The quality of a virtuous person's energy

賢人氣，視四方，常有大雲，五色具者，其下賢人隱也。青雲潤澤蔽日，在日西北，為舉賢良。

The method of observing the aura of a virtuous person is to look in all directions. If there are often large clouds with all five colors present, there must be a virtuous person hidden beneath them. If the cloud is green, bright and moist, covering the sun and located in the northwest direction, it indicates that the court is about to appoint virtuous and capable officials.

將軍之氣，如龍如虎，在殺氣中，兩軍相當，若發軍上，則其將猛銳欲動也，吉凶以日辰決之；若無軍在外，亦當有暴兵起。

The military spirit resembles a dragon or a tiger, existing within a harsh and severe atmosphere. When two armies are facing each other, if this spirit arises over the camp of one side, it indicates that the general on that side is brave and sharp, about to launch an attack. The specific fortune or misfortune should be determined by the heavenly stem and earthly branch of that day. If there are no armies outside at that time, it foretells unexpected military events.

城營上氣如火煙，或如山林、竹木，或白色而有赤氣繞之，或紫黑如門樓，或上黑下赤如旌旗，或如張弓弩，或如塵埃，本大而高，首銳而卑，或如囷倉，正白，見日益明，或白如粉沸，或如夜火光照人，此皆猛將氣也。

The air above city walls and camps resembles fire smoke, or looks like mountain forests and bamboo, or is white with a red halo around it, or is dark purple-black like a gatehouse, or is black on top and red below like a banner, or resembles a drawn bow and arrow, or looks like rising dust, with a thick base that is high and sharp at the top, or appears like a round granary called 'qun', or is pure white and becomes even brighter when the sun shines on it, or is white like boiling powder, or looks like the light of fire at night: these are all signs of a fierce general's aura.

軍上氣，黃白而轉澤者，將有盛德，不可擊；軍上氣發，漸漸如云，變作山形者，將有深謀，不可擊，若在吾，速戰，大勝。軍上氣黑下，赤氣在前者，將精悍不可當；軍上氣如交蛇向人，此猛將氣也，不可當，若在吾軍，戰必大勝；赤氣上與天連，軍中必有良將；軍上氣，青白而高者，將勇，大戰；前白後青而高者，將弱而士勇；前大後小，將怯不明；軍上氣青而疏散者，其將怯弱，可擊。

The air above the enemy's troops is yellowish white and turns moist, indicating the general has great virtue and cannot be attacked; the air above the army spreads out like clouds and forms the shape of a mountain, showing the general has deep strategies and cannot be attacked—this kind of air if appears over our troops, we should fight quickly and will achieve a great victory. The air below the army turns black with red air in front, indicating the general is strong and hard to resist. The air above the army looks like two snakes entwined and rushing towards people, which is the aura of a fierce general, which cannot be resisted; if it appears over our troops, we will certainly win a great victory in battle. Red air rising up to connect with the sky indicates there must be a capable general in the army. The air above the army is bright blue and high, indicating the general is brave and there will be a big battle; if the air is white in front and blue behind and high, the general is weak but the soldiers are brave; if the front part is large and the back part is small, the general is timid and lacks wisdom; if the air is blue and sparse and scattered, the general is weak and can be attacked.

勝兵氣，上與天連，或如火光，或如山堤上有林木，或如埃塵粉沸，其色黃白，或如旌旗，無風而揚，揮勢指敵，或白氣粉沸如樓，緣以赤氣，或如人持斧向敵，或如蛇舉頭向敵，或如埃塵，前卑後高，或如牛馬，頭低尾昂，或如旌旗，如鋒刃向人，或有人如牽牛，或如乳虎，或如疋帛，或如覆舟，或氣似堤覆，前後皆白，此皆雄兵猛士之氣，不可擊，若在我軍上，急戰，大勝。

The aura of a victorious army rises upward and connects with the heavens, or appears like firelight, or like dense forests growing on a mountain embankment, or like dust and powder boiling and surging, with a yellow and white color, or like banners that flutter without wind, their movement pointing toward the enemy, or like white vapor rising in a tower shape with red edges, or like a person holding an axe facing the enemy, or like a snake raising its head toward the enemy, or like dust that is low in front and high at the back, or like oxen and horses with their heads low and tails high, or like banners that appear like sharp blades and swords facing people, or like someone leading a cow, or like a nursing tigress, or like a piece of silk, or like a capsized boat, or like a dam overturned, with white color on both ends: these are the auras of strong troops and brave warriors, which should not be attacked. If such an aura appears over our army, we should quickly engage in battle and achieve a great victory.

軍上氣，黃白色潤澤重厚者勝；軍上發黃氣，將士精勇，不可擊，若在吾軍，可戰；軍營上有赤黃氣上達於天者，不可擊；軍上有五色氣上與天連，此天應之軍，不可擊；軍上氣，上小下大，其軍士日增益，不可擊；軍上氣，遙望如鬥雞，赤白相隨，在雲中，得天助，不可擊；軍上氣，上銳，其色黃白圓而澤者，其將勇猛，士卒能強戰，不可擊。

The air above the military camp appears yellow-white, moist and dense, indicating that the opposing force will be defeated. If the army emits a yellow aura, its soldiers are vigorous and brave, and it should not be attacked; if this aura belongs to our army, we may engage in battle. If the military camp has a red-yellow aura rising straight to the sky, it should not be attacked. If the army emits a multicolored aura rising to connect with the heavens, this indicates divine protection and should not be attacked. If the aura above the army is narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, the army's strength will increase over time, and it should not be attacked. If the aura appears distant like two fighting roosters, with red and white colors following each other in the clouds, it indicates heavenly assistance and should not be attacked. If the aura is sharp at the top, yellow-white in color, round and moist, it indicates a capable general and soldiers who can fight bravely, and it should not be attacked.

雲如日月，而有赤氣繞之，似日月暈，或有光者，所見之城邑，不可攻；雲氣如伏虎居上，或如華蓋，或如杵形向外，或如赤馬，或如山嶽，皆不可攻；敵上有氣或雲，如中天至而及我軍，常有此而不變者，不可攻；軍上常有氣者，難攻；有雲狀如鳥飛去者，其國戰勝；兩軍相當，敵上有氣如飛烏徘徊，或來而高者，兵精，難擊；夜視彼軍，上有黑氣出，上有赤氣，臨我軍上，彼強我弱，弱能破強，小能擊大，大戰大勝，小戰小勝。

Clouds that resemble the sun or moon with a red aura surrounding them, like a solar halo or lunar halo, or that appear bright, indicate that the city under such clouds should not be attacked. Clouds that look like a crouching tiger, or like a 'Huagai' (the canopy on a king's carriage), or like a pestle extending outward, or like a red horse, or like high mountains and great peaks, should also not be attacked. If the enemy's sky has a cloud or an aura that descends straight from the middle heaven to our army's sky and remains unchanged for a long time, we should not attack. If there is a constant aura covering our military camp, it is difficult to attack. If clouds appear like birds flying away, the country will achieve victory in battle. When two armies face each other, if the enemy's sky has an aura resembling circling crows or if the aura rises high and drifts toward our side, the enemy's troops are strong and difficult to attack. If at night we observe the enemy's camp and see black clouds rising from it while red clouds cover our army's sky, even if the enemy is strong and we are weak, the weak can defeat the strong, a small force can overcome a large one, and great battles will result in great victories, while small battles will result in small victories.

望四方，有赤氣如鳥在黑氣中，或如黑人在赤氣中，或如赤杵在烏氣中，或如人十十五五有行列，或狀如旌旗在烏氣中，有赤雲氣在前者，其兵精銳，不可當；雲氣三匹帛，前橫後大，在軍上者，戰勝。

Looking in all directions, if there is red vapor resembling a bird amidst black vapor, or a black-clothed person amidst red vapor, or a red rod amidst black vapor, or people arranged in groups of ten and five in lines, or a shape like a banner standing amidst black vapor, with red cloud vapor leading in front, such troops are highly skilled and cannot be resisted. If the cloud vapor resembles three pieces of silk, spread out in front and wide behind, appearing over a military camp, then the army will achieve victory.

敗兵氣，囚廢枯散，如馬肝色，或如死灰，或如偃魚，或如偃蓋，或乍見乍聚乍散，如霧始起，或如群羊、如群豬在氣霧中，皆衰亂也。

The appearance of a defeated army is one of decline, captivity, abandonment, withering, and dispersion: it may appear as dark purple like horse's liver, or like burnt-out ashes, or like a flipped fish, or like an overturned car cover, or it may appear and disappear, gather and scatter, like the mist just rising, or like flocks of sheep and pigs lying hidden in the mist—these are all signs of decline and disorder.

Attacking them will surely result in victory.

軍上氣，上大下小者，士卒日減；軍上十日無氣發者，其軍必敗；十日無氣，而忽有赤白氣乍出即滅者，外聲欲戰而實欲退散；黑雲氣如壞山，墮軍上，名曰營頭之氣，其軍必敗散；軍上氣，如火光夜照人者，軍士散亂；軍上氣出而半絕者，欲敗；漸盡者，走；一絕一敗，再絕再敗，三絕三敗；在東發白氣者，災深；

If black mist resembling a cow or a horse gradually enters the camp from the fog, called 'Heavenly Dog Devouring Blood,' that army will scatter and be defeated.

軍上氣，蒼黑亂者，士卒飢；兩軍相當，十里之內，三里之外，望彼軍上氣高，而前後白青散者，敗氣也，急擊之；雲氣如人頭，臨軍上，戰大敗，流血滿谷；雲如雞如兔，臨營上者，軍敗走；雲氣蓋道，蔽蒙晝晦者，飯不暇食，炊不暇熟，宜急去之，不然必敗；軍上氣黑而卑，如樓狀，軍不移，必敗；軍上氣，先青而漸變黑者，其將欲死散；

If there is a cloud resembling a tail, hidden in the mist and pressing over the military camp, it indicates that someone within the army is conspiring with the enemy outside. When the army is moving, if there is a white aura resembling a pig pressing forward, the entire army will be greatly disturbed and should be prepared in advance.

日暈，有氣如死蛇屬暈者，將死，兩軍相當，不利先舉；日暈，旁有赤雲，如縣鍾，其下將死；日月暈，有背氣，所臨者敗；軍上有白虹，及曲霓者，敗；白虹及霓入營者，敗；日暈，氣薄惡，及後至先去，其下軍敗；日暈，有四缺，在外軍悉敗散；凡日月暈與氣，以先有者為發，先去者為散；軍上有日旁虹霓，不可逆之，若得其逆，宜徙去之。

暴兵氣，白如瓜蔓連結，部隊相逐，須臾罷而復出，或至八九，而來不斷者，有急賊猝至，宜防之；白氣如仙人衣，千萬連結，部隊相逐，罷而復興，如是者，當有千里兵來，宜備之；黑氣從彼來之我軍者，欲襲我也，敵人吉，宜備不宜戰，敵還，從而擊之，必得小勝。

天色蒼茫，而有此氣，依支干日數，內無風雨，則所發之方，時則凶時剋日，則自消散，此氣所發之方，當有使告急，一人來，則氣一條，依數計之，若散滿一方，則有眾來，依日支干數，內有風雨，則伏。

In the dim and misty sky, when such an atmosphere appears, one should calculate the timing based on the day branch and heavenly stem. The appearance of "Qu Qi" resembles a person holding a knife and a shield, or clouds shaped like a seated person with a red color; where it covers a city, there will be sudden arrival of troops, causing great alarm, which lasts only a moment before it leaves. Red clouds resembling a person holding a symbol of authority indicate that troops will arrive and not cease. Clouds shaped like a square rainbow or a red rainbow, with military affairs suddenly occurring below. Clouds resembling flags indicate sudden military actions. Clouds resembling a tiger leaping or a person walking, with a white and withered color, indicate sudden military affairs. White clouds shaped like a ribbon across the road, stretching across the sky, indicate sudden military affairs.

候敵氣，上有雲，下亦有雲者，兵必至；白虹所出，必有暴兵流血；赤雲如火，所向兵至；雲氣如匹布著天，經丑未者，天下多兵，赤者尤甚；有雲如胡人列陳，天下兵起；白氣廣五六丈，東西竟天，天下兵起；有雲如豹，四五枚，相聚，其國兵大起；雲如狗，四五以上相聚，兵起四方；

The method of observing the enemy's atmosphere: if there are clouds both above and below, armies will surely arrive; where a white rainbow appears, there will be sudden military affairs and bloodshed; if red clouds resemble fire, armies will arrive in the direction they point; if clouds spread like a piece of cloth across the sky and pass through the Chou and Wei positions (the line from Northeast to Southwest), there will be much military conflict, and red clouds indicate the worst situation; if clouds resemble the formations of barbarians, military conflicts will arise throughout the land; if white clouds span five or six zhang in width and stretch across the sky from east to west, military conflicts will break out; if clouds resemble a leopard, with four or five pieces gathered together, that country will experience great military turmoil; if clouds resemble dogs, with four or five pieces gathered together, military actions will start in all directions.

清明無雲，獨有赤雲赫然者，所見之地，兵起；四望無雲，獨有黑雲極天，名曰天溝，天下兵起，雲半天則兵半，起三日內有雨，則災解；壬子日，候四方無雲，獨有雲如旌旗，其下兵起，若遍四方，則天下盡有兵；雲氣一道，上白下黃，或白色如疋布，長數丈，或上黃下白如旗狀，長二三丈，或長氣純赤而委曲一道如布帛，皆謂之蚩尤旗，見則兵大起。

風雨氣，如魚龍行，其色蒼潤，或黃氣蔽日昏慘，或如積土，或如累盆，黃色潤厚，朝東夕西，壓日，或奄之，皆風雨之氣也。朝視日上，有黑雲氣，如霧壓日，日光旁射，其色慘淡黃白者，其日有風雨；晚日欲入有之，則其夜有風雨；

If in the morning, looking at the sun's upper part, there is black cloud resembling mist pressing upon the sun, with sunlight shining from the sides, appearing pale yellow or white, then there will be wind and rain that day. If this phenomenon occurs in the evening as the sun is setting, then there will be wind and rain during the night.

雲氣如亂穰，大風將至，視所從來避之；雲甚厚而潤大，雨必暴至；四始之日，有黑雲氣如陣，厚重而潤者，多雨；日始出，有暈氣如車蓋，在日上者，其日雨；日上下有黑雲氣，如蛟龍者，必有風雨；雲氣如黑蛇沖日，其下有大雨水；月初生，色黃者多晴，色青多雨，色潤白者大雨；

On the days of the beginning of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, if dark clouds appear like a military formation and are dense and moist, there will be much rain afterwards. When the sun first appears, if a halo-like mist covers the sun like a carriage canopy, rain will come. If dark clouds resembling a dragon appear above and below the sun, there will certainly be wind and rain. If clouds like a black snake rise directly toward the sun, there will be heavy rain below. When the moon first appears, if it has a yellow color, it indicates clear weather; if it has a green color, it indicates rain; if it has a moist white color, it indicates a heavy rain.

蒼雲氣入北斗，多大風；黃雲氣蔽北斗，明日雨；白氣掩北斗，不過三日，雨；青雲氣掩北斗，五日內雨；天無雲而白，斗上下獨有雲，五日內大雨；日入，後有白光如氣，自地至天，直入北斗，所歷星皆失色，其夜必有大風；太白出，氣長數丈，多風雨，所指處，兵大起；辰星出，氣長一丈，大雨水。

Green clouds entering the Big Dipper indicate strong winds; yellow clouds covering the Big Dipper mean rain on the second day; white clouds obscuring the Big Dipper bring rain within three days; green clouds covering the Big Dipper result in rain within five days; if the sky is clear but white light appears, with clouds only above and below the Big Dipper, there will be heavy rain within five days; after the sun sets, if there is a white light like mist rising from the ground straight up to the sky and entering the Big Dipper, all the constellations it passes will lose their brightness, and there will certainly be a strong wind that night; if the bright star (Venus) appears with a long mist-like trail several zhang in length, there will be much wind and rain, and warfare will increase where the mist points; if the water star (Mercury) appears with a mist-like trail one zhang long, it indicates heavy rain and flooding.

海旁蜃氣象樓臺，廣野氣成宮闕。自華以南，氣上黑下赤；嵩高三河，氣正赤；恆山之北，氣青；渤海之間，氣正黑；江淮之間，氣皆白。

韓雲如布，周雲如車輪，秦雲如行人，衛雲如犬，魏雲如鼠，齊雲如絳衣，越雲如龍，蜀雲如囷，宋雲如車，吳雲如日。當其地而見者，不占。

In the state of Han, the clouds resemble a cloth; in the state of Zhou, they resemble a chariot wheel; in the state of Qin, they resemble travelers; in the state of Wei, they resemble dogs; in the state of Qi, they resemble deep red garments; in the state of Yue, they resemble dragons; in the state of Shu, they resemble round granaries called qun; in the state of Song, they resemble carts; in the state of Wu, they resemble the Sun. However, if one sees the clouds that are characteristic of one's own region within one's own region, that is considered normal and does not require interpretation.

雲氣如刀劍，出兩角間，有陰謀，天子無出殿廷，期不出三十日；青氣入角，天子有疾，出之禍除。赤氣入左角，兵起；右角，國兵驚，戰不利；赤氣入角而波揚者，有火災，如行者將奔命；赤氣從兩角過，入亢，有過兵；赤氣從北斗直過兩角間，回，有過兵；白氣出入兩角，戰不勝；白氣從兩角過，入亢者，有過客；

If red mist enters the left star of the Horn mansion, military actions will start; if it enters the right star, there will be disturbance in the army and military operations will be unfavorable. If red mist enters the Horn mansion and swirls like waves, there will be a fire. If the mist appears as if walking, generals will have to hurry and obey orders for military campaigns. If red mist passes through between the two stars of the Horn mansion and enters the Neck mansion, there will be passing troops. If red mist goes straight from the Big Dipper through between the two stars of the Horn mansion and then returns, there will be passing troops. If white mist enters and exits between the two stars of the Horn mansion, military campaigns will not be successful. If white mist passes through between the two stars of the Horn mansion and enters the Neck mansion, there will be passing guests.

蒼氣入左角，有兵，兵敗；蒼雲氣出右角，兵在外者戰有憂；蒼白雲氣出入兩角，兵有大敗；黑雲氣出入兩角，用兵，偏將敗，有水災；黑氣從兩角過，入亢，有過兵；黃氣入兩角間，天子有祠祀事；黃白氣潤澤入角，王者得地。

Green qi entering the left angle star indicates military affairs and a great defeat; green cloud qi emerging from the right angle star suggests worry for troops fighting outside; green and white qi entering and exiting between the two angle stars indicates a major defeat in battle; black qi entering and exiting between the two angle stars indicates the deputy general's failure and also water disaster; black qi passing through and entering the Kangle mansion indicates passing troops; yellow qi entering between the two angle stars indicates the emperor has a worship ceremony; bright yellow and white qi moistening and shining into the Jiaoxu mansion indicates the king will gain territory.

雲氣青色入亢，人疫；出氐入亢，人君有疾；黑雲氣入亢，有水災，一曰有使出外言水事；（《荊州占》曰：人多瘧疾）黑氣出氐入亢，君有疾，死；赤雲氣入亢，廊廟間有陳兵，赤而揚波，大人憂，大疫；黃白雲氣入亢，有治事；白雲氣入亢，有土功，人疾病。

Clouds of a blue color entering the mansion of the Neck indicate an outbreak of plague among the people; clouds emerging from the mansion of the Root and entering the mansion of the Neck indicate the ruler is ill; clouds of black color entering the mansion of the Neck indicate flooding, or alternatively, that envoys will be sent abroad to discuss water control (the original commentary cites the "Jingzhou Divination" which says: the people suffer greatly from malaria); black clouds emerging from the mansion of the Root and entering the mansion of the Neck indicate the ruler is ill and will die; clouds of red color entering the mansion of the Neck indicate that troops will be stationed in the halls of the palace, if the red clouds surge like waves, then the nobleman will have worries and there will be a great plague; clouds of yellow and white color entering the mansion of the Neck indicate the commencement of state affairs; clouds of white color entering the mansion of the Neck indicate construction projects and illness among the people.

雲氣入氐，黃白色，有土功；黑色，大水；赤，有內兵；蒼白色，疫疹大行；白色，天下疫久不散，宮中有女喪；黑氣入氐、房間，天子遣使於諸侯，有口令。

Clouds entering the Root mansion indicate earth and wood construction projects if they are yellowish-white; if they are black, there will be a great flood; if they are red, there will be internal military disturbances; if they are bluish-white, epidemic diseases and skin disorders will spread widely; if they are white, the plague will linger throughout the land for a long time, and there will be the death of women in the palace. If black clouds enter between the Root mansion and the Room mansion, the Son of Heaven will send envoys to the feudal lords and issue verbal orders.

Yellow clouds entering the House of Room indicate that foreign envoys will present tribute. Black clouds departing from the House of Room indicate trouble within the palace. Black clouds entering the House of Room suggest that the feudal lords will send envoys to convey oral imperial orders, and there will be great floods. Red clouds entering the House of Room indicate internal turmoil in the palace and the outbreak of major military conflicts. If red clouds appear like human figures entering the House of Room, it means the empress will become pregnant, or there will be occurrences of treachery. Red clouds appearing like waves entering the House of Room indicate fires in the palace, military conflicts arising between the ancestral temple and the court, and the sovereign feeling anxious and unsettled. Deep red clouds entering the House of Room indicate the death of a prince or king among the feudal lords, expected within three years.

蒼白雲氣入房，將相憂；白氣如大道，入房，委蛇入漢，國有大水，兵起宮中，人民流亡，飢死路旁，尸骸不收，不過二年，帝王崩，婦女傭客不還；雲氣如帶，經兩角間，入房，關門閉，再經之，兵起，三經之，天下不通。

This will happen within two years, the emperor will die, women will go out to work as hired laborers and not be able to return home; if the cloud appears like a ribbon passing between the two stars of the Horn mansion and entering the Room mansion, border passes and city gates will need to be closed, and if it passes again, military actions will arise, and if it passes a third time, the roads throughout the country will be blocked.

If white clouds enter the Heart Mansion, there will be rebellion by the Son of Heaven's close ministers and military troubles; if white clouds enter the left star of the Heart Mansion, the crown prince will receive rewards. If red clouds enter the Heart Mansion, a new king will be established; if red clouds depart from the Heart Mansion and move southward, someone close to the Son of Heaven will flee away.

赤雲氣鋒銳正刺心，天子憂；蒼白氣入心中星，天子憂；黃氣入心，天子有子孫喜；入右星，太子喜；黃白雲氣潤澤如匹布，正抵心下，外國有來歸者；雲氣狀如彗帚，色赤如血，入心，天子遇賊；出心，天子有殺伐；若出遠則穀貴，殺伐人於千里之外。

Clouds of yellow and white color, smooth and resembling a piece of cloth, lying directly beneath the Heart Mansion indicate foreign states will come to submit. If the cloud shape resembles a broom and is red like blood, entering the Heart Mansion indicates the sovereign will suffer from bandits; if the cloud departs from the Heart Mansion, the sovereign will carry out punishment and military campaigns; if the cloud goes far away, grain prices will rise, and those punished will be far away in the thousands of li.

青雲氣入尾，故臣有來歸者；出尾，臣有死者；白氣入尾，故臣有謀來歸而受誅者；黑氣入尾，故臣有來歸骸骨者；赤黃氣入尾，有使來言兵事；黑氣出尾，人民流亡；青氣出尾，臣作亂；赤黃氣出尾，君遣使於諸侯，言兵事。

黃白雲氣入箕，蠻夷有使來；黃雲氣入箕，有獻美女者；變而色黑，道死不至；色蒼，道上為風所覆；蒼白雲氣入箕，其國有災；出之，災除；黃白雲氣出箕，天子使者出；一曰：宮中美人有出者；赤雲氣出箕，兵出；入之。兵入。

If a red cloud enters the Ox Mansion like waves, there will be military actions and large-scale losses of cattle and horses. A white cloud entering the Ox Mansion indicates military conflicts and funerals.

虹出牽牛之度，有崩城，期二年。
