The sun is in the southern seven stars and eats the eighth.

Gan De said: If an eclipse occurs in the Well mansion, it indicates that the state of Qín will not submit; if the eclipse does not fully cover the sun, then the plot will not succeed; throughout the country there will be a great drought, and the people will flee hundreds of miles. Gan De also said: If the sun is eclipsed in the position of the Well mansion and the Ghost mansion, it is a warning about the officials responsible for the emperor's food and provisions. Chen Zhuo said: If an eclipse occurs in the Well mansion, it indicates internal disorder in the country and harsh laws. (Note from the original text citing "Sheng Xuanxiang Shuo": In the second year of Xianhe of Emperor Cheng of Jin, on the fifth month, on the day of the new moon, an eclipse occurred in the Well mansion. This was an omen related to the female ruler; the next year, the empress dowager indeed died from anxiety and pressure.)
The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Manifestation of the Spirit says: If an eclipse occurs in the Ghost Mansion, it indicates that the ruler of the country will not be at peace, and the ministers will change their clothing colors; one interpretation says that the king of the state of Qin will bear this omen; another says it should befall the empress and high-ranking ministers. Gan De says: If an eclipse occurs in the Ghost Mansion, it indicates that the ruler of the country will be uneasy; if it is near, the effect will be within one year; if it is distant, within three years. The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Manifestation of the Spirit says: If an eclipse occurs in the Willow Mansion, it indicates that the king will be ill and unable to reside in the palace. Shi Shen says: If an eclipse occurs in the Willow Mansion, it indicates that the official in charge of the royal kitchen will have worries. Gan De says: If an eclipse occurs in the Willow Mansion and the Seven Stars, it warns of trouble for the officials responsible for gates, roads, and bridges. (Original note: Like the modern position of the Attendant of the Palace Gate.)
The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Book of Sensible Spirits says: If an eclipse occurs in the Willow Mansion or the Seven Stars Mansion (the original text mistakenly writes '卯' instead of '柳'), it indicates that the yang position in the south is diminished, and the king will no longer bestow robes upon his ministers. If the king can follow the heavenly will by holding a sacrifice at the outskirts of the capital, dismissing the Grand Master of Rituals, and putting the guilty into prison, there will be no calamity. Shi Shen says: If an eclipse occurs in the Willow Mansion or the Seven Stars Mansion, it indicates that a minister responsible for bridges and gates will be dismissed. The Spring and Autumn Annals: The Book of Sensible Spirits says: If an eclipse occurs in the Extended Net Mansion, it indicates that the king has lost propriety and refuses to personally worship the ancestral temples. He should quickly dismiss the Grand Master of Rituals and replace him with the Minister of Justice. If this is not done, the country will not be at peace, and the time of the disaster will be in the twelfth and fifth months. Gan De says: If an eclipse occurs when the sun is in the Willow Mansion (another name for the Willow Mansion) or the Extended Net Mansion, it warns of ministers in charge of mountains, rivers, lakes, and marshes. (Original note: This is similar to the current Water Balance Superintendent.)
The Huangdi Zhan says: If an eclipse occurs in the Wings mansion, the king should dismiss the Minister of Rites and replace him with an official in charge of law enforcement; if the king is virtuous, this eclipse will not cause harm, but there will be drought in that year. Shi Shen says: If an eclipse occurs in the Wings mansion, it indicates the king has lost propriety and is unwilling to personally worship the ancestral temples. Gan De says: If an eclipse occurs in the Wings mansion, it signifies loyal ministers are falsely accused and those who speak truthfully and uphold righteousness will die, but this will not happen within the same year. Gan De also says: If the sun eclipses while in the Wings and Chariot mansions, one should be cautious about officials who manage the chariots. (Original note: This refers to officials such as the Master of Carriages and those in charge of riding, like the officers of the cavalry.)
The River Chart Sacred Harmony Symbol says: When an eclipse occurs in the Chariot Mansion, it indicates there will be mourning within the country, and the state should issue an amnesty decree to eliminate this calamity. Gan De says: When an eclipse occurs in the Chariot Mansion, it signifies the death of a high-ranking minister; another view is that the empress will not be at peace, and the period should be one hundred and eighty days. The Sea Divination says: When an eclipse occurs in the Chariot Mansion, it indicates the death of a prince or marquis; if the king can eliminate the calamity by issuing an amnesty decree, it will turn into peace; another view is that the country will have troubles and certainly will have mourning.
Saving the Solar Eclipse: Nine Methods
The Spring and Autumn Annals of the Spirit and Symbol says: The method to avert an eclipse is for the Son of Heaven to sit facing south, holding scrolls and classics, and examining the emerging troubles in the nine provinces. He should cut off the source, correct the root, and investigate each category, ordering the regions to report anomalies. Local magistrates should regulate affairs, recruit talents, and recommend scholars, thus cutting off the root of disorder. This is the method of prevention. Therefore, when an eclipse or great flood occurs, drums should be beaten, and sacrifices made at the earth god altar. The reason for sacrificing to the earth god is that the earth god is the master of yin energy. Wrapping the earth altar with red silk and beating drums to denounce evil is to use yang to suppress yin.
According to a commentary from the original text citing the "Zuo Zhuan," on June 25th of the 25th year of Lu Zhuang Gong, on the first day of the month, there was an eclipse of the sun. Drums were beaten, and sacrifices were offered at the ancestral temple for worship, which was against the usual rites. Only when an eclipse occurred on the first day of the first lunar month should sacrifices be presented at the ancestral temple and drums beaten in the court. In that autumn there was a great flood, and drums were also beaten, with sacrifices offered at the city gates, which again was against the usual rites. For all natural disasters, only offerings of silk and cloth should be made, without sacrifices. In the 15th year of Lu Wen Gong, on June 2nd of the first month, there was an eclipse of the sun. The Son of Heaven removed the elaborate food offerings and stopped music, beating drums at the ancestral temple. The feudal lords offered silk and cloth at the ancestral temple and beat drums in the court, using this method to demonstrate the lesson of serving the gods, so that the people would understand the distinctions of rank when serving their rulers. This has been passed down since ancient times and is a method to establish authority.
The Spring and Autumn Records of the Manifestation of the Essence says: The method to eliminate and resolve anomalies is to set up a hall of illumination at the southern suburb. When the sun is about to be eclipsed and the light gradually turns dark and bluish, solemnly dispatch a great general and the Three Dukes, according to the faults corresponding to this anomaly, to pray to Heaven: "The minister of the Son of Heaven, so and so, has carefully accepted the trust of the Heavenly Emperor. He has already withdrawn from the main hall and the main residence, reflecting on his own faults, offering sacrifices of silk and cloth to the bright sun, simplifying all government orders, rectifying affairs, abolishing illegal practices, removing harsh prohibitions; not daring to directly convey the royal command, but specially sending ministers to carefully present the matter. We have already cut off the sources of punishments that are close and harmful to the state, continuing the ancestral achievements, striving to promote literature and education, seeking to clarify the great way, wishing to improve governance to honor the ancestral temples, making up for past mistakes, supporting the present, striving to open a beautiful era, widely promoting the bright sun, to revive this supreme treasure of the sun."
After the prayers were completed, the officials returned to report to the Son of Heaven. Three days later, the Son of Heaven returned to the palace and sent envoys to issue an edict to the feudal lords to inquire about their faults. He would recommend virtuous scholars, investigate wickedness, resolve wrongful cases, and promote moral education. Those who refused to carry out these orders should carefully examine and correct their own conduct, ensuring they assist the sovereign in accomplishing these tasks. In this way, the Son of Heaven would gain a favorable outcome. The "Spring and Autumn Records of the Spirit and Phenomena" states: If an eclipse occurs on the new moon day, the ministers should rectify their private misconduct, dismiss the concubines, and reflect on their own faults within the palace. If an eclipse occurs on the second day, the king should dismiss the dukes and marquises, as well as the officials assisting the states and prefectures, allowing the tyrannical and unrestrained to correct themselves. If an eclipse occurs on the last day of the month, the court officials should be rectified, and the lavish feasts should be replaced with simple vegetarian food.
The Zhou Li · Di Gong Shu Tu says: When there is an eclipse of the sun, a decree is issued and the king personally beats the drum. (The original commentary cites Zheng Xuan saying: When there is an eclipse of the sun or moon, the king must personally beat the drum.) The Li Ji · Hun Yi says: If the education of men is not properly carried out, and the affairs of the yang are not properly managed, heaven will send a sign of punishment, and the sun will be eclipsed. Therefore, when there is a solar eclipse, the Son of Heaven wears plain clothes, arranges the duties of the six officials, and removes the evils in the yang aspect of the world. (The original commentary cites Zheng Xuan saying: 'Zhe' means punishment.)
The Guiliang Zhuan says: When an eclipse occurs, drums should be beaten and sacrifices offered at the earth god altar. Beating drums conforms to propriety, but offering sacrifices does not. The Son of Heaven performs rituals to avert an eclipse, setting up five banners, displaying five kinds of weapons, and beating five sets of drums; the feudal lords set up three banners, display three kinds of weapons, and beat three sets of drums; the great officers beat the doors, and the commoners beat wooden杵. (Original commentary: This explains the hierarchical reduction in ritual according to rank when performing eclipse avertances. Taking the door as an instrument is because the door opens and closes, embodying the principle of yin and yang; the杵 is a tool used for pounding rice and grains in sacrifice, with its rising and falling motion also embodying the principle of yin and yang.)
The Star Transmission says: The sun governs virtue, and the moon governs punishment; when the sun is eclipsed, one should reform and clarify virtue and governance, and when the moon is eclipsed, one should correct punishments. The Hongfan Astronomical Records say: Whenever there is a solar eclipse, if one changes their conduct and reforms virtue and governance, the calamity will be dispelled; if one refuses to change, the consequence will appear within three years; if it is not changed within three years, it will extend to six years; if not changed within six years, it will extend to nine years; by the ninth year, the calamity will have fully developed. The Western Jin historian Sima Biao's Five Phases Chronicle says: When the ruler's way is lacking, he is oppressed by yin energy, so a solar eclipse signifies that yang energy is unable to overcome yin energy. If the ruler can change his approach and cultivate virtue and govern affairs, the calamity and misfortune will be eliminated.
Jing Fang said in his "Discourse on Catastrophes and Anomalies": If a ruler is arrogant and self-satisfied, monopolizing wisdom and being invaded by yin energy, there will be an eclipse of the sun; if not remedied, there will certainly be a minister who plots against the sovereign. The method of remedy is: the sovereign should be humble in heart, honor the virtuous, accept advice, appoint the virtuous to positions and the wise to receive rewards, and then the disaster of the solar eclipse will be dispelled. Jing Fang said: When a total solar eclipse occurs, it signifies that those below plot against the sovereign. The method of remedy is to establish seven matters of response, correct the records and classics, clarify the classics, eliminate evil deeds, cultivate oneself, and follow the virtuous. Then the state will be stable and the state will be peaceful.
In the Western Han dynasty, Dong Zhongshu in his "Zaiyi Dui" said: an eclipse of the sun is caused by excessive阴气 accumulating, gradually taking away the clarity of the sovereign, leading to failure in the governance of the state, with ministers usurping the sovereign's authority, entering and leaving the court to act in private interests. Thus, although power remains in the hands of the sovereign, moral teachings cannot be spread, and the common people often harbor resentment. The way to respond is to divide the power of favored ministers, reduce their privileges of enjoying luxurious food and drink, not neglecting advice, daring to point out great evils, and the fundamental solution lies in appointing virtuous people; in this way, disasters will not occur. Dong Zhongshu said: an eclipse of the sun is caused by wicked ministers obscuring the sovereign's governance. Even if there are no rebellious ministers, it will certainly lead to the invasion of foreign tribes and the downfall of the state. Expelling wicked ministers, cutting off evil influences, preventing the abuse of power, balancing authority, and using moral governance to eliminate it, it will not become a harm.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When an eclipse occurs, one must carefully examine the direction from which it begins and the star mansion it corresponds to, and thus determine which state should bear the responsibility. Good fortune or misfortune will then fall upon that state. Therefore, a wise ruler, upon seeing such an omen, will correct his own conduct, cultivate virtue, approach the virtuous, and consult the elderly and wise, sharing their concerns. In this way, calamities can be averted and blessings can be attracted. Thus it is said: When good fortune is about to come, if one receives it with arrogance and carelessness, it will turn into misfortune; but if one receives it with virtue, misfortune will turn into good fortune. Therefore, they immediately perform rituals of appeasement and worship to remove misfortune and invite blessings.
Yu Zhi's "Deciding Doubts" says: All those participating in the ritual to avert a solar eclipse are required to wear headscarves to enhance the yang energy. When the sun is about to be obscured, the Son of Heaven changes into plain garments, withdraws from the main hall, and strict precautions are taken both inside and outside the palace. The Grand Astrologers wait on the spiritual platform, and as soon as they observe any change in the sun, they immediately beat the drum. Upon hearing the drum, the attendants all wear red headscarves and carry swords, thus the calamity can be dispelled.

Moon Divination One
The name of the month in the system of divination.
The Western Jin dynasty's Huang Fu Mi wrote in his "Nian Li" that the moon is the master of all yin energies, its radiance is contained within but reflects images, shining at night, hence called "night light". The "Book of Changes · Shuo Gua" says that the Kan trigram symbolizes the moon. The "He Tu Di Lian Xi" says that the moon is the essence of metal. The "Chun Qiu Gan Jing Fu" says that the moon is the essence of yin energy, the order of the earth. The "Guang Ya" says that "night light" is another name for the moon. The "Tian Gong Shu" (i.e., "Records of the Grand Historian · Tian Gong Book") says that the essence of Tai Yin rises to form the moon; the moon is the yin energy between heaven and earth, also the essence of metal. The Eastern Jin dynasty's Wang Jia (given name Zi Nian) wrote in his "Shi Yi Ji" that the water crystal of Ying Zhou condensed into the moon.
The Li Ji says: "Yue" means deficiency. The Ji Ran, transmitted by Fan Li's lineage, says that the moon belongs to water. The Huainanzi says that the moon is the messenger of heaven; it is the essence of water vapor condensed into form. The Han Shu records Li Xin's memorial stating that the moon is the leader among those who follow the yin energy, symbolizing the empress, ministers, and feudal lords. The Eastern Han scholar Zhang Heng's Ling Xian says that the moon is the master of yin essence, formed by the accumulation of yin energy. The moon contains a rabbit and a toad, both belonging to the yin category, because yin numbers are even. Originally, Hou Yi obtained the elixir of immortality from Xi Wang Mu, and Chang'e stole it and flew into the moon, thus taking refuge in the moon, which is referred to as the toad. The Chunqiu Yan Kong Tu says that the toad is the spirit of the moon.
The Western Jin dynasty scholar Yang Quan in his work "Wulunli" said that the moon is the essence of yin energy, with a round shape and a clear texture. It appears visible only because it receives the light from the Sun. The part of the moon not illuminated by the Sun is called "po." Therefore, on the full moon day, the Sun and the Moon are opposite each other, and people are in the middle, able to see the fully illuminated side of the moon, hence its round shape. On the days of the first and last quarters, the Sun shines from the side, and people view it from the side, so half of the moon is illuminated and half is "po." On the new moon and the dark moon days, the Sun illuminates the outer side of the moon, while people are on the inner side, so the moonlight is not visible.
The moon travels through two degrees.
The forty fractions of the day amount to seven hundred forty-three and a remainder of one, and the cycle of the moon's slow and fast movement comes to an end and begins again. When the moon appears in the east in the early morning of the new moon, this is called "side concealment" and indicates it is moving slowly; when it appears in the west in the evening of the last moon, this is called "tiào" and indicates it is moving quickly. When the slow and fast movements are averaged, it is called "ping." The average speed is thirteen degrees and twenty-five and a half parts of a degree per day. After twenty-seven days and one thousand three hundred forty parts of a degree and a remainder of one, the moon completes one full orbit around the sky. In one year, the moon orbits the sky thirteen times, and in a leap year, fourteen times. When the moon and the sun meet at the same degree, this is called the new moon.
The Sun and Moon both move eastward; the Sun moves slowly, while the Moon moves quickly. After twenty-nine days and one thousand three hundred forty parts of a day, seven hundred and eleven of which, the Moon completes a full circle around the sky and catches up with the Sun again. This is the number of days between two consecutive new moons. The "Chunqiu Yuanmingbao" states that both the Sun and Moon move to the right, and the distance they travel to complete one full circle around the sky is twenty-three ten-thousand li.
The River Chart says: The sun, moon, and five planets travel along the same path. When passing through the constellations of Dou, Niu, Xu, Wei, Yingshi, Dongbei, Kui, Wei, Mao, they pass south of them, at a distance of nine feet; when passing through Bi constellation, they pass north of it by seven feet; when passing through Zi and Can constellations, they pass north of them by thirteen feet; they pass straight through Dongjing, emerging from six feet south of Yu鬼 constellation; they emerge from six feet north of Liu constellation; they emerge from thirteen feet north of Qiang and Yi constellations; they emerge from thirteen feet north of Zhen and Chen constellations (the original text says 'three days' but should be 'three feet'); they pass straight through Jiao and Kang constellations, emerging from two feet south of Di constellation; they pass through the two stars between Fang constellation; they emerge from two feet north of Xin constellation; they emerge from ten feet north of 'wu'; they emerge from six feet north of Ji constellation; they pass straight through Nan Dou and reach Dou constellation. This is the regular path of the sun, moon, and five planets.
The Luo Writing says: The sun, moon, and five stars travel within the left angle star; they pass four feet outside the left kang star; they pass through the two stars on either side of theRoot mansion; they pass outside the two stars between theRoom mansion; they travel within the heart mansion six feet; they travel within the tail mansion eighteen feet; they travel within theWinnowing Basket mansion twelve feet; they pass through the middle of the斗柄 one foot; they pass through the middle of the牵牛; they travel four feet outside the须女; they travel six feet outside theEmptiness mansion; they travel thirteen feet outside theRooftop mansion; they travel sixteen feet outside the营室; they travel thirteen feet outside the东壁; they travel thirteen feet outside theLegs mansion; they travel nine feet outside theBond mansion; they travel eleven feet outside theStomach mansion; they travel five feet outside theHairy Head mansion; they pass through the left angle of theNet mansion; they travel within theTurtle Beak mansion six feet; they travel within theThree Stars mansion eighteen feet; they pass through the middle of theWell mansion; they travel fourteen feet outside theGhost mansion; they travel nine feet within theWillow mansion (the original text says '九天' which should be '九尺'); they travel fifteen feet within the七星; they travel eighteen feet within theExtended Net mansion; they travel sixteen feet within theWings mansion; they travel thirteen feet within theChariot mansion. All instances here where it says 'in the upper' refer to the north. This is the correct path of the sun, moon, and five stars.
The moon's movement is characterized by its waxing and waning phases, which are divided into three stages.
Shi Shen said: When an enlightened ruler is in power, the moon follows its regular course. But if the ruler is incompetent and ministers hold power, the moon deviates from its normal path. When ministers dominate and act against justice, pursuing private interests, the administration of military and legal affairs loses its standard, and the moon alternately drifts south and north. When a female ruler relies on the power of her maternal relatives to seize authority, the moon sometimes leads and sometimes lags, showing the phenomena of 'Tiao' and 'Nu'. These are all the faults caused by the improper application of punishment and virtue between the ruler and ministers. For any deviation from the norm, one should judge the fortune and misfortune according to specific circumstances. If the moon moves quickly, it indicates that the ruler applies lenient punishment; if it moves slowly, it indicates that the ruler applies severe punishment. The moon and the sun have opposite trends in their speed, and thus the affairs they presage are also opposite. Therefore, when a ruler encounters abnormal lunar phenomena, he should reduce punishments, promote virtue, spread benevolence, and grant general amnesty. Therefore, the Spring and Autumn Annals record instances of leniency in times of calamity and misfortune ('Sheng zai si she' is from the Book of Documents, the Shun Classic).
In the "Hong Fan Zhuan" by Liu Xiang of the Western Han dynasty, it is said that when the moon appears in the west on a dark day, this is called "Tiao"; and when the moon appears in the east on a new moon day, this is called "Ce Ni". The occurrence of "Tiao" indicates that princes and marquises act slowly and their decrees are lax, thus the yang moves slowly while the yin moves quickly. The occurrence of "Ce Ni" indicates that princes and marquises act strictly and their decrees are urgent, thus the yang moves quickly while the yin moves slowly. The term "Shu" refers to ministers being arrogant and controlling the government; the term "Su" refers to ministers being overly fearful.
Liu Xin said: The term "shu" refers to princes and dukes acting solely according to their own will and dominating the government, forcing ministers into a state of urgency, hence the moon moves quickly. The term "su" refers to princes and dukes being timid and hesitant in speech, unwilling to take responsibility, allowing ministers to act recklessly, hence the moon moves slowly. The "Spring and Autumn Annals: The Movement of the Stars and the Pole" states: When the power of the ruler is concentrated in the hands of the maternal relatives, the factions of the concubines act beyond their proper bounds and cause harm to the court, the moon appears particularly full. Jing Fang's "Yi Fei Hou" says: On the eighth day of the moon's cycle, it should be at its zenith. If on the fifth or sixth day it has already reached the zenith, this indicates the presence of an army in formation and the possibility of a great battle.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If the moon moves too quickly, there will be urgent matters throughout the realm. It also says: If the moon moves too fast, wicked people will rise to power; if the moon moves slower than usual, official affairs will be delayed and accumulate. It also says: If on the fifth day of the month, the moon is already in the middle heaven at dusk, this indicates a great outbreak of military conflict and a sharp rise in grain prices. It also says: On the eighth day of a big month or the seventh day of a small month, the moon is in the middle heaven at dusk, which is the normal course; if it exceeds this, there will be military conflict, and if it falls short, there will be mourning events.
The moon moves through the yin and yang of the four.
Jing Fang's "Discourse on Portents and Anomalies" says: If the ruler favors the use of wicked and perverse people and there are no loyal ministers in the court, the moon will deviate from its proper path. Ban Gu's "Book of Han · Astronomical Records" states: If the moon loses its measure and runs erratically, if it goes beyond the yang path, it indicates drought and wind; if it goes beyond the yin path, it indicates cold and rain. Jing Fang's "Omen Divination" says: If the moon moves southward, it indicates drought; if it moves northward, it indicates flooding; if it moves straight along the central path between the Heavenly Gate and the Four Stars of the Room Mansion, it indicates great peace throughout the land, abundant harvests of grain, and the ruler's prolonged life.
The River Chart says: When the moon completes its cycle in a year, if it has not passed three times between the Hairy Head mansion and the Net mansion, there will be military conflict the following year. Xi Meng says: If the moon does not follow the path indicated by the East Salt and West Salt star groups, there will certainly be bandits. Jing Fang's "Book of Changes Divination" says: If the moon is biased toward the north during the first eight days of the month, the country with yin will lose territory; if the moon is biased toward the north during the last eight days of the month, the country with yang will lose territory.
The moonlight shines on five.
The "Yi Meng Qi Shu" says: When the way of a minister is cultivated and clear, the moon becomes bright and radiant. The "Gao Zong Zhan" says: When the moon rises, its light is grand and illuminates the world, indicating that a wise ruler will emerge to govern the world. The "Shang Shu Kao Ling Yao" says: When the five policies are not lost, the sun and moon become bright; the five policies refer to the governance of the four seasons plus that of the season of the great summer. The "Li Wei Han Wen Jia" says: When the ruler's way is respected and he can issue commands on his own, the sun and moon become pure and bright.
The Huangdi Zhan says: In a country with virtue, when the sun and moon pass through its territory, they appear exceptionally bright, indicating that the sovereign will have good fortune, prosperity, and the people will live in peace and happiness. Sun's "Ruiying Tu" says: When the sovereign does not entrust power to his ministers, the sun and moon will shine brightly. Gan De says: When the moon passes through the Heart Mansion, it is clear and bright, its light dazzling, which is a sign that the Star of the messenger of illness enlightens the sovereign's mind, surely bringing long-lasting blessings.
The moon changes color six times.
The *Yellow River Chart* says: Moonlight shines as bright as a spread-out torch; the country it guards will soon establish a king and a high minister. (The original text says "sunlight," but according to the heading and meaning of this section, it should refer to moonlight.) *Jing Fang's *Book of Omens* says: If the moon changes color, a green hue signifies famine and plague, a red hue signifies conflict and warfare, a yellow hue signifies virtuous governance and celebration, a white hue signifies drought and mourning, and a black hue signifies flooding, with half the people dying. *Jing Fang's *Book of Omens* also says: If the ruler is young and weak, the moon will appear green.
Jing Fang's "Yi Fei Hou" says: On the eighth day when the moon begins to brighten, the color should be as dark as a black rabbit; if it truly appears this way, the grain price will rise in the first half of the month. If it does not appear, the grain price will be cheap in the first half. If this color appears on the eighth day of the month's end, the grain price will rise in the second half. If it does not appear, it will be a bountiful year, and the grain price will be cheap in the second half. The "Jingzhou Zhan" says: If the moon's color is as red as cinnabar, it indicates the death of a general in the field; it also says that if the moon's color is as red as blood, it indicates the death of a king. To determine which country is affected, one should refer to the star mansion corresponding to the moon's position.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon first appears, if it shows a yellow color, the defending side will suffer calamity; if on the twenty-eighth day of the month the moon appears yellow, the invading force will suffer calamity. The *He Tu Di Lan Xi* says: When the moon sets and appears yellow, the defending side will suffer; when it rises and appears yellow with a reddish tinge, the invading force will be punished; if the red color persists for three consecutive days, the defending side will achieve victory in battle. The *He Tu Di Lan Xi* also says: On the third day after the moon first appears, if the moon's surface seems to be covered with a thin layer of silk, the region corresponding to that area will become empty; all the military forces within the territory will be deployed outside, but the defending side will not be able to win the battle.
The moonlight is very bright on the seventh day.
Xi Meng's divination says: When the moon is newly born and its light is bright and grand, it indicates that a female ruler will hold the government. Jing Fang's "Yi Fei Hou" says: When the moon's light spreads like spread-out thorns, the country it governs will have to replace its ruler; if it appears three times in the region corresponding to Qi, then the country will have to appoint a general and a high minister. The "Jingzhou Zhuan" says: When the moon passes the waxing phase and its light becomes particularly bright, it signifies that the ruler's virtue and authority are insufficient to restrain his ministers, and the ministers will seize power, with the people turning their loyalty from the ruler to his ministers.
When the moon is not bright, there are eight phenomena.
The Tai Gong Yin Mi says: If the sovereign is not clear-sighted, the ministers will not be loyal, so the moon loses its brightness; when the moon is not clear, it shows a change, and if a change occurs but no rituals are performed to appease it, calamity will follow, and the ministers will want to rebel, while the sovereign loses his position. The method to appease is: to comfort the people, appoint the virtuous, and support the weak; if this is not done, it will become a harm.
The Yellow Emperor's Secret of Military Divination states: When the Yin energy is stagnant and the sky is dark and obscured, the sun and moon lose their brightness, the sun cannot be seen during the day, the moon cannot be seen at night, and the stars are all covered by clouds yet no rain falls. This indicates that both the ruler and the minister harbor secret schemes, and the two armies are facing each other in a stalemate, secretly plotting against each other. If the day is dark and the moon appears at night, it signifies that the ruler is scheming against the minister. If the night is dark and the sun appears during the day, it signifies that the minister is scheming against the ruler, and the lower ranks will rebel against the higher authority.
Gan De said: If the sovereign and the prime minister do not issue decrees in accordance with the order of the four seasons, and punishments are not appropriate, the ministers will conspire secretly, distant themselves from the virtuous, and suppress the talented. Then the sun and moon will lose their brightness, showing signs of defects and censure. If this is not remedied, the country will suffer from poor harvests of the five grains, the six domestic animals will not thrive, the people will be discontented, and bandits will rise up together. The "Yellow River Chart: The Emperor's View of the World" says: If the sun and moon have no light, it indicates the country will perish and the king will die, and this will happen within no more than five years. The "Xiao Jing Nei Ji Tu" says: If the sovereign is arrogant and haughty, the sun and moon will lose their brightness.
The Jing Fang's Divination says: When the moon appears large but without light, it indicates there is no true ruler in the country, the people cannot find peace, and there will be military conflicts. The Jing Fang's Divination also says: When the moon is dark and lacks light, there will be dried-up deep pools, collapsing mountains, and it will be unfavorable for the ruler. The Yellow River Chart's Imperial View says: When the moon is large but without light, it indicates the soldiers defending the territory will suffer casualties and the battle will not be won. The High Ancestor's Divination says: When the moon is large but without light, surrounded cities will not surrender; when the moon is small but without light, the surrounded cities will surrender. Jing Fang's Demonstration Divination says: When the moon loses its light, ministers may not start a rebellion, but the moral teachings and government orders will not be effectively implemented, leading to famine among the people and the country's downfall. Jing Fang's Easy Flying Divination says: When the moon does not emit light, it indicates the death of a person of high status. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the moon first appears without light, it indicates the death of a ruler below. Jing Fang's Easy Flying Divination also says: When the moon first appears without light, it indicates the death of a gentleman without cause.
The moon rabbit does not appear on the ninth day.
The River Chart: The Emperor's View says: If the jade rabbit and the toad are not visible in the moon, it indicates that there are no competent officials in the world. The Jingzhou Divination says: If the jade rabbit and the toad in the moon disappear, it signifies that the country will lose its female ruler; another interpretation is that the women in the palace will not be at peace. The River Chart says: If the toad leaves the moon, it foretells great chaos in the world. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When on the full moon day the toad in the moon is not visible, it indicates that the country corresponding to the moon's position will experience mountain collapses, great floods, the collapse of cities, and the migration of the people, as well as the loss of the ruler; certainly, the palace will be in disorder.
