Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The Shi school says: The five stars of Li Zhu are located north of the Niuxu mansion among the Twenty-Eight Mansions. The original commentary notes: The northernmost star of Li Zhu enters the starting degree of Niuxu, located ninety-four degrees from the north celestial pole, twenty degrees within the Yellow Path. Xi Meng says: Li Zhu is a star symbolizing women. The Shi school says: The star official Li Zhu is in charge of the 'Li Guiyi' clothing worn by the imperial harem, which is a ceremonial robe with a flowing hem; rings and jade beads are the ornamental items of the queen and her consorts; Li Zhu specifically oversees the presentation of clothing to the queen.

The Yellow Emperor said: When the stars of Li Zhu are bright and normal, the palace women, concubines, and queen mother can all live in peace and stability; if the starlight becomes dim and changes from its usual state, the palace attendants will not be at ease. The Shi school said: When Li Zhu loses its normal state, there will be disorder in the harem; if the star is inclined toward the southern yang position of Wei Su, there will be a great drought; if it is inclined toward the northern yin position of Wei Su, there will be a great flood and poor harvests of grain; when Li Zhu is bright and large, the harem will flourish; if the star's color is dim and unclear, the queen mother's power and her favored descendants will not be prominent, and those close to her will act improperly. The "Shi School Commentary" said: The five stars of Li Zhu are responsible for serving the harem.

The star named Pao Gua has twenty-seven sections.

The Shi school says: The Pu Gua star cluster consists of five stars, located to the north of the Li Zhu star. The original commentary notes: The westernmost star of Pu Gua enters the Nu Xu mansion by half a degree, is located seventy-one and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and is thirty-three degrees within the Yellow Path. The Huangdi text says: Pu Gua is also called "Tian Niao" and "Tian Ji." Among these four stars, they form the shape of a sword handle and guard (the sword tang). If these stars are bright and large, as in the past, then fruits and vegetables will bear good harvests, and the year will be bountiful. If the starlight is dim and deviates from the norm, then the fruits will not grow well, the harvest will be poor, and there will be great floods, with rivers and canals blocked.

The Shi school says: The star official Paojia is also called "Tianpao" and also called "Tianji"; the star Paojia is large in size, indicating a good harvest; its light is faint, indicating a poor harvest. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Paojia oversees matters in the harem; Paojia is Tianji, which holds the position of "Sizhong," thus being able to harmonize the five flavors of sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty. The Spring and Autumn Yuanmingbao says: Paojia oversees secret plans. Xi Meng says: Paojia is the emperor's orchard, and it is a star official responsible for presenting food. The Star Official Training says: Paojia is the great gourd; it is reserved in nature, with an elegant appearance and a full interior, containing all its beauty within.

The Yellow Emperor said: When the star cluster Pu Gua is bright, wild gourds flourish, sweet dew descends; the chef officials and female attendants in the palace have many sons and grandsons; if the starlight is dim, the queen consort will lose her power; if these stars lose their normal state, there will be mountain tremors. The Shi school said: When the Pu Gua star loses its normal state, there will be floods in the valleys and roads throughout the land will be blocked. Jiao Yanshou said: When the Pu Gua stars disappear or are crooked and unstable, it indicates someone is plotting against the king; it also indicates a poor harvest of fruits and vegetables. The Shi school praised: The Pu Gua star consists of five stars, responsible for deliberation and maintaining loyalty.

Celestial Star Divination of the Twenty-Eight Mansions

The Shi school says: The Tianjin star cluster consists of nine stars, located in the Milky Way north of the Dipper mansion. The original commentary says: The star to the northwest of Tianjin is two degrees south of the Northern Dipper, forty-nine degrees from the north celestial pole, and forty-nine degrees and a half within the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Tianjin star cluster is also called 'Tianhuang', 'Huangzhong', 'Juhuang', 'Jiangxing', 'Shuiwangzhu', 'Gexing', and 'Huangxing'; its original name is Tianjin. Within Tianjin, there are four stars called Tianhuang, located north of the Girl mansion, in the middle of the Milky Way. Xi Meng says: Tianhuang is the same as Tianjin, also called 'Tianhan'. The Spring and Autumn Yuanmingbao says: Tianhuang governs the bridge over the river, being the place where deities cross the river and connect the four directions. It also says: The Tianhuang star is the official office for the Son of Heaven to manage boats and ships.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the stars of Tianjin undergo change, thieves on the water will usurp the title of king, and water routes will be blocked. The Shi school says: If the Tianjin stars remain stationary and do not move, the river will overflow; if the Tianjin stars collapse and water flows out, there will be great floods; if the Tianjin stars disappear, the river will cause disasters, and the world's communications will be cut off. The Shi school also says: If the Tianjin stars disappear, ferry crossings and roads will be blocked; if the Tianjin stars spread out and expand, the world will be peaceful. Xi Meng says: If the stars of Tianhuang are incomplete, all ferry crossings, rivers, and passes throughout the world will be blocked. The Shi school's praise says: The nine stars of Tianjin are responsible for clearing obstructions and alleviating difficulties and poverty.

The star Tengshe occupies the second position among the twenty-nine stars.

The Shi school says: The Tengsha stars consist of twenty-two stars, located to the north of the Encampment mansion. The original book's marginal note says: The Tengsha star enters the Encampment mansion by one and a half degrees, is located fifty-one degrees from the northern celestial pole, and is thirty-five degrees and a half within the Yellow Path. Tengsha is a celestial snake, governing aquatic creatures; Tengsha is also the male of the snake species, capable of mating with turtles and tortoises, and is the leader of the aquatic creatures; all aquatic creatures are under the dominion of Tengsha.

The Yellow Emperor said: When the Tengshe stars are bright, the aquatic creatures in the water are abundant, and the prices of fish and salt are low; when the starlight is dim, the aquatic creatures decline and suffer losses, and the prices of fish and salt become high. The Shi school said: When the Tengshe star moves southward, there will be military campaigns; when it moves northward, there will be great floods; when the starlight is overly bright, the whole world will be unrest; when the starlight is faint, it will instead bring stability. The Shi Zhi Zan said: The Tengshe star official oversees the aquatic creatures in the water.

The Star Divination of Wang Liang covers thirty sections.

The Shi school says: Wang Liang and the five stars are located north of the Kuixiu mansion. The original book's marginal note says: Wang Liang is located in the Milky Way, the westernmost star entering half a degree of the Bixu mansion, at a distance of forty-two and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and fifty-seven degrees within the Yellow Path. Xi Meng says: Wang Liang is also called "Tianjin" and "Wang Ji." The original book's marginal note says: According to the "Jingzhou Divination," Wang Liang is sometimes used to predict vehicles, horses, and riders, and sometimes to predict ferries and bridges. These two characters have always been used interchangeably since ancient times, so they are retained as in the original text. The "Chunqiu Yuanmingbao" says: Four stars of Tian Qi are located in the Milky Way, also called "Tian Si." The star next to them is called Wang Liang, which governs heavenly horses. Xi Meng says: Wang Liang also has another name called "Tian Ma."

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Wang Liang is in charge of driving winds and rains and managing waterways, and also oversees bridges on rivers. The Yellow River Chart says: Wang Liang is the bridge in the heavens. Wu Xian says: Wang Liang is an official under the Son of Heaven who manages roads, bridges, and crossings of water. Xi Meng says: Wang Liang is the person who drives the Son of Heaven's chariot. Xi Meng also says: The image of Wang Liang driving horses is that the star of the whip is level with the star of the horse in front and also level with the star of the horse behind. The Jingzhou Divination says: Wang Liang is the bridge of the west, so sometimes it is used to divinate about carriages, horses, and riding, and sometimes about ferry crossings and bridges.

The Yellow Emperor says: Four horses with four stars are uneven and not aligned, indicating the world is at peace; but if the four horses move forward together, and Wang Liang raises his whip, it means the emperor himself will lead the army in battle, and the country will not be at peace. The Yellow Emperor also says: When the star Wang Liang is active, the Yellow River will flood. The Yellow River Chart says: When Wang Liang raises his whip to urge the horse, it foretells that princes and heroes will rise up together, and this will happen within nine years, with the world suffering from war. The book "Kao Lingyao" says: When Wang Liang urges the horse, the stars Tianlang and Hushiyi shine brightly, and the star Duju causes harm, with blood flowing continuously. The original commentary notes: There is a star next to Wang Liang called "Ce", so "Ce Ma" refers to this star shining. "Zhang" means bright, "Duju" is the name of a large star, and "Xue Jiangjiang" means war breaks out and many people are killed.

The Li Wei Han Wen Jia says: When the Son of Heaven travels by boat, it conforms to ritual propriety, with distinctions of rank and status properly observed, so the stars Wang Liang and Fu Lu shine brightly and remain constantly in the Milky Way. The Son of Heaven will live long, the state will flourish, and the people will not suffer from plague. The Lun Chen says: Wang Liang controls the horse, and white bones are exposed in the wilderness. The Shi school says: If the star Wang Liang moves from its position, there will be warfare; according to the direction it moves—east, west, south, or north—the place where war will break out can be determined. If the stars of Wang Liang are incomplete, ferry crossings and river routes will be blocked. If Wang Liang controls the horse, then carriages and cavalry will fill the outskirts, chaos will spread throughout the land, and large-scale warfare will erupt, followed by the appearance of a sage ruler; this will occur within three years at the latest.

The Sea of Divination says: Four stars of the four horses are quiet and unmoving, the emperor sits calmly in his camp, and there is no need for military action. Jiao Yanshou says: The star of the Four Horses moves forward and approaches the star of the Passage, rivers and lakes will have calamities. Xi Meng says: The star of Wang Liang is properly positioned, horses will suffer from illness; when Wang Liang and the Horse Star are level, the emperor's horses will be sick. The Jingzhou Divination says: When Wang Liang and the Horse Star are level, there will be urgent matters throughout the country. Xi Meng says: When Wang Liang faces the star of Zhao Fu, the price of horses will be low. The Huo Lian Diagram says: Wang Liang driving the horse, the northern barbarians will establish their authority and issue commands. The original book's marginal note cites Song Jun, saying: When the star of Cai is beside Wang Liang, if it moves ahead of Wang Liang and is behind the Horse Star, this is called 'cè mǎ' (driving the horse).

The Shi school says: The Wang Liang star is usually located in the middle of the Milky Way and is auspicious; it should not move. Once it moves, there will be military affairs. When Wang Liang and Si Ma (Four Horses) shake, the Son of Heaven will travel; slight shaking indicates a small scale journey, while significant shaking indicates a large scale journey, and the royal carriage can travel thousands of miles. If the star emits apointed rays (ray or spike), the Son of Heaven will have military affairs, with a duration of two years; the king's mind is certainly set on something else, but his thoughts are still deliberating and have not yet shown in his words or expressions. All these should be known by observing the movements of the Wang Liang star. The Shi school's praise says: The five stars of Wang Liang can foresee the solemn and dignified movements of the king.

The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-six

The Shi school's asterisms

The constellation of the Heavenly Path contains thirty-one stars.

The Shi school says: The Gede consists of six stars. The original commentary says: Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian: Book of Celestial Officials" states that the six stars following Wang Liang span across the Milky Way and reach the Encampment Mansion, called Gede. Checking the star charts, there are twenty-two Tengshe stars north of the Encampment Mansion, while Gede only has six stars. This passage in the "Book of Celestial Officials" may be an error by Sima Zizhang. Gede is located to the northeast of Wang Liang. The original commentary says: The southernmost star of Gede is five degrees into the Kuizhu Mansion, forty-three degrees and a half from the north celestial pole, and fifty-eight degrees and a half within the Yellow Path. Wu Xian says: Gede belongs to the Water Officials. The Shi school says: The shape of Gede is like an elevated bridge in the air, stretching from the northern gate of the Purple Micro Enclosure to the edge of the Milky Way. The Son of Heaven travels along it, which is a passage used by divine spirits. The Shi school also says: Gede is the flag of Wang Liang, also called "Purple Palace Flag." It is located beside Wang Liang, with one end touching the wall of the Purple Palace. When the flag stars move abnormally, the direction they point to is where warfare will occur. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: Gede is used to resist impacts and resolve various calamities.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Gelong star path is the exclusive path used by the Son of Heaven; it crosses the Milky Way and directly connects to the Purple Palace, and in later generations it was called the Gelong star path. If these stars are bright and arranged neatly in a straight line, the ruler will have good fortune and the world will be at peace; if the stars move, lose their original appearance, or if the number of stars is incomplete, the Son of Heaven's river crossing path will be blocked, and there will be ministers in the court who harbor plots. The Gelong star is in charge of roads, and even the Son of Heaven's private entries and exits are under its jurisdiction. When the king resides in another palace, he uses it for divination; if the journey is not far and the stars are bright and large, it indicates the king is wise and the roads in all directions are very smooth; if the number of stars is incomplete, the Son of Heaven's road and ferry will be blocked. Jiao Yanshou said: The Gelong stars move in the same direction as the palace boundary stars of the Purple Palace, which can prevent the danger of drowning on the river bridge; otherwise, there will be calamity on the king's palace road. The Shi school praised: The Gelong star consists of six stars, which are the passage for the deities to travel.

Appendix on the Star Divination of Thirty-two Paths

The Shi school says: The star known as Fu Lu is only one star, located on both sides of Ge Dao. The original commentary says: Fu Lu enters the mansion of Kui Xiu three degrees, is located forty-three degrees from the northern celestial pole, and is fifty-seven degrees within the Yellow Path. Xi Meng says: Fu Lu is also called "Wang Ji's Tai Pu," "Bo Le," and "Jiu Fu," all of which are famous names for those skilled in judging and driving horses. The "Treatise on Omens" says: Fu Lu is in charge of clearing the way. Xi Meng says: Fu Lu is in charge of controlling wind and rain. The Shi school says: The function of Fu Lu is to pass through roads, and its role is the same as Ge Dao; when Ge Dao is damaged, one should use Fu Lu as an alternative, so that there is a backup road to prevent unexpected situations and to be used for predicting disasters, hence it is also called "Bei Lu."

The Li Wei says: When the Fu Lu star is bright, the emperor will live long, the state will flourish, and the people will not suffer from plague. The Lun Shi says: When the Fu Lu star disappears, roads will become blocked. The Shi school says: When the Fu Lu star emits apointed rays, chariots, horses, and cavalry will fill the outskirts. Xi Meng says: When the Fu Lu star moves ahead of the Ma star, chariots and cavalry will fill the outskirts, and chaos will arise throughout the country, lasting for ten months. Wang Liang's constellation is the four stars of the Si Ma; the so-called 'Zheng Ma' refers to the Fu Lu star moving ahead of the Si Ma stars. The Shi Shi Zan says: The Fu Lu star is one star, set to prevent damage to roads.

The Heavenly General divination covers thirty-three sections.

The Shi school says: The Heavenly General consists of eleven stars, located to the north of theBond mansion. The original commentary notes: Among them, the bright star enters theLegs mansion fifteen and a half degrees, is sixty degrees and a half less from the north celestial pole, and is twenty-nine degrees and a half less within the Yellow Path. Wu Xian says: The Heavenly General belongs to the metal officialdom. Xi Meng says: The Heavenly General is a star official used by heaven to command the military forces; it leads loyal and upright soldiers to guard the heavenly court. The Shi school says: The Heavenly General is the great general in the sky; the central bright star is the general himself, while the surrounding stars are lower-ranking officers and soldiers. When the general star moves, warfare arises, and the general is about to go on a campaign.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the small star of the Heavenly General moves or if the number of stars is incomplete, there will be military action. Another divination says: When the stars of the Heavenly General are bright and still, there will be no warfare in the world and the great generals will be safe; but if the starlight is dim and the stars are unstable, there will be a great battle, and the great generals will go out to campaign. The Sea Divination says: If the stars of the Heavenly General move, the Son of Heaven will personally lead the army to campaign. Xi Meng says: When the flag star of the Heavenly General is straight, raised, and rises, the side the flag points to will win, and the side the flag faces will lose; the flag refers to the stars on either side of the general star. The Shi school's praise says: The Heavenly General consists of eleven stars, which govern military affairs and warfare.

The Big陵Star Divination covers thirty-four sections.

The Shi school says: The Big Dipper consists of eight stars, located north of the Stomach mansion (the original text here says 'eight li,' which should be 'eight stars,' and this is recorded as is). The original book's marginal note says: The northernmost star of the Big Dipper is located six and a half degrees into the Bond mansion, forty-three and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and thirty-nine and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. The Shi school also says: The Big Dipper is also called 'Ji Jing'; these stars are bright, and among the vassal states there are many great calamities, and the people suffer many diseases, and there are many funerals within the feudal houses.

The Shi school says: In the Great Mound, there is a star called the Accumulated Corpse Star. When the Accumulated Corpse Star is bright, there will be great mourning. The dead pile up like hills and ridges. The Gan school says: The Great Mound symbolizes burial and mourning, and the Accumulated Corpse Star is attached to it. Xi Meng says: The so-called Accumulated Mound is the Great Mound, which is the mouth of the rolled tongue. The Great Mound curves toward the north, while the rolled tongue curves toward the south. They are one male and one female, forming a pair. Xi Meng also says: When there are many stars in the Accumulated Mound, grain and food accumulate; when there are few stars, grain and food are lost. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The Great Mound consists of eight stars, which govern matters of death and mourning.

The star Tianchuan (Heavenly Ship) indicates a total of thirty-five.

The Shi school says: The Tian Chuan constellation consists of nine stars, located in the Milky Way north of Da Ling. The original commentary notes: The northernmost star of Tian Chuan enters the Lou Xu mansion at nine degrees, is forty-three and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and is forty-three degrees and a few minutes within the Yellow Path. Xi Meng says: The Tian Chuan nine stars are also called "Wang Chuan"; among them, four stars are considered good when their brightness is uniform, which brings great stability to the world. If the stars appear dim, depart from their proper position, shrink, or disappear, there will be warfare or mourning in the world.

The Shi school says: The Tianchuan star governs floods and droughts, also called "Tian Geng." The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Tianchuan is an official in charge of the emperor's crossing rivers, usually residing in the Milky Way. Xi Meng says: Tianchuan is the warship used by the Heavenly General. The Shi school says: Tianchuan usually resides in the Milky Way as its proper place; when the starlight is dim, the country will have military actions, the river crossings and waterways will be blocked, and the rivers will overflow, so boats must be used for passage. Jiao Yanshou says: The four stars before the ship star usually reside in the Milky Way; if they leave their position, it indicates that the generals plan to launch a naval battle but fail, and also signifies that a country will be submerged by a great flood. The Shi school's praise says: Tianchuan consists of nine stars, responsible for crossing rivers where they are impassable.

Rolling the tongue to predict thirty-six outcomes.

The Shi school says: The six stars of Juan She are located north of Maomu. The original commentary notes: The northernmost star of Juan She enters the stomach mansion by ten degrees and a half, is fifty-six degrees from the north celestial pole, and is forty-one degrees and a half within the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The stars of Juan She are also called 'Sheng She', 'Zuo She', 'Ji Jing', and 'Ji Xin'. The Spring and Autumn Syncretic Diagram says: The stars of Juan She govern speech and verbal disputes. The Shi school says: The stars of Juan She govern those who are eloquent and articulate; when the stars are bright and large, it indicates that those skilled in eloquent speech will hold power and influence.

The Shi school says: The star of the rolling tongue should be small and dim; once it becomes bright and large, there will be much slander, and many people below will spread rumors, leading to disputes over words. The Shi school also says: The stars of the rolling tongue that are curved like a tongue are auspicious; when the tongue shape is straight, there will be much calamity caused by disputes. The "Sheng Qia Fu" says: When the rolling tongue star moves, and there are many stars among them, great wars will arise and disputes will continue; when the rolling tongue is still and the stars are few, the country will be peaceful and there will be no warfare.

Xi Meng said: The stars of the rolling tongue are numerous and vigorous, leading to many disputes over words throughout the land, and many people die from illness; another view is that warfare will arise, with dead bodies piling up like hills and ridges. Xi Meng also said: When the stars of the rolling tongue move, great warfare will arise, and there will be many disputes over words; if the number of stars is few, there will be no warfare. Xi Meng further said: When the stars of the rolling tongue are away from their position, staying elsewhere instead of remaining in the Milky Way, there will be a widespread trend of spreading false words and speaking nonsense throughout the land. The Shi school's commentary says: The six stars of the rolling tongue can foresee slander and defamation.

The constellation of the Five Carriages (Wuxing) is used for divination and consists of thirty-seven stars.

The Shi school says: The Five Carriages consist of five stars, and there are also three pillars with nine stars, totaling fourteen stars, located in the northeast of the Net mansion. The original commentary notes: The westernmost star of the Five Carriages enters the third degree of the Net mansion, is sixty-three degrees from the north celestial pole, and is ten and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. The Shi school also says: The Five Carriages are also called 'Heavenly Granary'; the five stars are located north of the Net mansion and the Hairy Head mansion, and east of the Great Tomb. The westernmost large star is called Heavenly Granary. Heavenly Granary corresponds to the position of a general, matches the Net mansion, and its territory corresponds to the state of Qin. Among the five planets, it corresponds to the planet of Tai Bai. The deity associated with it is named Ling Wei. Next to it, in the northeast, is a star called Yu, whose territory corresponds to Yan and Zhao, matches the planet of Chen Xing, and its deity is named Feng Bo. Then to the east is a star called Heavenly Granary, whose territory corresponds to Wei and Lu, and its deity is named Yu Shi. Then to the southeast is a star called Sikong, whose territory corresponds to Chu, matches the planet of Zhen Xing, and its deity is named Leigong. Then to the southwest is a star called Xiang, whose territory corresponds to Han and Wei, matches the planet of Ying Huo, and its deity is named Fenglong.

The Shi school says: Among the five chariots there are three pillars. The original commentary cites Jin Zhu's explanation of the character 'column' as found in the phonetic annotations. Each column consists of three stars, arranged like the three legs of a tripod. A column is also called 'xiu ge' and 'qi'. Xi Meng says: The five chariots are also called 'Xianchi', 'Wuhuang', and 'Chonghua', and they are the dwelling place of the thunder god Fenglong. The 'Astronomical Records' say: The so-called 'three springs' refer to the three pillars of the five chariots. The 'Yellow Emperor's Divination' says: The five chariots are the seats of the five heavenly emperors. Wu Xian says: The five chariots symbolize the five weapons of the Son of Heaven, belonging to the water official. Xi Ge says: The five chariots are the great marsh of the Son of Heaven, governing the swift war chariots.

The Shi school says: Among the Five Carriages, the large star in the Northwest governs soybeans, the star in the Northeast governs rice, the star in the Southeast governs flax, the star due South governs millet, and the star in the Northwest governs wheat. The Gan school says: The five grains corresponding to the stars of the Five Carriages each have their own territory. If a star wavers and changes color, the country in that territory will suffer misfortune, the price of the five grains will rise sharply, and the people will suffer from hunger and death. Then (the original text here is missing) to determine fortune or misfortune. Xi Meng says: The Five Carriages govern the five grains; one carriage governs flax, flax being the same as hemp; one carriage governs wheat; one carriage governs red beans and black beans; one carriage governs millet; and one carriage governs rice. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the stars of the Five Carriages and the Three Pillars move, the army will be mobilized within thirty days.

The Li Wei Han Wen Jia says: The Son of Heaven observes celestial phenomena, investigates geographical features, harmonizes yin and yang, calculates the positions of stars, explores the fundamental principles of divine changes, and obtains blessings from all directions, arriving at the correct conclusion of observing celestial phenomena from the Lingtai. Then the Five Carriages and Three Pillars will have even brightness, not deviating from their usual positions; rivers, plains, land, and lakes will each be in their proper places, and the harvest will be abundant. The small note in the original text cites Song Jun's commentary, which says: The Son of Heaven investigates the weather and celestial signs. If auspicious qi appears, it is like red stars emitting rays, by which blessings can be obtained and disasters averted. The Five Carriages govern grain, and they remove disasters and seek blessings for the people, so that the people do not suffer from hunger or cold. Therefore, the even brightness of the Five Carriage stars corresponds to this.

The Spring and Autumn Original Mandate says: The five chariots and three pillars symbolize the chariots of the world; if one pillar disappears, one third of the chariots are mobilized; if two pillars disappear, two thirds of the chariots are mobilized; if all three pillars disappear, the Son of Heaven personally leads the army in campaign. The Wen Yao Gou says: Within Xianchi (i.e., the five chariots), if three pillars are broken, military calamity will arise. The Shi school says: Within the five chariots, if one pillar departs or disappears, the mobilized troops are less than half; if two pillars depart or disappear, the mobilized troops exceed half; if all three pillars depart or disappear, all troops are mobilized; when the pillar stars return to their original positions, the army will withdraw. If the pillar stars move outward and do not approach the Tianku star, there will be military mobilization and rising grain prices, requiring the transportation of grain over a thousand li; if the pillar stars move outward for a full month, grain prices will rise, corresponding to a year; if they move outward for two months, grain prices will rise sixfold, corresponding to two years; if they move outward for three months, grain prices will rise ninefold, corresponding to three years; if they move outward for three months and still do not return to their original positions, grain prices will rise tenfold.

The Shi school said: If the pillars of the Five Carriages stars move outward and do not lie between two stars, there will be great floods throughout the land and a sharp rise in the price of timber. If the pillars stand upright, it is a sign that vehicles will soon move, and the prices of construction materials will surge, requiring the transportation of earth and stone over a thousand miles. The Shi school also said: The Five Carriage stars are best when their brightness is uniform and their spacing conforms to the usual pattern. If the Tianku star among the Five Carriages sinks into the Milky Way and disappears, there will be a great accumulation of corpses, people will be unable to cross rivers, the river channels will be blocked, and warfare will follow. The Shi school further said: If the Five Carriage stars are bright and large, or if there are many bright spots around them, great military calamities will arise.

The Shi school says: The Five Carriage stars' rest and movement star moves out from the Heavenly Repository side, indicating strong military equipment and the deployment of light chariots and cavalry; when it moves out from the Heavenly Granary side, large chariots are mobilized, and women also have to pull carts to transport grain. The direction indicated by the rest and movement star is where the royal carriage will proceed. The Shi school also says: When the Heavenly Granary star among the Five Carriage stars disappears, the corresponding army will surely suffer from a grain shortage, become destitute, and ultimately perish. Xi Meng says: When the flag star of the Five Carriage stars disappears, a great wind arises, overturning houses and breaking trees. Another divination says: When the rest and movement star of the Five Carriage stars shifts position and the flag star moves, the four barbarian tribes will rebel. Another divination says: When the rest and movement star of the Five Carriage stars moves in the opposite direction and blocks the great star, the whole world will mobilize armies, and the side that strikes first will win.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the five chariots' pillar stars stand upright in reverse, it is used to predict the movements and halts of armies. The Shi school says: When all the stars of the five chariots are bright, there will be a good harvest of grain; if one of the stars is dim, the corresponding type of grain will not grow well and will not be harvested. Another divination says: When the five chariots' stars lose their normal color, there will be a land of three thousand li without vegetation, with not even an inch of grass. The Shi school says: When the stars of the five chariots disappear, the corresponding country will suffer from famine and also face military troubles. The *Shi Commentary* says: The five chariots and three pillars are good when their brightness is even. They oversee the abundance and loss of grain and can also foresee defeat and injury.

The Heavenly Gate Star Divination covers thirty-eight items.

The Shi school said: The Tian Guan star is located south of the Five Carriage and northwest of the Three Stars mansion. The original book's marginal note said: When the Tian Guan star enters the Turtle Beak mansion, it begins at a degree, located seventy-three and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, two degrees and a half outside the Yellow Path. Xi Meng said: The Tian Guan star is the gate of heaven; it is exactly on the Yellow Path. If the sun and moon do not pass through this gate, there will certainly be a king of a country who does not come to pay homage. Another view says that if the pillar star loses its path and the five planets do not pass through this gate, there will certainly be ministers who act against reason and wrongly.

The Huangdi Zhan says: If the sun and moon, along with the five stars, do not pass through the Tian Guan star, there must be a rebellious minister who does not obey the king's orders; or the king is acting unjustly, and the ministers plot to harm the king, leading to the outbreak of warfare. The Shi school says: When the Tian Guan star emits a bright ray, there will be military affairs. Jiao Yanshou says: If the Tian Guan star is out of its proper position or shares the same mansion as the five vehicles stars, the general will put on armor and prepare for battle, and the city gates of the capital will be closed. The Shiji Tian Gao Shu says: When the Northern Black Emperor exercises benevolence, the Tian Guan star will tremble. The Shi school says: A bright and large Tian Guan star is auspicious, indicating that the way of the king is smooth and unimpeded. The Shi Zhi Zan says: The Tian Guan star is one star, which is the necessary passage for the sun, moon, and five stars to pass through.

North and South River and the Earthly Branch Wu (horse) indicate thirty-nine

The Shi school says: The southern river and the northern river together have six stars, arranged on either side of the Well mansion, enclosing the Well mansion in the middle. The original commentary says: The central star of the eastern branch of the river, known as Shu, is seventeen degrees and a half within the Well mansion, eighty degrees from the northern celestial pole, and fourteen degrees outside the Yellow Path. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: The star Yue north of the Well mansion is called the northern river, and the star Yue south of the Well mansion is called the southern river; together, the two rivers form the heavenly gate, serving as a pass and bridge.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the southern river戍 is also called 'South Record', 'Yang Gate', 'South Palace', 'South Height', 'South Pass', and 'Yue Gate'. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: the southern and northern river戍 together are called 'Heavenly Height', also called 'Heavenly Pavilion'; the space between the two river戍 is called 'Heavenly Path'. Xi Meng says: the southern river戍 is also called 'South Repository', and the northern river戍 is also called 'North Repository', also called 'Heavenly Gate'. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the northern river戍 is also called 'North Horizontal', and has other names such as 'Yin Gate', 'North Palace', 'North Height', 'North Pass', and 'Hu Gate'.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The southern river戍 is like a weight, and the northern river戍 is like a rod of a scale; if the weight is not aligned, the sky will tilt.所谓 not aligned refers to the southern river戍 shifting five feet southward. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: The northern and southern river戍 are the celestial streets; if the stars of the celestial streets move and clash, the world will experience great chaos and family members will be separated. Wu Xian says: The northern and southern river戍 are the gates facing north, belonging to the water officials. The Shi school says: The so-called celestial gate is the river戍; it oversees calamities in the Central Plains region. These are all laws established by heaven to show the people. Xi Meng says: The two river戍, together with the stars guarding them, are the gates of the heavenly emperor.

Another divination passage states: Between two Wu signs is the heavenly gate; the sun and moon, along with the five stars, frequently pass through this gate. If they move in accordance with this path, it is auspicious; but one should not remain there for a long time. If the sun and moon and the five stars do not pass through this gate, it indicates that the king has deviated from the correct path. If they pass through the southern side of the gate, it signifies improper handling of legal matters; if they pass through the northern side, it signifies deviation due to matters concerning women, wealth, and money. The time of fulfillment is near, within three years; medium, within six years; distant, within nine years.

Han Yang said: The northern and southern戍 are the heavenly gate; between the two戍 is the heavenly path; the sun and moon, along with the five stars, frequently pass through between the northern and southern戍. If they deviate beyond the northern戍, the country will suffer from drought. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The stars of the northern and southern rivers should be bright and their size should remain as before; in this case, the country will be peaceful and the four directions' barbarians will come to pay homage. If the starlight is dim, or if it wavers or loses its normal state, large-scale warfare will break out at the borders, and the four barbarians will attack the Central Plains, causing the ruler to worry.

Xi Meng said: When the small stars are densely scattered in the northern river and the戍 position below, there will be common people who do not obey governance, generals who are confused and unclear, and officials who often fail in their duties. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the sun, moon, and five stars do not pass through the path of the heavens, there must be a minister who acts against the principles and does wrong; another interpretation says that there must be blocked roads. The Shi school says: The southern戍 oversees matters concerning the Yi Di, while the northern戍 oversees matters concerning the Central Plains; between the two戍 is the heavenly gate. The Shi school also says: When the stars of the northern and southern rivers are incomplete, roads will be blocked; another interpretation says that there will be a great flood. The Shi school's praise says: The two rivers and six stars can foresee rebellious and perverse events.
