Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If there is a cloud shaped like a wooden pestle, seven feet long, rising straight toward the country corresponding to the moon's position in the star system, it indicates that the ruler of that country will die. Jing Fang's *Yi Fei Hou* says: If white clouds form the shape of a wooden pestle, seven feet long, rising straight toward the country corresponding to the moon's position in the star system, it indicates the death of the ruler; if the handle of the pestle is straight and faces the moon, it indicates the death of the queen; if the pestle is inserted into the moon, the queen will suffer the calamity; if there is a 'ear' on the moon, a short light appendage beside the moon, it indicates that the defending party will face urgent difficulties.

The *Yellow River Chart: Imperial View of Delight* says: When the moon first rises, if there is a cloud stopping within the moon's circle, forming the shape of an animal or beast, it is called "Qi Lou." If it appears in the east on a Jia or Yi day, the east will bear the consequence; if it appears in the south on a Bing or Ding day, the south will bear the consequence; if it appears in the center on a Wu or Ji day, the center will bear the consequence; if it appears in the west on a Geng or Xin day, the west will bear the consequence; if it appears in the north on a Ren or Gui day, the north will bear the consequence. What is meant by "bearing the consequence" is to suffer the calamity it brings.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If there is cloud resembling people following one after another under the moon, this is called "evil formation." It indicates that someone within the royal court will be punished for a crime, and also signifies the division of territory. The *Jingzhou Divination* also says: If there are clouds within the moon's circle, resembling a person walking, it indicates a minister plotting against the sovereign. If two figures are fighting, the guest force will win. If three figures appear, it signifies the disruption of the fundamental principles governing heaven and earth, and the ruling power must be replaced. The *He River Chart Imperial Survey* says: If there are three clouds of white clouds, as large as wooden mallets, beside the moon, blocking the moon's circle, this portends a period of sixty days. It indicates warfare outside the realm, the defeat of the army, and the death of the general.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon first rises, if there are dark clouds crossing the moon's disk, this is called "Ji Yun." Within three days, there will be unusual rain that harms people, and enemy troops will arrive. The *He Tu Di Lan Xi* says: If there are many red clouds around the moon, shaped like human heads, this indicates frequent major battles; white clouds indicate wind, black clouds indicate rain. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If red clouds and black clouds intermingle and cover the moon, the country facing the moon will suffer military defeat. The *He Tu Di Lan Xi* says: If there is one white cloud, two black clouds, and one苍 cloud around the moon, all thick and large like thick cloth, blocking and passing through the moon's disk, this indicates the occurrence of siege and the capture of cities.

The "Gaozong Zhàn" says: When a blue cloud surrounds the moon on both sides, this is called "zéi hài," indicating the king will suffer calamity, and that year the five grains will not be ripe; when a red cloud surrounds the moon on both sides, this is called "chóu zéi," indicating a conflict or enemy attack; when a yellow cloud surrounds the moon, it signifies that the female ruler or one side will have someone killed, and the event will occur within thirty days; when a white cloud surrounds the moon, it indicates the ruler of that country will suffer from an attack; when a black cloud surrounds the moon, it indicates continuous rain for a period longer than the season.

The Zhongjiao Divination says: If there is black mist in the moon's circle, large or small, resembling a peach or a lychee, it indicates that a minister or subject will obscure the sovereign's discernment. Jing Fang's Book of Changes says: If there is black cloud, shaped like a flock of sheep and pigs, like flying birds, like a crowing chicken, appearing within or around the moon's circle, then within three days if the King Day does not rain, the Xiongnu will mobilize troops. Jing Fang's Book of Changes also says: If red mist covers the moon, resembling a bloody light, it presages a great drought, and within a thousand li, the people will suffer from famine. The Zhongjiao Divination says: Usually, on the night of the fourteenth day of each month, one should watch the moon. If there is a mist in the moon, shaped like a flying bird, then the region corresponding to that area will be uninhabited.

The Shangshu Jin Gui says: When the sovereign fails to understand clearly and cannot hear distinctly, the clouds will manifest five colors and block the brightness of the sun and moon. If no measures are taken to appease and save, the ministers will plot to kill the sovereign, and the passes and bridges will be impassable. The method of appeasement is to open the gates of the four directions and widely seek virtuous and benevolent men. The Chūnqiū Gǎnjīngfú says: All kinds of clouds appearing must pass by the sun and moon, which is harmful to the emperor and the sovereign; the time of the occurrence corresponds with the duration used in predicting solar eclipses. The Jingzhou Zhan says: Whenever various clouds cause changes in the sun and moon, the prediction will not be accurate within two days; heavy rain is auspicious, but heavy rain is also ominous, while light rain brings no benefit (the original text here presents two conflicting views, indicating possible errors or omissions).

When the moon is born, the teeth, claws, feet, and eleven other parts are generated.

The Yellow River Chart says: When the moon emits tooth-like light, it indicates the death of the sovereign. (The original text here is missing seven characters.) The Spring and Celestial Stars Hook says: There is a sovereign in Zhao, and there is a minister in charge of affairs; when the sun and moon emit tooth-like light, located in the Net mansion, the sovereign will be greatly deceived. The Star Divination says: This portends a son killing his father, and a minister killing his sovereign, occurring in the second lunar month, with military calamity. (The original commentary cites Eastern Han scholar Song Juan: The moon is the essence of the Wealth and Mother stars, belonging to water, which is generated by metal; the Net mansion is the essence of metal, water generating teeth, which is the image of a minister committing rebellion. The Net mansion also governs military affairs in the border regions; the Net mansion is in charge of the eighth month, and the month opposing it is the second month, so the military calamity occurs in the second month.)

The "Jingzhou Divination" states: When the moon emits a tooth-like glow, it indicates that there is a minister intent on harming the sovereign, and the sovereign is overly trusting of his attendants. The historian Xu Guang of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties, in his "Historical Records of Calendars," mentions that in the third month of the fifth year of Long'an during the reign of Emperor Jian of the Jin Dynasty, on the Jiazi day, the moon emitted a tooth-like glow, located in the Southern Dipper. The divination text says: "When the moon emits a tooth-like glow, it indicates that there is a minister intent on harming the sovereign, and the ministers will harm each other." The "Chunqiu Gan Jingfu" states: When the moon emits a tooth-like glow, it indicates that the wife and concubines will be dismissed. If the tooth-like glow extends outward downward, it indicates the decline of the sovereign's authority.

The "Kao Yi You" says: When the feudal lords plot rebellion, the moon will emit a light resembling claws. The "Jingzhou Zhuan" says: When the moon emits claw-like light, it indicates the sovereign will suffer harm; it also says that the direction indicated by the moon's claws will experience unrest and disturbances, and there will be construction projects. The "Luoshu" says: Ministers will seize control of commands, and princes will only act according to others' faces; those who intend to rebel will seek positions of high officials, and the ministers will all follow them, with the feudal lords also turning to them; at this time, the moon will lift its foot and lower its teeth. The "He Tu Mi Zheng" says: When an emperor indulges in luxury and governs unjustly, the moon will emit feet.

The Spring Annals says: When the moon gives birth to feet, it indicates the ruler has faults; when the moon gives birth to feet with芒, it means the maternal relatives dominate power, and this omen will lead to the country's downfall. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the moon gives birth to teeth, it signifies there is a minister who intends to harm the Son of Heaven, and ministers will fight each other. Xi Meng says: When the moon gives birth to claws and teeth, it indicates that rewards and punishments cannot be properly implemented, and the ruler is overly trusting of one side, leading to military conflicts; if the ruler can recruit virtuous talents and weaken the strength of powerful states, the military situation will subside. The Sea Divination says: When the moon gives birth to claws and teeth, it indicates that human affairs are biased and improper, and the ruler's attendants will suffer from bandits, with assassins appearing; the specific verification should be determined according to the left, central, and right positions of the moon's halo.

The moon gives birth to a sharp, pointed edge twelve times.

The Spring and Autumn Annals of the Movement of the Stars says: if the royal family seizes power, the moon will sprout芒刺. The Luo Writing Excerpts on芒刺 says: when the moon is full and sprouts芒刺, it indicates that the queen's faction has formed a group and will plot against their sovereign. The Spring and Autumn Annals of the Movement of the Stars also says: when the moon hangs with芒刺, it signifies national disorder and calamity falling upon the royal house; great turmoil arises, and the army will retreat in defeat. The Xia commentary says: if there is a yellow芒 on the moon, it signifies the sovereign's prosperity; another interpretation says it indicates the queen's good news. The Jingzhou Divination says: if the moon sprouts horns, it indicates warfare in the world and the country will suffer calamity. The Yellow River Chart Imperial View says: on the fourth day after the moon appears, if the moon's two horns sprout spear-like芒刺, it indicates that someone in that region will kill his sovereign and depose him; if the upper horn is larger, the sovereign will prevail; if the lower horn is larger, the minister will prevail.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon has a blemish, if it occurs on the first day of the month, it is called "Zei," indicating bandits will arise in the Central Plains. If it occurs on the second day, it is called "Yin," indicating a woman may die suddenly or suffer from a hidden illness. If it occurs on the third day, it is called "injury to the Sun from within," also known as "Tian Mang." If it occurs on the fourth day, it is called "Mingbing," also known as "Bingguang." If it occurs on the fifth day, it is called "Yin Dang," indicating there will be people spreading rumors. If it occurs on the sixth day, it is called "Nei Xu," also known as "Qu Yi," mainly indicating the abandonment of cities and towns.

At the seventh day, a thorn appears, which is called "having a peel," indicating that the power of that place is weakened. At the eighth day, a thorn appears, which is called "the land should be ceded within its proper territory, to be borne by the people," named "capturing the yang peace." At the ninth day, a thorn appears, indicating that the people in that place suffer from famine, and in order to seek food, they weaken their ancestral enterprises, and thus resort to warfare. At the tenth day, a thorn appears, indicating the beginning of the strengthening of yin energy, with women taking control of the government. At the eleventh day, a thorn appears, which is called "grief in dwelling," with the elderly and children having to live in caves. At the twelfth day, a thorn appears, indicating that someone in that place dies due to private matters.

On the thirteenth day of the month, the prick is called "Initial Strength," indicating the acquisition of land. On the fourteenth day, the prick is called "Unfavorable," indicating harm inflicted by the female ruler upon her subordinates. On the fifteenth day, the prick is called "Full Strength," indicating that the powerful side will have military conflicts. On the sixteenth day, the prick is called "Internal Weakness," indicating that a minister will kill his sovereign. On the seventeenth day, the prick is called "Authority and Law," indicating the presence of wandering troops. On the eighteenth day, the prick is called "The Sovereign Contracts an Epidemic," indicating death. On the nineteenth day, the prick is called "Declining Yang and Ascendant Yin," indicating that women will take charge of affairs.

If born on the twentieth day, it is called "localities will start construction projects." If born on the twenty-first day, it is called "people will gather from a thousand miles away, and construction projects will start in the capital." If born on the twenty-second day, it is called "the beginning of decline," indicating that many prominent people will die. If born on the twenty-third day, it is called "yin energy is strong," indicating that a woman will become a ruler. If born on the twenty-fourth day, it is called "there is a great plot within the palace." If born on the twenty-fifth day, it is called "concealment," also called "hidden calamity," indicating that calamity is hidden and will later emerge. If born on the twenty-sixth day, it is called "response," indicating that troubles often arise from internal plots. If born on the twenty-seventh day, it is called "great famine." If born on the twenty-eighth day, it is called "completion," indicating that cities will frequently change their policies. If born on the twenty-ninth day, it is called "internal disorder," also called "self-attack," indicating self-attack against oneself.

The month has either thirteen or twelve days.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon first appears, though its shape is small, its light appears broad and vast, indicating that there will be flooding in this month. The *Haizhong Divination* says: If the moon appears large but is actually small in substance, it indicates drought; if there are also abnormal colors, it suggests there will be conspiracies within the imperial harem.

The moon's division causes destruction and falling down, with a total of fourteen flows.

Jing Fang's "Yi Yao Zhan" says: When the moon breaks into three, four, five, or six pieces, it is a sign of great chaos throughout the world. The "Jingzhou Zhan" says: When the moon splits into two halves, it indicates that the country is without virtue, and the ruler will lose the world. The "He Tu Zhan" says: When the earth sinks and the moon disperses, a new ruler will surely rise. Jing Fang's "Yi Yao Zhan" says: When the moon falls from the sky, it signifies the death of a virtuous minister. Jing Fang's "Yi Yao Zhan" says: When the moon rises from the earth, it indicates that common people will become princes and dukes.

The fifteenth day of the month is when the moon is full.

The *Bi Zhong Chapter* of the *Yi Wei* says: When the moon appears in the day, it indicates that secret plots have already been carried out, and heroes within the country will flee. Jing Fang says: When the moon appears in the day, there will certainly be the downfall of a state. In *Jing Fang's Response to Disasters and Anomalies*, it says: If the moon is still bright during the day, it indicates that wicked people will rise together, seizing the wisdom and monopolizing the authority of the sovereign's court. In *Jing Fang's Response to Disasters and Anomalies*, it says: If the moon is still bright during the day—know that the moon is the minister, and the sun is the sovereign; the minister should use his own brightness to connect with the sovereign's followers. He should remain within his proper time and not compete with the sovereign for power. Instead, he should tolerate filth and ease punishments.

Now that the daylight is still so bright, this indicates that wicked people are all rising up, monopolizing wisdom and acting independently in the court of the sovereign. If no measures are taken to appease and save the situation, the moon will lose its regular path and eventually be damaged. The method of appeasement and salvation is: expel the domineering ministers, cut off the cunning and deceitful, approach the upright officials, and associate with the virtuous men. In this way, the moon will return to its normal course and will no longer shine alone. The Luo Writing says: when the moon and the great star appear together, visible even in daylight, this is also called "competing for brightness"; it signifies that the great state will weaken while the small states will grow stronger, and some people will be appointed as marquises and kings.

The moon should be full but is not full on the sixteenth day.

Shi Shen said: When the moon should be full but is not full, the sovereign will encroach upon the rights and titles of his ministers, or there will be a drought.

The moon should be new but is not new, and the waning phase does not last seventeen days.

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: If the moon reaches the new moon phase but does not align with the sun, meaning it does not share the same degree and disappears, it indicates a great mourning in the country. If the moon reaches the last quarter phase but its light has not yet faded, it indicates that the country corresponding to that lunar mansion will lose its territory.

The moon should be at the crescent phase but isn't, and when it should not be crescent, it is crescent for eighteen days.

The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When the moon becomes bright on the sixth day, it becomes a crescent moon, indicating that ministers will control government affairs and not carry out the orders of the sovereign. The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When the moon becomes bright on the seventh day, it becomes a crescent moon, indicating that the defending side will be stronger than the attacking side; if they cannot win, the general of the defending side will die. The book Zhongjiao Zhan says: When the moon has not yet reached the time to become a crescent moon but becomes one, this is called military action; when the moon reaches the time to become a crescent moon but does not, it indicates major military conflicts within the country.

Xi Meng's divination says: Before the time of the waxing moon, the moon becomes a crescent, indicating that there will be military action within the country. The Jingzhou divination says: Before the time of the waning moon, the moon becomes a crescent, indicating that ministers and officials will have many deceitful actions. The Jingzhou divination also says: When the moon reaches the eighth day and becomes a crescent, it indicates great peace throughout the world; if by the eighth day the moon has not become a crescent, it indicates that the side attacking another's city will not win. The He Tu Di Lan Xi says: If by the tenth day the moon has not become a crescent, it indicates that warfare will not be successful and the general will die; if at the proper time the moon becomes a crescent, this is called great security.

The moon should be full but is not; it should not be full but is. Nineteen times out of twenty.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the moon is full on the fourteenth day, it indicates the ruler will change his policies, and this will come to pass within a year. When the moon is full on the fifteenth day, it signifies stability and longevity, with the whole world in harmony and the people singing and dancing in joy. The *He Tu Di Lan Xi* says: When the moon becomes full before its appointed time, this is called "qu bing," which signifies a sign of hastening military action. The side that attacks another's city will become prosperous. However, if the moon is not full on its appointed day, the side that attacks another's city will suffer misfortune, and the country corresponding to the moon's position will lose territory.

The book "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the moon reaches the sixteenth day, it is full, indicating that the ruler will not flourish, and another prince or king will be established, corresponding to a period of ten years. (Original note: This refers to the moon being full without following the number of days predicted by the calendar; the other entries should be interpreted in the same way.) The book "Yi Meng Qi Shu" says: If the moon should be full but is not, it indicates the ruler is encroaching upon the ministers; if the moon should be waning but is not, it indicates the ministers are oppressing the ruler. If the ruler encroaches upon the ministers, there will be a great drought; if the ministers oppress the ruler, there will be military conflicts and floods. If the moon moves ahead greatly and becomes full, there will be troubles for the ruler; if the moon lags behind and becomes contracted, there will be calamities for the ministers.

The Xi Meng Divination states: When the moon moves quickly, arriving at the meridian before it should, and becoming full before its time, these are signs of 'urgency'. This indicates large-scale warfare, the defeat of armies, the death of generals, ministers seizing power and forcing the sovereign, a female ruler taking control, chaos throughout the land, and the change of the ancestral temples' sovereignty.

The moon should be destroyed but is not destroyed; the twenty should be missing but is not missing.

The Spring and Autumn Annals of the Han Dynasty and the Containing Nourishment says: When the wife's resentment has matured and no one can restrain her, the moon becomes full without waning, indicating that a female consort will exercise tyranny. (The original commentary cites Song Jun's explanation: 'Not waning' means not missing; 'tyranny' is like Zhao Feiyan's jealousy leading to the death of a prince.) The Jingzhou Divination says: When the moon should wane but does not, it indicates hidden matters lurking without being revealed. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the moon wanes before it should, it indicates the death of a minister, the removal of a female ruler, and the extinction of noble families of the feudal lords.

The moon should appear but does not, and when it does appear it quickly disappears again, twenty-one times.

The Jing Fang divination text says: When the moon is supposed to appear but does not, it indicates there will be plots, the death of a king, and great chaos throughout the land. The Xi Meng divination text says: After the moon begins to brighten, if it becomes visible on the seventh day, there will be military conflicts; if it becomes visible on the tenth day, there will be large-scale military conflicts; if it becomes visible between the twelfth and sixteenth days, there will be the fall of states. The Hai Zhong divination text says: When the moon appears and then disappears, it indicates great chaos throughout the land.

The moon appears again and wanes twenty-two times.

Jing Fang said: If the moon appears twice in the middle heaven within a single night, it indicates that the sovereign's destiny is exhausted. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: If before the full moon the moon wanes from the west and after the full moon it wanes from the east, this is called "reverse moon"; it signifies that ministers do not abide by the laws and regulations, and take advantage of the system to encroach upon the sovereign's authority; if no measures are taken to appease this, there will be a great flood, and military actions will arise from the direction opposite to the moon. The method to appease this is to correct punishments, eliminate wicked people, appoint virtuous officials, and thoroughly investigate difficult matters. Once the deliberation is settled and the matter is accomplished, the abnormality of the moon will return to the normal course.

The moon's path is lost and the twenty-third instance of its inclination and declination is mentioned.

Xi Meng's divination says: When the moon rises from an inappropriate position and travels along an incorrect path, it indicates that the female ruler is improper in her conduct, there are secret alliances between palace insiders and outsiders, the country with Yin characteristics has strong military power, the people in the Central Plains suffer from famine, and the lower ranks desire to exceed their authority. The "Sea Divination" says: When the moon is newly born and lies on its back with its two horns pointing upward like an inverted roof tile, it indicates that there will be a gathering of armies across the land; if there is no military action, the defending side will face misfortune. Jing Fang's "Book of Changes: Flying Divination" says: If an inverted moon appears in the first lunar month, there will certainly be good news.

The moon appears in different directions twenty-four times.

The Yellow Emperor said: When the moon first becomes bright and appears in the south, and an eclipse occurs, it indicates that grain prices will rise sharply. The Jiangzhou Divination says: When the moon first becomes bright and appears directly overhead, it indicates that those in power will scheme against those below, but this matter will not succeed.

The moon and sun appear together and appear repeatedly twenty-five times.

Jing Fang's "Yi Zhuan" says: When the ruler is weak and the woman is strong, being oppressed by the yin force, there will be a phenomenon of several moons rising together. Jing Fang says: When two moons appear together, it is called "bing ming," indicating that there will be two kings ruling together; he also says that when two moons are two inches apart, it signifies that ministers will rebel and overthrow their sovereign. The "Chun Qiu Yun Dou Shu" says: When the power of the ruler is taken by the maternal relatives, and the concubines' factions act improperly and harm the court, the moon appears full, even as if two moons appear consecutively. This is a sign of the concubine factions stirring up unrest, as if working together to shine brightly and eliminate the princes and dukes. Xi Meng says: When several moons appear together and overlap, there will be imminent military conflicts.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If three moons appear together, it indicates that a new feudal lord will be established in that region, and the female ruler will lose her position. If two moons always appear together, it signifies that the whole country will prepare for military campaigns, and ministers of different families will contend for power in the court, their strength sufficient to endanger the king. The king should select capable individuals and assign them important positions. When moons overlap, it portends harm from unusual forces, a sign of turmoil across the land, and an omen of losing the mandate of heaven.

The original commentary notes: In the first year of Emperor Cheng of Han's Jianshi era, in the eighth month on the fifth day of the Wuwu stem, at the hour of the Dragon, the water clock still had two hours left. Two moons were visible at the same time. Jing Fang's "Yi Transmission" says: When the ruler is weak and women are strong, they are oppressed by yin energy, and thus two moons will appear simultaneously. Later, Zhao Feiyan became empress, and her two sisters monopolized the emperor's favor, killed the prince, and Emperor Cheng could not stop them. Eventually, they were all executed, which was the fulfillment of the celestial phenomenon on that day.

According to the late Grand Astronomer Li Chunfeng, in the ninth year of the Great Peace era of the Sui Dynasty, on the 27th day of the first lunar month, at dawn, the emperor rose to look towards the east and saw two moons appearing, about two feet apart, located between the Winnowing Basket mansion and the Dipper mansion. Everyone present saw this. Soon after, Yang Xuan Gan (the original text says 'Yang Xuan Sheng') rebelled in Liyang, and Zhu Xie, Guan Chong (the original text says 'Zhu Bian, Guan Zongyi') and others devastated the Jiangnan region. From then on, the country was plagued by continuous warfare and banditry, until the fall of the Sui dynasty. This is a particularly clear fulfillment of the prophecy.

The "Sea Divination" says: Between the waxing and waning phases of the moon, when the moonlight is bright and the moon appears numerous, either two or three, or four or five, or even as many as ten moons appearing together, this portends the fragmentation of the realm, the loss of power by the Son of Heaven, and the transfer of authority to self-proclaimed feudal lords. (Original commentary: The various phenomena associated with the moon's surroundings are generally similar to the rules for divining days.) The "Spring Hidden Deep Pool" says: When ten moons appear together, the calamity does not necessarily come from outside, but rather from the emergence of strong and cunning individuals. (Original commentary citing Song Jun: The moon symbolizes ministers; when such a lunar phenomenon occurs, ministers will certainly have conflicts, all acting wickedly and pretending to be ill to stay away.)

The "Xi Meng Divination" says: In the east, a small moon supporting a large moon indicates that a small state will be destroyed; a large moon supporting a small moon indicates that a great state will attack and take control, with the guest army in the west. A small moon supporting a large moon indicates that a small town will win; a large moon supporting a small moon indicates that a large city will win. The "Chunqiu Yun Doushu" says: A small moon supporting a large moon indicates that a group of villains will occupy the palace, and at this time, the ruler is like a jade pendant hanging on a crown, merely holding the position. (Original note cites Song Jun's explanation: This is a metaphor for the ruler being controlled by others and holding a subordinate position.) A large moon supporting a small moon indicates that a close minister will rise to power, and those who spread false words will be rampant, the attendants will control the orders, and the Three Dukes can only act according to others' faces. (The original text says "wang feng" but should be "wang feng".) (Original note cites Song Jun's explanation: The so-called "wang feng" means that when the attendants appear, the Three Dukes will rush to flatter them.)

Moon Divination Two

The moon is crowned and adorned with one jewel.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When a crescent moon has a ear-like shape called 'Er' beside it, and there is also an arc-shaped cloud covering the moon, forming a 'Guan', this indicates that the emperor will have great joy or there will be a strong wind. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the crescent moon has 'Er', and also has 'Dai', which is a short cloud lying flat above the moon's surface, there will be good news within a hundred days. The Emperor's Enjoyment says: When the crescent moon has 'Er', it should be expected within sixty days, and there will be military actions. Jing Fang's Book of Changes says: When the crescent moon has 'Er', it should be expected within thirty days, and there will be military actions.

The "Imperial Inspection of Delight" says: If the moon does not produce a halo but only produces "er", it indicates that the sovereign will have good news; if the army is fighting abroad, it is also a sign of good news. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: If the moon produces "er" at dusk, it indicates that military affairs have begun; if the moon produces "er" after midnight, it indicates that people in the border regions are anxious. The "Spring and Autumn Movement of the Stars and Orbs" says: If the sovereign excludes cunning marquises and employs and honors capable people to assist himself, the moon will produce one "er" on each side.

The "Heavenly Map of the Emperor's Delight and Joy" from the "Wěi Shū" says that the crescent-shaped light appearing on both sides of the moon is called "ěr", and if the "ěr" appears in a blue color, it indicates calamity; if red, it indicates the outbreak of warfare; if yellow, it indicates joy; if black, it indicates the loss of territory; and the fulfillment of these omens does not exceed three years. The "Gāozōng Zhàn" says that if two "ěr" appear simultaneously on the moon, there will be rain within ten days; if three "ěr" appear, the country will have good news; if four "ěr" appear, the monarch's principal wife will die; another interpretation says that the monarch will appoint another feudal lord. The "Jīngzhōu Zhàn" says that when the moon produces "ěr", it indicates a great flood; it also says that if four "tí" appear on the moon, the Son of Heaven will have no spouse, or there will be mourning in the state; if six "tí" appear, the Son of Heaven will tour the land. (Original book note: "tí" is another name for "ěr.") The "Jīngzhōu Zhàn" also says that if the moon produces "ěr" and there is also a rising aura above it, there will be great joy within a hundred days.
