Years, months, days, and hours of punishment
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The arrangement of Earthly Branches in mutual punishment is: Zi (rat) punishes Mao (rabbit), with Mao as the "punished below" and Zi as the "punishing above"; Chou (ox) punishes Xu (dog), with Xu as the "punished below" and Wei (earth pig) as the "punishing above"; Yin (tiger) punishes Si (snake), with Si as the "punished below" and Shen (monkey) as the "punishing above"; Mao (rabbit) punishes Zi (rat), with Zi as the "punished below" and Mao as the "punishing above"; Chen (dragon) self-punishes Chen; Si (snake) punishes Shen (monkey), with Shen as the "punished below" and Yin (tiger) as the "punishing above"; Wu (horse) self-punishes Wu; Wei (earth pig) punishes Chou (ox), with Chou as the "punished below" and Xu (dog) as the "punishing above"; Shen (monkey) punishes Yin (tiger), with Yin as the "punished below" and Si (snake) as the "punishing above"; You (rooster) self-punishes You; Xu (dog) punishes Wei (earth pig), with Wei as the "punished below" and Chou (ox) as the "punishing above"; Hai (pig) self-punishes Hai. If the wind comes from the "punished below" direction, the calamity is less severe; if it comes from the "punishing above" direction, the disaster is more serious. In the case of self-punishment, it combines both the "punishing above" and "punished below" effects, resulting in the most severe calamity. The term "Three Punishments" refers to these three types: punishing above, punishing below, and self-punishment. The original text mentions "Wei (earth pig) punishes Ren (water rat), with Ren as the 'punished below'," but "Ren" should be "Chou (ox)."
Five Tombs
The trines亥, 卯, 未 form a wood trinity, with the墓 of wood at 未; 寅, 午, 戌 form a fire trinity, with the墓 of fire at 戌; 申, 子, 辰 form a water trinity, with the墓 of water at 辰; 巳, 酉, 丑 form a metal trinity, with the墓 of metal at 丑; and the墓 of earth is at 辰. These five positions are collectively known as 「五墓」. Wind coming from the墓 position indicates a decline in destiny and difficulty in achieving things. According to the commonly accepted trinity method, the墓 of water should be at 辰, but the original text says 亥. The current version still follows the original text.
Heavenly Stem of Jia is harmed by the Earthly Branch of Zi.
The arrangement for mutual harm (刑) among the Heavenly Stems is: Jia harms Wu, Yi harms Ji, Bing harms Geng, Ding harms Xin, Wu harms Ren, Ji harms Gui, Geng harms Jia, Xin harms Yi, Ren harms Bing, and Gui harms Ding. They are all four positions apart and harm each other in pairs. Yang Stems harm Yang Stems, and Yin Stems harm Yin Stems. When predicting wind direction, this is used to determine if the Day Stem and the direction from which the wind comes are in conflict.
Confront and overcome.
The twelve Earthly Branches are in opposition as follows: Zi conflicts with Wu, Wu conflicts with Zi; Chou conflicts with Wei, Wei conflicts with Chou; Yin conflicts with Shen, Shen conflicts with Yin; Mao conflicts with You, You conflicts with Mao; Chen conflicts with Xu, Xu conflicts with Chen; Si conflicts with Hai, Hai conflicts with Si. The two conflicting branches are directly opposite each other on the twelve-hour circle. The phrase "wind comes from the opposite direction" mentioned earlier refers to the wind coming from the direction opposite to the Day Branch.
The Five Sounds and Six Categories method.
The five tones correspond to numbers: the first number corresponds to Gong, the third to Zheng, the fifth to Yu, the seventh to Shang, and the ninth to Jue. The six elements are the combination of the heavenly stems and the trigrams: Geng corresponds to the Zhen trigram, Xin to Xun, Wu to Kan, Ji to Li, Bing to Gen, and Ding to Dui. The earthly branches are divided among these six stems: Zi and Wu belong to Geng, Chou and Wei to Xin, Yin and Shen to Wu, Mao and You to Ji, Chen and Xu to Bing, and Si and Hai to Ding. This is the foundation of the Nayin sound elements. The original text mistakenly writes 'Ren' instead of 'Chou' in the phrase 'Ren belongs to Xin'.
The trigram Qian governs Jiazi and Renwu. Jia is the beginning of a yang day, while Ren is the end of a yang day. Zi is the beginning of a yang hour, while Wu is the end of a yang hour. The first line of the trigram Qian is at Zi, and the fourth line is at Wu. Since Qian governs yang, the inner trigram takes Zi and the outer trigram takes Wu, with the inner trigram representing the beginning and the outer trigram representing the end. The trigram Kun governs Yiwei and Guichou. Yi is the beginning of a yin day, while Guo is the end of a yin day. Chou is the beginning of a yin hour, while Wei is the end of a yin hour. The first line of the trigram Kun is at Wei, and the fourth line is at Chou. Since Kun governs yin, the inner trigram takes Wei and the outer trigram takes Chou. The trigram Zhen governs Gengzi and Gengwu. Zhen represents the eldest son, and the first line of the trigram Qian takes Jia, which corresponds to Geng, so Zhen takes Geng. By the transmission from father to son, Zhen shares the same Zi and Wu hours as the father trigram Qian. The trigram Xun governs Xinchou and Xinwei. Xun represents the eldest daughter, and the first line of the trigram Kun takes Yi, which corresponds to Xin, so Xun takes Xin. By the transmission from mother to daughter, Xun shares the same Chou and Wei hours as the mother trigram Kun. The original text mentions 'Gui Ren', 'outer trigram governs Ren', 'Ji is the eldest daughter', and 'governs Ren Wei', which should be corrected to 'Gui Chou', 'outer trigram governs Chou', 'Xun is the eldest daughter', and 'governs Chou Wei'.
The trigram Kan governs Wushen and Wuyin. Kan represents the young male in the center, thus it takes the middle heavenly stem and the middle earthly branch. The trigram Li governs Jimao and Jiyou. Li represents the young female in the center, thus it also takes the middle heavenly stem and the middle earthly branch. The trigram Gen governs Bingchen and Bingxu. Gen represents the young male, and the top line of the trigram Qian takes Ren, which corresponds to Bing, thus Bingchen and Bingxu are taken, forming the fifth combination. The trigram Dui governs Dingsi and Dinghai. Dui represents the young female, and the top line of the trigram Kun takes Gui, which corresponds to Ding, thus Dingsi and Dinghai are taken, forming the sixth combination. In summary, the twelve earthly branches are paired with the ten heavenly stems according to the trigrams each stem belongs to. Then, based on the paired numbers, the corresponding sound element is determined, which is used to govern the day. The day stem and the earthly branch are paired to produce a sound, which is the method of nayin. The original text 'Wu Jia', 'Si Mao, Si You', 'Bing Wu' should be read as 'Wushen', 'Ji Mao, Ji You', 'Bing Xu'.
Nayin sound element
The six day branches Jiazi, Renshen, Jiawu, Gengchen, Renyin, Gengxu belong to the Yang Shang. The six day branches Yichou, Guiyou, Xinhai, Yiwei, Xinsi, Guimao belong to the Yin Shang. The six day branches Bingyin, Wuzi, Jiachen, Jiaxu, Bingshen, Wuwu belong to the Yang Zhi. The six day branches Dingmao, Jichou, Yisi, Yihai, Dingyou, Jiwei belong to the Yin Zhi. The six day branches Wuchen, Gengyin, Renwu, Renzi, Wuxu, Gengchen belong to the Yang Jiao. The six day branches Jisi, Xinmao, Guiwei, Guichou, Jihai, Xinyou belong to the Yin Jiao. The six day branches Gengwu, Bingxu, Wushen, Wuyin, Gengzi, Bingchen belong to the Yang Gong. The six day branches Xinwei, Dinghai, Jiyou, Jimao, Xinchou, Dingsi belong to the Yin Gong. The six day branches Jiashen, Renchen, Bingwu, Jiayin, Bingzi, Renxu belong to the Yang Yu. The six day branches Yiyou, Guisi, Dingwei, Dingchou, Yimao, Guihai belong to the Yin Yu. Whenever the text below refers to Gong day, Shang day, Jiao day, Zhi day, or Yu day, it should be determined according to this table. This table divides the sixty jiazi into five tones, each tone having two groups of six day branches, one Yang and one Yin. When divining wind, first check which tone the day branch belongs to, then determine from which direction the wind is coming, and match the two to determine examples such as 'Gong moves Zhi' or 'Yu moves Jiao'. The original text '乙壬' should be a mistake for '乙丑'.
Earthly Branches and Five Tones System
The branch Zi belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Earth element, governing the emperor; Chou belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Fire element, governing drought, fire, palaces and temples, and disputes; Yin belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Fire element, governing drought, fire, and border beacon fires; Mao belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Water element, governing prolonged rain, water disasters, and fog; Chen belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Metal element, governing generals, officials, and soldiers; Si belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Wood element, governing illness and worries; Wu belongs to the Yang tone and is associated with the Earth element, governing concubines; Wei belongs to the Yin tone and is associated with the Fire element, governing common people, construction projects, insect plagues, imperial edicts, official documents, drought, and so on; Shen belongs to the Yin tone and is associated with the Fire element, governing postal services, low-ranking officials, drought, and fire; You belongs to the Yin tone and is associated with the Water element, governing frost and snow, thunder and lightning, prolonged darkness, and hail; Xu belongs to the Yin tone and is associated with the Metal element, governing subordinate officers and weapons; Hai belongs to the Yin tone and is associated with the Wood element, governing death and mourning. Mr. Li said: From Zi to Si, they are all generated by the Yin tone, so they are called Yang; from Wu to Hai, they are all generated by the Yang tone, so they are called Yin. This table assigns the twelve Earthly Branches to the five tones and elements, and each is associated with specific people and events. When wind blows from a certain branch's direction, it takes the affairs associated with that branch and the tone of the day's branch to cross-reference, thereby determining which person or event will be affected by calamity or fortune. The original text mistakenly has 'Wu' instead of 'Zi' in the phrase 'from Wu to Si'.
Five Sounds Interact Wind Divination
On a Palace Day, if the wind comes from the direction of the Zi or Wu palace tones, it is called "Palace Movement," indicating the monarch's journey. If the wind is sudden and strong, the monarch will hurry to travel, accompanied by urgent orders; if the wind is gentle and slow, the monarch will travel calmly, accompanied by joyful decrees. Using the Heavenly Stems, one can determine the distance and speed of the journey. On a Palace Day, if the wind comes from the direction of the Yang Palace, there may be mountain collapses, the monarch's journey, and events such as earthquakes, droughts, and construction projects; if the wind comes from the direction of the Yin Palace, there may be earthquakes or the queen's journey, also indicating droughts. It is also said that on a Yang Palace Day, if the wind comes from the Zi or Wu palace directions, it indicates the monarch's journey; on a Yin Palace Day, if the wind comes from the Zi or Wu palace directions, it indicates the queen's journey. On a Palace Day, if the wind comes from the Zi or Wu palace directions and the hour is precisely aligned with Zi or Wu, it is called "Double Palace." This indicates the monarch's desire to travel while ministers leave, and it also suggests irregular weather with wind and rain.
On a day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the four directions of the徵 tone, namely Chou, Wei, Yin, and Shen, it is called "Palace moves to徵," indicating a fire or candle disaster, earth and wood construction, appearance of treasures, and military affairs. If the hour also falls on the徵 position, it is called "double徵," indicating the mobilization of righteous forces, earth and wood construction, and imperial edicts being issued. Such wind is called "righteous wind." On a day of the Palace tone, if the wind comes from the directions of Mao and You, it is called "Palace moves to羽," indicating heavy rain; otherwise, it may mean the departure of ministers or, conversely, a drought. This is because the Palace tone belongs to the sovereign, and the羽 tone belongs to the ministers; when the sovereign is angry, the ministers will leave. The Palace tone belongs to earth, and the羽 tone belongs to water; when earth is strong, water weakens, and when water weakens, fire arises, thus leading to drought. If the hour also falls on the羽 position, it is called "double羽," followed by rain and the maturity of five grains.
On a day of the Palace Stem, if the wind comes from the directions of Chen and Xu, which are the Shang tones, it is called "Palace moves Shang," indicating that there will be military movements and the arrival of foreign troops. If the hour also coincides with Chen or Xu, it is called "double Shang," indicating military calamity. On a Palace Stem day, if the wind comes from the directions of Si and Hai, which are the Jue tones, it is called "Palace moves Jue," indicating military conflict, the ruler's worry, injury to enemy troops, and mourning. If the wind comes from the Yang Shang direction, there will be warfare at the borders and a great mourning. Palace belongs to earth and represents the ruler, while Jue belongs to wood. Earth moving against wood cannot control it, so the ruler faces misfortune; wood signifies crying, hence mourning. If the hour coincides with Si or Hai, it is called "double Jue," indicating the ruler's decline and a great mourning.
On a day of the Palace (宫日), if a strong wind blows from the乾 direction, it indicates heavy rain and flooding. If the wind does not carry dust, the weather is clear, the sun is bright, and the wind does not feel cold when it touches the body, then the country will issue good government orders. If the wind blows from the艮 direction, mountains and hills may collapse, the monarch will travel, there will be great flooding and the ground will crack. If the wind blows from the巽 direction, locusts will proliferate and harm the five grains. If the wind blows from the坤 direction, there will be construction projects and wild animals will cause disasters. All these predictions take effect only when the hour aligns with the palace position. On a day of徵, if the wind blows from the Yang palace direction, construction projects will start, there will be a great drought, and palace buildings, temples, and shrines will suddenly catch fire. If the wind blows from the Yin palace direction, the crown prince will fall ill. When the hour aligns with the徵 position, it is called 'double徵', indicating construction projects and fires.
On a day of wind signs, if the wind comes from the directions of Chou and Yin, which are yang wind directions, it indicates a fire disaster. The ruler will be frightened, wild animals will injure people, and many palaces and temples will be burned down. If the wind comes from the prosperous and strong directions, there will be a severe drought in that year, accompanied by many fires. If the wind comes from the directions of Wei and Shen, which are yin wind directions, the ruler will have worries, and wild animals will cause fires; another interpretation says that a large number of domestic animals will die. If the hour is combined with Chou, Yin, Wei, or Shen, it is called 'heavy wind'. The capital's four gates will be closed, precisely because of the fire. On a day of wind signs, if the wind comes from the yang merchant directions, there will be urgent military affairs, the ruler will flee, and will defend himself with his military strength, which will be verified within seven or seventy days. If the wind comes from the yin merchant directions, there will be urgent warfare; another interpretation says that if the wind comes from the yang merchant directions, the minister assisting the ruler will be arrogant, senior ministers will die, and the people will suffer. The original text mistakenly uses 'Ren Yin' for 'Chou'.
On a day of the徵 sign, if the wind comes from the direction of the yang feather, there will be affairs in the neighboring states, precious objects will appear, yin energy will overpower yang energy, and there will be thunder and lightning along with frost and hail. The princes and ministers will have many losses of position, and fires will occur frequently. If the wind comes from the direction of the yin feather, precious objects will appear and thunder will be frequent, and there will be affairs among the surrounding夷狄 tribes. On a day of the徵 sign, if the wind comes from the direction of the yang horn, there will be military affairs and urgent news from the borders. Originally, metal overcomes wood, but the offspring of wood is fire, which in turn overcomes metal, hence there will be military conflict and also mourning. If the wind comes from the direction of the yin horn, there will be a fire alarm at the borders. Another interpretation says: there will be large-scale military movements at the borders, and there will be mourning in spring.
On the day of the feather (a type of day in the Chinese calendar), if the wind comes from the direction of the Yang Palace, people carry goods and gather together, the sovereign issues orders to dispatch officials, military actions arise in distant regions, construction projects begin, generals receive orders to go to war, there are alliances and gatherings, and there is cold snow and hail. If the wind comes from the direction of the Yin Palace, there is severe cold that harms all things, there is flooding, construction projects, and gathering of troops and horses. On the day of the feather, if the wind comes from the direction of the Yang Palace (according to the context, this should be the Yang徵), there is military action within the country, urgent government orders, officials have worries, border passes and bridges are blocked, and roads are impassable; if the wind comes from the direction of the Yin徵, the garrisons on the borders have worries.
On a day of the Feather tone, the wind blows from the direction of the Feather tone, and there will be gatherings of people wearing white clothes, great mourning, severe cold, and hail. These events will occur within five or fifty days, and there will be heavy rain. If the rain comes from the south, the country will face troubles and many people will fall ill. If the rain comes from the north, bandits will gather in the water, and there will also be hail. For the Yang Feather tone, the event occurs during the day; for the Yin Feather tone, it occurs at night. On a Feather day, the wind blows from the direction of the Shang tone, with armies surrounding the city but not engaging in battle, urgent military situations at the borders, and bridges and passes blocked. Heavy rain falls from the sky, and the guest army is not favorable. Metal and water have a mother and son relationship, and they harmonize with each other, so there is no battle. The Feather water can nourish the Angle wood and eliminate its pests, just like a minister taking the place of the sovereign to punish rebels. Therefore, when this wind arises, there must be heavy rain, precisely because there is no battle.
On a feather day, the wind blows from the direction of the horn tone, indicating military actions at the border, enemy forces surrounding the city, and the city being breached; another interpretation is that the soldiers surrounding the city refuse to disperse. When the hour is added to the time of the snake (巳) or the pig (亥), it is called 'heavy horn,' indicating a siege and great mourning. On a commercial day, the wind blows from the direction of the yang palace, advising to warn the crown prince, avoiding angering the ministers, as there will be urgent military affairs. The palace belongs to earth, and commercial belongs to metal; earth is the mother of metal, so the mother worries for the son, hence it concerns the crown prince, also indicating the ruler's illness. If the wind blows from the direction of the yin palace, the庶 son will have worries, an urgent incident occurs, and military actions start from the north.
On a Yin day, the wind blows from the Sheng tone direction, the capital and towns receive orders, the army departs, the general is away, then the army returns without fighting, and the ministers act upon the order to move out. Sheng governs commands, Yin governs military affairs; Yin is conquered by Sheng, so the army retreats. Another interpretation is that there is a minor drought. When the hour is added to the Sheng position, it is called 'repeated Sheng,' which indicates fire and a major drought. On a Yin day, the wind blows from the Yu tone direction, heavy rain causes flooding, the harvest is poor, the country faces disorder, and military actions start in the east. Yu belongs to water, which is generated by metal, so there will be great military conflict and great water-related events.
On a day of the state of Shang, if the wind blows from the direction of the Yang Shang, there will be a gathering of people in plain clothes, and there will be great water, with roads and bridges blocked. A general will go to war and must be cautious of foreign troops. There will be small bands of bandits in the cities. The ruler will have worries, and the capital's four gates will be closed. Military affairs will be in the western direction. If the wind blows from the direction of the Yin Shang, the country will suffer great calamity, grain prices will rise, and there will be military conflict within the country. The wind will be fierce and angry, and the event will occur within seven or seventy days. There will be urgent government orders, and large-scale warfare will arise. The state of Shang belongs to metal, and two layers of metal energy are in operation, hence there will be great mourning. Another interpretation is that on a Shang day, if the wind blows from the direction of the Shang tone, it indicates the death of a high official.
On a day of the heavenly stem 商 (Shang), if the wind comes from the yang angle direction, there will be sudden military affairs and urgent government orders; if it comes from the yin angle direction, there will be funerals and construction projects. On a day of the heavenly stem 角 (Jue), if the wind comes from the yang palace direction, there will be internal rebellion, the sovereign will be anxious, and the capital's four gates will be closed; if it comes from the yin palace direction, there will be a great funeral, many nobles will suffer illness, and there will be construction projects. The palace tone represents the sovereign, and the angle tone represents death, hence there will be a great funeral.
The day of the horn (Jiao) is marked by wind blowing from the tone of Zheng (Zheng), indicating that high officials will suffer misfortune, and there should be vigilance against fires, pests, and rising grain prices. Another interpretation suggests that officials will exploit the people's resources, there will be military actions, and grain stored in granaries and treasures in storehouses will be lost. When the day of the horn is accompanied by wind from the tone of Yu (Yu), there will be heavy rain, construction projects in wood and earth will commence, military actions on the borders will occur, and officials of the rank of marquises and ministers will face disputes and illnesses, also indicating conflicts among the barbarian tribes.
The wind blowing from the direction of the Horn (Jue) and the Sun indicates urgent military affairs; another interpretation is that ministers are disloyal. If the wind comes from the direction of the Yang Horn, there will be military actions at the borders, the ruler will be anxious, there will be bandits attacking, and the fighting will not be successful, resulting in many casualties. If the wind comes from the direction of the Yin Horn, there will be military affairs and a great mourning. Another interpretation is that news of distant mourning arrives. If the hour is also aligned with the Horn position, there will be mourning, military conflicts at the borders, bandits everywhere, rising grain prices, people suffering from hunger, and many dead in the fields. The Horn tone is naturally associated with death and mourning, and when it coincides with 'double Horn' (reinforced Horn), the situation becomes particularly severe.

Divination by Rain
Rain is produced by the harmonization of yin and yang and the mutual interaction of the energies of heaven and earth. In a peaceful and clear era, there would be rain every ten days, and the rain would be gentle enough not to scatter soil blocks. Jing Fang said: when the world is at peace, there are thirty-six rains in a year, which is a good omen, indicating that the winds and rains of the four seasons respond appropriately to the seasons. Any continuous rain for three days or more is called "lin"; prolonged rain without stopping is called "yin."
Miscellaneous Divination
Heaven has no clouds yet it rains, called "heaven weeping," its divination indicates that the country will change its ruling power; if this occurs during a military campaign, that army will certainly not return. The Yellow River Chart says: if the sovereign is impetuous and prone to anger, then heaven will rain without clouds. The Baopuzi says: rain without clouds is called "rain of blood," the general should整顿 his troops and practice military affairs to deal with it; if the rain is heavy and especially severe within the camp, the general will suffer defeat and die. Jing Fang says: if the sovereign promotes those without virtue and takes this as a merit, then heaven will rain without clouds.
First Month of the Year
On the first day of the first lunar month, if there is wind and rain, by the third month the price of grain will rise; another interpretation says that if on the first day of the first lunar month there is a storm with wind and rain, the harvest of the year will be extremely poor; if there is only a light wind and rain, the harvest will be slightly poor; if the wind is mournful and wailing, diseases will occur and calamities will arise. Another saying states that if on the first day of the first lunar month there is wind and rain, the price of rice will rise and the silkworm breeding will suffer; if the wind and rain come from all directions, there will be military conflicts. If on the first day of the first lunar month there is only rain and no wind, the low-lying fields will have a good harvest of wheat, but the price of millet will be slightly higher. If it rains on a day of the卯 (Mao) branch in the first ten days of the first lunar month, the price of grain will double; if it rains on a day of the卯 (Mao) branch in the middle ten days, the price of grain will increase tenfold. If on the last day of the first lunar month wind and rain arrive at the same time, the price of grain will be high and the harvest of grain will be poor.

On the first day of the second lunar month, there is wind and rain, causing grain prices to rise and crops to be poor. On the second, seventh, eighth, and ninth days of the month, rain should come but does not, leading to people dying of starvation on the roads. If it does not rain from the ninth to the fifteenth days of the month, there will be military conflict. If it does not rain on the seventeenth and eighteenth days, insects will not hibernate even in winter. If it does not rain on the nineteenth and twentieth days, there will be a severe drought in March. If it does not rain from the twenty-sixth to the twenty-eighth days, there will be a wind from the east that damages crops and all things. On the last day of the second lunar month, if there is wind and rain, there will be many diseases and deaths.

On the first day of the third lunar month, if it rains, the well water dries up; on the second day, if it rains, the ponds and lakes have no remaining water; on the third day, if it rains, there is a loss of regularity between drought and rain; on the fourth day, if it rains, political changes are needed; on the fifth day, if it rains, the ditches and canals overflow; on the sixth day, if it rains, the walls and fences collapse; on the seventh day, if it rains, the embankments break; on the eighth day, if it rains, one should take a boat to travel; on the ninth day, if it rains, the disaster is unpredictable. If there is wind and rain on the first day of the third lunar month, the people will get sick, and various insects will proliferate; if there is thunder and rain on this day, there will also be drought. If it does not rain on the first to third days of the third lunar month, there will be much fog in autumn, and there will be people who die of starvation on the roads; if it does not rain on the seventh day, the price of grain will rise; if there is no rain from the ninth to fifteenth days, the military forces outside will return; if there is no rain from the eighteenth to twentieth days, horned insects and animals will die, and the people will be in fear. If there is no rain from the twenty-third to twenty-seventh days, the winter insects will not hibernate, and the people will get sick. If it rains on a day of the Dragon (Chen) in the third lunar month, all kinds of insects will proliferate; if it rains on a day of the Earth Dog (Wei), all kinds of insects will die. If it rains lightly on the third day of the third lunar month, the silkworm raising will be good; if it rains heavily, the silkworm raising will be bad. If it rains on the sixteenth day of the third lunar month, the price of mulberry and Chinese parasol trees will be low.

In spring, if it rains on Jiayin or Yimao days, the rainwater seeps into the ground five inches deep, and the price of grain slightly rises; if it does not rise at that time, it will definitely rise greatly in summer. If it rains during the days from Jiashen to Jichou, or from Gengyin to Guisi in spring, it indicates a significant rise in grain prices. If it rains on Jiashen day in spring, the year will have a bountiful harvest of grain. If there is no rain on Jiayin or Yimao days in spring, the people cannot plow. The original text 'ji ren' should be 'jichou'.

On the thirtieth day of the fourth month, rain was expected but did not come, leading to a great wind that would damage houses. If it rained on the fourth day of the fourth month, the price of grain would be high; if it rained on the fifth and sixth days, it would be favorable for wheat grown in dry land; if there was wind from the fourth to the seventh day, the soybeans would mature. If it rained on the last day of the fourth month, there would be a great famine by the first day of the fifth month, and this year there would be a great flood, a poor harvest of wheat, and an increase in locusts.

On the last day of the eighth lunar month (the day of darkness, "huì rì"), if there is wind and rain, there will be both floods and drought in the following year. Another saying states that if there is wind and rain on the first day of the ninth lunar month, there will be drought in spring and excessive rain in summer. If it is supposed to rain on the first day of the ninth lunar month but does not, frost will come early, killing crops and plants, causing the people to be so poor that they will abandon their wives and children. If it is supposed to rain on the twelfth day but does not, many people will die. If it is supposed to rain on the twentieth day but does not, there will be alarming events across the land. If on the last day of the ninth lunar month (the "晦日") there is wind and rain, there will be floods that year and a poor harvest.

Yet another says that if there is a heavy rain on the first day of the tenth month, the price of rice will rise sharply; if only a light rain, the price will rise slightly. If it rains on the second day of the tenth month, the price of sesame seeds will rise fivefold. If it is supposed to rain on the third day of the tenth month but does not, there will be military action in the northwest direction. If it is supposed to rain from the thirteenth to the fifteenth day of the tenth month but does not, there will be much strong wind and severe cold. If it is supposed to rain on the nineteenth day of the tenth month but does not, many children will fall ill. If it is supposed to rain on the twenty-fifth day of the tenth month but does not, this winter will be warm and with little water, and there will be plague for several consecutive years. If on the last day of the tenth month (the day of "Hui") there is wind and rain, the price of grain will rise fivefold, and many people will die.

From the eighth to the eleventh day of the month, rain was expected but did not come, leading to many deaths among nursing women. On the sixteenth day, rain was expected but did not come, resulting in many deaths among the people, with the poor becoming rich and the rich becoming poor, reversing their fortunes. On the last day of the eleventh month (the day of darkness), if there is wind and rain, there will be drought in the following spring, and grain prices will rise fivefold. Jing Fang said: if it rains in the eleventh month, there will be great flooding, and the whole country will suffer from famine. He also said: if there is heavy rain in winter that accumulates into floods, it is a sign that the king will die and the state will collapse.
Twelve Months
On the first day of the twelfth lunar month, there is wind and rain, and in the following spring there will be drought and heavy rain in the summer, causing grain prices to rise. On the second day and from the fourth to the sixth day, rain is expected but does not come, leading to a severe drought. From the ninth to the thirteenth day, rain is expected but does not come, resulting in much fog. On the twentieth day, rain is expected but does not come, causing a plague of horned insects that will harm crops. On the twenty-seventh day, rain is expected but does not come, resulting in strong winds and thunder. On the last day of the twelfth lunar month (the "晦日"), there is wind and rain, and in the following spring there will be drought.
In the winter, on the days of Renyin and Guimao, if it rains, the price of grain will rise greatly in the following spring. From Jiashen to Jichou, if it rains, the price of rice will go up. From Gengyin to Guisi, if there is wind and rain, the price of grain will be low, and those who stockpile and buy grain will suffer losses, meaning they will lose money due to the drop in price.
