known as Zhao Sheng from the state of Song. The Xi Guan Hou says: Maomu is also called 'Wu', 'Tianchu', and 'Tianlu', and is the star of the Hu people, governing military affairs and mourning; if one of its stars disappears, there will be military affairs in the country, and it belongs to the element of water.
Gan De said: "Ao is the grassy thicket, taking the meaning of gathering together." Xi Meng said: "Among the stars of Ao, there is a particularly large star called Huang Xing; when this star is bright, the world is at peace; when it is dim, the world faces great calamity." Wu Xian said: "The stars of Ao and Dong Jing are the ears and eyes of Heaven." The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" said: "The star of Ao is the heavenly prison; the king, following the will of Heaven, uses it to properly handle lawsuits and restrain licentiousness and extravagance. This star should not be bright; if it is bright, there will be many people imprisoned throughout the land." The "Chun Qiu Wei" said: "Ao is 'Mao Tou,' located in the position of measurement of Fang Su, it is the star governing the Hu people, symbolizing something of yin nature."
The Sheng Qia Fu says: "The昴宿 governs matters concerning white-clothed people." The original book's small note cites Wu Xian's saying: "The昴宿 is an image of the gathering of white-clothed people—white-clothed people refer to those wearing mourning clothes, so it governs gatherings of funerals." It also says it governs the gathering of Hu people. The Xiao Jing Zhang Ju says: "The昴宿 is the market and the court." Xi Meng says: "Whenever there is a gathering concerning funeral matters, one should consult the昴宿 for divination." The Erya says: "The 'west land' is the昴宿; another interpretation says it is the celestial prison." Shi Shen says: "The so-called 'heavenly street' lies between the昴宿 and the Bi constellation, and it is the boundary between yin and yang, as well as the boundary of the Central Plains territory." The original book's small note cites the Tian Guan Shu, which says: "One side of the heavenly street belongs to yin and is associated with yin countries, while the other side belongs to yang and is associated with yang countries." Meng Kang explains that yin refers to the southwest corner, that is, the states north of the Yellow River and the Hua Mountains; yang refers to the states south of the Yellow River and the Hua Mountains.
The Yuan Ming Bao says: When the imperial throne is bright, the star of Mao宿 shines brightly. Gan De says: When the star of Mao宿 is bright, there will be many people committing crimes and facing legal punishment; when the star of Mao宿 wavers, there must be a case of high officials being imprisoned; it also says there will be gatherings of mourning; it also says when the star of Mao宿 becomes large and keeps jumping, and the seven stars all jump, the army of the Hu people will rise in great force, and it will come true within the same year; it also says when a large star in Mao宿 jumps while the other stars remain still, it is a sign that the Hu people intend to invade the border, and the time of this event will be within one year, or possibly up to three years.
Xi Meng said: The star of Maomu is bright and large, indicating fair handling of prison affairs; when all the stars of Maomu are bright and their brightness matches that of Kuai Star, it signifies great flooding across the land. The seven stars of Maomu are the starting point of the Yellow Path. If one star among the Maomu stars disappears, it indicates much warfare and loss. The "Five Officials Book" says: When the White Emperor of the West exercises virtue, the constellations of Bi and Maomu will be surrounded by a luminous aura; if this surrounding lasts for three nights, the virtue will be completed; if it does not last for three nights, or if the surrounding aura does not close properly, the virtue will not be completed. The "Shi School Commentary" says: Maomu governs judicial affairs and the management of prisoners, so it has the stars of "Juantie" around it to handle doubtful cases carefully. Maomu governs prison affairs, handling all matters of detention, oppression, and immorality, transforming and judging crimes, ensuring that the punishment is appropriate.
The Net mansion governs five.
Shi Shen said: The constellation Bi Xu consists of eight stars, with an additional star called "Fu Er" — the original commentary notes that "Fu Er" is associated with listening and observing. This constellation spans seventeen degrees. The original commentary notes that in ancient measurements it was fifteen degrees. The measurement takes the first star of the left arm as the reference star; it is the first to reach the meridian, located seventy-eight degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is located more than six degrees south of the Yellow Path. In spring and summer, Bi Xu corresponds to metal; in autumn and winter, it corresponds to water. The original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that Bi Xu belongs to fire and Fu Er belongs to water. Seven chi to the north of Bi Xu is the central path for the movement of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes that the territory associated with Bi Xu is the State of Zhao. When the king travels, someone carries a long-handled Bi net in front to clear the way, which is derived from this constellation. Another interpretation says that Bi Xu resembles a prison cart; today's term "yan mian" refers to covering with a net, so Bi Xu also takes this meaning, hence it is associated with hunting small animals such as mice. The bright star in the constellation is called "Tian Gao." Another interpretation says it symbolizes a border general, serving as a lookout beyond the national borders. The "Huainanzi" says: the territory associated with Bi Xu belongs to the State of Wei.
The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: The constellation Bi governs border defense and military affairs, and its star deity is named Fu Gu, with the surname Chuan'er Hou. Huang Fu Mi says: Bi is also called "Tian'er" (Heaven's Ear), "Tianmu" (Heaven's Eye), and "Fengkou" (Wind Mouth). The "Xiguan Hou" says: Bi is also called "Zhu" (Mud), "Tian Gang" (Heavenly Gang), and "Tian Duwei" (Heavenly Deputy Commander), and it oversees military discipline and observes the four directions. The "Sheng Qia Fu" says: Bi is responsible for promoting military might; another account says it is the Qingchi Palace. The "He Tu" (Yellow River Chart) says: Bi is the same as Tian Gang. The "Xiaojing Zhangju" says: Bi is the court. Wu Xian says: Bi is the Heavenly Prison.
Xi Meng said: The mansion of Bi is in charge of Huashan and the area south of the Yellow River in the Central Plains; the Central Plains is located in the southeast within the four seas, belonging to yang. Since it belongs to yang, it is under the jurisdiction of the year star, the planet of fire, and the planet of filling. When making predictions, one should look at the celestial region south of the celestial street. The "Spring and Autumn Wei" says: The mansion of Bi is also called "Hanche," in charge of border defense forces and hunting; since the yang energy is still weak and needs to be controlled, a star called Fu'er is set beside the main star, specifically responsible for monitoring disturbances in the world and the treachery of ministers causing chaos in the state. The "Spring and Autumn Wei" also says: Bi is the celestial street at the border, in charge of guarding against foreign states, so the star Fu'er is set to hear of ominous events. Xi Meng said: Whenever there is an event of hunting, one should consult the mansion of Bi for divination.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The large star in the left leg of the Net mansion symbolizes the border general, governing the various tribes of the northern barbarians, serving as the watchmen for the emperors of successive dynasties to observe beyond the frontier; if the states rebel, this star shines with a bright芒角. This star is good when it is bright; brightness indicates that distant夷人 will come to pay homage. If it loses its original color and becomes dimmer than before, the border will become chaotic on its own, and the Central Plains will not enjoy peace. Heaven uses the Net mansion to punish, to eliminate villains, to pacify and connect with the outside world. The Western Officials' Divination says: The large star of the Net mansion is the border general; if this star moves and produces apointed rays, the border general will face urgent difficulties.
The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" states: The constellation Bi governs hunting, belonging to a yang state; the constellation Mao belongs to a yin state. When the sun and moon and five stars pass through the territory of a yang state, there will be water disasters; when they enter the territory of a yin state, there will be droughts, and the ruler's moral teachings will not be effectively implemented. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: If the state under its jurisdiction rebels, the star Bi will shine with a bright edge. The "Yuan Ming Bao" says: When the star Bi shines brightly and its color and degree are harmonious, the world will be peaceful and the state's fortune will be endless. Xi Meng says: If the star Bi wavers, there will be slanderous ministers in the court; if one star in the constellation Bi disappears, it signifies mourning, another interpretation suggests military affairs; if the central star in the constellation Bi deviates from its position, there will be internal turmoil, one interpretation suggests the country lacks a ruler. If the star Bi is bright and large, then regardless of distance, the barbarians will come to the court to pay homage; if the constellation Bi moves away from its position, the world will experience great chaos in lawsuits; if all the stars gather inward, the laws and regulations will be extremely strict; if the star is bright, the world will be peaceful; if the star is dim, there will be people plotting rebellion.
The "Catalogue of Stars" says: When the star of Bi moves, there will be military affairs in the border cities. Shi Shen says: Fu'er is attached to the Bi mansion, specifically responsible for guarding and watching the heavenly street, and detecting evil deeds. Wu Xian says: Fu'er is the official in charge of fire. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: When Fu'er shakes, there will be hunting activities. The "Luo Writing" says: When Fu'er sprouts芒角 and moves, people who spread slander and cause harm will arise. The "Spring Annals' Brocade" says: When Fu'er is bright, bandits will be active. The original book's marginal note cites Song Jun's comment: This refers to the power of bandits being strong. The central plains are declining, border garrisons are alarmed, foreign states are fighting year after year, generals are captured, and the ruler suffers defeat and loses territory. When Fu'er shakes but does not stay in its proper position, it indicates that there are rebellious ministers close to the ruler; another interpretation suggests it indicates worry. The "Commentary on the Analects" says: When Fu'er is bright, thieves will run rampant.
Xi Meng said: When the ear-like star enters the mouth of the Net mansion, and is aligned with one star, the event will occur in forty days; with two stars, in thirty days; with three stars, in twenty days; with four stars, in ten days; with five stars, in seven days; and with six stars, in three days — all indicate military action. When the ear-like star enters the Net mansion, it signifies military calamity; if it penetrates deeply and the ear-like star contracts and twists, then the royal decree will be issued, and the minister will emerge to take office. If the ear-like star moves, military affairs will greatly increase, and warfare on the borders will be especially severe. The Shi school praised: The Net mansion governs the border army, guarding against the schemes of the barbarians, so it has the "Heavenly Bow" stars set beside it to shoot and repel them. The Net mansion is the heavenly thoroughfare, governing border troops, defending the borders, and observing acts of violence. The movement of the ear-like star indicates that wicked ministers will act unchecked.
The觜 and觽 stars are used for divination in the six directions.
Shi Shen said: The Zi Xu constellation consists of three stars and spans only one degree. The original commentary notes that the ancient measurement was six degrees. The measurement takes the star in the southwest as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, and is located eighty-four degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is more than twelve degrees south of the Yellow Path. In spring and summer, Zi Xu corresponds to water; in autumn and winter, it corresponds to earth. The original commentary cites Wu Xian's statement that Zi Xu belongs to metal. Three chi to the north of Zi Xu is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes that the territory corresponding to Zi Xu is in the regions of Jin and Wei. The Huainanzi says it belongs to the state of Zhao. The Xi Guan Hou says: Zi Xu governs execution and removal. Its left foot is named 'White Tiger General' and 'Heavenly General', symbolizing the punishment of axes and halberds. The head of the White Tiger governs armies outside the borders, corresponding to Liang in the outside and Wei in the inside. The associated wood is Yang, and the associated products are coins, metal objects, and alum stone, belonging to the metal element.
The Shengqia Fu says: Zi Zhu and Shen Fa are the bridges of the Heavenly Market. Shi Shen says: Zi Zhu is within the realm of Liang land, and outside it governs the areas of Ba and Han; another view says Zi Zhu is the vanguard of the three armies. Wu Xian says: Zi is treasure, also called Tianhuo. The Records of the Grand Historian, Tian Gao Shu says: three small stars arranged in a triangle are called Zi Zhu, which is the head of the White Tiger, governing matters of 'Bao Lu'. The original commentary cites Ru Chun, who says: in the Guanzhong region, the local term for herbs growing naturally between mulberry and elm trees is 'Bao'; Jin Zhu says: 'Bao' refers to vegetables, and wild ones are called 'Lu'—together they refer to wild herbs and vegetables.
The *Lie Xu Say* states: When the stars of the Turtle Beak mansion move, wild grasses and vegetables will proliferate; whenever there is an occasion for gathering or traveling, one should consult the stars of the Turtle Beak mansion. The *Twenty-Eight Mansions Mountain Classic* says: The mountain corresponding to the Turtle Beak mansion and the mountain corresponding to the Three Stars mansion are connected, located in the southwest of the Tian Mountains in the state of Wei, with the star spirits of the Turtle Beak and Three Stars mansions residing on the mountain all year round. Gan De says: The three stars of the Turtle Beak mansion are the granaries for military campaigns; these stars are favorable when bright, as brightness indicates abundant state resources and military supplies; if the stars are dim, it is not advisable to send troops or appoint generals, otherwise the soldiers will have no food. When the king is about to go to war, he must first observe these stars.
The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" says: The Zi Xu star is also called the Great Goose. When this star is bright, thieves will be numerous. Shi Shen says: When the Zi Xu star moves and shines brightly, bandits will rise up and thieves will appear in groups. Xi Meng says: When the Zi Xu star approaches the left leg of the Can Xu constellation, it indicates that ministers may plot against their sovereign, or that someone may falsely claim the sovereign's command to seize the sovereign's treasury; when it approaches the right leg, it indicates that high officials may plot to attack their sovereign, or that a major imperial decree will be issued. When the Zi Xu star is bright, generals will gain power. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The Zi and Can constellations oversee the gathering of wild plants and herbs, which are matters of collection, so stars such as Fen and Fa are placed beside them to assist.
The Three Stars mansion governs the number seven.
Shi Shen said: The mansion of Sanxiu consists of ten stars and spans ten degrees. The original commentary notes: This is consistent with the ancient measure. The measurement takes the star slightly west of the center as the reference star, which reaches the meridian first, located about ninety-four and a half degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: It is located about twenty-three and a half degrees south of the Yellow Path. The mansion of Sanxiu corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to earth in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view, stating that Sanxiu belongs to metal. Thirteen feet to the north of Sanxiu is the central path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes: The territory corresponding to Sanxiu is in the regions of Jin and Wei. The Zuo Zhuan records Zi Chang's words: In the past, the high emperor Gaoxin had two sons, the elder named Yebó and the younger Shishen, who did not get along and fought with weapons against each other; the commentary explains that 'xun' means to use weapons. The text says 'hou di bu zang', and the commentary explains 'hou di'—the original text reads 'ke', which should be a mistake for 'Yao'. The text also says: Yebó was moved to Shangqiu and was entrusted with the worship of Dachen; the commentary says that Shangqiu is the later Shang state, and what it worships is the star of Chen, the Great Fire. The text also says: The Shang people continued this worship, so Chen is also called the Shang star; Shishen was moved to Daxia and was entrusted with the worship of Sanxiu. The Huainanzi Honglie says: The territory corresponding to Sanxiu belongs to the state of Zhao.
The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: The groups of stars Shen and Fa are in charge of cutting off and executing, and the star deity is named Xu Tu, with the surname Zu Ji. The "Huang Di Zhan" says: The Shen star corresponds to seven generals; the central three small stars are called "Fa," which are the heavenly magistrates, in charge of the Hu, Xianbei, Rong, and Di nations, so they do not wish for them to be bright. The "Xiao Jing Zhang Ju" says: Shen and Fa are the market and the government hall, and also the heavenly magistrates. Wu Xian says: Shen is the measure. Shi Shen says: Shen and Fa are also known as "Zhong Long."
The Records of the Grand Historian: Book of Celestial Officials says: The star cluster known as Shen is the White Tiger, and the three stars arranged in a straight line are called the Scale and Balance. Below and to the right, there are another three stars arranged diagonally, called 'Fa'. The original commentary cites Jin Zhuo from the Jin dynasty, saying that stars arranged diagonally are called 'Rui'. Shen governs matters of execution and elimination; its four outer stars are the shoulders and thighs of the White Tiger. Shen is also called 'Fa', 'Da Chen', 'Tian Shi', 'Fu Yue', and is also regarded as the Celestial Prison. The Essentials of Comets and Divination says: Shen is the celestial market, Fa is the celestial commander and also the celestial chariot and cavalry; it is in harmony with stars such as Tianlang and Yaji, and is the scout sent by heaven to Shu, governing the southern barbarian states, or alternatively, the state of Jin.
The *Yulü* says: The central star of the Three Stars mansion governs longevity, the star on the left governs the Left Minister of War, and the star on the right governs the Right Minister of War; the left arm governs the Heavenly Gate, and the right arm governs the Heavenly Prison. The *Xiguan Hou* says: The large star on the left of the Three Stars mansion is the Left General, the large star on the right is the Right General, the three central stars are the Three Generals, and the other three small stars are the minor generals; they govern the rulers of the Hu, Xianbei, and the wild lands of Yueshi. When these stars move, war will break out. The *Shengqia Fu* says: The Three Stars mansion is the mansion of the White Tiger; when the tiger's foot extends into the Well mansion, it is called "tāo zú" (treading), and the tiger is unable to move, so there will be no warfare in the world; when the tiger's foot extends outside the Well mansion, the tiger is free to act, causing chaos and harm, and warfare will occur in the world.
The "Ming Yuan Bao" says: The star Shen governs execution and punishment, used to carry out penalties; it also governs measurement and balance, used to make fair judgments; it also governs nine relay stations at the border, so it is not desired to move. Shen is the body of the White Tiger, with three stars aligned, symbolizing three generals; the star in the Northeast is called the Left Shoulder, governing the Left General; the star in the Northwest is called the Right Shoulder, governing the Right General; the star in the Southeast is called the Left Foot, governing the Rear General; the star in the Southwest is called the Right Foot, governing the Assistant General.
The Huangdi Zhan says: The Sanxu stars are the Right General in the heavens; they belong to the Tianshi mansion and have the nature of a strong and firm military force, like metal. Metal is strong and resolute, governing the cutting off of enemies, the establishment of order, and the execution of justice. The Sanxu correspond to seven generals. Among them, the three stars are aligned, symbolizing three main generals; the right shoulder and right foot belong to the Right General, while the left shoulder and left foot belong to the Left General. The White Tiger is easily angered, and there is a well star beneath its left foot. When the tiger moves, it falls into the well, thus restraining its power. All seven generals' stars are bright and large, indicating the military forces of the world are strong and well-protected, guarding the emperor effectively. If their light becomes overly intense, with sharp rays spreading out and red flames shooting across, the entire army will be alarmed, and the emperor will have to personally don armor and go to battle.
Xi Meng said: The Three Stars mansion is like a horizontal scale; if the scale is not straight, the world will be overturned. The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" say: The Three Stars symbolize the general, and during the three summer months, one observes the Three Stars: if the two feet move forward, it indicates the outbreak of war; if they retreat, it signifies the cessation of war and national peace. Also, if the two stars of the Three Stars mansion shake, war will arise, and there will be worries for descendants; another interpretation suggests it indicates pests damaging crops. The "Yi Wei" says: The Three Stars mansion has no head, indicating the country's division and the excessive strength of the military. The "Sheng Qie Fu" says: The Three Stars and the Felling Star symbolize the rites and ceremonies of the crown and the measures and standards of law, representing the emperor's army. The "Chun Qiu Wei" says: When the Three Stars and the Felling Star are extinguished and cut off, it signifies ministers killing the sovereign and sons killing their fathers.
Shi Shen said: The Three Stars mansion's left foot does not extend into the Well mansion, and great military actions will arise. The Three Stars should not move; once they move, the army will launch an attack. If the stars are incomplete, the army will lose territory. If the stars lose their original color, the army will scatter and perish. If the positions of the stars are unstable and abnormal, the king's ministers will be disloyal and have their minds elsewhere. The central star of the Three Stars mansion is偏向 southern, and the Hu people will invade the border posts; when it returns to its proper position, the Hu people will withdraw.
Xi Meng said: When the Three Stars mansion shifts position, it is called "losing heaven," indicating that the guest army will attack the host country. If the star is bright and moves, it signifies the rise of a large army. When the Three Stars mansion spreads its shoulders outward and becomes larger, the military strength is strong outside; when it contracts inward and becomes larger, the military strength is strong inside. If the left leg of the Three Stars mansion disappears, military operations in the east and south should be avoided; if the right leg disappears, military operations in the west and north should be avoided. If the left foot of the Three Stars mansion enters the Jade Well star, there will be great military movements and a great flood across the land; if this is accompanied by mourning, strange phenomena will also occur in mountains and rocks.
The Three Stars mansion represents heavenly punishment and military campaigns. When the stars become bright, war is imminent. If the stars move forward or backward without stability, or if foreign stars appear nearby and flourish, it indicates severe punishment. When the Three Stars are bright, generals hold power and seize the authority of the sovereign, leading to changes in the state's affairs. If the Three Stars are dim, the generals will be ill. If the Three Stars depart from their proper position, the generals will be exiled. If all the stars gather inward, the generals will be executed. If the central star of the Three Stars is inclined to the north, the northern barbarians will retreat northward. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: if the芒 and 角 of the Three Stars shake, there will be urgent matters at the border outposts and wars will break out. If the two shoulders of the Three Stars are weak and dim, the military strength of the world will decline. Shi Shen says: the four legs of the Three Stars, if they move forward, indicate that generals will go to war; if they move backward, it means that generals will fail without success.所谓 "forward" refers to moving northward;所谓 "backward" refers to moving southward.
The Spring and Autumn Writings say: When the star of Wei produces apointed rays and emits a yellow glow, it indicates the downfall of the Son of Heaven. The Spring and Autumn Writings also say: When the dynasty's fortune lasts for several generations and then ends, the star of Wei will develop a horn. The Diagram of Harmony says: When the star of Wei develops a horn, the doors of the princes'寝宫 will be forced open. Gan De says: When the stars of Shen and Wei move, there will be acts of cutting off and killing. Wu Xian says: The star of Wei is the official of water. Xi Meng says: When the stars of Shen and Wei are bright and large, acts of killing will be carried out. The three stars of the Wei constellation, when spaced apart, indicate lenient laws, and when close together, indicate strict laws. The three stars of the Wei constellation should not be bright; if they shine as bright as the star of Shen, then all the ministers of the country will plot to leave, and the ruler may be called one who cannot govern the state. When the star of Wei becomes larger, there will be military action.
The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" states: If the star of Fa moves southward, there will be troubles in the mountain passes of the Hu lands; if it moves northward, the mountain passes of the Hu lands will also have troubles. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The stars Shen and Fa are associated with cutting and killing, and from here the Yin energy grows. Therefore, they set up the "Jade Well" stars nearby to supply the kitchen. Shen and Fa are associated with cutting and killing, breaking and damaging the Nine Provinces, and those who plot evil will ultimately bring about their own downfall. Liu Xiang's "Hongfan Transmission" says: The seven stars of the Western Dipper cover eighty-three degrees, but the current measurement is eighty degrees.
The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-Three · Divination of the Seven Southern Constellations, Part Four
The Well mansion is occupied by one.
Shi Shen said: The East Well mansion has eight stars, with an additional star called 'Yu'. This mansion spans thirty-three degrees. The original commentary notes that in ancient measurements it was twenty-nine degrees. The measurement is taken with the first star at the western end of the northern and southern yuans as the reference star; it is the first to reach the meridian, and it is located seventy degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is located two and a half degrees south of the Yellow Path. In spring and summer, the East Well mansion corresponds to fire; in autumn and winter, it corresponds to water. The original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the East Well mansion belongs to water. The sun and moon, and the five wandering stars pass through the East Well mansion, which is the central path. The territory corresponding to the East Well mansion is the state of Qin, which is now the area of Shaanxi. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The East Well mansion is the decree of the Treasury star and Command star, and also the heavenly slanderous mouth. It is also called 'East Tomb', 'Heavenly Well', 'East Well', 'Heavenly Gate', and 'Heavenly Palace'. One interpretation says it is the southern gate of heaven, the correct path for the sun, moon, and five wandering stars to travel.
If the sun, moon, and five wandering stars do not pass through the Well mansion, it is a sign that the world is disorderly. When the three luminaries pass through the Well mansion, they should not remain stagnant or linger. The Well mansion governs water, symbolizing the principle of clear and impartial governance like water. When the king maintains a just and upright heart in accordance with heavenly principles, the star of the Well mansion will move in its proper position, indicating that laws and regulations are clearly established. The four stars on the left represent the four ministers assisting the Son of Heaven, while the four stars on the right assist the Southern Red Emperor. The six stars within the Well mansion govern the officials responsible for water affairs. If these stars are bright and large, it signifies great floods.
The "Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety" says: East Well is the celestial channel. Wu Xian says: East Well is the celestial pavilion and celestial official; it also says that the constellations of Well and Ghost are the summer court of punishment. The "Broad Meaning" says: East Well is called "Chunshou." The "Jade Calendar" says: East Well is called "Tianqi." Qi Bo says: East Well is the celestial channel, governing the area of Yuan Mountain, and also serves as the market of that region. He Fa Sheng's "Explanation of Celestial Phenomena" says: Well represents the female ruler. The "One Hundred and Twenty Divination" says: East Well is the celestial pool. The "Twenty-Eight Constellations and Mountains Classic" says: The mountain of Well and the mountain of Ghost are located south of the fire mountain in the state of Qin, and the star deities of the constellations of Well and Ghost reside on the mountains all year round.
The Shengqia Fu says: The Well Mansion and the钺 star are large and bright, indicating the use of斧钺 punishment, and military actions will arise. The Yi Wei says: A bright钺 star indicates that someone will flee on their own, and the feudal lords will rebel. Shi Shen says: If the East Well star falls, great floods will arise throughout the world; if the Well star and the钺 star are out of their proper positions, the waters will spread widely. Gan De says: When the law is applied impartially and the king's heart is upright, the Well star will be bright and move in its proper position. A bright钺 star indicates that there will be many criminals among the ministers. The Hai Zhong Zhan says: The Well and钺 stars are responsible for matters of licentiousness and extravagance; this star should not be bright. If it is bright, then斧钺 will be used to execute those who deserve punishment.
Jiao Yanshou said: The Yin Benefactor star does not align with the Well mansion, indicating that there will be a minister who is executed, because it has already shown a readiness to act. Xi Meng said: The use of斧锧 (axe and iron block) signifies the rise of the king's decree, and the minister who assists will take on responsibilities. The Shi school praised: The Well mansion governs officials responsible for water balance, due to its principle of fairness; the钺 star is placed beside it to cut off excess and extravagance. The eight stars of the Well mansion govern water balance; "Well" is taken as a symbol of law and order. The law of water is level and stable, holding to its nature without excess, thus governing balance.
Divination of the Ghost Mansion II
Shi Shen said: Yu Gui consists of five stars and spans four degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was five degrees. The measurement takes the star in the southwest as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located sixty-eight degrees north of the northern celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is slightly north of the Yellow Path. Yu Gui corresponds to fire in spring and summer, and to water in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that Yu Gui belongs to earth. Six feet south of Yu Gui is the middle path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The territory corresponding to Yu Gui is the State of Qin. Xi Meng said: the arc and arrow star shoots at Tian Wang, but mistakenly hits the left shoulder of Can Xiu, so it carries the corpse upon Gui Xiu; "Gui" means "return," as death is called returning. The "Nan Gao Hou" says: Yu Gui is also called "Tian Fu Zhi" and "Tian Song," which is in charge of detecting wickedness, and is the eye of heaven.
The "Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety" says: "Yugui is the judicial system of summer; it is also the storehouse of gold and jade in the heavens; it is also called 'Tiankui' and 'Tiantuang.' When this star is bright, there will be military conflict and warfare without restraint; if the star is dim, there will be no military action, even if armies are stationed abroad, there will be no battle." The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: "The star to the south of Yugui — according to the small note, referring to the star two chi to the south — governs the accumulation of silk and cloth; the star to the west — according to the small note, referring to the star two chi to the west — governs the accumulation of gold and jade; the star to the north — according to the small note, referring to the star two chi to the north — governs the accumulation of money; the star to the east — according to the small note, referring to the star two chi to the east — governs the accumulation of horses; the central star governs the accumulation of corpses."
Shi Shen said: The star in the northeast of Gu Xiuzhu governs the accumulation of horses, the one to the east and west governs the accumulation of weapons, the one in the southwest governs the accumulation of silk and cloth, and the one in the northwest governs the accumulation of gold and jade. When these four stars undergo a change, one should predict according to the matters they govern. The mass that appears white in color and looks like powdered flour in the center is called 'Ji Shi Qi'. Yu Gui is also known as 'Tian Shi', so it governs death and mourning, as well as worship. It is also called 'Fu Zhi', so it governs legal punishment and execution.
Xi Meng said: The central cluster of Yu Gui is called "Zhi," which is the chopping block used for beheading. The bright light of the Ghost Star indicates that people visit each other and the five grains mature. The "Jade Calendar" says: Yu Gui is the heavenly corpse, located at the neck of the Vermilion Bird; when the central star appears like powdered fluff, the Ghost Mansion will cause plague and disaster. The "Southern Officials' Observations" say: Yu Gui is the heavenly temple, governing divine worship; it corresponds to the state of Qin, the wood is Yang, and the associated products are horses, cattle, sheep, and tigers.
Xi Meng said: When the Yu Gui stars are bright and large, the harvest is abundant; if they are dim, the people will scatter in large numbers; if the various stars shift position, the people will be greatly distressed and the government will impose harsh decrees. If all the Yu Gui stars are moving, and their colors are hazy and indistinct, appearing as if they have light but not clearly, it indicates that the ruler imposes heavy and frequent levies and labor services, causing the people to be deeply resentful and angry, and within five years, they will suffer death and loss of family. He also said that after such an omen appears, there will be consecutive years of great floods, especially severe in the state of Qin. Both Yu Gui and the Chi star desire to be dim and obscure; if they are not clear, there will be peace, but if they are bright, war will break out, and the use of axes and halberds will be inevitable. The Shi school praised: Yu Gui stars, when clearly visible, can detect plots, so they set up the 'Five Peers' stars beside them to investigate. The five stars of Yu Gui are responsible for discernment, observing from the dark to the bright, without missing any subtle details.
