甘氏曰：“熒惑書見，臣謀主。”韓楊曰：“熒惑出西方而逆行，是為反明，天下更王，國憂，受者亡；其南若北，為死喪；南為丈夫，北為女子。”《洛書》曰：“熒惑反明，邦命更王。熒惑反明，相掠所滅。熒惑反明，不言紀更。”《尚書緯》曰：“熒惑反明，白帝亡。”

"Zhoujian" means visible during the day, and "Fanming" refers to the planet appearing in the west instead of the east at dawn. The Gan school says: if the planet appears during the day (the original text mistakenly says "shu"), it indicates ministers plotting against the sovereign. Han Yang says: when the planet appears in the west and moves retrograde, this is called "Fanming," indicating a change of sovereign, national calamity, and the defeat of the country that bears this omen; if it deviates south or north, it signifies death and mourning—deviation to the south indicates death of a male, deviation to the north indicates death of a female. The Luo Writing says: when the planet appears in reverse, the country will change its sovereign. When the planet appears in reverse, there will be mutual plundering leading to destruction. When the planet appears in reverse, the era will change without announcement. The "Shangshu Wei" says: when the planet appears in reverse, the Western White Emperor lineage will perish.

《春秋緯》曰：“赤帝之世，有過則熒惑出，冠守、見萌以淫亂，失時則反明；有此類，則亡引也。”《文耀鉤》曰：“熒惑反明，主以悖更殘物之過亡，天下更紀，易其主。”（《元命包》曰：“殷紂無道，熒惑反明。”宋均注曰：反出西方也。）《天官書》曰：“熒惑反明，主命惡之。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑反明，怒氣結。”

The Spring Annals Commentary says: In the era when the Red Emperor was in charge, if the ruler made mistakes, the planet Mars would appear, surpassing the crown and guarding the position, revealing signs due to licentiousness; if it lost the proper sequence, it would appear as a bright star. Such celestial phenomena would provide an excuse for the downfall. The Literary Brightness Hook says: When Mars appears as a bright star, it indicates the ruler's failure to govern properly, causing harm to all things, leading to his downfall and a change in the era and ruler. The original commentary notes: The Yuan Ming Bao says "King Zhou of Yin was unjust, and Mars appeared as a bright star," and Song Jun explains that appearing as a bright star means it appears reversed in the west. The Star Official Book says: When Mars appears as a bright star, it is most ominous for the ruler's fate. The Jingzhou Divination says: When Mars appears as a bright star, it is caused by accumulated anger and resentment.

韓楊曰：“熒惑所止舍而數之七舍，而數為日七月，而入於西方；伏行五舍，為日五日，而得出於東方，其反出西方，是謂反明；天下更政，所宿其國伐。熒惑入西方，反出為反明；天下更王。熒惑有三反明，三吐舌；以威咎殺太子，以妾為妻。”京氏曰：“禮經不用，熒惑反明。”

Han Yang said: Starting from the star chamber where the planet Mars stops, count seven star chambers, which corresponds to seven months, and it will disappear into the west; if it hides and moves through five star chambers, which corresponds to five days, it will reappear in the east. If it appears from the west instead, this is called reverse brightness, indicating a change of government, and the country where it stays will be attacked. If Mars disappears into the west and then comes out from the west again, this is also reverse brightness, indicating a change of ruler. There are three forms of reverse brightness and three forms of tongue-like appearance, which indicate the monarch will punish the crown prince with severe punishment and promote a concubine to the position of wife. Jing Shi said: When the rites are abandoned, Mars will show reverse brightness.

《龍魚河圖》曰：“夫熒惑主司非，其精下為風伯之神。”巫咸曰：“熒惑下為童男，止於都市。”（《搜神紀》曰：“吳地草創之，信不堅固，邊屯守將質其兩女子，名曰保質。童子少年以類相與嬉遊者，日有十數。鳳皇三年三月、有一異兒、長四尺餘，年可六七歲，衣青，未從群嬉，諸兒莫之哀也；皆問‘爾誰家兒，今日忽來？’答曰：‘見爾群嬉樂，故來耳。’詳而視之，眼有光芒，焰焰若火，諸兒畏之，重問其故，兒乃答曰：‘爾惡我乎，我乃熒惑星也，將有一言告爾，天下歸司馬氏。’

The Longyu He Tu says: The planet Mars governs observation and discernment of right and wrong; its vital energy descending to earth becomes the deity of the wind. Wu Xian says: When Mars descends to the human world, it takes the form of a male child, and stays in the city. The following is a note from the original text, citing the Shoushen Ji: When the state of Sun Wu was established, people's faith and righteousness were not yet firm, and the garrison commanders in the border areas had to send two daughters as hostages, called "bao zhi." They would play with the children and youths who accompanied them, and every day there were dozens of them. In the third year of the Phoenix era of the last emperor of Wu, there was a strange child, over four feet tall, looking about six or seven years old, wearing blue clothes, who did not join the group of children playing, and the other children did not care for him. They asked him: "Who are you, why have you come suddenly today?" He replied: "I saw you playing and enjoying yourselves, so I came." Upon careful observation, his eyes shone with a bright light, like fire. The children were afraid of him, and repeatedly asked the reason. The child then said: "Do you dislike me? I am the planet Mars. I have a message to tell you: the world will belong to the Sima family."

諸兒大驚，或走告大人，馳往觀之：兒曰：‘爾舍去乎。’竦身而躍，即已化矣。仰而視之，若引匹練以登天，大人來有備及見馬，飄飄漸高；有頃而沒。時吳政峻急，莫敢害也。後五年而蜀亡，六年而晉興，至是而吳滅於司馬氏矣。”一書云：“熒惑卒不見，下地為人、衣韋衣、若白衣，乃使民多妖言。”）

The children were greatly surprised, and someone ran to tell the adults, who hurriedly came to watch. The child said, "Please step back." He then leaped up, and immediately transformed and disappeared. Looking up, it seemed as if he was dragging a white ribbon straight up into the blue sky. When the adults arrived, they still had time to see him floating upward, higher and higher, and in a short while he vanished. At that time, the state of Wu had strict and urgent laws, so no one dared to harm him. Later, five years after the fall of Shu Han, the Jin dynasty rose to power. Eventually, Wu was indeed destroyed by the Sima clan. The original book's marginal notes also cite another source, which says that the planet Mars suddenly disappeared, meaning it had descended to the earth and took human form, wearing leather clothing or white clothes, thus causing the people to spread false rumors.

京房《對災異》曰：“熒惑作變，為華州人君之禍也。弟於東，骨肉慾，暮近北，邊國謀入；於西，則兵大起，蠻貊戰；入斗，則大臣叛；住東西，萬民病，不救之，則致日食，既下謀上；其救也，設七政、爭正圖書；修經術，改惡為善；則安矣。”《運斗樞》曰：“人君政亂，朝多讒臣，則熒惑吐舌。”

Jing Fang's "Discourse on Catastrophes and Anomalies" says: When the planet Mars changes its position, it indicates calamity for the rulers of the various states of the Huaxia. If it appears low in the east, it signifies that the ruler's relatives have improper desires; if it approaches the north in the evening, it indicates that the border states intend to invade; if it appears in the west, there will be great military conflicts and barbarian attacks; if it enters the Big Dipper, there will be rebellion among the ministers; if it stops between the east and the west, the common people will fall ill. If no measures are taken to remedy this, it will lead to an eclipse of the sun, which indicates that those below are plotting against those above. The remedy is to properly observe the sun, moon, and five planets, to correct the official records and scriptures, to study the classics, and to change evil ways into good ones, thus achieving peace. The "Yun Dou Shu" says: When the ruler's governance is confused and there are many slanderous ministers in court, Mars will appear with a tongue.

京氏曰：“人君無禮法，輕薄房室，外行慢易遇下，不理賦斂，奪民時；則熒惑失度，吐舌為度，逆度作怪，以誡人君；不救則大旱，中火燔宮殿；其救也，追功、祿爵，位賢德，養幼孤，廩鰥寡；則熒惑還度，天心得矣。”韓楊曰：“熒惑吐舌，狀如星也；其舌上，則主憂，下則民愁。”《運斗樞》曰：“陽越度，陰失符，則熒惑生足。”（宋均曰：陽、君也、陰、臣也。）石氏曰：“熒惑生足，故主殃；新主易。”

The Jing school says: If the sovereign does not abide by propriety and law, treats the inner family affairs carelessly, is arrogant and neglectful towards his ministers, does not regulate taxation and levies, encroaches upon the peasants' farming time, then the planet Mars will move out of its proper course, appearing in the form of a tongue, violating the norm and producing strange phenomena, to warn the sovereign. If no corrective measures are taken, there will be a great drought, and there will also be fires that destroy palaces. The method of correction is: to recall meritorious officials, bestow salaries and titles, appoint virtuous people to positions, care for orphans and infants, and provide relief to widowers and widows; in this way, the planet Mars will return to its normal course, thus aligning with the will of Heaven. Han Yang says: When the planet Mars has a tongue, the shape of the tongue-like vapor resembles star rays; if the tongue points upward, it indicates the sovereign will have worries; if it points downward, it indicates the people will suffer hardship. The Yundoushu says: When Yang exceeds the limits, and Yin loses its sign, the planet Mars will produce a 'foot'. The original commentary cites Song Jun as saying: Yang refers to the sovereign, and Yin refers to the ministers. The Shi school says: When the planet Mars produces a foot, it signifies calamity, and a new sovereign will be established.

巫咸曰：“熒惑大而赤，東西南北行，非常也；一曰有謀，兵起。熒惑失其常，吏且棄其法，諸侯亂其政。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑始出大，而日愈小者，其國不利；始出小，而日愈大者，其國利。熒惑赤角，卒多不出，秋兵起。”

Wu Xian said: The planet Mars is very large and red, moving erratically in all directions, which is not normal; another interpretation suggests there is a conspiracy and military actions will arise. When Mars deviates from its normal course, officials will abandon laws and regulations, and the feudal lords will disrupt state affairs. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: When Mars first appears large and then becomes smaller day by day, the country will suffer misfortune; when Mars first appears small and then grows larger day by day, the country will be favorable. If Mars develops red horns, the soldiers will mostly remain inactive, and military actions will arise in the autumn.

又曰：“熒惑赤大，昭然而芒，其野有兵。熒惑大而赤角，有兵，兵出有功，戰客利；背之者大勝；逆之者大敗。勞惑色赤，大而角，軍大驚。”巫咸曰：“熒惑小名曰進賊；萬物相暴，從為賊；不有死王，必有滅國；使之不然，哀老弱，憐孤寡。”郗萌曰：“熒惑出東方，反行以西，有小星，擊之即去；所宿之國受兵。”

It is also said that the planet Mars appears red and large, shining brightly with a luminous glow. The region it corresponds to is prone to military conflicts. When Mars is large and has a red horn, it indicates military action, which can lead to military success, and the defending army will have the advantage. If the battle is fought against the direction Mars is facing, there will be a great victory; if fought towards the direction Mars is facing, there will be a great defeat. When Mars is red, large, and has a horn, it causes great disturbance within the army. Wu Xian said: When Mars becomes smaller, this is called 'the enemy advances'; all things mutually oppress and destroy each other, and subsequently there will be bandits and rebels. Either a king will die, or a country will be destroyed. To prevent this, one must show compassion to the elderly and the weak, and care for the orphans and the destitute. Xi Meng said: When Mars appears in the east and then moves westward, with small stars beside it, and if it is struck once and then departs, the country where it resides will suffer from military disaster.

《荊州占》曰：“兩敵相當，熒惑當其日而大，以其大之日利；當其日而小，以其小之日不利。上旬為陽國，中旬為中國，下旬為陰國。星大赤，則兵出有功；小赤，則無功；皆以其日占國。熒惑貫小星，殺小將。

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When two armies are facing each other, if the planet Mars appears large on a certain day, it is advantageous to fight on that day; if it appears small on a day, it is not advantageous to fight on that day. In the first half of the month, the battle should be in the country of the yang position; in the middle of the month, in the central country; and in the last half of the month, in the country of the yin position. If the star is large and red, going to war will result in success; if it is small and red, going to war will result in no success. The specific country where the battle should take place should be determined according to the stem and branch of that day. If the planet Mars passes by a small star beside it, it indicates the death of a subordinate general.

熒惑之陰，有小星，去四寸以內，諸侯陰謀。熒惑之陽，有小星，去四寸以內、諸侯有小兵。熒惑之傍，有小星兩，其一在南，一在北，皆四寸以內、諸侯從。熒惑之傍，有小星兩，其一在東，一在西，皆四寸以內，諸侯橫。熒惑小而赤角，兵出無功。”

The star Mars has a small star to its north within four inches; this indicates that the feudal lords are secretly plotting. Mars has a small star to its south within four inches; this indicates that the feudal lords have minor military conflicts. Mars has two small stars beside it, one to the north and one to the south, both within four inches; this indicates that the feudal lords are forming alliances. Mars has two small stars beside it, one to the east and one to the west, both within four inches; this indicates that the feudal lords are making a horizontal alliance. If Mars is small and has a red horn, it indicates that military campaigns will not achieve success.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑躍而沉浮，主用心悼憤。熒惑守列舍，浮跳不安；人主心邪，無剛政。”韓楊曰：“熒惑有宿星斗，不出三年，臣背其主，熒惑變色，逆行相凌而斗會舍還，其國無道。若與宿同光，國君出走。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars (Fenghuo) jumps and flickers, rising and falling suddenly, it indicates the ruler is suffering from inner sorrow and resentment. If Mars remains in a particular star mansion, moving about restlessly and unable to settle, it suggests the ruler is untrustworthy, and his decrees cannot be firm and decisive. Han Yang says: When Mars contends with the star of its current mansion, the country will suffer a rebellion by ministers against the ruler within three years. If Mars changes color, moves retrograde, and contends with another star, meeting in one mansion and then turning back, that country is one ruled by an unjust sovereign. If Mars shares the same color as the star of its current mansion, it indicates the ruler will flee.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑生氣，如為赤穰者，明日大暑，至夕時而大雨。熒惑出穰氣，長一丈，有百日旱。”《孝經內記》曰：“熒惑黑赤，氣為赤穰者，不出五月，有賊；三十日，有兵；五十日，旱，魚鹽貴，二倍自止。”

"The 'Rang qi' is a miscellaneous vapor that appears fluffy and piled up like straw stalks. The 'Yellow Emperor's Divination' states: when the planet Mars emits a vapor, it appears as a red pile of straw, and on the next day it becomes extremely hot, and by evening there is heavy rain. If Mars emits a 'Rang qi' that extends for a length of ten feet, it indicates a drought lasting one hundred days. The 'Inner Record of the Book of Filial Piety' says: when Mars has a dark red color, the vapor it produces forms a red pile of straw, and within five months there will be bandits; within thirty days there will be military affairs; within fifty days there will be a drought, with the prices of fish and salt rising to double their usual levels, and the price increase will stop on its own."

甘氏曰：“兩軍相當，而雲掩熒惑，必有覆軍，若將死；其出入進退以戰，背之大勝，迎之大敗。”郗萌曰：“兩軍相當，雲厚掩熒惑，必有逐軍。”巫咸曰：“熒惑白暈，大臣背其主；其角也，兵；氣赤色也，國有憂。”郗萌曰：“熒惑出彗東南維，其下受亡地，不出三年。”

The Gan school says: When two armies face each other, if the red star (Manghuo) is obscured by clouds, there will certainly be the loss of troops or the death of a general; when fighting during the movement of the red star, if you attack from the direction opposite to it, you will achieve a great victory, but if you attack from the direction it faces, you will suffer a great defeat. Xi Meng says: When two armies face each other, if the red star is completely hidden by thick clouds, there will certainly be the pursuit and expulsion of troops. Wu Xian says: If there is a white halo around the red star, it indicates that a minister will betray his sovereign; if there is a horn-like projection on the halo, it indicates military affairs; if the cloud is red in color, it indicates internal troubles in the country. Xi Meng says: If the red star emits a comet-like cloud in the southeast sky region, the area under its influence will lose territory, and this will come to pass within three years.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑犯左角，都尉死之。”《陳卓占》曰：“熒惑犯角，赦期一月。”石氏曰：“熒惑犯左右角，大人憂；一曰有兵，大臣為亂。”甘氏曰：“熒惑入左角，有大赦；入右角，兵大起。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑出角，中道，天下太平；出陽道，旱；陰道，多雨。”陳卓曰：“熒惑出角陰道，多陰道。”郗萌曰：“熒惑出入天門間，宮門移。”又占曰：“熒惑逆行角，失火。”

The two stars of Jiao Xu are the horn of the Azure Dragon and also the gate in the sky. The left horn governs legal affairs and punishment, while the right horn governs generals commanding troops. The area between the two horns is called "Heaven's Gate." The "Jingzhou Divination" states that if the planet Mars approaches the left horn, the commander of the garrison will die. The "Chen Zhuo Divination" says that if Mars approaches the horn mansion, there will be a proclamation of amnesty, and this will occur within a month. The Shi school says that if Mars approaches both the left and right horns, there will be worries for high officials; another account says there will be military affairs and rebellion by high ministers. The Gan school says that if Mars enters the left horn, there will be a great amnesty; if it enters the right horn, there will be large-scale military conflicts. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" states that if Mars exits from the central part of the horn mansion, called Heaven's Gate, the whole country will be peaceful; if it exits from the southern yang path, there will be drought; if it exits from the northern yin path, there will be much rain. Chen Zhuo says that if Mars exits from the northern yin path of the horn mansion, there will be excessive damp and rainy weather. Xi Meng says that if Mars enters and exits between Heaven's Gate, there will be a relocation of palace gates. Another divination says that if Mars moves retrograde in the horn mansion, there will be a fire.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑逆行角中，成勾已，若環繞之，人主憂，有兵喪，若關梁不通，期六月。”郗萌曰：“熒惑起角，刺如鋒刃，經角間；三十日而三留之，人主無下殿出宮，廓廟間有伏陣兵。”又曰：“熒惑赤色、光芒，居天門中，三十日，天下有大徵發，男年十五至耄老，三年乃止；或曰三月。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars is in the Horn mansion and moves retrograde, winding into a hook shape, or circling around the Horn mansion, the sovereign will have worries, there will be military affairs and funerals, or there will be blockades at passes and bridges, and this will occur within six months. Xi Meng says: Mars appears with a sharppointed rays, like a knife edge, moving between the two horns; it stays there three times within thirty days, and the sovereign must not go down from the palace or leave the court, because there are hidden troops arranged in formation in the halls. It also says: When Mars appears red and luminous, and stops in the Heavenly Gate, there will be large-scale conscription throughout the country within thirty days, conscripting men from fifteen years old up to the elderly, and this will last for three years; some say it lasts for three months.

郗萌曰：“熒惑起芒角，赤色而光，守天門中，二十日飢；一曰小旱。又曰：熒惑過兩角，多雨。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑成鉤已，環繞角，有芒如鋒刃，天子失位。”郗萌曰：“熒惑乘左角，為旱；乘右角，為兵，為水。”又曰：“乘陵左右角者，為日蝕，國有大變。”石氏曰：“熒惑乘右角，后族家若將相有坐法死者。”又占曰：“熒惑與角合，韓相出走。”

Xi Meng said: The planet Mars appears with a bright horn, red in color and shining, staying in the middle of the Heavenly Gate, which indicates a famine within twenty days; another interpretation says it signifies a minor drought. He also said: When Mars crosses over the two horns, it indicates much rain. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Mars forms a hook shape and moves around the Horn mansion, its horns are sharp like a knife, indicating the emperor losing his position. Xi Meng said: When Mars attacks the left horn, it indicates drought; when it attacks the right horn, it indicates military affairs and water disasters. He also said: When Mars attacks and suppresses both left and right horns, it indicates an eclipse of the sun and major disturbances in the country. The Shi school said: When Mars attacks the right horn, it indicates that someone from the imperial family or among the ministers will die due to breaking the law. Another divination says: When Mars combines with the Horn mansion, it indicates the chancellor of the State of Han will flee.

《河圖》曰：“熒惑居角陽，其國有喜；居陰，有憂。”郗萌曰：“熒惑居角亢間及太微宮，臣有請兵於天子者；若去復還，居角亢之間，天子聽之，兵且起。”又占曰：“熒惑大反行，留角，國受殃及加兵。”又曰：“色黑為疾、為死，青為水、為飢。”又占曰：“熒惑反行，留角三十日，萬家邑拔，千家邑虜；既居之，南北去之，其邑不可用兵；進為兵，退為喪。”

The Yellow River Chart says: If the planet Mars is located to the south of the Horn mansion, the country will experience joy; if it is located to the north, there will be calamity. Xi Meng says: If Mars is located between the Horn mansion and the Neck mansion and also within the Taiwei palace, it indicates that ministers will request the emperor to dispatch troops. If Mars departs and then returns again, still located between the Horn and Neck mansions, the emperor will agree, and military actions will arise. Another divination says: If Mars greatly retrogrades and remains stationed in the Horn mansion, the country will suffer disaster and be attacked by military force. It also says: If Mars is black in color, it signifies disease and death; if it is green in color, it signifies flooding and famine. Another divination says: If Mars retrogrades and remains stationed in the Horn mansion for thirty days, a city of ten thousand households will be captured, and a city of a thousand households will be plundered. Once it has stayed there, if it moves either south or north and departs, those cities should not be attacked. If Mars moves forward, it indicates military action; if it retreats, it indicates mourning.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑行廷中，不止；有大獄。”巫咸曰：“熒惑舍天門，人主絕祀。”郗萌曰：“熒惑舍天門中，大赦；又曰：入天門，出復反之，天下大亂；守，反者，事大。”《春秋文曜鉤》曰：“奪民時，熒惑守左角。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑守左角，有喪；色白，為兵，黃為土功；赤為旱；青、憂，黑死。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守左角，臣謀其主。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars moves continuously within the Heavenly Court, it indicates major legal disputes. Wu Xian says: When Mars stops at the Heavenly Gate, it signifies the extinction of the ruler's ancestral sacrifices. Xi Meng says: When Mars stops within the Heavenly Gate, it indicates the issuance of a great amnesty; also, if Mars enters the Heavenly Gate, exits, and then returns, there will be great chaos; if it remains and then returns again, the situation will be even worse. The *Chunqiu Wenyaogou* says: When the ruler encroaches upon the peasants' farming time, Mars will stay at the Left Angle. The *Haizhong Divination* says: When Mars stays at the Left Angle, it indicates mourning events; if it appears white, it signifies military affairs; if yellow, it indicates earth and wood construction work; if red, it indicates drought; if green, it indicates worries; if black, it indicates death. Xi Meng says: When Mars stays at the Left Angle, it indicates ministers plotting against their ruler.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守左角，兵起，將軍死之，期六十日，若六月。”又曰：“縑繒倍價。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守右角，有兵起，期三月，將死。”又占曰：“熒惑守左右角，左右校尉都尉若相當之，或戮死。”又占曰：“熒惑守兩角間，若軫道絕，出其陰，陰伐利，戰勝，取其將。”又占曰：“熒惑守角，三十日其後憂。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars stays near the left horn mansion, it indicates the outbreak of military affairs, and a general will die as a result; the time of occurrence is either sixty days or six months. It also says: The price of fine silk and cloth will double. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: When Mars stays near the right horn mansion, it indicates the outbreak of military affairs, and the time of occurrence is three months, with the death of a general. Another divination says: When Mars stays near both the left and right horn mansions, it indicates that officials such as left and right commanders, military officers, or those of equivalent rank will suffer misfortune, possibly even being executed. Another divination says: When Mars stays in the area between the two horn mansions, if the path to the chariot mansion is cut off and Mars emerges from the north, then the side in the yin position will have the advantage and will be able to defeat and capture the enemy's general. Another divination says: When Mars stays near the horn mansion, there will be worries thirty days later.

Another divination passage says: When the planet Mars stays at the Horn mansion, if it emerges from the southern side of the Horn mansion, it indicates the spread of diseases; if it emerges from the northern side, it indicates many deaths; if it moves to the right, the central states will suffer calamities; if it moves to the left, the coastal states will suffer calamities. Another passage says: When Mars passes through or stays at the left and right horns, it indicates a great battle. The Luo Writing says: When Mars stays at the Horn mansion, it indicates that there are rebellious plots in the states, and thus armies will be raised. The Spring Annals Weave says: When Mars stays at the Horn mansion, or turns back and remains there for twenty days, it indicates the death of the prime minister. The Shi school says: When Mars stays in the middle of the heavenly gate for twenty days, it indicates a great mourning in the state, or a plot against the ministers, which will occur within a year.

又占曰：“熒惑守左角，左將軍憂；守右角，右將軍憂，去復還，守之二十日，將軍戮死。”又占曰：“熒惑居守角三月，有殃；五月，受兵；七月，其野亡。”又占曰：“熒惑守角，霸者爭土，農者爭犁，聖人出，二十日大貴。”又占曰：“熒惑入天門，已去復反，守天門，關梁不通，進以善事，則亡。”

Another divination passage says: If the planet Mars stays at the left horn mansion, the general on the left will have worries; if it stays at the right horn mansion, the general on the right will have worries; if it leaves and then returns, staying for twenty days, the general will be executed. Another passage says: If Mars resides and stays at the horn mansion for three months, there will be calamity; for five months, there will be military disaster; for seven months, that region will suffer defeat. Another passage says: If Mars stays at the horn mansion, it indicates that hegemonic princes will fight over land, peasants will compete for plows, and a sage will emerge, gaining great prestige within twenty days. Another passage says: If Mars enters the heavenly gate, leaves and then returns, staying at the heavenly gate without departing, it indicates that passes and bridges will be blocked; at this time, if good governance is presented to heaven, the disaster can be avoided.

甘氏曰：“熒惑守角，忠臣誅，國政危。”又占曰：“熒惑守左角，延尉有憂；守右角，太尉有憂。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑守左右角，其色黃白，小旱，民小厲。”又占曰：“熒惑守左右角，逆行為旱；還立雨，為五穀不收。”又占曰：“熒惑守角，貴人子有繫者；去獄之天牢，貴人子赦。”又占曰：“熒惑起芒角，赤色而光，久守天門，王者絕嗣；各以占其國。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars stays at the Horn mansion, it indicates that a loyal minister will be executed, and the state affairs will be in danger. Another divination says: When Mars stays at the left horn, the official in charge of legal affairs will have worries (the original text mistakenly writes 'Yan' instead of 'Ting'); when it stays at the right horn, the official in charge of military affairs will have worries. The "Sea Divination" says: When Mars stays at both left and right horns, if the color is yellow or white, it indicates a minor drought and some epidemic among the people. Another divination says: When Mars stays at both left and right horns and movesretrograde, it indicates drought; if it turns back and rains soon after, it indicates poor harvest of grain. Another divination says: When Mars stays at the Horn mansion, it indicates that the nobleman's sons will be imprisoned; if it leaves the prison star and moves toward the Heavenly Prison, the nobleman's sons will be pardoned. Another divination says: When Mars has apointed rays, red in color and shining, and stays long at the heavenly gate, it indicates that the king will have no descendants; each region should be analyzed according to its territory to determine which country it applies to.

郗萌曰：“熒惑守左角，若右角，去復還之，天子行誅伐，期年中。”又占曰：“熒惑守左角，左將軍；右角，右將軍；守角前，前將軍；守角後，後將軍；一周五將軍發。”又占曰：“熒惑守角，讒臣欲進，政事急，有千里之行。”又曰：“將軍有亂，有兵兵罷。又曰大旱。”

Xi Meng said: When the planet Mars stays near the left horn or the right horn, and then departs and returns, it indicates that the emperor will carry out military campaigns. This omen should occur within a year. Another divination says: When Mars stays near the left horn, it indicates the left general will be involved; when it stays near the right horn, the right general will be involved; when it is before the horn mansion, the front general will be involved; when it is after the horn mansion, the rear general will be involved; when it circles around, all five generals will take action. Another divination says: When Mars stays near the horn mansion, it indicates that a minister who spreads slander will be promoted, affairs will be urgent, and there will be journeys over a thousand miles. It also says: There will be disturbances among the generals, although there may be military actions, they will ultimately end without further conflict. It also indicates a great drought.

又曰：“熒惑守角，為中兵大臣；留兩角間，將興國，廷開梁，邊境不通。”又占曰：“熒惑守東關，赦期一月。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守天陳，大飢，太后族人有受誅者。”又曰：“以夏三月中守角，若出角入角，中外不通。”

It is also said that when the planet Mars stays in the Horn mansion, it indicates a minister who controls the military power within the palace; if it remains between the two horns, it signifies a general who will establish a new state, the court will open bridges, but the borders will remain blocked. Another divination says: when Mars stays at the Eastern Gate star, it indicates the issuance of an amnesty, and the period will be one month. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: when Mars stays at Tian Chen, it indicates a great famine, and members of the empress dowager's family will be executed. It is also said that if Mars stays in the Horn mansion during the three summer months, or if it moves out from the Horn mansion and then returns, it indicates that communication within and outside the court will be cut off.

《二十八宿山經注》曰：“熒惑守角亢，其色赤，不出三年，則韓國王死。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守角，西為父母，後為妻，前為子，東為身；如此者，臣弒君；近一年，中二年，運五年。”石氏曰：“熒惑守犯凌左角，為禍咎。”

The "Commentary on the Twenty-Eight Mansions and Mountains" says: When the planet Mars stays near the mansion of Horn and the mansion of Neck, and appears red, the king of the state of Han will die within three years — for Horn and Neck are the celestial regions corresponding to Han. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: When Mars stays near the mansion of Horn, according to directional correspondence: the west corresponds to parents, the back corresponds to wife, the front corresponds to sons and daughters, and the east corresponds to oneself; when this celestial phenomenon occurs, it indicates that a minister will kill the king; the near occurrence lasts one year, the medium occurrence lasts two years, and the distant occurrence lasts five years (the original text mistakenly writes 'distant' as 'movement'). The Shi school says: When Mars stays near, collides with, or harasses the left horn, there will be calamity and misfortune.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑入亢，有芒角，犯凌之，當有白衣之會，糴大貴。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入亢，天子廷有兵，有水。”《東官候》曰：“熒惑入右亢，謂北星也天下有白衣之期，五穀不熟。”石氏曰：“熒惑數入亢，其國疾病疫。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入亢，成鉤已，環繞之，有亡國，必有臣謀主。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：魏喜平三年十月癸未，熒惑犯亢南星，正元三年二月，李豐等謀亂，誅。）

The four stars of Kangle are located east of the Horn mansion, representing the inner court of the Son of Heaven, also known as the shrine of mourning, governing plague and punishment. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: if the planet Mars enters Kangle, accompanied by a bright halo and attacking it, there will be mourning gatherings and a sharp rise in grain prices. Xi Meng says: if Mars enters Kangle, there will be rebellion within the Son of Heaven's court and floods. The Eastern Officials' Observations say: if Mars enters the northern star of Kangle, it indicates a period of mourning across the land and failure of crops. The Shi school says: if Mars repeatedly enters Kangle, the country will suffer from widespread disease and plague. Xi Meng also says: if Mars enters Kangle and forms a hook-like shape around it, there will be the downfall of the state and certain ministers plotting against the ruler. The following is a note from the original text, citing the "Book of Song · Astronomical Records": in the third year of Wei's Jiaping (the original text mistakenly writes "Ji" as "Xi"), on theGuiwei day of the tenth lunar month, Mars attacked the southern star of Kangle; later, in the second year of Zhengyuan, Li Feng and others plotted rebellion and were executed.

石氏曰：“熒惑十二月入龍宿，成鉤已，若環繞之，天子朱廷。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑逆行亢，主成咸，非其人。”陳卓曰：“熒惑乘亢右星，為大兵，為水，為穀貴。”郗萌曰：“熒惑乘滅亢左星，為大人憂；乘右星，為天下奇令。”《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑與亢合、主命凶。”《河圖》曰：“熒惑居亢陽，其國有喜；居陰、有憂。”

The Shi school says: When the planet Mars enters the mansion of the Azure Dragon in the twelfth lunar month, it coils into a hook shape or circles around it, indicating that the court of the emperor will be stained with blood. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When Mars moves backward in the mansion of Kangle, it indicates that things accomplished will fall into the hands of those who are not entitled. Chen Zhuo says: When Mars overshadows the star to the right of Kangle, it indicates great military conflicts, floods, and high grain prices. Xi Meng says: When Mars overshadows and obscures the star to the left of Kangle, it indicates that a senior official will have worries; when it overshadows the star to the right, it indicates that extraordinary commands will appear throughout the land. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: When Mars combines with Kangle, it indicates that the ruler's fate will be ominous. The "Yellow River Chart" says: When Mars is located to the south of Kangle, the country will have good fortune; when it is located to the north, there will be misfortune.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑留亢，天子惡之。”郗萌曰：“熒惑留廷中，為天下大憂，或曰為焦旱，物不生，多蟲蝗起。”又占曰：“熒惑舍亢，為歲有小水。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑以八月守亢，兩將相當，在東南，期一歲。”（石氏曰：期歲中。）又曰：“平地出水，橋樑不通，河內將相憂。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the planet Mars remains in the mansion of the Neck, the Son of Heaven should avoid this celestial phenomenon. Xi Meng says: When Mars remains in the Heavenly Court, it indicates great worries throughout the realm; some also say it signifies intense drought, with crops failing and locusts emerging in great numbers. Another divination passage states: When Mars remains in the mansion of the Neck, it foretells a minor flood in that year. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: When Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck in August, it indicates two generals facing each other in battle, the event occurring in the southeast direction, with the fulfillment expected within a year (the original commentary notes: the Shi school says the fulfillment occurs within a year). It also says: It indicates great water rising from flat land, bridges breaking and becoming impassable, and officials in the river region facing worries.

甘氏曰：“熒惑守亢，天下大樂，民得封爵，期不出年。”甘氏曰：“熒惑守亢東，天下州占；守西，木果不實。”又占曰：“熒惑守亢，五穀不熟，民死之。”又曰：“守疏廟，有土事；又守天門，有憂。”巫咸曰：“熒惑守亢，小臣為亂，臣疾疫。”又曰：“兵大起，天下旱，萬物不成。”

The Gan school says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates great joy throughout the world, and the people will receive rewards and titles, and this prediction will come true within the same year. The Gan school also says: When Mars stays to the east of the Neck mansion, all the states should use this to make predictions; when it stays to the west, it indicates that trees will not bear fruit. Another divination says: When Mars stays in the Neck mansion, it indicates that the five grains will not mature, and people will die because of it. It also says: When Mars stays near the ancestral temple, there will be construction projects; when it stays near the heavenly gate, there will be worries and troubles. Wu Xian says: When Mars stays in the Neck mansion, it indicates that minor officials will rebel, and there will be an epidemic among the ministers. It also says: There will be great military actions, the whole country will suffer from drought, and all things will not mature.

《海中占》曰：“熒惑守亢，天下有白衣之會，天子易政，道路不通。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑地亢，成鉤已而環繞之，三十日，天子自將兵，國易主。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守亢，環繞之成鉤已，天子惡之，期六月若十月。”又占曰：“熒惑守亢，大將有喜，守亢左左，將軍有喜。”

The Sea of Divination says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that there will be mourning gatherings throughout the country, the Son of Heaven will change his policies, and roads will be blocked. The Sea of Divination also says: When Mars reaches the mansion of the Neck (the original text mistakenly writes 'earth' instead of 'reach'), it coils into the shape of a hook and surrounds it. Within thirty days, the Son of Heaven will personally lead troops, and the country will replace its ruler. Xi Meng says: When Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck and coils around it in the shape of a hook, the Son of Heaven will be wary of this celestial phenomenon, and the predicted time will be six or ten months. Another divination says: When Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that a general will have good fortune; when Mars stays in the left side of the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that the general will have good fortune (the original text repeats the word 'left').

又占曰：“熒惑守亢，五穀以水傷敗。”又占曰：“熒惑守亢，為天下大旱，多火災；逆行為失火。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守亢，西為父母，後為妻，前為子，東為身；如此者，臣弒主，近一年，中二年，遠五年。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守亢，貴人病亡；一曰留十日，後忌。”又占曰：“熒惑守亢，天子有祠廟之事；又曰天下病頭。”

Another divination text says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that grain will be flooded and damaged. Another divination text says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it signifies a great drought across the land and frequent fires; if it moves backward, it indicates loss of fire. The Yellow Emperor's divination says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it corresponds to different directions: west indicates parents, back indicates wife, front indicates children, and east indicates oneself; when this celestial phenomenon occurs, it foretells that ministers will kill the sovereign, with the event happening within one year, medium term two years, and distant term five years. Xi Meng says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that a nobleman will die from illness; another interpretation says it remains for ten days, after which there should be increased caution. Another divination text says: When the planet Mars stays in the mansion of the Neck, it indicates that the sovereign will have rituals in the ancestral temple; another interpretation says it indicates that many people in the land will suffer from head diseases.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑色黑守亢旬日，水萬里不測；二旬，有沒王；三旬，澤海；又曰赦。”《東官候》曰：“熒惑守亢，國糴貴，芒角犯凌，有白衣之眾暴聚，麻麥載倍價。”又占曰：“熒惑守亢，大人憂之，若水船急，若民憂，非一國也，政危；守之三十日，民多疾。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the Malefic of violence appears black and remains stationed in the mansion of "Kang" for ten days, there will be a great flood, extending for ten thousand li, with depth and shallowness indeterminate; if it stays for twenty days, the sovereign will die; if it stays for thirty days, the land will sink and become lakes, marshes, and seas. Another account says there will be an amnesty. "Kang" is the second mansion of the Seven Northern Stars of the Azure Dragon in the East, governing court rituals and epidemics, so when the Malefic of violence is stationed there, it often indicates floods, droughts, and epidemics. The *Dongguan Divination* says: When the Malefic of violence guards the mansion of "Kang," the grain prices in the country will rise sharply; if the star's rays are sharp and it invades and harasses the mansion of "Kang," there will be sudden gatherings of people in mourning clothes, and the prices of hemp and wheat will double. Another divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards "Kang," the high-ranking officials will be anxious, their urgency like a boat in danger on the water; or the common people will suffer, and more than one vassal state will be affected, leading to a perilous political situation; if it stays for thirty days, there will be many diseases among the people.

又占曰：“熒惑入守亢，天子有所治宗廟之事，赦解之。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑逆行，守亢，為中兵。”郗萌曰：“熒惑犯守亢，逆行不順，失其明色，大政不用。”郗萌曰：“熒惑犯守亢，天下病斗。”《東官候》曰：“熒惑犯守亢，二十日而去，五穀不登，大人憂，亂臣在朝，忠臣不進。”

Another divination passage says: When the Malefic of violence enters and stays at the Neck mansion, the sovereign will have matters concerning the renovation of ancestral temples, and a proclamation of amnesty can be used to resolve it. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence moves逆行 and stays at the Neck mansion, it indicates the outbreak of military conflict in the central plains. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at the Neck mansion, its movement is disorderly and against the norm, and it also loses its proper bright light, indicating that the state's major policies cannot be implemented. Xi Meng also says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at the Neck mansion, the people suffer from the calamity of mutual strife and killing. The Eastern Officials' Observation says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at the Neck mansion, after twenty days it departs, and the five grains cannot mature, the person in high position has worries, rebels are in power, and loyal and upright ministers are not appointed.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑犯氐左星，左中郎將誅死；右星，右中郎將誅死；皆期三年。”甘氏曰：“熒惑入天子宮，天子失其宮。郗萌曰：“熒惑守亢，還入氐中，三十日，大人當之，其遠氐者，將大病；在氐南行，國有小喪；在其陽者，男；在其陽者，女。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: If the Malefic of violence invades the left star of the Root mansion, the Left Middle Commander-in-Chief in charge of palace guards will be executed and die; if it invades the right star, the Right Middle Commander-in-Chief will be executed and die; the time when these prophecies come true is within three years. The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the mansion of the Son of Heaven's palace—the Root mansion is originally the place where the Son of Heaven resides, his harem dwells, and he rests—the Son of Heaven will lose his palace. Xi Meng says: If the Malefic of violence first stays at the Neck mansion, then turns back and enters the Root mansion, remaining there for thirty days, calamity or misfortune will befall the person in high position; if the Malefic of violence is far from the Root mansion, the generals and officers will suffer serious illness; if it moves south of the Root mansion, there will be minor deaths in the country; if it appears in the southern part (the yang position) of the Root mansion, it will affect men. The original text still reads 'in its yang position' and associates it with women, which should be a mistake, and it should be 'in its yin position,' meaning that if it appears in the yin position (the northern part), it will affect women.

甘氏曰：“熒惑入氐，留守二十日，不下，當有賊臣有內；下，有反者。（案班固《天文志》曰：孝宣地節元年正月辛酉，熒惑入氐，其四年將軍霍禹、范明友及奉車霍山諸昆弟嬪婚為侍中，諸曹九卿郡守皆謀反伏誅，其應也。）三十日不下，其國兵起，人主當之，氐為天子之宮，罰星入之，不祥之徵，所守之國，其君死之。”

The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Root mansion and stays there for twenty days without descending, there will be a treacherous minister secretly hidden within the palace; if it then descends, there will be people who rise up in rebellion. According to the notes in the original text: According to Ban Gu's Records of the Grand Historian: Heavenly Phenomena, in the first month of the first year of Dijie of Emperor Xuandi of the Han dynasty, on the Xinyou day, the Malefic of violence entered the Root mansion; by the fourth year of Dijie, General Huo Yu, Fan Mingyou, and Fu Che Duwei Huo Shan, along with other brothers of the Huo family, who had married into the imperial family, held positions as attendants, and together with various officials, governors, and ministers, conspired against the emperor and were executed, which was the fulfillment of that heavenly phenomenon. If the Malefic of violence remains for thirty days without descending, then military conflicts will arise in the region corresponding to the Root mansion, and the calamity will fall upon the sovereign. The Root mansion is the palace of the Son of Heaven, and the Malefic of violence is the star of punishment. When the star of punishment enters the palace of the Son of Heaven, it is an ominous sign. Any country that the star of punishment stays in will have its ruler die as a result.

石氏曰：“熒惑入氐，留二十日，有一國君繫飢死，若毒死者。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入天門，至氐前時退，人主無出廓廟間，無出國，無之遠宮，其間有伏陣之兵。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入氐宿，留之二十日，在發卒戰；近期三十日，中期六十日，遠期百日。”

The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Root mansion, and stays for twenty days, there will be a king imprisoned and dying of starvation, or killed by poison. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence enters the 'Heavenly Gate' (the passage between the two stars of the Horn mansion), and before reaching the Root mansion it retreats, the monarch should not leave the inner court, should not depart from the capital, and should not go to distant palaces, because there are soldiers stationed in ambush along the way. The Jiangzhou Divination says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Root mansion and stays there for twenty days, there will be conscription of soldiers for warfare; within thirty days it will be fulfilled, in the middle case within sixty days, and in the distant case within a hundred days.

又占曰：“熒惑以戊辰歲，鉤已入氐，犯西南東北星，光合者，到巳己歲，大將軍誅，大赦天下。”又占曰：“熒惑出東方，若西方，留氐者，天子軍也；去復還居之，天子坐之。”巫咸曰：“熒惑逆行氐，失火；一曰守氐，多火災。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑逆行氐，地動。”

Another divination says: When the Malefic of violence is in the year Wuchen, it enters the Root mansion with a 'hooking Ji' movement (first moving in a smooth direction then reversing, moving back and forth like a hook), and invades the Southwest and Northeast stars of the Root mansion. The light of the star coincides with it. Then in the year Jisi, the Grand General will be executed, followed by a general amnesty. Another divination says: When the Malefic of violence appears in the East or West and stays in the Root mansion, the Son of Heaven will personally lead the army; if it departs and then returns to occupy the Root mansion, the Son of Heaven will be implicated in wrongdoing. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence moves retrograde in the Root mansion, there will be a fire; another view says when the Malefic of violence guards the Root mansion, fires will occur frequently. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence moves retrograde in the Root mansion, there will be an earthquake.

郗萌曰：“熒惑乘氐之左星，天子自將兵於野，一曰天下有大水、大兵。”又占曰：“熒惑出入留舍氐，五十日不下，天下大疾；一曰二十日不下，五月有病。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑出入留舍氐十日，其君當之。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守氐，成鉤己者，大人憂。”（甘氏曰：赦，期六日。）

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence is passing over the left star of the Root mansion, the Son of Heaven will personally lead his troops to campaign in the outskirts; another interpretation says there will be great floods and great military calamities. Another divination says: When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, and remains in the Root mansion for fifty days without descending, there will be a great plague throughout the land; another interpretation says if it does not move for twenty days, there will be many illnesses in May. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, and remains in the Root mansion for ten days, the calamity will fall upon the ruler of that region. The "Yellow Emperor Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Root mansion and forms a curved shape like a hook, the superior person in power will have worries. (Original note: According to the Gan school, there will be an amnesty, expected to occur within six days.)

石氏曰：“熒惑守氐，大人憂，若強國當之；若主有繫者，餓而死；若近臣憂，非一國也，政不安；一曰天下有兵，一曰大國憂。”《春秋緯文曜鉤》曰：“熒惑與氐星合，失地一百里。”石氏曰：“熒惑守氏，去一旬復還，有大兵起，二月有亡地。”又占曰：“熒惑逆行守氐，大臣謀反，其事成。”

The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Root mansion, the high-ranking official will have worries, or a powerful state will suffer the calamity; or the monarch has someone imprisoned, who will die of starvation in prison; or the close attendants will have worries, and the trouble will affect more than one state, causing political instability; another interpretation is that there will be military campaigns throughout the land, and another is that a great state will have worries. The "Spring Annals Brocade · Wen Yao Gou" says: When the Malefic of violence combines with the Root mansion and other stars, it indicates the loss of land for a hundred li. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Root mansion (the original text says '氏', which is a phonetic error for '氐'), after ten days it returns, there will be a great military uprising, and within two months there will be loss of territory. Another divination says: When the Malefic of violence moves retrograde and stays at the Root mansion, the ministers will plot rebellion, and the plot will succeed.

甘氏曰：“熒惑守氐，大臣相譖，主大戰。”巫咸曰：“熒惑守氐，君有疾，有兵起，所守國其君惡之。”（案《案書天文志》曰：武帝永初二年六月乙酉，熒惑犯氐，景平元年廬陵王義真廢，王領豫州也。）《海中占》曰：“熒惑守氐，國亂，有反臣，近臣有憂；有兵，期六月，不出六十日，赦，不遍天下；歲春旱，晚水；不出其年，人相食。”

The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence is stationed at the Root mansion, there will be mutual slander and attacks among ministers, indicating a great war. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence is stationed at the Root mansion, the sovereign will fall ill, military affairs will arise, and the ruler of the territory corresponding to that mansion will most fear this celestial phenomenon. (Original commentary: According to the 'Astronomical Records' in the 'Song Book'—'Case Book' is likely a mistake for 'Song Book'—it records that in the second year of Yongchun during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Song, on the Yiyou day of the sixth month, the Malefic of violence invaded the Root mansion; by the first year of Jingping, Prince Liu Yizhen of Luling was deposed, and at that time he was serving as the governor of the Yu Prefecture.) The 'Sea Divination' says: When the Malefic of violence is stationed at the Root mansion, there will be internal turmoil, a traitor will appear, and the attendants will suffer misfortune; there will be military affairs, expected to last six months; within no more than sixty days there will be an amnesty, but the amnesty will not cover the whole country; that year there will be a drought in spring, and after autumn there will be much rain; before the end of that year, there will be a terrible situation of people eating people.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑出氐，復還守之，強國之君惡之。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守氐，地震動；又曰有土功事；又曰守二十日，相死，親近戮死者；西北之夷來。又曰：守氐色黑，國家有小喪。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守氐，天子惡之。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：武帝永初二年六月乙酉，熒惑犯氐，三年五月，宮車晏駕。）

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence leaves the Root mansion and then returns to guard it, it is most ominous for the ruler of a powerful state. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Root mansion, it indicates an earthquake; also, there will be construction projects; also, if it guards for twenty days, the chancellor will die, the close associates of the ruler will be killed, and the夷狄 from the Northwest will invade. Also, if the star appears dark while guarding the Root mansion, the country will suffer minor losses. The Jiangzhou Divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Root mansion, it is most ominous for the Son of Heaven. (Original note: According to the Records of the Song Dynasty's Astronomical Annals, on June 12th of the second year of Yongchun in the reign of Emperor Wu of the Song Dynasty, the Malefic of violence invaded the Root mansion; by May of the third year of Yongchun, Emperor Wu died. 'The imperial chariot returned late' is a euphemism used by ministers to refer to the death of the ruler.)

郗萌曰：“熒惑守氐，西為父母，後為妻，前為子，東為身；如此者，臣弒君；近期一年，中二年，遠五年。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守氐，成鉤已者，強國之君死之；王者憂，貴人有飢死囚繫者；謂東行反之，還去兩星二尺，期百二十日；去兩星齊，期二十日，以赦解之。

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence stays at the Root mansion, if it is located west of the Root mansion, it indicates the parents; if it is located behind the Root mansion, it indicates the wife; if it is located before the Root mansion, it indicates the sons and daughters; if it is located east of the Root mansion, it indicates the self; the appearance of such an astronomical phenomenon indicates that a minister will kill the sovereign; the effect will be verified within a year, medium term within two years, and distant term within five years. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Root mansion and forms the shape of "gou ji", the king of a powerful state will die because of it; the sovereign will have worries, and among the prominent people, some will be imprisoned and starve to death; this refers to the Malefic of violence originally moving eastward but then turning back, when it retreats, it is about two chi away from the Root mansion, the period of effect is 120 days; if it retreats to align with the two stars, the period of effect is 20 days, and a great amnesty can be used to resolve it.

又占曰：熒惑守氐，去復反、守之，其色黃白，與兩星齊，期十日；去兩星尺，期六十日，有赦。又占曰：熒惑色赤若黃，以九月守氐，六十日有奪地死王；期一年。”

Another divination passage says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Root mansion and then returns to stay there again, if the star's color is yellow-white and the two stars are aligned, the predicted time is ten days; if the distance between the two stars is one foot, the predicted time is sixty days, and there will be an amnesty. Another divination passage says: If the Malefic of violence appears red or yellow and stays at the Root mansion in September, there will be events of seizing land and the death of the king within sixty days; the overall predicted time is one year.
