The Purple Micro Enclosure has fifty-nine stars used for divination.
Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar
The Shi school says: The Purple Micro Enclosure consists of fifteen stars. On the western side, there is a column of seven stars forming the outer enclosure, and on the eastern side, a column of eight stars forming the outer enclosure, located north of the Big Dipper. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates: the westernmost star is located at the tenth degree of the Chariot Mansion, ninety and a half degrees from the north celestial pole, and fifty-six degrees and three quarters within the Yellow Path. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: the term "Purple Micro Palace" refers to "Purple" indicating its position in the north, and "Palace" indicating its central location; it is also called "Heavenly Enclosure," "Long Enclosure," and "Sun Banner." The "Yue Shi Tu" says: the celestial palaces are the Purple Micro Palace. The "Chunqiu Gu Cheng Tu" says: the Purple Palace is the dwelling place where the heavenly emperor "Tai Yi" resides permanently. The original book's marginal note cites Xi Meng saying: it is the permanent dwelling place of Tai Yi. Wu Xian says: the Purple Palace is the fixed residence of the Son of Heaven, and in the Five Phases it belongs to the Earth official. Zhang Heng's "Ling Xian" says: the Purple Palace is the dwelling place of the highest imperial authority. The "Chunqiu Yuan Meng Bao" says: the Purple Palace exhales yang energy and contains yin energy.
The Huainan Tianwen Xian Gu says: The Purple Palace holds the Big Dipper and assists in the movement of the celestial bodies. The Sun moves one degree each day, thus completing a full circle around the sky. On the day of the Winter Solstice, the Sun reaches the "Junlang Mountain," which is the place where the Sun stops on the Winter Solstice. After that, the Sun moves one degree each day, and after traveling 182 and five-eighths degrees, it reaches the "Niushou Weili," which is the place where the Sun is on the Summer Solstice. In this way, the Sun travels a total of 365 and one-fourth degrees in a round trip, forming a complete year. The Shihen Shenwu says: The Purple Palace is in charge of issuing the calendar.
The Shengqie Fu says: Observing the Purple Micro Palace should be done on the day of Wu Zi. When the stars of the Purple Micro Palace are scattered and chaotic, human affairs will be neglected, the ruler will be arrogant and extravagant, not listening to advice, and surrounded by villains; when the stars of the Purple Micro Palace are harmonious and upright, phoenixes will come, and praise will follow. The Shi school says: All the stars of the Purple Micro Palace should be bright, each with their proper size and measure. Xi Meng says: If the stars of the Purple Micro Palace are not flourishing, scholars will suffer losses, and there will be the loss of wives and children. Another divination says: When the flag star near the Purple Micro Palace is straight, it indicates the emperor will travel and personally lead the army; when the fence of the Purple Micro Palace is open, it indicates military affairs will arise. The Jingzhou Divination says: When the stars of the Purple Micro Palace are bright, there will be good fortune and prosperity, and the ministers within the palace will be strong. The Shi school praise says: The fifteen stars within the Purple Micro Palace are the complete guards around the heavenly emperor.
The Northern Pole Star and Hook Chen are used to determine the sixty hexagrams.
The Shi school says: The five stars of the Northern Pole and the six stars of Gou Chen are all within the Purple Palace. The original commentary notes the coordinates of Gou Chen: the six stars of Gou Chen enter the eastern Wall Mansion by eight degrees and three fourths, at a distance of eleven and a half degrees from the northern celestial pole, and are within the Yellow Path by eighty-four degrees. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: the Northern Pole is also called "Heavenly Pole" and "North Star." The original commentary cites the "Analects" saying: "Like the North Star, it remains in its place while all the other stars revolve around it," where "gong" means to encircle and guard, referring precisely to the Northern Pole. The Northern Pole is located in the Purple Palace, representing the divine sovereign of heaven, and also symbolizes the Three Grand Ministers, positioned before the Big Dipper. The original commentary says: the star of the Northern Pole's central star is the axis of the heavens; the celestial bodies rotate ceaselessly, yet this star at the center remains unmoving.
The Huangdi Zhan says: Tianshu is the position occupied by the spirit of Tianyi. Wu Gong's Tian Gao Xing Zhan says: Beichen is also called "Tianyi," and also called "Xiqu." The Chunqiu Wei says: Among the stars of the Northern Pole, the one that is the brightest and largest is the radiance of the spirit of Taiyi. It contains the primordial qi, and by means of the Big Dipper it bestows rewards, opens up all things, issues the primordial qi, determines the seasons, governs the spirits, spreads the refined qi and produces the "one," thus establishing the lineage of the Yellow Emperor. The Chunqiu Wei also says: The great Dao arises from "Yuanyi" and esteems it, so Taiyi resides in the Northern Pole, which is the position of the heavenly emperor. Sima Qian's Tian Gao Shu says: The star in Tianjiu, that single one, is the dwelling place of Taiyi, which is where Taiyi resides constantly. The three stars beside it symbolize the Three Ministers, and some say they symbolize the descendants and relatives of the Son of Heaven. The Guangya says: Beichen rotates and circulates the refined essence of light and shadow.
The Huangdi Zhan says: The Northern Pole Star is the seat of the God Taiyi; the first star among them governs the moon, symbolizing the crown prince; the so-called first star refers to the one that is the reddest and brightest. The Huangdi Zhan also says: When the stars of the Northern Pole are bright and numerous, the sovereign will have good fortune and prosperity; if the Northern Pole is dim and faint, the sovereign will suffer losses. The Li Wei says: When the Son of Heaven properly performs the ceremony with the jade gui and mai, the stars of the Northern Pole will be neatly arranged; the gui and mai are jade objects held by the Son of Heaven during court ceremonies, used to verify the gui presented by the feudal lords. The Chunqiu Wei says: The Northern Pole Star governs the announcement of the calendar. Another divination says: When the Northern Pole Star disappears, it will be eight years before the Central Plains has no sovereign and the world falls into chaos. The Chunqiu Wei Yun Dou Shu says: When the sovereign follows the heavenly order and practices righteousness, but shows disrespect during the ceremonial worship of Heaven and the service of deities, neglects rituals, and disregards the old laws and texts, the star Dou will not be bright. The Xiaowen Jing says: When virtue reaches the heavens, the stars of the Big Dipper will be extremely bright, and sweet dew will follow.
The Shi school says: The North Star is bright and large, and if it frequently moves, it indicates the ruler will often go out on tours. If the star appears bluish or is faint and about to disappear, it is an ominous sign. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the North Star separates from the Big Dipper, and is three feet above the ground, with only the main star remaining while the others lose their positions and depart, it indicates great chaos in the world, the change of dynasties, and people eating each other. Another divination says: If the central star of the North Star is dim or has moved away from its position, it indicates the ruler does not personally attend to state affairs. If the star on the left is dim, the crown prince will have worries. If the star on the right is dim, the younger son will have worries. The "Jingzhou Divination" also says: The part of Tian Shu that points to the heart mansion is large, and the part that points to the three stars mansion is small. Therefore, those who lead armies should follow the direction of Tian Shu when marching, so that on the left there is the Azure Dragon, on the right the White Tiger, in front the Vermilion Bird, and behind the Black Tortoise. The Azure Dragon, White Tiger, and Vermilion Bird each correspond to the seven constellations, while the Black Tortoise corresponds mainly to the constellations Xu and Wei.
The "Spring and Autumn Writings" say: The vital energy of heaven condenses into Gou Chen, and the energy of Gou Chen controls the earth's virtue, establishing laws and numerical order for all things; the original text below is missing, leaving only the character "Chen." The "Music and Figures Diagram" says: Gou Chen symbolizes the harem. The "Spring and Autumn Concordance Diagram" says: Gou Chen is the chief consort of the heavenly emperor and also the place where the heavenly emperor resides regularly. Wu Xian says: Gou Chen is the General of Protection for the Son of Heaven, belonging to the Water Palace in the Five Phases. Xi Meng says: Gou Chen is the harem. Sima Qian's "Book of Heavenly Officials" says: Four stars curve in the region behind the Northern Pole Star, and the largest among them is the chief consort, while the other three belong to the concubines of the harem. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: Gou Chen is the Grand Master of the Son of Heaven. Another divination says: Gou Chen is the position where the Yellow Dragon resides. This star official is described differently by various schools, some considering it as the harem and concubines, others as palace guards and generals. In the end, all these descriptions point to the image of surrounding and protecting the heavenly emperor.
The *Jingzhou Divination* says: The four stars of Gou Chen form a ring around the four directions, which corresponds to the queen consorts of the deity Taiyi. The *Yellow Emperor's Divination* says: When the four stars of Gou Chen surround the four directions and the stars are bright and strong, the ruler will have good fortune and prosperity; if they are not bright and strong, the ruler will suffer losses. The *Shi School* says: The stars of Gou Chen should be bright and beautiful, which indicates that the close ministers of the Son of Heaven are strong; if they are small and dark, the close ministers are weak. Xi Meng says: When the stars of Gou Chen are bright and strong, the ministers assisting the Son of Heaven are strong; if they are small and dim, the ministers are weak. Another divination says: When the stars of Gou Chen move away from their position and disappear, it is very unfavorable for a female ruler. The *Jingzhou Divination* also says: When the ruler does not accept advice, and flatterers occupy high positions, the stars of Gou Chen will not shine brightly. The *Shi School's Divination* says: The five stars of the Northern Pole are the most esteemed, and the main star of Gou Chen corresponds to the position of the ministers assisting the ruler. Since Gou Chen both represents the chief queen in the harem and the close guards, the above divinations mostly discuss the strength of the ruler's ministers.
The star Tianyi (Heavenly One) indicates sixty-one.
The Shi school says: The Tianyi star is located to the south of the western star outside the Purple Palace gate, and is on the same degree as the right star of the Purple Palace gate. Tianyi is a revered deity belonging to the heavenly emperor, facing opposite to the southern Taiyi. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates: the southern star is at ten degrees of the Chariot mansion, ten and a half degrees from the northern celestial pole, and seventy-four and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. Han Yang says: Tianyi is also called the "Master of the Big Dipper." When this star is bright, the king's governance is on track; when it is dim, it indicates the king's way is reversed, and the Master of the Big Dipper loses his sight, with the seven stars of the Big Dipper also responding by changing color. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: Tianyi belongs to the earthly path; it should be small in size but bright, indicating harmony between yin and yang and the maturity of all things. If Tianyi is large and bright, it indicates imbalance between water and drought, failure of the five grains, great famine across the land, and people abandoning their homes. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" also says: When Tianyi is clear and luminous, the Son of Heaven is auspicious. The Shi school says: Tianyi should be bright and luminous, indicating harmony between yin and yang and the maturity of all things. Another divination says: When Tianyi disappears, the world will be in turmoil, and the nobleman will leave his position. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: When the light of Tianyi is strong, the ruler will have good fortune and prosperity. The "Shi School's Commentary" says: Tianyi and Taiyi are both deities attending the heavenly emperor, in charge of carrying out the heavenly deities' affairs.
The Star of Taiyi governs sixty-two.
The Shi school says: Taiyi has only one star, located to the south of Tianyi star, with the two stars close to each other. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates: entering the Chariot mansion at ten degrees, at a distance of ten degrees from the northern celestial pole, and seventy-four and a half degrees within the Yellow Path. The "Zu Geng Divination" says: Taiyi has a red color, and it is the spirit of the heavenly emperor; it commands and controls sixteen spirits, knowing about winds and rains, droughts and floods, wars, famines, epidemics, and which country will suffer disasters. The Shi school says: when Tianyi star is bright, it is auspicious; when it is dim, it is inauspicious. The "Chunqiu Hecheng Tu" says: when Taiyi star leaves its position and rises above the Big Dipper, there will certainly be military actions within ninety days. The "Jingzhou Divination" says: when Taiyi star loses its position, it indicates that the emperor is traveling outside and has not yet returned. Another divination says: the place where Taiyi resides, the left side belongs to literature, the right side belongs to military affairs, the back is the Northern Pole Star, the front is the path of travel, and the four heavenly emperors are arranged on both sides, with many spirits serving as assistants; if both literature and military affairs are unclear, the strength of the assistants will also be weak.
The Kaiyuan Treatise on Astrology, Volume Sixty-Eight
The Shi school's outer officials
Kulu occupies one position.
The Shi school says: The Kulu star cluster consists of ten stars, the five columns consist of fifteen stars, and the balance consists of four stars, totaling twenty-nine stars, located to the south of the Left Angle star. The original book's marginal note records its coordinates and composition: the star in the northwest enters the Chariot Mansion slightly, is one hundred forty degrees away from the north celestial pole, and is three degrees and three quarters outside the Yellow Path. Kulu is also called "Tianku," which is the storehouse for war chariots. Among them, the six larger stars are the storehouse, the four stars to the west are the pavilion, and the fifteen stars beside them, grouped into sets of three, are the columns, while the central small star is the balance. Wu Xian says: Tianku belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. The "Chunqiu Yuanming Bao" says: Tianku is in charge of displaying military equipment. The "Huangdi Zhan" says: The Kulu stars outside the Five Vehicles, if their bright and largepointed rays and numerous stars appear, it indicates a great increase in military forces and a large mobilization of chariots and cavalry. The direction indicated by Kulu is where military affairs occur and the direction troops move towards; people can thus predict this. The function of Kulu is to remind people not to forget military preparedness.
The Luo Writing says: The constellation of the granary shows signs of military movement, calamity will spread to the Hu people; another interpretation says the military horses in the Hu region will be startled. The Luo Writing also says: If there are no stars in the granary, it indicates rebellion by the ministers of the southern land, and military plots will arise. The Spring Annals Wei says: If the heavenly granary is empty, the feudal lords will plot rebellion; another interpretation says there will be military plots in the central region surrounded on all sides. The Spring Annals Kao Yi You says: When the king plans to campaign against the four barbarian tribes, the star of military power in the granary will show signs of movement. Another divination says: If the five pillars of the granary tremble together, five generals will all go on campaign; if the five pillars sproutpointed rays or light spikes, there will be many generals and commanders, and the number of chariots and horses will be too great to accommodate. The Shi school says: If the granary and the five pillars all disappear, all military chariots will be deployed, and the Son of Heaven will personally lead the troops. Jiao Yanshou says: If the star of the heavenly granary approaches the pillar star at its upper end, it indicates a change of the king's palace, perhaps a collapse or a fire from heaven. Xi Meng says: The heavenly granary governs military affairs in the distant lands; if the star trembles, the general will go on a campaign; if all the stars tremble, all generals will go on campaign. Xi Meng also says: The heavenly granary has many stars, so it is easy to store and distribute weapons; if all the stars depart, it indicates the rise of military affairs. The Shi school praise says: The granary constellation is the place where weapons are stored, and it should be full, most importantly avoiding emptiness.
The star South Gate is associated with the second position in divination.
The Shi school says: The two stars of Nanmen are located south of Kulu. The original book's marginal note records their coordinates: the western star is in the 14th degree of Chenzhen mansion, 130 degrees from the northern celestial pole, and 21 degrees and three fourths outside the Yellow Path. The "Chunqiu Wei" says: the two bright stars south of Juxu are called Nanmen. The original book's marginal note says: Nanmen is the outer gate of heaven. The "Huangdi Zhan" says: when the stars of Nanmen are bright, it is auspicious for the officials of law and order, and the sovereign will flourish; if these auspicious stars are dim and abnormal, it indicates that ministers are disloyal, or military actions will arise, and the sovereign will have worries. The Shi school says: if a small star with three rays appears in the middle of Nanmen, it indicates the mobilization of military vehicles. The "Shi Zhi Zan" says: the two stars of Nanmen govern the defense and military preparedness.
The Three Stars of Peace are used in divination.
The Shi school says: The two stars of Ping are located to the north of Kulu. The original commentary notes their coordinates: the western star is in the fourteenth degree of Chariot mansion, one hundred degrees from the northern celestial pole, and three quarters of a degree outside the Yellow Path. The "Spring and Autumn Concordance Diagram" says: The star Ping governs the official in charge of judicial fairness, the court's chief judge. The "Treatise on Omen" says: The star Ping governs law. The "Yellow Emperor's Divination" says: When the star Ping is bright and upright, with two stars of equal size and brightness, it indicates harmony between sovereign and ministers and the smooth implementation of government orders; if the star is dim, uneven, and not upright, it indicates discord between sovereign and ministers and the disorder of laws and regulations. The Shi school says: The two stars of Ping should be equal in size, with a constant distance between them, and not deviate in height, which would lead to great peace in the world and the maturity of all things. The "Shi School Commentary" says: The star Ping governs laws and regulations and maintains order, and when this star is uneven and discordant, government affairs become chaotic. Xi Meng says: The star Ping governs litigation across the land, like the celestial counterpart of the current position of the chief judicial officer.
The star of the official is associated with four.
The Shi school says: The Qiguan constellation consists of twenty-seven stars, located to the south of the star enclosure. The original commentary notes its coordinates: the star to the west and north is located at the fourth and three-quarters degree of the Kangle mansion, at a distance of one hundred and fifteen and a half degrees from the northern celestial pole, and nineteen and a half degrees outside the Yellow Path. The Shi school also says: Qiguan is also called "Qingneng"; when the number of stars in this constellation is numerous, the world will be peaceful; if the number of stars is few, the cavalry will rebel. The original commentary says: Qiguan is the current "Hubei warriors." The Shi school further says: a group of stars to the south of the Fangsu mansion is called Qiguan General; Qiguan is responsible for guarding the palace; some people say that Qiguan belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: the duty of Qiguan is to guard the heavenly emperor's palace, to prevent unexpected changes; if these stars are numerous and bright, the royal harem will be auspicious and the world will be peaceful; if the starlight is weak and sparse, or if the star'spointed rays is obscured, it indicates concern for the guards, great military movements, and the deployment of cavalry. The Jingzhou Divination says: when the number of stars in Qiguan is numerous, it indicates the movement of cavalry; another view says that if these stars suddenly move away from their positions, the Qiguan will be stationed to the east to guard the king.
The accumulation of soldiers' stars indicate five.
The Shi school says: The accumulation of soldiers consists of twelve stars, located south of the Room mansion and the Heart mansion. The original commentary notes its coordinates: the western star is in the Root mansion at thirteen degrees and three quarters, one hundred and twenty-four degrees and one quarter from the northern celestial pole, and twenty-one degrees and one quarter outside the Yellow Path. The Shi school also says: The accumulation of soldiers is also called "guardians," and its bright edge changes, indicating the gathering of troops; some say the accumulation of soldiers is the military official, belonging to the metal element in the Five Phases. The Shi school says: The Tian Gong (Heavenly Bow) consists of nine stars, located to the west of the San Xiu (Three Stars mansion), also known as the Tian Gong. The original commentary notes its coordinates: the southernmost star is located nine and a half degrees into the Bi Xiu (Net mansion), ninety-three degrees from the north celestial pole, and thirteen and a half degrees outside the Yellow Path. Xi Meng says: The Tian Gong has nine stars, but the number is incomplete, indicating a great amnesty throughout the land. This amnesty is due to military affairs, not occurring without cause. This star is also called San Qi (Three Flags) and is also known as Tian Fu (Treasury and Command). The Spring Annals Commentary says: The Tian Gong is located to the west of the San Xiu, consisting of nine stars arranged in a curved formation, divided into three parts: the first is Tian Qi (Heavenly Flag), the second is Tian Yuan (Heavenly苑), and the third is Ji You (Nine Wanderers). These are used to proclaim authority and clarify the beginning of new endeavors. Wu Xian says: The Tian Gong belongs to the metal element in the Five Phases. The Spring Annals Commentary also says: Tian Qi oversees the anomalies of the five planets. When the sun or moon passes through it, or when the planet Mars halts within it, or when an eclipse star appears, it indicates turmoil in the world. Xi Meng says: The Tian Gong oversees matters of weapons and bows and arrows. When this star moves, someone will deceive the sovereign.
The Yellow Emperor's Divination says: The star cluster known as Cen Qi should not be bright; it is small and arranged in a straight line, indicating the monarch's health and the world free from warfare. If it is bright and its shape is curved, like a drawn bow, it indicates the world will be in turmoil, warfare will break out extensively, and the people will suffer. The Li Han Wen Jia says: When the monarch's regulations are clear and orderly, and all things correspond appropriately, the Cen Qi stars will be arranged in a curved bow shape. The original commentary cites Song Jun, who says: The term 'bow shape' refers to the arrangement of the Cen Qi stars being winding and curved, resembling a bow. The Yi Wei says: When the flag stars are bright and prominent, it indicates the monarch will suffer loss, and the feudal lords will rebel. The Li Wei says: From the Son of Heaven down to the officials, banners and flags will be in accordance with proper rites, regulations will be clear and orderly, and the Cen Qi stars will be arranged in a curved bow shape, being straight, neat, balanced, and harmonious. The Shi school says: When the Cen Qi stars are not bright, it is auspicious; when they are bright, it indicates a gathering of mourning events; another view suggests it indicates disturbances on the borders, bandits causing chaos, warfare arising, and the launching of bows and arrows with soldiers mobilized. It also says: If the color is yellow and moist, it indicates a good harvest. The Jade Calendar says: The厕 star is favorable when its light is warm, moist, bright, and clear; in such cases, the king will not suffer from illness. If the star appears or disappears out of season, or if its light is faint or disappears, it indicates the king will suffer from intestinal diseases, or the people will suffer from an epidemic. The Shi school's praise says: The厕 star is attached to the carriage star, and its name naturally becomes prominent.

The Yellow Emperor's Divination also says: When the heavenly arrow star is faint, all things scatter; if the number of stars is incomplete, there will be many diseases; if this star disappears, the people will suffer greatly from illness and weakness. Another divination says: Usually, during the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, observe the heavenly arrow star; if it is bright and yellow and moist, the people will not suffer from disease, and the king will be secure; if the star is not bright and appears green or black, the people will suffer from diseases of the waist and intestines, the country will suffer from famine, and many people will die of starvation.
