Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The Shi school says: Five ministers are five stars located north of the Well mansion, near the Northern River. The original commentary notes that the westernmost of the five ministers is two degrees within the Well mansion, fifty-seven degrees from the northern celestial pole, and one and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's divination says: The five ministers govern the will of the heavenly sovereign; the first is called the Imperial Teacher, the second the Imperial Friend, the third the Three Princes, the fourth the Doctor, and the fifth the Grand Historian; these five categories of officials are responsible for resolving difficult matters on behalf of the heavenly sovereign. Wu Xian says: The five ministers belong to the class of officials.

The Shi school says: The five feudal lords are represented by five stars located south of the northern Xu, arranged in a line from east to west; the first star to the east corresponds to the state of Qi, and the first star to the west corresponds to the state of Qin, while the other stars correspond to the other feudal states. The "Chunqiu Wei Yuanmingbao" says: The five feudal lords are in charge of exposing and prosecuting wrongdoing, and guarding against unexpected events. The "Yuan Shenqi" says: The five feudal lords are in charge of supporting and rescuing those in peril, which are the duties that feudal lords should fulfill. The Shi school says: What is meant by the feudal lords who assist the sovereign is to enable them to expose plots of wickedness and investigate hidden and concealed matters.

The Spring and Autumn Waijing says: The duties of the five feudal princes are to regulate yin and yang, to expose external calamities, to examine the gains and losses of government affairs, and to serve as envoys beyond the nine provinces. When the five planets undergo anomalies or retrograde motion, it is called 'penalty'. The first planet should correspond to the disorder of the current year, and the other planets should be interpreted according to their respective positions. These anomalies correspond to heavenly phenomena, while calamities arise from within the court. The Li Wei Han Wenjia says: When the five types of rites—auspicious, ominous, military, guest, and joyful—are properly established, the five feudal princes' stars will move in correct positions and shine brightly, without conflicting with each other. The five grains and the five directions' lands will all experience great harvests.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The five feudal lords' stars are good when they are evenly sized and all bright, which brings good fortune to the king, prosperity throughout the land, and loyalty from the ministers. If the stars are uneven, disorderly, and dim, the ministers will be disloyal, the king will not be at peace, and the country will face troubles. The Spring Annals: Yuanming Bao says: If the five feudal lords' stars sprout芒角, chaos will occur within the court. The Spring Annals: Yuanming Bao also says: If the five feudal lords' stars scatter in all directions, the vassals who govern the outer territories will suffer damage, the Son of Heaven will be forced to leave his palace, and the ministers will flee in disorder.

The Shi school says: if the five feudal lords' stars are bright and large, with smooth and clean colors, and uniform in size, it is auspicious; the feudal lords are loyal and virtuous, and the way of the king is greatly flourishing; if the stars are small and faint, it is ominous. Xi Meng says: the five feudal lords' stars should be bright; brightness means the world is well governed, stable and prosperous; if they are not bright, or even disappear, there will be someone among the high officials who plots against the sovereign, and it will happen within three years. Han Yang says: the five feudal lords' stars are in charge of supervision and warning; once their celestial appearance is abnormal, one will see chaos and mutual slaughter. The "Shi School Commentary" says: the five feudal lords' stars are in charge of deliberating on difficult matters.

The star of accumulated water is used for divination, and there are forty-one interpretations.

The Shi school says: The star called 'Accumulated Water' is a single star located to the north of the star in the western part of the Northern River. The original commentary notes: 'Accumulated Water' enters the Well mansion by thirteen degrees, is fifty-five degrees away from the northern celestial pole, and is within the Yellow Path by twelve degrees and a half. The Shi school also says: The star 'Accumulated Water' is also called 'Gathered Water'; its function is to store good spring water, providing it for the official in charge of brewing wine, the flag star of the wine official. Wu Xian says: This is the official star responsible for managing water storage.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star of Accumulated Water supplies water for the Wine Flag star. The accumulated water is sweet spring water, prepared for brewing liquor to entertain guests. This star is good when it is bright; brightness signifies peace throughout the land and the proper observance of feasts and ceremonies for the elderly. If the star's light is dim, the ruler will not be at ease, there will be a poor harvest of grain, feasts will be abandoned, heavy labor will be imposed, and the people will suffer. The Shi school says: When the star of Accumulated Water is bright and large but unstable, the rivers, lakes, and seas across the land will overflow, and ferry crossings and roads will be blocked. The Shi school's praise says: The star of Accumulated Water is responsible for supplying water for the Wine Flag star.

The star of accumulated firewood is used for divination and involves forty-two sections.

The Shi school says: The star of accumulated firewood is a single star located in the southeast of the accumulated water. The original commentary says: The star of accumulated firewood enters the Well mansion by twenty-one and a half degrees, is located sixty-one and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and is within ten degrees and a half of the Yellow Path. The Shi school says: The star of accumulated firewood refers to a pile of firewood; gathering firewood is for the purpose of worship. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: Accumulated firewood is used to supply the kitchen, to burn for cooking food. This star is good when it is bright; if it is bright, the king will be secure and the five grains will mature. If the star's light is dim, the kitchen will be empty, there will be drought across the land, a poor harvest, and the people will suffer from hunger, causing the king to worry.

The Shi school says: When the stars of Accumulated Fire and Accumulated Water are within five feet of each other, the world will be peaceful and the five grains will be abundant; but if they are more than ten feet apart, the country will suffer from famine, and the people will be displaced, leaving their homes and villages. The Shi school also says: When the star of Accumulated Fire is bright and large, the ruler should increase the food supply. The Shi school further says: When the star of Accumulated Fire is bright and large, the great rituals such as the禘祭 and the尝祭 can be conducted with purity and clarity; but if the star's light is dim, the ruler and ministers will not be harmonious, and all the sacrifices will not be accepted by the spirits. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The single star of Accumulated Fire oversees the provision of food in the kitchen.

The star of water level is associated with the number forty-three.

The Shi school says: The four stars of the Water position are located east of the Well mansion, arranged in a line running north-south. The original commentary notes: The southernmost of the Water position stars enters the Well mansion by nineteen and a half degrees, is seventy-two and a half degrees from the northern celestial pole, and lies three and a half degrees outside the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Water position stars govern officials in charge of water; if these stars are small and dim, as in the past, then yin and yang are in harmony, rain falls on time, and the world is peaceful; if the stars are bright and large, there will be great floods, overflowing ditches, drowned crops, and people starving from water disasters.

The Shi school says: The water position stars oversee the duties of water balance; the balance rod is level and steady, just like the surface of water. Lakes and marshes fill up evenly before they flow out, thus preventing water from being blocked. When these stars are bright and large, both military calamities and water disasters will arise together. Jiao Yanshou says: The water position stars approaching the northern Xu constellation indicate that land will sink and become rivers, or there will be great floods. The specific country affected should be determined by the heavenly stem and earthly branch of the day the disaster occurs. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The four water position stars oversee the discharge and overflowing flow of water.

The Star of the Yellow Emperor (Xuanyan) is used for divination and consists of forty-four sections.

The Shi school says: The Xuanyuan constellation consists of seventeen stars, located north of the Seven Star mansion. The original book's marginal note says: The main star of Xuanyuan enters the Extended Net mansion by more than half a degree, is located seventy-one degrees away from the north celestial pole, and is within the Yellow Path by less than half a degree. The "Poetry of Prophecy and Calamity" says: The yellow dragon resides in the inner position, symbolizing the proper role of the earthly virtue. The first name of Xuanyuan is "Chenling," and the second name is "Quanxing," which governs the deity of thunder and rain.

The Shi school says: Huangxuan is also called "Hun Chang Gong," shaped like a dragon or snake winding along; it consists of seventeen stars. The brightest star at the southern end represents the empress, who is the mother queen. Six feet north of the empress is a star representing the consort, also known as the screen star, which holds the position of general. Another six feet north of that is a star representing the secondary consort, also called the妃, who holds the position of deputy general. Another six feet north of that is a star representing the secondary妃. All the stars after that belong to the secondary妃. Three feet south of the empress is a dim star representing the female attendant. A star located about one zhang to the southwest of the female attendant, which is brighter, represents the maternal relatives of the empress. A star located about one zhang to the southeast of the female attendant, which is dimmer, represents the maternal relatives of the empress.

Xi Meng said: Xuanyan is the court hall where a female ruler governs, also called "Tian Zhu." The "Jingzhou Divination" states: The bright star in front of Xuanyan is called "Tian Guan," which oversees matters concerning the gate of the female chamber. The "Huainanzi Honglie" says: Xuanyan is the dwelling place for the emperor's concubines. Wu Xian said: Xuanyan is the palace of the emperor's consorts, overseeing the duties of the earth officials.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The seventeen stars of Huangxuan oversee matters concerning the imperial concubines. Their form resembles a yellow dragon, corresponding to the sovereign. The first star at the southern end represents the empress; the star north of that is the three great concubines; the star north of that is the nine嫔; the star north of that is the twenty-seven secondary concubines; the star north of that is the eighty-one palace women. A star six chi to the southwest represents the maternal relatives of the empress; a star six chi to the east represents the maternal relatives of the empress. A smaller star one chi south of the concubine stars represents the prince; a star two chi south of that represents the female historian. These stars oversee thunder, rain, wind, frost, mist, dew, as well as the rainbow, the back qi, the jian qi, the bao qi, and the er qi of the sun. All these are variations of qi manifested by Huangxuan, and all serve as omens of good or bad fortune for the sovereign.

The Shi school says: The star cluster of Huan Yuan is the dwelling place of the queen and numerous concubines, also called "the Southern Palace of the Emperor," belonging to the central earth deity, symbolizing the female ruler; the position where the female ruler resides is also the dwelling place of the Yellow Emperor. The "Rites of the Writings of Hanyan" says: When the maternal relatives and maternal uncles behave in accordance with propriety, the horns of Huan Yuan stretch out widely. The "Book of Filial Piety (Missing Part of Qie)" says: When the stars of Huan Yuan shine brightly together, the concubines compete for reputation. The Shi school says: When the stars of Huan Yuan's screen move away from their position, the relationship between the ruler and minister loses proper distinctions and moral principles.

The Shi school said: The stars of Huangxuan appear as before, yellow in color and moist, indicating peace throughout the land and abundant harvests. The Shi school also said: If the stars of Huangxuan move outward, the people will be scattered and flee, seeking refuge with the Hu people; if they move inward, the people will suffer from great famine, and the Hu people will invade. Jiao Yanshou said: If the stars of Huangxuan fluctuate or approach each other, it indicates calamity within the family of the empress and the queen, or incidents of those of lower status offending those of higher status or rebellions occurring.

Another divination passage says: If the female official star is far away from the queen's star, but there are lowly small stars approaching it, there will be matters of rewards; if this pattern extends to the east and west to the great people and small people stars, it indicates the king marries without following the proper order, indulges in debauchery and disorder, and elevates a person of low birth to be the principal wife. Xi Meng says: The angle of the Yellow Emperor's star vibrates, which signifies the decline of the maternal family; the term 'vibrate' refers to shaking. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: The stars of the Yellow Emperor are better when they are small; the best is when they are small and yellow and bright. If they shrink until they disappear, the empress dowager will not be at peace; if their color turns black, it is a great calamity. The Shi school says: When the stars of the Yellow Emperor gather together, it signifies that 120 concubines are arranged in order of rank, and the imperial harem will have many sons and grandsons; if the starlight is dim, there will be sudden troubles. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The Yellow Emperor's star resembles a dragon's body and governs matters concerning the imperial concubines.

The constellation Shao Wei (Little Dipper) is used for divination and contains forty-five stars.

The Shi school said: The four stars of Shao Wei are located to the west of Tai Wei enclosure, arranged in a line from north to south. The original commentary notes: The southernmost star of Shao Wei enters the Zhang Xu mansion by ten and a half degrees, is seventy and a half degrees away from the northern celestial pole, and is three and a half degrees less than within the Yellow Path. Han Yang said: According to the records in the Tian Guan star chart, the four stars of Shao Wei, the first represents a recluse, the second represents a doctor of classics, the third represents a righteous person, and the fourth represents a minister.

The original commentary notes that other texts mention Xiao Wei as five stars, with the southernmost star indicating a true person, such as Laozi or Xu You; the second star indicating a recluse, such as Confucius; the third star indicating a skilled artisan, such as Xi Zhong and Lu Ban; the fourth star indicating a practitioner of esoteric arts, such as Shi Kuang who standardized the bell tones; and the fifth star indicating a strong man capable of lifting nine thousand jin. Additionally, the Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Celestial Officials, states that to the west of Tai Wei's court and enclosures there is a star called 'Duo' consisting of five stars. Checking the star catalogues, there are only four stars there. Adding Han Yang's account introduces another variant, so here several accounts are collected together.

The Wenyao Gou says: Shao Wei is the rank of officials, also called "chushì" (retired scholars). Wu Xian says: the star of chushì belongs to the water official. The Shi school says: Shao Wei is the court of Fuxi. Wu Xian says: Shao Wei is the deputy ruler of the Son of Heaven; some say it is the office of the Doctor; another says it is in charge of guarding the inner gate of the palace. The Huangdi Zhan says: Shao Wei oversees those with skills and talents; people like Confucius who are knowledgeable and those like Lu Ban who are skillful in mind, as well as various masters of esoteric arts, all fall under its jurisdiction.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the stars of Shao Wei are bright and arranged in order, the ruler will appoint virtuous men and employ talented persons who have retired from official life, and the world will be at peace; but when the starlight is dim and weak, even to the point of being invisible, virtuous men will not take office, sages will hide themselves, and the ruler will not be at ease. The Spring Annals'纬 says: When a minister monopolizes power, there will be warfare and conflict, and the earth will crack open; at this time, the star of Shao Wei will be faint and obscured.

The Shi school says: When the stars of Shao Wei are bright, large, and yellow with a lustrous appearance, virtuous men are recommended and loyal ministers are appointed. The Shi school also says: When the stars of Shao Wei are small, faint, and weak, virtuous men retreat and loyal ministers are discarded. Wu Xian says: When the stars of Shao Wei deviate from their normal state, there will be worries for the female ruler. Wu Xian also says: When the star of Chu Shi is bright, the king's policies will be implemented, and ministers who assist will appear at the right time. Jiao Yanshou says: When the star of Shao Wei approaches the Tai Wei垣, if one of the stars moves alone and enters the western gate of Tai Wei, the ruler of the Hu people will have schemes, and bandits will run rampant requiring suppression. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The four stars of Shao Wei are the positions of recluses.

The Star of Taiwei Divination Covers Forty-six Items

The Shi school says: Taiwei consists of ten stars. The original commentary notes that both Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials Chapter and Ban Gu's Book of Han: Astronomical Records include the star "Kuang Star" but do not provide detailed divinatory meanings for it. Taiwei is located north of Yi Xu and Chen Xu. The star on the right side of the gate is located nine degrees into Yi Xu, seventy-six and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and two and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. Wu Gong's Celestial Officials Star Divination says: Taiwei is the celestial passageway; the southern gate, as a pass, opens and closes, affecting events thousands of miles away. The gate is divided into Left Gate and Right Gate on both sides.

Xi Meng said: The Taimei Palace is the court of the Son of Heaven, the place where the Supreme Deity administers government, and also the seat of the Five Heavens Emperors. The marginal note in the original text says: According to Zhang Heng's "Ling Xian," Taimei is the courtyard of the Five Emperors. Taimei is also called "Baoshe," which is the official residence of the twelve feudal lords; its outer enclosure symbolizes the Nine Ministers. The Xuanyan is like the weight of a scale, and Taimei is like the rod of the scale.

The original commentary says: According to the "Continued History of Jin Yang Autumn," when Huan Wen entered Sichuan, he heard of a man skilled in star divination. At that time, Huan Wen had ambitious and rebellious intentions, so he summoned this man. One night, he held his hand and asked under the starlight about the length and destiny of the state and its people. The star diviner said: The stars of Taimei, Ziwēi, and Wenchang palaces show no signs of worry, so there is nothing to be concerned about. Matters beyond fifty years do not need to be discussed. Huan Wen was not pleased and gave him a piece of silk and five thousand coins. The star diviner went to see Xi Zaochi and said: I have received an order to commit suicide, but I only ask to be marked with the name of my coffin. Xi Zaochi asked him why he thought so. The star diviner said: Giving me silk is to tell me to hang myself; giving me money is to let me buy a coffin, so I know. Xi Zaochi said: You almost died in vain. Don't you know that the star mansions have the principle of not covering everything? That piece of silk was just a joke, and the money was for your travel expenses, meaning to let you go. The star diviner was very happy and told Huan Wen this. Huan Wen said: You have read thirty years of Confucian books, but you would not have known this if you had not gone to Xi Zaochi.

The Huainanzi Honglie says: Taiwei oversees the affairs of the Southern Zhu Niao. The original commentary cites Xu Shen's statement: the direction from which the great wind originates is exactly where the Zhu Niao resides. The Xiaojing Jingwei says: Taiwei is the heavenly court, where the heavenly emperor records documents and issues prophecies; the five stars are arranged together, and numerous deities gather for deliberation, so positions of generals and ministers are established, as well as assistants, enforcers, attendants, and the stars of Shaowei, to discuss and decide on difficult matters. Wu Xian says: Taiwei is the constant attendant of the Son of Heaven, belonging to the earth officials.

The Huangdi Divination Manual says: Taimei is the palace of the Son of Heaven. On the western side, there are four stars arranged in a north-south direction. At the southern end, the first star is the Upper General; to the north of it is an empty space, which is the Sun's West Gate; north of that star is another star, the Second General; north of that is an empty space, which is the Central Kingdom's West Gate; north of that star is another star, the Second Minister; north of that is an empty space, which is the Too Yin's West Gate; north of that star is another star, the Second Minister; north of that is an empty space, which is the Central Kingdom's East Gate; north of that star is another star, the Second General; north of that is an empty space, which is the Too Yin's East Gate; at the northernmost end is the Upper Minister (this section's names of gates and positions of stars are mixed up in the original text, but are recorded as they appear). On the eastern side, there are also four stars arranged in a north-south direction. At the southern end, the first star is the Upper Minister; north of that is an empty space, which is the Sun's East Gate; at the northernmost end is the Upper General. On the southern side, there are two stars arranged in an east-west direction. The western star is the Right Law Officer, and the eastern star is the Left Law Officer, symbolizing the Chancellor of Justice and the Secretary of State; between the two Law Officers is the main gate of Taimei Heaven Palace; west of the Right Law Officer is an empty space, which is the Right Yard Gate; east of the Left Law Officer is an empty space, which is the Left Yard Gate. The Heavenly Emperor has four generals and ministers, totaling ten officials; the Heavenly Emperor most highly respects the Upper General and the Upper Minister, not including the Chancellor of Justice and the Secretary of State in this rank.

The Luo Writing says: The western wing of Taiwei is the position of the general, who holds authority and enforces punishment, executing those who rebel; the eastern wing is the position of the prime minister, who upholds virtue, and resists arrogant princes and dukes. The Spring and Autumn Yuan Meng Bao says: Taiwei is the place where authority and decrees reside. It also says: Taiwei is the court of Heaven, where laws and regulations are established, justice is administered, officials are evaluated and promoted, and positions are granted based on virtue. The constellations receive mandates here, and the myriad spirits determine the measures and standards here, presenting their affairs and investigating doubts. The two stars in the southern wing: the one on the east is called Left Law Officer, symbolizing the Chancellor of Justice; the one on the west is called Right Law Officer, symbolizing the Grand Censor. The officials of law are used to report and prosecute evil and wicked people. Between the two stars is the southern gate; to the east of Left Law Officer is Left Wing Gate, and to the west of Right Law Officer is Right Wing Gate. The four stars in the eastern wing: starting from the south, the first one is called Upper Minister, and to the north of Upper Minister is East Gate; the second one is called Second Minister, and to the north of Second Minister is China Gate; the third one is called Second General, and to the north of Second General is Taiyin Gate; the fourth one is called Upper General; this is referred to as the 'Four Assistants'.

The four stars in the western sector are called: starting from the south, the first is called Shangjiang, with Ximen to the north of Shangjiang; the second is Cijiang, with Zhonghuamen to the north of Cijiang; the third is Cixiang, with Taiyinmen to the north of Cixiang; the fourth is Shangxiang; these four stars are also known as "Sifu." The "Chunqiu Wei" says: the celestial court of Heaven, Taimei, arranges the Five Phases, oversees the Three Dynasties, establishes definite laws, and completes the regulations and standards. The attendant stars are the ministers who guard and support, with the stars in the west being the positions of generals, the stars in the east being the positions of ministers, the middle being the stars of law enforcement, and the two stars to the south forming the end gate. On both sides of the end gate are the left and right yemen, and there are five kings of the Five Peers located among them.

The Shi school's asterisms

The Star of Ranks divination covers fifty-three sections.

The Shi school says: The Three Platforms consist of six stars, arranged in pairs; they start from the Star of Examinations and Documents and extend all the way to the Taiwei Enclosure. The original commentary notes: the star located slightly to the north among the two platforms is thirty degrees and a half within the Well Mansion, thirty degrees and a half south of the northern celestial pole, and twenty-eight degrees and a half within the Yellow Path. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the Three Platforms (as cited in the original commentary by Su's school: 'Neng' is read as 'Tai') are the positions of the Three Ministers; they also symbolize the feudal lords and farmers; it is also called 'Heavenly Pillar,' the passage through which the Taiyi moves, and the courtyard of the Star of Examinations and Documents; in the lower world, it is called 'Heavenly Qi.'

The Huangdi Zhan says: Among the three abilities, the pair closest to the Wen Chang star is called Tai Wei, also known as the Director of Destiny, and holds the highest position; the next pair is called Si Tu, also known as Si Zhong, and holds the middle position; and the third pair is called Si Kong, also known as Si Lu, and holds the lowest position. The Huangdi Zhan also says: Tai Jie is the three-tiered steps of heaven; the upper star of the upper step represents the Son of Heaven, and the lower star represents the female ruler; the upper star of the middle step represents the feudal lords and the Three Dukes, and the lower star represents the ministers and officials; the upper star of the lower step represents the commoners, and the lower star represents the ordinary people; the establishment of these three steps is to harmonize yin and yang and govern all things.

Another divination passage says: The large interval between the three star groups is normally sixteen degrees, and if it exceeds this, it is considered excessive and leads to reduction and loss. The small interval between each pair of stars is normally half a degree, and if it exceeds this, it is considered excessive and leads to reduction and loss; if it is less, it indicates closeness. Another divination passage says: Those who understand the principles of the three capable stars can prevent people from suffering from epidemic diseases; however, if a couple both look up to the three capable stars simultaneously, it may lead to separation. Although the three capable stars are esteemed, they ultimately represent the rank of a minister. Another divination passage says: The star of official salary governs the titles and salaries bestowed by the sovereign.

The "Liji Wei Hanwenjia" says: SanTai are the steps of heaven, and the Taiyi deity steps on them to go up and down; hence they are also called "Tianjie." The "Chunqiu Wei" says: SanNeng are arranged in front, for people to examine and verify, to correct the framework and order. The "Chunqiu Wei Yuanmingbao" says: the six stars below the Big Dipper's handle are arranged in pairs facing north, called SanNeng, which oversee virtue and can hear virtuous words and proclaim omens; the two stars close to WenChang to the west are called ShangTai, which is also known as SiMing, overseeing longevity; the next two are ZhongTai, which is also known as SiZhong, overseeing the royal family; and the two stars to the east are XiaTai, which is also known as SiLu, overseeing military affairs.

The "Discourse on Omens" says: The upper star of the upper platform governs Yanzhou and Yuzhou, while the lower star governs Jingzhou and Yangzhou; the upper star of the middle platform governs Liangzhou and Yongzhou, while the lower star governs Jizhou; the upper star of the lower platform governs Qingzhou, while the lower star governs Xuzhou; if any star deviates from its normal state, it is used to predict the fate of the corresponding state. Wu Xian says: The three abilities are the six steps of the Son of Heaven; these six steps belong to the officials of the earth. Xi Meng says: The three abilities govern titles of nobility and also serve as the duties of the Heavenly Granary. Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian: Book of Celestial Officials" says: The three abilities and the three balances are both the court of Heaven.

The *Jingzhou Divination* states: The Director of Destiny oversees military affairs; when the two stars are separated by six feet, there will be warfare. Another divination passage says: The three stars of the Director of Destiny, the Director of the Court, and the Director of Wages are the offices by which the Son of Heaven determines safety and danger, and they are also the rulers of the lifespan of all people. The *Yellow Emperor Divination* says: When the three stars of the Director of Destiny, the Director of the Court, and the Director of Wages appear in a dark blue color, there will be many troubles throughout the land. Another divination passage says: The Director of the Court oversees the royal family; when the two stars are separated by six feet, there will be chaos and urgency in the government, close relatives become distant, the royal family is not harmonious and does not unite, the ruler cannot rest in peace, and warfare arises.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If a marquis or duke rebels, leading his followers to raise an army, the upper star of the middle rank turns red; if the夷狄 invade the borders, causing unrest within the territory, the lower star of the middle rank becomes distant and slanting, turning white; if the ministers and officials abandon the right path and turn to wrong ways, acting in self-interest, the lower star becomes low and distant, turning red; if one avoids the superior and attaches to the inferior, gathering a faction to stand equal with the superior, the star approaches and sinks, turning white. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: If the common people and the lower class disobey the laws, committing crimes and theft, the upper star of the lower rank turns red; if the stars leave their proper positions and move toward the lower positions, extravagant and licentious customs arise, and the gatekeepers act with impunity, the stars turn white; if the orders are implemented and the laws prevail, with everyone obeying, the stars approach and sink, turning white.

Another divination says: If the upper platform is incomplete, plowing cannot be done in spring; if the middle platform is incomplete, weeding and cultivating cannot be done in summer; if the lower platform is incomplete, harvesting cannot be done in autumn. Another divination says: If the three platforms are level, yin and yang are in harmony, winds and rains come at the proper time, the five grains are abundant, auspicious signs appear, and the world is peaceful; if the three platforms are uneven, yin and yang are out of balance, winds and rains are untimely, the gods do not accept worship, calamities occur together, and the people suffer unrest.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If the sovereign is harsh and fierce, fond of warfare, deposes the empress and kills his sons, the upper star of the upper rank will turn red; if he expands the palace grounds along the walls and indulges in pleasures and desires, the upper rank will be overly wide and slanting; if he is timid and weak, and does not carry out punishments or executions when they are due, the upper rank will be close and tight, turning white; if there are factions in court, mutual connections, and the laws and regulations are arbitrarily violated and changed, the lower star of the upper rank will turn white; if the concubines are highly honored and favored, and slanderous words are used to gain influence, the lower star of the upper rank will be overly wide and slanting, turning white; if one indulges in desires and harbors evil intentions to plot rebellion, the star will rise high and look upward, turning red.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the ruler maintains the overall framework, the ministers abide by laws and regulations, taxes and levies are pursued with frugality, and punishments are applied leniently, the upper class will closely align with this. When the feudal lords present tribute on time, their court visits and diplomatic inquiries conform to propriety, the Three Dukes exert their utmost loyalty, and the ministers and officials act without personal bias, the middle class will closely align with this. When the common people follow education and moral guidance, family harmony is maintained, provisions are distributed on time, and labor services are arranged in order, the lower class will closely align with this. The terms "compare" and "closeness" both refer to mutual proximity.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If a ruler excessively enlists laborers, indulges in pleasures, builds high towers and palaces, and repeatedly encroaches upon farming seasons, the upper steps will widen accordingly. If the feudal lords are powerful, their chariots and attire exceed their rank, the Three Dukes monopolize power, the ministers and officials are greedy and deceitful, then the middle steps will become distant and spread apart. The original commentary notes: According to Wang Yin's Records of the Jin Dynasty, Zhang Hua's younger son Zhang Jian was skilled in observing celestial phenomena. He said that the star Zhongtai had split, which was alarming, so he advised Zhang Hua to resign and step down. Zhang Hua replied that at present, only cultivating virtue could be the way to deal with it. Tan Daoluan's Jinyang Spring records: After Zhang Hua's death, Zhongtai indeed split. In the Ta Yuan period, the Yin energy returned to its proper place, and the principles were re-established, and the people in the Central Plains believed this was due to the accumulated virtue of Xie Taifu's ancestors. The Book of the Song Dynasty's Records of Celestial Phenomena says: In the first year of Yongkang of Emperor Hui of the Jin Dynasty, in March, the star Zhongtai split. On that day, the Dowager Jia killed the crown prince. Soon after, the Duke of Zhao, Sima Lun, deposed and killed the Dowager Jia. Later, Zhang Hua was also deposed, and Sima Lun proclaimed himself emperor. Thus, the Three Princes rose up together, seizing control of the court. As for scholars and commoners abandoning the fundamentals for superficial pursuits, refusing to engage in farming and sericulture, indulging in extravagance and competing in luxury, bullying each other, and striving to engage in cunning schemes, the lower steps will widen and become extravagant. The terms 'sparse' and 'wide' refer to the steps moving apart from each other.

The Luo Writing says: The three abilities are horizontal and diagonal, connecting through, causing the world to be silent and quiet, like crickets in winter. After twelve years, there will be a great mountain collapsing, which is a sign that the ruler will perish. The Shang Zhong Shou says: The central platform is low, and the three ministers are secretly planning. The Shang Zhong Shou also says: If the three abilities in the sky change, disaster will occur, with land sinking, mountains collapsing, water overflowing in valleys, and rivers drying up.

The Li Wei Han Wen Jia says: When the sovereign masters the rites and regulations, without wasting resources or harming the people, and when the sovereign and ministers are in harmony, and all creatures are nurtured according to the proper natural order, then SanTai will shine evenly, neither too wide nor too narrow, conforming to the usual standard. The commentary from the original text cites Song Jun's note, saying: The system of ranks for ministers and the number of palaces, chariots, and banners each have their respective levels and ranks; if they conform to these ranks, they will correspond accordingly. The Li Wei Han Wen Jia also says: The rites of mourning and burial are carried out according to their proper seasons, and the changes in systems and the adjustments in rites are handled appropriately, then SanTai will be level, and there will be a virtue star appearing and disappearing between them.

The Spring and Autumn Writings say: If the three high officials act arbitrarily and improperly, and appoint unqualified people, mountains will collapse, and the Star of Ranks will shift position, like a tripod breaking its legs. The Spring and Autumn Writings also say: When the three abilities stars have harmonious colors, the sovereign and ministers will be in harmony; if the colors are not harmonious, the sovereign and ministers will be greatly discordant. The Spring and Autumn Writings further say: When the three abilities stars have disordered colors, the Son of Heaven will not be wise. The Gan school says: When the Star of Ranks is bright and arranged in order, with proper hierarchy, the sovereign and ministers will be in harmony, and a prosperous era will arrive.

The Gan school says: When the Three Ranks stars are yellow, the world is discussing virtue and governance; when they are red, the world is discussing military affairs; when they are black, there is worry and hardship; when they are white, there are funerals; white also indicates plague and disease; if the Three Ranks stars are not aligned straight, the world loses its direction and strategy. The Gan school also says: If the Three Abilities stars move and clash with each other, the feudal lords will rebel, the Son of Heaven cannot appear, and even the ruler may fall; determine which state it affects based on the stem and branch of the day it occurs. The Gan school also says: If the Star of the Official splits and shakes or merges, there will be a great amnesty. Jiao Yanshou says: If the Three Abilities stars move, they all indicate secret plots by people.

Xi Meng said: If the upper star of San Neng is scattered, calamity will arise from the upper class; if the middle star is scattered, calamity will arise from the middle class; if the lower star is scattered, calamity will arise from the lower class. The term calamity refers to rebellious acts. Another divination says: The stars of Director of Destiny, Director of the Middle, and Director of Wealth should appear red-yellow, which brings the people to be vigorous and strong, and their endeavors will often be successful. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: If San Neng is both scattered and dense, the ancestral temple sacrifices will be punished, due to the loss of filial piety, brotherly love, benevolence, and righteousness; if the five government offices are not smooth, it is the fault of the three ministers.

Another divination passage says: The three abilities are not equal in size, and the three ministers do not trust each other. Another passage says: The three abilities have uneven colors, indicating that the ruler and ministers will contend and become separated; if the stars turn black, it signifies calamity. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: If one of the three abilities is out of position, the world will be in peril; if two are out of position, the world will be in great disorder; if all three are out of position, the world will be ungovernable. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: If the three abilities have a yellow color that is moist and lustrous, there will be a great amnesty. Another passage says: If the three abilities have a yellow color that is moist, lustrous, and radiant, the people will be peaceful and long-lived. Another passage says: The stars of Director of Destiny, Director of Middle, and Director of Wealth, when large, pure, and moist, are auspicious, indicating that the Son of Heaven will bestow much grace. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The three platforms consist of six stars, representing the positions of the three ministers. If the colors of the stars are uniform and bright, it signifies the overflowing of virtue.
