The sun shines brightly.
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
Liu Xiang's "Hong Fan Zhuan" says: "The Sun is the greatest symbol of illumination between heaven and earth, the greatest standard for the length of light and dark, and the measure of day and night. It is the essence of all yang energy and the symbol of many noble things. Therefore, it spreads yang energy as benevolence, and the earth receives this benevolence. The virtue of the Sun belongs to the category of nurturing all things; thus, when the Sun rises, the world becomes bright, and when it sets, the world becomes dark and dim."
The sun changes color.
The Li Wei · Dou Wei Yi says: "The Sun's center appears blue and its outer part yellow, which is called 'One Unacceptable'." (Original book note: The Sun should primarily be yellow, corresponding to the ruler practicing benevolent governance; a yellow center with a blue outer part corresponds to the ruler observing propriety; a yellow center with a red outer part corresponds to the ruler acting with righteousness; a yellow center with a black outer part corresponds to the ruler possessing wisdom. The five colors accumulate in order, illuminating all directions, which is the normal state. Now, instead, the center is blue and the outer part yellow, indicating a reversal of the hierarchy of respect and subordination. The central yellow color, which should be in the middle, has been displaced to the outside and thus is being encroached upon, hence it is called 'One Unacceptable'.)
The Star of brightness and prestige appears red, indicating that the sovereign is capricious in his anger and joy, rash in executing the innocent, neglecting the worship of heaven and earth, and being disrespectful to ghosts and spirits. Heaven will then send down a rain of dust, the climate will remain persistently hot, during an eclipse the sun will have no light, the ground will tremble, and lightning will fall downward. (Original commentary: The red color belongs to fire, and after fire is completely consumed, it turns into earth. The loss of ritual propriety in governance leads to the falling of earth rain. The south belongs to fire, hence the persistent heat. The south corresponds to the trigram 'Li' (Fire), which symbolizes the sun, hence during an eclipse, the sun has no light. When fire is extinguished, it becomes ash, which is earth, hence the ground trembles. Thunder arises from the earth's qi, hence the lightning falls downward; the term 'downward' refers to the lightning destroying and striking downward, harming the people.) If these signs appear and are not corrected, there will be foreign military calamities, with people being killed and left unburied. When the center of the sun is red and the outer part is yellow, this is called 'two unfitnesses'.
The Star of brightness and prestige turns white, indicating the ruler's government is in chaos and he has lost his authority. Ministers act independently and recklessly, violating principles, while the ruler is powerless to punish them. The virtuous are unable to enter court to assist in governance, and many officials gain positions through the influence of women. Mountains frequently collapse, there is a great drought, rivers and seas dry up, tigers and wolves attack people, the people prefer to bribe, officials collude in wrongdoing, and warfare occurs repeatedly within a thousand li. If this is not corrected, the state will perish within the year. One should punish those who have gained power through improper means to prevent calamities. Those who have entered the court through the influence of women should be promptly removed to avoid disaster. When the center of the Star of brightness and prestige is white and the outer part is yellow, this is called the "Three Unacceptable" situation.
The Star of brightness and prestige darkens, indicating a low-born person becomes the ruler, women take control and treat virtuous men with contempt, and wicked ministers slander the upright. They take advantage of the ruler's vulnerabilities to gain proximity, while minor officials secretly seize power, endangering the ruler himself. (Original commentary: When the sun's light darkens, it signifies dimming, hence a low-born person becomes the ruler. Darkness is a color associated with yin, hence women dominate politics and rashly execute virtuous people. Darkness also belongs to water, which flows everywhere, taking the shape of the container it is in—square or round. This is used to illustrate佞men who flatter the ruler, thus being able to exploit opportunities and gain favor.the so-called「私」means to seize secretly; petty men are about to steal the ruler's position, even endangering the ruler's life.)
At this time, rain often falls continuously, causing water disasters such as seawater overflowing and rivers rising sharply, resulting in many people drowning. Travel by boat becomes more common in places where boats are needed. Snakes enter the capital city, and wild chickens share the same place with domestic chickens. (Original commentary: A king who favors his concubines will certainly believe their words, intending to depose the legitimate son and replace him with a younger son, hence the strange occurrences of snakes entering the capital and wild chickens sharing the same dwelling with domestic chickens. Snakes and wild chickens both have patterns on their bodies and should be in the wild, symbolizing those outside the court who desire to share power and attempt to replace the existing position. Therefore, The Book of Changes' Yin Qi Chou says: 'If the reigning king does not reform corrupt policies, his orders cannot be carried out, ministers compete for private interests, the king is weak and the ministers are strong, appointments are improper, and strong winds destroy houses and break trees, becoming misfortunes, there will be occurrences such as snakes entering the capital and wild chickens sharing the same dwelling with domestic chickens.') Many women die from serious illnesses, and their unborn children are also lost. (Original commentary: Listening to the words of women, they desire to monopolize power, leading to mutual jealousy and harm.) If this is not corrected, calamities will occur within the palace gates. (Original commentary: One should distance oneself from women and reappoint virtuous talents.) This phenomenon, where the center of the sun is dark and the outer part is yellow, is called 'Four Unacceptable Things.'
The Spring and Autumn Secret潭Ba says: "The Ji Xu mansion governs the first month. If during this month the color of the Sun is green with a reddish tinge, dark and yellowish, hanging alone in the sky without brightness, lasting for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the Sun should occur on the first day of the seventh month. Nearby feudal lords and ministers assisting in government will rebel. In the first month, the ground will shake and tremble, and the army will be in chaos." The Spring and Autumn Secret潭Ba says: "The Fang Xu mansion governs the second month. If during this month the color of the Sun is as dark and dim as described for the first month, lasting for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the Sun should occur on the second day of the eighth month. The southern and northern barbarians will invade the Central States, meteors will frequently appear, and the whole country will suffer a great drought. Military conflicts will arise within three years. If during the second month blood rain falls from the sky, then within ninety days a famous river will break its banks. The whole country will have many deceitful officials. The female favorites and their followers in the court will defy the Son of Heaven, focusing only on acquiring luxuries for pleasure, and will thus suffer misfortune."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring River says: "The Horn mansion governs March. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in March is as dim and overpowering as described for January, and this condition lasts more than ten days, then there will be heavy fog in May, an eclipse on the first day of September, and military conflict in October, coming suddenly and urgently. If a comet appears in March, as large as the Room mansion, then after 120 days, famous mountains will collapse. If the Malefic of violence remains fixed in the Heart mansion, it will be the fulfillment of this prophecy. Therefore, the Star of brightness and prestige is the symbol of the Son of Heaven, representing the sovereign, father, husband, and elder brother, as well as the destiny of the Central Kingdom. When an enlightened ruler ascends the throne and all virtuous ministers fulfill their duties, the world is at peace and the people are secure, then the Star of brightness and prestige appears pure and bright, radiating brilliant light."
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: "In a country with clear governance, the sun and moon shine particularly brightly when they pass through its territory, the sovereign enjoys good fortune and prosperity, and the people live in peace." The Book of Documents, Examining the Luminous Stars says: "When the five political affairs are not out of order, the sun and moon shine brightly; the so-called five political affairs refer to the policies of spring, summer, autumn, winter, and the season of the fifth month, which is the time of the summer solstice." The Book of Documents, Examining the Luminous Stars also says: "The sun shines to the farthest corners of the four directions, emitting nine kinds of light. In the east, it is the time of the vernal equinox when day and night are equal, called 'midday'; in the south, it is the time of the summer solstice when daylight is longest, called 'long day'; in the west, it is the time of the autumnal equinox when day and night are equal, called 'midnight'; in the north, it is the time of the winter solstice when daylight is shortest, called 'short day'; the sunlight can reach as far as forty-four thousand six hundred and sixty li away."
The Li Wei · Dou Wei Yi says: "The sovereign inherits the virtue of earth and becomes king, encountering a time of great peace, and the sun encompasses all five colors without specializing in one." (Original commentary: Song Jun says, this refers to including the colors of the five phases without favoring any one of them.) The Li Wei · Han Wen Jia says: "When the sovereign's decrees are dignified and he can issue commands independently, the sun and moon become upright and bright." The Chūnqiū Gǎnjīng Fú says: "Whether a king is sage is verified by the sun: if the sun is bright, it indicates the governance is correct; if it is dim and unclear, it indicates the governance is disordered. Each should be judged according to its category, and the Son of Heaven should always use this as a warning and self-discipline."
The "Ancient Secret of the Book of Filial Piety" says: "The Sun shines brightly, bringing joy throughout the four seas, people have no resentful hearts, yin and yang harmonize, longevity is achieved, and the people thus enjoy peace and well-being." The "Inner Record of the Book of Filial Piety" says: "The Sun is gentle and possesses five colors, indicating that the ruler has virtue." Jing Fang's "Commentary on the Changes" says: "The Sun represents the essence of all yang energies, its inner part is bright and displays a mixture of black and yellow, possessing all five colors without favoring any one color, used to symbolize the ruler's illumination of the entire world, not favoring any particular region, thus it cannot be described by a single color." Jing Fang's "Commentary on the Changes" says: "When a sage and enlightened ruler is in power, the Sun exhibits all five colors." Jing Fang says: "The Sun's radiance is grand, the world is at peace, ministers and subjects flourish, all people prolong their lives, and generations are endless."
Sun's commentary in "Ying Rui Tu" says: "If the sovereign does not entrust power to his ministers, the sun and moon will display their brilliance." It also says: "If the emperor's actions do not contradict the agricultural and political regulations, the sun will display its brilliance." Wang Chong's "Lun Heng" states: "When the emperor's virtue and governance reach heaven, the sun will emit great light." Han Yang says: "Variations in the sun's light relate to the rise and fall of the imperial dynasty; if the sunlight is weak or obscured, it indicates the premature death of the crown prince, the loss of heaven's mandate throughout the land, and widespread mourning. The country will experience clear signs of calamity, which should originate from the families of renowned ministers. If the emperor can correct himself, uphold filial piety, understand the will of heaven, and take measures to resolve the issue, the emperor's fate will turn favorable."
The "Spring and Hidden Spring" text says: "The Chariot Mansion governs the fourth month. If the Star of Brightness and Prestige appears white in the fourth month, the red color resembles cinnabar floating on the surface, while the blue color appears as dull and unremarkable as plum leaves and the flowers of the plant known as wanlan. If this lasts for ten days or more than a month, an eclipse of the sun will occur on the first day of the eleventh month, and the Son of Heaven will be killed by a powerful minister. One hundred and twenty days later, the great mountains of the Five Peaks will collapse." Another account says: "The ruler dies and cannot be buried, and ten states east of Wu and Chu establish themselves as kings. The line of the Son of Heaven is broken, and the vassal states suffer many losses, while powerful men roam the land unchecked."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The mansion of Extended Net governs the fifth month. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in this month is as dark and overpowering as described for the first month, lasting for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the sun should occur on the new moon or the last day of the month in the eleventh month, with disorder among the southern夷 people. After ninety days, the earth will expel blood-like water, and warfare will break out simultaneously, with rebellious energy rising to the heavens. After one hundred and twenty days, the five wandering stars will follow the Malefic of violence and gather in the region corresponding to the Central Kingdom, with the four surrounding夷 tribes all rising in rebellion. Concubines will weep in the palace, and the Son of Heaven will perish in his country. By that year's fifth month, a comet with five bright rays will appear from the zenith, and nine rainbows will cross and appear together with the sun; the Son of Heaven will perish, the feudal lords will each proclaim themselves as kings, the rulers above will be executed, and many heroes will rise up, issuing commands with powerful military authority."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring River says: "The Well mansion governs June. If in June the Star of brightness and prestige appears as red as strong wine in a jar, and lasts for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the sun should occur on the first day of the tenth lunar month, with people from all directions plotting to kill the sovereign. The military officers will become arrogant and domineering through their military strength; after ninety days, great chaos will occur within the country. By that year's June, the sky will echo with sounds, the ground will crack, and the three dukes and nine ministers will all rebel, each establishing themselves as kings. Whoever wins will be the king, and this is not a mandate from heaven."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The Root Mansion governs the seventh month. If during the seventh month the Star of Brightness and Prestige appears green with a red tinge, like hanging alone in the sky at dusk and losing its radiance, lasting for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the sun will occur on the first day of the first lunar month; after seventy days, mountains and hills will collapse, rivers and streams will boil over, and all ministers will be appointed indiscriminately, with salaries and positions falling into the hands of famous marquises. After one hundred and twenty days, high peaks will become deep valleys, and deep valleys will rise into hills, the world will be in chaos, a group of petty men will control the state's affairs, calling round things square and fraud as loyalty; the imperial family will lose power, only to bow and fall with the wind, and the Son of Heaven will greatly weaken. This omen can be foreseen and prevented, thus eliminating it."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The mansion of Hairy Head governs the eighth month. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in the eighth month appears as dark and overpowering as described for the first month, lasting for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the sun will occur on the first day of the third month, with the wife and concubines plotting to kill the king. After one hundred and twenty days, the earth will surely experience a great earthquake, and armies will rise across the land, attacking and killing the king. In that year's eighth month, there will be a falling meteor. In May and June, there will be secret plots to assassinate the king, and that king will be easily replaced by the ministers. Heavy rain will wash away the land, and great waves will flow across the country, causing the king's authority to waver and decline. However, the five clans of the same surname will not yet perish. Around the time of one hundred and twenty days, the light of the seven stars of the Big Dipper will fade, and the change of dynasty will begin. If these events do not occur by then, the Son of Heaven should renew the political teachings of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, and the achievements of the Five Emperors, thereby establishing a revival of the dynasty."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The Legs mansion governs September. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in September resembles that of January, being dark blue and not bright, and this lasts for ten days or more than half a month, then in the following year locusts will fall from the sky, and frost will descend in May. In the capital city, on the last day of March, an eclipse of the sun occurs, the Son of Heaven becomes addicted to women, and the faction of the concubines dominates. By that September, tigers enter the city, pheasants fly in groups and build nests in the capital, the Son of Heaven delights in hunting in the wild, the master of the house departs while outsiders gain power, the regions south of Wu and Chu are destroyed, and thus chaos arises."
The "Spring Hidden Deep Pool" says: "The eastern Wall Mansion governs the tenth month. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in the tenth month turns black, and its surface patterns cross each other like a network, there will be an eclipse on the first day of the fourth month. After seventy days, snakes will gather in the market streets, and wild chickens will die in the ancestral temple and court. The ruler will lose his country. Wild birds will jump in, even attracting parrots, the king will be in danger, the whole world will be shocked, neighboring countries will invade, the ruler will be expelled and the ministers will take power, the lower ranks will drive out the upper ranks. Such omens require the Son of Heaven to be on his guard, transforming possible calamities into blessings."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The mansion of Emptiness governs the eleventh month. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in the eleventh month resembles green coarse silk, and this lasts for ten days or more than half a month, then within ten days red soil will fall from the sky. When the five colors appear together and a solar eclipse occurs on the new moon day, ministers will plot to kill the sovereign. Seventy days later, a great frost will descend, making it impossible for people to move about, and people will dare not leave their homes. Some people will hide, while others will flee into the palace. The sovereign will be frightened and flee the capital, leading to the collapse of the land and the destruction of the system of rites. The Central Plains will be devastated, and the barbarians will take advantage of the situation to invade. In the seventh month, the army will go out, and a large battle will be fought, killing the sovereign and executing fathers. Even distant relatives without mourning ties and the nine generations of close relatives will be implicated. The positions of sovereign and minister will be completely reversed."
The Spring and Autumn Hidden Spring Book says: "The Dipper mansion governs December. If the color of the Star of brightness and prestige in December appears gray, like painted mud, like a rainbow, or like a closed fingernail, and this lasts for ten days or more than half a month, then an eclipse of the sun should occur on the first day of the sixth month and the last day of the sixth month. Ninety days later, the sun will only have a dim shadow left. Ministers will seize control of state affairs, usurp the throne and claim kingship, the Son of Heaven will be displaced and rejected, powerful feudal lords will hold the power of life and death, and the barbarians will invade the Central States for a hundred years. There will be no Son of Heaven above and no regional chief below; a pack of wolves will be in power. After two hundred twenty days, tigers will howl, the ground will collapse, sand will fall from the sky, and stones in the mountains will jump. By that year's sixth month, the Son of Heaven will be weak, and the ministers will become the actual rulers."
The "Chunqiu Gan Jing Fu" says: "When the sovereign is preoccupied with perverse affairs, the ministers' advice is not heeded, extravagance prevails, and thieves are allowed to run rampant. If the ruler only seeks personal pleasure, and the people cannot live properly, then floating clouds will obscure the sun, and the sunlight will appear in the colors of blue, yellow, white, and black." The "Chunqiu Gan Jing Fu" also says: "When the sovereign is weak, the sun's color turns reddish-gray; when the emperor is immersed in corruption, the sun appears as if bleeding." It further states: "When ministers act independently and issue orders on their own, when the concubines dominate and form factions, the sun turns red, and afterwards there will be a great drought, with the ground trembling and shaking."
It is also said that when the colors of the sun, namely green, red, yellow, white, and black, suddenly merge into one and spread over the vast clouds, making it impossible to classify them according to usual patterns, this situation lasting more than thirty days, then solar eclipses will no longer follow regular cycles, indicating a very chaotic situation, which will result in continuous solar eclipses. It is also said that when the夷狄 invade together and military action is about to be taken, the sun appears purple. It is also said that when the sun is red but with a gray tinge, it signifies that the ruler will be swiftly attacked. The "Spring Annals Weave" states that when the sun turns yellow and becomes turbid, with its color spreading out, there must be a favored person from the queen's faction in power within the palace.
The "Xiao Jing Qie" says: "The Sun is gentle and possesses five colors, shining in all directions, which is the normal state; yellow with a white tinge indicates loss of trust and righteousness; red with a blue tinge indicates the loss of brightness; excessive black indicates cruelty and destruction; when various colors multiply and separate, the loss of trust and righteousness leads to negligence." The "Xiao Jing Zuo Qie" says: "When the Sun changes color and displays five hues, the blue color is associated with the people." Jing Fang says: "Observing celestial phenomena without aligning with heavenly will, its variation is the Sun turning red, with red also containing black." Jing Fang says: "When the Sun changes color, blue indicates famine and calamity, red indicates conflict and military disaster, yellow indicates virtuous governance and good deeds, white indicates drought and mourning, black indicates flooding, and half the people die."
It is also said: "The sun appears red like cinnabar, spreading like ash, and within this year, a great general will die in the open field." It is also said: "The sun emits black light, and within sixty days, there will be a great flood that damages the five grains, leaving houses empty and abandoned; the corresponding country in the celestial regions will see grain prices rise tenfold, and this will last for twenty days before stopping." Jing Fang said: "The 'Rescue the Yellow Classic' states: 'When the advice of a virtuous person is adopted, but his merit is concealed, the person then promotes his own good name; its variation is that the sunlight turns yellow. Yellow is the color of harmony, used to symbolize good virtue. When the king has a virtuous minister in court, who finally attains his proper position and preserves the state and ancestral temples; the king himself also realizes that this is not entirely due to his own virtue, and thus openly praises the virtuous minister, and the sunlight returns to normal.'"
The "Shè Chì Jing" says: "If the sovereign does not study the ways of governing the country, he cannot educate his ministers and issue orders that harm the people; then the Sun turns red. If the sovereign listens to virtuous men and treats them as guests, retires to his chamber to reflect on governance, the Sun's color returns to normal." The "Jiu He Jing" says: "If ministers cannot advise the sovereign, their grievances turn downward upon the people, causing the Sun to turn black. The sovereign should be diligent in state affairs, seek out virtuous talents, dismiss arrogant officials near him, and the black color will disappear." The "Jiu Bai Jing" says: "If the sovereign is weak and the whole country is in poverty, the Sun turns white and lasts for sixty days, making recovery difficult; if it has not yet reached sixty days, but the sovereign seeks and employs virtuous ministers, revives military preparedness, displays authority, and punishes wrongdoing, the Sun's color returns to normal."
The Xiasi Diagram says: "The halo around the sun turns yellow and turbid. If it flickers, it indicates wind, rain, and storms; if it remains still, it signifies worries, illness, and sudden enmity." The Jingzhou Divination says: "When the sun rises one pole high above the horizon, if it appears red like blood, it indicates the death of a king. According to the star mansion where the sun is located, it can be determined which country is affected." It also says: "If the sun appears red like blood, the ruler of the corresponding region will die; if the red color first appears but has not yet turned into a reddish-brown, it indicates a general dying in the field." (Original note: According to Wang Yin's "Book of Jin," Prince Sima Yue of the Eastern Sea led four thousand armored soldiers from Yangcheng, and many people in the capital moved to Xuchang for residence. Mingshong was appointed as military司马, and Sima Yue also took charge of the governorship of Yu State. On the fourth day of the third month, the sun turned red, with red light spreading widely, like blood flowing downward. Everywhere it shone turned red, and there were seventy to eighty flying bird-like objects in the sun's surface. On the ninth day, Sima Yue died in Xiangcheng.)
The Xiaojing Neji says: "If a ruler is disrespectful to heaven and earth, and offends the spirits of great mountains and rivers, the sun will appear in the colors of green, white, yellow, and black." Gan De says: "The sun sometimes turns black, green, or yellow, indicating the defeat of the army and the death of the feudal kings." Jing Fang says: "The sun is the essence of the sun's energy, originating in the east and flourishing in the south. Its true color is red. Now it appears green, which is the color of the east's lesser yang. This indicates the ruler is weak and there are no virtuous ministers in the country, leading to such an omen. If this is not corrected, it will result in an eclipse. To correct this, one should manage capable ministers well, appoint the right officials for the three grand ministers and the stars of conferment, employ loyal and upright men, reward those who have merit and ability, appoint generals, and repair the city walls."
Jing Fang's "Yi Zhuan" says: "When the sovereign fails to listen to moral teachings, the state affairs become chaotic and ministers abandon the sovereign, the Sun turns red." (Original note: According to the "Hong Fan," in the first month of the first year of Emperor Cheng of the Han dynasty, on the first day of the month, the Sun and Moon were both in the Encampment mansion, and the Sun turned red. On the twelfth day of the second month, on the first day of the month, the Sun turned red again, and that night the Moon also turned red. On the thirteenth day, at sunrise, the Sun appeared red like blood, with no light, and only slightly brightened after four and a half hours, casting a reddish-yellow light on the ground, returning to normal only after breakfast. At that time, Emperor Cheng neglected morality, and the H Zhao sisters in the harem were corrupt, with inner and outer relatives colluding, and the Wang family monopolizing the government. This was the fulfillment of the omen of the sovereign being expelled and the dynasty's downfall.)
Jing Fang's "Yi Zhuan" says: "When the sovereign is weak and unable to establish laws and regulations to restrain, the Sun turns white for sixty days, and all things wither even without frost." It also says: "When ministers lack both wisdom and courage, and the whole world rises in arms and wages war, the Sun turns white, and the sun's body trembles while the weather turns cold." It also says: "Though the sovereign is weak, if he can still shoulder the state affairs, it can be said that the state will not perish, and at this time the Sun turns white." It also says: "If the sovereign repeatedly commits mistakes but refuses to change, the Sun turns black, and a great wind arises." (Original note: This refers to the sky being cloudless yet the sunlight is obscured.)
Jing Fang said: "When the Sun is accompanied by a green glow, there will be a great wind within twenty days, and the price of grain will rise, with one dou of rice selling for two thousand coins. If this occurs five times within a year, the price of grain will double; if it occurs more than ten times, the people will suffer from many diseases, and the prediction will not be fulfilled within a year." Jing Fang also said: "When the Sun turns green, it indicates the ruler is weak and doomed to decline, because the ruler is ignorant and confused. If the green color contains a yellow tinge, it seems as if there is reluctance to give." The section on the black color is missing from the original text. Gan De said: "When ministers violate the ruler's laws, the Sun appears red like fire, and the country will certainly experience great chaos."
The book "Jingzhou Divination" says: "When the sun appears red, and remains so for three days without returning to normal, the sky will become misty and dark. The darkness during the day is due to the ruler lacking virtue." It also says: "When the sun appears red with a yellow tinge, there will be drought in the month." It further states: "If a yellow light shines upon the land below, it indicates soil disasters and water calamities, with water appearing like flowing blood, and a famous king will die. If there is white light, it signifies the country's destruction, and the ruler will face worries and mourning. If it is green, the state's granaries will be full. If it is red, there will be widespread bleeding. If it is black, there will be many soldiers killed in battle." (Original note: All of the above are divinations regarding changes in the sun's color.) It also says: "If the sun alternates between red and white, each color lasting ten days, it indicates ministers hiding their troops and plotting to harm the ruler." Furthermore, it states: "When the sun appears purple, it is called 'the sun dying,' which is most feared by emperors."
The sun wears light.
The Tai Gong Military Methods say: "When the Star of brightness and prestige appears with a 'Dai' aura above it—the aura is a cloud formation directly above the sun, shaped like a straight line with a slight bulge in the middle, resembling a hat on the sun—it envelops the whole world, indicating a great calamity. This omen will come to fruition within three years."
The sun lacks brightness.
The book "Tai Gong Yin Mi" says: "If the sovereign is not clear-sighted and discerning, and the ministers are not loyal, then the Sun Star loses its inherent brightness. The Moon is also dim, and if one sees such anomalies but does not correct them, calamity will arise. Ministers may desire rebellion, and the sovereign will lose his position. If one can pacify the people, employ the virtuous, support the weak, then there will be no harm." It also says: "In every season, on the days when the heavenly stem is in command, the sun and moon should be clear and bright. The five planets should follow their proper order and shine with a moist and luminous light. These signs indicate harmony between sovereign and ministers. If the sun is not visible during the day and the moon is not visible at night, and the five planets lose their regular course, if the yang energy is blocked and the sunlight is not visible, and if there are continuous days of fierce winds, this is a sign that the sovereign is confused and neglectful, not following the seasons. There will be plague, pests, and frost disaster. Honest ministers will be executed, those who speak falsely will gain power, wars will break out, the people will be in fear and unrest, bandits will be everywhere, and the dead will be left unburied."
The Yellow Emperor's Essentials of Military Strategy says: "Dark clouds hang heavily, the sun and moon have no light, the sun is not visible in the day, the moon is not visible at night, the stars are all obscured by clouds yet there is no rain. This indicates that the ruler and ministers each have secret schemes, and also that the opposing sides are calculating against each other. If the day is dark but the moon appears at night, it signifies the ruler is scheming against the ministers; if the night is dark but the sun appears in the day, it signifies the ministers are scheming against the ruler, with the lower party opposing the upper." It also says: "The Star of brightness and prestige is obscured and lacks light, indicating soldiers are causing internal disturbances."
The *Yellow River Chart: The Emperor's Enjoyment of the Mandate* says: "The sun and moon do not emit light, indicating the downfall of a state and the death of the sovereign, and the fulfillment of this omen will not exceed five years." The *Spring and Autumn Annals: The Responsive Spirits* says: "If there are three failures in matters of yang governance, the sun will lose its light." The *Spring and Autumn Annals: The Responsive Spirits* also says: "If the sovereign's conduct is internally hollow, yet externally appears respectful and solemn, issuing decrees and revising laws, but without a single sincere heart, he will be insulted and oppressed by his ministers. If he remains unaware even in the end, the sun's light will be dim and murky, stagnant and unclear. After that, floods will repeatedly rise, and fog and frost will repeatedly descend."
The Spring and Autumn Annals: A Record of the Spirit's Response states: "When the Sun lacks brightness, it signifies that the ruler's authority is being taken away, and ministers seize power, making false accusations and obscuring the ruler's vision." (Original commentary: According to the Huangfan Records of the Sun and Moon, in the first year of Emperor Yuan of the Han dynasty, in the fourth month, the sunlight was pale and white, and no shadow could be cast. At noon, there was no shadow and no light. That summer was unusually cold, and the Sun regained its brightness only in September. At that time, eunuchs Hong Gong and Shi Xian relied on their power to slander the virtuous, which was exactly the manifestation of a weak ruler who was neither discerning, nor just, nor forward-thinking.)
The Spring and Autumn Annals: A Book of Divine Signs says: "When the queen consort's faction becomes arrogant and powerful, and ministers take advantage of this to act recklessly, the Sun turns yellow and loses its brightness. (Original note: 'Arrogant and powerful' refers to acting recklessly and seizing power; yellow is the color of the earth, which symbolizes the queen consort. They act with wicked schemes, so this is manifested in the heavens, causing the Sun to turn yellow and lose its brightness.) When the ruler trusts one person and hands over power, and ministers act independently and control the laws, the Sun turns dark blue. (Original note: The Sun symbolizes the ruler, and the Moon symbolizes the ministers; the Moon is born from water, which is blue, so this is the manifestation of the mother and son's energies together.) When the son's faction violates the ruler's orders and exercises power in the palace and the state, there will be floating clouds that block the Sun, causing it to turn red and become dark. (Original note: The Sun turns red because the son is born from the father, and father and son share the same energy; now the red cloud blocks the Sun, which is the sign of the son plotting against the father.) After ninety days, the Sun turns yellow, and at noon, a pole will not cast a shadow. At this time, rebellion occurs, and the 'Qian' and 'Er' clouds appear repeatedly around the Sun. 'Qian' is a cloud that is green and red, curved outward, with a horizontal hook-like shape in the middle. 'Er' is a cloud that appears on both sides of the Sun, small like ears. Yellow clouds entering the capital indicate the arrogance of the queen consort's faction; if it is blue, there will be frost and violent hail, which is the sign of trusting one person; if it is red, there will be two suns fighting, stagnant yin energy, and gathering fog. (Original note: Gathering fog indicates the fog is thick and dark, which is the sign of the son violating the ruler's orders.)"
The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Book of the Spirit's Response says: "When the Star of brightness and prestige remains dim for a long time, it indicates that the Son of Heaven is obscured and blocked; each should follow their own category to self-admonish, thus dispelling the calamity." The Spring and Autumn: Kongyan Tu says: "When the qilin fight, the Star of brightness and prestige has no light." The Spring and Autumn Wei says: "When the light of the sun is lost, it signifies the betrayal of the feudal lords; if the sun does not shine for thirty days, all kinds of calamities will arise together." The Xiao Jing Nei Ji Tu says: "If the Star of brightness and prestige remains dark without light after noon without cause, it indicates the ruler is not discerning, and rain will fall across the land, also indicating military affairs." Gan De says: "If the sun shines for a whole year without any light, it will be when a ruler dies, or when the ruler faces calamity within a single day." The Xiao Jing Nei Ji Tu says: "When the ruler is arrogant and lazy, the sun and moon lose their light."
The Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety says: "When the Sun rises two poles high in the east and appears alone without light, it is called 'day illness'; when it is about to set and still two poles high but appears alone without light, it is called 'day death'. Day death signifies the death of the sovereign, and day illness signifies the illness of the sovereign." Gan De says: "When this phenomenon of no light occurs for one day, it will be verified within ten days; if it occurs for two days, it will be verified within a month; if it occurs for a month, it will be verified within a year, and there will be military affairs within the same year." (Original book note: According to Wei Zhao's explanation, 'no light' refers to only being able to see the form of the sun.)
The book "Jingzhou Divination" says: "When the Sun has risen two poles high or is about to set two poles high, and its color is red without brightness, the corresponding star mansion will experience misfortune; there will certainly be military calamities and deaths. If this occurs in spring, it indicates drought, and the disaster will occur in June." The "Tao Gong Military Strategy" says: "When the Sun is about to set two poles high without brightness, the month will surely bring death. Another interpretation suggests it indicates worry and trouble." Jing Fang says: "When the Sun is about to set two poles high and is alone without brightness, it indicates the death of the king in the corresponding star mansion. If the Sun appears for three consecutive days without brightness, the country will not flourish." Gan De says: "When the Sun rises in the morning without brightness, it is a manifestation of yang energy showing virtue; if it is not bright in the morning and also lacks brightness when setting, this is called yang energy showing punishment and execution."
Gan De said: "If the sovereign and prime minister do not govern according to the order of the four seasons, punishments are not clear, ministers secretly plot evil schemes, exclude the virtuous and suppress the capable, then the sun and moon will lose their brightness. If one sees such flaws but still does not change his ways, the country will have poor harvests of the five grains, the six domestic animals will not thrive, the people will act disorderly, and bandits will rise up together." Gan De also said: "If the sun does not shine when it rises, it indicates the sovereign is ill. Another interpretation is that the sovereign has wronged his ministers, and the people hold grievances in their hearts." Gan De further said: "If the sun loses its true color, the country it shines upon will not flourish." Jing Fang's "Yi Yao Zhan" said: "If the sovereign is not clear-sighted, the sun will not shine."
Jing Fang said: "When the clouds in the sky have completely dispersed, but the red sun has no light, if it lasts thirty days, the ruler will suffer great military calamities and perish; if it lasts fifty days, military conflicts will arise, there will be severe famine and the people will flee; if it lasts seventy days, there will be great calamities, the ruler will die, military conflicts will arise, and famine will be severe; if it lasts ninety days, the state and its institutions will perish; if it lasts one hundred and twenty days, cities and towns will be reduced to ruins and perish." Jing Fang said: "When the sun and moon lose their brilliance, it indicates there is no ruler in the country, the people are restless, and there will be military conflicts throughout the land." Jing Fang said: "When the sun loses its light, it indicates the ruler's commands cannot be implemented, the people will suffer from hunger and flee." Jing Fang said: "When the sun remains dark for an unexpected long period, it indicates the world is in darkness, and the state and its institutions will be destroyed and perish." Jing Fang said: "When both the sun and moon have no light, it will lead to dryness in the deep valleys, collapse of mountains and hills, and this celestial phenomenon is most feared by the emperor."
Dong Zhongshu's "Zaiyi Zhan" says: "If the sun suddenly turns white without light, the ruler will not die, but the state will not flourish. If the sun turns blue without light, it indicates that the people will eat each other, and the ruler will leave his position. If the sun turns red without light, it indicates that there will be great warfare and a severe drought. If the sun turns yellow without light, it indicates that the rulers will lose virtue, the famous mountains will collapse, and the ground will shake. If the sun turns black without light, it indicates that the ministers will take over the government." The "Qi Jing" says: "If red clouds appear in the sunlight, the disorder and harm will come from the great ministers close to the ruler." Jing Fang's "Yi Yao Zhan" says: "If the sun turns red without light, it indicates that the ruler will have misfortune."
