The twelve constellations of Qin, Zhao, and others were all previously placed within the degree of the Girl Mansion in the old star map; now only five constellations, namely Qi, Zheng, Zhao, Yue, and Zhou, remain within the Girl Mansion, and their positions differ from the old map. Liyu is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of three stars located to the southeast and north of the substitute star. Tianleicheng is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of thirteen stars, shaped like a looped rope, located west of the Weeping Star and the Crying Star. Xuliang is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of four stars located south of the Girl Mansion. Tianqian is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of ten stars located northeast of the Northern Gate Star. Tianwang is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of one star located southwest of the Northern Gate Star. Fuyue is the same in ancient and modern records, consisting of three stars located northwest of the Eight Champions. Dongjiu, in the old map, was said to connect with the distance path of the East Wall and to be outside the Milky Way; now actual measurements show it connects with the distance path of the Kui Mansion and is biased to the north, with three stars entering the Milky Way, and does not connect with the distance path of the East Wall. A total of ten stars are located north of the East Wall, near Wangliang. Tianyin, in the old map, was drawn to span across the equator; now actual measurements show it is near the Yellow Path, located west of the Five Carriages and the Big Dipper's handle.

Auguries from the Eight Grains

Eight grains grow.

The Shennong text says: Millet and jujube share the same vital energy and grow together. They are produced in the valley to the right of Yangtou Mountain in Shangdang. After sowing, they sprout in seventy days, and mature in another sixty days, completing the process in a total of one hundred and thirty days. The days to avoid are the Yin day and the Mao day. Millet and elm share the same vital energy and grow together. They are produced in the valley to the left of Dalang Mountain. They sprout in sixty days and mature in forty days, completing the process in a total of one hundred days. The day to avoid is the Chou day. Soybean and locust tree share the same vital energy and grow together. They are produced in the valley of Jushi Mountain. They bloom in ninety days and mature in sixty days, completing the process in a total of one hundred and fifty days. The day to avoid is the Mao day. What is meant by 'growing together with a certain wood' is that this kind of grain shares the same vital energy with that kind of tree and plant, and they share the same energy, thus their prosperity, decline, and value can be mutually predicted.

Small beans grow with the same energy as the elm, and they grow in the valleys of the Nongshi mountain. They flower in sixty days and mature in fifty days, completing their growth in one hundred and ten days. They are to be avoided on the卯 day. Glutinous millet grows with the same energy as the elm, and it grows in the valleys of the Nongshi mountain. It produces ears in seventy days and matures in sixty days, completing its growth in one hundred and thirty days. It is to be avoided on the午 day. Buckwheat grows with the same energy as the apricot, and it grows in the valleys of the Changshi mountain. It produces ears in twenty-four days and matures in fifty days, completing its growth in seventy-five days. It is to be avoided on the子 day. Hemp grows with the same energy as the jujube, and it grows in the valleys of the Nongshi mountain. It produces ears in seventy days and matures in sixty days, completing its growth in one hundred and thirty days. It is to be avoided on the未 day,午 day,辰 day, and亥 day. Wheat grows with the same energy as the peach, and it grows in the valleys of the Xushi mountain. It produces ears in three hundred days and matures in thirty days, completing its growth in three hundred and thirty days. It is to be avoided on the子 day; wheat is a winter crop, so it takes longer days to complete its growth. Rice grows with the same energy as the willow, and it grows in the valleys of the Nongshi mountain. It produces ears in eighty days and matures in seventy days, completing its growth in one hundred and fifty days. It is to be avoided on the亥 day.

Among the five grains, those sown on the days of "birth" and "growth" will surely bear much fruit; those sown on the days of "old age" and "death" will not only fail to bear fruit, but even fail to sprout. If sown on days to be avoided, the harvest will be insufficient to sustain even one person. The birth day of millet is in the hour of Si (the original text mistakenly writes "Yi"), the day of illness is in You, the day of growth is in Zi, the day of old age is in Xu, it dislikes the stems Bing and Ding, and avoids the hours Yin and Mao. The birth day of millet is in Yin, the day of illness is in Wu, the day of growth is in Bing and Ding, the day of old age is in Xu, the day of death is in Shen, it dislikes the stem Ren, and avoids the hour Chou. The birth day of beans is in Shen, the day of illness is in Zi, the day of growth is in Ren, the day of old age is in Chou, it dislikes the stems Jia and Yi, and avoids the stems Bing and Ding. The birth day of wheat is in You, the day of illness is in Mao, the day of growth is in Chen, the day of old age is in Wu, the day of death is in Si, it dislikes the stem Xu, and avoids the hour Zi.

When the Tai Su is in the years of the four seasons (the years of Chou, Chen, Wei, and Xu), during the time when the葶苈 seeds mature, it is appropriate to plant millet and beans; during the time around the summer solstice, it is appropriate to plant millet and hemp; after 150 days following the summer solstice, when the earth energy rises, it is appropriate to plant wheat. When the Tai Su is in the years of the four central branches (the years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You), during the time when the mulberry fruits mature, it is appropriate to plant millet and beans; during the summer solstice, it is appropriate to plant millet and millet; after 90 days following the summer solstice, when the earth energy rises, it is appropriate to plant wheat. When the Tai Su is in the years of the four first months (the years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai), during the time when the spring silkworms rest and then resume activity, it is appropriate to plant millet and beans; 50 days before the summer solstice, it is appropriate to plant rice, millet, and millet; after 80 days following the summer solstice, when the earth energy rises, it is appropriate to plant wheat.

The eight grains are in conflict between yin and yang.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: "Grains each have yin and yang, and the two opposing ones correspond to each other; the four names of prosperity and decline, Wang, Xiang, Fei, and Xiu, are each associated with their respective directions." The Yellow Emperor's Essential Classic says: "Spring and summer belong to yang, while autumn and winter belong to yin. In the yin seasons, low prices should be set, and in the yang seasons, high prices should be set. Therefore, low prices in spring and summer are in harmony, while high prices in autumn and winter are against the natural order." The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: "Rice and wheat are yin and yang to each other. When rice is cheap, wheat is expensive, and after fifteen days, the situation reverses, and their prices become equal. Millet and small beans are yin and yang to each other. When millet is cheap, small beans are expensive. Hemp and barley are yin and yang to each other. When hemp is cheap, barley is expensive, and when barley is cheap, hemp is expensive. Millet and large beans are yin and yang to each other. When millet is cheap, large beans are expensive, and when large beans are cheap, millet is expensive."

Monitor the prosperity and decline of the eight grains and the quality of miscellaneous annual products and sericulture.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: To determine the price of millet, take the lowest price in the last ten days of the month of戌 (the ninth lunar month) as the "base" price. Take the highest price in the first ten days of the month of亥 (the tenth lunar month) as the "end" price. If the end price is one coin higher than the base price, multiply it by five and add the base price to determine the highest price for the coming spring and summer. If the price in the month of亥 is the same as in the month of戌, then multiply the price of the month of子 (the eleventh lunar month) by the price of the month of亥. For each coin increase, multiply by three and add the base price to determine the highest price for the coming spring and summer. When this prediction is accurate, it occurs in the month that is opposite to the one in question. If the prices of millet do not rise in the three winter months and remain the same, then the price will not rise in the coming spring.

The method for predicting millet prices takes the lowest price on the 25th day of the lower half of the month of You (August) as the base price, and the highest price on the upper half of the month of Xu (September) as the final price. For every one cash increase over the base price, multiply by five and add the base price to determine the highest price for the coming spring and summer. If the prices remain the same during the three winter months, then the prices for the coming spring and summer will not increase. The method for predicting flax prices takes the price on the 25th day of the lower half of the month of Xu (September) as the base price, and the price on the upper half of the month of Hai (October) as the final price. Multiply the final price by the base price, for every one cash increase over the base price, multiply by five and add the base price to determine the prices for the coming spring and summer. If the prices remain the same during the three winter months, then the prices for the coming spring and summer will not increase.

The method for predicting the price of soybeans takes the lowest price on the 25th day of the lower half of the month of Ji Hai (October) as the base, and the highest price on the upper half of the month of Ji Zi (November) as the end. Multiply the end price by the base price. For every increase of one coin, multiply by five and add it to the base price, to determine the highest price for the coming spring and summer. If the prices remain stable throughout the winter months, then spring and summer will not see further increases. The method for predicting the price of wheat takes the lowest price on the 25th day of the lower half of the month of Ji Wu (May) as the base, and the highest price on the upper half of the month of Ji Wei (June) as the end. Multiply the end price by the base price. For every increase of one coin, multiply by five and add it to the base price, to determine the highest price for the coming winter and spring. (The original text's '极责' is likely a mistake for '极贵'.) If the prices remain stable throughout the summer and autumn months, then winter will not see further increases.

The Shīkuàng Divination says: It is customary to use the first to twelfth days of the first lunar month to observe the weather conditions, each day representing one month of the year. If the yellow qi appears during the year and the color is not correct, it indicates that the harvest will be uneven. If the wind comes from the west or the southwest during the first lunar month, it indicates that grain prices will be high. If the wind comes from the east, grain prices will be low. The Huangdi Divination says: On the first卯day of the first lunar month, observe the wind. If it is a cold wind, grain prices will be slightly high; when it reaches the month that is opposite to卯, grain prices will be very high. If on that first卯day there is no cold wind but the weather is warm, the harvest will be average. If it rains on theJiashenday in spring, the five grains will mature; if it rains on theJiashenday in summer, the five grains will be excellent. The Shen Nong Divination says: If there is wind and rain on the first day of the first lunar month, by the third lunar month grain prices will be high, and each stone of grain will sell for five hundred coins.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If it rains on the days of Jiayin or Yimao in spring, the rainwater seeps five inches into the ground, and the price of grain slightly rises; if it does not rise at that time, the price of grain will certainly be high in summer. On the first day of the first lunar month, if it is the day of Bing or Ding, the price of millet and foxtail millet will be high; if it is the day of Wu or Ji, the price of millet will be high; if it is the day of Geng or Xin, the price of hemp and rice will be high; if it is the day of Jiayin or Yimao, the price of wheat and barley will be high; if it is the day of Ren or Gui, the price of soybeans will be high. On the third day of the first lunar month, if there is supposed to be wind but there is none, then all regions will have a poor harvest, indicating that millet will be completely unharvested. Dongfang Shuo's Divination says: If it rains on the first day of the first lunar month, the wheat in low-lying fields will mature during the year, and the price of millet and foxtail millet will slightly increase. The Peigong Divination says: Usually, on the first lunar month, observe which of the Sheng days comes first; if Jiachen comes first, the price of wheat will be high; if Bingchen comes first, the price of millet will be high; if Wuchen comes first, the price of millet will be high; if Gengchen comes first, the price of soybeans will be high; if Renchen comes first, the price of small beans will be high. If the first day of the first lunar month is the day of Jiayin, the price of grain will be very high; counting twelve days from the first day, each of these twelve days will be used to predict the price of grain for each of the twelve months.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If there is wind and rain on the last day of the first lunar month and the first day of the second lunar month, the rice will be poor and grain prices will rise high; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the second lunar month and the first day of the third lunar month, there will be a great flood in the year, and the wheat will be poor; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the twelfth lunar month and the first day of the first lunar month, spring will be dry; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the third lunar month and the first day of the fourth lunar month, spring grain prices will be high; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the fourth lunar month and the first day of the fifth lunar month, there will be a great flood in the year, and the wheat will be poor; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the fifth lunar month and the first day of the sixth lunar month, spring will be dry; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the sixth lunar month and the first day of the seventh lunar month, spring grain prices will be high; if there is wind and rain on the last day of the seventh lunar month and the first day of the eighth lunar month, grain prices will be high throughout the year.

Dongfang Shuo's divination says: On the first day of the third lunar month, if it is a Ji day, the big wheat will mature; if it is a Geng day, the millet will be mature but there will be warfare and bandits; if it is an Xin day, the low-lying fields will have no harvest; if it is a Ren day, the land will be barren and grain will be expensive; if it is a Gui day, the harvest will be mature. In the third lunar month, if there are three Mao days, the soybeans will grow well; if there are not three Mao days, it indicates drought, and it is advisable to change to planting millet. In the fourth lunar month, if it is a Bingwu day, the summer crops will grow vigorously; if there are not three Mao days in the fourth lunar month, it indicates drought, and it is advisable to change to planting hemp. Jing Fang's divination says: In the fifth lunar month, if there are not three Mao days, it indicates drought, and it is advisable to plant soybeans; in the sixth lunar month, if there are not three Mao days, the millet will not grow well. Shen Nong's divination says: In the eighth lunar month, if there are three Mao days, the wheat will be excellent; if there are not three Mao days, the wheat will not be good. Jing Fang's divination says: In the eighth lunar month, if there are not three Mao days, it indicates drought, and it is advisable to plant wheat.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: If there is wind on the first day of the fourth lunar month, blowing from the east, starting from the time of the rooster's crow until sunrise, millet and foxtail millet can yield three hu per mu; if it continues until noon, the yield is twenty hu per mu; if it lasts until midnight, the yield is thirty hu per mu—these figures are calculated based on average land quality. The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: If the summer solstice falls on the first day of the fifth lunar month, the country will experience great disturbance and grain prices will be slightly high; if it falls on the fifth or sixth day of the fourth lunar month, grain prices will be very high; if it falls on the tenth or twelfth day, all five grains will be very expensive; if it falls on the twenty-seventh or twenty-ninth day, the ruler will suffer great disturbance; if it falls on the last day of the month, there will be a great mourning in the country; if it falls on the first day of the sixth lunar month, the people will resort to cannibalism, and this prediction will be fulfilled within five years. In general, the summer solstice falling in the fourth lunar month is most favorable.

It is also said that if the summer solstice falls in the Heavenly Gate position (the Northwest Qian trigram), the country will experience great disturbances; if it falls in the Earth Gate (the Southeast Xun trigram), after the rains of Grain Rain, grain will be very expensive; if it falls in the Human Gate (the Southwest Kun trigram), the effects will be seen among the Three Dukes, officials, and ministers. Whenever predicting high grain prices, one must carefully observe within the two days before and after. It is also said that if the summer solstice occurs at the end or beginning of May or June, people will sell their fields and houses, grain prices will rise tenfold, and people will eat each other, resulting in a very poor harvest. Even if the price of land and houses is low, one should not buy them. If the beginning of Summer occurs on a Wuzi day and there is a strong wind coming from the north, the price of grain per stone will rise three hundredfold.

The Yellow Emperor's Essentials states: If it rains on the Yimao day in spring, the grain price will be high in summer; if it rains on the Dingmao day in summer, the grain price will be high in autumn; if it rains on the Xinmao day in autumn, the grain price will be high in winter; if it rains on the Guimao day in winter, the grain price will be high in spring. The price increase is calculated as follows: if there is rain on one Maodays, the price of each hu increases by 100 wen; if on two Maodays, it increases by 200 wen; if on three Maodays, it increases by 300 wen; if on four Maodays, the price of each hu will be equivalent to one jin of gold. The Book of Peigong states: On the first day of the third lunar month, if it is Yimao, the grain price in Jingchu will be low; if it is Dingmao, the grain price in Zhou and Qin will be high; if it is Jimao, the grain price in Yan and Zhao will be high; if it is Xinmao, the grain price in Han and Wei will be high; if it is Guimao, the grain price in Liang and Lu will be high.

The Shennong Divination text says: Whenever insects eat plum trees, millet becomes expensive; when they eat jujube trees, millet becomes expensive; when they eat apricot trees, wheat becomes expensive; when they eat schizandra trees, hemp becomes expensive; when they eat mulberry trees, silk becomes expensive. This is exactly the meaning of the previous passage, "Grain grows from jujube trees" and "Millet grows from elm trees." Grain and plants share the same vital energy; when plants are harmed, the corresponding grain becomes scarce and expensive. On the first day of the first lunar month, if the wind comes from the east, early planted rice grows well; if the wind comes from the south, early planted millet grows well; if the wind comes from the north, late planted millet grows well. On the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, if the wind comes from the east, early planted beans grow well; if the wind comes from the west, and blows between the fourth and seventh days, the middle-planted beans grow well; if the wind blows between the seventh and tenth days, the late-planted millet grows well; if there is still no wind by the fourteenth day, it is not suitable to plant beans. Starting from the winter solstice, within the next sixty days, if there is a strong wind or heavy rain that breaks trees, wheat will have a good harvest. If the wind blows from the time of dawn until breakfast time, early planted wheat grows well; if it blows until noon, mid-planted wheat grows well; if it blows until sunset, late-planted wheat grows well. As for the time to plant seeds, it is usually suitable to plant them ninety days after the summer solstice.

On the first day of the fourth lunar month, the wind blew from the east: from dawn until the morning hour (7 to 9 a.m.), the early planted millet had a good harvest; until noon, the mid-planted millet had a good harvest; until sunset, the late planted millet had a good harvest. On the first day of the first lunar month, the sky was clear and bright, indicating a smooth silkworm-rearing season. The book "Jing Fang's Divination" says: "On the first day of the first lunar month, one should observe the wind. From dawn, if the weather is warm and calm without wind, the early planted crops and early silkworms will be good; if it remains calm at noon, the mid-planted crops and mid-silkworms will be good; if it remains windless until evening, the five grains, mulberry trees, and silkworm-rearing will all flourish, and the people and the six domestic animals (cattle, horses, sheep, chickens, dogs, pigs) will not get sick." The book "Peigong's Divination" says: "On the first day of the first lunar month, if it is warm and windless at dawn, the early silkworms will be good; if it is windless at noon, the mid-silkworms will be good; if it is windless at sunset, the late silkworms will be good; if there is no wind all day, both early and late silkworms will be good." The book "Dongfang Shuo" says: "On the first day of the first lunar month, it should be warming up, but instead there is wind and rain, causing rice prices to rise sharply and silkworm-rearing to suffer damage; if the wind comes from the west, there will be military troubles in the following year, leading to high prices for weapons and armor."

Jing Fang said: "In the year when the Tai Su (the celestial deity representing the year) is in the position of Yin, there are thirty days in the year when the yin energy is excessive, silkworms do not produce a good harvest, beans and wheat grow well, and the people consume four sheng of grain per person per day (this type of divination uses 'food several sheng' to indicate the abundance or scarcity of the harvest and the amount of grain consumed). In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Mao, the climate is harmonious throughout the year, beans and wheat grow well, the people consume five sheng of grain per person per day, but there are forty days of drought, which occurs in June. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Chen, there is thirty days of drought throughout the year, and in June there is a strong wind, followed by another sixty days of drought, and many people fall ill during the year, but beans have a good harvest. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Si, there is a small-scale military conflict, wheat has a good harvest, there is forty days of drought, which occurs in June, prices of goods are low, it is not suitable to raise early silkworms, but late silkworms can thrive, and the five grains mature. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Wu, there is a drought lasting five hundred days (the number of days is possibly incorrect, but the drought lasts for a very long time), silkworms have a good harvest, but the five grains do not bear fruit, late silkworms suffer, military conflicts arise, and many livestock and young children die. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Wei, there is a small military conflict in October, beans have a good harvest, wheat has a poor harvest, there is drought, silkworms do not produce a good harvest, but late silkworms do, there is sixty days of drought, which occurs in February. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Shen, silkworms have a good harvest, wheat matures, and the five grains have a good harvest, there is fifty days of drought, many people fall ill, military conflicts arise, early silkworms do not produce a good harvest, but late silkworms do. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of You, there is military conflict, people fall ill, early silkworms do not produce a good harvest, but late silkworms do, livestock suffer, and there is drought in June and July. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Xu, there is military conflict, silkworms do not produce a good harvest, meat is cheap, cattle and horses are expensive, there is drought in mountainous areas, people suffer from famine, and rice costs seventy wen per dou. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Hai, there is military conflict, people suffer from famine, many diseases and worries, lasting forty days, which occurs in the commanderies and states, there is seventy days of drought, beans and wheat grow well, the five grains mature, and silkworm eggs are abundant, like stars in the sky. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Zi, there is an imbalance between drought and rain, the five grains do not mature, there is thirty-three days of drought, which occurs in June, and the price of grain in the western region rises sharply. In the year when the Tai Su is in the position of Chou, there is a military conflict, early silkworms do not produce a good harvest, but late silkworms do, and the people are not at peace."

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says, "When the Tai Su is in the亥 position, it is called 'Sky Void,' and according to the method of divining grain prices, grain prices should be high; when the Tai Su is in the丑 position, it is called 'Yin ends and Yang begins,' and one can buy Yang Valley, which refers to millet; when the Tai Su is in the巳 position, it is called 'Earth Void,' and according to the method of divining grain prices, grain prices should be high; when the Tai Su is in the未 position, it is called 'Yang ends and Yin begins,' and one can buy Yin Valley, which refers to millet. When the Tai Yin (the age god opposite to the Tai Su) reaches the寅 position, there will be drought first and then flood, later drought again, and silkworms, millet, beans, and wheat will flourish, with each person eating four sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the卯 position, millet, rice, beans, wheat, and millet will flourish, with each person eating two sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the辰 position, there will be drought first and then flood, leading to famine, beans will flourish, wheat will mature, and each person will eat two sheng per day; when the Tai Su reaches the巳 position, there will be minor military actions, silkworms and wheat will flourish, with each person eating two sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the午 position, there will be great drought, silkworms will mature, rice, beans, and wheat will flourish, but millet will not bear fruit, with each person eating two sheng per day; when the Tai Su reaches the未 position, there will be minor military actions, silkworms and rice will flourish, but beans and wheat will not bear fruit, with each person eating three sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the酉 position, there will be major military actions, people will suffer from plague, silkworms, beans, and wheat will not bear fruit, and each person will eat seven sheng per day, with great consumption; when the Tai Yin reaches the亥 position, there will be military actions, wheat and millet will grow well, with each person eating five sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the子 position, there will be heavy fog, and this year will have great flooding, with rice, wheat, silkworms, and millet flourishing, and each person eating three sheng per day; when the Tai Yin reaches the丑 position, there will be minor military actions, early silkworms will not be harvested, rice will be diseased, beans will not bear fruit, wheat will flourish, and each person will eat three sheng per day."

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: "If it rains on the first and second day of the first lunar month, each person eats two sheng of food per day; if it rains on the third and fourth day, each person eats four sheng; if it rains on the fifth and sixth day, each person eats six sheng; if it rains on the seventh and eighth day, each person eats one sheng; if it rains on the tenth day, no divination is made." The Divination of Shīkuàng (attributed to Shīkuàng, a Spring and Autumn period musician) says: "On the seventh day of the first lunar month, the wind comes from the northwest, originating in Jingchu, with a weak force. The people will experience disputes and disturbances due to continuous rain, and the prices of livestock and grain will be high; if the wind is too strong, the year will be poor." The Divination of Jingfang says: "On the first day of the first lunar month, the zodiac sign is the rooster; on the second day, the dog; on the third day, the sheep; on the fourth day, the pig; on the fifth day, the ox; on the sixth day, the horse; on the seventh day, the human; on the eighth day, the grain. If a day has favorable weather, no wind and not cold, then the corresponding zodiac sign is auspicious, people will not get sick, and livestock will not die." This is the origin of the ancient custom of celebrating the seventh day of the first lunar month as the "People's Day."

In the Han dynasty, the diviner Xi Meng said: "One should often observe the Well mansion (the first of the seven southern constellations of the Vermilion Bird) at dusk on the first day of the first lunar month. If there is a cloud above the Well mansion, there will be flooding in that year, and one should strive to cultivate mountainous land and higher fields." The "Dongfang Shuo" said: "One should often observe the east at the middle of the night on the first day of the first lunar month. If yellow clouds appear, there will be a great amnesty in spring; if yellow clouds appear in the south, there will be amnesty in summer; if yellow clouds appear in the west, there will be amnesty in autumn; if yellow clouds appear in the north, there will be amnesty in winter; if yellow clouds are mixed with other colors, there will be an amnesty for the crown prince; if black clouds are mixed in, there will certainly be an amnesty concerning the empress or palace women." The "Jing Fang Yi Zhan" said: "On the first day of the first lunar month, if the clouds are of all five colors and bright with spirit, and the qi of the twelve tones corresponding to the solar terms are also complete, the country will be peaceful. If winds and rains come from the northwest, grain prices will be high."

The Shennong text (a book on agricultural divination attributed to the Yellow Emperor Shennong) says: "In the first lunar month, if the Jiazi day occurs, the price of grain will first be high and then fall." The Peigong text says: "In the first lunar month, if the Jiayin day comes first, the price of coffins will be high; if the Bingyin day comes first, the price of silk and cloth will be high; if the RENYIN day comes first, the price of fish and salt will be high; the price increases threefold. On the first day of the first lunar month, if there is a strong wind that tears off roofs, breaks trees, raises dust, and shakes stones, the harvest will be poor for the year. If the wind comes from the east, there will be many diseases among the people; if it comes from the south, there will be a severe drought; if it comes from the west, livestock will die or be injured; if it comes from the north, low-lying fields will have no harvest, while high fields will have a good yield. Usually, starting from the winter solstice, count down to the middle of the first lunar month, if the day of the fifth hour arrives after fifty days, there will be enough grain; if it arrives before fifty days, each day less than fifty will mean one month less of grain, and each day more than fifty will mean one month more of grain."

The Shennong text says: "On the first ten days of the first lunar month, if it is a Xin day and the weather is warm, it is auspicious; if it is windy and cold, it is not good." The Huangdi Zhan text says: "Usually observe the moon at night during the first and eighth lunar months: if the moon is east of the Hairy Head mansion, there will be great joy in the year; if it is west of the Hairy Head mansion, there will be much rain; if it is north of the Hairy Head mansion, the year will be extremely bad; if it is south of the Hairy Head mansion, there will be a great drought." The Jingfang text says: "If during the first and eighth lunar months the moon is east of the Three Stars mansion, it is very auspicious; if it is west of the Three Stars mansion, there will be many aquatic pests; if it is north of the Three Stars mansion, it is very inauspicious." The Huangdi Zhan text says: "In spring, rain on a Yimao day is not desired; in summer, rain on a Dingmao day is not desired; in autumn, rain on a Xinmao day is not desired; in winter, rain on a Guimao day is not desired; if it rains on these four Maos days, the people will suffer from many diseases."

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: "Always on the first day of the first lunar month, observe from midnight until dawn. Look to the north: if black clouds appear, there will be a flood of four zhang and seven chi in the seventh month; if green clouds appear, there will certainly be an epidemic, which will occur in Yan and Zhao regions; if red and yellow clouds appear, the people will suffer from great famine and the country will have many criminal cases; if white clouds appear, there will be a calamity involving mourning in white clothes; if red clouds appear, the country will have joy, mothers and sons will be honored together, and women will flourish. Look to the south: if red clouds appear, there will be a great drought, with thousands of miles of dry land, the fifth month will be extremely hot and dry, the sixth month will have storms and heavy rains, which will destroy houses and break trees; if white clouds appear, the country will have a great mourning, the emperor will lose his position; if black clouds appear, there will be a great flood, which will occur within this year's fifth month; if green clouds appear, it is a great auspicious omen, and the women in the palace will achieve their plans. Look to the west: if white clouds appear, there will be military affairs in autumn, the ministers will flee from the court, the bells in the palace will no longer ring, and swords, spears, and halberds will clash; if green clouds appear, it is a great calamity, the ruler will attack his ministers, and the ministers will die, and the object of the omen will be displayed in the market, occurring within this year's ninth month; if black clouds appear, it is a great auspicious omen, and it will be favorable."

On a Jiashen day in autumn, there is heavy rain, leading to the death of many livestock; on a Jiashen day in winter, people fall ill. If there is wind and rain on the last day of September and the first day of October, the year will be bad with minor floods; if there is wind and rain on the last day of October and the first day of November, many people will die. If on the first and second days of April there is a You day, the people will be greatly joyful; if on the third and fourth days of April there is a You day, the people will be content; if on the fifth and sixth days of April there is a You day, many people will fall ill; if on the seventh and eighth days of April there is a You day, many people will be ill; if on the ninth and tenth days of April there is a You day, many people will scatter to other places; if on the eleventh and twelfth days of April there is a You day, people will turn on each other, which is a great calamity. This passage uses the intersection of the heavenly stem and earthly branch days with the end of the month and the beginning of the next month to predict the year's conditions. Jiashen belongs to the Metal element in the Five Phases, and in autumn and winter, Metal and Water are already dominant. If there is rain, it leads to excessive cold and dampness. When wind and rain occur at the transition between the end of the month and the beginning of the next, it indicates that the seasonal order is disrupted, so all such occurrences are considered ominous.

Jing Fang said: "On the first day of the fifth month, it should be hot, but instead there is wind and rain, grain is expensive, and people eat grass and trees to survive. The wind comes from the north, and the crops suffer great defeat, with people eating each other." The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: "On the fifth day after the beginning of summer, when the rainbow first appears, all things will bear fruit. On the first and second day after the winter solstice, if the day is You, the harvest will be only half; on the third and fourth day, if the day is You, the people will be greatly joyful; on the fifth and sixth day, if the day is You, the crops in the fields will be abundant; on the seventh and eighth day, if the day is You, the year will be very bad; on the ninth day, if the day is You, the prices of the five grains will rise sharply; on the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth day, if the day is You, the five grains will have a great harvest, but domestic animals will suffer; on the thirteenth day, if the day is You, the people will fight each other, there will be great misfortune, and there will be chaos in all directions. You belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases, and metal is the basis of weapons and the primary deity of harvest."

Jing Fang said: "The first day after the winter solstice encountering a Ren day indicates no rain the following year; the second day encountering a Ren day means late planted crops can still grow again; the third and fourth days encountering a Ren day means both high and low fields can mature; the fifth and sixth days encountering a Ren day means ditches overflow and crops are easy to manage; the seventh and eighth days encountering a Ren day means great floods flow across; the ninth and tenth days encountering a Ren day means water is so strong that even walls cannot stand; if it is more than ten days before encountering a Ren day, the water level will decrease; if on the third and seventh days after the winter solstice a Ren day occurs, crops will be difficult to manage." Ren, being the water element among the ten heavenly stems, is used to predict the size of the water level in the following year based on its occurrence.

The water wheel is governed by the vital energy of the day of Renyin: when the Buzhou wind (northwest wind) rises, salt and fermented beans decrease in price, while sea products increase; when the Guangmo wind (north wind) blows, chickens and dogs decrease in price, while carp increase; when the Tiaofeng wind (northeast wind) rises, pigs and young pigs decrease in price, while fresh fish increase; when the Mingshu wind (east wind) rises, oxen and horses decrease in price, while lambs increase; when the Qingming wind (southeast wind) rises, sea fish decrease in price, while salt and fermented beans increase; when the Jingfeng wind (south wind) rises, carp decrease in price, while chickens and dogs increase; when the Liangfeng wind (southwest wind) rises, fresh fish decrease in price, while pigs and young pigs increase; when the Changhe wind (west wind) blows, lambs decrease in price, while oxen and horses increase. In all these five days of Yin, the things belonging to the direction from which the wind comes become cheaper, and the things belonging to the direction directly affected by the wind become more expensive. The time of day when the wind arises also matters: if the wind blows all day starting from sunrise, the price increase should occur within sixty days; if the wind blows from sunset to midnight, the price increase should occur within twenty days; if the wind blows from midnight to dawn, the price increase should occur within one hour.

On Gengyin day, observe the Five Carriage Stars: if the star of the Golden Carriage moves, there will be losses, and items such as gold, silver, and iron will rise in price; if the star moves but its light is dim, this is also a sign of rising prices; if there is a strong wind and severe cold, breaking trees and overturning roofs, then prices will rise sharply; a greater wind and cold will cause a larger rise, a lesser wind and cold will cause a smaller rise, while mild weather will lead to a drop in prices, and if there is no wind and no cold, prices will remain the same. On Renyin day, observe the Five Carriage Stars: the Water Star governs boats, livestock, and fish and turtles that move on their own in water, so if the Water Carriage Star moves and has a dark color, aquatic products will rise in price; if there is a strong wind and severe cold, breaking trees and overturning roofs, prices will rise sharply; a greater wind and cold will cause a larger rise, a lesser wind and cold will cause a smaller rise, while mild weather will lead to a drop in prices, and if there is no wind and no cold, prices will remain the same.

On the day of Jiayin, observe the Five Car Stars: the planet Jupiter governs timber, saplings, reeds, and straw. If the star of wood appears unstable and has a slightly blue hue, these items will rise in price. If there is wind and cold, breaking trees and overturning roofs, then a strong wind and cold will cause a large increase, a weak wind and cold will cause a small increase, and if the weather is mild, prices will fall. If there is no wind and no cold, prices will remain the same. On the day of Bingyin, observe the Five Car Stars: the planet Mars governs silkworms, silk, cloth, and leather. The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume 112

Divination using bamboo, wood, herbs, and medicinal plants.

Grass and trees show favorable signs.

Chu Cao (Red Grass)

The Sun氏's "Ruiying Tu" (a book specifically recording auspicious omens and responses) says: "The red grass is the essence of all herbs. When a sage's virtue reaches everywhere, it grows." The "He Guan Zi" says: "Only a sage can regulate the pitch and harmonize the sounds, so his virtue reaches up to the Heavenly Clearness, down to the Earthly Tranquility, and pervades all the spirits of creatures, thus the red grass grows." The "Shangshu Da Zhuan" (a book from the Han dynasty explaining the "Book of Documents" by Fu Sheng's school) says: "When virtue and education are practiced above, and the ways of the earth are orderly below, the red grass grows." The "Huainanzi" says: "In the era of Heavenly Clearness, which is pure and simple, the flow-yellow jade appears, and the red grass also grows." The "Chunqiu Yun Dou Shu" (a Han dynasty book on celestial phenomena and omens) says: "When the second star of the Big Dipper, Tianxuan, moves in its regular course, the red grass grows." The "Shangshu Hou" says: "When cultural virtue and commands are established, and virtuous and capable people hold official positions, the red grass grows in the outskirts." The "Wei Lie" says: "When Wei Wen Di Cao Pi was about to accept the heavenly mandate from the Han dynasty, the red grass grew beside the Wen Chang Hall." The "Da Dai Li" says: "When the red grass grows, it grows one leaf per day until the fifteenth day; starting from the sixteenth day, it loses one leaf per day." This associates the flourishing and withering of the red grass with the waxing and waning of the moon, showing it as an omen responding to heaven.

Jiahe

The "Chunqiu Gan Jingfu" (one of the Spring and Autumn Annals' commentaries from the Han dynasty, discussing the感应 between human affairs and celestial phenomena) says: "When the virtue of the sovereign permeates the land, good grain will grow." The "Chunqiu Yun Dou Shu" says: "When the second star of the Big Dipper, Tianxuan, moves in its proper course, the good grain will be plump and well-nourished." The so-called good grain refers to a single stalk of millet bearing multiple ears. Ancient people regarded it as a auspicious sign of a bountiful harvest brought about by the highest virtue.

Fucao (Fúcǎo)

The Li Dou Wei Yi (a Han dynasty ritual text that associates the Big Dipper with the majesty of the ruler) says: "When a ruler inherits the virtue of wood and reigns, the grass of good omen will grow in the ancestral temple." The Ru Ying Tu says: "The so-called grass of good omen is a auspicious plant that grows in the ancestral temple when the ruler performs worship with solemnity and restraint." Ancient people associated the five phases with the dynasties; "reigning through wood" means receiving the mandate with the virtue of wood. Wood represents the sprouting of spring, so its manifestation appears in auspicious signs related to grass and trees.
