A fiery light will rise from the ground, and a "Qiu" aura will appear beside the sun. The sun will also display "reverse light," causing the earth to shine at the same time. The "Qiu" aura will rise upward, corresponding with the reverse light, and the sun's shadow will appear to the south. There is another situation: the upper light is too strong, making the sun's disk invisible. But when the reverse light appears, the sun's true form will reappear at noon. When the sunlight weakens and is about to disappear, it suddenly becomes briefly bright, like an oil lamp about to go out, suddenly flaring up with a bright flame. Since ancient times, when a nation is about to perish, a tyrannical ruler will surely arise. Such a ruler will certainly indulge his desires, reaching the peak of arrogance and pride. The divine observation will then descend, so heaven uses the phenomenon of "reverse light" as a deep warning to him.

The astronomer Shi Shen of the Warring States period said: the "straight" light appearing beside the sun is a column of red light, more than ten feet long, standing upright beside the sun and moon, hence named "straight." The area corresponding to this light will have someone who will self-proclaim as king or marquis. The diviner Xia said: "straight" refers to the meaning of "upright and just," appearing above, below, left, or right of the sun, indicating a loyal minister establishing his own domain. If the "straight" light appears below the sun and has a bright, moist appearance, someone will be appointed as a marquis or king. Xia also said that a bright and outstanding "straight" light beside the sun indicates the monarch appointing officials; a "straight" light of blue and red color indicates officials establishing their own authority. Xia's "Sun Halo Diagram" said that a "straight" light beside the sun, yellow-white and moist, indicates someone will be appointed as a marquis or king. The "Luo Writing" said: if there is one "straight" light on one side, one region will self-proclaim as a marquis or king; if there are two, two regions will self-proclaim; if there are three, three regions will self-proclaim; if there are four, four regions will self-proclaim as marquises or kings. The "Xiao Jing Nei Ji" said: if there is one "straight" light beside the sun, blocking one side, that region will desire to self-proclaim; when two armies fight, the side attacking in the direction of the "straight" light will win.
The Xiaoshijing Neiji says: When there are two 'straight' qi lines on either side of the Sun, which are bright and lustrous in color, a prince or king will be appointed. The Xia Shi's "Riyun Tu" says: When there are two 'straight' lines on either side of the Sun, it indicates that someone wishes to establish himself as ruler; if these lines are red on the inside and blue on the outside, then the attempt to establish oneself will fail. The "Ri Bang Qi Tu" attributed to Yin Gaozong says: When there are two 'straight' qi lines standing side by side on either side of the Sun, it indicates that the ministers close to the ruler are plotting to establish themselves. The Luo Shu says: When there are 'straight' qi lines on all four sides of the Sun, it is called "Si Qiang" (Four Strengths); if these lines are yellow and white and lustrous, the Son of Heaven will have joyous events, the country will be peaceful without military conflicts, the state will have abundant resources, and favored ministers will be sent on missions and granted titles of kingship. If these lines appear blue, the Son of Heaven will have worries; if they appear red, there will be military disasters; if they appear white, many common people will die; if they appear black, the ruler will die and the territory will be divided.

Han dynasty astrologers who observed atmospheric phenomena, such as Wang Shuo, said that the "sun" has a "junction" or "intersection" of qi. The term "junction" refers to a bluish-red color, resembling a halo around the sun, which sometimes appears as two "back" qi converging together, or as a straight vertical shape. The "junction" is further divided into "correct junction" and "biased junction," both of which are instances where two streams of qi intersect with each other. These intersections may either pass through each other or cross against each other, indicating internal disturbances in the country, while the military remains unaware. Shi Shen said that seeing a "junction" near the sun indicates that people on earth have been influenced by chaotic and rebellious qi. Jing Fang of the Han dynasty said that a "biased junction" near the sun indicates a side attack, while a "correct junction" attached to the sun indicates a direct confrontation; when two armies face each other, the side that attacks in the direction indicated by the "junction" qi will win. Gan De said that usually on the first ten days of the ninth lunar month, on clear days, one should observe the sky. If there are red clouds crossing near the sun, the area below the clouds will experience military conflict.
The sun is mentioned.
The Xia family's "Diagram of the Solar Halo" says: When there is a red cloud beside the sun, curving like the canopy of a carriage and reflecting toward the sun, it is called "Futi"; within this year, there will be someone who establishes himself as a king. To determine where this will occur, one should look at the star mansion corresponding to the position of the sun at that time. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When there is white cloud beside the sun, curving toward the sun, with one part to the east and one to the west, it is called "Ti"; within this year, there will be someone who establishes himself as a king. The "Xiaojing Neiji" says: When there is a red cloud beside the sun, shaped like a chariot wheel, either two or four pieces — according to the original diagram, it is drawn as two clouds, either facing away from or toward the sun, and the shape should resemble a canopy, not a chariot wheel, "chariot wheel" being a mistake in transmission. If these clouds face outward to form "Ti", it indicates that a minister outside the court will betray his sovereign; the occurrence of two "Ti" indicates an event within thirty days; the occurrence of four "Ti" indicates an event within sixty days.
The Xiao Jing Nei Ji says: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige is surrounded by red clouds shaped like a chariot wheel, with four curved parts facing the sun, it is called "bing ti" (military banner). This omen indicates that within this year, someone will proclaim himself king, and the country where this occurs should be determined by the star mansion corresponding to the position of the sun. Gan De says: When the sun is surrounded by red clouds on all four sides, curving towards the sun, it is called "si ti" (four banners). The Jingzhou Zhuan says: "Ti" resembles the two ears of a person attached to the sun; seeing this omen indicates that within this year, warfare will break out, the king will die, or a country will be lost and someone will proclaim himself king. The Xiao Jing Nei Ji also says: When the sun has four "ti" around it, within two years there will be a large-scale military conflict, generals will flee, grain prices will double, the time of occurrence is thirty days, and there will be continuous heavy rain. Jing Fang says: When "si ti" appears, within two years there will be a great war and a severe famine. A saying attributed to Yin Gaozong says: When the sun has six "ti," the sovereign will bear this calamity and should prepare in advance. Jing Fang also says: When the sun has six "ti," the Son of Heaven will perish, silk and cloth will become very expensive, and chaos will spread throughout the land, with the time of occurrence being fifty days.
Han Confucian scholar Dong Zhongshu said that during the Shang dynasty, there was a cloud that remained near the Sun, bending towards it, called "Ri Ti" (Sun's Lift). The divination text of that time said: "Within six years, the Son of Heaven will have misfortune, and certainly someone else will be established as king." King Wu Ding of the Shang dynasty became alert due to this celestial phenomenon, diligently cultivated virtue and governance, and thus the Shang dynasty's rule flourished for hundreds of years. It can be said that the calamity was resolved and blessings followed.
Day Pattern
Gan De said: If there is a green aura stretching across above or below the Sun, this is called "Ge"; "Ge" symbolizes combat and struggle, indicating that there will be disputes and warfare among people.
The sun steps on the knot of the sash and the ribbon.
The Luo Writing says: Below the Star of brightness and prestige there are three kinds of qi, red, black, and blue, which is called the "steps" qi; when it converges beneath the sun and hangs down like a coronal tassel, it is also called the "loop." Seeing this image indicates that the sovereign will have joy and celebration, while at the same time a minister from abroad will return and rebel. The reason for this interpretation is that the Star of brightness and prestige symbolizes the sovereign. Black is the essence of water, and the red qi presses upon it above, indicating a struggle between water and fire. Fire overcoming water signifies the manifestation of Yang Virtue, hence the sovereign's joy. Water tends to descend, indicating danger and collapse, hence the minister from abroad will rebel.
The sun follows.
Xia Shi said: The term "cheng" refers to a shape resembling half a halo of light appearing beneath the sun, which is called "cheng." The term "cheng" signifies the meaning of a subject serving the sovereign, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between sovereign and subject, and is a favorable celestial phenomenon. The "Diagram of the Solar Halo" attributed to Yin Gaozong states that when there is a yellowish aura beneath the sun, layered three times and surrounding it like a "hug," it is called "chengfu." Seeing this phenomenon indicates that the sovereign will experience auspicious joy and gain the favor of the land.

The Hongfan Transmission says: The Sun has a "gao" aura surrounding it, and a "er" aura resembling earlobes, with overlapping brilliance, which is a sign of auspiciousness; the ruler will receive celebration, and both happiness and official rank will be bestowed. Xia said: The Sun has a "guan" aura and also a "er" aura, indicating the ruler has joy and will appoint someone, and this will happen within the same year. The Luo Writing says: In the morning when the Sun first rises, there is a "guan" aura above it and "er" auras on both sides, with yellow and white colors that are moist and lustrous, indicating the Son of Heaven has joy and will accept advice and appoint a prince; if these auras appear green, it signifies worry; white, signifies mourning; black, signifies death. This is so interpreted: from dawn to breakfast time, this period belongs to the ruler's position, and the two "er" auras symbolize the ruler receiving input, while the presence of yellow and white colors together indicates an appointment of a prince. Wang Shuo said: When the Sun has a "guan" aura, there should also be two "er" auras to match, which is a great auspicious sign. Wei said: When the Sun has a "guan" aura and only has an "er" aura on the right, there will be a virtuous person emerging in the eastern part of the country and receiving an official position. The Xiaojing Cixiong Tu says: When the Sun has a "guan" aura and only has an "er" aura on the left, it indicates the ruler has an improper intimacy with the mother of his wife.
The Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety says: The Sun has a 'ear' on its left and a 'crown' above it, indicating the monarch has private relations with women in the eastern palace. Shi Shen says: The Sun has a 'crown' aura and a 'ear' on its right, meaning there is a virtuous person in the southern border who wishes to attain power. The Wei version of the Luo Writing says: The Sun has 'ears' on both sides, and a 'straight' aura emerges from the 'ears', red inside and blue outside, overall yellow and white with a moist and lustrous appearance, indicating the emperor will obtain jewels and there will be joyous events of enfeoffing princes and marquises. This is interpreted as follows: The Sun symbolizes the emperor, jewels are the most beautiful things among the yin category; the 'straight' aura signifies ministers who assist the ruler; the yellow and white moist and lustrous colors are auspicious, thus indicating the emperor will have joy from obtaining treasures and the presence of the 'straight' aura will lead to the establishment of marquisates. If these auras are blue, it indicates worry; red, warfare; white, mourning; black, associated with water, indicating floods. The Diagram of the Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety says: When the Sun rises with a 'ear' and a 'cap' aura, the prince will issue virtuous decrees. Another interpretation says that on the day there will be a joyful event to celebrate. The Diagram of the Male and Female of the Classic of Filial Piety says: The Sun has four 'ears' around it, and on the left and right sides of the outer part of the 'ears' there are each a 'embrace' aura, indicating prosperity of descendants.
Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian: The Book of Celestial Officials" says that the Sun has "embrace" and "wear" energies, which indicate joy and celebration. The "Xiaojing Yunshenqi" says that when a ruler's virtue moves heaven, the Sun will display "embrace" and "wear" energies. Jing Fang says that the Sun has one "embrace" and one "back" energy, which indicates the enemy's defeat and retreat; "embrace" is the energy of favorable encirclement, while "back" is the energy of separation; when two armies face each other, the side with the "embrace" energy can attack the side with the "back" energy and win, so it is said to result in "defeat and retreat." The "Luo Writing" says that when the Sun has "embrace" energy and a single "ear" (a type of celestial phenomenon), if the color is white and moist, with inner red and outer blue, and appears between early morning and breakfast time, the Son of Heaven will have joy; if it appears between noon and sunset, with pale and moist color, it indicates someone coming from afar, though the news may be good, it should not be trusted. A claim attributed to Yin Gaozong says that when the Sun has "embrace" energy and two "ears," with yellow energy below shaped like a crescent moon, called "left virtue," the presence of this yellow energy indicates the prince's joy, while its absence indicates the Son of Heaven's joy. It also says that when the Sun has two layers of "embrace" energy on both sides, the ruler will have joy.
A diagram called "The Sun's Side Atmosphere" attributed to Yin Gaozong says: The Sun has overlapping "embrace" clouds and two "ear" clouds, indicating joy and celebration for the ruler. Xia said: The Sun has a double "embrace," with a "jue" cloud shaped like a gap inside the "embrace." When two armies are facing each other, the side attacking along the direction of the "embrace" will win, and there will be people in the enemy army who wish to rebel. It also says: If there is a double "embrace" and a "back" cloud, the side attacking along the direction of the "embrace" will win, and they will be able to take land, and the enemy army will disband. The Luo Writing says: The Sun has three layers of "embrace" clouds overlapping, with two "ear" clouds neatly arranged on both sides, all yellow and white and bright. The Son of Heaven has joy and celebration, which is called "great harmony." The "embrace" symbolizes closeness and harmony; the "ear" being upright symbolizes military affairs. The "Chunqiu Hunfu" says: If the ruler only decorates his reputation without sincerity, if what he says does not match what he thinks, if he goes against his conscience, is arrogant and unrestrained, does not promote loyal ministers, does not honor filial piety, and damages the virtue that should be increased, then the Sun will show "back" clouds and "jue" clouds, which are dark and bluish-red. The Luo Writing says: If the Sun has "back" clouds with the cloud opening facing inward, and the "jue" clouds are black inside, black belongs to water, which indicates rebellion by ministers, so the Son of Heaven has worries.
Building upon the theory of the Luo Writing: this kind of qi appears red on the outside and black inside, hence it is said that water and fire are in conflict, and rebellious ministers rise up in rebellion from within the court, the Son of Heaven is about to die. Jing Fang said: when the 'back' qi and 'juan' qi appear on the south side of the Sun and the other three sides, the country corresponding to that area will have rebellious ministers. The Yi Wei says: when the Sun has 'back' qi and 'juan' qi, it indicates that petty men will encroach upon land and great men will compete for the right moment. Jing Fang also said: when both the Sun and the Moon have 'juan' qi, the country will have people plotting rebellion. The Luo Zui Ji says: when the Sun has 'back' and 'juan' qi, it signifies internal discord and wrongdoing that has not yet been spoken of. The Zhai Wang Pi says: when 'back' qi and 'juan' qi appear together, they are inverted and confused, interwoven and twisted, the Son of Heaven will be destroyed, and ministers will incite chaos. The Chun Qiu Wei says: during the time of King Jie of Xia, the queen's clan seized power, 'back' qi and 'juan' qi pierced the Sun directly, hanging down bright light, and when such heavenly phenomena occur, it is a premonition of the country's downfall. The Chun Qiu Gan Jing Fu says: when there is discord and disorder between the ruler and ministers, the Sun will display 'back' qi and 'juan' qi.
The "Diagram of the Atmosphere Around the Sun" attributed to Yin Gaozong says: The Sun has a "straight" aura beside it, and above it there is a red aura arranged like fish scales, indicating that the attendants wish to establish themselves independently. The same book also says: The Sun has two "back" auras and one "straight" aura, indicating that the ministers plot to establish themselves. Gan De says: The Sun has "jue" auras on all four sides, which is called "great labor," indicating a large-scale conscription and labor, and there are rebels among the troops outside. The "Inner Record of the Filial Classic" says: The Sun has four "back" auras and "jue" auras; if there are no troops outside at that time, one will see armies rising across the country; if there are already troops outside, then the military affairs of the whole country will cease. The "Spring and Autumn Records of Sensible Spirits" says: The Sun has four "back" auras and "jue" auras, indicating that ministers will harm the sovereign. The "Inner Record of the Filial Classic" also says: The Sun has four "back" auras and "jue" auras, and there are four round auras shaped like large chariots following, indicating that the sovereign will not be at peace, and a great calamity of a major state will arrive within a year; if the chariot-shaped auras penetrate the two "back" auras, there will be a rebellious minister, and heavy rain will fall within three months.
The Spring and Autumn Writings say: The Sun has four paths of 'back' qi and 'jue' qi, which indicate internal turmoil in a country's territory, the outbreak of military conflicts, or betrayal by people. Wei said: The Sun has two straight qi lines and three layers of 'bao' qi, indicating someone who wants to establish themselves but fails; when two armies face each other, the side attacking in the direction of the 'bao' qi will win and be able to kill the enemy general. Wei also said: The Sun has 'ying' qi and a 'er' on the left, indicating that someone in the harem has gone beyond their proper position, which brings joy. The Xiao Jing Ci Xiong Tu says: The Sun has 'guan' qi and 'nou' qi with a 'er' on the left, indicating the ruler has an improper relationship with his mother-in-law. The same book also says: The Sun has 'guan' and 'nou' with 'er's on both sides, indicating the world has good fortune and joy, and the five kinds of rebellious matters are eliminated. The Sun Yun Tu says: The Sun has 'guan' and 'ying' with a white 'wan' qi on the left, indicating joy in the harem. The same book also says: The Sun has 'guan' and 'ying' with a 'er' on the right, indicating someone in the harem has gone beyond their proper position, also bringing joy. It also says: Above the Sun's halo there are 'guan' and 'ying', with 'wan' qi on both sides, indicating great joy throughout the world and the removal of punishments.
The "Diagram of the Male and Female Versions of the Classic of Filial Piety" says: The Sun has a "nou" aura and a "er" on its left, indicating private communication between brothers. The "Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety" says: The Sun has a "guan" aura and a "nou" aura, indicating the monarch's love for a maid wearing blue clothes, wanting to make her his official wife, and she is already in the palace. Gan De says: If the Sun has a "dai" aura and a "er" aura, the Son of Heaven will have a joyful event; if there is a "bao" aura, it indicates a marriage alliance, and the more "bao" auras there are, the more people will be allied; if both "bao" and "er" auras appear together, several states will submit at the same time, and all families will be happy and harmonious. Gan De also says: If the Sun has a "dai" aura and a "er" aura, the Son of Heaven will have offspring, and the flourishing period will not be beyond this year. Xia's school says: If the Sun has a "dai" aura and a "er" aura, it indicates the ruler has good virtue. Xia's school also says: If the Sun has a double "bao" aura, with "qiu" auras both inside and outside the "bao" aura and also with a "er" aura, the side attacking in the direction of the "bao" aura will win, breaking the enemy's army, and the enemy's internal forces will be discordant and suspicious of each other. The "Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety" says: If there is a double "bao" aura beside the Sun, and on one side there is another "bao" aura, with a "bei" aura and a "dai" aura behind the "bao" aura, the side fighting in the direction of the "bao" aura will win.
The "Diagram of the Atmosphere Around the Sun" attributed to Yin Gaozong says: The Sun has one "embrace" (bao), one "straight" (zhi), and one "ear" (er) ray. When the sovereign has joy and celebration, he will appoint someone. Lü says: "Back" (bei) and "Jue" (qiu) rays, along with four "straight" rays, intertwine in the middle, indicating ministers who wish to commit wrongdoing; if the color is inner blue and outer red with芒刺 (spikes), it signifies open rebellion; if the color is inner red and outer blue without spikes, it signifies secret plots; if such celestial phenomena occur repeatedly, the state will face danger. Rays that curve toward the Sun are called "embrace," while those that move away from the Sun are called "back." If both "back" and "embrace" rays appear, it indicates someone deliberately causing trouble. At this time, the side that remains upright will overcome the rebellious side, the bright will overcome the dark, and the enduring will overcome the brief. If there is also a white rainbow, the side attacking in the direction of the "embrace" ray will win; if the spikes point outward, the people within the city will win; if the spikes point inward, the people outside the city will win—these are all rules for deduction based on the category of the celestial phenomena.
The "Diagram of the Male and Female Classics of Filial Piety" says: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige is present, there are three layers of "coronal" energy above it, and a rainbow below it, hanging straight down, about ten feet long. Within one year, someone will be appointed to a position of honor. The previous nobleman will lose his descendants, and that year the harvest will be slightly poor, while prices will be slightly low. That year there will be military conflict, and the country will not be at peace for the whole year. Xia said: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige has "embracing" energy, and two "ear-like" energies and one rainbow pass through the "embracing" energy and the sun's body, the side attacking in the direction of the rainbow will win and be able to kill the enemy's general. Xia also said: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige has "embracing" energy, two "ear-like" energies, and also has "jade-like" energy, and two rainbows pass through the "embracing" energy and the sun's body, the side attacking in the direction of the rainbow will win and capture two enemy generals, and the enemy generals will also become divided. Xia also said: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige has double "embracing" energy, and three white rainbows pass through the "embracing" energy and the sun's body, the side attacking in the direction of the rainbow will defeat the enemy's main general; two rainbows will kill the chief general, and one rainbow will kill the deputy general. Wei said: When the Star of Brightness and Prestige has double "embracing" energy, and white "ribbon-like" energies on both sides, along with white and red rainbows passing through the "embracing" energy, the side attacking in the direction of the rainbow will win and capture two enemy generals; if there are three rainbows, three enemy generals can be captured.
The forged work attributed to Yin Gaozong, the "Diagram of the Atmosphere Around the Sun," states that the Sun has one "back" and one "straight" line, along with red clouds curling like scrolls, indicating that a close attendant wishes to establish himself independently. If there are two "backs" and one "straight" line, it signifies that a high minister desires to take power for himself. The "Diagram of the Filial Piety and the Dual Principle" says that the Sun has a "pricking" aura and a "crown" aura that overlap and appear together at the edge of the Sun's disc, which is an omen of chaos such as a minister killing his sovereign or a son killing his father. This must be carefully examined. If this omen appears in the east, it indicates harm between father and son; if in the south, it signifies conflict between sovereign and minister; if in the west, it means relatives and soldiers will rebel. If the chaos affects the sovereign, the color is red; if it affects the ministers, the color is blue; if it affects the border regions and barbarians, the color is black; if it is a great thief sent by heaven, the colors will be mixed and confused.

Divination by the Day: Four Methods
Solar Halo
Shi Shen said: The Sun is surrounded by a circular cloud-like appearance, red inside and blue outside, called "Jing." Xia Shi said: "Yun" is the same as "Yun," meaning the concept of circular movement. Han dynasty scholar Zhen Chun explained "Yun" as the movement of the Sun's energy. There are also interpretations of "Yun" as "Zun" (accumulation) and "Wei" (encirclement). Another interpretation says that "Yun" refers to the guards around a military camp, symbolizing the protection of the sovereign. Cai Boye (Cai Yong) said that when the aura appears around the Sun, it is called "Yun." Yang Xiong's "Fangyan" said that a solar "Yun" is called "Chan," which means to move along a path. The "Eya" said that when clouds cover the Sun, it is called "Bingyun," and Guo Pu's commentary said that it refers to the five-colored "Yun" covering the Sun. Liu Xi's "Shiming" said that "Yun" is the same as "Juan," meaning that the aura curls and twists around the Sun. The "Chunqiu Ganjingfu" said that whenever there is an improper affair of yang in the human world, the Sun will produce a "Yun."
Shi Shen said: A solar halo is a symbol of military camps; if the halo surrounds the sun completely and is evenly thick throughout, it indicates that the strength of the enemy and ourselves are equal. If there are no armies outside at that time, it means the Son of Heaven has lost his authority to govern, and the people are likely to rebel. Ban Gu's "Book of Han: Records of Astronomy" says: When two armies face each other and a solar halo appears, it is a sign that both sides are equally strong. Gan De said: When both the sun and the moon produce halos, the two armies may be facing each other but not fight, or they may simply cease hostilities. The "Luo Book" says: If a halo appears when the sun is just rising, there will certainly be someone replacing the king, or there will be an army defeated. Shi Shen said: If a halo appears on a Gengzi day, there will be an imperial pardon issued. The "Yellow River Chart: Emperor's Enjoyment of Delight" says: If a solar halo appears in the first lunar month, military affairs will start in spring, but the side that mobilizes the army will not win. The same book also says: If the sun produces a halo more than nine layers in the first or fifth lunar month, the roads will be oppressively hot, and the general will die; another version says many people will die.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the Sun appears with a halo in the morning and evening, this is called "losing the land," and the defending side will certainly suffer defeat. The same text also states: If the Sun has three layers of halo, the army will be divided into three parts. Xia氏 cites the *Diagram of Solar Halo* saying: If the solar halo is yellow and moist, or black and turbid, and fluctuates, it indicates wind and rain, and the situation is unfavorable; if the halo remains steady and unmoving, it signifies sorrow and illness, otherwise there will be harsh and severe decrees issued. The *Secrets of Tai Gong's Hidden Teachings* says: When the solar halo is clearly layered and distinguishable, if it is red inside and blue outside, the attacking side will win; if it is blue inside and red outside, the defending side will win; if it is yellow inside and blue-black outside, the defending side will win; if it is yellow outside and blue-black inside, the attacking side will win; if it is white outside and blue inside, the attacking side will win; if it is white inside and blue outside, the defending side will win; if it is yellow inside and blue outside, the attacking side will win; if it is blue inside and yellow outside, the defending side will win.
The Tai Gong Yin Mi says: When the sun is surrounded by a halo of yellow-white color, both sides do not fight, but military affairs have not yet been resolved; if the halo is of green-black color, both sides make peace and end the matter by ceding territory; if the halo is yellow, it indicates the commencement of construction and earthworks, causing unrest among the people; if the halo is black, it indicates a flood disaster, with the yin side becoming strong; if the halo is white, it indicates mourning; if the halo is green, it indicates the spread of disease; if the halo is red, it indicates a severe drought, with blood flowing for thousands of li. Jing Fang says: When a solar halo appears and there are armies outside, the defending side cannot win, and it is advantageous for the attacking side. The Tai Gong Bing Fa says: When the solar halo first forms, if it appears first in front and then disappears behind, and after circling it comes together, the later arriving side will win. The same text also says: When the solar halo circles around once and is thicker in the northeast, the thick part brings fortune, and the eastern army fighting in the northeast will gain advantage, while fighting in the southwest will suffer defeat. The Xiaojing Neji says: When the sun is surrounded by a halo and the sun is bright, there will be military conflict in the world; if there is already military conflict, it will cease, and if there is no military conflict, it will start but without actual fighting.
The Luo Writing says: If the sun is surrounded by a bright halo, the ruler has secret plans. Jing Fang says: If the sun's halo resembles the shape of a well rim or a chariot wheel, two states will both suffer defeat and perish. Shi Shen says: If the sun has a blue halo, there will be a great wind within ten days, grain prices will rise tenfold, the people will suffer many diseases, and this is ominous. The Yellow River Chart says: If the sun is surrounded by a red inner halo and a blue outer halo, the ministers will be loyal to the sovereign; if it is red outside and blue inside, the ministers are physically present in court but their hearts are elsewhere. Shi Shen says: If the sun has a black halo, disaster will fall upon the powerful minister in power. A text attributed to Yin Gaozong's "Sun Halo Diagram" says: If the sun is surrounded by a dark bluish-black halo, the female ruler will face calamity. Jing Fang says: If the sun has a single yellow halo, the ruler will experience joy and celebration. The Luo Writing says: If the sun is surrounded by a blue aura, it is called "blue halo," and within twenty days, the weather will become extremely cold.
Continuing from the "Luo Writing" regarding the blue halo: rice prices rise sharply, and outside the capital, each dou costs three coins more; if this occurs five times within a year, rice prices increase fivefold; if it occurs six times, the increase exceeds sixfold; within a year, people eat each other, diseases spread, and epidemics break out in the countries corresponding to the areas indicated by the blue halo. The "Rites of Celestial Authority" states: when a ruler inherits the water virtue and reigns, if government affairs are clear and just, the sun will appear with a yellow center and a blue halo around it. The "Luo Writing" says: when the sun is surrounded by black clouds, within sixty days there will be great floods destroying grain and damaging houses, and in the countries corresponding to the areas indicated by this phenomenon, rice prices will rise tenfold, stopping only after thirty days; if this occurs ten times within a year, there will be conscription and labor service throughout the four seas, poor people will be unable to stay in their native lands, and the dead will be left unburied. The "Rites of Celestial Authority" states: when a ruler inherits the water virtue and reigns, if government affairs are clear and just, the sun will appear with a yellow center and a black halo around it.
The "Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety" says: When the Sun is surrounded by white vapor (another version says "white halo"), there will be a sudden large-scale military disaster within ninety days, the price of millet will rise threefold, and there will be frequent storms in that year, snow and frost falling in spring, many people will fall ill and die, wild dogs will become frenzied, and the countries corresponding to the affected areas will suffer especially severely, with their rulers experiencing great unrest. The "Rites of the Celestial Pole and Rituals of Authority" says: When a ruler inherits the virtue of metal and reigns, and governs with fairness and justice, the Sun will appear yellow in the center and surrounded by a white halo. The original commentary notes: Song Jun said, "The 'image' refers to taking the mirror as a model, reflecting a proper and upright appearance." The "Luo Writing" says: When the Sun is surrounded by red vapor, there will certainly be heavy rain, thunder and lightning killing people and animals within the time of a single meal. This phenomenon will not occur everywhere, but only in the place where it is observed; afterwards, there will certainly be extreme heat, with no people on the roads. The so-called "surrounding sign" is caused by the Sun and the planet Jupiter (water star) moving out of harmony, and it will be verified within ten days; if the "surrounding sign" occurs repeatedly, it will be detrimental to the nobleman.
Continuing from the previous text: Throughout the year, there are frequent occurrences of 'surrounding the sun,' up to ten times, causing the king to be unable to rest in peace, ministers being punished for various offenses; within two years, the emperor will perish, and the price of fine cloth will rise; after another year, silkworms will not produce silk, and silk will increase fourfold, causing the common people to suffer from severe cold—this is the warning indicated by this phenomenon. The "Rites of the Celestial Pole and Rituals" states: When the sovereign rules with the virtue of fire, although his affairs are numerous, they are fair, the sun will appear yellow in the center with a red halo around it. The "Xiao Jing Nei Ji" states: The sign of the sun being surrounded by yellow vapor indicates favorable weather, proper rainfall, and successful agricultural management; if this occurs repeatedly within a year, the whole country will be in peace and security, the country corresponding to the area will be auspicious, and the predicted time will not exceed three years.
The Inner Record of the Classic of Filial Piety says: After an eclipse of the sun, if the sunlight disappears and there is no rain but a strong wind arises, it indicates the outbreak of military action; or great construction projects, and the specific location should be determined according to the star mansion corresponding to the position of the sun at that time. The original commentary notes: Whenever an unusual phenomenon appears near the sun or moon—such as 'embrace', 'earring', 'strength', 'belt', 'rainbow', 'sound', 'back', 'jade', 'tassel', 'knot', 'pattern', 'foot'—if a strong wind arises within three days or heavy rain falls within two days, the ominous influence is considered to have been dispelled, and no further divination is needed. Gan De says: After an eclipse of the sun, if there is no rain or wind for seven days, then large-scale military actions will occur. At this time, one should not initiate military action first, for doing so will result in a great defeat; otherwise, a lunar eclipse will occur.
