Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

Shi Shen said: The Willow Mansion consists of eight stars and spans fifteen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient measure was eighteen degrees. The measurement takes the third star from the western end as the reference star, which reaches the meridian first, located seventy-seven degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located twelve degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Willow Mansion is associated with water in spring and summer, and with fire in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the Willow Mansion belongs to earth. Six feet to the north of the Willow Mansion is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory corresponding to the Willow Mansion is the Zhou region, that is, the area around Luoyang. The "Nan Gao Hou" says: the Willow Mansion is the Treasury star, also called the Seal star and the Star of Livelihood, also called the Great General of Heaven, and also called the Lesser Minister of Heaven; the corresponding country is Di, the associated tree is mulberry, and the associated products are sheep and pigs.

The Er Ya says: "Zhou" is the same as Liu Xu; Liu belongs to the twelve divisions under the name Chun Huo; it is also written as "Zhu," because the two characters have similar pronunciations. The Sheng Qie Fu says: Zhu governs matters related to carpentry. The Xiao Jing Zhang Ju says: Liu is the celestial storehouse. Wu Xian says: Liu is the official in charge of wood, governing craftsmen; it also says Liu is the celestial storehouse. The Shi Ji Tian Gao Shu says: Liu is the beak of the red bird, governing grass and trees. Qi Bo says: The qi of Liu Xu originates from Dao Ze Mountain, being the administrative center of that region. Xi Meng says: Whenever there are matters concerning carpentry and construction, one should consult Liu Xu for divination.

The "Book of the Twenty-Eight Mansions and Mountains" says: The mountain of Willow, the mountain of Seven Stars, and the mountain of Zhang are connected with each other, all located to the northeast of the mountain of Song High Mountain in the Zhou region. The star spirits of the three mansions of Willow, Seven Stars, and Zhang reside on the mountains all year round. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: Willow is the neck of the Vermilion Bird, governing the food of ministers and high officials; it consists of eight stars, used to guard against deceit and fraud. These stars are favorable when bright; if bright, the ministers will be steady and vigilant, able to prevent unexpected changes; if the stars are dim, the king's decrees will be improper, and the palace will not be at peace. The "Spring and Autumn Writings" say: When the mansions of Shen and Willow are extinguished and cut off, it signifies ministers killing the king and sons killing their fathers.

Xi Meng said: If the stars of Liuxu form a straight line facing directly, there will be people in the world plotting to attack the sovereign; if the stars gather inward, the military forces are full within the country; if the stars are dim, the virtue and grace of the state will decline and disperse; if the stars are bright, the country will be stable and prosperous. When the Liuxu star is bright, the kitchen provisions are complete. When the Liuxu star raises its head upward, the royal decree arises, and the ministers who assist the sovereign are virtuous. The Shi school's commentary says: The Liuxu star is responsible for presenting food to the sovereign and harmonizing flavors, so it has the "Tianji" stars set beside it for worship. The Liuxu star governs eating and nourishing all things, carrying out benevolent virtue to bestow grace, thus fulfilling its role.

Seven Stars Divination of the Four Directions

Shi Shen said: The Seven Stars span seven degrees. The original commentary notes that the ancient degree was thirteen degrees. The measurement takes the central bright star as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located ninety degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is located slightly less than twenty-one degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Seven Stars are associated with fire in spring and summer, and with water in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the Seven Stars belong to water. Thirteen degrees to the north of the Seven Stars is the central path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes that the territory associated with the Seven Stars is the Zhou region. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: The Seven Stars belong to the Southern Red Emperor, also known as "Heavenly Storehouse" and "Heavenly Imperial Palace." It is positioned at the noon position, where the fire energy is abundant, and the energy enters the Central Palace, benefiting the stars above; it governs clothing, imperial crowns, garments, and embroidery-related matters.

Huang Fu Mi said: Seven Stars is also called "Yan Jing". The "Southern Officials Chronicle" said: Seven Stars is also called "Tian Yuan", which is the Treasury Star and Command Star, governing the protection of wild herbs and vegetables. The "Jade Calendar" said: Seven Stars is also called "He Tian". The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" said: Seven Stars is the officer of the circle, also called "Jin Qiao". Song Jun said: The term "Zhu" refers to observing the Seven Stars. The "Sheng Qia Fu" said: Seven Stars governs the areas by the sea. Wu Xian said: Seven Stars governs the granting of wealth and goods, and is also the heavenly court. The "Records of the Grand Historian: The Book of Celestial Officials" said: The neck of the Vermilion Bird is the Seven Stars, which is the officer of the circle, governing urgent matters. Xi Meng said: Seven Stars guards the heavenly emperor against bandits and thieves. The "Star Groups Divination" said: Seven Stars governs military affairs.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The Seven Stars are in their proper position, governing the yang energy, and are the heart of the Vermilion Bird; these stars govern clothing, like the wings of a bird, used to cover the bird's body, hence they govern clothing. These stars are good when they are bright; brightness signifies great prosperity of the Way of the King, and gentlemen will not remain at home but wish to serve in office, while the virtuous will no longer hide themselves. If the stars are dim, the ministers in the central position will flee, the virtuous men will not find peace, and the world will be empty. When the king opens the gates in all directions to attract the virtuous and listen to advice, the Seven Stars will shine brightly and be moist with dew, and heaven will support the order of the world.

Gan De said: When the Seven Stars move, there will be military action. Xi Meng said: When the Seven Stars become larger, hemp will mature. When the Seven Stars are bright, the officials will act justly; when they are dim, the emperor will be ill. When the Seven Stars are scattered apart, the whole country will change its policies, and each family will have its own plans but cannot be united. The Shi school praised: The Seven Stars govern clothing, which covers the body, so they set up the "Huang Yuan" stars beside them to cut and make clothes. It also said that virtue and blessings belong to goodness and sincerity, and thus the matter of clothing is assigned to the Seven Stars.

Zhang Xu occupies the fifth position.

Shi Shen said: Zhang Xu is composed of six stars, spanning eighteen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was thirteen degrees. The measurement is based on the first star as the reference star, which reaches the meridian first, located ninety-seven degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located twenty-six and a half degrees south of the Yellow Path. Zhang Xu corresponds to wood in spring and summer, and to water in autumn and winter; the original commentary notes, citing Wu Xian's view, says Zhang belongs to water. Thirteen feet north of Zhang Xu is the middle path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory of Zhang Xu is in the Zhou region. The "Nan Gao Hou" says: Zhang is the Treasury, also called "Yu Fu," the place where treasures, classics, and the divine spirits of the king are stored; also called "Tian Wang," governing clothing; also called "Tian Chang." When this star is bright, the king will flourish.

Qi Bo said: The qi of Zhang Xu originates from the mountains by the Jiang River, which is the celestial storehouse; another account says it originates from the mountains of Dao and Shih, which is the treasury of the Zhou territory, as well as the central government office. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: Zhang is the Treasury Star and Command Star, located in the throat area of the Vermilion Bird, governing the jewels and treasures of the emperor, the ritual vessels used in the ancestral temple, and the garments worn by the imperial court officials. It supports the central palace where the emperor resides internally, and externally spreads its wings to guard the imperial palace. The "Saintly Harmony Symbol" says: Zhang governs wine and food.

The "Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety" says: Zhang is the Seal star and star of livelihood, which governs the treasures and ceremonial objects used by the king and the ancestral temple; the four stars to its west are the Four Ministers. Within the imperial palace there is the Wings mansion, and outside there is the Zhang mansion, used to protect the imperial palace. The "Records of the Grand Historian: Celestial Offices" says: The pouch of the Vermilion Bird is the Zhang mansion, which is the kitchen, governing banquets and entertaining guests. The "Northern Celestial Officials" says: Zhang is the kitchen, governing the affairs of banquets and entertaining guests; its associated wood is the paulownia tree, its associated products are millet, as well as chickens, dogs, and sheepskin; its corresponding state is Zhou. The "Treatise on the Constellations" says: Zhang governs the granting of rewards; when this star moves, there will be matters of granting rewards.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the star Zhang is bright and large, the king will carry out the five kinds of ceremonies—auspicious, ominous, military, guest, and joyful—correctly, thus attaining the central and upright governance of the world. If the star Zhang is dim, the king should reform the rites, dismiss officials belonging to the metal element, and appoint officials belonging to the wood element, and then the star will regain its brightness. The Sea Divination says: When the star Zhang is dim, the king's descendants will be few. Xi Meng says: When the star Zhang is bright and large, the kitchen provisions are complete. If the star Zhang is dim, there will be many sick people, many people migrating, rebels gathering in the world, and military conflicts will arise. The Shi School's Commentary says: The star Zhang governs the granting of feasts to guests, and the host and guest are harmonious, so it is placed near the star Xiao Wei and others—original note: one version reads 'thus it is placed'—so that rites and propriety are in harmony with the times. The star Zhang governs growth and nurture, and its position is at the peak of yang energy. The ruler thus tends toward peace and order, and comprehensively controls the principles and regulations.

The Wings Mansion is used to predict the sixth outcome.

Shi Shen said: The Wing Mansion consists of twenty-two stars and spans eighteen degrees. The original commentary notes: the ancient degree was thirteen degrees. The measurement takes the star located centrally to the west as the reference star, which first reaches the meridian, located ninety-nine degrees from the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes: it is located twenty and a half degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Wing Mansion is associated with metal in spring and summer, and with earth in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the Wing belongs to metal. Twelve chi to the north of the Wing is the central path of the sun, moon, and five planets. The original commentary notes: the territory of the Wing Mansion corresponds to the state of Chu. The "Southern Officials' Observations" say: the Wing Mansion governs the prosperity of the world, symbolizing the five kinds of music and the eight rows of dance of the Son of Heaven; it is also called "Hua Gong," "Tian Tu Shi," and "Tian Xu," used to harmonize the five tones.

Shi Shen said: Yi is the celestial music bureau, responsible for assisting, used to guard the Taimei Palace. Its arrangement follows the directions of the nine provinces. When included in the court, it represents generals, soldiers, and ministers, arranged straight and orderly like a measuring rope; within and outside the host star, there are a total of forty-six small stars, each official's position is arranged according to their degree, symbolizing minor officials. The "Shengqia Fu" says: Yi governs guests. The "Xiaojing Zhangju" says: Yi is the market. The "Bai'er Shi Zhan" says: Yi is the celestial singer, governing coastal areas, also being the celestial flag and celestial capital; the corresponding country is Chu, the assigned wood is chrysanthemum, the assigned products are the wooden yoke of a chariot, as well as slaves, feathers, and symbols and instruments.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star Wing harmonizes the five tones, corrects the pitch of the sheng and guan instruments; it serves as one of the five ministers to guard the Taimei Palace, arranged in accordance with the nine provinces' directions; when it enters the court, it acts as the prime minister. If this star is bright, the virtue of the emperor is clear; the king welcomes virtuous men and summons sages, there is joy from ministers offering advice, the rites and music flourish greatly, and the world is peaceful. If the star is dim, the emperor has worries, there will be a guest from the distant sea, the rites and music become discordant, and the twelve pitch pipes cannot be in harmony.

Wu Xian said: Wing is the heavenly wings, and also governs the land by the sea. The Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Celestial Officials says: Wing is the feather of a bird, and governs distant travelers. The Twenty-Eight Mansions Mountains Classic says: The mountain of Wing and the mountain of Zhěn are connected to each other, located in the middle of the gate mountain of Chu, with the highest terrain, and the star spirits of Wing and Zhěn mansions reside on the mountain all year round. Xi Meng said: Whenever there is an affair concerning the sea and distant lands, one should consult the mansion of Wing. The Classic of the Star Mansions says: Wing governs the four directions of the barbarians, and when this star moves, the barbarians will come to pay homage to the Son of Heaven.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Wing Star shines brightly, the king's ministers are all virtuous talents gathered together, the ways of the Three Kings are clear and unimpeded, sages and virtuous men appear at the right time, there is joyous gathering, rites and music flourish greatly, and the world is peaceful. Xi Meng says: When the Wing Star is bright and large, the four barbarian peoples are respectful and obedient, the Wing Star follows the Son of Heaven on military campaigns; when all the stars gather inward, the world is in mutual warfare; when the stars are bright, banners are raised for action; when the stars are dim, the world has no worries. The Shi School's praise says: The Wing Star governs heavenly music and entertainment, so it is close to the Taiwei Enclosure, sharing in the noble pleasures. The twenty-two stars of the Wing Mansion govern heavenly music and entertainment, raising banners and holding symbols of authority, with all things flourishing and spreading out.

The Chariot Mansion occupies the seventh position.

Shi Shen said: The Chariot Mansion consists of four stars, with an additional star called Changsha and two stars called Xie. This mansion spans seventeen degrees. The original commentary notes that in ancient measurements it was sixteen degrees. The measurement takes the star in the northwest as the reference star, which reaches the meridian first, located ninety-nine degrees south of the north celestial pole. The original commentary notes that it is slightly less than fifteen degrees south of the Yellow Path. The Chariot Mansion corresponds to wood in spring and summer, and to earth in autumn and winter; the original commentary cites Wu Xian's view that the Chariot Mansion belongs to metal. Thirteen feet north of the Chariot Mansion is the central path along which the sun, moon, and five planets move. The original commentary notes that the territory associated with the Chariot Mansion is the state of Chu. The "Southern Officials' Observations" say: The Chariot Mansion is also called "Tianzhi," which governs wind and death and mourning. The small star to the east is called "Xie," which is the pin on the axle head of a chariot; the small star to the west is called "Xie Gao," which is the oil used to lubricate the axle. When the Xie star merges with the Chariot Mansion, border regions will mobilize troops. If the Gao star, which is two feet away from the Chariot Mansion, moves closer to it, it is called "Tian Gao." When the Xie star appears, chariots and cavalry will move out; when the Gao and Xie stars return to their original positions, the troops will withdraw, and distant warfare will cease.

The Shengqia Fu says: Chariot Mansion governs matters of carriages and horses. The Xiaojing Zhangju says: Chariot Mansion is the palace court and also a carriage. Wu Xian says: Chariot Mansion is the celestial storehouse, the star of Chu, and also corresponds to Yuji; Chariot Mansion is also the hall where the Son of Heaven governs state affairs. The Nan Gao Hou says: Chariot Mansion is the celestial circular palace; the corresponding state is Chu, covering also the Han River, the Yangtze River, Jingzhou, Xiang River, and Hengshan region; the associated wood is cypress and bow material, and the associated products are green hemp and silk cloth. Qi Bo says: The qi of Chariot Mansion originates from Meng Mountain, grows into the star of Chu, and is the palace court of Chu territory. The Huangdi Zhan says: Chariot Mansion governs the discernment of calamities, is the Minister of State Affairs, and also one of the four assistants. The Shiji·Tian Gao Shu says: Chariot Mansion governs wind.

The Huangdi Zhan says: The Chariot Mansion is used to observe the longevity of the sovereign, so a star called Changsha is placed beside it, which governs prolonging life. Two stars called Xie are located near it, with the left Xie representing the same-surname feudal princes and the right Xie representing the different-surname feudal princes. Brightness of Changsha and Xie stars is favorable, as brightness signifies long life and the state will not perish. If the stars are dim, it indicates death. If the stars are not visible for seven consecutive days, it foretells calamity upon the princes and dukes. The Shiji Tian Gao Shu says: The Changsha star should not be bright. If it shines as bright as four stars in Zhenshu, resembling five stars entering Zhenshu together, great military conflicts will arise.

Xi Meng said: The small star to the north of Chariot Mansion is called Xie; if Xie is bright enough to match the four stars or moves forward or backward, it indicates a great military campaign. The small star to the south of Chariot Mansion, two feet away from Chariot Mansion, is called Gao; when Xie moves forward and Gao approaches Chariot Mansion, this is called "Heaven's defeat," and if Gao remains like this for three days, chariots and cavalry will be mobilized; when Xie and Gao return to their original positions, the military forces will withdraw. If there is already a war and Xie is far away from Chariot Mansion, the military campaign will cease. The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" say: Chariot is the heavenly chariot; if the chariot loses its Xie, it will collapse.

Xi Meng said: The Chariot Mansion star is bright and large, with the chariot fully prepared. When both the Chariot Mansion star and the Changsha star are bright, the emperor's inner court ministers are close and strong. If the Chariot Mansion star moves, the emperor will worry about military plans. If all the stars gather inward, military actions will increase greatly. If the Chariot Mansion star is scattered and not properly aligned, and there is a missing star, it is like the chariot lacks its crossbar, indicating the king will have troubles. Whenever there is military movement, one should consult the Chariot Mansion. If the crossbar stars of the Chariot Mansion rise, southern barbarians will invade. The "List of Constellations" says: if the crossbar stars move, chariots and cavalry will be mobilized. Shi Shen said: the two crossbar stars should not be bright; if they are bright, the chariot axle will be sluggish and the chariot will be obstructed. The crossbar stars should slightly advance, maintaining a distance of seven inches from the Chariot Mansion, which is favorable. If the distance is more than a foot, it is an ominous sign.

Xi Meng said: The Chariot Mansion star is bright, and great military actions will occur. The "One Hundred and Twenty Divinations" said: If the axle star continues to move for three months, there will be great misfortune for carriages and horses. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" said: If the Changsha star is bright, it indicates the monarch will live a long life. The "Luo Writing" said: If the Changsha star is bright, there will be plots of rebellion among the ministers below, and military calamities will follow. The "Spring Annals' Brocade" said: The Changsha star and the axle star in the left should not be bright; if they shine as bright as the four stars of the Chariot Mansion, great military actions will occur. Shi Shen said: If the Changsha star is bright, the monarch will enjoy happiness and blessings, and his descendants will flourish. Wu Xian said: If the Changsha star is bright, the Son of Heaven will have a long and prosperous life.

Shi Shen said: The Chariot Mansion governs death and mourning, capable of discerning calamities, so a star called Changsha is placed beside it to prolong life. Shi Shen also said: The four stars of the Chariot Mansion govern death and mourning, establishing the timing and order of seasons, with strict and solemn rituals; in spring, it is the ruling energy and slightly appears to be ending, but by late summer there will be calamities. Wu Xian said: Changsha is the official of wood; the star Changsha governs imprisonment and escape. The "Hong Fan Zhuan" said: The seven stars of the southern celestial region total 107 degrees, but the current measurement is 112 degrees.

The constellations Jiao and Kang are the territories corresponding to the State of Zheng. The area they cover extends from the 12th degree of Zhen宿 to the 4th degree of Di宿, corresponding to the earthly branch Chen, and is called the "Life Star" section. In the third lunar month, all things begin to break through the earth, the spring energy spreads out, nurturing all things, allowing each to fulfill its natural nature without suffering premature death, hence it is called the "Life Star"—the original text says "not suffering from heavenly calamity," where the second "heaven" should be read as "yao" (premature death). The original book's small note says: The "Erya" says that the Life Star is Jiao and Kang. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Yueling" says that during the middle of autumn, the sun and moon meet at the Life Star, also known as "Kuying." Huafu Mì says: The Life Star is also called "Tianku," "Tianyi," and "Tianzheng." The "Tianguan Shu" says: Jiao, Kang, and Di correspond to Yanzhou. The "Huainanzi" says: Jiao and Kang belong to Zheng. Fei Zhi's "Zhouyi Fenye" says: From the 7th degree of Zhen宿 to the 11th degree of Di宿 is the Life Star. Cai Yong's "Yueling Zhangju" says: From the 6th degree of Zhen宿 to the 8th degree of Kang宿 is called the Life Star section, which is the territory of the State of Zheng, known as the Zheng Star, corresponding to the constellations Jiao and Kang.

The eight counties of Wencheng, Dingling, Xiangcheng, Liyang, Yingsheng, Changshe, Yangyao, and Jia in Yingshui Commandery were originally established during the Qin dynasty. They are located to the east of Runan and to the west of Hongnong, and also include Xian'an and Yiyang—two counties established during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han and belonging to Hongnong Commandery. All these areas fall under the celestial region of the State of Han. The original commentary notes that the "Records of the Grand Historian: Hereditary House of Han" states that the Han family were descendants of the Ji clan, and Han Wuzi served in the state of Jin and was granted the territory of Han as a fiefdom. The "Book of Songs: Folk Songs" mentions the states of Chen and Zheng, which shared the same celestial region as Han. The original commentary also notes that the "Records of the Grand Historian: Hereditary House of Chen" states that Chen was originally the ancient capital of the Taohao clan. After King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang dynasty, he sought out the descendants of Shun and found Gui Man, who was granted the territory of Chen to honor Shun's worship, becoming Hu Gong. The county of Chen in the Han dynasty's Huaiyang Kingdom was located in that area.

The state of Zheng is today's Xinzheng in Henan Province—the original note says it is Xinzheng County, belonging to the Henan Commandery; the Henan Commandery was originally the Sanchuan Commandery of the Qin Dynasty, renamed by Han Gaozu. That area was originally the old territory of the fire official of the Gaoxin Dynasty and the former capital of Zhurong. The original note says that Chongli served as the fire official under Emperor Gaoxin, and his achievements were great, capable of illuminating and harmonizing the world, so Emperor Gaoxin bestowed the name 'Zhurong'; 'Zhu' means great, and 'Rong' means brightness. The two instances of 'Diyiying' in the text should be 'Diyi Ku'. In addition, Chenggao and Xingyang—notes say these are two counties belonging to the Henan Commandery—along with Songyang and Cheng in Yingchuan—notes refer to them as two counties, which should be Songgao and Yangcheng, but there was a transmission error—were also within the territory of Zheng. The original note says that the 'Zheng Shi Jia' states that King Xuan of Zhou enfeoffed his younger brother You in Zheng, who became the Duke Huan of Zheng. This area belonged to the Yanzhou region in terms of the state's territory. The original note says that the 'Shangshu · Yugong' states that between the Ji River and the Yellow River is Yanzhou; the 'Zhou Guan' states that east of the Yellow River is Yanzhou; the 'Weiyang Fenye' states that the capital of Zheng was in Yingchuan, from Xingyang to the south to Liang Mountain, and to the east to Long Mountain, which is now part of Yingchuan.

The three stars of Di, Fang, and Xin are the celestial regions corresponding to the State of Song. The area under their jurisdiction extends from the fifth degree of Di to the ninth degree of Wei, corresponding to the position of Mao in the twelve earthly branches, and is called "Great Fire." The east belongs to wood, and the star Xin is located at the position of Mao; fire arises from the heart of wood, hence it is called "Great Fire." The original commentary notes: The "Er Ya" says that "Da Chen" refers to Fang, Xin, and Wei, and "Great Fire" is also called "Chen." The common phrase "Shen Chen" also refers to "Shen Shang," meaning the star Shen and the star Xin, which has already been explained in the annotations of the star positions in the state of Wei. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Li Ji · Yue Ling" states that on the first day of the ninth month, the sun and moon meet at "Great Fire," which is the month when the handle of the Big Dipper points to Xu. The "Zhou Li" says that "Great Fire" is also called "Wei" and "Tian Ma." Huang Fu Mi says that "Great Fire" is also called "Tian Xiang" and "Tian Fu." The "Tian Gao Shu" says that Fang and Xin correspond to Yu State. The "Huainanzi" says that Di, Fang, and Xin belong to Song. Fei Zhi says that from the eleventh degree of Di to the eighth degree of Wei is called "Great Fire." Cai Yong says that from the eighth degree of Kang to the fourth degree of Wei is called the region of "Great Fire." The "Weiyang Fen Yi" says that the star of the family occupies Fang and Xin, and now belongs to Liang State.

The commanderies and states belonging to this region are: Liang—note: originally the Dang commandery of the Qin dynasty, changed to Liang State by Han Gaozu; Chu—note: established as Chu State by Han Gaozu, changed to Pengcheng Commandery by Han Xuan帝; Shanyang Commandery—note: established from Liang State by Han Jingdi; Dongping—note: established as Jidong State from Liang State by Han Jingdi, changed to Dongping State by Han Xuan帝; Jiyin—note: established as Jiyin State from Liang State by Han Jingdi; and two counties, Xuchang and Shouzhang, of Dongjun—note: Shouzhang was originally named Shoulang, changed to Shouzhang by Han Guangwu帝 to avoid the name of his uncle.

All these places belong to the territory of the State of Song. The Zhou dynasty enfeoffed Wei Zi at Song, which is the area around today's Suiyang. (Original note: Suiyang County belongs to Liang State; King Cheng of Zhou enfeoffed Wei Zi, the younger brother of King Zhou of Shang, at Song, to continue the worship of the ancestral temple of the Yin dynasty.) This area was originally the former residence of Yebó, the official in charge of fire during the era of the Taoyáng clan. (Original note: Yebó was the eldest son of Emperor Gaoxin, Di Ku, and lived in Shangqiu.) Dingtáo in Jiyin Commandery (Original note: Dingtáo was a county belonging to Jiyin State.) is the place referred to as the State of Cao in the "Book of Songs · National Wind." (Original note: King Wu of Zhou enfeoffed his younger brother Shu Zhen Duo at the State of Cao, which was around Dingtáo County.) This region belonged to Yu State in the Nine States system. (Original note: The "Book of Documents · Yu Gong" says, "Jinghe is the territory of Yu State," and the "Rites of Zhou" says that the area to the south of the Yellow River is called Yu State; "Fen Yi" says: The State of Song controlled Xiacai and Huaiyang, from the southern Hei River to the Ji River and Han River, as well as Pei Commandery, Jiyang, Taixing, and Donghai areas, which are now part of Liang State.)

The constellations of Tail and Winnowing Basket correspond to the territory of Yan State. The celestial region from the tenth degree of Tail to the eleventh degree of Southern Dipper is associated with the earthly branch "Yin" and is called "Ximi." Tail is the end of the wood-type constellations in the east, while Southern Dipper is the beginning of the water-type constellations in the north. The star division "Ximi" lies exactly between these two, separating the water and wood constellations, hence its name "Ximi." (Original commentary: The "Er Ya" says that "Ximi" is also called "Jin," located between the constellations of Winnowing Basket and Southern Dipper, which is the crossing point of the Milky Way. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Yue Ling" says that on the first month of winter, the sun and moon meet in "Ximi," and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the亥 position. The "Zhou Li" says that the crossing point of "Ximi" is also called "Tian Zhao" and "Han Jin." Huafu Mi says that "Ximi" is also called "Tian Chengxiang," "Tian Sikong," "Tian Jiazi," and "Tian Jin." The "Tian Gao Shu" says that Tail and Winnowing Basket correspond to Youzhou. The "Huainanzi" says that Tail and Winnowing Basket belong to Yan. Fei Zhi says that from the ninth degree of Tail to the ninth degree of Southern Dipper is the crossing point of "Ximi." Cai Yong says that from the fourth degree of Tail to the sixth degree of Southern Dipper is called the division of "Ximi." The "Weiyang" says that the star division of Yan State is Tail and Winnowing Basket.)

After King Wu of Zhou had pacified the Shang dynasty, he enfeoffed Zhao Gong at Yan. This state passed down through thirty-six generations, and at the same time as the other six states, Yan claimed the title of king. (Note from the original text: the term 'wang' here means to be a king.) To the east of Yan were Yu Yang, You Bei Ping, Liao Dong, and Liao Xi; to the west were Shang Gu, Dai Jun (Note from the original text: these six commanderies were established by the Qin dynasty.), Yan Men (Note from the original text: Yan Men is a commandery established by the Qin dynasty.). To the south, Yan controlled Yi County, Rong Cheng, Fan Yang, Bei Xin Cheng, as well as the old Zhuo County, Liang Xiang, and Xin Chang (Note from the original text: a total of eight counties; Zhuo Jun was established by the Qin dynasty.). There was also An Ci County in the Bu Hai commandery (Note from the original text: An Ci is a county name; Bu Hai Jun was established by Emperor Gao of Han.). All these areas belonged to the territory of Yan, and were within the region corresponding to Yan in the Nine Provinces, which belonged to Youzhou. (Note from the original text: The Zhou dynasty established Youzhou from the territory of Ji Zhou. The Book of Rites says: the northeastern region is called Youzhou. The Er Ya says: Yan is Youzhou. The Weiyang says: the capital of Youzhou was Ji, extending south to Ji Shi, east to Heng Mountain, and now includes Shang Gu, Yu Yang, You Bei Ping, Liao Dong, Liao Xi, and Zhuo Jun.)

The constellations of Dou Xu and Qian Niu are the celestial regions corresponding to the states of Wu and Yue. The area of the sky from the twelfth degree of Nan Dou to the seventh degree of Xu Nu falls under the earthly branch "Chou" (the original text says "Shi," which is likely a mistake for "Chou"). This section of the sky is called "Xing Ji." The term "Xing Ji" means that it oversees and governs all things, located at the position of the twelfth month, where all things conclude and begin again, hence it is called "Xing Ji." (Original book note: The "Erya" says that "Xing Ji" refers to the constellations of Dou and Qian Niu. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Yueling" says that on the second month of the second year, the sun and moon meet in Xing Ji, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of Zi. Huafu Mi's "Nian Li" says that Xing Ji is also called "Tian Jin," "Tian Fu," "Tian Gou," and "Tian Ji." The "Tian Guan Shu" says that the constellation of Dou oversees rivers and lakes, while Qian Niu and Xu Nu correspond to Yangzhou (the original text mistakenly says "Liu Zhou"). The "Huainanzi" says that the constellation of Dou belongs to Wu and Yue. Gao Yu's commentary on the "Lüshi Chunqiu" says that the constellation of Dou belongs to Wu, and the constellation of Niu belongs to Yue. Fei Zhi says that from the tenth degree of Nan Dou to the fifth degree of Xu Nu is Xing Ji. Cai Yong's "Yueling Zhangju" says that from the sixth degree of Nan Dou to the second degree of Xu Nu is called the section of Xing Ji. "Weiyang" says that the celestial regions of Wu and Yue are the constellations of Niu and Dou.)

The regions of today's Kuaiji, Jiangjiu (both originally set up by the Qin dynasty), Danyang (originally called Zhangjun during the Qin dynasty, renamed Danyang by Emperor Wu of Han), Yuzhang (established by Emperor Gao of Han), Lujiang (established by Emperor Wen of Han from the territory of the Huainan Kingdom), Guangling, Liu'an (Emperor Wu of Han changed Jiangdu Kingdom into Guangling Kingdom and divided the territory of Hengshan to establish Liu'an Kingdom), and Linhuai (a commandery established by Emperor Wu of Han) all belong to the area of Wu's dominion. According to the Records of the Grand Historian: The House of Wu, Wu Taibai was the eldest son of King Taiwang of Zhou. He and his younger brother Zhongyong gave up the throne to their younger brother Jili, and then fled to the region of Jingman. They cut their hair short and tattooed their bodies, and the people of Jingman admired their virtue and came to submit to them. Taibai then called his state Gouluguo. After King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang dynasty, he sought out the descendants of Taibai and Zhongyong, and found Zhongyong's great-grandson Zhouzhang, who was officially enfeoffed in the land of Wu.

The areas of today's Congwu, Yulin, Hepu, Jiaozi, Jiuzhen, Rinnan, and Nanhai all belong to the territory of the state of Yue. (Original book note: The "Records of the Grand Historian: The Annals of Yue" states that the ancestors of Yue were a庶son of Xia Dynasty's Xiaokang, who was granted the territory of Huiji and was called Wuyu, to carry on the worship of the great Yu. After passing through several generations, the descendants declined and became commoners, and the worship of Yu was interrupted for over a thousand years. Later, a child was born who could speak at birth, claiming to be a descendant of Wuyu, and the Yue people then revered him as their king, called Wuyu Wang. It was passed down to his grandson Yunchang that Yue revived.) The regions of Wu and Yue both belonged to the state of Yu in the Nine Provinces. (Original book note: The "Book of Documents: Yu's Tribute" says, "The area around the Huai and Hai rivers is called Yu." The "Rites of Zhou" says that the southeast is called Yu. The "Weiyang" says: The land of Wu and Yue extends north to the Yangtze River, south to the mountainous areas, east to the sea, and west to Dongting Lake.)

The constellations of Nuxu and Xu are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Qi. The area from the eighth degree of Nuxu to the fifteenth degree of Weishi is assigned to the earthly branch "Zi" in the twelve divisions, and this section is called "Xuanxiao." "Xuan" means black, which belongs to the northern direction, while "xiao" means depletion or emptiness. In November, yang energy is hidden below, while yin energy prevails above, and all things are sealed off and silent, with nothing growing. The universe appears empty, hence it is called "Xuanxiao." (Original notes: Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Monthly Orders" states that in the twelfth lunar month, the sun and moon meet in Xuanxiao, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the "Chou" position (the original text says "Shi"). The "Rites of Zhou" says that Xuanxiao is also called "Tianyi," which was the former capital of Zhuanyu. Huafu Mi says that Xuanxiao is also called "Nuxu," "Shaofu," "He Gu," and "Tianji." The "Tian Gan Book" says that Xu and Weishi correspond to the state of Qingzhou. The "Huainanzi" says that Xu and Weishi belong to Qi. Fei Zhi says that from the sixth degree of Nuxu to the thirteenth degree of Weishi is Xuanxiao. Cai Yong says that from the second degree of Nuxu to the tenth degree of Weishi is called Xuanxiao. "Weiyang" says that the stars corresponding to Qi are Xu and Weishi.)

Qi territory had to the east Zichuan (a state established by Han Wen Emperor from Qi territory), Donglai (a commandery established by Han Gao Emperor), Langya (a commandery established by the Qin dynasty), GaoMi (a state established by Han Xu Emperor from JiaoXi state), and Jiaodong (a state established by Han Gao Emperor from Qi territory); to the south, Taishan (a commandery established by Han Gao Emperor), Chengyang (a state established by Han Wen Emperor from Qi territory); to the north, Qiansheng (established as a state by Han Gao Emperor), and it also controlled Qinghe to the south, as well as GaoLe, GaoCheng, ChongHe, and YangXin in Bohai commandery; to the west, Jinan (a state established by Han Wen Emperor from Ji state), and Pingyuan (a commandery established by Han Gao Emperor). All these places belonged to the territory of Qi. The Records of the Grand Historian, Qi Family says: Qi Taigong Lv Wang assisted King Wu of Zhou, so King Wu enfeoffed Taigong at Qi territory. After King Wu's death, King Cheng set the borders of Qi, extending east to the sea, west to the Yellow River, south to Mu Ling, and north to Wudi, with its capital at Yingqiu. Qi territory belonged to the Nine Provinces under the state of Qingzhou. The Book of Documents, Yu Gong says: 'The sea and Mount Dai form Qingzhou'; The Rites of Zhou says: the east is called Qingzhou. The Er Ya says: Qi territory is called Yingzhou, which is the same as Qingzhou. The Weiyang says: the capital of Qi was at Ying, relying on Yingqiu, extending north to Yan territory, west to Jihe, south to Lin water, and east to the sea.

The constellations of Wei Xiu, Shi Xiu, and Bi Xiu correspond to the territory of the State of Wei. The celestial region from the 16th degree of Wei Xiu to the 4th degree of Kui Xiu is associated with the Earthly Branch 'Hai' and is called 'Zou Zi'. 'Zou Zi' means sighing. In the tenth lunar month, the Yin energy begins to grow strong, while the Yang energy retreats and is stored away. All things lose the vital energy that nourished them throughout the year, leading to sorrow and lamentation, and resentment towards the absence of Yang energy, hence the name 'Zou Zi'. (Original commentary: 'Zou Zi' originally was an ancient feudal lord. Emperor Ku married a woman from the Zou Zi clan, and they had a son named Zhi, who was the elder brother of Yao. The 'Erya' says: 'Zou Zi' refers to Ying Shi and Dong Bi, also known as 'Shi Wei', which was the state of the dragon driver family in the Xia Dynasty. The 'Zuo Zhuan' records that Chang Hong answered King Jing of Zhou, saying: In the year when the Duke of Cai killed his king, the planet Jupiter was in Shi Wei. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the 'Yueling' says: In the first lunar month of the first season, the sun and moon meet in Zou Zi, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of Yin. The 'Zhou Li' says: 'Zou Zi' is also called 'Shi Wei', 'Zhu Xu', 'Zou Zi', 'Tian Fu', 'Bei Ling', and 'Qing Zhong'. The 'Tian Gao Shu' says: Ying Shi and Dong Bi correspond to Bingzhou. The 'Huainanzi' says: Bingzhou corresponds to Ying Shi and Dong Bi. Fei Zhi says: From the 14th degree of Wei Xiu to the first degree of Kui Xiu is Zou Zi. The eastern commandery of Dongjun (originally established in the Qin dynasty), Wei commandery (established by Han Gaozu), Liyang, and Henan commandery (Henan commandery was established by Han Gaozu, originally the old capital of the Shang dynasty; after the Zhou dynasty destroyed the Shang, it divided the Shang capital area into three feudal states; the "Yong Feng" and "Wei Feng" sections of the "Book of Songs" refer to this area), as well as Yawan and Chaoguo, all belong to the territory of the state of Wei. The state of Wei was destroyed by the Di people, and the Duke Wen of Wei was relocated to Chuoqiu. Thirty years later, his son Duke Cheng was moved to Diqu, which is today's Puyang. The territory of Wei belonged to the Jiuzhou region, specifically under the commandery of Bingzhou. (Original note: The Zhou dynasty established Bingzhou from the territory of Jizhou; the "Zhou Li" says: the northern part is called Bingzhou. However, this system of division does not include the commanderies and counties under Bingzhou; Bingzhou had nine commanderies, all of which were included in the star divisions of Yan, Zhao, and Qin, the reasons for which are unknown. "Weiyang" says: the capital of the state of Wei was set in Puyang, its territory extended from the Wang River eastward to Pei, which is now Dongjun.)

The constellations Kuí and Lóu are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Lu. The area from the fifth degree of Kuí to the sixth degree of Wèi is associated with the earthly branch Xu in the twelve terrestrial branches, and this star division is called "Jiàng Lóu." "Jiàng" means descending, and "Lóu" means curling. Yin energy begins to arise in the fifth lunar month, and together with Yang energy, it moves until the eighth lunar month, after which Yang energy gradually descends. In the ninth lunar month, Yang energy wanes, and the hexagram "Bō" (Breaking Up) becomes dominant. Yang energy is almost completely stripped away, leaving only a single Yang at the top, causing all things to wither and die, curling up and dying, hence the name "Jiàng Lóu." (Original commentary: The "Erya" says: Jiàng Lóu refers to Kuí and Lóu. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the "Yueling" says: In the second month of the middle spring, the sun and moon meet in Jiàng Lóu, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the卯 position. The "Zhou Li" says: Jiàng Lóu is also called "Qingming." Huang Fu Mi says: Jiàng Lóu is also called "Tian Guan." The "Tian Guan Shu" says: Jiàng Lóu corresponds to the state of Lu in Xu. The "Huainanzi" says: Kuí and Lóu are the celestial regions of Lu. Fei Zhi says: From the second degree of Kuí to the third degree of Wèi is called the division of Jiàng Lóu. The "Weiyang" says: The celestial stars corresponding to Lu are Kuí and Lóu.)

Lu territory extended to the eastern commandery of the East Sea, established by Han Gao帝. To the south it included the state of Si Water, set up by Han Wu帝 from the territory of the East Sea commandery. It extended all the way to the Huai River, and also took control of the lower districts of Linhuai commandery, such as Xiaoxiang, Sui Ling, Tong, and Qu Lu, all of which belonged to the territory of Lu. King Cheng of Zhou granted the former territory of Shao Hao, around Qu Fu, to his son Bo Qin, making him the Duke of Lu and the successor to the Duke of Zhou to carry out the worship. The Records of the Grand Historian, Lu's Annals states: After King Wu of Zhou destroyed the Shang, he granted his younger brother Duke of Zhou Dan the former territory of Shao Hao. Duke of Zhou remained to assist King Wu and did not go to his fiefdom. After King Wu's death, King Cheng ordered Duke of Zhou's son Bo Qin to take his father's place to govern the fiefdom, which is why he was called the Duke of Lu. Lu territory belonged to the Xuzhou commandery among the nine provinces. The Book of Documents, Yu Gong states: "The area from the sea to the Tai Mountains and the Huai River is Xuzhou." The Er Ya states: The area east of Qi is called Xuzhou. The Zhou dynasty abolished Xuzhou and incorporated it into Qingzhou, but Han Wu帝 restored Xuzhou. The Weiyang states: Lu territory extended east to Wen River, west to Xingyang, north to Dai, and south to the Yangtze River.

The regions of the stomach mansion and the hairy head mansion correspond to the state of Zhao. The area from the seventh degree of the stomach mansion to the eleventh degree of the net mansion is associated with the earthly branch 'You' and is called 'Da Liang'. 'Liang' means strong, and in August, when the white dew begins to fall, all things become firm, mature, and strong, hence the name 'Da Liang'. (Original commentary: The Er Ya says that Da Liang is the hairy head mansion. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Yueling says that in the third month of spring, the sun and moon meet at Da Liang, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the Chen position. The Zhou Li says that Da Liang is also called 'Taiyang' and 'Xi Ling'. Huafu Mi says that Da Liang is also called 'Gengtian', 'Tiancang', 'Tianyu', 'Dajun', and 'Pianjiangjun'. The Tian Guan Shu says that the hairy head and net mansions correspond to the Jiuzhou. The Huainanzi says that the hairy head and net mansions belong to the state of Wei. Fei Zhi says that from the fourth degree of the stomach mansion to the eighth degree of the net mansion is Da Liang. Cai Yong says that from the first degree of the stomach mansion to the second degree of the net mansion is the section of Da Liang. The Weiyang says that the star division of the state of Zhao also includes the Sanxu mansion and the Fa star.)

The State of Zhao originally belonged to the territory of the State of Jin, and the State of Zhao came into being after the division of Jin into three states. (Original book note: Han Gaozu changed the Han County to the State of Zhao.) The territory of Zhao to the north included Xindu (Original book note: Established by Han Gaozu.), Zhen Ding (Original book note: Zhen Ding was a vassal state, established by Han Wudi.), and Changshan (Original book note: Changshan was a commandery, established by Han Gaozu. Originally named Hengshan Commandery, it was renamed Changshan to avoid the name of Emperor Wen Liu Heng.) and also included Gaoyang and Zhengzhou Xiang in the Zhuo Commandery (Original book note: These are two counties; Zhuo Commandery was established by Han Gaozu.). To the east were Guangping (Original book note: Guangping was a vassal state, established by Han Wudi.), Julu (Original book note: Julu was a commandery, established by Han Gaozu.), and Qinghe (Original book note: Qinghe was a vassal state, established by Emperor Wen of Han from the territory of Zhao.), and also included Dongping, Shuzhong, Wuyi, Wanan, Dongzhou, Chengping, and Tongwu in the Bohai Commandery (Original book note: These counties were all established by the Han dynasty in the area north of the Yellow River.). To the south reached Fushui (Original book note: Fushui is a river, some say it is the Zhang River.), as well as Fanyang, Neihuang, and Xichou (Original book note: These three counties belonged to the Wei Commandery, established by Han Gaozu.). To the west were Taiyuan (Original book note: Taiyuan was a commandery, established by the Qin dynasty.), Dingshang (Original book note: Dingshang was a commandery, established by Han Gaozu.), Yunzhong (Original book note: Established by the Qin dynasty.), Wuyuan (Original book note: Originally called Jiuyuan Commandery during the Qin dynasty, renamed by Han Wudi.), Shuofang (Original book note: Established by Han Wudi.), and Shangtang (Original book note: Established by the Qin dynasty.). Shangtang was originally a separate commandery of the State of Korea, since Korea was close to Zhao, it eventually submitted to Zhao, so it was also included as part of Zhao's territory. The Zhao family ruled from Zhao Su onwards for nine generations, became a marquisate for four generations, and after King Jing moved the capital to Handan, three generations later came King Wuling, and after five more generations, the state was destroyed by the State of Qin.

(Original commentary: The "Records of the Grand Historian: Zhao Clan" states: The ancestors of the Zhao clan were descendants of the Emperor Zhuanxu and descendants of Bo Yi; Yu the Great once married a woman of the Yao surname to his family and bestowed upon them the surname Ying. They passed through the Xia and Shang dynasties, serving as feudal lords for generations. Later, Zao Fu drove for King Mu of Zhou, accompanied King Mu on a western tour, and just as Xu Yanwang caused chaos, Zao Fu drove at a speed of a thousand miles a day, carrying King Mu back to attack the Xu state, defeating the Xu people. King Mu then granted the city of Zhao to Zao Fu, and the surname Zhao originated from this. ) The territory of Zhao belonged to the Jiuzhou region. (Original commentary: The "Book of Documents: Yu Gong" says: The water control of Jiuzhou started from the Hukou, then controlled the Liangshan and Qishan. The "Zhou Li" says: The area within the Yellow River is called Jiuzhou. "Weiyang" says: The capital of Zhao was Handan, extending north to Changshan and Dajun.)

The constellations of Bi, Zi, and Shen are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Wei. The area from the twelfth degree of Bi to the fifteenth degree of Dongjing corresponds to the earthly branch 'Shen' and is called 'Shi Shen'. This refers to the time of July when all things are extremely flourishing, and the heavy Yin energy descends, causing fruits to mature and fall, hence the name 'Shi Shen'. (Original commentary: Gao Xinshi had two sons, the elder named Yanbo and the younger named Shi Shen, who were incompatible with each other. Emperor Yao therefore moved Yanbo to Shangqiu, making him the chief worshipper of the star Chen, and the Shang people continued this tradition, so the star Chen is also called the Shang star. He moved Shi Shen to Dashia, making him the chief worshipper of the star Shen, and the Tang people continued this tradition, so the star Shen is also called the Tang star. During the time of King Wu of Zhou, he had a dream that inspired him to have a son named Shuyu. When King Cheng of Zhou took over, the state of Tang experienced turmoil, and Duke Zhou destroyed the state of Tang. King Cheng then used a joking remark to grant Shuyu the territory of Tang, which was the area east of the He River and Fen River within a hundred li, that is, the present-day Jinyang County of the Taiyuan Commandery. Shi Shen was exactly the celestial position corresponding to the star Shen, hence the name of the star position. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the 'Book of Rites · Monthly Orders' states: In the fourth month of the first season, the sun and moon meet in the position of Shi Shen, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of Si. The 'Rites of Zhou' says: Shi Shen is also called 'Bu Yi'. Huafu Mi says: Shi Shen is also called 'Da Tang', 'Zhongwei', 'Tianlu', 'Tiangou', 'Tianjing', and 'Mao Tou'. The 'Book of Celestial Officials' says: the constellations of Zi and Shen correspond to Yizhou. The 'Huainanzi' says: the constellations of Zi and Shen belong to Zhao. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the 'Rites of Zhou · Bao Zhangshi' says: Shi Shen belongs to Jin. Fei Zhi says: from the ninth degree of Bi to the eleventh degree of Dongjing is Shi Shen. Cai Yong says: from the sixth degree of Bi to the tenth degree of Dongjing is the position of Shi Shen. 'Weiyang' says: the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Wei are Wei, Mao, and Bi.)

All these places belong to the territory corresponding to the state of Wei.

(Original commentary: The Records of the Grand Historian: The State of Wei was descended from Bo Gao, who shared the same surname as the royal family of the Zhou dynasty. Bo Gao assisted King Wu of Zhou and was granted the territory of Bi, so he changed his surname to Bi. Later, his descendant Bi Wan was granted the territory of Wei, serving Duke Jin Xian Gong. He led the military campaign against the states of Huo, Geng, and Wei, and conquered them. Duke Jin Xian Gong then granted the territory of Wei to Bi Wan, which was Yong'an County in the River East Commandery. Bi Wan's son was Wei Wu Zi, whose son Wei Da Zi moved the capital to Huo, which was Yong'an County in the Pingyang Commandery. Da Zi's son Wei Zhao Zi moved to Anyi, which was Anyi County in the River East Commandery. Zhao Zi's grandson Wei Xuan Zi conspired with Zhao Yan to divide the territories of Qi and Yangshe. Xuan Zi's great-grandson Wei Huan Zi conspired with the states of Zhao and Han to overthrow Zhi Bo. Huan Zi's grandson Wei Wen Hou, during his reign, made the state of Wei strong. King Zhou Lie Wang officially recognized it as a state. Wen Hou's son Wei Wu Hou, together with Zhao and Han, overthrew the state of Jin and divided its territory, so Sanxiu became the celestial region corresponding to the state of Wei.) The territory of Wei belonged to the Jiuzhou region, under Yizhou. (Original commentary: Emperor Wu of Han renamed Liangzhou as Yizhou. Yizhou was not originally the territory of Wei. The entire territory of Yizhou was included in the celestial regions of Qin and Chu. This explanation is very brief and the intention is unclear. The Weiyang says: The state of Jin was located in Taiyuan. From the territory of Wei westward to Xiang area was under its jurisdiction. Now it includes He Dong, He Nei, Shangdang, and Yunzhong.)

The constellations of East Well and Ghost are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Qin. The area from the 16th degree of East Well to the 8th degree of Willow corresponds to the Earthly Branch 'Wei' and is called 'Chunshou'. The seven southern constellations as a whole resemble a bird, with East Well as the bird's crown and Willow as the bird's beak. 'Chun' refers to a bird, and 'shou' means head, hence the name 'Chunshou'. (Original commentary: The Er Ya says that the bird's beak is called 'zhuo', referring to Willow. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Li Ji's Yueling says that in the second month of summer, the sun and moon meet in Chunshou, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of Wu. The Zhou Li says that Chunshou is also called 'Xiao Zhang'. Huafu Mi says that Chunshou is also called 'Tianlu', 'Tianzi Shi', 'Baihu Jiang', and 'Fuyue'. The Tian Gao Shu says that East Well and Ghost correspond to Yongzhou. The Huainanzi says that East Well and Ghost belong to Qin. Fei Zhi says that from the 12th degree of East Well to the 4th degree of Willow is Chunshou. Cai Yong says that from the 10th degree of East Well to the 4th degree of Willow is called Chunshou. The Weiyang says that the stars corresponding to Qin are East Well and Ghost.)

From the old pass of Hongnong Commandery to the west, there were Jingzhao, Fufeng, and Fengyi, which were originally the territories of the Qin Dynasty's Inner Historian and were divided into three auxiliary commanderies during the Han Wudi's reign. To the north were Beidi and Shangjun, which were set up during the Qin Dynasty. To the west were Xihexi, Dingxi, Tianshui, which were established during the Han Wudi's reign, and Longxi, which was set up during the Qin Dynasty. To the south were Bazhun, Shuzhun, Guanghan, which were set up during the Qin Dynasty, Jianwei, which was established during the Han Wudi's reign, and Wudu. To the northwest were Jincheng, Wudi, Zhangye, which were originally the territories of the Xiongnu Xutu King and Kunye King respectively, Jiuquan, and Dunhuang, which was originally a part of Jiuquan but was divided into a commandery during the Han Wudi's reign. Further west were Zhangke, Yuexi, and Yizhou. All of these were territories of the Qin Dynasty. (Original note: These three commanderies were established by the Han Wudi's expansion.)

All of the above belong to the territory of the state of Qin. The original note says: The Records of the Grand Historian: The Annals of Qin states that the ancestor of Qin was named Fizi, who shared the same surname as the House of Zhao. He was the sixteenth-generation descendant of Boyi. He raised horses for King Zhao of the Zhou dynasty, and the horses multiplied greatly. King Zhao therefore granted him the status of a minor vassal and gave him the territory of Qin as his fiefdom, naming him Qin Ying. The place was the county of Long in the commandery of Tianshui. Qin Ying's great-grandson was Qin Zhong. King Xuan of the Zhou dynasty sent him to attack the Western Rong tribes, but he was killed by the Rong people. King Xuan then ordered Qin Zhong's son, Zhanggong, and his four younger brothers to attack the Western Rong tribes, who were defeated. They were granted the territory of their ancestor Daliu, and thus settled in Dahuqiu, which is now the county of Huili in the commandery of Fufeng. The territory of Qin belonged to the commandery of Yongzhou among the Nine Provinces. The original note says: The Book of Documents: The Tribute of Yu says, "The region west of the Black Water and the Yellow River is called Yongzhou." The Rites of Zhou says: The western direction is called Yongzhou; Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty later renamed it Liangzhou. The Weiyang says: The capital of Qin was first at Luyang, then moved to Xianyang, and now it is Chang'an. The region of Beidi starts from Hua Mountain, extending west to Suishen and Liusha, which now includes Sanfu, Bashu, Hanzhong, Longxi, Beidi, and Shangjun.

Willow Mansion, Seven Stars, and Extended Net Mansion are the celestial regions corresponding to the royal house of the Zhou dynasty. The area of the sky from the ninth degree of Willow Mansion to the seventeenth degree of Extended Net Mansion corresponds to the earthly branch 'Wu' in the twelve divisions, and this section of the sky is called 'Chun Fire'. The south is associated with the element fire in the Five Phases, which refers to the time of May when yang energy begins to grow strong. The star of great fire appears in the southern sky at dusk, located in the area of the Seven Stars and the Bird, so it is called 'Chun Fire'. (Original book note: The Er Ya says: Willow Mansion is also called Chun Fire. Willow, Seven Stars, and Extended Net are the middle part of the seven mansions in the south, hence the name 'Fire'. The Zhou Li says: The flag is drawn with a bird and has seven streamers, symbolizing the bird. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Li Ji's Yueling says: In the sixth month of the season of the great heat, the sun and moon meet in the region of Chun Fire, and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of 'Wei'. The Zhou Li says: The celestial well is also called 'Zhi Fang'. The Tian Gao Shu says: The Seven Stars and Extended Net correspond to the three rivers. The Huainanzi says: The Seven Stars and Extended Net belong to the Zhou. Fei Zhi says: From the fifth degree of Willow Mansion to the twelfth degree of Extended Net Mansion is Chun Fire. Cai Yong says: From the third degree of Willow Mansion to the twentieth degree of Extended Net Mansion is called the section of Chun Fire. The Weiyang says: The stars assigned to the Zhou dynasty are Willow Mansion and Extended Net Mansion.)

Today, the areas of Luoyang, Gucheng, Pingyang, Yanshi, Gong, and Weishi (which is also called Goushi) in the Henan Commandery all fall under the territory corresponding to the Zhou dynasty according to the celestial divisions. The original notes say that the Records of the Grand Historian, Zhou Dynasty Annals, state that the ancestor of the Zhou dynasty was Qi, who was born with a miraculous omen. As he grew up, he loved agriculture and helped Yu舜 sow various grains. Yu舜 appointed him as the master of agriculture in Tai, which is now in the area of Bifeng. He was called Houji and was of the Ji clan. His great-great-grandson Gongliu established a state in Bin, which was also within the territory of Bifeng. His tenth-generation descendant was Taiwang, who moved to Qi because of the invasion by the Di people, which is now the area of Meiyang in Bifeng. Taiwang's grandson, King Wen, had a virtuous character, and the Zhou dynasty was about to flourish, so they moved the capital to Feng, which was in Du County of Jingzhao Commandery. King Wen's son, King Wu, destroyed the Shang dynasty and moved the capital to Hao, which was in Chang'an County of Jingzhao Commandery. King Wu's son, King Cheng, built Luoyi, which is now the Henan County of the Henan Commandery; there is also a saying that King Cheng himself lived in Luoyi. The sixth-generation descendant, King Yi, moved again to Qianqiu.

The territory of the Zhou dynasty during the Han dynasty was classified under the Three Rivers. (Original book note: The Three Rivers refer to the three commanderies of Henan, Heinni, and Hedong. According to the note: When the Zhou dynasty was about to fall, it only remained with the commandery of Henan, so it was used as the territory corresponding to the Zhou dynasty; however, the two commanderies of Heinni and Hedong were included in the star regions of the state of Wei, so the reason why the Zhou's territory is called 'Three Rivers' is unclear. "Weiyang" says: The capital of the Zhou dynasty was located in Luoyang, extending west to the Hua Mountains, east to Rongze and Shaoshi, north to Henan, and stretching all the way to Pusu water, which is now the area of Hedong and Chenliu.)

The constellations Wing and Chariot are the celestial regions corresponding to the state of Chu. The area from the 18th degree of the Extended Net mansion to the 11th degree of the Chariot mansion corresponds to the earthly branch 'Si' (the original text writes 'Si' as 'Yi'), and this section of the sky is called 'Chunwei'. In the seven southern birds of the Vermilion Bird, the Chariot mansion is the bird's tail, hence the name 'Chunwei'. (Original notes: Zheng Xuan's commentary on the 'Rites of Zhou: Monthly Orders' states that on the first month of the seventh lunar month, the sun and moon meet in 'Chunwei', and the handle of the Big Dipper points to the position of Shen. The 'Book of Rites' says that 'Chunwei' is also called 'Niao Tu'. Huafu Mi says that 'Chunwei' is also called 'Niao Zhu', 'Tian Gen', and 'Mao'. The 'Book of Celestial Officials' says that the constellations Wing and Chariot correspond to the state of Jingzhou (the original text mistakenly writes 'Wing and Chariot to'). The 'Huainanzi' says that the Wing mansion belongs to Chu. Fei Zhi says that from the 13th degree of the Extended Net mansion to the 6th degree of the Chariot mansion is 'Chunwei'. Cai Yong says that from the 12th degree of the Wing mansion to the 6th degree of the Chariot mansion is the 'Chunwei' section. 'Weiyang' says that the celestial stars corresponding to Chu are the Wing and Chariot mansions.)

The regions of Nanjun (originally established in the Qin dynasty), Jiangling (originally a county under Nanjun, mentioned again here), Jiangxia (established during the reign of Han Gaozu), Lingling (a commandery established by Han Wudi), Guiyang, Wuling (both commanderies established by Han Gaozu), and Changsha (originally a commandery in the Qin dynasty, changed to a feudal state by Han Gaozu), as well as Jiangzhong (established in the Qin dynasty) and Ruzhan (established by Han Gaozu), all fall under the celestial region of Chu. During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, the former teacher of the kings, Yu Xiong, his grandson Xiong Yi, was granted the title of Chu Zi in the area of Jingman, and settled in Danyang. Later, after more than ten generations, Xiong Tong proclaimed himself King Wu, and the state gradually grew stronger. After five more generations came King Zhuang, who annexed the areas between the Yangtze and Han rivers, and conquered Chen and Cai, while subduing Shen, Xi, Sui, and Tang. Ten generations later, King Qingxiang moved the capital eastward.

(Original commentary: The "Records of the Grand Historian: Chu Family Annals" says that Yu Xiong was a descendant of Zhurong, of the Qian clan. DanYang is now the Zhijiang County of the southern commandery of Jingzhou. King Wen, the son of King Wu, established his capital at Ying, which is now Jiangling. King Zhuang's great-grandson King Zhao was defeated by the Wu state, and the Wu army attacked Ying. King Zhao fled to the Suo state. The Chu minister Shen Baoxu went to the Qin state for help, and the Qin state then sent troops to rescue Chu, achieving a great defeat of the Wu army. Just at that time, the younger brother of King Hu Lü, Fu Gu, rebelled and proclaimed himself king, so Hu Lü had to retreat, and King Zhao was able to return to his country, and moved his capital to the Ruo County of the southern commandery. The original text here has some errors.) The land of Chu belonged to the Jiuzhou region. (Original commentary: The "Book of Documents: Yu Gong" says "Jing and the southern part of the Yangtze River is the commandery of Jingzhou"; the "Rites of Zhou" says that the southern direction is called Jingzhou. The "Weiyang" says: the territory of Chu extended south to the Ji River, north to the Huai River, east to the sea, and west to the Yu Fu Mountain. Now it is the area of Huaiyang, Ruyang, Lujiang, Changsha, and Nanhai, and the former capital of Chu was at Nan Ying.)
