The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Thirty-Two, Part Three on the Divination of Mars

石氏曰：“熒惑犯南斗，為赦；又曰破軍殺將。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑犯南斗，且有反臣，道路不通，丞相有事。”（案司馬彪《天文志》曰：孝順永和二年八月庚子，熒惑犯南斗，明年五月，吳郡太守羊珍等起兵反，殺吏民，燒宮室，太守王衡拒殺珍等，又江賊蔡伯流等數百人，攻廬陵、九江、燒滅城郭，殺都尉。）

The Shi school says that the Malefic of violence invading the Southern Dipper portends an amnesty; it also indicates that the army will be defeated and generals will be executed. The six stars of the Southern Dipper are the celestial temple, which governs titles, honors, and longevity, and corresponds to the region of Wu-Yue. Therefore, the fulfillment of the following statements often involves the areas of Wu-Yue and the positions of chancellors and generals. The "Sea Divination" says that when the Malefic of violence invades the Southern Dipper, there will be rebellious ministers, blocked roads, and troubles for the chancellor. (Original book note: According to Sima Biao's "Continued Book of Han: Records of Celestial Phenomena," in the second year of Yonghe during Emperor Shun's reign, on the Gengzi day of the eighth month, the Malefic of violence invaded the Southern Dipper. In the following year, in the fifth month, rebels named Yang Zhen and others in Wu Commandery rose up in rebellion, killing officials and civilians, burning government offices and palaces. The governor Wang Heng resisted and executed Yang Zhen and others. There were also hundreds of bandits named Cai Boyou and others on the Yangtze River who attacked Luling and Jiujiang, burning towns and killing the military commanders.)

《聖洽符》曰：“熒惑入南斗口，將相有謀反者。”石氏曰：“熒惑入南斗，三月，吳王死；二月，王后死；一月，相死。不死出走；又曰大國之臣，外內謀大亂。”

The Shengqie Fu says: When the Malefic of violence enters the mouth of the Southern Dipper, there will be someone among the ministers who plots rebellion. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Southern Dipper and lasts for three months, the king of Wu will die; if it lasts for two months, the queen mother will die; if it lasts for one month, the prime minister will die. These people will not die but will flee; it also says that the great ministers of the state will collude inside and outside, plotting great chaos.

According to the annotations in the original text: According to the Records of the Song Dynasty, the Heavenly Officials, in the thirteenth year of Wu Emperor's Chugǔ period, the Malefic of violence moved northward,逆行 into the Southern Dipper, conflicting with the second star of the Dipper's handle, then moved eastward; in the second year of Taíyuán, Sun Quan died, at that time Wang Ling of the state of Wei was secretly plotting to replace the crown prince with Prince Cao Biao of the state of Chu. In the second year of Taí'ān during the reign of Emperor Hui of Jin, the Malefic of violence entered the Southern Dipper; in July, General Chen Zhen of the Right Guards led his troops to escort Emperor Hui against the Prince of Chengdu,司马颖, but the army suffered a defeat, and the troops advanced directly towards the imperial carriage. In September, the Malefic of violence attacked the Prince of Chengdu again in the city of Yè, where the enemy forces scattered, and the Prince of Chengdu thus declined; Emperor Hui returned to Luoyang, but Zhang Fang forced him westward to Chang'an. At that time, bandits rose up all over the country, among whom Zhang Chang was the most rampant.

甘氏曰：“熒惑入南斗中，國大亂，兵大起。”（司馬彪《天文志》曰：孝順嘉平元年十月，熒惑入南斗中，其十一月，會稽賊詐昭聚眾，自稱大將軍，昭父坐為越王，攻破郡縣也。）熒惑入南斗口中，大臣反被誅者，若將相出走。”

The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Southern Dipper, the country will experience great chaos and large-scale military uprisings. (Original book note: According to司马彪's "Continued Book of Han · Astronomical Records," in the first year of Jiaping of Emperor Shun of Han, in the tenth month, the Malefic of violence entered the Southern Dipper; in the same month of November, bandits from Kuaiji, named Xu Zhao, gathered a crowd to rebel, claiming the title of Grand General, and also honored his father as the King of Yue, attacking and breaking through prefectures and counties.) When the Malefic of violence enters the mouth of the Dipper, ministers will rebel and be executed, or chancellors and ministers will flee.

郗萌曰：“熒惑入南斗，國飢；熒惑入南斗口中，立太子；期不出百二十日。熒惑入南斗，天下受爵祿，期六十日；若九十日熒惑逆行，三芒，入鬥口中，必有亡國，死主。”《玉曆》曰：“逆行，角，入鬥口中，必有大喪。”郗萌曰：“熒惑行南斗，有土功事。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑逆行南斗，怒動大明，天下大驚。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence entering the Southern Dipper indicates famine in the country; if the Malefic of violence enters the mouth of the Southern Dipper, it signifies the appointment of a crown prince, and the event will occur within no more than 120 days. When the Malefic of violence enters the Southern Dipper, all people in the country will receive grants of titles and salaries, and the event will occur within 60 days; if after 90 days the Malefic of violence is still retrograding and produces three sharp rays and enters the mouth of the Southern Dipper, there will certainly be a national calamity and the death of the king. The Jade Calendar says: When the Malefic of violence retrogrades and produces rays, and enters the mouth of the Southern Dipper, there will certainly be a great mourning. Xi Meng said: When the Malefic of violence passes through the Southern Dipper, there will be construction projects involving earth and wood. The Sea of Divination says: When the Malefic of violence retrogrades in the Southern Dipper, its light is fierce and exceptionally bright, causing great alarm throughout the country.

郗萌曰：“熒惑過南斗，出斗上，行疾，天子憂，出斗下，行疾，臣有憂。”《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑入南斗，先潦、後大旱。”郗萌曰：“熒惑留南斗，無功者賞。”甘氏曰：“熒惑舍南斗之西，木果不實。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑舍南斗，環繞成鉤已，大尉、上卿、宰相死。”郗萌曰：“熒惑舍南斗之東，天下大戰，一曰守三十日，若君憂。”

Xi Meng said: When the Malefic of violence passes through the Southern Dipper, if it emerges from above the Dipper and moves swiftly, the sovereign will have worries; if it emerges from below the Dipper and moves swiftly, the ministers will have worries. The "Spring Annals Weave" says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Southern Dipper, there will first be floods, then a great drought follows. Xi Meng said: When the Malefic of violence stays in the Southern Dipper, those without merit will be rewarded instead - the Southern Dipper originally governs rank and salary, so the calamity will be on improper rewards. The Gan school said: When the Malefic of violence stays in the western part of the Southern Dipper, trees will not bear fruit. The "Sea of Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the Southern Dipper, if it circles around and forms the shape of "gou ji", the Grand Minister, the Chief Minister, and the Chancellor will die. Xi Meng said: When the Malefic of violence stays in the eastern part of the Southern Dipper, there will be a great war in the country; another view says if it stays for thirty days, the ruler will have worries.

《玉曆》曰：“熒惑出、入、留、舍斗魁之中，五日不下，天下有兵將；軍國易政，改元；不出一年，有兵事。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守南斗百日，五穀出，婦女轉漕，若有諸侯客來見天子者。熒惑守南斗，糴貴；又曰七日以上，太子疾；十二日以上，庶子當之；又曰去復還守之，吳越有憂，期不出三年。”

The Zulü states: When the Malefic of violence appears, disappears, stays, or resides in the handle of the Big Dipper, and refuses to descend for five days, there will be generals with armies in the world; the military and state will change their decrees and alter the era name; within a year, there will be military conflicts. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Southern Dipper for one hundred days, the grain stored in the granary will be distributed, with even women participating in transporting grain, or there will be visits from feudal lords and their guests to the Son of Heaven. When the Malefic of violence guards the Southern Dipper, grain prices will rise sharply; it also says that if it stays for more than seven days, the crown prince will fall ill; if it stays for more than twelve days, misfortune will fall upon the younger sons; it also says that if the Malefic of violence leaves and then returns to guard the Southern Dipper, there will be troubles in the regions of Wu and Yue, and this will occur within three years.

《河圖》曰：“熒惑守南斗，宰相坐之，有兵罷。熒惑逆行，守南斗，山崩；又曰兵車合，國君為帥。”石氏曰：“熒惑守南斗，百二日，大赦。”巫咸曰：“熒惑入南斗，若留守，所守之國當誅。”《五行傳》曰：“熒惑與斗，晨出東方，因留守斗，其國絕嗣。”

The Yellow River Chart says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Southern Dipper, the prime minister will be punished for this, and later there will be an event of ceasing military campaigns. When the Malefic of violence moves retrograde and guards the Southern Dipper, it indicates mountain collapses; it also says that the meeting of military forces and chariots will occur, and the king will personally take command. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Southern Dipper for 102 days, it signifies a great amnesty. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Southern Dipper or stays there, the country corresponding to that region will be punished. The Five Phases Transmission says: When the Malefic of violence and the Southern Dipper are together, and it appears in the east in the morning and then stays at the Southern Dipper, that country will lose its descendants.

（《漢書》景帝元年七月丙戍、熒惑在斗，晨出東方，留守斗。後三年，吳王濞率七國舉反、漢太尉周亞夫敗之，滅國之應。）熒惑守南斗，為亂、為賊、為喪、為兵，守之久，其國絕嗣。”（漢武帝元鼎中，熒惑守南斗，是時南越王趙嬰齊、將入朝漢，其相呂嘉不願內屬，乃殺其王及王太后，舉兵反漢，遣六將軍將兵誅之，遂滅其國，置交州為七郡也。）

The original commentary notes: The "Book of Han" records that in the first year of Emperor Jing of Han, seventh month, on the day of Bingxu, the Malefic of violence appeared in the southern dipper, visible in the east in the morning, and remained stationed before the southern dipper; afterwards, for three years, Prince Liu Bi of Wu led seven states in rebellion, and General Zhou Yafu of Han defeated him, which was the fulfillment of the prophecy of "the destruction of a state." The main text then says: When the Malefic of violence guards the southern dipper, it signifies chaos, bandits, loss of life, and war. If it remains stationed for a long time, the state will lose its descendants. (Original commentary notes: During the Yu Ding period of Emperor Wu of Han, the Malefic of violence guarded the southern dipper; at that time, King Zhao Yingqi of Nan Yue was about to pay homage to the Han court, but his chancellor Li Jia did not wish to submit to the central government, so he killed King Zhao Yingqi and the queen mother, and raised an army against Han. The Han court sent six generals to attack, eventually destroying Nan Yue, establishing the Jiao State, and dividing it into seven commanderies.)

《海中占》曰：“熒惑守南斗、旱、多火災。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守南斗，留二十日，大人憂；守三十日，有德令。”郗萌曰：“熒惑以十月守南斗三十日，民介冑不出，一百日，其國有亡兵。熒惑守南斗，有內變，期一年。熒惑守南斗，地動；嬰兒多疾死，關梁不通；留二十日以上出復；大人憂，期五月。”陳卓曰：“熒惑守南斗，五穀不成，期百二十日；又曰熒惑守南斗，且有廢臣，天下大亂，道路不通；一曰上官吏死。”

The Sea of the Sea Divination says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper, it indicates drought and many fires. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper for twenty days, the high-ranking officials will have worries; if it stays for thirty days, there will be an imperial decree promoting virtuous governance. Xi Meng also says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper for thirty days in the tenth lunar month, the people will have to wear armor and helmets and dare not go out; if it stays for a hundred days, the country will suffer from military losses and casualties. When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper, there will be internal changes in the palace, and the event will occur within a year. When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper, there will be an earthquake; many infants will fall ill and die, and the passes and bridges will be blocked; if it stays for more than twenty days and then leaves and returns, the high-ranking officials will have worries, and the event will occur within five months. Chen Zhuo says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper, the five grains will not mature, and the event will occur within one hundred twenty days; he also says that when the Malefic of violence stays at the Southern Dipper, there will be a minister who will be dismissed, great chaos throughout the land, and roads will be blocked; another view is that the superior officials will die.

郗萌曰：“熒惑犯牽牛，其國之君，必有外其大臣。”陳卓曰：“熒惑犯牽牛，臣謀主。”石氏曰：“熒惑入牽牛中四月，越主死。”巫咸曰：“熒惑入牽牛，糴大貴。”《二十八宿山經注》曰：“熒惑入留牽牛，三日不出，越王為強兵所逐。”陳卓曰：“熒惑入牽牛三月，若四月，齊王死；一曰晉王當之。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence invading "Chou" (the Ox) indicates that the ruler of the corresponding region will certainly distance and reject his ministers. The six stars of Chou govern border passes, rivers, ferries, and sacrificial offerings, and it belongs to the region corresponding to Wu and Yue, so the following statements frequently relate to the King of Yue, cattle and horses, and sacrificial animals. Chen Zhuo said: The Malefic of violence invading Chou indicates that ministers plot against the king. The Shi school said: When the Malefic of violence enters Chou and stays for four months, the king of Yue will die. Wu Xian said: When the Malefic of violence enters Chou, grain prices will rise sharply. The "Commentary on the Twenty-Eight Constellations and Mountains" said: When the Malefic of violence enters and stays in Chou for three days without leaving, the King of Yue will be expelled by a powerful army. Chen Zhuo said: When the Malefic of violence enters Chou for three or four months, the King of Qi will die; another view says the misfortune falls on the King of Jin.

郗萌曰：“熒惑乘牽牛，為天下有大水起，穀貴，人相棄於道。”《挺輔占》曰：“牽牛為令天下者，熒惑居陽，則喜；居陰，則憂。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑出入留舍牽牛，春旱、秋水；一曰關梁不通。”齊伯曰：“熒惑出入留舍牽牛，三十日不下，薪蒿有急，牛且大貴；進行十度以上，至三十度；不出百六十日，客兵來。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence is in the constellation of the Ox, indicating that great floods will arise, grain prices will rise sharply, and people will abandon each other on the roads. The text "Ting Fu Zhan" says: The Ox constellation relates to the issuing of commands throughout the world. If the Malefic of violence is in its yang position, there will be joy; if in its yin position, there will be sorrow. The text "Hai Zhong Zhan" says: If the Malefic of violence is in the Ox constellation, moving in and out, stopping, or staying, there will be drought in spring and much rain in autumn; another interpretation says that the pass and bridge will be blocked. Qi Bo said: If the Malefic of violence is in the Ox constellation, moving in and out, stopping, or staying, and does not descend for thirty days, there will be a shortage of firewood and grass, and the price of cattle will rise sharply; if it moves forward more than ten degrees up to thirty degrees, then within one hundred and sixty days, foreign troops will come.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守牽牛，民為亂，貴人多死。”石氏曰：“熒惑守牽牛，民餓，有自賣者。”巫咸曰：“熒惑守牽牛，為多火災；又曰牛大疫，多有死者，災非一國，牛貴十倍（石氏曰三倍），道無行牛；一曰當有稅牛之役。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑守牽牛，為旱。熒惑守牽牛，有急行；又曰歲多雨露。”

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards the constellation of the Ox, the common people will rise up in rebellion, and many of the powerful will die. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Ox, the common people will suffer from hunger, leading to many selling themselves into slavery. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Ox, there will be many fires; also, cattle will suffer a great epidemic, with many dying, and the disaster will not be limited to one country. The price of cattle will rise tenfold (the original commentary notes that the Shi school says it will rise threefold), and there will be no cattle seen on the roads. Another interpretation says there will be a levy on cattle and the conscription of cattle for labor. The Sea Divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Ox, it indicates drought. It also says that when the Malefic of violence guards the Ox, there will be urgent military movements; it also says that there will be abundant rain and dew that year.

郗萌曰：“熒惑十月守牽牛，不十日，兵大起。熒惑守牽牛，若有殺畜產事。熒惑守牽牛，有犧牲之事；有反逆者從中起，有走軍死將；期一年。”（案《宋書天文志》曰：晉成親咸康元年六月乙亥火犯牽牛中央星，建元二年，征西將軍庚亮薨。）

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence stays at the constellation Niou in the tenth month, and within ten days, great military forces will rise. When the Malefic of violence guards the constellation Niou, there may be slaughtering of livestock and loss of property. The Malefic of violence guarding the constellation Niou indicates there will be sacrifices for worship; there will also be rebels starting from within, fleeing armies, and generals dying in battle. The fulfillment of this prediction will occur within a year. (Original book note: According to the "Celestial Officials" section of the "Book of Song," on June Yihai of the first year of the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Jin dynasty, the Malefic of violence approached the central star of the constellation Niou; by the second year of the Jianyuan era, the general of the Western Expedition, Yu Liang, died.)

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入守牽牛三十日以上，人相食。”《北官候》曰：“熒惑守牽牛二十日以上，有反逆者，牛車用；期四十日，若七十日。”《聖洽符》曰：“熒惑入守牽牛，歲大水，津河不通，五穀大傷，其歲不中。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入牽牛中，出守牽牛之南，有大赦，期二十日。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* states: If the Malefic of violence enters and stays in the constellation of the Ox for more than thirty days, there will be a terrible situation of people eating people. The *Beiguan Divination* says: If the Malefic of violence stays in the Ox for more than twenty days, there will be rebels who rise up, and many ox-drawn carts will be conscripted for military transport; the predicted time is either forty or seventy days. The *Shengqia Symbol* says: If the Malefic of violence enters and stays in the Ox, there will be a great flood in that year, with river crossings and waterways blocked and impassable, causing severe damage to the five grains, and the harvest of the year will be completely ruined—since the Ox is the master of bridges, ferry crossings, and waterways, the disaster will fall upon the rivers and transportation. Xi Meng says: If the Malefic of violence first enters the Ox and then stays in the southern part of the Ox, there will be a great amnesty, with the predicted time being twenty days.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑以春二月、三月留牽牛相守者，芻蒿貴，至八月止。”又占曰：“熒惑犯守牛大星，臣謀主，諸侯將兵，大人憂之，其國亂，人民飢。”甘氏曰：“熒惑犯牽牛，留守之，有破軍殺將。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑犯守牽牛，諸侯多疾。”

The book Zhongzhou Zhan says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation Niutou during the second and third months of spring and does not move away, the price of fodder and dry grass becomes expensive, and this situation continues until the eighth month. Another divination passage says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at the large star of Niutou, ministers will plot against the sovereign, the feudal lords will hold excessive military power, and the person in high position will be troubled, leading to disorder in the country and famine among the people. The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at Niutou, there will be the defeat of armies and the death of generals. The book Hai Zhong Zhan says: When the Malefic of violence invades and stays at Niutou, the feudal lords will suffer many diseases.

《帝覽嬉》曰：“熒惑犯須女，若守之三十日不下，女主有病者，若府藏中有甲兵；十日不下，主后有死者，期百八十日。”石氏曰：“熒惑入須女中，旬，主后死。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入須女，留二十日，為天子受女之慶；近期三十日，遠期四月。熒惑入須女，糴貴，石三百，人有自賣，不出縣邑，有死者。熒惑入守，妃貴人女子多死者。”

The "Imperial Inspection of Joy" says: When the Malefic of Violence enters "Needle Woman," if it does not descend within thirty days, the female ruler will fall ill, or there will be hidden weapons and armor in the treasury; if it does not descend within ten days, there will be death among the sovereign and the empress, and the prediction will come true in one hundred and eighty days. The four stars of Needle Woman are also called Girl Mansion, which govern matters of silk and hemp, marriage, and female occupations. Therefore, the omens usually relate to the empress, concubines, and women, as well as silk and hemp. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of Violence enters Needle Woman for ten days, the empress will die. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of Violence enters Needle Woman and stays for twenty days, it signifies a joyful event of the sovereign marrying a woman as a concubine; if it is near, the prediction will come true within thirty days, if it is far, within four months. When the Malefic of Violence enters and stays in Needle Woman, grain prices will soar, reaching three hundred coins per stone, and some people will sell themselves into slavery, dying on the way without leaving their county or town. When the Malefic of Violence enters and stays in Needle Woman, many concubines, noblemen, and women will die.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入須女，有帛貴，天子內美女；不然甲兵起。”郗萌曰：“熒惑出須女中，主也；出段女兩傍，諸臣也；留為憂。”《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑之須女，不求女。”郗萌曰：“熒惑在須女，逆行至牛，復還女，倏去倏還，為千里無稼牆。”《河圖》曰：“熒惑居須女陽，有吉；居陰，有憂。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the Malefic of violence enters the constellation of Mustard, silk and cloth will become expensive, and the emperor will take a beautiful woman into the palace; otherwise, there will be military uprisings. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence comes out from the center of Mustard, it concerns the sovereign; when it comes out from both sides of Mustard (the original text mistakenly says "Duan" instead of "Xu"), it concerns the ministers; if it stays without moving, it indicates calamity. The *Chunqiu Wei* says: When the Malefic of violence reaches the constellation of Mustard, it is not suitable to seek a wife. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence is in the constellation of Mustard, and it goesretrograde to the constellation of Ox, then turns back to Mustard, coming and going unpredictably, it indicates that there will be no crops for a thousand li. ("Jiaqiang" is actually "Jiasai"). The *Yellow River Chart* says: When the Malefic of violence is in the yang position of Mustard, it is auspicious; when it is in the yin position, it indicates worry.

郗萌曰：“熒惑舍須女，蠶不得。熒惑出入留舍須女，五十日不下，天下有民大恐，其國開庫、出兵，加於吳越城。”熒惑留須女，有反逆者，徒女者諸夫人家起。”齊伯曰：“熒惑出入留須女，十日不下，刀劍大貴。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑以十二月守須女之西南，奸人入邑。守其北百日，有諸侯稼女絕國者。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence stops in the constellation Su Nu, and sericulture will not have a good harvest. When the Malefic of violence enters, leaves, stays, or resides in Su Nu, it remains for fifty days without descending, causing great panic among the people of the country. That country will open its military stores and send troops to attack the cities of Wu and Yue. When the Malefic of violence stays in Su Nu, there will be rebels, and chaos will start from the households of the various concubines (the term "tu nu" should be "tu nu", meaning the frequent change of favorites in the harem). Qi Bo said: When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, or resides in Su Nu, it does not descend for ten days, and the price of swords and spears rises sharply. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the southwest of Su Nu in the twelfth month, wicked people will secretly enter the cities. If it stays in the northern direction for a hundred days, there will be a country that will be destroyed due to the marriage of its princesses ("jia nu" refers to "marriage of daughters").

The Wen Yao Gou says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Female Ox, the ruler will appoint a concubine as queen and elevate a妾 to the position of wife, or someone will present a woman. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Female Ox, the sovereign should distribute silk, cotton, cloth and silk goods for relief; if it stays for twenty days, the prices of silk, cotton, cloth and silk will rise sharply. Chen Zhuo says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Female Ox, the person in high position will not rest in peace, the five grains will not be abundant, and the people will be sick. The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Female Ox, the country will suffer from famine and the price of grain will soar, and the people will sell themselves into slavery. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Female Ox, there will be mourning for a woman in the country, and it will be the queen; also, palace women will have worries, and the price of ox horns will rise sharply.

郗萌曰：“熒惑守須女，後、夫人有憂，大人不安。熒惑守須女，女子為天下政；一曰女子為亂，法令更行；疾、無憂；國有稼女娶婦事，臣下衣服奢侈；守三十日，其君憂。熒惑守須女北，國大水，人民處木上。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守須女，色青，有女喪，宮女有憂；黑，女多死；黃白，吉。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence occupies the position of Xunü, indicating that the queen and the lady in waiting will have worries, and those in high positions will not find peace. The Malefic of violence occupying Xunü suggests that women will take charge of state affairs; another interpretation is that women will cause disturbances, leading to changes in laws. If the movement of the star is swift and passes quickly, there will be no worries. In the country, there will be marriages and weddings, and the clothing and attire of officials will become more luxurious. If the Malefic of violence remains for thirty days, the king will have worries. When the Malefic of violence is stationed to the north of Xunü, there will be a great flood in the country, and the people will have to take refuge in trees. The "Jingzhou Divination" states: When the Malefic of violence occupies Xunü, if the star appears blue, there will be the death of a woman and worries among the palace attendants; if it appears black, many women will die; if it appears yellowish-white, it is auspicious.

《海中占》曰：“熒惑犯守須女，多妖祥，大臣當之。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑守犯乘須女二十日，大人婦女有反逆者，從女起，若有女喪；其年糴三倍，人民多死。”陳卓曰：“熒惑留逆犯守乘凌須女，天子及大臣有變，必有奇令。”

The Sea of Waves Divination says: The Malefic of violence invades and guards the Mansion of the Nurturer, indicating many signs of strange phenomena, and calamity will befall the ministers. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the Malefic of violence guards, invades, or dominates the Mansion of the Nurturer for twenty days, there will be rebels among the Nobleman and women, disorder originating from women, or the death of a woman; in that year, grain prices will triple, and many people will die. Chen Zhuo says: When the Malefic of violence stays, retrogrades, invades, guards, or dominates the Mansion of the Nurturer, the Emperor and ministers will suffer mishaps, and an extraordinary decree will certainly be issued.

The two stars of the Emptiness mansion preside over temple worship and mourning, and also correspond to the region of Qi, so the following events mostly occur in Qi and matters related to death and mourning. The Jiangzhong Divination says: The sovereign will have major affairs. The Wenyao Gou says: The Malefic of violence entering the Emptiness mansion brings calamity through destruction and ruin. The Shi school says: If the Malefic of violence enters the center of the Emptiness mansion and remains for three months, the King of Qi will die; if it remains for ten days, the chancellor will die; if not, he will flee. Wu Xian says: When the Malefic of violence enters the center of the Emptiness mansion, one should pay attention to the day it exits and count the days, with the fulfillment occurring thirty days later, when military actions will be launched; also observe the changes at the initial entry point, another account says the fulfillment occurs ten days later, when the army will disband.

郗萌曰：“熒惑入虛，逐功臣，一曰牛車貴。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入虛，天下有變，諸侯有死者，有罷軍破將，天下更政令，期一年。”陳卓曰：“熒惑在虛東，東藩旱；在虛南，楚地旱；在虛西，廬江旱；在虛北，遼東、遼西旱。”郗萌曰：“熒惑入虛成鉤已；天下大亂，政急，大人憂，以戰不勝；一曰有德令。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence entering the Emptiness mansion indicates the removal of meritorious ministers; another interpretation is that the price of ox carts is high. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Emptiness mansion, there will be disturbances throughout the land, some princes will die, some armies will be disbanded and generals defeated, and the government will change its decrees, which will come to pass within a year. Chen Zhuo said: When the Malefic of violence is in the eastern part of the Emptiness mansion, the eastern vassal states will suffer from drought; in the southern part, the Chu region will suffer from drought; in the western part, the area around Lujiang will suffer from drought; and in the northern part, the regions of Liao Dong and Liao Xi will suffer from drought. Xi Meng also said: When the Malefic of violence enters the Emptiness mansion and forms the shape of "gou ji", there will be great chaos throughout the land, the government will impose harsh decrees, those in high positions will have worries, and once battle is joined, they will not be able to win; another interpretation is that there will be an edict promoting virtue and benevolence.

《春秋緯》曰：“熒惑留虛，有以喪徭。”郗萌曰：“熒惑留虛，群臣不尊敬祭祀，女主不謹。熒惑留虛三十日，其君臣憂。熒惑舍天，天府，天下喜，賜諸侯王。”又曰：“舍天府門中央，天下赦。”齊伯曰：“熒惑出入留舍虛之間，憂在齊，其國治城郭，兵來期不出十年中，敗。”

The Spring Annals says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the Emptiness mansion, there will be mourning and the mobilization of labor. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the Emptiness mansion, the ministers cannot respectfully perform worship, and the female ruler does not act with caution. If the Malefic of violence stays in the Emptiness mansion for thirty days, the sovereign and ministers in that region will all have worries. It also says: When the Malefic of violence stays at the Treasury star and Command star (the original text says 'abandons Heaven, Treasury star and Command star', with the word 'Heaven' repeated), there will be joy and celebration throughout the land, and the court will reward the feudal princes. It also says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the central part of the Treasury star's gate, the whole country will be pardoned. Qi Bo says: When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, or remains in the area of the Emptiness mansion, calamity will fall upon the state of Qi, and that country will need to repair its city walls; if enemy forces attack, they will not come within ten years, and ultimately will be defeated.

The Chunqiu Tu says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Emptiness mansion, the prices of the five grains will rise sharply, and officials and common people will die, suffer injuries, and be separated. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence guards the Emptiness mansion, generals and armies will all be mobilized, and the whole country will change its laws.

The original commentary notes: The "Anzi Spring and Autumn" records that the Malefic of violence remained over the Emptiness mansion for an entire year. King Jing of Qi asked Anzi, saying: Who should bear this calamity? Anzi replied: It should be borne by the state of Qi. King Jing was displeased, saying: There are twelve great states in the world, why should it be Qi that bears the calamity? Anzi replied: The Emptiness mansion is originally the celestial region corresponding to Qi; moreover, calamities in the world naturally first fall upon the wealthy and powerful states. When good advice is not heeded, decrees are not implemented, virtuous men are distant and dismissed, and slanderous ministers gain power and prosperity, the people become resentful and distressed, so the celestial stars lose their order, and the Malefic of violence movesretrograde. King Jing said: Can it be made to leave? Anzi replied: Release the prisoners detained in wrongful cases, let them return to their fields; distribute the wealth accumulated by officials, give it to the people; care for the orphans and the elderly, and show respect to the aged. If these things can be done, not only will the Malefic of violence depart, but what calamity cannot be dispelled? King Jing said: Good. He did these things for three days, and the Malefic of violence indeed moved away from its position. This story corresponds with the previous account of King Song Jing of Chu issuing three good words and the Malefic of violence moving away, both being typical ancient examples of using moral cultivation to avert calamities.

郗萌曰：熒惑守虛、危，有土功事；九十日，天下亂，歲大飢。”甘氏曰：“熒惑守危，以人民為變，天下大水。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守危，以民流多死；一曰女子多死。”《玉曆》曰：“熒惑守危，以水火入，多疾疫，若有土功，修治陵廟，期不出年。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence stays over the Emptiness mansion and the Rooftop mansion, indicating there will be construction work; after ninety days, the whole country will be in turmoil and there will be a great famine that year. The Gan school said: When the Malefic of violence stays over the Rooftop mansion, the people will therefore start up revolts, and the whole country will suffer a great flood. Xi Meng said: When the Malefic of violence stays over the Rooftop mansion, the people will be homeless and many will die; another view is that many women will die. The Jade Calendar said: When the Malefic of violence stays over the Rooftop mansion, water and fire disasters will both invade, causing many epidemics; or there will be construction work, requiring the repair of tombs and ancestral temples, and the fulfillment of the prophecy will not be beyond that year—under the Rooftop mansion there are four stars representing tombs, so the divination always relates to the construction of tombs and ancestral temples.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑入虛而犯守之，天子自將兵，流血滿野，必有死國，死王，期三年。”郗萌曰：“熒惑犯守虛，有土功之事；一曰合於虛，土功當舉。”石氏曰：“熒惑犯守虛，天下有變更令者；百姓多疾，歲旱，不熟，赤地千里，穀糴踴貴，菽粟三倍。”（《荊州占》曰：十倍。）

Another view is that it combines with the Emptiness mansion, indicating that construction work will be carried out. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence attacks the Emptiness mansion, there will be people who change laws and regulations. The people will suffer from many diseases, the harvest will be dry and barren, the five grains will not mature, there will be a thousand miles of scorched land, the price of grain will soar, and beans and millet will rise three times. The *Jingzhou Divination* says: The Malefic of violence invades the "Wei" mansion, and chaos will prevail throughout the land. The Wei mansion, consisting of three stars, governs house construction and burial matters. It also belongs to the territory of Qi, so the following text repeatedly mentions earthworks, roofing houses, and weeping. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Wei mansion, there will be a general amnesty. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Wei mansion, wicked ministers will rise up. If the Malefic of violence remains in the Wei mansion for three months, the King of Qi will die; if he does not die, he must flee. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Wei mansion, there will be imperial edicts announcing changes and reforms; he also says that when the Malefic of violence enters the Treasury star, the emperor will personally attend to the treasury affairs. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Wei mansion, the cities of Yue will be destroyed.

郗萌曰：“熒惑逆行危，其君簡祭祀。熒惑入危，留之；以過復還，留之；大人當之。熒惑留危，群臣不敬宗祀。熒惑舍天府，天子賜諸候王；舍門中，天下赦。熒惑出入舍危，其國繕城郭，而起兵。”巫咸曰：“熒惑出入留舍危，國中大亂，吏民相攻。熒惑守危，大國有憂，人民為變國易政，不出其年；天下大疾，死者不葬。熒惑守危，國為政者。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence is moving retrograde in the Rooftop mansion star. The ruler is neglectful in worship. The Malefic of violence enters the Rooftop mansion and stays there; after passing through it, it turns back and stays again; calamity falls upon the high-ranking officials. When the Malefic of violence stays in the Rooftop mansion, the ministers cannot respectfully serve the ancestral temples and perform sacrifices. When the Malefic of violence stays in the Treasury star and Command star, the Son of Heaven will bestow favors upon the feudal princes; when it stays in the middle of the gate, the whole country will be pardoned. When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, and remains in the Rooftop mansion, the country will repair its walls and raise an army. Wu Xian said: When the Malefic of violence enters, stays, and remains in the Rooftop mansion, great disorder will occur in the country, officials and common people will attack each other. When the Malefic of violence guards the Rooftop mansion, great states will have worries, the people will rise in rebellion, the country will change its policies, and these events will occur within the same year; a great plague will spread throughout the land, and the dead will not be buried. When the Malefic of violence guards the Rooftop mansion, calamity will fall upon those who hold power in the state.

The Wen Yao Gou says: The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, the people suffer from many epidemic diseases, the harvest is dry and the crops are not ripe, the whole country faces great famine, and military conflicts follow. The Hai Zhong Divination says: The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, there is drought in spring and floods in autumn, and within a year water and drought alternate. Xi Meng says: The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, the superior person acts against the usual order. The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, guests will be punished for some matter and die. The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, the foundation of the palace cracks. The Malefic of violence stays at Rooftop mansion, it indicates the superior person is building houses and palaces. Rooftop mansion is the master of palace construction, so it often relates to earth and wood.

The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence is stationed at the position of danger, if it remains for thirty days without descending, there will be the building of palaces and ancestral temples and mourning ceremonies; if it remains for sixty days without descending, the country will change its policies and alter its political situation.

《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入危，乘守二十日，若九十日；東方兵起，國有死者，歲旱不熟，糴十倍，民食草木，嫁妻賣子，牛羊倍價。熒惑乘危，天下大亂。”《北官候》曰：“熒惑入危，留守三十日，若九十日；天下易政，咎以入日占。”

The *Jingzhou Divination* says: When the Malefic of Violence enters the Rooftop Mansion, it stays and dominates for twenty days or ninety days; if the eastern region mobilizes troops, there will be deaths within the country, the harvest will be dry and unripe, grain prices will rise tenfold, people will subsist on grass and trees, sell their wives and children, and the price of cattle and sheep will double. When the Malefic of Violence dominates the Rooftop Mansion, chaos will prevail throughout the land. The *Beiguan Wait* says: When the Malefic of Violence enters the Rooftop Mansion, it stays and remains for thirty days or ninety days; the state will change its policies, and specific calamities should be predicted according to the stem and branch of the day it enters.

《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑入危，諸侯王謀，大兵起，天下易變；若有土功；守上星，為人民死；守中星、諸侯死；守下星，大臣死；期百八十日。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守墳墓，為人主有哭泣聲。”

The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence enters the Rooftop mansion, the feudal princes plot rebellion, great military forces arise, and the world undergoes change; or there will be construction projects; if the star above the Rooftop mansion is guarded, it indicates the death of common people; if the middle star is guarded, the feudal princes will die; if the star below is guarded, the ministers will die; the period of fulfillment is one hundred and eighty days. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence guards the tomb stars (the four stars south of the Rooftop mansion), it indicates that there will be mourning sounds coming from the royal household.

郗萌曰：“熒惑犯營室者，犯陽，為陽有急犯陰，為陰有急。”石氏曰：“熒惑犯營室，以賤人為役。熒惑入營室中，入三月，衛君死；入五月，相死；不死出走。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑犯乘營室，諸侯相攻，大戰，糴倍。”甘氏曰：“熒惑入營室，大臣匿謀。”巫咸曰：“熒惑入營室，臣伐主，一曰有兵，兵罷。”

Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence invades "Yingshi", and if it violates its yang position, there will be urgent difficulties in the yang aspect; if it violates its yin position, there will be urgent difficulties in the yin aspect. Yingshi consists of two stars, also known as Dingxing, which is the palace and guest house of the Son of Heaven, governing earth and wood construction affairs, belonging to the territory of Wei. Therefore, the following text repeatedly refers to the king of Wei, palaces, and earth works. The Shi school said: When the Malefic of violence invades Yingshi, it will employ poor and lowly people to perform labor. If the Malefic of violence enters Yingshi, and remains for three months, the king of Wei will die; if it remains for five months, the prime minister will die; if they do not die, they will have to flee. The "Jingzhou Divination" said: When the Malefic of violence invades and occupies Yingshi, the feudal lords will attack each other, there will be great battles, and grain prices will double. The Gan school said: When the Malefic of violence enters Yingshi, ministers will plot secretly. Wu Xian said: When the Malefic of violence enters Yingshi, ministers will attack the sovereign; another interpretation is that there will be military affairs, followed by the cessation of military actions.

郗萌曰：“熒惑入營室壁中，有惡謀。熒惑入營室中，賊臣起，非盜乃客，期六十日。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑入營室，齊國有兵，諸侯若民多死，歲不收，期十月。”《聖洽符》曰：“熒惑入營室，齊國有兵，諸侯若民多死，歲不收，期十月。”《聖洽符》曰：“熒惑逆行營室，成鉤己，天子失宮殿，大臣為亂，兵大起。”

The "Shengqia Fu" also states: When the Malefic of violence enters the Camp Room, Qi will have military affairs, and many nobles or common people will die, with no harvest in the harvest season, and the period of fulfillment is ten months. 石氏曰：“熒惑逆行營室，環繞之，三十日有破國；六十日不下，有崩王，吳太子死；期一年，中二年，遠三年。”石氏曰：“熒惑逆行，以犯營室，臣謀兵起。”《河圖》曰：“熒惑居營室，兩軍相據當相和；不相合，有殃罰。”《荊州占》曰：“熒惑經營室中，諸候兵相謀。”

The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence movesretrograde in the constellation Yingshi and circles around, there will be a country being attacked and broken within thirty days; if it does not descend within sixty days, there will be the death of a king, and the crown prince of Wu will die. Those close in time will come to pass within a year, those in the middle within two years, and those distant within three years. The Shi school also says: When the Malefic of violenceretrograde and invades Yingshi, ministers will plot against the sovereign, and military conflicts will arise. The Yellow River Chart says: When the Malefic of violence resides in Yingshi, two armies facing each other will have to make peace; if they cannot make peace, they will suffer calamity and punishment. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the Malefic of violence passes through the middle of Yingshi, the feudal lords will hold armies and plot against each other.

The Luo Writing says: The Malefic of violence enters and stays in the constellation Weishì, indicating that the superior ruler will have worries, and ministers will secretly desire to kill the sovereign; there will be great disturbances in the inner court, and the fulfillment of this omen will not occur within the same year. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: When the Malefic of violence enters the constellation Weishì, Weishì is the palace of the sovereign; if it stays for more than twenty days, the sovereign most fears this omen. Xi Meng says: This is an omen of the sovereign losing his position, and the fulfillment will not be beyond ten months; if it merely passes through without staying, then it will be the ministers who attack the sovereign. The Sea Divination says: When the Malefic of violence enters Weishì and stays for twenty days, the sovereign will die; if the star remains in the southern part of Weishì and appears red and angry, with a red halo forming the shape of 'gou ji', then there will indeed be calamity; if not, there will be no disaster. One must carefully observe the harmonious or angry appearance of the star in order to determine fortune or misfortune.

The Wenyaogou says: The Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, and the sovereign favors one concubine exclusively. The Shi school says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, the Son of Heaven must整顿 military forces and personally take charge; the ruler will suffer from flooding and high grain prices. It also says: If it stays for three months, the ruler will die, and then a new sovereign will be established. The Gan school says: When the Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, the guest army will burn the residence of the host; the general will meet with misfortune, not necessarily being executed, but certainly encountering rebellion; if the commander abandons his troops, he will also face calamity; it also says the common people will rise up in revolt; if it stays for more than thirty days, the Son of Heaven will die.

巫咸曰：“熒惑守營室，旱，五穀不成，多火災。”《海中占》曰：“熒惑守營室，人民疾疫，多死亡。”郗萌曰：“熒惑守營室，人君攻宮室，為土功事；又曰以正月守營室，三月；若五月，有大旱之災，天下大飢。”石氏曰：“熒惑入，若守天宮四十日，諸候轉粟千里，各虛。”

Wu Xian said: The Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, indicating drought, with the five grains unable to mature, and many fires occurring. The "Sea of Divination" said: The Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, causing the common people to suffer from plague, with many deaths. Xi Meng said: The Malefic of violence stays in the constellation of the Encampment, indicating that the sovereign will greatly construct palaces and buildings, engaging in large-scale construction projects; also, if it stays in the constellation of the Encampment during the first lunar month, by the third or fifth lunar month there will be a great drought, leading to widespread famine throughout the land. The Shi school said: If the Malefic of violence enters or stays in the constellation of the Heavenly Palace (which is the Encampment, the sovereign's summer palace and guest houses) for forty days, the princes will have to transport grain over a thousand li to provide relief, and the granaries in all regions will thus be emptied.

《文曜鉤》曰：“熒惑入守犯營室，以內淫近色，及天殃，皆不以命終，王者惡之。”郗萌曰：“熒惑犯守營室中，皆有土功事。”《黃帝占》曰：“熒惑守離宮正東，為父，守正西，為母；守正北，為妻，守正南，為子；守舍星，為身；其焰赫赫，其國離易；期三年、遠五年，兵起。”

The Wen Yao Gou says: When the Malefic of violence enters, guards, or invades the Camp Room, it is because of licentiousness within the palace and closeness to women, which brings calamity from heaven; these people will not die naturally, and it is most dangerous for a ruler. Xi Meng says: When the Malefic of violence invades and guards the Camp Room, it indicates earth and wood construction matters. The Huangdi Zhan says: When the Malefic of violence guards the eastern direction of the Li Palace (the six stars beside the Camp Room), it refers to the father; guarding the western direction refers to the mother; guarding the northern direction refers to the wife; guarding the southern direction refers to the son; guarding the native star of the Camp Room refers to oneself; if its flame is fierce and oppressive, the country will scatter and change; the time of occurrence is three years, or five years at the furthest, and military actions will arise.
