Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

Shi Shen said: The Tail Mansion consists of nine stars and spans eighteen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was nine degrees. The second star to the east is the reference star, which reaches the meridian first, and is located one hundred thirty-four degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located slightly less than fifteen degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Tail Mansion is associated with fire in spring and summer, and with water in autumn and winter; the original commentary also says it belongs to water. Ten chi north of the Tail Mansion is the central path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes: the territory corresponding to the Tail Mansion is Yan State, which is now northern Hebei. The Tail Mansion is also called 'Hou Zhu,' 'Tian Ce,' 'Tian Gou,' 'Tian Si Kong,' and 'Tian Ji.'

The Tail Mansion is the place of the imperial harem, where the empress and concubines reside. The first star represents the empress; beside the third star is another small star, about an inch apart, called "Shen Gong," which is the inner chamber for resting and leisure, as well as a hall for entertainment and joy. The Tail Mansion is also called "Tian Shu" and "Tian Jiujiu." It symbolizes officials guarding the borders, and is also known as "Tong Liu Gong" and "Wei Shi," and is likened to a ship covering the heavens. The first star represents the principal concubine, the third star represents the lady, and the remaining five stars represent the concubines. These stars are considered auspicious when they are evenly bright and gradually decrease in size, indicating an orderly hierarchy within the harem and many descendants.

The *Shan Jing* of the Twenty-Eight Mansions says: The mountain corresponding to the Tail Mansion, the Tail Mountain, and the mountain corresponding to the Winnowing Basket Mansion, the Winnowing Basket Mountain, are connected to each other, located west of the Nine Capitals Mountain of Yan State. The star spirits of the Tail and Winnowing Basket Mansions reside on these mountains all year round. The Tail Mansion governs water affairs and also governs the relationship between sovereign and minister. If the stars of the Tail Mansion move, it indicates discord between sovereign and minister, and mutual suspicion. The nine stars of the Tail Mansion also symbolize the nine sons of the Son of Heaven. If these stars jump around unpredictably, scatter apart, and fail to remain in their proper positions, it foretells great chaos throughout the land and the breakdown of the relationship between sovereign and minister.

When the star of the Tail Mansion is bright and large, the queen will experience joyful events; if the star is dim and weak, the queen will face troubles and there will be an outbreak of epidemic diseases. If the stars of the Tail Mansion are scattered apart, the queen will lose her power. If the star is bright, the five grains will have a bountiful harvest and the people will not be troubled; if the star is not bright, the five grains will suffer great damage. If the Tail stars leave their original position and form a straight line, the queen will lose her power; if the stars gather closely together, there will be a great flood. Whenever there are matters of discord between the sovereign and his ministers, one should consult the Tail Mansion for divination.

Jixu Qi

Shi Shen said: The Ji Xu mansion consists of four stars and spans eleven degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measurement was ten degrees, and some say eleven and a quarter degrees. The measurement takes the western star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian. It is located one hundred and eighteen degrees south of the northern celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located five degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Ji Xu mansion corresponds to metal in spring and summer, and to earth in autumn and winter. The original commentary notes: some say it belongs to metal. Six chi to the north of the Ji Xu mansion is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory corresponding to the Ji Xu mansion is Yan State, which is now northern Hebei. The Ji Xu star is also called the Wind Star. When the moon enters the Ji Xu mansion, a great wind will surely arise. The original commentary notes: the Ji Xu star governs wind and is the star of the northeast direction.

The mansion of Ji is also known as "Heavenly Array" and "Fox Star," governing foxes and hares; it is also called "Wind Opening" and "Heavenly Empress." It is the palace of the貉 tribe in the heavens, also called the Heavenly Rooster, governing the seasons. It belongs to the Metal element of the Five Phases. When Ji and the Southern Dipper are combined, they symbolize the crown and robes of the Son of Heaven, as well as the private quarters of the palace. Within the palace, there are twenty-seven Lady Concubines and eighty-one palace ladies. There are also four stars representing separate palaces, symbolizing the heads of female officials. Therefore, the mansions of Wei and Ji together represent a total of one hundred and twenty concubines. Wei is the tail of the Eastern Azure Dragon, located at the Earthly Branch of寅, governing the beginning of the winds from all directions. When the stars following Ji move, their shape resembles a箕 being lifted, indicating the king attracting guests. Ji also represents a granary; another interpretation says it is "Heavenly Minister of Works," and it also symbolizes guests staying temporarily.

The "Er Ya" says: Among the twelve divisions, "Xi Mu" is also called "Jin," and the area between Ji Xu and Nan Dou is the crossing point of the Milky Way; another view says Ji Xu is "Tian Shi," which governs the winds from all eight directions. Ji Xu governs wind and the four barbarian tribes; when the stars of Ji Xu move, envoys from the barbarian tribes will come. The star "Ji She" of Ji Xu, when its bright tip flickers, will bring a great wind, which will surely happen within three days. If Ji She wavers, it will bring a fierce wind that carries sand. If the stars of Ji Xu are near the Milky Way, the harvest of that year will be extremely poor; if they are right in the middle of the Milky Way, the whole country will suffer from famine so severe that people will eat each other.

The "Yi Wei Shi Leimou" says: The Eastern Mountain Taishan losing its golden chicken and the Western Mountain Huashan losing its jade sheep are signs of calamity; when the star Ji is bright and large, there are no malicious slanderers in the country; when the small stars in Ji are few, grain prices will rise. Ji is the gathering of the vital energy of the common people, so when the world is peaceful, the stars are numerous, and when the world is unstable, the stars are few. If the Ji stars depart from their position and move, the whole country will be in great disorder, and the people will have to leave their homes and migrate. If the stars are dim, the five grains will be damaged; if the stars are bright, the crops will be abundant; if all the stars gather inward and are weak, the country will suffer from food shortages—overall, it is good for Ji to have many stars. Shi Shen says: The stars Wei and Ji govern the palace of the imperial harem, so a star called "Fuyue" is set beside them, which governs the prosperity of descendants.

The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-One · Divination of the Seven Northern Constellations, Part Two

The Southern Dipper indicates one.

Shi Shen said: The Southern Dipper consists of six stars and spans twenty-six and one fourth degrees. The original book's marginal note: Gan De's record is the same; the "Hong Fan Zhuan" says twenty-two ancient degrees; the "Huainanzi" does not include the one fourth degree. The measurement takes the fourth star of the Dipper's handle as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, being one hundred and sixteen degrees from the north celestial pole. The original book's marginal note: it is twelve and a half degrees south of the Yellow Path; the old calendar added one fourth degree, counting it within the degree measure of the Dipper mansion, later calculations verified that the original had counted less as more - the following marginal note text has errors and omissions, the general meaning is that the remaining fractions of the current calendar are insufficient, falling at the end of one degree of Ying Shi. The Southern Dipper corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to metal in autumn and winter; the original book's marginal note cites "Wu Xian Interpretation of the Five Stars Entering the Mansion Speaking of Auspicious and Inauspicious Omens" which says: all stars of the Dipper belong to wood. The sun and moon and five planets usually pass through the middle of the Southern Dipper, which is the central path. The original book's marginal note: the territory corresponding to the Southern Dipper is Wu state, that is, the southern part of present-day Jiangsu.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Southern Dipper is also called "Fuyue," which is the instrument used for beheading, taking its meaning of governing punishment and killing. The Spring and Autumn Period's Auxiliary Period says: The Southern Dipper governs ranks and salaries, and the star deity is named Zhanzhan, surnamed Juzhong. Shi Shen says: The first star of the Southern Dipper's handle governs Wu, the second star governs Kuaiji, the third star governs Danyang, the fourth star governs Yuzhang, the fifth star governs Lujiang, and the sixth star governs Jiugang—this is a method of dividing the stars within one mansion to specific commanderies and states. Xi Meng says: The six stars of the Southern Dipper are also called "Tianku," and understanding its principles can prevent people from acting recklessly and erratically.

The Northern Officials' Manual says: The Southern Dipper is also known as the Treasury Mansion and the Celestial Gate, and also as the Star of Wisdom and Adaptability and the Star of Blessings. It is also the banner of the Son of Heaven. The two stars to the north of the Dipper are the Treasury Court, the two in the middle symbolize the Chancellor, and the two to the south are the Celestial Treasury Pavilion, also called the Shelter Star and Longevity Star. The large star to the west of the Dipper is the Celestial Gate, which is the main banner of the Son of Heaven and also signifies official positions for scholars. The six stars are best when their brightness is even; if they are equally bright, the world will be at peace. Han Yang says: The first star of the Southern Dipper symbolizes the supreme general, the second star symbolizes the Chancellor, the third star symbolizes the concubine, the fourth star symbolizes the crown prince, and the fifth and sixth stars symbolize the Son of Heaven.

The *Jingzhou Zhuan* says: The Southern Dipper is the position of the Grand Minister. The *Shengqia Fu* says: The Southern Dipper is the heavenly palace of the Son of Heaven, keeping record of the duration of the Son of Heaven's life. Gan De says: The Southern Dipper relates to the length of the Son of Heaven's life, so whenever there is a matter of great importance concerning the state, one should consult the Southern Dipper for divination. The *Ershiba Xu Shan Jing* says: The mountain corresponding to the Dipper mansion is located south of Yangxian Mountain in Wu state, and the star deity of the Dipper mansion resides permanently on this mountain.

Gan De said: The Southern Dipper governs military affairs. When the stars of the Southern Dipper move, war will be initiated. If the stars of the Southern Dipper are bright and large, then titles and rewards will be distributed, the world will be at peace, and generals and ministers will be in harmony. But if the stars are dim and disordered, with irregular positions and strange bright spots that flicker uncertainly, then the king's decrees will be inappropriate, and the world will be full of troubles. Xi Meng said: When the stars of the Southern Dipper are bright, the five grains will be abundant, ministers will gain power and be favored, the government will be peaceful, and the winds and rains will come at the proper time. But if the stars are dim, the five grains will be poor, the stars will shift and form a straight line, and that minister will be banished; the winds and rains will be out of season, and the people will suffer from illness and hardship. The Shi school praised: The Southern Dipper governs titles and salaries, praises the virtuous, and recommends talents, so it is called 'Straight'. There are the stars of Jian assisting it to accomplish things, and they are also included in the system of the Dipper. The Southern Dipper governs titles, merits, and the abundance or scarcity of the harvest, and it widely grants distinctions, harmonizing yin and yang.

The second part of the Ox Star Divination.

Shi Shen said: The constellation Niutou consists of six stars and spans eight degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measurement was nine degrees. The measurement takes the central bright star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located 110 degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located four degrees north of the Yellow Path. Niutou corresponds to wood in spring and summer, and to fire in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's saying that it belongs to wood. The sun and moon, along with the five wandering stars, usually pass through the middle of Niutou, which is called the central path. The original commentary notes: the territory associated with Niutou is the state of Wu. The book Zuo Zhu Qi says: Niutou governs passes and bridges, and the star god is named Lue Xu Chi, with the surname Juan Chu. The book Bei Gao Hou says: Niutou is also called Tian Gu and Tian Guan; the first two stars of the Niuxu constellation, when connected, resemble two plums, named Ji Lu, also called Ju Huo.

Shi Shen said: The six stars of Qian Niu are the heavenly granary; the sun, moon and five wandering stars are collectively called "qi zheng", which the king uses to examine his government. If the stars of Niu Xu are bright and large, and arranged in order, it indicates the flourishing of the king's way and peace throughout the land. If the stars of Niu lose their usual color and appear dark, then that year the five grains will not be ripe, and cattle will suffer many diseases. Gan De said: The two stars above Qian Niu govern roads, the next star to the south governs passes and bridges, and the three stars further south govern the southern regions. Therefore, when these stars move or change color, they should be interpreted according to the affairs they govern.

Xi Meng said: The sound of the celestial drum and the bright color of the starlight are fierce and seem to be angry, indicating that the price of horses will rise. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Officials Chapter" says: The constellation Niuniu represents the sacrificial animals used in worship. Song Jun said: The constellation Niuniu represents the ox's horn. The "Lunyu Zhanyi" says: The constellation Niuniu represents the judicial affairs of winter. The "Twenty-Eight Constellations Mountain Classic" says: The mountain corresponding to the Niushou constellation, Niushan, and the mountain corresponding to the Nushou constellation, Nushan, are connected with each other; the form of both mountains imitates the shape of their respective constellations; the star spirits of Niuniu and Nushou are always residing on the mountains.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the bright star of the Ox mansion disappears, the big ox will die; when the small star disappears, the small ox will die from an epidemic. If the central big star of the Ox mansion appears dim and yellow, the price of grass and fodder will rise tenfold. If the stars of the Ox mansion are aligned in a straight line, grain prices will remain stable; if they form a curved shape, grain prices will rise. If the central big star of the Ox mansion deviates to the left or right and is not bright, it indicates that the general has improper intentions, and cattle prices will soar. If the stars behind approach the central star, cattle prices will be high; if they are far away, cattle prices will be low. If the stars in front deviate to the left or right, the general in the front army has improper intentions; if the stars behind deviate to the left or right, the general in the rear army has improper intentions. Here, the term 'front' refers to the star偏向 the south; 'back' refers to the star偏向 the north. If the Ox mansion does not form a straight line with the Vega star, the whole world will experience disharmony between yin and yang.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the star of the Ox is far from the Milky Way, the price of cattle throughout the land will rise sharply; when the star of the Ox enters the Milky Way, many cattle will fall ill and die. Gan De says: If the star of the Ox moves restlessly, there will be cattle plagues in all directions. Xi Meng says: When the star of the Ox is bright and large, the passes and bridges will be unobstructed. The star of the Ox also governs the harvest of soybeans: if the star first appears yellow, the price of soybeans will be low; if it appears red, the soybeans will be infested with insects; if it appears green, the price of soybeans will rise.

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the stars following the Bull constellation approach the central bright star, the princes will be troubled by cattle and horses, which are four-legged sacrificial animals. If the star color is blue, the animals will fall ill on the way; if the color is black, death will occur but not yet. When the Bull star is bright, the price of cattle will be high; when it is faint and dim, the price will be low. Shi Shen says: The qi of the Bull constellation originates from the city of Lieze, thus governing foreign lands, and it represents the administrative center of the Yue region. The *One Hundred and Twenty Divination* says: Whenever there is a sacrifice involving sacrificial animals, one should consult the Bull constellation. The *Shi School Commentary* says: The Bull constellation governs passes, bridges, and the seven political officials, so it has the nine pits stars around it to regulate waterways. It also says that the Bull constellation is in a strategic location and has a yin nature, thus governing passes and bridges. The central star is higher in position, while the lower stars indicate more calamities for cattle.

The Three Divination Methods of the Female Diviner

Shi Shen said: The star cluster Su Nu consists of four stars and spans twelve degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was ten degrees. The measurement takes the first star in the southwest as the reference star, which reaches the meridian first (the words 'distance west degree' are redundant additions from copying). This star is one hundred and six degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located eight degrees north of the Yellow Path. Su Nu corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to fire in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites the "Wu Xian Divination" which says Su Nu belongs to water. Nine chi to the south of Su Nu is the middle path of the sun and moon and the five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory associated with Su Nu is the state of Yue, which is now Zhejiang region. The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: the star Su Nu governs silk and cloth, and the star deity is named Se Shu, with the surname Zhong Li. The "Bei Guan Hou" says: Su Nu is also called "Tian Shao Fu", "Tian Nu", "Wu Nu", and "Lin Guan Nu".

The Sheng Qie Fu says: Xunü governs matters of marriage and wedding. Wu Xian says: Xunü is the celestial woman, possessing the nature of Treasury star, Command star, and the Dipper. Xi Meng says: Xunü governs the harvest of hemp. If the star's color is white, the hemp will be of good quality; if yellow, it will not be of good quality; if green, the hemp will be infested with insects. The Huangdi Zhan says: When the Xunü star is bright, it is auspicious. Brightness brings order to marriage and wedding affairs, and leads to national wealth and prosperity of the people. Xi Meng says: When the Xunü star is bright and large, the textile industry flourishes; if the star is dim, laws are frequently changed and poetry, literature, and education cease.

The Xuanming Divination says: When the star Xunü is bright, the whole country will have a great harvest, there will be surplus in the weaving and making of cloth, and the state granaries will be full and wealthy; if the star is dim, the whole country will be empty and destitute, and the granaries will lack sufficient stores. Gan De says: When the star Xunü moves, there will be matters of marriage; whenever there is about to be a marriage, one should consult the star Xunü. The Shi School Commentary says: Xunü governs silk and cloth, and is in charge of cutting and arranging, so it has the stars called 'Zazhu' and others set beside it as repositories for storage. It also says: Xunü is the place where treasures and wealth are stored, hence it governs silk and cloth, and provides sustenance for the sovereign.

The mansion of Emptiness is used to predict four things.

Shi Shen said: Xu Su is composed of two stars, spanning ten degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measure was fourteen degrees. The measurement takes the southern star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located one hundred and four degrees from the northern celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located eight degrees north of the Yellow Path. Xu Su corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to metal in autumn and winter; the original commentary notes, citing Wu Xian's view, states that Xu belongs to metal. Nine chi to the south of Xu Su is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory of Xu Su corresponds to the state of Qi, which is now the area of Shandong. The book Zuo Zhu Qi says: Xu Su and Wei Su are the heavenly hall, and the star god of Xu Su is named Kaiyang. The book Xiong Qie Fu says: Xu Su and Wei Su have the meaning of increasing the heavenly way. The book Xiaojing Neji says: Xu is the heavenly court.

The Northern Officials' Manual says: The star of Emptiness Mansion governs weeping and "liang yin"—the period when the sovereign remains silent and does not attend to state affairs during mourning. This is also called "Heavenly Army Market," "Approaching Palace," "Treasury Star and Command Star," and "Village Center." It corresponds to the Yellow Bell tone of the twelve musical tones, also called "Lake Palace" and "Monkey Palace." Xi Meng says: The qi of Emptiness Mansion originates from the Ox Mountain, thus becoming the court of the State of Qi. The Er Ya says: "Northern Land" is the name of the star of Emptiness Mansion. The original commentary notes: Northern Land is the name of the star of Emptiness. Emptiness is also called "Treasury," governing cities and dwellings, temples, worship, and prayers.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The two stars of the mansion of Xū (Emptiness) preside over tombs and also the official position of the Grand Minister. In the eleventh month, when all things wither, this month is governed by the Xū star, so the Xū star presides over matters of death and mourning. Gan De says: The Xū mansion presides over funerals; when the star moves, there will be mourning. Xi Meng says: The Xū and Wei mansions combined preside over banquets and entertaining guests; if there are six small stars within the mansion and they become bright, it indicates the appearance of a divine turtle, and frequent divination by卜 and 筮 will occur. Whenever there is expected mourning, one should consult the Xū mansion for divination.

The *Shan Jing of the Twenty-Eight Mansions* says: The mountain corresponding to the mansion Xū (Emptiness) and the mountain corresponding to the mansion Wēi (Rooftop) are connected to each other, located within the territory of the state of Qi's Chief Mountain. The star spirits of the mansions Xū and Wēi reside on the mountains all year round. Xi Meng says: If the star Xū moves unpredictably, it indicates the implementation of land distribution laws such as the well-field system; if the star Xū is dim, there will be a great drought throughout the land. The *Jingzhou Zhuan* says: The six small stars within the mansions Xū and Wēi should not appear bright. Once they become bright and visible, there will be great calamity. The nearer ones will occur within a year, the middle ones within two years, and the farther ones within three years.

The mansion of the star Rooftop mansion is associated with the number five.

Shi Shen said: The star cluster named "Wēi Sù" consists of three stars, with an additional four stars forming a tomb-like shape. This star cluster spans seventeen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree measure was nine degrees. For measuring, the star located to the southwest is taken as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, and is located ninety-nine degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located more than nine degrees north of the Yellow Path. The star cluster Wēi Sù corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to fire in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that Wēi belongs to earth. Nine chi to the south of Wēi Sù is the central path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes: the territory associated with Wēi is the state of Qi. The book "Zu Zhu Qi" says: the star clusters Xū and Wēi are like lecture halls, and the star god of Wēi is named "Tuichang," with the surname Lü, Jia, and Wang. The book "Bei Gāng Hou" says: Wēi is also called "Tian Fu" and "Tian Shi." Wu Xian said: Wēi is the market where people trade, and also governs the structure of houses.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star of Wei Xu governs the palace hall; looking up at the Wei star can be used to infer matters concerning palaces and buildings. The Wei star governs house pillars and the roofing of houses, used to construct the palaces of the emperor, and thus setting an example for the world; if this star is bright, the world will be peaceful. Gan De says: The star of Wei Xu governs the construction of houses; when the star moves, there will be matters of building houses. Xi Meng says: If the Wei star wavers and is unstable, people throughout the world will have to migrate and move about, and plans for building will be entangled and undecided; if the star is dim, among those living as guests or outsiders, there will be those who will be executed. The Divination of Xuan Ming says: If the Wei star wavers and is dim, the emperor will build palaces, and the people will be conscripted for labor in earth and wood.

Shi Shen said: The stars Xu and Wei are the heavenly hall, and they are used for worshipping the deceased father and mother. Therefore, the stars called 'Fenmu' are placed beside them to indicate the domain of the ancestors' tombs. The combination of Xu and Wei consists of five stars, which are the heavenly temple; the four stars of Fenmu are in charge of worship and offerings. Xi Meng said: The star Wei is related to the action of removing the roof and covering the roof. Whenever there is an intention to roof a house, one should consult the star Wei. The "Shi Shi Zan" says: The four stars of Fenmu are in charge of feelings of sorrow and grief.

The divination for the constellation Yingshi involves six aspects.

Shi Shen said: The two stars of Shi Xu are accompanied by six stars of the Li Palace. This mansion spans across sixteen degrees. The original commentary notes that in ancient measurements it was twenty degrees. The measurement takes the southern star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located eighty-five degrees from the northern celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is located eighteen and a half degrees north of the Yellow Path. Shi Xu corresponds to water in spring and summer, and to earth in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that Shi Xu belongs to wood. Nine chi to the south of Shi Xu is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes that the territory associated with Shi Xu is the state of Wei, which is now the northern part of Henan province. The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: Shi Xu governs the grain storage for military markets, and the star god is named Xuan Yao Deng, with the surname Lou Fang. Huang Fu Mi's "Nian Li" says: Shi Xu is also called "Xiu Guan." The "Di Zhou Zhan" says: Shi Xu is also called "Yi" — this character is marked with a fish radical and a Yu radical in the original text. The "Bei Gao Hou" says: Shi Xu is also called "Xuan Ming" and "Tian Guan," which is the palace of the noble person.

Xi Meng said: Ying Shi is spoken of in connection with the western host Bi Xu. The Er Ya says: Ying Shi is called "Ding". The original book's small note cites Guo Pu saying: Ding means upright - ancient people started building palaces when the star Ding was at the zenith at dusk, hence the name. Wu Xian said: Ying Shi is the heavenly treasury. Song Jun said: Ying Shi is the tongue and the angle. The Shiji Tian Gao Shu says: Ying Shi is the quiet ancestral temple. The Guang Ya says: Ying Shi is called "shi". The Sheng Qie Fu says: the two stars of Ying Shi are the ancestral temple of the Son of Heaven, also called She Ti Gong, and also the court. The Ershiba Xu Shan Jing says: the mountain corresponding to Ying Shi, Ying Shi Mountain, is located to the southeast of Cheng Mountain, connected to the eastern wall mountain, and the stars of the Ying Shi and Bi hosts reside on the mountain all year round.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The two stars of Yingshi govern military provisions, and the six stars of the Palace of Fire govern concealment and hiding. Yingshi is the place where the three armies encamp, with the YuLin stars surrounding the throne of the emperor. These stars are favorable when bright; brightness signifies national prosperity. If they are unstable or shaking, it indicates military action. Gan De says: If the stars of Yingshi move, there will be construction projects involving earth and wood. Xi Meng says: If any of the six stars of the Palace of Fire are missing or incomplete, it indicates worry about descendants. Xi Meng also says: If there is a small, dim star within Yingshi, it signifies insincere worship and sacrifice, so the spirits do not respond; another interpretation suggests there will be many epidemics in the country.

Xi Meng said: Whenever there is a construction or building project, one should consult the stars in Ying Shi. If the two stars in Ying Shi disappear, it indicates that the minister assisting in government will fall ill and die. Ying Shi and Dong Bi form four stars, symbolizing the "Four Assistants" of the Son of Heaven. It is favorable if their positions are upright and orderly. In the middle there are two more stars, symbolizing two guest houses. It is hoped that these two stars are full and properly arranged. "Full" means that there are many small stars surrounding them. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: If the Four Assistants are not properly arranged, the assistants will be disloyal, overstepping their authority, seizing power, and selling their duties. If the two guest houses are not full, the palace women will be immoral, going in and out without restraint, with the queen and concubines overstepping their ranks. The Son of Heaven cannot personally attend to all, leading to resentment and separation among the palace women. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: The palace of Li is the separate palace of the Son of Heaven, governing the place for rest and seclusion. The "Shi School Commentary" says: Ying Shi governs military provisions, used to supply the soldiers, so there are the Yu Lin stars set beside it, examining the affairs of roads and paths; it also says that the two stars of Ying Shi govern military provisions.

The eastern wall represents the number seven.

Shi Shen said: The eastern wall consists of two stars and spans nine degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was fifteen degrees. The measurement takes the southern star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located eighty-six degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located twelve and a half degrees north of the Yellow Path. The eastern wall corresponds to metal in spring and summer, and to water in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's saying that the eastern wall belongs to earth. Nine feet to the south of the eastern wall is the middle path where the sun, moon, and five planets travel. The original commentary notes: the territory associated with the eastern wall is the state of Wei. The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: the eastern wall governs literature and writings, and the star god is named Zhan Gong, with the surname Xing Sun Wang. The "Bei Guan Hou" says: the eastern wall is also called "Tian Chi" and "Tian Shu." Wu Xian said: the eastern wall is the Shelter star and longevity star.

The "Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety" says: The eastern wall is the market, also called the celestial market. The "Book of Harmonious Virtues" says: The eastern wall governs matters concerning earth and wood construction. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: When the stars of the eastern wall lose their original color and the two stars differ in size, it indicates that the king prefers military action, scholars who master the classics are not appointed, and the classics and documents are hidden and not made known, causing the people to become ignorant. The "Gan School Divination" says: The eastern wall governs earth, and when its star moves, earth and wood construction will begin. When the stars of the eastern wall are bright and large, the king clarifies his governance, learning flourishes, and virtuous men emerge in the country.

Xi Meng said: The stars in the eastern wall have left their original positions and moved, indicating that people will start to cultivate fields, gather together to form towns, and worry about matters concerning land and property; another view is that whenever there is construction or building, one should consult the stars in the eastern wall. Shi Shen said: The eastern wall governs the repository of literature and books, so the stars called '垒壁' are placed nearby to guard the palace. The "Shi Shi Zan" said: The eastern wall governs literature and all things; when a planet approaches the eastern wall within seven inches, it will be verified in the territory governed by this constellation. The "Hong Fan Zhuan" said: The seven northern constellations cover a total of ninety-nine degrees, but the current measurement is ninety-eight and one fourth of a degree.

The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-Two, Part Three: Divination of the Seven Western Constellations

The first star of the Legs mansion

Shi Shen said: The Kuixu constellation consists of sixteen stars and spans sixteen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measure was twelve degrees. The measurement takes the large star in the southwest as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located seventy degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located fourteen degrees slightly less north of the Yellow Path. The Kuixu constellation is associated with metal in spring and summer, and with water in autumn and winter. The original commentary cites Wu Xian's statement: Kuixu belongs to metal. Nine chi to the south of Kuixu is the central path of the sun, moon, and five wandering stars. The original commentary notes: the territory of Kuixu corresponds to the state of Lu, that is, the southern part of present-day Shandong. The "Zuo Zhu Qi" says: Kuixu is the weapon storage in the underworld, and the star god is named Liechang, with the surname Jun Liu Fang. The "Xiguan Hou" says: Kuixu is also called "Tianku" and "Tianbian Pianjiangjun"; the so-called weapon storage refers to the military storehouse. Kuixu is the water god Xuanming in the sky, governing ditches, ponds, rivers, and the Milky Way; the associated tree is elm, and the associated products are ox tendons and leather. The Five Phases of Kuixu belong to metal.

The "Book of Celestial Officials" says: Kuai is called "Feng Shi," meaning a large pig, also known as "Tian Shi" — the original text here mistakenly writes "Shi Guan Shu" instead of "Tian Guan Shu." The "Poetic Commentary" says: Kuai governs the affairs of women. The "Sheng Qie Fu" says: Kuai is a ditch. The "Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety" says: Kuai is the court. Wu Xian says: Kuai is the celestial storehouse; it also says that Kuai and Lou are the judicial stars of spring. Xi Meng says: Whenever there is an undertaking to dig ditches, one should consult the Kuai star; the large star in its southwest direction is called "Tian Shi's eye," also known as the great general, so one hopes it to be bright.

The *Xuanming Zhan* says: The bright star of the Qiu mansion symbolizes the Grand General; it is desirable for it to be bright, and the two ends of the entire mansion should avoid being close to the Milky Way. According to this, one can observe water disasters and military affairs. If this star sprouts apointed rays, sways unpredictably, and moves forward and backward without stability, the country will surely have military action; some also say it signifies the issuance of an amnesty decree. The *Twenty-Eight Mansions Mountain Classic* says: The Qiu mountain and the Lou mountain are connected to each other, and the stars of the Qiu and Lou mansions have their deities residing on the mountains continuously. The *Huangdi Zhan* says: If the star of Qiu sways, there will certainly be military affairs in the country, and it will be fulfilled within the same year. The *He Tu* says: When the emperor indulges in luxury and governs unjustly, the Qiu mansion will display signs of military conflict.

The Wenyao Gou says: When the Kui star forms a straight line facing the court for nine years, there will be a calamity of regicide, the world will lack written laws, and military officers and camps will not be at peace. Gan De says: When the Kui star moves, there will be digging of canals. Xi Meng says: The large star at the front of the Kui mansion turns yellow and suddenly becomes dim, indicating that a general will rebel against his sovereign; yellow is not its natural color, and the abnormal yellow color is what makes it an omen. The Jingzhou Zhuan says: When the middle star of the Kui mansion is bright, there will be a great flood. The Shi school says: The Kui mansion governs military campaigns; because military prohibitions are unclear, another military star is set to command it; it also says that the Kui mansion governs treasuries and weapons, controlling and governing, thus achieving systems and affairs.
